Bulgaria Birding Tours

Birding Ecotours offers Bulgaria birding tours in both winter, when we encounter large numbers of waterfowl, and in spring, when we find exciting bird migrants and other residents specials. The Republic of Bulgaria (“Bulgaria” hereafter) is one of Europe’s premier bird watching destinations. Located in southeastern Europe on the Balkan Peninsula, the country is made up of breathtaking geography, fascinating history, and sensational avifauna. Bulgaria is Europe’s sixteenth largest country at 42,855 square miles (110,993 square kilometers) which makes it around the size of Ohio , in the  United States of America . Bulgaria’s population is falling due to migration and at 6.95 million people it is considered a relatively small population. The capital, Sofia, is a vibrant city and has become popular for its history, architecture (especially Orthodox churches), and nightlife. Sofia crams over 1.6 million people into its metropolitan area, around 23% of the country’s population.

Bulgaria is one of the longest inhabited countries in Europe with the earliest societies forming around 6,500 BC. Since then Bulgaria has been a battle ground for many rival factions to fight over. Thracians, Persians, Celts, Macedonians, Romans, Bulgars, Ottomans, and the Soviet Empire have all held Bulgaria. Some of the bloodiest fighting of the 20th century conflicts took place in the country. In 1989 Bulgaria broke away from communist Soviet rule, before transitioning into a democracy in 1991. Since then Bulgaria has joined the European Union but a shrinking population is beginning to cause issues for the economy of the country.

For a relatively small country, Bulgaria has a wide range of habitats and many neighbors. Starting to the north of the country and working clockwise Bulgaria shares borders with  Romania ,  Turkey ,  Greece , North Macedonia, and Serbia. Its entire east coast borders the Black Sea and this area is one of the key migratory flyways in Europe, with hundreds of thousands of birds moving south along the coast before crossing the Bosporus Strait of northern  Turkey . Bulgaria’s geography ranges from impressive mountain ranges to coastal plains and almost every habitat in between. Our Bulgaria birding tours will take in this range of habitats to see the widest range of species possible. Bulgaria’s climate is varied due to its positioning and topography, its mountain ranges have a great effect on temperature and precipitation, with the north of the country being cooler and wetter than the south. Despite its southerly position in Europe, high amounts of snowfall are common in winter, due to continental airmasses from the north.

Following  International Ornithological Congress (IOC)  taxonomy, Bulgaria has a bird list of  429 species (IOC v10.2 in September 2020), 23 of these species being globally threatened. Birding Bulgaria

Over the last fifteen years birding has really taken off in Bulgaria, but this is not really surprising when one considers the species that can be seen in this birding paradise. There are over 200 Dalmatian pelicans in the colony at the Srebarna UNESCO reserve, which is the biggest European colony, Red-footed Falcons (over 500 pairs); over 20 pairs of Eastern Imperial eagles, over 800 pairs of Pygmy cormorant, over 100 pairs of Ferruginous duck, and more than 50 pairs of Ruddy shell duck. The country is dotted with fishpond systems and many small and bigger rivers, where Savis Warbler, and Penduline Tit are common, and herons and egrets easily seen.

The chain of the Central Balkan National Park, Pirin and Vitosha mountains National Parks, Rila mountain with many mountain reserves, Rhodope mountain and in the far South east Strandza mountain National Park and the local reserves, with their perfect woods and huge cliffs give great opportunities for raptors. These include Eastern Imperial, Golden, Booted, Short-toed, and Lesser spotted eagles, and Saker. The lower parts of the mountains and the whole of the rest of the country is good for Long legged buzzard, Levant Sparrow hawk, Red footed falcon, Montegue’s harrier, Honey Buzzard, Egyptian, Black and Griffon vultures, White-tailed eagle, and Black and White stork. Bulgaria is also the best place in the World for seeing Wallcreeper, the biggest European populations of Sombre Tit, Masked and Lesser Grey Shrikes, Short-toed Treecreeper, Olive-tree and Paddyfield Warblers, Spanish Sparrow, Semi-collared flycatcher, Black-headed & Rock Buntings, Black-headed Yellow Wagtail, Golden Oriole, Roller, Bee-eater, Hoopoe, Rose-coloured Starling, Rock Partridge, Pied, Isabelline and Eastern Black-eared Wheatears, Corncrake, Syrian Woodpecker, Calandra and Short-toed Larks.

Many rare European species, like Pallid swift, Little and spotted crakes, Stone-curlew, Collared and Black-winged pratincoles, Gull-billed and Caspian terns, White pelicans, Eagle owl, Ural owl, Scops owl, Pygmy and Tegmalm’s owls, Shore lark, Rock and Blue rock thrush, Sub-alpine, Barred, Sardinian and Orphean warblers, Nutcracker, Rock sparrow, and Dotterel are relatively easy to find. In almost every wood and the open area there are Black, Green, Grey-headed, Middle-spotted, Great-spotted, and Lesser-spotted woodpeckers. High in the mountain are three-toed woodpecker. There is a good chance of the rare White-backed woodpecker, as well as Syrian woodpecker and Wryneck in the open areas.

The best time to visit is spring, with, on average, 220-230 species, including many rarities but birding in autumn is also good, especially for large raptor migration, Pelicans, and shorebirds. There are huge number of birds every autumn with Honey Buzzards (6000+); Levant sparrow hawk (100+); Common buzzards (20,000+); Booted eagle (100); Lesser spotted eagles (10,000+); Short-toed eagles (400+); Pallid harriers (15); Hobbys (70+); Red footed falcons (1000+); White storks (over 130,000); Black stork (3000+); White pelicans (20,000+); Dalmatian pelicans, and many other rare and interesting birds such as thousands of wagtails, swallows, pipits, and larks etc.

Bulgaria is one of the best European countries for birding in winter, as it holds thousands of Red-breasted and White fronted geese, a very good chance of lesser white-fronted geese and rare European ducks. In the last few years there have been very good numbers of White headed duck (over 300); Smew, Dalmatian pelican, Great white Egret, Whooper and Bewick’s swans, Rough-legged and Long legged buzzards.

Bulgarian landscape is very variable. The plains and marshes of the Danube and Maritsa rivers and Black sea coast give a great possibility of getting all the European herons, as well as Spoonbills and Glossy Ibis, Little Bittern breed. Even the forest in the centre of Sofia – the Bulgarian capital, gives perfect opportunities for birding, and Vitosha mountain national park is just a few minutes by car from Sofia. The dozens of reserves in the country and also many unprotected areas with their variety of landscape, birds, plants insects etc, in a small country such as Bulgaria, mark it out as a leading European country for birding.

The climate is typically continental in Northern Bulgaria and Dobrudza region, which means warm summers and cold winters. Along the black sea coast the winter is not so severe and the summer is not so hot. In the high mountains the climate is typical with long and cold winter and shorter spring and summer. Along the southern border with Turkey and Greece the Mediterranean influence is tactile. One of the most important sources of foreign income in Bulgaria is tourism and so most of the country is geared up to receiving and looking after visitors and that includes birders. Food, and drinks are cheap and accommodation is very reasonable. Yet, many regions of Bulgaria are still rather under developed with farmland that still hosts good numbers of birds.

BIRDWATCHING TOURS in Bulgaria

A 4-day tour along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, focusing on the observation of some of the most targeted species of birds in Southeastern Europe …

If you wish to join one of our scheduled Woodpeckers, Owls and Grouse Trips, please check the availability. Download the check-list of birds likely to be seen on this tour.

On this tour you have excellent chances to see all the 22 breeding raptors in Bulgaria plus several passing, non-breeding and vagrant species!

We run this 4-day tour either in the Balkan or the Pirin Mountains – two of the highest mountains on the Balkans. We choose the location depending on the chances to see the Rock Partridge there in the respective year. To increase our chances of seeing this impressive, but rather shy bird we start early in the morning, before dawn.

A tour exploring the spectacular spring migration along the Black Sea coast with thousands of pelicans, rare birds of prey and passerines and many other eastern delights! This tour allows you to enjoy the song and displays of resident and early arriving breeders.

A short break in Bulgaria’s magnificent Trigrad Gorge – probably the most reliable place in Europe to find and enjoy this exciting bird.

A tour focusing on the spectacular annual migration of thousands of birds of prey, pelicans, storks and passerines along the Black Sea Flyway, known as the Via Pontica.

An utterly rewarding trip, designed for birders keen enough to neglect the cold!

A fortnight spring birding tour, exploring some of the most beautiful, bird-rich landscapes in Europe – the Black Sea coast, the Rhodopes, the Central Balkan and the Vitosha Mountains.

Every year hundreds of thousands of wild geese, among which almost the whole population of the globally threatened Red-breasted Goose, choose the north-eastern corner of Bulgaria to spend the winter.

Birdwatching & Wildlife Tours

bird watching tours bulgaria

Bulgaria is a paradise for birdwatchers. Lying on the Balkan Peninsula, one of the most strategically important points for bird observation in Europe, Bulgaria has taken a lot from everything: waterfowl, waders, mountain and meadow bird species typical for Central and Northern Europe, passerines and raptors characteristic of the Mediterranean, steppe and even semi-desert species influenced by the proximity of The Northern Pontic regions and Asia Minor. The variety of habitats that could be found in the country is amazing. When we add the outstanding location at the end of the natural bottle-neck, formed by the second biggest migratory route in Europe (Via Pontica) we end up with a complete complex of conditions for a superb birdwatching almost all the year round, including a checklist of more than 420 species discovered by now.

Birdwatching Bulgaria

birdwatching bulgaria burgas bird

Bulgaria is a paradise for birdwatchers. Birdwatching Bulgaria is one of the best Bulgaria destinations for spring, summer, autumn and winter private Bulgaria holidays . Specialists recorded more than 400 bird species in Bulgaria.

Bulgaria is a small ex-communist country where not long ago secrecy was everywhere. Even Bulgarians didn’t know their own border regions. Bulgarian people needed special tickets to travel to these places. Nowadays, Bulgaria tourism and birdwatching Bulgaria is becoming more popular. This is due to the Bulgarian government and the fact that communism collapsed. Another positive thing is that Bulgaria is part of the European Union. As a result, people can travel to Bulgaria and enjoy their Bulgaria holidays freely. It is such a small country but so beautiful and rich in landscapes, mountains, gorges. Bulgaria is also proud with its hills, forests, lakes, gentle sandy beaches of Bulgarian coast… You can still see shepherds watching the herds of sheep and cows. Birdwatching Bulgaria is paradise for those who love being in the nature and enjoy the company of birds.

Via Pontica and Via Aristotelis – things to do in Bulgaria for bird-lovers

Two of the five European routes of the bird migration are in Bulgaria. They are Via Pontica and Via Aristotelis. These two go through the small territory of the country. That makes birdwatching Bulgaria a desired and attractive destination for all the devoted birdwatchers; and also for those who ‘unprofessionally’ love birds. The north coastline of Bulgaria is a true paradise for ornithologists and bird lovers, who come from around the world to watch the birds.

Birds use Via Pontica road from the middle part of Eastern Europe to Africa. While birds flying from Middle Europe and also the central part of the Balkans to Africa use Via Aristotelis again. Many people have heard about Via Pontica only as a major migration route. However, a few know the fact that that was actually the name of the ancient Roman road. The road between Constantinople (today’s Istanbul, Istanbul city tour ) and Istros (today’s Histria – in Romania). The route is rich in ruins, medieval fortresses, remains of ancient towns etc… Birdwatching Bulgaria in any season together with ‘history watching’ and ‘history learning’ as well, are a good combination and a great experience. Contact us for birdwatching Bulgaria.

I am not a professional birdwatcher but I love it anytime I can experience it. One of the places I like is Pomorie Lake.

I did a birdwatching tour in Roumania an year ago. It was good.

🙂 I am a bird lover but also like history and I loved the idea of combining birdwatching with history watching and history learning…

Bulgaria in spring – the best birding of the Balkans (9 days)

birdwatching in bulgaria

Not been in this part of Europe yet? Join us and you will be able to add a whole lot of impressive species to your list. This is not a typical birdwatching holiday, meant for large groups of 15+ birders. We have made this tour for small parties and even couples and individuals, who are flexible enough as this is crucial for this itinerary that is normally covered within 10-12 days. Not much time is spent at any of the hotspots in order to visit as much as possible places, each of them offering something new to add to the checklist. This maybe a little tiresome at moments, but in general this program is so well balanced, that it gives the best in terms of variety of birds and habitats for the limited time of its duration. The route goes through the deep gorges, pristine valleys and meadows of Rodopi Mountains, the rolling hills of Sakar Mountains, the Black Sea coast with its wetlands and steppes, the Danube River and the plains spread among all of them. The highlights include: Dalmatian Pelican, Pygmy Cormorant, Black Stork, Ferruginous Duck, Egyptian and Griffon Vultures, Levant Sparrowhawk, Long-legged Buzzard, Eastern Imperial Eagle, Lesser Spotted Eagle, Red-footed Falcon, Mediterranean Gull, Whiskered Tern, Pallid Swift, Roller, Calandra Lark, Red-rumped Swallow, Masked Shrike, Woodchat and Lesser Grey Shrikes, Isabelline and Pied Wheatears, Blue Rock Thrush, Paddyfield Warbler, Olive-tree Warbler, Barred Warbler, Bonelli’s Warbler, Semi-collared Flycatcher, Red-breasted Flycatcher, Sombre Tit, Rock Nuthatch, Black-headed Bunting, Rose-coloured Starling etc.

Day 1. Welcome meeting at Sofia Airport. Transfer to the hotel. Time permitting you will have some free time in the afternoon for a short stroll in the city center. Overnight in Sofia. Day 2 . Today we will visit the biggest natural wetland by Sofia – Dragoman Marsh, and the Karst hills surrounding it. The marsh is just 40km westwards from Sofia, situated along the Via Aristotelis migratory route, which is a premise for a good number of migrants and waterfowl in spring. After lunch we will be on our way in the Thracian Plain to another place, famous for its still preserved steppe habitats – Besaparski Hills. From there we enter the heart of Rodopi Mountains, where we stay overnight by Trigrad Gorge – world famous place for watching Wallcreepers. Highlights of the day: Bittern, Little Bittern, Purple Heron, Great Egret, Ferruginous Duck, Long-legged Buzzard, Red-footed Falcon, Calandra Lark, Short-toed Lark, Bee-eater, Black-headed Bunting, Isabelline Wheatear, Tawny Pipit etc. Day 3. A morning, dedicated to Wallcreepers. It may take a while until we see it on the 250m high cliffs of Trigrad Gorge, which no doubt will also be a hard exercise for the neck. After the gorge we head northwards back to the Thracian Plain, where we will make a short stop at Maritsa River before continuing further down to the eastern parts of Rodopi Mountains. This part of Bulgaria is known as the realm of the birds of prey (and not only!) and here we will spend 2 nights. Highlights of the day: Wallcreeper, Levant Sparrowhawk, Black Kite, Pallid Swift, Masked Shrike, Lesser Grey Shrike, Roller, Hoopoe, Olivaceous Warbler, Red-rumped Swallow, Crossbill, Spanish Sparrow etc. Day 4. An active birding day in the valley of Arda River and the volcanic cliffs around the huge lakes along it. We are going to visit a number of places, perfect for raptors and passerines. Highlights of the day: Black Stork, Short-toed Eagle, Booted Eagle, Egyptian and Griffon vultures, Honey Buzzard, Blue Rock Thrush, Olive-tree Warbler, Barred Warbler, Orphean and Sardinian Warblers, Subalpine Warbler, Crag Martin, Rock Nuthatch, Sombre Tit, Woodchat Shrike, Bonelli’s warbler, Ortolan Bunting etc. Day 5. After a good-bye morning stroll below the cliffs of Madzharovo we continue to Sakar Mountains – the place with the biggest concentration of breeding Imperial Eagles in Bulgaria. We will try on several spots to locate them as we move eastwards to the Southern Black Sea coast and the town of Bourgas, where we stay for the night. Highlight of the day: Eastern Imperial Eagle, Lesser Spotted Eagle, Short-toed Eagle, Booted Eagle, Long-legged Buzzard, Isabelline Wheatear, Black-headed Bunting, Masked Shrike, Olive-tree Warbler, Woodchat Shrike, Red-backed Shrike, Cirl Bunting, Rock Bunting etc. Day 6. The wetlands around Bourgas would not really surprise a European birder in terms of species composition but still we will spend some time to explore the lakes and lagoons in the area. Then we head northwards, making a short stop in a nice oak forest – a superb place for woodpeckers and Semi-collared Flycatchers. Eventually we arrive at Cape Kaliakra – probably the best place in Bulgaria for seawatching. We spend the night in the area, famous also for its maritime steppes with specific avifauna during migration. Highlights of the day: Dalmatian and White Pelican, Pygmy Cormorant, Mediterranean Shearwater, Whiskered and Little Tern, Avocet, Kentish Plover, Curlew Sandpiper, Squacco Heron, Greenshank, Spotted Redshank, Marsh Sandpiper, Mediterranean Gull, Shag (Mediterranean race desmarestii), Middle Spotted Woodpecker, Grey Woodpecker, Syrian Woodpecker, Pied Wheatear, Bee-eater, Calandra Lark etc. Day 7 . In the morning we visit a small lagoon by the sea and also Durankoulak Lake – world-famous place in winter, when thousands of Red-breasted Geese concentrate here. We will make a circle around the lake and continue through the fields of Dobrogea northwest to the Danube River and probably the most famous Bulgarian wetland – Srebarna Lake, where we will spend the night. Highlights of the day: Dalmatian Pelican, Pygmy Cormorant, Squacco and Purple Heron, Great Egret, Little Bittern, Spoonbill, Red-necked Grebe, Ferruginous Duck, Whiskered Tern, Black-winged Stilt, Bee-eater, White-tailed Eagle, Levant Sparrohawk, Red-footed Falcon, Red-breasted Flycatcher, Golden Oriole, Rose-coloured Starling etc. Day 8. More birding around the lake and long transfer back to Sofia (appr. 6 hrs). En-route (time permitting) we may stop for a short sightseeing in Veliko Tyrnovo – the capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. Overnight in Sofia or late evening flight back home (please advice what suits you best). Day 9. Transfer to the airport for departure.

Accommodation: 3-star hotels (in Sofia and Bourgas) and guesthouse (rest places) with en-suite double rooms on bed & breakfast basis (ordering lunchpacks is possible for each of the days at the price of 4-5 Euro/person; good restaurant will be suggested for lunch otherwise where possible).

Winter Birdwatching Tour in Bulgaria

The wetlands in Eastern Bulgaria trace the coastal regions of the country... These are the best places for birdwatching in winter...

Itinerary Day 1: Welcome meeting at Varna Airport. Transfer to the Northern Black Sea coast and overnight in the area (depending on the snow conditions and the recent location of the biggest concentrations of birds).

Day 2: Early in the morning we will witness for the first time the massive flocks of gees, taking off at dawn, spreading over the fields westwards. As the light will still not be good enough for a thorough check of the flocks we will have to explore during the day the fields inland, where the geese use to graze at daytime. This is the time when checking the smaller flocks we can encounter also rarities like Bewick’s Swan, Lesser White-fronted Goose, Barnacle Goose, Bean Goose etc. In the afternoon we will be checking the wetlands for other waterfowl and seabirds, waiting for the sunset, when the gees will start coming back. Highlights of the day: Red-breasted goose, White-fronted Goose, Lesser White-fronted Goose, Great Egret, Bittern, Black-throated Diver, Black-necked Grebe, Bewick’s Swan, Red-crested Pochard, Rough-legged Buzzard, Merlin, White-tailed Eagle, Yellow-legged and Pallas’s Gulls, Smew, Sanderling, Knot etc.

Day 3: The day will start with exactly the same program. Later in the afternoon we transfer southwards to the town of Bourgas to check the rest wetlands there, that are not good particularly for gees but for other waterfowl. We spend the night in Bourgas.

Days 4 & 5: Birding at the wetlands around Bourgas. The never freezing shallow salt pans are traditional hotspots for watching waders and ducks in winter. We will also make circle around the biggest lake in the area, exploring its coves for more interesting birds. Highlights of the days: Dalmatian Pelican, Pygmy Cormorant, Great Egret, Red-breasted goose, White-fronted Goose, Lesser White-fronted Goose, Black-throated Diver, Black-necked Grebe, Slavonian Grebe, Red-breasted Merganser, Bewick’s Swan, Red-crested Pochard, Scaup, White-headed Duck, Smew, Velvet Scoter, White-tailed Eagle, Yellow-legged and Pallas’s Gulls, Sanderling, Knot etc.

Day 6: Transfer to Varna airport for departure.

Group size: Min. 2

Price: € 640 per person for 2 persons; € 520 per person for 4 or more

It was exactly the sort of special interest tour I had hoped to find and I certainly learned a great deal during the week. It was fascinating to discover so much about the Thracians and to see the tombs and archaeological sites first hand. Sofia is most impressive as a modern city especially with the Vitosha mountain as a backdrop. Also it was good to learn of Bulgarian history during the Mediaeval period and of how Bulgaria was eventually liberated from the Ottomans and to see the later Revivalist architecture and artwork. It was a privilege to have the opportunity to travel with such nice people in a small group and our guide was very knowledgeable and helpful. All round it was a memorable week and I would recommend Balkania Travel to my friends. Thank you for all your help and assistance with the arrangements. S. B.

Spring Natural History Tour

Our air-conditioned coach with a window seat for everyone (42 seats for 19 people) was sheer luxury. The guided tours by our interpreter of some old town centres and historic sites, and photo stops at picturesque villages all added to the cultural experience in addition to the nature. Within a day or two the group had gelled and a party atmosphere made the whole experience so much more enjoyable. To be with people of similar interests and outlook was a joy. Nearly 80 species of butterfly and 216 species of bird were identified in addition to many flowers, beetles and some mammals.
