The Complete Guide to George Everest Peak Trek
George Everest Peak takes you to the house of Sir George Everest. Sir George Everest was a Surveyor-General of India from 1830 to 1843 and led a significant part of India’s Great Trigonometrical Survey. He was the one who hired Andrew Waugh and Radhanath Sikdar who made the first-ever observation of Mount Everest and calculated its height.
Situated at a height of 6578 feet above sea level, the House of Sir George Everest is legacy in ruins. The iconic house offers a mesmerizing view of the Doon valley on one side and the Aglar river and Majestic Himalayan peaks on the other.
For a very long time, its importance was underestimated. However, in 2020 the significance of the place was well recognized by the Uttarakhand government, who then decided to renovate the heritage bungalow of Sir George and announced to convert it into a cartography museum. The museum thus will showcase the surveying instruments of Sir George, which will include theodolites and baseline bars.

You’ll see a lot of litter all around and broken glass bottles have made the place a real pain in the heart of nature lovers. This is a sad sight to see. Carry your tiffin box, a mug and a water bottle and avoid using disposables anywhere on the trek. This makes sure you’re not adding to the litter that already exists. George Everest Peak #Mussoorie How to hike in extreme conditions😎
Sure, climbing Mount Everest would be cool, but that's something I would now like to do..
George Everest is hands-down my best trek so far. And why, well you'll get to know down the blog.
So, this is in continuation to my first blog on Mussoorie where I covered the splendid Lal Tibba and the Gothic Kellogg Memorial Church.
Lovely Omlette Centre
So, Day 2 started with the famous 'Lovely omelette' 😋 and a tea ☕️ on the streets of Landour. Will be covering all the places to have a great and memorable meal in Mussoorie on another blog.
GypsyTip: If you are going solo and want cheap stays, look for Airbnb and hotels in Landour.
George Everest's House
Visit the 18th century house of George Everest, the Surveyor General of India from 1830 to 1843. Located atop the namesake George Everest peak, the house is accessible via a mountain trail located near Mussoorie.
Also Read: snowfall in mussoorie
At the house, you'll be fascinated with the colonial era architecture that makes the hill-top structure so interesting. The house is located near the Benog Hill, allowing you to trek further and explore the Benog Wildlife Sanctuary. But, not much of it is left for us to see. I would suggest go for the trek as it might take upto 3 hours to finish one way.
Went to the George Everest Base and if you need some snacks or want to refill your bottles, this is the place for it because you won't find anything along the way or at the top. Yes, there is no Maggi or chai point at the peak as its hard to setup a shop there because of the rough surface. The peak you see in the picture above behind this board, that is where we are heading. 🙃 Looks far, eh!
George Everest Peak
From here I couldn't even see the destination because of the mist and clouds.
Now, we are heading to the peak just next to it which was just 100 metres away. The beautiful scenery between these peaks with those Tibetan Peace flags all around you, i have no words for that, look for yourself:
GypsyTip: A good night's sleep is important for a trek the next day. 😴
So, I decided to carry on the same straight one and cover the other path when heading down. So basically you must be wondering why there are two paths to the top.
The answer is simple, there are two mountain tops there, you can see the Tibetan flags tied from one peak to the other one. See the pic below. That is why there are two paths, the one I am standing on is the one you'll get to if you take the straight path ahead.
GypsyTip: Go for the straight one as the other one is a little more of a rock climbing one, so it was easy for me to get down from that one.
Started trekking towards the top, its really one of the hardest climbs as there is no proper path made for it.
There were two paths actually, one you could see where everyone was going from and that was straight up the hill but for the other one you have to take a left from a point in between. There is this rock along the way and at the top of it, there are these Tibetan flags hanging around, you'll know when you see it. So, you need to climb that and from up there you'll see a narrow path going further left.
It looked like this, you see the peak on the right, the other path is behind this rock.
Here are some pictures from the top:
Look how peaceful it is!
The Vibe was legit!
Spent around 3 hours at the peak.
View from the highest point
At an elevation of 2,005 m (6,578 ft) , it took me around 2.5 hours to cover the 3 km trek. Now, I will tell you why it was the best trek for me so far. I didn't drink a single drop of water from the beginning of the trek until i reached back. I've been to many other Himalayan treks and here I wanted to test myself if I could survive this and I did. Of course, there are some hacks to it.
The general rule for how much water to bring when hiking is 2 cups (about 1/2 liter) of water for every 1 hour of hiking for adults. Now, I kept my pace a little slow than normal, I was getting fatigued quite frequently because of dehydration. I kept my breath in control, took deep breaths in between by taking 60-90 second breaks. Also, I kept my mouth covered with the mask so as to keep the moisture intact. It might make breathing difficult, but its all about the control.
GypsyTip: Always carry water bottles with you, do not try this what I did, it was a one time thing 👽
This is how it was 😷😁
For the 2nd peak, there was a path, but took the hard way instead, climbing took me 2 minutes to reach at the top again. The views are more of the same as the other one, made some time lapse videos and headed back to the base from the 2nd path we talked about. I would not suggest you guys to take that path if its already late because on the other side of it, there is no sun light and there is no path, you have to find your own way man! 😵
Came across this milestone on that path in the middle of nowhere, if anyone knows about it, do let me know. Its still a mystery!
So, it took a whole day to explore this. If you want to catch the sunset at Cloud's End, I would suggest you get off this peak by 4 PM and head straight towards the Cloud's End. Well, I went a further ahead of the point marked on the MAP and there is a whole story behind it. Maybe for another blog, this ones already a big one so far. Peace ✌️ and Love ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

George Everest Peak Trek Mussoorie
Less known jewels of Mussoorie you would love to visit
Mussoorie is one of the nearest hill stations from Delhi/NCR. I have been there nearly 5-6 times and was travelling to Dehradun and Mussoorie again in the first week of September. This time I have planned to visit pending places from my bucket list near Mussoorie and Dehradun. Among them one is Robber’s Cave in Dehradun on which I have already shared an article and the second is George Everest Trek Mussoorie .
Mussoorie the queen of hills attracts many tourists from Delhi/NCR. The beautiful hills and free culture has become a center of attraction for tourists every year and hence get crowded on most of the public holidays.
Places to visit in Mussoorie listed below are known to everyone
- Kempty Fall
- Bhatta fall
- Gandhi Chowk
- Company garden
- Gun hill point
- And Mall road
There are other hidden gems of Mussoorie listed below
- Sir George Everest trek & House
First Seven places are very common so I am dedicating my post to Sir George Everest Trek & house and Cloud End in Mussoorie.
George Everest trek is named on the Colonel Sir George Everest. He came to India in 1830 and was responsible for completing the Great Trigonometric Survey of India. In earlier 1830?s to 1843, he was staying in Mussoorie which is now known as Sir George?s house and trek to peak is called as George Everest Trek.
Sir George Everest house is also popular as the Park Estate situated approx 6 kilometers from Gandhi Chowk/Library Bazaar.
How to reach George Everest house and Trek?
There are two ways to reach Sir George Everest house, one road is for bikers (because the road is damaged) and the other for four wheelers. The route was very beautiful, you can breathe in the fresh air of tall lush green trees. On the way you can also find a wishing well, where people put a coin and make a wish. Sir George has created the well when there used to be water scarcity.
George Everest Trek Mussoorie
The peak trek is about 0.5 km from Sir George Everest house. It takes 20- 30 minutes to reach the summit and difficulty level of the trek is moderate. The path of the trek looks scary in first look but believe me you can do it, it’s not that difficult that it seems. The top view will mesmerize you. The view you don?t want to be let go. I was there at the peak for 2 hours or more, doing nothing just enjoying the view of the sunset. This is also a favorite point for photographers across the country who came early in the morning to capture the sunrise or sunset in the evening. I was there at the time of sunset and tried to capture it in my camera.
Those who don’t want to summit the George Everest Peak can come back from George Everest house.
This place is totally safe, you can even carry your own camp and other party stuff to enjoy the bonfire in the night. But make sure you do not litter and destroy the beauty. Perceive your responsibility towards nature. You can also book camp/tents on rent at George Everest House. The costing of tents per person would be somewhere around 700-1000 per person with food and some adventure activities. There is a shop at George Everest house from where you can buy some edibles like Maggi, omelet, bread and other stuff.
Whenever I travel, especially to mountains I prefer to talk less and soak-in nature?s beauty. Mountains have their own charm as you will not get such fresh air in metro cities.
Cloud End is a point where you are above the clouds. There is a resort as well with the name of cloud end away from the city.
?Go and Explore? the lesser known Jewels of India. We are living in a country where you can experience different climatic conditions. Let yourself free to explore the beauty and trust me nature will not disappoint you.
Search the location on google maps If you are not able to find the way. Spare at least 3-4 hours for this place because it is so beautiful you will not want to come back from George Everest Trek Mussoorie.
Cloud End is the name of resort, but people go there to enjoy the beautiful view. The car route is same for both Sir George Everest and Cloud End separated with a diversion.
P.S: Do Not Litter, It is our responsibility to keep our heritage and nature clean.
