AT&T's prepaid brand offers you unlimited data, 5G, and even (HBO) Max.

International benefits

Phone compatibility, should you go with cricket wireless.

Cricket Wireless is a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) that's owned by AT&T and offers great prices, and access to AT&T's vast network. It uses the AT&T network exclusively, with LTE and 5G access on all plans. Unlike signing up for AT&T's service, there's no contract and there's no credit check needed if you go for Cricket Wireless. The prepaid carrier also works with most unlocked phones out there, thus making it a quick and easy way to get great coverage.

Cricket Wireless is one of the cheapest ways to get access to the massive AT&T network, with a range of plans (both unlimited & limited) that'll work for just about any customer. The MVNO also offers benefits such as cloud storage with all its plans.

Cricket Wireless plans

Cricket Wireless has four primary plans for phones, and they all come with unlimited talk and text in the U.S., access to AT&T's nationwide 5G network, as well as Cricket Call Defense. Cricket Call Defense is basically a service designed to identify and block fraudulent calls, plus identify spam and telemarketing callers. All the Cricket Wireless plans, except the 5GB option, are also available with a $5 auto-pay discount.

The topmost unlimited plan comes with 150GB of cloud storage that's offered via the myPhotoVault app, and access to ad-supported (HBO) Max streaming service. When you sign up with this plan, you can sign into (HBO) Max with your carrier information as long as your Cricket Wireless account is active.

Cricket Wireless also has multi-line discounts, so you can save more when you bring the whole family over. These are available for up to five lines.

Cricket Wireless has also partnered with Wi-Fi provider Boingo, as well as LinkNYC to provide Wi-Fi access for customers in the network's range. This benefits customers by providing fast and reliable data access in areas that may not be optimally suited for cellular connectivity, while not using up their data while connected. These areas include places such as sports stadiums and even military bases. LinkNYC has many points across New York City that provide Wi-Fi and other services, and your Cricket Wireless phone can automatically connect to these points too.

Cricket Wireless also offers three data-only plans under the 'Simply Data' brand, with 20GB, 50GB, and 100GB data sizes. All of these plans have nationwide 5G access and unlimited data speeds. They're great for someone who only needs data on a device without a phone number.

Cricket Wireless offers free calling in Mexico and Canada with all but the base 5GB plan. Do note that the 10GB plan has free calling in Mexico and Canada only for the new accounts. If you sign up for one of the unlimited plans, you'll also get unlimited texts to 37 countries worldwide. These destinations include:

  • Dominican Republic
  • Netherlands
  • South Korea
  • Switzerland

Cricket Wireless also has some calling add-ons available with certain plans. You can add 'Cricket International' for $5 per month for calls to landlines in 35 countries. You can also pay $15 per month for 'Cricket International Extra' add-on, which gives you 1,000 minutes of mobile-to-mobile calling in 31 countries. Finally, a few individual countries can be added for $10 to $15 per month, with features varying by country.

Cricket Wireless international add-ons

If you're ready for a new phone, you can buy one directly from Cricket Wireless. The MVNO has a decent selection of Androids and iPhones, including fairly new devices like the Galaxy A54 5G .  If you need help with paying for the device, easy financing is available through Affirm.

That being said, if you don't want to buy through the Cricket Wireless website, one of the best things about using AT&T's network is how well the majority of the best unlocked phones work with it. Almost any unlocked GSM-compatible device will work with a Cricket Wireless SIM card.

Cricket's BYOD program

Cricket Wireless still has a small list of compatible 5G phones on its website, but the users online have reported that 5G is working on compatible phones like the Galaxy S23 series without issues. Some less common phones may only work with LTE even if they support AT&T 5G bands, so it's worth checking online on the carrier's website or asking customer support if 5G is important for you.

Going the BYOD route gives you a few more options. The brand-new Galaxy S24 series , for example, is supported on 5G even though Cricket Wireless does not sell this model. Some other phones that should work on the network with 5G, like the OnePlus 9 Pro, are not supported, however. Other BYOD 5G devices may work with the proper APN settings, though it's best not to bet on unofficial support just yet. Still, with AT&T's growing 5G footprint , it's best to get a 5G phone at this point.

  • Back to the top ^

If you live and work in an area with great coverage, there's little reason not to try out a prepaid carrier. However, one of the main reasons to get AT&T postpaid instead of Cricket Wireless is premium data. This data is prioritized over other data on AT&T's network. The result is that if a tower is very congested, the Cricket Wireless customer may see speeds plummet while an AT&T customer won't. For most people, it won't be a big deal and for many, won't even be noticeable. Unfortunately, this all comes down to your area and the congestion, so it can be hard to predict.

At least you're not locked into Cricket Wireless if you decide it's not a good fit.

If you're looking at other prepaid carriers, there's a lot of competition. Mint Mobile , for example, offers similar data amounts for less money. And since it's based on T-Mobile, it also has great 5G coverage.

Still, Cricket Wireless continues to be among the best prepaid carriers you can get as long as you're looking at the unlimited plans, especially when you bring over more than one line.

AT&T network for less

Cricket Wireless lets you enjoy AT&T's nationwide 5G network without paying huge prices. Its well-rounded plans offer almost everything you could need, along with nice extras (e.g., cloud storage) thrown into the mix.

Things To Know About Cricket Wireless Before You Subscribe

Cricket Wireless was founded in the year 1999 by Leap Wireless. The company was initially an independent CDMA wireless network that had a partnership with Sprint. Sprint’s network was used by Cricket to provide domestic roaming for its customers. In July of 2013, Cricket Wireless was purchased by AT&T for the sum of $1.2 billion. About a year later, AT&T decided to kill off its own prepaid brand, AIO Wireless , in favor of merging it with Cricket.

Cricket Wireless’s Prepaid Phone Plans Explained

There are a total of 4 phone plans available for purchase and pricing starts at $30/month for a single line. Cricket uses AT&T’s 4G LTE and 5G networks for coverage. Here is a list of the available plan options with the data differences between each plan highlighted.

  • $30/month – 5GB high-speed data
  • $40/month – 10GB high-speed data, $35/month if you enable auto-pay billing
  • $55/month – unlimited high-speed data, $50/month if you enable auto-pay billing
  • $60/month – unlimited high-speed data plus 15GB hotspot, $55/month if you enable auto-pay billing

What you see is what you pay. Taxes and fees are included with the prices shown.

What Plan Features Are Supported By Cricket Wireless

Manage Your Cricket Wireless Account Through The myCricket App

Different Cricket Wireless phone plans support different features. But there are some features common to all plans. All plans include the following:

  • Unlimited Talk
  • Unlimited Text
  • 4G LTE/5G network access
  • WiFi Calling
  • myCricket App to manage account available on both iOS and Android

These are the plan features only available with specific plans:

  • 5G Network access – available on all plans. On 10/29/2021, Cricket Wireless announced all its current rate plan customers will get 5G network access
  • Hotspot – only natively available on the $60 unlimited plan which includes 15GB of hotspot data
  • Mexico and Canada roaming usage – only available on the two unlimited plans
  • HD Video streaming – only available on the $30 and $40 plans
  • Stream More – feature available to customers on the $30 and $40 plans that reduces video streaming to a resolution of 480p. Stream More helps customers save their high-speed data so that it lasts longer
  • Unlimited 2G data –  on the $30 and $40 plans, customers that run out of high-speed data have their data speeds reduced to 128Kbps for the rest of their billing cycles.

Available Phone Plan Add-Ons And Top-Ups

There are many different plan add-ons and top-up options available which are summarized in the chart below.

The Cricket International add-on allows subscribers to call unlimited to landlines in 35 countries . It costs $5/month. Cricket International Extra expands the international options to allow MMS picture messaging to 35 countries and offers 1,000 mobile to mobile minutes to 31 countries . The International Extra option costs $15/month. Also available are individual country add-ons that allow unlimited calling and messaging. Pricing for the add-on depends on the country the subscriber needs to call or text to but ranges between $10-$15/month. Available individual country add-ons include Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Philippines, and Vietnam.

Subscribers that run out of high-speed data during their billing cycles can add more priced at $10 for an additional 1GB. Data does not rollover to the next billing cycle.

Mobile hotspot can be added to Cricket’s $55 plan for an additional $10. The add-on includes 15GB of hotspot data. Hotspot top-ups also cost $10 for 15GB of data. The additional hotspot data top-up does not roll over to the next billing cycle.

Cricket’s Phone Plans Have Limitations

Cricket’s two unlimited plans come with a video streaming resolution limit. Videos typically stream at a resolution of about 480p or at a rate of about 1.5Mbps. According to Cricket’s mobile broadband terms and conditions , at any time the network gets congested, data speeds on the $55 unlimited plan may be temporarily slowed until the network congestion gets relieved. Customers on the $60 now have premium data, and will no longer be faced with slow downs compared to other customers when the network gets busy. Cricket updated its plans on 10/29/2021 and began offering premium data with the $60 plan.

Web Images Are Compressed

The mobile broadband terms and conditions also state that Cricket Wireless will compress images that its subscribers see while browsing websites over the cellular data network. This applies to all of Cricket’s plans. The images get compressed to either JPEG or GIF. The technology is used to help control network bandwidth so that all subscribers have an enjoyable experience while using the network. Images viewed over WiFi are not subjected to Cricket’s image compression algorithms.

If you are using hotspot, there is a limit to the number of devices that can be connected to the phone’s hotspot at once. A maximum of 6 devices can be simultaneously tethered and connected. Even if you have a hotspot-eligible phone plan, Cricket only allows a small number of phones to use the hotspot feature.

5G Network Compatible Phone Limitations

Nationwide 5G Network Access Is Offered By Cricket Wireless But Only With Select Plans And Devices

Cricket only allows phones that it sells and phones that are on AT&T’s phone whitelist to be used on its network. If you have or purchase one of the following phones from Cricket you can use it on Cricket’s 5G network with a compatible plan:

  • Apple iPhone 12
  • Apple iPhone 12 mini
  • Apple iPhone 12 Pro
  • Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • Apple iPhone 13 series
  • Apple iPhone 14 series
  • Apple iPhone 15 series
  • Cricket Magic 5G
  • Moto G Stylus 5G

  • Samsung Galaxy A54 5G
  • Samsung Galaxy A14 5G

  • Samsung Galaxy S24 series

You can expect the list of 5G compatible devices to change over time. For the most up-to-date list of compatible available phones, you can check out the list on Cricket’s website .

Expected Data Speeds

The only Cricket phone plan where data speeds may vary is the $60 plan. According to the company’s mobile broadband disclosure, 4G LTE data speeds on the plan can be expected to be in the range of:

Expected 5G data speeds have not been disclosed.

Family And Group Plan Discount Options

All of the single-line plans are available with multi-line discounts except for the $30 plan. • 3 lines – $110/month

  • 5 lines – $160/month

Data Only Plans Are Available

Cricket sells data-only plans. You can scroll down below to see the full list. The plans are all compatible with Cricket’s 5G network and all plans include roaming in Mexico and Canada at no additional charge. If you want a data-only plan you’ll have to purchase a 5G hotspot device from Cricket. Customers that run out of data on a data-only plan can add a one time top-up priced at $10 for 15GB.

There’s A Refer A Friend Program

Cricket Wireless Refer A Friend Program

Subscribers that refer a friend to Cricket Wireless by using their referral link will earn a $25 account credit for every referral. Subscribers that signup for Cricket Wireless through a referral link also earn a $25 account credit. The credits do not get awarded to either account until after the new subscriber has completed 60 days of active service.

A maximum of 10 referral credits can be claimed per calendar year limiting potential earnings to $250. Given that Cricket does not sell any phone plans under $30, customers are unable to earn a year’s worth of free service through the referral program. This is in contrast to many other providers where customers are allowed to earn enough credits to get free service for a year.

Supported Phones And BYOD Devices

Cricket does sell a variety of devices, sometimes offering free phones to new customers. Many phones can be purchased in stores such as Walmart and Target, however, Cricket phones were withdrawn from Best Buy in October 2020.

Device Financing Is Offered

Cricket Phone Payment Plan Option

Brand new phones can be expensive. If you prefer not to pay for the whole thing at once, Cricket offers a Lease-To-Own phone payment plan option run through Progressive Leasing . No credit is needed to be eligible for the payment plan. However, customers must be 18 years or older, be able to provide a valid ID, a social security number, a credit or debit card, and bank information. A maximum of 5 phones and 5 accessories can be purchased on a lease. Phones qualifying for the lease program must be priced at $149.99 or more after all discounts and promotions are applied. The payment plan option is not available in the following states: MN, NJ, VT, WI, WY. The standard lease-to-own option is for 12-months.

Insurance Options

Cricket Wireless offers two different device insurance programs, Cricket Protect which costs $8/month, and Cricket Protect Plus which costs $11/month. Both plans include comprehensive coverage in case of accidental drops, water damage, and screen breaks. However, there are deductibles. There’s a $29 deductible for cracked screen repairs. Deductibles for other incidences may range in price between $10 and $250 and depend on the phone. Both plans also come with online photo and video storage. Users on the basic Cricket Protect plan get 16GB of cloud photo storage. Those subscribed to Cricket Protect Plus get unlimited storage with photos and videos stored at full resolution. For both plans, a maximum of 3 insurance claims are allowed per 12-month period. On the base plan, screen repairs count towards the 3 claim limit. Cricket Protect Plus subscribers get unlimited screen repairs as screen repairs do not count against the 3-claim limit with that plan.

BYOD Options

If you already own a phone or device that is compatible with the AT&T network, it should also work with Cricket Wireless. T-Mobile SIM-unlocked phones are also compatible. Most manufacturer-unlocked phones sold in the USA including devices from Motorola  and  Samsung are suitable for use with Cricket Wireless.

Where To Buy Service Plans And SIM Cards

You may subscribe to Cricket by visiting any one of their nationwide network of stores or online through their website. It is advised that you do not signup through one of their retail stores, because they charge extra fees when you do. Plans and SIM cards can also be purchased elsewhere often at a discount. Refill and SIM cards can be found at Amazon ,  Walmart , Best Buy, and Target.

How To Port Out Of Cricket Wireless

You need your account number which is found when you login to your Cricket Wireless dashboard. You also need to know your pin number which you setup when you created your account. If you do not know it, you need to contact Cricket Wireless .

Phone Unlock Policy

Cricket Wireless will unlock your phone for you free of charge if any of the following conditions have been met:

  • The phone you want to unlock has been active on Cricket for at least 6 months

Cricket Cell Phone Plans Review

Cricket offers super-cheap wireless prices, but it comes at the cost of data speed.

3.5 out of 5 stars

Cricket Wireless specializes in affordable plans with a good network provider. Even though the commercials might be annoying, there are some delightfully inexpensive Cricket Wireless plans. You also get decent coverage thanks to how Cricket uses AT&T’s mobile network .

  • Unlimited plans
  • Family plans
  • Cell phones and devices
  • Performance

AT&T/Cricket coverage map

  • Customer experience

Cricket unlimited plans

Cricket offers two unlimited wireless plans, and while they've throttled unlimited speeds in the past, Cricket now offers premium unlimited data. This means speeds will only slow down from congested usage, rather than slowing down due to hitting a data cap.

And there are no catches with unlimited calls or unlimited texting.

The differences between Cricket Wireless plans really boil down to data usage and whether or not you want to set up autopay.

Here’s a bit of pro advice: you should do autopay and save a couple of bucks every month. Do that, and you’ve got yourself a super cheap wireless bill.

The biggest catch with Cricket Wireless plans is how your download speeds cap at 4 Mbps (4G) or 8 Mbps (LTE) and streaming speeds cap at 1.5 Mbps.

Translation: you’ll have a slower connection than you would with another mobile company.

Of course, we’re talking a few extra seconds when you’re googling something. If you’re pretty patient with your internet and streaming speeds, you can get an affordable unlimited plan.

You can also get a hotspot connection, but it’ll cost you an extra $10 a month if you don't get it included with the Unlimited $60 plan. You’ll get decent speeds for the first 8 GB, but after that, things will slow to an absolute crawl at 128 Kbps. Yikes.

So, how does Cricket compare with the  best cell phone carriers ? Let’s take a look:

Don’t you love it when you organize search results by price and find there’s a super-affordable option? That’s where Cricket Wireless comes in.

Before you get too excited, keep in mind that Cricket’s wireless data speeds are pretty slow. This isn’t, like, a “Tortoise and the Hare” situation either. Cricket is the tortoise, everyone else is the hare, and in this case, the tortoise loses terribly.

But if you can live with the slower internet download speeds and so-so streaming quality, you do get an awfully cheap wireless cell phone plan with a decent network.

Cricket Wireless family plans

Cricket allows new customers to add up to five lines of service onto one account, saving $10 more with each added line. The maximum discount you can get is $150. And while we don't love a savings cap, we've definitely seen other carriers with weaker family plans or no group-saving features at all.

Before you decide on a plan, you should probably determine how much you value quick internet speeds. Sure, you can save a pretty penny by opting for the slower speed, but you might be giving up some of your sanity in the process. Seconds at a time. While waiting for your Instagram stories to load.

Now, let’s compare Cricket’s family plans with the other major carriers out there.

Cricket’s family plans aren’t a steal like the individual unlimited plans are. Compared to the competition, the family plans aren’t significantly cheaper—which is disappointing.

Metro by T-Mobile and Cricket Wireless are essentially the Spider-man pointing meme when it comes to family plans. Both offer similar prices and neither offers lightning-fast speeds. The advantage with Cricket is that you might save some up-front costs compared to Metro.

Cricket cell phones and devices

Cricket is compatible with most of the flagship phones out there. Or maybe you like Cricket phones less traveled—and if so, you can get Nokia, Motorola, and Alcatel phones as well.

If you’re a Google Pixel fan, though, you won’t be able to buy one directly through Cricket. But you can buy an unlocked Google Pixel and set up your network that way.

Here are some of the most popular phones compatible with Cricket.

How good is Cricket performance?

Data speed will never be Cricket’s claim to fame, but its overall service coverage is surprisingly good. Cricket uses AT&T’s network, which means it offers the same coverage that you’d get with a more expensive carrier. Currently, AT&T covers around 68% of the country with 4G coverage. 1

The only catch is that your data speeds can be deprioritized in favor of AT&T users in crowded areas. In other words, your internet connection might drop out of the blue in a crowded Costco because AT&T's network gives priority to its own users.

Check out the map below to get an idea of what your coverage will be like with Cricket Wireless.

Cricket customer service

There is a treasure trove of awful experiences 2 with Cricket customer service agents. So we decided to find out for ourselves.

We had a simple question—can we use an unlocked Google Pixel phone with our Cricket account? We were only on hold for a few minutes, but when we got through, we didn’t get much help.

We got the confirmation you can use a Google Pixel with Cricket, but when we asked for additional information on how to make the switch, they just told us to “look online.”

Now, our agent might’ve just been having a bad day, but in our experience, Cricket customer service is consistent with its poor reviews.

There are quite a few MVNOs that use AT&T's network like Pure TalkUSA , and Straight Talk that have cheap cell phone plans to offer as well.

Does Cricket have overage charges or hidden fees?

Would it be a wireless provider if it didn’t have a few hidden fees? Sadly, there are some additional Cricket fees to consider.

The fees are nothing egregious, but they are annoying. Who wants to pay a $25 activation fee? No one, that’s who.

Recap: Is Cricket Wireless good?

If you take anything from this Cricket review, it’s this formula:

Cheap wireless + solid coverage - bad internet = Cricket Wireless.

For some people (like Instagram models), Cricket is probably not the hashtag best choice, but for folks who want a phone more than a smartphone, it makes a lot of sense.

  • Plans: Cricket offers straight-up plans that are competitive with other providers. Whether you want an unlimited plan or a family plan, there’s a good chance Cricket will be your cheapest option.
  • Coverage: Cricket uses AT&T’s network, so you can expect reasonable coverage if you live and work in a city. Out in the country, though, you’re out of luck.
  • Speed: With a download speed of 4 Mbps and streaming speeds of 1.5 Mbps, Cricket is no Speed Racer.
  • Customer service: Cricket doesn’t have the best customer service, but for simple questions, they’ll get the job done.

Overall: Cricket is precisely as advertised. It’s cheap, works, and doesn’t offer blazing internet download speeds. It’s a perfect phone for those who primarily want to talk and text, with minor app usage.

If you have an unlocked GSM phone, you can switch over to Cricket. You can get help in a Cricket store or by calling its customer support.

Cricket has  two international plans —Cricket International for $5 a month and Cricket International Extra for $15 a month. The main difference is that you can record video messages with the International Extra plan. Both plans come with international texting.

Without an international plan, you can still make calls to Mexico and Canada, but you cannot make calls beyond North American countries.

Yes. You’ll just need to provide some extra information:

  • Current wireless phone number
  • Account login and password
  • Last four digits of your Social Security number
  • Billing ZIP code

You’ll get a new SIM card with your old phone number. This will make your life much easier.

Yes. First things first, you’ll need to save your contacts using a cloud storage service like Google Contacts or iCloud on your current device. Once you do that, you can use that same service to transfer contacts to your new phone.

If you’re switching from an old-school flip phone to a smartphone, check out the user manual from your old phone. It should have instructions on transferring contacts to a new phone.

Cricket Wireless Review: 5 Things To Know Before You Sign Up

  • Mobile & Electronics
  • Online Banking
  • Phones & Mobile Devices
  • TV, Satellite & Cable

If you’re looking for ways to save on your cell phone bill, you may be considering Cricket Wireless as your provider.

In this article, I’ll take a closer look at Cricket Wireless’s plans and pricing, how to get started, and what to expect from Cricket Wireless’s service.

I signed up for Cricket Wireless for 30 days to try out the service myself. I’ve also compared more than 70 different available phone plans to see how Cricket holds up.

This article was updated in March 2024 and I review it every six months. Detailed notes on all updates can be found here .

What To Know Before Signing Up for Cricket Wireless

Cricket Wireless is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that provides access to AT&T’s cellular network. It’s a reliable service provider and was even named one of the best full-service MVNOs by the American Customer Satisfaction Index in 2023. At Clark.com, we also recommend Cricket Wireless as one of AT&T’s best MVNOs .

Monthly plans begin as low as $30 per month per line for 5GB of high-speed data. It’s easy and free to activate service by buying a SIM card online, but know that there’s a $25 activation fee if you visit a Cricket Wireless store in person. For this reason, I recommend activating your service online.

That’s what I did when I tested out Cricket Wireless’s 5GB plan for 30 days to explore its coverage, call and text performance, customer service and more.

Table of Contents:

Plans and pricing, activation process, call and text performance, data speeds, customer service, methodology.

Below, you’ll find more information about Cricket Wireless including what plans are available, how reliable the service is and whether or not you should consider it as your mobile carrier.

Cricket Wireless offers four different monthly plans. You can join any plan with just a single line and add up to five lines for additional discounts.

In the table below, you’ll see how much each Cricket Wireless monthly plan costs per line per month. Prices include autopay where discounts apply; taxes and fees are included.

All of the plans mentioned above include unlimited talk, text and picture messaging in the United States as well as HD voice and Wi-Fi calling. Each Cricket Wireless plan also provides 5G access on capable devices and unlimited data at 128 Kbps after your monthly data usage limit is reached.

One of the plans worth noting is Cricket Wireless’s unlimited plan: It’s available for $25 per line with four lines. That means all four lines will get unlimited high-speed data for $100 total! That’s always a good price for a multiline phone plan .

Customers on this unlimited plan will have access to unlimited high-speed data; however, they may notice slow data speeds when the network is busy. Cricket Wireless’s top-tier unlimited data plan claims to offer premium data that won’t slow based on usage.

The most expensive monthly unlimited plan is also the only plan from Cricket Wireless that includes mobile hotspot. It includes 15GB of mobile hotspot data, 150GB of cloud storage and a free Max subscription (with ads).

In addition to monthly plans, Cricket Wireless also recently introduced three new multi-month plans. These plans are only available online to new customers, and you’ll have to prepay for 3-12 months of service at the time of purchase.

Here are Cricket Wirless’ new multi-month plans:

  • $120 for three months of unlimited service ($40 per month)
  • $210 for six months of unlimited service ($35 per month)
  • $360 for 12 months of unlimited service ($30 per month)

Customers on these plans will have all the same benefits of Cricket Wireless’ $55/month unlimited plan.

When it comes to charges and additional fees , I didn’t experience many with Cricket Wireless. I avoided the activation fee by purchasing my SIM card online. The SIM card did cost $9.99 online ( now $2.99 ), but the alternative is to pay a $25 activation fee at a Cricket Wireless store.

All Cricket Wireless plans are prepaid monthly. There aren’t any long-term contracts or overage fees. To learn more about each specific plan, visit Cricket Wireless’s website.

If you decide to switch to Cricket Wireless, I recommend activating your service online to avoid the $25 activation fee. The process is fast and easy to do. In this section, I’ll walk you through the process I followed when I tried out the 5GB plan myself. I’ll also share how I was able to get a month of service for less than $16!

To get started, I visited Cricket Wireless’s website and chose the 5GB monthly plan. Then, I was able to choose between buying a Cricket Wireless phone (some are even free) and bringing my own device. I chose to bring my own.

Then I checked my device’s compatibility by entering its IMEI number.

Cricket Wireless website where customers can check device compatibility

Once I verified that my phone was compatible, I selected the type of SIM card I’d need. The options included voice and data or data only, new customer or current customer, and porting my old phone number or getting a new one.

The SIM kit did cost $9.99 online (now $ 2.99 ). Once I added it to my shopping cart, I was prompted to enter my ZIP code. Then, I was able to add an additional line or proceed to checkout.

Cricket Wireless shopping cart displaying the final total.

The total was $30 for the monthly plan plus $9.99 for the SIM card and free next-business-day shipping. My bill came to $40.74 after taxes. The taxes were applied only to the SIM card; the monthly plan rate was $30 exactly moving forward.

Final order details including $9.99 SIM Card Kit, $30 plan and $0.75 sales tax for the SIM card.

Fortunately, I was able to find an offer from my Chase credit card for $25 cash back on Cricket Wireless, so I was actually able to test the phone plan for only $15.74 total! Be sure to check offers on your cash back credit cards before switching phone service providers for potential additional savings.

During this process, I was also able to choose whether or not I wanted to opt into autopay. After verifying the information and agreeing to the terms and conditions, I placed my order.

The next day, I received an email shipment confirmation. I received my SIM card in the mail the following business day.

voyage cricket wireless

I inserted the Cricket Wireless SIM card, turned my phone on and went to cricketwireless.com/activate. There, I had to choose my device type, purchase location and the fact that I’m a new customer.

I was then able to enter my order number and Cricket phone number to activate my service. All of this information was in my initial email order confirmation.

Activate Your Device with Cricket Wireless

After that, I restarted my phone, and I was able to place a test call.

Over the course of 30 days, I tried out Cricket Wireless’s service by making and receiving phone calls as well as sending and receiving text messages.

During the month that I tested Cricket Wireless’s service, I experienced consistently reliable, clear service with no dropped calls or undelivered text messages. However, service can vary from one area to the next.

Cricket Wireless provides access to AT&T’s network and nationwide coverage. To see if the Cricket Wireless network offers coverage in your area, check out its coverage map .

Cricket Wireless coverage map

If you visit Cricket Wireless’s website , you can enter your address or ZIP code to see if you’ll have service in your area. You can also see what specific types of coverage is available including 4G/LTE and 5G data.

Cricket Wireless offers access to AT&T’s 4G/LTE and 5G networks. Based on my experience as well as AT&T’s coverage map , you’ll likely have reliable access to data with this MVNO.

To make sure you’ll be covered before switching to Cricket Wireless, be sure to enter your address on its coverage map online . You can also look at AT&T’s coverage map to get a better idea of service in your area since this is the network Cricket Wireless uses.

In addition to good coverage, you’ll also likely experience average download speeds with Cricket Wireless. When I tried out Cricket Wireless, I checked the data speeds using speediest.net by Ookla .

Speedtest by Ookla displaying 21.24 Mbps data download speeds for Cricket Wireless

The download speed was usually around 20 Mbps. The fastest download speed I saw was 31.63 Mbps, while the slowest download speed I saw was 12.27 Mbps.

For context, Netflix recommends a download speed of 3 Mbps or higher for streaming HD. Amazon says you’ll need a download speed of at least 1 Mbps for SD video and 5 Mbps for HD video on Prime.

Based on these numbers, Cricket Wireless’s high-speed data is fast enough to do most things online, including streaming SD video.

Unfortunately, the only plan that Cricket Wireless offers that includes mobile hotspot is its most expensive unlimited data plan. I wasn’t able to test Cricket Wireless’s mobile hotspot download speeds on the 5GB plan.

However, it was easy to monitor my mobile data usage throughout the month on the Cricket Wireless app. The plan I tried came with 5GB of high-speed data monthly, but there are several different options available. If you choose a plan that isn’t unlimited, you’ll experience slower speeds once you’ve exceeded your monthly high-speed data limit.

Cricket Wireless mobile app displaying 3.13GB remaining for monthly data usage

Good customer service is important in a phone carrier. Unfortunately, nearly all major companies seem to be struggling with it these days. Whether it’s extended wait times or unhelpful representatives, dealing with customer service with phone service providers can be a pain.

To see how long I’d have to wait for service and what type of service I’d get, I contacted Cricket Wireless in both possible ways: via phone and online chat.

To contact Cricket Wireless, you can visit the website or mobile app to chat with an agent or call Cricket Wireless at 1-800-274-2538 Monday-Saturday between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. EST. Online chat representatives are available from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Monday-Saturday as well as Sunday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.

When I contacted the Cricket Wireless customer service phone line, I was warned that wait times were longer than normal. Ultimately, I had to wait around seven minutes to talk to a customer representative on the phone. The automated messaging system can be tricky to navigate, but I just continually asked to speak with a representative when I was offered automated assistance.

But I was connected with a live agent in under two minutes via online chat. The automated system for chat was also a little difficult to navigate, but the agent I was connected to was knowledgeable and polite.

Before I began testing phone plans, I highlighted the key factors that I would be exploring. This way, I would be able to accurately compare phone plans and get a full overview of what to expect from the service.

Here are the key factors I focused on while trying out each phone plan:

  • Length of Time. I tested each phone plan for 30 days to observe the network’s reliability and gather feedback from friends and family regarding service.
  • Signing Up. I signed up for each phone plan myself to document the process of getting started, testing phone compatibility or bringing your own device, how long it takes to receive the SIM card and the activation process.
  • Reliability. I used my personal AT&T line as a base to see how often the tested phone plan had service and noted any dropped calls/undelivered text messages.
  • Service. During the month, I made/received at least 15 calls and sent/received at least 15 text messages. I also tested the phone’s data speed speedtest.net.
  • Customer Support. During my time testing out each phone service, I contacted customer support in all available ways to determine which method is best, how long it took to reach a person and how helpful the experience was.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, I had a great experience during the month that I tested Cricket Wireless for this review. I had good service and coverage throughout the whole experience, and the data speeds were fast enough for basic browsing and streaming.

I didn’t experience any dropped calls or undelivered text messages with Cricket Wireless, and I didn’t have a bad experience with customer service either. The app was very intuitive and useful for checking data usage and paying bills online.

However, I do wish that all of the plans came with mobile hotspot data, and I hate that there’s a $25 activation fee for purchasing your SIM card in person at a Cricket Wireless store.

If you’re thinking about switching to Cricket Wireless, ask yourself these questions first:

  • Is AT&T’s network strong in your area? You can check Cricket Wireless’s coverage map and AT&T’s coverage map online to see if you’ll have service in your area before switching.
  • Is your current phone compatible with Cricket Wireless? You can check your phone’s compatibility online . Cricket Wireless does offer phones from $0 , but you can save even more by bringing your own phone and opting for a cheaper plan.
  • Are you comfortable activating the service online? Cricket Wireless charges a $25 activation fee in-store whether you’re bringing your own phone or buying a new one. You can avoid this fee by purchasing your SIM card online.

Cricket Wireless review: An in-depth analysis

Cricket Wireless might be on your radar as a potential carrier if you're looking to save money on your cell phone plan.

With plans starting at around $30 a month, Cricket Wireless offers a small choice of plans on the AT&T 5G & 4G LTE network.

Activating your service is straightforward and free when done online, although opting for in-store activation incurs a $25 fee.

In this Cricket Wireless review, I'll cover different aspects of the carrier, such as its plans, network options, performance, customer service, and alternatives. By the time we're through, you'll have everything you need to know if Cricket Wireless is the right carrier for you.

What is Cricket Wireless?

Cricket Wireless is an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) that utilizes the AT&T network. Founded in 1999, this low-cost carrier has been around for a quarter of a century. AT&T acquired Cricket Wireless in 2014, and it has a proven track record for reliability and saving consumers money on their phone service.

What makes Cricket Wireless different?

The highest-tier plan from Cricket Wireless gives you Max (with ads) for free. It's extremely unusual to find perks like streaming services on any MVNOs, so this really gives the carrier an edge.

Cricket Wireless plans offer multi-line and multi-month discounts to help reduce your costs if you're looking for plans for the whole family or to commit for longer.

However, these savings are still not as nifty as those of other MVNOs on the market.

Plans & pricing

AT&T vs Cricket Wireless comparison

Keep your AT&T phone, number & coverage: Save $420 per year

How much does Cricket Wireless cost?

Plans start at around $30 a month for a single line. If that sounds pricey, that's because it is. That's not where this carrier really comes through with the value. If you need a family plan, on the other hand, that's where the savings can pack a punch.

If you do just need one line, your best bet is with the carrier's multi-month plans. You can save almost half off the regular prices by purchasing 3, 6, or 12 months at a time.

Is Cricket Wireless a good value?

Cricket Wireless plans offer good value if you need multiple lines, and the plans are competitive in terms of features and coverage.

However, when it comes to value, there are a number of other low-cost carriers that can beat Cricket Wireless to get your money's worth.

Compare Cricket vs other carriers

During my research, I found numerous carriers with significantly cheaper plans and better customer ratings:

  • Boost Infinite vs Cricket Wireless
  • Boost Mobile vs Cricket Wireless

Network coverage

What network does cricket wireless use.

Since AT&T owns this carrier, that's the network it uses to provide cellular service. If the AT&T network is new for you, it's worth checking out our Cricket Wireless coverage map before signing up to ensure coverage in your area.

Does Cricket Wireless have good coverage?

AT&T boasts the second-largest coverage area of the big three networks. That means most people across the US will have excellent service with this provider. You can check out the best coverage in your area to see which network is strongest.

Does Cricket Wireless have 5G coverage?

Yes. As long as your device supports 5G technology, you'll be able to access AT&T's 5G coverage where available. You can see how it compares to Verizon and T-Mobile in the 2023 OpenSignal 5G Experience Report .

Cricket Wireless 5G coverage map

The FCC collects coverage data, which only offers an approximate indication and doesn't account for indoor coverage. The actual speed and performance can vary depending on your location and device. The reception you experience is influenced by local conditions and elements like natural and artificial physical features in your area.

How fast are Cricket Wireless data speeds?

Data speeds can differ depending on your network, location, and device.

Customer service

Does cricket wireless have good customer service.

Experiences with this carrier vary significantly.

BBB raters and the Cricket Wireless Trustpilot scores reflect pretty low customer satisfaction ratings, while our reviewers put the provider squarely in the middle of the road. You can see what real people have to say in our Cricket Wireless customer reviews .

Customer support is available through several venues:

  • Dial: 611 from your Cricket Wireless phone
  • Call: 1-800-CRICKET (274-2538) from any phone Mon-Sat 10 am - 8 pm EST

Reviews are mixed regarding customer service and coverage, but customers, in general, seem to love the app and give the myCricket app high ratings.

  • Cricket Wireless Trustpilot rating : 1.6 stars (325)

What are some common complaints about Cricket Wireless?

Some customers have complained about customer service not being able to resolve their issues. Others have noticed a billing issue where they were accidentally charged twice.

A few subscribers have experienced frustrations with defective SIM cards as well.

SIM activation

Is it easy to switch.

Activating your Cricket Wireless SIM card should be simple and straightforward. The process typically takes minutes.

Does Cricket Wireless support eSIM?

Cricket Wireless supports eSIM in Apple iPhone and the most recent Samsung models. Activating your eSIM is even faster and more convenient. Purchase your plan and get going installing it right away- no need to wait for a SIM card in the mail.

Phone selection

What phones do they have.

While the carrier's phone selection is modest, it does offer several very budget-friendly device options, as well as a handful of the latest smartphones. Plus, phone financing is available via Affirm.

Can I bring my own phone to Cricket Wireless?

Save money by using your current device with Cricket Wireless plans. You can bring your existing phone number, too. You just need to verify that you have a compatible device that will work on the AT&T network.

Is my phone compatible?

While most 4G and 5G smartphones are compatible with any network, you'll be able to check on the Cricket Wireless site during sign-up.

Cricket Wireless features

My viewpoint - is cricket wireless any good.

Short answer: Cricket Wireless is like the "old reliable" of MVNOs. It's been saving its customers money for 25 years and is currently owned by AT&T. Naturally, its coverage is provided on the AT&T 5G & 4G LTE network, which allows customers comparable coverage at a lower cost. Of course, there isn't a single carrier or plan that is universally the best choice for all types of data usage. So, I've conducted comparisons of carriers and plans to help you determine which one fits your specific needs.

Is Cricket Wireless worth it?

Cricket Wireless offers a variety of options, including multi-month subscriptions and family plan discounts. They also offer some pretty attractive features at first glance.

AT&T owns this MVNO, so you'll get their 5G and 4G LTE wireless coverage.

But if you're looking for a single-line plan, Cricket Wireless plans come in pretty high. With a more competitive market than when they first launched, there are a number of MVNOs that can offer plans at a much more budget-friendly price, with features that you really need.

Would I use Cricket Wireless?

Short answer: If you have access to the AT&T network, Cricket Wireless can certainly save you money on your phone bill. However, with a lack of mobile hotspot data options and international calling features, it doesn't fit my needs. I feel there is a large selection of low-cost carriers that provide more features that people need on a regular basis at much more budget-friendly prices.

Cricket Wireless FAQs

Where can i get a cricket wireless sim card.

You have the option to either purchase a Cricket Wireless SIM card online or buy one from a physical store nearest to you. You get free 2-day shipping. If you bring your own phone number, shipping can take a little longer.

You can also purchase them from third-party retailers such as Walmart, eBay, and Amazon, but I recommend buying directly from the carrier to simplify the process.

What are some alternatives to Cricket Wireless?

Various options are available, including Red Pocket Mobile , Boost Mobile , and Tello . You can compare other prepaid cell phone plans to find the perfect fit.

Does Cricket Wireless have data-only plans?

If you're in search of data plans for a tablet or other device, this provider does offer them. Or, for more options, you can compare a range of data only plans on the AT&T network .

Does Cricket Wireless allow mobile hotspot use?

The carrier does offer dedicated hotspot data, but only with its most expensive plan and not if you use the multiple-month option. For the second-highest plan, you can pay extra for hotspot data.

Does Cricket Wireless have multi-line discounts?

Yes, each line drops the price a considerable amount, making it an option for families.

Does Cricket Wireless charge activation fees?

Yes - if you buy in-store. If you order online, there's no activation fee.

Is there an app for managing my account?

Yes. The myCricket app helps you do virtually anything you need to, from paying your bill to adding features.

Does Cricket Wireless have international calling & roaming?

You'll get free calling and roaming to Canada and Mexico with every plan except the 5GB version. International calling packages for other countries are available as an add-on. Roaming in other countries isn't supported.

Recap: Is Cricket Wireless the best cell phone plan?

Cricket Wireless is a cost-effective alternative to going directly to AT&T, offering the same coverage at a lower price. Although no single carrier or plan is perfect for every individual, this carrier is particularly attractive if you've got a houseful of cell phones.

But with a highly competitive market, I don't believe Cricket Wireless gives as much value for money as some other MVNOs. So it's worth comparing other MVNO plans to see if there are other options that fit your needs at a more affordable price.

Keep the following key points in mind when deciding whether this carrier is right for you:

  • Plans: There's a small selection of plans to choose from, although the majority are unlimited plans. It is quite pricey for single-line plans; the best discount is with multiple lines.
  • Coverage: This cell phone provider is known as a full-service MVNO because they're owned by AT&T, which also provides 5G & 4G LTE coverage.
  • Phones: You can bring your own phone or choose from a small selection of new devices.
  • Customer experience: The overall user experience is mixed, although there are varying opinions about customer service.
  • Multi-month option: If you love to have your bill paid up for months at a time, this provider offers savings the longer you commit.

How we reviewed Cricket Wireless

To select the best carriers and plans, MoneySavingPro's team of experts evaluated over 30 different carriers.

Carriers were rated in five categories, with a star rating from 1-5, with 5 stars being the best. We then calculate the overall star rating using the five categories:

  • Value for money: We compare carriers based on price, features, benefits, and promotions. It's not just about the lowest price but getting the most bang for your buck.
  • Coverage: We look at network 5G and 4G LTE coverage across the US. We use coverage maps to determine service availability and data speeds in urban, suburban, and rural locations.
  • Customer experience: We take into account items such as current user experience, website and app usability, ease of switching, and customer service in terms of availability, channels, and satisfaction ratings.
  • Transparency: We assess whether carrier pricing is clear and straightforward. We examine the fine print to check for hidden fees, confusing terms or conditions, and misleading offers to ensure upfront, honest prices and advertising.
  • Range of choice: We evaluate the diversity of plan options to determine if they fit the individual needs of all customers.

Cricket Wireless 5G Coverage

Cricket Wireless 5G coverage map

Cricket Wireless provides 5G coverage on AT&T’s 5G networks.

AT&T currently has the second largest 5G network in the United States right now.

AT&T 5G covers 295 million people, or over 85% of Americans.

Cricket Wireless gets full access to both AT&T’s 5G and 5G+ networks. AT&T’s regular 5G network boasts impressive coverage while using the new 5G technologies. The AT&T 5G+ network uses mid-band spectrum to deliver substantially faster cellular data speeds.

AT&T 5G+ covers 200 million people.

AT&T’s combination of a robust coverage footprint and reasonable data speeds have it ranking as the #1 best network in many states.

You can check what network ranks best in your area using our free Coverage Check tool.

Cricket Wireless LTE Coverage

Cricket Wireless LTE coverage map

Cricket Wireless provides nationwide LTE coverage on AT&T’s expansive LTE network.

AT&T LTE covers 99% of Americans.

It is also currently the network with the most coverage across the United States, covering just over 55% of the country.

Cricket Wireless Coverage by State

Cricket wireless 5g coverage by state, cricket wireless data speeds by state, cricket wireless vs. verizon coverage.

Cricket Wireless has a bit more coverage than Verizon.

Cricket Wireless covers 74.6% of the U.S. while Verizon covers 71.5% of the U.S.

Both networks are excellent and cover a huge amount of the country:

When it comes to 5G coverage, Cricket Wireless has substantially more 5G coverage than Verizon.

Cricket Wireless covers 41.4% of the U.S. and over 295 million people with 5G.

Verizon’s 5G network covers only 230 million people and just 14.7% of the U.S.:

Both Cricket Wireless and Verizon have similar data speeds.

According to data submitted by users, Cricket Wireless has a median download speed of 61.17 Mbps. Verizon has a median download speed of 61.23 Mbps. Both carriers have similar median upload speeds, too. Cricket Wireless got 11.29 Mbps for upload and Verizon got 11.65 Mbps.

Overall, both Cricket Wireless and Verizon have exceptional coverage across the United States.

You will likely get great service on both carriers in cities and in more rural areas.

You will find more 5G coverage on Cricket Wireless though, which could mean having slightly faster data speeds.

However, coverage can vary a lot from state to state or city to city. It may not be a bad idea to use the Coverage Check tool to see what carrier is better where you live.

It may also be worth checking the Verizon coverage map to see how it performs in your area.

Cricket Wireless vs. T-Mobile Coverage

Cricket Wireless has better coverage than T-Mobile does.

Even though both carriers cover over 99% of Americans, Cricket Wireless covers an impressive 74.6% of the land area in the United States.

T-Mobile, meanwhile, only covers 59.5% of the land area in the U.S.

If you travel to more rural areas or road trip across the country, you are more likely to have service on Cricket:

Cricket Wireless has a bit less 5G coverage than T-Mobile does.

Cricket Wireless covers 41.4% of the U.S. with 5G while T-Mobile covers 49.0% of the U.S. with 5G.

Cricket Wireless is a bit slower than T-Mobile.

Most of Cricket’s 5G coverage is made up of low-band 5G, which has about the same speeds as 4G LTE.

T-Mobile, on the other hand, has been rolling out their Ultra Capacity 5G network. This uses new mid-band 5G spectrum, which is way faster. T-Mobile Ultra Capacity 5G covers over 275 million people.

In terms of actual numbers, Cricket Wireless has median download speeds of 61.17 Mbps.

T-Mobile is 2.5x faster than Cricket with a median download speed of 152.34 Mbps.

Both carriers have similar median upload speeds ranging from 10 to 20 Mbps.

Overall, T-Mobile will likely deliver a better experience in cities and densely populated areas thanks to its faster 5G. However, Cricket Wireless will give you coverage in more locations thanks to its expansive coverage footprint. Cricket may be a better option if you travel outside of cities or do road trips across the U.S.

Of course, coverage and data speeds vary a lot from location to location, so check coverage in your area with our coverage check tool.

You can also check the T-Mobile coverage map to see what service looks like in your area.

Cricket Wireless vs. AT&T Coverage

Cricket Wireless has the exact same coverage as AT&T because Cricket is owned by AT&T and uses the AT&T network for coverage.

What is BridgePay?

BridgePay allows you to split your Cricket bill into two separate payments. As long as you get set up within seven (7) days before or after the start of your billing cycle, you'll get 7 additional days to make the second payment.

BridgePay can be set up in a Cricket store or by calling 1-800-CRICKET (1-800-274-2538)and following the prompts. BridgePay setup is not offered online.

Note : You may be eligible for the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), a federal program that helps lower the cost of service for qualifying households.  Learn more and see if you qualify .

How does BridgePay work?

While getting seven extra days to pay your bill in full is a relief, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Auto Pay must be turned off to activate BridgePay. You can turn Auto Pay back on after the second payment is made in full.
  • You can't set up BridgePay if you have a new line that hasn't been activated yet.
  • Plan or feature changes scheduled to begin at the start of your next bill must be canceled.
  • If you chose a promotional offer that expires before your next billing cycle, the offer will no longer be available.
  • You can cancel BridgePay up until your original payment due date. If you cancel before your payment due date, your BridgePay fee will be applied to your account as a credit.
  • If you miss the second payment due date, you'll need to pay your total for the next month to restore your service.*
  • BridgePay can only be set up once per billing cycle.

How does account suspension affect BridgePay?

If you miss your original due date and your service is suspended, you can still set up BridgePay for up to seven days past your due date. What you need to know:

  • Setting up BridgePay within seven days of your missed payment due date will reactivate your phone lines and reset your bill cycle start date. Your new bill cycle starts the day you set up BridgePay and reactivate your line(s).
  • If you miss the second payment due date, you'll need to pay your total for the next billing month to restore your service.*

How do I make my second BridgePay payment?

You can make your second BridgePay payment via the  myCricket App , using  Quick Pay online , in a Cricket store, or by calling  1-800-274-2538  and using the voice prompts.

What fees are associated with BridgePay?

To use BridgePay, you'll need to pay a $5 activation fee for a single-line account or a $15 fee for a multi-line account, plus the minimum payment due for each line on your account. Only one BridgePay activation fee is charged per account per billing cycle.

BridgePay Example: Single-Line Accounts

How do you determine when your second bridgepay payment is due, example: if you make your first bridgepay payment  before  your due date:.

  • Your due date is May 4th. You make your first BridgePay payment on May 3rd.
  • Using May 5th as the first day of your new billing cycle, count forward seven days.
  • Your second payment is due by midnight Central Time on May 11th.

Example: If you make your first BridgePay payment after your due date***:

  • Your due by date is May 4th. You make your first BridgePay payment on May 6th.
  • Using May 6th as the first day of your new billing cycle, count forward seven days.
  • Your second payment is due by midnight Central Time on May 12th.

Ready to set up BridgePay? Visit a Cricket store or call 1-800-CRICKET (1-800-274-2538).

Moscow subway WiBOX antenna with Cisco MIMO 4x4 Access Points installation

One of our Customers faced the problem of increasing the real throughput in the communication in the Moscow subway. They needed connection between a moving train and stationary points in a tunnel, with NLOS conditions and roaming between APs in the tunnel. The system is based on the Cisco 5 GHz Access Points of Cisco Aironet 3600 Series AP units and WiBOX PA D4M5-20HVX MIMO 4x4 directional antennas. The installation has been done at the standard of 802.11n on MIMO 4x4 technology (exactly with 3SS + one stream for a beamforming).

One side of the link was located in the train (Pic. 1), the other point was placed in a stationary point in the subway tunnel (Pic. 2 and Pic. 3).

The goal was to get the maximum throughput between a moving point in the train and stationary points in the metro. In the tunnel there was a necessity to use the most directional antennas as it’s possible. The choice was WiBOX PA D4M5-20HVX MIMO 4x4 directional antenna.

It’s antenna based on the PTFE microstrip substrate, so it allows to minimize the antenna dimensions (4x4 antenna is housed in 29 x 48 [cm] enclosure),and gives stable parameters in a wide frequency range. As writen above Cisco Aironet 3600 offers 3 spatial streams + one connector for beamforming. In this case there is possibility to achieve theoretical max. throughput of 450Mbps. Single polarity applications cannot be used in this location because of many reflections from the tunel walls, here was necessary a good solution which Cisco brings to their customers. Cisco Engineers decides to use 40 MHz channels for this application, the MCS possible to use in given conditions was max 23 (max for 3SS). The distance for the test (between moving train and a point inside the subway) was max. 360m, the speed of moving train was 75 km/h (~47mph), what was additional disadvantage for the link and have influence for the final result. In that installation there were set up 3 Access Points on the train way, the distances between APs was 260m and 360m. The standard of 802.11n was designed for stationary points only, the test is some of an experimental 802.11n application, finally with unexpectable good result.

The maximum stable TCP transfer achieved was over 100Mbps, without a big changes (Pic.4).

As it’s seen from the Pic. 4 the TCP transfer is stable and the average level is over 100Mbps, what is very good result taking into consideration conditions where the test had a place. The train was moving with the speed of 75km/h (~ 47mph). Maximum theoretical throughput (for two stationary points) is 450 Mbps on the MCS23, see the article . MIMO 4x4 is the best solution (of 802.11n standard) for the places where is a lot of reflection obstacles. It carries 4 different spatial streams, so it requires antenna 4x4 to maximalize the streams separation. Strong multipath effect needs a good radio to take advantages of this fact (in SISO applications it would decrease signal). The main point is the separation between connectors in the antenna and in a result the highest possible level of separation between spatial streams to avoid big interferences. The antenna of WiBOX PA D4M5- 20HVX offers 32 dBi of port-to-port isolation. The antenna is predicted to work with MIMO 4x4 or with „lower” versions of MIMO technology. In CISCO Aironet 3600 we face with the MIMO 3x3 technology + one connector for the beamforming, what is the technology for improving the signal quality, not improoving the throughput. For this application there are also needed antennas 4x4.

Another interesting thing is the way to get the continuity and stability in the throughput in roam from one base station to the next one. It’s possible due to CCKM (Cisco Centralized Key Management) which allows for fast roaming. In described installation three WiBOXes PA D4M5-20HVX with Cisco Aironet 3600 were located in the tunel one next to another. As the train was moving, the conditions were changing, there was also situations when there was NLOS conditions, which shows the advantages of MIMO technology.

All the test results as well as the photos have been provided by Cisco Engineers from Moscow, we thank a lot for the common work.
