Hardys Voyage Shiraz Mourvedre 2020 review

co op

When you’ve got both Shiraz and Mourvedre in a red wine then there’s bound to huge amounts of spicy fruitiness, right? Wrong. This rather thin version by big Aussie brand Hardys is very much showing its low, low price point. There is cherry and milk chocolate flavours with a bit of burnt toast and cinnamon but it’s very light and forgettable. Supermarket own-brands are doing a better job at flavourful wines at the around £5 price.

Meet the WInemakers

The story begins.

The story of Hardys begins with the very man who gave us his name, Thomas Hardy. From the moment he arrived in Australia in 1850, his ingenuity, determination and hard work built a business that has lasted more than 160 years.

voyage by hardys

BORN ON THE FARM

Thomas Hardy was born in the small village of Gittisham, in Devon, England. He was one of generations of Hardys who lived and farmed in the Devon countryside.

voyage by hardys

OPPORTUNITY BECKONS

Thomas always could sense a great opportunity and he saw just that in the colonies, so, at the age of 20, with only £30 in his pocket, Thomas took ship to Australia on the ‘British Empire’.

voyage by hardys

LAND OF HIS OWN

After working hard in his first years in Adelaide, including with William Reynell, the first winemaker in South Australia, Thomas was finally able to buy land of his own on the banks of the River Torrens, aptly named ‘Bankside’, where Hardys Wines was born.

voyage by hardys

RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME

The Tintara Vineyards Company came up for sale just as Thomas was looking to expand. Established in 1861, and now bankrupt, this McLaren Vale winery had great potential. Thomas bought Tintara on the spot, sold all the wine and essentially got himself a new winery for nothing.

voyage by hardys

A FAMILY BUSINESS

By 1887, Thomas’ sons were all grown up and ready to start with the business, and so Hardys Wines became Thomas Hardy & Sons, welcoming sons James, Thomas Nathaniel and Robert to lead the business into the next century.

A New Century

“Generally regarded as the father of the wine industry in South Australia, he was a grand pioneer who came to Australia as a young man and by his unbounded energy built up business which is known in both hemispheres and which played an important part in winning for the central State such pre-eminence as the producer of wine.” The Register Newspaper at the time of Thomas Hardy’s death

voyage by hardys

UP IN FLAMES

By 1900, Thomas Hardy and Sons was the largest winemaker in South Australia, so when Thomas’ original winery at Bankside burnt to the ground in 1904, it could have been a devastating blow, but Thomas took it in his stride, moving on to his new larger site at Mile End.

voyage by hardys

DEATH OF A LEGEND

Two days shy of his 82nd birthday, Thomas passed away. From the young man who boarded the ship in 1850 with £30 to his name, to the father of the South Australian wine industry, his vision, perseverance and sheer hard work had built a company to last.

voyage by hardys

SURVIVING THE WAR

Thomas’ youngest son Robert took over the business just before WWI as his son Robert Cyril, and cousin Tom Mayfield both enlisted. Tragically Robert Cyril lost his life on the French battlefields, leaving only two third generation members to continue the business, including Robert’s son Ken.

voyage by hardys

LOSING A LEADER

Tragedy struck again in 1938 when Tom Mayfield Hardy was killed in the Kyeema plane crash, leaving behind widow Eileen and four young children. Eileen, a woman of immense character and fortitude, immediately stepped up, taking on a role with Hardys that would define the rest of her life.

voyage by hardys

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS

By the centenary, the Hardy family had a lot to celebrate, and that they did, with week-long celebrations stretching from McLaren Vale, through the Barossa, all the way to the Riverland.

voyage by hardys

FOUR GENERATIONS

By 1965, the fourth generation of the Hardy family was now on board, with Tom Mayfield’s eldest son Thomas Walter taking over the running of the company, and siblings David, Pam and Jim, as well as Ken’s son Bob.

International Success

“The Hardy wine empire is preparing to celebrate its 150th year since Thomas Hardy planted his first vineyard on the outskirts of Adelaide. More than 7.6 million cases of wine are now sold worldwide under the Hardy's brand each year that equates to a bottle being bought every four seconds… Old Thomas Hardy would be very proud of how far his company has reached.” ABC National Rural News, 2003

voyage by hardys

THE MATRIARCH RECEIVES HER DUES

Eileen’s four children decided to celebrate their mother’s 8oth Birthday with the best wine in the company, the first Eileen Hardy Shiraz. An accolade only briefly eclipsed by the Order of the British Empire she received from the Queen at Buckingham Palace in 1976.

voyage by hardys

TRAGEDY STRIKES AGAIN

As the 1980s dawned however, the Hardy family received a double blow, firstly with the loss of Eileen herself in April, then her eldest son Thomas Walter, who died of cancer in December of the same year. With the fifth generation only just joining the company, it was a difficult time.

voyage by hardys

CHATEAU REYNELLA

Before Thomas Walter passed, he put forward the idea of moving to Chateau Reynella, the site of Thomas Hardy's first job in 1850, not far from McLaren Vale. After purchasing the heritage site in 1982, Hardys put prodigious effort into restoring the beautiful building and grounds.

voyage by hardys

EXPLORING NEW REGIONS

Enjoying great success, Hardys Wines explored new regions in Australia, and abroad, including wineries in France and Italy. It was a costly time, so Hardys Wines went public. This led to the company leaving family hands and merging with Riverland based wine company Berri Renmano Ltd.

voyage by hardys

INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS

As Hardys celebrated its 150th anniversary, Hardys Wines was travelling to over 130 countries worldwide, with 2 million glasses of Hardys Wines drunk every single day. Hardys Wines was named the number one Australian wine brand, and the second most powerful wine brand globally.

voyage by hardys

OLD BECOMES NEW

It was time for the old cellars at Hardys Tintara to move into the modern age, embracing the very same principles Thomas Hardy himself used, Cellar 8 was renovated to become the most advanced open fermentation cellar in the southern hemisphere.

Meet the Hardys family

voyage by hardys

Thomas Hardy

The founder of Hardys Wines. By 1876 he purchased The Tintara Vineyard Company. By 1894, Thomas Hardy had become the largest winemaker in the colony, and the press labelled him ‘the father of the wine industry in South Australia’.

voyage by hardys

Thomas Hardy Nottage

Thomas Hardy Nottage was Thomas Hardy’s nephew, and he began working for his uncle at the age of 15 in 1884. He retired in 195 after working for Hardys Wines for 66 years. The company made a decision that his exceptional service should be recognised and one of the prime vineyards at Tintara was re-named ‘Nottage Hill’.

voyage by hardys

Eileen Hardy

Born in 1893, Eileen took on the role of brand ambassador for Hardys Wines in 1938 after her husband, Tom Mayfield Hardy, was tragically killed in the ‘Kyeema’ aircrash. She became so well-known by wine lovers that everyone called her ‘Auntie Eileen’. In 1977, her enormous contribution to the Australian wine industry was recognised when she was made an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE).

voyage by hardys

Sir James Hardy

James (Jim) Hardy is Tom and Eileen Hardy’s youngest child. Jim joined the company in its centenary year, 1953, and worked in a variety of roles before transferring to Sydney as director and manager for New South Wales. Jim is perhaps best known in Australia as a legendary yachtsman. He has sailed successfully in Admiral’s Cups, America’s Cups and Olympic Games, and he was awarded an OBE and knighted for his services to yachting and the community. In Jim’s honour, Hardys Wines released the Sir James sparkling wine range in the late 1980s.

voyage by hardys

William (Bill) Hardy, son of Thomas and Barbara Hardy. Bill’s father advised him to head to France in 1972 to study for the French winemaking degree at the Universite de Bordeaux. Bill’s winemaking career spanned 23 years, making wine in South Australia, Western Australia and France. Bill then became Hardys Brand Ambassador, spending two decades travelling Australia and the world, ensuring the wine world was left in no doubt about the unique heritage, unrivalled product portfolio and outstanding quality of Hardys wines.

Artist - HARDY 3

The Best HARDY Songs

By Alison Bonaguro

Link copied

Content Sponsor

HARDY has built a name for himself in country music by painting pictures of a simple life, from his Mississippi raisin’ to his affinity for all things country.

When he released his debut song ‘Rednecker’ in 2019, it was unmistakable how his way with words would become the stamp on his music, nuanced by the unapologetic way he sees the world.

Here is Holler’s list of the Best HARDY Songs:

UNAPOLOGETICALLY COUNTRY AS HELL

He’s got buck blood on his Sunday clothes, lets moonshine get the best of him, has directions to a honey hole, spoon scales his perch, dips in church and has a freezer full of good aim.

That should be enough to help you get to know how Hardy does life. The a cappella first verse highlights the purity of the lyrics before the instrumentation comes in and backs the rest of the song with swagger and conviction.

This is HARDY’s wish: that we could all go back in time, to whatever year you consider old school. For him, it’s when the moonwalk, Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer and bucket seats in a Skylark were commonplace.

He’s even thrown some 90s country references in this nostalgic romp, citing both ‘Don't Rock the Jukebox’ (Alan Jackson) and ‘Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident)’ ( John Michael Montgomery ) as the throwback tunes that take him back in time.

As far as we know, this might be the first country song to ever personify emotions. So it hits different than other songs about hate, bitterness, cruelty, jealousy, love, anger and all the others.

In HARDY’s opinion, Happy is the friend you have to let in. And just so you know, if you abuse him for the night, he don’t show for a while. The bottom line is, “Hey, Happy, why can’t everybody just be you?”

Good question, right?

Signed, Sober You

This honest, modern ballad is all about the hardships of falling out of love; all those incessant temptations to call her, scroll through her Instagram and fantasize about kissing her.

But in this letter to Drunk You from Sober You, you’re reminded that there’s healing in the lonely. That’s sage advice to any man (or woman) who has been the one to carry a torch long after you should have.

THIS OLE BOY

Turn this one up loud to hear to the unofficial autobiography of HARDY. As in, he don't come from the city, he got some rock 'n' roll roots, he still speaks Mississippi and he’s got some miles on his boots.

Since this song pre-dates his record deal, it wasn’t a big radio hit, but it still does a very thorough job of explaining what will and won’t change now that he’s fallen in love.

This was the world’s first introduction to HARDY when it was released in 2018. It’s about how he’s got a little more kick in his drawl, a little more spit in his chaw and a floorboard full of Slim Jims.

It was the perfect debut song, because it immediately showed off what HARDY is so good at. Checking all the boxes of his country lifestyle and using a comparative adjective to describe it perfectly.

(You can’t help but wonder how the song would’ve sounded had HARDY used the superlative, making him the redneckist.)

HATE YOUR HOMETOWN

The break-up song by which all the other break-up songs should be measured.

She’s left him to go back to her hometown that she loves, and he hopes it turns out to be her worst nightmare - that the streets have been renamed, the bars have shut down and memory lane has disappeared.

The song showcases a pissed-off HARDY, telling her exactly how he feels about her decision even though he doesn’t mean to be mean. But ultimately, it’s all because he wants her to turn around and come back to him.

GIVE HEAVEN SOME HELL

Prepare to get choked up for a good three minutes within the first few seconds.

A tragic death of a young man brings his friends to church to say their goodbyes, and to tell him exactly what to do when he gets to the other side. Make some thunder, make 'em wonder how you got in, hide your beer and your clear from the man upstairs, crank it loud and hold it down 'til they get there.

Just picturing a group of young men in suits and ties at a funeral is enough to move even the hardest of hearts, especially with the admonishment that “Man it ain't right / But if you gotta be there, give heaven some hell.”

drink one for me

This song could easily be the sequel to ‘GIVE HEAVEN SOME HELL’. Because again, HARDY has made the star of the song a man who’s passed tragically young. And his message to the folks he left behind? Drink one for him.

“Drink one for me / Just know I’d be there holding one in the air / If I didn’t have somewhere to be” and “I begged Jesus when I got here to send me back for just one night / ‘cause I didn’t know that last beer was the last beer of my life.”

An upbeat, catchy love song about a truck? HARDY’s the man for the job. But even beyond that, the song is about the way a pick-up truck symbolizes everything about a man’s truck.

From the songs on his radio to the 12-pack in the passenger seat, the truck becomes more than a mode of transportation. To HARDY, it’s how you can tell that even though you can't judge a book by its cover, you can judge a country boy by his truck.

One Beer (feat. Lauren Alaina)

This song was HARDY’s first No. 1 song, about an unintentional pregnancy.

In the same way that Eric Church painted a picture of a teen-dad scare in his ‘Two Pink Lines’, HARDY creates a similar vignette about being 17 in a small town with weak knees in a CVS, questioning what's gonna be waitin' on that test?

The moral of the story is that the whole thing started with some alcohol and a love-drunk kiss, but now when he looks at his son and daughter, he knows that the world don’t spin without ‘em.

Alaina’s voice lends the song the woman’s perspective of that unexpected life change after a one-night stand.

red (feat. Morgan Wallen)

There’s an immediate halo effect of having Morgan Wallen’s name on a song, and it’s taking the color red to new heights.

It’s not just the red from the American flag, it’s the color of her lips, courthouse bricks, barn doors, bloodhounds and a country boy’s neck. At the end of the day, we all bleed red.

The collaboration is so seamless that it’s hard to determine where HARDY’s voice ends and Wallen’s begins.

Nothin' Out Here (feat. Thomas Rhett)

Collaborative in the most genuine way, because this one invites a like-minded artist to share how their rural life is the only way of life.

They can turn that dirt into what’s on the table, they wake up with the sun and they keep their dust-covered, rusted trucks running. So no matter who sees “nothin’ out there,” they’ll know that there are a lot of people proud to be middle-of-nowhere folks makin' somethin' outta nothin'.

All of us are surrounded with too many screens - TVs, laptops, smart phones, even wristwatches - but when you hear this song, one rises quickly to the top: the treasured back porch screen.

That’s your view of the things you can see with your own eyes, like a sunset, a sunrise or a storm. Because, as HARDY illuminates, those batteries might run out but your memory will never die.

wait in the truck (feat. Lainey Wilson)

You can take this song one of two ways: a noble knight in shining armor rescues a damsel in distress. Or a complete stranger goes to jail for killing a woman’s abuser.

Either way, it is a powerful story delivered in just four minutes: he sees a battered woman, he goes to her ex’s double wide, shoots him with a Judge - a Taurus .45 Colt revolver - he has in his truck, and then willingly goes to jaiI.

It is a classic example of true story songs that have a beginning, a middle and an end. And even better, this song isn’t just about that one time he did that thing, it’s about the measure of a man.

  7. Hardys Voyage Shiraz Mourvedre 2020 review

Hardys Voyage Shiraz Mourvedre 2020 review. When you've got both Shiraz and Mourvedre in a red wine then there's bound to huge amounts of spicy fruitiness, right? Wrong.
