1) Overview & Things to Know

When it comes to glaciers in Patagonia (and the world), the Perito Moreno Glacier is on top of many people’s minds. The glacier is located 75 km / 45 miles from the lakeside town of El Calafate, and there are several ways to go about a visit.

The main 4 options when it comes to Perito Moreno include:

  • Glacier Trekking
  • Walking the Boardwalks
  • Boat Cruise

Kayaking Tour

This guide will go through each one of these options and talk through some of the top Perito Moreno tours along the way.

To get started though, below are some interesting facts about the glacier to gain a better understanding of what it is all about.

Name : The glacier is named after the Argentinian explorer – Francisco Moreno , who explored the region in the 1800s. The word “perito” translates to expert, so he became better known as Perito Moreno over the years.

Size : Perito Moreno Glacier is quite a large glacier. It comes in around 100 square miles / 250 square km in area . From one end to the other, it is about 19 miles / 30 km in length, and 3 miles / 5 km in width.

Growth : While many glaciers around the world are shrinking, Perito Moreno is actually growing in size . This is certainly on the rarer side and it is what keeps Perito Moreno a highly visited natural attraction year after year.

Rupture : A phenomenon that happens every several years is called a rupture . This is when the glacier reaches the shore of the lake (Lago Argentino) and creates an ice dam between Canal de Los Tempanos & Brazo Rico. Eventually the pressure created by the water will cause a huge rupture in the glacier as large chunks of ice continuously fall off. The cycle then repeats itself over the course of the next several years.

Ice Fields : The glacier is also one of 48 glaciers that jut out of the Southern Patagonian Ice Fields . The Ice Fields are one of the largest contiguous pieces of ice in the entire world. If you want to view the Ice Fields, head to the Huemul Circuit in El Chalten for a once in a lifetime trekking experience.

2) Independent vs Tours

Before jumping into the various tour options, you may also be asking yourself if you can visit the Perito Moreno Glacier on your own.

In general, the only way to visit Perito Moreno without a tour is if you are simply going about a walk along the boardwalks overlooking the glacier. This is surely a top way to experience the glacier as you get to view Perito Moreno from all different angles along the shoreline.

However, if you are looking for a more in depth and unique experience, then taking part of a Perito Moreno tour is the only way to go about it. These include glacier hikes, boat cruises, kayaks, and even guided tours of the boardwalks.

Depending on what you are most interested in will dictate whether or not a Perito Moreno tour is best for you.

Note: if going to the boardwalks independently you can also sign up for the 1 hour boat cruise on arrival .

Now, let’s talk through all the various Perito Moreno tour options to consider as you plan your trip.

3) Glacier Hike: Minitrekking & Big Ice

One way to experience the Perito Moreno Glacier is to actually hike on the glacier itself. Now, you can’t just walk up and go about a glacier trek on your own though.

Instead, there is one company called Hielo y Aventura that runs two different types of glacier hikes for visitors. These glacier tours are called Minitrekking & Big Ice.

The main difference between the two is how long you spend on the ice (1 hour vs 3 hours) and how far into the glacier you will be hiking. Below is a quick breakdown of the two hikes.

Learn More : Check out the Perito Moreno Minitrekking overview and Perito Moreno Big Ice overview to learn more about each one

Perito Moreno Minitrekking

While you will just spend 1 hour on the ice as part of a Perito Moreno Glacier Minitrekking experience, this will still be a full day activity.

The day will start with an early drive from El Calafate to Perito Moreno . From there, you will hop on a short 20 minute boat ride to the Hielo y Aventura glacier lodge.

At the lodge, you will be given some equipment, walked through some safety tips, and be broken down into smaller groups.

From the lodge, you will make a short hike along the shoreline to the glacier itself. Here you will be fitted with crampons before getting yourself onto the glacier.

The next hour will be spent enjoying the glacier ice as you continue along a short route on Perito Moreno.

After completing the hike and returning to the lodge, you will head back across the water by boat and be driven to the main Perito Moreno parking lot.

Here you will have an additional hour to walk along the boardwalks of Perito Moreno . This portion of the day will be unguided as you make your way across the various walkways before returning to the parking lot.

From there, it is back to El Calafate to end a fun and exhilarating day out on the ice.

Perito Moreno Glacier Minitrekking

Perito Moreno Big Ice

Now, if an hour is not enough for you, the Big Ice tour will take you on the glacier for 3 hours instead of 1 hour.

The day will look somewhat similar altogether. After leaving El Calafate, you will first be driven out to the main Perito Moreno parking lot. Here you will have an hour to walk the boardwalks and enjoy the views from the mainland .

After an hour of exploring, it is back on the bus and onto the port, where you will hop on a boat to the Hielo y Aventura lodge. Similarly, you will grab equipment and be broken down into smaller groups before continuing along with the day.

Here is where things are a bit different. The Big Ice trek does not happen in the same spot as Minitrekking. Instead, Big Ice takes you much further along on the glacier, where the glacial landscape is much more diverse.

It is about a 1-1.5 hour hike along the side of the glacier until you reach the point to put on crampons. So, the Big Ice is really a combination of hiking off of the ice and on the ice.

After getting fitted for crampons, the next 3 hours will be full of exploring Perito Moreno Glacier. Glacial rivers, ice caves, small lakes, and more will be viewed throughout a day out on the ice.

Once the time on the ice is complete, you will hike back to the lodge, hop on the boat, and onto the bus to El Calafate.

4) Boat Tour

Another way to go about your time at Perito Moreno, is to take part of an organized boat tour along the water in front of the glacier. The boat tours usually run for about 1 hour and are frequent throughout the day.

These boat tours head out on the northern arm of Lago Argentino around Canal de los Tempanos as you get to experience the glacier from the water.

If you would like to take part of a Perito Moreno Glacier boat tour, there are two ways to go about it. You can either sign up with a full day tour that takes you to the boardwalks & on the boat, or you can go independently to Perito Moreno and sign up for a boat tour on the spot.

So, in essence a Perito Moreno Glacier boat tour takes care of all logistics for you throughout the day. This will include all transport and it gives you time to explore the boardwalks (2-3 hours) + head on the boat cruise (1 hour)

Similarly to other tours, your day will start with a bus ride from El Calafate to Perito Moreno. You then will have 2 or so hours to explore the boardwalks at your own pace. Having a couple of hours here is plenty of time to walk all throughout the boardwalks.

After visiting the boardwalks, you will be taken to the boat dock, where you will hop on an hour long boat tour of the northern side of the glacier. Once all done with the boat ride, you will be driven by to El Calafate to end your day.

You can also choose this as a private tour option  if looking for a more customized experience

As mentioned, another option is to actually do this independently if you have your own transport. You can simply show up to the boat dock, buy a ticket onsite, and hop on the boat tour. However, the tour mentioned above takes care of all logistics for you from beginning to end.

5) Boardwalks Tour

The Perito Moreno boardwalks offer 5 different walkways that make up over 4 km / 2.5 miles in length. These boardwalks take you to various viewpoints overlooking Perito Moreno Glacier and the surrounding landscape.

When it comes to taking a boardwalks tour, you can essentially sign up for the same boat tour mentioned above.

That is because the tour offers the boardwalks for the first portion of the day, and then you can decide whether or not you actually want add on the boat tour.

As you book the boardwalks tour, you will come across the option to add on the boat tour.

Either way though, the boardwalks will be included in any standard tour.

If you do not want to book a tour, you can still visit the boardwalks by car, taxi or bus.

6) Kayaking Tour

Another way of going about a visit to Perito Moreno is taking part of a kayaking tour . Kayaking the waters of Lago Aregentino is surely going to be a unique and exhilarating activity to take part of.

A kayaking tour gives you the chance to view the glacier from a whole new angle as you make your way along the northern part of Perito Moreno.

Similarly to other tours, the day will start out with a pickup in El Calafate followed by a bus ride to the kayak launch point.

Once you arrive, you will need to change into some very warm gear including a Gore-tex suit, thermal suit, boots, gloves and a life jacket.

What is also great about this Perito Moreno kayaking tour is that it welcomes all levels of experience.

So even if you are a first time kayaker, this tour can still be for you. And there is no better way to be introduced to kayaking than in front of Perito Moreno glacier.

The kayaking portion of the day will last approximately 90 minutes before you head back to dry land and change out of your gear.

Before or after your kayaking experience, you will also get to a chance to walk the boardwalks. So, don’t worry about not seeing the views of the glacier from land during the kayaking tour.

7) Glacier Cruise Tours

While the boat tour mentioned above just focuses in on the area around Perito Moreno Glacier, there is also the opportunity to take part of longer boat tours.

These boat tours not only visit Perito Moreno, but also other glaciers within the Los Glaciares National Park. So, overall the focus of these tours will be less so on Perito Moreno itself but more so on the overall glacier landscape of the area.

In addition, expect to spend a much longer time out on the water. Instead of the 1 hour cruises around Perito Moreno, you will be spending several hours all along the waterways of Lago Argentino. There are two tours I will mention here – one just a boat ride & the other including the boardwalks.

Glaciers Gourmet Experience

The highlights of the Glaciers Gourmet Experience include:

  • Escuadra Bay
  • Condor Nesting Wall
  • Seco, Heim and Spegazzini Glaciers
  • Upsala Canal
  • Upsala and Bertracchi Glacier
  • Perito Moreno Glacier

So, this option heads to many glaciers including the Perito Moreno Glacier at the end of the tour before returning to port.

Los Glaciares National Park Boat Tour

Gourmet Glacier Cruise & Footbridges

This is a similar tour to above, however this will also include the boardwalks of Perito Moreno. While the exact route may differ a bit, it does give you the chance to include the walkways at the end of the day.

So, if you want to combine a longer glacier boat tour experience with the walkways of Perito Moreno, then this is the perfect option for you.

8) Perito Moreno Tours Recap

I hope by now you have a better understanding of all the various Perito Moreno tour offerings. To recap though, here are the main tours to choose from when going about your time in El Calafate.

Glacier Hikes

There are two glacier hike options that take you onto the ice itself. Minitrekking gives you an hour on the ice and Big Ice gives you three hours.

  • Perito Moreno Glacier Minitrekking
  • Perito Moreno Glacier Big Ice

The main tour offering includes a 2 hour boardwalk walkway experience with an 1 hour boat tour add on.

  • Perito Moreno Glacier Boat Tour
  • Perito Moreno Glacier Boat Tour Private

Walkways Tour

This will go through the same booking link as above. When going about your booking you can choose to exclude the boat tour add on option.

If you want to kayak the waters, you can book a 1.5 kayaking tour that also takes you to the boardwalks.

  • Perito Moreno Kayaking Tour

Glacier Cruises

Lastly, you have longer glacier cruise options that take you throughout the Los Glaciares National Park. The first option just gives you the chance to see Perito Moreno from the boat while the second also includes walking the boardwalks.

  • Glaciers Gourmet Experience (boat only)
  • Gourmet Glacier Cruise & Footbridges (boat + boardwalks)

Hielo & Aventura

9) Best Time to Visit

Patagonia is in the southern hemisphere, meaning that its summer runs from December to March. During this period you can expect to have longer days, calmer weather, and the chance for a better overall experience.

Visiting in the shoulder months of October, November & March, April are not bad choices either. You will have fewer tourists around and will still have the chance for some optimal weather days.

When it comes to Perito Moreno tours, many of these will sell out during those peak time periods. So, once you know your dates, I would recommend putting some bookings down just to guarantee you a spot.

With that said though, the weather in Patagonia can be very unpredictable. One day can be nice and sunny while the next may bring some snow (even in the summer months).

If you book a tour and see a very poor weather condition day, try to see if there is any flexibility with moving around your schedule.

Seeing Perito Moreno is surely going to be a highlight during your trip, so I would recommend doing what you can to visit in the best weather possible.

Glacier Hike Patagonia

10) Los Glaciares Entrance Fee

While tours will charge you money for taking part of a particular activity, the entrance fee for Los Glaciares National Park is usually not included.

Los Glaciares National Park is the protected landscape outside of El Calafate that includes Perito Moreno in addition to many other glaciers in the region. Due to it being a National Park, there are particular hours and an entrance fee to consider.

Expect a one day entrance fee to be around $25-$30 USD. You can also opt for a two day pass which will give you 50% off on the second day of a visit. The use of the 2 nd day can be made up to 72 hours after the first entry.

These entrance tickets can be bought ahead of time, or you can pay at the National Park entrance in cash. The entrance to the park is approximately 30 minutes prior to reaching the Perito Moreno Glacier parking lot.

11) Patagonia Packing List

Patagonia is all about layers and proper footwear. Since the weather can turn very quickly, you will want to be prepared for all types of conditions.

In general, I found layering to be the upmost important part of a trip. On all days in Patagonia, I brought along the following layers:

  • Hiking Shorts
  • Hiking Pants
  • Short Sleeve Shirt
  • Long Sleeve Shirt / Sun Hoodie
  • Mid Layer Fleece
  • Puff Jacket
  • Packable Rain Jacket

While layers are important so will be your footwear. You want to be sure to bring appropriate waterproof hiking shoes along with solid hiking socks as well.

Additional day hike recommendations include:

  • Hiking Backpack & Rain cover
  • Water Bottle & Nutrition
  • Portable Charger
  • Hat & Sunglasses
  • Sunscreen & Bug Spray

Be sure to check out the Hiking Packing List guide I put together that will go through all of it and more.

12) Where to Stay in El Calafate

El Calafate is a beautiful Patagonian town built to cater for tourists, who fly from all over the world to visit Perito Moreno. You will find hotels within walking distance to town center and also some that are further out from town. If taking part of a tour, most of them do pick people up directly from hotels.

Below you can find some highly rated and reviewed hotel options to choose from during your trip to El Calafate. During high season, top options can sell out.

I would recommend booking your accommodation as soon as you know your dates:

  • Mirador del Lago Hotel
  • Calafate Parque Hotel
  • Lagos Del Calafate
  • Xelena Hotel & Suites (luxury)
  • Calafate Hostel (budget)

Thursday 29th of December 2022

We are a luxury concierge service, and one of our VIP clients is looking to visit Petito Moreno Glacier by boat (preferably a Private Tour if one can be organised, if not, a group booking will suffice if the timing adds up.)

They will arrive on the 30th Dec at 3pm (El Calafate), and are due to leave early on Dec 31st. For this reason, we believe it might be a good idea to organise a Private Tour to accommodate their restricted times - would this be possible ? If so, can you urgently provide us with the information required so that we may speak with our client to finalise this.

Many thanks, Andrea

Hi Andrea - I would recommend checking out this private tour that brings clients to the boardwalks (with an optional boat add on) -> Perito Moreno Glacier Boat Tour Private

I do not think that the boat tour would be private, but the rest should be. You can connect with the provider once booked. Thanks!

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Perito Moreno Glacier (2024)

Everything you need to know about visiting Perito Moreno Glacier in El Calafate, Argentina. From prices, where to stay, things to do in Perito Moreno and an independent travellers’ guide, we’ll help you make the most of your trip.

Perito Moreno Glacier

“Perito Moreno Glacier? Yea, it’s expensive, but so worth it!”

The backpacker in Puerto Natales was pretty convincing when we asked them what they thought of Patagonia’s most famous glacier.

As it turns out their quote perfectly summed up our own experience with visiting one of Argentina’s most popular tourist attractions, the sprawling frozen river close to El Calafate.

We had already visited quite a number of glaciers in the region, having just completed an awesome cruise through the Chilean Fjords and trekking the O Circuit in Torres del Paine National Park.

So we were contemplating skipping the world-famous Perito Moreno Glacier to head straight out and see El Chalten and Fitz Roy.

We’re glad we didn’t.

After taking the bus from Puerto Natales we crossed the border back into Argentina and got dropped off at the bus station in El Calafate.

Youtube Player

Not being in a rush we had given ourselves 4 nights in town, which gave us ample opportunity to catch the perfect weather to head out to Los Glaciares National Park, home to Glaciar Perito Moreno.

Trekking uphill to our first accommodation, La Cantera (read more about where to stay in El Calafate at the bottom of this article), we dropped our bags off and went to check out the town.

El Calafate is a funky, small town, right on Lago Argentino, the largest freshwater lake in the country. It has a leafy, ski-resort kind of feel about it and we instantly liked it, despite the ‘touristy’ feel.

Checking the weather we found out that the next day was going to be sunny. Being in Patagonia we knew to never trust weather forecasts, but rather than waiting a few days we decided to head straight out in the morning to the famous Perito Moreno Glacier.

Perito Moreno Glacier El Calafate

Waking up around 7am we had breakfast, packed a bag with some snacks and wine, and headed down to the bus station.

We made it just in time to get the 8:30am bus to the national park and settled in for the ride. At 570 ARS (US$32.50) each*, it was an expensive bus ticket for a short journey.

With only one quick stop to pay our entrance fee on the way (another 450 ARS, or US$29.50*) we made it in about 90 minutes.

As we got closer to the end of the road we got our first view of the impressive glacier, tumbling into the lake on the left side of the bus.

*Note – Prices in 2022 are now 800 ARS (US$20) return for the bus tickets and 700 ARS (US$17.50) for the park entrance fee.

Once we disembarked Alesha and I had two choices for what to do with our day – go on one of the boat tours, or simply walk around the park and take our time. We chose the latter option to keep our budget down.

Being one of the most popular national parks in Argentina, everything is signposted and it’s impossible to get lost. We found the boardwalk and started our hike.

Don’t miss our new ultimate guide to budget  travel in Patagonia!

Boardwalk Perito Moreno Glacier El Calafate

The sun was beaming down hard and there were few clouds in the sky. Ahead of us, the glacier shined brightly against the turquoise lake and distant peaks.

Rounding a bend in the boardwalk we got our first up-close view of this sprawling wonder.

The Perito Moreno Glacier is over 30km in length and 5km wide at the face. The day was still young, and already we knew we’d made the right decision coming out there.

Stopping for countless photos along the way we found some beautiful vantage points to admire the lines and shapes of the majestic frozen river.

The face reached heights of 70m above the lake, making its size truly remarkable.

What makes Perito Moreno one of the most interesting glaciers in South America is how active it is.

Immense ice chunks constantly crack off the face, known as ‘calving’, sending huge waves across the lake.

Calving Perito Moreno Glacier El Calafate

Every 20 minutes or so another piece of ice would fall , causing everyone fortunate enough to witness this natural phenomenon to cheer out in unison.

We kept walking along the boardwalk and found a large platform to set ourselves up for lunch.

Cracking a delicious bottle of Malbec we enjoyed cheese and crackers with the bottle of wine, and sat there in silence observing the glacier.

While we were having lunch we started to see small bits of ice fall from one particular crack.

Sensing that something big was about to happen we set our cameras up and waited.

Sure enough a gigantic slice the entire height of the face calved off right in front of us!

The impact was massive and water crashed out dozens of metres. The sound was overwhelming, and we couldn’t believe how lucky we were to see such a large piece calve.

Waves Perito Moreno Glacier El Calafate

Many outlets report that the Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the few in Patagonia that is advancing rather than retreating.

While it’s true that the length of it is growing, it is actually thinning at the same time. This means sadly that its volume is on a downward trend as well.

With the wine finished we continued walking to the end of the boardwalk, constantly in awe of the glacier’s size.

We ended up in a tranquil forest, adding a different element to the easy hike.

The hours passed by quickly, and soon it was time for us to return to the bus.

Surprisingly the glacier’s activity slowed down, and the entire walk back didn’t have any more sizeable pieces of ice fall despite the afternoon heat. We’re glad we made it out there when we did!

We got back to the bus just in time and kicked back for the 90-minute ride to El Calafate.

Walking Perito Moreno Glacier El Calafate

Over the next few days we relaxed in town, spending a fair bit of time at Cerveceria El Zorro , drinking boutique beer and reflecting on the beauty of the small section of Los Glaciares National Park we had seen.

Visiting Perito Moreno Glacier was more impressive than we could have ever imagined.

Despite the high price associated with seeing it, we were blown away with its magnificence.

It’s not very often you can see one of the most fascinating attractions in nature up close and personal.

And with the way climate change is affecting the globe, who knows how much longer these glaciers will still be around.

The backpacker we met was right – it was worth every peso!

Where is the Perito Moreno Glacier

How to get there by bus, hitchhiking to the glacier, boat tours of the perito moreno glacier, trekking tours on the glacier, design suites el calafate, boutique hotel la cantera, save this pin for later, perito moreno glacier travel guide.

To help you plan your own visit here, we’ve put together a list of the important information you’ll need to know.

The Perito Moreno Glacier is about 80km from the town of El Calafate in Argentine Patagonia.

Not to be confused with the town by the same name (about 12 hours further north), the Perito Moreno Glacier is part of the Los Glaciares National Park .

To give context to the location, the Perito Moreno Glacier is actually part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.

This sprawling landscape feeds dozens of glaciers in southern Chile and Argentina, including the Grey and Dickson glaciers next to Torres del Paine National Park, and all of the glaciers you encounter on a cruise of the Chilean Fjords.

How to Get to Perito Moreno Glacier from El Calafate

To get to Perito Moreno Glacier you first have to travel to El Calafate in the Santa Cruz province in Argentina.

El Calafate has an airport, connected to a few regional towns in Argentina, but the main connections there come from Buenos Aires , Bariloche and Ushuaia .

You can also travel to El Calafate by bus from Puerto Natales (an easy 6-hour journey), from El Chalten (only 3 hours), or a mammoth leg from San Carlos de Bariloche (24 gruelling hours….we did it…).

Once you’re in El Calafate getting to the Perito Moreno Glacier is quite easy. You can either book a tour including transport, rent a car or a taxi, or do what we did and take the local bus.

  • First head to the main bus terminal in El Calafate Address:  Jean Mermoz 104 ( map here ).
  • Buy your bus ticket for ‘Glaciar Perito Moreno’. There are a few bus companies that go to the glacier, but we went with CalTur. The price for this ticket is a hefty 800 ARS (US$20) return.
  • The buses leave at either 08:30 or 09:00, depending on the company. It is totally possible to buy your bus tickets on the day of your trip. Just make sure you get to the bus station with 20 minutes to spare.
  • The trip to takes about 90 minutes. About 1 hour into the ride the bus will stop at the entrance to the Los Glaciares National Park. Here park rangers will come onto the bus and take your money for the entrance ticket. Cost : 700 ARS (US$17.50) per person ( MUST BRING CASH, they don’t accept credit card )
  • Eventually the bus arrives at the end of the road. Here you get out and can either go for a hike or book your boat tickets. You’ve made it to the glacier!
  • Buses return at 16:00 in the afternoon. Simply go back to the spot the bus dropped you off at. We suggest taking a photo of the number plate so you know which bus was yours, but it’s pretty straight forward. Don’t lose your ticket!
  • CalTur also have a bus that goes out at 13:00 and returns at 19:30, for those who want to be out there in the afternoon or have late connections.

Hike Perito Moreno Glacier El Calafate

It is completely possible to hitchhike to the glacier. The road that heads out there doesn’t have many other destinations along it, so most traffic will be heading to Perito Moreno.

Get yourself a bit out of town and make it to Ruta Provincial 11.  From here you shouldn’t have a problem finding a ride.

Returning to El Calafate should be just as easy, but we recommend doing what our friend did and ask the person if they can take you back as well (if they are heading back).

Tour vs Going Independently

It’s quite common for people to jump on a Perito Moreno Glacier tour to get out and see this marvellous natural wonder, but we think it’s better to go on your own *unless* you want to walk on the glacier itself.

Tour companies will charge you a little bit more for private transport to get out there but you will still have to buy your entrance ticket.

Some of them, but not many, have lunch included though.

On the bright side you get a guide, however in our opinion this is unnecessary for the standard boardwalk that you do, as there are plenty of information signs along the whole way talking about what glaciers are and the history of Perito Moreno.

You’ll also be shuttled around in a group, meaning you can’t take your time in the places you want to.

Instead we recommend saving the extra money and just bringing your own lunch with you (and a bottle of wine, of course).

Wine Perito Moreno Glacier El Calafate

Once you get to Perito Moreno Glacier you can book a boat tour right there and then, so there’s no need to prebook this in El Calafate.

When you arrive in the national park there will be a small booth with a sign saying ‘Navegacion’. Simply enquire there about boat tours and they can put you on one.

If you want to get closer to the glacier than from the boardwalk this is the next best option without going on a hiking tour.

These will get you up to 100m away from the face of Glaciar Perito Moreno and give you a spectacular perspective from the water’s level.

Most of these tours also include snacks and a glass of whiskey served with glacial ice and last for around 90 minutes or so. Confirm this when you book your tour.

Boat Tour

One of the best things you can do in El Calafate is go on a trekking tour of the Perito Moreno Glacier! If you’re after an adventure, be sure not to miss this.

Teaming up in small groups you leave town and head to the national park in private transport.

Then you jump on a boat and cross the lake to get to the side of the glacier.

Now comes the best part – you will be given crampons and ice axes and be taken on a guided trek directly on the glacier itself! If you’ve never been on a glacier before trust us – it’s something you’ll never forget!

Walking on one of Argentina’s biggest tourist attractions is truly sensational.

You can book short hike Perito Moreno Glacier tours ( known as ‘Mini Trekking’ ) or the larger ‘Big Ice’ which lasts for a few hours more and can even go inside ice caves depending on the time of year.

As to be expected, especially in Argentina/Patagonia, these tours aren’t cheap.

The Big Ice trek is 4000 ARS (USD$275) including transport, and the Mini Trekking is 2400 ARS (USD$156).

Neither of these include the park entry fee or lunch.

Still, it might just be your only chance to trek on an enormous glacier! We didn’t personally do it (we’ve trekked on quite a few glaciers before), but you can pre-book your tour.

Where to Stay in El Calafate

El Calafate is one of the more expensive places for accommodation in Argentina due to its remote location and popularity.

But being expensive also means it has very high quality hotels!

If you’re looking for a good, budget place to stay in El Calafate, then the absolute best option is the America del Sur Hostel .

Located only 7 minutes walk from downtown, this hostel is designed like a beautiful timber cabin and has panoramic views of the mountains and lake.

If you want something a bit cheaper than check out the other options on Hostelworld . Make sure you book ahead in the high season (December to April).

For the absolute best luxury hotel in El Calafate , you can’t beat the incredible (and aptly named) Design Suites !

A short 10-minute drive from downtown with a to-die-for view over the lake and surrounding mountains, Design Suites has the highest quality hotel rooms with the funkiest style in town.

From the moment you walk in you are welcomed with the huge windows letting in light and vistas from all angles.

There is a large dining area with a bar attached, and a cool sitting room to the side.

This is also where the delicious buffet breakfast is served in the mornings.

Best Luxury Hotel In El Calafate Design Suites View

There’s an interesting collection of art scattered throughout the hotel as well, giving it a gallery feel, with most of the pieces available for purchase.

You’ll find an indoor-heated pool, sauna and spa as well downstairs, ensuring Design Suites has all the amenities you could ever want to make your stay enjoyable.

The rooms are bright and spacious, with large, comfortable beds and window-side sitting areas with glorious views.

When you’re finished exploring the best that El Calafate has to offer, coming back here at the end of the night is superb.

Design Suites also offer a free shuttle into town, but this only happens twice a day which is a shame, meaning if you want to go at any other time you need to call a taxi (around 5000 Pesos each way).

Best Luxury Hotel In El Calafate Design Suites Bedroom

We also were lucky enough to spend 2 nights at Boutique Hotel La Cantera . While it’s not quite as luxurious as Design Suites, it does offer a very homely feel and a better location for those who want to be closer to downtown.

The common area is more like a large living room complete with a fireplace and comfy couches. It’s a perfect place to kick back with a book (or in our case our laptops to catch up with work).

The bedroom we booked was tucked away at the back of the hotel, and while it was large and had some interesting decorations, it did feel a bit dated, particularly the bathroom. It also didn’t have a lot of light coming in.

That being said, they do have bedrooms that seem much nicer and more modern facing the lake. If you stay here definitely try to book one of these.

Awesome post guys! thank you so much!

No worries at all. Happy to help. 🙂

Your page is very interesting, i have bookmarked it.

Thank you so much. Glad you like it. Take care

As you did, I will spend 4 nights in El Calafate on the beginning of December. I was puzzled to think either rent a car or take bus to Glaciers Park. After reading your article I decide to take bus because your experiences sound easy to ride on bus. But I would like to spend more time to sit or stand there just watching the beautiful glaciers, can I buy 8:30 am and return on 7:30 pm bus tickets if you know that? Many thanks for your reply.

Hope you had a great trip and it all worked out. With time for the bus, it is best to contact the bus companies. Happy travels

Hi Alesha and Jarryd,

Just to let you know that at the beginning of your article you talk about a “570000 ARS (US$32.50)” return bus ticket and a “450 ARS, or US$29.50 entry fee.” Later in the article in the ‘how to get to’ section you mention “800 ARS (US$20) return” bus tickets and a “700 ARS (US$17.50)” entry fee, obviously from the feedback in other comments. I was there in Feb this year and confirm those prices are correct.

So how is this a “complete” guide to visiting in 2019? Your prices and exchange rates represent your visit in 2017. It’s a little misleading when the prices and exchange rates for your trip were completely different. Your guide’s great, but you can’t claim it’s accurate for 2019 when you haven’t been there for two and a half years.

Awesome write up on the Perito Moreno Glacier especially on the logistics and what to expect. Extremely spot on for solo traveler like me 🙂 Thanks for the generosity of sharing!

Hi PinkyC, so glad we could help. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out and we will try to help out. Happy travels. 🙂

I was wondering what you did for the other 3 nights there? We are going next week and its a last minute trip so rushing to plan as much as I can 🙂 Thanks!

We got there late on the first day, visited the glacier on the second day and relaxed on the third. All the best and have a great trip

Hi there!! I’m a student from China. We were just learning about glaciers in our geography class, and we were told to make a poster about the Perito Moreno Glacier and how we can get to it. Your blog is SO useful!!! Thank you all for making this wonderful blog and thank you again for helping me with my homework. I just wanted to say that, your blog do not just help the people who is going, but also the people who is dreaming of going…… Like me. Thank you guys sooooooo much!!!!! 😛

Hi Cindion, thank you so much. We are so happy we could help. All the best with your studies. 🙂

We have 9 people arriving at El calafate by flight around 10am Will we still have time to make it perito Moreno park after dropping bags at hotel? where can we hire a private minibus? Are there boat ride in the afternoon? Where can we check the boat schedule? Thank you.

Hi Jeanette, best to check with your hotel. They would have a better idea. All the best

Fantastic info, thank you! We just did the glacier in late April (absolutely stunning, perfect weather). The price for return bus is 800 now, but given the Argentinian economy has crashed so badly the value is actually better for tourists (though bad for the locals). We went to counter 10 in the bus station and paid 800 for a private driver with only one other couple. The driver explained many things along the route and stopped for photos. Was quicker getting in to the park without a bus load of people too. Strongly recommend!

Thank you so much David. Thats great about the private driver. That would be definitely way better than the bus. It is sad about the economy crashing for locals. It is so up and down it is hard to keep up with it. Glad you had a great time.

It’s now 800ars return bus ride and 700ars entry!!!!!

Thanks for the update on prices. 🙂

How could 500 ARS be 32.5USD? As far as I know it is 14USD.

At the time of writing this article back in 2017, the inflation was very high. We have heard that today it is very low therefore prices of things are half the price. Maybe next week the inflation can go up again and prices will be expensive. Unfortunately this crazy inflation has been happening in Argentina for a long time. If you travel to Argentina now, it will not be an expensive trip. Happy travels

Thanks for all the info! I may have missed it, but when did you visit the glacier? I am going this January (2019) and just want to be sure that your comments on not needing to book buses/boat rides in advance applied to the high season. Thanks so much!

Hi Caroline, you will have a great time. Since you are going in high season, we highly recommend booking the bus. There are a few companies that go up there at different time during the day. Definitely book in advance because you don’t want to miss out. 🙂

Thank you very much for this useful info; it was clear with good tips!!! I started (now) to plan my trip for the Easter week 2019.

Glad we could help. Thank you for reading. Have a great trip.

Thank you for your great blog! I am trying to determine whether or not I should rent a car. There will be 6 of us. Three of us will be doing the mini-trek on the glacier, and three will plan on just doing the boat ride. All of us want to spend some time on the walkways. It sounds like taking your time and spending as much time as possible on the walkways was time well spent. The tour only spends about 1 hour on the walkways, and I think I would prefer a much longer visit. With the 6 of us and wanting to spend more time on the walkways, it seems that renting a vehicle would be best. Plus, we could use the car to see other places around El Calafate. We will have 2.5 days in El Calafate. Did it seem parking was easy to find at the park and around town? We are planning to stay in town, so perhaps we just park at the hotel and walk around town. Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you, and thanks for the beautiful pictures too!

Hi Yvonne, sorry for the late reply. We have been away on an assignment for the last couple of months, I hope it all worked out for you if you have been already. If not maybe renting a car might be a great option for you and your friends. The buses and tours only give you are short amount of time at the glacier and if you want to hike or really take the area, having your own wheels is definitely the best option. We didn’t have a car but it seemed parking was fine and easy to find in town. Have a great trip or I hope you had a great trip. 🙂

I like your information very much. We plan to do it on next March. But we need go to El Chalten in the same day , So we need back to El Calafate before 4 pm and we are 9 adults, is there any way we can back earlier from the glacier Thank you

Hi Jing, Yes there is an earlier bus. It does not give you much time. Maybe your best option is to privately rent a vehicle and go out there on your own or on a private tour. Have a great time.

Hi, thanks for all the information, great reading. I am planning my trip for November now and we will end in El Calafate. Are there any tour companies you recommend? I know they have tours to trek on the glacier itself, and that is what we want to do. Thanks, I appreciate your anticipated response.

When we went to the visit Perito Moreno Glacier we went to the bus station and got one of the local buses to the glacier. We paid for a return trip and they let us know when we could return. As for the trek on the glacier we are not too sure of a company. Our advice is to ask around when you get there or you can contact companies before hand. All the best and have a great time.

Felt great reading your blog. Its an awesome experience. Wanna visit the glacier soon.

Thanks for inspiring.

Hope you get there. It was amazing to see. Thanks for your comment Senthil.

Excellent advise. We are using it to plan our trip to Calafate. Best I ‘ve read yet Have suggestions for a short trip 2-3 days to Bariloche

Thank you so much for reading. That amount of time in Bariloche would be fine. Definitely rent a car. The area is beautiful. You will have a great time in the area. Here are a couple of article from our friends Dan and John over at Two for the World. We travelled together around the lake district near Bariloche. Have an amazing time Karen. https://www.twofortheworld.com/things-to-do-in-bariloche-and-lakes-district/ https://www.twofortheworld.com/route-of-the-seven-lakes-the-ultimate-one-day-patagonia-road-trip/

Wow – extremely useful post. We have just started our prep of a few months trip to South America (Sept’18-Jan’19)…. hoping it will be a good time – as I noticed, you mentioned the high season starts in December? We are mega excitied – thanks for sharing your experiences!

Hi Natalia, Glad we could help. You are going to have a blast. We will be in Chile in October and November. Don’t worry about the busy time. During December and January, just make sure you prebook everything so you get on the tours and accommodation you want. Have an amazing trip. 🙂

Thank you for this great entry and breakdown for someone interested in visiting El Calafate and the Periot Moreno Glacier. Practical with a touch of personal fun. You have become our primary resource for our trip planning on this area.

Glad we could help Acacia. It is a beautiful area. If you have anymore questions please let us know. Have a great trip and enjoy the area. 🙂

we went today. amazing!

So glad you had a great time. It is definitely an amazing place. 🙂

Hi I am just downloading my photos of this wonderful place, like you I saw it in sunshine on the boardwalks and this was fun. I loved the boat ride too as the colours look different when you are looking from water. A condor positioned itself with grace as I came to the point on in the road in where you see the glacier for the first time I didn’t walk on the ice being rather more interested to see calving from the balconies…you hear what sounds like a series of sharp crack shots all the time, even if you do not catch a large chunk falling and it is good to crunch crisps at the same time.

So glad you had a great time Liz. I bet you got a lot of amazing photos. Hearing it carve is very surreal isn’t it. 🙂

Just found your very informative blog. We are going in December this year. Do you suggest doing the boat ride when you first arrive or after doing the boardwalk? I note you are in OZ at present. I hope you are enjoying our country.

Hi Margaret, Bet you are excited for your up and coming trip. The area is gorgeous. This all depends what you want to take away from Perito Moreno. We personally weren’t too fussed about the boat ride as we had seen a glacier up close before. We you first get to the glacier check the boat times. If you would like to do both maybe the boat ride first then the walk. There are a few marked sections on the walk so you can work out how many you can do with the time you have left. Going by the public transport provided you are limited with time. If you are travelling by your own car then you don’t need to rush. Take your time. We have you enjoy the area. Have a great trip. Happy travels

So helpful!, Thanks

Glad we could help. 🙂

It’s awesome by just reading your posts and looking at those stunning pictures of yours! I believe you must have fond memories about this exciting expedition to the glacier park. I am planning a trip there in middle of May this year and do you what’s the weather condition during the winter months in southern Argentina?

Thank you for your comment Benjamin. We do have great memories from national park and Argentina. Not too sure what the weather will be like. Sorry. Have a great trip.

I see you always quote prices in ARS as well as USD. When you say they require cash for the service are you saying ARS or USD ? I’m just trying to figure out how much ARS to bring on our trip. Or can we pay with USD?

We quote in both currencies as it makes it easy for people to budget. Some places in Argentina do take USD but for a better price, paying local is the best way. Check with your bank and see what currency exchange rate they provide if you take money out with your card in Argentina. This is how we get our local money. We find some times the exchange fee at the currency exchange shops can be high. Have a great trip.

Love your post. WE are heading to South America in December and wanted to get the most bang for the buck. This post came in the perfect time for me to get to see more for less.

Keep it up!

Hi April, So happy we could help. Hope you have a great trip. 🙂

Love this guide! Planning to visit Perito Moreno Glacier this year too and I really found this blog helpful. Thank you for sharing!

Glad we could help. It was amazing to witness. It’s up to you with the boat trips but if you want to save some money don’t worry about it. You get closer to the glacier on the boardwalks. have a great time

Love the fact you packed Wine along with your snacks You really do have your priorities straight.

It looks stunning and such a beautiful place to visit. The scale of it is epic.

We treated ourselves. It definitely is a stunning place. 🙂

The Perito Moreno glacier looks absolutely stunning. I love the colour the ice turns when its concentrated like that. I really hope that we can look after our planet well enough for this type of thing to still be in existence in several centuries´ time. Argentina looks like an incredibly diverse and beautiful country!

We agree. We hope it is around for several centuries too. Thank you for reading. Happy travels.

Wow! You nailed it!. Great Pictures with Information about Perito Moreno Glacier. It’s so beautiful. Thanks for Sharing.

Thank you so much. Definitely a stunning place. 🙂

Perito Moreno Glacier Trek & Walkway (El Calafate Argentina)

The Perito Moreno glacier is a natural wonder in Argentina made of big, blue, beautiful ice. In fact, this stunning glacier covers more surface area than the entire city of Buenos Aires.

You can see this Patagonian glacier from a metal walkway that spans the edge of the lake, or there are even glacier trekking tours so you can hike on top of the ice with a local guide!

Needless to say, seeing this glacier and hiking on it is an amazing experience, and it’s very popular with tourists coming to the Los Glaciares National Park. It’s also surprisingly easy to do on a day trip from the town of El Calafate, in Argentina’s southern Patagonia region.

This travel guide will explain how to get to Perito Moreno glacier from El Calafate (with or without a tour), and how to do the glacier trek. Then, I’ll share some interesting facts about the glacier itself!

Getting ready to hike the Perito Moreno glacier. Epic!

Where Is Perito Moreno Glacier?

The Perito Moreno glacier is located on Lake Argentino, near the town of El Calafate, in Argentina’s famous Patagonia region.

El Calafate is a tourist friendly town with lots of comfy hotels and good restaurants, so it’s a great place to base yourself for visiting the Perito Moreno glacier and other sights in Patagonia.

How To Get To Perito Moreno Glacier

The closest airport to the Perito Moreno glacier is the small international airport in El Calafate (FTE), which has direct flights from Buenos Aires, Cordoba, Ushuaia, and other places.

The flight from Buenos Aires to El Calafate takes about 3 hours and it’s offered by multiple airlines, with pretty reasonable prices. There are two airports in Buenos Aires (AEP or EZE) and you can use either of them to fly here.

You can shop for flights to Argentina on Skyscanner.

The spectacular walkway at Perito Moreno glacier

Once you arrive in El Calafate, it’s a 60-90 minute drive to Perito Moreno glacier, depending on your pace. The road is winding when you get near the end, but it’s all paved and in good condition.

If you’re driving, you can find the location on the map here , although they’ll usually ask you to park earlier and take a free shuttle the rest of the way to the glacier since there’s limited parking.

You can get to Perito Moreno with a bus, private taxi, or rental car . The bus service is offered by multiple companies with regular departures from the bus terminal in El Calafate .

If you want to simplify things even more, there are also day tours to Perito Moreno glacier from El Calafate that handle all of the transportation for you (more on that below).

Best Perito Moreno Glacier Tours

One of the easiest ways to visit the Perito Moreno glacier is with a day tour from El Calafate.

GetYourGuide has high-rated day tours to see Perito Moreno glacier from the walkway, with an optional boat cruise to see it from another angle. These tours include a bilingual tour guide and hotel pickup and drop-off from El Calafate. They’re usually shared group tours, or they also have private tours .

If you’re mainly wanting to do trekking on the ice, they have a glacier ‘mini-trekking’ tour which I used myself, and they also have the ‘Big Ice’ trek where you get to go farther and see more of Perito Moreno glacier.

If you don’t think your fitness level is good enough for hiking on the ice, they have a ‘Safari Azul’ tour that takes you to a beach in front of the glacier, where you can touch the ice and see it up close without trekking on it. Last, but not least, they also have kayaking tours and boat cruises at the Perito Moreno glacier.

We’ve used GetYourGuide for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they’re great. Highly recommended!

Perito Moreno Glacier Walkway: What To Expect

The most popular way to see the Perito Moreno glacier is from the metal walkway that spans the edge of Lake Argentino and its turquoise colored waters.

The views are sensational and easy to access! There’s a whole network of platforms here showing different sides of the glacier, and the walkways are divided into color coded circuits.

In my opinion, the very best views are on the red and yellow circuits. The black and green circuits don’t have much to see, although the blue circuit occasionally allows you to see some floating icebergs up close.

The views from the walkway are fantastic, and it feels like you’re really close to the glacier. Pictures don’t do it justice. It almost feels like you could reach out and touch the glacier!

There are photographers from the national park who can take your picture here for a small fee, or you can take as many photos as you want with your own phone or camera. Sometimes you’ll see giant condors flying overhead.

During the summer, you can witness ‘calving’ at Perito Moreno glacier, where big chunks of ice occasionally break off the edge of the glacier and fall into the lake with a crash.

It’s very impressive to see and hear, and if you’re quick with your camera you can sometimes catch it. The best time to visit is in the middle of the day if you want to see lots of this activity!

The viewing platforms at Perito Moreno glacier are suitable for all ages. Some of the views are even wheelchair accessible, although the best spots are reached by stairs.

Most of the walking is pretty easy, and you can get to the last platforms with a relatively short stroll from the parking area. However, if you go down to the bottom platforms, nearest to the glacier, then you’ll have to go back up again afterwards, so it’s not without some effort.

A few hours at the glacier should be plenty of time for most people, although I think I could’ve stayed most of the day taking pictures. When you get done exploring all of the walkways, there’s a cafe, gift shop, and free bathrooms in the parking lot.

Glacier Mini-Trekking Tour

One of the best things to do at Perito Moreno is hiking on the glacier itself!

A tour booking is required for this, and you’ll join a small group of 10 to 20 other travelers. They’ll give you a pair of spiky metal crampons to attach to the bottom of your shoes, and then you can walk on the surface of the ice with a professional guide, taking pictures as you go.

They run these tours daily, but they’re very popular and often sell out (especially in the summer months), so it’s a good idea to book it well in advance.

Hiking on the glacier is a must!

Perito Moreno Glacier Walkway Ice Trek Hike El Calafate Argentina Patagonia

Glacier mini-trekking at Perito Moreno

According to the company, the glacier mini-trekking tour is suitable for ages 8 to 65 years old. You don’t have to be very fit to hike on the glacier, although they list obesity and some other health problems as a possible disqualifier.

The trekking guides that conduct these tours are from a company called Hielo y Aventura, and they’ve been running the glacier tours for more than 30 years without any major safety incidents. The guides are bilingual, so they speak good English and Spanish.

It’s a full day tour (up to 10 hours) since it includes driving to the national park, crossing the lake by boat, attending a short safety briefing, fitting the crampons and safety helmets, hiking on the glacier, and other activities, and then returning to El Calafate afterwards.

At the end of the tour, before leaving the glacier, they gave us complementary whiskey tumblers to drink with ice from the glacier. Fun! All in all, the Perito Moreno glacier trek is an amazing experience and you shouldn’t miss it!

Glacier ‘Big Ice’ Trek

If you want to do even more hiking on the glacier, there’s a ‘Big Ice’ trek that goes longer and farther than the normal trek.

Compared to the mini-trekking tour, the ‘Big Ice’ trip gives you twice as much time on the glacier, so you can see more of the unique landscape, and you’ll have more time to take pictures. The tour groups are also smaller and more personalized, which is a bonus if you don’t want to go hiking with a bunch of people.

The Big Ice trek is harder, so it’s only recommended for people who are fit and ages 18 to 50 years old. It’s also more pricey. For me personally, I was happy with my decision to do the normal trek, but I’m sure I will be back at Perito Moreno someday, and then I definitely plan to do the Big Ice trek!

If you’re not a frequent visitor to Argentina and you think this may be your only chance, then it might be worth it to spring the cash for the Big Ice tour. I’m sure it’s the experience of a lifetime!

What To Bring For Glacier Hikes

  • Outerwear: It can be very windy at the glacier, so you’ll want to bring a jacket and probably a warm winter beanie hat just in case.
  • Gloves: This is a requirement for the glacier trekking tours. The reason for this is because if you happen to fall on the ice and catch yourself, the ice can be sharp enough to cut your bare hands. If you don’t have a pair of gloves, they can loan you some when you get there. I wore fingerless gloves so I could still work my camera, and that was fine.
  • Footwear: Any shoes or hiking boots will work. When you trek on the glacier, crampons are provided with the tour and they can fit them to any shoe size.
  • Backpack: This can be very helpful for holding any snacks, drinks, and other items you bring with you for the Perito Moreno glacier trekking tour.
  • Camera: The glacier is so photogenic. A lens with a little bit of zoom is ideal, but just about any camera setup will do great here.

Entrance Fee: Los Glaciares National Park

Perito Moreno is part of Argentina’s Los Glaciares National Park, so there’s a fee you have to pay to enter the park. This applies whether you’re visiting the walkway or doing other activities in the park like glacier trekking, kayaking, or boat cruises.

You can find the current park fee on the Argentina national parks website . However, if you visit two days in a row then the second day price is discounted by 50 percent. Just remember to keep your ticket so you can show them.

The park fee is something paid separate from your bus tickets or tour price, and you can pay with cash (pesos) or credit card when you reach the entrance of Los Glaciares National Park. I paid with a foreign credit card and that was fine.

You can also buy park tickets in advance on the Argentina national parks website , but it’s entirely in Spanish and the site is very glitchy. I was never able to get it to work. No worries though, because the park tickets are unlimited and never sell out, unlike the tours.

An advance booking is not required for the national park tickets, and visiting the walkway is free aside from the park entrance fee. The only thing you need to book in advance is the glacier trekking or other special activities if you plan to do them.

Fun Facts About Perito Moreno Glacier

  • How big is it? The glacier is 30 kilometers long (almost 19 miles), and it covers a total area of 250 square kilometers (100 mi²), making it bigger than the Argentine capital city of Buenos Aires. The wall of ice towers over Lago Argentino, with an average height of 75 meters (250 ft) above the surface of the lake.
  • Why is it blue? Pure glacier ice is blue because it’s so dense and compressed, with the air bubbles squeezed out from the ice. As a result, it reflects the blue colors of the light spectrum, and a beautiful blue color reaches our eyes. It’s a lot different from the frozen water you get out of the freezer.
  • What is the source? The glacier is part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, which is the world’s second largest contiguous extrapolar ice field, and one of the world’s biggest reserves of fresh water.
  • How did it get its name? The Perito Moreno glacier was named after a 19th century Argentine explorer, Francisco Moreno, who was influential in the Patagonia region. ‘Perito’ in Spanish is a title of respect that means ‘expert’ or ‘specialist.’
  • Is there more than one Perito Moreno in Argentina? Yes. Somewhat confusingly, there’s a national park named Perito Moreno in Argentina, but it’s located far away from this glacier. There’s also a town named Perito Moreno, but it’s located almost 700 kilometers from the glacier. This threw me for a loop one time when I was buying bus tickets from El Calafate. The Perito Moreno town, glacier, and national park are three very different places! If you’re looking for Perito Moreno glacier on a map, you can find it here .
  • Is the glacier melting or shrinking? Unlike most glaciers around the world, Perito Moreno is not shrinking. This glacier is unusual because it’s actually advancing and moving forward by up to 2 meters (6 feet) per day, although the overall mass stays in balance because of the chunks of ice it loses from calving and ruptures.
  • What is the rupture? Because of its constant advance, the Perito Moreno glacier sometimes forms a dam at the edge of Lake Argentino, blocking off the southern arm of the lake (Brazo Rico) and causing the water level to rise and put tremendous pressure on the glacier. Eventually, this leads to a spectacular rupture of the glacial dam, and huge chunks of ice fall into the lake. The rupture happens every 3 to 5 years, but it’s completely unpredictable, so you would be lucky to witness it!
  • What is calving? Calving is when big chunks of ice occasionally break off the edge of the Perito Moreno glacier and fall into the lake with a crash. On a good day, this can happen as often as every 30 minutes, and afternoon is the best time to see it. It’s an amazing sight!
  • What is the UNESCO status? The Perito Moreno glacier is part of Los Glaciares National Park, which has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. This is because of its outstanding natural significance and beauty.
  • How hard is it to get to Perito Moreno glacier from El Calafate? It’s easy to get to Perito Moreno glacier from anywhere in the town of El Calafate. You can get there with the bus, take a private taxi, rent a car , or book a tour .
  • How can you hike on the Perito Moreno glacier? There’s a glacier mini-trek or a ‘Big Ice’ trek . The Big Ice hike is longer and better, but it’s harder and more expensive. Most people will probably be happy with the mini trek. It’s a fantastic experience.

Best Time To Visit Patagonia

The best time to visit Perito Moreno glacier is in the spring, summer, or fall. The summer months run from December to February, and these months have some of the longest days and best hiking weather, but they’re also more popular and expensive.

The shoulder months of March, April, and November can also be great, although the temperatures may be a bit cooler. All of the pictures in this travel guide were taken in mid-March, which seemed just about perfect to me.

It’s possible to visit the glacier during the winter, but a lot of the tours like glacier trekking and kayaking don’t run at that time, so you’ll be more limited in what you can do. Boat cruises still run, and the glacier is still spectacular. The park is also less crowded and prices are cheaper than normal, so that’s one upside of visiting in the winter.

There’s really no best time of day to visit the glacier. It’s fantastic at any time of day. You may be able to avoid some of the crowds in the morning or late afternoon, although the best lighting for photographs is generally around late morning or early afternoon. The glacier can be backlit by the sun in the evening, so that’s not ideal for photos.

If you want to witness the calving activity where big chunks of ice fall into the lake with a boom, the best time is near the middle of the day, when the temperatures are warmest. Any time in the afternoon is great for that.

Other Tips For El Calafate Town

  • Hotels: There are a bunch of comfortable hotels and hostels in El Calafate town. Check out Calafate Hostel for a budget option, Kau Yatun Boutique for midrange, and Xelena Hotel for high end.
  • Restaurants: The town has lots of good places to eat. A nice breakfast option is Pietro’s Cafe , and for dinner check out La Tablita or Isabel Cocina al Disco .
  • Credit Cards: Most places in town accept credit cards, but some may be cash only. Bring enough cash just in case. The ATMs in town are not very reliable.
  • Money Changers: You can find money changers (‘cambio’) in El Calafate with good rates. I changed US Dollars to Argentine Pesos at the Arte Indio souvenir shop near the town center.
  • WiFi: The hotels and restaurants in El Calafate usually have fast, reliable WiFi. I was able to find great WiFi everywhere I went in town.
  • Cell Service: With T-Mobile roaming, I had good cell service/phone reception from Claro in El Calafate town. Staying in touch with home is no problem at all here.
  • Supplies: There are plenty of grocery and convenience stores in El Calafate, as well as shops where you can buy or rent tents, sleeping bags, backpacks, jackets, and all kinds of other equipment for camping and hiking. I’m sure it’s more pricey than bringing your own gear, though, so do that if you can.
  • Safety: Argentina is a pretty safe country overall, and the Patagonia region is especially safe. Generally you don’t have to worry about crime in El Calafate. Just practice normal precautions. Don’t leave cash in your room, or valuables in your car.

This tour is a 1 hour boat ride in front of the north face of the Perito Moreno Glacier , considered the most beautiful face. It is an ideal excursion if you visit the glacier on your own by car because it complements the visit to the balconies with an approach to the face of the glacier from the water , with the possibility of seeing floating icebergs and occasional landslides from close up. The tour has several daily departures from Puerto Moreno (located in the beginning of the balconies in front of the lower parking lot of the glacier) on the Canal de los Témpanos. A few seconds after departure, the boat approaches to the front of the north wall of the glacier, where you can appreciate its great height and size from a totally different perspective than what is seen from the balconies. You will see the contact area between the Perito Moreno Glacier and the peninsula where the famous ice bridge forms and the glacier breaks every few years. This phenomenon has made the Perito Moreno Glacier known worldwide for its spectacular nature. Later, the boat ride will continue slowly in front of the entire width of the north wall hoping to enjoy some icefall towards the water , to then return to Puerto Moreno. Those who would like to book the tour departing from El Calafate can add the optional round-trip transfer from your hotel to the glacier, which includes a guide service throughout the excursion.
