By Larisha Paul
Larisha Paul
Tate McRae released her debut album last year, titled I Used to Think I Could Fly . The record itself features soaring highs, like the envy-heavy single “She’s All I Wanna Be,” and emotional lows, such as “Feel Like Shit.” She wasn’t sure if she could fly then, but now she’s preparing to take flight on the “Are We Flying” tour .
The 20-date North American tour is scheduled to begin on Sept. 5 in Chicago and will wrap on Oct. 13 in Seattle. McRae will make stops in Detroit, Toronto, Boston, New York, Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, Portland, and more.

About charlieonnafriday
“I’m living this life to the fullest,” says charlieonnafriday. The 20-year-old singer/songwriter has achieved several hundred million streams and collaborated with superstars like Macklemore and Lil Tjay. The Seattle born-and-raised, LA-based charlieonnafriday began recording songs in his friend’s basement after football practice. “From the very jump, it always revolved around doing it for fun,” he recalls. With over 100 million streams, his breakout “After Hours” focused on that idea. “That song gives off the vibe that we’re here; we don’t want this night to ever end. charlieonnafriday is somewhat of a musical chameleon — He’s collaborated with rap mainstay Lil Tjay on 2023’s “Same Friends,” was a featured artist on Macklemore’s BEN, and maintains a diverse range of style and influences. “Some days I wake up, and maybe a little bit more of the love for Country comes out,” he says, pointing to a recent Nashville stop. “Maybe I’ll find a Young Thug-type beat and make a straight-up rap song. It always comes down to me making what I like and feel like making at that time.” Upcoming drops honor vintage pop samples in a new, refreshing way and merge country with trap drums. charlieonnafriday continues to maximize his moment. He has a set vision for his music, brand, and message. “You only have so long to live here. Have fun, do it right; every day is a Friday.

Tate McRae, Daniel Caesar and Aysanabee Win Major Awards at 2024 Juno Opening Night Awards: Full Winners List
The beaches, new west, sza and others also won at the first night of the junos, which set records for most indigenous nominees and most first-time nominees this year..
Tate McRae won both major awards she was nominated for at the 2024 Juno Opening Night Awards, which was livestreamed from the Halifax Convention Centre on Saturday (March 23). The Calgary-born breakout superstar continued her big year both in Canada and internationally, one that included a major Billboard chart hit and appearing on the cover of Billboard . She won single of the year for "greedy" and artist of the year, though the California-based singer was not in attendance to accept either award.
McRae performed at last year's ceremony and was nominated for five 2023 awards but didn't win any of them, but 2024 brought her to even bigger heights with the release of her album Think Later . She's also nominated for the TikTok Juno Fan Choice Award on the main Juno Awards telecast on Sunday (March 24), which gives her the chance to win four this year.

Several breakout Canadian stars earned accolades at the Opening Night Awards. According to Allan Reid, President & CEO of the JUNO Awards, 2024 had the most submissions in Juno Awards history, which led to 90 first-time nominees.
Aysanabee won for both songwriter of the year and alternative album of the year for Hear and Now , and talked about his rags-to-riches journey. "I grew up in a trailer in North Ontario without electricity or running water," he said. "And now I'm here."
Until recently, it was rare for Indigenous musicians to win Junos outside of the Indigenous category, but that's begun to change as First Nations artists have made a major impact in the country's music industry. Aysanabee shouted out Amanda Rheume and ShoShona Kish, who founded the female and Indigenous-owned label Ishkodé Records. He recognized that this was the most Indigenous artists who had ever been nominated, and invited them all to stand up.
Despite his two wins, he actually lost in the Contemporary Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year category to Quebec's Elisapie, whose album Inuktitut reimagines classic pop and rock hits in the title language. Peguis First Nation singer-songwriter William Prince's Stand in the Joy won for contemporary roots album of the year.
The Beaches and Charlotte Cardin both had their first American chart hits since last year's Junos, and both won major awards this year. The Beaches won for rock album of the year for Blame My Ex, while Cardin won for pop album of the year for 99 Nights . The Montreal-based Cardin led all artists for most nominations this year and will have a chance to win two more on Sunday for the popular-voted fan choice and for the year's biggest award, album of the year. "This is so cool!" she said, accepting the award.
New West won for breakthrough group of the year and joked that they were a "very very famous TikTok band." Co-hosts Aba Amuquandoh and Damhnait Doyle, both CBC personalities, earlier commented that being an artist in 2024 often meant becoming a TikTok star or being rediscovered by a new generation, but that Canadians "punch above our weight" because of both hustle and support from government arts funding. That's under the microscope in the industry right now during an updating of the Broadcasting Act . The event also recognized this year’s Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award to music executive, author and lawyer Chip Sutherland, one of the architects of the Radio Starmaker Fund, which helps launch emerging Canadian artists with support from radio.
Winning electronic album of the year for INFINITY CLUB , Bambii talked about the unparalleled strength of Toronto's underground scene, "the real Toronto," and implored journalists and industry stakeholders to "do your research" and dig deeper.
Several Juno winners have also done well in the U.S. market. R&B star SZA won for international album of the year for SOS , while Shawn Everett won for both producer of the year and recording engineer of the year for his work with Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard. Daniel Caesar won in the contemporary R&B recording of the year category for Never Enough , while long-running singer-songwriter Feist won adult alternative album of the year for Multitudes . And Nashville-based Allison Russell's video and its director Ethan Tobman won music video of the year for "Demons."
A total of 42 awards were presented in rapid-fire succession at the Opening Night Awards. Performers included Aqyila, LU KALA, Begonia, Jah'Mila and Lili-Ann De Francesco.
Four more awards will be presented on the televised broadcast on Sunday night at 8 p.m. ET on CBC TV, CBC Gem, CBC Radio One, CBC Music, CBC Listen, and globally at CBCMusic.ca/junos and CBC Music’s Facebook, YouTube and Twitter pages.

Canada's music market grew by 12.19% last year, reaching US$659.6 million in revenues. That growth outpaced both the U.S. market, which grew by 7.2%, and global growth of 10.2% — the second highest recorded global growth rate, according to the report.
Some individual Canadian artists did well on a global scale, too: the report ranks Drake and The Weeknd at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, in its Global Artist 2023 chart, which considers artist, track, and album performance. Taylor Swift took the top spot there, followed by South Korean groups Seventeen and Stray Kids.
A statement from IFPI , which represents the global recording industry, and Music Canada, an association representing major Canadian labels, attributes much of Canada's revenue growth to streaming revenues, which jumped by 8.6% here, and subscription streaming in particular, which increased by 10.1%. The associations emphasize the challenges posed by streaming manipulation, highlighting IFPI's recent legal complaint against nine Canadian-based sites that sold fraudulent streams. The sites are now offline.
Beyond Canadian borders, IFPI's State of the Industry highlights how national markets are intertwined worldwide, using the growing popularity of Punjabi music in Canada and the launch of 91 North Records — a collaboration between Warner Music Canada and Warner Music India — as an example. "We set up 91 North Records," Warner's Simon Robson says, in "reaction to something that is happening organically and a proactive turbocharge to make sure it doesn’t just continue but flourishes and finds a wider audience." Robson points out that several of the most popular Indian songs in 2022 came from artists based in Canada.
Challenges for emerging artists
While Canada's revenue growth is positive news, the numbers don't indicate which artists might not be feeling the bump in numbers. Canadian music organizations like Re:Sound have been highlighting the economic challenges facing musicians in a landscape where touring costs are increasing and the digital landscape has transformed revenue opportunities. Most major streaming services have royalty models that translate to fractions of a cent per stream, making it challenging for many artists to receive more than pennies in royalties.
Spotify also released a major report this week, Loud and Clear , focused on streaming royalties from 2023. The report highlights that Spotify paid out $4.5 billion to indie-artist catalogues, and that 66,000 artists are generating at least $10K in royalties, with 11,600 generating $100K or more. The majority of those 66,000 are from countries where English is not the primary language. Spotify's royalty sharing model pays out royalties based on the size of a given artist's share of overall streams generated on the platform.
In the report, Spotify designates 225,000 of its music uploaders as emerging and professional artists, who depend on streaming royalties as part of their income. But some, like indie artist Damon K, have pointed out that this classification system devalues the labour and artistry of working musicians who aren't amassing streams.
In the U.S., organizations like the United Musicians and Allied Workers are working with representatives to promote the Living Wage for Musicians Act , which, if passed in Congress, would see that artists receive a penny per stream.

The 11 musicians to listen to in 2024, from Tate McRae to Sans Soucis
A selection of the best up-and-coming artists across pop, electronic, indie and more.
2023 was a strange year in music. Not one of its 10 bestselling albums was new – unless you count 1989 (Taylor’s Version) , Taylor Swift ’s rerecorded version of her 2014 record. Streaming algorithms and the flood of social media means it’s harder than ever to cut through. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t new artists out there, or that you shouldn’t be listening to them.
In pop, look out for Tate McRae – who is, admittedly, already huge in some circles – a young dancer from Canada whose impassioned, sultry love songs recall The Weeknd. Also jostling to be the next huge pop starlet is Tyla, from Johannesburg, with a pacy blend of afrobeats and R&B – but the catchiest song of the year is bound to be made by Korean producer Peggy Gou, the coolest kid in dance music.
If that all sounds a bit much, try MJ Lenderman, a soulful troubadour from North Carolina with an ironic, youthful twang, or Katy Kirby, purveyor of delectable acoustic delicacies that fizz and pop with life and feeling. eee gee is your woman for a dose of Scandi-pop levity; her emotionally intelligent summer anthems are reminiscent of Haim. For real girlband grooves, though, look to Say She She, a Brooklyn three-piece making nu-disco with a feminist slant – and The Last Dinner Party, who were announced as BBC Radio 1’s Sound of 2024 on Friday, are bringing back 2010 maximalism with their emotive baroque-pop outpourings.
Also coming up is Cristale, a fearless Brixton MC with more bars than your phone by a 5G tower; Hinako Omori, offering undulating ambient soundscapes more beautiful than a travel blogger’s Instagram; and Sans Soucis, whose experimental electro-pop is offset by their angelic voice and hints of African rumba.
All of these artists are set for big years, with new albums and tours aplenty – so whatever your tipple, break free of your Spotify most-played and dive into something new.
Tate McRae
You could fairly say that 20-year-old Canadian Tate McRae has outgrown the term “up-and-coming” – but in 2024 she could become stratospheric. McRae’s slick, catchy pop songs recall both the angsty outbursts of Olivia Rodrigo and the smooth, smoky Euphoria soundtrack. Like many of her generation, she has come up largely through social media – but it’s mainly her dancing that attracted attention. At age 13 she reached the final of So You Think You Can Dance ; she has been posting dance videos on YouTube since 2011. Even now, it’s her music videos and expressive precision that sets her apart, and following her second album Think Later , which was released in December, expect many more viral TikTok hits.
For fans of: Olivia Rodrigo, The Weeknd, Billie Eilish
Songs to stream: “she’s all i wanna be”, “exes”, “cut my hair”
Look out for: UK tour from 20-26 April, starting at the O2 Academy in Glasgow ( tickets here )
Dance music is having a moment, and among those blazing the trail is the Korean producer and DJ Peggy Gou. Having been revered in dance circles for years for her flawless deep- and tech-house DJ sets, the 32-year-old broke into the mainstream last year with the impossibly catchy “(It Goes Like) Nanana” – and looks set to get even bigger. With her unique, chilled style – distinguished not least by her ice-cool vocal, and inspired by classic 90s and 00s dance music – she is not only soundtracking a buzzing club scene but pioneering for women DJs and producers. She may be cooler than your most intimidatingly cool acquaintance, but Peggy Gou is also going to be playing in the background of your best nights this year.
For fans of: Yaeji, Fred again, Eliza Rose
Songs to stream: “(It Goes Like) Nanana”, “Starry Night”, “It Makes You Forget (Itgehane)”
Look out for: A debut album, confirmed for sometime in 2024
The Last Dinner Party
“Art-rock”, “baroque-pop” – however you describe The Last Dinner Party, it’s going to involve aesthetic. This all-female five-piece rock band from London are taking the industry by storm, and after they were named BBC Radio 1’s Sound of 2024 last week, it looks like they could explode this year. Their expansive, full-throated songs – and music videos – are more like decadent rhapsodies, with the multilayered shouted vocals of Florence Welch, the costume department of an English literature-themed burlesque show and pronounced running-across-the-moors energy. Their debut album is due in early February – so strap into a corset, erroneously cut your own fringe and get ready to wail.
For fans of: Florence and the Machine, Wolf Alice, Black Country New Road
Songs to stream: “My Lady of Mercy”, “Nothing Matters”, “Caesar on a TV Screen”
Look out for: A debut album coming 2 February
Hinako Omori
Within the first few seconds of listening to the British-Japanese artist Hinako Omori you will feel your entire body relax. The classically trained musician creates lush, rolling electronic soundscapes that make you feel like you’re floating. Her hypnotic 2022 album A Journey… was her debut solo work, having previously collaborated in sessions with the likes of Ellie Goulding and KT Tunstall – and in 2023 she followed it up with Stillness, Softness, another ambient, transfixing record of winding synth melodies, ASMR spoken word and otherworldly beauty.
For fans of: Laurie Anderson, Nicolas Jaar, Jon Hopkins
Songs to stream: “A Structure”, “Stalactites”, “A Journey”
Look out for: 2024 festival appearances. In the meantime, sit back and luxuriate.
Katy Kirby
It was a strange time, deep into the pandemic, so you’d be forgiven for not realising that Texas-born Katy Kirby wrote one of the best albums of 2021. But now she’s back, there are no excuses. Cool Dry Place was a beautifully crafted, delicate record about emotional intimacy and the minutiae of life from a singer who grew up on worship music, and has clearly imbibed something holy. Kirby’s gently lilting vocal, poetic lyrics and softly-softly melodies are enchanting, and yet often unexpected, with powerful, poppy choruses – her new album, and inevitable widespread recognition, can’t come soon enough.
For fans of: Laura Marling, Weyes Blood, Nick Drake
Songs to stream: “Cool Dry Place”, “Traffic!”, “Party of the Century”
Look out for: New album, Blue Raspberry , coming 26 January
MJ Lenderman
The North Carolina folk musician MJ Lenderman has been steadily gaining traction for a few years – but his 2022 album Boat Songs has seen him come to the fore of the indie-folk scene. Lenderman’s songs are playful yet heartfelt, old-school yet fresh, and all underlined with his satisfying, husky vocals and shredding guitar. His partner Karly Hartzman is the lead vocalist of the band Wednesday, with whom he has just toured – but his solo material is the perfect music for the new year, a kitchen singalong or the open road: romantic through and through.
For fans of: Big Thief, Bob Dylan, Neil Young
Songs to stream: “Tlc Cagematch”, “Heartbreak Blues”, “Hangover Game”
Look out for: His live album And the Wind (Live and Loose!) , recently released in November
Since her dancehall single “Bong Bing”, released with the Jamaican producer Laa Lee, went viral in 2022, the Brixton MC Cristale has found herself suddenly on the receiving end of a lot of hype. She released her debut album What It’s Like To Be Young not long afterwards – and with new songs released in December, she looks set to push to the front of London’s drill scene, with her superb, precise rhythmic flows, punchy, incisive lyrics and ability to move between genres, which brings her music warmth and energy.
For fans of: Dave, Little Simz, J Hus
Songs to stream: “Bong Bing”, “Artiste”, “13 Going on 30”
Look out for: Her role in Daniel Kaluuya’s new Netflix drama The Kitchen , released 19 January
The Danish singer Emma Grankvist, AKA eee gee, not only has an angelic voice, but a knack for the sort of summery pop anthems that never quite leave you. With a heavy dose of Scandi-cool, she pairs precise, rhythmic choruses with emotionally intelligent lyrics – the result is an easy wash of beautiful sound that fizzes with energy. She’s got two albums – 2022’s Winning and 2023’s SHE-REX – to get your teeth into, and a brilliant (and name-appropriate) cover of the Bee Gees’ “More Than a Woman”.
For fans of: Haim, The Weather Station, Metronomy
Songs to stream: “School Reunion”, “Favourite Lover”, “Promise to Pick Up the Phone”
Look out for: Shows in London and Manchester 19 and 20 April ( tickets here )
21-year-old Tyla, who was born in Johannesburg in 2002, may just be a superstar in the making. The combination of a voice like honey and formidable ambition is sure to catapult her to bona fide celebrity. Having made a name for herself on social media, Tyla released her hit single “Water” last year, which blends afrobeats and R&B to find a propulsive, addictive sound. She has said she hopes to be the first global pop star from Africa – and judging by her career so far, I wouldn’t be surprised if her wish came true.
For fans of: SZA, Ariana Grande, Burna Boy
Songs to stream: “Water”, “Truth or Dare”, “On and On”
Look out for: Self-titled debut album, coming 1 March
Say She She
How about some new-wave disco-soul led by three women with a flawless vocal blend? Yes, please. Say She She, from Brooklyn, have swiftly become the coolest girlband in the world since their debut record in 2022. With funky basslines and soulful grooves, they combine the usual good-time grooves of disco with feminist messaging, creating a wonderful juxtaposition of fire and water. If you listen to 6Music, you’re likely to have come across Say She She in the past year – but expect to hear a lot more of them from now on.
For fans of: Jessie Ware, Chic, Lianne La Havas
Songs to stream: “Reeling”, “C’est Si Bon”, “Prism”
Look out for: UK tour from 5-12 March, starting at Brighton’s Komedia ( tickets here )
Sans Soucis
The songwriter and producer Sans Soucis is originally from Italy, but incorporates a hugely eclectic range of influences into their work, including Congolese rumba, which softly inflects their usual modality – soft electro-pop – with a buoying pulse. Their voice is exquisite, their songs vulnerable and introspective – but they’re also not afraid to be experimental, and their songs occasionally dig into a heavier, more challenging – and welcome – electronica. With four singles under their belt in 2023, Sans Soucis’s journey of self-discovery is coming soon to a speaker near you in 2024.
For fans of: Sudan Archives, Tune-Yards, Romy
Songs to stream: “Games (feat. Cécile Kyenge)”, “Lost When I’m Around You”, “I Know Your Present”
Look out for: A free one-off show at the Old Blue Last, Shoreditch, 30 January ( tickets here )

Aysanabee, Tate McRae, Tobi lead Juno Award winners at pre-telecast Junos
Artists from three corners of Canada's music scene were celebrated at the Juno Awards industry gala on Saturday as rapper Tobi, alternative singer Aysanabee and pop star Tate McRae emerged as big winners.
All three pocketed two Junos each with Oji-Cree musician Aysanabee's "Here and Now" being named alternative album of the year, while he also won the songwriter award.

Toronto rapper Tobi's "Panic" landed rap album of the year while its track “Someone I Knew” picked up rap single.
And while Calgary native McRae wasn't in attendance, she landed two of the night's biggest awards. Her pop smash "Greedy" was picked as single of the year and she won artist of the year.
Another double winner found himself amid the most surreal of Juno-winning circumstances as technical guru Shawn Everett won his second award of the night while talking backstage about his first.
Everett was named producer of the year for his work with Miley Cyrus and Alabama Shakes member Brittany Howard.
Dressed in massive black platform shoes and sporting luscious dreadlocks, Everett watched a live feed of the main room with befuddlement as one of the hosts accepted his second win in his honour.
“I won? That’s crazy,” Everett said backstage while learning he was also named engineer of the year.
“This is a surreal moment for me. This is weird.”
Everett was later given another chance to accept his second award in front of his peers, which he used to thank his manager and his family.
Other winners at the Saturday event included Montreal pop singer Charlotte Cardin, who went into this year’s Junos with a leading six nominations. Her “99 Nights” took home pop album of the year.
And Toronto band the Beaches, who saw their single “Blame Brett” become a TikTok sensation last year, saw its album "Blame My Ex" win rock album of the year.
James Barker Band picked up country album for "Ahead of Our Time," while Toronto music collective New West won breakthrough group.
Music video of the year went to Allison Russell's "Demons," directed by fellow Montrealer Ethan Tobman. Russell accepted on his behalf
Toronto DJ and producer Bambii's "Infinity Club" was named electronic album of the year.
"I'm just a sum of all the communities I've traversed," the second-generation Caribbean DJ said after her win.
"Being around young people, queer people, trans people. It's not only (artists) ... it's the people who consume and understand art ... that have inspired my sound. Just regular people around me that are in my music, their stories are in my music."
The Junos industry ceremony is a precursor to Sunday's televised CBC broadcast, which Nelly Furtado will host. That's where several marquee awards will be handed out, including fan choice and album of the year.
Sunday's show will also celebrate this year's Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee, rapper Maestro Fresh Wes, and Halifax native Elliot Page will present Tegan and Sara with the humanitarian award for their work supporting LGBTQ2S+ youth.
