The Perfect Itinerary for Shirakawa-go, Takayama, Kanazawa & Nagoya (2023 Update)

September 24, 2023 by Bino 18 Comments

One of the main touristic regions in Japan covers the central region encompassing Kanazawa down to Nagoya. In between, there are the charming towns such as the UNESCO-listed Shirakawa-go and Takayama. This itinerary provides a guide in how to cover these places in 4 days/3 nights – the minimum duration in my opinion if you are exploring these places. The towns stated here are covered by the JR Takayama-Hokuriku Area Pass .

For suggested things to do in Tokyo, check out my Tokyo itinerary

Table of Contents

Day 1 – Kanazawa

You can start your trip in either place. In my case, I started in Kanazawa as I took the shinkansen or bullet train from Tokyo. It’s also very much feasible to start the trip in Nagoya.

nagoya road trip

kanazawa station

If you are starting your trip in Kanazawa, you would probably be entering the city via its train station. The Kanazawa Train Station is an attraction in its own right, incorporating classical elements such as a traditional temple construct but using glass and steel as well as a twirling wooden pattern for a futuristic effect. If you are visiting Shirakawa-go as well, it is worth noting that bus tickets can be purchased here. If you are feeling peckish, check out Morimori from the shopping mall next door for some cheap conveyor belt sushi. Alternatively,  Menyataiga (6-3 Horikawamachi, open 11AM to 2:30PM, 5:30PM to 11PM daily except Monday) which is a few blocks away is well-known for its grilled miso ramen broth. Do come early if you decide to eat here as there are always long queues.

nagoya road trip

ice cream wrapped in gold foil

Where you go first depends on your time of arrival. If you arrive in the morning or early afternoon, you should start in the Higashi Chaya-gai district since most shops here close by 5pm. This is Kanazawa’s biggest and most famous geisha districts, with houses dating back to ancient times. Nowadays, the area houses a number of traditional teahouses as well as Kanazawa’s famous gold leaf store. Hakuichi (daily 9AM to 6PM) sells all sorts of gold leaf items from skin products down to its star product, the gold leaf ice cream. It is literally soft serve vanilla ice cream wrapped in 24k gold foil. Priced at roughly 900 Yen, it definitely doesn’t come cheap. I tried it myself. My verdict – the gold foil doesn’t add anything to the taste. It’s more for photos really. You’re better off saving 500 Yen and sticking to ordinary vanilla soft serve ice cream.

nagoya road trip

Another attraction that you should not miss in Kanazawa is the Kenrokuen (7AM to 6PM during spring and summer / 8AM to 5PM during autumn and winter). This is considered to be among Japan’s three most beautiful gardens. Having visited plenty of Japanese gardens myself, I would have to say that Kenrokuen is quite impressive. There is a different scene to be observed with each season, from the plum and cherry blossoms in spring, flowers in summer, autumn colors in fall and the snow-covered foliage in winter.

Heading to the Kansai Region as well? Check out this itinerary for Osaka and Kyoto

Literally translated as the “Garden of Six Sublimities,” Kenrokuen is supposedly at its best during autumn. I visited in summer and found the grounds teeming with flora. Allow for around 1.5 hours to appreciate this must-see attraction.

kanazawa castle

kanazawa castle

If time still permits, head to Kanazawa Castle . I would not call this a must-see but if you are in Kenrokuen anyway, you can conveniently walk to the castle. Entrance is free though the construct pales in comparison with Japan’s other castles.

You will soon realize that Kanazawa is not all history. The city paints its modern side through the 21st Century Art Museum and the  DT Suzuki Museum . Even those with just a passing interest in the fine arts would find the architecture in these two museums to be quite insta-worthy.

Day 2 – Shirakawa-go

shirakawa-go

shirakawa-go

Head out early in the morning for a 1 hour bus ride to Shirakawa-go. There are a number of departures from Kanazawa daily but if you want to maximize your time in the village, you might want to take the earliest bus. You can also check HERE for the bus schedules from Kanazawa to Shirakawa-go. In my case, I spent roughly 5 hours in Shirakawa-go before I took a connecting bus to my next destination: Takayama.

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Shirakawa-go does not really have a particular must-see attraction. The attraction is the village itself, replete with thatched roof houses built without using a single nail.

Does Shirakawa-go charge entrance fee?

There is no entrance fee for Shirakawa-go. You are free to visit and explore the village. However, some of the houses and museums may charge an admission fee to enter.

nagoya road trip

hoba miso at irori

Where to eat in Shirakawa-go: Irori is my restaurant of choice. Located a few steps away from the bus station, you can feast in delicious Hoba Miso which is a specialty within the Gifu Prefecture. Do note that Irori is closed for dinner from Wednesday to Friday.

You can choose to stay overnight in one of those thatched roof houses or take the bus later in the day to your next destination, Takayama.

Tip: If you do not wish to backtrack, you can do the Kanazawa-Shirakwago-Takayama OR Takayama-Shirawakago-Kanazawa route directly without returning to the town you came from. If you wish to do Shirakawa-go as a day trip, you’d be pleased to find left luggage lockers by the bus stop.

Day 3 – Takayama

Takayama is personally one of my favorite towns in Japan. You can find the second largest old town in the country here (second only to Kyoto) and there are plenty of things to see and do.

nagoya road trip

sannomachi street in takayama

Start your day at the Miyagawa Morning Market located by the riverside. It’s a slightly touristy affair but you’ll still find locals selling agricultural products alongside snacks and knick-knacks. Alternatively, the Jinya-mae Morning Market nearby is also held every morning and has a similar setup. The latter is also close to the Takayama Jinya , a beautiful building which used to be a government office.

nagoya road trip

hida beef sushi in takayama

After having your fill exploring the morning market, walk the short distance to the old town. With Sannomachi Street as the main drag, the old town here is markedly larger than the one in Kanazawa and is particularly atmospheric after sunset when most of the crowds have gone and the area evokes samurais and geishas. While here, make sure to try the Hida Beef Sushi from one of the stalls. It’s served on a thin rice cracker and makes for a good introduction to the specialty meat in the region. You will also find plenty of art galleries, shrines, ancestral homes and small museums around the area. You can enter them if you wish to. I did not and enjoyed just strolling down the age-old alleyways. Do note that most establishments in the old town close early at around 5pm.

In case you skipped Shirakawa-go on your way to Takayama, you can also check out the Hida Folk Village which features similar thatched houses. This is a bit out of the way, outside of town. If you have already been to Shirakawa-go, I wouldn’t recommend making your way here.

Day 4 – Takayama to Nagoya

nagoya road trip

Do the Higashiyama Walking Course in the morning, passing through the many temples and shrines and ending at the castle ruins. The path is around 3.5 kilometers long so allot around 2 to 3 hours – inclusive of stops. One of the notable stops is the former castle ruins located in Shiroyama Park.

After your walk, head back to town for lunch before waiting for your bus to Nagoya. I recommend Heianraku (open daily except Monday and Tuesday) which is conveniently located on the street leading to the train station if you’re coming from the city center. The owners are very friendly and they serve great ramen and curry rice.

Afterwards, head to Nagoya. You have two options from Takayama – either the train or the bus. Unless you have the JR Pass, a single ticket on the train costs around 6,000+ Yen so it’s more worthwhile to take the bus (around 2,980 Yen) which gets you to Nagoya for the same amount of time.

Nagoya does not offer much in the way of tourist attractions and I find that half a day is enough to go through the worthwhile sights there.

view of nagoya tower

view of nagoya tower

Main attractions include the Nagoya Castle and the Nagoya TV Tower . If you have an interest in cars, you can also check out the Toyota Museum . Alternatively, you can go for a walking tour of Nagoya for a quick overview.

For dinner, I heavily recommend trying Nagoya’s local dish – Hitsumabushi – grilled eel which is prepared four ways. There are some notable restaurants where you can have this dish but my pick for quality and convenience is Ibasho  (closed on Sundays and the 1st/3rd Monday of each month) which is located a few minutes walk from Nagoya TV Tower. The restaurant is situated within Nagoya’s red light district. Go early or be prepared to queue. Payment is by cash only.

Getting Around

If you are just traveling within Central Japan, you can buy the JR Takayama-Hokuriku Area Pass which can transport you between Kanazawa, Takayama and Shirakawa-go for 5 days. You can even use the pass to go between these cities and Nagoya or Osaka/Kyoto, depending on your preference.

Tips For Navigating Central Japan

  • If you are making multiple intercity trips or if your trip also includes Tokyo, consider buying a JR Hokuriku Arch Pass . A one-way bullet train ride from Tokyo to Kanazawa for example, already costs over 14,000 Yen or more than half the cost of the pass. A round-trip (plus access to the local JR city trains) exceeds the cost of the pass so it would be wise to get one if you are going to a few places around the island, especially if your trip to Central Japan involves starting/ending in cities like Tokyo.
  • If you decide to come during winter, do take note that some key areas such as the Ogimachi viewing deck at Shirakawa-go is closed whenever there is heavy snowfall so you may not get the panoramic view you envisioned.
  • For a relatively lengthy trip such as one to Central Japan, I personally would buy travel insurance as Japan also has some of the most expensive healthcare in Asia. You can compare for the best travel insurance that suits you and get exclusive discounts and even freebies when you book. If you reside in Singapore, check out Starr Travelead , one of the cheapest travel insurance. They have a promotion that comes with S$10 cash rebate that helps to offset the insurance cost. If you are based elsewhere, you can check out Worldnomads as they have quite an extensive coverage, even including personal accidents into their list of benefits.

Where to Stay in Kanazawa, Takayama and Nagoya

hotel mystays kanazawa castle

hotel mystays kanazawa castle (source: the hotel)

Kanazawa – I stayed in Hotel MyStays Kanazawa Castle . Despite the name, the hotel is actually not close to Kanazawa Castle although it’s still very convenient as it’s only an 8 minute walk to the train station. Rooms are small but comfortable with full amenities (even comes with a tub!). The hotel was also built relatively recently. Rates are usually well below $100.

Takayama – I stayed at Rickshaw Inn which is located in the city center – in between the train station and the old town. You get tatami style rooms at a very reasonable price and breakfast is optional. Alternatively, check out Hotel Wood Takayama , a traditional-style hotel located in the old town itself or if you prioritize proximity to transport links, you can consider Residence Hotel which is only a short walk from Takayama Station.

Nagoya – The Crowne Plaza ANA Nagoya is a decently priced 4-star hotel adjacent to Kanayama Station. This is also one of the top-ranked hotels in Nagoya. Otherwise, you can check out Nikko Style Nagoya with its soothing interiors and proximity to Nagoya Station.

If you can choose only one, should you stay in Kanazawa, Takayama or even Shirakawa-go?

I personally would not advise staying in Shirakawa-go as it is a quiet village with barely anything to do beyond a few hours of strolling and observing the cute houses. While it is possible to do home stays, the accommodations can be a bit rustic as well. Do note that Shirakawa-go was primarily an agricultural community before the swarms of tourists came in.

Between Kanazawa and Takayama, I would personally advise staying at least a night each in both cities but if you are really pressed for time and can choose to stay in only one place, I would advise staying in Takayama instead as there is simply much more to do here. I really can’t imagine squeezing Takayama as a day trip.

I came across your post while researching for my trip in Dec 18. Thanks for this detailed blog! : )

Im planning to spend about 5 nights is Osaka visiting the surrounding areas before heading to Takayama and the Nagoya. Im not intending to visit Kanagawa as we usually like to stay at least 2 nights in one place. What do you think of this itinerary (there are 4 of us including my 2 kids who are 9 and 12)

We only have 10 nights so we plan to allocate the time as such:

Arrive Osaka – 5 nights (visit Kyoto, Kobe, Nara) Takayama -3 nights (to visit Shirakawa-go, Hida) Depart from Nagoya – 2 nights

Hi! what did you do with your luggage as you were traversing through the different towns? thanks

August 14, 2018 at 9:46 am

I stayed overnight in both Kanazawa and Takayama. It was just Shirakawa-go that I did as a day trip. You’ll find a left luggage counter there with a minimal fee for storing your bags.

i was just thinking the same thing, left luggage counter at the bus station at shirakawa-go? cos that’s what i was plannning to do, but was wondering about the luggage thanks!

Thank you for your precise information. I’ll be doing the same exact route except the nagoya. My concern are i am taking a 7 day jr pass coz my starting point is tokyo but i’ve learned that JR does not cover takayama. And i most probably looking into travelling from kanazawa to shirakawago and to takayama by nohi bus as the travel time is shorter. Will it be a great idea and do you also skip the jr ?

January 5, 2020 at 9:22 pm

Yes, because I wanted to do Shirakawa-go as a day trip, I took bus between Kanazawa and Takayama.

Hi, wanna know if i want to do trip from Tokyo-Shirakawago-Tokyo. Where should i stay overnight? Kanazawa or Takayama? (I mean, which place better in terms of location and sightseeing). and also wanna know if you’re using Jr pass from tokyo to kanazawa by bullet train? thank you

August 21, 2018 at 10:47 am

Hi there, if you’re coming from Tokyo I would assume you’re taking the bullet train from Tokyo to Kanazawa. In this case, I’d recommend you stay in Kanazawa overnight as that is the most practical stop en route to Shirakawa-go from Tokyo. As for the train ticket, I did not get a JR pass as that was the only train ride I took during this trip. The individual train ticket was expensive but it’s still cheaper for me than buying a JR pass.

Hi there, thank you for the awesome guide! Just wondering–I’m flying into Tokyo and spending four nights there, then heading to the Kanazawa/Takayama area for three nights before going to Osaka/Miyajima/Kyoto. Would you split your time as 2 nights in Kanazawa/1 Takayama, or the other way around? I will have the JR pass, and plan on taking the bus from Kanazawa to Shirakawa to Takayama. Thank you!

Hi Bino, is Tateyama Kurobe Alphine Route around the region? We will land in Nagoya, travel to Shiragawa-go to stay over 1 night, to Kanazawa to Takayama. How can we move to Tateyama Kurobe Alphine Route from here?

This is great information! I plan on going in about a week to Japan for 11-12 days. Based on your information- the best way to get there would be from Tokyo? I was planning on visiting Hakone for a day (maybe one night) then going to Kanazawa but would prefer to go straight to Takayama and take a day trip to Shiragawa-go, is that possible? Or should I drop Hakone and spend one extra night in Takayama as I just love what it offers.

Also, is there a possibilities to go to Kyoto from Takayama or do we have to go from Kanazawa? Thank you for any info you can provide.

August 18, 2019 at 11:33 am

I did a similar trip by car last year. From Nagoya to Shirakawago and Takayama spending a night in Takayama, then to Kanazawa and spending a night there and back again to Nagoya. It is possible but 3 nights are definitely better, especially when traveling by train.

Nice review very helpful for my planning! However I just wonder how u brought your luggage along the bus while you travelled from one location to another? Is there always luggage storage compartments in buses?

December 29, 2019 at 2:30 pm

Yes there are baggage storage areas in the intercity buses.

If I take the bus from Kanazawa to Shirakawago then to Takayama, is there a time limit for me to visit Shirakawago before I continue my journey to Takayama? Do I need to buy the bus ticket in advance ?

August 9, 2023 at 8:57 am

If you want to continue your onward journey for same day, I took a photo of the bus schedule here. However this was from 5 years ago so not sure if the schedule is still the same. https://iwandered.net/shirakawa-go-travel-guide/

NAGOYA ITINERARY BLOG AND CENTRAL JAPAN ITINERARY

by thepinay solobackpacker | Feb 6, 2019 | Itinerary , Nagoya | 13 comments

So as promised, here’s my blog about Nagoya itinerary including our Central Japan travel itinerary for 5 days .  For me, we visited at the perfect time because somehow we got to experience the 4 seasons during our trip to Nagoya.

Just when I thought I’ve seen the best of Japan when I traveled to Osaka , Kyoto and Nara last year, here comes Nagoya and Central Japan , like a scene in every little girl’s childhood dream. Nagoya and Central Japan is a varied surprise, a cozy, countryside escape riddled with snow-capped hills interrupted by emerald-green rivers and speckled with cherry blossoms and rainbow-hued flowers. A historical air hangs along tree-lined avenues and traditional Japanese houses, while minimalist and stylish shops peppered with trinkets, hand-crafted Japanese souvenirs and well-styled food speak volume of its cultured spirit.

NAGOYA 10

We flew to Nagoya, Japan from Manila, Philippines via Jetstar .  You can book your flights here https://www.jetstar.com/ .  Jetstar flies 4 times weekly from Manila to Nagoya, they offer one of the cheapest airfare to Japan.

NAGOYA ITINERARY AND CENTRAL JAPAN ITINERARY: DAY 1

MAGOME 7 (22 of 1)

On our first day in Nagoya, we traveled to Magome , a well-preserved post town along Nasendo Highway , one of the highways during the Edo Period that connects Tokyo with Kyoto and other surrounding towns.

MAGOME 6 (22 of 1)

Upon arrival at Magome, we hiked up the observation deck at the top of Shukuba with a splendid view of the surroundings and the highest mountain there – Mt. Ena. Here, you can see the trail to the neighboring Tsumago which is about 8 kilometers away and can be reached on foot for about 2.5 hours.

MAGOME 2 (22 of 1)

The cobbled street of Magome is fringed by traditional Japanese houses dating back to the Edo Period. Some of these houses were transformed into historic inns ( hatago ), souvenir shops, wooden craft shop, noodle restaurants and confectionary shops.

NAGOYA 13

After our Magome Walking Tour , we headed to Matsumoto.  This charming city in Nagano Prefecture is home to one of Japan’s most beautiful castle – the Matsumoto Castle , a National Treasure.  We toured inside the massive Matsumoto Castle that still has its original wooden donjons.  We also climbed the 6 towers with a scenic view of the South Alps nearby.

NAGOYA 14

After the castle tour, we did a walking tour of Matsumoto City peppered with sake breweries, restaurants and Japanese inns.  From Matsumoto Castle, we walked for about 5 minutes towards Nawate Dori Street , popularly known as Frog Street , a small shopping street beside the Metoba River that exudes an atmosphere of Matsumoto’s castle town period.  Nearby tourists can find the Yohashira Shrine and a small frog shrine.  Nawate Dori Street was once a sleepy street where no horses or carts are allowed to pass through, until the shrine keepers started making ways to attract tourists by offering different forms of entertainment, eventually locals started setting up shops along Nawate Street.  Unfortunately, a strong storm hit the street sometime in 1959, flooding the street and making the river murky.  Despite the community’s effort to restore the Menoba River , it remained dirty, and the once lively Kajika frogs thriving here vanished.  In order to revive the bustling Nawate Street, the locals turned the street into a frog-themed street.

NAGOYA 16

Though Matsumoto can be explored by foot – because this charming city is sprawling –  it’s recommended to ride the town buses with three loops: North, South and East Loop to explore more tourist attractions sprinkled around Matsumoto.   Bus fare is JPY 200 / PHP 88.43 / USD 1.77.  Tourists can also purchase a 1 day bus pass for only JPY 500 / PHP 221 / USD 4.44.

NAGOYA ITINERARY AND CENTRAL JAPAN ITINERARY: DAY 2

ALPINE ROUTE 3

Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is my favorite destination during our Nagoya and Central Japan trip.   Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route connects Toyoma City with Omachi Town.  It’s one of the most scenic attractions I’ve seen in Japan, offering a surreal view of the Tateyama Mountain Range.  Other attractions here include the Kurobe Dam , the largest dam in Japan and the Snow Wall which could reach up to 20 meters high.  The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route Snow Wall is open from April 15 to June 22.

NAGOYA ITINERARY AND CENTRAL JAPAN ITINERARY:  DAY 3

SHIRIKAWAGO 30

Shirikawago , a UNESCO World Heritage situated in Gifu known for its gassho styled houses. Basically, the roofs of the houses sprinkled around Shirikawago represent “hands in prayer”.  Interestingly, to be able to build this distinct roof, the residents help each other, a cooperation system known as “Yui”.

Shirikawago is flocked by tourists during winter, when the gassho houses are covered with snow and the village lights up at nightfall.  The illumination is like watching a real-life Christmas village.  But spring is also a good time to visit as some houses are fringed by cherry blossoms and the mountain range that clads the village is peppered with colorful trees.

The best spot to watch Shirikawago Village is from Shiroyama Viewpoint .  We visited during spring, and the view from here is still mesmeric.  The quaint village is hemmed in by soaring massif clad with pastel-colored trees.  While the fog adds for more drama to the already neck-swiveling scenery.

HOW TO GET TO SHIRAKAWA-GO FROM TOKYO, OSAKA, NAGOYA, AND TAKAYAMA

shirikawago 2 (22 of 1)

One of the traditional houses we visited in Shirikawago Village is the Wada House, one of the biggest houses in the community that is a partly a museum.   According to the guide, it took about 4 years to construct Wada House, which is actually made up of silk worm feces, grass, human urine and dirt.  The main room with wooden floors is spacious and still houses the family shrine.  There were also some age-old porcelains on display here.  Meanwhile, on the second floor, equipment for farming and silk processing are stored.  This area is said to be used for silk processing.  The windows here open up to amazing views of the village.

In the afternoon, our group headed to Takayama , also Hida-Takayama, for our next tour.  Takayama is one of the pleasantly-preserved old towns in Central Honshu that exhibits a laid-back vibe.  This pristinely preserved 17th century town hemmed in by Japan Alps is brimming with temples, galleries, traditional inns, museums and plus a stunning river fringed by cherry blossoms to boot.

NAGOYA ITINERARY AND CENTRAL JAPAN ITINERARY: DAY 4

NAGOYA 37

On our 4 th day, we explored Gujo City, a city famed for its clean canals and waterways used for laundry and even washing rice.  Residents here take pride in Gujo’s drinking water that can be sourced from every well and valve in town.  We passed by an age-old shop that sells sake and the owner was kind enough to give us spring water flowing through the tap in front of his store.

NAGOYA 41

After our Gujo City Walking Tour, we paid a quick visit to Jazz Dream Nagashima , one of the biggest outlet malls in Japan.  So if you love to shop for branded apparels and gears while traveling, this is the place to be.

NAGOYA 33

But perhaps one of the most exciting part of our Central Japan trip is a visit to Nabano no Sato on Nagashima, Kuwana City for its Winter Illumination and Tulips Field.  The park is literally overflowing with flowers, their colors so trippy like they just came out of a Crayola box!

NAGOYA 36

Hailed as one of Japan’s most extravagant light display, Nabano no Sato made me teary-eyed.  This place is oozing with over 8 million LED lights illuminating in the flower park. Attractions here include the surreal light tunnel that is made to look like fall foliage, the animated light show, the observation deck and the tulip field.  This year’s display, which will run until May 7 only, is entitled the “Beauty of Mother Nature”, the biggest winter illumination they’ve done so far.

NAGOYA ITINERARY AND CENTRAL JAPAN ITINERARY: DAY 5

NAGOYA 47

We spent our last day in Central Japan touring Nagoya City and its handful of attractions.  You can explore the top attractions here in a day or two. Nagoya is the birthplace of Toyoto, Mitsubishi and Honda.  Having said that, we visited the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry that showcases the humble beginnings of the company started by Sakichi Toyoda, from loom weaving to the manufacture of cars.

We failed to visit Nagoya Castle during our trip due to time constraint, but if you plan to explore Nagoya’s top attractions, pay a visit here. Nagoya Castle was constructed in 1612 upon the orders of Ieyasu Togukawa.

NAGOYA 46

SCMAGLEV and Railway Park is also worth a visit while in Nagoya, this place is the railway museum of Central Japan Railways.  Here, visitors can get to see a collection of trains and get to learn how they function as well as their maintenance.

That’s it! Hope this Nagoya sample itinerary will help you plan your trip to Nagoya, Japan soon.

I feel like I can't keep up with Manila anymore. Despite living here for more than half of my life. Now I feel like a lost soul trying to survive in a place I barely know. I like that there's a lot of things to do here and there's a lot of distractions. But I feel heavy, like I don't know what to do here anymore. Or maybe I need to explore more new places. Maybe I need more time to process everything. Or maybe there's a different place for me. Maybe I'm just tired of everything. I just don't know anymore.

I love this post – lots of information that I can take for my trip to Nagoya, but it is annoying I cannot copy and paste places that spark my interest for my own itinerary. I guess you have your reasons 🙂

Hi! Thank you for your very informative article. May I ask how you got home from Nagoya, since it looks like there is no Jetstar heading to Phils when I check Oct 2018 flights. Salamat

There is, search directly sa website nila. jetstar.com I just saw flights from Nagoya to Manila Wednesday and Friday (Oct 24 -26) you can check other dates on Wed and Friday. For Manila to Nagoys, check dates that fall on Monday, Tues, Thurs and Saturday. They’re quite expensive though

Nagoya Itinerary: Things to Do + Travel Tips

Conveniently located between Tokyo and the Kyoto/Osaka area, Nagoya makes for a perfect stopover destination. Not only is it the capital of the Aichi prefecture, but its also the 4th largest city in Japan. If you’re looking for things to do or how to get there, check out this Nagoya Itinerary!

Is Nagoya Worth Visiting? For How Long?

Top things to do in nagoya, other things to do in nagoya, getting to nagoya from kyoto, getting to nagoya from tokyo.

  • Getting Around Nagoya

To be 100% honest, there are only a few scenarios where I believe Nagoya would be worth visiting:

  • Your first visit to Japan is more than 2 weeks long
  • This isn’t your first trip to Japan and you’ve already been to the big cities like Tokyo , Kyoto , Osaka , and Hiroshima
  • You’re looking for off the beaten path (less touristy) destinations

For those visiting Japan for the first time, there are just so many other places I would recommend that I feel would be better for truly getting immersed in Japan and its culture. This is especially true if time in Japan is limited.

However, due to Nagoya’s convenient location between Tokyo and Kyoto/Osaka, it makes for a great stopover city. If you have the extra time in your itinerary, then it’s definitely worth spending a half a day to a day in Nagoya.

Nagoya Castle

Nagoya Castle is one of the castles in Japan that have been rebuilt. This means that, while the outside still looks like the traditional Japanese castle, the inside looks more like a modern museum. Inside they have all sorts of samurai equipment, statues, old documents, and more on display.

Also inside the Nagoya castle gates is Honmaru palace. It’s doesn’t cost anything extra and it’s definitely worth exploring. The building is made of really fine wood, and the sliding doors are decorated with exquisite paintings.

Tokugawa Garden

If you’ve visited some of the parks and gardens in Tokyo, Tokugawa Garden will likely pale in comparison as it is much smaller and unassuming. However, it’s still a nice place to visit. It has one big pond, and on the opposite side of the pond is a traditional style building which you can rent out for events. There is also a small path that allows you to stroll around the pond.

Osu Kannon Dori

On the way to Osu Kannon Temple is Osu Kannon Dori, a popular shopping street. Here, you’ll find all sorts of food, clothes, accessories, and Japanese souvenirs. Even better is that many of the shops along Osu Kannon Dori and the surrounding streets are mom and pop shops. By shopping here, you’re supporting the local community. However, also be prepared for the fact that many of them speak very limited English.

Osu Kannon Temple

After making your way down, Osu Kannon Dori, you’ll eventually arrive at Osu Kannon Temple. The temple is typically lively with many people. Plus the many flag poles that surround the temple give the place a festive feel.

When I was at Osu Kannon temple, there was a guy with some bird seed in front of the temple, and he must have been surrounded by more than 50 pigeons. They all wanted the food so badly that they were actually flying onto his arm. It was pretty amusing to watch.

If you’ve got more than half a day in Nagoya, you can also check out these activities:

  • Legoland Japan
  • Furoshiki Traditional Japanese Wrapping Class
  • Kirin Brewery Tour
  • Maidreamin Maid Cafe
  • Laguna Ten Bosch Resort

Transportation

That fastest way to get to Nagoya from Kyoto is by taking the shinkansen (bullet train). It only takes about half an hour to get there, but if you don’t have the Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass), it will cost about ¥5,800.

The cheaper (but slower) option for getting to Nagoya from Kyoto is by highway bus. With the Willer Express buses, it takes approximately 2 and a half hours to get to Nagoya (including stops), costs about ¥3,000.

That fastest way to get to Nagoya from Tokyo is by taking the shinkansen (bullet train). It only takes about 2 hours to get there, but if you don’t have the Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass), it will cost about ¥10,890.

The cheaper (but slower) option for getting to Nagoya from Tokyo is by highway bus. When I went to Nagoya, I didn’t have the JR pass, so I chose this option and booked a ticket with Willer Express . It takes approximately 5 and a half hours to get to Nagoya (including stops), but was only about ¥4,000. Personally, I thought it was a great way to see the more country side of Japan.

Getting Around Nagoya (Nagoya One Day Pass)

While the JR Pass is useful for getting to Nagoya, it unfortunately doesn’t help much when trying to get around the city. The easiest way to get between the top attractions in Nagoya is by local bus and/or subway.

However, there is something called the Nagoya One Day Pass (or 1-Day Tickets). Depending on the type of pass, it allows you to ride the bus or subway an unlimited amount of times in a day for one flat fee. One Day Passes range from ¥500 to ¥850.

If you were to visit all of the top things to do in Nagoya, your travel itinerary for the day might look something like this:

  • Nagoya Station -> Nagoya Castle (¥210)
  • Nagoya Castle -> Tokugawa Garden (¥210)
  • Tokugawa Garden -> Osu Kannon (¥410)
  • Osu Kannon -> Nagoya Station (¥200)

That’s a total of ¥1,030, meaning the one day pass could save you ¥180 to ¥530.

CENTRAL JAPAN ITINERARY: 5 Days in Nagoya, Shirakawago, Kanazawa & More!

CENTRAL JAPAN ITINERARY: 5 Days in Nagoya, Shirakawago, Kanazawa & More!

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

Central Japan is one of the richest and most diverse regions in Japan in terms of landscapes, cuisine and activities for tourists. Here you’ll find some of the most breathtaking destinations in the country, from the bustling city of Nagoya to the UNESCO-recognized Shirakawago to the dinosaur-happy Fukui.

Also called Chubu Region, it has so much to offer to travelers that even a week isn’t enough. But if you only have five days, you can still visit some of the highlights!

nagoya road trip

Tip! Consider availing of the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass . This will give you five days of unlimited rides on designated JR local and limited express train, the Hokuriku Shinkansen, and buses within the route in the Central Region.

Here is a sample itinerary to help you plan your next trip to Central Japan and make the most out of your Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass. You may also check some of their highlight spots here !

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

This itinerary assumes you’re entering Central Japan via Nagoya. If you’re arriving in the early morning, you can check leave your bags at a locker at Nagoya Station and start exploring.

If you’re arriving in the afternoon or evening, it’s best to allot a Day 0 and spend a night at a hotel. Ideally, pick a hotel near Nagoya Station because it’s the most convenient location. Check in to your hotel and visit other Nagoya attractions not listed in this post before following this itinerary.

Feel free to skip something or make adjustments if you feel like the timing is off. Then follow this itinerary the next day.

Nagoya TV Tower

nagoya road trip

Kick off your 5-day Central Japan adventure at the Nagoya TV Tower . It is only 10 minutes by subway from Nagoya Station and a few minutes from Oasis 21. Climb to the top for a 360-degree panoramic view of the city (¥900), which is considered of the best night views in the country.

A symbol of hope, the TV Tower was built in 1954 almost a decade after World War II, which left the city devastated after a series of air raids. It is believed to be the first and oldest TV transmission tower in the Japan. It remains operational to this day but also doubles as a tourist spot. Aside from the view, you’ll also find a lot of dining and shopping options.

JR Gate Tower Mall

nagoya road trip

The JR Nagoya Takashiyama Gate Tower Mall is a massive shopping mall where you’ll find tons of fashion, cosmetic and lifestyle products. In case you’re still hungry (big appetite, huh), you can also find a few cafes and restaurants offering sandwiches and pastries here.

If you’re more interested in gadgets and electronics, then proceed to the 9th and 10th floor which houses a branch of Bic Camera. It is a popular chain of super stores in Japan. You’ll find much more than cameras here — from games to laptops to accessories.

If clothes are what you want to shop for, you can find Uniqlo and GU one floor up.

Don’t forget to take advantage of the tax-free incentive if your total purchase exceeds the set amount, usually ¥5000. You’ll need your passport to avail of it.

Nagoya-meshi (Kishimen)

nagoya road trip

Exit the JR Gate Tower Mall and cross over to the JR Nagoya Station. Nope, you’ll not board the train right away because it’s time for lunch!

Outside of Japan, Nagoya isn’t particularly well-known for its cuisine but it does offer several gastronomic treats! One of them is kishimen, a Nagoya specialty dish known for its hirauchi (flattened) noodles made with wheat flour, water, and salt.

There are many ways to prepare and highlight kishimen, but the most popular and most traditional is as miso stewed udon. You can also enjoy it with pasta sauce or in hot soup.

Cafe Gentiane (Piyorin)

nagoya road trip

Ready for dessert? After a hearty bowl of kishimen, end the meal by devouring cute but totally edible chicks. Don’t worry, they’re not real chicks but chick-shaped cakes called Piyorin. These delectable cakes are handmade using Nagoya Cochin eggs and are filled with yummy pudding.

You can enjoy Piyorin cakes at Cafe Gentiane, inside the JR Nagoya Station. Price ¥380.

Feeling luxurious? Consider staying at these hotels!

nagoya road trip

If spending a night in Nagoya: Nagoya Marriott Associa Hotel. This hotel is located right above Nagoya Station. Its convenient location makes it the best jump-off point for a five-day trip. Their rooms offer excellent view of the city.

If going straight to Takayama: Hodakaso Yamano Hotel. This ryokan in the middle of the mountains has an outdoor hot spring bath in the woods! You’ll be surrounded by nature while you enjoy the bath. To reach the hot spring bath, take a cable car and go to the ground. Another thing you shouldn’t miss is the dinner with Hida beef.

Shinhotaka Ropeway

nagoya road trip

Start your day with the scenic views from the Shintohaka Ropeway, the only-double decker ropeway in Japan. From the hotel, ride the Nohi Bus directly to the ropeway. In the upper station (Nishihotakaguchi Station) is a rooftop observatory deck at an altitude of over 2,156 meters.

While the surrounding highlands are pretty year-round, the Japanese Alps look more magical in winter when its peaks and valleys are blanketed in snow!

Takayama Ramen

nagoya road trip

After taking in all the gorgeous views from Shinhotaka Ropeway, return to Takayama for lunch and fill your face with Chuka Soba . Locally called Takayama Ramen , its base is a delicious mix of bones, vegetables, and dried bonito flakes called katsuobushi, made even tastier with miso and soy sauce. The soba noodles are handmade and are prepared differently at each restaurant. Usual toppings include char siu and raw eggs.

Takayama Historical District

nagoya road trip

Once you’ve emptied a bowl into your belly, board the Hida Limited Expresss train to Takayama City , one of the most charming cities in the region. Takayama is best known for beautifully preserved dark wood and white-washed buildings from the 1600s that house shops, sake breweries, and cafes.

In between your stroll, you can make a stop to have a piece of Hida Beef Nigiri or Hida Beef skewers .

nagoya road trip

This is something you shouldn’t miss when in Central Japan! Hida Beef is a Kuroge Wagyu breed of cattle raised in Gifu prefecture. It is well-known for its high quality, characterized by its beautiful marbling, smooth texture, and, of course, unforgettable taste. It is widely regarded as one of the best beef brands in the country.

Sounds pricey? Not at all! Yes, Kuroge wagyu is high-class, but it is more affordable than other beef brands! In Takayama, you can get a Hida beef croquette for as low as ¥250.

Shirakawa-go

nagoya road trip

One of the most well-known destinatiosn in Central Japan, Shirakawa-go is a great addition to your itinerary. From Takayama Station, take the Nohi bus direct to Shirakawa-go. This is the best route, hence it is usually sold out, especially during winter. It’s best to to reserve tickets in advance.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Shirakawa-go is best known for its gassho-zukuri farmhouses. These iconic traditional houses can withstand heavy snowfall because their roofs were built at an angle that lets snow to slide down easily. Although it is most picturesque in winter, Shirakawa-go is a year-round destination, with a different charm each season.

The best view of the whole village can be enjoyed from an observation deck, accessible after a 25-minute walk up the mountain or a five-minute shuttle ride. (Fare: ¥200, one-way)

Note: If you have big luggage in tow, store it at one of the the coin lockers or at the luggage room at Shirakawago bus terminal.

Takaoka City

After a scenic stroll around Shirakawa-go, it’s time to head to another city by taking the World Heritage Bus. Your next stop — Takaoka City, the hometown of the creator of the well-loved anime character Doraemon ! Here, you’ll find a number of places that are related to the animated characters.

Doraemon Tram

nagoya road trip

Don’t pass up an opportunity to get onboard the Doaremon Tram. If you’re like me who grew up watching Doraemon on TV, this ride will be something you’ll never forget.

Where to go? Take the Doraemon Tram to where you’ll be having dinner. What’s on the menu? Sushi!

Toyama Bay Sushi (Dinner)

nagoya road trip

Situated along the bay, Toyama is blessed with fresh ocean bounty! Whatever type of seafood you’re craving, you can enjoy it fresh from the sea at one of the city’s countless restaurants. One of them is Iki-zushi 氷見寿司, a local favorite!

What to try at Iki-zushi? A lot! But don’t miss the white shrimp (Shiro-ebi), which is smaller and sweeter than the regular shrimps we’re used to.

Shogawa Gorge, Toyama

It’s DAY 3! What’s in store for you today? Well, let’s start with a scenic morning cruise!

nagoya road trip

From Toyama Station, ride a bus to Shogawa Gorge, where you can enjoy an hour-long boat cruise that will bombard you with spectacular scenery.(¥2,800). This sightseeing cruise operates between Komaki Dam and Omaki Onsen.

What’s your favorite season? Never mind. Whatever it is, you’ll find Shogawa Gorge stunning. It has a very different but always magnificent appeal each season. In winter, it’s clad in snow. In spring, it’s naturally decorated with colorful blossoms. In summer, the verdant mountains become a perfect backdrop. In autumn, the place turns vibrant with all shades of red and orange.

Zuiryuji Temple

nagoya road trip

After an hour on the boat, it’s time to head back to Takaoka City for some quiet time at the temple.

Enter Zuiryuji Temple, a designated National Treasure and is one of Central Japan’s cultural gems. Its main gate, main hall, and Dharma hall form a line while the temple buildings were built on either side, creating a beautiful symmetry, linked by roofed passageways.

When you get hungry, pay a visit to Yasuragi-an , a popular restaurant serving seasonal dishes.

Doraemon Postbox

nagoya road trip

After lunch, catch the bus to Takoaka Station, where you’ll be greeted by a massive copper Doraemon postbox.

Takaoka City is the birthplace of Fujiko F. Fujio, the creator of Doraemon, so this postbox has become an icon of the city. Before you go to the next stop, purchase a postcard and drop them here. Yes, the Doraemon Postbox is not just a decoration; it is, in fact, a functioning postbox. The postcards you send will be stamped with a commemorative Doraemon postmark.

Handcraft Experience at Nousaku Factory, Takaoka City

Head back to your hotel to pick up your luggage and hail a cab to your next stop — Nousaku Factory.

Historically, Takaoka City is a center of metal casting industry, which remains flourishing to this day. At Nousaku Factory, you can see their extensive collections. But if you want to be more immersed, join a workshop at the the Nousaku Lab. By the end of the session, you’ll be creating your very own tin item.

Kanazawa Station, Tsuzumi Gate

nagoya road trip

Head over to Shin Takaoka station and take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Kanazawa City, the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture.

When you emerge from the station, the giant Tsuzumi Gate will be greeting you first. This monument represents the drums that are played in Noh Theater and is a symbol of the city. It blends traditional wooden design with contemporary style.

nagoya road trip

Situated close to the station is Kagaya, a local favorite serving Ozen set, created with seasonal ingredients, many of which are unique to the city or prefecture. They also have other items on the menu including sushi, miso soup and other traditional Japanese dishes.

Where to Stay in Kanazawa: Hotel Wing International Premium Kanazawa Ekimae. It’s a fairly new hotel with stylish design, located near Kanazawa Ekimae.

It’s Day 4! Time flies when you’re having fun, indeed!

Today is all about Kanazawa! There’s a lot to see and enjoy in this great city, but it’s best known for its well-preserved Edo-era districts, art museums, and tranquil gardens. This old castle town is the perfect marriage of old and new, traditional and modern!

Kanazawa Castle, Nezumitamon Gate and Nezumitamon Bridge

nagoya road trip

Kanazawa Castle stands proudly in the middle of the vast grounds that also feature traditional gates, a serene garden, and a central pond. It was the seat of power of the Maeda Clan back in the day. Back then, this clan’s domain was one of the biggest and wealthiest, second only to the Tokugawa possessions, The castle was used as a military base from the late 1500s up until the end of the Edo Period.

Over the centuries, it became home to the army during the war and a campus of the Kanazawa University for a time. It has undergone many restorations, the most prominent of which are those of the Nezumitamon Gate and Nezumitamon Bridge on the west side in July 2020.

Gyokusen’an Rest House

nagoya road trip

Within the Kanazawa Castle grounds is a teahouse with a great view of the Gyokusen’inmaru Garden. It’s called the Gyokusen’an Rest House. If you’re tired of walking around the spacious complex, you can take some rest and enjoy a cup of tea here. Best enjoyed with wagashi, traditional Japanese confectionery.

Kenrokuen Garden

nagoya road trip

Gyokusen’inmaru isn’t the only beautiful garden in this part of the city. When you come out via Ishikawa Gate, you’ll find the Kenrokuen Garden, recognized as one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan.

Back in the day, this was the outer garden of the castle. Here, you;ll find all sorts of flowering trees that make up postcard-worthy scenes especially in winter when it features yukitsuri. This snow-hanging method protects the branches of pine trees from breaking.

Omicho Market

nagoya road trip

From Kenrokuen Garden, go on a leisurely 10-minute stroll to Omicho Market, the biggest fresh food market in the city. This is your lunch stop!

Like Tokyo’s Tsukiji Market, Omicho Market is made up of hundreds of food stalls and restaurants offering seafood products. If you’re visiting in winter, don’t leave without trying snow crabs and sweet shrimps, which are local specialties.

Higashi Chaya District

It’s time to shoot something for the ‘gram!

nagoya road trip

Widely regarded as one of the city’s biggest geisha centers, Higashi Chaya District is your last stop for today. Visitors may choose to don a kimono as they walk around traditional teahouses and take IG-worthy pics!

And oh, if you haven’t enjoyed a “gold ice cream” by now, this would be a good place to try. It’s a soft-serve ice cream with gold leaf. Yes, gold leaf, which is one of the main products of the city.

Awara Onsen

nagoya road trip

After your visit to Higashi Chaya district, get your bags then catch the Thunderbird limited express train to Awara Onsen in Fukui Prefecture. Then check in at your next hotel.

Welcome to Awara Onsen! Here, you’ll find numerous foot bath facilities of various types and temperatures. Fronting the foot bath building is the Yataimura Yukemuri Yokocho, composed of food shops where you can grab quick dinner.

Where to Stay: Awara Onsen Matsuya Sensen. This ryokan is very close to the FREE public foot bath nearby. It is located in front of Awara Yunomachi station. You can also search for “Ashiyu” on Google Maps to find the place.

Fukui Station

Are you ready for another amazing destination?

Awara Onsen isn’t the only awesome tourist destination in Fukui Prefecture. Also worth your time is Katsuyama City, the most prominent dinosaur fossil discovery site in Japan.

nagoya road trip

To get to our next stop, catch the shuttle bus and then the train on Hokuriku Main Line to go back to Fukui Station. Take the West Exit and you will be welcomed by a 10-meter-tall model of Fukuititan, one of the dinosaurs found in the prefecture. Other models you can find around the station are Fukuiraptor and Fukuisaurus.

Dinosaur Museum, Fukui

nagoya road trip

Your dino-day doesn’t end at the station. To learn more about the dinosaurs discovered here, spend some time at the Fukui Prefecture Dinosaur Museum, hailed as one of the best dinosaur museums in the world, which is just an hour and a half away.

Note: Currently, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, visitors who reserve a ticket beforehand are allowed to enter.

nagoya road trip

If you get hungry exploring the museum or you simply want to try something unique, make a stop at this restaurant. Kids and kids-at-heart will love the dinosaur figures that they incorporate in their desserts!

Life's Tiny Miracles

Award-winning singapore lifestyle & travel blog, diy nagoya japan with kids – itinerary and recommendations.

October 13, 2022 by Angie. S Leave a Comment

We have been to Japan multiple times and have covered the ‘major’ cities, including the three major amusement parks (Click here for our post on our itineraries and experiences to 16 countries including Japan).

nagoya road trip

Legoland Japan, really takes the cake with some seriously good activities.

On our last trip, we decided to visit Nagoya before going to Hokkaido, as we wanted to discover a new city other than Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.

nagoya road trip

We were so thrilled to find Autumn blooms at Nabana-No-Sato!

We fell in love with Nagoya almost immediately. It is such an underrated Japanese city filled with world-class attractions such as Legoland Nagoya and the Train Museum which are fantastic for families. The flower park at Nabana-No-Sato is Japan’s most spectacular Winter Illumination. It’s so magical to see it in person.

nagoya road trip

One of our highlights on the trip: Being inside the cockpit of an actual Shinkansen.

Here’s a snapshot of our 6D5N Winter Itinerary to Nagoya:

Here are what we think on the attractions and hotels:

Nagoya JR Gate Tower Hotel:

This is a clean and centralized city hotel. The location of the hotel is superb as it sits on top of the central hub for the trains, shinkansen as well as the buses. This enabled us to catch the train in from the Tokyo Haneda Airport as well as catch the Shinkansen and buses to the all attractions in Nagoya conveniently.

nagoya road trip

The rooms, like most Japanese city hotels, can be a tad small for a family of 4 but it’s quite manageable since we only use the room to freshen up and sleep after a long day of sight-seeing.

nagoya road trip

Aside from its convenience, there are lots of eateries and shops below.  The hotel also offers a birds’ eye view of the meandering lines of the many railway tracks leading into Nagoya. Perfect for the kids, like Buddy, who love to spot trains!

nagoya road trip

Legoland Japan and Sea Life Nagoya. ( https://www.legoland.jp/en/ )

Located within stone’s throw of each other, Sea Life Nagoya and Japan’s only Legoland are worthy reasons why a visit to Nagoya should be on the cards for families.

nagoya road trip

Flying Ninjago – This is one ride families should not miss! Seriously good!

nagoya road trip

Taking a Lego Submarine ride! Fun!

nagoya road trip

For most kids, the only Legoland we have experienced would be the one across the causeway in Johor Bahru, Malaysia.  Legoland Nagoya Japan offers a whole new experience including a fun day in a theme park in winter climate, which is well, cool in every sense of the word!

nagoya road trip

Fancy being underwater and watching sea life swim around Lego pieces.

nagoya road trip

While some rides and experiences are similar to the one in Malaysia (E.g., Driving school, Mini Land, The Dragon and Dragon’s Apprentice etc.), the other ‘Must-Do’ rides we recommend would be Submarine Adventure, Cat Cloud Busters, the awesome Flying Ninjago plus the thrilling Llyod’s Spinjitsu Spinners.  Try also to catch the Ninjago Live Action Show and visit the Lego Factory to see how Lego bricks are ‘made’!

nagoya road trip

This ride turned us topsy-turvy 360 degrees. Fun!

nagoya road trip

Stepping into a Lego Factory to see how the pieces are being made.

nagoya road trip

Sea Life Nagoya ( https://www.legoland.jp/en/resort-guide/sealife-nagoya/ )

Sea Life Nagoya is just across Legoland Japan and can be included in the same day as Legoland visit.  Its entrance pale in significance to Legoland’s grand entrance but don’t let that humble entrance fool you.

nagoya road trip

Hands on feeding a Stingray.

Once inside, Japan’s ‘hands-on aquarium’ lets visitors ‘see touch and learn’ about sea life. Although not as sprawling as Singapore’s SEA Aquarium, it features unique and diverse range of sea creatures found in Japan!

nagoya road trip

Sea Life Nagoya should be included in your trips to Legoland Japan.

We really had fun at both Legoland and Sea Life Nagoya.  To maximize your day, it’s good that tickets can be bought via KLOOK online, arrive early at Legoland and be strategic on the rides to take before leaving about 3pm to experience Sea Life Nagoya till it closes at 5:30pm.

nagoya road trip

UNESCO Heritage Site – Shirakawago and Takayama ( https://www.vill.shirakawa.lg.jp/en/ )

I really don’t have enough adjectives in my limited lexicon to describe the beauty of Shirakawago and Takayama especially in Winter.

nagoya road trip

Step back in time to the magical Shirakawago.

A visit there is akin to taking a step back in time into an old Japanese art piece depicting a village from the Edo era.  This World Heritage Site is famous for its thatched roof houses that span back nearly 300 years to the EDO period. We joined a full day trip which brought us to Takayama and Shirakawa-go . En-route to the village by comfortable coach, we enjoyed spectacular scenery embellished by fallen snow.

nagoya road trip

As part of the experience, we took a the walk through Takayama village. One could almost imagine seeing Samurais walking along the roads. Imagine the snow falling slowly accompanied by the soundtrack from a Studio Gibli anime!

nagoya road trip

Takayama is so enchanting.

nagoya road trip

Hida beef sashimi. Melts in your mouth. Oishi!

Do note that you would need to purchase tickets beforehand to visit the medieval houses. As you walk around the village, do taste the local delicacies.  Hida Beef, eaten raw or torched, on top of sushi rice, are delectable. A visit to Takayama is similar to a visit to Kyoto only perhaps slightly less crowded.

nagoya road trip

Like a scene out from a calendar.

SCMAGLEV and Railway Park Museum ( https://museum.jr-central.co.jp/en/ )

This museum sits right up there as one of our most loved museums in all our 16-country travels. It is THAT excellent. With its LIFE- sized carriages from every Shinkansen in Japan’s history as well as life-sized models of the notable trains in Japan’s history (E.g., The Emperor’s Train), this museum is mind-blowing and can evoke the inner child within every one of us.

nagoya road trip

We couldn’t believe our eyes – Life sized Shinkansen from every era is here. Amazing!

nagoya road trip

This place features some historic trains as well. Yes, the ACTUAL trains.

nagoya road trip

Every Shinkansen across the generation has a life-size model here.

In addition to seeing the trains, we can walk into them, take photos, and read about the science and history behind these marvelous engines. There are opportunities for you to learn a bit more about the Magnetic Levitation Science (hence the name ‘MAGLEV’) behind how the Shinkansen works.

nagoya road trip

Someone’s imagination is going at over 300 km/h…’piloting’ the Shinkansen.

nagoya road trip

“Hello Mommy and Daddy, can we lead you to your seats?” – The kids got to play dress-up in an actual Shinkansen

nagoya road trip

The kids having a hands-on at the Shinkansen simulator. Cool!

We spent almost an entire day there and felt that we could easily have spent another day more!  Note that for some experiences such as ‘driving’ the virtual Shinkansen, you’d need to book early when visiting the museum.  In fact, do that first when you enter the museum to avoid disappointment.

nagoya road trip

Seeing real-life Shinkansen up close. What a treat!

nagoya road trip

The museum does have a small cafeteria where you could catch lunch. We hope that they still would give the paper train box when one orders the kid’s menu if so, it’s one nice souvenir to take home.

nagoya road trip

This is one of the BEST museums we have ever visited (and we’ve been to quite a few worldwide!)

Nabana-No-Sato Winter Illumination Park ( https://www.nagashima-onsen.co.jp/nabana/index.html )

Reputed to have Japan’s most impressive Winter Illumination, this ‘flower park’ or some sites call it a nursery, is home to the most impressive blooms in Japan.  Think Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay except bigger and prettier.

nagoya road trip

We were very blessed that we caught some late Autumn blooms when we visited in early December. The weather was pleasant, and we enjoyed a cool Autumn’s walk for about 2 hours where we took beautiful family portraits against the stunning Autumn colours.

nagoya road trip

The park has some good eateries serving good Japanese food.  One shouldn’t also miss the ride on the Island Fuji Observatory which offers a 360 view of the huge park.  It is especially stunning at night with seeing the illumination in its full glory.  Do go early to queue for the experience.

nagoya road trip

Here are some tips to maximize your experience at Nabana-No-Sato:

We took the mid-afternoon bus from Nagoya after returning from the Train Museum. We arrived at Nabana-No-Sato around 4pm to see the blooms before the sun sets at 5pm.  We then opted for an early dinner before queuing for the Island Fuji Observatory ride.  After the observatory, we did another walking tour of the park to take in the Winter Illumination shows. Do be warned that the crowd can swell significantly once night falls, so it is virtually impossible to take a decent photo with a ‘clean’ background.  You may want to bring a long a tripod for the night shots. Despite the crowds, it is quite a memorable experience being able to admire the huge magical wintry illumination at nightfall.

nagoya road trip

Bonus: Shibuya!

En-route back to Tokyo to catch our flight to Hokkaido, we detoured to Tokyo for one night to experience the energy of Shibuya – Japan’s famous center for youth culture.

nagoya road trip

This is SO KAWAII (Cute)!!! The kids learnt about Hedgehogs and how to care for them.

There, we walked down the mall in Harajuku experiencing their street food, souvenir shopping as well as its unique cafes – a dog café and a hedgehog café (yes, you read it right!). There were other interesting cafes including an owl café which was full when we wanted to visit.  It pays to plan early and, where possible, purchased the tickets online to secure your time slots. We pre-purchased our tickets via KLOOK and that saved us tons of time and secured us the opportunity to visit.

nagoya road trip

No visit to Shibuya would be complete without a visit to dine at the legendary Genki Sushi at Shibuya – reputed to be the first of its world-famous sushi chain store that delivers your sushi orders via toy train.  Despite having to queue for 45mins in the cold winter, we were impressed by quality of sushi plus experiencing the eclectic ambience of a modern sushi eatery.

nagoya road trip

At Genki Sushi Shibuya – The original Genki Sushi. Oishi!

With the reopening of Japan, many would throng the well-known cities but if you’re looking for something which is just as much Japan with its family-centric activities, history, food less the crowd and commercial vibes, Nagoya should be on your list. For this family who have been to Japan multiple times, we miss Nagoya and we will certainly return.

Japan’s Overnight Bus Recommendations

When it comes to traversing Japan's vast and varied landscapes, many tourists and travelers immediately think of the shinkansen (bullet trains) or domestic flights. Undoubtedly, these modes of transport offer speed and convenience, connecting major cities and regions in a matter of hours. However, the cost of these forms of transit can be a significant deterrent, especially for budget-conscious travelers or those wanting to immerse themselves in a more leisurely and nuanced journey through the country.

Luckily, there is an often overlooked alternative: overnight buses. These road warriors of the Japanese transport system present affordable and comfortable options for long-distance travel. Not only do they significantly cut travel expenses, but they also offer the unique advantage of saving a night's worth of accommodation costs. By traveling overnight, you're effectively hitting two birds with one stone — getting both your transport and accommodation sorted in one go.

One might imagine that comfort is sacrificed in pursuit of the economy, but that's far from the case with Japan's overnight buses. Many of these buses are designed with the long-haul traveler in mind, featuring amenities that range from reclining seats to private cubicles and even beds and a set of pajamas in some cases. The emphasis on passenger comfort ensures that you arrive at your destination well rested and ready to explore.

Join us as we delve into the best overnight bus companies and routes in Japan, highlighting those that stand out for their unique features, comfort, and value for money.

1. Willer Express: Affordable comfort on wheels

Probably one of the most well-known, low-cost bus companies in Japan, Willer Express offers a wide variety of overnight routes such as Tokyo to Osaka , Kyoto , and Hiroshima .

Among the myriad of routes offered by Willer Express, one of the most popular is the Tokyo-to-Osaka route. This route connects two of Japan’s most visited cities, which makes it a great alternative to air and bullet train transit.

Amenities on board

Willer Express is renowned for its focus on passenger comfort, particularly on this route. The buses are equipped with amenities that are designed to enhance the travel experience. Passengers can enjoy reclining seats that ensure ample legroom and privacy, often with privacy hoods, seat dividers, and curtains. Additionally, the buses are equipped with blankets, high-speed Wi-Fi, USB charging outlets, and even a toilet.

Passengers also have the option to book buses with only three seats per row, allowing for more personal space and a private leg rest that ensures a comfortable sleep.

*Note: Available amenities differ depending on the bus/seat type

Journey duration

The travel time from Tokyo to Osaka on Willer Express overnight buses is approximately eight to nine hours, depending on traffic conditions and the specific route taken. (Some buses will make more stops than others or arrive at different destinations within Osaka.) The duration is ideal for an overnight trip, as it allows passengers to board the bus in the evening in Tokyo and arrive fresh in Osaka the following morning, ready to explore.

Ticket costs

The cost of a ticket on the Tokyo-to-Osaka route varies depending on several factors, such as the type of seat chosen, the day of travel, and how far in advance the booking is made. The prices can vary from around 3,000 JPY to 10,000 JPY. The lower end of the spectrum gets you a standard comfortable seat, while the higher end typically offers more luxurious and spacious seating options.

Luckily, Willer Express’s website supports English, so up-to-date prices can be checked effortlessly here .

2. Kanto Bus Dream Sleeper: The epitome of luxury travel

overnight-bus-japan

The Kanto Bus Dream Sleeper service is the ultimate way to travel on wheels. This journey connects two of Japan’s most iconic cities, Tokyo and Osaka, as well as Nara . If you’re looking for an overnight bus route and wish to travel in the utmost comfort and luxury, look no further.

The Dream Sleeper buses from Kanto Bus Company are akin to mobile boutique hotels. Each bus is equipped with individual cubicles that feature “zero-gravity” reclining seats, ensuring maximum privacy and comfort. These cubicles are also equipped with amenities such as a personal reading light, a foldaway table, and power outlets for charging electronic devices. Passengers will also be treated to a private “amenities pack”, which includes a set of comfy pajamas, slippers, a toothbrush, and other goods.

The attention to detail extends to the inclusion of a hotel-quality restroom, enhancing the overall luxury of the experience. The bus interior design creates an atmosphere of exclusivity and relaxation, unmatched by most other overnight bus services.

The trip from Tokyo to Osaka on the Kanto Bus Dream Sleeper is around eight to nine hours. This timeframe is ideal for an overnight journey, allowing passengers to board in the evening, enjoy a restful night’s sleep, and arrive at their destination refreshed and ready to start their day in a brand-new city.

Reflecting its premium services and amenities, the Dream Sleeper is on the higher end of the price spectrum. Tickets for this luxury overnight journey typically range from about 18,000 JPY to 20,000 JPY. While it is a pricier option compared to standard overnight buses, the Dream Sleeper offers a level of comfort and privacy that justifies the cost, especially for those seeking a more exclusive and restful travel experience.

You can find more detailed ticket and pricing information on their official website here .

overnight-bus-japan

The buses' thematically pink seats are designed for comfort, allowing passengers to recline and rest peacefully throughout the journey. Additional amenities include privacy curtains, power outlets, blankets, and pillows.

The trip from Tokyo to Nagoya on this ladies-only bus typically takes about six to seven hours. The overnight schedule is ideally suited for travelers who wish to make the most of their time, departing from Tokyo in the late evening and arriving in Nagoya early in the morning, refreshed and ready for the day ahead.

The price for a ticket on the Nagoya Cherish bus is competitive, aligning with standard overnight bus fares like the Willer Express buses mentioned above. Prices can vary depending on factors like the day of travel and how far in advance the booking is made, but they generally range from 5,000 JPY to 8,000 JPY. This cost-effective pricing, coupled with the specialized female-only service, makes the Ladies Only Nagoya Cherish bus an appealing choice for female travelers seeking a comfortable and secure overnight travel option.

Three great side-trips from Nagoya

nagoya road trip

Conveniently located at the heart of Japanfs largest island of Honshu, the city of Nagoya is not only a lively and fascinating place in its own right, but makes an ideal base from where you can explore some of the most spectacular destinations in central Japan. With easy access from Chubu Centrair International Airport in just 30 minutes by train, itfs also an ideal place to start or finish your trip.

Following on from our previous video introducing some of the best things to see and do in Nagoya and surrounding Aichi Prefecture, we took a second trip to explore three great side-trip options from the city, each with something unique to offer travellers willing to venture a little off the beaten track.

Mount Ontake

About 100 kilometers to the northeast of Nagoya on the border between Nagano and Gifu prefectures, Mount Ontake is Japanfs second tallest volcano and considered one of its most sacred mountains. For centuries, the mountain was revered by practitioners of shugendo, a form of mountain asceticism combining elements of Buddhism and Shinto, but remained off-limits to lay people. That all changed with the appearance of the 18th century monk Kakumei, who created the first safe mountain path and encouraged ordinary people to undertake pilgrimages to the summit.

nagoya road trip

His work was continued by another monk known as Fukan, who established a second trail on the side of the rapidly-growing new capital city of Edo, today Tokyo. He also spread word of the mountain far and wide, establishing a movement that would later gain official recognition as a sect within Shinto, known as Ontakekyo.

nagoya road trip

Located at the foot of the mountain and the last rest stop on the Fukan trail, the little village of Otaki is a place steeped in this tradition, where practitioners have come for centuries to ritually purify themselves before making the challenging climb to the summit. In the surrounding forests, visitors can stroll along a number of scenic trails dotted with shrines and stone monuments - even without trekking all the way to the mountaintop, it is a beautiful and fascinating area in its own right.

nagoya road trip

After exploring some of the trails, we made a stop at the nearby Kurumisawa Ryokan, a family run establishment that has served generations of pilgrims. Here, we enjoyed a delicious meal of shojin ryori, a traditional vegetarian cuisine originating in Buddhist monastaries.

nagoya road trip

Following the meal, I had the chance to take part in waterfall meditation, a kind of ritual purification sometimes performed by pilgrims before setting foot on sacred mountain spaces. Feeling more than a little exposed, I stepped gingerly into a torrent of icy water, sparkling with suffused sunlight. I couldn't say how long I stood in the water, but it was an intense and refreshing experience, and left me feeling strangely moved as we continued on along the trail.

nagoya road trip

Located in Gifu Prefecture, on the western edge of the Japanese Alps, Takayama is an attractive city with a rural atmosphere, famous since ancient times for its carpentry and well-known today for its historic old town , located a few minutes walk east of Takayama Station. A great way to take in this very scenic area and its many beautifully preserved traditional buildings is with a gentle stroll, starting with Takayama Jinya - a former government office dating from the feudal age - then crossing the nearby Miyagawa River and proceeding north along Sannomachi Dori, passing sake breweries, shops and museums.

nagoya road trip

Continue north for about twenty minutes, and you'll finish up at the Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine, a secluded precinct of elegant wooden buildings surrounded by tall trees, where the lively Takayama festival begins every year in October.

nagoya road trip

Located an hour's drive east of the city, the Goshikigahara Forest is a vast stretch of forest wilderness and a perfect destination for hikers and nature lovers. Virtually uninhabited, the forest boasts spectacular scenery and an impressive array of wildlife, but due to its protected status can only be entered with a local guide.

nagoya road trip

Starting from the Goshikigahara Visitor Center, we walked a section of the Shirabiso trail with beautiful primeval forest, waterfalls and unique plantlife. Our English-speaking guide was friendly, approachable and hugely knowledgeable, and her insights into local history and ecology added greatly to our experience.

nagoya road trip

About an hourfs drive to the south of Takayama in Gero City, the town of Hida Osaka is surrounded by deep forests, known for containing more waterfalls than anywhere else in Japan - more than 200 of which are over five meters in height. Formed around 54,000 years ago by lava flows from nearby Mount Ontake, the areafs unique geography and diversity of plant life make it an ideal destination for hikers. Visitors can choose from 14 different walking courses, from short scenic strolls to challenging full-day hikes.

nagoya road trip

As a gentle, scenic introduction to the area, we took the Sennindaki walking course - an approximately two-hour trail close to Nigorigo Onsen with views of four beautiful falls and an area of dense primary forest.

nagoya road trip

Kumano City

A peaceful seaport town on the coast of rural Mie Prefecture, Kumano City is known for its beautiful surrounding landscape, rugged coastal landscapes including one of Japan's longest beaches, and its position on the ancient pilgrim route connecting the Three Grand Shrines of Kumano with the Ise-Jingu Shrine.

nagoya road trip

In the mountains to the west of the city, the Maruyama Senmaida is one of the largest and most spectacular rice terraces in all of Japan, with well over a thousand tiny rice paddies of all shapes and sizes cut into a steep hillside, each one perfectly angled to get every last bit of sunlight. Due to its difficult terrain, every aspect of planting and harvesting is still done by hand.

nagoya road trip

Located to the south of the city across from a long stretch of beautiful pebble beach is Hana-no-iwaya Shrine - one of Japanfs oldest and most unique shrines. Said to be the burial place of the goddess Izanami who created the world, the site is centered on a towering 45 meter rock, shaped by the ocean wind and revered since prehistoric times.

nagoya road trip

A short walk north of the city center stands the Oniga-jo , or Ogrefs Castle - one of several impressive rock formations dotting the coastline. Originally formed from volcanic ash, ocean waves gradually eroded its soft rock face into a towering and otherworldly structure, extending for over a kilometer around a small cape.

nagoya road trip

Departing from the nearby Matsuzaki Port, the Tategasaki Sightseeing Boat Tour offers some breathtaking views of the Mie Coast to the north of central Kumano City, including a series of spectacular cliff faces. Two of the most famous spots to look out for are the Blue Cave and Tategasaki - a huge rock structure of almost perfectly vertical columns.

nagoya road trip

At the northeastern edge of town, a set of old stone steps lead into the forest, marking the start of one section of the ancient pilgrim trails. Known as the Matsumoto-toge Pass , the path continues for a few kilometers to Odomari Station and includes a beautiful view of Shichiri Mihama Beach.

nagoya road trip

20 Dec - Arrive Nagoya airport, train to Takayama which will serve as my base for sight seeing around the area. Stay for 2 nights in Takayama. (Qn: apart from Gero Onsen, Hida Takayama, Hida Furukawa, are there any other must-see around this area?)

22 Dec - Train to Toyama which will serve as my base for sight seeing around the area. Stay for 2 nights. (Qn: are 2 nights in Toyama considered too lengthy as website seems to indicate this is a city town?)

24 Dec - Train to Nozawa Onsen Ski resort, plan to ski for 4 days & spend a day visiting the Snow monkey park. Stay for 5 nights.

29 Dec - Train to Matsumoto, visit its reknowned castle. Stay for 1 night.

30 Dec - Train to Nagoya. Stay for 1 night.

31 Dec - Depart from Nagoya airport in the morning.

Appreciate your advices!

' class=

Toyama - instead of Toyama better stay 2n in Kanazawa with more worthy spots. Drop by Shirakawa-go for a few hours while travelling enroute by Nohi bus from Takayama.

https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2167.html

Nozawa onsen - while the piste runs are fine beware that most accom are lodges on hillside. Unless you stay in a handful of traditional onsen hotel/ryokans with half-board plans, you'd need to hunt for dinner places on narrow and slippery/snowy/icy alleys.

Thus, consider Shiga Kogen which is uphill of the Snow monkey park or Hakuba where most accom + dining are on flat terrain.

Note that snowfall has been fairly inconsistent in recent years due to global warming. Manage your expectation that snow might be suboptimal in late Dec.

check out snowjapan.com for archived snow reports in those ski resorts.

ps. skied in Hakuba in late Jan (8th time).
