The Best Whale Watching in Seattle

Whales are one of the best natural sights to see during a Seattle trip.

The water off the northwestern coast of Washington affords ample opportunities to see a wide array of wildlife, including orcas and other whales. The following tours, which U.S. News determined to be the best based on the input of both travel experts and tour-takers, will take you to the ideal viewing locations. Not all of these trips leave from the Seattle area, and some may be best suited for daytrips. Most tour options depart from the San Juan Islands, which sit north of Seattle. To get to the islands, you'll need to drive about 90 miles to Anacortes, Washington, then jump on a ferry. Whale watching in this area generally occurs year-round, with peak viewing opportunities from May to October.

Note: Some whale watching trips have minimum age requirements.

Tickets cost $109 for adults, $99 for seniors 65 and older, $79 for youths 3 to 17 and $10 for infants (ages 2 and younger). OVER 850 FIVE-STAR REVIEWS!

We took our two grandsons out on the 2 hour whale watching excursion - perfect amount of time for the kids. Boat was super nice, and captain shared really good information about whales, dolphins, sea lions and more. Their use of a drone was also really cool! Saw at least 4 grey whales, and 2 different species of dolphins who raced under the boat with us! Great day on the water!

Amazing! Saw a bunch of dolphins and sea lions. It was such an easy process to board. Fun and super special. If you're looking for a great adventure, definitely take this tour!

Always enjoy the afternoon trips! We use to go from Dana Point but discovered Oceanside and now only go out with Oceanside Adventures! Today we saw a pod of dolphins playing all around the boat and also saw a gray whale. I got a shot of the fluke!

Best whale watching tour I’ve every been on. The crew was great and we saw all kinds of animals from a grey whale to different types of dolphins. We even saw a sea lion eat a small shark! Great experience overall!

I've gone out with Oceanside Adventures several times over the last two years, and every single trip has been a new experience... Shane the captain is incredibly friendly and informative and his crew is amazing. It's an experience I would recommend for anyone. Bring the whole family!

My wife and I loved our trip. Good, stable, safe, clean boat. Knowledgeable captain and mates. Leaving from Oceanside harbor makes for shorter trips - closer to the whales. We followed two whales and encountered multiple pods of dolphins. We plan to return next year.

The decision to pick this tour out of Oceanside turned out to be the best ever! The price was affordable, and one of the reasons I initially chose them, but the trip turned out to be far better than I ever expected. We saw what must have been hundreds of dolphins in 3 different species and 2 grey whales! We hung out with the whales for a long time and on the way back we took a detour and spotted sea lions hanging out on a buoy! The trip went quite a bit over the 2 hours we paid for and the crew went above and beyond to give us a memorable excursion! Well worth it! You won’t be sorry.

This is the second time we took the trip and we loved it each time. The crew is fantastic and kept us informed of events and sightings and they are super knowledgeable. The boat is very well maintained and the area is beautiful. We'll be back again and will be bringing our grandson and other family members next time.

Second trip with Oceanside Adventures and loved it. Friendly staff, knowledgeable. Captain extended out trip to catch a glimpse of a passing grey whale. Fantastic! Looking forward to our next trip.

My sister and I booked the whale watching tour while vacationing near Oceanside and we really enjoyed the experience. We saw thousands of dolphins, 2 whales, and a variety of other marine animals. We had a lovely day in terms of weather, so all around it was a wonderful, relaxing and fun way to spend a couple of hours on the water.

What Our Clients Have To Say ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️

a close up of a fish

The boat is cozy but it's all you need! It's close to the water so when the whales come up, you SEE them up close and personal. Chase Dekker and Jackson are the best combo around. Chase is the best naturalist/photographer around and Jackson is the best captain. I have been on 2, almost 3 Photography centric cruises and whale watching several times and every single time was memorable!!

The variety of marine life you can encounter in the Monterey Bay is exceptional. I've been fortunate to witness humpbacks, orcas, dolphins, gray whales, and more. Each trip is a new adventure, I highly recommend going out multiple times in a season to see it all. Don't miss out – book your tour with them today!

I have been on this boat multiple times, and it has been wonderful every time. I think the thing to remember is you are looking for animals. You're not guaranteed to see them every time, but I have been fortunate enough to. This cruise was a better experience for me than any of the others I have gone on, in other parts of California. If you would like to see humpback whales, this is the place to go. The crew is knowledgeable and experienced.

So awesome that this sustainable charter boat uses biodiesel! The captain and Brian (marine biologist) were so nice and accommodating and expert with their info and their ability to locate the best spots for finding marine wildlife.

We went on a cruise in early December. There weren't many other people that day so we had tons of space on the boat. Chase was great, shared tons of information about the wildlife we were seeing and the bay generally, he also answered many questions. Even before we got on the boat in the morning Chase and the boat captain had a plan for where to go based on what they'd heard from other boats. We spent a bunch of time with orcas (who came right up to the boat at one point) and then humpbacks.

Amazing day of whale watching. Saw lots of whale breaching and one whale fully out of the water. Lots of views of white dolphin, Casper, close by. Crew works hard to make sure you see ocean life and and knowledgeable about their behaviors.

Meet the Most Comfortable Boat in the Area

Island explorer 5 was built specifically built for whale watching..

Our goal is to show you as many whales as possible, and with the Island Explorer 5 , we do that better than any other company. To ensure comfort and quality, we don't book our vessels to full capacity. Every passenger has unobstructed front-row viewing. You won't be stuck inside looking through glass or forced to stand behind other guests.

Due to the design and stability of our vessel, we don’t force you to to sit down while we’re underway. Grab a hot cup of chili or a cold local brew while moving freely around our fully walk-around viewing decks. When you’d like to sit, however, we have plenty of options for everyone. The Island Explorer 5 has comfortable indoor heated cabins and outdoor, wind-protected areas with padded seating. No other vessel comes close to the comfort of the Island Explorer 5 .

Some of the features that set us apart from the pack are things you’ll never see. Our vessel is equipped with large, low-noise propellers and above-water exhaust to create a quieter experience for the whales. While watching whales, our vessel make less noise than the ambient sound of rain hitting the surface. We’ve modernized our boat by investing in equipment that not only meets but exceeds current emissions standards.

Island Explorer 5

Whale guarantee, we guarantee whales on every whale watching tour..

If you do not see a whale (orca, minke, gray, or humpback) with us, you can come again for 50% off your next tour. It’s that simple.

  • Species Covered: Bigg's killer whales, Southern Resident killer whales, humpback, minke, and/or gray whales
  • Date Range: Year-Round
  • Sighting Success Rate: Over 97% since 1996. Our Whale Report shows a detailed account of every tour. We rarely miss!

Where do we see whales?

We've integrated SPOT satellite technology to upload the precise GPS coordinates of the day's sightings to an interactive map on our website. As you'll see from the map, whales don't live in one spot. In fact, whales travel more than 100 miles in a 24 hour period! The Island Explorer 5 has the largest range in the area with the highest whale sighting success rate. It's a common misconception that small boats get closer to whales. Each vessel – regardless of size – is required to adhere to state and federal whale viewing laws. Large boats offer more stability, comfort, and added amenities (real bathrooms, onboard cafés, and much more). Our spacious vessel with multiple viewing decks offer an unparalleled photography platform that small boats simply cannot offer.

Our daily Whale Report is the most comprehensive record of whale sightings by a whale watch company in the industry. Every day, our professional naturalists record an account of the day and upload images. Check it out –– the Whale Report dates back to 2003!

We hope that in your time with us we can make you feel connected to the animals as they go about their life in nature. We also don’t wish to exploit them for a show or treat them as disposable producers of income. Whale Watching Virginia Beach

We like to think that whales enjoy hanging out in our waters during the cooler seasons because it’s their home away from home. When the chill of the polar regions, where they spend a majority of their time during the remaining months of the year, gets to be too much to bear, they come visit us - and who can blame them? You can join in on the fun on one of the many whale-watching cruises offering opportunities to see these magnificent creatures first-hand. You never know what you might see, so make sure that your camera is always ready!

Because whales migrate based on water and air temperatures, it’s difficult to determine the best time for whale-watching. While the prime months for sightings are typically January and February, whales have been spotted in large numbers as early as December. Give the Virginia Aquarium  or Rudee Tours  a call to see if they’ve spotted any whales yet. It’s true that if they’ve already been spotted for the season, you’re more likely to see them on an excursion – they like to hang around with each other!

Visit Our Gallery See the Wildlife

Throughout the year along with Gray and Blue Whales you may also see Fin Whales, Humpback Whales, Minke Whales, and Killer Whales (Orcas). Other wildlife frequently spotted off the coast of Long Beach are Dolphins including Common, Bottlenose, Risso's, and Pacific White Sided. The diversity in sea life found off the cost of Long Beach is special, and unlike any other region.

Long Beach Blue Whales

A Long Beach whale watching cruise can also give you the amazing opportunity to see a Blue Whale in Long Beach! Blue Whale watching on Long Beach whale watching tours is an incredibly breathtaking experience and an exciting must-see attraction for both tourists and Long Beach locals alike. Catch sight of a Blue Whale on your Long Beach whale watching cruise and you’ve officially seen the largest animal on earth – not to mention the biggest animal in the history of the planet! Believe or not, these massive sea mammals weigh an average of 150 tons, which is equivalent to three dozen elephants! Blue Whales on a Long Beach whale watching tour can even grow at a length of up to 100 feet.

Blue Whales in Long Beach can be spotted off the coast during the months of May to November.

Blue Whales are some of the most geographically diverse species on earth next to humans, so you can find them in oceans of all climates, from the arctic regions to tropical regions. Although Blue Whale sightings in Long Beach are more difficult to anticipate compared to the yearly migration of the Gray Whale, there is one indicator that can always help to predict their presence: the abundance of krill. While Blue Whale watching in Long Beach, you just might catch the Blue Whales grazing the surface of the ocean to feed on their favorite food. Blue Whales feast on krill, requiring 9,000 lbs of these tiny crustaceans a day and 40 million krill a day during their feeding season! Now, that’s an appetite.

Why Whale Watch in Long Beach?

When it comes to choosing your whale watching Long Beach location, you have a number of options around the globe. However, nothing beats whale watching in Long Beach, Southern California. For decades, areas including the coasts of Long Beach have served as a hub for whale watching Long Beach excursions simply because of the unmatched variety of marine life that migrate to the area year round. No matter the time of year, you just might catch a glimpse of whales feeding, socializing, and mating.

Whales You Might See

On your long beach cruise.

Keep a lookout! You just might see the following whales when you book your Long Beach whale watching tour with Harbor Breeze Cruises:

Gray Whales

As their name indicates, the Gray Whale can be most easily identified by its deep gray coloring peppered with white patches. Considered to be a medium sized whale, Gray Whales can reach up to 45 feet in length. The Gray Whale is known best for having one of the longest migrations of any mammal on the planet. Due to their unique migratory patterns, Gray Whales can be seen typically between November and April off the coast of Long Beach. So be sure to keep your eyes peeled for these majestic beauties!

Humpback Whales

The Humpback Whale is always a crowd favorite when spotted during a whale watching excursion. With its uniquely patterned tail fluke and wing-like flippers, the Humpback Whale is a sight to behold. These whales make their way to the coasts of California during the summer months to feed, delighting whale watchers with their signature acrobatic moves. In fact, Humpback Whales regularly jump out of the water- a sight not to be missed on your tour.

At an average of 65 feet long and 150,000 lbs, the Fin Whale ranks as the second-largest animal on the planet, right behind the Blue Whale. Fin Whales received their name from the trademark dorsal fin that grows to be about 60 cm high. Interestingly, few details are known about the specific migration patterns of the Fin Whale. However, they are routinely spotted in waters off the coast of Long Beach at various points throughout the year.

Helpful Tips For

With whale watching an integral part of Long Beach culture, rigorous safety standards and regulations have been set to ensure families can continue to participate in this thrilling activity without worry. Under the care of the experienced and dedicated staff at Harbor Breeze Long Beach Whale Watching Cruises, you’re in good hands.

Once you step on your boat, we invite you to sit back, relax, and be on the lookout for all the sea life the Pacific has to offer. While we will do everything in our capacity to ensure your satisfaction, there are a few tips to keep in mind to make for a comfortable whale watching trip:

1. Pack a Light Jacket. Off the coast of Long Beach out on the water, the temperature will be cooler. By bringing a light jacket and dressing in layers, you can avoid unwanted chills that may detract from your Long Beach whale watching experience!

2. Lather on the Sunscreen. While out on a Harbor Breeze Long Beach Whale Watching Cruise, you can expect to be on your boat for a few hours. On sunny days make sure to protect your skin to prevent unpleasant burns.

3. Protect Against Motion Sickness. There is nothing worse than excitedly embarking on your whale watching Long Beach tour, only to find yourself seasick when the boat gets moving. Those prone to seasickness should take over the counter medication prior to departure, or invest in non-medicinal alternatives such as Sea-Bands.

4. Be patient. The most important tip to remember for your Long Beach Whale Watching cruise is to be patient. Catching sight of the incredible marine life Long Beach has to offer can be breathtaking, however when and where sea animals pop up is unpredictable. Until we spot a majestic whale, simply enjoy your time out on the water.

History of Whale Watching

First started in San Diego in 1950, whale watching began when the Cabrillo National Monument was declared to be a public space for the viewing of gray whales. Within that first year, a reported 10,000 visitors traveled to watch these whales. A few years later, onlookers were given the opportunity to watch whales at an even closer distance, as the first water-based whale watching initiated. The industry continued to expand throughout the next few decades, spreading all across the world. For many developing countries, whale watching became particularly important. Making profits simply off of whales' appearances, these communities have significantly added to the support for the protection of these sea animals. And as whale watching becomes more prominent, it's important to remember that we must respect these creatures and their habitats. Having the opportunity to observe them is a privilege, and we must continue to ensure the protection of whales and cetaceans alike - something we believe in strongly here at Harbor Breeze.

Maui Hideaway

One of our favorite things about visiting Maui in the winter months is whale watching. The first time we visited during those months, we were “hoping” to see whales. Let me tell you, we were floored by how many whales we saw on a regular basis, even from within our condo!

If you want to level up your whale watching experience, we highly recommend a Maui whale watching tour. Our favorite is Sea Maui’s whale watching cruise , but there are a variety of options available. The types of tours you can take are as follows…

  • Ka'anapali Whale Watching Tours – Boat tours departing from Ka'anapali Beach
  • Ma'alaea Whale Watching Tours – Boat tours departing from Ma'alaea Harbor
  • Snorkel and Whale Watching Tours – Combine a snorkel tour with whale watching
  • Kayak Whale Watching Tours – Paddle near whales in a kayak
  • Rafting Whale Watching Tours – A thrilling rafting ride to see these giants

Whether you prefer the comfort of a boat, the excitement of snorkeling, the serenity of kayaking, or the thrill of rafting, there’s a tour for every traveler. Join us as we dive into these remarkable excursions, each promising breathtaking encounters with these magnificent marine giants.

Maui Whale Watching Tours FAQ

Maui Humpback Whale

Every year, thousands of North Pacific Humpback whales (also known as  kohola ) migrate 3,500 miles from Alaska to Maui’s warm waters to mate, give birth, and nurse their young. Whales start to arrive in October and November, with the best time to spot them being January through March. Whale season typically ends in April, when their numbers drop significantly.

Whale watchers will be treated to sights such as water spouts, breaching, tail slaps, fin flapping, and mothers with their calves. It’s not hard to spot whales, even with the naked eye, from many of Maui’s resorts and beaches. However, a pair of binoculars is always recommended! Additionally, The Pacific Whale Foundation hosts a week-long  Maui Whale Festival  every February that’s worth checking out if you’re in town during that time.

For the best up-close sighting experience, a whale watching tour with a guide is highly recommended. In addition to getting you up close to the whales, many tours feature amenities such as a delicious lunch and an open bar.

Tours depart from many of Maui’s popular tourist destinations, including Ka'anapali Beach and Ma'alaea Harbor, typically lasting 2-4 hours. No matter how you decide to whale watch, it’s truly an amazing experience every island visitor should have at least once!

While it’s highly likely to spot whales on Maui whale watching tours, there are no guarantees. The best time for sightings is during the peak whale season, roughly from December to March, when whales have finished migrating, are giving birth, and nursing their young. However, weather, whale behavior, and sheer luck can influence your chances.

Humpback Whale Facts

Kaanapali Whale Watching

Whales Have Been Visiting Maui for a Long Time

Archeologists have uncovered ancient carvings that point to humpback whales visiting Hawaii and the island of Maui since 1-600 AD. In addition to that, whales are also present throughout Hawaiian history, religion, and folklore. Many Native Hawaiians believe whales are  aumakua , a deified ancestor that can take the form of an animal.

Whales Migrate to Mate and Give Birth

Humpback whales make the long 3,500-mile journey to Maui every year to mate and give birth to their young. It takes them around 1-2 months to make the journey that typically has whales showing up around November. Once whales birth their young, the calves will learn the necessary survival skills before making the migration back to Alaska.

Whales Are Huge!

This is probably obvious, but it deserves some context. Adult humpback whales can reach up to 60 feet in length and weigh up to 40 metric tons, the equivalent of almost five school buses! Additionally, newborn calves are around 14 feet long, weigh up to 1,500 pounds, and grow around 100 pounds a day.

Whales Are Protected Animals

Humpback whale populations have severely declined in the past due to commercial whaling, getting to as low as 700 total at one point. Since then, conservation efforts and international law have helped protect these beautiful animals, allowing them to thrive. As of 2018, worldwide population estimates of humpback whales were around 135,000 individuals.

Whales Perform a Variety of Behaviors

It’s hard to miss whales performing some sort of behavior, as actions like blowing or breaching can easily be spotted from the shore in Maui. Whales’ behavior serves a range of purposes, such as breathing, communicating, or competing with other whales. If you see two whales going at it, they’re probably fighting to mate with an available female!

Some Whales Sing a Song

If you’re lucky, when you’re swimming or snorkeling, you may be able to hear the song of a lone male humpback whale. It’s debatable as to why they sing with evidence pointing to the possibility of multiple purposes. These songs are only sung by males during the winter breeding season, can last up to 30 minutes, and can be heard as far as 6 miles away!

Whale Watching from Waikiki Highlights

The whale-watching tour in their two-deck boat (great views!) leaves from Kewalo Boat Harbor ( click for directions ).

See the most stunning marine life in their natural habitat on this amazing whale-watching tour. Humpback whales migrate to the Hawaiian Islands during the winter months, December to March, for calving and mating. The warm waters surrounding the Hawaiian islands offer young whales protection from predators as they build up enough body fat for their 3,000-mile journey north.

Watch as humpback whales complete acrobatic breaches, pec slaps, spy hopping, and more. Whale sightings are not guaranteed but the captain and crew are experts at spotting them. They abide by federal requirements to keep a safe distance to not disturb the whales.

Whale watching from Waikiki will take on a tour in front of Waikiki Beach towards Diamond Head. Enjoy scenic views of Diamond Head as you watch whales in their natural habitat.

And You Creations Review: Things to Consider

Whale watching from Waikiki is convenient and a fun time out on the water. We have seen more whales (in our experience) and enjoyed the view more from the Waianae Coast, 45 minutes west of Waikiki. Hence, we also recommend this whale-watching tour from West Oahu .

A few sailboats leave directly from Waikiki Beach for day tours and sunset tours. Beach-loading sailboats are a convenient way to see whales but they don’t specialize in whale-watching like this tour. This tour is on a power boat, hence you forgo a sailboat experience. But, the double-decker design and faster boat provide more opportunities to find and view whales.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Children must be 2+ years old.

What is the cancellation policy?

Tour fees will be fully refunded if cancellation is made more than 24 hours prior to the tour’s departure. (Please note the tour starts early in the morning.) For cancellations made less than 24 hours prior to the tour, a full refund requires the presentation of a doctor’s note.

What about bad weather?

In instances where the weather is not ideal later in the day or our minimum passenger count is not met, those who have booked our second tour of the day will be asked to move to our first tour.

Where do we meet for check-in?

Check-in time is 30 minutes before the tour time.

Please meet at Kewalo Boat Harbor, located 2.5 miles from Central Waikiki on the east side of Ala Moana Park. Detailed meeting instructions will be emailed to you with the booking confirmation.

Are cameras and drones allowed?

Cameras are welcome at your own risk, but drones are not allowed on tours at this time.

Do they provide transport from my hotel or condo?

For their whale-watching tour, hotel pickup from Waikiki is not available. We recommend taking a taxi, Uber, or Lyft to the boat harbor. Limited parking is available at the boat harbor and Ala Moana Park but getting a ride would be more convenient.

What do I bring on the whale-watching trip?

We suggest you have on hand:

  • Flip flops
  • A rash shirt and/or swim shorts if you’re looking for more protection from the sun.
  • A light jacket
  • Cash or card for photo packages
  • Seasickness medication. You can pick up seasickness tablets from local drugstores, or, if you only ever experience very mild motion illness, ginger-based drinks can help stave it off.
  • A waterproof camera.

Please try to limit your belongings to one bag per person for the sake of space onboard.

Is food provided?

The whale-watching tour from Waikiki includes a light breakfast of pastries and morning beverages.

Will I get seasick?

If you’re prone to motion sickness, we recommend taking motion sickness medication the night before your tour and again one hour before your scheduled departure. Staying hydrated, avoiding heavier foods, and abstaining from drinking before your tour can also help prevent seasickness.

Is the boat covered?

Yes, the lower deck with the majority of the seating is covered.

The Best Harbor Boat Tours In Maine!

Cap'n Fish's Cruises

Everyone on staff was helpful and knowledgable. Easy to book online, easy to find. The kids love seeing seals and we had a great time. Everyone else on the boat seemed to be having fun too and there were great photo opportunities. Would definitely go again!

Have done several tours in the past and this one was better than I remember!. Boat comfortable, captain a wonderful tour guide. Would love to repeat the tour again soon. Dont hesitate this is the best you will find.

This was a great way to see the coast line around Boothbay! Beautiful fall day. The ship guide/captain was very informative and they took their time going around the islands and sharing lots of information about the landmarks and wildlife. We really enjoyed to ride, it was well worth the time and money!

We took the Captain's Combo trip and were extremely pleased. The boat, Pink Lady II was clean and in excellent condition. The captain not only piloted the boat well, he was also a very knowledgable narrator. The route taken on the trip included lighthouses, bays, wildlife, and our favorite, the working fishing village of South Bristol. Great trip.

Cruise was excellent. Captain was excellent. Running commentary was very informative. Cruise was just the proper length, not too long and not too short. All in all a very pleasant experience. I would recommend this for anyone in the area who would like to see the area by sea.

This was my second time on this cruise and I liked it just as much. The water was rougher this time so the captain changed the route just a little to get us in calmer water. We saw seals sunning on the rocks and trees just starting to turn color. I took my adultdaughter who's from New York city and she thought the views were beautiful. It gave her a very realxing change of scene. Both the captain's narration and the demonstration of lobstering were full of intriguing facts.

We took the 2 hour cruise around islands and rivers near Boothbay Harbor. The boat was first class and the captain was excellent. Very knowledgeable about the marine life and landscape and the crew was most accommodating. An excellent value as well. Highly recommended.

I can honestly say that this was the best boat see tour we ever did. We did the captains special the first time and were so pleased with the knowledge of the captain explaining everything along the trip that we decided to do the Kennebec River tour two days later. We saw seals, lighthouses, bald eagles and all kinds of birds. We had the same captain on both rides and were so impressed with his narration during the trip. Would highly recommend this to anyone. The price was decent too for all the sights you get to see and the great personality of the captain.

PUFFIN & LIGHTHOUSE CRUISE

Quick Details

  • Clock Duration: 2.5 - 3 hours
  • Calendar Available: Mid-May to Mid-August

One of Bar Harbor’s most popular wildlife and sightseeing cruises!

Join us for an adventure out into Frenchman Bay and the Gulf of Maine to see the most sought-after iconic symbols of Maine: Puffins and Lighthouses!

Ride aboard state-of-the art catamarans with professional and knowledgeable naturalists and crew to see three island lighthouses, including Petit Manan, the second tallest lighthouse in Maine!

The tour begins in Frenchman Bay and visits Egg Rock which is home to the first lighthouse of the tour and a nesting colony of cormorants and gulls. Be on the look out for seals and eagles at Egg Rock! This island is part of the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge ! After visiting Egg Rock, the boat will pick up speed and head out to an offshore island called Petit Manan . This location, another National Wildlife Refuge island, is home to a nesting colony of Atlantic puffins! See not only puffins, but razorbills, guillemots, as well as common and Arctic terns!

logo

We might also have a chance to talk with the researchers based on the island! We collaborate with Friends of Maine Coastal Islands NWR to educate the public about the seabirds that utilize the Refuge as critical nesting habitat. The research interns on the island talk with us via radio, giving us the chance to learn about their work on the island, the status of the puffins and other nesting seabirds, and history of Petit Manan Island.

The summer island intern program is vital to the seabird colony on Petit Manan.  The interns keep a wonderful blog throughout the summer. We learn are great deal from them during the cruise!

The tour then stops by Schoodic Island in search of eagles and other wildlife. The boat then takes a scenic ride along Schoodic Peninsula to view the shoreline of Acadia National Park and visit Winter Harbor Light.

Keep an eye out for ospreys and harbor porpoise or watch lobstermen haul up their traps. After a cruise through the Porcupine Islands on Frenchman Bay, the boat then returns back to Bar Harbor.

Binoculars and/or a long zoom lens are strongly recommended for closer views, however they are not required to see puffins.

Binoculars are also helpful for viewing other wildlife such as seals and eagles.

Photos featuring puffins were taken with a zoom lens. Puffins are about the size of a pigeon.

We follow wildlife viewing guidelines in order to prevent disturbance of the seabirds.

Due to the conditions of the seas heading out to the puffin nesting island, sea sickness can be an issue for some.

Here are some tips:

  • Stay hydrated.
  • Try ginger chews, ginger ale, or candied ginger
  • Over the counter sea sickness aids should be taken 1-2 hours before the trip leaves the dock. They usually don’t work once the boat is underway.
  • Acupressure wrist bands.
  • Stay outdoors, looking to the horizon, and avoid the front or upper level parts of the boat.
  • Avoid racing to the restrooms or cabins if you start to feel queasy. These locations will make you feel worse.
  • The captain and crew will inform passengers of the sea conditions. If worried about getting seasick, passengers have the chance to step off the boat, prior to trip’s departure, to reschedule for a different trip or get refunded.
  • The crew are available at all times if you need assistance.
  • Chevron down Kid Friendly?

Yes! All ages welcome and kids can certainly enjoy this trip and learn a great deal!

Just a few things to keep in mind:

  • Safety- it is crucial that kids have an adult with them at all times. We are out on the open ocean and kids, being curious, tend to wander off, attempt to jump, run, swing and climb on things they shouldn’t and could potentially get seriously injured. It helps to make sure parents are reinforcing the safety rules!
  • Seasickness- kids tend to get seasick more easily. Keeping kiddos hydrated, in the open air, and avoiding sugary foods will help keep them from getting seasick.

When the whales are not around, Da Whale Boat operates private charters that can include Dolphin Viewing, sustainable snorkeling, fishing, beach hopping, sunset charters, manta rays and more. International whale experiences are also offered in the Hawaii off season. Captain Kelsey and team are actively a part of a non-profit, called For Children to Flourish that helps connect local communities to natural resources where hope can be found and healing can begin. Currently, the team is helping take out local kids and their support systems out on boats for free on Big island and Maui: working with the victims of the Lahaina fire.

The Best Big Island Whale Watching!

a close up of a ball

We had a fantastic time out on Da Whale Boat. The crew was amazingly kind and knowledgeable. We saw dolphins, turtles, octopus and hundreds of glorious fish. We had an amazing time on the lovely boat with the crew, I would highly recommend the experience!

We had a wonderful snorkeling experience with Captain Damon and Sue Lang! Both are very knowledgeable and made the trip both fun and interesting. Sue Lang swims like she was born in the ocean and our youngest granddaughter is convinced she’s a mermaid!

Captain Kelsy and George is our absolute favorite team for any and all ocean adventures! Professional, knowledgeable, fun, accommodating, and experienced! We had taken two trips with Da Whale Boat and we are looking forward to many more!

What an excellent time whale watching with this group! We loved the intimate vibe of the smaller boat and more personalized conversation. The captain was incredible, and we really enjoyed listening to the whales! We highly recommend Da Whale Boat!!
