Architects are a British metalcore band from Brighton, England. The band currently consists of lead vocalist Sam Carter, drummer Dan Searle, guitarist Josh Middleton and Alex Dean on bass guitar.
All of the original members of Architects were intently involved with the Brighton music scene due them all growing up in the surrounding areas. They cross several genres with their technical music, the primary influences have been noted as ranging through artists from hardcore punk and heavy metal music with Meshuggah, Converge, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Gojira and Thrice all noted as influencers. Sam Carter who was a drummer and studied drums at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music before joining Architects, had performed in multiple local bands, one of which had the opportunity of supporting Enter Shikari. Architects was born in 2004 when Drummer Dan Searle and his twin brother Guitarist Tom Searle began the project under the name Counting Days, until the addition of Matt Johnson, guitarist Tim Hillier-Brook and Tim Lucas on bass guitar continued as Architects.
After the release of their debut album Nightmares in May of 2006, the band were offered the opportunity to tour with several prolific artists including Beecher and Bring Me The Horizon, yet due to the age of the members at the time they had to book several weeks off college in order to continue their touring schedule. After their first album, Architects sound was forced to change dramatically due to the departure of lead vocalist Matt Johnson He was replaced by local musician Sam Carter who had been described by Searle as an 'easy choice'. After their next album 'Ruin' which took them on large headline tours in both the UK and the US they revealed they had been signed to Century Media Records for a three album deal. The first release was 'Hollow Crown' which made the first dent on the UK charts, placing it at #117 and was promoted with the band completing a 19 date headline tour of the United Kingdom before supporting Parkway Drive in Australia.
Their next album 'The Here and Now' was released in 2010 and saw the band's sound following a more commercial direction, with sales figures reflecting this as they charted at #57 in the UK, a substantial gain compared to its predecessor. Critics enjoyed the album, but fans were not impressed with the departure from the heavier, more technical sound they had first been attracted to. They slowly began to remedy this with their next releases, returning to the music they were first inspired to make, the outcomes were greatly rewarded as the 2014 release 'Lost Forever//Lost Together' saw them crack the top 20 of the UK and Australian album charts whilst making their first dent on the US billboard.
Live reviews
Architects are easily one of my Top 5 favourite bands of all time. I feel they have a particular connection with their audience that many other heavy bands lack. I've seen them a few times throughout their career and as much as I love them I would have to say that the intimacy with the fan base feels like it has withered somewhat. This may not exactly be the reality as I could just be me getting older and not really connecting with live environments as I used to. This was definitely one of the main issues with the concert as a lot of people saw it as an opportunity to get blind drunk and consistently bump into people (nowhere near the mosh pit) with no concern for other people. As hard as this band played the atmosphere can be dictated by those around you, and on this occasion it was.
As far as the support acts, they were not to my liking. They came across as a parody of my teen years rolled into a Kevin & Perry like homage. One comment from a band seemed really at odds with the crowd, when saying "we welcome all people of all types" when the crowd was one of the least diverse places I've been in recent memory.
Architects played their new material strongly. I was a bit put off by how dominant the snare drum was over the mix, and the guitars seemed to blur a lot of the time into a wall of sound (sometimes losing Adam almost entirely). I was amazing at the strength of Sam's vocals and how he's able to main that throughout. Also, Dan's power really stood out to me; incredibly compelling.
Overall, I think I find myself wondering if I'm a Roger Murtaugh in all of this. I may be a little too old for this shit. I'll definitely buy their records, but I'm not sure this live environment is entirely for me.
PS: is Sea Shepherd seen as a fashion now? I get that Sam is a spokesperson for them but when I see people wearing their gear and drinking from these plastic cups and throwing them about without a care in the world, it makes me wonder if anyone really has absorbed their message. Also, I think I saw a total of 2 people talk to Sea Shepherd.
PPS: am I the only one who finds it totally unnecessary to say "fuck" every other word in a sentence? I get that someone can be hyped, but it gets a little funny after a while.
PPPS: Can someone with epilepsy ever see Architects live? I don't think I saw a warning for the amount of strobes, which at times was blinding.
Signing off - a miserable sod.

The service was pretty good and we entered pretty easily. Vega is a small place, but it's allright. The warmup band was Polaris, and although their music was okay, they did to mamy things with the crows. 1 wall pit, 2 circle pits within the first 20 minutes. I stood next to a dude that started jumping so much that I spilled my beer. The next time he did it, I "accidentally" spilled my bear onto his shoes. The next band was beartooth, by far my favorite of the three, they asked people to jump, but not move to much. The singing was great and the crowd was feeling it. A good experience in my opinion. Then achitects came, and while some warmup music played, I started getting scared, the crowed moved and jumped the chop suey, that they were playing while setting up. A guy jumped so much that I had to push him back to his place. So I grabbed my girlfriends hand and we went up to the balcony. Best decision yet. When they got on stage people got wild, not like wild for the music. No, they made pits and ran around, crowd surfing and taking of clothes. Honestly, I think they came for the pit more than the band. I'm only familiar with one of architects songs, and you know it's bad when I thought they were playing the song I like, only to find out that all their songs sound fucking simular. It became more entertaining to look at the people falling down from crowd surfing and pushing each other, than the band. At last we went out a couple hours before, we bought a beartooth t-shirt on the way out. We also met the kind people that we stood next to, and they had to leave because of a wrist and a back injury. On top of that, they said that they kept getting a shoe in their head from people crowd surfing. From the resturant across we could see an ambulance, but that doesn't really surprise me. Overall I'd say the beartooth part was good, but the rest was chaotic and at times brutal.
Describing their music as unreal, the band Architects have conquered the world gaining adoring fans as they bring their metal to the core. Originating from Brighton, the band released their debut album 'Nightmares' which enabled them to secure a support slot for Prog Metal band SikTh. After the departure of their originally vocalist, Sam Carter joined the line-up in 2007 solidifying and defining the unique sound we would come to recognise as Architects. In 2008 they signed with the independent label Century Media Records and took part in the renowned Never Say Die! Tour in Europe alongside Parkway Drive and Protest The Hero.
In 2009 they released their pivotal album, 'Hollow Crown' demonstrating the band stylistic progression featuring anthems such as the title track “Hollow Crown” and “Follow the Water.” Experimenting further with their later releases 'Daybreaker' and 'Lost Forever // Lost Together' allowed Architects to incorporate a more melodic approach and brave politically driven subjects.
It’s no surprise that Architects are able to put on an incredible live show. With the ‘A’ from the “Hollow Crown” album cover is a prominent feature on their backdrop. As soon as Sam Carter hits the stage, energy levels are already at 110% as he paces up and down performing directly to not only those at those pressed against the barrier adorning Architects merchandise but to the whole room. With strobes at full blast, the crowd can’t help but jump in perfect unison, some even taking the opportunity to crowdsurf to the front of the stage.
If you thought you came for a sit down show, you’re sadly mistaken.
For some reason, Architects has me coming back to see them if they're even remotely in my area. This was the 5th time I've seen them live, and let me tell you, it just gets better and better every time. The vocals are usually something that (for some reason) isn't loud enough usually; but hey, maybe I've just been standing in the wrong part 5 times (: Other than that, expect an upbeat crowd that's filled with people that truly enjoy melodic hardcore. The riffs and the drums are just the beginning of the beauty of seeing Architects live, as Sam is ALWAYS super energetic during every single lyric he sings. This was the first Canadian show on their 'Lost Forever // Lost Together' tour, debut-ing their album. They continued to play a good, even, mix of songs from Hollow Crown and Daybreaker.
One thing I look forward to when going to a concert of this genre is being able to yell the lyrics at the lead as loud as I can, because I know that they mean something to everyone there; it brings a sense of community right in that venue. Architects values that greatly, and have continued to show that at every show played.
The Rio Theatre was an.. interesting choice of venue for.. well, any concert really, but Architects made it work by owning the 5"0 stage and making their sound echo throughout the whole venue. With such outstanding and catchy riffs, Architects will always be a band to go see.
There are plenty of bands who started off with a heavy sound - perhaps they were metalcore, or screamo - who ultimately ended up with a musical identity so watered down that it’d be difficult to argue that they were actually anything more than glorified boy bands, aimed at the disaffected rather than the typical One Direction fan. You Me at Six and We Are the Ocean are both good examples of that particular phenomenon, so fair play to Architects for managing to bring a metalcore sound forwards, in crisp, polished fashion, without actually conceding creative control or changing their image for the sake of commercial viability. The Brighton outfit, at ten years into their careers, have long had a cult fanbase, but it was one they managed to expand considerably with the release of The Here and Now in 2011, which leant towards more of a post-hardcore sound than before. Since then, they’ve continued to go from strength to strength, despite the departure of Tim Hillier-Brook on guitar; their most recent record, this March’s Lost Forever // Lost Together, went in at number fourteen on the UK charts, and saw them play to the biggest crowds of their career so far on a five-date UK tour. They’ll bring their incendiary live show to Reading and Leeds next month, second from top at The Pit - on this form, they’re not to be missed.
First of all it was an awesome choice of supporting bands. Polaris is a band I love listening to for a year now and Beartooth always surprises with catchy refrains and great breakdowns.
In my opinion Architects is one of the greatest live bands i have ever seen. They truly show what they're able to do, play as if it was playback because of the pure sound they bring along quite directly from their albums and catch you in an emotional way not many would think is possible. It was an absolutely amazing evening.
The only thing i realized over the past few months/years is that the "Gasometer" in Vienna can't quite convince me with the sound in the arena. It's always very echo-y and fuzzy. Not quite my favourite place to go to concerts to.
At last i would like to thank Songkick for making it possible for me to always keep track of the concerts in my area.
TERRIBLE! Strictly because of the security staff they are terrible I go there to mosh pit and have a sick time and mosh to my favorite bands and these guys at the front lines in front of the stage at telling me I can't concert because I crab serve four times in a row within 15 minutes so basically I'm just done Crown surfing in the start of the night if they're going to kick me out the stuff there are a goddamn joke basically almost ruin my night terrible I paid my money to go there and do my thing like lots of other guys do and telling me I can't concert that's half of fun when I go to my concerts just simply terrible to me it's not fair it's a bit of a joke they should do something else if they can't handle it in front of the stage
The show was amazing, Architects were strong and offered one of the best shows recently.
But the location, Tonhalle in Munich... i would not recommend it in any way. They have a problem with the air circulation or something. In less than 1h you couldn’t breath, everything was wet, the floor, the walls, water dripping from the ceiling, literally no air circulation whatsoever. Luckily this didn’t affect the show, because the guys are true to their fans and committed to hold a great show. But man.. I’ve never been to such a concert in such conditions...
Holy Hell! That concert was phenomenal, I've seen Architects for the second time now and I completely forgot just how good Sam Carter's voice is, his projection is unlike anything else, now while I did not come souly for the Architects, While She Sleeps & Thy Art Is Murder were f***ing bone shatteringly good, I've never seen a more hardcore set like Thy Art Is Murder. Lawrence Taylor & While She Sleeps hit every string right, after that concert last night my entire body aches from so much moshing, Metal for life!
Architects had a very high energy show, but it was distracting how much smoke and lights they had as part of that show. I could not see dan (drummer) most of the time and the guitars were often overshadowed visiuallt by the intense strobes being used so you could not see them much of the time, either. It made for a dazzling show, but not if you like watching the artists. Other than that, there were plenty of sing along parts and the different instruments and voice were well mixed.

In November 2018, Architects stared grief in the face on the remarkable album Holy Hell: a stark picture of the darkness and despair that lay at the heart of losing a brother, band mate and best friend in Tom Searle, the group’s founding guitarist who two years prior passed away following a private three-year battle with cancer. The album, which bravely laid bare the band’s emotions with a vulnerability that few would ever publicly open themselves up to, forged such a deep connection with fans new and old as to see the quintet – vocalist Sam Carter, drummer Dan Searle, bassist Ali Dean and guitarists Josh Middleton and Adam Christianson – headline arenas the world over, and move in excess of 200,000 equivalent album units. This was the band finding a voice for their, and their fans’, innermost pain, and in turn cementing their place as one of rock music’s most critically revered and commercially successful talents. Two years removed from that journey, though with its lessons and spirit embedded in the fabric of their being, Architects have applied that same soul-searching introspection to their highly-anticipated new opus, For Those That Wish To Exist. An examination of the part we are all playing in the world’s slow destruction, the band’s ninth studio record tackles the biggest questions facing the future of our planet with their grandest, most ambitious work to date. “This album was me looking at our inability to change to a way of life that would sustain the human race and save the planet,” summarises principal songwriter Dan Searle. “The human race has become out of control; the world is dying and it is all our fault. It’s a manifestation of our collective behaviour that is running rampant, and at this moment desperately needs to be altered.” Such concerns have long been prevalent in the music of a band who have continually championed and shared their platform with causes such as Sea Shepherd, are outspoken critics of barbaric exercises such as fox hunting, and who have fixed a focus on sustainability in everything from their travelling tour scheduling to the recently launched Architects Merch Co. It is through such a position of personal accountability that the universal themes of For Those That With To Exist are uniquely approached. “In writing the record, I felt a great accountability for our own actions, and the part we are playing as individuals,” Dan begins. “I wanted to look in the mirror and ask ourselves the question of what are going to do, as opposed to trying to point the finger at politicians. Change has to start on a personal level. The world has developed a culture of wanting someone else to deal with it, when we need to take our own responsibility. It has to start there.” Disdain for such communal apathy is writ large across For Those That Wish To Exist’s 15 tracks. ‘When the clock runs down to zero / We’ll all stand up and take a bow / So quick to play the hero’ bemoans the song An Ordinary Extinction; ‘We can say how we all wanna be saved / But it’s easier to follow’ spits Carter elsewhere on Little Wonder. Album opener Do You Dream Of Armageddon? confronts that reality with a simple question: ‘Will we ever learn our lesson?’ It is one of many presented without answer throughout the record’s hour-long journey of self-examination. These songs hang in a limbo between energising positivity that it is not too late to correct our collective course, and a paralysing negativity of defeatism; where hope and despondency are bed-fellows triggered daily by the simple act of existence. Neither wins out; come the swelling grandeur of album-closer Dying Is Absolutely Safe, listeners may feel anything from a crushing weight of hopelessness to an uplifting sense of newfound determination. When the world today so often leaves you feeling numb, Carter admits he is “so proud that we can stir such conflicting emotions.” Such a reflection of the human condition, and the exhausting highs and lows that come it, is perhaps For Those That Wish To Exist’s purest, and most absorbing, achievement. “The album is its own beast,” Carter reflects. “It’s a piece of art that is there to allow people to take what they want from it. It’s a big question mark. There’s some big questions being asked in it, and I think the answer to each is different depending on your own circumstances. Sometimes you feel reasons to be positive. Sometimes you don’t. It reflects how we all feel in life, from day to day.” Written across the past 24 months – shaped by experiences both professional and personal, including Searle’s changing outlook as a new father – and recorded at a multitude of locations throughout 2020 (including at Devon’s Middle Farm Studios and at home in the band’s birthplace of Brighton), For Those That Wish To Exist sees Architects channel such bigger-picture thinking into their most expansive sonic offering yet, which builds upon the band’s hallmark post-metalcore and layers a burgeoning influence of electronics and orchestral strings, horns and choirs. Guest spots from Parkway Drive’s Winston McCall, Royal Blood’s Mike Kerr and Biffy Clyro frontman Simon Neil punctuate proceedings, bringing their own changes of pace and “unique tones”, as Carter – whose own vocal performance, shaped by an “unhealthy” drive for perfection, moves into dynamic new territory – puts it. The result is a rich tapestry that transcends the limitations of genre and rewards exploration and immersion in its journey. To what destination said journey leads is uncharted. Creatively, it means that Architects remain not only countless steps ahead of their peers, but in an entirely different lane of their own making altogether. Thematically, both Carter and Searle return to the album’s title as evidence that evolution, of challenging established models and striving for a collective betterment, is something we all must rise to. “For me, the album title is speaking to the people who are ready to drag themselves through the shit, and help drag other people through it too, in order to fight the good fight,” Carter says. “The title speaks to those people who want to live, who want to live in a better world, who want to make a difference,” asserts Searle. “For anyone who thinks that creating a world that we can live in, and that our children can live in and our children’s children can live in, for anyone who thinks that’s important, this is for you.” –– Sam Coare, October 2020

Architects Announce Fall 2021 North American Tour Dates
With their new album For Those That Wish to Exist burning up the charts, Architects will finally make their return to North America this fall with a headlining tour set to launch in early November.
The run, which at this point features just Architects with no special guests or additional support, starts in Los Angeles on Nov. 2 and winds around the United States and Canada before finishing off exactly one month later on Dec. 2 in Minneapolis.
A complete list of upcoming tour dates can be seen below and fans can secure their tickets starting on June 11 at 10AM local time at the Architects website .
Released on Feb. 26, For Those That Wish to Exist , the band's ninth album, made an immediate impact and ascended to No. 1 on the charts in the U.K. , which was a career first. Stateside, the record debuted at No. 1 on the Digital Album Chart, hit No. 6 on the Current Rock Album chart and landed at No. 80 on the Billboard 200.
At the time the new album topped the charts in the U.K. Architects issued a statement expressing their gratitude toward the fans.
"We are blown away. Never in our wildest dreams did we aspire to this. Even 1 week ago, when we released this record, there was no discussion between us of having a No. 1 record … Four years ago we lost Tom and our worlds were turned upside down. The fact that we can stand here today with a No. 1 record in the U.K., having lost our songwriter, having created a record that took so many risks, should be impossible, but here we are," they said in appreciation.

Architects cancel U.S. tour due to “a number of logistical issues”
Bad news: Architects’ For Those That Wish To Exist U.S. tour with We Came As Romans and Like Moths To Flames isn’t happening…
Architects have announced the cancelation of their For Those That Wish To Exist U.S. tour.
The Brighton metal heroes’ upcoming touring plans stateside have unfortunately been scrapped due to “a number of logistical issues”, with the band blaming “everything from transportation to visa approval timelines”.
Read their full statement below:
“It pains us to announce that despite the best efforts if everyone in our band, our crew and the rest of the team, a number of logistical issues have forced us to cancel our upcoming North America tour.
“We had been looking forward to playing so many new songs for you, but everything from transportation to visa approval timelines and other hurdles have made the trip impossible at this stage. We recognise the last few years have been a challenging time for everyone and we were really excited to perform for you and share moments together that only live music can facilitate.
“We will announce new plans to return as soon as we can. The last thing we want to do is announce new dates that we will be unable to uphold.”

ARCHITECTS US tour rescheduled for 2022
The ARCHITECTS’ fall 2021 tour with POLYPHIA and LOATHE was supposed to begin in early November, however it has been postponed until 2022. However, it’s uncertain whether both special guests will return for next year’s makeup dates.
Architects announced the postponement on their social media platforms, informing fans that all previously purchased tickets for their 2021 gigs in support of their new album, For Those That Wish To Exist, will be honored at the new dates for next year. Those interested in purchasing tickets for any of the 2022 stops can do so starting at 9 a.m. tomorrow on the band’s website (Sept. 29).
Other rock and metal acts have decided to postpone their fall and winter tours till next year, mostly as a precaution as COVID-19 surges, spurred by the delta variation. ARCHITECTS, on the other hand, did not provide an explanation for the postponement.

Architects Plot North American Tour, Drop New Single
Metalcore group Architects just dropped a new single and a round of North American tour dates in 2024.
The nearly month-long trek will kick-off on May 2 at Toronto’s Rebel. From there, they’ll appear in Montreal, Philadelphia, Myrtle Beach, and Atlanta, making stops at Boston’s House of Blues, Marathon Music Works in Nashville, and The Riviera Theatre in Chicago before wrapping-up at the Royal Oak Music Theatre on May 18. The North American shows follow their previously-announced gigs across Europe in January and February, as well as festivals throughout the spring and summer months.
In addition to the forthcoming tour, the Sam Carter-fronted group also revealed a new single, “Seeing Red.” This is their first release since 2022’s the classic symptoms of a broken spirit , which featured popular tracks “when we were young,” “deep fake,” and “a new moral low ground.”
“We’re so happy to release ‘Seeing Red’ and to announce our US tour,” Carter said in a statement. “This marks another very important and exciting time for our band and we can’t wait to have rooms of people enjoy this song with us.”
Architects first arrived on the scene in 2006 with Nightmares , garnering attention with their breakout record Hollow Crown in 2009. They’ve since made a name for themselves with hits like “Animals,” “Impermanence,” and “Black Lungs” from 2021’s For Those That Wish To Exist , which scored the No. 1 spot on the UK charts.
Fans can score tickets to the upcoming run via secondary sites like MEGASeats (use code “TICKETNEWS” for 10% off your order), StubHub , or Ticket Club, where readers can obtain a free membership and avoid service fees with the code “TICKETNEWS.”

Interior Design: Lauren Ramirez Photographer Credit: Patrick Wong
This project is a major transformation of an existing home. The original was built in 1957 and consisted of an interesting structural frame for the lower level, consisting of Concrete masonry unit walls and piers, with inverted Concrete pans for the floor. The basement consisted of a sloped floor to deal with the natural drainage that crossed the site. The goal of the renovation was to update the home for a modern family of four, with a home office, new master suite and basement, second living area that would relate to the outdoors and a new pool. The critical structural features of the home were maintained, including a floating concrete staircase to the main entry, and a cantilevered back porch and bridge.
The original house had a small, enclosed kitchen, with a tiny view toward the back yard. The new kitchen inhabits an addition, and the original space was changed into the new dining area. All new windows open up the view to the City Skyline to the North, with the original stone fireplace anchoring the main living area.
An all-new master suite was added to the main floor, wrapping around the site to gain a spectacular view of the new pool and skyline. The master suite features reclaimed ship lap from the original structure as an accent wall with hidden lighting. The ship lap was also used to highlight the original structural system in the basement ceiling.
The basement was transformed into a second living, with kitchenette for entertaining around the pool. An addition forms a guest room and bath that also serves as a home office.

Creating unique, high-performance infill homes is a specialty of Newcastle Homes and Studio Momentum. 2602 South 3rd offered many challenges, but these challenges presented an opportunity to design and build something special, so we dove right into crafting this custom AEGB 5-Star certified home, pool and casita!
2602 South 3rd is an infill residential site in the eclectic and connected Galindo neighborhood in one of Austin’s hottest zip codes, 78704. The lot is irregularly-shaped with protected trees and challenging topography. These site constraints and the City of Austin’s infamous development code made this project very difficult, but having collaborated for over 10 years, Newcastle Homes and Studio Momentum successfully maximized every inch of this property to exceed expectations and provide maximum bang for buck without sacrificing style or performance.
At 3,048 square feet, with three bedrooms, three full baths and a powder room, with options for up to five bedrooms, 2602 South 3rd offers maximum flexibility and value in this spacious South Austin courtyard home. The connected indoor-outdoor living and dining area centered around the designer pool makes this the perfect entertaining layout while maintaining the indoor flow that makes a convenient everyday home.
The protected trees provide essential shade and, along with the casita, create the courtyard that unifies the indoor and outdoor living spaces, accessible from both the living room and the kitchen/dining through massive Western sliding doors. This space is designed to function as a “composed room” for living and entertaining that is centered on the custom pool. The third story provides extra room for living that can function in a multitude of ways – an extra bedroom, a studio, a media room, an office, play space, etc. Flexible spaces are a design principle for Newcastle Homes, allowing homeowners to get maximum use of a home now and in the future as families grow and change.
For Cameron Getter Designs, the furnishings and decor design aesthetic are modern-minimalist with a touch of industrial-bohemian, and an emphasis on texture in the furnishings, artwork and light fixtures. The kitchen design drove the direction for the downstairs furnishings, as accents of black and light to medium wood tones appear throughout, creating an even amount of contrast throughout the space. Collaborating with the homeowners, the color palette was developed through their original local art, setting the tone of a soft neutral palette. The aim was to achieve a sophisticated yet livable home, perfect for both entertaining and daily life.
Every aspect of 2602 South 3rd was carefully designed and crafted to provide a beautiful, functional, intuitive, space–the results speak for themselves!
Architect: Garwood Architecture Photographer Credit: Jamie Leasure / MA+DS
The Dip Cove residence is a luxury modern oasis nestled in a cul-de-sac in the Barton Hills neighborhood. This modern home with a separate guest apartment has five bedrooms, 4-full bathrooms, 2-half bathrooms and 2 full kitchens, all on an ultra-private and beautiful .42-acre lot.
Petrini Custom Builders and Garwood Architecture’s goal was for every aspect of the residence to surpass the quality found at any 5-star resort and spa. Integrated Miele appliances, Kallista fixtures, two steam rooms, plastered showers, European custom cabinetry and 20’x40’ infinity edge pool and spa are a few of the countless luxury amenities, materials, and finishes in this wonderful home.
The Dip Cove residence has the perfect blend of inside/outside living. Perfectly placed, energy efficient floor to ceiling doors and windows bring amazing natural light in during all hours of the day. The family room features a two-story glass wall looking out to the 20’x40’ resort quality pool and spa. The modern, 27,000-gallon swimming pool with integrated spa has an infinity edge that runs along the entire side of the home. The tiled walls of the pool shimmer when the sun touches it.
The sustainability and performance of build quality is nearly unparalleled. To achieve this, meticulous attention and expense is required for details that most people will never see. Executing details that aren’t visible when the home is finished is a true sign of quality. Air-sealing and insulation are at the forefront of this home’s design for ultimate comfort. The Dip Cove residence’s entire exterior and roof has 2” thick energy shield polyiso insulation. The majority of homes do not have this. The three separate HVAC and dehumidification systems have superior filtration and incredible air-sealing which provides the perfect interior climate while requiring minimal energy. Zero VOC paint, glue and materials were used as a further commitment to longstanding healthy building principals.
The home can be as connected or disconnected as the owner prefers. A 400-amp electrical service allows for multiple electric vehicles to charge rapidly. About one mile of CAT-5e cable runs from a hidden media room to 55 locations around the residence and supports 1 gigabyte per second network operating speeds. The 55 locations include (many) exterior security cameras and ethernet connections in each room. Disconnecting entirely from Wi-Fi is an option.
While every feature of the house could have its own highlight, it’s the level of detail throughout that sets this home apart. All interior drywall is level five finish, and this home has recessed, modern trim detail throughout. Custom European cabinetry was designed and manufactured by Austin-based Siena Custom Cabinetry for every room in the house.

This home is a masterpiece of effortless unity and understated elegance.
Resting on a large corner lot, this breathtaking modern design takes full advantage of the natural beauty of the Bouldin Creek neighborhood. Its floor-to-ceiling windows and complementary physical elements aim to lessen distinctions between indoor and outdoor spaces, blending these separate areas into a seamless living experience.
Like every Joseph home, the space was designed first and foremost to maximize function and livability. Our world-class architects are always focused on creating practical residences that feel as good as they look, and, as a result, the living areas were carefully arranged to promote convenience and comfort.
The entire second floor is dedicated to an enormous primary suite, complete with an oversized bathroom spa, walk-in closet, and balcony. This intimate enclave leads directly to the third-floor rooftop deck, which itself features incredible views of the downtown Austin area.
On the ground floor, the kitchen and living room sit clustered together to ensure easy movement and natural cohesion. There, the beautiful wall of windows provides a continual connection to the exterior, and the surrounding landscape was carefully cultivated to maximize this union.
In many places the brick accents meld directly into the outside paneling, further emphasizing this fusion of inside and out. No matter where you stand, the flow of energy invites you to turn your attention towards the pool and backyard, and this deliberate continuity is fundamental to the design and feel of the home.
Alongside those living spaces are the guest suite and two-car garage, which round out the rest of the lower area.
The Live Oak project also features several luxury amenities, including an elevator, brick fireplace, and intimate backyard pool. These important features help elevate the overall quality of the home, while providing practical, everyday value.
From a construction perspective, the project itself features a tasteful combination of high-quality glass, cedar, and brick — expertly employed to minimize unwanted distractions.
This synergy between design, material, and space is ultimately what makes the Live Oak so unique.

You’ll love this bright, naturally lit Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) because it’s small – but mighty!
Sized to preserve the development potential of the front house and situated for privacy and access from the busy corner lot off Berkman Dr., this ADU was designed for Modern Electric one of Moontower’s long standing trade relationships.
Moontower jumped on the opportunity to collaborate with an old friend and add density to this lot, adjacent to a bus route, and in a rapidly developing part of East Austin. The resulting clean lined one-story home was executed with a minimal pallet organized along a tall, white, smooth stucco wall. Skylights situated along the wall reflect light throughout both the sleeping and living spaces connected by a hall which conceals a half bath and laundry closet. Narrow windows facing East and West are contrasted by floor to ceiling glass facing a private courtyard to the North.

A twist for the view:
Perched on a hill in Clarksville that boasts a sweeping view of the downtown Austin skyline, this modern home was a long-awaited dream-come-true for the owners. After acquiring the land in 2017, the client interviewed many firms before landing on a design/build arrangement with Workshop No5 and Mosier Luxury Homes. The highly collaborative team of architect, builder and owner developed the three-bedroom, 3 ½ bath home to maximize the beautiful view for entertaining and create privacy for family life.
Using the east-facing downtown view as an organizing element, the design orients views from public spaces and the owners’ suite toward the distant skyline. The house expresses a distinctly modern vibe – with a twist. Its industrial aesthetic is warmed by a material palette of stucco, wood, and Hardiboard. At the street level, the stucco volume containing the dining area – and a large window – is pushed forward, framed by Ipe-clad volumes that recede on either side and house the garage and the front entry. The modern, orthogonal ground floor box is topped by another sleek volume turned on a central axis to balance diagonally and accommodate a large upstairs balcony. Deeply cantilevered roofs for the ground level and first floor volumes help settle the dynamic structure and provide generous sun protection for outdoor spaces.
The open concept interiors are experienced as a sequence of spaces, with living and dining engaged with the view of downtown and the kitchen oriented toward the backyard, a private sanctuary with a dining patio, outdoor kitchen, and planter boxes for the home garden. A sliding glass door creates a seamless connection and allows for easy movement between inside and out. The open kitchen’s central placement invites congregating during parties, a large circular light fixture above the island creating a visual focal point. The U-shaped island’s striking blue cabinets are encased under a sleek quartzite counter that wraps vertically down the central edge, creating an elegant, refined finish.
A guest suite is separated from the public spaces by a sun-lit wood-clad tower that houses a floating staircase. Upstairs, the main entertaining space opens to the balcony facing downtown and is flanked by the master suite and a bedroom. A private balcony facing the backyard and anchored off the owners’ suite extends the master bath to include an outdoor shower. Ivy on the slatted wall provides full privacy.
The collaborative design process and thoughtful choices of interior finishes and fixtures create an economical and efficient, yet completely custom solution.

Located on a quiet street in the Tarrytown neighborhood of Austin, this 3,700 square foot home maximizes a challenging lot while executing beautiful modern design. The sloping lot required ADA access, and a large heritage tree in the middle of the property presented a challenge. To accommodate the tree, a 2-car garage design was modified to an office space alongside a single-car garage with a lift. The entry leads up to a gallery space which opens to the main living/dining/kitchen area anchored by a stunning 400-gallon custom aquarium. The floating glass staircase rises above a lighted wine display and up to a sitting area atop a unique glass floor which looks down onto a small courtyard. This quiet courtyard was designed to break up the long hallway and open up the gallery space. Extensive glazing lets in ample natural light and multiple sliding glass doors at the side and rear of the home allow for easy access to the oversized outdoor living area. The outdoor living incorporates a misting system on the porch and throughout the private backyard oasis.
Despite the design challenges, this contemporary home provides comfortable living spaces with unique features while finding a niche in this traditional, yet evolving, central Austin neighborhood.
Architect: Jair Gonzalez Photographer Credit: Allison Cartwright, Twist Tours
This is a true architectural modern masterpiece designed and built by architect Jair Gonzalez’s as his personal home. No expense spared in the original construction of this exquisite, light-filled dwelling and the recent remodel/addition by current owner has taken it to the next level with the addition of a second study, outdoor cooking center, site/yard development and expansion of rooftop deck, plus additional staircase, and pneumatic elevator. The dramatic, restaurant-style kitchen with honed Carrera marble and primary bath and closet renovations are exceptional. The loft like open spaces with floor to ceiling commercial glass and expansive windows bring the outdoors inside throughout, perfecting a stunning treehouse feel. The very architectural interiors include a custom fabricated steel staircase, media center in great room, 8ft masonry fireplace, and quarter sawn white oak floors. One of-a-kind historic fixtures were thoughtfully restored and reclaimed from NYC’s Grand Central Station, as well as brass bathroom fixtures from George Gershwin’s personal home.
Architect: Point B Design Group Photographer Credit: Chase Daniel
Carved voids in the volume which are anchored by the masonry stair, create subtle plays with indoor and outdoor. The dining room opens to a covered outdoor space created by the plane of the second floor above. The masonry of the stair extends to the interior and is seen at the entry and the dining. Orientation for sunrise views, maximizing bang for the buck, and balancing stark modern with hill country vernacular were in the forefront while designing. perfecting a stunning treehouse feel.

State & Pedregosa Architect: Thomas Ochsner Architect Photographer: Jim Bartsch
Located at the southwest corner of State Street and Pedregosa, this .4 acre lot was once a gas station. The owners waited almost twenty years for the passive soil contamination to reach a level appropriate for development. Representing the north entrance of the El Pueblo Viejo district, the desire to embrace Santa Barbara’s Spanish colonial heritage style was important.
The project is a mixture of residential duplexes and a small commercial building.
Romero Canyon Architect: Studio William Hefner Photographer: Laura Hull
This single-family residence sits about two miles from the coastline in Montecito, California. Organized around a large central courtyard with a pool, the compound’s four structures include a single-story residence, a pool cabana, a recreational structure and a two-car garage. The buildings are carefully sited around several large existing oak trees and oriented to take advantage of sweeping views of the Santa Ynez Mountains.
Pepper Lane Architect: Thomas Ochsner Architect Photographer: Jim Bartsch
Designed to bring the outside in, this residence was under construction for a major remodel when the Montecito mud flow nearly destroyed it. The residence was originally constructed in 1978 as a modest 3 bedroom French influenced contemporary. The new design reconfigured the dated architectural forms and compartmentalized floor plan into open interior spaces that seamlessly flow to the outside. This included creating one level throughout all indoor and outdoor spaces for easy living, allowing the creek setting and landscaping to be felt from the interior. The new program included an ADU and pool pavilion sited to create a sense of subtle enclosure to the pool area.
The structure was only a few months into the construction phase when the mudslide wiped out just under half of the structure. The project rose out of the mud with a greater respect for nature and an emphasis on landforms to help protect the property from similar events in the future.
Edge House Architect: Winick Architects, Inc.. Photographer: Erin Feinblatt
The Edge House enjoys a vast Pacific Ocean panoramic setting blending the magnificent cliff with a modern/vernacular sculptural expression enhanced by the kinetic play of light, shade and projected shadow. The project brief was a graceful generous invitation from the clients requesting a beach home that would not only be a relaxing retreat but an intentional work of art. Equally important in the description was for the house to sit atop the face of the shear cliff with deference to its the natural beauty.
Cabrillo Commercial Complex Architect: DMHA Architecture + Interior Design, in association with Henry Lenny Design Photographer: Erin Feinblatt
Bringing new life to the beachfront gateway of Santa Barbara, the Cabrillo Commercial Complex project transformed and revitalized a neglected existing structure on a prominent Cabrillo waterfront site. Home to an aging restaurant for 30 years, the Cabrillo Commercial Complex renovation project involved breathing new life back into an existing, deteriorating building on a prominent site.
The historic structure that had been hidden beneath the surface was uncovered, while adding improvements to create two new vibrant restaurants with a commanding presence on beachfront Cabrillo Boulevard. Remaining true to the architectural style of downtown Santa Barbara, layering of lighting and natural materials combine to create a dynamic exterior and interior dining experience adjacent to a historic waterfront setting.
Casa Anatega Architect: Cearnal Collective, LLP Photographer: Blake Bronstad
Casa Anatega is a Spanish Colonial Revival style mixed use development located at the corner of Anacapa and Ortega Streets in downtown Santa Barbara. 30 residential units sit above nearly 5,000 square feet of commercial/retail/restaurant space and a 32-space parking garage.
The nearly ½ acre site, categorized as a Priority Housing location under the City of Santa Barbara’s Average Unit-Size Density (AUD) Program which allows for a maximum of 63 units/acre, was a prime opportunity to generate much needed housing. Situated in downtown and only one block from State Street, the dilapidated existing buildings (a single-family residence and several industrial buildings) were a vast underutilization of the site.
Mayee Plaza Architect: Cearnal Collective, LLP Photographer: Blake Bronstad
This mixed-use development is located in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara. The project added 4,800 square feet of commercial space, now home to the Radius Group’s new offices, and 26 efficiency housing units under the City of Santa Barbara’s Average Unit-Size Density (AUD) Program.
The building is comprised of a central two-story Monterey style building ensconced on the surrounding sides by three-story Spanish Colonial style apartment housing. Beneath it all is a partially- subterranean parking garage that features automated parking lifts in order to provide maximum parking in the minimum amount of space. This unique footprint was driven by two key existing assets on the site – the 1875 historic “Ygnacio House”, a recent City of Santa Barbara Landmark that was home to the last speaker of the Barbareño Chumash language, and a glorious oak tree that now shades the common outdoor living space.
Appleton Partners LLP Offices & Marc Appleton Library Architect: Appleton Partners LLP Photographer: Appleton Partners LLP
The new location of the office and architectural library of Appleton Partners LLP, Architects is rich in history. In 1931, descendants of Colonel William Wells Hollister, hired architectural firm Edwards and Plunkett to design a Spanish Colonial styled brick building with porches and open garage for their family’s office.
Exclusive to tour participants: Book signing with Marc Appleton 11am – 12 pm.
Modern Farmhouse Renovation Architect: Bildsten Architecture and Planning Photographer: Jason Rick
An adventurous couple bought this historic house on Olive Street which was in need of significant repair and improvement. No new square footage was added to the house but portions were rearranged and simplified to meet their preferences for a more open floor plan and stronger connections to the outdoors. The most significant interior change was the kitchen, which moved from a disconnected rear location in the house to the area adjacent to the living spaces for a more integrated plan. There were mechanical, electrical, plumbing and structural helical pier foundation upgrades throughout the house. Other renovation areas include the primary bedroom, bath, closet and laundry area while additional storage was created in under-utilized closets and under the stair
