There are numerous options for getting from Vancouver Airport to Downtown Vancouver, ranging from public transit to taxis and private limousine services. We outline the various options below, starting with our #1 recommendation: Vancouver SkyTrain - Airport to Downtown. It is less expensive and faster than a taxi or limo.

Vancouver SkyTrain - Airport to Downtown

Ever since the 2010 Winter Olympics, Vancouver Airport transportation has been much easier, thanks to the Canada Line, an integral part the of Vancouver Skytrain System . Without transferring, you can get from Vancouver International Airport to Vancouver City Centre Station in just 24 minutes! The SkyTrain station is directly connected to the airport terminal. The modern air conditioned trains run along an elevated track and over a bridge before descending below grade for the rest of the trip into downtown Vancouver.

Canada Line trains operate at 6—7 minute intervals midday and peak hours, 12 minute intervals during the early morning and evening, dropping to 20 minutes as the night progresses. The first train departs YVR for Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver at 5:10 AM; the last, at 12:57 AM.

An additional $5.00 is added to single ticket fares from Vancouver Airport, but you can avoid this by purchasing a Compass Card and loading it with a day pass or stored value at the start of your trip.

Fares can be purchased from ticket vending machines at the station entrance or at the 7-Eleven or Pharmasave store located on Level 1 of the domestic terminal.

If you are buying a single adult ticket you don't need to go to a ticket machine. Save time and go paperless: you can tap your contactless debit or credit card right at the fare gate. Interac, Amex, Mastercard, and Visa are accepted. It's a convenient and environment-friendly option for single travelers. For more information see the contactless payment section on our fares page.

Major transfer points include Bridgeport Station where you can transfer to Richmond BC or take an express bus to the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal and Waterfront Station where you can transfer to the Expo Line or connect to the SeaBus which crosses Vancouver Harbour to North Vancouver.

Getting from Vancouver Airport to Downtown by Taxi

There's a continuous queue of taxis waiting outside the arrivals level at YVR that will take you downtown, or nearly anywhere else you may wish to travel. Getting from Vancouver Airport to downtown by taxi is more expensive than the Canada Line, however, the price per person goes down when sharing a cab with additional passengers, becoming comparable when three or more are sharing.  It will usually take longer than the train, except late at night when traffic is light.

Be sure to ask your driver up front if you can pay by credit card (unless you plan to pay with cash).  There are frequent reports of taxi drivers not accepting credit cards, even though they are supposed to.

Taxi Fares from Vancouver Airport to Downtown

Taxi fares from Vancouver Airport are regulated by a zone system with fares ranging from $20 to $43. Trips to downtown Vancouver fall near the top end of the range — between $34 and $41 including GST. UBER and Lyft

As of January 2020, UBER and Lyft have been approved to operate throughout Greater Vancouver.

Navigating from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) to the vibrant heart of downtown Vancouver was an integral part of my recent journey to this bustling west coast city.

Vancouver, known for its stunning natural beauty and cosmopolitan allure, offers a variety of efficient and user-friendly transportation options for this essential transit.

Here’s a comprehensive guide based on my firsthand experience, designed to help you choose the best mode of transportation according to your preferences, budget, and travel style.

SkyTrain – Canada Line

My Choice and Why : The Canada Line of the SkyTrain system was my top pick for transportation. Not only is it cost-effective and efficient, but it also provides a scenic route into the city.

The Canada Line directly connects YVR to downtown Vancouver, with a travel time of approximately 25 minutes to Waterfront Station, the line’s terminus that sits at the edge of downtown.

Experience : The process was straightforward. Signage within the airport guided me to the Canada Line station, located between the domestic and international terminals.

The trains run every 6 to 20 minutes, depending on the time of day. I purchased a Compass Card from the automated kiosks at the station, which also offered single-use tickets.

The fare from YVR to downtown varies depending on the time of day, with an additional AddFare for airport departures.

Riding the Canada Line provided a comfortable and quick entry into the city, offering glimpses of Vancouver’s diverse neighborhoods along the way.

Taxi Services

Overview : Taxis offer a direct and convenient way to get from YVR to downtown Vancouver. Taxi stands are well-marked and located just outside the arrivals area.

Experience : While I opted for the SkyTrain, I noticed that taxis were readily available, offering a hassle-free option for travelers.

The journey to downtown takes about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic. Taxi fares are metered, with an approximate cost that varies but provides a straightforward, albeit more expensive, alternative to public transit.

For those traveling in groups or with significant luggage, a taxi could offer value through convenience and speed.

Ride-Sharing Services

Overview : Ride-sharing services, such as Uber and Lyft, are operational in Vancouver and available for pickups at YVR.

Experience : On a previous visit, I used a ride-sharing service for my transit needs. The pickup area for ride-sharing is clearly indicated at the airport.

The app provided an estimated fare and wait time, making it a convenient option for reaching downtown.

The cost is competitive with taxis and can be a preferred choice for its ease of use and the comfort of ride-sharing vehicles.

Car Rentals

Overview : For travelers preferring the flexibility of their own vehicle, several car rental agencies operate at YVR.

Experience : Car rental kiosks are located near the airport’s arrivals level. While I didn’t rent a car this trip, renting offers the freedom to explore Vancouver and its surroundings at your leisure.

Remember, downtown parking can be pricey and scarce, so consider this if planning to spend most of your time in the city center.

Airport Shuttles and Limousines

Overview : For a more luxurious or group-oriented approach, private shuttles and limousines are available for hire at YVR.

Experience : Although I did not personally use these services, they can be an excellent option for larger groups or those seeking a more upscale experience.

Booking in advance is advisable, ensuring your ride is ready upon arrival.

Tips for a Smooth Transit from YVR to Downtown Vancouver

• Plan According to Your Schedule : If arriving late at night or with tight time constraints, taxis or ride-sharing may be more reliable than public transit.
• Consider Your Luggage : The SkyTrain is convenient and efficient but navigating public transit with heavy luggage during peak hours can be challenging.
• Stay Informed : Check for any transit updates or changes in service, especially during holidays or significant events.
• Budget Accordingly : Choose the option that best fits your budget and travel needs. The SkyTrain offers great value, but taxis or ride-sharing provide added convenience.

My journey from Vancouver International Airport to downtown was smooth and hassle-free, thanks to Vancouver’s excellent transportation infrastructure.

The Canada Line was an ideal choice for me, balancing cost, convenience, and speed. However, Vancouver’s array of transit options ensures that every traveler can find a route that suits their needs, from the efficiency of public transit to the comfort of a private car.

No matter how you choose to travel, Vancouver’s welcoming spirit is evident from the moment you arrive, making the journey from YVR to downtown an enjoyable start to your visit.

The  Vancouver International Airport   — also known as  YVR  (the specific code for Vancouver International Airport) — is actually located in Richmond, BC, about 30 minutes south (by car) from downtown Vancouver. Served by its own SkyTrain rapid transit line, called the Canada Line, the airport is easy to reach via public transit or private transfers.

There are many options for getting to and from the Vancouver Airport:

Canada Line Rapid Transit

The easiest way to get to and from the airport is the  Canada Line  rapid transit system, which runs north-south from YVR to Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver. There is a Canada Line station at the airport that is easy to access — signs are clearly marked to help you walk to and from the Canada Line YVR platform — and the SkyTrain runs daily from 5am to 1am. Canada Line trains can take you all the way to Waterfront Station in the heart of Vancouver, which is also close to the Cruise Terminal at Canada Place. 

Public Buses

TransLink, which runs Vancouver's public transit, has  online planning tools  that allow you plan your trip to or from the Vancouver Airport by bus. This option may double or triple your travel time, so take that into account when you're planning your journey. If possible, take a bus to the Canada Line (see above) for faster travel. Waterfront, City Centre, Yaletown and Broadway-City Hall Canada Line stations are all on major bus routes. See also:  Guide to Vancouver Public Transit .

Private Buses & Shuttles

Cheaper than taxis, but also less convenient, there are private bus companies with stops at the Vancouver Airport.  Quick Shuttle  makes stops in downtown Vancouver (near the major hotels) and at YVR. If you are staying at a hotel in Vancouver, ask your concierge if the hotel has its own airport shuttle service, as this may be more convenient. 

If you arrive at the airport after 1am, but before 5am, the Canada Line isn't going to be an available option for you. But, like all airports, there are plenty of  taxis waiting outside baggage claim to take you to your destination. These taxis are safe and well-regulated. A taxi from the airport to downtown Vancouver is about $40, depending on traffic.

Ask your driver for an estimate before you accept a ride. There are set rates for different areas of Vancouver, so take a look at the map in the taxi to find out how much your trip will cost before you leave. 

Note: While Vancouver may get Uber in 2018 (or another future date), there is currently no Uber available in Vancouver, BC.

If you're dropping someone off or picking someone up at Vancouver International Airport, taking your own car is the simplest option as there are spaces to pull in and say a quick hello or goodbye. To park overnight or for several days at YVR, there is YVR's jetSet parking . The jetSet Parking site lets you book ahead online and will give you a quote for your parking costs. The longer you park, the better the value. One night runs about $25, but one week (a Monday to a Monday) runs around $70 (depending on travel dates).  Discounts are available for AAA members. 

Getting to Whistler from Vancouver International Airport

Whistler, BC , is only about 2.5 hours (by car) from the Vancouver International Airport. There are several options for getting to Whistler from YVR:

• The  YVR Whistler SkyLynx bus  runs from 8:30am and 9pm, and is the "official" bus to and from YVR to Whistler; it leaves from the airport. Find step-by-step instructions on the website. 
• The Whistler Shuttle is a private service that runs from 8:30am to 11:30pm in winter and 8am to 8pm in summer (April-November). Timings are based on your flight arrival/departure times. 
• If your flight arrives after 10pm, you will need a late-night transfer. Ride Booker has info on late-night ride share vans and other late-night options. Some options can be expensive, so plan well in advance!

How to get from YVR (Vancouver Airport) to downtown Vancouver

Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is located approximately 12 km from downtown Vancouver. There are several easy transportation options available to get from the airport to the city centre.

Public Transit

The Canada Line is Vancouver’s rapid transit rail system that connects YVR to downtown Vancouver in under 30 minutes and to downtown Richmond in 18 minutes. Skytrain Trains leave the airport station approximately every seven minutes during most times of the day ( click here for a schedule and map ). The trip from YVR to downtown Vancouver takes only 26 minutes on a two-zone fare of $4.55, plus the $5.00 Canada Line YVR AddFare. The YVR AddFare fee is charged on tickets FROM YVR, but not on tickets TO YVR. You can buy a ticket at the station, or simply use any contactless credit/debit card to swipe in and out at the automatic gates. The YVR AddFare may be waived if you have a pre-purchased fare, e.g. a day pass or stored value on a Compass Card.

Taxis and Shuttles

Taxis are available at the taxi stands located at Level 2 Arrivals directly in front of Domestic Terminal and the International Terminal. A taxi from Vancouver International Airport to downtown Vancouver costs from CAD 38, excluding tips.

Courtesy shuttle buses provide transportation to many of the local hotels, Airport South, and YVR JetSet Parking. Follow the signs at Level 2 Arrivals to be directed to the appropriate pick-up location.

Several shuttle services are available from YVR to downtown Vancouver, including the Vancouver Airport Shuttle, which starts at CAD 15 per person.

Ride-sharing Services – Uber, Lyft, KABU

All three local ride-sharing services, Uber, Lyft and KABU are licensed to pick-up and drop off at YVR. Once you have ordered your car using the relevant app, proceed outside Level 2 Arrivals to the marked pick-up area. It is after the taxi area and clearly marked on green signs.

Car Rentals

Major car rental companies have desks at YVR, so hiring and returning your rental car is easy and convenient. The majority of well-known rental companies are located steps away from the terminal on the ground floor of the parking area. Some smaller providers are a bus-ride away. Remember to include time in your schedule for pick-up/drop-off as you may need to take a short shuttle bus ride to the rental station. Find out which is where by clicking here .

The Canada Line Skytrain is by far the most convenient and affordable option to get from Vancouver Airport to downtown Vancouver. If for other reasons you need a taxi, shuttle or car rental, those are available too.

Getting from Vancouver International Airport to Downtown

Public transportation

Both the International and Domestic terminals are served by the YVR–Airport Station of the Canada Line . To get there from the Domestic terminal, go to level 3 and walk towards the Link Building (which is located between the two terminals)  and then follow the signs towards the Canada Line.

From the International terminal, after clearing customs and immigration, walk toward the exit to the International Arrivals Greeting Area. Exit the building and follow the signs marked Canada Line, towards the parking garage. Just before the garage entrance, take the escalator up to the platform. The station is pretty well-marked and it would be difficult to get to lost, but look for one of the green-jacketed YVR greeters throughout the airport if you need help.

Once on the platform, you’ll need to buy a ticket using the vending machine: cash and credit cards are accepted. If you’re headed downtown, it’ll be a 2-zone ticket, which costs $8.75.  Trains run every 6-10 minutes from 5:10am until 12:57 am.

For your return trip:  if you plan on riding public transportation (bus, Seabus, or SkyTrain) several times on your trip, opt for a book of 10 (2 zone) Fare Saver tickets for $31.50,  for a per-trip cost of only $3.15.

Shuttle buses

Courtesy shuttles service several Richmond hotels and two Vancouver Airport hotels. Aeroshuttle also provides shuttle service to downtown hotels starting at $15.50 per adult (one way), which is useful if you will be bringing a lot of bags and don’t want to hassle with public transportation, or if your hotel is far from a Canada Line station. No reservation is required; just head to the ground transportation area (level 2) of either terminal.

Taxis are a convenient way to travel from the airport to downtown, but if you’re on your own, they are the most expensive option. The fare will be between $28 and $32, so it’s a good deal if you are traveling with a few other people, or are arriving or departing very late at night.

How to Go to Victoria from Vancouver by Ferry

BC Ferries is a publicly owned corporation that operates the main ferry service between Vancouver and Vancouver Island.

They have two terminals in the Metro Vancouver area: Horseshoe Bay and Tsawwassen .

If you’re heading to Victoria (Swartz Bay Terminal), you must travel via Tsawwassen Terminal, as Horseshoe Bay does not offer service between Vancouver and Victoria.

Tsawwassen Terminal

Located 37 km south of Downtown Vancouver, Tsawwassen Terminal is just 500 meters from the US Border and is the largest ferry terminal in North America .

How long is the ferry from Vancouver to Victoria? From Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay, it takes an hour and thirty-five minutes. Then it takes an additional 40 minutes to get to Downtown Victoria.

There are three transportation options to choose from to get from Downtown Vancouver to Tsawwassen Terminal:

• Driving : Most convenient, efficient, and cost-effective for families. Follow the route on Google Maps , and you’ll be there in 35 minutes.
• Public Transit : The most cost-effective way involves the Canada Line of Skytrain to Brighouse, then bus #620 to Tsawassen.
• Bus : The BC Ferries Connector offers service from downtown Vancouver or Vancouver International Airport directly to Victoria via Tsawwassen Terminal. If you don’t have a car, this is your best choice.

Vancouver to Victoria with Public Transit

I touched on this earlier in the ferry section – but let’s break this down step by step.

Public transit is the cheapest way to get to our provincial capital. In fact, it can be done for under $30.00 using the local bus network and then boarding the ferry as a foot passenger.

This 4-step process requires payment of 3 separate fares .

Public Transport Directions:

• Board the Canada Line in Downtown Vancouver and purchase a two-zone fare ($4.45 or $3.65 with Compass Card)
• Head South towards Richmond-Brighouse or YVR and get off at Bridgeport Station.  (This should take around 20 min).
• Walk down the stairs towards the bus loop, take a right and walk until the end of the platform to locate bay 12 , which services the #620 Tsawassen  bus. Board and continue until Tsawwassen; your fare is still good!
• Disembark at the terminus stop and walk into the terminal building. The journey should take around 40 minutes.
• Purchase your ticket for Victoria from a cashier or machine ($18.50 for adults, $9.25 for seniors and children).
• Board the ferry when called. A sailing takes about an hour and forty minutes.
• Upon arrival at Swartz Bay, collect your bags, follow the signs outside the terminal to the bus stop, and board the #70 Downtown Express bus . Pay your fare ($2.50) and continue to Downtown Victoria. It’ll take about an hour.

Hi ,can the major tourist attractions of Victoria be covered in 1 day?

Provided you’ve rented a car and can easily move from one place to another without having to rely on a less than efficient public transport system, I would say you can definitely visit the most important things in one day 🙂

Hi Ash, we will be renting a car for self drive to Whistler-Jasper-Banff. Do you have any car rental company recommendation for car rental at downtown Vancouver?

If you’re doing long distance rentals then I always recommend Enterprise as it’s got the best prices/customer service. Their downtown office is closed but they’ve got one in Olympic Village, which is just minutes away from downtown.

Would it be crazy to bicycle from Vancouver (after flying in to the airport the day before & finding overnight lodging) to the ferry terminal? And then from Victoria Island’s terminal into Victoria?

Honestly, there won’t be any bike specific lanes for most of these trips. If you’re used to road biking it shouldn’t be that bad as there are not any massive hills between Vancouver and the ferry terminal , nor on the other side.

I wouldn’t want to do it but I am sure hardcore bikers wouldn’t have a problem!

Irse por si mismo es posible – es lo mas economico pero al final es un rollo de 3 metodos de trasporte diferentes y puede tardar una horita mas en llegar. Si tuviera el dinero me compraria el billete que incluye el bus! Al final lo que decide usted depende de su presupuesto.
