Bands: great. venue: oversold..

Cannibal Corpse, Mayhem, and Gorguts were all in fine form. If you like Florida death and Norwegian black, this show gave you all you wanted. However, the room was disconcertingly crowded, to the point where moving anywhere at all--to the bar, to the bathroom, just to stretch the legs--was an ordeal. And, frankly, to the point where an emergency evacuation would have been a serious safety problem. I estimate there were about 200 people too many, and while I'm glad CC can still pack the place, it was too packed for comfort.

head banging dark and amazing

Then four bands that played all were amazing. I was not as familiar with Goreguts and Blood Incantations music , but they were amazing. I really want to check out BI on some good headphones! Mayhem- bucket list , did not disappointment. Infamous ! I was amazed at how good they were. Hellhammer banging the drums, Necrobutcher, Gul Attila and Teloch, all did phenomenal. Cannibal Corpse- 4th time seeing them, they never disappointment. Due to time constraints Corpsegrinder wasn't able to taunt the crowd like he usually does! I still loved it ! Cant wait to see them all again!

Kid friendly

Took my granddaughters eight and 10 years old and they loved it. Gorguts was great. Mayham was amazing and Cannibal Corpse never disappoints since I have the kiddos I didn’t get to mosh but can’t complain when exposing the next generation

Absolutely Amazing!🤩

Was an amazing experience very beautiful place good view from every point and big bar with several servers so everyone gets to buy drinks without waiting too much

Way too many people

This show was extremely oversold. The line for the merch booth was over an hour long. Very limited viewing. No egress paths anywhere throughout. Not a good venue. Music, from what I could hear, not see, was great

Great bands, awful venue/seats

How do you not have any standing room to watch metal bands? People do not want to sit in a metal show, and especially the balcony seats ate not designed for this type of show. The employees walking around would interfere with the view, as well as people getting up for the bathroom, or for the conceasion stands. Music and sound was good, everything else about the venue was not properly done.

Amazing! With one problem

The overall show was fantastic, the only thing there was unfortunate was that it started too early. I ended up missing Blood Incantation and the beginning of Gorguts. It hardly gave me any time to get out of work and to the show

They were amazing

From start to finish they play an amazing set, loved the atmosphere and was worth the money to see them

Blood Incantation opened the show. Sound was a bit muddy, but great performance. Gorguts was next. Was very surprised at how clean and tight they sounded. Phenomenal performance. Mayhem next. Not my thing, performance was very cool visually. Nephew loved them. Cannibal Corpse is a tremendous live band. I have nothing negative to say. Exceeded my expectations. Sound was great. Set list was cool. Only issue was Cannibal Corpse’s set time was too short for me. Great, great night and show.

Absolutely amazing metal show. All the bands were incredible

Cannibal Corpse Book Late 2022 Tour With Dark Funeral, Immolation + Black Anvil

Cannibal Corpse are set to pulverize the U.S. and Canada on a headlining late 2022 tour, which will also feature Dark Funeral , Immolation and Black Anvil .

They'll be touting last year's  Violence Unimagined , their first with Hate Eternal guitarist and longtime Cannibal Corpse producer Erik Rutan on guitar and one that dealt death in new ways with heaving new standouts in "Inhuman Harvest," "Murderous Rampage" and more.

Meanwhile, both Immolation and Dark Funeral dished out new records already this year —  We Are the Apocalypse and  Acts of God , respectively. Opener Black Anvil, who already completed a series of tour dates this year with Immolation, are still riding strong on the back of 2019's  Miles EP and their last full length, 2017's  As Was .

The trek begins on Nov. 3 in Maryland and will wrap up over one month later on Dec. 10 in Florida. Along the way is a stop at the Denver installment of the Decibel Metal & Beer Festival, which will be held on Dec. 2 and 3.

Get more info on the fest here and view the complete list of tour dates below. Look for tickets to go on sale on July 22 at 10AM local time and visit the Cannibal Corpse website to purchase.

Cannibal Corpse Announces Headlining Tour with Dark Funeral and Ingested

Alex de Borba

Alex de Borba

Cannibal Corpse has unveiled a mammoth headlining tour across Europe. The tour commenced in Hengelo, Netherlands, on March 10th and will sweep through 15 countries, including five United Kingdom dates, before concluding at Nottingham, Rock City, United Kingdom, on April 23rd. The band is touring with Dark Funeral , Ingested, and Stormruler, making it an unmissable event for metal enthusiasts.

Cannibal Corpse is a highly regarded death metal ensemble hailing from Buffalo, New York, formed in 1988, that has garnered immense acclaim and wielded substantial impact within the extreme metal scene. The group consisted of Bob Rusay on guitar, Alex Webster on bass, and Paul Mazurkiewicz on drums, later enlisted Chris Barnes as their vocalist and Jack Owen as a guitarist.

Cannibal Corpse is acknowledged for their savage and radical music, as well as their controversial lyrics and album visuals. Despite the divisive reputation they hold, Cannibal Corpse has persevered as a staple of the extreme metal genre, and their influence is evident in countless groups that have emulated their style.

The group’s early musical output was distinguished by potent and fierce guitar licks and unrefined, guttural vocals that often explored themes of brutality, bloodshed, and mortality. Despite the polarizing nature of their lyrics and visuals, which drew criticism from certain quarters, the band cultivated a loyal following who were entranced by their unwavering brutality and musical prowess.

A prominent feature of Cannibal Corpse’s discography is the unwavering consistency of their sonic trademark throughout their journey. Despite experiencing several personnel changes and the departure of several crucial members, the group has maintained a unique sound that is instantly recognizable to their fanbase. This is primarily due to the input of Alex Webster, the band’s originator and bassist, whose elaborate basslines and virtuoso precision have played a pivotal role in molding the band’s musical identity.

Cannibal Corpse’s continuous success and acclaim can be largely attributed to their partnership with Metal Blade Records , a record label that has played an instrumental role in shaping the metal genre since it was founded by Brian Slagel in 1982. Regarded as a major player in the metal scene, Metal Blade Records has fervently supported and championed many bands, including Cannibal Corpse. Metal Blade Records has been an essential catalyst in the growth and evolution of the extreme metal landscape, shaping the sonic and visual aspects of the genre. As a vanguard of the metal scene, the record label has steadfastly supported underground metal and independent artists, providing a platform for numerous bands to attain greater visibility and acclaim.

Following the signing of a contract with Metal Blade Records in 1990, the group unveiled their debut studio album, ‘Eaten Back to Life,’ which expeditiously established their reputation as a potent force in the underground metal circuit.

Cannibal Corpse’s early studio releases, including ‘ Butchered at Birth ’ (1991) and ‘Tomb of the Mutilated’ (1992), stirred significant uproar due to their starkly explicit lyrics and album artwork. Nonetheless, instead of impeding their rise, this uproar amplified their infamy, catapulting them to the upper echelons of acclaim and reverence within the death metal realm.

In 1995, Cannibal Corpse experienced a significant alteration in their lineup when lead singer Chris Barnes departed from the group to create his own project, Six Feet Under . Barnes played a vital role in the band’s early achievements, utilizing his distinctive singing technique and provocative lyrics to cement the band’s reputation as one of the most radical and contentious acts in the metal genre. Despite this setback, the band was able to rebound quickly and recruited George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher as their new frontman. Fisher’s distinctive vocal style and dynamic stage presence have since become an integral part of the band’s identity.

Admittedly, Chris Barnes is acknowledged as the groundbreaking frontman of Cannibal Corpse, whose unique vocal style and controversial lyrics were instrumental in boosting the band’s infamy as one of the boldest and most controversial acts in the extreme metal genre.

Chris Barnes was the founding lead singer of Cannibal Corpse, who contributed his unique vocal approach and provocative lyrics to establish the band as one of the most radical and controversial groups in the metal world. Barnes was a member of the band from its inception in 1988 until he left in 1995 to form his own band, Six Feet Under. Fans of the genre still recognize Barnes’ impact on Cannibal Corpse’s music and aesthetic, particularly for his role in shaping the band’s early releases.

After leaving Cannibal Corpse in 1995, Barnes went on to achieve additional success with Six Feet Under, which he established alongside former Obituary guitarist Allen West. The band proceeded to unveil a succession of victorious albums, with Barnes’ unique vocals serving as an integral aspect of their recognizable style.

George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher’s partnership with the group Monstrosity ended when he joined the ranks of Cannibal Corpse in 1995, taking over the reins from the band’s former vocalist, Chris Barnes. Since then, he has remained a fixture in the group. Fisher’s unique, guttural vocals have become an unmistakable hallmark of the band’s style, and his lively stage presence and energy have helped cement their status as one of the most riveting and compelling live metal acts on the circuit.

In 1998, the group introduced their sixth studio endeavor, ‘ Gallery of Suicide ,’ which indicated a departure from their former musical approach and instead showcased a more inventive method of songwriting. The album elicited varied responses from both fans and critics, with some lauding the band’s audacity in taking artistic gambles and exploring unexplored territories, while others criticized the album for its absence of coherence and direction.

At The Barrier

Live music, reviews and opinion / est. 2018, cannibal corpse w/ dark funeral, ingested and stormruler – manchester academy: live review.

The legendary death metal outfit, Cannibal Corpse, hit Manchester with a killer bill on the undercard.

It has taken a while, due to obvious health related pandemic reasons, for Cannibal Corpse to hit UK shores in support of 2021’s Violence Unimagined (our review here ). With a European Tour reaching its’ conclusion, an absolutely killer bill was on the menu at Manchester Academy including Stormruler, Ingested, Dark Funeral and the mighty Cannibal Corpse.

With fists and horns raised, Stormruler took to the stage as the scrum for Cannibal Corpse merch was still growing. An early start to fit all bands in means nothing; the crowd grows quickly for the American black metal outfit. ‘Let me hear you scream,’ shouts Jason Asberry as the opening notes blare out. During the bands’ Swift thirty minute set they clearly garner new fans with their brand of black metal. Instrumental and melodious interludes punctuate the furious riffing, solo licks and twin guitar onslaught. ‘Raise your horns!’ Is the cry as the set ends. ‘We’re Stormruler from the USA.’ The near full Manchester Academy responds enthusiastically as they offer thanks and depart. Sacred Rites & Black Magick is the St. Louis natives latest record, and deserves your attention (more info here ).

Like Stormruler and the other bands on the bill, Ingested have been out around Europe for a while. This is Ingested’s homecoming. They are greeted like heroes.

‘Bang your heads!’ howls Jason Evans as the band kick into gear. The group have an insanely powerful technical death metal sound that this crowd truly admire. Multiple circle pit requests for multiple circle pits are made throughout. The masses oblige.

‘Manchester’ chants from the crowd bring wide eyed smiles on stage. ‘It’s so good to be home…in Manchester…or should I say…Slamchester!’ A cacophonous response greets the home town pop before Shadows In Time.

No Half Measures is aptly included in the set – Manchester, and Ingested, give their all for their energetic set. Evans’ shifting vocal extremities are stunning to hear live; he can move between the guttural growls to the snarling shrieks at the drop of a hat. Heartfelt thanks are offered from the stage; the band seem genuinely blown away by the response as they leave the stage in triumphant manner.

America are the next lucky recipients of Ingested. Check out all the upcoming dates for their headlining tour here .

DARK FUNERAL

Dark Funeral have a far more lavish set up. The drapes are more ornate housing the bands’ Nosferatu style imagery. This immediately feels darker. Rolling thunder and a marching drum set the morbid scene before an announcement of God’s absence today.

Clad in demonic outfits befitting of a Scandinavian black metal band and sporting face paint, the band tear into their set with scorching abandon. Stoically standing at the front of the stage like a blasphemous demigod, singer Andreas Vingbäck aka Heljarmadr is an imposing force. His face paint, from afar, looks a little like that sported by Tobias Forge at times.

The guitars cascade around the blistering drums to create a classic black metal sound that is great to hear. The classic black element of the band sets them apart from Stormruler who include a lot more in their sound. Dark Funeral stick to the BM playbook.

With that, many of the tropes associated with the genre are present. ‘Hail Satan’ chants are here, and during When I’m Gone, Heljarmadr parades a human skull around. The song is dedicated to fallen brothers, which gains a pop from the crowd. It is close to ballad territory for the band, but offers a little repose from the frenetic nature of the rest of the set.

With an upturned cross now in the hands of Heljarmadr, the band rip into Nail Him To The Cross. For many in attendance, this demonic and blasphemous tone is what they came for. There are plenty of Dark Funeral fans in the crowd who have clearly come to see them as much as Cannibal Corpse.

Like the other bands on the bill so far, Dark Funeral pay tribute to the bands, the crew and most importantly; the fans. Unchain My Soul sees the crowd respond with fist pumping chants and the band clearly leave their fans very happy and salivating for the arrival of the headliners.

CANNIBAL CORPSE

As Cannibal Corpse’ huge, iconic logo is displayed at the back of the stage, the atmosphere ramps up. ‘Cannibal, Cannibal…’ come the chants from the crowd who are now red hot.

Scourge Of Iron opens the set in true Cannibal Corpse fashion. Corpsegrinder is immediately headbanging; something that he humbly claims to be the best at. I for one, would not argue. As the opener thunders around Manchester Academy, pint pots get thrown around the melee and not for the last time, Erik Rutan shows off his shredding abilities.

Having Erik Rutan in the Cannibal Corpse ranks full time is an inspired move. His style gives a more sinister edge to an already sinister sounding band! Inhumane Harvest is the first cut from Violence Unimagined to be aired and is greeted with more fist pumps from the crowd.

dark funeral cannibal corpse tour

‘Well – I wanna hear how you’re doing tonight?’ bellows Corpsegrinder in his first interaction with the crowd. ‘I hope your ready for more death metal?’ he questions. Somewhat unsurprisingly, the response is massive. Code Of The Slashers sounds monstrous and the shifts in tempo throughout the piece make for an uncompromising proposition. For many, people would dismiss Cannibal Corpse however when viewed objectively, the technicality and musicality on show is unparalleled.

Alex Webster’s bass work on F****d With A Knife is a joy to behold. His playing style is legendary and any conversations about the greatest bassists ever should always include him. Webster’s longevity with the band alongside other ever present member Paul Mazurkiewicz is acknowledged through cuts from the entirety of Cannibal Corpse’s career. A Skull Full Of Maggots makes an appearance from debut, Eaten Back To Life, and Gutted is aired from follow up, Butchered At Birth.

In putting together the set, Cannibal Corpse pay dues to nearly all of their records. Obviously, Violence Unimagined has the biggest quota. Condemnation Contagion has one of the bands catchiest openings, and Necrogenic Resurrection one of the most blistering. For all the ‘classic’ Cannibal Corpse material, or what is considered classic; one sleeper of an album that the band has is 2006’s Kill. From that album, The Time To Kill Is Now lets Rutan again show his blistering guitar skills in its very short run time.

As the band reach the end of their set, Stripped, Raped & Strangled is dedicated to Trevor Strnad; the sadly departed singer of The Black Dahlia Murder, who tragically died in 2022 at the mere age of 41. Hammer Smashed Face ends the set in iconic fashion. Arguably Cannibal Corpse’s most well known song, the blasting intro and solo bass run from Webster is greeted in triumphant manner.

Cannibal Corpse always deliver. They are one of life’s true constants. On this evidence, they show no signs of slowing. Long may they reign as the kings of Death Metal!

dark funeral cannibal corpse tour

After a long run of shows for this tour, the day had come where Nottingham would close off the end of a monumental European tour ruled by Cannibal Corpse, Dark Funeral, our very own UK’s Ingested and American Blackened Death metallers StormRuler.

The floors of Nottingham’s Rock City was absolutely brimful of old and new fans, each have been waiting eagerly for this tour.

I was still in the queue for merch when Stormruler first took to the stage. Though through the corridors of Nottingham’s Rock City, I could already tell I was in for a treat.

Compulsory CC shirt and patch bought, and just having managed to avoid impulse buying 4 guitar picks mounted in a frame for £20, I sprinted back upstairs to find out what was going on.

The atmosphere and the precision with which StormRuler delivered their music was incredible.my god they ripped live, true virtuosity. Furthermore, they looked like they were enjoying themselves on stage, which inherently makes a band more interesting to watch, the passion cannot help but seep through.

The set was made up mostly of tracks taken from newest album ‘Sacred Rites And Black Magick’

The atmosphere created by the depth of bullet speed riffs and heavy drumming interludes during the first track Reign of the Winged Duke was something to behold, straight off the bat we’re launched into a taste of exactly what’s to come from Stormruler.

dark funeral cannibal corpse tour

The mood changes through the set with the melodic echoes of Sacred Rites And Black Magick, though the vocals of Jason Asberry keep consistently full of heavy, fire casting energy.

dark funeral cannibal corpse tour

There are a couple of absolutely stunning minute long instrumentals – Sanguinare Vampiris and Hymns Of The Slumbering Race echoes dark and beautiful moods, the stage grows dark and eerie and we’re catapulted into a void of beautiful and ambient atmospheres ringing through the halls of Rock City.

After a brief interlude in the sardine tin smoking area, it was time for Ingested. It was clear to see Ingested had a little more history behind them in the way in which they interacted with the crowd. Less of the “you’re listening to our music, please enjoy”, more “you’re ours, now mosh!”.

dark funeral cannibal corpse tour

They brought a ferocity and an energy to the stage which made sure anyone who hadn’t lit up to Stormruler would be absolutely enraptured by the end of their set, an incredibly tight slab of modern death metal goodness laid in front of us for our audible delight.

Opener Rebirth is an older favourite of Ingested fans and in it’s live setting, it’s clear why.

dark funeral cannibal corpse tour

The technical, slammin starts straight away with this first track. The velocity of the kit that’s wielded by Lyn Jeffs is phenomenal. Pure blast beats and non stop pace of ferocity that twists and laces in and out of the the maddening riffs of Sean Hynes had the crowd going bananas.

We see newer bassist Tom O’Malley command the backbone of the breakdowns throughout this set… he looks cool, calm and collected yet, he has the ability to completely lead hundreds of metalheads in the venue to neck breaking destruction.

dark funeral cannibal corpse tour

The energy is collected and displays no flaws as we’re launched into 2020’s No Half Measures… aptly named as we are taken into a whirlwind of fast paced blast beats and beautifully melodic winding riffs amongst Jase Evans’ unmistakable FACE MELTING vocals.

The next track is Shadows In Time, taken from newest album Ashes Lie Still and let me tell you,,, displays Ingested’s ability to keep themselves as fresh and as powerful as ever. There are moments in this track that display the undeniable skills in tech death metal – the blast beating in this track coming from Lyn’s footwork is jaw dropping. Heavy doesn’t cut it. The make up of their sound and glue together as the band they are today is right here. Gorgeous melodic yet slam filled, filthy riffs and vocals born to kill make up for one of the heaviest bands of the night.

dark funeral cannibal corpse tour

We’re treated to another older favourite, Invidious which displays a more melo tech side to Ingested’s signature sound before the Manchester lads leave us with another new offering – Echoes Of Hate. This is a stunning end to the set for Ingested. Orange hues of light emulates from the stage and the guitars winding solo rings out to introduce us to a track of speed and a labyrinth of ever twisting blast beats, ending with the night’s very first Wall of Death.

Dark funeral were up next, I’m not the most well versed in black metal, but I didn’t feel the vibe as much as the last two bands.

dark funeral cannibal corpse tour

That being said, opener Nosferatu gave a sense of what to expect. The guitars were the star of the track, with a fast paced riffing and rhythm turning dark and menacing. The wailing vocals of Heljarmadr rang through the stage amongst the carnage of the drums thundering and the riffs hurling towards the crowd.

We were treated to a bit of nostalgia, 2009’s My Funeral shimmered out from the stage and then took us down a path of pure ferocity. This is black metal in all it’s traditional glory. Lord Ahriman and Chaq Moi combine the fast paced and rhythmic strings to create an evil sounding background to allow the vocals echoing screams to pierce through your core.

dark funeral cannibal corpse tour

There were some tracks that very much showcased the Swedish Black Metal textures in Dark Funeral, however, it cannot go unnoticed that once the lights dimmed and the stunning melodic intro rang through, the track that stole the show was newcomer When I’m Gone.

The atmosphere changed completely. No longer ferocious but beautifully melancholic and sorrowful. Stunning melodic riffs and deep toned bass fills the halls of Rock City and encapsulated everyone in that moment.

dark funeral cannibal corpse tour

Last track Where Shadows Forever Reign left us with a pure evil track and portrayed a beautiful and menacing melody halfway through that entwines with the thundering of the kit and twists and moods of powerful anguish.

Finally; Cannibal Corpse. They came out and proved that whenever there is a discussion about who the greatest death metal band of all time is, you would quite simply be wrong to avoid even mentioning this band. Whether they’re your favourite, or your least, they are so incredibly tight to this day, even on gig 38 of a 45 day long tour. These guys brought so much energy to the stage, it could have been the first night.

dark funeral cannibal corpse tour

Remaining interesting to watch move around and interact with the music… the riffs, man, the riffs! I rather unfortunately missed Cannibal Corpse the first time I had a chance to, at bloodstock, this more than makes up for it, they were truly incredible. Not a riff or a beat lost to the venue, and Corpsegrinder continues to bring brutal vocals and corny dad jokes to the heaving masses.

dark funeral cannibal corpse tour

Out of nowhere, we have no time to ease in. Scourge of Iron came first like a battering ram and completely annihilated the crowd from the outset. Body surfers and the pit were in full swing by the time the first verse came to us. Rob and Erik completely slaughtered the crowd at the feet of Corpsegrinder with the filthiest and most chuggiest riffs to boot. With winding bass work underlining the carnage, this hour long set of the last show was going to rip!

dark funeral cannibal corpse tour

There was a lad that had lost his shoe through some point of the show and had some gentle ribbing from Corpsegrinder during the set.

One of the newer tracks within the last couple of years Inhumane Harvest came pummeling through. Paul’s footwork is second to none on that kit. He commands the pace of the track and the energy it harvests from the crowd with hard hi hats and double pedals like he’s running on water. Phenomenal.

dark funeral cannibal corpse tour

The uttermost energy of the night reflected back from the reaction of the crowd to the pummeling anthems of F*cked With a Knife and I Cum Blood .

Corpsegrinder stood like a mountain over the crowd, windmilling ferociously whilst a sea of body surfers silhouetted the front of the barriers.

dark funeral cannibal corpse tour

With non stop energy flourishing through Rock City, we were given a leaving gift of the whole venue moving, jumping and colliding with eachother… one of the biggest pits I’ve seen at Rock City to the electrically charged finale, Hammer Smashed Face .

This last song of the last leg of the tour was full of rampaging energy with the atmosphere blown to bits in a constant tidal wave of devastating blast beats  hammering riffs and bloodcurdling pipes.

Fucking brilliant.

The 7th New Album We Are The Apocalypse Out Now on LP/CD/Digital

The Ineffable Kings of Black Metal est. 1993

dark funeral cannibal corpse tour

1993 was the year it all began, Lord Ahriman and Blackmoon [1993-1996] founded the infernal war machine we now know as Dark Funeral, one of the most intense Black Metal acts ever! In January 1994 the legendary, self-titled and self-financed debut mini album were recorded at Dan Swanös Uni-Sound Studio. It was released upon the un-expecting masses on May 4th the same year. The band quickly established themselves as a band to watch. Since then a lot of things has happened. The line-up has changed, several amazing albums has been released and Dark Funeral has toured no less than 45 different countries with acts as Dimmu Borgir, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Immortal and many more.

The album "Diabolis Interium" was nominated as best metal album at P3 Guld awards and in Oct 2002 the band played Singapore as the first foreign band in ten years (Metallica played there in the early 90s).

Their highly acclaimed live album "De Profundis Clamavi ad te Domine" was released in Europe by Regain Records and licensed to several other countries. On January 20th 2005, Dark Funeral signed a new record deal with Regain Records and in late May the band entered Dug Out Studios together with producer Daniel Bergstrand (Meshuggah, In Flames, Strapping Young Lad, Behemoth a.s.o.) and c/o producer Örjan Örnkloo (Misery Loves CO) to begin the work and recording of their new, long awaited Satanic Symphony. Roughly delayed the band finally completed their recording session on July 15th, 2005. On Aug 8th, the band returned to Dug Out Studios to lay down the final vocal parts and do the final mixing of the album. Finally, on August the 18th, 2005 Dark Funerals new Masterpiece "Attera Totus Sanctus" was completed! It was released on October 24th, 2005. Upon the release the album climbed straight up on the Swedish Metal chart as NR #3.

And the success continues. After touring the world in support of their latest and highly acclaimed “Attera Totus Sanctus” album , they finally released their first ever DVD (2-disc´s)"Attera Orbis Terrarum-part 1 on October 15th". The DVD landed impressively as Nr 5 on the Swedish Music DVD chart. This is the first DVD in a series of two which the band has planned to release from their world touring for Attera Totus Sanctus.

Dark Funeral begin 2008 by announcing a release date for their second DVD set, "Attera Orbis Terrarum - Part 2". The 2-disc DVD was released on October 20 through Regain Records. This is the second in a series of two DVDs featuring outstanding, killer material that was recorded during the band's worldwide touring for "Attera Totus Sanctus.". While Part 1 focuses on European shows, part two focuses on South American shows, where the band has a fanatical following.

Besides playing some festivals over Europe in 2009, the band decide to focus on writing material for a new full-length album. In July the band entered the Abyss Studio together with producer Peter Tägtgren to record their long awaited new full-length album, entitled "Angelus Exuro pro Eternus". After four years of silence, Dark Funeral returned big and with their most powerful, technical and varied album to date. And while still being true to their roots, they have taken a great step forward in the evolution of their brand of fine Swedish black metal. “Angelus Exuro pro Eternus” is, from the very beginning to the end, a hell ride you simply don’t want to miss! Once again the band prove that they still without doubt are Sweden’s biggest black metal export of all times. The amazing cover artwork was once again created by Morbid (Daniel Valeriani). While the band are gathered in the studio they decide to shoot a video for one of their new tracks "My Funeral", which was shot in and outside an old and abandoned Mental hospital. It was produced by Standard Film, Umeå, Sweden. After only three days MySpace decide to remove it, while the success on YouTube was a fact.

Lord Ahriman continues to wave the flag of Swedish Black Metal with the Dark Funeral crusade. Where many would have, and do fail, Ahriman and Dark Funeral continue to prevail.

In 2016, a new aeon has begun with the release of DARK FUNERAL's sixth studio album, “Where Shadows Forever Reign”, produced by Daniel Bergstrand (In Flames, Dimmu Borgir, Behemoth), which not only visually refers back to the aforementioned first offering due to its stunning artwork by Necrolord (Dissection, Emperor), but also marks a debut of sorts: The first DARK FUNERAL album with new vocalist Heljarmadr. His vitriolic snarl finds a perfect match in Lord Ahriman’s trademark riffing, and shines on the intense opening track, which would not have felt out of place on 1998's “Vobiscum Satanas”, as well as on the slower epic, “As I Ascend”, the diverse “To Carve Another Wound”, or the grim finale “Where Shadows Forever Reign”.

The album was awarded twice, by Swedish P3 Guld & German Metal Hammer Award and in October 2018, Lord Ahriman was awarded with SKAP's Metal Award as a songwriter.

Approaching nearly 30 years since the beginning of their journey now, DARK FUNERAL continue to reach for new heights to bring audiences into its otherworldly & unholy visions on the band’s seventh full-length LP, ‘We Are The Apocalypse’. The new record sees the Satanic vanguards deliver their most aggressive and expansive songs to date. Guided by the fortitude and musical ambition of lead guitarist, songwriter & founding member Lord Ahriman, the new album promises a satisfying number of ‘firsts’ for the band, while still pushing to improve upon the aural marriage of sinister atmosphere and technical ferocity that distinguishes Dark Funeral amongst their peers.

Lord Ahriman: The True Emperor amongst the Kings of Swedish Black Metal

Behold! And surrender your feeble soul to the unholy abyss. This is where the blackest of Metal dwells.

When you speak of Black Metal, there is no way you can omit one of the lands of the three crowns — Sweden. Dark Funeral, the ineffable kings of Black Metal, are one of the originators of Swedish Black Metal and this well-suited title was bestowed upon by many of the loyal fans throughout the world. The band was formed in 1993 and there would be no Dark Funeral without the much respected, remaining founding member, Lord Ahriman.

Originally from Luleå, a small town in northern Sweden, Lord Ahriman was raised by a somewhat musical family where he developed an interest in music at a very young age. He founded his songwriting abilities around 1989 and formed his first band Satan’s Disciples (1989-1992) when he was still living in Luleå. He moved to Stockholm in 1991 and two years later, Dark Funeral was born.

On May 4, 1994, the band surprises the world with the unexpected, now considered legendary, self-financed and self-titled EP "Dark Funeral". Followed by this release, the band altered the perception of Black Metal forever with the first full-length album "The Secrets of the Black Arts" in 1996. Praised by many fans and critics alike, the debut album is deemed to be one of the first so-called anthemic Melodic Black Metal albums of all time. The melodies and the guitar work are so unique that people do not believe their ears and think that the sound, vibe and atmosphere are created by keyboards. However, there are no keyboards.

Dark Funeral has now released six full-length albums. During the course of time, the band has also received two highly-regarded awards — P3 Guld: Rock/Metal and Metal Hammer Awards: Metal Anthem — for the sixth full-length album "Where Shadows Forever Reign" in 2016. In 2018, the founding member, Lord Ahriman, also received another highly-regarded award — SKAP: Metal Award — as a composer; SKAP quoted: “he alone sits on the throne of the kingdom of dark metal; he creates raging music with moods and sounds that send shivers down the spine and are loved by fans all over the world”.

Now, 29 years into the career, Dark Funeral's seventh album "We Are The Apocalypse" is scheduled to be released in March 2022. The new album is unwavering in its intention to draw listeners further into a realm of true evil and lament, that is where Dark Funeral are, and have always been, their strongest. The outstanding guitar work by the band's mastermind, Lord Ahriman, captures a truly sinister atmosphere that is further improved on since the debut album and is yet to be still matched by any.

To this day, Dark Funeral’s music is born from Lord Ahriman’s inner darkness and unique shredding techniques.

Dark Funeral achieved nothing less than breathing new life into a genre that seemed to have become somewhat antiquated and musty.

Deaf Forever Magazine (Germany)

Dark Funeral’s deft counterbalancing of battering ultra-violence and impeccably paced restraint is nothing short of electrifying.

As previously reported, CANNIBAL CORPSE will close out 2022 with a North American headlining tour. The month-long journey will commence November 3 in Silver Springs, Maryland and run through December 10 in St. Petersburg, Florida, with support provided by DARK FUNERAL , IMMOLATION and BLACK ANVIL . The trek includes a headlining performance at the first annual Decibel Magazine Metal & Beer Fest: Denver on December 2. Additionally, the band will appear on this year's edition of the Blue Ridge Rock Festival in September.

CANNIBAL CORPSE 's 15th studio album, "Violence Unimagined" , was released in April 2021 via Metal Blade Records . Erik Rutan , one of the death metal's most acclaimed guitarists who is known for his time as part of MORBID ANGEL throughout the '90s and early 2000s, as well as handling vocals/guitars for HATE ETERNAL , lent his guitar as well as production skills to the effort, which was recorded at his Mana Recording in St. Petersburg, Florida. Rutan previously produced four CANNIBAL CORPSE albums (in addition to "Violence Unimagined" ),alongside the likes of GOATWHORE , SOILENT GREEN and BELPHEGOR . Filling in live on guitar since 2019, in 2020 he became a full member, contributing to the writing process.

In a 2021 interview with Shawn Ratches of Laughingmonkeymusic , CANNIBAL CORPSE drummer and founding member Paul Mazurkiewicz was asked how long he thinks the band can keep going. He responded: "As long as we're all healthy, then who knows how long we can take it. I wouldn't have ever thought when I started that I'd still be doing this still at 53 years old. So, how long can we take? You've just gotta look at it, at this point, day by day. You never know. If you stay healthy and you keep active and you keep doing it, it's just gonna come down to that — it's gonna come down to the health factor. Because everybody knows — the older you get, anything can go wrong at any given time, whether it's a disease or an injury or whatever that you just go, 'I can't do it anymore. No matter how much I practice and how much I do the right thing, it doesn't matter.' So we've gotta just take it day by day at this point. There's no denying — we're more at the end of our career than we are in the beginning. Can we go another 30 years? Well, I highly doubt it. I would be 83 doing this… That would be incredible [if we could still do it at that age], but I would have to almost think that would slightly be impossible. I guess it's possible — who knows? We don't know. Nobody's done it in that sense in the extreme form.

"When you had [late THE ROLLING STONES drummer] Charlie Watts still doing it at 80 years old, that's amazing," he continued. "So the fact that [he was] still drumming and [he was] on stage at 80 is incredible. I just met Carmine Appice the other day, and he's 75. And the guy is still up there and playing and doing his thing — albeit it's not maybe extreme death metal, but still, he's up there playing drums…

"So, you never know. You take it day by day," he repeated. "As long as we're healthy and we're feeling good and everything is going good in those ways, then who's to say we can't last another 20 years. But who knows?"

In a 2017 interview with Aesthetic Magazine , Mazurkiewicz stated about CANNIBAL CORPSE 's longevity: "It's about the love of the music. We're very fortunate to start out 30 years ago and have success right off the bat where everything was going great. We all just love to play and write songs, and after fourteen records, we just want to keep moving forward and we feel like we always have, and the popularity just grows with the band. We love to create and write the perfect brutal death metal CANNIBAL CORPSE song and I think we obviously must have achieved that to have this sort of longevity."

“I shouldn’t speculate why we were singled out, other than because we were massively offensive”: how Cannibal Corpse became death metal’s first million selling band

Blood, guts and Jim Carrey – the epic story of death metal provocateurs Cannibal Corpse

Cannibal Corpse

Cannibal Corpse are the most successful death metal band ever. Since forming in Buffalo, New York in the late 1980s, they’ve sold more than a million albums, generated plenty of mainstream controversy and even impressed Jim Carrey enough to appear in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective . In 2012, as the band prepared to release their 12th album Torture, guitarist Alex Webster sat down with Metal Hammer to look back at a career drenched in blood, guts and provocation.

As time marches on, it becomes harder and harder to recall a time when our heavy music still had the ability to startle, shock and disturb. Back in the 80s, when most of what we regard as extreme metal was merely a wicked glint in the eye of guitar-wielding demons yet to be spawned, the lines between now well-established subgenres like thrash, black metal and death metal were not so much blurred as non-existent.

The true horror of metal at its darkest and most intense was only just beginning to reveal itself, and for those who allied themselves to the genre’s nascent dark side, the incremental discovery of what was possible and how far into the depths of the sonic abyss our favourite musicians could take us was an astonishing and compelling rollercoaster ride with no clear destination to anticipate. Back then, we embraced the unknown and revelled in our music’s pointed and purposeful otherness, as those who rejected heavy music recoiled in ignorant fear. We looked to the daring and the dastardly to refine and define what it meant to be brutal. And that’s where the mighty Cannibal Corpse came in...

“When we got going, there were only a few other bands that you’d really call death metal,” recalls founder member and bassist Alex Webster. “Possessed, Death and Morbid Angel were around and there were thrash bands that we liked that were borderline death metal with that darker riffing sound, like Dark Angel and early Kreator and Sodom stuff. We loved early black metal like Venom and Bathory too. It was kinda like a tree. It all starts from the same root and the branches move out and get farther and farther away from each other. We were far from being the first, but it was always death metal and it was always gore.”

Today, Cannibal Corpse are now firmly established as both the biggest DM band of all time and the ultimate expression of extreme music as a natural bedfellow of horror cinema and literature. Renowned for their depraved and disturbing lyrics and foul, censor-baiting artwork, the band have never strayed from a proudly subversive and ugly creative path, becoming a benchmark for brutal metal and gore-splattered mischief via a stream of consistently impressive studio albums.

Back in the late 80s, however, DM was still in its infancy and it took a brave label to invest time and money into a band that had such a fervently unpalatable agenda. Thankfully, original Cannibal Corpse frontman Chris Barnes had made a helpful contact or two while working in a local record shop and it was through his connections that his band found them- selves in negotiations with the legendary Brian Slagel and his long-admired Metal Blade imprint. Signed in 1989, Cannibal Corpse have remained with the label ever since; an extraordinary and unique relationship in a frequently uncertain and turbulent industry.

“That connection between Chris’s old boss and Mike Faley at Metal Blade was how we got our foot in the door,” recalls Alex. “That helped them notice us and once they noticed us they liked what they heard. When Brian [Slagel] saw the songtitles he was like, ‘Oh well, we should just sign this band! Those are crazy songtitles!’ We’ve always had a great personal connection with all the people at the label. They won’t hire somebody unless they’re into metal. They take pride in what they do and genuinely love metal. They’ve treated us well; we never saw a reason to leave. We’ve got to be one of the only bands that’s put out 12 records on the same label!”

Cannibal Corpse released their debut, the heavily thrash-tinged Eaten Back To Life , in August 1990. Recorded at Morrisound Studio in Tampa, Florida, it offered a blistering and frenzied amalgam of the band’s influences married to lyrics and imagery that eschewed thoughts of Satan in favour of a horror-inspired approach. Songs like Shredded Humans , The Undead Will Feast and A Skull Full Of Maggots were custom-built to appeal to the huge subset of the metal community that loved Stephen King and Jack Ketchum, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Evil Dead , Lovecraft and Poe.

As primitive and even juvenile as they may first have appeared, Cannibal Corpse – who initially featured Chris and Alex alongside drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz and guitarists Bob Rusay and Jack Owen – were tapping into something far deeper and longer-lasting. The kings of gore were installed on their throne; leading lights in a DM scene that was growing fast. By the time they hit the road in support of 1991’s Butchered At Birth album, Cannibal Corpse were unstoppable.

“On Eaten Back To Life we didn’t really tour,” explains Alex, “but we did a few shows around the Buffalo area and went to NYC, Montreal, Toronto, Pittsburgh etc, but then we went over to Europe in ’91 for Butchered At Birth and saw this great reaction from all these people on the other side of the ocean. We were like, ‘Wow, all these people know who we are!’ We were getting two or three hundred people a night at these shows, which was really great for a band with only two albums out. It was a great surprise.”

Something that may not have come as quite such a huge surprise to these young miscreants as they took their murderous din across the Atlantic was that a lot of people were extremely offended by the Butchered At Birth artwork, which depicted zombies dismembering a pregnant woman. Created by Vincent Locke – the man behind most of Cannibal Corpse’s gleefully disgusting album covers – it was always destined to ruffle feathers, but when the album reached the eyes of censorious types in Germany, all hell broke loose and the band suddenly found themselves embroiled in an intense furore that eventually led to their albums being banned and, somewhat bizarrely, an intermittent legal restriction on the live performance of certain songs.

“Vince’s art was a big part of the controversy!” Alex laughs. “Especially on Butchered At Birth . We had the graphic lyrics and the cover was graphic too, so it was difficult for censors to ignore. That’s when it began in Germany. They were very sensitive to that kind of thing. I mean, honestly, it’s understandable. Look at the cover for Butchered At Birth ! I get it. I understand why people find it offensive! But that was the beginning of censorship problems that we’ve had our whole career. Butchered... was censored all over the place; as far as I know we still can’t sell that cover in Germany. That cover was in everyone’s face and so when then they read the lyrics and dug a little deeper it became a case of ‘Oh my god, we’ve got stop these guys!’”

Undeterred by the horrified response they received in certain territories, Cannibal Corpse – and chief lyricist Chris Barnes in particular – made every effort to consolidate their reputation as the world’s most extreme and controversial metal band on their third album, Tomb Of The Mutilated . Again adorned with some sincerely unpleasant cover art – this time featuring a particularly gruesome act of cunnilingus – it was an album bulging with moments of stomach-churning horror, ranging from the cross-your-legs revulsion of I Cum Blood through to the provocatively over- the-top Entrails Ripped From A Virgin’s Cunt .

“Chris was in charge of the lyrics and he ran the band business at that time as well, so he knew what he was doing!” laughs Alex. “We placed no limits on him and he came up with the lyrics on his own. He’d come to us with the most vile, repugnant stuff and we’d be like, ‘Sure! Why not?’ We were trying to make the most extreme and aggressive music we could, so why not have the most antagonistic lyrics too?”

Somewhat ironically, it was Tomb Of The Mutilated that would push Cannibal Corpse ever nearer to the mainstream. Much to everyone’s surprise, the band were summoned to take part in comic actor Jim Carrey’s break- through big-screen vehicle Ace Ventura: Pet Detective . The band performed their show-stopping classic Hammer Smashed Face as Jim gurned and blundered his way through a crowd of windmilling metalheads. As a result they gained the sort of mainstream exposure that no one from the metal underground had ever even dreamed about before, let alone achieved.

“We filmed that during part of the Tomb Of The Mutilated tour,” Alex recalls. “They flew us out to Miami to film the scene and then we went back on tour and kinda forgot about it. This was before the internet and you just didn’t get updated on things the way you do now, so we were completely out of touch with them but later we all went to see the movie. It was cool! We didn’t even know if they’d kept us in there. It happened to come out a couple of months before we released [the next Cannibal Corpse album] The Bleeding and it turned out to be a hit movie, so that had to help us. On top of that, for The Bleeding , we finally got a music video for Staring Through The Eyes Of The Dead , and that had to help too because they played it on MTV a couple of times. We were on Beavis And Butt-head , being ridiculed of course, but at least it was on there! There was a lot of publicity – we’d never been so exposed. The Bleeding is still our best selling record.”

Emboldened by the success of their fourth album, not to mention an improvement in musicianship as new rhythm guitarist Rob Barrett (who replaced Bob Rusay) brought a tightness and precision to the Cannibal Corpse sound that had been conspicuous by its absence on their earlier albums, Alex and his comrades were enjoying a moment in the spotlight that few would’ve predicted given the extremity of their music.

Buoyed by their achievements, they relocated from Buffalo to the sunny climes and sandy beaches of Tampa, Florida. However, the controversy that had long dogged the band was showing no signs of dissipating and within a year of The Bleeding ’s release, right-wing US senator Bob Dole was targeting the band and proclaiming them to be a threat to the moral values of a generation of young Americans. Trenchant bollocks of the worst kind, of course, but Bob Dole’s interest in censoring Cannibal Corpse and their music was a little unexpected, not least because it was so hard to imagine that any mainstream politician would be aware of death metal’s existence in the first place.

“I probably shouldn’t speculate why he singled us out, other than because we were massively offensive!” smiles Alex. “I just don’t see Bob Dole doing the research on his own, quite frankly! I suspect the Christian fundamentalist lobbyist types were responsible for all that. But if anything it just helped us! Anything that someone like that tells you not to listen to, you’re gonna want to check out, right?”

Firmly at the top of the DM heap, Cannibal Corpse were in such a strong position in the mid 90s they were even able to weather the departure of talismanic frontman Chris Barnes. While recording their fifth album, Vile, the band felt that Chris’s distinctive but limited vocal style and stubborn refusal to evolve in tandem with the music prompted them to eject him from the lineup; a brave move, particularly considering how popular the singer was with the band’s fanbase. Fortunately, as Alex explains, the perfect replacement was already waiting in the wings. Enter George ‘Corpsegrinder’ Fisher ...

“George was part of the Tampa scene although he was living between Baltimore, where his family was, and Tampa with [DM veterans] Monstrosity,” says the bassist. “It was around October ’95 and we were recording with Chris and it wasn’t working out. Chris went away for a few weeks to tour with Six Feet Under and we decided to kick him out and get George. So I called him up and he came down and he was the man! He was exactly what we wanted. If you listen to bands like Kreator and Dark Angel, they have that really rapid-fire vocal delivery and George was able to do that in a DM way. We wanted the Tom Araya of DM and we found him!”

A few petulant complaints from disillusioned Chris Barnes fans aside, Corpsegrinder was swiftly accepted by the Cannibal Corpse faithful, not least because Vile was such a potent and unrelenting record that brilliantly showcased his talents. In 1997, another lineup change added yet more fuel to the band’s fire as Rob Barrett left and was replaced by ex-Nevermore wunderkind Pat O’Brien.

“Pat had a massive impact, “ says Alex. “He has that shredding firepower that we’d never had before. You have to be pretty special to play next to Jeff Loomis!”

Despite their rude collective health, however, there is no denying that Cannibal Corpse were about to enter a more sobering era, wherein more easily marketed black metal bands dominated column inches and traditional DM bands struggled to be heard. From 1998’s Gallery Of Suicide album onwards, Cannibal Corpse simply put their noses to the grindstone and took care of business.

“Yeah, from Gallery... to The Wretched Spawn in 2004 we were still doing quite well but it was a different time,” Alex concedes. “Our tours were successful and we were still able to make a living, but Bloodthirst [released in 1999], for instance, which I think is one of our best records, is also our lowest-selling album! Overall, DM was not a high point publicity and popularity-wise. But we stayed consistent. Every one of the records represents our best effort at that time and I’m proud of them all.”

Despite being the first DM band to sell over a million albums worldwide, Cannibal Corpse have rarely been acknowledged for their immense influence on the extreme metal scene in general, but recent years have been kinder to their reputation as a new generation of bands have discovered and redefined the joys of playing insanely brutal metal. Any aspiring young metal musician who embraces notions of speed, aggression and mindbending technicality must owe a debt of gratitude to Cannibal Corpse and their legacy. The band themselves also seem to have been revitalised by recent developments in the extreme metal realm, as the creative highs of 2006’s Kill and 2009’s Evisceration Plague – both bolstered by the returning Rob Barrett, who replaced Jack Owen in 2005 – have noisily and compellingly demonstrated.

“We were very aware of how things changed back in our favour again and very happy that we were still around to enjoy some of the benefits!” says Alex. “In 2006 we did a tour called Sounds Of The Underground, with Job For A Cowboy and Black Dahlia Murder, and seeing all these younger fans being interested in this kind of stuff, and now bands like Whitechapel and Suicide Silence too, that’s great. Some of that stuff is not exactly DM, but it’s definitely closely related and if a guy in JFAC wears a Morbid Angel shirt, the fans are gonna investigate who Morbid Angel is. That’s so cool. Our crowds’ ages stretch from 15 to 50 and maybe even a little beyond that. It makes me happy for my band but also for DM in general. We’re here to stay!”

As they prepare to unleash their 12th album, Torture , Cannibal Corpse are both revered veterans and a highly credible, vibrant musical force. Not many bands survive for as long as these guys have, but not only have they weathered over two decades of gruelling active service, but their passion for making music that plumbs the depths of depravity while crushing every skull within blood-spurting distance shows no signs of diminishing. DM is about good times, great music and gallons of gore shared with like- minded friends. And right now, just as it ever was, no one does it better than Cannibal Corpse.

“You can listen to whatever you want, have a broad musical taste, but you should never feel that you need to grow out of listening to or playing death metal,” grins Alex. “I feel like some people are like ‘Oh, I’m in my 30s now so maybe I should start listening to serious music now...’ Goddamn it, death metal is serious music and you can listen to it until you’re 80 years old! And I will. I know I’m gonna love this music my whole life and I know there’s a lot of people who feel the same way. We like all different kinds of metal, but death metal is still our favourite. I don’t see that changing!”
