The startlist for the 2022 Tour de France Femmes is slowly solidifying, one team at a time. We’re expecting quite a few late finalisations this year as teams wait until the last possible moment due to potential COVID-forced changes .

Thus far, we’ve made a few educated guesses based on previous long-list announcements and our own analysis. As teams confirm their six-rider rosters this week, we’ll update those lists and drop a little ✅ next to the team name.

AG Insurance-NXTG reveals team for Tour de France Femmes

AG Insurance-NXTG has announced its lineup for the upcoming Tour de France Femmes. The tour is scheduled to start from July 24 and end on July 31.

The team has chosen a mix of climbers and sprinters to balance different stages. Julia Borgström will be leading the team. Wollaston, who has already won the GP Morbihan, will be responsible for the breakaway in the early stages.

Marianne Vos withdraws from Giro d’Italia Donne for Tour de France femmes preparation

Anya Louw, Ilsej Pluimers, Gaia Masetti, and Lone Meertens will be responsible for providing the support. Maud Rijnbeek has been selected as a reserve.

The team is new and lacks experience in big races so this tour will be a crucial milestone in the development and growth of team .“Most of our riders have never participated in a stage race over eight days at this level of difficulty and competition, so this will be an important milestone in their development. However, part of sportsmanship is having ambitions and daring to pursue them,” said Sports Director Jolien D’Hoore.

AG Insurance-Soudal-Quickstep leader Moolman-Pasio 'not far below' Vollering, Van Vleuten

Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio with teammates at the Vuelta a Burgos

The AG Insurance-Soudal-Quick Step team has a prime contender for the upcoming Tour de France Femmes in Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio and part-owner Patrick Lefevere has high hopes for the Continental women's team.

Lefevere infamously said in 2021 that he wouldn't get involved in women's cycling because he wasn't a charity. Then, three months later he decided to back the NXTG team for 2022. The team added AG Insurance that year, then came under the Soudal-Quickstep banner this season.

At the team's Tour de France Femmes presentation in Berlare, Lefevere clarified those comments.

"Once I said: we are not the OMCW. With that, I mainly pointed to the fact that those girls only got paid a few hundred euros a month. That was not acceptable," Lefevere explained, according to Sporza .

Tour de France Femmes favourites Tour de France Femmes route Tour de France Femmes preview

"That's why now they all have a decent minimum wage. Our operating budget is around 2 million euros."

He added that he underestimated the complexities of running a women's programme.

"It's completely different from the men's peloton," Lefevere said. "There is really a lot involved, I underestimated it a bit. We certainly didn't want any complaints in terms of material: that's why the team has the same cars, clothing, bikes and capabilities as with the men."

AG Insurance-Soudal-Quickstep has made great strides this season, and along with bringing in Moolman-Pasio, they've gotten strong performances out of riders like Belgian Justine Ghekiere and Kiwi Ally Wollaston.

Patrick Lefevere is satisfied with the team's progress. "We are definitely not doing badly. It's a different approach from the men's team, where we win tremendously. Meanwhile, our women's team has grown from an amateur organization to the top.

The team heads to the Tour de France Femmes with Moolman-Pasio as the leader, supported by Ghekiere, veterans Romy Kasper, Lotta Henttala, young riders Julia Borgström, Spanish time trial champion Mireia Benito and Maaike Boogaard.

"Our team is promising: we can compete on any terrain," Lefevere said. "Last year there were a lot of crashes, hopefully, the girls will be spared from that this year."

Moolman-Pasio raced the Tour de France for SD Worx last year but pulled out before the final stage after falling ill. Lefevere sees her as a real challenger to her former teammate Demi Vollering and defending Tour champion Annemiek van Vleuten .

"Her level is not far below that of Van Vleuten and Vollering," Lefevere said.

"You need some luck, but you have to force that. You can't focus on those two top riders."

To compete with SD Worx, however, AG Insurance-Soudal-Quickstep will need to reinforce the roster but have already agreed on a contract extension with Moolman-Pasio.

"Ashleigh is important for us. She feels very good in the team and feels her presence is important for us. She has also extended her contract," he said.

"We have to try to stay within budget. I'm co-owner here, so then I have to pay for things out of my own pocket, and at my age, I don't like that very much. We have a scouting program and two youth teams, so there are some possibilities."

Gaia Masetti gives AG Insurance-Soudal Quickstep a win in La Classique Morbihan

Gaia Masetti gives AG Insurance-Soudal Quickstep a win in La Classique Morbihan

Gaia Masetti (AG Insurance-Soudal Quick-Step) secured a solo victory at the 1.1 La Classique Morbihan on Friday.

The Italian finished nine seconds ahead of runner-up Alessia Vigilia (Top Girls Fassa Bortolo) and 11 seconds ahead of Sofia Bertizzolo (UAE Team ADQ). Cristina Tonetti (Top Girls Fassa Bortolo) surge across the line another 2 seconds later to outdistance  Lily Williams (Human Powered Health) for fourth place.

It was the first pro victory for Masetti, who used a leadout by teammate Romy Kasper for the sprint win.

The 114km route offered the field one large look followed by four shorter circuits in Josselin. The initial attack was made by Josie Talbot (Cofidis Women) in the early kilometres, followed by the duo of Jessica Finney (AWOL O’Shea) and Loreleï Vachey (Lanester Women Morbihan) taking their chances at the front before it was all together again.

After a few more attacks, Uno-X’s Marte Berg Edseth stole away at the front until 3km to go. In the final few corners there was a crash in the lead bunch, but Masetti was safe to sprint for the win.

Gaia Masetti third in Dwars door de Westhoek

Gaia Masetti got her first ever podium in a UCI  race today in Dwars door de Westhoek. The 20-year old Italian sprinted to a third place behind her compatriot Chiara Consonni and Sofie van Rooijen.

This year’s edition of Dwars door de Westhoek was a very wet one for Gaia, Eline van Rooijen, Maureen Arens, Amber Aernouts, Mylène de Zoete, Britt Knaven and Lone Meertens .

“The race was really hectic with a lot of crashes and nervousness. As a team we rode well at the narrow points and we made sure we were at the front then. We also tried to go for breakaways but we knew the race was normally going to be decided in a sprint. My work today was to be at the front, stay safe and be ready for the sprint. Jolien told me to be among the first five riders in the last corner. It would mean I would be on the podium, she said. And this is exactly what happened! I am so happy with my very first UCI podium. I really needed this mentally as well. Now I feel more motivated than ever before to go racing and to show what my AG Insurance-NXTG teammates and I are able to!”
