All about Torre Glories (Agbar Tower) in Barcelona

Plan like a pro the interior visit of this amazing building.

Besides Sagrada Familia, if there’s a building that really stands out in the Barcelona skyline that is the Torre Glories (also known as Torre AGBAR). A high sky scrapper with a rounded top that reminds people of a bullet, a cucumber or… things I can’t mention in a post for all public ages. It is located in the Plaça de les Glories Catalanes (hence its current name), which Ildefons Cerda planned to be the center of Barcelona when the Eixample development plan was presented, and now is a complex crossroad that the Barcelona council has been trying to pacify for ages.

La Torre AGBAR by Jean Nouvel

It was originally commissioned to the French architect Jean Nouvel by the Aigues de Barcelona holding to be their iconic headquarters. The acronym of the holding is AGBAR, so the tower was originally called "AGBAR Tower". The construction took between 1999-2004. The water company of Barcelona occupied the building for just over a decade, until it was sold in 2017 to the real state company Merlin States, that continued to rent the space for office use. In 2022 the top of the tower was opened for visits as a vantage point.

The Torre Agbar building

Despite the many nicknames that people has given to Torre Glories due to its “inspiring” shape, its creator Jean Nouvel states it’s supposed to look like a geyser, as a tribute to its original owners, the water company. He’s also acknowledge the influence of the shapes of the Sagrada Familia towers as well as the mountain of Montserrat . Its circular floor plan was choosen to avoid having a main façade, facing instead all the neighborhoods around it.

The exterior of the building is a double façade: an outside a shell of glass blinds, and only separate from it by a maintenance passarelle, the colored aluminium wall with more than 4.500 openings. The glass blinds incorporate sensors that detect temperature, light levels, wind and other weather variables. A special software regulates their degree of inclination to maximize the comfort inside the building, as well as to make a more efficient use of energy.

  • It is obvious, but avoid if you suffer fear of heights.
  • Check the restrictions for the Clouds Cities Barcelona installation : it is not for kids under 12yo, pregnant ladies and people of a variety of physical conditions. The rest of the visit is entirely accessible.
  • No need to arrive earlier than 10 minutes before your entrance time: they won’t let you in anyway.
  • Keep your ticket until you leave the building: you’ll be asked to re-scan it on your way out.
  • Avoid visiting during the last of their opening hours: they typically start telling people to leave around 30 minutes before closing. You don’t want to feel rushed or constantly annoyed by the staff and the PA messages.

While the building is still mostly used for office purposes, in 2022 a vantage point has been opened to the public. The access for visitors isn’t through the main door, though, but via a glass cube located in one side of the tower. Your visit will take you first to the basement, where you’ll walk through the space called “ Hyperview Barcelona “: a combination of 4 art installations that use video, photography, big data and museum-like displays to introduce you to the many sides of Barcelona.

Next you’ll proceed to take the elevator to the 30th floor – the Observation Deck . It’s the highest 360º view you’ll get over Barcelona, at 125m/410ft of height. Sure, La Pedrera, the deck of the Las Arenas mall and the rooftop of the Barcelo Raval hotel also offer 360º views, but they are definitely not as tall – click here for more places to see the city views.

The dome of the observation deck is decorated with a walk-in sculpture by Tomas Saraceno: “ Cloud Cities Barcelona “. If you’ve paid the combo ticket, you’ll be able to enter it and follow a fascinating one-way itinerary through a honeycomb of ropes and plexiglas platforms that evoke how our actions affect the entire community.

The AGBAR Tower lits up every night, 7PM to 11PM in the winter and 9PM to 11PM in the Summer. It displays a combination of red, orange and blue colors that evoke a geyser, but the colors don’t move: they stay still. The tower can be seen from many points in the city, but if you decide to see it from closer, make sure to approach it from the side of the Disseny Hub Museum.

In the plaza between this museum and the Encants flea market you’ll find the installation “ BruumRuum “: LEDs inserted in the pavement that illuminate depending to the ambiance noise detected by sound sensors. It’s the perfect complement to the AGBAR tower lights!

Besides this, the Torre Glories offers special light shows on particular dates, local festivities, the Llum BCN festival in Februrary, or even New Year’s Eve.

More Torre Agbar facts

  • The Torre AGBAR is often compared to Norman Foster’s 30, St. Mary Axe in London, also known as “The Gherkin”. Both buildings were built quite simultaneously: the London one between 2001-2003, and the Barcelona one between 199-2004. The London building is higher, featuring 180 metres (591 ft) of height, whereas the Barcelona one is 144.44 m (473.88 ft) because the city council woulnt’ allow it to go higher, despite Jean Nouvel original plans.
  • Twice (2006 and 2007) the building has been climbed by a peace activist called Alain Robert to gather attention about the situation of Lebanon.
  • The Aigües de Barcelona company trademarked the name “Torre AGBAR” as an alcoholic drink brand, but it’s not been used as such (it might just be they wanted to prevent other companies from using it).

Torre Glories - Old Torre Agbar

Located on Avinguda Diagonal and Carrer Badajoz, the Torre Glòries (formerly Torre Agbar) is one of the most important and iconic skyscrapers in Barcelona .

Torre Glories is one of the tallest and most emblematic skyscrapers of Barcelona . This flamboyant building is situated in the new technological district of the city, and has become an important element in the city’s urban landscape , especially when it's lit up at night. It is located on Avda Diagonal with Calle Badajoz.

Discovering the tower

The curious tower, inaugurated in 2005, has 34 floors and stands 474 Ft (145 m) tall . It's one of the tallest structures in Barcelona.

The construction, which is shaped like a bullet , used 25,000 m³ of concrete and 125 tonnes of steel . The Torre Glories measures 538,195 square feet (50,000 square meters) and most of its floors house business offices.

The tower is especially famous for its light architecture. The building has over 4,500 lights that illuminate the whole structure with attractive lighting as soon as the sun sets.

Although the construction of the “Torre” was very controversial when it was first built, it has become one of the cultural and tourist icons in Barcelona and the tours of the city normally include a visit to the striking building.

Better at night

The Torre Glories is a noteworthy part of Barcelona’s skyline which can be seen from various parts of the city. In our opinion, the best time to visit the skyscraper is when the night falls, when the glass and steel dome is beautifully lit up.

Torre Agbar, the launchpad for Barcelona’s technological advancement and sustainability

Information

On Avinguda Diagonal 211, and close to the Plaça de les Glòries, stands a skyscraper, 145 metres and 34 storeys high, that has become a symbol for the new Barcelona . Opened in 2005, Torre Agbar (or to give it its official name, Torre Glòries ) designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel, ruffled a few feathers in the beginning thanks to its unique appearance: it is shaped like a bullet or a cucumber—but with the passage of time, it has established itself as part of the Barcelona skyline. Perhaps because, with its curved lines and oval shape , it aspires to enter into a silent dialogue with Gaudí’s Sagrada Familia and the mountain of Montserrat —while at the same time representing the idea of a new, modern, technologically pioneering and sustainable Barcelona. Its location places Torre Agbar [Agbar Tower] at the gateway to the 22@ technological district , which has transformed 200 hectares of the former industrial area of Poblenou into Barcelona’s version of Silicon Valley.

A ‘green’ building that is illuminated at night

Torre Agbar is considered as an example of bioclimatic architecture , and in 2011 it was awarded Green Building status by the European Commission, thanks to its energy efficiency and its low level of CO 2 emissions. One of the keys to its low level of energy consumption is the use of lightweight materials that take advantage of Barcelona’s Mediterranean climate. The tower is clad in 60,000 aluminium and glass slats which incorporate photovoltaic plates ; these store enough solar energy to make the whole building self-sufficient. In addition, both the heating and the interior lighting are regulated by a smart computerised system that prevents unoccupied areas of the building receiving heat and light.

During the daytime, the play of different colours, the refractions and degrees of transparency of the aluminium slats as they reflect the sun’s rays create beautiful chromatic scales that change according to the time of day, or even the season of the year. At night, 4,500 LED devices illuminate the tower with beautiful colour shifts of up to 16 million shades, graduating from warm shades at the base to cold tones higher up.

Spectacular from the outside, jinxed on the inside

In spite of its dazzling appearance, Torre Agbar has been less successful in terms of its functionality. It opened in 2005 as the corporate head office of Grupo Agbar, and offered office space for rent, but high costs and the impractical facilities eventually drove out all the companies, including Agbar itself. The situation was not helped, either, by cases of lipoatrophia semicircularis (otherwise known as Sick Building Syndrome) being diagnosed among workers. Over the following years, projects emerged in an effort to find a new use for the building (including a luxury hotel , and a potential head office for the European Medicines Agency) … but they all came to nothing. Eventually, in 2018, Torre Agbar regained its fame and prestige when the Competence Call Center company moved in, subcontracted by Facebook to run its control centre to combat ‘fake news’ .

An interesting fact: Torre Agbar has twice been in the news when it was scaled without a safety harness by Alain Robert, known as the French Spiderman . The first time he performed this daring feat was in the spring of 2006, when he declared it was “an act in favour of peace in Lebanon”. During the course of his career, this expert has scaled other iconic buildings including the Golden Gate of San Francisco, Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the Eiffel Tower and the Sydney Opera House.

Torre Glòries

The Glòries Tower , and its lookout , is one of the symbols of contemporary Barcelona , an enormous bullet-shaped cylinder emerging from the ground and pointing skywards, with a glass surface in which the colours of the Mediterranean are reflected.

Barcelona's new iconic landmark is the result of a collaboration between the Atelier Jean Nouvel and the Barcelona-based b720 studio , and was built between 1999 and 2005. . Like a geyser bubbling up from the depths of the earth, the Glòries Tower, has an eye-catching outline. It stands 144 metres tall and provides an imposing observation deck over the new Barcelona . The French architect, Jean Nouvel – who won the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2008 in recognition of his excellence –, took into account the building's location when he designed it, and this is why its shape is reminiscent of the mountain of Montserrat or the Gaudiesque forms of the Sagrada Família . He also harnessed solar power and groundwater to reduce energy consumption.

The tower has an oval, almost circular base and the interior is spacious and open-plan without pillars. The outer curtain wall is clad in different-coloured glass louvers which can be tilted at different angles. The colour scheme changes from the warmer reddish tones at the base to cooler blues and whites at the top. At night, when the tower is lit up and saturated with colour, it is a beautiful sight.

The building has a lighting system designed by Yann Kersalé, with more than 4,500 LED lamps that have made it one of the city’s most distinctive landmarks. Some of the 60,000 membranes that cover the façade contain photovoltaic cells enabling the building to store its own energy.

The LED lighting system makes it possible to create an infinite number of colour combinations and shapes across the entire façade. They have made the Glòries Tower the focus of many a celebration.

The Glòries tower, formerly Agbar, participates in the Llum BCN , the Festival of Light Arts that takes place during the month of February in the city of Barcelona

The tallest building in the city today was built as "Torre Agbar". The word "Agbar" is made up of the Castilian Ag uas de Bar celona or Aigües de Barcelona in Catalan. Aguas de Barcelona is the municipal water company which today belongs to the Grupo Agbar. The holding consists of a total of 220 companies serving several sectors of the urban infrastructure.

The Torre Glòries was built by the Grupo Agbar and houses its headquarters. Since water is the focus of the Augas de Barcelona, the tower represents a water fountain that constantly changes its appearance. Depending on the incidence of light, the tower changes its colours - the coloured aluminium sheeting that reflects the light consists of 40 different colours of high gloss. In front of this layer the wall is clad with thousands of glass louvres that serve as a sunscreen and can be inclined at various angles to guarantee a maximum reflection of solar energy. The space between the façade layers allows a natural circulation of air in the building.

The Torre Agbar was designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel in association with the company b720 Arquitectos from Barcelona. It is said that Nouvel was inspired by the organic forms of Gaudí’s buildings in Barcelona and by the hills of the Montserrat. The building is often compared to a geyser reaching the sky above Barcelona.

At this moment, the Torre Agbar is the highest building in Barcelona. Only the Sagrada Familia will surmount it once the construction works are over - the building regulations in Barcelona do not allow any other building to be taller than the Sagrada Familia.

Viewing platform of the Torre Glòries

You can visit the viewing platform of the office building. From up there you will experience a unique view of Barcelona, the sea and the Conserolla massif. You can book tickets here.

Nocturnal illumination of the Torre Glòries

The illuminated tower is particularly impressive at night. During the lighting, the 4,500 illuminated panels constantly change their colors. This spectacle is interesting from any point from which you can see the skyscraper if you are not too close to it.

Schedule of illumination:

  • Winter: Fri, Sat & Sun.: 20.00-23.00
  • Summer: Fri, Sat & Sun: 21.00-24.00
  • Also at other times the Torre Agbar will be illuminated.

Use of the Torre Glòries today

In 2013, General Aguas de Barcelona sold the building to investor Emin Capital, who wanted to operate a Grand Hyatt hotel in it. Several restaurants should be built in the building and the viewing platform should be made accessible to the public. However, the city administration did not give a building permit for a new hotel. The building was then sold on to investor Merlin Properties in January 2017 for "only" €142 million. The sale price is €108 million below the price that Emin Capital had paid for it at the time. The former Torre Agbar seems to have become a slow seller as Torre Glòries. The city of Barcelona has applied to host the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Due to the political uncertainties in October 2017, Barcelona did not get the contract for the authority. Parts of the building are now rented out as offices, Merlin will probably convert and modernize it and expand the Torre Agbar into a large office building.

Technical data of the Torre Glòries

  • Height: 142 m
  • Gross floor area: 50,500 m²
  • Floors: 32 of which 28 can be used as office spaces
  • Expanse of the façade: 16,000 m²
  • Surface: 40 special colours of high gloss
  • Window cases: 4,349, all differently arranged
  • Total amount of windows: 4,500
  • Construction period: June 4th, 1999 to January 25th, 2006
  • Amount of concrete used: 25,000 m³
  • Amount of steel used: 250 tons

Why visit the Torre Glòries

  • Visiting the Torre Agbar or Torre Glòries was not possible for a long time. The viewing platform and a museum were only opened to the public in April 2022.
  • There are also other points from which you can have a great view of the city: Montjuïc, Tibidabo, the towers of the Sagrada Familia, the Eclipse Bar in the Hotel W Barcelona or from Park Güell. However, the Torre Glòries is located in the middle of the urban development and therefore offers a completely different perspective. The tower is unique in this north-eastern part of the city.
  • The tower can be easily reached by metro or double-decker bus. You can reach the top quickly and comfortably with the lift.
  • Why not combine the Torre Glòries with the Design Museum, also a very interesting sight.

This is not a tower

This is not a tower, a skyscraper, in the American sense. It is a more an emergence, rising singularly in the center of a generally calm city. Unlike slender spires and bell towers that typically pierce the horizons of horizontal cities, this tower is a fluid mass that bursts through the ground like a geyser under permanent, calculated pressure.

The surface of the building evokes water: smooth and continuous, shimmering and transparent, its materials reveal themselves in nuanced shades of color and light. It is architecture of the earth without the heaviness of stone, like a distant echo of old Catalan formal obsessions carried by a mysterious wind off the Monserrat.

The ambiguities of material and light make the Agbar tower resonate against Barcelona’s skyline day and night, like a distant mirage, marking the entry into the diagonal avenue from the Plaça de les Glorias. This singular object will become the new symbol of Barcelona the international city, and become one of its best ambassadors.

Torre Agbar

The Torre Agbar, or Agbar Tower, is a 21st-century skyscraper at Placa de les Glories Catalanes, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It was designed by French architect Jean Nouvel in association with the Spanish firm b720 Arquitectos and built by Dragados. It opened in June 2005 and was inaugurated officially by the King of Spain on 16 September 2005. The Torre Agbar is located in the Poblenou neighborhood of Barcelona and is named after its owners, the Agbar Group, a holding company whose interests include the Barcelona water company Aigues de Barcelona.

According to Jean Nouvel, the shape of the Torre Agbar was inspired by Montserrat, a mountain near Barcelona, and by the shape of a geyser rising into the air. Jean Nouvel, in an interview, described it as having a phallic character. As a result of its unusual shape, the building is known by several nicknames, such as "el supositori" (the suppository), "l'obus" (the shell) and some more scatological ones. It is also somewhat similar in shape to Sir Norman Foster's 30 St. Mary Axe in London, often called "the Gherkin". It has 30,000 m2 (323,000 ft2) of above-ground office space, 3,210 m2 (34,500 ft2) of technical service floors with installations and 8,351 m2 (90,000 ft2) of services, including an auditorium. The Agbar Tower measures 144.4 m (473.75 ft) in height and consists of 38 storeys, including four underground levels.

Its design combines a number of different architectural concepts, resulting in a striking structure built with reinforced concrete, covered with a facade of glass, and over 4,500 window openings cut out of the structural concrete. The building stands out in Barcelona; it is the third tallest building in Barcelona, only after the Arts Hotel and the Mapfre Tower, both 154 m (505.25 ft).

A defining feature of the building is its nocturnal illumination. It has 4,500 LED luminous devices that allow generation of luminous images in the facade. In addition, it has temperature sensors in the outside of the tower that regulate the opening and closing of the window blinds of the facade of the building, reducing the consumption of energy for air conditioning. It houses the head office of the Aigues de Barcelona Group, the water supply company of Barcelona.

Formerly called torre agbar, a skyscraper in barcelona.

Torre Glòries Barcelona

Torre Glòries (or Agbar Tower) is the giant, illuminated tower with a height of 142 metres that has towered above Barcelona since 2005.

Torre Agbar - Aguas de Barcelona

Torre Glòries is the giant, illuminated tower with a height of 142 metres that has towered above Barcelona since 2005. The tower is the icon for the modern city. The Agbar Tower (derived from  Ag uas de  Bar celona , the waterworks company in the tower), aka ‘the dildo’, marks the beginning of the high-tech district 22@ in the old industrial area of Poble Nou, that has undergone major changes. The Torre Agbar skyscraper has 34 floors and an area of about 30,000 square metres.

Torre Agbar Barcelona

French architect Jean Nouvel took his inspiration from a number of typically Barcelonian objects to ensure that the Torre Glòries would fit in Barcelona's cityscape. For instance, the cylindrical architecture of the tower is somewhat reminiscent of the Sagrada Familia  and also shows similarities with the tops of Montserrat mountain. Furthermore, the tower looks a little like a blue water jet shooting up from the ground. This is a nod to the waterworks company that has its office in the Glòries Tower . At night, the Agbar tower really shows its beauty when lit up with 4,500 colourful LEDs. During the day, the aluminium sun awnings reflect sunlight.

A Brief History of Barcelona’s Agbar Tower

The Agbar Tower has 38 stories

There are a handful of buildings which have come to define the Barcelona skyline: the Sagrada Família, the W Hotel, the carousel of Mount Tibidabo – and the Torre Agbar. Designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, it is a symbol of Barcelona’s modern face and the urban renewal of the Poblenou neighbourhood , to which it marks the gateway.

Redefining the barcelona skyline.

Designed by famous French architect Jean Nouvel , the Torre Agbar is a 38-storey skyscraper that covers some 50,693 square metres (545,655 square feet) of total surface area. Construction began on the building in 1999, and in 2005, it was inaugurated as the main seat of the Agbar Group, the namesake company by which it is owned, and includes the local waterworks company, Aigües de Barcelona. Despite initially attracting some criticism for its unusual shape, today the tower is considered one of the most emblematic landmarks of the Catalan capital and has become a symbol of the new face of Barcelona.

It is perhaps no coincidence that the building is located in the Poblenou neighbourhood: once the industrial heart of Barcelona, today its warehouses and factories are being converted into art studios, co-working spaces and micro-breweries, as the city’s young, urban elite relocate there. Other relatively new buildings in the area include the Barcelona Design Museum , which opened its doors in 2008.

The structure’s smooth, spherical shape has drawn comparisons to Norman Foster ’s 30 St. Mary Axe building in London, more commonly known as ‘The Gherkin’. On its design, Nouvel himself has said that he drew his inspiration from the nearby mountains of Montserrat, and the building’s shape is said to represent a geyser exploding into the sky. On another occasion, he also recognised that the Torre Agbar had a phallic character – the citizens of Barcelona seem to agree as local nicknames range from ‘el supositori’to other, more sexually, explicit names.

An intelligent design

One of the most remarkable features of the Torre Agbar is its night-time illumination system, which involves some 4,500 LED lighting devices able to produce over 16 million different colours across the entire surface of the building. A complex computer system means that the colours can be programmed to follow animated sequences, which can quickly change from one colour to another. In recent years, the Torre Agbar has become a popular gathering point on New Year’s Eve in Barcelona as it puts on a spectacular display to see in the new year.

Aside from its remarkable exterior, another noteworthy feature of the Torre Agbar is its intelligent system of temperature control. As an example of high-tech architecture, the tower relies on a network of temperature sensors placed on its outside surface to regulate the opening and closing of window blinds, hence increasing energy efficiency by saving on air conditioning. This revolutionary design earned the Torre Agbar the Green Building Award by the European Commission in 2011.

A pioneering example of high-tech architecture

Despite its futurist appearance, the tower was also inspired by Barcelona’s past and by the work of one of its most famous architects of all time: Antoni Gaudí. The bell towers of the Sagrada Família, perhaps the most famous of all Barcelona landmarks, are said to have been a direct inspiration for the Torre Agbar, and it is no coincidence that there are clear views of the cathedral from one of the tower’s faces.

Inspired by the city’s past but also a symbol of the new face of Barcelona and the widespread urban renewal that arose after the 1992 Olympics, the Torre Agbar has rapidly succeeded in establishing itself as a defining feature of Barcelona’s iconic skyline.

The Torre Agbar, whose name is an acronym for Aigües de Barcelona, was built in 2005 and on Avenida Diagonal. This impressive structure has 34 floors, reaching a height of more than 145 metres , which is why you can see it from almost anywhere in the city.

This tower was created by the famous French architect Jean Nouvel , who gave it a peculiar bullet-shaped structure, inspired by the peaks of the mountain of Montserrat. Any time of day is a good time to visit this monument, although we recommend visiting it at night, when the tower is illuminated in different colours creating a real visual spectacle.

Architecturally, the Agbar Tower is a masterpiece. Its façade is made of glass slats with adjustable louvres, each one a different colour. This tower is the entrance to the tech district of the city of Barcelona, sharing space with some of the most technologically advanced companies in the area.

Re-imagine the city with Tomás Saraceno

Suspended at the top of Torre Glòries is Cloud Cities Barcelona, an interactive artwork by artist Tomás Saraceno that transforms the observation deck into a suspended realm in which to gather and dialogue differently. Participants are invited to move along different paths through some of the 113 cloud spaces of communal encounter and critical speculation, occupying an area of 130 m³. The interactive sculpture invites us to look inwards and outwards, to re-think what an observatory in the 21st could be and to imagine the multiplicity of worlds made manifest in the changing shapes of passing clouds.

A web of 6 kilometres of tensioned cables connected by 5000 nodes challenges the verticality of the observatory’s distant gaze through alternative geometries of togetherness. Like droplets of water condensing along the strands of a three-dimensional spider’s web, the connections highlight the interdependence and interrelationship between all living beings that inhabit it, where the actions of one affect the whole community. Communal spaces nestled within the sculpture include a selection of books, available to read, share and engage in collective dialogues and reconsider the threads that bind networks of care.

Dare to experience Tomás Saraceno’s Cloud Cities Barcelona suspended at a height of over 130 metres in the dome of Torre Glòries. Experience an immersive artwork, an invitation to inhabit shared time while considering alternative constellations of the urban public sphere, speculative architectures and the environmental crisis, within an entangled web of life.

To access the sculpture, please refer the current regulations and conditions of use .

Cloud Cities: A space of communal encounter, discourse and critical speculation

Cloud Cities Barcelona builds upon Saraceno’s long-standing artistic inquiry Cloud Cities, a common imaginary for an ethical re-alliance with the environment, the planet and the cosmic/web of life beyond anthropocentrism.

This ludic proposal invites us to move our bodies in a different way while inside a sculpture suspended over the city, opening the imagination to Barcelona’s shared futures as participants engage from diverse bearings, where there is neither up nor down, no inside or outside and all is floating.

The work of Tomás Saraceno, destined to become one of the most relevant sculptures in Barcelona , presents a multitude of layers, redefining what an observatory can be in the 21st century:

  • The active interaction, through which it stimulates our senses.
  • The impulse to consider the role we have in the community, as we rethink the architectures and geometries that make up the city.

On a conceptual level, Saraceno proposes a sculpture based on Cloud Cities, one of his main objects of study as an artist. Cloud Cities Barcelona has different readings. On the one hand, recreational, as it allows visitors to move through a sculpture that floats suspended above the city. On the other hand, a reflection on utopian futures where fossil fuels are not needed for travel, as well as on the interdependence of all living beings, where the movement of one affects the entire community.

In this way, Tomás Saraceno’s work offers two different readings:

  • Challenging the verticality of the cupola’s distant gaze through alternative geometries of togetherness.
  • The impulse to rethink the role intertwined ecologies play in the city, whilst floating amidst the clouds of Barcelona.

When clouds appear like rocks and towers, the Earth’s refreshed with frequent showers. If spiders break off and remove their webs, the weather will soon be wet. Stable climates might be granted if souls remain open to webbed encounters. Tomás Saraceno

Tomás Saraceno’s immersive sculpture is his first permanent art installation in the country and his largest interactive sculpture in southern Europe. Suspended inside the tower’s dome and built using a structure of tensioned cables, Cloud Cities Barcelona can also be read in figures:

About Tomás Saraceno

Tomás Saraceno is an Argentina-born, Berlin-based artist whose projects dialogue with forms of life and life-forming, rethinking dominant threads of knowledge in the patriarchal era of the Capitalocene and recognising how diverse modes of being engage a multiplicity of vibrations in the Web of Life.

For more than two decades, Saraceno has activated projects aimed at rethinking the co-creation of the atmosphere, including Museo Aero Solar (2007-) and the Aerocene Foundation (2015-), towards a society free from carbon emissions and the abuses of the Capitalocene. Aerocene has floated 7060 minutes in the air free from carbon in 110 tethered flights, 15 free flights and 8 human flights. The 2020 project Fly with Aerocene Pacha , stood in solidarity with the indigenous communities of Salinas Grandes (Jujuy) and their protest against harmful lithium extraction practices in northern Argentina. With Aerocene, Pacha set 32 world records, marking the most sustainable flight in human history.

Arachnophilia, an interdisciplinary, research-driven community, also emerged from the artist’s more than 10 years of collaboration with humans, spiders and their webs. With researchers at the TU Darmstadt, Saraceno developed the Spider/Web Scan, a novel, laser-supported tomographic technique that allowed precise 3D models of complex spider/webs to be made for the first time. Nggàm dù, a web portal by the spider diviners of Somié (Cameroon), meditates on the possibilities of reciprocal, intercultural and inter- and intraspecies relations.

Saraceno’s work with local communities, scientific researchers and institutions around the world, aims to seek out a more equal balance of human, techno- and bio- diversity , with the understanding that knowledge is produced from specific situations. Within the variety and scale of his art practice, he has held numerous residencies including MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology (2012-) and Atelier Calder (2010); published in Nature and PNAS; presented a TED talk; staged artistic interventions with COP20, COP21 and COP26; has lectured at Princeton, Columbia, Centre Pompidou, Herald Design Forum, Hirshhorn Museum, CCK and Interspecies Internet, among other locations.

He has also been the subject of solo exhibitions and permanent installations at museums and institutions worldwide, including The Shed, New York (2022); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2018); Museo de Arte Moderno, Buenos Aires (2017); K21 Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Ständehaus, Dusseldorf (2013); the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2012); and Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin (2011). Saraceno has participated in numerous festivals and biennales, including the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale (2020) and the 53rd and 58th Venice Biennales (2009, 2019).

Saraceno lives and works in and beyond planet Earth.
