We would like to invite you to take a tour of our city. Especially worth seeing are the town museum in the former Franciscan monastery, Park and Villa Bergfried and the four city gates.

Park and Villa Bergfried

On a hill in Saalfeld with a view over the Saale valley, the town and the neighbouring mountains, a spacious villa complex and a park of about 15 hectares were built in the years 1924 - 1930 for the families of the manufacturer of the chocolate factory "Mauxion", Ernst Hüther. Based on designs by the architect Prof. Max Hans Kühne and in consultation with the probably most important garden architecture firm in Germany at the time, the Ludwig Späth company, an ensemble was created which is one of the most important and beautiful cultural monuments of the 1920s in Thuringia today. The design highlight of the entire complex is an architecturally designed axis, leading from the ornamental courtyard of the manor house to the pond house via a trimmed, multi-rowed linden avenue. A circular path in the style of an English landscape garden leads around the otherwise extensively modelled and park-like planted grounds. In 1948, the Hüther were expropriated. From 1949 to 1992, the building was used as a sanatorium by various sponsors. Since 1998, the town of Saalfeld has administered the Bergfried House and Park.

A bell tower was erected on the edge of the slope above the rock garden, lily pond, Japanese garden and bear kennel. Here, the oldest carillon in Germany rings out daily at 12:00 and 18:00. On special occasions it is also played manually.

From April 2021, an exhibition on the villa, park and the life of the Hüther family in the 1920s will open in the former gardener's house.

The Franciscan Monastery - from a holy religious place to a city museum

The Franciscan monastery is home to one of Thuringia's most beautiful museums of urban and cultural history. The Franciscan monks were members of a mendicant order. They were very popular with the citizens of Saalfeld. Not far from the market square, the monastery welcomes you on a journey into the past. An exhibition on the town and regional history from the Stone Age to the 20th century as well as current special exhibitions awaits you on 2,700 m 2 .

City gates Saalfeld

Even today, you can still find a number of architectural testimonies from different periods in Saalfeld. For example, the city wall with four town gates. Two of these city gates can be visited.

After many decades in which the city gate could only be visited from the outside, it is now possible to experience an interesting exhibition on the history and architecture.

Join a Nuremberg merchant on his journey along the old trade route and experience the time around 1600. Discover the Stone Chronicle with 3D images from a bird's eye view. The gatekeeper is already waiting for you ...

City Gate “Darrtor“

Of the five former medieval town gates of Saalfeld, the Darrtor holds a special position in the town wall. The gate tower formed the passage to the former village community of “Alter Markt”, which lay directly behind it, i.e. outside the town wall. With a few minutes' walk from Saalfeld's market square you are able to ascent the fourth floor of the town gate, which is worthwhile.

From the platform, visitors can discover something in all directions. The panoramic view reaches over the historic old town and its surroundings to the mountains of the Thuringian Slate Mountains in the south, to the Orlasenke in the east and to the wooded heights of the Heide in the north.

After extensive renovations in the 1990s, the gate tower was opened to visitors. Following the visit to the Darrtor, a gastronomic establishment in the former gatekeeper's cottage invites visitors to enjoy and relax.

Due to the current situation, the gate cannot be visited at the moment!

Countless stalactite formations in a colorful splendor of colors and shapes adorn the walls, ceilings and floors of the grottoes and turn the underground cavities into a natural work of art.

Take a deep breath in the underground healing cave – since 1937

The Heilstollen of the Saalfeld Fairy Grottoes is one of the oldest healing caves in Germany. A visit in the natrule grottes is like a short vacation from everyday life. The absolutely pure air improves respiratory function, strengthens the immune system, calms the soul, and brings people back to themselves and gives them strength - without any negative side effects. Doctors and scientists attribute the effectiveness of the Heilstollen therapy to the particularly favorable climatic conditions in the caves:

- almost completely free of dust, germs, bacteria, allergens, ozone and pollen

- relative air humidity of approximately 98 %

- constant temperatures of 8 to 10 °C

"The unique climate of the Feengrotten healing gallery offers better conditions for a therapeutic effect than the mountain or sea climate." Volker Bergmann, MD Specialist for internal medicine and pneumology Rudolstadt, spa doctor in Saalfeld.

  • If the processing of your personal data was/is conducted in an unlawful manner, you have the option to demand the restriction of the processing of your data in lieu of demanding the eradication of this data.
  • If we do not need your personal data any longer and you need it to exercise, defend or claim legal entitlements, you have the right to demand the restriction of the processing of your personal data instead of its eradication.
  • If you have raised an objection pursuant to Art. 21(1) GDPR, your rights and our rights will have to be weighed against each other. As long as it has not been determined whose interests prevail, you have the right to demand a restriction of the processing of your personal data.

If you have restricted the processing of your personal data, these data – with the exception of their archiving – may be processed only subject to your consent or to claim, exercise or defend legal entitlements or to protect the rights of other natural persons or legal entities or for important public interest reasons cited by the European Union or a member state of the EU.

The fairy grotto town on the river Saale

Idyllically situated in the picturesque Saale valley on the edge of the Thuringian Slate Mountains, Saalfeld with its 1,100-years of history is one of the oldest towns in Thuringia. That the city of fairy grottos has a lot to offer is already revealed by its nickname "Stone Chronicle of Thuringia". On a stroll through the city center there is much to be discovered, including the Renaissance Town Hall, the Hoher Schwarm castle ruins, the four city gates, St. John's Church and the city museum in the former Franciscan monastery, all of which are particularly worth seeing.

On a tour through the "most colorful show caverns in the world" (Guinness Book of Records) you will discover a fascinating underground world and at the same time learn a lot of interesting facts about how it evolved, the former life of the miners, and more.
