Planning a romantic getaway? Here are the best couples' vacation spots around the world to visit with your special someone.

nearby places to visit with gf

One of the best parts of being in a relationship is having a built-in travel buddy — and enjoying uninterrupted one-on-one time as you visit new places together. A trip with your significant other, whether domestic or international, almost always guarantees you'll learn something new about one another — perhaps your girlfriend gets a rush from cliff diving, or your boyfriend can make friends with anyone despite only being able to say one phrase in the local language.

When you're deciding where you want to go, consider which components of a romantic getaway matter most to you. Are you up for sightseeing and doing outdoorsy activities together or do you lean more toward enjoying quiet moments in intimate settings with a view?

For instance, couples looking for a chance to fully unwind might opt for a beach vacation or spa weekend in a beautiful destination, while those searching for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure may want to book an African safari. Foodie couples might want to eat their way through Paris's fine restaurants, while more active travelers may prefer to hit the slopes or go snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef.

Whatever your travel style, here are 25 of the best vacation spots for couples.

Bali, Indonesia

Daniel Gorostieta/Travel + Leisure

If your version of romance is hiking through monkey forests and rolling rice paddies — or dancing to DJ sets and light shows until the wee hours of the morning — head to Bali, a beautiful Indonesian isle known for its vibrant nightlife scene. Stroll hand-in-hand on white-sanded shores in the southern part of the island or by the volcanic black sand beaches of its northern and eastern coasts. In addition to historic temples and shrines, Bali is also home to heaps of high-end resorts, yoga classes, spas, and Australian-influenced cafes worth checking out during your trip.

Santorini, Greece

Monica Farber / Travel + Leisure

Visiting Santorini is like traveling to a cloud-like oasis that envelops you in an ethereal fantasy. In other words, there's no surprise as to why it's a popular choice among newlyweds looking for a picture-perfect honeymoon destination . The romance of the island pretty much sells itself; wandering the hilly, weathered streets, you'll be surrounded by bright white walls and blue roofs, while in the evenings, you'll have front-row seats to incredible sunsets. Once the sun is down, the island really lights up, with its houses, churches, and restaurants glowing like stars.

Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Ashour Rehana / Getty Images

Aside from traveling to Tanzania to hike Mount Kilimanjaro, many make the trip to see the country's incredible wildlife conservation sites and national parks. Going on a safari allows you and your significant other to share some unique firsts: the first time you see a lion, the first time you drive across the African plains, dotted with baobab trees, or the first time you meet someone from the local Indigenous community, to name a few.

You'll want to visit Ngorongoro Crater , the world's largest inactive and intact volcanic caldera. Its bowl-like shape makes a natural border for the animals, boosting the chances safari goers will be able to spot all of the Big Five — lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo — during a tour. Serengeti National Park is another popular safari destination because of the area's mass seasonal migrations of wildebeest and zebra, its large lion population, and the sheer diversity of habitats and animals you'll find here.

Tulum, Mexico

NurPhoto / Getty Images

Two core pillars of many romantic vacations are relaxing in intimate settings and enjoying exciting experiences, and Tulum has plenty of chances for you to do both. Rotate between lounging out on tropical beaches, snorkeling at nearby Xel-Ha Park , swimming in a natural sinkhole (or cenote), and touring ancient Mayan ruins, many of which are still intact. After a perfect day in Tulum , packed with leisure, adventure, or both, the cherry on top will be grabbing a drink at Gitano and relishing in its funky jungle atmosphere.

Whistler, Canada

A great way to bond as a couple is by getting active, and skiing on Whistler and Blackcomb mountains is great for both veteran and beginner skiers alike. Take on the mountains, offering numerous trails of varying intensity, enjoy an overhead view of the snow-capped trees from sprawling gondolas, break for lunch at the mid-mountain lodge, and top off your day with an après ski special at one of the slope-side bars. If one day of skiing leaves you with wobbly legs and your fill of downhill action, there's a lot more going on at the base of the peaks. Whistler Village is a lively, pedestrian-only hub of bars, shops, and restaurants. The little winter wonderland is as charming as the inside of a snow globe, and what's better for a romantic getaway than that?

Cappadocia, Turkey

UIG / Getty Images

For a fairytale vacation, there's nothing more fitting than a landscape dotted with "fairy chimneys," the tall, thin cones topping the many rock sites of Cappadocia. Cave churches, underground cities, and homes carved into the rocks work to create a whimsical aura usually reserved for the fictional realm. Floating high above the rocky terrain in a brightly-designed hot air balloon , you'll feel like characters wandering the pages of a Dr. Seuss book (or like astronauts discovering a civilization on the moon). Either way, the otherworldly experience will have you recapturing your sense of childlike wonder and awe together.

Paris, France

Most clichés became clichés for a reason, and so is the case with Paris' romantic reputation. Looking at pictures of couples in the City of Light, you can practically see the cartoon hearts in their eyes as they embrace in front of the Eiffel Tower. Paris and romance go together like Valentine's Day and chocolate, anniversary dinners and candlelit bistros, marriage proposals and world-famous landmarks… all of which Paris is not-so-coincidentally known for having.

Hakone, Japan

Zhang Yun / Getty Images

While not as romanticized for cherry-blossomed strolls as its neighbor, Kyoto, Hakone is a worthy day trip from Tokyo, offering an intimate escape from city travel in the most relaxing way possible: hot springs resorts . Aside from relaxing in onsen (hot springs) at a traditional ryokan (Japanese inn), you can take advantage of the natural sites, like Lake Ashi and the volcano Mount Fuji , or tour the fire-engine red Hakone Shrine and open-air sculpture museum . The many transportation options , ranging from boats and cable cars to rolling train routes through the mountains, also seem like mini adventures, making yours all the more memorable.

Northern Norway

AFP / Getty Images

If you've ever considered stargazing a romantic experience, northern Norway really ups the ante with its naturally occuring cosmic activity. The region covers about one-third of the country and is considered one of the best places to see the northern lights in Norway . They usually make an appearance from autumn to mid-April, while from late April to mid-August, the sun is still visible late at night thanks to a natural phenomenon known as the " midnight sun ."

Feeling adventurous? Venture even farther north to Svalbard, the northernmost inhabited region of Europe, to experience 24-hour daylight between April and August. On the opposite end of the light spectrum, Svalbard's January and February months have "polar nights," when night lasts for around 24 hours, making the aurora borealis particularly visible.

If you do decide to take this kind of trip together, be warned: Looking up at the stars in your own backyard might not be quite as impressive anymore.

Porto, Portugal

Paula Galindo Valle / Travel + Leisure

Porto is a waterfront merchant city that seemingly transports visitors to an earlier time with its cobblestoned streets, baroque churches, and prevalence of port factories and family-owned businesses. Nearby in the Duoro Valley , you can visit vineyards where wine has been produced for more than 2,000 years, sample it, and participate in harvesting practices such as stomping on the grapes. It's the perfect part of Portugal to spend a day or two , if not longer. In a city infused with the culture of wine making and drinking, you and your significant other can get tipsy on the energy alone.

Amalfi Coast, Italy

Known for its natural and architectural beauty, Italy's Amalfi Coast is a prime choice for a romantic Mediterranean getaway. Travelers can bask in the natural scenery, hike through dreamy seaside villages with picturesque views, and visit famous sites such as the Grotta dello Smeraldo (the " Emerald Grotto "), as well as medieval churches, gardens, and museums. When you need some quiet time for just the two of you, there are a number of secluded hotels offering oceanfront views and luxurious amenities.

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Filippo Bacci / Getty Images

In Argentina's bustling capital, you and your significant other will never run out of activities to try, with lots of live entertainment and a multitude of restaurants and bars. For a day-to-night date, La Boca is a vibrant neighborhood known for Tango dancing and El Caminito, a pedestrian walkway lined with houses and shops painted in bright primary colors — strolling through this vibrant neighborhood is one of our favorite things to do in Buenos Aires .

Whitsunday Islands, Australia

At the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, these 74 islands off the coast of Queensland, Australia, will have you sailing into uncharted relationship territory with unbelievable sites to discover together. Whitehaven Beach is one of the most popular white-sand beaches in the country — despite it being a tourist hotspot, you've got 4.3 miles to play with, making it easy to stretch out and find your own space.

In addition to enjoying blissful beach days, you can embark on some truly unforgettable and romantic excursions while visiting the islands, such as flying over Heart Reef in a helicopter, staying aboard a boat for a few days, or snorkeling at the legendary Great Barrier Reef.

South Caicos, Turks and Caicos

Design Pics / Helene Cyr / Getty Images

While Turks and Caicos is certainly not a new destination for romantic vacations, most visitors flock to Providenciales, the first major stopping point on the tropical archipelago.

Far less popular (and far more secluded) are the pristine beaches of South Caicos , just a short, scenic connecting flight away. If you're looking for something truly special — perhaps to celebrate an anniversary or another special occasion — Sailrock Resort is a luxury property nestled within natural brush along white-sand shores that lead into crystal-clear water. You'll experience the type of picturesque serenity you thought was only accessible to movie stars, yet there the two of you will be, sipping colorful cocktails together on a hammock at the beach's edge, with nothing but the open, beautiful horizon spanning ahead of you.

No matter how active you decide to be, Barbados is one of the best vacation spots for couples. The island's west coast is home to several high-end resorts with various offerings to make your Caribbean escape extra memorable. Arrange some classic island excursions, such as snorkeling, private boat trips with companies such as Seaduced , or visits to local attractions like the spectacular Hunte's Gardens and Rihanna's childhood home.

For a dose of local cuisine and culture, spend an upbeat Friday night at Oistins fish fry or sample some of the island's best rums on a tour of the Mount Gay rum distillery . You could also kick back and make relaxation your number-one priority by simply enjoying the beautiful beaches and temperate water. For a dinner you won't soon forget, head to The Cliff , which overlooks the water in a sultry, fire-adorned setting.

Dalmatian Coast, Croatia

For the ultimate romantic vacation, charter a boat and sail along the Dalmatian Coast in Croatia. If you start your journey in Dubrovnik and end up in Split, you'll get a comprehensive look at the country, from nautical exploration to sightseeing in both small seaport towns and big cities. With a stopover in a new place every night, the transit is part of the fun, rather than merely a means to get from point A to point B.

Travelers mainly book Turkish gulets (or small yachts) with separate quarters for the crew. Companies like Gulet Yacht Adriatic Holiday offer packages that include the services of a captain, chef, and one or two crew members to help curate not just your route, but everything else you do while you're on the water or shore. While the busy season is typically from June through early September, trips also set out in October and make a great option if you want a bit more quiet and privacy on the Adriatic Sea.

Cotswolds, England

Gavin Guan / Getty Images

Step into a romantic period piece on a vacation in the Cotswolds , located in the picturesque English countryside. The rolling hills and fields are dotted with the most quaint towns you'll ever find — popular stops include Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water, and Castle Combe. Grab a pint in a storied pub or tea in a cute cafe after spending the day exploring town after adorable town.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jay Yuan / Getty Images

What could be more romantic than snuggling up by the fire after a day out in the snow? In Jackson Hole , you can enjoy winter sports in a stunning setting just a short distance from Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks . Plus, you can book a stay at a luxurious property like Amangani or the Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole for a truly romantic trip — or the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort if you're both skiing or snowboarding enthusiasts.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston is often a favorite city among Travel + Leisure readers , and once you visit, it's easy to see why. Dine at delicious restaurants, take a sunset cruise in the harbor (where you may even spot a dolphin or two), and visit one of the nearby beaches. For romantic accommodations, we recommend staying outside the city on Kiawah Island, a little under an hour's drive away, where you'll find The Sanctuary , a beachfront luxury hotel.

Tucson, Scottsdale, and Sedona, Arizona

Looking for a mindful way to connect with your partner? Consider booking a trip to a wellness resort with a spa and classes to deepen your relationship. Miraval Arizona , located in Tucson, has an all-inclusive experience that throws in fitness classes, health and wellness lectures, and spa treatments, among other amenities. The Civana Wellness Resort & Spa near Scottsdale offers a serene escape amid the Sonoran Desert, while Sedona, with its red rocks and mysterious vortexes, is another popular destination among wellness travelers.

Kauai, Hawaii

Mark Wilson / Getty Images

Find paradise together on a trip to Kauai , Hawaii's Garden Isle. You'll find the best of both worlds, with a beautiful mix of lush jungle landscapes and beautiful beaches. Spend your days alternating between lounging or strolling hand-and-hand along the shores and exploring its natural wonders by foot, boat, or helicopter. Popular romantic resort options include Timbers Kauai in Lihue and Koʻa Kea Hotel & Resort in Poipu Beach.

Napa Valley, California

Akshat Mehta / EyeEm / Getty Images

A romantic jaunt to California's wine country might be the perfect getaway for couples looking for delicious vino, beautiful views, and world-class dining. Spend a few days touring vineyards together and tasting different varietals while gazing out at the rolling, vine-covered hills. You can also opt for a ride on the Napa Valley Wine Train for more scenic views. Retire to one of the many beautiful luxury resorts in the area, such as the Auberge du Soleil , Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley , or Solage, Auberge Resorts Collection .

Sea Island, Georgia

This Georgia barrier island resort offers secluded, five-star luxury across several styles of accommodations, including The Cloister, located in the heart of the resort, as well as private cottages. In addition to the beach, guests can golf, lounge by the pools, enjoy spa treatments, and participate in other activities like tennis and horseback riding.

New York City

For some couples, taking on a major metropolis is just as romantic as spending a week by the beach. And when it comes to big city destinations in the United States, it's hard to beat New York City . Every night is date night on vacation, so go to dinner and take in a Broadway show, enjoy extended evening hours at some of the world's best museums, visit acclaimed restaurants and cocktail bars, and stroll through Central Park to soak in the sights and sounds of the Big Apple.

Palm Springs, California

Escape to the desert with a trip to Palm Springs, surrounded by picturesque mountains and lined with palm trees. Plan your visit in the spring, fall, or winter to avoid the intense summer heat, and admire mid-century modern architecture as you hit the links or head to the spa. The Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage is a luxe pick for a pool with a view, while the Parker Palm Springs is another trendy choice.

The Best Girlfriend Weekend Getaways in the USA

06/18/2019 by Kristin Addis 5 Comments

Planning a weekend getaway with your girlfriends? Here are 10 wonderful destinations in the USA that's perfect for everybody - whether your friend group prefers the outdoors, a lively or peaceful atmosphere, something natural, or more of a city vibe. If you have a long weekend coming up, this is the list for you! #USATravelTips #WeekendGetaway

As much as I love my solitude, I wouldn’t be who I am without my girlfriends. The women who have helped shape me and who continue to be my biggest cheerleaders hold a very special place in my life, and in my travels. Each year, we make it a point to have an adventure together at least once.

Though I’ve been lucky enough to travel in Thailand and Europe a few times with some of my friends, for the most part we focus on hanging in the USA, where we’re from. Given how much variety there is stateside, there’s no shortage of girlfriend getaways we can pack into a weekend.

Whether your friend group prefers the outdoors, a lively or peaceful atmosphere, something natural, or more of a city vibe, there’s something on this list that can make everyone in your group happy. These are some of our favorite girlfriend weekend getaways:

Table of Contents

1. Moab, Utah

needles overlook

This little slice of Utah is one of my favorite places on the entire planet. The town itself has a funky, laid back vibe, but the real magic is out in the multitude of state and national parks in the area. Within a max of 45 minutes from town you’ve got Arches National Park , Dead Horse Point State Park, Canyonlands National Park, and all of the arches and stunning natural areas that border them.

While this is more of an outdoorsy suggestion, many of the more stunning points of interest are overlooks that you can drive right up to, including the famous Mesa Arch, The Windows, the Needles Overlook, and Dead Horse Point. For a more comprehensive list of ideas,  check out this post .

Stay: This is the perfect place for camping, but if you’d rather opt for glamping or a hotel, those options are available too. For a truly unique experience, check out Under Canvas Moab .

Getting There: Fly into Salt Lake City and enjoy the 4-hour drive to Moab. This one is best for long weekends!

2. Orange County, California

orange county

As a former resident of Newport Beach in Orange County , I can say with certainty that this is the perfect girlfriend weekend getaway that truly has something for everyone. There’s the gorgeous stretch of coastline, great shopping at Fashion Island, Disneyland is only a 15-minute drive away, and so is Angels Stadium if you’re baseball lovers. Though it’s a bit pricey, you can also take a helicopter ride over the OC for a truly unique viewpoint and the perfect overview of it all.

Stay: VRBO  is a great option in this area if you want to stay on the beach in Newport – and you should!

Getting there: Getting to the coast is easy and painless with a flight into John Wayne Airport (SNA) and a quick drive to one of the beach towns.

3. Washington, D.C.

girlfriend weekend getaways dc

For East Coast friend groups, DC is an easy one since it’s such a hub for flights from all around the US. There are so many neighborhoods in the city and it’s so rich in history, plus it’s beautiful. I’m a big fan of the free Smithsonian museums, Botanic Garden, and the National Gallery of Art. Here’s a listing of 14 free museums in DC .

If you’re craving some sea views, Annapolis is only 50 minutes away. If your group loves horses, Middleburg, VA is only an hour and 25 minute drive away. Here’s a listing of more ideas .

Stay : Georgetown is a cool college area with great nightlife.

Getting there: Both Washington Dulles and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport work for your DC getaway, though the latter is much closer.

4. Las Vegas, Nevada

seven magic mountains

Out of all the places on this list, this is the one my girlfriends and I have visited the most often. The airport is so well connected, there’s not shortage of things to do, and it’s also naturally beautiful all around Vegas.

While seeing world-class shows and dancing the day away at pool parties (a favorite of ours) are great ways to spend one’s time, I also highly recommend heading away from the Strip for a day and checking out the Seven Magic Mountains art installation just a 20 minute drive down Interstate 15, or heading north to the Valley of Fire State Park for a sunrise or sunset.

Stay : We usually book the best deal on the Strip, though our favorites are Mandalay Bay and the MGM Grand .

Getting there: Las Vegas McCarran International Airport is super close to the Strip and easy to find flight deals to!

5. Santa Barbara, California

El capitan campgrounds

I’ll admit I’m biased towards Santa Barbara, since it’s the college town where I met my girlfriends, but we adore meeting up in SB for a weekend of fun in the sun. Not only are there some of the most gorgeous beaches in the country (Butterfly Beach and Haskell’s), but also there is some of the best shopping on State Street and beautiful hiking trails in Montecito.

Stay: Though Santa Barbara might seem pretty high-end, there are great campgrounds nearby at El Capitan and Gaviota where I see dolphins every single time I camp there, as well as cheaper VRBO options in SB’s neighbor, Goleta.

Getting there: Santa Barbara Airport is so small and lovely to fly into!

6. Austin, Texas

girlfriend getaway austin texas

Austin is probably Texas’ most beloved city, not just for the wealth of things to do, but for the alternative vibe. Some of my favorite activities there involve the water, including tubing down the river or visiting Barton Springs, a natural spring-fed pool, with a year-round average temperature of  68°F (20°C). Depending on time of year, make it a point to attend SXSW festival or a Longhorns football game.

Stay: I stayed at the JW Marriott downtown while in Austin and loved the room and location.

Getting there:  Austin–Bergstrom International Airport has plenty of nonstop flights on Southwest Airlines from all around the country, and for cheap!

7. Sedona, Arizona

sedona girlfirend getaway

Sedona is a little artist’s oasis in Arizona with a hippie vibe and a wealth of beautiful day hikes. If your girlfriends enjoy a nice hike now and then but prefer to sleep in a hotel at night, this is the perfect compromise between the outdoorsy and the comfortable, without breaking the bank. Some of the best hikes are the Devil’s Bridge, Bell Rock, and Cathedral Rock. They’re all pretty short, moderate hikes with a big payoff at the end. For more things to do in Arizona, check out my itinerary .

Stay: There are plenty of cute VRBOs in Sedona to choose from.

Getting there:  Flagstaff International Airport is the closest small commercial airport to Sedona, or fly to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) and drive for two hours to reach Sedona.

8.  San Francisco Bay Area, California

Bay bridge baker beach

This one’s a natural fit for me because so many of my girlfriends live here, so I’ve seen all of the tourist and non-touristy sights in the Bay Area and keep going back! For a great view of the Bay Bridge, head to Baker Beach. If you’re interested in a more alternative vibe, I love Oakland’s Lake Merritt area for its eateries, and on Sundays, Ecstatic Dance is a favorite of ours. In the city, be sure to check out the Painted Ladies for the perfect photo op or walk along The Presidio for some nature. Haight-Ashbury is one of my favorite places to shop and hang out as well!

Stay: SF can be expensive but if you split a  VRBO  it can be a bit more affordable.

Getting there: Both San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Oakland International Airport (OAK) are easy to fly into, though I prefer Oakland since it’s smaller. Pick based on where you’ll spend more time.

9. Ft. Myers, Florida

florida sailing school

While Miami might seem like a more likely girlfriend getaway than Ft. Myers, hear me out! This little stretch of beach and accompanying islands on the Gulf Side of Florida has two things that make it perfect for girlfriends who love the water – sailing lessons and kayaking through gorgeous mangroves. Those two things made me fall in love with Ft. Myers and honestly, a weekend of sailing with friends sounds like tons of fun to me! You can learn more about sailing in Ft. Myers here.

Stay: I loved Pink Shell Resort and Marina ‘s huge rooms.

Getting there: Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) is an easy 30-minute drive from downtown Ft. Myers.

10. Portland, Oregon

Multnomah Falls girlfriend getaways

Have you ever heard the slogan, ‘Keep Portland Weird’? That’s what’s so alluring about the city, plus the gorgeous Multnomah waterfalls that are only a 35-minute drive from the city, and a 2.2-mile hike to the top of the falls. Portland is perfect for live music, perusing the books at the largest independent bookstore in the world, Powell’s Books, and the (easy) hike to Mt. Tabor. Here’s a list with more things to do including farmer’s markets and free gardens.

Stay: The Inn at Northrup Station is cute, affordable, and well-loved.

Getting there: Fly into Portland International Airport (PDX).

I hope your girlfriend group loves these spots as much as mine has. Whether you’re craving the ocean, the warmth of the desert, the ease of a city getaway, or something that combines the outdoors and creature comforts, this list has a mix of many at once.

Cliché as it may be, there's something about reconnecting with your girls over shopping and beaching. And this (relatively) low-key locale offers the best of both worlds: First-class shopping on Las Olas Boulevard and insane beaches without fuss or fanfare. At the Marriott's resort outpost, enjoy a slice of South Florida's largest stretch of private beach — you'll definitely have to convince a friend to pull Instagram husband duty to help you get an epic #travelgram in the tropical lagoon pool. Oh, and there's a spa, too, if saltwater isn't your thing. When you can pry yourself away from the water, show off your culinary prowess in a group cooking class with the property's executive chef. For those who prefer to imbibe their adventures, soak up an orangey-pink sunset with libations on the veranda at The Lodge at Sea Island while the resident bagpiper serenades you, travel to the nearby Jekyll Island for extra views, or opt to sign up for a private wine tasting in The Cloister Wine Cellar. Honolulu, Hawaii

waikiki beach

Perk #1 of doing Hawaii with just your girlfriends: You won't have to hear your husband complain about stopping to take pictures every twenty minutes. Perk #2: All-day spa days are encouraged. After you hike Diamond Head and enjoy a tiki drink (or two) on the beach, you'll want to retreat with your pals to the The Na Ho'ola Spa , where pampering may include 50 minutes of bliss in the form of a champagne body scrub or a brightening facial that soothes with a unique blend of organic botanicals. Once (um, if) you can peel yourself away from the spa, enjoy the four Ss — swimming, surfing, snorkeling, and sailing — to your heart's content.

Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

Book your stay at the Abe Martin Lodge , which will put you in the middle of Indiana's largest state park (this means you've got 16,000 acres to explore). 20 Perfect Fall Girlfriend Getaways You'll Want To Plan Immediately

With a new season comes new reasons to get together with your best girlfriends. Plan a getaway at some of the best Southern fall destinations.

Since 1966, the editors of Southern Living have been carrying out the mission of the brand: to bring enjoyment, fulfillment, and inspiration to our readers by celebrating life in the South. We inspire creativity in their homes, their kitchens, their gardens, and their personal style. We are a friend they can trust, a guide to the seasons, a helping hand during the holidays, and a relentless champion of the Southern way of life.

nearby places to visit with gf

Once the bustle of summer has come and gone, seasonal sadness can sometimes accompany our excitement for all things fall. The coming of a new season is just one of many reasons to get together with your best girlfriends and plan a fabulous getaway full of quality time. When it comes to perfect girls' weekends, the possibilities are endless . You can visit an exciting city, relax at a beautiful beach (without the sweltering heat), or explore a cozy mountain town.

You're bound to have a great time with your gal pals no matter the place—but a little planning never hurts! Some iconic destinations make great picks, but lesser-known places can be just as fun. We're here to get you started with locations , restaurants, and ideas for a stellar trip with your ladies.

Savannah, Georgia

This city is rich with historic character, as it's one of the oldest cities in Georgia. Savannah 's Southern charm, cobblestone streets, and river views make it a great getaway for girlfriends who want to see and do it all—from photo-op squares to trendy restaurants. It gets muggy here in the summertime, so fall is a much nicer time to visit if you're planning on exploring historic downtown. Stay at Perry Lane Hotel , a boutique property in the historic district that somehow manages to be sleek and modern. Don't miss the rooftop bar, Peregrin . Take your ladies to The Grey for spectacularly unique farm-to-table Southern cooking, and finish the weekend with brunch and a Mint Julep at The Collins Quarter .

Florida's 30A

All within short drives or bike rides from each other, this Panhandle spot has terrific restaurants and shops at every neighboring beach for you and your friends. On 30A , you can go for the Seaside Seeing Red Wine Festival or a less crowded weekend in Grayton Beach, the saltier sister town just down the road. For a Latin-inspired lunch with a view, go to Chiringo in Grayton . Bud & Alley's in Seaside also offers gorgeous scenery and amazing crabs. The best option is to rent a condo or house in these two spots, but you can stay at the WaterColor Inn in Santa Rosa Beach or The Pearl Hotel for a convenient booking that's still close.

Asheville, North Carolina

From Biltmore to breweries , this funky town has much to offer you and your friends. You can stay at the award-winning Inn on Biltmore Estate , which always has exciting installations or garden attractions that make great afternoon strolls for the group. Another great option is the Grand Bohemian Hotel Asheville , a luxury boutique hotel. Stop by Highland Brewing , the original craft brewery of "Beer City," as Asheville is nicknamed. Eat at at Buxton Hall Bar-B-Cue for the pulled pork and keepsake t-shirts. You'll also find a Bourbon & Cheerwine Slushie and Banana Pudding Pie with house-made vanilla bean pudding on the menu. For a breakfast staple, try Biscuit Head , which features biscuits topped with your choice of gravies. Yes, five. Need some exercise after all that food? All around the town, you'll find hikes that boast breathtaking mountain views.

Fairhope, Alabama

We recommend staying in nearby Point Clear at the Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa , a pre-Civil War resort dripping with Southern charm. Among the amenities and activities are resort-style pools, tennis courts, afternoon tea, and a daily ceremonial cannon firing. During the day, venture over to Fairhope , just a few minutes away, for shopping in the quaint village. This getaway is ideal for a group of girlfriends looking for a relaxing trip with some leisurely shopping, great sunset views of the Bay, and pampering spa treatments. In the fall, it is much less crowded. Fairhope is a biking town with trails that wind along the coast and through beautiful historic neighborhoods. Bring your own, rent them in town, or get them at no extra charge from the hotel if you're staying at the Grand.

Fredericksburg, Texas

Fredericksburg might be not hidden necessarily, but it's still a gem. The thriving village of German heritage has more than 150 shops and galleries (many in fine old stone buildings along Main Street) and well-preserved German landmarks. Many inns and bed-and-breakfasts are within walking distance of restaurants, live music, and biergartens. There are also the area's wineries, several of which grow from the idyllic pastures alongside U.S. 290. After a day touring the wine road , enjoy the flavors of kolaches (yeast buns filled with fruit or sausage) at Hill Country Donuts and Kolaches , and turn your head at the occasional Willkommen (the Bavarian greeting) back in town.

Oxford, Mississippi

Whether you select a weekend in Oxford with or without a home football game is entirely up to you, though your choice most likely will rest on whether someone in the group is an Ole Miss fan. There will be a wider variety of things to do (and much smaller crowds) if you choose a weekend with no home game, and you'll get to fully enjoy the Square and all of the shopping, dining, and exploring you want with your favorite girlfriends. We suggest staying at The Graduate and hitting up shops like Cicada and Square Books while you're out and about. Southern establishments like Big Bad Breakfast and City Grocery will leave you full, but you'll still wish for more.

Key West, Florida

Key West is one of those places that can make you feel like you're far, far away—if only for a few days. Located at the southernmost tip of Florida, the island has low-key beaches where anything goes. The fresh air and "Conch Republic" attitude are enough to make your trip with your gal pals a true getaway. Stay right in the thick of things, just off Mallory Square or on one of the charming side streets in a rental. That Key West breeze will send you into an utter calm during the fall, even with your crazy girlfriends. Dine at Blue Heaven for sandy floors and plenty of clucking chicken pals walking around the premise.

Highlands, North Carolina

If you and your crew are more interested in a calm, cozy getaway this fall, Highlands is a great option. With hiking, scenic views, and plenty of modern amenities, this mountain town offers the perfect spot for some rest and relaxation. After stocking up with some wine and the fixings for a cheese plate, you're ready for quality time with your girlfriends. Stay at Old Edwards Inn and Spa for some arts, fitness, and spa treatments. This mountain refuge, located in the heart of downtown, delights with crackling fireplaces, inviting porches, and dining options galore. Begin your day at Mountain Fresh Grocery & Wine Market , where a homemade breakfast sandwich will fuel the day's adventure.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston is one of those Southern cities you have to visit— Southern Living readers didn't name it "The South's Best City" time and time again for nothing. It's full of great food, beautiful historic homes, and a lively atmosphere perfect for a girlfriend trip. Planning your journey in the fall ensures that you won't be stuck in summer's steamy heat as you're strolling down King Street and gawking over the gorgeous homes. Stay at Charleston Place or The Dewberry , a midcentury wonder in historic downtown, for impeccable service. There are almost too many places for delicious food and drinks to choose just one. You can't go wrong at the iconic Husk Restaurant for truly standout Southern dishes or My Three Sons for authentic soul food where the mac 'n cheese is renowned.

Dahlonega, Georgia

Head to the North Georgia mountains to enjoy some quality time with friends. Take a hike in Chattahoochee National Forest and see Brasstown Bald, Georgia's highest peak. Check out the area's orchards, including B.J. Reece Orchards in Ellijay and Mercier Orchards in Blairsville, and go apple picking. Or hop around the small towns of North Georgia and check out boutiques and cafes in charming downtown squares. There are also lots of wineries in the area, so you can join a wine tour or put together a personalized wine trail for you and your friends. Don't miss Montaluce Winery and Restaurant or Wolf Mountain Vineyards north of in Dahlonega .

Austin, Texas

Austin is known as an arts and culture hub in Texas, and it's full of innovative businesses , up-and-coming restaurants , and a thriving music scene. It is a more urban getaway for you and your girlfriends and completely worth it for the experience. It's one of those towns where you can hit the ground running if you have some pals up for anything. It will still be warm when you're visiting in the fall (this is Texas, after all), so be ready. We recommend staying near South Congress , which will provide plenty of coffee shops, boutiques, and restaurants to appease the crowd. You can also spring to stay at the newly renovated historic property, Commodore Perry Estate , which is stunning. Don't miss the food at either Perla's , Olamaie , or the iconic Matt's El Rancho (get the famous Bob Armstrong Dip!) while you're there.

Virginia's Shenandoah Valley

There are lots of charming small towns and bed-and-breakfasts in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley . Choose a home base along Virginia's stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway . Hot Springs is a great one; it's also home of The Omni Homestead Resort, where you can take in the scenery and enjoy some spa treatments too. (Don't skip a visit to the Lobby Bar for cocktails.) Grab your group and go for a drive along Skyline Drive , where there are lots of overlooks perfect for photo ops, or lace up your hiking boots and find a trailhead to embark on with your besties in the mountains. After a day of exploring, head to Devils Backbone Brewing Company for a brew . Along the way, there are also Roanoke, Lexington, and plenty of other places to explore.

Charlottesville, Virginia

Head to Charlottesville for a bonafide girls' wine weekend. Charlottesville has made its name a respected wine producer and a significant stop on the Monticello Wine Trail , which features many different wineries offering tastings and tours. Thomas Jefferson's vision of grape growing and winemaking inspired the wineries on the Monticello Wine Trail so that counts as learning a little history, too—right? Grab your girls and enjoy a weekend of wine and good conversation. In this college town , you'll find students, tourists, and locals mingling at hidden-gem restaurants or drinking pints of Bold Rock cider as they watch the sunset over the Blue Ridge Mountains .

Bay St. Louis, Mississippi

It's no secret that the farther west you travel along the Mississippi coast, the stronger you'll hear the call of New Orleans. Once you hit the waterfront in Old Town Bay St. Louis, you might as well be in the French Quarter. Many locals here have New Orleans roots, and this little 'burg is all about letting those good times roll. It's artsy, funky, and quirky yet still peaceful and relaxing. It's an unhurried, come-on-in attitude of a small Southern town : NOLA, meet Mayberry. You'll find Old Town Bay St. Louis, a walkable area full of local shops and eateries just off of Beach Boulevard. Spend an afternoon strolling through Old Town, browsing the beach boutiques and art galleries. Don't miss The French Potager , an antique store and flower shop, and the seafood at Thorny Oyster .

Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville is known as a girls' weekend staple, so take your group if you haven't been there together before. There's much more to this city than Broadway, and we recommend trying the more laid-back spots before venturing to the Vegas-esque strip. A dining spot with an outside area, Pinewood Social is outfitted with group games to help entertain you during your wait. The restaurant also boasts a large refurbished industrial-style dining room and a cool (adult) bowling alley. Get the Short Rib Mac-n-Cheese for everyone to share. Head to L.A. Jackson , a rooftop bar and restaurant at Thompson Nashville hotel, for after-dinner drinks and a great view of the city at night. Want a spot on Broadway? Try Acme Feed & Seed for a local's favorite atmosphere.

Charleston, West Virginia

If fall foliage is what you're after, you can't do much better than a visit to Charleston, West Virginia , which will put your and your buds in the middle of a landscape transforming into a vibrant autumn palette. Nature trails, performance venues, and lots of boutique shopping means that there's sure to be something to do for everyone in your group. Don't miss Elk City Records in the Elk City Historic District for vinyl (make sure to check their hours based on recent renovations), and stop into Appalachian Tea or Mea Cuppa Coffee Lounge for a sip afterwards. Cross the Elk River to explore downtown proper with its shops and breweries.

Bentonville, Arkansas

A trip to Bentonville is the best of all worlds. In addition to cultural draws like the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and their new downtown space The Momentary , you can take in the splendor of the colors changing across the forests of the Ozark Mountains. You can rent bikes to go mountain biking or find a trailhead to set out on a hike that will help you get even closer to the turning leaves (and the photo ops). Check out the locally-owned shops and restaurants downtown, and when you're finished, turn in for the night at the 21C Museum Hotel .

Frostburg, Maryland

Frostburg is perfect for those looking for a quiet mountain escape. Tucked amid an expanse of rolling green hills, you'll find a quaint historic downtown with plenty of dining options. Wander back in time as you explore the town's history museums, then hop on the 150-mile Great Allegheny Passage as it cuts through town for a gorgeous view of the changing seasons. Finally, rest up at the (also historic) Hotel Gunter .

Louisville, Kentucky

While there are plenty of urban charms to Louisville , the quiet moments speak most deeply to travelers in fall. Places like Cherokee Park (pictured) invite visitors to experience the changing leaves for themselves, while trips to downtown distilleries (like the appointent-only Prohibition Craft Spirits ) or short drives out to the region's other famed distilleries (like Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort) are great for groups. Find a distillery for a whiskey tasting and you'll learn that Kentucky Bourbon is famous for a reason. At this town along the Ohio River, there's never a shortage of things to do in fall.

Franklin, Tennessee

Vibrant fall foliage, charming small businesses, beautifully restored Victorian-era buildings—what more could you want for a fall getaway? You'll find it hard not to be charmed by fall in Franklin . Enjoy breakfast or lunch at local favorite Merridee's , then explore shopping outpost White's Mercantile . Immerse yourself in fall colors on the hiking trails in Timberland Park, or take the beautiful Natchez Trace Parkway to enjoy the scenery with fewer steps. When you're done for the day, retire at the Harpeth just a block from town square and indulge in one or two of the bar's 35 types of whiskey.

Just because it is a current business and government city, in no way means that it is boring and not worth a visit. Assuming the political tensions get solved, Moscow is a fascinating city you need to visit.

While lots of people can’t explain the nuances of Russian architecture, most can spot and appreciate it immediately. One of the best ways to see the historic sites is by taking a boat tour down the Moskva River that meanders through the city.

Overall, navigating the city isn’t difficult as there is phenomenal and cheap public transportation (roughly 30 rubles/35 cents per ride). You can also use a cheap Uber on the three ring roads that circle the city at various distances from the center.

Still wondering why you should visit this historic masterpiece of a city? Read on to see the top 25 things you need to see in Moscow.

St. Basils Cathedral

Saint Basil's Cathedral in Moscow Russia.

Probably the most famous of the Red Square attractions is St. Basil’s Cathedral. I don’t know if the legend is true or not, but supposedly Tsar Ivan IV poked the eyes of the architect out after completing it so nothing as pretty could be made again. What an awful boss!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

Machines in Museum of Soviet arcade machines

This is one of the most unique things to do in Moscow. If you know that many American video games paint the Russians as the bad guys, then it’s probably not surprising to learn that you can find an entirely different variety of video games in Russia. This isn’t a recent phenomenon; even historically the video games were different. If you are a video game buff then this stop is for you!

Main Church of the Armed Forces in Park Patriot near Kubinka

Main Church of the Armed Forces in Park Patriot

This church attempts to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ as well as Russian military leader. Yes, it’s an awkward amalgamation. It caused quite a controversy when there were plans to create murals of Vladimir Putin and Joseph Stalin to go along with the ones of Jesus Christ (those plans were scrapped).

Bunker 42 (Cold War Museum)

Meeting room in Bunker 42 Museum of the Cold War - military history museum.

Tunnel at Bunker-42, anti-nuclear underground facility built in 1956 as command post of strategic nuclear forces of Soviet Union.

Americans weren’t the only ones afraid during the Cold War! You can now discover the most secret and secure Bunker of the USSR, Bunker 42. Also known as the Cold War Museum . This former military communication center is now a museum. I recommend this tour that will take you on a private two hour visit of Bunker 42.

Tank Excursion and Bazooka Shooting in Moscow

This cathedral is located in Zaryadye Park (adjacent to Red Square). It is also on the Moskva River. The Cathedral of the icon of the Mother of God “Sign” previously was a monastery.

Komsomolskaya Metro station

Komsomolskaya Metro station in Moscow.

So many of the metro stations are breathtaking works of art. The idea was to create something beautiful that all the regular people could enjoy, or if you are more cynical you could say it was to attempt to show off how well they were doing.

The Round houses at Dovzhenko Stree t

The Round houses at Dovzhenko Street Moscow

The Round houses at Dovzhenko Street look super cool and futuristic, except like many communist projects didn’t actually work that well. They were supposed to be something new and different from the standard “Soviet Blocks.”

There are a number of problems with this design. Supposedly the acoustics are awful making the apartments perpetually noisy. The inner circle becomes a wind chamber even when it’s not that windy. My favorite weakness is that the trapezoid shape of apartments is hard to decorate and even harder to do maintenance on.

Izmailovo District and Izmailovo Kremlin

Izmailovo Kremlin In The Center Of

This area has to be one of the coolest places to visit in Moscow. It features a park in the middle of Moscow that is over 3x the size of New York City’s Central Park. The Kremlin in Izmailovo is a complex located in the Eastern Administrative District of Moscow that is known as the center of culture and entertainment. The wooden buildings are in Russian architecture of the XVI-XVII centuries (not original).

Tretyakov Gallery

retyakov State Gallery In Moscow

For those that appreciate fine art this is where you have to go. The State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow Russia is the best collection of Russian fine art in the world. The museum previously hosted worldwide chess tournaments (I can’t help be think of the Queen’s Gambit).

Book your tickets in advance here. Tickets cost about $13 per person.

Kolomenskoe Estate

Kolomenskoe Estate in Moscow Russia

This reconstruction of a former royal estate is just a few miles southeast of the Moscow city center. Supposedly really detailed historical plans survived, so the reconstruction and current museum is incredibly authentic. It was completed in 2010.

Old buildings of Arbat

Old buildings of Arbat Moscow Russia

Arbat is an old street, and was previously the “nicest place to live in Moscow. Even though it fell into disrepair, it’s location, it’s historical buildings, and the fact that it is a pedestrian street are quickly making it a top place to live again.

The Melnikov House

Famous house of architect Melnikov on Arbat street in Moscow Russia

Located on Arbat street, the Famous house of architect Melnikov designed this house (and Lenin’s sarcophagus). Melnikov designed it at a time when private ownership was outlawed, but got around this restriction by saying it was an experimental design to maximize space. Even though others weren’t built, he was able to keep it.

The New Maiden Convent

The New Maiden Convent, built was built to resemble a mini-Kremlin. It stands out to me because this “convent” was the place where women who were no longer welcome in the royal court were banished to.

Monument to the Conquerors of Space at the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics in the Cosmopark

Monument to the Conquerors of Space at the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics in the Cosmopark.

The Americans may have made it to the moon first, but the Russian cosmonauts were first in a number of other achievements. This gigantic obelisk pays homage to their accomplishments.

This group of seven skyscrapers are called the Seven Sisters. They were all made in the Stalinist style, and one was previously the tallest building in Europe. If you want to tour them all while learning about their history book here .

Cathedral of Christ the Savior

The Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow

It’s ironic that a country that was so anti-religion for so long has so many great churches. The Cathedral for Christ the Savior was made to thank Jesus for saving Russia. If you are interested in visiting this and so many other cathedrals in Moscow I recommend this tour that will take you to The Cathedral of Christ the Savior many other popular churches in Moscow.

Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in Red Square Moscow

This church on Red Square is reconstruction of what was previously there but ordered to be destroy by Joseph Stalin. It is a travesty thinking of all the beautiful things that Stalin destroyed to attempt to implement his vision.

Zaryade Park

glass dome in Zaryadye Park in Moscow

Zaryadye Park is one of the main tourist attractions in Moscow. It is located directly next to the Kremlin, and offers truly amazing views. It is also famous for its “floating bridge” and the fact that there are so many unique features underneath it.

Church of Sign of Blessed Virgin in Dubrovitsy Znamenskaya

Church of Sign of Blessed Virgin in Dubrovitsy Znamenskaya church

The Church of the Theotokos of the Sign (Dubrovitsy), or The Church of the Holy Sign of the Mother of God is located in a village amed Dubrovitsy about 20 miles south of Moscow. It is another Russian Orthodox church, but what makes this one unique is that we aren’t 100% sure who made it, or why is has a style that is completely different than other churches of the time.

The Church of Nicholas The Wonderworker

The Church of Nicholas The Wonderworker on Bersenevka in Moscow.

I love the unique style of the Russian Orthodox churches in Moscow. The golden onion domes stand out across the globe. This church dates back to 1657, though it has been partially destroyed a few times since then.

Moscow University

Moscow University in Russia

Moscow University is one of the Seven Sisters that are the “Stalin Skyscrapers.” Previously it was the tallest building in Europe. Though it has lost that title, it is still the tallest “educational building” in the world.

So what do you think? Next trip to Moscow?

Zaryadie Park is just a 10-minute walk from St. Basil’s Cathedral, so it’s easy to include in your itinerary if you’re going to visit Moscow in 2 days. Visit the Cathedral of Christ the Savior

This impressive Moscow Cathedral is the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is a must see if you visit Moscow in 2 days and clearly one of the things to do in Moscow. The Cathedral of Christ the Savior was first built in 1883 in memory of Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s Grand Army. Then in 1931 Stalin ordered its destruction. It was then rebuilt again (identically) only in 2000.

  • Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 15. At the foot of the Kropotkinskaya metro station.
  • Opening hours . Daily: 10: 00-17: 00, except Monday: 13: 00-17: 00
  • Free entry (some closing restrictions, for example a short)

Good to know! In orthodox religious places, one must avoid excessively uncovered clothing. Women should cover their heads. After visiting the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you can explore Bolotny Island and Gorky Park. This is one of the routes our guide to Moscow.

Cathedral of Christ the Savior

The old Krasny Oktyabr factory: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow

If you cross the Moskva River by a pedestrian bridge which is located just in front of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you will enjoy a beautiful view of the city and at the same time you can discover Balchug Island. Furthermore, if you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, you can include this island in your itinerary between the cathedral and Gorky park. Here is the old confectionery factory Krasny Oktyabr, which has gradually turned into a fashionable micro-district. There are then some elements of street art, cafes and restaurants and some Moscow bohemian side. At the end of the island you can see a gigantic 98-meter-high monument dedicated to the Russian reforming tsar Pierre The Great.

Good to know! You can find on this island are the trendiest nightclubs in Moscow. On weekends, there are taxi caps after midnight so there are so many people. On the other hand, if you go there in winter and during the day, the island is quite empty and less interesting to see.

Gorky Park is one of the TOP places to visit in Moscow, because it allows you to better understand the life of the locals and their rhythm. In fact, it’s a huge entertainment park. For example, in winter there is a giant ice rink and in summer – free dance or yoga lessons, sandy beaches for playing volleyball, an outdoor cinema. So, like the locals, have a Stakantchik (ice cream or cooked corn), and enjoy the atmosphere of the place: that’s one of the interesting things to do in Moscow to discover the city.

  • Where? Krymsky Val 9. 20 minutes’ walk from Krasny Oktyabr, along the quays.

Sparrow Hill and Moscow State University

The Sparrow Hill, Vorobiovy Gori in Russian, is the highest point in Moscow. It is rather known to Russians, but less to travelers. A nice view on Moscow opens from the hill, and in particular on the Luzhniki Stadium. In addition, on the hill itself is the Moscow State University: an impressive skyscraper from the Soviet era.

  • How to get there? By bus T7 (35 min) from Oktyaborskaya station, near Gorki Park. By metro (Vorobiovy Gorki station) + climb the hill on foot. On foot along the Moskva along the Gorky Park (1h30) + climb in funiculars.

Good to know! It is possible to cross the Moskva river by funicular. We actually tested it and it was pretty cool! That is one of our favorite things to do in Moscow!

What to do in Moscow

What to do in Moscow in 3 days?

If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days, it would be interesting to dive into the Soviet era which strongly marked the country and the city. After the Bolshevik Revolution, the capital was transferred from Saint Petersburg to Moscow, in order to mark the change of power. Moscow then became the world showcase for communist ideology. Here are the best things to do in Moscow for 3-day-trip!

VDNKh, visit Moscow of the Soviet era

VDNKh is a large exhibition center in the north of Moscow, where there are still several striking witnesses of the USSR. The most interesting are the Museum of Cosmonauts and the Statue of the Worker and the Kolkhozian , which will certainly impress you with its size!

Visit

GULAG History Museum

The explanations of the museum are very well done. We really have the feeling of going back in time. If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days and you are interested in history and this subject in particular, I recommend this museum. Visit the GULAG History Museum is one of the most interesting things to do in Moscow.

Discover the Patriarche Pounds district

It’s a nice neighborhood in Moscow where you can come across rather affluent locals, but not necessarily very bling-bling. Take a walk in this area is really a cool thing to do in Moscow! In addition, the Ponds of Patriarch is one of the places of Bulgakov’s novel “Master and Margarita”. As this is an interesting area to see, we have included it in a walking tour of Moscow. The route ends at the Moscow Kremlin, which is very convenient, because you will be able to visit Moscow in 3 days by optimizing your trips.

What to visit in Moscow in 4 days: TOP things to do in Moscow in 4 days

If you want to visit Moscow in 3 days, you will already see a lot of things. On the other hand, if you stay one more day, you have plenty to do! The Novodevichy Convent, the Tchistie Proudy district and the Izmaylovo Kremlin are very good candidates for you, if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days.

Visiting Novodevichy Convent in Moscow

The Novodevichy Convent is one of the most brilliant examples of Russian architecture, according to UNESCO. This beautiful complex was built in 1524 and today consists of the convent, but also of a cemetery whose status could be compared to that of Père-Lachaise in Paris. Visiting Novodevichy Convent is one of the great things to do in Moscow, if you want to go a little bit outside of the center!

What to see in Moscow in one day

Discovering Tchistye Proudy district

It’s one of the most popular areas of Moscow, with many cafes, restaurants and bars nearby. It is therefore a place to discover if you want to visit Moscow in 4 days. It is just as pleasant for a stroll as for the discovery of local life. For example, in winter the pond turns into an ice rink.

Visiting the Izmaylovo Kremlin, one of the coolest things to do in Moscow!

The Izmaylovo Kremlin is more of a tourist than a historic place. On the other hand, it is a pretty impressive place to discover, especially on weekends. Inside the Kremlin, there is a flea market where you can find a little bit of everything, but mostly good souvenirs to bring from Moscow. For example, chapka, traditional Russian scarves or matryoshka (Russian dolls). Add the Kremlin and the Izmaïlovo market to your itinerary if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days, because it is a nice and very colorful place! Visiting the Izmailovo Kremlin is one of the things to do in Moscow, if you want to put colors in your Instagram account! 😉

Art lovers will be delighted to discover the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, while others will prefer to stroll along Arbat Street, see the buildings of Moskva-City or visit Bunker 42.

Admiring Russian art at Tretyakov Gallery

Founded in 1856 by an industrialist and great lover of art, the gallery has grown over the decades, and then bequeathed to the state. Walking on Arbat Street

All Russians know Rue Arbat. So, walking on Arbat street is one of the things to do in Moscow. However, after the years, little by little it became very touristy. This is a pedestrian street only. There are souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes there, but it is no longer the most authentic neighborhood in the city.

Seeing the buildings of Moskva-City (Moscow City)

Moskva-City is Moscow’s business center, much like Paris’s Defense district. The skyscrapers of Moskva-City are among the tallest in Europe: 373 meters high! Very nice place to see at dusk.

Good to know! You can admire a nice view of Moscow City from the docks of Tarasa Shevchenko. It’s especially beautiful in the evening with all the lights on.

Bunker 42, one of the most unusual things to do in Moscow

Bunker 42 is a secret military complex which was to be used by the Soviets in the event of a nuclear attack: a space of 7000 m² 65 meters underground!

  • Where? 5 Kotelnitcheski Lane, 11.

What to visit in Moscow in 6 days or more?

There are still so many places to see, because Moscow is a big megalopolis and there is always something exciting to do there. For example: the ancient Kolomenskoye village or the WINZAVOD contemporary art center .

If you are interested in history and want to see Russian cities on a rather “human scale”, it would certainly be interesting for you to discover the cities of the Golden Ring . For example, it is very easy to get to Sergey Posad from Moscow (less than 2 hours in train). Visiting the Golden Ring is one of the best things to do in Moscow if you are staying more than a 5-6 days.

There are still plenty of places to see in Moscow, however I did my best to list here the best things to do in Moscow, what to see in Moscow in one day, but also in 2, 3, 4 or 5 days in Moscow!

Moscow offers tourists many great sights to see, but if you ask locals, they will tell you that Moscow is not all there is to Russia, so it’s worth getting away sometimes. Without exploring further, you miss something of the Russian unique character. If you wonder what to visit near Moscow, we recommend you 10 places where a tourist can go for a refreshing recreation, new impressions, and acquaintance with Russian history and culture.

01 Sergiyev Posad

Sergiyev Posad is one of the most beautiful towns located around Moscow. It’s not only famous for its monastery, the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, but also for the fact that it’s the only town in the Moscow Region that is included in the Golden Ring of Russian cities. Its cities and towns influenced the formation of the Russian Orthodox Church. But the main thing which one should visit Sergiyev Posad is the Lavra for sure. You may spend there all day, walking around and enjoying the sense of its power and strength. You absolutely have to buy some honey cakes as souvenirs for friends and feed Lavra’s pigeons when entering the monastery. Besides, you may visit Sergiyev Posad State History and Art Museum-Reserve, which has quite an impressive collection, take a look at the displays in the National Museum of Toys, and taste truly Russian food in local cafes and restaurants.

You can reach Sergiyev Posad by suburban electric train, by bus, or by car. The electric train departs from the Yaroslavsky rain terminal every thirty minutes, and the trip lasts for an hour and a half. You may take a bus near the ‘VDNKh’ metro station, and you’ll be in Sergiyev Posad in an hour and a half at least and in two hours at most. Your car will take you there in an hour and a half at most, too. You should drive the Yaroslavskoye highway.

If you want to look at a city that combines hi-tech and historical past, you should absolutely visit Kolomna. It is one of the most famous ancient cities in Russia, a beautiful port on the Oka River. Kolomna has its own Kremlin, which is made of red brick, like the Moscow Kremlin. Inside it, you may find many monasteries and churches, including the one in which Dmitry of the Don, Prince of Moscow, and Grand Prince of Vladimir, had his wedding to the Grand Duchess of Muscovy Eudoxia of Moscow. There is still a reserved residential area which is called Posad, right in the Kremlin territory. The buildings date back to merchants’ times. There are some interesting churches, too. In 2006, the Kolomna Speed Skating Center, known as the Kometa Ice Rink, was opened. Its futuristic look contrast the picturesque views of the ancient Kolomna Kremlin and its beautiful churches.

The best way to reach Kolomna is an electric train that departs from the Kazansky rail terminal. The trip lasts for two and a half, or one hour and forty minutes by the Ryazansky express. You can also choose a bus from the Vykhino metro station (1.4 to 4 hrs due to traffic jams) or a car.

More than two thousand memorable things are stored in the museum, including some monuments of military honor, architectural objects dated back to the 19th and 20th centuries, and fortification facilities. Besides, there is also an exhibition dedicated to the famous novel ‘War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy, who visited Borodino in person and described this battle in his book. Melikhovo is considered one of the most important museums dedicated to Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, one of the brightest Russian writers and playwrights. Chekhov had been living in Melikhovo from March 1892 until August 1899 with his parents and close relatives. Melikhovo is where he wrote his plays “Uncle Vanya” and “The Seagull.” He sold this manor before going to the Crimea, and it became vague after the revolution. But in 1939, it was decided to establish a museum based on Chekhov’s place of living. Anton Chekhov’s sister Maria and his nephew initiated the process, and the museum opened its doors in 1941. Now Melikhovo shows the path of Chekhov not only as a writer but as a doctor and public figure as well. Some paintings of famous artists such as Isaac Levitan and Vasily Polenov, who were Chekhov’s friends, are being stored. It’s a nice place to visit to learn more about Chekov’s life and work.

Abramtsevo used to be visited by writers Ivan Turgenev and Nikolay Gogol, poet Fyodor Tyutchev, and such artists as Isaac Levitan, Vasily Polenov, and Mikhail Vrubel, and by the great Russian singer Fyodor Shalyapin as well. 08 Yasnaya Polyana

Yasnaya Polyana is known as a place of residence of the famous Russian writer Leo Tolstoy. He was born there, wrote his novels ‘War and Peace’ and ‘Anna Karenina,’ died and is buried. He’d been living in this manor for fifty years. Yasnaya Polyana is located in the Tula Region, 200 km from Moscow to the south. This manor consists of many interesting and significant objects. For example, the interior of the main house where Tolstoy lived is being kept like it was in 1910 — it was the last year for the writer. All things in the house are considered to be personal belongings of Tolstoy and his family. Besides the main house, the Yasnaya Polyana ensemble includes the so-called Volkonsky house — the house of Tolstoy’s grandfather, the Kuzminskiye wing, which is a part of the oldest house where Tolstoy was born, now non-existent, the birch alley made by Sofya Andreevna, Leo Tolstoy’s wife, stable, ponds, and favorite Tolstoy’s bench. Leo Tolstoy’s tomb is located close to the ravine's edge — it’s where he wanted to be buried.

The whole travel time to Yasnaya Polyana is about 4 hrs as long as it’s located near Tula. It can be reached by train, or by car. First, you should go to Tula by train from the Kursky rail terminal or by bus from the Tsaritsyno, Domodedovskaya, Prazhskaya, or Ulitsa Akademika Yangelya metro stations, and then change to bus, or by trolley bus for Yasnaya Polyana.

09 Polotnyany Zavod

This place which title can be translated into Russian as ‘linen factory,’ is known for its connection to the Goncharov family, from which Natalia Goncharova, Alexander Pushkin’s wife, originated. The real linen factory was built on the bank of the Sukhodrev River in the Kaluga Region in 1718 by Peter the Great order. Goncharov, Natalia’s great grandfather, was one of the companions who participated in the factory’s development. Every companion built his own manor close to the factory’s building, and even for those times, it was quite an uncommon situation. Polotnyany Zavod was visited by the empress Catherine the Great, the Field Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov, and Nikolay Vasilievich Gogol. In 1999, when everybody celebrated the bicentennial of Alexander Pushkin, Polotnyany Zavod was made a museum, and now it welcomes many guests who come to see dramatized excursions and to learn more about Pushkin times. The poet himself visited this place two times, in 1830 and 1834. Polotnyany Zavod has the most picturesque panoramic view in the Kaluga Region.

To go to Polotnyany Zavod, you should take a bus from the bus station near the Tyoply Stan metro station, and go to Kondorovo. It takes a little more than three hours.

Tarus is just another little town in Kaluga Region, which is considered to be typical Russian. It’s located on the left bank of the Oka River and has really magnificent views. It feels like time stands still there. Tarusa managed to preserve the best from the past, and even now, it consists mostly of one-storeyed houses made of wood or stone. They say it’s because Tarusa residents declined railroad construction. This town became popular among Russian intellectuals at the beginning of the 20th century when famous artist Vasily Polenov discovered it and told about Tarusa to anyone in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Tarusa is known to be a hometown for Russian writer Marina Tsvetaeva, whose family spent summertime there. Tsvetaeva museum is a museum every guest of Tarusa should visit for sure. Besides, Konstantin Paustovsky, another famous Russian writer, lived there till his death and was buried in Tarusa. The absolutely must-do in Tarusa is to walk along the embankment of the Oka River.

The best way to reach Tarusa is by direct bus which departs from the bus station near the ‘Tyoply Stan’ metro station. Travel time is about two hours.

25 Tips for a Perfect Girlfriend’s Getaway in Boston

Need a little break from the every day? Turns out, a girlfriends’ getaway in Boston fits the bill perfectly.

In the past 10 years, I can count the number of times I’ve been away with just me and the girls and it isn’t much. Being a mother, running a business, travel commitments and well, just life, tends to have that effect.

So when one of my best girlfriends reached out to invite me to Boston for a few days, I resisted the urge to feel guilty about leaving the kiddos and business in Charles’ highly capable hands, and I jumped at the chance.

And you know what? They did just fine without me, and I had a wonderful time in one of North America’s coolest and most historic cities.

Here are a few of our favorite things we found to do, see, and eat (and where we stayed) during our girls getaway in Boston.

Tip! If you’re planning to take in a lot of activities and sights in Boston, you can save some $$ with the Boston CityPASS .

What to do on a girlfriend’s getaway in Boston

Honestly, I had a heck of a time planning our time in Boston. There’s just so very much to see and do that I ended up with over 40 items on my must see list. Unfortunately, with only four days in town, that just wasn’t going to cut it, so we honed our list down to the absolute must dos.

Boston Duck tour

OK, OK, I know Duck tours are insanely touristy, and probably not what you expected from an independent travel blog. They may be touristy, but they’re also a heap of fun, especially if you’re with a group of girls who are willing to have a blast with the campy atmosphere.

The Duck serves as an excellent, whirlwind tour of downtown Boston’s main attractions. In between our driver’s cheeky jokes and radio jock demeanor, I actually learned a lot about Boston’s history. I’d recommend taking a Duck tour at the very beginning of your weekend to help you quickly get the lay of the land.

We took the last Duck Tour of the day, and by the time we finished, we had spectacular sunset views on the water on the Charles River.

Walk the Freedom Trail

If there are any history lovers in your group, make sure you walk the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile, red-lined route that takes in many landmarks related to the rich history of the American Revolution. You can easily grab a map and walk the route by yourself, or take one of the many tours available.

Viator has a great selection of Boston tours , including Freedom Trail walking tours.

Shop Back Bay

Up for some serious retail therapy? Then check out upscale Back Bay.

Start at Copley Place shopping center, which is packed with designer shops like Christian Dior and Louis Vuitton, then move on to Prudential Center, at the base of the Prudential tower.

Make sure to take time to browse the even more upscale Newbury Street, which is a lovely stroll among historic brownstones and leafy trees.

Take a Boston Harbor tour

I highly recommend getting out on historic Boston Harbour. You’ll be greeted by a stunning view of downtown, and it’s a lovely chance to get out of the bustle of the city.

Money saving tip

Grab a Boston CityPASS  before you go. It includes admission to New England Aquarium, the Museum of Science, the Skywalk Observatory, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston OR Boston Harbor Cruises.

Click here to see Boston CityPASS savings .

Boston Public Library

The Boston public library is absolutely, unequivocally, stunning.

This is just a quick pic taken with my smartphone, and it definitely doesn’t do the library justice. Just go. It’s a book lover’s heaven.

Go to Harvard

Come on, you know you’ve always wanted to tell your parents that you’re going to Harvard. Here’s your chance.

It’s worth the visit just to enjoy the leafy Harvard campus, but there’s also bustling Harvard Square nearby, which is full of quirky little shops and restaurants.

Visit the Boston Common

The Boston Common, smack in the middle of downtown Boston, is America’s oldest public park. It’s a lovely stroll, and makes a great place to start a Freedom Trail walk.

If you’re a fan of Sam Malone and the Cheers gang, then a stop by the Cheers bar location is an absolute must! It’s on Beacon Hill, near the Boston Common.

Explore Boston’s unique neighborhoods

Boston has many iconic neighborhoods than are worth a visit, from downtown to strolling through the North End.

Little Italy is well worth your time, with cute shops, and outstanding bakeries and restaurants. In fact, we loved little Italy so much that we ate here three of the four evenings of our stay.

Tip – Press the easy button

If you want a little guidance checking out Boston, browse through Viator’s Boston tours . They have dozens of tours, one of which is probably perfect for you.

Click here now to see Viator’s Boston tours .

Where to eat

It’s a tough job, but us girls were happy to check out some of Boston’s great restaurants and report back to you. Turns out, there’s a heck of a lot of great food in Boston!

Brunch and Lunch

We did some research before we visited, and found some of Boston’s best brunch spots. Turns out, the reviews were right, and these places were all fantastic.

Kirkland Tap & Trotter

We stopped at the The Kirkland Tap & Trotter on our way from downtown to Harvard, and it was well worth the detour. The Kirkland Tap & Trotter has a stylish rustic decor, with plenty of craft beer on tap, and a menu by chef Tony Maws.

I tried the brioche french toast fruit compote with Vermont maple syrup (delicious), and my friend tried a side of the grilled pork belly. She said it was probably going to take a decade off her life, but it was well worth it.

Tip! Make sure you grab a side of the grilled avocado, it was something new to me and tasty!

OAK Long Bar + Kitchen

The first thing you can’t help but notice about OAK Long Bar + Kitchen is the stunning setting inside the elegant Fairmont Copley Plaza.

We stopped here as a start to our shopping along Black Bay, and I’m so glad we did. They offer a farm to table menu, and have a focus on signature cocktails.

It’s relaxed elegance at its best. I never felt out of place in my casual sandals and shorts, and the food was fantastic.

I had the pancakes with pecans and fresh raspberries, and they were absolutely perfect. The next time I’m in Boston, this is a must-do stop.

Savin Hill Diner

If you’re in the Savin Hill or Dorchester areas of Boston, be sure to check out the neighborhood McKenna’s Cafe. It was jam-packed on the morning we went, and prices were affordable, and the food was good.

Tip! Be sure to grab an iced coffee to go. The cup was as big as my head and the coffee was delicious. Get the original; we didn’t like the flavored versions as much.

Oh, Little Italy! I think it says something that we loved the food here so much that we ate here three nights during our stay.

Tip! When you’re in Little Italy, make sure you stop by Mike’s Pastry for authentic, Italian pastry. We stopped by two nights, and everything was delicious, but the tiramisu was out of this world incredible.

 Where to stay

There’s no getting away from it: Boston hotels are pricey. To cut the cost, we decided to stay a little ways fromdowntown, but within an easy transit commute.

Hotel AC Boston North

A short search later landed us at the uber-stylish Hotel AC Boston North . It’s an easy, 20 minute, commute on the Orange Line to downtown.

This is a gorgeous hotel, with a swank, stylish lounge and breakfast area downstairs.

The rooms are beautifully spacious, clean and modern, and there’s an onsite pool and gym.

My only real complaint was that the front desk had a bit of trouble with my wake up call. One morning, they called a day early at 3:30 am. I went to the front desk that night to sort out a call for the next morning at 3:30 am, which never came. Luckily, my smartphone alarm was a bit more reliable.

Airbnb in Boston

My first night in Boston, I got in after midnight, so I crashed the first night with my girlfriend in a private room in an Airbnb in Boston’s cool Savin Hill neighborhood. It was a lovely room in a second floor unit in a private home, and hosted by Rebecca, who was helpful and friendly. This would be a great stay for a solo female traveler in Savin Hill.

Getting around

I found Boston’s public transit, nicknamed the T, to be fantastic. We used buses and the subway line, and found that they ran on time for us. The schedules were also very reasonable. It’s ful name is Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA, or the T for short).

There are dispensing machines in all T stations, where I got a CharlieCard, with a magnetic strip. The card is free (thanks, Boston!), and can be reloaded at any T station machine. You can get a day pass, a week pass, or just load the card with whatever dollar value you want. Machines take cash, debit cards, and credit cards.

Tip! If you’re in Boston for more than a day or so, or plan on taking a lot of trips, consider getting a weekly pass. I was there for four days, and didn’t get a weekly pass. Paying for individual trips ended up costing me about $10 more for fares than I would have if I’d bought the weekly pass.

It’s one of those places you don’t think of right away when you’re looking for a little holiday, but is so jam-packed with history and things to do once you get there. We’ll have to make a point of trying Mike’s Pastry next time we go!

Once in a while a gal just needs to get away and hunker down with her girlfriends. Maybe you’re celebrating a special event or milestone. Or, you simply want to continue an annual tradition of bonding with your besties…

Whatever your agenda, someplace in Indiana offers exactly what you’re looking for. Is your group active and looking for outdoor adventure? Are you more interested in museums and antiquing? Are there foodies in your crowd who would rather taste wine and eat at offbeat restaurants? It’s all right here.

A good place to start your planning might be Richmond and Wayne County, where several “Just Us Girls” packages await your selection. “The Artful Getaway,” for example includes staying at the Artist’s Retreat Guest House and learning from an artisan how to make earrings with the materials you’ll need included. With “DIY Flowers, Friends and Fun” you’ll stay at the Seldom Scene Meadow Bed and Breakfast while you make a succulent plant living wreath or miniature fairy garden.

Good-News-Vintage

And that’s just the beginning. Other packages will have you hiking and biking, sleeping in mansions, antiquing, shopping and tasting wine. You’ll also receive a gift pouch with free goodies and discounts at the stores where you’re likely to shop.

“The Greater Richmond area is the perfect girlfriends’ getaway for those who seek big city character without the crowds,” said Nancy Sartain, leisure marketing director at the Richmond-Wayne County Convention and Tourism Bureau. “Women find our hub to be historic, quaint, artsy, friendly, fun and affordable.”

Noblesville resident Victoria Reinhold recently spent a few days in Richmond with some of her girlfriends. “We rented the Gennett Mansion Guest House and it was perfect for our group. We loved catching up with each other, laughing, and renewing our friendship bond,” Victoria said. “While we ventured out and took in the Richmond sites, we also really enjoyed just being together… and that’s what makes girlfriends’ getaways so special.”

Headed north? Several options will fill the bill. In Chesterton shop for textile art at Three Moons Fiberworks and work by local artists at the Chesterton Art Center . Classes are available at both places if your group is so inclined. You can also join a workshop at Chelle’s Boutique and Garage , and shopping is good here, too – from women’s and children’s clothing to shoes, housewares and gifts.

Take something home for the kids from the imaginative collection at Chesterton Toys or treat yourselves to a treasure at O’Gara and Wilson Antiquarian Booksellers . The Coffee Creek Conservancy is the place to go for hiking and bird-watching. Then when it’s time to recover, head for Serenity Salon and Spa .

Wrap up the day with a glass of suds at the 219 Taproom , or Hunter’s Brewing , where pub food on the menu includes vegan options. Another good dining option is Abbiocco Italian Cuisine which also features the Luna Rooftop Bar . For lunch, try the Red Cup Café for deli sandwiches (gluten- free, if you like) and organic salads. Running Vines Winery offers pizza and sharable plates to go with your wine-tasting.

In nearby Valparaiso you and your girls can hit the links at Creekside and Forest Park golf courses, explore the 300-acre Gabis Arboretum , visit the Brauer Museum of Art and take in a performance at the Memorial Opera House and Chicago Street Theatre . And of course, there’s fantastic downtown shopping and dining.

While you’re in the area, your tour along the South Shore Winery Trail can be organized by the South Shore Brew Bus so that everyone can sip and nobody has to drive.

Just south of Valparaiso, in Wheatfield, check out the Still Point Retreat , a secluded whole-home rental that includes a 1,500-square- foot barn/workshop that would be ideal for arts and crafts workshops.

When it’s dinnertime check out the Industrial Revolution Eatery and Grille in Valparaiso, a themed restau- rant that honors the nation’s innova- tors with dishes such as the Edison Burger, Patrick Henry’s Freedom Chili and Madame C.J. Walker’s Curly Mac. And be sure and plan your Valpo trip around some of their many fun events taking place throughout the year.

Also along the state’s northern tier is Michigan City , a perfect place to hit the beach. “So many who live in or visit Indiana do not realize the magnificent lakeshore we have here in Northwest Indiana,” said Katie Eaton,” president of the Michigan City Chamber of Commerce and a lifelong resident. “We invite everyone to experience this beauty and discover an amazing beachfront in Michigan City.” While you’re outside, rent kayaks, take a boat cruise on Lake Michigan or visit Indiana Dunes National Park , one of the newest in the National Park System, for trails and hiking.

If you’re here in June, don’t miss the spectacular Singing Sands sand-sculpture event . North Star Properties offers a range of rental properties in northern Indiana, from condos to cottages steps away from Lake Michigan. At 4411 Inn and Suites you’re also close to the lake in two- and three-bedroom suites to accommodate your whole gang.

If you’d rather try your luck at the tables, however, consider staying at the Blue Chip Casino Hotel and Spa . While some of you have massages and facials, others can hang out by the slots. Or bunk in at the Brewery Lodge and Supper Club and enjoy a few hours at the Hideaway Esthetics Spa . Hermanas Harmony Spa is another option.

Beyond-the-Vine-wine-tours-Lafayette

History buffs won’t want to miss the Old Lighthouse Museum or a tour of the Barker Mansion , and art-lovers will enjoy the Lubeznik Center for the Arts , where admission is free and exhibits change every few months. If you’ve come for peace and quiet, a stroll through the Friendship Botanical Gardens is in order.

Farther east is Shipshewana, where the big draw is immersing yourself in Amish culture. Plan to stay in the cozy rooms at Highfield Manor Bed & Breakfast , an Amish farmhouse where you’ll be treated the next morning with a homemade breakfast that features seasonal produce and locally sourced meats.

For shopping there’s Davis Mercantile , with its four floors of 21 stores that offer everything you can imagine from clothing and home décor to candy and other delights. For more shopping in one spot, the Big Red Barn is home to shops that also carry a wide variety of products, many of them made by local Amish artisans. The Shipshewana Visitors Center will provide a map to an “Off the Beaten Trail” route that will guide you deep into Amish culture and small shops where artisans sell their wares.

Madison-Indiana-Girlfriends-Getaway

While you’re shopping, stop for lunch at Millie’s Market Café inside the Davis Mercantile. At dinnertime, however, Destination 814 is the place for made-from- scratch dinners and a bourbon bar or maybe you’d prefer dinner and a show at the Blue Gate Theatre .

Since food and drinks are always an important part of a girls’ trip, Kosciusko County has created three Sip & Savor Passports : a Breakfast Trail , Taco Trail , and Sipping Trail to provide you with a fun guide to the best restaurants in the area, many of which offer exclusive discounts to passholders.

Of course, shopping is typically an essential component when it comes to girlfriends getaways, so the ladies will be thrilled to know the Vera Bradley Annual Outlet Sale is back for 2023. This iconic sale will be held June 14-16 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne.

In Noble County , plan a trip around the Annie Oakley Perfumery where you can tour the factory and create your own personal fragrance at their world- class organic mixing bar. Stay at the nearby historic Kimmell House Inn Bed & Breakfast , situated on 12 country acres.

Little-Hill-Flower-Farm-Vincennes

In Lafayette-West Lafayette, be sure and include a Beyond the Vines tour as part of your getaway. This tour company offers full-day winery excursions starting in Lafayette. Round out your stay here with great shopping and dinner at one of their top restaurants, including Bistro 501 , an upmarket spot serving French-influenced cuisine.

And in Wabash, your whole group can stay at The Sanctuary , a renovated 1903 Gothic style church that can accommodate overnight groups of up to 16 people.

Monroe , Brown and Bartholomew counties in the southern part of the state are also tailor-made for a gaggle of girlfriends. Any one will fill your bill, but they’re close enough together to sample all three. Bloomington is the home of Indiana University with all it has to offer, and shopping abounds around downtown’s Courthouse Square , with antiquing just a few blocks away. Booking rooms at Grant Street Inn will put you within walking distance to both the campus and the city, and its charm, porches, and one-of-a-kind rooms have been welcoming girlfriends’ getaways for years.

Raspberry-Ridge-Moondance

For a more rustic experience, visit Brown County , where bunking in at the Abe Martin Lodge in Brown County State Park will put you close to hiking trails and nature studies. Or check out Moondance Vacation Homes or Hills O’Brown Vacation Rentals , where you can host your small or large group in log cabins and guest cottages located throughout the entire area. They both specialize in vacation rentals, so they make it easy to just unpack and unwind. Their rentals include everything you need, like linens, towels, kitchens, and everything in between.

In Morgan county , spend a weekend enjoying wineries, a lavender farm, lots of live music, and more. For extra fun, plan a dinner at the funky Zydeco’s Cajun restaurant in Mooresville.

Nashville , the county seat, is a renowned art colony, so plan to browse in the locally owned boutiques and galleries. At the Ferguson House , you’ll enjoy a tasty and creative lunch or dinner, and overnight stays, in the heart of downtown Nashville. This bistro and inn was originally a boarding house, but has been beautifully renovated.

Crown-Point-Shopping

Columbus is known for its mid- century modern architecture, so contact the visitors center ahead of time to book tours. Cool places to stay here are the Inn at Irwin Gardens or Hotel Indigo . At some point you’ll want to tuck into a hot fudge sundae at Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor and Museum.

Shoppers among you will want to head to Indiana Premium Outlets and the Exit 76 Antique Mall just a few miles away in Edinburgh.

Farther south still is historic Corydon in Harrison County. Pick up a map at the Blaine H. Wiseman Visitors Center and find your way to the historic buildings that made up Indiana’s first state capital. For entertainment visit Zimmerman’s Art Glass , where you can watch demonstrations and take something home from the gift shop. Have breakfast at KentJava Bar that serves fresh-roasted coffee and pastries and taste wine at the Turtle Run Winery and Best Vineyards .

The Loft-Richmond-Indiana

Along the Ohio River is historic Madison , which holds the distinction of being the nation’s largest contiguous historic landmark district. It’s here you’ll find blocks and blocks of local shopping and dining options. Add in the area’s art galleries, museums, wineries, and spas, and you have the perfect combination for a girlfriends’ getaway.

French Lick-West Baden is a girlfriends’ getaway dream. Their two resorts offer world-class spas where you can get pampered with an array of treatments. Or, for an experience unique to the area, soak in a famous Pluto or Sprudel bath. If your itinerary doesn’t include a spa day, both hotels have indoor/outdoor pools and hot tubs that hit the spot for relaxation. Rent a surrey cart, which is sure to provide some laughs for everyone as you explore some of the resort’s 3,200 acres together.

While Vincennes and Knox County attract history buffs, the area is a must visit for its shopping, restaurants, and specialty attractions. Be sure and plan time to visit Little Hill Flower Farm , where you can pick and design your own floral arrangements.

If the outdoors is your thing, explore Squire Boone Caverns , Indiana Caverns and Marengo Cave . Canoe down the Blue River , hike or bike the 25 miles of trails O’Bannon Woods State Park or test your skill at Squire Boone Caverns Zipline Adventures. Accommodations here range from camping and cabins to the historic Kintner House B&B in downtown Corydon.

Moscow concert attack: More than 60 reported dead; ISIS claims responsibility

This live blog has ended. For the most recent updates, please click here .

What we know about the Moscow concert attack

  • Men in camouflage broke into a Moscow concert hall and opened fire, shooting an unknown number of people, Russia’s prosecutor general said.
  • The terror group ISIS has claimed responsibility but did not provide proof of the claim, which was made on ISIS-affiliated news agency Amaq on Telegram.
  • Russia's Investigative Committee said that more than 60 people are dead after the attack at Crocus City Hall. Officials have said more than 100 others were injured.
  • A fire also started inside Crocus City Hall, a large concert venue northwest of central Moscow. Firefighters have evacuated about 100 people from the basement of the building and efforts are underway to rescue people from the roof, Russian emergency officials said.
  • Russia officials said they were investigating the attack as a terrorist act.
  • A popular rock band was scheduled to play what appeared to be a sold-out show at the venue, which has a maximum capacity of more than 9,000 people.

Three children among those killed, state media reports

Three children were among the more than 60 people killed in yesterday's attack at Crocus City Hall, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported, citing the Russian Ministry of Health.

Officials have warned that the death toll connected to the deadly incident may increase as the investigation continues.

Xi sends condolences to Putin

Chinese President Xi Jinping sent condolences to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday after a deadly shooting at a concert hall near Moscow, saying China opposes all forms of terrorism and strongly condemns terrorist attacks.

China firmly supports the Russian government’s efforts to maintain national security and stability, Xi said, according to CCTV state television.

Moscow bloodshed comes two decades after some of worst attacks in Russia

Phil Helsel

The shooting attacks in Moscow are the latest in a series of deadly terror attacks in the country since the 2000s.

In 2004, militants from Chechnya and elsewhere took hostages at a school in Beslan in southern Russia.

The militants demanded a withdrawal from Chechnya. Hostages were kept in a gymnasium, and 334 died — half of them children — when gunfire and explosions erupted when it was stormed. Hostages’ families were critical of the rescue operation. Russian prosecutors later cleared authorities .

Two years prior, in 2002, Chechen separatists attacked the Dubrovka Theater in Moscow and took more than 700 people hostage. Russian forces used gas, and 129 hostages died. The attackers were killed.

More recently, in 2017 a suicide bomber from Kyrgyzstan killed 15 people as well as himself in an attack on a St. Petersburg subway. In 2013, two bombers killed a combined 34 people in attacks on a railway station and a trolleybus in Volgograd.

The group Islamic State, also known as ISIS, claimed responsibility for the attacks Friday at the Crocus City Hall venue.

Putin wishes victims well, deputy prime minister says

President Vladimir Putin is thinking of those injured in today’s attack and thanked doctors, a Russian government official said according to state media.

State media TASS reported that “Putin wished all those injured in the emergency at Crocus City Hall to recover and conveyed his gratitude to the doctors, Golikova said,” referring to Tatiana Golikova deputy prime minister for social policy, labor, health and pension provision.

More than 60 dead, and death toll could grow, Russian agency says

Russia’s Investigative Committee said Saturday that more than 60 people have died in the attack, and warned the number may increase.

smoke fire terror attack

“The bodies of the dead are being examined. It has been previously established that more than 60 people died as a result of the terrorist attack. Unfortunately, the number of victims may increase,” according to the Investigative Committee, which is a federal state agency.

Russia's Ministry of Internal Affairs and the security agency FSB are continuing to investigate, the committee said in a statement, and weapons and ammunition have been found.

U.S. warned Russia about planned terrorist attack in Moscow, NSC says

Monica Alba

The United States shared information about a potential terrorist attack in Moscow with Russia’s government earlier this month, a spokesperson for the National Security Council said.

The U.S. Embassy in Russia on March 7 warned U.S. citizens to avoid crowds and said it was monitoring reports that extremists might attack large gatherings in Moscow.

“Earlier this month, the U.S. Government had information about a planned terrorist attack in Moscow — potentially targeting large gatherings, to include concerts — which prompted the State Department to issue a public advisory to Americans in Russia,” NSC spokesperson Adrienne Watson said.

“The U.S. Government also shared this information with Russian authorities in accordance with its longstanding ‘duty to warn’ policy,” Watson said.

Putin recently dismissed ‘provocative’ warning about potential attacks

In remarks that aired three days ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the West of “provocative statements” about potential terror attacks in Russia, and dismissed them.

Putin Russian Election Moscow

“I’ll remind you of recent, let’s say directly, provocative statements of certain official Western structures about potential terror attacks in Russia,” Putin said.

“All of this looks like obvious blackmail and an attempt to intimidate, destabilize our country,” he said before the state security agency FSB.

Putin in those remarks did not specify a country or warning. The U.S. embassy in Russia on March 7 warned U.S. citizens to avoid crowds .

“The Embassy is monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts, and U.S. citizens should be advised to avoid large gatherings over the next 48 hours,” the U.S. embassy warned.

Guards at concert hall didn't have guns, state news says

The Associated Press

Guards at the concert hall didn’t have guns, and some could have been killed at the start of the attack, Russian media reported.

Some Russian news outlets suggested the assailants fled before special forces and riot police arrived.

Reports said police patrols were looking for several vehicles the attackers could have used to escape.

U.S. had been gathering intelligence that ISIS could attack Russia

nearby places to visit with gf

Ken Dilanian

The U.S. had been gathering intelligence for months that ISIS could mount a mass casualty attack in Russia, two U.S. officials confirmed to NBC News.

That information led to a March 7 warning issued by the U.S. embassy in Russia about possible extremist attacks, including at concerts, urging people to stay away from large gatherings, one of the officials said.

That official said the claim of responsibility today by ISIS appears to be genuine, though no final assessment had been made about who was responsible.

Some Moscow concertgoers filmed events as they unfolded Friday night, when gunmen opened fire inside a theater and people ran to take cover in fear for their lives.

Witness says gunfire was first thought to be construction noise

A witness to today’s armed attack on Moscow’s Crocus City Hall told a state news agency that they first mistook the gunfire for sounds of an installation being dismantled.

“First, we started hearing typical loud pops, but it was impossible to understand that they were gunshots. We thought that something was falling, as exhibitions were being dismantled at that moment, and someone seemed to be dropping something large,” Mikhail Semyonov told TASS .

“Then, the bangs were getting more and more frequent. Suddenly, there was a scream, and the bangs started to be heard as bursts. Then it became clear that it was shooting,” he said.

ISIS claims responsibility for attack but does not provide proof

The terror group Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack in Moscow.

The group, also known as ISIS, did not provide any proof of its claim, which came from ISIS-affiliated news agency Amaq on Telegram.

The group’s members have carried out a number of terror attacks, including the 2015 attacks in Paris that killed 130 people.

Children among the victims, Russia's children commissioner says

Yuliya Talmazan

Russia’s commissioner for children’s rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, said children were among the victims of tonight's attack.

"Information about their condition is regularly updated," Lvova-Belova said on Telegram. "Any additional assistance will be provided immediately."

She later told Russia 24 TV channel that at least two children had been injured, including one boy with a gunshot wound.

Earlier, Russian officials released a preliminary casualty toll of at least 40 people dead and more than 100 injured.

France, U.K., Germany condemn attack

Officials from France, the U.K. and Germany were among those who expressed their condolences to the victims of the attack at the Crocus concert hall.

"The images of the terrible attack on innocent people in Crocus City Hall near #Moscow are horrific," Germany's Foreign Office said on X . "The background must be investigated quickly. Our deepest condolences with the families of the victims."

"We condemn the terrorist attack in the Crocus City Hall near Moscow," the U.K.'s embassy in Russia said . "This is a terrible tragedy."

Meanwhile, France's foreign ministry called for "full light" to be shed on "these heinous acts."

Public events across Russia called off after attack

Several regional leaders across Russia, including in the annexed Kherson region of Ukraine, have canceled public events this weekend over security considerations after the deadly concert attack in Moscow.

Shortly after the attack, Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin canceled all sports, cultural and other public events in Moscow this weekend. State news agency TASS also quoted Russia's cultural ministry as saying that mass and entertainment events in federal cultural institutions have been canceled in the coming days.

Zelenskyy adviser speaks out about attack

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s adviser denied that Ukraine was involved in the deadly Crocus concert hall attack.

“Ukraine certainly has nothing to do with the shooting/explosions in the Crocus City Hall (Moscow Region, Russia),” Mykhailo Podolyak wrote on X. “It makes no sense whatsoever.”

No evidence has emerged to suggest Ukraine may have been involved, but Ukrainian officials may be trying to pre-empt accusations, as some Kremlin hawks have already started pointing at Kyiv.

Asked whether the shooting was at all tied to the war in Ukraine, U.S. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said: “There is no indication at this time that Ukraine, or Ukrainians, were involved in the shooting, but again, this just broke. We’re taking a look at it, but I would disabuse you at this early hour have any connection to Ukraine.”

Videos posted to social media appear to show chaos inside Moscow's Crocus City Hall during and after a terrorist attack.

Some videos include what sound like gunshots and show men with rifles, as concertgoers frantically try to exit the venue.

State Department issues warning to Americans in Moscow

Jason Abbruzzese

The State Department said that the U.S. Embassy in Moscow is aware of the terrorist attack on Crocus City Hall and that U.S. citizens should avoid the area and follow the instructions of local authorities.

"The U.S. government’s ability to provide routine or emergency services to U.S. citizens in Russia is severely limited, particularly in areas far from the U.S. embassy in Moscow, due to Russian government limitations on travel for U.S. embassy personnel and staffing, and the ongoing suspension of operations, including consular services, at U.S. consulates in Russia," the State Department said in a message posted to its website .

'What a nightmare in Crocus,' Widow of opposition leader Alexei Navalny condolences about concert attack

Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny who died in prison last month, expressed her condolences about the attack Friday.

"What a nightmare in Crocus," Navalnaya wrote on X. "Condolences to the families of the victims and quick recovery to the injured. Everyone involved in this crime must be found and held accountable."

320 firefighters, 3 helicopters working to put out fire

Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations said the number of rescue crews responding to the attack is growing and now includes more than 320 firefighters, 130 emergency vehicles and three helicopters dumping water on the burning concert venue.

Moscow regional governor says 40 dead, more than 100 injured

Moscow Regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov said on Telegram that at least 40 people are dead and more than 100 injured in the terrorist attack, confirming figures previously reported by Russian state news.

Putin informed about concert venue attack 'in the first minutes,' Kremlin spokesperson says

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said President Vladimir Putin was informed about the shooting at the Crocus concert hall "in the first minutes" of the attack, Russian state news agency RIA reported.

The president is receiving information about what is happening and the measures being taken through all relevant services and is giving necessary instructions, Peskov said according to RIA.

Russian journalist was inside concert venue when gunmen entered

Russian news agency RIA Novosti said on Telegram that one of its reporters was inside the venue when gunmen entered and began shooting concertgoers.

The journalist said that at least three unmasked gunmen in camouflage entered the hall a few minutes before 8 p.m. Moscow time. They shot people point-blank and threw incendiary bombs, according to the journalist.

Roof of concert hall partially collapsing, TASS reports

The roof of the concert hall is partially collapsing, Russian state news agency Tass reported.

A TASS correspondent reporting from the scene in Moscow said the fire on the roof is still raging but that the structure is beginning to collapse in some places. The glass facade of the building is also reported to be crumbling.

It's unclear if there are still people inside the building.

Russia's foreign ministry spokesperson calls incident 'bloody terrorist attack'

Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for Russia's foreign ministry, called the Friday night incident at the Crocus City Hall in Moscow a "bloody terrorist attack" as she called for "strong condemnation" from the international community.

"Now, as the Russian authorities have stated, all efforts are being devoted to saving people," Zakharova said. "The entire world community is obliged to condemn this monstrous crime!"

U.S. national security spokesperson says embassy has told Americans to avoid large gatherings in Moscow

See what the solar eclipse will look like in your city

April 8 may be your best chance to see a total solar eclipse for two decades.

Scroll to continue

If you could look down on Earth from space during April’s total solar eclipse, you would see the moon cast its shadow on the planet, creating a dark blob that will dart across the land from Mexico into Texas and up toward Maine and Canada.

And if you are lucky enough to be looking up from Earth in the moon’s shadow, you’ll see the sky fall dark, it will get colder and quieter, and for a special three to four minutes, you’ll be able to view the sun’s glowing white corona.

For many people in North America, April 8 is likely to be the best opportunity in their lifetime to experience a total solar eclipse. Most in the contiguous United States, however, will only experience a partial eclipse.

Whether you see a total or partial eclipse all depends on where you are to view the phenomenon.

An estimated 31.5 million people live within the roughly 115-mile wide path of totality that stretches from Mazatlán, Mexico, to Newfoundland, Canada. Inside the path, as the sun, moon and Earth become perfectly aligned, the moon blocks the sun and casts its shadow on Earth. The farther away you are from the center of this path, the less the moon will obscure the sun. People within the contiguous United States who are outside the path will see a partial eclipse.

“During a total eclipse, you’re plunged into the moon’s shadow. You’re in this eerie twilight. You can see bright stars and planets in the sky. And of course, the biggest attraction is you see the sun’s solar corona. You don’t see any of those things in the partial eclipse, even at 99 percent,” said Fred Espenak, a retired NASA astrophysicist who has experienced 30 total solar eclipses. “It’s the difference between night and day.”

The difference is so enormous, even veteran eclipse viewers often don’t have words that do justice to totality.

“You think you know what you’re going to experience, but you have no idea,” said Kate Russo, an author, psychologist and eclipse chaser who will be seeing her 14th total solar eclipse in April. “I always say it’s like the ineffable,” she added. “Sometimes things happen to us that we just have no words to describe.”

Eagle Pass, TX • Sun will be 100% obscured

Washington, D.C. • Sun will be 87% obscured

Inside the path, as the moon creeps closer to fully blocking the sun, the temperature drops and the light and wind change. Insects and animals may fall silent. Some birds might return to home to roost. And even though you’re expecting it, Russo said, it’s still so surprising.

“You notice the darkening that’s coming toward you, and that’s really eerie and it puts the hair on the back of your neck,” she said. “It really is quite exciting and thrilling, and you just can’t believe that it’s going to happen.”

The fleeting moments of totality will last anywhere from a few seconds to over four minutes, depending where you are inside the path. Mexico and 12 U.S. states have cities that will get duration times longer than four minutes. The longest totality will be in Torreón, Mexico, and will last 4 minutes and 28 seconds . Compared with other eclipses that typically only last a couple of minutes, that’s quite a long time. In 2017, the longest duration was near Carbondale, Ill., where the eclipse lasted for 2 minutes and 42 seconds.

For one of her books , Russo interviewed first-time eclipse viewers asking how totality made them feel. Their responses aligned with her own experiences: Within totality, the awe, connection and euphoria that people experience leaves them feeling both insignificant and a part of something greater than themselves, Russo said.

“We’re only on this Earth for just a split second of time. And I think these moments actually highlight that for you,” she said. “It puts all our other concerns or problems just into perspective.”

Within totality, there’s a lot to see when you remove your safety glasses. April’s eclipse will coincide with heightened solar activity. As the moon blocks the bright face of the sun, it reveals the sun’s outer atmosphere, called the corona, and can show plumes of gas, referred to as streamers, escaping into space. These look like bright streaks or feathery rays flowing around the edge of the sun. Prominences, or magnetic loops that glow bright pink or red around the inner atmosphere, will also probably be more visible. Venus and Jupiter can also be seen on either side of the sun.

nearby places to visit with gf

Outside of totality, the partial eclipse — even a view with 99 percent of the sun obscured — must be viewed safely with a simple viewer or safety glasses . According to Espenak, once you’re out of the path of totality, there’s not a big difference in what you’ll see. “It’s just a thinner slice of the sun that’s visible. It’s only when you make that transformation from the partial eclipse to a total eclipse that you get this dramatic change.”

Patrick Poitevin, an eclipse chaser and astronomer from Derbyshire, England, has experienced 24 total eclipses. Poitevin, who said he’s always looking for a “different” or “extreme” view, will travel to Mazatlán in April. He added that there’s lots to see along the edge or just inside or outside the path of totality using a telescope with a hydrogen-alpha filter. “What a show!” he wrote of an eclipse last year in Kosrae, Micronesia, in which he saw from a mile outside of the path a nearly 360-degree view of the chromosphere, a colored layer of the sun’s atmosphere, just above the solar surface. “Mesmerising,” he added.

Eclipses over the next 50 years

This year’s eclipse

spin me

While total solar eclipses happen about every 18 months , they are often in remote parts of the world, including the middle of the ocean. By contrast, this eclipse will pass through several densely populated cities. “It’s not that common that you get a total eclipse going through your home country,” Espenak said. “We had the 2017 eclipse, and before that it was 1979. So that was a 38-year gap.”

The next total solar eclipse visible across the contiguous United States won’t be until 2045 and will travel from California through Florida. After that, a 2078 eclipse will pass through nine Southern states.

“If you can’t travel [to totality], still go out and enjoy the partial eclipse,” Russo advises. To view the eclipse in April, she will be heading to Uvalde County, Tex., where she has held workshops and helped local officials with planning. “This is your chance,” she said, “an easy chance to get into the path.”

Espenak, whose work at NASA included eclipse predictions, met his wife, Patricia, during a 1995 eclipse in India. For 25 years, Patricia had struck out on seeing totality — her view was either partial or cloudy. It was only in India where she finally saw totality. The two will be traveling from Arizona to Mazatlán to view April’s eclipse, and Fred will be speaking.

“ I’m excited at every single one. Over a lifetime of seeing these things, I get goose bumps, and there’s that thrill of seeing it every single time,” Espenak said. “No matter how many photographs or videos you look at, it’s nothing like the real McCoy.”

About this story

We created the eclipse animations by interpolating the moon’s path, calculating its trajectory based on the initial, midpoint and final positions during the eclipse.

Eclipse animation data was sourced from the Five Millennium Canon of Solar Eclipses Database by Xavier M. Jubier, which is based on NASA’s eclipse predictions by Fred Espenak. The algorithms used were drawn from “Elements of Solar Eclipses 1951-2200” and “Astronomical Algorithms.” Eclipse track data was obtained from NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio.

Eclipse city view animation speeds are not reflective of actual eclipse durations. Half of the city of San Antonio, Texas falls within totality and half falls outside of totality. So depending on where you are inside the city, the sun may not be 100% obscured as it is depicted in the animation.

The temple is located at the top of the hill and enshrines the idols of Lord Ganesha, Goddess Parvati, Lord Vishnu, Lord Karthikeya as well as Devateshwar. It is also said to have served as the sole place of worship of the Peshwa rulers in the bygone eras.

Shaniwar Wada is an excellent example of the Maratha Imperial architecture used in India in the bygone era. It tells the historical tale of the Maratha Kingdom as it has seen every event that occurred in Peshwas Life over time. It was built by the Peshwas’ symbolizing the brave hearts of the Marathas, who strived hard to keep its glory alive. Though the fort couldn’t tolerate the battering from the wrong time but the stone boundaries still recite the untold tales of the colourful journeys lead by the heroic Marathas. However, some ruins still remain reciting the remarkable stories and contorted tales. You can witness the enormous stone boundaries made to protect the beautiful Shaniwar Wada, which shows the level of security provided to the people of the kingdom. The walls have a magnificent wooden gate reflecting the Mughal architecture, which is another example of how secure the palace was made. There are long iron spikes tucked into the gate, which could reduce the attack of the enemy and kept elephants away.Besides this, you can see a garden which follows the style of the Mughal architecture. It also has a lovely fountain resembling a 16 petaled lotus, right in the middle of the garden. Adding to that, you can see the boundaries marked on the ground, which could tell about all the rooms. There is nothing more than this havoc of time, which changed the face of the mighty Shaniwar Wada into nothing. But you can still make these remains your window into the past to relive what has happened in history.History of Shaniwar Wada:The foundation stone of the Shaniwar Wada was laid in 1730 by Peshwa Bajirao I. Initially, it was intended to be a colossal palace of seven stories made out of stone. But the people of the national capital argued that only King can have a castle made of stone. So, the construction of Shaniwar Wada began using bricks. It took two years to complete this elegant structure, which displayed an excellent blend of the Maratha Imperial architecture with the Mughal architecture. The interiors had valuable furniture and decorations along with carvings of flowers and paintings of scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. The first major fire in the year 1791 destroyed a significant part of the fort, which was re-constructed again. Then the next explosion in 1808 burnt all the necessary artifacts and documents in the palace. Then another fire in 1812 destroyed the upper two stories of the castle, followed by a fire in 1813 which destroyed the Royal Hall. All this destruction was taken to another level in the year 1818. The British attacked Shaniwar Wada, which resulted in collapsing all the top stories. Finally, in the year 1828, a fire caught the whole palace, which burned for a week and wrecked it. Architecture of Shaniwar Wada:Architecture of Shaniwar Wada is an excellent example of Maratha style of construction blended with authentic Mughal architecture. The main gate, also known as Delhi Darwaza, is adorned with iron spikes to restrain the enemy attack as it is enormous enough to pass an elephant through it. There is a small aisle on the top of the door which has dome-shaped windows definitely taken from the Mughal architecture. Besides this gate, the Wada has four more gates, namely Mastani Darwaza, Khidki Darwaza, Ganesh Darwaja, and Narayan Darwaza. The walls have floral carvings and paintings resembling the Mughal architecture style. Scenes from Ramayana and Mahabharata are also found painted at various significant spots. The windows and doors are also dome-shaped contributing to the traces of Mughal architecture. Archaeologists believe that initially, the fort was six-floored before it was destroyed by the fire. Finally, the garden has a 16 petaled lotus representing the grace of the bygone era.

Aga Khan Palace

Built in 1982 by Sultan Muhammed Shah Aga Khan III, the Aga Khan Palace is a magnificent piece of history situated in 19 acres of land in the Yerwada area in Pune. Referred to as one of the most important landmarks of Indian history, along with the Indian freedom struggle, the palace has its roots deeply etched into bygone eras. The palace was built to help the poor in the areas surrounding Pune, which was drastically hit by famine in the early 1980s. One of the most stunning pieces of architecture in all of Pune, the Aga Khan Palace is also a famous tourist attraction, which was designed by a world-famous architect called Charles Correa.Additionally, the palace houses the samadhis (memorials) of Mahatma Gandhi’s wife, Kasturba Gandhi. Sources suggest that both Kasturba Gandhi and Mahatma Gandhi’s secretary Mahadev Desai breathed their last in the palace premises. And it is because of this that their memorials have been safeguarded in the palace grounds. The Aga Khan Palace is located in a huge ground, and has five, luxurious and spacious halls, along with several lawns. The structure resonates of Italian architecture, elegant yet intricate and magnificent.Of all the rooms and features of the palace, its arches are the most beautiful, almost mesmerising to the eyes. Aga Khan Palace has two huge floors, in addition to a corridor which spreads across the entire structure. The palace is known for organising several exhibitions and programmes throughout the year. Most of these reflect Gandhi’s lifestyle, thereby offering visitors a deep insight into the Mahatma’s life. Moreover, it is because of this and Gandhi’s links to it that the palace is now also known as the Gandhi National Memorial Society. One of the most prominent attractions of the palace is the room where Gandhi stayed during his imprisonment, along with his personal belongings and pictures of the other freedom fighters. |

Sinhagad Fort

Sinhagad or Kondana is a pride of the southwestern region of Pune. This fort was the one to support Maharashtra during the ancient battles. Sinhagad battle of 1671 is the significant one. Bhuleshwar range of the great Sahyadris is the home to this historical monument. The fortress has an elevation of around 1312 m above the sea level. Sinhagad has got its own breakneck slopes to protect it from all sides. There are two entrances to this fort – one in the north-eastern region (Pune Darwaza) and another one towards the southeastern part (Kalyan Darwaza). The authenticity and the richness of Sinhagad fortress date back to around 1000 years. This is evident from the carvings present on the walls of Kaundinya Eshwar temple there. Sinhagad is valued as a true sightseeing heritage. To begin your sightseeing adventure, you have Rajaram’s tomb which is worth a visit. The fortress displays some of the adorable monoliths of Tanaji Malusare – one of the efficient safe-keepers of the fort from Shivaji Maharaj’s era. Besides these crucial displays, the fortress has got its own military depot, a Kali temple, breweries, and a Hanuman effigy. Pune Darwaza, Kalyan Darwaza, Tilak Bungalow, Hawa Point, Kade Lot, Amruteshwar Temple, Tanaji Samadhi and Memorial raises the elegance of this fortress even today.Summiting the fortress offers some stunning views of the Khadakwasla Dam from one end; while from its other side, you can see glimpses of Torna Fort.
