You’ll Know You’ve Found Your Ideal Travel Companion if They Have These 4 Qualities

travel companion example

It's key to pinpoint the qualities of an ideal travel companion because the same aspects of travel that make it worthwhile and memorable—unexpected adventures and misadventures, exposure to different cultures and people, and extended time with friends and loved ones—can also lead to friction and tension in the wrong company. Knowing your travel soul mate, though, can make the experience fun and memorable.

Why a lot of your friends might not be the ideal travel companion

Finding someone you enjoy traveling with is much like dating because it's all about compatibility, says counselor Alexandra Cromer, LPC. But, your ideal travel companion doesn't need to be someone you're close with in your daily life. In fact, many friendships won't lend themselves to travel companionship.

Taking a trip with an ill-matched travel buddy opens you up to the risk of shifting your own expectations to accommodate theirs, which can detract from your own experience.

Think about it: Going on a vacation stands to bring up all sorts of scenarios that aren't present during, say, a lunch date or a catch-up phone call. So even if you get along great with a friend in day-to-day life, it may not translate well to a trip. Having  sustained contact with a travel companion for the duration of your trip exposes you to more of their habits and foibles, which creates more opportunity for disagreements. And taking a trip with an ill-matched travel buddy opens you up to the risk of shifting your own expectations to accommodate theirs, which can detract from your own experience.

For example, you may not have an issue with a friend who is not great at adjusting to unexpected circumstances at home (you may not even know this about them!). But this quality could stir up problems when dealing with all the curveballs traveling, in particular, throws. "It might be convenient to travel with your best friend," says Cromer. "But the reality is that some people [are just incompatible]." she says.

What to look for in a could-be travel buddy

It may sound counterintuitive, but Cromer says people with whom you aren't close, in particular, can be a great travel companions. You can evaluate this person without extra pressures and expectations you might place on a close friend, and also, someone with whom you're not that close may be better able to communicate directly about what they want you and also respect your boundaries.

{{post.sponsorText}}

So where do you find these people, if not in your immediate friend group? Cromer suggests looking at social media to see if any acquaintances seem to enjoy traveling and doing the same things you like to do, and also turning to local interest groups.

For example, Cromer says some of her clients in Richmond, Virginia, who met through a walking group have started taking local day trips to Washington, D.C. to explore their shared interest of checking out new coffee shops. Tapping your community beyond your immediate friend group can surface people who have the same interests you do, which could help uncover your ideal travel buddy.

You don't need to share the same habits or have identical interests, but rather mutual grounding principles and general outlooks will help ensure everyone has a great time. Read on for four qualities of an ideal travel companion.

4 qualities of an ideal travel companion

1. they’re flexible and willing to compromise.

Flexibility is a key quality for a good travel buddy. Someone who can rebound from setbacks—like bad weather leading to a canceled activity—and adjust to unexpected circumstances will make the headaches that come with traveling easier to navigate.

“If you are traveling with someone who is flexible, that supersedes whether or not they're a planner or whether or not they like to sleep in because that means they’re going to be respectful of your needs and your goals on this trip,” Oneika Raymond , a TV host and travel content creator, says.

Raymond says she and her husband, who is her ideal travel companion, have different travel styles (he's a planner while she likes to go with the flow; she sleeps in and he's an early riser), but they've successfully traveled to more than 80 countries together by adjusting to each other's habits and making sure each of them has something to look forward to on the itinerary.

2. You agree on the financials

Your ideal travel companion doesn’t have to have the exact same financial situation or budget as you do, but they will have a clear understanding of their individual financial expectations for the trip. To make sure nobody is chasing down payments or footing the bill unexpectedly, have an “open and honest dialogue” about all financial aspects of the trip in the planning stages.

Someone who is upfront about what they can and can't do financially and wants to figure out these details in advance to prevent drama and chaos on the trip itself is worth holding onto as a travel companion. Before you travel with someone, especially someone you may not know well, confirm that you're aligned on the financial details and expectations of the trip.

Get into the details beyond how flights, activities, and accommodations will be paid for; Raymond suggests talking through different scenarios that might pop up, like how bills will be split while dining out, what will happen if someone spends more money during an excursion or during a meal, and how to proceed if someone’s credit card doesn’t work. Use their answers to evaluate if this travel pairing will work.

3. They have the same goals for the trip as you

Another sign you've found an ideal travel companion is that you want the same thing out of your trip. It’s going to be tough for everyone on a trip to get what they want out of it if their goals diverge wildly. Someone who wants to spend all their time in a city center, exploring museums and shops, may not be satisfied with the ideal itinerary of someone who wants to do every rustic outdoor activity and never spend time in the city. A traveler who is set on going out every night and hitting every club may not gel with someone who would rather do anything but.

Some introspection beforehand can shed light on this. Sahara Rose De Vore , founder of the Travel Coach Network, helps clients maximize their trips by encouraging them to pinpoint what they want to gain from the experience. “Everyone’s personality and different quirks and expectations come [on the trip], but if they share a common ground, they’re going to be able to make the trip work together as partners,” she says.

Some of the questions De Vore asks to gauge whether folks have similar goals include include how the person wants to feel after the trip, what the trip means to them, and how they want it to affect their relationship. “It’s really identifying what you are looking to get out of it," she says. "Do you want to enrich [the relationship], build your bond, understand each other, create lifelong memories, or all of the above?” Being on the same page as your travel partner about the overall goals will help smooth over bumps and is a good indication you'll get along.

4. They’re independent

Factoring in some alone time to decompress and recharge is key, and an ideal travel companion understands and respects that. “Traveling with someone doesn’t mean that you have to do everything in lockstep, because that’s a really unhealthy way to travel, and it’s going to cause friction at some point” Raymond says. Someone who can be happy and confident entertaining themselves and spending time alone also helps ensure everyone on the trip is reaching their goals.

A great travel partner won’t mind if you leave them alone for a bit, or if you change your mind about an activity. At the same time, they won't muscle you into only doing what they want to do. "'My way or the highway' is a trip killer,” Raymond adds.

3 Tips for choosing the best travel partners

Traveling with a compatible partner can make your journey more enjoyable and memorable. To ensure a successful journey, it is essential to discuss and agree on travel goals, preferences, and expectations . This involves communicating openly about your interests, budgets, and travel styles.

1. Define your travel goals

To begin with, discuss what you want to achieve during your trip. Are you looking for adventure or relaxation? Do you prefer cultural experiences or exploring nature?

By understanding each other's goals, you can create an itinerary that caters to both of your interests.

2. Determine your budgets

Budget is often a significant factor when traveling. Discuss the sum of money each individual is willing to allocate for lodgings, nourishment, transport and activities.

Establishing a budget range will help avoid conflicts later on in the planning process.

3. Discuss travel styles

Everyone has their own unique way of traveling - some may enjoy luxury hotels while others are content with hostels and backpacking style of travel ; some might prefer guided tours whereas others like going off-the-beaten-path independently.

Discuss these preferences upfront so there are no surprises once on the road together.

Couchsurfing

Couchsurfing, known primarily as a homestay network connecting travelers with locals offering free accommodation, also features groups dedicated to finding travel partners.

Join one of these groups or post about your plans in relevant city-specific forums - there's always someone eager to explore new places together.

A resource for backpackers and gap year travelers , offering forums where users can find travel partners or get advice on their journeys.

Tips for using online platforms:

  • Create detailed profiles: Be honest about yourself and what kind of trip you're planning. Constructing comprehensive profiles that accurately reflect who you are and the type of trip you're seeking can help to attract people with similar interests and travel styles.
  • Communicate openly: When reaching out to potential partners, be clear about your expectations and preferences. Ask questions to get a better understanding of their personality and traveling habits.
  • Look for verified users: Many platforms offer verification systems that can provide an added layer of security when connecting with strangers online. Look for profiles with positive reviews or badges indicating they've been vetted by the platform's team.

Take the time to find a compatible travel companion, as this can lead to an enriching experience. Don't forget to stay open-minded - sometimes, the best travel companions are those who challenge us in new ways.

This is an excellent opportunity to meet people on the road and find travel partners, as in most cases there are other volunteers from around the world, as well as local hosts who will make you understand more about the local culture.

The best thing about this is that fellow volunteers will have similar interests to yours, making it easier to build a relationship. Building a strong travel partnership

A successful travel partnership requires clear communication, collaboration, and compromise during the planning phase.

Also, setting expectations is crucial for a strong travel partnership. When planning to travel with someone, discuss preferences, interests, and potential challenges. These are some tips that might help you while traveling with a partner:

Open communication

The foundation of any successful partnership is honesty. Be upfront about expectations and encourage your partner to do the same. Discuss budget, accommodations, activities, and personal habits.

This helps both parties make informed decisions throughout the journey.

Collaborative planning

Involve all partners in the planning process to ensure everyone's needs are met. Share ideas and be open-minded towards suggestions.

Collaborate on deciding which destinations to visit, accommodations to book, and activities to participate in. This ensures both parties have input into the journey's details. Compromise is key - find common ground on shared interests.

Establish expectations

Be upfront about what each person wants from the trip so that everyone's needs are met.

Resolving conflicts amicably

Conflicts can arise while traveling together. Address them constructively. Listen and empathize with your partner's perspective, and find mutually beneficial solutions.

Maintaining a positive travel dynamic

A positive travel dynamic is essential for enjoying the journey. Be flexible, support each other, and celebrate shared experiences. Show appreciation, respect personal space, stay open-minded, and prioritize self-care.

Safety considerations and precautions

Traveling with a partner can be exciting and rewarding, but safety should always be a top priority. Here are some essential steps to take when choosing a travel partner:

Conduct basic background checks

Before deciding on a travel companion, it is prudent to conduct basic background checks for any criminal records or other warning signs that may be present.

Verify that no criminal records or other warning signs are present which could potentially endanger the journey. You can use Instant Checkmate , BeenVerified , or similar services to perform these checks.

Share emergency contact information

Exchange emergency contact information with your travel partner before leaving home. This includes phone numbers for family members or friends who can help in times of need, as well as details about any medical conditions either of you may have.

Create a shared document with important details

Some essential information that should be on your shared document, includes:

  • Name and contact information for each traveler's emergency contacts.
  • A list of medications taken by each person (if applicable).
  • Allergies or dietary restrictions (if applicable).
  • Contact information for the nearest embassy/consulate in the countries you'll visit (for international trips).

Practice personal safety measures together

To ensure both travelers' safety throughout the trip, discuss personal safety measures beforehand and practice them together. Some useful tips include:

  • Always share your location with each other using a GPS tracking app like Life360.
  • Avoid walking alone at night, especially in unfamiliar areas.
  • Keep valuable items hidden and secure while traveling (e.g., use money belts or hidden pockets).
  • Stay aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts if something feels off.

Discuss any worries or difficulties that come up while travelling together to make sure your journey is enjoyable and safe. Remember to communicate openly about any concerns or issues that arise during the trip so you can address them promptly and maintain a positive travel dynamic.

Building a strong relationship with your travel partner is key, so communicate openly and plan ahead to avoid any conflicts or surprises.

How to be a good travel companion: everything you need to know

14 January 2017 by Jo

Hi Frugalistas! When reader CW contacted me suggesting a post on how to be a good travel companion, I knew it was a post that needed to be written.  I also knew it was a post that I knew I needed some help with.  Regular readers will know most of my travelling is solo, or with my family.  When we travel as a family I do most of the organisation and planning, so I don’t really feel that I really get to experience and develop my skills in how to be a good travel companion.  So, I did what anyone would do – I asked a friend.  My travel blogger colleagues are back and this time they are sharing their best ideas on how to be a good travelling companion:

How to be a good travel companion:  pick the person you can’t imagine travelling without

Claudia from  My Adventures Across the World  says there’s nothing better than travelling with her sister, and always has her best experiences when they travel together:

In a world where it is glamorous to profess oneself as a “solo traveler,” I admit that, for as much as I enjoy exploring the world by myself, I feel as my trips are not complete unless my sister is with me. She’s by far my favorite travel companion. Our first big trip together was in 2011, when we went on a road trip to Mexico. We had such a good time, that since then we have a “ritual” of taking at least a trip together each year. What I love about traveling with her is that we know each other so well that we hardly need to talk to communicate – a look is generally enough to understand. And we have very similar tastes and interests, so there’s no real need to compromise. One thing we love doing on each trip, is zip lining. We even did it last March, when we were visiting Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Needless to say, we had a blast.

Claudia and her sister ziplining in Angkor Wat and not saying a word to each other…….

How to be a good travel companion:  choose a companion who travels your way

I love this advice from Katherine of Tara Lets Anywhere .  Just because you are friends with someone doesn’t mean you can travel successfully together.  The best travel companions are those who want to travel your way, not necessarily those you know the best:

I often travel with a group of strangers. The reason is, here in the Philippines, renting a boat for island hopping is expensive when shouldered alone. One thing that I learned on my travels is it’s important to find a companion that travels the same way that you do. Everything else then falls into place.

For instance, I’m a budget backpacker who prefers nature trips. I’ve had experience traveling with other people who prefer city tours instead of exploring the nature and who want to be babysat during trekking in the mountains. I had traveled with “backpackers” who spent most of their times taking photos for Facebook and drinking, limiting our time for exploration. Once I’d stuck to my tribe, I didn’t have any problems about being “a good companion” because we’re naturally on the same page, and rapport — even friendship — just happens.

Katherine finding her tribe – and loving it

How to be a good travel companion:  what to look for

Barbara from Jet-Settera  knows exactly what to look for in choosing the wrong travel companion, and also exactly who she is looking to travel with:

One of the best traveling companions I ever had was a Korean classmate of mine from university. She was quiet and pleasant most of the time. She was well prepared about the destination. She reserved the hotels in advance. She was smart. She always knew her way around the city and she could guide me around without a map. At the same time she was flexible, drama-free, easy going and kind. I think it is important to travel with someone who equally contributes into making the trip a success. Somebody, who is not just looking for a tour guide but also takes part in the trip planning and also well-prepared about the destination and an experienced traveler. Some people especially women can be high-maintenance, dramatic and they often over pack. I knew a girl, who showed up in Paris with a giant luggage and 4 inch heels and she was waiting for guys to carry her luggage around the town. She did not want to take taxis, so she would stand around the metro station and wait for guys to help her carry down her massive luggage. These are the kind of people I would prefer not go on a trip with.

Barbara and her travel companion – a high heel free zone

How to be a good travel companion:  learn the art of compromise

Jules from the team at Don’t Forget to Move reminds us of one the most basic qualities to have as a travel companion – the ability to compromise, even if it is just your choice of pizza topping:

As a long term traveling couple , the most important quality in a traveling companion is the ability to compromise.  When you travel on your own you have the ability to make your own decisions whenever you want.  However, with a traveling companion or partner there are going to be times when both of you want to do something different.

Compromise and flexibility are essentials skills to have when traveling with someone else.

It might be as simple as choosing which pizza to order, or as complex as sitting down and planning a trip together that accounts for both your interests.  And if you really can’t decide on what to do, it’s not the end of the world if you decide to separate for the day to do your own activity.  You’ll probably find that a bit of personal space for the day will give you a fresh insight into your traveling companion and leave you more invigorated for the next adventure!

Sometimes even your pizza topping is a compromise

How to be a good travel companion:  the best way to avoid arguments

Meg and Mike Jerrard of Mapping Megan and Waking Up Wild realise that not everyone is happy all the time and have some very wise advice on how to avoid an argument with your travel companion:

The biggest thing that can ruin a trip is fighting, and many fights are simply caused by the stresses of travel itself.  A good travel companion will go into every trip with an open mind and realise that most of your best laid plans will probably not go perfectly.  Be ready for that Plan B, and don’t buy into the blame game.

If you are getting angry ask yourself if it’s because you’re tired, hungry or both.

It’s inevitable that one of you will screw up at some point along the way, it’s bound to happen, so focus on dealing with the issue instead of making each other feel bad.

How to be a good travel companion:  let love and respect rule

You won’t agree all the time, but Silke from Happiness and Things knows exactly how to handle those awkward moments:

A road trip in Scotland. We are two middle aged women, travel bloggers. My friend is originally from France but now lives in the UK, I am originally from Germany and now live in Australia. We have known each other for almost 20 years but of course distance is what defines our friendship. Last summer we changed the scenario: 6 days on the road in Scotland, just me and her, spending time together 24/7.

Halfway into our trip, my friend turned around and looked at me – you could see that something was bothering her. “How come we haven’t fought yet? I fight with my other friend all the time when we are in the car together. We can end up pretty cross with each other.” I just looked at her and said: “It’s quite easy. You have your ideas and opinions and I have my ideas and opinions. I listen to what you have to say. You know you are pretty opinionated. But I won’t spend my time and energy on changing your mind on something. It’s just not worth it. We love and respect each other, we have a special bond. But we are different people. And I just leave it at that.” She accepted that, no questions asked, and it works.

Love and respect lead to peace and serenity when you travel

How to be a good travel companion:  honour your own interests

Hannah and Adam from Getting Stamped learned an important lesson – it’s no fun doing things just to please another person, even if the other person is your spouse:

My husband and I have been traveling the world nonstop for the last 3.5 years, that’s right we are together 24/7. Traveling as a couple can be tough and being a good travel companion is a must. We have learned the hard way on a few things, like don’t make the other one do/try something they don’t want to do. For example: I really dislike snorkeling/diving and the thought of wetsuits at all. After 3 failed attempts of diving in some of the best places in the world: Belize,  Bali , and the Maldives. We’ve learned it’s good to each have your own hobbies it gives you time apart and let’s you do what you really want to do. So when he is off diving I am relaxing on the beach.

Adam and Hannah learned that to travel as a couple, they needed to have the chance to enjoy their own interests

How to be a good travel companion:  don’t be afraid to do your own thing

Craig and Gemma from Two Scots Abroad are fans of hobbies, and spent 17 months together without killing each other as a result:

Craig and I travelled together for 17 months without killing each other.  The secret?  Hobbies!  During our career breaks to travel the Americas and Europe, I created our travel blog, Two Scots Abroad and Craig began making electronic music.  This time apart was vital for our sanity and also the challenge of these pastimes stopped our brains from turning to mush.  So whether it’s knitting or writing a novel, take inspiration from the road and make full use of that free time – your marriage and friendships will thank you for it!

Spending time apart = more fun together for Gemma and Craig

How to be a good travel companion:  making two couple travel work

Travelling with your spouse can be stressful enough, but imagine travelling with another couple?  Jim and Corinne of  ReflectionsEnroute have not only got travelling as a couple sorted, but they double the fun, by finding the perfect way to travel with another couple:

The most important characteristic for being a great traveling companion is being able to be on your own sometimes. After traveling to over 25 countries with one couple, Jim and I really value the openness that we have with them.  If either of us don’t want to do something, we just say so, and plan when to meet up later. We’ve had amazing travels all over the world with this couple, and it works because we are not trying to be polite and do something we just don’t want to do.

Jim and Corinne, from ReflectionsEnroute, have found the perfect travelling companions.  They are pictured here visiting their 25th country together, Croatia.

How to be a good travel companion:  take advantage of your differences

Travelling with someone very different to yourself doesn’t have to end in tears as Alex from Lost With Purpose  so beautifully shows us:

Fact: getting along doesn’t mean being compatible in every way. When you’re on the road with someone 24/7 you both need to be adaptable, or risk a foul ending to your trip.

I travel with my boyfriend. He enjoys sleeping in where possible, while I’m a frequent early bird. I used to get irritated while waiting for him to wake up—so much time, wasted!—but then I realized it only made things unpleasant for both of us.

Instead, I adapted. Early mornings are now for sunrise walks, quiet reading, and catching up on my blogging to-do list. The boy gets to sleep in, I get to have some quality time for myself, everyone wins!

Alex making the most of her boyfriend’s sleep in

How to be a good travel companion:  agree how to manage your money

Ah, yes, money.  The cause of so many arguments.  Fortunately Jo from Wander With Jo has got some great suggestions on how to agree on money when you are travelling with a companion:

Have a shared view about money and share great experiences

How to be a good travel companion:  divide up the work

Yes, there is work to be done when you are travelling.  Inma and Jose run A World to Travel , a blog that focuses on unique experiences around the world and they’ve worked out that sharing the responsibilities of organising things works best for them:

Finally, it is important to give the other room to fulfill his expectations and needs along the way. Even if it is catching up his soccer team’s matches on the other side of the world when we should be sleeping or partying!

Share the planning, then have fun together like Inma and Jose

How to be a good travel companion:  prepare to share

Carole from Berkeley and Beyond learned a valuable lesson about sharing, generosity and having a great time with your travel companions:

Besides just plain being considerate, a good traveling companion can share.  I had this delightful experience just recently, during a grueling 9-hour bus ride into the hinterlands of Sichuan Provence in China.  Several of my companions on that trip shared food items they purchased at various stops.  One shared pecans that were cracked and deliciously spiced before purchase.  My goodness they were good.  Another shared some fresh figs, and another shared a loaf of local bread.

Next time, I plan to be the one that buys extra and shares the goods.

Sharing is caring, especially when you are travelling with others

How to be a good travel companion:  work to your strengths

As well as sharing the work, Frank from Roar Loud made the great point about identifying who was good at what and working to your strengths for a successful trip:

I find that my perfect travel companion is one that is strong in the areas where I am weak.  Rather than feeding into each others worries or concerns, I think a partner in travel should strengthen you.  When I struggles to organise, they things under control.  Whey they worry about all the little details, I reassure them that we will be fine.

Together we are much better travelers than we could ever be alone.

This partnership can offer the best travel experience possible, allow for the possibility to be a little more adventurous in your travel.  There have been so many things that I would never have dreamed doing if not for the encouragement of my perfect travel companion.

Together we are much better travelers than we could ever be alone

How to be a good travel companion:  pull your own weight

When you travel with someone else it’s easy to just sit back and let them do all the work.  Laura from Savored Journeys always remembers to be a good contributor to the travel experience:

These days I travel almost solely with my husband. We are currently on a 6-week trip in Spain where we’re spending pretty much every hour of every day together. In that amount of time, or even on a shorter trip, it it’s really important to be mindful of how you’re holding your own weight on the trip. What I mean by that is that if one person is doing all the work to make the plans, keep the schedule, find the directions, do the navigating and attempting to negotiate language barriers, the other person is not carrying their share of the weight. In order to keep the balance, and the peace, while traveling with a companion, you really need to share equal parts of the work associated with travel. That might require you to work out each person’s role before you leave.

How to be a good travel companion:  stay patient and positive

Lyn and Steve from A Hole In My Shoe remind us all that you have chosen to travel with that person for a reason, so when things get tough, find a way to keep things positive:

For us, travelling with each other is a very rewarding experience.  The way we react and respond to things that happen on the road can have very different outcomes.  Often actions speak far louder than words and can make or break stressful moments.

On a boring train ride, instead of getting niggly, get silly.

Patience and a few deep breathes go a long way if your companion is trying to figure out directions via the GPS.  And rather than tapping your foot disapprovingly if your partner is struggling with the foregin currency, just relax and enjoy the scenery.

Content and happy travellers are the ones who don’t react to negativity and who notice positive acts of love.

How to be a good travel companion:  learn to laugh (because you will need to)

Megan from Bobo and Chichi reminded me that things will definitely go wrong.  And there’s only one thing to do when it happens – remember to laugh……

Everything going right for Megan……

How to be a good travel companion:  don’t be a spoilsport

Sid from Sid the Wanderer knows the best way to have fun while travelling is to be open to new experiences:

Don’t be a spoilsport! When traveling with friends or people you love, sometimes it’s absolutely alright to let go of your own preferences and join others to have some fun together. It will not allow your travel companion to enjoy more, the good karma will also come back to you soon or later. Travel is all about opening up the world around me, and looking at it from the eyes of others only broadens our own perspective, so be open and be even more accommodating. However, this does not mean you have to compromise on your ethics and principles – for example if you are a vegetarian, there is no need to add meat to your plate, but be open to visit a park that your friend wants to go to or a bar he/ she wants to check out.

How to be a good travel companion:  don’t forget to talk

Oksana & Max from Drink Tea & Travel  never forget the importance of communication:

After almost 3 years of traveling the world together, we’ve collected a lot of tips for those traveling as a couple. But if there is one piece of advice we always stress it is the importance of communication, before and during your trip. Talking about your plans, your personal wants, and expectations during the planning process is necessary to set expectations and build a great foundation for your holiday together. Discuss what you each want to get out of the trip, share your likes and dislikes when it comes to travel, and try to align on the key do and don’ts.

And don’t let the talking stop when you are on the trip. While you may want to avoid conflict and bottle up any small annoyances that come up along the way, we find it to be much more effective to discuss issues (no matter how small) as they come up.

Talk it through, then get onto the fun!

I think my travel blogger colleagues have come up with some fantastic ways to be a good travel companion.  Remember, being a good travel companion is in YOUR hands.  Also remember the only person whose behaviour and attitude you can control is your OWN.  Be a good travel companion by being the best possible version of yourself that you know.

What are your favorite tips for being a good travel companion?

Great collaboration Jo. Its good to read the styles other travellers use to work out a successful trip with a companion. A good companion can make or break a trip, but how you react is in your hands. Thanks for including our contribution.

Some fabulous tips here, thankyou for compiling the post Jo! I’ve always said that traveling together has the capacity to either make or break a relationship, whether or not that’s a friendship or a romantic connection. Hopefully through implementing these tips there will be more “make” and less “break”! 🙂

Thank you for the article, so many different points of view! For my upcoming trip, I think that patience and compromise will be the key things that I need to do. And also not to stress out if we get lost or something. On my first overseas trip, I was stressed for the first few days, mostly trying to make sure that the kids had what they needed with them and didn’t fall onto a train line. This time, travelling alone on the planes to and from Paris, and staying with very experienced travellers, hopefully I will be able to relax and enjoy it. I also mean to take on board the living to one’s one body clock and having some time alone, by getting up early for a walk or going out late afternoon whilst my parents are resting. Now that it’s 2017, I can start getting excited! (leaving mid-April). Thank you again for all of the different inputs to the article.

Great article! I’ve pinned for my followers too, because so many people don’t realize this is critical! Choosing (and being) a good travel companion can make or break a trip. I love traveling solo but since I’m pretty introverted I also realize that having people with me to push me a little is good for me. So finding a companion where we’re on the same page about the basics (pace, types of activities, morning or evening) and willing to go off alone at times is the most important thing for trip harmony, in my experience! Thanks for the post!

How to Find a Good Travel Partner (& How to Be One)

Please share if you enjoy this content!

Many people ask me why I enjoy traveling solo, and I have a lot of responses, including that it’s not easy to find a good travel partner. No matter how close of friends you are with someone, it can be difficult to travel together.

This is especially true on an international trip where you don’t speak the local language.

Being a good travel partner isn’t always about compromising, especially if doing so will frustrate you or cause you not to have a good time. It’s about being as considerate of yourself as the person you’re traveling with and ensuring everyone gets most of what they want.

This post includes my thoughts on what makes a good travel companion.

1. Reach Agreement Before the Trip

What kind of trip do you expect to go on? Is this going to be a five-star splurge or a bare-bones budget vacation? Are you seeking a relaxing getaway or a jam-packed exploration of a location? City or country?

What is the budget you’re able to spend, and do you both agree? One way to have disagreement and frustration very quickly is if you don’t agree on the kind of vacation you are going on.

Being a good travel partner starts at the beginning of the planning stages. I recommend discussing this when planning the trip to ensure you are on the same page. Then, continue the discussion with the decisions that need to be made.

This dialogue continues until the end of the trip as well. There are a lot of decisions you make while you’re traveling, and it’s important to come to an agreement that you are both ok with.

travel buddy, travel partner, travel companion, finding a travel partner, find a travel partner

Areas of Potential Friction

Even amongst the best of friends, you can have very different views about your vacation and your expectations during it. When you start planning your trip, keep these things in mind and discuss any issues throughout.

  • Total budget : It’s important to determine an approximate budget before you travel to ensure you’re on the same page about accommodation and activities.
  • Priorities : Is cost the driving factor in your decisions or experience? Do you want to be active, see certain things, and connect with people? Knowing your own priorities and those of your travel partner is key to agreeing.
  • Where to stay/accommodation : discuss your ideal place to stay before you book, along with your budget. Do you want a hotel or an apartment? Separate bedrooms? What amenities are important?
  • Activities : What are the things you most want to do on this trip? Do you enjoy being active, like hiking or biking, or are you more interested in sitting in cafes and watching the world go by?
  • Early or late start : Are you more of a morning person or a night owl? Do you take forever to get ready in the morning, or are you in for a quick shower, then you want to dash out the door?
  • Downtime : Do you like to go for 12-hour stretches or take breaks during the day, either when you’re out and about or going back to the room to rest?
  • Alone time : Are you used to being with someone 24/7, or do you need some “me time.” What does that look like to you: reading a book in quiet, separate rooms, solo time?
  • Dining/types of cuisine : Besides the budget, what type of restaurants do you enjoy eating in? Take out, sit down, street vendors? Do you want to dress up or go casual? Local and ethnic or American-style food (or that of your country).

What to Do When You Disagree

You don’t want to get up before 8 a.m., and your travel partner wants to be up and out by then. Or you have simple needs and want to stay at budget accommodation in a safe area, but your travel buddy has loftier expectations.

Take the time to talk through these things and work towards a compromise you can both be happy with.

When I went to Italy, I had a day when I was feeling exhausted. My friend wanted to go to a market, but I was not up for all of the hustle and bustle.

Instead of trying to talk her out of it or her trying to talk me into it, I encouraged her to go and enjoy herself while I took a nap. I was nice and rested when she returned, eager to get back out there to see more.

Alternatively, we could have agreed to go to the market on a different day and do something more chill instead.

Don’t be afraid to do your own thing for a while if something is significant to you. Or if there’s something your friend wants to do that you don’t, maybe you can offer to do something he wants to do for him to come with you for what’s important to you.

Compromise and being considerate of each other are what it’s all about.

2. Share Responsibility and Effort

A lot of work goes into planning a trip, before the trip and during. Vacations are fun, but a lot of work goes into making it that way unless you go on a guided trip where everything is planned for you.

There is research to do before you go, bookings to be made, and decisions to be made before and during the trip. It’s a good idea to expect to share those responsibilities to have a good time on the trip.

Several people I have traveled with assumed that since I travel so much, I love to do all the work. The truth is that I enjoy going on great trips, and I’m willing to do the work needed to achieve the result I want.

So, if you’re not offering to help with the research, then offer to do something else.

Some Examples

For example, on a recent trip I took with a friend to Alaska, I did most of the research before the trip. She did all of the driving.

I was over the moon as I hadn’t driven on the snow and ice for many years and was a little concerned, especially at night (I am NOT a night owl). She took that worry from me, so we both felt it was a great share of work.

Alternatively, I went on a trip to Costa Rica with a friend, which was the opposite experience. I planned everything before the trip and even heard her tell someone that she let me because I love doing it (she never asked if that was the case).

Then, I had to make every decision during the trip. This included when to go places, where to eat, and research restaurants. I tried to go for a walk to get some “me” time, and she insisted on going.

Needless to say, it was a very frustrating trip and not a fun experience for me at all.

3. Talk About Splitting Costs

Talk about how you plan to split costs during your trip before you leave. Do you plan to alternate meals or split the bills? Will you get the rental car, and the other get meals?

Or will one person pay for everything, and the other will pay after the trip? However you do it, make sure you agree and both feel comfortable.

4. Have Patience

Traveling can be stressful, particularly internationally, when you don’t speak the local language. Patience certainly is not one of my virtues, but when traveling, you have to dig deep to find it where you don’t know you have it.

I remember on my first trip to Asia, after a painfully long and sleepless flight, we arrived at a ridiculously crowded airport. I don’t recall what set my friend off, but it was about figuring out where we had to go.

He had a bit of a meltdown at the airport. That was ok—I was on it. I suggested he sit down and watch our bags, and I’d head out to figure things out.

It could have escalated to an argument since we were exhausted and cranky, but it didn’t. Don’t worry; I paid him back later in the trip with my meltdown.

He was equally patient with me and cared while I cooled off. Travel is all about teamwork when you travel with others.

5. Consideration and Compromise

No matter how close of friends you may be with your travel companion, you will have differences of opinion on things during the trip. How you handle it is essential to make for a great time on vacation.

Do you want to see something your friend doesn’t? Or does your travel partner want to stay in, but you want to go out? Take turns with the decision-making; remember, it’s ok to do things independently.

travel buddy, travel partner, travel companion, finding a travel partner, find a travel partner

6. Communication Before & During the Trip

It is crucial that you express your needs and wants during a trip. Of course, this is important at any time in any relationship. When you are traveling with a person, it’s essential.

Say what you want or what you need, and listen when the other person does the same. Although you may be friends, hanging out together and living together, even for a week or two, is very different.

Ask questions instead of assuming. Is your friend in a bad mood or angry with you? Ask the question so you can handle it so it doesn’t fester on the trip. I didn’t heed this advice once, and it strained a friendship.

I got angry and didn’t want to start a fight, so I didn’t talk to my travel partner for a couple of days on the trip. Talk about uncomfortable and awkward! It’s a shame, too, as we had a good time before then.

How to Find a Good Travel Partner

Finding a travel buddy can be challenging, and finding a good one is even more challenging. Before you consider joining a person on a trip, it’s essential to consider your wants and expectations.

Talk about them with your potential travel partner to see if you align. When you get frustrated, as you invariably may at some point in the trip, step back and consider if you are a good travel partner.

Think about how you can open a dialogue to work through the issue so you can continue to have fun.

What GAFFL Users Are Saying

Marie

"It’s really nice to have a platform like GAFFL with lots of travelers wanting to do the same as you, a real beautiful cultural exchange. You can meet people so easily and in a trustful way. We were four girls, from French, German and American backgrounds, without knowing each other from before. We spent an amazing week together, 2000km driving, camping on the way. We saw kangaroos, koalas, penguins and pelicans"

Saed

“I have found GAFFL to be an amazing tool for finding similar minded travel partners to embark on an adventure. Through GAFFL, I had organized a trip to Mexico City last month and Quazi joined the trip from Victoria, BC. We spent 14 days of straight exploring, hiking, eating and drinking. Quite an amazing experience - all thanks to GAFFL!”

Scarlett

"I accidentally scrolled across GAFFL and I'm so pleased I did. I met Amaia and immediately decided to road-trip together. We're spending 10 days together and it's great because we have so much in common. Couldn't have done it without GAFFL helping us find one another! It has honestly made NZ so much cheaper to explore as I get to split the costs with someone too"

Were you looking forward to a trip with your friends, only to find out that they had backed out last minute? Wondering how to find a travel companion online? Even if your family and friends' schedules don't match yours, your vacation doesn't have to be ruined because of it. GAFFL can help you to find the perfect travel companion for your next adventure.

The best way to find a travel buddy on GAFFL is to search for your desired destination and browse through thousands of user-generated trips created by solo travelers around the world.

travel companion example

A good travel companion is someone who has a similar itinerary to you. It's also someone you think you'll get along with.

Every user on GAFFL has a profile where they list their interests. If you and your potential trip mate share some common interests, it’ll make your trip go a lot smoother.

It's also important to have a similar budget in mind. If your travel companion wants to do more activities and eat at expensive restaurants but you can’t afford it, it can lead to an unpleasant trip for the both of you.

When browsing trips on GAFFL, make sure to read through the trip details to learn more about the trip and determine if the activities are something you want to do and can afford.

If you like a trip on GAFFL, simply click 'Connect,' and you'll be able to chat with your travel buddy right away. If you have your own travel plans, you can start your own trip and others can request to connect with you!

Finding the right travel companion online can be difficult for solo travelers. GAFFL, on the other hand, makes it very simple. Use our world-class real-time messaging system to get to know your potential travel partner. Chat with them to see if they'd be a good travel companion for you, and then plan together, meet up with your travel buddy, and start exploring together.

travel companion example

GAFFL is the best website/app for solo travelers looking for travel companions online because we prioritize our travelers' trust and safety. Our multi-step verification process includes social media, phone number, and a valid government ID, so you can be confident in your potential travel companion. With adventurers from over 190 countries, you can connect, chat, and find the perfect travel buddy to meet up with on GAFFL.

I think this is a fabulous idea because the things that can get expensive while solo traveling can usually also be easily split between people. If you aren’t a hostel fan, it would be awesome to have people to split hotels and Airbnb with.

If car rental is the cheapest way to get around a destination, it would be ideal to have others to split the costs with. But most importantly it always makes the experience that much more memorable when you have new friends to share it with.

Solo travel is great. But there are some times that I do not recommend someone travel solo and where I personally try my hardest not to travel solo. Some examples of this relate to safety, like hiking a trail that doesn’t have many people walking it each day, or being in certain destinations where I’ve heard from others that it’s difficult as a solo female.

Other examples relate to expenses, like taking a road trip and renting a car. Situations like these are where I think something like GAFFL is a great idea. With GAFFL, you can find a group to go on that hike with or split that car rental with!

One of the things that hold people back is that they don’t have a partner or a best friend to travel with and they feel scared and uncertain to travel alone, especially long-term. GAFFL helps with that!

Another thing that holds people back is the perceived cost of travel. While travel doesn’t have to be expensive, it’s always more affordable when you can share the cost of accommodation and groceries with someone else. Again, GAFFL provides a solution for that!

We truly believe that the best memories and experiences are the ones that are shared with others. It doesn’t matter if you’ve known someone for an hour or your whole life, when you do something badass together it’s sure to be a time you won’t forget.

Making connections and becoming friends with people all over the world is such a powerful tool to have when traveling. One day maybe you’ll visit your new friend in their homeland. Some of the best trips happen when you have a friend playing tour guide in their country.

GAFFL is a really cool opportunity to enrich your travels with like-minded people who will push you to get out of your comfort zone. No matter what type of personality you have, making new friends on the road is easier than ever.

I think GAFFL plays a role by allowing solo travelers to find travel buddies when needed. Though solo travel is a great way to travel, there are some experiences that are better enjoyed with more people (some don’t even allow for solo).

Friends and families are not always available to travel with, and sometimes the interests do not align for travel. Or sometimes you just want to socialize while still being solo most of the time. I think GAFFL helps solve these problems.

Wander Without Worries: Why You Need a Travel Companion and Where to Find the Perfect One

Embark on unforgettable adventures as we reveal the secret to worry-free travel: the perfect companion . Discover the key to worry-free travel with a perfect travel companion. Uncover the benefits, from safety to unforgettable memories. Find out where to find your ideal adventure partner and wander without worries.

Travel Companion

Benefits of traveling with a companion

While solo travel can be a rewarding experience, having a companion can take your journey to the next level. With a travel buddy by your side, you’ll enjoy enhanced safety, an extra set of eyes to navigate unfamiliar territories, and valuable support to help you feel at ease.

But the benefits don’t end there. Sharing experiences with a companion can lead to a deeper connection with the destination and a more vibrant journey. From discovering hidden gems to immersing in local customs, having a companion can make every moment more meaningful and exciting.

And let’s not forget the potential for new friendships. Overcoming challenges, sharing moments, and creating unforgettable memories together can foster companionship and lead to lifelong connections. So why not consider traveling with a companion on your next adventure?

Reasons to Hire a travel companion

Solo travel can be a thrilling adventure, but hiring a travel companion can take your journey to the next level. Here are just a few reasons why hiring a companion can enhance your travel experience:

Provide added security, comfort, and support

A travel companion can make solo travel less intimidating. With a trusted partner by your side, anxiety is eased, emotional strength is bolstered, and exploring unfamiliar destinations becomes more enjoyable and fulfilling.

Enhance your cultural immersion

With local insights, language assistance, shared experiences, and cross-cultural exchange, you can gain a deeper understanding of the destination’s culture and create meaningful connections during your travels.

Overcoming language barriers

Hiring a travel companion who speaks the local language can enable smooth communication, authentic interactions, and a deeper cultural understanding, making for a richer and more rewarding travel experience. For example, if you’re planning to travel in Montreal, hiring a  French tutor in Montreal  is like having a language wingman, ensuring you can chat, order poutine, and connect with locals effortlessly. With a language tutor as your travel sidekick, every moment becomes a chance to connect, laugh, and truly immerse yourself in the heart of a new culture.

How to find a travel companion

Finding a travel companion can be challenging, but there are several ways to increase your chances of success.

Travel Companion

One way is to join reputable travel groups and create a detailed post that outlines your travel plans, interests, and expectations. Engage with others who share your passion for travel and actively participate in these communities to increase your chances of finding a compatible travel companion. Social media can also be a useful tool for finding a travel buddy. Share your plans, use relevant hashtags, reach out to friends, join travel groups, respond to companion posts, and consider using travel companion apps . Engaging with these platforms increases your chances of finding a suitable travel companion. You can also consider hiring a travel companion through a luxury travel companionship agency . These agencies provide companionship-only services and offer trained professionals who can accompany you on your journey. While this option may be more expensive, it can provide added comfort, security, and peace of mind during your travels.

By utilizing these methods, you can connect with potential companions and increase your chances of finding a suitable travel buddy, creating unforgettable memories on your journey.

Hiring a female travel companion

Traveling can be a wonderful experience, but it can also be challenging at times, so it’s important to prepare and communicate effectively to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. Traveling with a female companion offers enhanced safety and security, shared experiences and perspectives, increased comfort and support, collaborative decision-making, empowerment, camaraderie, and cultural sensitivity. It creates a unique bond and enriches the travel experience through companionship and understanding.

To find a female travel companion for hire, research reputable travel companion services that specialize in providing female companions. Specify your requirements, review profiles and reviews, conduct interviews, and prioritize safety measures to ensure a suitable and reliable travel companion for your journey.

When hiring a female travel companion, prioritize safety by researching the service, reviewing safety protocols, asking for references, and considering background checks to ensure a secure travel experience.

Travel Companion

Enhancing Your Travel Experience with a Companion

Traveling with a companion offers many advantages, including increased safety, shared expenses, cultural immersion, language support, emotional support , and the opportunity to create new friendships and memorable experiences, all contributing to a more enjoyable and fulfilling travel journey.

Don’t let the fear of traveling alone hold you back from unforgettable adventures. Explore the benefits of having a travel companion and start planning your next trip today!

When looking for a travel partner, it’s essential to create an appealing and informative profile to attract like-minded travel buddies. A well-structured profile can make it easier for potential friends to understand your interests and preferences, facilitating better connections.

To start, include a clear and recent profile picture that shows your face. This allows potential travel partners to recognize you and helps build trust. Additionally, provide some basic personal information, such as your age, gender, and current location. Sharing these demographics can assist others in determining if they’d be a suitable travel buddy for you.

Clear and honest communication helps to prevent misunderstandings and disagreements during the trip.

Moreover, it’s wise to meet your travel companion in person before committing to the trip. If you cannot meet in person, consider having a video call to better gauge their personality and intentions.

Dividing Expenses and Budgeting with travel mates

When planning a trip with travel buddies, it’s important to discuss and agree on how to divide expenses and create a budget. A clear understanding of shared costs can make the trip more enjoyable and stress-free for everyone involved. Here are a few guidelines to help manage expenses efficiently:

Firstly, determine the major expenses, such as accommodation, transportation, and guided tours. It’s crucial to decide whether to book individual or shared hotel rooms, as this will significantly impact the overall budget. If you opt for shared rooms, make sure everyone is comfortable with the arrangement. For transportation expenses, discuss if you prefer a running tab for taxis and tours or pay individually.

Next, create a trip budget that includes all anticipated costs. Be transparent about individual budget preferences and ensure everyone is on the same page. A shared budget spreadsheet can help keep track of expenses and allow everyone to contribute their fair share.

When it comes to daily expenses, such as food, entertainment, and attractions, set boundaries on what will be considered shared costs and what each person will cover individually. Establish a system to track these expenses, either by using an app or keeping a travel expense journal.

One smart technique to avoid confusion and disputes over shared expenses is using a splitting feature in some apps like Airbnb and Uber. This feature lets multiple people pay their portion directly, eliminating the need to reimburse each other later.

Throughout the trip, communicate openly with your travel buddies about expenses. If any unforeseen costs arise, address them in a timely manner and decide how to handle them as a group. This will make the trip smoother and more enjoyable for everyone.

Overall, dividing expenses and budgeting play a vital role in ensuring a successful and stress-free trip with travel buddies. By addressing these matters in advance, you can create a positive experience and lasting memories together.

Choosing the Right Travel Buddies

When embarking on an adventure, finding a compatible travel companion is essential for a successful and enjoyable trip. A crucial consideration is each travel partner’s individual travel style. It’s critical to ensure that your travel preferences align in terms of budget, pace, destination, and interests. Sharing the same priorities can make or break your travel experience together.

Another aspect to contemplate is the gender of your travel partner. Deciding on the basis if you prefer to travel with the same or opposite gender can help you to feel comfortable and secure on your journey. Consider talking openly about your preferences and boundaries, as this will help both of you to create a harmonious environment throughout your trip.

Identifying the perfect travel buddy involves evaluating your personalities, social habits, and communication styles. Open and honest communication between travel partners is vital to express your needs, handle conflicts, and reach compromises. Traveling with someone who shares your adventurous spirit will further enhance your time together. Remember, a considerate and respectful travel companion can make even the most challenging situations more manageable.

In conclusion, to choose the ideal travel partner, evaluate the aspects of travel style, gender, and personalities. Ensuring compatibility in these areas will result in a more enjoyable, relaxing, and rewarding journey. Forge strong connections with your travel buddies, as shared memories can become lifelong friendships. Make informed decisions, and be open to the incredible experiences that await you and your travel companion.

How to Travel Long-Term with a Companion (Without Killing Each Other)

Because travel is so much better when everyone survives the journey.

When you think about long-term travel, you might like to have a travel partner for the whole trip or just part of the trip. It can get lonely when you’re travelling for a long time, and having a special friend or loved one with you can make it much easier.

Vagabondish is reader-supported. When you buy through links on our site, we may earn a small affiliate commission. Read our disclosure .

But being on the road also means putting that relationship to the test. Friend or romantic partner, sibling or travel companion — at some point, you’ll want to scream at each other or worse. So before you find yourself nose-to-nose with someone you now hate , trapped in a small tent on a rainy night when you can’t walk away, ask yourself these questions …

Do We Have Compatible Interests?

It’s not entirely necessary to have the same interests, but they should be easily combined or shared.

For example, if you like art and culture and she likes to go on hikes, taking a history walk could keep both of you happy and feeling like the day was well-spent. But if he is a party animal who loves night clubs and staying out late, and you like to camp out and be reading in your tent by 8 p.m, things could be difficult to mix.

Of course, you could always do separate activities during the day, but then it would be like travelling alone.

Can They Respect Different Opinions, New Beliefs + Foreign Cultures?

Some people are judgmental about other countries. Some believe in the superiority of their own kind. Some people are not comfortable when confronted with certain cultural differences. If your travel companion is not respectful of those differences, it’ll make your travel much less enjoyable and could land you in a few tight spots.

Also, they often won’t respect your feelings if you voice a different opinion from theirs, and that alone is a recipe for disaster.

Silhouette of a Couple Standing Together

Would I Be Able to Depend on Them in Trouble?

Picture this: you’re stuck on a highway one night, with rain pouring down, staring at a flat tire and nobody around for miles.

Or this: your bags are stolen and you’ve lost your passports and money.

Now picture your companion: are they flapping around helplessly, crying or being a liability in general? Or are they standing right beside you, being resourceful and staying calm? You know the answer to this one.

What Is Their Confrontation Style?

There’s bound to be a fight when you travel. If not with each other, then with a rogue taxi driver, street hawker, hotel owner, someone at the airport — the list goes on. You can’t dictate how your companion reacts, and sometimes (especially if you’re the calmer, quieter one), it helps to have someone aggressive on your team. If you know what to expect from a person under pressure, you’re both better equipped to handle a situation.

Would We Be Able to Split Tasks Up + Help Each Other Out?

You might prefer washing dishes to setting up a tent, while they might like to plan a day instead of manage the money. Everyone on a trip has to be willing to pitch in and pull their weight.

Don’t travel with someone who can’t make adjustments and isn’t willing to lend a hand. Just don’t . You’ll feel petty asking someone to wash their damn tea cup every day, but it’ll be the one thing that really bugs you on a trip.

Walking Together in Seattle

What Kind of Travel Would They Be Comfortable With?

You might have someone who meets all the criteria of the “perfect companion”. But if their idea of travel is different from the trip you’re planning, they’ll be uncomfortable and stressed out most of the time. Making sure everyone knows what to expect before the trip begins means less surprises along the way, for them and for you.

Are YOU Willing to Make Adjustments?

Having the ideal travel companion is as important as being one yourself.

Having the ideal travel companion is as important as being one yourself. Consider your own style of travel before you choose to travel with someone.

If you prefer your own company and find it hard to be patient around people, you might want to try solo travel . But make sure to hold yourself to the same standards to which you hold your companion.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to remember is that everyone has a unique style and their own personal strengths. Everyone also has a limit to which they can smile, be social and patient. If you time it right, all you need to keep the peace is a small break or time-out. Give each other some space and take off to do your own thing.

At the end of the day, you want to feel happy to see each other and lucky that you’re travelling with someone who is special to you.

All of these are good points. I guess it helps that we have been married for 31 years, but we had to learn to get along in close quarters too.

Travel is a surefire way to test your compatibility together! To be honest, I think a lot of it is about pure chemistry.

Thankfully, my girlfriend and I can travel pretty much indefinitely without killing each other (yet =P).

I have been traveling with my ex wasn’t so successful he drink a lot and smoked weed constantly, plus had no money but didn’t want to rough it. I want to go traveling but would rather have company, none of my friends are in a position to do so, any ideas how I can meet a like minded person to travel with that is financially able to contribute, would like to house sit, workaway too along the way. Thanks

I have traveled long enough with my wife and agree that compatibility is important. Also tolerance and respect, there are times when we disagree and still have a good time.

I agree on some points, HAHAHA. I mostly travel with my husband. sometimes we agree or disagree on the same point. but one thing that is important or which we learnt is mutual understanding. without it long term travel isn’t possible

As someone about to embark on long term travel with my husband, I couldn’t say I’m not a little bit nervous about it! Thanks for the useful tips!

Really it is very special to have a Companion while Travelling. You can share your thoughts, feelings and express yourself with your partner. It may be anyone like Life partner, Siblings etc. It really Thrilling and enjoyable while traveling with your partner. Thanks for posting such a Lovely Blog.

How to Choose a Travel Partner

Last Updated: February 13, 2022 References

This article was co-authored by Lorenzo Garriga . Lorenzo is a time-tested globe-trotter, who has been traveling the world on a shoestring for almost 30 years with a backpack. Hailing from France, he has been all over the world, working in hostels, washing dishes, and hitchhiking his way across countries and continents. There are 7 references cited in this article, which can be found at the bottom of the page. This article has been viewed 36,070 times.

Traveling solo gives you the freedom to create your own schedule and do as you please. But traveling with a partner has its benefits, too. For example, a travel partner can provide moral support and celebrate in the rewards of firsthand experience with unfamiliar locations and cultures. To ensure that a travel partner is one who can add value to your journey, choose someone who has similar travel preferences and personality characteristics. There are several steps you can take to find a travel partner who will enhance your journey.

Picking a Compatible Travel Partner

Step 1 Look for someone with common interests.

  • Think about your travel priorities. Make a list of all of your "must dos".
  • For example, maybe you are planning a trip to France. If visiting The Louvre is a priority, make sure your travel partner wants to go, too.
  • Remember that you don't have to do all of the activities together. But when you travel with someone, it is fun to do at least some things with each other.

Step 2 Consider energy levels.

  • Think about what type of trip you want to have. Are you looking forward to walking a lot? Do you plan to be doing a lot of physical activities, such as scuba diving?
  • If you anticipate being active, try to look for a friend who enjoys being active. Maybe your pal from the gym would be a good choice.
  • Likewise, if you plan to chill, take that into account. If you want to spend your days relaxing on the beach, you don't want a travel partner who will be constantly nagging you to get moving.

Step 3 Discuss financial plans.

  • Before traveling with a friend, make sure that you are on the same page concerning money. You don't want to be planning an expensive getaway at the same time your friend is looking for budget travel.
  • Try asking specific questions. You can say, "How much do you think we should spend on a hotel each night?"
  • You can also plan a budget together. Say, "Let's sit down and work out how much we want to spend per day."

Step 4 Have an honest conversation.

  • Schedule a time to sit down and talk. Try saying, "I know we've talked hypothetically about traveling through Europe together. Let's have coffee this week and actually talk that through."
  • Be upfront. If there is something about you that your friend needs to know, go a head and share that.
  • For example, you might need to say, "I'm a nervous flyer. Is there anything I should know about traveling with you?"

Step 5 Find someone who is flexible.

  • Choose a travel partner who can adjust. You don't want to be stuck with someone who declares the whole trip ruined if you have to adjust plans.
  • Travel with a friend who is pretty easygoing. Do you have a buddy who is willing to go out for sushi, even if you'd planned on having pizza? That person might be easy to get along with.
  • Make sure that you're flexible, too. Remember that you're on vacation to relax and have fun. Try to just go with the flow if you have to change your agenda.

Meeting a New Travel Partner

Step 1 Talk to a friend of a friend.

  • Ask your friends if they know anyone who wants to travel with you. For example, maybe your friend has a cousin who has always wanted to take an Alaskan cruise, just like the one you are planning.
  • Use social media to make connections. Make a post looking for a travel partner, tagging multiple friends. That way, their friends will see your post, too.
  • Make sure to try to meet your new travel partner in person before your trip. If that's not possible, correspond by e-mail or phone and get to know one another.

Step 2 Stay at a hostel.

  • A hostel is a great place to meet new friends. These inexpensive lodgings are very common in Europe.
  • Staying at a hostel is often a communal experience. Make some reservations to stay at various hostels, and get ready to meet your fellow travelers.
  • Connect with a new group of people. If you meet some people that you get along with, ask if you can go along with them to the next city.

Step 3 Find a gap year program.

  • Gap year travel is very common among Europeans. It is becoming increasingly popular in the United States.
  • Search the internet for a study abroad program. Based on your interests, you will be placed with a group of like-minded travelers.
  • Try using a reputable website such as Go Overseas. They have options for short and long trips, with a variety of locations and objectives.

Step 4 Join a travel group.

  • Web sites such as Globe Trooper offer many traveler designed trips. You can use their site to meet other people who want to visit great ski resorts in Europe.
  • These sites offer a variety of trips. Make sure to look for ones planned by people who share your interests.
  • When you are traveling with a group of new people, the same rules apply as when you travel with a friend. Make sure you have the same interests, energy level, and financial plans.

Making the Most of Your Trip

Step 1 Do your research.

  • Before you travel, take some time to do your research. Start by reading reviews.
  • Read traveler reviews of every place you plan to stay. You want to know if other people experienced big problems like the heat not working or the doors not locking.
  • Use a site like Trip Advisor. They post multiple reviews for every aspect of traveling. [5] X Research source

Step 2 Manage your expectations.

  • Try not to get upset if something goes wrong. For example, don't consider the whole trip ruined if one of your adventures gets rained out.
  • Plan to have a good time. But be ready to laugh it off if something unexpectedly goes awry.
  • Maybe you're traveling in New York, and the restaurant lost your reservation. That's disappointing, but it's also a great excuse to try a slice of famous NYC pizza.

Step 3 Disconnect from technology.

  • Don't check social media multiple times a day. Try to enjoy your own experiences.
  • Focus on being in the moment. Look around at your surroundings, and find somewhere new to explore.
  • Relax and enjoy. Make an effort to forget about work and responsibilities. You're on vacation! [8] X Research source

People start thinking about their retirement bucket list and how to travel with companionship as they retire. The wrinkle in travel for seniors came when COVID-19 forced many older adults to re-think or cancel their plans. Even now, COVID and vaccination requirements can complicate the most well-laid plans. Older adults are the most vaccinated group in the US and feel more confident about traveling now.

Jump ahead to these sections:

What is a senior traveling companion, and what do they do, how much does a senior traveling companion cost, pros and cons of senior traveling companions, how to find a senior traveling companion for you or a loved one.

The senior travel industry is rebounding. Travel agencies that cater to older adults reported significant increases in bookings in 2021. As eager as older adults are to take to the roads and airways, safety, access to medical care if needed, and companionship are top of mind. People are living longer, and as the average age of a senior traveler increases, so does the desire for protection and guidance. Many seniors refuse to let their physical conditions prevent them from traveling.

Senior traveling companion services are an excellent option for single or partnered older adults who want the security of another person or group to accompany them. In cases where someone requires hands-on assistance, a companion is a necessity. You may not have considered this option before, but after learning more about a senior traveling companion, you might decide this service is just the ticket to the grand vacation you have been dreaming of.

A senior traveling companion is someone who can be younger and accompany a senior on a trip as a professional planner, tour guide, or caregiver. Or a senior traveling companion is another older adult or group of adults who travel to the same destination together.  Each category of companion will have different tasks and motivations.

Travel buddy or companion

A travel buddy is paired with you for similar interests and destinations. A travel buddy or companion service will:

  • Allow you to pair with a preferred travel companion. Some services are similar to dating sites where you can designate gender, duration, location of trips, etc.
  • You can contact the people you think are compatible to discuss and decide whether to travel together.
  • A travel buddy service is for singles, couples, and groups.
  • Using a travel companion service is not necessary. You can use word of mouth, the local senior center, or a social media shout-out for a buddy to travel with.

Travel planner

Plenty of senior travel planners will plan your trip and find others to join. A travel planning service will be more expensive since they handle all travel details. A senior travel planner will:

  • Offer a wide selection of cultural and adventure trips to suit any physical level. Many of these trips will be local and others international with varying lengths and expenses.
  • A travel planner will plan every detail, from flight itineraries, hotels, rental car arrangements, daytime activities, and the number of people on the trip.
  • Some travel planners will not only plan your trip but find a suitable companion for the one you want to take.
  • Travel planners will investigate all vaccination requirements and ensure you comply with local health laws.

Senior travel clubs

Senior travel clubs are groups of seniors who pay membership fees to the club and get vacation packages at bulk rates. Travel clubs specialize in everything from active adventures to academic and cultural trips. Of note are reports of scam travel clubs, so vet any travel club carefully to ensure they are legitimate.

Medical and transit companion

Many older travelers have medical problems, cognitive impairment, or mobility issues. In these cases, a senior can hire someone to travel with them to assist with the trip and care needs. Assistance can consist of:

  • Managing medications
  • Helping with bathing and dressing
  • Checking vital signs
  • Find health services at your destination.
  • Handling any durable medical equipment needs

The cost of a senior traveling companion depends entirely on the type of service you want and need. If you simply want to book through a tour agency that caters to seniors, you will pay your portion of the trip, and the other travelers will pay theirs. Most travel group plans offer a discount if you share a room. If you are going through a service to find traveling companions, there will be a membership fee to find compatible travel buddies.

For seniors who want to hire someone to accompany them on their travels, the cost will depend on the tasks required. ZipRecruiter esports that the average hourly pay for a travel companion in 2022 was $27.89 an hour. This hourly cost can be significantly higher if more assistance is needed, especially if a nurse accompanies you on a trip. You will also likely need to pay for all their trip costs, including airfare, meals, other transport, and tourist entrance fees.

Senior traveling companions can be a terrific option, but you will want to consider some additional details before taking the plunge. Let’s review some of the pros and cons of a traveling companion.

Pros of a senior traveling companion

  • The primary reason people choose a traveling companion through an agency is the convenience of paying someone else to do all the planning, which puts less stress on you. A senior traveling companion program can handle as many or as few travel details as you want.
  • The opportunity to meet new people and form friendships
  • Another benefit of a senior traveling companion is the safety and security of having a companion with you at all times.  Also, an itinerary tailored to your comfort level where there are few surprises can provide a sense of security to many travelers.
  • The assurance that someone will take care of your care needs.
  • A senior traveling companion allows you to explore destinations and things to do in retirement that you may not have considered before.

Cons of a senior traveling companion

A traveling companion is not for everyone, and it may not be possible even for those who prefer a companion. You may not find anyone you feel comfortable with, or the cost is too high.

  • The cost of a senior traveling companion can be prohibitive, especially if you need and want a companion to take care of your medical needs. Even in programs where everyone pays their costs, the pricing will be higher than if you planned the trip yourself. The do-it-yourself programs where you pay a fee to find a compatible traveling companion and do all the planning yourself are probably the most affordable.
  • The appeal of having everything organized for you is the very aspect of a traveling companion that some people don’t like. There could be a lack of travel flexibility. Many travelers prefer the unpredictability and spontaneous nature of unorganized travel. Finding themselves on a trip where they wish to change the itinerary is a downside for those folks.
  • The whole idea of a senior traveling companion is to have company on a trip and have someone to share the experience. But there is always the possibility of incompatibility, and you won’t find out until you are on your way. Sharing a room with a senior traveling companion is usually less expensive, but you give up privacy.
  • There is the possibility that you book an active travel trip that turns out to be too challenging. When you are with a group, you don’t have the option of scaling back the activity level.

Finding a senior traveling companion for you or your loved one could be lengthy, depending on what you are looking for. You may be surprised by all of the group travel options for seniors. If you or a loved one is looking for a companion that will provide more personal care as a senior travel companion, you will need to vet the company and the companion. Consider these questions:

  • What experience does the companion have, and on what types of trips?
  • Can you provide references for the specific companion that will come on the trip?
  • What are your safety protocols?
  • Are your companions CPR and first aid certified?
  • What insurance options are there through your company, and what does it cover?
  • How do you communicate with other family members during the trip?

If you are looking for travel companies, reviewing choices online might be best. One feature to consider is if you are looking for an “active” vacation which could entail hiking, biking, and walking. Most legitimate companies will have a guide to the activity level for each trip so you don’t overextend your physical capabilities.

Perhaps a river cruise or more extensive cruise is more up your alley. Or your interests may be more cultural or academic. Try and narrow your interests so you don’t waste time investigating companies that don’t offer what you want.

Other ideas for finding people locally to accompany you and others on trips are Meetup , senior centers, and Facebook. The other possibility is to reach out to friends who might have an interest in traveling together. If you find one or more people willing to travel and can agree on a place, a travel agent can make as many arrangements as you want.

A Senior Traveling Companion

A senior traveling companion can be a great way to access travel and adventure safely.  The key to a successful experience is to be open to a new travel companion while choosing your trip wisely. Accept that no trip or companion is perfect but that the journey will likely be one you will remember.

A comprehensive questionnaire to help choose a compatible travel partner

by Anne Betts | Feb 1, 2022 | Other Travel Tips | 4 comments

travel-partner-compatibility-questionnairer

Selecting a compatible travel partner is serious business. It’s not enough that you both enjoy travel, want to visit the same place, and are looking for a travelling companion.

This is Part 2 of a two-part post. Part 1 offers tips on How to choose a compatible travelling companion . This piece, Part 2, suggests questions that could be posed to a potential travel buddy to determine compatibility.

Table of Contents

Incompatibility puts a trip at risk

Personal data, travel experience / goals, research and planning, personality traits, interests / activities, pace of travel, accommodation, day / night / time.

There are different approaches to experiencing the gift of travel. Some people take whirlwind trips through world capitals, taking photographs of themselves in front of recognizable landmarks, posting to social media as they go. If this sounds like your type of trip, you and your travelling companion must enjoy this style and pace of travel.

It’s too late once you’ve embarked on your travels to learn that your travel partner tries to pack as much as possible into every day while you prefer a much slower pace. Or you discover on arrival that your travelling companion is a recovering alcoholic, so the wine tasting experiences you were so looking forward to are now off the agenda. What if your new travel buddy arrives with three large suitcases that don’t fit into the compact car you both agreed to rent? Or your partner loves to go clubbing at night, and you’re an early-to-bed and early-to-rise person whose travel day starts much earlier than theirs.

These differences can be sources of regret and conflict, as described in Horror stories: travelling with the wrong person in Part 1: How to choose a compatible travelling companion .

Travel partner compatibility questionnaire

One of the best ways to determine compatibility is to ask the right questions.

The following questions, loosely clustered in categories, are offered as a resource. The questionnaire isn’t meant to be sent to a potential travel mate. Nor is it expected that every question needs to be asked. Rather, the questions are offered as ideas to inspire how you might structure a dialogue in a way that meets your needs. Choose or adapt the ones you’re comfortable asking and be as detailed or as cursory as it takes to determine compatibility.

It might help if you explain that it is not your intent to pry or judge. The purpose is to determine if you’ll be compatible as travelling companions.

It’s your trip; life is too short, and vacation time and finances are too scarce to share them with the ‘wrong’ person.

  • What’s your age / approximate age?
  • Do you have a significant other? (Are you travelling to find romance?)
  • Are you in the workforce? What is/was your job?

  • What’s your citizenship? Does your passport have at least six months validity?
  • Do you have trusted traveller status? Which program(s)?

My best friend and I share many interests, but we both know that a trip together would ruin the friendship. She’s an early riser, punctual and a scheduler. I’m the opposite, laid back, spontaneous. A friend of my mom’s was fascinated by my mom’s tales of her travels, even though they were always at all inclusive resorts. My mom took her on the next trip and it was disastrous. The lady had no travel experience at all and was reluctant to leave the hotel, sometimes wouldn’t even leave the room.

Anne Betts

At least you’re both aware of each other’s characteristics that would put you on a collision course if you travelled together. It’s surprising how many people jump in without assessing the differences (or finding out what they might be). Good on you for wanting to preserve the friendship by not going on a trip together. Thank you for your comment, Carole. All the best.

Jeannie

This is absolutely brilliant, thank you for compiling this! I think it could be adapted into a great tool for couples or families to use in advance of a vacation to maximize the chances of a successful trip.

Thank you, Jeannie. I hope it offers ideas for folks to develop their own questions and discussion points depending on the people and circumstances. Cheers.

Your companion, in this case, is solely for companionship, can also make travel arrangements and update your family from time to time. With this type of companion, you get a partner to enjoy all your adventures with.

You can also get an assistance travel companion whose primary purpose is to make your trip as comfortable as possible. They can pick you up from your home, help you pack up your suitcase and drive you to the airport. If you like, they can also travel with you abroad and assist you throughout your journey. With these types of companions, you get to enjoy maximum flexibility.

Another common type of travel companion is a medical travel companion, whose primary responsibility is to look after your well-being, which is especially crucial for patients with medical conditions. The same goes for other types of travel companions. You can always do a background check to find out if they qualify. Also, remember to check their experience. It’s always better to go with someone with years of experience than just starting out.

Score a Southwest Companion Pass With Just One Round-trip Flight — but You'll Have to Book Soon

The offer is running until tomorrow night and is valid for travel from Aug. 5 through Oct. 2

Grab a friend and get ready to hit the skies by scoring one of Southwest Airlines’ limited-time Companion Passes, available by flying just one roundtrip flight.

The promotional passes, which allow travelers to designate one person to fly with them practically for free, are available to members of Southwest’s Rapid Rewards program who register for the promotion online and purchase one qualifying Southwest revenue flight by 11:59 p.m. CT on March 27, according to the airline . To qualify, travelers must book either a roundtrip flight or two one-way flights and must take off by May 22.

Customers who score a companion pass with the promotion can then designate a companion to travel with them from Aug. 5 through Oct. 2. Travelers can choose to change their designated companion up to three times with the promotional Companion Pass.

“We know the Companion Pass is a favorite perk of our Rapid Rewards program, and we're thrilled to bring back this promotion for a limited time so that Customers can experience why this popular benefit is so meaningful," Jonathan Clarkson, vice president of marketing at Southwest, said in a statement. "We invite our Customers to take advantage of this offer because traveling with your favorite Companion supports sharing of adventures and creating memories that can last a lifetime."

The Companion Pass allows holders to designate one companion to fly with them nearly for free , simply paying taxes and fees for each flight, which start at $5.60 each way. Typically, travelers can earn a Companion Pass by either flying 100 qualifying one-way flights or earning 135,000 qualifying points in a calendar year (which they can do by using a qualifying credit card, staying at partner hotels, and more).

The latest Companion Pass promotion comes on the heels of Southwest’s plans to start red-eye flights sometime in the next two years. It also follows the airline’s decision to redesign its cabins for 2025 featuring ( controversial ) slimmer new seats , adjustable headrests, and larger under-seat space.

Don't fly alone. Here's how Southwest's Companion Pass lets you bring a buddy for free.

travel companion example

Southwest Airlines is running a promotion to let Rapid Rewards members earn a Companion Pass more easily.

With the pass, qualifying travelers can bring a designated buddy with them for free on any trip between Aug. 5 and Oct. 2.

Normally, to earn a Companion Pass, Southwest frequent flyers need to fly 100 one-way flights in a year or earn 135,000 qualifying points. These points can be accumulated through flight purchases or eligible spending on Southwest-branded credit cards or with program partners.

Under the promotion, all travelers have to do to qualify is register on Southwest’s website and purchase one round-trip or two one-way flights.

“We know the Companion Pass is a favorite perk of our Rapid Rewards program, and we’re thrilled to bring back this promotion for a limited time so that customers can experience why this popular benefit is so meaningful,” Jonathan Clarkson, Vice President Marketing at Southwest Airlines said in a statement. “We invite our customers to take advantage of this offer because traveling with your favorite companion supports sharing of adventures and creating memories that can last a lifetime.”

Cruising Altitude: Listening to music on a plane without headphones? Jail time!

To earn the promotional Companion Pass, travelers must purchase their qualifying flights by Wednesday, and travel must take place by May 22 after registering for the deal.

Promotional Companion Pass holders can change their designated companion up to three times during the eligibility period. Full terms and conditions of the deal are available here on Southwest’s website .

Southwest to bring back its buddy pass to fly a friend for free

O nce reserved exclusively for flight attendants and other air crew, the idea of choosing a "designated traveler" who can travel with you for free is increasingly being explored by airlines as a way to bring in customers (and get them to spend more.)

In February 2024, Southwest Airlines  ( LUV )  announced that those who sign up for Chase Bank  ( JPM ) 's Southwest Rapid Rewards Consumer Credit Card and spend $4,000 in the first three months would be able to get the "Companion Pass" that it formerly reserved to those who took 100 flights a year or amassed 135,000 miles with the airline.

Related: An airline just launched a new way to fly a friend for free

The promotion, which lets the pass holder pick a friend to accompany them on any flight they take while paying only airport taxes that usually amount to about $10-$20, was available until March 11. It proved popular enough that, two weeks after the last day to sign up passed, Southwest brought back the offer.

Southwest Airlines: 'This popular benefit is so meaningful'

This time, the promotion takes even less to get but needs to be jumped on fast. Members of Southwest's Rapid Rewards loyalty program need to buy a qualifying flight (either one round trip or two one-way fares) by the end of March 27, 2024. After completing the flight by May 22, the customer can then pick a designated companion who can join them on any new flight they book between August 5 and October 2.

  • The 10 best airline stocks to buy now
  • Airlines see a new kind of traveler at the front of the plane

"We know the Companion Pass is a favorite perk of our Rapid Rewards program, and we're thrilled to bring back this promotion for a limited time so that Customers can experience why this popular benefit is so meaningful," Southwest VP of Marketing Jonathan Clarkson said in a statement. "We invite our Customers to take advantage of this offer because traveling with your favorite Companion supports sharing of adventures and creating memories that can last a lifetime."

There are certain conditions, including paying for the flights with cash instead of miles and picking from flights within a designated period. Those who want a Companion Pass valid for an entire year can still do this by taking over 100 flights or spending the qualifying amount with Southwest.

This other airline offers a pass for family members

While few airlines offer a similar type of buddy pass to customers, Frontier Airlines  ( FRON )  has experimented with expanding its all-you-can-fly GoWild! Pass for children. It also allows frequent flyers who pay for its Discount Den membership to bring a child younger than 14 for free on certain flights they take.

The two-for-one promotion is more common for kids more so than adults — at the end of 2023, South African Airways also held a sale in which parents could bring kids aged two to 11 for free on certain flights.

"Since launching the GoWild! Pass earlier this month, we’ve received countless requests to include children in the program," Frontier Vice President of Marketing Tyri Squyres said in March 2022. "We've been hard at work building the program infrastructure to make that happen and are now thrilled to expand the program to include children, who can now enjoy the unlimited flight benefits GoWild! offers, along with their parents."

As women's hoops grows, scrutiny increases on NCAA hosts to manage hotel offerings, travel times

Ncaa e washington oregon st basketball.

Eastern Washington savored the thrill of claiming a Big Sky Conference Tournament title that secured its second trip to the NCAA women's basketball tournament.

Yet, with the Eagles part of March Madness for the first time since 1987, there was at least one damper on that buzz: having to stay in a hotel 40 miles out due to limited availability near Oregon State's arena , leading to a gameday trip that took an hour.

“To be an hour away, we were pretty bummed,” Eastern Washington athletic director Tim Collins told The Associated Press.

It's an example of the logistical headaches that are part of the equation for a tournament that has long relied on host schools for opening-round games and the better attendance that comes with it. Yet with those sites not determined until days ahead of time compared to years on the men's side, there are more variables such as limited hotel availability displacing teams from the local scene — an issue highlighted by Utah reporting that it experienced a series of hate crimes in Idaho while staying 30 miles from its games in Spokane, Washington , before changing hotels.

“Seeing packed venues at first- and second-round games was incredible, and it is certainly an important aspect of our student-athletes’ NCAA Tournament experience,” Texas A&M deputy athletic director and senior woman administrator Kristen Brown said in an email to the AP.

“However, there also needs to be a certain standard and consistency across all host sites when it comes to areas like hotel accommodations, nutrition, and the competition facility that are prioritized as part of the student-athlete experience as well.”

That's a balance facing the NCAA as it evaluates the next steps for the tournament at a time of unprecedented growth and popularity for the sport.

Lynn Holzman, NCAA vice president for women's basketball, told the AP this week that the selection committee was scheduled to review its championship format after the 2025 tournament, though she is pushing for that to begin this year. That would include the advancement from the First Four through the early round hosts and then to the two-regional format introduced last season.

As far as host sites, it's a tricky balance, starting with the boost of stronger attendance for home-standing teams compared to playing at neutral sites to start the tournament. This year, the opening two rounds drew a record 292,456 fans , surpassing last year's previous high by more than 60,000.

“If the NCAA can come up with a well-designed plan for (neutral-site hosts), it would definite be better from a competitive standpoint,” said Nebraska spokesman Jeff Griesch, whose Cornhuskers traveled to the Oregon State site for the NCAAs. "Not sure it will be better for fans, the atmosphere in the buildings or the presentation on television.”

And there's another matter: Being picked as a host has become a standing reward for top teams based on their season success. It matters, too, such as Tennessee coach Kellie Harper noting North Carolina State's loud home crowd made it difficult for her team to communicate in a second-round loss at the Wolfpack .

“That's why all year long I'm so stressed out because I know every game matters so much if you're trying to get a top-16 and get to host,” Wolfpack coach Wes Moore said. “They've worked their tails off all year to get that little advantage, and just proud of them for cashing in on it.”

N.C. State offers an example of how it's easier to manage the logistics in some locations than others.

The school is located in the capital city of the country's ninth-most populous state, and the area frequently hosts men's opening-round games featuring eight teams, as well as previously hosting NHL events such as the entry draft (2004), All-Star Game (2011) and a Stadium Series outdoor game (2023) .

So finding nearby hotels capable of offering meeting space or nutritional support wasn't difficult. The three teams — Chattanooga and Green Bay joined the Lady Vols — playing at the Wolfpack's Reynolds Coliseum ended up staying at hotels within roughly 6 miles and 20 minutes of travel time from the venue.

Yet Raleigh is roughly seven times more populated than Corvallis, Oregon, where Eastern Washington, Nebraska, Texas A&M opened tournament play.

“In our case, Corvallis didn't have enough hotels,” Collins said. “The NCAA has three-star requirements. What kind of catering can you do? In a smaller town, you don't have many three-star hotels.”

The Eagles ended up staying in Salem, drawing the furthest travel time as the lowest-seeded team among the four in Oregon State's pod.

“Oregon State, their team gave us incredible hospitality," Collins said. "We asked for a police escort. Unfortunately, there was miscommunication and they gave us an escort but no traffic control.”

There also can be additional complications, such as the men's tournament holding games in Spokane the same week as the women's tournament along with a large youth volleyball tournament in the area that contributed to a pinch on hotel availability.

That illustrates Brown's point about pushing for more consistency in hosting requirements and offerings, particularly in evaluating the future in a sport of rising popularity.

“I have talked to some of my colleagues around the country,” Brown said. “Locker rooms at the competition facility should have bathrooms inside of them. Host hotels should be full service and have the ability to provide proper nutrition for teams, and if they are unable to do so, it should be required to allow outside catering in order to properly nourish your team. Hotel accommodations should be within a reasonable distance from the competition venue."

Brown went on to call those “minimum expectations” that schools have during regular-season competition.

If those expectations couldn't be reached in the current model, she said alternatives “should be explored, whether that is competing at neutral sites, going back to predetermined campus sites or some other setup that allows for our student-athletes to have the overall experience they deserve.”
