Tom Cruise missed Best Actor, but still got his first Oscar nomination in 23 years for Top Gun: Maverick

The global superstar landed major recognition for his work in the action sequel.

tom cruise best actor 2023

The Academy didn't recognize Tom Cruise with a Best Actor nod, but the global superstar still landed a major Oscar nomination for Top Gun: Maverick anyway.

For his work as a producer on the blockbuster sequel that has grossed nearly $1.5 billion to date , the 60-year-old scored his fourth career Oscar nomination as the film appeared Tuesday morning among the Academy's 10 Best Picture nominees.

Tuesday's nomination marks the fourth time the Academy has recognized Cruise throughout his lengthy career. He was previously nominated for his work as an actor for 1989's Born on the Fourth of July , 1996's Jerry Maguire , and 1999's Magnolia .

Top Gun: Maverick , which follows Cruise as the returning Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a U.S. Navy captain and test pilot who faces his conflicting past as he leads a new team of Top Gun graduates into the air, also earned 2023 Oscar nominations for Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay), Original Song (Lady Gaga's "Hold My Hand"), Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects.

Cruise made the Joseph Kosinski -directed movie — Paramount's long-awaited continuation of the original 1986 Top Gun film — alongside veteran Hollywood producers Jerry Bruckheimer , David Ellison, and Christopher McQuarrie, who also co-wrote the movie with Ehren Kruger and Eric Warren Singer.

The 95th Academy Awards will air Sunday, March 12, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on ABC. See the full list of 2023 Oscar nominations here .

‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ Dominates Oscars With Seven Wins, Including Best Picture (Full Winners List)

Everything Everywhere All at Once Best Picture Oscar Win

“ Everything Everywhere All at Once ” was named best picture at the 95 th Academy Awards on Sunday, capping off an improbable awards season run by winning the movie business’s highest honor.

It was a night of comebacks and reassessments. “Everything Everywhere All at Once’s” Michelle Yeoh became the first Asian woman to be recognized as best actress. The honor came after a long career in martial arts and action movies like “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” and “Yes, Madam.”

“Ladies, don’t ever let anyone tell you that you are past your prime,” Yeoh said. “For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities,” she added.

Brendan Fraser took best actor honors for his performance as a morbidly obese man trying to reconnect with his estranged daughter in “The Whale.” Fraser, once a prominent actor known for his work in popcorn flicks such as “George of the Jungle” and “The Mummy,” had spent the last decade and change away from the spotlight dealing with health and personal struggles. His win continues his remarkable resurgence.

“I started in this business 30 years ago, and this – they certainly didn’t come easily to me, but there was a facility that I didn’t appreciate at the time until it stopped,” Fraser said, acknowledging his career setbacks. He thanked his director Darren Aronofsky for “throwing me a creative lifeline and hauling me aboard.”

“My journey started on a boat,” he said. “I spent a year in a refugee camp and somehow I ended up here on Hollywood’s biggest stage. They say stories like this only happen in the movies. I cannot believe it’s happening to me. This is the American dream.”

“Dreams are something that you have to believe in,” he added. “I almost gave up on mine. To all of you out there, please keep your dreams alive.”

Jamie Lee Curtis, a veteran headliner of horror hits such as “Halloween” and the daughter of Hollywood legends Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, won best supporting actress for her turn as an IRS inspector in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

Curtis dedicated her statue “to all of the people who have supported the genre movies that I’ve made for all these years” and also acknowledged her family history in entertainment, noting, “my mother and my father were both nominated for Oscars in different categories.” Choking up, she ended with: “I just won an Oscar.”

With its multiverse storyline, and off-beat touches such as a character with hot dog hands and weaponized dildos, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” represents a radical departure from the kind of staid prestige fare that historically dominated the Oscars, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has changed dramatically in recent years. In the wake of the#OscarsSoWhite controversy after no actors of color were nominated in two consecutive years, the Academy made a big push in 2016 to diversify the pool of voters. In subsequent years its membership has gotten younger, and now includes more people of color and women.

The ceremony unfolded at a tense time for Hollywood. As consumers have shifted away from cable and towards subscription streaming services, major studios and their corporate parents have spent a lot of time and coin launching their own in-house Netflix challengers. The entertainment industry has also undergone a period of consolidation, with Discovery merging with WarnerMedia, Disney buying much of 21 st Century Fox and Amazon snatching MGM, deals that in the first two cases left the purchaser with a lot of debt on their balance sheet. Investors have become increasingly concerned that major media companies are over-leveraged and that the new ways that they are making money with streaming have failed to replace the old ways they once profited from such as cable subscriptions and movie ticket sales. That’s hurt the share prices of everyone from Netflix to Disney to the newly rechristened Warner Bros. Discovery, sparking a period of layoffs and cost-cutting. With a possible recession looming and studios facing tangled labor negotiations with the unions representing writers, directors and actors that could lead to strikes, there were dark clouds gathering that could have overshadowed the Oscars’ celebratory air.

“If anyone in this theater commits an act of violence at any point during this show you will be awarded the Oscar for best actor and permitted to give a 19-minute-long speech,” Kimmel joked.

“If anything unpredictable or violent happens during the ceremony, just do what you did last year — nothing,” he added. “Sit there and do absolutely nothing. Maybe even give the assailant a hug.”

“All Quiet on the Western Front,” an adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s novel about trench life during World War I, picked up four Oscars, including the prize for best international features. Other major winners included “Pinocchio,” Guillermo del Toro’s stop-motion musical, which was named best animated film, as well as “Women Talking,” which earned best adapted screenplay for Sarah Polley.

“Navalny,” a look at Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, won best documentary. Yulia Navalny, the imprisoned politician’s wife, came to the stage after the award was announced with a message aimed at Vladimir Putin. “I’m dreaming of the day when you will be free and our country will be free,” she said.

The Oscars did opt not to wade fully into international affairs. For the second year in a row, the program turned down overtures by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to address the global audience about his country’s struggles against Russia’s illegal invasion.

This year’s crop of best picture nominees included smaller films such as “Triangle of Sadness” and “Tár,” but also several popular favorites like “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Avatar: The Way of Water.” It’s unclear how much the inclusion of these blockbusters will lift this year’s viewership, but the Oscars have been on a ratings nosedive. Last year’s telecast drew an audience of 16.6 million, the second-lowest ratings in its history. In contrast, in 2014, the Oscars drew 43 million viewers, a sign of the telecast’s precipitous drop in popularity.

The Oscars made some notable cosmetic changes, subbing in a champagne-colored carpet for the usual red one. That choice, however, led to some last minute scrambling after a rainy weekend left organizers cutting up sections of the carpet that had been ruined by the bad weather and dirty shoe soles. However, some near disasters were averted. On Saturday, Ovation Hollywood, the shopping center and entertainment complex that hosts the Academy Awards, suffered power outages. By Sunday, though, the skies cleared and the only sign of flickering lights were the flashbulbs greeting the stars as they made their way into the auditorium.

Producers Guild Awards honor 'Top Gun' Tom Cruise, give top prize to 'Everything Everywhere All At Once'

tom cruise best actor 2023

LOS ANGELES – "Top Gun: Maverick" producer and star Tom Cruise was honored Saturday with a career achievement award at the 34th annual Producers Guild of America Awards.

However, the producers awards show bestowed the top prize of the night to  "Everything Everywhere All At Once," widening the sci-fi drama's lead as best picture front-runner.

The PGA is often seen as an Oscar bellwether. Eleven of the past 14 PGA winners have gone on to win best picture – meaning losing  the award  might have crushed the best picture hopes for "Top Gun: Maverick" at the Oscars on March 12.

How 'Top Gun: Maverick' can win best pic: The PGA is crucial

Tom Cruise is 'Top Gun' schmoozer: Academy calls Will Smith response 'inadequate'

Former Paramount CEO Sherry Lansing presented the David O. Selznick Achievement Award to Cruise, 60. Lansing recalled casting the actor for the 1981 drama "Taps."

"He had that magical undefinable quality called charisma.  Equally important, Tom had an incredible work ethic. Even then, he was always the first on the set, always well prepared and respectful to everyone," said Lansing. "Over 42 years later, despite phenomenal success, Tom Cruise is still that very same person."

Tom Cruise on making his dreams come true

Lansing greenlit 1996's "Mission: Impossible," the movie that began Cruise's producing career. As a studio head, Lansing admitted she was initially concerned that Cruise, already one of the biggest stars in the world, wanted to take on a movie version of the classic TV ensemble drama.

But Lansing's fears of diluting Cruise's star power with a movie ensemble disappeared when she read the first draft script Cruise sent over.

"I have to admit that I was delighted to find that in the very first few pages of the script, the entire 'Mission: Impossible' team is killed, except for Ethan Hunt, which is Tom's character," said Lansing. "And he spends the rest of the movie avenging their murders."

Cruise recalled his early days shooting "Taps" with Timothy Hutton and then-newcomer Sean Penn.

"I was certain this was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life," Cruise said, recalling that he studied the movie-making process. "I was overwhelmed by what I didn’t know."

Tom Cruise thanks movie audience for 'Tom Gun: Maverick'

Cruise thanked Jerry Bruckheimer, his producer of the original 1986 “Top Gun” and his producing partner on the long-awaited sequel "Maverick."

"You opened the door for me," Cruise told Bruckheimer. "You welcomed me in and I will be grateful forever."

Cruise paid tribute to the producers in the ballroom along with mentors like Steven Spielberg and Lansing,

"You’ve all enabled me the adventurous life that I wanted,” he said.

Cruise has been lauded for fighting to keep the theatrical window for "Top Gun: Maverick" despite pandemic theater closures. At the PGA, Cruise gave thanks to movie audiences "for whom I work first and foremost. Thank you for letting me entertain you, and I promise I'll always do everything I can to accomplish that goal."

Other movies (and TV) honored by the PGA:

  •  "Navalny" won for best documentary feature,
  • “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,”  took best animated film.
  • "Till" won the Stanley Kramer Award honoring a production or producer that illuminates and raises public awareness of important social issues.
  • TV's “The Bear” won for best comedy.
  • “The White Lotus” won for best drama.
  • “Lizzo’s Watch Out For The Big Grrrls” won for best reality or competition series.
  •  “Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy” won for non-fiction series, “The Dropout” won best limited series and “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” won best TV movie.
  • Mindy Kaling received the Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television for her work producing shows including “The Mindy Project,” “The Sex Lives of College Girls,” “Never Have I Ever,” “Velma” and “The Office.”

Oscar Experts Typing: Could the Best Actor lineup be filled out by Toms?

  • Joyce Eng , Christopher Rosen
  • December 9, 2022 11:00AM

Tom Cruise, Top Gun: Maverick; Tom Hanks, A Man Called Otto

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing , a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng  and  Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, as “ The Whale ” hits theaters, we reexamine Best Actor. Christopher Rosen : Hello, Joyce! We’re back at it again with our fingers ready to type about what seems like one of the most competitive acting categories of the year, even if Film Twitter doesn’t want to admit that’s the case. I’m typing, of course, about Best Actor, where Brendan Fraser has been the online pick of choice for months thanks to his performance in “The Whale.” But while Fraser has some compelling narrative juice as both a comeback performer and former beloved star of ’90s comfort food movies, neither one of us are convinced he’ll be the last man standing here. But maybe that’s putting the cart before the horse. This is one of my favorite categories to predict because there are seemingly three obvious locks – Fraser, New York Film Critics Circle and National Board of Review winner Colin Farrell for “The Banshees of Inisherin” and Austin Butler for “Elvis” — and then a whole lot of dart throws. I’ve got Bill Nighy for “Living” and Mr. Tom Cruise for “ Top Gun: Maverick ” rounding out my five. But I’m not really convinced either will make the cut and I’ve toyed in recent days with putting in Tom Hanks for “ A Man Called Otto ,” Gabriel LaBelle for “The Fabelmans,” Paul Mescal for “Aftersun,” and even W*ll Smith for “Emancipation” (I know). But maybe that’s the reason I keep it locked in on Nighy and Cruise: there aren’t really a lot of options that feel any stronger than those two men, and each of those nominations — while deserved — also feel like lifetime achievement honors to boot. If I had to pick an alternate now, it would be Hanks. “A Man Called Otto” — an American adaptation of “A Man Called Ove,” the best-selling Swedish novel that was turned into an Oscar-nominated feature — is down-the-middle Oscar stuff, and if this were 10 years ago, I’d probably have it in my Best Picture lineup. Hanks is great, kind of doing a grumpy Clint Eastwood bit but with the Hanks heart of gold and the comic timing of his ‘90s run. The academy has often ignored iconic latter-day Hanks performances — I’m still waiting for his nominations for “Captain Phillips” and “Bridge of Spies” — but in a fluid year without many options, what if he gets in? Joyce, talk me out of this and then tell us what to make of the top three candidates — is Fraser the George  king of the jungle?

joyceeng : Remember when Hanks was in play for double noms for “Captain Phillips” and “Saving Mr. Banks” and was doubly snubbed? That might happen again, except he’s not widely expected (yet) to get in for either “A Man Called Otto” or “Elvis,” though you and I both have him getting shortlisted for the latter elsewhere. It’s also funny that he couldn’t even win at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards, aka the Aussie Oscars, when “Elvis” swept . Anyway, I have the same Best Actor five as you do. Nighy isn’t safe like the top three, but with a dearth of options, he should be OK. He’s also got Hugh Jackman , his direct Sony Pictures Classics competition,  stumping for him now. Is this a backwards way of campaigning for “The Son”? Imagine telling someone 11 months ago that people will be seriously predicting Tom Cruise for a Best Actor nomination for “Top Gun: Maverick.” But here we are. I have him in because he, on paper, has the fewest shortcomings of the fringe contenders. Hanks has the better Oscar résumé, but he’s had so much trouble scoring nominations this century that I can’t be confident in him as a filler nominee for a late movie. As for Cruise’s “Mummy” predecessor, we discussed Fraser’s standing the other day. So far he has not been “performing” like a runaway sweeper: Volpi Cup loss to Farrell, Gotham loss to Danielle Deadwyler , Independent Spirit Award snub. And while he was not expected to win NYFCC, an NBR win was on the table, considering that group’s tastes, but it went with Farrell as well. Fraser can definitely turn things around with the televised awards (of course, he’s not attending the Golden Globes, so there will be no speech if he wins). But this category is also the most connected to Best Picture, and with the polarizing reception to “The Whale” — in theaters now! — that might hold him back in the end. Then again, the industry could just bawl their eyes out over “The Whale” like they did “CODA,” so who knows. You basically talked to everyone from “The Whale” this week, so I am shocked that you have not moved it into more categories. Where is Chris and what have you done to him?

SEE Oscar Experts slugfest: 2023 Golden Globe film nominations predictions, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ makes a splash

Christopher Rosen : Lol, Joyce, this is the new me! But actually I have Fraser and Hong Chau in and you know I want to predict Queen Sadie Sink too. But I agree that the movie itself might be the biggest hurdle to a Fraseraissance. That is why I’ve ultimately stuck with Butler. You know what movie people love? “Elvis.” I think it could be an eight- or nine-time nominee this year, so much so that if Baz Luhrmann landed among the Best Director nominees, I wouldn’t be shocked. (Is “Elvis” this year’s “Joker”?) So in the end, Butler feels like the choice — especially because recent Oscar history shows the value the academy places on real-life transformations. Butler is also ~ doing the work ~ and while he’s not at the Eddie Redmayne level of campaigning yet, the season is still young. I know you have Butler in first too, but my gut tells me you want to see Farrell pull off the win. Can you imagine a scenario where he does?

joyceeng : You know Farrell is my personal favorite — I still can’t get that one line reading (you know the one) out of my head and I cannot wait to repeatedly watch the scene when “Banshees” hits HBO Max on Tuesday — but I also don’t like to hopedict my faves, especially when there’s not a ton of data yet. Right now, between Farrell and Butler, I’d give the edge to the latter, but Farrell can take the Olivia Colman route of Volpi Cup, comedy Globe and BAFTA to Oscar gold. But if Butler makes it in at BAFTA (he doesn’t exactly serve “jury pick”), I would not be surprised if he won that too since the Brits are bigger Baz fans than the academy is (#neverforget when he won Best Director for the iconic “Romeo + Juliet,” beating King of the World James Cameron ). Circling back to Cruise, here’s a thought I was recently discussing with someone: what if he’s actually in fourth?

SEE Oscar Experts Typing: Who will round out the Best Actress final 5?

Christopher Rosen : I am not going to argue with that. We’ve all seemingly had Nighy in there because he’s a beloved actor making what is maybe a final run at academy glory in a movie released by Oscar factory Sony Pictures Classics. But despite my love and tears, “Living” hasn’t exactly caught fire — like “Otto,” it’s easy to imagine it would’ve landed five or six nominations plus Best Picture were this the ’90s. It’s possible Nighy would be the film’s lone nominee — which probably places him in the Mescal or Jeremy Pope range of long shot despite appearances otherwise. So basically what I’m saying is that if/when I pivot to Hanks, it’ll be Maverick who stays in flight and not Nighy. But I’ll leave you with the last word here: Nighy or Cruise?

joyceeng : I gotta say that, at this second, I would pick Cruise. “Living” is indeed very quiet right now and, yes, we’re all just assuming SPC will work its behind-the-scenes ninja magic on voters like it usually does. I guess utilizing Jackman is part of that? This is truly one of the weirdest Best Actor races, so until Globe nominations on Monday, I’ll remain in my Nighy-Cruise holding pattern.

What you need to know about the 80th golden globe awards.

Twitter users appeared impressed with Carmichael's remarks — his name trended on Twitter after the monologue.

At the start of his speech, Murphy, who is gay, asked the audience to give a standing ovation to “Pose” star Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, who last year became the first transgender actor to win a Golden Globe. He also lauded actors Billy Porter, who presented Murphy with the award, Matt Bomer and Jeremy Pope, all of whom he has worked with throughout his 25 years in Hollywood.

Murphy, 57, is perhaps best known for co-creating “Glee,” “Pose” and the “American Horror Story” franchise.

“I’ve dedicated most of my lifetime achievement speech here tonight to these actors I’ve worked with to make a point of hope and progress,” Murphy said. “When I was a young person at home in the seventies watching ‘The Carol Burnett Show,’ I never, ever saw a person like me getting an award or even being a character on a TV show."

But M.M. Keeravani, who accepted the award on behalf of the three songwriters, shared the win with the rest of his "RRR" team.

"It's been an age-old practice to say this award actually belongs to someone else," Keervani said. "I was planning not to say to those words when I get an award like this, but I'm sorry to say that I'm going to repeat the tradition, because I mean my words."

Host and comedian Jerrod Carmichael walked in to the sound of Chloe Flower's piano to a stage and a rowdy crowd.

He told everyone to "be a little quiet here” and welcomed them to the 80th edition of the Golden Globes.

"I'm here because I'm Black," he said in reference to last year's controversy. The award show did not air on NBC last year because the Hollywood Press Association "did not have a single Black member until George Floyd died," Carmichael said.

He said he was having tea at home when he got the phone call to host the Golden Globes. "I was invited to be the Black face of a white organization."

After he joked about taking the gig for $500,000 without knowing the changes the organization has made, Carmichael said he took the job because he wanted to be in a room of people he admires.

"This industry deserves nights like these."

When I started my career as a child actor in 'Indiana Jones' … I started to wonder if that was it, if that was just luck."

Quan is the first actor of Asian descent in nearly 40 years to win in his category, with the last being Haing S. Ngor for his role in “The Killing Fields” in 1985. The actor beat out Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan, who were nominated separately for their roles in “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Brad Pitt for “Babylon,” and Eddie Redmayne for “The Good Nurse.”

Quan’s performance in “Everything Everywhere,” where his kind and hopeful character helps save the multiverse and keep his marriage and family together, has been critically acclaimed. They added that the evening felt surreal.

It’s carpet time!

E’s kicking off its awards show now....

What we're keeping an eye on tonight

Here's what some people on our live blogging team are looking out for this evening.

Kaetlyn Liddy, newsroom coordinator : I’ll be watching Jennifer Coolidge and her “White Lotus” stars closely to see if HBO's second season will match the first in critical acclaim. If it were up to me, Coolidge and Aubrey Plaza would tie for the Globe based on the Twitter content their performances inspired alone.

Matt Lavietes, NBC Out reporter : I’m most excited to see if gay icon Coolidge  finally  gets the chance to finish the iconic winning speech she attempted to give at the Emmys. I’m also very curious to see how Emma D’Arcy — who uses they/them pronouns — would react if they win the globe for best performance by an actress in a television series, given they do not identify as female.

Claretta Bellamy, NBCBLK News Fellow: I’m rooting for the “Woman King” herself Viola Davis for best performance by an actress in a motion picture — drama, partly because I just read her inspiring book and also because the movie left me in happy tears. I’m also a Black Panther fangirl, so, Wakanda Forever!

Doha Madani, senior breaking news reporter/resident Taylor Swift expert : I’m looking to see whether Swift takes home the globe for best song for “Carolina,” a sign that would place her as a potential front-runner for an Oscar in the coming months. I am also a world-class hater and am rooting for an “Avatar” loss.

Kalhan Rosenblatt, culture & trends reporter/Gaga stan: There are pop stars vying for the best original song award, and there is a pop rivalry in the NBC News newsroom. While Doha is rooting for Swift, I’ll be rooting for Lady Gaga to take home the award for her “Top Gun: Maverick” song “Hold My Hand.” Fun fact: Gaga previously won the award for “Shallow” in 2019 and Swift presented her with the award that year.

Anahita Pardiwalla, social storytelling editor : I'm hoping Rihanna's Golden Globes nomination in the best original song category will inspire her to release new music we’ve all so (im)patiently been waiting for.

Uwa Ede-Osifo, news associate : As a Quinta Brunson stan from her early Buzzfeed days, I’m watching to see if “Abbott Elementary” will continue earning earn more well-deserved accolades.

Daysia Tolentino , culture & trends reporter : I wouldn’t be surprised if fan-favorite “Abbott Elementary” won in the best television series, musical or comedy. But I think the hype for “The Bear” or even “Wednesday” could make it a tough decision.

Crystal Minaya, editorial assistant :   I am rooting for Austin Butler who is nominated best actor for his role in “Elvis." Let’s face it: We all fell in love with his glamorous and stunning take on the late singer in the Baz Luhrmann-directed film.

Brahmjot Kaur, NBC Asian America reporter, NBCU Academy Embed : I’m crossing my fingers tight for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” taking home the award for best picture in a musical/comedy! Hot dog fingers, the multiverse and a star-studded cast — what more can you ask for?

Saba Hamedy, culture & trends editor: Awards ceremonies often have their fair share of political moments — sometimes via people’s fashion choices, other times in winners’ speeches. I'm wondering whether we'll see any public support for the people of Iran tonight. The country has been gripped by protests since the Sept. 16 death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who died after she was detained by the government’s morality police.

It's Brendan Fraser's first nomination, but he swore off the Golden Globes

Brendan Fraser is up for his very first Golden Globe tonight, a best actor nomination for his role in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale." But his dark history with the HFPA will keep him from attending tonight.

Fraser alleges that he was assaulted by HFPA’s former president Philip Berk in the summer of 2003. He detailed the incident in a 2018 GQ interview, saying it made him feel "ill." Berk denied the allegation.

In a subsequent GQ interview last year , Fraser vowed that if he would not attend this year's ceremony even if he was nominated for a Golden Globe.

“I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I have respect for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association,” he said.

"The Whale" has been lauded as a tremendous return to film for Fraser, whose portrayal of a 600-pound gay man confined to a wheelchair earned him a six-minute standing ovation the Venice Film Festival in September. The actor was seen crying as he received accolades from his industry peers.

There are once again zero female director nominees

tom cruise best actor 2023

Saba Hamedy

The HFPA voting body didn't nominate any women for the best director category, a move which generated backlash online.

Some of the talented female directors who were snubbed: Sarah Polley ("Women Talking"); Gina Prince-Bythewood ("The Woman King"); Charlotte Wells ("Aftersun"); and Chinonye Chukwu ("Till").

It's not the first time the Globes have been called out for this. Back in 2018, when actor Natalie Portman was presenting the award for best director alongside Ron Howard, she highlighted a similar lack of representation in the list of nominees. Before announcing their names, she said , “And here are the all male nominees."

That same year, Barbra Streisand, who was also presenting, lamented on the the lack of women honored in the category.

“We need more women directors and more women to be nominated for best director," she said . "There are so many films out there that are so good directed by women.”

Speaking of 'Tar' ...

Joy Y. Wang

While many in the LGBTQ world may be rooting for Cate Blanchett to win best actress for her performance as an abrasive conductor in “Tár,” not everyone is happy with it.

Marin Alsop, who was name-checked in “Tár,” said the critically acclaimed film offended her “as a woman ... as a conductor ... as a lesbian.”

NBC Out recently wrote about why Alsop, the world’s best-known female conductor, is displeased with the film.

LGBTQ fans are rooting for "Tár"

Many queer eyes are on “Tár” tonight, nominated for best motion picture, best screenplay and best actress.

In particular Cate Blanchett, a lesbian icon, has received critical acclaim for her explosive performance as the fictional conductor Lydia Tár. The unlikeable Tár spends much of the film humiliating students, flirting with younger women and hiding evidence of her wrongdoings.

ICYMI: A long list of nominees

In case you're in need of a refresher, here's a look at the nominees this year .

On the movies side, Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin," leads the pack of nominees with eight nods. On the TV side, ABC’s breakout sitcom “Abbott Elementary” leads with five nods.

As NBC recently reported , LGBTQ people, both real and fictional, will be front and center at the awards show. And Latinos are represented in about half the award categories in this year’s Golden Globes . Nominees include Selena Gomez, Jenna Ortega, Aubrey Plaza, Diego Calva and others.

A sneak peak at the seating chart

The Golden Globes official Twitter account on Monday shared a look at tonight's seating chart.

"Can you spot all the names?" the account wrote in its tweet. Billy Porter, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie were among the printed names in the video.

Welp, it's raining in L.A.

Turns out it's not always sunny in Los Angeles. Today's forecast is a high of 60 degrees and some rain.

That means you'll see tents covering the red carpet at the The Beverly Hilton, where the Golden Globes ceremony takes place.

“This weather dealt us a hand,” the Globes executive producer and showrunner Dionne Harmon  told Variety . “You’ll be enclosed in a big tent, so no one should be worried. They will get out of their car to a dry, warm place.”

Stay dry out there!

Event staff clear water from the carpet before the start of the 80th annual Golden Globe Awards at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2023, in Beverly Hills, Calif.

How to watch this year's show

For those of you interested in red carpet looks, E! kicks off its coverage at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT on Peacock and  E! News channel on YouTube .

The show itself kicks off at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT on NBC and will stream simultaneously on Peacock.

Of course, you can also follow along on our live blog as we provide updates on the winners and other big moments.

Oh my God they're (celebrities) back again

It seems the Golden Globes will be a star-studded affair once again.

Ahead of Tuesday's ceremony, the HFPA announced a slew of celebs who will attend this year's awards. The list of presenters is almost too long to share in a blog post.

TLDR: You can expect to see some of your favorites on stage presenting and on the red carpet showing off their fabulous attire.

Host Jerrod Carmichael is ready for the big night

Jerrod Carmichael, who  won an Emmy Award  last year for his HBO stand-up special “Rothaniel," is taking on the role as this year's host.

Last year, he generated praise for his special, in which he came out. He also created the sitcom “The Carmichael Show,” which ran for three seasons on NBC.

He'll be the first to host since Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took the stage in 2021. Last year’s Globes were not shown live.

Here’s one of the promo clips.

The Golden Globes controversy, explained

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the organization that puts on the Golden Globes, has been  intensely criticized  in recent years for the lack of racial diversity among its voting members and various ethical concerns.

The organization had no Black voting members, the Los Angeles Times reported last February. The allegations of ethical lapses within the HFPA were  detailed by the L.A. Times in its exposé, which got widespread attention in the entertainment industry.

So ... last year, NBC, which has been the longtime TV home of the ceremony, decided not to televise it . The show went on, quietly and without much fanfare. (There wasn't even a red carpet!) Variety described it as "the strangest Golden Globes Ceremony ever," where "not one famous face, top executive or notable publicity rep could be spotted." There was just a small audience in-person, and winners were announced on social media.

In September, HFPA announced it has added 103 new voters to the group that oversees the Globes. Now, according to Variety, "the voting body overall is made up of 200 members that are 52% female and 51.5% “racially and ethnically diverse” with 19.5% Latinx, 12% Asian, 10% Black and 10% Middle Eastern members. The statement says that the voting body also includes individuals who self-identify as LGBTQIA+."

That same month, NBC confirmed the 2023 show will air once again. But the question remains: Will Hollywood embrace it again? It's unclear, but the list of stars set to attend tonight's ceremony is seemingly long . Perhaps longer than initially expected, given that many actors didn't really acknowledge their nominations .

By Tori B. Powell, Mike Hayes, Matt Meyer and Seán Federico O'Murchú, CNN

Why Tom Cruise and James Cameron aren't at the Oscars

From CNN"s Lisa Respers France

Tom Cruise attends the Oscars nominees luncheon on February 13.

Two of the people being credited with getting audiences back in the theater apparently have skipped the biggest night that celebrates movies.

Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel mentioned in his opening monologue that both Tom Cruise and James Cameron were not in attendance, though he joked that perhaps Cruise was there, dressed as nominee Judd Hirsch.

While Cruise's blockbuster "Top Gun: Maverick" is nominated for best film, Deadline reported the star was skipping the show because of work.

Meanwhile, Kimmel mentioned there was some speculation that Cameron sat this one out because he had not been nominated in the directing category for "Avatar: The Way of Water," which is also nominated for best film.

"Avatar" producer Jon Landau said on the red carpet (which was really champagne-colored ) that Cameron was not coming for “personal reasons."

Guillermo Del Toro's "Pinocchio" wins the award for best animated feature

“Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio”

Guillermo Del Toro's "Pinocchio" took home the Academy Award for best animated feature. It was the first award announced of the night.

The filmmaker, who used stop-motion animation to create the latest "Pinocchio" adaptation, went on to thank his family and Netflix.

From CNN's Marianne Garvey

Host Jimmy Kimmel speaks onstage.

Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel jokes that if any audience member wants to incite violence or "get jiggy with it," in a reference to Will Smith's song, "Gettin' Jiggy Wit It," he's got backup.

Kimmel joked that they would have to get through Michelle Yeoh, Michael B. Jordan, Steven Spielberg and many others to get to him on stage.

Background: During 2022’s ceremony, Smith walked on stage at the Oscars and slapped Chris Rock, who was presenting at the time, after he made a joke about Smith’s wife’s shaved head.

Smith  later apologized , but The Academy sanctioned the actor by  banning him from attending the Oscars for the next 10 years.

Jimmy Kimmel first appeared at the 95th Oscars ceremony in a skit where he pretended to be in the "Top Gun" movie franchise.

Sitting behind Tom Cruise in a fighter jet, he pulls off a helmet labeled with the call sign "Meatball." Cruise advised him to eject from the plane, then Kimmel dropped on to the stage via parachute.

"Top Gun: Maverick" is nominated in several categories this evening.

The 2023 Oscars are underway

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” leads the Oscars with 11 nominations. And the genre-defying movie’s cast turned up in style.

Michelle Yeoh was among the night’s best-dressed celebrities in a white-feathered Dior gown, while James Hong arrived on the champagne-colored carpet wearing one of the night’s boldest accessory: a blue bowtie adorned with — in a nod to the film — a pair of googly eyes.

Tom Cruise’s 2023 Oscars Snub For ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Leaves Twitter Furious: “The Oscars Are Stupid”

Where to stream:.

  • Top Gun: Maverick

'Road House' Director Doug Liman's Studio Star Vehicles Are Always Refreshingly Uneven, Unpredictable, and Weirdly Alive

In the 'road house' remake, jake gyllenhaal is still desperate to play the tough guy, what a-lister screamed at rebecca ferguson: hugh grant jake gyllenhaal jacob tremblay, rebecca ferguson once told "idiot" mystery co-star to "f off" after they screamed at her on set: "no one had my back".

The 2023 Oscars nominations came and went without paying the slightest attention to Tom Cruise and his performance in Top Gun: Maverick . The 2022 action movie has been nominated in Best Picture categories for both the Academy Awards and the Golden Globe Awards, but Cruise has yet to be nominated for Best Actor. What gives?

Many have expressed that Cruise and Top Gun can’t be separated, calling the movie a star vehicle for the actor. Following the Oscar nominations, journalist Max Weiss tweeted , “I will say this. If you’re going to nominate Top Gun: Maverick For Best Picture, you’ve gotta nominate Tom Cruise. He’s the whole thing. He’s the Top Gun AND the Maverick. He’s the movie and the movie is him.”

Very valid point. Decider’s John Serba wrote in his review of Top Gun: Maverick : “Cruise is very much in his sweet-spot zone here, charismatic and ever-so-slightly self-effacing, even looking his age a little bit, as the character demands at this place and time. You’ll never take the movie star out of this guy.”

And Cruise’s Top Gun costar Jennifer Connelly would agree. Earlier this week, she told Variety , “He’s extraordinary. He does an amazing job in the movie. He’s extraordinary as a person and fantastic as an actor, and I think that he is just perfect.”

When talking about Cruise’s Oscar potential, she added, “He embodies that character so beautifully, and I think he absolutely deserves it.”

She continued to praise the relationship Cruise’s Navy Pilot character has with the others, specifically with Miles Teller ’s character, Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, which Connelly described as “beautiful and moving.” Connelly also gave a mention to “the work that he did to accomplish those flying sequences.”

No Tom Cruise for Best Actor? I know the award isn’t for “Man most willing to be strapped to a missile and fired into the sun if it makes you 8% more willing to buy a movie ticket”, but at least give the guy a nomination! #OscarNominations2023 — Jay Black (@jayblackisfunny) January 24, 2023

Tom Cruise learned to fly an F-18 for Maverick. No actor has ever been more method. The Oscars are stupid… https://t.co/3pcbqEHoao — Brian Moote (@MootePoints) January 24, 2023

Top Gun: Maverick comes 30 years after the original film and brings Cruise back as the eponymous character, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. The pilot “must confront the ghosts of his past” when he begins training a group of graduates and meets the son of his former friend, Lt. Bradshaw. The synopsis teases, “Bitter rivalries ignite as the pilots prepare for a specialized mission, which will require the ultimate sacrifice from those chosen to fly it.”

The movie was the second-highest grossing film of 2022, raking in over $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office. Top Gun: Maverick held the number one spot until December when it was eclipsed by James Cameron ’s Avatar: The Way of the Water .

At the 2023 Oscars, Top Gun: Maverick has been nominated for six awards, including, Best Picture, Best Sound, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Song, Best Editing, and Best Visual Effects. For Best Picture, the action flick is up against Everything Everywhere All at Once , All Quiet on the Western Front , Avatar: The Way of Water , The Banshees of Inisherin , Elvis , The Fabelmans , Tár , Triangle of Sadness , and Women Talking .

Tom Cruise: All New Movies Coming Out in 2023 and 2024

Naman Shrestha of Tom Cruise: All New Movies Coming Out in 2023 and 2024

After his breakthrough with leading roles in ‘Risky Business’ and ‘ Top Gun ‘ in the 1980s, Thomas “Tom” Cruise Mapother IV started bagging pivotal roles in several dramas, including ‘ Born on the Fourth of July ,’ for which he even won a Golden Globe Award and got nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. In the 1990s, he rose to newer heights of stardom by featuring in various commercially successful films, such as ‘ A Few Good Men ,’ ‘ Interview with the Vampire ,’ ‘The Firm,’ and ‘ Jerry Maguire .’

Once he impacted dramas, he started traversing the action and sci-fi genres. By landing some iconic roles in the ‘ Mission: Impossible ‘ film series, ‘ Collateral ,’ ‘ Edge of Tomorrow ,’ and ‘ Top Gun: Maverick ,’ he established himself as an action star, performing most of the risky stunts on his own. The winner of three Golden Globe Awards, four nominations for the Oscars, and an Honorary Palme d’Or, Tom Cruise is known to be one of the world’s highest-paid actors. Given his immense popularity and fandom, most of our readers are looking forward to his future projects. Here is a list of all the upcoming movies and TV shows of Tom Cruise!

1. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two (2024)

Tom Cruise recently jumped off a cliff on a motorbike for ‘ Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One ‘ and he will be in action soon enough in its sequel, ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two.’ Helmed by Christopher McQuarrie, the spy action movie is the eighth installment in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ film series with Cruise reprising his role as Ethan Hunt for the eighth time running.

tom cruise best actor 2023

Although the plot details are kept under wraps, the action-adventure film is most likely to resume Ethan’s hunt for The Entity as he meets some new friends and foes along the way. The production for the sequel began in March 2022 but is yet to be finished due to the delay caused by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Having gone through several postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic when it comes to its release date, it is now officially set to be released on June 28, 2024. But it is very much possible that it will get postponed again due to the pause in production.

2. Untitled Tom Cruise/SpaceX Project (TBA)

tom cruise best actor 2023

Tom Cruise is set to take his status as an action star to the next level by traveling out of Earth to film the first ever Hollywood motion picture in outer space. In May 2020, it was reported that Elon Musk’s Space X and Cruise were working on an action-adventure project with NASA. Not only is Cruise expected to be blasted into space alongside filmmaker Doug Liman, with whom he has previously worked in ‘ American Made ‘ and ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ for the upcoming film, but he will also live up to his reputation by attempting to do a space walk outside of the International Space Station. In this movie, Cruise is set to essay the role of a down-on-his-luck man who is the sole person in the position to save Earth. Apart from starring in the film, he is attached to the project as a writer as well as a producer.

3. Live Die Repeat and Repeat (TBA)

A sequel to the 2014 movie ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ ‘Live Die Repeat and Repeat’ is an upcoming science fiction film that will reportedly reunite Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman, with the former set to reprise his role as Major William Cage. Moreover, Emily Blunt is also rumored to portray Rita again, alongside Cruise. Ever since the release of the hit original film, talks of a sequel have been flying around. However, in 2019, it was finally set in motion when Matthew Robinson was brought on to write the script.

tom cruise best actor 2023

Fast forward to a couple of years later, in a May 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly , Emily Blunt revealed, “That was an amazing script, but I just don’t know what the future holds for it. I did read a script that was in really great shape, but it’s just a matter of if that can even happen now. I don’t have the straight answer on that one.” With the project still lingering in the development stage, it is hard to expect it to be brought to life in at least a couple of years.

2023 Oscar Nominees’ Five Biggest Snubs, From Tom Cruise to Women Directors

By Marlow Stern

Marlow Stern

In the all-too-early hours of Jan. 24, the nominations for the 95 th annual Academy Awards were announced. Actors Riz Ahmed ( Sound of Metal ) and Allison Williams ( Get Out ) did the honors. Sadly, they were not joined in the festivities by Williams’ deadly-singing-robot co-star M3GAN , though she was surely there in spirit.

With a quartet of blockbuster films in contention — Top Gun: Maverick , Avatar: The Way of Water, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, as well as Elvis — this year’s Oscars had a golden opportunity to expand its global audience beyond record-low viewership of 10.5 million in 2021. So, did the Academy take advantage? Or did it pull a 2009, where it failed to nominate The Dark Knight and Wall-E for Best Picture, leading to rules changes and much hand-wringing?

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

These were the five biggest snubs to emerge from this year’s Oscar nominations.

While Top Gun: Maverick received six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and a surprise Best Adapted Screenplay nod, the man who makes the whole thing run smoothly failed to secure an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Cruise is not only the biggest movie star in the world, and maybe even the last true one, but also has a history of being screwed-over by the Academy. He’s never won an Oscar for acting, despite deserving wins for Jerry Maguire and Magnolia, and hasn’t been nominated for an Oscar in more than two decades. He has only three acting nods in his entire career (the two aforementioned films, plus Born on the Fourth of July ). Have Cruise’s Scientology shenanigans run him afoul of the Academy? They certainly haven’t helped.

Yes, another year has gone by where no women are nominated for Best Director. I was hoping that Charlotte Wells would be recognized for her artfully restrained helming of Aftersun, a personal and heartbreaking tale of an anguished young father (Mescal) and his 11-year-old daughter (Frankie Corio) spending one last summer vacation together in Turkey, but it was not to be. Instead, Ruben Östlund received a nod for Triangle of Sadness, in this writer’s opinion one of the more ostentatious, narratively trite films of the past year. Maybe Greta Gerwig will help right these wrongs with this summer’s Barbie.

The 35th Best Actor of All-Time: Tom Cruise

best film:   It is all about 1999 here with twin titan masterpieces from Paul Thomas Anderson and Stanley Kubrick. Magnolia and Eyes Wide Shut are by far Tom Cruise’s best films even if there is an underappreciated evenness to his entire filmography. The odd thing about Cruise’s 1999 is, it feels like it killed the artistic ambition in him to some extent. Few exceptions aside, he has largely avoided working with auteurs since 1999. Magnolia, Cruise’s best film, was a box office bomb (which it feels like eats at Cruise more than just about any other actor on this list), did not get him his Oscar (he was robbed) and the tyrannical lengthy shooting method and schedule of Stanley Kubrick probably shattered some of the spark in Cruise (and potentially his marriage to Nicole Kidman). The results though are astounding – Cruise is manning the ship for the two best films of 1999 – a banner year. What If Clark Gable was in Gone with the Wind and The Rules of the Game ? Or Cary Grant in North by Northwest and 400 Blows ? Or, more recently, what if Daniel Day-Lewis were in There Will be Blood and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford ?  Anyways, Cruise is particularly jaw-dropping in Magnolia – a thundering achievement – forceful and significant. It sort of makes his work in Eyes Wide Shut look a little pedestrian by comparison, but that is only by comparison, and a compliment to his work in Magnolia – not an indictment of his work in Eyes Wide Shut in any way.

best performance:   There is Magnolia and then a sizable gulf between everything else … and then there is about seven (7) performances that are clumped together behind it virtually tied for second (from the four below on the top five and add Risky Business, Born on the Fourth of July, Minority Report ). These are all very rock solid – but not close to his work as Frank T.J. Mackey. Cruise gets the 2001: A Space Odyssey Also sprach Zarathustra Richard Strauss music introduction, the bombastic speechmaking, the intense interview (reminiscent of the processing scene in The Master with Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour – except here – Cruise does not share the spotlight with anyone) and the breakdown scene with his father. It has it all and Cruise is razor sharp – he has never been better.

it is 25 minutes into  Magnolia before the Frank T.J. Mackey introduction. His opening monologue and cathartic reunion with Jason Robards may be the show stoppers but his acting in his interview when he is getting exposed is a blow your hair back scene as well. Cruise is charismatic and arrogant (playing into his main talent as an actor) and studied – even in weaker movies like C ocktail he is dedicated to learning how to act like a bartender, or shoot pool ( The Color of Money) – here in Magnolia  his summersault while changing must have been practiced – it looks like he had done it a million times.

stylistic innovations/traits: Tom Cruise is a box office monster who has been in archiveable films spanning over forty (40) years. His first archiveable film is in 1981, but it is 1986 at age twenty-four (24) that takes off into the stratosphere ( Top Gun was the #1 box office film of the year). He ran off five (5) consecutive films in the 1990s making 100 million. He has been rather selective – only forty-five (45) films total – 20 (twenty) of them in the archives. Cruise has the iconic smile, the Ray-Bans, the running in his films (sort of lifted from Dustin Hoffman – his Rain Man costar) and the undeniable screen presence. Cruise is not an actor with great range, but nobody can play cocky and confidence better than Cruise. Cruise can tackle characters with obsessive compulsive disorders ( Magnolia, Collateral ) and has a clear affinity for attention to details. He twirls the pool sticks in The Color of Money just like he expertly portrays a bartender in the failed Cocktail . Cruise is crude and cocky and wonderful at it of course in Martin Scorsese’s The Color of Money .   He is doing karate with the pool cue (clearly showing off Cruise’s detailed/learned approach to method acting), the hair, the lip synching, the video games, the shirt with his name on it – haha. Needless to say Cruise is very believable as a character (a “natural flake”) and as a prodigy pool player. This is sort of surface deep – but it pays off on screen as he looks like a talent or a natural. No doubt this same mentality led him to become the sort of 2010s and 2020s Jackie Chan with the stunt work. He has three (3) acting nominations all came between 1989-1999 and again he sort of stopped taking on those sort of challenges – and focusing full time on box office and his action work.

Eyes Wide Shut – from the very outset Kubrick is interested in the falsehood of marriage – at the party both characters (Cruise’s Dr. Bill Harford and Kidman’s Alice Harford) find themselves in temptation traps. Kidman’s portion of the film largely drops off after the party, but for the entire running time of the film, temptation is present for Dr. Bill – women are just throwing themselves at him (and to be fair he is not too quick to pull away – he certainly leans in).

directors worked with: Cameron Crowe (2), Francis Ford Coppola (1), Martin Scorsese (1), Barry Levinson (1), Oliver Stone (1), Rob Reiner (1), Sydney Pollack, Brian De Palma (1), Stanley Kubrick (1), Paul Thomas Anderson (1), Steven Spielberg (1), Michael Mann (1). Perhaps no one else has worked with Coppola, Scorsese, Kubrick, PTA and Spielberg – but Cruise has certainly not aligned himself with any one auteur like a Brad Pitt with David Fincher.

Cruise is sensational as sports agent Jerry Maguire in 1996.

top five performances:

  • Jerry Maguire
  • Eyes Wide Shut

from 1983’s Risky Business – the film that took him from being one of the backup dancers in his generation of actors (think of his role in The Outsiders – and he is support to Sean Penn in 1981’s Taps ) to center stage. Cruise is tremendous here even without his iconic improvised underwear Bob Seger dance moment.

I already think I know your answer but I’ll stubbornly ask anyways haha.

Should Born on the 4th of July be in his top 5?

Tom Cruise’s performance and transformation in in Born on the 4th of July (1989) is incredible; he is still young enough to credibly pass off as a teen. The gung ho idealistic High School senior to young soldier to bitter disabled young man who hits rock bottom and finally an anti-war activist. The scene where he wakes up his entire family after a night of heavy drinking and breaks down in front of father is so gut wrenching.

I realize it is not an amazing film from a visual standpoint but you do have Rain Man (1988) as his 4th best performance and you only rank that one a R as well. I think what he does in Born on the 4th of July is more impressive, and he carries the film by himself whereas I think Dustin Hoffman gives the better performance in Rain Man though I think both are fantastic. Cruise’s characters have significant character arcs in both films but the one in Born on the 4th of July is more significant and over a longer time period.

@James Trapp- Thanks for the comment. Feels like a really good performance for him at the seventh slot.

' src=

He is very different in Tropic Thunder haha. Maybe this adds to his range. He was even nominated for a Golden Globe for this one

I’m a big fan. One of my top 5 favorite actor ever. Love his underrated work in the 80s/90s and the sort of Jackie Chan/Jean-Paul Belmondo he became in the 21th century. My top 10 of his performances :

1 – Magnolia 2 – Eyes Wide Shut 3 – Collateral 4 – Jerry Maguire 5 – Risky Business 6 – Born on the 4th of July 7 – The Color of Money 8 – Interview with the Vampire 9 – Rain Man 10 – Tropic Thunder

“There is Magnolia and then a sizable gulf between everything else … and then there is about seven (7) performances that are clumped together behind it virtually tied for second (from the four below on the top five and add Risky Business, Born on the Fourth of July, Minority Report).“

Sounds like a half-step-below version of Max Von Sydow. I haven’t seen Fourth of July or Risky Business, but having Minority Report as arguably your 8th best performance is wildly impressive. I caught that for the first time a couple months ago and I think Cruise is utterly fantastic in that (and that’s atleast HR/MS film for me)

@Matthew – I love Cruise in Minority Report, funny I also watched recently although I saw it around when it came out. It starts out with action star Tom Cruise doing the Tom Cruise running with his usual brash/cocky persona before the reveals about his characters tragic past.

Have you seen Vanilla Sky (2001)? Its quite polarizing but I am a big admirer of the film. It has some flaws but is fascinating and I love Cruise’s performance

I have not but I will add it to the watch list. Thanks for the rec

1. Magnolia – Cruise displaying his full skill set; the brash and confident persona, the hidden vulnerability that eventually comes out, the physicality from the way he moves on the stage to doing a literal backflip, the ultra fast and amusing talking and boasting like he’s Muhammad Ali being interviewed before a major fight. etc.

2. Eyes Wide Shut – some long stretches with little dialogue, Cruise’s character wandering through the streets of NYC in the middle of the night to his near trance like movements during the infamous Mansion scene

3. Collateral – fascinating character study of Vincent, Cruise’s chilling but strangely likeable and charismatic hitman

4. Born on the 4th of July – See my posting above

5. Vanilla Sky – polarizing film and character, I loved both. Amazing opening scene with Cruise plucking out a single gray hair then driving through an empty Times Square, all of this set to Radiohead’s “Everything in Its Right Place”. It really sets the mood and character for the rest of the film

6. Jerry Maguire – haven’t seen in a long time but even my memory of it is strong enough to put at # 6 of the list, it is tremendous, looking forward to another viewing

7. Risky Business – all time great performance as far Teenage/Young Adult sex comedies go

8. Minority Report – starts off like another Cruise action performance but is character instead is quite complex

9. Rain Man – also need to see again sometime but my memory is a great performance though I think Dustin Hoffman was a bit better which is certainly no insult

10. A Few Good Men – a little bit corny at times and with the onslaught of shows like Law and Order and its many spinoffs as well as the CSI Shows, Criminal Minds, etc. A Few Good Men does seem a tad dated now but the final interogation scene with Nicholson alone makes it a worthy performance in my book. Cruise plays to his strengths here

@Drake – Have you seen American Made? Its a 2017 film directed by Doug Liman, who I was not familiar with before although I have seen The Bourne Identity (2002) but that was long ago. By no means is it an essential film but it is actually fairly well directed, its like an Adam McKay film. The narrative pull is actually quite impressive, and Cruise does his usual thing, playing a cocky pilot with all the usual Tom Cruise swagger. What impressed me about Cruise here is that while this is a 2017 film it seems like it could have come out anytime from 1986 (the year of the original Top Gun) to 2017 (the year it actually was released). It just speaks to the longevity of Tom Cruises star power

@James Trapp- Yes, caught it in theater in 2017 and then when it made the home streaming circuit in 2018. Fun little movie and entertaining.

Tom Cruise’s best films ranked:

1.Magnolia(1999)-MP 2.Eyes Wide Shut(1999)-MP 3.Minority Report(2002)-HR 4.Collateral(2004)-R/HR 5.Jerry Maguire(1996)-R/HR 6.The Color of Money(1986)-R/HR 7.Born on the Fourth of July(1989)-R/HR 8.Risky Business(1983)-R/HR 9.A Few Good Men(1992)-R/HR 10.Top Gun: Maverick(2022)-R/HR

11.Vanilla Sky(2001)-R/HR

Praying for a Pitt-esque late career renaissance for Cruise. He was just casted in Inarritu‘s next film, is heavily rumored to be in Tarantino’s swan song, and has openly stated he wants to work with PTA (and auteur’s in general) again!

None of these are remotely close to Production

@Matthew- @Malith is right that these seem like they’re a year or two or more off – but I saw this story, too. Are we sure Cruise is up for this at this point? I’m hopeful- but not so sure. I’m sure he helps secure a larger budget for these auteurs.

@Matthew@Malith@Drake

I am a huge Cruise fan, every once in a while I binge watch several of his movies. His screen presence has always been significant and has not really dropped much. I thought he was great in the latest Mission Impossible.

I think a fair question to ask in regards to any actor or actress is what exactly motivates them. With Brad Pitt I have read before that he likes being involved in the production aspect of filmmaking because he loves being part of a team, he loves being a part of the collaboration process. Fellow actors/actresses and directors love working with Pitt because of this. Tom Cruise on the other hand is known for being difficult to work with. I am not saying that Cruise is a bad person, just much more difficult to work with than Brad Pitt. I would not completely discount the possibility of Cruise working with auteurs again but I am a little skepitcal. Still, fingers crossed

Tom Cruise, Nope, And 11 More Huge Snubs From The 2023 Oscars

How did these potential nominees get locked out?

Tom Cruise in the briefing room in Top Gun: Maverick and Keke Palmer standing on a western street in Nope, pictured side by side.

Dear readers, this year’s path to the Oscars has officially kicked off. With the 2023 Academy Award Nominations now freshly released into the world, the endgame of awards season is truly in sight. As usual, some pleasant surprises were to be had, especially with films like All Quiet on the Western Front and Triangle of Sadness earning some dark horse nominations throughout the field.

But for all of the joy that can come out of 2023’s most surprising Oscar noms , there’s always cases like Tom Cruise , Sarah Polley , and Jordan Peele ’s Nope , where the snubs speak just as loudly. It’s time for the conversation that always takes place on Oscar nomination morning, as those are just three of the 13 cases of snubbery we’re about to discuss. Brace yourselves folks, it’s time to wade through the big snubs that came from the 2023 Oscar nods.

Tom Cruise - Best Actor, Top Gun: Maverick

Top Gun : Maverick was a huge part of helping bring people back to the movies, and the spectacle that nailed its Best Picture nomination was only part of the equation. Tom Cruise’s return to Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell was also one for the books, and a performance that really dug deeper into the icon we were introduced to in the late ‘80s. How that was overlooked is beyond me, and it’s only the beginning of the overlooked gems.

Viola Davis - Best Actress, The Woman King

An unshakable presence in whatever she does, Academy Award winner Viola Davis had people talking about her acting and action prowess with The Woman King . Proving that it’s even hard for a previous winner to land on the ballot, Davis’ performance in director Gina Prince-Blythwood’s historically inspired epic failed to make the final pack. Your guess is as good as ours as to how or why that even happened, as even our own Corey Chichizola saw that promise in our official Woman King review .

Sarah Polley - Best Director, Women Talking

You could have seen it coming a mile away. While writer/director Sarah Polley was nominated for Best Original Screenplay with her Women Talking script, her lack of a Best Director nod is still pretty glaring. Once again, no female directors are in the running for this competition, and this omission seems like the loudest flub. We questioned if 2023 was going to be another terrible Oscar year for female directors , and to be proven right is something that never feels good.

The Women Talking Acting Ensemble

Let’s just knock this related disappointment out of the park while we’re at it, because the lack of acting nominations for Women Talking is just as upsetting. There were a lot of fantastic choices, as Sarah Polley assembled one hell of an ensemble to tell this particular story with. The fact that even the safe option like Frances McDormand , or blazing performances from Jessie Buckley and Claire Foy were all ignored is pretty crazy for a Best Picture nominee.

James Cameron - Best Director, Avatar: The Way of Water

No matter what you thought of the movie, you have to admit that James Cameron is a directing madman for the way he tackles movies like Avatar: The Way of Water . To keep all of those plates spinning, over multiple films, and with other duties like being one of the series’ co-writers is something that deserves quite a bit of credit. But somehow, those efforts on the 2022 follow-up, as well as Cameron’s devotion to Cinema weren’t as noteworthy as his 2009 original.

RRR - Best Picture/Best International Feature Film

Throughout a good portion of 2022 director S. S. Rajamouli’s RRR became a cinematic sensation that was truly a must see. Dazzling visuals, high octane action, and an infectious energy filled the film with a joy that seemed to sweep the land, and nab the catchy “Naatu Naatu” a nomination for Best Original Song. And yet, even with James Cameron himself paying Rajamouli’s film some pretty high praise, this would-be barnstormer missed out on both Best Picture and Best International Film. This may not have ended in bloodshed, but it’s certainly ending in tears.

Decision To Leave - Best International Feature Film

Director Park Chan-Wook’s “romantic mystery film” Decision To Leave is another project that felt like it would have assuredly gotten a spot in the Best International Feature Film category. Between the pedigree of the Oldboy director, and the solid art house buzz that centered around the film, it was a prospect too good to be ignored.

Michael Giacchino - Best Original Score, The Batman

How deep does the snub for Michael Giacchino ’s music for The Batman run? It wasn’t even on the shortlist for the honors of Best Original Score. A rousing sonic reinterpretation of the character often represented in the DC movies canon, words can’t even describe the disappointment that this heavy hitter somehow got forgotten. However, the intro to “A Bat In The Rafters, Pt. 2” would absolutely do the trick.

“Ciao Papa” - Best Original Song, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio

One movie that’s been pretty consistent with its fortunes has been Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio . The good news is that this consistency continued with the Netflix original’s nomination for Best Animated Feature Film. Of course, the bad news is that the stirring yet simple song “Ciao Papa” was not nominated in the Best Original Song category. Consistency only goes so far, we suppose.

Sadie Sink - Best Supporting Actress, The Whale

Imagine if A24 somehow grabbed four of the five Best Supporting Actress nominations this year. It’s easy, even if you don’t try, because three of the slots went to Hong Chau’s performance in The Whale , as well as Jamie Lee Curtis and Stephanie Hsu’s roles in Everything Everywhere All At Once. The fourth honor could have gone to Sadie Sink, as the Stranger Things star landed quite well with critics in The Whale’s overall ensemble. Alas, Ms. Sink’s snub prevented that well-earned potential from happening; but her crucial experience working in The Whale still remains.

Nope, She Said, And The Menu Were Total Shutouts

The field of snubs above is bad enough to send commentators of all sorts into a frenzy. Yet perhaps the king of all of these omissions has to come from the unpleasant truth that Nope , She Said , and The Menu were all total Oscar shutouts. Nope especially hurts, as its critical and commercial crossroads felt ripe for some goodwill between the audience at home and the dignitaries in the Dolby Theatre.

Not to mention, She Said and The Menu both felt like timely dives into current issues, and the former option had previous nominee Carey Mulligan feeling like a runaway nomination. As for The Menu , the sleek and cutting satire seemed like it was having a moment with fans reacting to its twisted tale rather enthusiastically. But as we saw with Triangle of Sadness , there was apparently only room for one scathing societal takedown at the table.

This isn’t nearly all of the snubs that people may have woken up to with this morning’s nominations. It’s only the ones that seemed to cut the deepest and the most surprising. Whomever wins at this year’s Oscars is of course going to be a subject of great debate and discussion. With snubs like these though, that conversation is only going to be all the more heated, as the alternates just might seem like a better choice in the long run. We’ll see how things pan out on Sunday, March 12th, when the 95th Academy Awards air on ABC, at 8 PM ET.

Top 10 Highest Paid Actors in 2023-2024

tom cruise best actor 2023

2023 brought a number of challenges to the acting industry – the strikes, the threat of AI, and the subsequent production delays, to name a few. Nonetheless, the top highest-paid actors of 2023-2024 haven’t failed to capture our hearts with their amazing talent, and they’ve got the paychecks to prove it.

Last year also marked the comeback of the movie industry from COVID-19, marking our summers with the Barbenheimer craze and making us weep at Killers of the Flower Moon for over three hours.

But how much did the stars get paid for their amazing performances? In this guide, we dive into the glitzy world of show business and take a look at the highest-paid actors and actresses of 2023-2024. Let’s find out.

What Are The Highest-Grossing Movies in 2023/2024?

Who has made the most money acting, how do actors get paid, concluding thoughts, top 10 highest paid actors in 2023-24.

Top 10 highest paid actors in 2023

These stars of the big and small screens came out on top in 2023 and aren’t showing signs of slowing down any time soon. Here’s what we found out.

10. Denzel Washington 2023 Earnings – $24 Million

Opening up our top 10 is the oldest actor on the list and the only one who’s been nominated for an Oscar a total of nine times. The 69-year-old star of Philadelphia and The Equalizer, Denzel Washington, made an approximate total of $24 million in 2023 .

Actors with the most Academy Award nominations and wins

Washington’s most recent project was the third movie in The Equalizer franchise , where he starred as the main character Robert McCall and which he also produced. His upcoming projects include Gladiator 2 and The Piano Lesso n.

9. Ben Affleck 2023 Earnings – $38 Million

The star of Gone Girl and Jennifer Lopez’s husband, Ben Affleck, claims the ninth spot in our ranking. The 51-year-old actor, producer, and co-founder of “Artists Equity” made $38 million in 2023 .

The main sources of these earnings were movies that Affleck had produced and starred in , including Air, Small Things Like These , and Hypnotic . Many of Affleck’s projects are joint efforts by him and his close friend Matt Damon (more on him later).

Together, they’re working on several upcoming ventures, including Witness for the Prosecution  and the sequel to The Accountant .

8. Jason Statham 2023 Earnings – $41 Million

The only British actor on the list is the star of the Fast and Furious franchise Jason Statham. The 56-year-old actor had a very busy 2023, having starred in Fast X, Meg 2 , and Expend4bles . There’s also The Beekeeper , released in January of this year.

These high-value projects earned Statham a whopping $41 million in 2023 .

In addition to The Beekeeper , Statham has the new Fast and Furious movie to look forward to fairly soon (titled Fast X: Part 2 ). He’s also producing Levon’s Trade , where he’s also the lead actor.

7. Leonardo DiCaprio 2023 Earnings – $41 Million

Earnings, 2023: $41 million.

It’s been 27 years since Jack Dawson captured our hearts in Titanic , but actor Leonardo DiCaprio continues to shine in lead roles. The star and executive producer of Killers of the Flower Moon has been nominated for seven Oscars, having won one for The Revenant .

In 2023, DiCaprio made $41 million , tying his earnings with Jason Statham’s. In addition to Killers of the Flower Moon , the 49-year-old actor produced Ozi: Voice of the Forest, and We Are The Guardians in 2023. His upcoming projects include producing a biopic about the creator of Atari  and playing Theodore Roosevelt in another biopic , among others.

6. Jennifer Aniston 2023 Earnings – $42 Million

The star of Friends and Murder Mystery 2, Jennifer Aniston, is one of the only two women who made it to the highest-paid actors list and claims the sixth spot in our rating.

Most liked actors and actresses

Her 2023 earnings of approximately $43 million come from the popular Netflix comedy Murder Mystery 2 , as well as her Apple TV series The Morning Show , the fourth season of which is expected in 2025.

Given that the series has been renewed for at least one more season , Aniston is sure to have a busy few years. She’s also working on several other projects as an actor and a producer, but little is known about them.

Top 5 highest-paid actors

5. Matt Damon 2023 Earnings – $43 Million

Kicking off the top five is the Best Picture Winner Matt Damon.

The 53-year-old actor and producer of Good Will Hunting and Jason Bourne fame had a great year in 2023, playing Leslie Groves in Oppenheimer and Sonny Vaccaro in Air . The roles managed to help him earn a significant amount , totalling around $43 million for the year.

As an actor, Damon is expected to star in several thrillers in the coming years, including The Instigators and Animals . He’s also producing an adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Witness for the Prosecution .

Needless to say, many of these projects feature members of the Affleck family, given Damon’s many years of friendship with Ben Affleck (ninth on our list). So, perhaps, we’ll be seeing both actors again in our 2024-2025 lists of highest-paid stars.

4. Ryan Gosling 2023 Earnings – $43 Million

He might be “just Ken,” but we think that the dazzling performance of Ryan Gosling at the Oscars alone more than warrants the actor’s paychecks.

The 43-year-old Barbie star is fourth on our list, having earned $43 million in 2023 – the same as Matt Damon.

Although we don’t yet know if we’ll ever see a Barbie sequel, the Oscar-nominated Canadian heartthrob has plenty to be excited about in the coming years. He’s producing and starring in a space adventure Project Hail Mary and is signed on as an executive producer for the horror movie Wolf Man . Ryan Gosling sure has a lot of Kenergy.

3. Tom Cruise 2023 Earnings – $45 Million

In the third spot on our list, we have the star of Mission Impossible, Minority Report, and Top Gun – 61-year-old A-lister Tom Cruise. Although he didn’t star in Barbenheimer, Cruise earned $45 million in 2023.

Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning stats

His earnings largely came from the most expensive Mission Impossible movie to date , which hit our screens last year. At the time, Cruise was also reaping the rewards from his work in Top Gun: Maverick , which came out in 2022.

The second part of Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning is scheduled to hit the screens in 2025, guaranteeing Cruise another significant income boost . In addition to that, he’s signed on to film the first-ever Hollywood movie in outer space .

Would that push his income into the stratosphere? We’ll be sure to keep an eye on it.

2. Margot Robbie 2023 Earnings – $59 Million

One of the two women on the list is the second-highest-paid actor in 2023. The stunning Margot Robbie shines in Barbie , making it one of the highest-grossing movies of all time.

Barbie global box office revenue

The blockbuster hit, combined with her co-producing of one of the most talked-about films of 2023, Saltburn , as well as starring in Asteroid City , earned her approximately $59 million in 2023.

Robbie is also the youngest person on our list, being only 33 years old. Although she didn’t receive an Oscar nomination for Barbie , the movie did incredibly well at the box office . Whilst we still have no confirmation on a possible Barbie sequel, Robbie’s upcoming project , A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, is expected to keep her very busy.

1. Adam Sandler 2023 Earnings – $73 Million

Yes, Miss Robbie certainly deserves the Barbie accolades and the paychecks to follow. However, the highest-paid actor of 2023 hasn’t starred in either of the Barbenheimer movies (like Tom Cruise).

Comedy genius Adam Sandler earned $73 million in 2023, and the secret to his success has little to do with the cinema, hardly surprising given his 16 Razzie nominations ).

A big reason for Sandler’s success is his deal with Netflix . In addition to starring in the comedy sequel Murder Mystery 2 with Jennifer Aniston (sixth on our list) and the dramedy You’re So Not Invited to My Bar Mitzvah , he a lso voiced Leo the Lizard in the animated film Leo , which he also produced . His popular comedy tour contributed to his earnings as well.

We expect that Sandler will also be earning a decent amount in 2024 given his recently released Netflix sci-fi movie Spaceman . Although, given the trailer, Aragog might be the one reaping the laurels.

Box office revenue and best picture winner stats

When it comes to the highest-grossing movies of 2023, it’s no surprise that Barbie and Oppenheimer sit at the very top. The story of the most famous doll in the world made $1.45 billion worldwide .

The story of the scientist who’s changed the world as we know it comes third after Barbie and The Super Mario Bros . Movie , having made $959 million worldwide . Here is the full breakdown of the top-grossing movies of 2023:

Highest-grossing actors of all time

Acting is undoubtedly a lucrative career – if you can break into it. And traditionally, the actors who play the leading roles in films and TV shows get paid the most.

For example, the star of Marvel movies, Samuel L. Jackson, is the highest-grossing lead actor of all time as of 2023 , having earned $5.72 billion in cumulative box office revenue in the US and Canada. Globally, his earnings amount to $14.666 billion.

Jackson is closely followed by his Marvel co-stars Robert Downey Jr ($5.47 billion in North America and $14.4 billion worldwide) and Scarlett Johansson ($5.32 billion in North America and $14.6 billion worldwide).

However, we should remember that the lead actors are far from the only talent shining in movies. For that reason, we’d like to highlight the highest-grossing movie star of all time – who is not a lead actor.

The creator of the Marvel universe, Stan Lee, made $30.6 billion at the box office worldwide by appearing in most MCU movies until his unfortunate passing in 2018. These earnings technically made Lee the highest-grossing movie star of all time.

Like many of us, movie and TV actors get paid a salary , but they often work on a project-by-project basis, meaning they can theoretically be out of work for months (unless it’s a TV show that lasts 12 seasons).

When they’re shooting a movie, they’re paid at a day rate or at a weekly rate, depending on how long they’re needed on set. On the other hand, when it comes to television, a lot of TV actors are paid per episode.

We’ve gone over the top 10 highest-paid actors in 2023 , their cumulative earnings, and the exciting stuff they’re working on. 2023 really was a big year for movies (the Barbenheimer craze alone was worth millions!), and we were glad to see many talented people appreciated for their craft .

It might’ve been a challenging year as well as an exciting one, but we look forward to what 2024-2025 might bring to the screen.

Are you excited to see Gladiator 2 ? How about Roosevelt ? Do let us know what you’re keen to see the most!

The actor and his co-star Jennifer Aniston played husband-and-wife private detectives in the movie.

‘Barbie’ star Margot Robbie made it to the second spot, with an earnings of $59 million. She essayed the titular character in the film and she served as a producer as well.

18 Reasons Why Tom Cruise Is the Best Actor of the Last 30 Years

President and Chief Creative Officer, Grey New York

tom cruise best actor 2023

Tom Cruise is the best actor of his generation. This is a statement I make with zero irony, and a statement that normally causes people to ask me one of three questions:

  • Are you crazy?
  • Are you a Scientologist?
  • Are you gay?

To the best of my knowledge, I'm none of the above. I just think Tom Cruise has made more great movies than anyone else in Hollywood. Naysayers toss out names like Philip Seymour Hoffman, Edward Norton, and Daniel Day-Lewis -- all damn fine actors, but you can combine all their classic films and they still won't add up to the ridiculous body of work Tom Cruise has put together.

Oh, and just to be clear, most of these are pre-couch Cruise. He lost his mind and his talent the minute he bounced up and down like a giddy, bat-shit-crazy schoolgirl on Oprah . Talking post-couch Cruise is like talking post-text Tiger. It's just not fair.

So here are 18 pre-couch reasons why Tom Cruise is the best actor of the last 30 years. Please be open-minded as you read ahead. Don't be afraid to admit some things about yourself as this list opens your eyes to the big, bright light you've been drawn toward since you were in grade school. His glow is so bright, in fact, you've been blinded. Let me remove the glare:

  • Taps : A remarkable introduction into Hollywood for the young actor playing a military schoolboy.
  • The Outsiders : Oh yeah, you forgot he was in that classic coming-of-age story, didn't you? Well, he was. And he wore a lot of sleeveless denim shirts. And if you try to tell me you haven't seen that movie at least five times, or that you didn't cry when Macchio died right after telling Pony Boy to stay gold, you're lying.
  • Risky Business : A young Cruise slides across his parents' hardwood floor in nothing but an oxford shirt, socks, and tighty whities. And a star is born.
  • All the Right Moves : Come on, it's just a good, solid movie -- that you've seen seven times on cable.
  • Top Gun : Mav 'n' Goose. Kenny Loggins. Shirtless volleyball scene. Biggest hit of the '80s. Enough said.
  • The Color of Money : His black T-shirt simply said "Vince." Because that was his name. Let it not be forgotten that Cruise overshadows another great, Paul Newman, throughout the film.
  • Cocktail : Seriously? Yes. Why? Because you've seen it nine times. And if it came on A&E Classics tonight, you'd watch it again.
  • Rain Man : Dustin Hoffman got the Oscar on this one, but it was Cruise's subtle, powerful acting that allowed Hoffman to give his last great performance. Since then, Hoffman has been a bust. Coincidence? I think not.
  • Born on the Fourth of July : Shattering the pretty-boy image, Cruise ages himself and gets out of shape, bald, and paralyzed for this tour-de-force role as a Vietnam vet. Cruise gets his first Oscar nomination, and the movie is nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.
  • A Few Good Men : Did you order the Code Red? You're God damned right I did! We wanted him, and needed him, on that wall.
  • Mission Impossible : OK, it's easy to forget how good this was 16 years ago. But it was the largest grossing film of 1996 and set the mold for all the fast-paced, over-the-top espionage dramas like the Bourne franchise.
  • Jerry Maguire : OK, this one I don't love, but it cannot be ignored on this list, as it got Cruise his second Oscar nomination for Best Actor. And like a great athlete, Cruise made those around him better. Never before or after would Cuba Gooding Jr. do anything that wasn't appalling and offensively bad. But under the tutelage of Cruise, the man won an Academy Award. It's like this: Scottie Pippen won six rings. Do we think that had something to do with him playing alongside Jordan? And yes, I just called Tom Cruise the Michael Jordan of acting. Boom!
  • Eyes Wide Shut : Arguably Cruise's most nuanced and brilliant piece of acting. An underrated gem of a film, carried from start to finish by Cruise. And the "Fidelio" orgy scene.
  • Magnolia : As motivational speaker Frank T.J. Mackey, Cruise steals every scene he's in and proves he can do humor with the best of 'em. The film gets an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.
  • Vanilla Sky : See it again. Trust me.
  • Minority Report : You've seen it. You love it. And you'll never forget that scene where he moves the hologram files around by waving his hands.
  • Collateral : Cruise and Jamie Foxx turn what could have been a nothing movie into the AFI Movie of the Year. Ninety percent of the action is just the two of them in a cab. And it's riveting. That's acting, my friends.
  • Tropic Thunder : A classic cameo role that will not soon be forgotten. Cruise flexes his comedy skills like never before.
  • His scientology video: Yes, the one that accidentally went viral online. This is pure, unadulterated, mind-blowing genius. If he's acting, it's the role of a lifetime. If he's not acting, it's amazing that someone this fucking crazy can become a megastar, let alone function in the everyday world.

I know, I know. You can see more clearly now. You're welcome.

From Tom Cruise to Dwayne Johnson, these are the highest-paid actors in 2023.

You know how the old adage goes, “You’ve got to spend money to make money”? Apparently, Hollywood has been sipping on that wisdom like it’s a mid-afternoon kale smoothie. And why wouldn’t they? The endgame has always been ‘box office gold’, and for that, they’re willing to shell out some serious dollars.

Welcome to the glitzy world of Hollywood’s biggest money makers. We’re here to spill the tea (or should I say, the dollar bills) on the crème de la crème of the acting world: the highest-paid actors of 2023. These screen legends aren’t just raking in the dough; they’re swimming in it, Scrooge McDuck-style. So, grab your popcorn, sit back, and prepare to be dazzled by the outrageous fortunes of these showbiz powerhouses.

But let’s not forget, behind all the glitz and glamour lies undeniable talent. These actors didn’t just stumble upon their colossal paychecks; they’ve honed their craft, captured our hearts, and made us laugh, cry, and gasp in awe. Quickly then, the top 10 highest-paid actors of 2023 — men who’ve been laughing all the way to the bank, one blockbuster at a time.

Highest-Paid Actors (2023)

1. tom cruise.

tom cruise best actor 2023

Tom Cruise, Hollywood’s resident daredevil, doesn’t just earn his hefty paycheck, he literally jumps, runs, and hangs off planes for it. Who could forget the iconic building leap in ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ that broke his ankle, which he finished in true Cruise style?

With the release of Top Gun: Maverick in theaters worldwide in 2022, Tom Cruise has once again proved he’s the undisputable king of Hollywood. I t became the highest-grossing film of 2022 thanks to the charisma and talent Cruise brought to the role of Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. It’s justified then that Cru ise was paid a whopping $ 100 million for the film, earning him the status of the highest-paid actor.

His reputation as an action star has been solidified by roles in movies like Top Gun (1986) and the Mission Impossible series (1996–2016). But very few people remember some of his serious roles as an actor with depth and substance in films like Rain Man (1988), Born on the Fourth of July (1989), and Magnolia (1999).

2. Will Smith

tom cruise best actor 2023

2022 was a significant year for Will Smith. He won three major awards — the Academy Award, BAFTA, and Golden Globe Award as Best Actor. His portrayal of Richard Williams in the biographical sports drama King Richard (2021) was a rare accomplishment. It’s proof of his ability to pull off any role with proficiency.

The second highest-paid actor this year, he has multiple awards under his belt. For his upcoming show Emancipation on Apple TV+, Will Smith was paid a staggering $35 m illion.

From the ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ to the prince of Hollywood’s highest earners, Smith’s journey is as compelling as his performances.

3. Leonardo DiCaprio

tom cruise best actor 2023

Leonardo DiCaprio doesn’t just go for the Oscar, he goes for the paycheck too. The Titanic star has been a constant high earner in Hollywood. The actor teams up with Martin Scorsese in the upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon, slated for an October release. The actor has been paid $30 million.

DiCa prio’s journey as an actor, from a television commercial to blockbuster movies, exemplifies how conviction and grit can pay off. From Arnold Grape in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (for which he nabbed an Oscar nomination in 1994) to Dr. Randall Mindy in Don’t Look Up (2021), he gets into the skin of any character with eas e.  He won his first and long-due Academy Award for Best Actor for   The Revenant (2015).

Trivia alert: Leo turned down the role of Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequels. We’ll leave you to ponder that what-if!

4. Brad Pitt

highest paid actors

Brad Pitt is one of few actors who has dabbled across genres with zeal and sensitivity. His production house, Plan B Entertainment, has helmed movies that won and were nominated for various reputed awards. For playing a stuntman Cliff Booth in Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Pitt will be collaborating with Joseph Kosinski of Top Gun: Maverick fame for a film on formula one racing. The film is untitled at this moment. Brad Pitt been paid a whopping $30 million for the project.

5. Dwayne Johnson

tom cruise best actor 2023

Who could have imagined that a professional wrestler with the moniker ‘The Rock’ would become a famous star in Hollywood ? Dwayne Johnson’s bold decision to act in films cata pulted him to success and fame. He also has his name carved on the Hollywood Walk of Fame star. However, Dwayne Johnson is b est known for his role in The Fast and the Furious franchise .

For playing the titular role in the film Black Adam (2020), Dwayne Johnson was paid $22.5 million. He also co-produced the film. His rigorous effort to promote the film on social media is also the reason for its global success, gro ssing a total of $166.8 million at the box office worldwide.

The Rock continues his reign atop the fiscal mountain, amassing a vast fortune from his movie roles and numerous endorsement deals. Fun fact: Did you know that this former wrestler’s breakthrough movie was The Scorpion King (2002), which netted him a then record-breaking $5.5 million? Fast forward to 2023, and he’s eclipsing that figure like a total champ.

6. Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds

tom cruise best actor 2023

Will Ferrell ha s consistently opted for comedy roles in films since his debut as an uncredited cameo of a Newscaster in Criminal Hearts (1996). He’s among the few American comedy actors who’ve done good business at the box office since the mid-1990s. They are known as Frat Pack.

Ryan Reynolds, on the other hand, began his career working in teen comedies. His claim to fame is his titular role in the Deadpool Franchise. His performance in Deadpool (2016) earned him a Golden Globe Awards nomination.

Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds were paired together in Spirited. The duo was paid $20 million each.

7. Chris Hemsworth

highest paying actors

Hemsworth gained popularity in 2011 as he became a member of the MCU . Later in his career, he would receive unprecedented success playing Thor . It seems Thor’s hammer isn’t just good for saving the universe. Hemsworth, thanks to his role as the God of Thunder and his other ventures, is seventh on our list.

Chris Hemsworth worked in television for a good length of his career to hone his skill as an actor. His first appearance was in the opening scenes of Star Trek (2009). He played the role of George Kirk in a special appearance. 2021 proved to be crucial for his career. For his performance as Tyler Rake in the Netflix action thriller Extraction , he was lauded by critics and viewers alike. Now for the film’s sequel, he’s been paid $20 million.

A bit of trivia for you: Hemsworth almost lost the Thor role to his younger brother, Liam. Well, there’s a family dinner conversation!

8. vin diesel .

tom cruise best actor 2023

Diesel, the deep-voiced action star known for ‘Fast & Furious’, makes the cut, proving that there is indeed big money in playing with fast cars and huge explosions.

Mark Sinclair, popularly known as Vin Diesel, made his debut playing the character of Orderly in his first American drama, Awakenings (1990). However, his name didn’t appear in the credits. He also briefly appeared as a soldier in Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan (1998). His humble beginnings would eventually lead him to become one of the most popular action movie stars globally.

Diesel earned fame as an action hero by starring in two movie franchises : the Fast and the Furious and The Chronicles of Riddick. For the next installment of The Fast and the Furious , titled Fast X, Diesel is being paid $20 million.

Trivia Time: He’s also a successful producer and once broke a YouTube record for the most viewed video in 24 hours for his song Feel Like I Do .

9. Tom Hardy

tom cruise best actor 2023

An alumnus of Drama Centre London, Tom Hardy made his debut as a soldier in Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down (2001). He’s worked with some of the most acclaimed filmmakers of world cine ma, including Nicolas Winding Refn, Alejandro G. Iñárritu, and Christopher Nolan. His performances have earned him nominations at various reputed award functions.

His p ortrayal of a man c aught in the turmoil of emotional upheaval in the psychological drama Locke (2013) won him critical acclaim. But he became globally popular for playing the role of both Eddie Brock and the titular role in the Marvel franchise Venom (2018) and its sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021 ), respectively. For the third instalment in the Venom 3 series , Tom Hardy  been paid $20 million.

10. Joaquin Phoenix

tom cruise best actor 2023

Rounding up our list is Joaquin Phoenix, who, after his acclaimed role in Joker , has seen a significant upswing in his paychecks.

Like his contemporaries , Phoenix too began his career in television. He made his debut as Frankie in the TV movie Kids Don’t Tell (1985). [Fun fact: Phoenix went by the name Leaf in his early career to fit in with his nature-named siblings]. However, it was his role as the dictator Commodus in Gladiator (2000) that made him a known face globally. Since then, he’s had the chance to work with niche directors like PT Anderson, Lyne Ramsay, and Spike Jonze, among others.

In 2020, he won the Oscar for Best Actor for pl aying Arthur F leck in Joker (2019). It created history by becoming the first R-rated film to gross over $1 billion  at the box office.  For the sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux , Phoenix will be paid $20 million.

Guess, Joaquin is now laughing ‘leaf-fully’ to the bank!

There you have it, the top 10 actors who’ve been flexing their box-office muscle and keeping their accountants on their toes in 2023. These actors have a knack for turning roles into gold mines, and it’s no surprise their bank accounts are as glamorous as their red-carpet appearances. Remember, though, the real treasure is their performances, even if they do come with a price tag.

All the above figures are according to Insider .

Tom Cruise Flashes His Abs While Scaling the Hollywood Sign in Los Angeles

Tom Cruise was seen hanging from the beams of Los Angeles' famous Hollywood sign while accompanied by a film crew on Saturday

NATO / BACKGRID

Tom Cruise appears to have found a new iconic location to pull off his famous stuntwork.

On Saturday, Cruise, 61, was seen with a film crew at the Hollywood Sign in Los Angeles' Hollywood Hills as the Top Gun: Maverick star scaled the famed landmark.

The actor wore an all-black t-shirt, pants and shoes for the shoot and at one point flashed his abs from underneath his shirt. Largely thanks to his long-running Mission: Impossible series, Cruise has become synonymous with the dangerous stunts seen in the action-packed films.

A representative for Cruise did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment Monday. It's unclear what Cruise was filming on Saturday.

Cruise last appeared onscreen in Mission: Impossible—Dead Reckoning , which brought back his character Ethan Hunt for a seventh entry in the long-running Mission: Impossible series. The movie made $172 million at the domestic box office and also received two nominations at the recent 96th Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound.

A title for the eighth film in the series has not yet been announced.

Cruise also has several other projects in development. In February, PEOPLE confirmed that he will star in the next movie from filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu ( The Revenant, Birdman ), and The Hollywood Reporter reported in January that Top Gun 3 is in development at Paramount, with Maverick filmmaker Joseph Kosinski in talks to direct a follow-up to 2022's highest-grossing movie.

The actor has also been planning to film a movie in outer space for a number of years now as part of a project first announced by NASA back  in 2020. Doug Liman, the filmmaker with whom Cruise made 2014's  Edge of Tomorrow  and 2017's  American Made , is directing that movie . Universal Pictures executive Donna Langley shared in a 2022 BBC news interview that Cruise plans to become the " first civilian to do a space walk outside of the [International] Space Station " as part of the untitled film.

“We’ve been working on it diligently,” Cruise told Variety in July 2023, when asked for an update on the project. “We’ll see where we go.”

Tom cruise-wbd deal can’t hurt his $8 billion relationship with paramount.

When word broke in January that Tom Cruise signed a deal to develop original and franchise pictures with Warner Bros. Discovery, including having an office for the actor’s Cruise/Wagner Productions company on the WBD lot, many ask if it’s a sign all isn’t well between Cruise and frequent collaborator Paramount Pictures. But while it's a terrific "get" for Warner’s Motion Picture Group co-CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, it can’t hurt the Cruise’s blockbuster relationship with Paramount.

Tom Cruise stars in "Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning - Part One"

The deal with Warner is not even exclusive, nor is it a first-look situation prohibiting Cruise from shopping projects to other studios first. I suspect it’s in fact a preparation for a set of specific projects being considered and/or developed, including some Cruise is bringing to the studio to collaborate on, and a few franchises the studio wants Cruise to appear in (and I’ve a suspicion laced with hope that it might eventually involve conversations with James Gunn and Peter Safran over at DC Studios).

Warner and Cruise will no doubt make some big projects together and enjoy lots of success, if the star-producer’s history of picking winning projects and pairing with the right people is any guide. Edge of Tomorrow , The Last Samurai , and Interview With the Vampire , are some of the films Cruise made in some collaboration with Warner that were critical and/or financial successes, combining for $1 billion in box office.

However, understanding that deal in the context of Cruise’s ongoing relationship with Paramount requires understanding at the math.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning grossed $567.5 million around the world in 2023. After the final Mission: Impossible 8 movie for Cruise releasing in 2025 and upcoming Top Gun 3 release expected for 2026, across every decade for nearly 40 years, Tom Cruise will have been making Paramount an average of $772 million per film in two tentpole franchises totaling $8-8.5 billion.

Few stars can boast similarly successful longterm relationships with a studio and franchises, and this is without discussing the massive merchandising revenue streams behind both franchises, which adds billions more in revenue streams.

Then consider the sales and licensing for TV and streaming worldwide, the soundtracks and shirts, the buttons and collectables, and the rest of the merchandise. We’re talking about money-printing machines, as franchises go.

So at first glance, it might seem surprising Cruise is willing to step outside of that relationship. I saw reactions to the title change for this year’s Mission: Impossible 8 , formerly Dead Reckoning Part 2 , asking if this reflects continued debate about the marketing of the previous film and how to proceed, with an implication the title change and deal with WBD might be tied to those rumors of Cruise being displeased by the studio’s handling of Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1’s release.

But I don’t believe the situation around the promotion and final box office for Dead Reckoning is as big of a deal as some make it out to be, nor are the implications of Cruise’s deal with WBD.

For what it’s worth, I suspect the title change of the sequel from its original Dead Reckoning Part 2 to simply Mission: Impossible 8 may be a temporary place-holding palate cleanser of sorts, to distance it from the impression of the “two-part story” pitch accompanying the first film.

Add a big, new marketing promotion and tie-in merchandising deals and a dynamic new title reflecting the fact it’s (supposedly, but questionably) Cruise’s final performance as Ethan Hunt, and I think audiences will be ready to turn out in numbers closer to what Cruise and Paramount PARA hoped for last time around.

The Problem

The problems faced by Dead Reckoning Part 1 started with the fact 2023 was just a rough reset year for audiences and studios all around. It was the first year we returned to the box office in a supposed “end of the pandemic/return to normal” emergence, but everyone was still making up their minds about how much they were willing to emerge. Audiences had completely changed how they watch movies and TV, and were reorienting themselves toward more home viewing as they got used to it and realized they didn’t miss theaters much.

But the biggest factor working against Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning was its release date. It hit theaters the weekend of July 14th, 2023. And that, unfortunately, turned out to be the weekend before the historic arrival of Barbie and Oppenheimer to take complete control of the box office and combine for a grand total of nearly $2.5 billion as they played through the end of summer, all of autumn, and into winter.

Indeed, Barbie didn’t leave theaters until January of 2024, and Oppenheimer remains in theaters to this day, actually seeing an increase in screens and box office receipts in the aftermath of it’s Oscar wins, including Best Picture , Best Director , Best Actor , and Best Supporting Actor .

So it’s understandable that Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning suffered the unfortunate fate of going up against the two biggest films of the year, in a year that audiences rejected the majority of tentpole and franchise releases.

However, after all films saw large declines the weekend Barbie and Oppenheimer debuted, the Mission: Impossible sequel declined a more blockbuster-typical 64%. Not a big hold, but avoiding a sizable drop in the face of overwhelming competition.

The second weekend of the so-called “Barbenheimer” phenomenon is where things really get interesting, though. Dead Reckoning only suffered a 45% drop its third North American weekend against Barbie and Oppenheimer (which both once again dominated with massive numbers). And then, on its fourth weekend, Dead Reckoning only dropped about 38%. And then 30%.

Again, that’s just domestically. Internationally, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning performed even stronger, and those legs carried it to nearly $400 million in foreign receipts alone.

The Potential

Which is all to say, what might Dead Reckoning have grossed if it wasn’t up against two record-setting blockbusters that dominated the box office for half the year during a pandemic faux-recovery year?

Just a 10% rise internationally would’ve put Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning over the $600 million threshold, and that instantly means the entire M:I franchise has a majority of films that grossed more than $600 million. Add in a 10% domestic rise as well, and we’re talking about $620+ million and a per-film average of $600 million per film, up from the current actual average of $592 million.

That might not sound like much in relative terms, but it means a lot and the optics matter. It’s also important for the complicated “Hollywood math” used to determine various thresholds for backend points and other participation.

I’m betting that, with such sustained audience attendance and final box office of $567 million for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning in spite of the obstacles in its path in the markeplace, Mission: Impossible 8 will surely see more than just a 10% increase over Dead Reckoning’s cume.

At a 20% rise compared to Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning’s performance, the next sequel could finish somewhere around $680 million, and with enough momentum and good word of mouth it could easily top $700 million. Or more, in fact, with that big promotional blitz about it (again, so they say) being Tom Cruise’s final mission against his most dangerous foe.

This brings us back to the original point about how lucrative Mission: Impossible movies are for Paramount and Cruise. The same is true, of course, for Top Gun films as well.

The first Top Gun flew into theaters on a wave of frenzied audience anticipation and scored top grades from critics and viewers, as well as $357 million in worldwide box office. That’s equivalent to $1 billion in today’s dollars, for the inflation-adjusted conscious, which is particularly relevant for these franchises since the film lacked the massive international marketplace and huge premium screens like IMAX and Dolby Cinema with higher ticket prices, both of which drive the biggest annual blockbusters consistently toward $1 billion.

It’s no surprise, then, that Cruise’s continued star power could carry Top Gun: Maverick to greater heights and a $1.49 billion final global gross. At $1.8 billion combined, the two films set the stage for the upcoming third chapter to carry the franchise past the $3 billion line and possibly even toward $3.5 billion if it captures the public’s imaginations and hearts the way Maverick did.

Cruise is a powerhouse global star, one of the few left in Hollywood and perhaps the only one capable of delivering this sort of consistent box office and merchandising success across a span of almost 40 years. He’ll prove that when Mission: Impossible 8 arrives — maybe with a new title — May 23rd this summer. And he’ll prove it again with Top Gun 3 , although we’re still waiting on the arrival time for that one.

But rest assured, it will come. Just as eventual Mission: Impossible sequels will come, probably with Cruise involved or returning after a brief hiatus. There’s an $8 billion partnership to maintain, and Warner Bros. Discovering won’t get in the way of that.

Dan Girolamo

For 40 years, Tom Cruise  has been one of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars. From heartbreaking monologues to death-defying stunts, Cruise has been lighting up the big screen since he slid across the floor in Risky Business . At 61, Cruise has no plans of slowing down, with Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two hitting theaters in 2025.

Cruise went from budding star to acting icon in the 1990s as he starred in nine films from 1990-1999. Several of Cruise’s films during the 1990s feature some of the actor’s finest work, and he even scored two Oscar nominations. From charming dramedies to action tentpoles, Cruise did it all in the 1990s. Below, we rank Cruise’s seven best films of the decade.

Cruise mastered playing the young, cocky hotshot in Top Gun . Cole Trickle falls under the same archetype in Days of Thunder . After dominating in open-wheel racing, Cole jumps to NASCAR, where he quickly forms a rivalry with veteran champion Rowdy Burns (Michael Rooker). After a crash sidelines them with injuries, Cole and Rowdy put their differences aside and become friends. Cole also romances Dr. Claire Lewicki, played by Cruise’s future wife (now ex-wife) Nicole Kidman.

Days of Thunder is not as good as Top Gun , but it’s still a fun sports movie with good racing sequences and a flashy Cruise performance. Fun fact: Days of Thunder is Cruise’s only writing credit. Cruise received a story credit along with Robert Towne, the Academy Award-winning screenwriter.

Considering he’s played lawyers in multiple movies, I wonder if Cruise ever wanted to seek a career in law if acting didn’t work out. Luckily for Cruise, he chose the right profession. In The Firm , Cruise plays Mitch McDeere, a promising Harvard Law School graduate who takes a job with a prestigious firm in Memphis. The firm introduces Mitch to a life of wealth and power. However, the long hours strain his marriage with his wife, Abby (Jeanne Tripplehorn).

Mitch accidentally discovers the firm’s illegal activities, from money laundering to tax fraud and murder. Approached by the FBI to flip on his associates, Mitch knows he’s a dead man if he helps the authorities. Cruise’s fiery persona and star power are a winning combination in Sydney Pollack’s cat-and-mouse legal thriller. The Firm also inspired Cruise’s lifelong mission to become an elite runner .

Looking at how Cruise gravitated toward action in the 21st century, Eyes Wide Shut was one of the actor’s biggest risks. Stanley Kubrick’s final film stars Cruise as Bill Harford, a doctor who is stunned to learn that his wife, Alice (Nicole Kidman), has sexual fantasies about sleeping with other men. Jealous, Bill sets out to look for a sexual encounter.

Bill meets with his old friend, Nick Nightingale (Todd Field), and learns about a masked sex party hosted by a secret society. After attending one of the parties, Bill realizes he’s in danger, leading him to rethink his intentions. Unfortunately for Cruise and Kidman, their real-life marriage ended a few years after this film, and when you read about the difficult production , it’s easy to speculate that it may have played a part. However, Eyes Wide Shut remains one of Cruise’s most vulnerable performances.

Rent Eyes Wide Shut  on Prime Video , YouTube , Apple , or Google .

Cruise starred as a JAG attorney in A Few Good Men. In the film directed by Rob Reiner and based on a script by Aaron Sorkin, Cruise plays Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee, a lawyer tasked with defending two U.S. Marines accused of murdering another Marine on Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba. Kaffee assembles a team, including Lt. Cdr. JoAnne Galloway (Demi Moore), to mount a defense and prove the Marines were carrying out an order from a superior officer.

Cruise’s courtroom scenes are some of his finest acting moments. He brings the proper amount of intensity and ferocity to the courtroom, leading to the film’s climatic scene between Kaffee and Col. Nathan R. Jessup, played by Jack Nicholson . Cruise versus Nicholson in a courtroom , what’s better than that?

Rent A Few Good Men  on Prime Video , YouTube , Apple , or Google .

Magnolia has a lot of problems, but Cruise isn’t one of them. While Cruise was making Eyes Wide Shut , director Paul Thomas Anderson  met with Cruise to discuss working together on a future film. That film became Magnolia , with Cruise starring as Frank T.J. Mackey, a conceited motivational speaker and dating expert who teaches people that life is about “what you take.”

While the misogynistic speeches show Cruise’s comedic chops, the single best scene of his career is when Frank breaks down and weeps in front of his dying father. How the Academy watched that scene and didn’t award Cruise Best Supporting Actor is beyond me.

Stream Magnolia on Prime Video .

The role that has come to define Cruise for the last three decades is Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible . Ethan is an elite agent who works for the Impossible Mission Force (IMF), the secret government agency called upon for dangerous assignments. In Mission: Impossible , a failed mission that results in the death of several IMF agents forces Ethan to go on the run as the government deems him the prime suspect.

Forced to clear his name, Ethan assembles a new team to infiltrate the CIA building and steal an electronic list that could prove his innocence. By 1996, Cruise mostly did dramas with a few action films mixed in. However, the success of Mission: Impossible kicked off Cruise’s run as a global action star who is not afraid to push himself to the absolute limit, even if that means driving a motorcycle off a cliff.

Stream Mission: Impossible on Paramount+ or Prime Video .

Jerry Maguire is Cruise’s magnum opus. Everything we love about Cruise, from his natural charisma and infectious smile to his exuberant energy and undying passion, is channeled into the football dramedy Jerry Maguire . Written and directed by Cameron Crowe, Jerry Maguire stars Cruise as a sports agent who quits his high-profile agency to start his own management firm, so he can focus on stronger relationships with fewer clients.

Jerry’s only client is Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.), a wide receiver in the NFL who wants Jerry to “show him the money.” Jerry’s only employee is Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger), a single mother and eventual love interest. Cruise turns his movie star charm up to 10 in Jerry Maguire . And yes, Tom, you had us at hello, too.

In 1996, Tom Cruise starred in two movies. One of those movies, Jerry Maguire, earned the actor his second Oscar nomination. The other film was Mission: Impossible, a film that drastically changed the course of his career. As Ethan Hunt, Mission: Impossible elevated Cruise into a bonafide action star, as he started his transition from dramatic and comedic movies to more action and sci-fi films.

Thirty years later, the Mission: Impossible franchise remains one of the most consistent series in Hollywood. Mission: Impossible continues to raise the stakes with each entry as Cruise risks his life with each death-defying stunt, all in the name of entertainment. Before Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, we have a task for you to complete. When it comes to television, one of the biggest reasons modern audiences come back to watch certain shows is their characters. But sometimes, the villains of the series have made viewers want to tune in to the next episode more than the heroes did.

Whether they be ruthless crime lords, destructive supervillains, or just plain old jerks, television has presented audiences with some of the most despicable characters in pop culture, and these evildoers are good at their jobs. 10. Vecna from Stranger Things (2016-present)

Who Are the World’s Highest-Paid Actors This Year?

T he entertainment industry is known for its high salaries and flashy lifestyles. Each year, Forbes releases a list of the highest-paid actors, giving us a glimpse into the financial success of our favorite Hollywood stars. Curious to know who made the cut this year? Keep reading to find out who are the world’s highest-paid actors in 2023.

Margot or Cilian? Are They the Highest-Paid Actors This Year?

In 2023, the film industry saw the dominance of two major releases, “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” which were released on the same day in July. These films not only dominated the box office but also garnered critical acclaim, sparking discussions in essays and op-eds. At the Oscars, “Oppenheimer” is predicted to sweep major categories including Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture. Despite the success of these blockbusters, other entertainment options thrived throughout the year, with Netflix’s engagement report indicating significant time spent watching Adam Sandler movies.

Who Is the Highest-Paid Actor This Year?

Since signing a $250 million four-picture deal with Netflix in 2014, Adam Sandler, now 57, has been prolific, starring in eight movies for the streaming giant and producing more through his Happy Madison production company. Additionally, the majority of his comedy catalog is now licensed to Netflix. In the first half of 2023 alone, Netflix subscribers spent over 500 million hours watching Sandler’s movies.

Netflix has expressed unwavering support for Sandler, exemplified by co-CEO Ted Sarandos stating, “There’s no such thing as too much Sandler.” Sandler enjoys creative freedom under his lucrative contract, which includes filming in exotic locations for projects like “Murder Mystery 2” with Jennifer Aniston. In 2023, Sandler released three films, including one starring his wife and daughters, along with an animated feature. Combined with numerous stand-up comedy shows, Sandler earned an estimated $73 million, making him the highest-paid actor of the year by a significant margin.

What About Other Highest-Paid Actors?

Besides Adam Sandler’s accomplishments, these actors are close to the first place:

Second Place – Margot Robbie ($78 Million Gross)

“Barbie” became a cultural phenomenon last July, grossing $1.45 billion worldwide along with significant revenue from licensing and partnerships. Margot Robbie, both the producer and star of the film, earned approximately 12.5% of back-end profits, estimated by Forbes to exceed $60 million. Her production company, LuckyChap, gained prominence with the success of “Barbie” and the previous year’s satire “Saltburn.” Robbie solidified her relationship with Warner Bros. by signing an exclusive first-look deal with the studio, which produced “Barbie.”

Third Place – Tom Cruise ($53 Million Gross)

At 61, Tom Cruise defies conventional wisdom in both his daring stunt work and his approach to compensation. He remains one of the last actors to secure a “first-dollar gross” deal, earning a percentage of box office and other revenues from the day of release, regardless of the studio’s profit recovery. In 2023, he capitalized on the latest “Mission: Impossible” installment and continued to earn from streaming and on-demand profits for “Top Gun: Maverick” from 2022. Despite industry changes, studios remain eager to collaborate with Cruise, as evidenced by his new development deal with Warner Bros. signed in January.

Fourth Place – Ryan Gosling ($50 Million Gross)

Despite playing the role of Ken, Ryan Gosling’s supporting performance in the year’s top film earned him an Oscar nomination and one of the most significant paychecks of his career. Additionally, his power ballad from the movie, “I’m Just Ken,” has garnered over 100 million streams on Spotify, further contributing to his success.

Fifth Place – Matt Damon ($50 Million Gross)

There’s considerable anticipation within Hollywood for the success of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity studio, which aims to empower crew members and other behind-the-scenes talent by allowing them to share in the profits of their projects. Their debut film, “Air,” starring Damon and directed by Affleck, was sold to Amazon for an estimated $130 million before production even began—far exceeding the movie’s budget and ensuring ample profits to distribute. Additionally, Affleck, aged 53, opted for a modest $4 million salary for his supporting role in “Oppenheimer,” significantly lower than his usual rate, in exchange for a stake in the film’s substantial profits.

Where Does the Money Lie?

Starring in a hit theatrical movie remains Hollywood’s ultimate prize, unlike Netflix’s upfront payment model. Successful theatrical releases can generate continuous revenue, providing actors with profit participation and indefinite earning potential. For instance, Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s leads in “Barbie,” rank highly on the top earners list due to box office, VOD, and initial streaming earnings, with their total compensation likely to surpass initial estimates. Margot Robbie’s success stands out, being the youngest on the list at 33, while most others are over 52, benefitting from residuals and established salary precedents. This means top stars can expect their earnings to match or exceed those of their previous projects.

There Are Still Challenges

The entrenched salary structures in Hollywood pose challenges for younger actors and actors of color to break into the top tier. In 2023, only one actor of color, Denzel Washington, made it to the top 10 earners list. Factors contributing to this disparity include the absence of major releases from perennial highest-paid Black actors like Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Will Smith, Eddie Murphy, Jamie Foxx, and Samuel L. Jackson, who focused on other ventures or worked predominantly on streaming platforms with capped potential upside. Additionally, blockbuster movies featuring Black, Asian, and Hispanic actors remain scarce, further limiting opportunities for diverse representation at the highest earning levels.

What Is Next for 2024?

The 2024 ranking of highest-paid actors is expected to see significant changes, reflecting the evolving release calendar. While Margot Robbie, Tom Cruise, and Leonardo DiCaprio move on to new projects, the upcoming theatrical slate features anticipated releases like Will Smith in “Bad Boys 4,” Eddie Murphy in “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” and Ryan Reynolds in “Deadpool 3.” Additionally, young talents from “Dune 2” such as Zendaya, Austin Butler, and Anya Taylor-Joy will be leading multiple films. Furthermore, blockbuster TV shows like “Yellowstone,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and “The Bear” will contribute to the earnings mix, adding further diversity to the rankings.

Tom Cruise offers 'to fly Mission Impossible cast and crew over closed M25'

tom cruise best actor 2023

Tom Cruise reportedly plans to avoid traffic chaos amid the M25 closure by flying his Mission Impossibe cast and crew over the bottleneck in a helicopter.

The 61-year-old actor is a trained pilot and The Sun reported on Friday that he is prepared to fly cast and crew to Longcross Studios to help progress filming of the eighth Mission Impossible film.

Cruise has been working at the filming location this week to try and meet a 2025 deadline for the next film, where he will again play agent Ethan Hunt, according to The Sun. The seventh film, Dead Reckoning Part One came out last year .

Longcross is near junctions 10 and 11 of the M25 - where the motorway is closed this weekend - and the nearby railway station is one of the least used in Surrey .

Cruise has reportedly readied a helipad at Battersea in south west London .

The need for action follows on from filming in Derby.

Production on MI:8, which has not been officially given a title but is likely to be called Dead Reckoning Part Two, was beset by delays due to the Hollywood writers’ strike.

Neither Cruise nor Longcross Studios have confirmed the action but fans were quick to point out the similarity between this and the response that Ethan Hunt might have favoured.

“Love him or hate him, Tom Cruise got b*lls,” one said.

One simply tweeted: “No mission impossible!”

Cruise is well known for his stunts in the Mission Impossible and Top Gun franchises - and even in his 60s remains committed to performing himself without a double.

The Evening Standard has approached Longcross Studios for comment.
