Ms Maud Hurtigruten

Norwegian expedition line, Hurtigruten , has today announced nine new no-fly cruises that will depart from Dover in 2022/23.

These new voyages range from 11 to 22-day sailings onboard the newly refurbished MS Maud . Destinations will include popular no-fly ports in the Norwegian Fjords, the North Cape and Lofoten Islands. The longest of these voyages will cruise the coast of Norway along the classical Hurtigruten route and visit the stunning Svalbard archipelago, promising unrivalled views of the Northern Lights on route.

Hurtigruten has already scheduled five itineraries from Dover that include a British Isles adventure.

UK General Manager, Anthony Daniels referred to the growing demand for no-fly cruises in his launch comment:

“Since launching our Dover departure sailings, we’ve seen an increased demand and appetite for no-fly cruises that venture closer to home… We’re delighted to be expanding on our inaugural Dover season with a series of new and unique itineraries offering our guests the opportunity to experience the Norwegian coastline and beyond like never before.”

Hurtigruten Releases Details Of New 2021/2022 Expedition Cruises From Dover

Author: Isabella Sullivan

Published on: 15 October 2020

Updated on: 25 July 2022

Hurtigruten has announced a series of 2021 and 2022 expedition cruises from Dover, sailing the British Isles, Norway and Southern Scandinavia

In-keeping with demand for no-fly cruises and British Isles sailings , Hurtigruten has announced details of its series of 2021 and 2022 expedition cruises from Dover.

The cruise line will run a series of adventurous sailings from the Kent port next year aboard its newly refurbished ship MS Maud, with the expedition brochure out today.

The cruises will give British travellers the chance to cruise without having to pass through an airport or catch a flight, with sailings departing from Dover.

Passengers will be able to choose from sailings around the British Isles, but also sailings to Norway. For the first time in Hurtigruten's 127-year-old history, the line will also sail from Dover to Southern Scandinavia.

On offer are 13- and 15-day round-trips, which will see the shiny newly refurbished ship sail to destinations like the Norwegian Fjords, Norwegian Lofoten Islands, known for their dramatic peaks, and Rathlin Island – home to the largest seabird colony in Northern Ireland.

Sweden's Koster Islands are also possible to cruise to, with some sailings even heading beyond the Arctic Circle for passengers to see the skies dance with the Aurora Borealis.

Ready to resume sailings, MS Maud carries 530 passengers in stylish and sustainable surroundings, with her small size meaning she can reach destinations that many larger ships cannot.

On board guests will find an impressive Science Centre, hosting guest speakers and educational lectures and workshops with the Hurtigruten expedition team

Excursions follow a similar sustainable/expedition theme, including beach clean-ups, hiking, birdwatching, kayaking and zodiacing.

For those travelling to the Arctic Circle to see the Northern Lights, Hurtigruten also offers a Northern Lights Promise.

This means that, if they do not see the lights, they will be able to board another six or seven-day Classic Voyage free of charge.

“We are delighted to launch our new expedition cruises from Dover 2021/22 brochure which will be available to all our travel agent partners," said Anthony Daniels, UK general manager for Hurtigruten.

"There are some incredible itineraries as well as new destinations included that deliver truly authentic adventures for those who are curious to experience more of the world around them.

"Every destination has been handpicked by experts to create the ultimate expedition for guests. From witnessing the spectacular wildlife of the British Isles, the rugged Archipelagos in Southern Scandinavia, to the stunning Norwegian fjords and the mesmerising Northern Lights.

"With departures from Dover and the small ship ambience of MS Maud , we’ve made it even easier for guests to get up and close to nature – something the bigger ships can’t.”

Hurtigruten's brochure is out now and cruises are available to book.

  • Share by email

Expedition cruise line Hurtigruten has launched three new British Isles and Iceland itineraries, with departures from Liverpool and Portsmouth on MS Fridtjof Nansen.

Starting from May 7, 2022, the three new sailings will join Dover and Glasgow departures in offering guests “the chance to experience expedition sailings closer to home”.

Anthony Daniels, UK and EMEA general manager at Hurtigruten, said: “MS Fridtjof Nansen now joins MS Maud and MS Spitsbergen, as Hurtigruten ships homeporting in Dover and Glasgow respectively, in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

“We have seen very encouraging booking trends since the government’s roadmap out of lockdown was released last week, and we look forward to welcoming passengers on board, once safe to do so.”

‘Historic Ports of the English Channel and Irish Sea’ is a four-day itinerary from Portsmouth to Liverpool, via Cornwall and Waterford.

‘Ancient Ties and Natural Wonders’ is a 15-day circumnavigation voyage from Liverpool and taking in Iceland and the Scottish Isles.

‘Half circumnavigation of the Land of Ice and Fire’ is a nine-day cruise that will visit 2,000-year-old Carloway Broch, Scotland’s best-preserved fort, and Iceland.

MS Fridtjof Nansen carries about 500 passengers.

A favourite within our fleet, MS Fram is a purpose-built expedition ship named in honour of the Original FRAM - the world's greatest exploration ship between 1893 to 1912 and has been captained by both Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen during her years at sea. With 119 cabins, she is one of the smallest ships in the fleet and spends her time between the Arctic in the summer (May-August), before heading south to Antarctica for the winter (November-March). Her small size, allows her to bring you closer to nature - and with key expedition features such as smaller expedition boats and Science Center, she is perfect for creating an unforgettable expedition experience.

MS Spitsbergen preview is named after the crown jewel of Arctic Norway – the Svalbard archipelago and its biggest island, Spitsbergen. Hurtigruten has a long history of traveling to Spitsbergen, beginning in 1896 with the 'Sports Route'.

The newest addition to our fleet will honor the heritage of her namesake – the Norwegian explorer, scientist, humanitarian, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Fridtjof Nansen. Known for his innovations in Arctic expeditions, Nansen led the first crossing of Greenland on cross-country skis. He is perhaps most famous for his attempt to reach the geographical North Pole during the Fram Expedition (1893-1896). Interestingly, after Nansen's Fram expedition, the ship was passed on to another great explorer who secretly planned an expedition to the South Pole - Roald Amundsen.
