“The Boxmasters capture simplicity that depicts early rock and roll like Buddy Holly and Bill Haley, only a couple steps away from their country influences, while telling stories about our lives today." Tony Braunagel

billy bob and the boxmasters tour

"Thornton is most famous for his film and television performances, but he’s also a dedicated singer-songwriter, and one of the few actor-musicians who succeeds in both fields.  For nearly a decade, he’s fronted the Boxmasters and turned out rootsy Americana and sixties-style rockabilly." The New Yorker

In addition to being one of our nation’s most acclaimed actors, Bud (Billy Bob) Thornton is also recognized for his musical talents. He has recorded for solo albums: Private Radio, Edge Of The World, Hobo and Beautiful Door. He has also appeared on numerous recordings by other artists, including Warren Zevon’s Grammy winning album The Wind, the legendary Earl Scruggs’ Earl Scruggs And Friends, and Anchored In Love: A Tribute to June Carter Cash. He recently co-wrote the song “The Middle Of Nowhere” with Tony Joe White on his album Rain Crow.

In 2007, Thornton and  J.D. Andrew formed The Boxmasters, to satisfy their craving for ‘60s beats. The Boxmasters have recorded an impressive and diverse catalogue of music that touches on their love of a wide array of influences.

Thorton’s partner J.D. Andrew , a Grammy Award-winning recording engineer whose credits include The Rolling Stones, Kanye West, The Pussycat Dolls, Will Kimbrough, Tommy Womack, Guy Clark, and more.

As a touring band, The Boxmasters have cultivated a rabid cult fanbase across the United States and Canada. Opening for the likes of ZZ Top, Steve Miller, George Thorogood and Kid Rock The Boxmasters have proven to win over large audiences. As a headliner, frequent stops in Kansas City at “Knuckleheads”, Springfield, Illinois at “Boondocks” and “Merrimack Hall” in Huntsville, Alabama have shown dedicated yet still growing audiences. Two appearances at Levon Helm’s “Midnight Ramble” in Woodstock, New York were highlight performances for the band, as well as the “Ramble at The Ryman” that Levon hosted in 2008. The Boxmasters performed on “The Grand Ole Opry” in 2015, another in a growing resume of must-play venues.

During the shutdown of 2020, the recording studios in Los Angeles were closed for several months.  For avid creators Bud and J.D., this was a time to start planning and writing for the day that the studios would open again and what sort of new songs would emerge.  Over the course of the next year, The Boxmasters would record three new albums.  A very personal album called “Nothing Personal” which is yet to be released, “Christmas In California” which was released in November of 2021 and “Help…I’m Alive” which is to be released on April 15th on Keentone Records/ Thirty Tigers.

“It’s been difficult for people to live in this world for the past few years.  Normally you hear someone cry out ‘Help, I’m drowning’ or ‘Help, I’m dying’.  This song is a tongue-in-cheek way of saying, ‘Wow it sucks being here right now. Help…I’m Alive.’  Well, okay, it’s really not so tongue-in-cheek.  I came up with the chorus and melody just walking around the house during lockdown.  It just came out in that moment, just as it is on the record.  I picked up a guitar and Facetimed J.D.” recalls Bud about the creation of the title track on the album.

‍
“This album was really a cathartic release for us.  We were able to be in our favorite place in the world, which is the recording studio.  So we made a joyful noise.  Meanwhile there was a lot of pain and suffering and fighting all around us.  I lost one of my best friends from childhood who took his own life on one of the days that we were recording.  So there are those bits of sadness in these poppy and fun sounding songs” says J.D.
The “2022 Help…I’m Alive” Tour runs from April into June and makes stops in all areas of the United States.  Familiar stops in Kansas City at Knuckleheads, Atlanta, Annapolis, Oregon and California are joined with new venues in Texas, Wyoming, Ohio and Kentucky.   “We were having the best tour of our careers last summer before we had to stop due to the coronavirus.  So we are very excited to get back out there and in front of the fans” says J.D.  “We should have some new merchandise as well as a few new songs from both “Help…I’m Alive” as well as new songs that we’ve been writing in the last few months.”

Breaking News

Local news | cook county clerk karen yarbrough dies at 73, local news | billy bob thornton & the boxmasters get back on the road.

Author

It’s too early for any tales from the road.

“We don’t have any stories yet on this run. I mean, there will be something that happens,” The Boxmasters guitarist and vocalist J.D. Andrew said. “Past tours we’ve had guys fall out of top bunks and fall on the floor of the bus and crack their heads wide open. Fun stuff like that.”

“We have a lot of stories we can’t talk about, and that’s the truth,” Academy-Award winning actor and musician Billy Bob Thornton chimed in.

“Most of them are involving a little too much alcohol consumption of some sort. But we’re generally not young guys. There’s only so much trouble we can get into on the road anymore. We just don’t have the energy for it,” Andrew said.

“Plus, that’s why we also play every single night. You don’t get in trouble when you’re playing shows. It’s when you have time off. That’s when the bad stuff happens. You see it with the big rock star guys and they get in trouble on the days off. That’s why we don’t give ourselves any extra time.”

The busy tour schedule for The Boxmasters includes a May 25 stop at the Des Plaines Theatre, where the rock band will play songs from its catalog as well as newer material. The band is currently touring in support of its 12th album, “Help … I’m Alive” and will play selections from it.

“We also have a few new songs. We wrote about 30 new songs in between the last tour and this one. And finished a whole record and wrapped up the mixing on that a couple of days before we started rehearsals,” Andrew said. “So we picked a couple of those songs that we really liked from the new stuff and we’re playing those as well.”

The Boxmasters actually recorded three albums during the COVID quarantine, with the shutdown giving the band more time to write and record.

“It was actually easier because J.D. has three kids and I have my daughter that lives with me and my wife. So we were just at home and so when the studio … opened up again, it actually made it easier for us to go because we didn’t have the responsibilities that we normally have, so we were able to record a lot. We just got in there and made a bunch of records,” said Thornton, who plays drums and sings.

“Also, I think with the lockdown, in L.A. especially … we felt just kind of like the world had stopped and we could just go in there and concentrate on recording because there was not anything else going on. And plus, it gave us inspiration. The times that we were living in inspired a lot of the songs that we wrote at that time.

“Like ‘Help … I’m Alive,'” he and Andrew said, almost in unison.

The title track from the album, released in April, started as a melody and a line, they said.

“In the beginning we thought that was a humorous title and a humorous line, because normally people are crying for help when they need to be saved. And in this case, it’s saying ‘Help. I’m here,'” Thornton laughs. “Instead of ‘Help … I’m drowning’ it’s ‘Help … I’m alive’ because of the times we were living in. And it wasn’t only the virus and all that kind of thing. It was also all the social unrest and separating people through political means and all that kind of thing. So, we had plenty of things to write about.

“One of the things that J.D. and I, I can actually claim that we’re experts at, is doing songs that sound like pop/rock songs, that have up tempo, happy feeling songs. But if you read the lyrics, they’re really dark,” Thornton said.

“We have quite a few of those. But ‘Help … I’m Alive’ actually has some hopeful songs on it. We’d written one before that called ‘Nothing Personal,’ which was all personal, and that was a little darker, even musically, sonically, it was a darker record with more to do with the isolation and everything with the lockdown.”

The band has yet to release “Nothing Personal,” and so far there is no release date scheduled.

“We’ve recorded records a few years ago that still haven’t come out. We just kind of have to look at what the climate is at the time and decide what we want to put out.,” Thornton said. “A record like ‘Nothing Personal,’ maybe it’s not a record that actually comes out in stores and on streaming. Maybe it’s something we sell to the fans on the website. We try to figure out different ways to get the music out to our fans without wasting an album that we’ve recorded. So we’re trying to come up with some creative ways to get it all out.”

After the tour is over, the band, which is heavily influenced by the music of the ’60s, will continue working on a psychedelic album, taking inspiration from 13th Floor Elevators, Iron Butterfly and early Traffic songs, Thornton said.

“It wasn’t all just weird noises,” he said. “There were some songs that just sounded like a garage band, and that was considered psychedelic music, like the 13th Floor Elevators.”

For now though, they are looking forward to performing live and connecting with fans after the long pandemic. The excitement level people have for live music is unlike anything they’ve experienced before, they said.

“There’s a momentum that we’re feeling that we hadn’t really felt before with the people connecting with the audiences and them connecting with the music and all that. It’s a really great feeling,” Andrew said. “So, knock on wood, we’ve sold out a lot of the shows that we’ve done so far on this tour. Hopefully that keeps up, because it makes us feel good for one, but it also helps with the people that book us.”

The band’s schedule has them performing a concert almost every night.

“Honestly, that’s how we prefer to tour. It costs so much to put a show like this on the road that we kind of have to be playing every day to make sure we pay for everything. Especially with the gas prices right now, it’s really not a great time to be a touring band in a bus,” Andrew said. “We’d rather play music than sit around in a hotel. We love to bowl, but you can get worn out bowling just as easily as playing a show. We just really want to be out there.

“We just want to make the most of it and get out there and play the music and hit an Applebee’s in every city we go to and have a good time,” Andrew said.

It had to be asked: Why Applebee’s?

“They have a bar,” Andrew said. “And you can get a piece of fish, which is pretty much the only thing Billy eats. It’s consistently OK. I think I just coined their new slogan. It’s like ‘Applebee’s, we’re consistently OK.”

“We love Applebee’s,” Thornton quipped. “We wish they’d sponsor our tours.”

The band’s casual dinners reflects its laid back, do-it-yourself nature.

“Essentially we don’t have any management. It’s just me and Billy recording, writing all the stuff as well as taking care of the business. We run our own website and social media stuff as well as our merch. I run that out of my office bedroom out of my house,” Andrew said. “We do it as very grassroots kind of band. It’s not a bunch of support people helping us with this. It’s just us. So if somebody sends a message to the website, it’s actually us that gets the message and responds. There’s not any walls between us and the fans.”

The Boxmasters used to have someone take care of its social media and messages, but found the connection with fans was missing. The band often posts photos from the tour on Instagram.

“We’re gear geeks. We love our wall of box amps and our Ludwig drums and things like that. So if people like musical instruments, we put them on the stage, we’re not hiding behind the computer or anything like that. It’s just guys playing rock ‘n’ roll through amplifiers and drums and things like that on a stage,” Andrew said.

“We just like to show that stuff off, because we’re fans of it. That’s what drew us into playing music, was seeing bands with their gear and roadies with flashlights flashing around on the stage before the first chords hit.”

After two buses with Texas license plates dropped off more than eighty migrants at the Wilmette train station Wednesday evening, the passengers who had traveled across countries to get to the U.S. didn’t know where they were. After a lull at the beginning of this year, the number of buses bringing migrants to Chicago is back on the rise as border crossings have increased. Exclusive: Interview with The Boxmasters’ JD Andrew and Billy Bob Thornton

Matt Bailey

  • June 29, 2019

“We’re not going for hits.” The Boxmasters kick off 41 city tour in NYC on July 2nd

How does one describe the ever-evolving music of the Boxmasters? Part British Invasion, part Hillbilly, all Rock and Roll. Billy Bob Thornton, the Oscar-winning frontman of this group, say calls their early sound, “psycho-billy.”

The group was founded by Thornton and Grammy Award-winning engineer J.D. Andrew, and has been going strong for 12 years. “JD came in to work as an engineer on a solo record of mine called Beautiful Door,” said Thornton in a recent interview.

“During that process, I was asked to sing a Hank Williams song for a TV show. I knew JD played guitar. I said, ‘Hey, I gotta cut this song. We’re the only people here. Let’s just do this.’ And we cut the song, we liked the way it sounded.”

From there, the pair began discussing British Invasion music, and Thornton’s influence growing up in Arkansas. I said, “You ever heard of Chad and Jeremy?’ He said, ‘I think so.’ I played him ‘Yesterday’s Gone’ by them. And we cut a Hillbilly–or maybe you should call it psycho-billy–version of it. That was the first official Boxmasters song.”

It might be strange to hear Thornton, an Oscar winner for writing Sling Blade — which he also starred in and directed — talking about the British Invasion and cutting albums. But the truth is, music was a part of Billy’s life way before Hollywood came calling. He even briefly performed with Porter Wagoner’s band. After all his success in film and TV, Thornton loves coming back to music, his first passion.

Twelve years, some line-up changes, and nine albums later, Bill and J.D. know the Boxmasters’ place in the music landscape. “We don’t need to call in the guy who made the latest three hit records,” explains Thornton. “We know we’re not gonna sell five million records anyway. We’re not going for hits. We’re not going for the most plays on the radio because we know we’re not gonna get that anyway.

Their philosophy is simple, “Just make your albums…for the reasons that you started doing it, as opposed to trying to get a business result.”

This philosophy extends to their live shows, where the evolution of the Boxmasters’ sound is evident in their setlist. J.D. says focuses on their more mainstream music. “It’s mostly songs from the last five years with a few older things thrown in there. But we typically don’t break into the first two records too much because the are so stylized and so different sounding that it can really derail the flow of a set.”

“[Our goal is] to breakthrough with the audience every night. We have a setlist, but if we have to break it up that’s what we’ll do.”

Thornton adds, “We generally play ‘That Mountain,’ a song from my first record that Marty Stuart produced. We generally play that in the encore because it’s an audience favorite.”

“We’ve had our blues brothers moments, where we’re playing at some club out in the country that we have no business at. The old proverbial Chicken Wire place, and all of a sudden we look at each other and go, We better play ‘I’ll Give You a Ring When You Give Me Back My Balls.’”

The tour kicks off July 2nd, and hits major metro areas along with some of those backwoods in equal measure. Fans can buy tickets at theboxmasters.com .

Such tongue-in-cheek music like “Balls” was an early hallmark of Boxmasters music. With their more recent album, The Boxmasters had the chance to get serious, and work with a British Invasion icon. 2019’s Speck was produced by legendary engineer, the late Geoff Emerick. Emerick is known for his work with the Beatles, including Sgt. Pepper.

Speck ’s title is derived from the theme of the album: coming together for the greater good. Without being preachy, each song offers a message. For one, there is a song about homelessness. Billy says the band chose the title because, “We’re all just tiny specks in the universe trying to make a difference.”

We are so excited to welcome Billy Bob Thornton & The Boxmasters to Tomball, Texas to perform on the Main Street Crossing stage. What an honor it is to host you for a live concert with an artist up-close. Buy your tickets and read a little more about Billy Bob Thornton & The Boxmasters below.

Formed in 2007, The Boxmasters have recorded an impressive and diverse catalogue of music that touches on their love of a wide array of influences, but most importantly, the rock and roll of the 1960’s. Listening to The Boxmasters, one can hear obvious odes to the Beatles, Byrds and Beach Boys, but also important to The Boxmasters are The Mothers of Invention, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine and Big Star.

Since forming The Boxmasters, several long-time friends have contributed to the sound of the band, but the core of The Boxmasters has always been Andrew and Thornton. As primary songwriters, the sound of the Boxmasters has been an evolution as the duo constantly strive to find new inspiration, new sounds and new ways of expressing what is in their hearts and on their minds. But at the core, there is a backbeat, a lyric with meaning and music played with emotion.

Billy Bob Thornton's band The Boxmasters come to the Impact Fuel Room in Libertyville

WLS logo

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Billy Bob Thornton is best known as an actor, but he started his band The Boxmasters over 15 years ago. They have released 14 albums.

The Boxmasters are playing at the Impact Fuel Room in Libertyville Tuesday night.

Thornton was barely a teenager when he started a band, but his first love was baseball. His dream was to be a catcher for the St. Louis Cardinals. But he was injured after trying out to play with the Atlanta Braves, and hit the road to play rock 'n' roll instead.

Thornton is originally from Arkansas, and that part of the south still influences his music today.

"Oh absolutely, there's no doubt about it. The south in general is a rich place for music in general. We had a lot of bands and music was the thing for all of us," he said.

"It's always based on 60s rock and roll," said bandmate J.D. Andrew. "We always keep growing and trying new things and ways to write a song or make a sound, so since we started this band I haven't wanted to do anything else."

WATCH: Full interview with Thornton

billy bob and the boxmasters tour

Thornton has taken an extended break from acting to concentrate on music.

"I never think about missing it, really, until I'm there, and when I get there it's like, oh yea, this is pretty cool isn't it?" said Thornton.

And while Thornton and Andrew are Midwestern and Southern guys, don't assume the band plays country music.

"With names like Billy Bob and J.D. they assume we're gonna be singing about trucks and tailgating," Andrew laughed.

"The time to complaint about the volume or the lack of country songs, the time to complain about that is now before you buy a ticket," said Thornton.
