Today we leave the Capital City of Scotland and start our drive north to the Scottish Highlands. As you travel over the Forth Road Bridge, you enter the Kingdom of Fife, where our first stop will be at Aberdour Castle, which is probably one of Scotland’s oldest standing castles, built in the 11th Century. Carry on to Perthshire, the heart of Scotland as its also known. With its many Glens and Forests, we will stop at some off the beaten track for some of those “Kodak” picture moments.

Then we reach the Highlands of Scotland, the real Scotland that you dream about, and our homeland.

Overnight in bed and breakfast in the Inverness area

Today we explore the Highlands of Scotland, starting with the Capital City “Inverness”. An ancient stronghold of the Picts and once visited by St Columba. Hear the history of this city.

We will then visit Culloden, the last ever pitched battle to be held on British Soil. The battle that also changed the Highlands of Scotland forever. Hear all about this from our historian guide and the lasting effects it had on the Highland people.

Overnight Bed and Breakfast in the Inverness Area

Today we leave the Capital of the Highlands and travel down the shores of Loch Ness, stopping at Urquhart Castle, where you will hear all about over 1000 years of history and conflict it has seen.

Carry on down the Great Glen stopping at Fort Augustus to see the canal locks. Onto Fort William, where we will stop to explore for a short time before carrying onto the scenic Glencoe, one of the most scenic and famous Highland Glens. Leaving Glencoe behind we travel across the Trossachs also known as the “Highlands in miniature” and the stomping ground of “Rob Roy MacGregor” one of Scotland’s many famous hero’s. Finally reaching back to Edinburgh, we hope we having given you a short taste of the highlands.

Best time to visit Scotland

Spring: Many attractions are open without summer crowds. Golf courses open in April; the season officially starts in May.

Summer: This is the ideal time for hiking and biking, although accommodations along the most popular routes—such as the West Highland Way —fill up well in advance. There are plenty of events, including the Edinburgh Festival and Highland Games .

Autumn: Changing leaves create arresting scenes in forests—it’s a great time to visit Perthshire , known as “Big Tree Country.” The Edradour and Glenturret distilleries are well placed for combining a walk with a whisky sampling.

Winter: The Edinburgh Christmas Market kicks off in November, and Scots prepare to celebrate Hogmanay (New Year’s Eve). On January 25, pubs honor Burns Night —the birthday of national poet Robert Burns —with a dinner of haggis , neeps (turnips), and tatties (mashed potatoes).

Lay of the land

Cities: Well-heeled capital Edinburgh hosts the world’s largest performing arts festival . The medieval Old Town looms over Princes Street gardens and the New Town with art galleries and chic bars. Glasgow is boisterous and friendly, with a lively music scene. Craggy Stirling , topped by the eponymous castle, was the site of several historic battles. On the east coast, Dundee and Aberdeen pack museums and maritime history into their walkable downtowns.

Highlands: Hikers flock to the heather-bound moors and mountains of Cairngorms National Park ,   overlapping the Speyside whisky-producing region. The landscapes surrounding Glenfinnan and Glencoe have featured in films.

Hebrides: The Isle of Skye is famed for its otherworldly topography. Flawless beaches await on Lewis and Harris . On Mull ,   stop by the colorful coastal town of Tobermory or scale the rugged slopes of Ben More.

Northern Isles: Neolithic sites, including Skara Brae, are scattered across the Orkney Islands . View Viking sites and the eponymous ponies on the Shetland Islands .

Southern Uplands: Stately homes and castles grace the Scottish Borders. Dumfries & Galloway is home to the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere and the majestic Sweetheart Abbey .

North East:   Seek out royal connections at Glamis Castle in Angus, or Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire. Photogenic Perthshire is home to the prestigious Gleneagles hotel and golf course.

Central Belt: Relive the greatest victories of Robert the Bruce and William Wallace at Bannockburn and the National Wallace Monument , respectively. The John Muir Way spans 134 miles of lochs and woodlands.

Getting around Scotland

By plane: Daily flights operate from Glasgow to several Hebridean islands. Flights to   Sumburgh (Shetland) and Kirkwall   (Orkney) depart from Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Aberdeen.

By bus: National Express and Citylink operate buses between the major cities. Buses are limited in the Highlands and Islands.

By train: ScotRail runs most services in Scotland, mostly along the Central Belt. This reduces to a few main lines in the Highlands.

By car:   Driving in Scotland is on the left and requires an international driving permit. Road types include motorways (M), A-roads (A), and B-roads (B). Scotland’s main roads include the A1 from London to Edinburgh; the A74(M)/M74 from Gretna to Glasgow; and the M9/A9, stretching from just outside Edinburgh to Thurso on the north coast.

By boat: Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac) ferries sail to 21 Hebridean islands; Northlink runs car ferries to Orkney and Shetland. Book well in advance.

Know before you go

Scottish languages: Scots Gaelic (pronounced “gaa-lik”) is still spoken by around 60,000 people, mostly in the Highlands and Islands. English, however, has been the main language spoken in Scotland since the 18th century. Though many believe it to be a dialect, Scots (descended from Northern English) is a distinct language , spoken by 1.5 million people.

Hours: Even in cities, restaurants can keep restrictive hours, with some kitchens closing as early as 8 p.m. On Sundays, businesses often open at 1 p.m. and may close by 4 p.m.

LGBTQ+:   Scotland legalized same-sex marriage in 2014. Glasgow hosts Scotland’s largest Pride festival, as well as the Scottish Queer International Film Festival (SQIFF) in autumn.

How to visit Scotland sustainably

Outdoors: Read the Scottish Outdoor Access Code before setting out. Avoid deer stalking areas between July and February. Refrain from stone stacking, which can cause erosion .

Dining:   Farm-to-table—or, indeed, sea-to-table—is easy to find in this nation of farmers and fishermen. It’s increasingly common for restaurants to display ingredient provenance on their menu.

Shopping:   Seek out independent farm shops and sustainable distilleries . Support Scottish artisans at rural markets and festivals, such as the Pittenweem Arts Festival . Check labels to be sure the products you’re eyeing were made in country.

Accommodation and attractions: The Green Tourism certification scheme, which now operates in 20 countries, was founded in Scotland. It assesses 70 criteria, such as ethical production, carbon, and waste. Certified members—including accommodations, attractions, and tours—display a Green Tourism plaque.

What to read

Scotland: A Concise History , by Fitzroy Maclean (Fifth Edition). The former soldier and politician brings bloody battles and national heroes to life. In the fifth edition, journalist Magnus Linklater adds chapters on Brexit and the 2014 independence referendum.

Rival Queens , by Kate Williams. The historian charts the alliance between Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I of England, which ends in devastating betrayal.

Rob Roy , by Sir Walter Scott. The celebrated writer’s classic work takes place during the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715.

Raw Spirit: In Search of the Perfect Dram , by Iain Banks. A humorous travelogue of Scotland’s distilleries, from the iconic to the obscure.

Why You Need To Go: Located under two hours from Toronto, Fergus is a small town with a "rich Scottish heritage" that will transport you to Europe.

The town is known for its boutique shopping, historic architecture and the annual Fergus Scottish Festival & Highland Games, which attracts world-class competitors and entertainers.

The games are said to be the world’s largest gathering of clans outside Scotland and Cape Breton, according to Destination Ontario.

Why You Need To Go: Elora is a popular tourist town located minutes away from the Scottish village of Fergus. Elora also has Scottish roots — it was founded by Captain William Gilkison of Ayrshire, Scotland, according to the Ontario Heritage Trust .

Here, you'll find historic limestone buildings, and stunning natural surroundings, like the Elora Gorge and Elora quarry swimming hole.

The town regularly also hosts fun festivals and events, and has a charming downtown area with boutique shopping and tasty restaurants.

Why You Need To Go: Perth is a charming small town located about an hour from Ottawa.

The town was named after Perth, Scotland, and settled by Scottish, Irish and European settlers.

The town has a notably historic setting, with stone bridges, and heritage buildings crafted by 19th-century masons lining the streets and the passageways that once served as horse lanes.

The town is known for its arts and theatre culture, but also has lots of other activities to offer, with outdoor and recreational adventures including paddling, cycling and sports.

The five-acre Stewart Park is located in the heart of Perth and is a popular place to enjoy the outdoors. The park has "photogenic bridges" and "gorgeous gardens" where you can enjoy a peaceful stroll.

Location: Newfoundland

Why You Need To Go: Newfoundland is often compared to Scotland due to its Scottish roots and similar landscapes.

For a particularly Scottish-looking place, you can head to Gros Morne National Park, a "place unlike any other on Earth."

The national park was created over 485 million years, shaped by colliding continents and grinding glaciers, and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The park features glacier-card fjords similar to that of Scotland (where they're called lochs) like the iconic Western Brook Pond Fjord.

The natural wonder also has tons to offer in terms of outdoor activities, including hiking along the Earth’s mantle at the Tablelands — an outcrop of the Earth’s mantle that was pushed skyward half a billion years ago and is a rare sight.

Why You Need To Go: Kincardine is a small town in Ontario located on the shores of Lake Huron that serves as the gateway to the Sunshine Coast, the Bruce Peninsula, and cottage country, and is known as "Ontario's Scottish destination ."

The town is well known for its Scottish-themed festival , which aims to preserve, enhance, and celebrate Kincardine’s Scottish roots.

The festival takes in July place over three days and features lively music, exciting competitions, cultural workshops, Highland athletes and dancers, the historic Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band, and Scottish food.

Its location on the shores of Lake Huron means that the town is also home to some beautiful beaches, including Station Beach a white sandy beach with sand dunes and beach volleyball courts.

Come for the Scottish heritage and stay here for the incredible sunsets, the historic (and possibly haunted) lighthouse , and beautiful nature.

Location: Nova Scotia

Why You Need To Go: Nova Scotia, in Latin literally meaning "New Scotland," is known as Canada's most Scottish province, and was settled by Gaelic-speaking immigrants from both Scotland and Ireland who made the province their home.

To get a sense of Scottish influence on the province, you can visit the Fortress of Louisbourg, the largest historical reconstruction in North America.

Located on Cape Breton's east coast, here, you can immerse yourself in history as you explore a beautiful coastal landscape, take in the looming fortifications and elegant houses of the reconstruction, and wander original 18th-century ruins.

In present-day Louisbourg, you can enjoy fresh Atlantic seafood, seaside hikes, secluded beaces, and scuba diving among shipwrecks.

Location: Alberta

Why You Need To Go: Waterton, a picturesque town in Alberta sitting on a lake enclosed by mountains, serves as a hub to the nearby Waterton Lakes National Park.

The town is home to deep-blue lakes that make way to staggering mountains and waterfalls that descend through multi-coloured canyons.

In Waterton Lakes National Park, the prairies of Alberta meet the peaks of the Rocky Mountains, wth clear lakes, thundering waterfalls, rainbow-coloured streams, colourful rocks and mountain vistas that will make you think you've left Canada for the Scottish lowlands.

The park offers over 200 kilometres of trails to explore, with short walks, day hikes and even a multi-day trek available.

It's also a great place for spotting wildlife , with bighorn sheep, black bears and elk commonly seen in the area.

Why You Need To Go: Bonavista is a town in Newfoundland anad Labrador located on the Bonavista Peninsula.

The town's name, literally translated from Italian, means "Oh happy sight," a fitting name for the beautiful town.

The town offers a mix of old worldliness and modern ingenuity, with working harbours steps away from coffee shops and businesses operating out of restored historical buildings.

Here, you can visit the Cape Bonavista Lighthouse Provincial Historic Site, one of the few lighthouses in the world where you can still climb up the stone tower and see the same seal oil-fueled light apparatus used in the 1800s.

Be sure to also take a trip to Dungeon Provincial Park, where you can see ocean waves crashing in and catch sight of seabirds like the Atlantic Puffin, and book a sea tour to see whales and icebergs up close.

Taylor Swift to break Scottish record with Murrayfield shows

The pop superstar will play three nights in Edinburgh this June.

Taylor Swift is set to break the record for Scotland’s biggest-selling stadium show when she takes to the stage at Edinburgh’s Murrayfield later this year.

The pop superstar – who has charged fans up to £660 to attend the hotly anticipated ‘Eras Tour’ – will dazzle an even bigger crowd than her ex Harry Styles.

The former One Direction star broke the record for the country’s biggest stadium show when he played to just under 70,000 at Murrayfield last summer.

Edinburgh Council granted organisers permission to increase the stadium’s capacity from 67,130 to 72,990.

Swift will play sell-out shows in the capital on June 7, 8 and 9 as part of her world tour which kicked off last March.

The event was unanimously approved by the council’s licensing board on Monday, March 25 with an additional capacity of 5,860 (8.73%).

With huge demand for tickets ‘Swifties’ had to pre-register just to be in with the chance of accessing general sale which sold-out in minutes, leaving many disappointed.

However for those willing to fork out, resale tickets have been touted for as much as £7,892.

The American swinger-songwriter – currently the world’s biggest celebrity – has sold over 200 million records globally, with a net worth of over $1 billion and an army of adoring fans who “know every lyric to every song” and are “excitable, well mannered and compliant,” a presentation to the licensing board by legal representatives for applicants Scottish Rugby said.

The gender split of the audience is estimated at 20% male and 80% female with the core age group 15 to 25.

Hotels have hiked their rates ahead of the event, with over 20 around the city centre already sold-out over the three dates.

Swift last year described Scotland as “a really special place.”

She added: “Last time I was there the crowd were amazing and I felt like we really connected.

“My dad is super proud of our Scottish heritage he told me that pretty much most of our family can be traced back to Scotland so of course it’s obviously very cool for me to get to perform there as part of the tour.”

She said she would “love to have a vacation in a castle for a couple of nights” adding it would be the “perfect way to end my tour next year”.
