Doctor Home Visits is a service provided by The Western Australian Deputising Medical Service (WADMS) and exists solely to offer patients home medical care both in-hours and after-hours on behalf of their own GP.

‘Doctors Working For Doctors' has been our guiding principle since our inception in 1977 and it is one that we firmly stand by today, almost 43 years later. Our board of members is made up entirely of well-respected doctors who donate their time and experience to create and maintain an ethical and professional deputising medical service for the benefit of Perth’s population.

As a non-profit co-operative, we are one of the oldest and still remain the only 24 hour 365 days of the year locum service, with the call centre also located locally in Perth. The telephones are answered around the clock with a friendly operator always on hand to assist.

Our staff take pride in providing the best possible service to all of our GP members. Not only do we consistently provide the highest level of care to all of our patients, but we are always expanding our visiting boundary and increasing our roster of locum doctors to meet the needs of a growing Perth community.

Doctor Home Visits is also AGPAL accredited under the recognised standards set by RACGP.

If you find yourself with an unexpected illness and are unable to visit your regular GP during surgery hours, please contact your Medical Practice first and they will be able to arrange a home visit where necessary on your behalf. When your surgery is closed, however, simply call us directly on 9321 9133. Our call centre staff is waiting to take your call and assist with providing the convenience of being seen by a doctor - in the comfort of your own home or care facility.

Night Doctor provides aged care doctor visits to patients in care homes across Perth. Our doctors are available throughout the after hours period including in the daytime on weekends and public holidays.

Caring for aged care patients after hours brings a unique set of challenges and Night Doctor leads the way in providing high quality aged care GP services when the patient's regular GP is not available.

We know how frustrating it can be for busy aged care staff having to wait on hold for long periods of time when booking in a patient. So we won't keep you on hold. Your call will be answered straight away and a call back arranged if necessary.

Doctor triage

Our doctors call the aged care staff within 30 minutes of booking (or straight away if there are any immediate clinical concerns) to discuss the patient’s condition. By doing so, initial treatment advice can be offered and a recommendation made as to whether the patient is safe to wait, or whether they must instead visit the Emergency Department (if appropriate for the patient).

Our doctors will also call the patient’s emergency contact or next of kin to discuss their condition prior to attending if the condition is serious. This allows relatives to be involved in the care process at an early stage.

Shorter waiting times

Our waiting times are significantly less on average than other home doctor services in Perth, due to an increased ratio of doctors to patients. We provide the aged care staff with an estimated arrival time within 30 mins of booking and update the staff about any unexpected delays.

Doctor assistants

Our doctors are accompanied on the road by an assistant who is trained to provide clinical support in the visit. By supporting the doctor in the visit, comprehensive care can be provided to the patient whilst reducing burden on busy aged care staff.

Medications

Our doctors carry a large selection of medications to get treatment started, and provide an adequate supply to cover until medications can be delivered by the local pharamacy.

Hospital referrals

For some care home patients, a referral to the hospital for urgent care after hours is necessary. However, a visit to the Emergency Department can be a very stressful experience for a patient, their family and the care home staff.

At Night Doctor, we believe that any decision to refer a patient to the Emergency Department should take into account the wishes of the relatives, and wherever possible the patient and their regular GP.

Before initiating a hospital referral our doctors will contact family members and discuss cases with aged care staff so that an informed referral decision can be made and wherever possible, avoid unnecessary stress for the patient, family and carers.

Important information

If you’re enrolled in Medicare you’re eligible for the Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN). Once your out-of-pocket medical expenses reach the threshold (below) in a calendar year,  Medicare will cover up to 80% of any further out-of-pocket expenses  you have for out-of-hospital medical services that are subsidised under the MBS. You don’t need to register if you are an individual with no dependants. Medicare keeps a tally of all your out of pocket expenses and gap amounts. If you are part of a family or couple you will need to register online – that way you will reach the threshold sooner. You only have to register once.

Billing FAQs

We accept Credit and Debit cards. We do not accept cash. Payment must be made during your home visit.

The Pay Doctor via Claimant (PDVC) scheme allows Medicare rebates to be paid directly to your doctor via a cheque issued by Medicare.

During your home visit, your doctor will ask you to sign an authority form to request your Medicare rebate(s). You will be issued a cheque by Medicare which you must then forward to Perth Home GP so your doctor can be paid.

We are not able to receive funds from Medicare by electronic transfer, as regulations prevent us from doing so as we are not bulk billing for our home visit services.

We require 12 hours notice for cancellation of a home visit or telehealth appointment or a missed consultation fee of $50 is payable.

You will not be able to book with our service in the future until the payment is made.

The reasons why in-hours visit fees are higher is because:

• We only charge you a callout fee and fund the rest of the visit from Medicare
• Medicare rebates available to patients for after hours consults are significantly higher than for in-hours consults.
• Given doctors receive less remuneration from rebates for daytime visits we must charge a higher callout fee to cover costs.

Higher Medicare rebates are available in the after hours period for patients with unexpected illnesses (that cannot wait to be reviewed until the next in-hours period). It is for this reason that we are able to offer reduced callout fees after hours.

Medicare regulations prevent us from billing urgent items if patients are booked prior to the onset of the current after hours period. This is why we must wait until the after hours period before accepting bookings.

Some patients will be eligible to claim medicare rebates for Telehealth.

In order to claim a Medicare rebate for Telehealth you will need to meet one of the following criteria:

• Have had a face to face consultation with Perth Home GP in the previous 12 months.
• Children under the age of 12 months
• People who are homeless
• Patients receiving an urgent after-hours (unsociable hours) service (e.g the consultation occurs between 11pm and 7am and is deemed urgent by the consulting doctor).
• Patients of medical practitioners at an Aboriginal Medical Service or an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service
• People isolating because of a COVID-related State or Territory public health order, or in COVID-19 quarantine because of a State or Territory public health order.

If you do not meet the above criteria at the time of the consultation you are not allowed to claim a Medicare rebate.
