2019 Dodge Journey Overview

Is the 2019 dodge journey a good used suv.

No, the 2019 Journey is not a good used midsize SUV . It has a user-friendly infotainment system, and the first two rows of seats are spacious and comfortable. Beyond that, there really aren't a lot of positives to tout.

However, there are plenty of negatives. The Journey has cumbersome handling, and the base engine is noisy and underpowered. The interior looks and feels outdated, cargo space is below average, and almost no driver assistance features are available. The final stain on this ruined tablecloth is the Journey's rock-bottom predicted reliability rating.

2018 vs. 2019 Dodge Journey: What's the Difference?

For 2019, Dodge discontinued the SXT trim and made the V6 engine available in the base Journey SE. Otherwise, the 2019 Journey is similar to a 2018 model.

Dodge has not redesigned the Journey since its debut for the 2009 model year. Here are key changes for this midsize SUV over the past few years:

  • 2017: GT replaced R/T as highest trim
  • 2018: third-row seating became standard
  • 2019: reshuffled trims; V6 engine became available in base trim

Which Used Dodge Journey Trim Is Right for Me?

The 2019 Dodge Journey comes in four trim levels: SE Value Package, SE, Crossroad, and GT. A four-cylinder engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission is standard, as is front-wheel drive. A V6 engine mated with a six-speed automatic transmission is available. AWD is available in models with the V6 engine.

If you're going to buy a Journey, it’s best to skip the sparsely equipped lower trims and jump up to at least the midlevel Crossroad. It’s the first trim available with some convenient tech features and driver aids.

Each model offered additional features for an extra cost at the time of sale. That means you may be able to find Dodge Journey models with features in addition to those listed here.

  • Dodge Journey SE Value Package: The Journey SE Value Package comes standard with a 4.3-inch touch screen, a six-speaker sound system, a USB port, cloth seats, dual-zone manual climate control, a rearview camera, push-button start, and proximity keyless entry. There are no notable optional features or available drivetrain upgrades.
  • Dodge Journey SE: The Dodge Journey SE gains tri-zone climate control, fog lights, and LED taillights. It's the lowest trim to offer the V6 engine and all-wheel drive.
  • Dodge Journey Crossroad: The Journey Crossroad adds an 8.4-inch touch screen, a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather upholstery, tri-zone automatic climate control, satellite radio, and Bluetooth.
  • Dodge Journey GT: The Journey GT builds off the Crossroad with a standard V6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission, as well as a 115-volt household-style power outlet, an Alpine sound system, perforated leather upholstery, heated front seats, and remote start.

What Does Dodge's Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Dodge offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles six years old or less and with fewer than 65,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale date. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Dodge offers a five-year/100,000-mile maximum care limited warranty. Additional benefits are available, including a 90-day satellite radio trial subscription, a Carfax vehicle history report, 24-hour towing and roadside assistance and a car rental allowance. There are mileage and model restrictions too.

Dodge has one of the weaker CPO warranties among affordable carmakers, according to our analysis. Rivals such as Kia, Hyundai, Chevy, Ford and Honda are all better.

2019 Dodge Journey Versus the Competition

Which is better: 2019 dodge journey or 2019 ford edge.

The 2019 Ford Edge is a much better midsize SUV than the Journey. The Dodge does have a third row of seats, but that's its only real advantage in this matchup. The Edge has two potent engine options and a more composed ride and larger cargo hold than the Journey. It also has more standard and available safety features, as well as available smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Which Is Better: 2019 Dodge Journey or 2019 Honda CR-V?

The 2019 Honda CR-V is a highly-rated compact SUV , and despite its smaller size, it's a better choice than the Journey. The CR-V only has two rows of seats, but it actually has more legroom in the first and second rows than the Journey. The CR-V provides a serene ride, more room for cargo, and a longer list of available features than the Journey. Its optional turbocharged engine feels plenty capable in most driving scenarios, as well.

2019 Journey Performance

How does the 2019 dodge journey drive.

This Dodge provides a smooth ride, even over rough roads, though handling leaves room for improvement. The Journey is less agile than many rivals, and there's plenty of body roll when taking turns.

Avoid the base four-cylinder engine. It feels underpowered at times, provides lackluster acceleration, and makes a lot of noise. The V6 feels more energetic and moves this SUV more easily, though it's still not as impressive as some rival powertrains.

  • Base engine: 173-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder
  • Available engine: 283-horsepower 3.6-liter V6
  • Drivetrain: standard front-wheel drive; available all-wheel drive (V6 models only)
  • Transmission: four-speed automatic with four-cylinder; six-speed automatic with V6

Does the 2019 Dodge Journey Get Good Gas Mileage?

The Journey gets typical fuel economy ratings for a midsize SUV .

  • Four-cylinder, FWD: 19/25 mpg city/highway
  • V6, FWD: 17/25 mpg
  • V6, AWD: 16/24 mpg

2019 Journey Interior

How many people does the 2019 journey seat.

The 2019 Journey seats seven people in three rows. The Dodge's cabin looks decent and incorporates some soft-touch materials, though it still feels a bit dated. The first two rows of seats have plenty of head- and legroom, and they're comfortable. Also, the sliding second-row seats make it easy to access the third row. However, the rearmost seats are pretty cramped, which is common among three-row SUVs.

Standard seating features:

  • Cloth upholstery

Available seating features:

  • Leather upholstery
  • Power-adjustable driver's seat
  • Heated front seats
  • Heated steering wheel

How Many Child Car Seats Fit in the 2019 Dodge Journey?

The 2019 Journey has two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connectors. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the second-lowest rating of Marginal for ease of use, mainly because the tether anchors are hard to find and could be confused with other hardware.

2019 Dodge Journey Features

The Journey features the Uconnect infotainment interface, and it's one of the most user-friendly systems in the midsize SUV class . The available touch screen is a nice upgrade, as it's nearly twice the size of the standard display. One drawback to the Journey's infotainment tech is that connectivity features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not available.

  • Standard infotainment features: a 4.3-inch touch screen, a six-speaker sound system, and a USB port
  • Available infotainment features: an 8.4-inch touch screen, a rear-seat entertainment system, a navigation system, satellite radio, and an Alpine sound system
  • Additional standard features: push-button start and proximity keyless entry
  • Other available features: a 115-volt household-style power outlet, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a sunroof

2018 Dodge Journey

Select a year

  • Lows Cut-rate interior, poor handling, lacks driver-assist tech.
  • Verdict Practical enough for families on a budget, but not worth reaching for unless it's in the bargain bin.

What's New for 2019?

Dodge does little to make the Journey more competitive for 2019. However, the company has dropped the SXT trim and pared down the lineup to three models: SE, Crossroad, and GT. The change means more standard features and options on the entry-level Journey SE, which can now be had with the V-6 powertrain. Likewise, its front and rear ends have sportier styling as well as new fog lamps and LED taillights. All models are now available with Destroyer Gray exterior paint, among the other color choices.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2019 Dodge Journey starts at $24,740 and goes up to $35,140 depending on the trim and options.

The V-6–powered Crossroad model has 19-inch wheels, black exterior detailing, and a bright-chrome front-bumper accent, leather seating surfaces and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and three-zone automatic climate control. The Crossroad inherited these luxury features from the now-departed Crossroad Plus trim without seeing a hefty price bump, and it now represents the best value in the lineup.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Likes: Available all-wheel drive, comfortable ride on the freeway. Dislikes: Dated and sedated base four-cylinder engine, can only tow up to 2500 pounds, poor handling.

The Journey SE and Crossroad trims come with an underpowered four-cylinder engine and a four-speed automatic transmission that's best avoided. Some extra cash can score you a more powerful V-6 and six-speed automatic transmission, but even that combination lags behind the competition when it comes to acceleration. The optional V-6 engine provides enough oomph in day-to-day driving, but you have to rev it out to get it to move. An automatic transmission that's reluctant to downshift further dulls its real-world performance.

There are not many three-row crossovers that are entertaining to drive, so their ride and handling are graded on a curve. Even so, the Journey's ponderous handling and unresponsive transmission leave it far from getting a good rating from us. The last GT model we drove supposedly had stiffer suspension tuning than other trims, but we were unable to detect it. It wallowed in corners with lots of body roll and imprecise steering. The benefit of this softness, however, is a comfortable ride on the freeway. The Journey's mushy-feeling brake pedal undercuts its decent results in our 70-mph-to-zero braking test.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Neither of the Journey's two engine choices are fuel efficient. The four-cylinder engine has the worst EPA ratings among competitors with similar powertrains. The V-6 model with all-wheel drive that we tested did manage to outperform its EPA estimates in our real-world testing.

Interior, Infotainment, and Cargo

Likes: Standard three-row seating, straightforward controls, available 8.4-inch touchscreen and mobile hotspot. Dislikes: Low-quality materials, no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, less cargo space than other three-row rivals.

The Journey's interior is far from upscale, but its simple controls are user-friendly. Getting anyone to fit in the third row—even children—requires those in the second row to compromise their legroom. Cheap-feeling bits such as a plasticky shifter and hollow-sounding interior door-trim panels are especially egregious on the priciest version. Several luxury features including a power-adjustable passenger seat, cooled seats, and heated rear seats are notable in their absence from the options list.

Although every model features an easy-to-use touchscreen, the system has fewer features than many other Dodge products. Likewise, the larger screen is responsive, but we wish Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were also offered here. There's also only a single USB port up front—not great for the device-happy spawn likely to inhabit the back seats.

Practicality is one of the few areas where the Journey shines: its interior is easily configurable and it has tons of cubby storage for odds and ends, even if its total cargo capacity isn't as large as some competitors. You can fold down the 50/50-split third row and the 60/40-split second row to expand the available cargo space, although the Journey offers the least amount of total cargo space of the vehicles in this class. In addition to the expected compartments in and around the console, there's also a generously sized bin under the front-passenger seat cushion, as well as two large underfloor compartments in the second row.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Overall safety rating (nhtsa).

The Journey's lackluster safety report card reveals that it's not the best choice when it comes to sheltering your precious onboard cargo. Its crash-test results are not great, and—what's worse—it offers none of the advanced driver-assistance technology that is expected in other family haulers. The only available safety feature is rear parking sensors.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Dodge's warranty coverage is average, and Journey buyers won't enjoy complimentary scheduled maintenance.

  • Limited warranty covers 3 years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers 5 years or 60,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance

2020 Dodge Journey: Model overview, pricing, tech and specs

Don't stop believin': More than 10 years after it hit the market, the Journey carries into 2020 largely unchanged.

dodge journey models

The Journey is only offered in two trims for the 2020 model year.

The 2020 Dodge Journey is the least-expensive three-row crossover available in the United States. Costing thousands less than its competition, the Journey offers serious value for budget-minded buyers. Unfortunately, that's about where the selling points end.

Dodge originally launched the Journey in 2008 for the 2009 model year, and more than a decade later, the crossover largely remains the same. A notable update in 2011 brought an improved interior layout and better material quality, but otherwise, the aging Journey is the same as it's ever been.

Powertrain and specs

At one time, the Journey was available with V6 power and optional all-wheel drive, but both of those are gone for 2020. Now, the only engine available is an anemic 2.4-liter I4, with 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque. It's mated exclusively to a four-speed automatic transmission which, for a 2020 model year vehicle, is downright archaic.

Unfortunately, this low-powered engine doesn't result in any fuel economy benefits. The EPA rates the 2020 Journey at 19 miles per gallon city, 25 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined. For reference, a larger, three-row 2020 Honda Pilot offers a substantially more powerful V6 engine and returns 19 mpg city, 27 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined.

The Journey's cabin is best described as being functional above all. The base SE Value trim comes with cloth seats, while the Crossroad has leather. Every Journey comes standard with three rows of seats, which fold flat to offer generous cargo accommodations. The second row has a 40/60 split, while the third row seats use a 50/50 split.

With all of its seats up, the Journey offers just 10.7 cubic feet of space behind the third row. Fold those flat, and the cargo hold expands to 37.0 cubic feet. Finally, with both rows stowed, there's a useful 67.6 cubic feet of space behind the two front chairs.

2020 Dodge Journey

Even the upgraded 8.4-inch multimedia system lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Journey's base multimedia system uses a 4.3-inch touchscreen headunit, with only basic audio features. An optional upgrade doesn't increase the screen size any but adds notable features like SiriusXM satellite radio and a CD player, in addition to the standard USB and aux port.

Crossroad models come with an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, with Bluetooth connectivity. However, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not part of the equation. Embedded navigation is only available on the Crossroad trim.

As for driver-assistance features, well, there aren't many to discuss. Every Journey comes standard with parking sensors and a back-up camera, but that's about it. Adaptive cruise control? Lane-keeping assist? Blind-spot monitoring? Rear cross-traffic alert? None of those are available on the 2020 Dodge Journey.

2020 Dodge Journey

You can't get the Dodge Journey with all-wheel drive anymore.

Official pricing has yet to be announced as of this publish date, but we don't expect prices to change too much versus the 2019 Journey. That means the SE Value trim should come in around $25,000, with the Crossroad commanding around $32,000.

The SE Value can be had with a Blacktop package, which adds a gloss black grille and unique, 17-inch wheels. The Popular Equipment Group adds a six-way power driver's seat, Bluetooth, three-zone climate control and more.

The Crossroad's Popular Equipment Group nets you remote start, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel and embedded navigation in the 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system. An additional rear entertainment system can be optioned on the Crossroad, which includes an overhead, 9-inch video screen and wireless headphones.

Edmunds' Expert Review

  • Minivan-style interior functionality, perfect crash-test scores, interesting entertainment and communications options, attractive pricing.
  • Lackluster base four-cylinder engine, subpar interior materials, ergonomic miscues, numb and vague steering, soggy handling, poor reputation for reliability.

The 2010 Dodge Journey receives driver and front-passenger active head restraints, a larger 9-inch screen for the rear-seat entertainment system and standard keyless entry.

Edmunds says

The 2010 Dodge Journey offers minivan conveniences without the minivan stigma and pricing, but it's not refined or capable enough to earn our recommendation.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2010 Dodge Journey SE 4dr SUV (2.4L 4cyl 4A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.55 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

Vehicle overview.

The 2010 Dodge Journey crossover SUV is effectively a replacement for Chrysler's now defunct short-wheelbase minivans -- a family-friendly vehicle that's a bit more maneuverable than the regular Grand Caravan. The Journey does indeed fill this void in functional terms, offering lots of room for larger families and a number of pleasant convenience and technology features. The question is whether buyers will find its interior quality and driving dynamics sufficient relative to the ever-improving competition. After all, a journey is hardly worth taking if you're not going to enjoy the trip.

The Journey's strength is clearly its cabin functionality, where the influence of Chrysler's minivans is unmistakable. Its optional third-row seat sets it apart from two-row crossover SUVs, providing enough room for kids. The Journey is also loaded with clever, well-conceived minivan-style conveniences, from the Flip 'n Stow storage compartment under the front passenger seat to the Chill Zone glovebox beverage cooler. Other neat options include MyGIG, Chrysler's hard-drive-based navigation and entertainment system, and a rear-seat entertainment system with a 9-inch screen. If what you're after is a versatile interior at a reasonable price, the Journey certainly delivers.

Speaking of pricing, that's another of the Journey's strengths, as the base SE model costs about the same as a bare-bones five-seat family sedan. How does Dodge do it? Simple: It skimps on interior quality and performance. The Journey's cabin materials are no nicer than those of the dismal Dodge Caliber economy car, on which the Journey is based. As for performance, the base four-cylinder engine is slow and noisy, and the V6-powered SXT and R/T models aren't particularly swift either. Moreover, all Journeys feature ponderous handling and steering that instills little confidence, even by the workaday standards of this segment.

Overall, the 2010 Dodge Journey has a split personality. On the one hand, it has interior versatility and technology to spare; on the other hand, it's built like a cheap runabout and performs like one, too. Among competing crossovers, Toyota's RAV4 offers a third-row seat along with better performance, and the surprisingly enjoyable Kia Rondo is another model to consider. The larger, three-row Ford Flex starts at about the same price as a loaded Journey, and is superior in every way. And if you don't need the Journey's optional third row, virtually any two-row crossover SUV on the market will be more pleasant to drive and own. Finally, our consumer reviews show a record of poor reliability in a number of areas. We do not recommend the Journey.

Performance & mpg

The base-model Journey SE comes with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque. It drives the front wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. Uplevel SXT and R/T trim levels employ a 3.5-liter V6 that produces 235 hp and 232 lb-ft of torque. It's matched to a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control. On these trim levels, buyers have a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. In our testing, an all-wheel-drive R/T model went from zero to 60 mph in an unremarkable 9.2 seconds -- just as slow as competing four-cylinder models.

The EPA gives the four-cylinder Journey ratings of 19 mpg city/25 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined. The front-drive V6 drops to 16/24/19, and adding AWD yields a 15/23/18 rating. None of the above is very good relative to the competition.

Every 2010 Journey includes antilock disc brakes, traction control, rollover-sensing stability control, active front head restraints, front-seat side airbags and side curtain airbags for all three rows. A rearview camera is optional, as are handy built-in second-row child booster seats, a first in this segment. In brake testing, a Journey R/T came to a stop in a longish 132 feet.

In crash tests, the Journey received perfect ratings in all categories. The government awarded it five starts in both front and side impacts, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Journey its highest "Good" rating for both frontal-offset and side impacts.

Despite its plebeian Caliber roots, the 2010 Dodge Journey is a well-fed specimen, with even the base SE model tipping the scales at a hefty 3,800 pounds. The four-cylinder engine is simply overmatched here -- there's not nearly enough power to merge confidently on the highway, and it sounds as strained as it feels. The V6 in the SXT and R/T models is more appropriate, returning decent acceleration and passing power, but it's still well behind the standard-setting V6 in the RAV4.

On the open road, the Journey stays quiet, but its steering is terribly numb and vague. Handling is also poor, even in the ostensibly sporty R/T model. Overall, few crossovers are as unpleasant to drive as this Dodge.

Inside, the 2010 Dodge Journey is a spacious, versatile family hauler. Families with one or two children should find more than enough room in the first two rows, and the optional 50/50-split third-row seat can serve as a sort of emergency backup for kids. The second-row seats slide fore and aft, and access to the third-row seats is a breeze. All-around comfort is reduced somewhat due to the hard and flat seats, however, and the low placement of the audio controls makes them awkward to reach for the driver -- especially with the optional touchscreen-controlled stereo. Materials quality and fit and finish are notably subpar.

In terms of utility, there's obvious influence from Chrysler's minivans, as the Journey's interior is awash in cupholders, lidded storage bins and cubbyholes, including tubs beneath the second-row floor and an ingenious compartment beneath the front passenger seat. Maximum cargo capacity is 68 cubic feet, a bit less than what's available in some competing models.

2010 Dodge Journey models

A midsize crossover SUV, the 2010 Dodge Journey comes in SE, SXT and R/T trim levels. All models come standard with two-row seating for five; with the optional 50/50-split-folding third-row bench (SXT and R/T only), capacity increases to seven.

The base SE comes with 16-inch steel wheels, keyless entry, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, air-conditioning, full power accessories and a six-speaker stereo with a six-disc CD/MP3 changer. The midgrade SXT adds 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlamps, heated side mirrors, a trip computer, enhanced interior storage, stain-resistant cloth upholstery, a six-way power driver seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 115-volt power outlet and satellite radio. The top-drawer R/T features 19-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, remote start, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, heated front seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls.

Dodge bundles most of the Journey's optional features into packages, and many of the upper trim levels' features are available as options for the lower trims. Other major options, depending on the trim level, include a Chrome Appearance package, sport-tuned suspension and steering, Bluetooth, an iPod adapter, tri-zone climate control, a rear-seat entertainment system and a hard-drive-based navigation and audio system with a back-up camera.

2015 Dodge Journey review: Our expert's take

By Jennifer Geiger

The 2015 Dodge Journey is a low-cost, relatively family-friendly alternative to other people-movers, but you get what you pay for.

I want to like the 2015 Dodge Journey — with its affordable price, available third row and refreshingly simple multimedia system — but major ride and powertrain refinement issues sap a lot of its likability.

Again for 2015, the Journey is available in five- or seven-seat configurations with front- or all-wheel drive. Compare the 2014 and 2015 models here . The Journey straddles the compact and midsize SUV classes; competitors include compacts like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, as well as the Kia Sorento, a midsize SUV with an optional third row. Compare them here .

Exterior & Styling The Journey should look pretty familiar; it hasn’t changed much since it was introduced for the 2009 model year and then lightly revised for 2011. I tested a Crossroad trim that slots above the midlevel SXT model. Changes on the outside for the Crossroad include black chrome trim on its grille, headlights, roof rails and front bumper, which complement the smoked headlights and taillights and the 19-inch Hyper Black wheels. The package gives the conservative, suburban-looking Journey a kick of edgy, urban attitude.

How It Drives Power from a stop is respectable, but the Journey feels slow on the highway, even with the optional 283-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6. The unresponsive, clunky six-speed automatic holds it back. Shifts are often delayed, and you can really hear and feel the powertrain straining to keep up with power demand for passing and merging. It sounds and feels very crude at highway speeds; competitors have much more refined road manners.

A 2.4-liter four-cylinder with an ancient four-speed automatic is standard. We haven’t driven the four-cylinder, but it’s hard to imagine that its 173 hp could satisfy when the V-6 is already borderline. Four-cylinder models have front-wheel drive only; V-6 versions can have front- or all-wheel drive.

Both engines have disappointing fuel economy. The four-cylinder is EPA-rated 19/26/21 mpg city/highway/combined, which is embarrassing against base versions of the CR-V (27/34/29), RAV4 (23/30/26) and Sorento (21/29/24).

In front-wheel-drive V-6 trim, the Journey is rated 17/25/19 mpg, a smidge under the V-6 Sorento (18/26/21). The CR-V and RAV4 don’t offer V-6 engines.

The Journey’s ride could also use some polishing. It lacks composure over even the smallest bumps, and larger ones ripple through the cabin like rocks tossed into a puddle. The brakes are also disappointing; the pedal has a mushy feel, and the brakes pulse unsettlingly even during normal braking.

Interior There’s a lot of black plastic in the cabin, but much of it is nicely padded. The overall look is sharp, thanks to some matte chrome trim with light gray contrast stitching, plus black leather seats with a sporty mesh insert.

The seats are long-drive comfortable but annoying to adjust. There’s a button to power the driver’s seat forward and back, but a manual lever to recline it. Front seat headroom and legroom are adequate, but one taller editor didn’t have enough knee room against the large, bulging steering-column housing.

I had a full house during my test and was able to fit two rear-facing infant seats in the second row with room for a small adult beside them. The bench seat has two sets of lower Latch anchors in the outboard positions, as well as an extra single anchor in the middle position, an uncommon feature that makes the row more flexible for child-safety-seat placement.

Another family-friendly feature is a pair of integrated boosters, positioned in the outboard seats. They pop up easily and are quickly ready for use. The $225 option sounds steep compared with a $30 backless booster from Babies R Us, but you’re paying for convenience — integrated boosters make carpooling with extra kids safer and easier. They’re not for every kid, though; they can be safely used only with children weighing between 48 and 85 pounds. That’s a higher minimum weight than many traditional boosters, and because my 5-year-old weighs around 40 pounds, she was unable to test the Journey’s booster.

Lastly, kids will enjoy the optional DVD entertainment system’s 9-inch overhead screen, remote control and wireless headphones, though it’s not Blu-ray compatible.

A third-row bench is standard on the Crossroad model, and getting back there is a breeze. A lever on the second-row seat collapses the seat bottom and slides the whole seat forward, quickly creating an adult-sized opening.

Room in the third row is just OK. My 5-year-old’s booster fit well next to a small adult, and both were comfortable for a short ride. Unlike the Kia Sorento, though, the third row is available even on base models. It’s an extra $1,700 there as part of the Flexible Seating Group, which also includes extras like three-zone climate control and the easy-entry second-row feature.

Here’s where the Journey completely lost me: There are no lower Latch anchors in the third row. That’s not uncommon, as they’re not federally mandated back there, but Dodge also left out top tether anchors, making it unsafe for forward-facing car seats. Tsk, tsk, Dodge. Many competitors’ third rows have at least one top tether anchor, and some even have a set of lower Latch anchors.

Sunshades aren’t available for the second-row windows, either. This feature may seem minor, but it’s a helpful convenience on long trips with napping kids, and I missed it during my test weekend. Second-row captain’s chairs are also unavailable; many family vehicles offer them.

Ergonomics & Electronics Chrysler’s familiar 8.4-inch Uconnect touch-screen is front and center. It’s standard on higher trims; a small 4.3-inch touch-screen system is standard on lower trims. The 8.4-inch unit’s large, clear screen, straightforward menu structure and handy position high on the dash make it a favorite.

Operating the system for audio functions couldn’t get any easier — especially because the volume and tuning controls are separate dials located below the touch-screen — but using the navigation system was aggravating. There was quite a delay registering many functions; it was slow to respond to an address or make changes to the map.

Cargo & Storage Like so much about the Journey, small-item storage is hit and miss. First the good: The front passenger-seat cushion flips up to reveal a hidden storage compartment. There’s also a pair of second-row, in-floor storage bins. These hidden gems are useful for stashing valuables, and I appreciate their clever design.

In front, a big uncovered bin sitting in front of the shifter is sized right for devices. On the flip side, Dodge cheaped out with the seatback pockets; there’s only one, behind the driver’s seat. The center console is also small. It’s deep, but not very wide, so forget stashing even a small purse there.

There’s another handy underfloor storage bin behind the third row, but cargo space in general is paltry back there. With just 10.7 cubic feet of space, there’s not room for much. A small umbrella stroller fits, but a larger stroller does not. Behind the third row, the Kia Sorento offers 11.3 cubic feet of space.

Folding the third row flat for more cargo space is easy via a pair of seatback-mounted straps. Doing so opens up 39.6 cubic feet of room, besting the CR-V (35.3), RAV4 (38.4) and Sorento (38.8). In terms of maximum cargo volume, the Sorento leads the pack with 73.5 cubic feet, compared with 67.6 in the Journey, 70.9 in the CR-V and 73.4 in the RAV4.

Safety The Dodge Journey received an overall crash-test score of four out of five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rated the Journey good (out of a possible poor, marginal, acceptable and good) in all areas of testing except the small overlap front test, where it received a score of poor.

Thick C-pillars and large third-row head restraints compromise rear visibility. A backup camera is optional on higher trims but unavailable on the base model. The Journey also lacks many safety features that are becoming common options, like blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning and forward collision warning systems. Seven airbags are standard: front, front-seat side-impact, driver’s knee and full-length side curtains. Click here for a full list of safety features.

A lack of third-row top-tether anchors meant we couldn’t install a forward-facing convertible child-safety seat in the third row, but two child seats fit well in the second row. Read our Car Seat Check for more.

Value in Its Class Sometimes, cost is a top priority, and the Journey definitely wins in that category. Base prices start at $21,690, including destination, which is around $2,000 to $4,000 lower than its competitors. But you might end up making up the difference at the repair shop; Journey reliability is historically bad.

Families tempted by the Journey’s low prices have a lot to consider, including whether sacrificing crashworthiness, reliability and refinement in the name of a deal is a good plan.

I recommend this car.

Now, I did just purchase this car, just a couple of months ago, and even though it's an older car, it only had 55,000 miles when I bought it, and I purchased a 5-star warranty as well. First, I'm probably being a bit bias, b/c I'm a Dodge fan, due the Nitro I had previously. But so far, the other reviews I've read are pretty much spot-on. Mine has the 2.4L 4-cylinder. It's not as good on the gas mileage as other 4 cylinders, from the Reviews I had already read, b/c the Journey is heavy, but for me, it's also less to fill up than the 3.6L, 6 cylinder Nitro I owned previously. I also wouldn't take it on any sharp turns either. As other reviews had said, the engine does make some noise, but it's not that big of a deal to me. However, unlike the other reviews I had read, I have plenty of space as a driver, it's not as compacted as I thought it would be, but the cargo space has plenty of room, just like I've read. The infotainment system is really good too, just like the reviews I'd read had stated. I have SIRIUS, don't know how, I'm not paying for it, but if it's a feature with this car, fantastic, BB King's Bluesville station is on constant play, as other stations are too. It doesn't have the vehicle backing system nor an AUX connector that most cars now have, but it's a 2015, and the Journey wasn't Dodge's most elite model either. However, so far, I'm growing into this car, and glad I purchased it. I'll probably get the Hornet next. Ha.

I hate this car now I loved a year ago

I've had my car almost year, it's been broke down most of that year. Problems we can't seem to figure out. The check engine light is on and off . A light for traction comes on the car with squiggly lines . It makes the car jump. This seems to happen when the car is hot. We've put a lot of money into it already only to be able to drive it four days here, two days there . I'm so upset I’m paying for a car that I don’t get to drive. Something simple is blocking my car from moving.

Meet The Reborn 2022 Dodge Journey

More images of the Chinese-based Journey have been revealed.

After being discontinued for the 2020 model year in the US, the Dodge Journey is back. Well, sort of. Last week, the new 2022 Dodge Journey entered production , but it isn't being built for the US market.

Although there were rumors that a next-generation model is in development based on the same platform as the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, the 2022 Dodge Journey is a rebadged version of the Trumpchi GS5 SUV sold in China. In partnership with Stellantis, GAC Motor will export the Journey to the Mexican market. Now, Stellantis has revealed the specifications of Mexico's reborn Dodge Journey.

Compared to the Trumpchi GS5, the 2022 Dodge Journey has a larger grille with a gloss black finish, giving it a more premium appearance. It also features LED headlights and 18-inch or 19-inch alloy wheels depending on the trim.

Under the hood, the 2022 Dodge Journey is powered by a 1.5-liter turbo rated at 169 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. McPherson independent front suspension and multi-link independent rear suspension ensures a smooth ride even on rough roads.

In Mexico, the 2022 Dodge Journey will be available in three trims: SXT, Sport, and GT. As standard, SXT and Sport trims include an analog instrument cluster and a seven-inch LCD digital information screen, while the GT trim gets a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. An eight-inch central touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay is offered as standard for all trims.

A 360-degree camera is included with Sport and GT trims. In Mexico, the 2022 Dodge Journey will start at 555,900 pesos ($27,075 USD) for the SXT trim, 615,900 pesos ($29,997 USD) for the Sport, and 645,900 pesos ($31,458 USD) for the GT. Sales of the 2022 Dodge Journey will start at the end of October.

10 Used Dodge Models That Can Stand The Test Of Time

Dodge has a polarizing relationship regarding reliability for their creations, forcing many to look away from the vast back catalog of used Dodge cars. However, being a part of the Chrysler umbrella has perks, such as the company's decade partnership with Daimler-Benz and continuing bonds with the cross-continent Stellantis group. As a result, a used Dodge car can easily be the product of "badge engineering," if not an iconic model of their own . Knowing today's best-selling Dodge Challenger shares an evolved platform with a 2002 Mercedes-Benz E-Class begins to put the industry into perspective.

The best-selling muscle car of 2022, the Dodge Challenger, is also the cheapest Dodge car you can buy today, with prices starting at $30,545. Be that as it may, let's use statistics from J.D. Power and Cars.com to determine the most reliable used Dodge cars today.

2020 Dodge Charger – 89/100

As far as used Dodge cars go, the 2020 Dodge Charger ticks every box. Despite its initial outlay , a four-door sedan loaded with a slew of beefy Hemi V8 engines, what’s not to love? Furthermore, Dodge’s 2020 efforts on their family-friendly muscle car scored 89/100 for reliability as the seventh-gen Dodge Charger entered its ninth year of production. Dodge sold 77,426 Charger models in 2020 despite the Covid-19 Pandemic.

With a recent $99 million investment for smaller power plants from the company's Stellantis overlords, the earth-shattering 717 hp 6.2-liter Hemi aboard the 2020 Dodge Charger SRT looks set to retire beyond 2023. So, despite the Charger's ropey maintenance costs, this 2020 used Dodge model is your best bet for a reliable muscle car experience.

2016 Dodge Challenger – 86/100

One of the best-selling cars in its class for 2022 , more specifically, the best-selling muscle car of 2022, is the Dodge Challenger. Sadly, the 2022 car costs an average of $130,000, whereas a 2016 car featuring the same ludicrous SRT Hellcat package costs an average of $56,673! To further emphasize your parent's favorite phrase, “value for money!” The 2016 variant of the Dodge Challenger scores a trusty 86/100 for quality and reliability, cementing the used Dodge model among the great, indestructible used muscle cars on the market today.

In fact, despite relatively high maintenance costs for the Dodge brand as a whole, the 2023 Dodge Challenger and Charger are the company’s most cost-effective models regarding maintenance and repairs over 10 years, according to CarEdge.

2007 Dodge Dakota – 86/100

The Dodge Dakota was the first midsize production truck to draw power from a V8 power plant, the rather dull albeit highly dependable 4.7-liter Magnum V8. Dodge unleashed the Dakota compact pickup a touch larger than the Ford Ranger and Chevrolet S-10 competition, featuring a rigid body-on-frame chassis construction just like its larger Dodge Ram cousins. However, don’t be fooled by its small size: this used Dodge has a respectable 6,850 lb towing capacity to partner with that grunting V8 block.

2007 saw the Dodge Dakota score 86/100 for quality and reliability, marking a sweet spot for the used Dodge today. Although Dodge pulled the plug on the wee truck in 2011, Ford's exploits with the Maverick look to have forced the hand of Stellantis for a 2024 return !

2017 Dodge Durango – 83/100

A used Dodge Durango strikes most automotive fraternities as an expensive threat. However, the 2017 model year poses a silver lining across the SUV's lengthy lifespan, scoring a respectable 83/100 for quality and reliability. Furthermore, Consumer Reports score the 2017 model year an incredible 4.7/5 for reliability as Dodge continues to manufacture their Mercedes-Benz-inspired SUV.

Customers today are met with reliable used cars packing a 5.7-liter Hemi. Even better, the Dodge branded brute costs an average of $19,700!

2008 Dodge Ram 1500 – 83/100

The now-independent Ram manufactures the most expensive trucks regarding maintenance and repairs. However, it was not always this way under the keen eye of Dodge. The 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 is the perfect example, scoring a modest 83/100 for quality and reliability and backed up by a 4.4/5 rating according to existing customers.

2008 saw the tail end of the third-generation truck, and Dodge was not shy with engine options. Power plants such as the 5.7-liter Hemi and the iconic 6.7-liter turbocharged diesel from Cummins made their way to the plucky used Dodge as the little hauler featured a respectable 8,750 lb towing capacity.

2007 Dodge Ram 2500 – 81/100

Dodge Ram trucks will soon cost a fortune on the used car market due to the unique nature of the marque separation. If you're looking to jump the gun and a used Dodge 1500 lacks the pulling power, a 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 has you covered with a far superior 13,050 lb towing capacity emanating from that glorious 5.7-liter Hemi V8.

A used 2007 Dodge Ram 2500 costs an average of $14,137 today and scores a respectable 81/100 quality and reliability rating with J.D. Power.

2012 Dodge Caliber – 80/100

A used Dodge Caliber hatchback from 2012 can take on the most reliable cars from popular automotive brands . Despite its dull nature, the Caliber silenced the polarizing PT Cruiser in 2007, and by 2012, Consumer Reports rated the used Dodge 4.4/5 for reliability, thanks to its simplistic nature. Chrysler utilized many four-pot engines for the Caliber from their World Gasoline Engine partnerships.

Furthermore, a used Dodge Caliber arrives on the Chrysler PM/MK platform inherited from the Mitsubishi GS Platform, you know, the one that the iconic Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution rides on. And you thought it was boring!

2014 Dodge Journey – 79/100

Some cars crash through the gate with an outstanding reputation for dependability. However, others fall flat on their face due to a poor first impression. The Dodge Journey is a great example. Scarred by its initial unreliable nature on release in 2008/09, Dodge went on a “Journey” with the model as by 2014, the Dodge Journey sports a 4.2/5 reliability rank from its very own consumers, leading to a reliable used Dodge remaining in today's market.

Dodge equipped their 2009-2020 crossover SUV with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine shared across the Hyundai and Mitsubishi range, even sharing one of Volkswagen's incredibly durable 2.0-liter TDI diesel engines with the roomy crossover to ensure a trouble-free experience.

2009 Dodge Avenger – 79/100

Some classic American cars refuse to quit . The Dodge Avenger is by no means a classic, but it’s undoubtedly American, as Dodge chose to market the vehicle as The “Superhero Vehicle For The Every Man.” Dodge unleashed their Avenger in 2007 alongside the budding Journey model. Like the Journey, Dodge fitted several inline-four engines, but also included a trio of V6 options too.

Despite Chrysler's rocky relationship with the V6 engine configuration, the 2009 Avenger represents a reliable used Dodge on today's market, featuring a 79/100 quality and reliability rating for the company’s in house superhero.

1994 Dodge Ram – 4.7/5

Dodge is primarily known for their best-selling classic muscle cars. However, between 1981 and 2010, the Chrysler-owned company pioneered the pickup truck market. The second-generation Dodge Ram Pickup truck began life in 1994, and the used Dodge truck represents far more than its glistening 4.7/5 consumer reliability rating.

The "Louisville Slugger" is the first truck to arrive with a V10 engine, the tubby 8.0-liter Magnum developing 300 hp. Despite the grunty V10, Dodge evolved the reputation of the pickup truck from a typical workhorse into a livable daily cruiser by equipping the second-gen Dodge Ram with convenient storage and a luxurious interior. Today's $100,000+ trucks have the second-generation Ram to thank for their abundant nature.
