Very good service. Given that the day did not accompany and the sea was moved, the crew of the ship took care at all times of people who got dizzy. The boat with the glass bottom was impressive, nols were showing every detail of the coral bottom and the fish that were in the area

About Green Island Cairns

Green Island Cairns

Green Island is a beautiful 6000 year old coral cay located in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, just 27km offshore from Cairns, and one of the most popular destinations on the Great Barrier Reef for visitors coming to Far North Queensland.

A ferry trip to Green Island only takes 45 minutes, it makes for a great day out or convenient half day experience.

Green Island History

Green Island History

Green Island is a 12 hectare coral cay that is over 6000 years old. A coral cay is a sandy island formed on the surface of the coral reef over thousands of years.

The Island was the result of the ocean currents build-up of sand and coral rubble deposited on the calm side of the platform reef, and is now the only coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef that is covered in rainforest!

Green Island became a national park in 1937, a marine park in 1974 and protected as part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area in 1981. The Great Barrier Reef has over 400 types of corals and 1,500 species of fish. It is common for visitors to Green Island to swim only metres away from Green and Hawksbill turtles just off the beach, which are endangered species. The island also has a wide diversity of bird and insect life which live inside the tropical vine forest that covers the island.

The Aboriginal people, the Gungandi people know the island as Wunyami. They still maintain a close connection to the island and reef which were used as an initiation ground for young men in the past.

We went on a tour to Green Island last week, our kids absolutely loved the glass bottom boat! I accidentally left my reading glasses at the main swimming beach, the staff on the boat and back at Cairns were extremely helpful and I'm please to say I have just received my glasses in tact via express post. Thanks so much Great Adventures!

Tracey Bowe

I took my son out to Green Island for a day of snorkelling. We were blessed with great weather and great staff. Nic (our driver) on the glass bottom boat was fabulous and it was so nice to see him get excited about seeing the fish, clams and turtles as if he was seeing them for the first time too. A fabulous day. We will be back.

Green Island’s wide paved or timber pathways are easy for wheelchairs to access, as is the jetty – perfect for some turtle spotting. There is a boardwalk through the rainforest into the centre of the Island to explore the flora and birdlife. The sandy beach for access to the water is not accessible by wheelchair. The glass bottom boat is only accessible via a number of steps.

The day visitor area has disabled toilet facilities and easy access to the food outlets.

At our Cairns jetty and Green Island, Great Adventures catamarans have boarding ramp gangways able to accommodate standard sized wheelchairs, however larger motorised wheelchairs may not be suitable. Depending on tidal conditions, at times there may be a few steps at the end of the gangway onto the jetty. We recommend contacting our reservations staff 24 hours prior to travel to ensure the most appropriate departure times regarding tide.

Green Island Resort has an Island Suite configured for wheelchair access to the room and bathroom facilities, with the room located in easy access to central facilities and boardwalks.

For more information about wheelchair accessibility across our operations, or contact our friendly reservations teams for advice.

2 Rare dugong sighting at Green Island

A group of very excited scuba divers with Great Adventures Cruises at Green Island were treated to a rare encounter with a young adult dugong.. Estimated to be around 2 metres in length, this was the first dugong sighting recorded by Great Adven

A group of very excited scuba divers with Great Adventures Cruises at Green Island were treated to a rare encounter with a young adult dugong.. Estimated to be around 2 metres in length, this was the first dugong sighting recorded by Great Adventures divers at Green Island in several years. It was also the first ever sighting for videographer Dan (DD) Liu and two very lucky introductory divers on holiday from Ballarat Victoria.

“It was so exciting to see! He was very curious swimming near us as the group were diving on a nearby coral bommie. He came close within about 4 metres, swimming away and then coming back for another look before swimming off over the seagrass beds,” said DD

Dugongs, often called sea cows, as they graze shallow seagrass meadows (eating up to 40kg a day!) are found across the tropical belt in Australia. They reach a length of 3 metres, live up to 70 years of age and can weigh as much as 400kg.

“Dugongs are fascinating mammals, sharing a common ancestor with elephants, and early sailors are believed to have confused them for mythical mermaids,” said Quicksilver Group Environment Compliance Manager, Doug Baird.

“They are most closely related to the manatee, their northern hemisphere relative. They resemble a large dolphin but lack a dorsal fin and have an upper lip covered in thick bristles.  They are well designed for aquatic life, with nostrils situated on top of their heads so they can breathe, and have a large, strong tail that propels them through the water. Their eyes and ears are on the side of their heads. Although their eyesight is poor, they have an acute sense of hearing.”

Dugong are threatened on a worldwide scale and in Australia, are a protected species under various legislation including the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975.

This important sighting will be reported to GBRMPA’s Eye on the Reef monitoring program contributing valuable information about these endangered creatures as well as the long-term protection and management of the reef.

3 Official launch for new Wunyami Cultural Walking Tour

The Gunggandji and Yidinji Traditional Owners have commenced Wunyami Cultural Walking Tours, providing an authentic indigenous experience for visitors to Green Island.

The Wunyami Cultural Walking Tour is 100% indigenous owned and operated. It’s a wonderful addition to the island experience bringing traditional stories to life and a whole new perspective to the cultural history. Wunyami, which means “Place of Spirits” is Green Island’s original name.

Participants learn about traditional food and medicinal uses of the rainforest plants, participate in traditional fire lighting techniques and can learn about cultural importance of clay painting.

Elders Gudju Gudju Fourmile and Garth Murgha (Muka) say,” Our guides explain how the island is connected to an ancient journey of two ancestorial story-time beings who fought and formed the island and who still protect it today. This story is shared by the GuruGulu Gunggandji people (Yarrabah) and the Gimuy Yidinji people (Cairns). Our guides tell of the relationship of these warriors and the connectivity of this iconic island to the ancient seascape.”

Guides have been given special permission from their elders to share the stories of the island and the Great Barrier Reef with all who come on this tour.

The new business venture also includes the Black Seahorse gift shop which has opened in Green Island Resort’s day visitor area, selling a range of authentic indigenous artworks and merchandise. The shop draws its name from the Black Seahorse, a known lucky charm for the saltwater women of the Great Barrier Reef in memory of Alma Fourmile (nee Patterson Katchewan).

The Wunyami Cultural Walking Tour are available daily and takes approximately 1 hour. Tours can be booked at the Black Seahorse gift shop on the island.

Can't decide? We have personally been on every Cairns reef and diving trip. We can help you choose the best tour , to suit your experience and budget.

Tour Type:   Full Day | Operates:   Daily | Departs:   8.30am | Returns:   5.30pm | Transfers: Yes, extra

Highlights:.

This is the only Cairns day tour to include time at both a tropical island and the Great Barrier Reef. Suitable for people of all ages and experience levels, you can spend two hours exploring Green Island, before continuing on to the Outer Great Barrier Reef where you have another three hours to swim, snorkel, dive (for more information on these activities, please see below tabs) and more.

Your ride for the day is aboard a fast 28.77m long catamaran, which has two levels of air-conditioned interior and two exterior sun decks, one shaded and one not. The Great Adventures boat is licensed to carry up to 325 people on its trip to the Outer Great Barrier Reef and complimentary tea and coffee is served on boarding. The boat takes you first to Green Island and then onwards to the Great Barrier Reef, before operating the journey in reverse later that day.

At Green Island there is plenty of time to walk the rainforest boardwalks or snorkel from the sandy beaches. Meantime, the Great Adventures outer reef pontoon offers a range of included and optional activities. Inclusions are: snorkelling, semi-submersible tour and the underwater observatory, as well as a hot and cold buffet lunch. Optional extras are: introductory and certified scuba diving, guided snorkel tours, helmet diving and scenic helicopter flights. The pontoon has shaded seating and a sundeck, as well as showers and change rooms for your comfort. Water entry is via a submerged platform and easy access steps into the water. This is an expensive day, but has a lot of inclusions.

All prices in Australian Dollars. Can't see the prices on your mobile? Click the Green Circle with the + Sign.

Check-in commences at 7.30am in the Cairns Reef Fleet Terminal, with boarding on the Great Adventures catamaran from 8am. Tea and coffee is served on boarding but must be consumed prior to departure at 8.30am. It’s a quick, comfortable 45-minute transfer to Green Island where you depart the boat to spend two hours exploring. You have to take your bags with you, so make sure you pack light for this day tour (lockers are available for hire on the island, if required). There’s lots to see on the island, from the self-guided walking trail (takes about an hour to complete the whole trip) to the sandy beaches and resort facilities. Snorkelling equipment is included and you have time to do this, should you want too. You are back on the jetty around 11.15am for the 11.20am boarding on to the catamaran. From here, it’s a one hour transfer to the Outer Reef pontoon and a safety presentation is played during the journey. Activity briefings (such as diving, if booked) are also completed during this time.

Arriving at the pontoon around 12.30pm you can commence your Great Barrier Reef activities. Snorkelling equipment and buoyancy vests are available on the pontoon. The hot and cold buffet lunch is served on the pontoon between 1-2.30pm and includes curry dishes, cold meats and salads and fresh prawns. You have until around 3.10pm to enjoy all water activities, before being called back to the boat for a 3.30pm departure. The catamaran stops to collect guests from Green Island on the homeward journey (you do not get off the boat this time) before arriving back into Cairns around 5.30pm

You can choose between one (1) and two (2) scuba dives on the Great Adventures Green Island and Outer Reef tour. All dives are completed at the Outer Great Barrier Reef pontoon and are guided. Scuba diving is available for certified and introductory (no experience necessary) divers: all equipment and briefings are included in the dive price.

INTRODUCTORY DIVES: This is a great opportunity to try scuba diving for the first time. No experience is necessary and all training and equipment is included in the introductory dive price. Introductory dives are guided, by professional dive crew, and there is comfortable water entry by lowered steps into the water.

CERTIFIED DIVING: Certified divers can choose between one (1) or two (2) certified dives, both of which will be completed at the Great Adventures Outer Reef pontoon. Based on a standard itinerary, your first dive will be started as soon as you arrive to the pontoon (at 12.40pm) with a second dive at 2.30pm. Briefings are provided on the boat and equipment is allocated on the pontoon. All certified dives are guided and will reach a maximum depth of 14m, lasting around 40-minutes each. Water entry is via steps under the pontoon. This gives you time to complete other activities on the pontoon, during your day tour. Equipment is included in the dive price: you will be required to show your dive license and complete dive medical paperwork on board.

Snorkeling:

Snorkelling at the Great Adventures outer reef pontoon is suitable for people of all ages and abilities. Water entry is via a lowered platform, allowing you to put on and take off your mask and fins in the water. The coral gardens are a short swim from the pontoon and flotation devices are available. Lycra suits are available for hire on the pontoon: we recommend them for sun protection purposes.

Great Adventures: Green Island + Reef Review

By julie | december 16, 2011.

Great Adventures is the only tour operator to combine Green Island with the Outer Great Barrier Reef. The boat carries hundreds of guests, so you can expect the pontoon and boat to be quite busy. There is ample time to explore Green Island and then enjoy the Outer Great Barrier Reef, with the pontoon activities...

Please note the art of freediving is not permitted on any of the day boats or liveaboard dive boats from Cairns & Port Douglas. With the high instances of (shallow water blackout) companies do not allow this for safety reasons.

Do you have Medical Issues:

Please note if you have any medical issues you will need to go see your local GP where you live and get them to write you a letter on the practice letterhead signed and dated by your doctor that you are “ Fit to dive ” If you have one of these letters then all dive companies in Cairns will take you diving. Please note these letters are only valid for three months from their date of issue.
