Even Off Camera, Zendaya Dresses the Part
The actress is known for thematic dressing to promote her movies. After her “Dune” desert epic, comes a tennis love triangle, “Challengers.”
By Jessica Testa
In “Challengers,” Zendaya plays a tennis star named Tashi Duncan. Her clothes are central to her identity; the character is sponsored by Adidas and costumed in sporty-and-rich outfits by the designer Jonathan Anderson .
“She’ll have a fashion line,” one of Tashi’s suitors predicts to another in the trailer . “She is going to turn her whole family into millionaires.”
Fashion is equally important to the real-life Zendaya — a tool of both image-making and moneymaking. She has become a defining star of the modern movie press tour. Coverage of these appearances can be feverish, with thousands of articles and social-media posts produced for each stop: a premiere in New York, a photo call in Mexico City, a news conference in Seoul.
The fever rises when actors lean into thematic dressing. The cast of “Barbie” drowned themselves in pink, ripping looks straight from vintage toy boxes. The stars of “Madame Web” wrapped themselves in blingy netted gowns. Kristen Stewart wore very little to promote her erotic thriller “Love Lies Bleeding.”
Still, few can generate quite as much attention as Zendaya, who, for example, wore a vintage robot suit by Mugler to the London premiere of “Dune: Part Two” in February. (Her apparent theme for this press tour: futuristic desert warrior queen.) From this single moment, the data analytics company Launchmetrics valued the media impact for Mugler to be worth $13.3 million, according to Women’s Wear Daily .

Yet despite her commitment to cosplay, Zendaya has not been wearing Adidas in the lead-up to “Challengers,” the Luca Guadagnino film that will have its premiere in late March. She is wearing preppy looks made by her real sponsor, Louis Vuitton, a luxury brand increasingly enmeshed in the sports world .
For a promotional image released on March 12, Zendaya wore a buttery sweater with a deep V neckline, relaxed white shorts and white pumps — like the most formidable stepmom at the country club, down to her long blown-out bob. Her stylist, the image architect Law Roach, credited Louis Vuitton and Bulgari for the outfit.
Then, on March 17, Zendaya attended the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif., to watch the women’s final. Louis Vuitton dressed her again in tennis whites: a pullover, a tank top and a pleated skort. She accessorized with white sneakers, a small monogram purse — its attached neon yellow coin purse looked like a tennis ball — and her boyfriend, the actor Tom Holland. They sang along to Whitney Houston in their seats.
Zendaya, who trained for “Challengers” with the famed coach Brad Gilbert , later posed for photos with Iga Swiatek, winner of the match and the sport’s top-ranked women’s player.
She looked more at ease in her Sunday “ tenniscore ,” breaking from the severity of her “Dune” chapter. It wasn’t just her cyborg looks that made her seem otherworldly. (That Mugler fembot costume was followed by a vintage circuit-board Givenchy skirt set.) Crisp white gowns from Alaïa (in Paris) and Stéphane Rolland (in New York) also gave her the gravitas of a sci-fi empress at a state dinner.
Now she’s coming back down to earth. Or at least the tennis court. As Ms. Swiatek observed after her victory: “Meeting Zendaya was crazy, but on the other hand, she’s a human like all of us.”

The four grand slams, the two tours and saudi arabia are all hoping to revamp tennis.

On this, the leaders of tennis can agree: There is more money out there to be made. And they see eye-to-eye on this, too: The sport’s current structure could stand to change.
The how’s and why’s and when’s of it all? Well, that’s open to discussion — and there is plenty of that happening now behind closed doors, conversations and negotiations about the future of tennis among the folks who run the Grand Slam tournaments and other events, the women’s WTA and men’s ATP professional tours, the players, their agents and others with a hand in the sport, including Saudi Arabia’s Private Investment Fund (known as the PIF, it is the entity behind LIV Golf ).
There are two main proposals, both aimed at increasing revenue, seeking support at the moment: One, driven by the four Slams, would get rid of the current WTA-ATP structure and create a new Premier Tour (that’s the working title) for roughly 100 women and 100 men and a lower-level Contenders Tour (another working title) with 75 to 100 tournaments open to roughly 200 women and 200 men, with all events hosting both genders with equal prize money; the other, driven by the ATP, would form a venture with the WTA to sell media rights and sponsorships but keep two separate tours for playing purposes, while bringing in an infusion of cash from the PIF in part by placing a Masters 1000 event in Saudi Arabia.
Why is this happening now? The sport is “underperforming,” to use a word offered by Lew Sherr, the CEO of the U.S. Tennis Association, which runs the U.S. Open.
And that, he explained to The Associated Press in a joint interview with Sally Bolton — CEO of the All England Club, which runs Wimbledon — is why the four most prestigious and most-watched tennis tournaments, a quartet that includes the Australian Open and French Open, are working together in what Sherr called an “unprecedented way” in an effort “to unlock what we think is an enormous potential.”
Making tennis more fan-friendly — an easier-to-understand and shorter season, for example, and more consistency in TV broadcasts from week to week — could bring roughly a $1 billion increase in annual value, on top of the sport’s current revenues of about $2.5 billion, Bolton estimated, by way of rights packages and increased sponsorship deals that could arise from more viewership.
Bolton acknowledged nothing will happen “anytime before 2026,” but said she thinks the project “can move relatively quickly” if they get others to buy in.
“The good news is we’re sitting on the cusp of what could be generational change for the better for a global sport,” Ahmad Nassar, the executive director of the Professional Tennis Players Association, a group co-founded by 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic to represent the sport’s athletes, said when asked for a general assessment of the state of play for tennis. “And that’s exciting and a huge opportunity — as long as we don’t squander it.”
The ATP and WTA say they are looking into forming a combined “commercial entity,” but otherwise are mostly staying mum publicly about what potentially is a significant moment for both. The ATP recently struck a deal with the PIF that includes naming rights for the men’s rankings; that followed the placement of a year-end tournament for young players in Saudi Arabia. There already is a provision to allow the ATP to add a 10th Masters tournament, and Saudi Arabia could get that spot on the calendar.
The WTA is expected to close a deal to put its annual season-ending championship in Saudi Arabia, and has also described itself, through a spokesperson, as exploring “whether we can bring greater alignment across the sport ... (and) reviewing the proposals that are being put forth by Saudi Arabia and the Grand Slams. There is a wave of interest in women’s sport from fans and partners around the world, and we want to ensure that women’s tennis is even bigger and better in the future.”
A spokesperson for the PIF declined to comment.
According to Bolton and Sherr, interviews with more than 5,000 fans around the world beginning in 2021 show 70% said the only tennis tournaments they watch are the Slams.
“The conclusion was that the season lacks consequence, that tennis is confusing to follow, and that fans don’t understand which tournaments matter, and which don’t, at any given point in the season. They know the four Slams. But other than that, there’s not a compelling narrative,” Sherr said. “We dilute and compete with ourselves by having two, three, four, five, six tournaments going on at any one point in time. And we’re competing with our own product.”
They made clear, though, they don’t want to run the sport themselves. “Certainly not,” Bolton said.
Instead, they want a revamped, centralized leadership organization, with a board and a chairperson running things — perhaps a single commissioner, the way the top North American sports have — rather than today’s setup of seven governing bodies: the federations that run the four Grand Slams, the two tours, plus the International Tennis Federation. The main tier would have the four Slam events, 10 other main tournaments and a year-end finals. There would be a “tour card” similar to what the PGA Tour has for golf, but also some sort of relegation-and-promotion system akin to European soccer leagues that would allow for movement between the Premier and Contender levels, perhaps via a year-end tournament. There would be an international team event. And a longer offseason of at least two months.
“The current model just isn’t sustainable and could be doing much, much better. And so for us, the Premier Tour is one lever that allows us to address what’s ailing the entirety of the sport. We’ve brought forward a vision that combines the men and women together, from Day 1 and forever more, in a gender-neutral sport that will better address the challenges,” the USTA’s Sherr said. “This is not a short-term Band-Aid. This is about really addressing how to deliver the sport to fans in a much more impactful way.”
What Is Jessica Pegula’s Net Worth In 2024? How The Tennis Star Makes Money
W e're only a few months into 2024, and it's already been a huge year for Jessica Pegula . Not only did she star in Season 2 of Netflix's Break Point , but she's currently the No. 5 female tennis player in the world.
Jessica is set to play in the Miami Open this week, both in the singles draw and as a doubles partner alongside Coco Gauff . If she ends up winning on her own, she’ll snag a cool $1.1 million.
Of course, Jessica has done well in many tournaments over the previous decade. And, while she’s never won a Grand Slam , she’s gotten close, earning plenty of prize money in the process.
So, what exactly is Jessica Pegula’s net worth? Here’s a breakdown.
She’s sponsored by Adidas, Yonex, and more.
Jessica brings in plenty of cash from her endorsement deals, which include Adidas, Yonex, Ready Nutrition, per Forbes . She’s also founder of the cruelty- and paraben-free skincare company Ready 24 , as well as the non-profit A Lending Paw , which supports dog rescues.
In the past, she's also partnered with companies like Stella Artois —which actually came at the behest of tour bestie (and, sometimes, mixed doubles partner ) Frances Tiafoe. When Tiafoe posted his campaign with the beverage company in 2023, Jessica commented, "How do you get a Stella deal? Nobody will cut a check for me," per Tennis.com . But, just a few days later, she announced a partnership of her own.
"I love a brand that moves quickly," she jokingly added, "And can’t wait to see what else Stella has in store!"
Tiafoe's response? "😂😂😂😂😂 this is iconic," according to the publication.
Her career prize money totals nearly $13 million.
Jessica also brings in a ton of cash from her tournamnet wins. She’s netted $12,943,391 in career earnings, according to the WTA ; in 2024 alone, she’s pulled in $560,145.
Some of her biggest earnings likely came from quarterfinal appearances in six Grand Slam tournaments. She has made it to the quarterfinals three times at the Australian Open, once at the French Open, once at Wimbledon, and once at the US Open.
Her parents, Terry and Kim, are billionaires.
Jessica isn't the only Pegula who's gotten attention for her earnings. Her parents, Terry and Kim Pegula , are billionaires. Terry founded East Resources, a natural gas producer, in 1983. Terry sold most of the company in 2010 to Royal Dutch Shell for $4.7 billion, per Bloomberg , and is currently worth $6.8 billion, per Forbes .
And that isn't the couple's only investment. Terry and Kim own the NFL's Buffalo Bills and the NHL's Buffalo Sabres. Kim serves as president of both teams, making her the first woman to be president of both an NFL and NHL team, according to CNN .
But Jessica, who has been referred to as the “world’s richest tennis player” by British press, has also spoken out about how she isn’t a billionaire—even though her parents are. “I personally don’t have that money,” she said during a press conference at Wimbledon in 2023, per Tennis.com .
"It is what it is," she said of the nickname. "It doesn't really bother me. It would be nice if people didn't say that. But do I really care? I mean, not really… I don't really think it matters how much money you have."
What is Jessica's net worth?
While we can't be exactly sure of her net worth, Jessica's earned at least $12 million over the years in tournament winnings. Everyone's rooting for you, Jessica!

The ATP men’s tennis tour’s 2025 calendar includes expanded events in Canada and Cincinnati

LONDON (AP) — The Masters 1000 tournaments in Canada and Cincinnati will increase to 12 days each next season, and events in Dallas, Doha and Munich will be upgraded to the 500 level as part of changes announced Friday when the ATP Tour released its 2025 calendar for men’s tennis.
The calendar reveal comes as tennis is at something of a crossroads, with proposals to alter the way the sport is organized being discussed by its leaders.
The London-based ATP will have 60 tournaments in 29 countries next year.
Other changes include moving the Hamburg Open from July to May, shifting the event in Los Cabos from February to July, and switching the Cordoba Open to Mallorca, Spain, as part of the lead-in to Wimbledon.
The Estoril tournament is no longer part of the calendar, but the tour said it will “try to find a solution for the highly regarded event to take place in 2025, and beyond.”
The National Bank Open in Canada and the Cincinnati Open follow the Masters 1000 tournaments in Rome, Madrid and Shanghai in stretching to 12 days. That other trio all expanded in 2023. It means that as of next season, seven of the nine ATP Masters events will last nearly two weeks instead of one.

Making tennis more fan-friendly — an easier-to-understand and shorter season, for example, and more consistency in TV broadcasts from week to week — could bring roughly a $1 billion increase in annual value, on top of the sport's current revenues of about $2.5 billion, Bolton estimated, by way of rights packages and increased sponsorship deals that could arise from more viewership.
