Alhambra tickets sold out? Try the Granada Card

Alhambra tickets sold out? Try the Granada Card

I usually book my travels way ahead. Sometimes so far ahead, I forget there are certain must-do’s to be able to secure a spot at must-see attractions. This was 100% the case with my trip to Granada Spain. I knew in the back of my mind that I had to buy Alhambra tickets. B ut by the time I actually sat down and wanted to book the tickets for the Alhambra, my preferred time slots were sold out! And this was 3 months in advance for a visit in November!

Can you imagine what it is like if you want to visit the Alhambra in Granada in the summer?!

But, after some digging I discovered a good way to secure my Alhambra tickets at my preferred time slots. I bought tickets for the Alhambra with the Granada Card!

Do you travel to Granada Spain and is a visit to the Alhambra on the top of your bucket list? But are you already too late to find the right tickets? I’ll explain what the Granada Card is and how you can use it to buy Alhambra tickets and see more of Granada Spain.

The Alhambra- Granada, Spain: A must see

When you google image search for Andalusia in Spain, the first things that show up are images of the Alhambra in Granada.

This ancient fortress and the royal palace are on the Unesco World Heritage List and a top attraction in Spain. The current structure has remains of the fortress from 889 AD. You can visit the palaces that were built by the Sultan of Granada from 1333 onwards and you’ll find the additions made in 1492 by the Royal Spanish Court.

A visit to the Alhambra in Granada is an attack on your senses with all the detailed ornaments, the lush and colourful gardens and the dazzling views of the city and mountains around Granada.

Nasrid Palaces at the Alhambra

The Nasrid Palaces at the Alhambra are the true gem of the Alhambra.

These 14th-century palaces consist of patios, gardens and are overflowing with fragile ornaments that dazzle before your eyes. This structure is so rich in decoration and tranquil beauty; you get a true feeling of the time of the Arab rulers.

The Nasrid Palaces have a limited visitor quota.

You need to book allocated time slots to visit the Nasrid Palaces and need to be at the entrance of the Nasrid Palaces as indicated on your Alhambra ticket.

I’ll explain later about the time slots and how it works on your Alhambra tickets.

Gardens of the Alhambra

Once you go through the entrance of the Alhambra, you’ll find yourself almost in a park.

Manicured hedges, cobblestones walk ways, and lush gardens to wander around aimlessly.

The Generalife gardens of the Alhambra are part of the Alhambra but they have their own place. Here you’ll find the summer palace of the royals. And strolling around the gardens is a great experience to escape the hustle and bustle of modern-day Granada.

Alhambra tickets: how does it work?

With all major tourist attractions, the ticket situation can be complicated, and diverse.

When you search for information about tickets to the Alhambra, you’ll find an array of tour companies offering tickets and options.

I’m going to focus on how to get Alhambra tickets online as an independent traveler . If you want to join a tour and have a tour guide, please consider some of these great options .

General Alhambra Tickets

You can buy a general admission ticket for the Alhambra online. With this ticket you can visit the Alcazaba, Nasrid Palaces, Generalife gardens, Carlos V Palace, public baths and the mosque. You have free access to the gardens.

There are numerous options for discounts, but the standard entrance fee for Alhambra tickets is €14. Alhambra at night is €8.

The General Alhambra tickets come in different types:

Morning tickets for the Alhambra: Monday to Sunday from 8.30 am till 2 pm

Afternoon tickets for the Alhambra: Monday to Sunday from 2 pm till 6 pm (Nov till Feb) or 8 pm (March till October)

Evening tickets for the Alhambra: Tuesday to Sunday from 10pm to 11.30 pm (summer) or Friday and Saturday from 8 pm to 9.30 pm (winter).

During your time frame, you can stay as long as you want, but keep in mind the time you need to be at the Nasrid Palaces.

Important: When you buy your tickets for the Alhambra, you need to choose a time slot to visit the Nasrid Palaces.

Alhambra time slots: why is it so important.

What is the best time to visit the Alhambra?

The answer is probably: whenever there are tickets available.

But if you want to enjoy the gardens, you obviously need to visit them during the day.

When you want the place to yourself, then the best time to visit the Alhambra is as early as possible.

I didn’t want to feel rushed and check the time every 5 minutes, so I wanted to go to the Nasrid Palaces before I’d visit the rest of the Alhambra.

Early risers own half the world

Every half an hour, a group of people is being led through the Nasrid Palaces. The earliest time slot is 8.30 am when the whole of Granada is sleeping.

Although these early ticket sell out quickly, they are never at maximum capacity because people oversleep or don’t make it to the entrance on time.

And that is exactly what you’re looking for. The Alhambra can get super crowded with tour groups arriving around 10 am and filling all streets and sights with hordes of people. But not when you go super early.

When you visit the Nasrid Palaces first, you still have the whole day left to explore the rest of the Alhambra. A nd you do not have to keep an eye on the time and you’re free to roam around.

And that was exactly what I wanted.

I wanted to visit the Alhambra as early as possible but all morning time slots were sold out.

Should I compromise by an afternoon time slot?

I decided to look further. T hat’s when I discovered you can visit the Alhambra and book a time slot at the Nasrid Palaces with the Granada Card!

What to do when tickets for the Alhambra, the palace of Granada, Spain are sold out? I explain how to buy Alhambra tickets with the Granada Card, read more.

Granada Card: what is it and how to get it?

The Granada Card is a tourist pass that gives you free entrance and discounts to numerous sights and activities in Granada.

The biggest perk and the reason why I bought it, was the ability to use it to buy last-minute Alhambra tickets.

There are several types of Granada Cards, l ike the g eneral Granada Card, but also the Granada Card City (which doesn’t include the Alhambra), Granada Card Gardens and Granada Card Night.

Each card has different things included, but if your main reason to buy the Granada Card is to see the Nasrid Palaces in the morning, just stick with the general Granada Card.

What is included in the Granada Card?

  • 9 journeys on the local city buses
  • Granada Card: 1 city tour with the Tourist train
  • Entrance to the Alhambra and Generalife
  • Granada Cathedral
  • Royal Chapel and many more sights and attractions in Granada.

How much does the Granada Plus Card costs?

The Granada Card also has discount options, but the standard rate is 40€ for the Granada Card when bought online in advance.

Obviously, these prices are considerably higher than the single entrance fee for the Alhambra. B ut I knew I’d use the extras and wanted to take the bus and visit the Cathedral and Royal Chapel.

And I really wanted to have an early morning time slot for the Nasrid Palaces.

How to buy tickets for the Alhambra with the Granada Card?

Another advantage of the tickets for the Alhambra with the Granada Card is the ease of buying them online. If you want to buy Alhambra tickets, you need to go to the Spanish website.

That is the only point where you can buy legit Alhambra tickets online.

But it starts in Spanish, it has many options, you cannot search for best available dates, it jumps back to the Spanish language each time. A nd all in all I found it very user-unfriendly. Since my first tries, things have changed and you now need to buy via Patronato. Give it a try here .

How to Purchase the Granada Card and reserve Nasrid Palace time-slots?

If you buy your Alhambra tickets as part of the Granada Card, you just go to the website to buy your Granada Card .

Super easy and very user-friendly. You click to purchase a Granada Card by selecting the date you want it to be valid.

After this, you need to select the number of adults and children, and the schedule loads immediately. You see how many tickets are available and you can select the time slot for the Nasrid Palaces by clicking on the button.

Different dates of the validity of the Granada Card pop up and you can select the date when you want to visit the Alhambra and the Nasrid Palaces. 2 time slots pop up, the day time and the evening time. If you select the day time, more options with all the different time slots pop up and you can immediately see how many tickets are available. This is particular useful when you book for a larger group.

Select your desired time slot (9 am is the earliest) and continue to pay.

Easy does it. When the Alhambra tickets are sold out, you might get lucky if you buy the Granada Card instead!

All you have to do now is print the confirmation and bring it to the Alhambra with you. If you want to use the transportation prior, you need to pick up the card at the Tourist Office.

Why do I recommend buying the Granada Card if you want to visit the Alhambra?

Now I understand, the difference between €14 or € 40 is huge (it is 26€ or a nice tapas meal with drinks). And especially for budget travelers this might seem like a bad choice.

If your only reason to travel to Granada in the South of Spain is to see the Alhambra, you better buy the entrance tickets for the Alhambra for €14.

But if you’re like me and would like to visit the Cathedral of Granada and the Royal Chapel and get to use the bus and the tourist train for a number of times AND visit the Alhambra at your desired time slot, then the Granada Card is a life saver!

More included:

There are many other things included, like the Monastery of La Cartuja, the Monastery of San Jerónimo, Science Park Museum, the Caja Granada museum, the House of Zafra, the Cuarto Real and the Sacromonte Abbey.

As I didn’t have enough time in Granada, I cannot tell you what they are like, but when you have the full 5 days to use the Granada Card, I’m sure you’ll find more value for your money.

In total I paid €40 for my Granada Card but used €42,80 of its worth in free entrance fees and bus rides. But the most important thing for me: I was able to buy Alhambra tickets at my desired time slots, when tickets to the Alhambra were already sold out via the main website.

Have you ever been to Granada? Did you visit the Alhambra? What was your favourite part? How did you buy your tickets? Let me know in the comment section below!

I have a question. Do they check your passport number when you use the granada card to enter the Alhambra? I entered one letter of the passport wrongly and they dont allow me to change the ticket

I don’t recall them checking it do thouroughly KC but better contact them direct and sort it out with them.

This was very helpful. Unfortunately for me, just booked a last minute trip to Granada meaning no available tickets for Alhambra on the dates I’ll be there and only 1 available Granada Cards available (I am looking for two). Any other suggestions on how to score 2 last minute tickets for Nasrid Palaces?

Awh that is really a shame Stephanie. I guess the only thing left is to see if any tours have any spots available for you 2 and go with them.

Thank you for the helpful information – I just booked my visit to the Alhambra using via the Granada Card.

So good to hear Jessica. August can be crazy to get tickets so glad you found a spot. I hope you’ll have a great time at the Alhambra.

All the tickets to the Alhambra have sold for the dates I’d like to visit so I thought it would be a good idea to buy a Granada Card.

When I try to buy the Granada ticket I am able to choose a time to visit the Nasrid Palaces (great), but, receive a message stating “It is not possible to select the date of visit to the Alhambra for today” – does this mean I can visit the Nasrid Palace but not the rest of the Alhambra? I’m a bit confused – I’m only buying the Granada card to visit the Alhambra! Thanks.

Hi Sinead, you can’t buy your Granada Card on the day you want to visit the Alhambra and Nasrid Palace. It needs to be in the future. You need to visit the Alhambra and the Nasrid Palaces on the same day, your ticket is only valid for one day.

Thanks for your reply; I was trying to buy for May. Chose a date in May and, then, the above message mentioned came up. Sinead

That sounds like a glitch. I’d contact the Granada Card people and ask for their help to sort you out Sinead. I hope it works out.

Hi can you tell me what the situation is with accesing the Alhambra with the granada card, do you have to queue to get in, or is there a way to bypass queues as you already have a ticket?

Hi Nicola, you don’t have to queue for the ticket office as those are the longest lines. You can go directly to the entrance gate, ticket in hand and go through. It can be that at peak moments, a few minutes waiting is normal. I choose an early morning timeslot for the Nasrid Palace and there you have to wait until it’s the right time. Everyone in that timeslot will get in. My advice would be to go as early as possible as there is so much to see and do at the Alhambra. Have a great trip.

Hello! This was really helpful in making my mind up about getting the Granada Card – thank you. I am trying to chose a slot for the Nasrid Palaces and in regards to choosing the 9.30am one, I was wondering if you would be able to provide any insight into the quickest and simplest way to get to the entrance? My mum and toddler will be with us, so our pace will be slower and I’m hoping there is a way to arrive at it directly (we have a car if that makes a difference). Then we can take our own pace for everything else afterwards. Thank you!

Hi Aysha. Thank you. I took the 9am timeslot myself and just took a cab up to the entrance. It was super quick and mega easy. There are car parks around the entrance of the Alhambra but space is limited and the car park fills up quickly. As you’ll probably spend quite some time at the Alhambra, it might be expensive in the end. From the entrance and ticket office, you can easily walk to the Nasrid palace. With a toddler I’d say calculate up to half an hour. I speed walked the part, not stopping anywhere and not taking any pictures (although it was beautiful and empty) and it took me 7 to 10 minutes. If you choose the 9.30am Nasrid palace entrance, I’d say go up to the Alhambra around 8.30am and take your time to go to the Nasrid palaces. Then you’ll have plenty of time and have the rest of the day to explore the rest of the Alhambra. I hope you’ll gave a great time.

Why did you take a cab if the Granada Card provides bus rides? Can a bus be used to get to Alhambra?

The Granada Card includes a tourist bus that wasn’t available at 7am when I wanted to visit the Alhambra.

I’ve just returned from Granada and the Granada card offers a trip on the tourist site seeing train plus the regular city buses. The only pain was you had to get the bus card by going to the machines along the Main Street in Granada called Gran Via de Colon.

You’re a great travel blogger. Thanks for sharing your useful information it’s help me a lot. Fortunately, I got 2 last slots to visit Nasrid Palaces in early morning. Can’t wait to see how beautiful Alhambra is. I’m going Granada in the first week of October and hope the weather still nice.

Lucky Sasa! I hope you’ll enjoy it. I went in November and October to Andalusia and both time the weather was excellent but you know what they say about the weather…

Hey. We are a group of 4 visiting granada from the 7th night(land at 10pm at the airport) and leave 9th morning for Seville.

Want to ask you is the granada card valid for 3 days for transport service ? Can we pick it up from airport and take bus at 1030 pm from airport to our hotel? Also can we choose madrid palace morning slot and also go at night to view the lights?

Thanks a ton P.s only 8th august is sold out to our bad luck hence considering buying granada pass

Great plans Purvi. The Granada card only includes local transport. Not sure what airport you’re arriving but it is best to use the Granada Card for the Alhambra palace and transport in Granada. You can then just print it or download it on your smartphone. You still need to check the time slots that are available when you purchase the Granada Card. Once you enter the Alhambra, you can stay all day but not the night visit. I hope this helps. More info you can find on the website where you purchase it.

We arrive on granada airport at 10pm. Will local transport service be available at that hour?

Is this a 3 day card? After purchase we would still have to pay 8 euro for night visit?

Thanks a ton

All information can be found on the website of the Granada card and Granada airport. The last bus is at 8pm so I think a taxi is the best option.

Hi, We are arriving Madrid on the eve of 10 July 2018 We are 2 adults and 2 kids ages 10 & 12 from Canada We want to go to Andalucia road trip same like yours but are confuse because at many other forums people suggest taking train & buses except white villages where driving is suggested to explore We have 12 days for Andalucia after that we plan to go to Lisbon & Barcelona Please suggest!

Great plans Shoaib! The cities like Malaga, Granada, Sevilla and Cordoba are well connected by trains. You don’t need a car to get there. But I don’t have experience with that and I did hire a car to explore. I only talk about the things I know from my own experiences. If you do decide to go by car, you can use my road trip plan. All the best!

Hey, if I enter the Al Hambra with my Granada Card, How long am I allowed to stay within the palace? Is there a time limit?

Hi Khadija. You can stay the whole day in the Alhambra, but the ticket for the Nashrid Palace has a time frame. You’ll be escorted through the palace and they will not let you linger behind. It will be approximately 1 hour.

Sooooo good to know! I really want to go to Andalusia and I’ve heard that this is quite difficult to get into!

Great tip. Pinning this for future reference, I hope to make it to Granada soon. The Nasrid Palaces look amazing!

6 Reasons You Should Consider The Granada Card

1. save money, save time.

Like every other city card, buying the Granada City Pass works out cheaper than buying indiviual tickets to each attraction. More so, you also get to skip the scary lines that are often seen outside most attractions in Granada. Hence, save time and save money by buying the Granada Card in advance. You'll have a lot more time and money to explore this jewel of a town.

2. Visit The Best Of Granada

As I mentioned before, the Granada Card covers a majority of the top spots in Granada. With this one card, you can hit up most of the ticketed attractions in the city. You quite literally don't need to buy a single other attraction ticket.

3. Easy To Use

Once you buy the Granada City Pass, you don't need to make any additional purchases over and above the cost of the card. Also, you don’t need to exchange your tickets for the different monuments included. The Granada Card is itself the ticket for all the attractions. It also doubles as a transportation card. Hence, once you print out your card at one of the official pick-up points in the city, you need nothing more to gain entry or hop on a bus!

4. Transportation Is Taken Care Of

You have 1 free tourist train ride and 9 bus rides in the Alhambra public transport network. While you can walk through most of Granada, having these 9 bus rides as a buffer is great. What if your leg wears out? Hop on a bus, for free. The tourist train is also a great ride to acquaint you with the attractions of the city. At the end of the day, get on the train and see the city from the comfort of your seat.

5. Guaranteed to visit the Alhambra Palaces

If you've done basic research about Alhambra Palaces, the first thing you'll learn is that tickets to the Palace are super hard to score. One of the best ways to avoid the hassle is to buy the pass. However, you're looking for last minute hacks to score Alhambra tickets , we have a few.

6. Kid-Friendly Attractions Are Included As Well

The Science Park Museum and the Museum Caja Granada included in the card are great options for kids. They are interactive museums especially aimed at children, but also suitable for grown-ups. Furthermore, the Granada Card has a discount for children aged between 3 to 11 years and costs only €14! Our trip to Granada, Spain. Granada City Card review.

When we had the opportunity to collaborate with Sercotel Hotels , I already knew our holidays with dream destinations. One of these destinations was Granada. Granada is located in Andalusia, South of Spain. Many travellers come from Malaga, Seville or Cordoba. But, in our case it was destination number one.

granada tourist train granada card

We took a direct flight from Barcelona to Granada with a special offer that vueling is launching from time to time. So, it cost us 100EUR, one way tickets for all 4. Yessss, such prices exist. It is true, that the flight was earlier in the morning, but we didn’t get upset, it is exactly what we look for. We love enjoying all day in the place we travel.

Granada is a very special destination, it is very different to what you can see in other parts of Spain . Having a great history, it crosses many different cultures, and every culture left something great behind. Granada granted UNESCO World Heritage Status, below you will see it why.

granada tourist train granada card

Once arrived in Granada, first half of the day we enjoyed at the hotel Sercotel Gran Hotel Luna de Granada. As getting to a really hot weather, we felt like we needed to cool a little bit. And kids, were grateful that we didn’t went exploring from the first minute. After having some family time by the pool, we went on a local bar to eat something.

All the people say it is a must to go for tapas, and I can’t agree more, but with kids, you know, you need a plate of food apart of tapas. Apart, neither one, loves fish so it makes our choice to change in the direction of their needs.

Our second half of the day was all dedicated to exploring the city. Both kids, were tired, and didn’t want to walk too much. So, we thought on the easiest way to explore the city. It was to take a ride on a touristic train of Granada. That was included in our Granada City Card .

This time, we collaborated with Granada Tourism Office , and they provided us Granada City Card. This allows you to enter the main attractions easily, and you can even use it for public transportation. By the end of this post, I will share all that was included in our Granada City Card.

You can’t use Granada City Card for the Alhambra, though. Visiting the Alhambra requires a separate ticket booked in advance, later will share with you the details about Alhambra.

Day 1. Let’s say only half day, we enjoyed that touristic train ride, that takes you to the best places of the city. One round takes almost 1h. It was the most amazing 1h, as we were tired enough, and while seated, we could enjoy all the prettiest places of Granada. Kids have fallen asleep by the end of our 1h journey. Me and hubby wanted to explore more of the city, and enter the Cathedral. But, then, we decided that a stop to eat and go back to the hotel will be a better decision.

granada tourist train granada card

Day 2. The second day of our trip went well, we went directly to the Cathedral of Granada and visited it. It is also included in the price of Granada City Card. The price is 6EUR adult and children till 5 years enter free. The audio guide was included as well on Granada City Card. It was lovely to have it, as listening to the history of a place is a better way to enjoy it.

Granada Cathedral (from 1523) is right in the heart of Granada, and if you’re fascinated by Spanish history, this is a must see.

Two things set it apart: For starters, it’s the first Renaissance cathedral in Spain whereas the others built during this period are Gothic. And second, two of the most notable historical figures from Spain, Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon, are buried next door in the Royal Chapel.

granada tourist train granada card

After amazing Cathedral of Granada, we went to Alhambra. Here to say, we haven’t pre-booked our tickets, ERROR. We thought, that we will be lucky enough to buy those there. At the end, we bought those tickets for the next day, and walked around Alhambra till we got to the city center.

granada tourist train granada card

Many people say, that if you come to Granada and you don’t visit Alhambra and you don’t eat in the famous bar Diamantes, then your visit wasn’t worth it. This saying made us, to go right to Diamantes tapas, but we went for lunch and not only for tapas.

In Diamantes we had to wait in a queue almost 15-20 minutes to enter the place. The local was full, and it was 3pm. The food was delicious, but I think it is a little bit overrated and overpriced. Even though, it is not expensive, we thought that we also ate well in a local bar, that do not have so many reviews and are less famous, and we have paid less.

Don’t get me wrong, the food was great in this place, and the price fare enough. But, we think that it was not worth to wait in a queue with 2 kids, eat in so much crowd, and by the end pay more than in any other place.

granada tourist train granada card

After having our lunch we took a local bus and went to Mirador de San Nicolas. Public transport is included in Granada City Card, very easy to use. Mirador de San Nicolas, was recommended to us, by my co-worker, who went to Granada 1year ago.

One of the best viewpoints in the city is from the Mirador de San Nicolas. Located on Callejón de San Cecilio, this romantic spot has breath-taking views of the Sierra Nevada and Alhambra. Just perfect place, for those who love enjoying views from above.

Mirador de San Nicolas was overcrowded, and we had to wait to take a decent picture there. But, in this case it was worth it. It is a pleasure to stay there and stare at the beauty that surrounds you.

granada tourist train granada card

Little by little we went to take our bus to the hotel, as it was already darkening, but before this, we thought to take a walk through the Arab quarter Albayzin.

Part of the UNESCO site in Granada’s Arab quarter lies Albaycin. Here you will see the Moorish influences in the architecture with hand-painted tiles and whitewashed house.

Due to its hillside location, Albaycin also provides stunning outlooks to the Alhambra Palace with Mirador San Nicolas being the best.

The lights were on, and the streets looked like in a fairytale. It was worth our stroll there. The houses become even more beautiful than without lights. All in one amazing experience. Kids enjoyed taking pictures there. And Damian was asking to buy him a magic lamp like Aladdin.

granada tourist train granada card

It was the longest day for us in Granada, we visited so many places. And I was really proud of our kids, that we did it all together, in public transport and without stroller. It was tough, I won’t lie, but what an experience.

Day 3. Our day began in Alhambra . Even if you buy your ticket for a specific hour, you can enter the fortress during the day, whenever you want. The hour is for getting into Nasrid Palace, where is all real beauty of Alhambra.

Alhambra is the one thing you cannot miss on a trip to Granada. And at the same time it’s also reason enough to even visit the town – it’s that beautiful.

I will write a separate post about how amazing Alhambra is and how to plan your trip there, so I’ll keep it short here. The Alhambra is an Islamic fortress, built in the 1200s and 1300, overlooking the snow capped mountains and city of Granada. It has numerous ruins, gardens, rooms and pools, with the highlight being the Nasrid Palace.

You should schedule at least four hours for a trip to the Alhambra. And if you go with kids, it is almost all day long. We took sandwiches and water with us, but there are several bars and restaurants, that you can eat on the place.

granada tourist train granada card

By the end of the day, we were just so tired, we went back to the hotel. And on our next day we went to Malaga, our second destination on the plan, but about it later.

There are several things we missed, like Flamenco. Which is very famous in these places. In Granada you can enjoy an authentic passionate flamenco dance. And we missed gypsy streets, that we think are a must see place. I think this is a great reason to repeat Granada in our future travels.

We budgeted three days in Granada, which was enough to see all the sights in this post. I’d say 2-3 days is ideal for a couple travels and maybe 4 days if you travel with kids. Because it gives you time to explore, relax and eat tapas aplenty.

Many thanks to Granada Tourist Office for supplying me with a Granada city card. As always, all opinions are my own.

Granada City Card

I think that such kind of card are the best invention ever for traveller who loves to explore cultural side of a city. I wish we could visit more, but with kids, we had to limit our number of spots to visit.

Granada City Card includes entries to museums like:

Catedral de Granada

Capilla Real

Monasterio de la Cartuja

Monasterio de San Jeronimo

Parque de las Ciencias

Casa de Zafra

Cuarto Real

Abadia del Sacromonte

Museo de Bellas Artes

Monumentos Andalusies (Corral del Carbon, Banuelo, Casa Horno de Oro, Palacio de Dar al-Horra, Casa de Chapiz)

That cathedral is beautiful!!!! Wow! I hope to get to visit there someday! Bummer that the food place was a bit overrated though. I’ll have to keep that in mind if I take my kids. Traveling with two toddlers is it’s own adventure.

General view of the Alhambra at dawn, in Granada (Andalusia)

At the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains, between the rivers Darro and Genil, lies one of the most interesting cities in eastern Andalusia . This impressive Andalusian legacy comes together with architectural jewels from the Renaissance and the most modern 21st-century facilities.

Granada has an unmistakably Moorish flavour, as it was the last city to be reconquered by the Catholic Monarchs in 1492. Its gastronomy, craftwork and urban landscape are shaped by its glorious historical past.

Fountains, viewpoints and “Cármenes” – the houses surrounded by gardens which are typical of this city – create delightful, unforgettable neighbourhoods. It is no surprise that one of its historic districts, Albaicín, is a World Heritage Site , together with the Alhambra and Generalife. It was an important cultural centre for many centuries, under both Islamic and Christian rulers, and still boasts an admirable array of culture and leisure activities . Film, music and theatre programmes and festivals are complemented by permanent and travelling exhibitions covering all fields of knowledge. Renaissance palaces are home to seminars, conferences and lectures, while the most innovative infrastructure is ready for larger-scale events.

13 things to know before traveling to Granada

Private tour of Alhambra

Granada photo created by javi_indy

Granada is one of the most incredible gems of southern Spain. It lies at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, the locals have many quirks, and it is an artist hub in Andalusia. The Moores ruled Granada for 800 years, leaving the city full of medieval architecture and awe-striking gardens hidden throughout the city. Given its popularity amongst tourists, it’s hard to know the do’s and don’ts when visiting this remarkable city—That’s why we have researched for you to enjoy your trip to the fullest. Here are 13 things to know before traveling to Granada.

1. How to get there

granada tourist train granada card

The first thing that you need to know is how to get to this must-see city. Granada Airport (GRX) is small but well connected. If you are staying in Barcelona, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, or Madrid and fancy heading down to Granada for a night, this could be a fast and cheap option.  Vueling.com has flights from Barcelona from €30.

Another option is the train. Unfortunately, no high-speed train runs to Granada, but the trains are frequent and comfortable. Tickets are available here on  Renfe.com .

Private transfers

One of the top 13 things to know before traveling to Granada is that private transfers are available from major cities, including Seville. For the ultimate no-stress and comfortable transit, contact us here for a private transfer .

Alhambra Palace in Granada

Undoubtedly, a treasure of Spain, let alone Granada. This astonishing palace dates back between 1238 and 1358. It is a must-see, but there are some things that you should know before going. Purchase your tickets well in advance. We strongly recommend printing your tickets beforehand!! You might be okay with a digital copy, but sometimes the people working there can be funny and not let you in. Another thing to note is that there are some worthwhile tours of the palace. This could be an option if you get stressed in busy tourist destinations. We will handle all the details for you :   Private guided tour of the Alhambra

granada tourist train granada card

We made Cars our point 3 out of our 13 things to know before going to Granada. Forget about the cars, the best way to see this city is on foot. Almost all the streets near the center are for public transport only. The majority of the attractions are here too. You’ll spend more time finding a parking space than you will spend inside Alhambra. You won’t notice the number of steps you are doing, with the magic of Granada pleasing your eyes.

If you have rented a car for your trip to Spain, we recommend parking on the outskirts of the center. Somewhere near  parque ciencias or either the  caja granada museum . You can them hope on a bus to the center.

4. The Language

People speaking Spanish with each other

The Andalusian dialect of Spanish is known for its lack of pronunciation, especially in Granada. The local people use a lot of slang, and the ends of the words seem to disappear too. So don’t be discouraged if you have been practicing your Spanish and it’s not going as planned. It will take a go or two, but you will get there.

5. Flamenco

Flamenco Tablao in Spain

Renowned for the strong flamenco culture and the unique barefoot-style called zambra. Granada is a cultural hub of flamenco. One of the best pieces of advice that we can give you before you travel to Granada is about the flamenco and where to watch it. Sacromonte is a town hidden in the hills known as “the gypsy” neighborhood. For centuries the gypsy populations have lived here in the natural caves nestled in the mountain edge. There is a cave and local hangout, where you can watch an intimate flamenco show high above the city. The acoustics will echo in your ear as the sounds touch your soul on our Granada tapas trail and gyspy flamenco tour .

Alhambra after it snowed

The south of Spain is known for its hot climate and unbearable summers, with temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees. Something to know before traveling to Granada is that it can snow there. Yes, you heard it, snow!! The city’s mountains are called “Sierra Nevada,” aka snowy range. Snowfall is most likely during November, and it may last until late February.  You can even take a ski trip at the Sierra Nevada ski resort .

7. Tapas Culture

granada tourist train granada card

Did you know that the tapas food culture originated from the southern region of Andalucia? The astonishing thing about the tapas culture in Granada is that most of the tapas are free!! After you order a drink, a small plate of meat or a small sandwich will follow. As is most places in the world, the closer you are to the touristy areas, the more expensive the food is. Value for money is still true to tone. You can get a drink and three tapas for €5. Here is the ultimate tapas tour in Granada. Traveling to Granada could be value for money!

8. The Granada Card

Granada Card and Map of the city

The  Granada card  is at number 7 on our list of 13 things to know before traveling to Granada. This card allows you access to the major monuments of Granada, including showstoppers like Alhambra, Catuja, the Cathedral, San jerónimo, Parque de las Ciencias and Caja Granada Museum. That’s only to mention a few.

Suppose you are traveling to Granada and you are on a tight budget. With this card, you get nine free rides on transport and one tour bus included! If you are visiting Granada for a few days, this could be worth your while. One last significant benefit is the ability to avoid queuing. If you are time conscious, this could be just the ticket…well, card.

9. Different Viewpoints

Best viewpoints in Granada

Granada’s most famous viewpoint is called San Nicolás. The views are extraordinary, of course. However, after a long day of museum crawling and monument viewing, watching the sunset somewhere quieter may be more appealing. San Miguel Alto is the highest viewpoint in Granada, with panoramic views of Alhambra, Albaicín, Sacramento, and the entire city. Sunsets are like no other, but they require a climb to see them. For a great view of Alhambra, you can check out Carvajales. This viewpoint is in the town of Albaicín and easy to come by. The top spot for sunset watching is “El Ojo de Granada”, also known as the eye of Granada. See the roofs of the houses catch the last of the orange light, as the valleys and cathedral complete this perfect sunset picture. For a spectacular viewpoint tour click here .

Mobile business phone

When traveling to a new city, safety is of the utmost importance. Granada is a relatively low-risk city, and violent crimes are scarce. The main concern would be pickpocketing in the major tourist areas. Watch out for your phones and wallets. Going out at night is very safe in the vibrant city. There are always people around, given the Spanish late-night culture.

11. Artistic Reputation

Calle Elvira in Granada

A bohemian splendor is not hard to come by in Granada. The Calle Elvira is a superb example of this. The terracotta buildings are complemented by multicolored throws hanging from windows. And the presence of art schools and residencies makes Granada an artistic hub. The city is filled with aspiring artists and galleries to wander and to gain inspiration. Another asset to Granada’s creative reputation is the street art and murals; they are celebrated, not discouranged.

Best views in Granada

Hiking makes number 12 on our list of 13 things to know before traveling to Granada. When traveling to a city and you don’t want to lose your fitness routine, one of the best things to know is what is available. The Sierra Nevada mountains provide such a playground for such activities. Paint a new picture of Granada as you stumble upon the city’s forgotten landmarks, lush fields, and intertwined olive groves. Our guided tour hikes along the main artery of the River, sharing secrets and showing you the underworld view of Granada. See more here:  https://notjustatourist.com/tours/hiking-granadas-river/?c=f0cfb884254d

13. Young City

Woman student photo with laptop

Granada is a young city. It is packed to the brim with ex-pats and people looking for a more relaxed lifestyle. With cheap events and nights out, you can see the attraction for these young people. For a relatively small city, there are eight universities present. University of Granada is one of the biggest in the city.

Why visit Granada?

Granada is the reflection of the splendor of the Nasrid period, present in many of its monuments and in its architectural jewel par excellence: The Alhambra . Considered by many to be the eighth wonder of the world , this palace complex welcomes millions of tourists from all over the world every year.

Along with its undeniable heritage attraction, Granada offers three landscapes in one : beach, mountain, and city. On the same day, it's possible to ski in the Sierra Nevada , swim in the sea, and stroll through Granada's most popular neighborhoods: the Albaicin and Sacromonte .

Granada is also a paradise for art lovers, who'll encounter flamenco shows, historical monuments, and specialized museums . Moreover, Granada's "hippie" atmosphere is unlike any other city in Spain.

Where to start?

The most visited monument in Spain is the Alhambra , the symbol of Granada . It's the perfect place to travel back in time to the Nasrid period . Also, walking through neighborhoods such as the Albaicin , Sacromonte,  or Realejo is a great way to learn about the lifestyles of the different cultures that have co-existed in Granada throughout its history .

If you have limited time, we recommend you consult the itinerary we propose to see Granada in 24 hours . Also, you can't leave the city without sampling the best dishes of Granada's cuisine or without experiencing a flamenco show.

Why visit Granada with kids?

Family overlooking Granada - Visiting Granada with Kids

Visiting Granada with Kids

Granada is one of the most beautiful cities in the Andalucia region. The city has a long history and with its amazing medieval architecture and the Sierra Nevada Mountain backdrop it is a city that is hard not to be impressed by.

Most visitors to Granada will head there mainly to see the city’s most famous gem, the Alhambra, but the city has lots more to offer the family traveler.

Best Way to Get Around Granada with Kids

Whether you are looking at getting around Granada or Andalucia more generally there are definitely two main ways.

The first is by car and drive yourself. Or alternatively you can get the train between all the major Andalucian cities.

Best Things to do in Granada with Kids

Alhambra with kids .

Alhambra, Granada with kids

Alhambra, Granada with kids

Of course no visit to Granada is complete without a visit to the Alhambra. The Alhambra is one of the most important cultural heritage sites in the whole of Spain and should be on your Spain bucket list with or without kids.

The Alhambra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984 and is absolutely spectacular.

The Alhambra is basically a fortress and can be explored solo or via a guided tour. Fun fact, The Alhambra means “red fortress,” which was probably given its name because of the color of the bricks in the light.

We recommend trying to do a guided tour of the Alhambra as it is a better way to bring history to life for kids.

Even with children you will need a few hours to see everything the Alhambra has on offer and be sure to check what type of ticket you have as they are full and half day options.

Top tips for visiting the Alhambra with kids:

  • Visit the Generalife early in morning or late in afternoon so you aren’t outside in the worst of the heat.
  • There are not many places to eat inside the Alhambra so be sure to bring snacks for small children.

Granada Cathedral

Visiting Granada with kids

Visiting Granada with kids

There are a lot of cathedrals in Andalucia and if you are touring the region chances are that you will also be heading to the cathedrals in Seville and Cordoba.

However if you get a Granada Card then it is worth heading into the Granada Cathedral too. It is quite different to other cathedrals in the region and has some amazing architectural features.

Some of the famous Spanish monarchs are buried here including Ferdinand and Isabella which will be of interest to history bugs.

Science Museum

Parque de las Ciencias is a science centre and museum that is a perfect place to visit in Granada with kids.

This is a fun and interactive museum with lots of hands on exhibits that children of all ages will enjoy.

The museum also has a planetarium which even toddlers will enjoy.

Some of the most popular exhibits in the museum include the biosphere room and perception room while toddlers in Granada will enjoy the Explore Room which is hands on with lots of experiments.

See a Flamenco Show

Flamenco shows are a must do on any visit to Spain. If you are visiting with older children then Granada is a great place to see a flamenco show.

The Sacromonte is a great area to see shows when in Granada.

Cuarto Real

Cuarto Real is a must with older kids who love history. Cuarto Real is the former residence of Spanish queens and is a very educational and beautiful place to visit.

If you are visiting in Summer and are looking for something a little less educational, then the Aquaola water park on the outskirts of Granada may be just the ticket.

It is a great place to cool off and if you are traveling with toddlers who are under 95cm tall it is free for them to enter.

Granada tourist train

If you are visiting Granada in summer you will find that it may be too hot to explore the city on foot. Therefore a great way to see a lot of the main city sights is to take a ride on the Granada tourist train.

Visit Alcaicería

Shop

Although most of the city is very European in architecture and feel there are some areas that feel very distinct and unique.

One of these areas is the Alcaicería. This area is one of the Arabic / North African influenced areas. There are some great shops in this area for those looking for Granada souvenirs which sell things like Arabic tea and lamps.

The Alcaicería is located near to the Cathedral of Granada, on Gran Via avenue. It is a great place to shop for souvenirs and also grab for snacks.

Albaicín

Albaicin is another unique district in Granada. This is one of the Muslim influenced areas and is another great area to explore and shops and feel like you are outside of Europe.

Plaza Mirador St Nicolás

Plaza Mirador St Nicolás is a great place to visit in Granada if you want to get great views of the city.

By walking up through Albaicín to Plaza Mirador St Nicolás you will be rewarded with great views of the city and of course the Alhambra.

On the way up be sure to stop at the House of Zafra. This is a traditional Granada home that was built in the 14th Century and is a great place to learn about life at the time in Granada.

If you are visiting Granada in Summer we definitely recommend doing this in the morning rather than the middle of the day as it is too hot to do the walk especially if you are visiting Granada with toddlers.

Day Trips from Granada with kids

There are also a lot of great day trips that you can take from Granada with kids if you decide to base yourself out of the city for a few days.

Some recommended day trips include:

  • Sierra Nevada Mountains – great for those that love the outdoors as you can ski or hike here depending on the time of year you are visiting
  • Nerja Caves
  • Almuñecar Beach – probably the easiest beach to access from Granada with kids.

FAQS about Granada with kids

Is granada stroller friendly / pram friendly.

Granada is quite a compact city but a combination of its hills and cobbles make it a little challenging with a pram or stroller.

For this reason I recommend bringing both a stroller and a carrier with you to visit Granada with toddlers.

Should I buy the Go Granada Card?

If you’re planning on sightseeing in Granadaand seeing more than just the Alhambra then the Go Granada card may be a cost saving to you.

It includes many of the attractions listed above and some of the buses. It is also an easy way to get your Alhambra tickets.
