GENE SIMMONS Looks Back On KISS' First Ever UK Tour In 1976 - "I Was Nervous To Set Foot On Holy Ground"

KISS have posted another KISStory lesson on their official Facebook page , looking back to May 13th, 1976 ‪when the band played their first ever UK show at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester, England. The sold out show a (over 2500 people) was the beginning of KISS' first European tour.

In addition to shows in England, KISS performed in France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and Germany where the Scorpions were the opening act. KISS wrapped up the tour with a final show on June 6th at Ontmoetingscentrum in Harelbeke, Belgium.

Gene Simmons recalls KISS' first visit to England:

Still, I was nervous to set foot on Holy Ground. We got off the jet in full makeup and the fotogs were waiting for us. We came through customs and jumped on street cars at the airport for photo ops. I was aware it was drizzly and grey. I was hoping that would change in the next few days to sunshine. It didn't.

We had a female chaperone/record company person with us. And, she showed us the sites. I thought the least I could do was return the favor. I did.

We visited the Palace and posed with street Bobbies (the English police) and were soon to hit the stage in front of an English audience. Would they like us? Truth was, we never thought much about it. We had a job to do and that was to punish the audience. They had, for too long, stood still for sub par live bands.

The setlist for the Manchester show was as follows:

"Flaming Youth"

"Hotter Than Hell"

"Firehouse"

"Nothin' To Lose"

"Shout It Out Loud"

"100,000 Years"

"Black Diamond"

"Detroit Rock City"

"Rock And Roll All Nite"

Below is some great footage from the British TV show So It Goes covering KISS while they were touring Europe for the first time in 1976:

According to IGN , Stern Pinball Inc. has announced their next pinball machine will be based on hard rock legends KISS, reflecting the vintage '78 game in its layout, featuring the same pop bumpers and KISS light grid of its predecessor. To maintain the vintage effect, Kevin O’Connor, the original artist behind the hand-drawn art of the 1978 machine, returned to do original hand-drawn art for the new machine.

10 KISS classics play while you play: “Deuce”, “Hotter Than Hell”, “Lick It Up”, “Shout It Our Loud”, “Detroit Rock City”, “Calling Dr. Love”, “Rock & Roll All Night”, “Love Gun”, “Love It Loud” and “Black Diamond”. Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons hit the studio to provide custom call-outs as well.

KISS will be released in several models. The Limited Edition and Premium versions will have more features than the more streamlined Pro version, including aforementioned magnetic Paul Stanley feature, additional color-changing LEDs, and an additional bank of classic drop targets.

Now, their last-ever UK shows have now been announced, kicking off with Plymouth Argyle’s Home Park Stadium on June 3, before heading to Birmingham, Newcastle, London’s The O2, Manchester, and Glasgow on July 8.

The band said of the farewell jaunt: “All that we have built and all that we have conquered over the past four decades could never have happened without the millions of people worldwide who’ve filled clubs, arenas and stadiums over those years. This will be the ultimate celebration for those who’ve seen us and a last chance for those who haven’t. KISS Army, we’re saying goodbye on our final tour with our biggest show yet and we’ll go out the same way we came in… Unapologetic and Unstoppable.”

The final UK shows follow their show-stopping headline set at the Download Festival this summer.

Co-frontman and bassist Gene Simmons recently insisted KISS will “continue” beyond touring. The “Rock and Roll All Nite” hitmaker suggested this isn’t the last time fans will see them in their black makeup.

He said: “KISS the touring band will stop. But the touring band. KISS will continue in other ways. I have no problems with four deserving 20-year-olds sticking the makeup back on and hiding their identity.”

KISS first announced their retirement way back in 2000, and with 2023 set to mark the end of their touring career, it’s the longest farewell in musical history. Presale tickets go on sale on Tuesday (December 13) at 10am. General sale takes place on Friday (December 16) at 10am.

Legendary rockers KISS have axed the opening date of a run of farewell shows in the UK.

Fans who were hoping to Rock and Roll All Nite at the band’s gig in Plymouth next week have been told that the concert is, in fact, off.

The rock icons had lined up six shows to make up the UK leg of their End Of The Road world tour. As the tour’s name suggests, the run of shows is expected to be the last time the band will play live on these shores.

Upon announcing the dates at the end of last year, the four-piece said: “This will be the ultimate celebration for those who’ve seen us and a last chance for those who haven’t. Kiss Army, we’re saying goodbye on our final tour with our biggest show yet and we’ll go out the same way we came in… unapologetic and unstoppable.”

However, the six UK dates have now become five, with news of the cancellation of their performance at Plymouth Argyle’s Home Park stadium next Saturday (3rd June).

In a statement, the group explained: “Sadly, KISS and Robomagic, the show’s promoter, have today announced that they are having to cancel the opening night of the upcoming KISS UK tour.”

Citing “travel, equipment and logistical complications” as having caused the cancellation, the statement advised fans that “tickets can be refunded or exchanged for other UK shows,” and that they should contact their point of purchase for more information.

The message continued: “Home Park are disappointed but understand the logistical constraints and wish the band all the best for the rest of the tour.”

A spokesperson for the venue said: “We are really sorry to hear that Kiss can no longer perform at Home Park Stadium this summer.”

KISS will play at the following venues in the UK:

5th June - Resorts World Arena, Birmingham

6th June - Utilita Arena, Newcastle

5th July - The O2, London

7h July - AO Arena, Manchester

8th July - OVO Hydro, Glasgow

KISS announce support act for final UK tour

The band will tour the UK later this summer for the final time

Gene Simmons of KISS performing live on-stage

KISS have announced the support act for their final UK tour, which is set to take place this summer.

The legendary rockers have been on a farewell tour dubbed ‘End Of The Road’ since 2018. They’d announced at the time that  they’d be embarking on one final tour before hanging up their iconic costumes .

Bassist and co-vocalist  Gene Simmons  said in 2018 that they were retiring  out of “self-respect”  and because of the “love” for their fans, although he hinted recently at a significant extension to the farewell tour, promising that  KISS would take their show to 100 more cities  before retiring.

In June and July of 2023, the final ever KISS gigs in the UK will take place, beginning in Plymouth with a stadium show at Home Park before a host of other arena shows around the country.

Of the farewell gigs, KISS said: “All that we have built and all that we have conquered over the past four decades could never have happened without the millions of people worldwide who’ve filled clubs, arenas and stadiums over those years.

“This will be the ultimate celebration for those who’ve seen us and a last chance for those who haven’t. KISS Army, we’re saying goodbye on our final tour with our biggest show yet and we’ll go out the same way we came in… Unapologetic and Unstoppable.”

Now, the band have revealed that they will be joined on their final UK tour by Welsh ragga-metallers Skindred on support. London rockers The Wild Things will open the tour for them.

Benji Webb, Skindred’s ground-breaking frontman, said of the support slot: “BOOM! Opportunities do not come much bigger than sharing a stage with the ultimate Rock n Roll Legends that are KISS.

“All in, Skindred are super hyped and excited to be on this bill adding to the party spirit, what a thrill! Let’s rock ‘n roll all night and party every day. Bring it on!”

KISS’ 2023 UK tour:

JUNE 03 – Plymouth, Home Park 05 – Birmingham, Resorts World Arena 06 – Newcastle, Utilita Arena

JULY 05 – London, The O2 07 – Manchester, AO Arena 08 – Glasgow, OVO Hydro

In an interview last year, Simmons said that he anticipates KISS continuing “in ways even I haven’t thought of”  after the current line-up stops touring.

In an appearance on Dean Delray’s  Let There Be Talk  podcast, Simmons added that he anticipates there to be a long future ahead of KISS. He also discussed where their last ever show might take place.

“We don’t know if it’s [going to be in] New York. I have good reasons why it should be, but the important thing is when it’s the last show, it’ll be the last show,” Simmons said.

“KISS the touring band will stop. But the touring band. KISS will continue in other ways. I have no problems with four deserving 20-year-olds sticking the makeup back on and hiding their identity.”

As well as the UK gigs, the band also plan to reschedule their Las Vegas residency that was  cancelled late last year .

Kiss are ‘crossing over from the physical world to the digital’. The band announced they would continue to perform forever using digital avatars.

Kiss unveil digital avatars at final ever show: ‘We can be forever young and forever iconic’

A towering, high-tech version of Kiss took over from the band at Madison Square Garden, created by the team behind Abba Voyage

When Kiss finally completed the final concert of their final tour on Saturday night – four years after it began, and more than two decades since their first “farewell” tour – they used their encore to debut their afterlife, courtesy of digital avatars.

As Kiss walked off the stage at Madison Square Garden, each of the four band members were replaced by a suite of flying, fire-breathing avatars of their younger personas, towering on screens above the crowd to perform a rendition of God Gave Rock’n’Roll to You II.

The avatars were designed by George Lucas’s special effects company Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) and financed by Swedish conglomerate Pophouse Entertainment. The two companies previously collaborated on Abba Voyage – a popular, lucrative virtual show in a custom-built London stadium that reportedly makes over $2m a week .

“This is the sneak peek as the band [Kiss] crosses over from the physical world to the digital,” Grady Cofer, visual effects supervisor at ILM, told Fast Company . The effect – which “appeared three dimensional and much larger than life” – combines LED projections, lasers, heavy metal smoke and pyrotechnics, and the avatars can be tweaked in real time to simulate audience interaction. “We want to give fans a sense of the many forms this band could take in the future.”

No details have been announced yet for Kiss’s plan with their avatars. “We’re going to figure it out after the tour,” Pophouse CEO Per Sundin said. “Is it a Kiss concert in the future? Is it a rock opera? Is it a musical? A story, an adventure?

“These four individuals already have superpowers. We want to be as open as possible.”

The band introduced the new technology in a promotional video posted hours after their final show.

Kiss’s current lineup – including founders Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, both in their 70s, as well as later members Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer – appeared in a promotional video posted hours after their last show, featuring behind-the-scenes footage of the motion-capture technology used in the avatars.

“People say, ‘Well what are you going to do when you stop?’” Stanley said in the video. “Well, the band will never stop because we don’t own the band. The fans own the band, the world owns the band.

“We can be forever young and forever iconic by taking us to places we’ve never dreamt of before,” said Simmons. “The technology is going to make Paul [Stanley] jump higher than he’s ever done before.”

“And it won’t hurt!” Stanley added.

The band have long toyed with their future post-retirement. Several of their gigs have appeared as virtual reality experiences through former music startup MelodyVR . Last year Simmons mused that their music could live on through a new cast of band members.

“I have no problems with four deserving 20-year-olds sticking the makeup back on and hiding their identity,” he said in a 2022 interview .

KISS manager says band's 'emotional' final show will definitely take place in 2023

They're saying goodbye this year

KISS manager Doc McGhee has confirmed that the band’s final show will definitely take place later this year.

Way back in November 2019, KISS frontman Paul Stanley revealed on the KISS Kruise that The End of the Road World Tour would conclude on 17th July 2021 in New York City, where they formed half a century ago.

Of course, the coronavirus pandemic thwarted these plans, and the End of the Road World Tour was paused for 17 months between March 2020 and August 2021.

After KISS headlined Download Festival last summer, many fans were surprised when, shortly before Christmas, they announced their final ever UK dates for this coming June and July.

The expansion of the tour has led some to question exactly when KISS would wrap up their multi-year swansong trek.

Commenting on their continued live shows, Paul Stanley told Ultimate Classic Rock last month: "We're far from done. I'd like to say that this is the end of the road, but they keep paving more road.

“The only people that seems to bother are the people who hate us. Quite honestly, they've never mattered, and they still don't.”

Now, in an interview with Podcast Rock City, long-term manager Doc McGhee says KISS will definitely say goodbye in 2023.

McGhee said: “The reason why we’re continuing doing this last (tour) is because obviously the pandemic has stopped us from finishing. And the fact that people just wanted to see us. But we had to end it at some time, which will be this year.”

Reflecting upon whether KISS will continue in some form after the final shows, McGhee commented: “There’s a lot of talk about everything. And nobody knows what’s gonna happen in the future.

“So what we’ve kind of put in our minds is let’s go through this like this is the end of KISS as we know it. And whatever comes our way, with technology and everything else, we’ll look at it.

“Will be Gene and Paul out there in makeup? No. I can tell you that. They’re hanging their hats up after the (final) show, which is gonna be very, very difficult and very emotional for them after 50 years of doing this. And they love it.”

He added: "To me, KISS is more like Marvel. There's all kinds of things that can happen with KISS, and probably will. So it's a whole new frontier out there starting in '24."

Yesterday, KISS announced that Skindred are joining them as special guests on their final UK shows this summer. Select tickets are still available from Planet Rock Tickets.

Plymouth Argyle Home Park – Sat 3rd

Birmingham Arena – Mon 5th

KISS Cancel Opening Show on UK Show

by Music-News.com on May 23, 2023

KISS have cancelled the first show on their upcoming U.K. farewell tour.

KISS were scheduled to open the U.K. and Europe leg of the End of the Road Tour at Home Park Stadium in Plymouth, England on 3 June. However, they have had to cancel due to “travel, equipment and logistical complications”.

A statement on the venue’s website reads: “Sadly, KISS and Robomagic, the show’s promoter, have today announced that they are having to cancel the opening night of the upcoming KISS UK tour.

“Home Park are disappointed but understand the logistical constraints and wish the band all the best for the rest of the tour.”

KISS will now open the next leg of their tour at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham, England on 5 June. They will also perform in Newcastle, London and Manchester as well as Glasgow in Scotland.

KISS’ final tour has been ongoing since 2019. After the U.K. and Europe leg, the band will tour North America once more before concluding the run with two nights at Madison Square Garden in New York City in December.

Kiss say farewell to live touring, become first US band to go virtual and become digital avatars

Kiss in concert - new york.

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

On Saturday night, Kiss closed out the final performance of their “The End of the Road” farewell tour at New York City’s famed Madison Square Garden.

But as dedicated fans surely know — they were never going to call it quits. Not really.

During their encore, the band’s current lineup — founders Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons as well as guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer — left the stage to reveal digital avatars of themselves. After the transformation, the virtual Kiss launched into a performance of “God Gave Rock and Roll to You.”

The cutting-edge technology was used to tease a new chapter of the rock band: after 50 years of Kiss , the band is now interested in a kind of digital immortality.

The avatars were created by George Lucas’ special-effects company, Industrial Light & Magic, in partnership with Pophouse Entertainment Group, the latter of which was co-founded by ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus. The two companies recently teamed up for the “ABBA Voyage” show in London, in which fans could attend a full concert by the Swedish band — as performed by their digital avatars.

Per Sundin, CEO of Pophouse Entertainment, says this new technology allows Kiss to continue their legacy for “eternity.” He says the band wasn’t on stage during virtual performance because “that’s the key thing,” of the future-seeking technology. “Kiss could have a concert in three cities in the same night across three different continents. That’s what you could do with this.”

In order to create their digital avatars, who are depicted as a kind of superhero version of the band, Kiss performed in motion capture suits.

Experimentation with this kind of technology has become increasingly common in certain sections of the music industry. In October K-pop star Mark Tuan partnered with Soul Machines to create an autonomously automated “digital twin” called “Digital Mark.” In doing so, Tuan became the first celebrity to attach their likeness to OpenAI’s GPT integration, artificial intelligence technology that allows fans to engage in one-on-one conversations with Tuan’s avatar.

Aespa, the K-pop girl group, frequently perform alongside their digital avatars — the quartet is meant to be viewed as an octet with digital twins. Another girl group, Eternity, is made up entirely of virtual characters — no humans necessary.

“What we’ve accomplished has been amazing, but it’s not enough. The band deserves to live on because the band is bigger than we are,” Kiss frontman Paul Stanley said in a roundtable interview. “It’s exciting for us to go the next step and see Kiss immortalized.”

“We can be forever young and forever iconic by taking us to places we’ve never dreamed of before,” Kiss bassist Gene Simmons added. “The technology is going to make Paul jump higher than he’s ever done before.”

And for those who couldn’t make the Madison Square Garden show — stay tuned, because a Kiss avatar concert may very well be on the way.

Kiss sell music catalogue and face paint designs to ABBA hologram company

Thursday 4 April 2024 15:50, UK

Kiss have sold their music catalogue to the company behind ABBA's hologram concerts.

The US rock band, known for their black and white makeup, have also allowed Pophouse Entertainment Group to buy their trademark and face paint designs.

The deal, which is subject to regulatory approval and reported to be worth around $300m (£237m), includes master recordings and publishing rights.

There are plans for a biopic and Kiss-themed experience following the sale.

The firm, which was founded by ABBA singer Bjorn Ulvaeus, previously agreed a deal with Kiss to turn members of the band into avatars similar to those in the ABBA Voyage arena shows.

Kiss bassist Gene Simmons said: "We have always been breaking new ground in popular culture, and this partnership will ensure that we continue to do so for years to come because what Pophouse is doing is breaking rules.

"We already have several plans in development, where the avatar show is one, a biopic another and a Kiss-themed experience a third. The future could not be more exciting."

Pophouse said Kiss will remain "active" and will be involved in upcoming projects with the company.

In December, founders Paul Stanley and Simmons, as well as guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer, announced at New York City's Madison Square Garden their legacy would continue in digital form.

The virtual Kiss was previewed at the gig with a performance of God Gave Rock And Roll To You at the end of the show.

Stanley said: "Our journey with Pophouse is fuelled by the desire to eternally resonate across diverse facets of global culture.

"As we embark on this venture, we aim to weave our legacy into the tapestry of different worlds, ensuring that the Kiss experience continues to captivate both our devoted fans and those yet to discover the thrill.

"This partnership is not just a chapter, it's an eternal symphony of rock 'n' roll immortality."

In February, American singer Cyndi Lauper announced a partnership with Pophouse which would see her sell her music catalogue, with plans understood to include various projects including live shows.
