Historic walking tour of Amsterdam

Dam Square Amsterdam During Day

This tour will give you an overview of the historic center of Amsterdam and the famous canal ring. Wander through the old town and soak up the architecture of Amsterdam's Golden Age.

If you feel like touring the town with a knowledgeable guide, then have a look at our guided Amsterdam tours website.

Start: Dam Square Finish: Museumplein Walk time: 2 hours

  • Dam Square – This square was once the site of an actual dam that diverted the Amstel River to create the canals of Amsterdam. Visible here are the World War II Memorial , the New Church and Koninklijk Palace . Walk around to the back of the palace to the Magna Plaza Department Store .
  • Magna Plaza – This unique 19th century building was originally the main post office of the city and has since been converted to a shopping center. Walk around to the right of Magna Plaza to the first bridge spanning the Singel Canal.
  • Torensluis Bridge – You can still see the bars of the dungeon that once existed on this site. The statue is Multatuli, a 19th century socialist writer who was an early critic of Dutch colonial practices in Indonesia. Just nearby at Single 166, you can see the narrowest house in Amsterdam. Cross the bridge and continue straight ahead to the next canal, Herengracht, and turn left.
  • Theater Museum – Composed of two buildings, the neoclassical house at 168 Herengracht features Amsterdam’s first neck gable, an oval staircase inside and a beautiful garden out back. The Dutch-Renaissance house at 170 curves with the canal (unique in Amsterdam) and boasts a stuccoed interior. Continue up Herengracht one block to the next busy intersection at Raadhuisstraat.
  • Westerkerk – Looking to the right up Raadhuisstraat you can see the tallest church in Amsterdam, once the tallest in the world at the time of its completion in 1631. For a small fee you can climb the tower for arguably the greatest view of the city. Cross over Raadhuisstraat and continue walking straight along Herengracht .
  • The 9 Straats – As you walk straight along Herengracht, you will be entering an area known as “The 9 Streets.” This area, composed of three square blocks, features Amsterdam’s most unique and eccentric boutiques and cafes. A great place to grab a bite. Continue walking straight until you reach number 361 Herengracht .
  • Canal Houses – Between numbers 361 and 369 you can see 5 different types of gables all in a row. These ornamental roof sections are a staple of Dutch architecture. Also nearby is the Bible Museum at number 368, unique for collection of Bibles as well as its beautiful architecture and interior frescos. Turn left just past the gabled houses onto Huidenstraat and walk two blocks to Spui Square.
  • Spui – A favorite spot for artists and intellectuals, this square, located next to the University of Amsterdam, has been the site of many protests and demonstrations since the 1960’s. You can find the entrance to the hidden Begijnhof , a 14th century convent, by crossing the square and turning into the first alley on your left. From Spui continue south along the Singel canal two blocks until you reach the entrance to the flower market.
  • Bloemenmarkt – Merchants once docked here to sell their flowers along the Singelgracht. Today the barges are more permanent, but still floating. Walk through the market. At the end you will reach Muntplein and the Munt Tower – once part of the old city walls that surrounded the city. Turn right at the end of the market onto Vijzelstraat and walk two blocks to Herengracht. Cross over the canal and turn right.
  • Golden Bend – This section of the Herengracht was once home to Amsterdam’s wealthiest citizens. Look for the eagle atop the house at number 476. Turn left onto Nieuw Spiegelstraat .
  • Nieuw Spiegelstraat – This street is filled with antique stores. Just about everything is for sale, including furniture, glassware, art and jewelry – much of it dating back to the 17th century. Walk to the end of the street and continue around to the right of the Rijksmuseum onto Museumplein.
  • Museumplein – From here you can visit the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum . Also visible at the south end of the lawn is the Concertgebouw, a beautiful neo Renaissance concert hall.

What you can expect

Our Amsterdam History Tour can be taken by bike or on foot, and is an amazing opportunity to learn about the incredible history of the city. Join us on a journey through the past that explains how Amsterdam gained its reputation as one of the most diverse and influential city’s on earth.

Amsterdam was founded circa 1190, when a small community arrived at the mouth of the River Amstel and decided to attempt to dam the river. Our Amsterdam History Tour Starts at Dam Square, where you will learn how this historic location has changed in tandem with Amsterdam as a whole.

Amsterdam has an amazing history

Amsterdam has gone from strength to strength, despite having faced enormous challenges. During the medieval period the city built its name and influence on trading in preserved fish, particularly herring.

During the 17th century the city entered its Golden Age, a period of unprecedented prosperity that catapulted Amsterdam to the forefront of international trade and politics. The spectacular wealth of this period encouraged the arts and sciences. And inspired many of Amsterdam’s most famous artists and inventors, such as Jan Van Der Heyden and Rembrandt.

The 17th and 18th centuries saw the rise to power of the fascinating Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie , the VOC, famous in the English speaking world as the Dutch East India Company. Our tour includes several important East India Company locations. We will stop by the Amsterdam Maritime Museum to view the spectacular Amsterdam ship. A replica of the type of Dutch Indiaman trading ship used by the VOC at the height of its power!

The Amsterdam History Tour covers the rise and fall of Amsterdam as an international trading city

In the 19th century Amsterdam saw a decline in its influence and wealth, but this was also a period of architectural redesign and restructure. Several new stations and museums were built, including the Rijksmuseum and Centraal station, today both considered part of the national heritage of the Netherlands.

During the Twentieth Century, Amsterdam suffered periods of severe unrest, famine and war. During the First World War the city suffered food shortages that caused lethal riots. We will visit the sites of some of the violence and will consider the role of mob action and rioting in the cities history. We will also visit the historic Jewish quarter of the city. There we discuss the long and vibrant history of the Jewish community in Amsterdam, from its arrival in the late 16th century to its terrible suffering during World War Two. And then its incredible revival in the aftermath of the war.

Amsterdam’s breathtaking past has changed the face of the world. From the stock exchange to the groundbreaking works of Rembrandt, from the liberal philosophy of Baruch Spinoza to the social engineering theories of Jan Van Der Heyden, Amsterdam has left an indelible mark on human history. Our tour will help you to understand the city by journeying through its past. And this tour that will bring to life the figures and events that made Amsterdam the birthplace of liberalism.

The Amsterdam History Tour includes:

  • The Dutch East India Company House.
  • The Red Light District.
  • Masterpieces of Dutch art.
  • Widest Bridge and the smallest house in Amsterdam.
  • World’s first Stock Exchange.
  • The Old Church.

Known as the Venice of the North because of its glittering channels that criss-cross the city, Amsterdam has an old history that is represented through its range of historical sites. Originally a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam quickly became an important trading centre during the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century, with stock exchanges and joint ventures giving birth to modern day Capitalism.

Today, the medieval old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and there are a plethora of historic attractions to visit. One of the most well-known is the Anne Frank House, where Anne Frank and her family hid in the secret annexe during the Second World War. Here’s our pick of some sites in Amsterdam which make for essential visiting, plus a handful located outside the capital that are great when taking a day trip from the capital.

Despite my numerous visits to Amsterdam, this was my first encounter with it, and I'm so glad I found it. The canal journey was fantastic, and Jennifer's narration, blending the city's history with poignant stories of the enslaved, gave a whole new depth to their experiences. Grateful for shedding light on these stories and ensuring they're not forgotten. Highly recommend! Read more Written March 10, 2024
  • Wanderer07110443262 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wow! What an amazing and educational experience! As a first time visitor to Amsterdam and travel agent from the US, Jennifer opened my eyes to the Black experience. I was never taught the rich contributions, heritage, and legacy of Black people in Amsterdam. She has meticulously researched and uncovered these gems - hidden in plain sight within the museum walls, along the canal, and in the carvings etched into the buildings around the city. What a mind-blowing and empowering experience. You must take Jennifer's tour to understand ALL of Amsterdam's history. Jennifer was knowledgeable, friendly, encouraged questions and interaction from her guests. I will be bringing all of my travel groups to experience the tour that she has lovingly and masterfully created! I'd give six stars if I could! Read more Written February 19, 2024
