Beautiful Museum van Loon , a private residence built in 1672, offers a glimpse into the lives of the wealthy in the Golden Age. And the Our Lord in the Attic museum in Amsterdam is a fascinating monument hidden in the attic of a 17th-century canal house: a clandestine church from the time of the Protestant Reformation, when catholic church services were banned.

Dutch history is inextricably intertwined with seafaring and trade, and Amsterdam’s National Maritime Museum presents 500 years of Dutch maritime history. Furthermore, a dive into the Netherlands’ past is not complete without learning about the country’s experience of the Second World War, German occupation, persecution of Jews and other groups, and the resistance. Make sure to add the following to your travel agenda: the Freedom Museum (Groesbeek), the Dutch Resistance Museum (Amsterdam), the Overloon War Museum (Overloon) and the Airborne Museum Hartenstein (Oosterbeek).

Museums collect, preserve, research, interpret and present an enormous cultural capital that belongs to all of us.

Experience iconic artworks

Depot Boijmans van Beuningen visitors inside the depot

Dutch art and artists are known the world over. Home to Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Gogh, Mondrian and many others, the Netherlands is often recognized as a ‘land of painters’. From the Old Masters of the Dutch Era (also known as the Dutch Golden Age) to modern icons and contemporary art installations, there is so much to see during your time here.

Of course, you can visit famous venues such as the Rijksmuseum , the Stedelijk Museum and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Mauritshuis in The Hague or Rotterdam’s Boijmans van Beunigen . However, don’t overlook other locations. The Netherlands is home to over 120 art collections . In Wassenaar, stroll through the sculpture gardens of Museum Voorlinden and take in their stunning selection of contemporary art.

Enjoy the wonderful surroundings of the Kröller-Müller , which includes a significant Van Gogh collection and a remarkable sculpture garden. In Haarlem, just a stone’s throw from Amsterdam, you can say hello to Haarlem’s own Old Master at the Frans Hals Museum . And for a closer look at the life of Vincent Van Gogh, visit the artist’s hometown of Nuenen in North Brabant at the Van Gogh Village Museum .

See science in a new light

Rijksmuseum Boerhaaven anatomy

From biology and physics to engineering and space exploration, don your thinking cap at a science museum – big names include Amsterdam’s NEMO and Leiden’s Naturalis. Did you know that the Netherlands is a world leader in scientific research? To maintain this, the Dutch government invests heavily in this sector (over €4.5 billion per year) to maintain this reputation. Discover the long-standing dedication to this field during your trip.

Is the city of Leiden on your list? If so, stop by Rijksmuseum Boerhaave to learn more about the history of medicine and scientific accomplishments. Or take a trip to the stars at Space Expo Noordwijk , where you will uncover the secrets of space travel and out-of-this-world scientific innovations. And for an interactive experience for the whole family, stop by GeoFort in Herwijnen. On this fortress island, learn more about our planet through hands-on activities while also delving into some local natural history.

Explore quirky exhibitions

museums nl tourism

Alongside the art or science museums that you might expect to see, there are also numerous offbeat locations that are worth exploring. If you are interested in experiencing something a little bit different, these hidden gems could make for a memorable day out. Take The Cat Cabinet , for example, located in a stunning canal house in the city center of Amsterdam. It is here you will find a treasure trove of cat-themed paintings, sculptures and more in this personal family collection that also features works by Pablo Picasso and Rembrandt.

If you are more of a foodie, head to the city of Alkmaar to the Cheese Museum . You might have already guessed it, but here you can learn about the history of Dutch cheese, see how it’s made and even taste some samples – yummy! Or swing by Museum Speelklok in Utrecht. A great activity for kids, this museum features a huge range of self-playing instruments, from music boxes to street organs. And if that has tickled your fancy, Amsterdam’s Pianola Museum, which is wholly dedicated to the self-playing player piano, might be for you.

Three tips to make the most of your trip

Save money by purchasing a Museum Pass. Although this is an annual pass, if you’re staying for a week or longer and are planning to visit multiple museums, it could be worth it. You can purchase your pass at various locations in the Netherlands.

Make the most of the pleasant weather during the spring and summer months by visiting one of many outdoor museums and exhibitions throughout the country. And while you're here, be sure to read our tips on how to get the most out of a visit to the Netherlands during spring or summer .

Make sure to look up temporary exhibits ahead of time. Although you may have already visited a certain museum, there are very often new, limited-time-only, collections to discover.

When Italian explorer Giovanni Caboto (or John Cabot as he is locally known) first set eyes on North America in 1497, his first words were “O buono vista!” When translated into English, this phrase means “Oh happy sight!”, which is certainly fitting for what would become the town of Bonavista, the historic site of Cabot's landing.

In the years since, Bonavista has seen centuries pass by, telling the stories of the past and writing the stories of the future. A simple walk through town is an eclectic mix of old worldliness and modern ingenuity. Working harbours are steps away from inviting coffee shops. New businesses operate out of restored historical buildings. It’s a renaissance of sorts – a new wave of entrepreneurial spirit.

And though there’s plenty of it, history and heritage aren’t the only things on prominent display in Bonavista. Several trails in the Hike Discovery Trail Network provide ample opportunities to enjoy nature, including spotting whales, birds, and icebergs. Enjoy Bonavista by bike, foot, or boat – the choice is yours. O happy sights, indeed.

Explore Attractions

Small huddles of houses, new and old, sit alongside rocky shores, pebble beaches, and picturesque fishing boats. Dense forest becomes amazing shoreline, frequently visited by whales, seabirds, and icebergs.

On the waterfront, the Ryan Premises National Historic Site and the Bonavista  Museum bring to life the salt fish trade – the cornerstone of Newfoundland and Labrador's economy for centuries. The nearby Mockbeggar Plantation Provincial Historic Site tells a story of the battle for Confederation. Follow the beautiful boardwalk around the harbour, step inside a full-scale replica of Matthew , Cabot’s ship, and imagine how the explorer felt on his epic voyage to North America.

Catch a glimpse of 10,000-year-old icebergs from the top of the Cape Bonavista Lighthouse Provincial Historic Site, and gaze over the horizon where lightkeepers have stood watch since the 1840s. If you look close enough, you might catch a glimpse of a puffin nesting ground just behind the lighthouse or a humpback whale. Now, if that doesn’t brighten up your day, nothing will.

The Discovery UNESCO Global Geopark invites you to discover a little more about your geological past. Unearth fossils and formations, half a billion years in the making. Learn the plots, conflicts, and characters that tell the stories of life on this planet: the geological wonders here have borne witness to them all.  At the Dungeon, the cliffs drop away into a mammoth sinkhole with two seaward channels, the result of years of ocean erosion. In fact, throughout the peninsula the ancient past is recorded in the land and seascapes.

If you’re lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, the Bonavista Biennale is a must-see event. This bi-annual, international exhibition of contemporary visual art features Indigenous, provincial, and international artists of the highest calibre, installed on the landscape and in historic buildings throughout the area.

Looking to enjoy a show? Get front-row seats to our thriving arts and culture scene at The Garrick Theatre, a big-city venue in the heart of a small town. From live performances to state-of-the-art digital cinema, you can watch encore after encore.

With priceless artworks by some the most important artists ever to have created and invaluable historical collections, Amsterdam 's museums and galleries astound for their quality as well as their quantity. Despite the Dutch capital's compact size, scores of options abound across all genres, spoiling visitors for choice.

These are the best museums Amsterdam that you won't want to miss.

Woman looking at bust in Rijksmuseum

Rijksmuseum: best for Dutch masterpieces

Rembrandt’s epic The Night Watch , Vermeer’s Milkmaid and Jan Steen's The Merry Family are just a taster of the Golden Age gems among the paintings at the Rijksmuseum . The museum is also a spectacular setting for collections spanning Delftware porcelain to exquisite dollhouses, with sculptures gracing the rose-filled garden outside.

Completed in 1885 to house the country's and monarchy's collections, Pierre Cuypers' rambling neo-Gothic and Dutch Renaissance building is a national treasure in itself.

Van Gogh Museum: best for the artist's legacy

Some 200 paintings and 500 drawings make up the world's largest Van Gogh collection at Museumplein's Van Gogh Museum . Learn about this legendary Dutch artist's life and travails through vividly colored creations like Sunflowers , The Yellow House and Wheatfield with Crows , and 700 hand-written letters (you can listen to recordings). Works by fellow artists including Gauguin (with whom Vincent shared the 'yellow house' in Arles in the south of France), Monet and Toulouse-Lautrec provide further context.

Stedelijk Museum: best for modern and contemporary art

The third jewel in Museumplein's crown, Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum , occupies a neo-Renaissance former bank and aptly named 2012 extension, 'the Bathtub'. Picasso, Matisse, Mondrian, Lichtenstein and Jeff Koons are among the artists represented in its 100,000-strong permanent collection's rotating exhibitions held alongside cutting-edge temporary shows.

Exterior of the Rembrandt House Museum in the old Jewish quarter of Amsterdam.

Museum het Rembrandthuis: best residence museum

Rembrandt worked on The Night Watch at this grand Nieuwmarkt canal house , where he ran the Netherlands' largest painting studio from 1639 until the 1650s. When the house was sold to pay his creditors, the inventory allowed it to be faithfully recreated in 1911 as a museum. Visiting feels as if the great painter will be home any moment. You'll see his client reception room, living room, bedroom and prized 'cabinet' (an entire room) of curiosities he collected but the highlight is his studio, where he created.

Anne Frank Huis: best for WWII history

Easily Amsterdam's most moving museum, the Anne Frank Huis is a confronting reminder of WWII's tragedies, particularly the "Secret Annexe" of the office and warehouse premises where young teenager Anne and her family hid from the Nazis for over two years, until they were deported to concentration camps. After the war, Anne's father Otto, the only survivor, found Anne's diary amid the debris on his return, publishing it and preserving the empty rooms.

Joods Historisch Museum: best for Jewish history

Four 17th- and 18th-century Ashkenazic synagogues are the setting for Amsterdam's Jewish Historical Museum . Covering history of Jews in the Netherlands, it has early illustrated books, first-hand interviews, excellent temporary exhibitions and a children's museum set up like a family home showing Jewish life and traditions.

Tropenmuseum: best for world cultures

Amsterdam is one of Europe's most culturally diverse cities, with 180 different nationalities calling it home, and the sensitively curated Tropenmuseum conveys a shared sense of humanity through universal experiences such as celebration, mourning, decoration, clothing and prayer across its displays; artefacts stolen in the colonial era are eligible for restitution. Temporary exhibitions delve deeper into themes such as healing practices. The magnificent arched building was constructed in 1926 to house the Royal Institute of the Tropics (still a leading research facility).

Cyclists outside Vondelpark in Amsterdam

Amsterdam Museum: best for local history

In the former civic orphanage, Amsterdam's history museum weaves together its story over the past millennium through multimedia exhibits, religious artefacts, porcelains and paintings. Displays also include the rise of bicycle use. Its Civic Guard Gallery, with group portraits featuring medieval guards to denizens like Anne Frank and Alfred Heineken, is free.

NEMO Science Museum: best for families

Five floors of hands-on exhibits at this green-copper, boat-shaped science museum make it a fantastic outing with kids. In "Life in the Universe", for instance, they can guard the planet from comets, UV radiation and solar wind with a shield, and handle a 4.6-billion-year-old meteorite, while in the "Laboratory" they can put on a lab coat and conduct experiments. On the free, panoramic rooftop deck, playing with water, flying a kite and using their body as a sundial to tell the time teaches the next generation about renewable energy.

Fashion for Good: best for future-proof fashion

A world first, this sustainable fashion museum makes you rethink what you really know about where your clothes come from and their impact on people and the planet. Exhibits look at sustainable materials and industry innovations such as recycling and upcycling, and encourage visitors to commit to positive action.

National Maritime Museum Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam, featuring an old replica sailing ship.

Het Scheepvaartmuseum: best for maritime history

To truly appreciate Amsterdam's history is to understand its connection to the sea. The city's maritime museum is an ideal primer, with seafaring displays such as Golden Age maps. Outside the 17th-century admiralty building, you can board a full-scale replica of a Dutch East India Company ship.

Foam: best for photography

All forms of photography – film and digital, local and international – feature at Amsterdam's foremost photographic gallery, Foam . In a light-filled canal house, it mounts four exhibitions a year, including major names, and is renowned for unearthing and nurturing new talent.

Other intriguing museums: best for niche interests

Beyond these standout attractions, even the most specialized of subjects have dedicated Amsterdam museums: houseboats (the Houseboat Museum ), house music ( Our House ), historic trams ( Tramway Museum ), pipes ( Amsterdam Pipe Museum ), pianolas ( Pianola Museum ), bibles ( Bijbels Museum ), microbes ( Micropia ), plus many, many more to explore.

HISTORY: The Birth of the Modern Civil Rights Movement in America

The arrest of Rosa Parks on December 1, 1955, for her refusal to yield her seat on a Montgomery public transit bus to a white man, in defiance of local segregation laws, provided the impetus for change in the city and the nation. Organizations such as the Women’s Political Council, the NAACP, and ultimately the Montgomery Improvement Association mobilized to use Parks’ arrest as an opportunity to challenge Montgomery’s unjust segregation laws.

The day after Parks’ arrest, approximately 50 men met at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church and planned a one-day bus boycott for the following Monday, December 5. They also arranged for a citywide meeting to be held that same evening to determine future action. The Rev. A.W. Wilson, pastor of Holt Street Baptist Church, offered his church as the site for the mass meeting. Meanwhile, more than a dozen men convened at Mount Zion A.M.E. Zion Church on the afternoon of December 5 and formed the Montgomery Improvement Association, appointing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as its president.

Following a day of virtually empty buses rolling through the streets of Montgomery, an estimated 5,000 people gathered at Holt Street Baptist Church, overflowing into the streets, parking lots, and surrounding area. From this meeting, one of the most successful boycotts in history was launched, directed for its duration by Dr. King. Thus, the modern Civil Rights Movement was born.

The organizational strategy of the Montgomery Bus Boycott provided a model for civil rights activism throughout the country for the next two decades. Black Montgomerians, through courage, dignity, and nonviolent action, helped effect societal change and ensure freedom and justice for all.

The Holt Street Baptist Church Historical Society aims to preserve the history of the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the movement it launched through the creation and maintenance of a museum to be housed in the church where thousands gathered in support of the boycott. The museum will serve as a repository of historical materials on the boycott and Holt Street Baptist Church and as an information center with small exhibitions on the Civil Rights Movement in Montgomery and Alabama. It is the society’s goal, through this educational, cultural, and research center, to sustain the rich heritage and history of Holt Street Baptist Church, the movement in Montgomery and Alabama, and the church’s role in it.

The society seeks to promote understanding of the role of the Montgomery Bus Boycott in the struggle to gain civil rights for people of color in this country and to augment their participation in the democratic process and the free enterprise system.
