The menu has changed and the portion sizes are very small. Garlic mushroom starter consisted of a small slice of bread with 2 mushrooms on. Side order of cheesy garlic bread was a very small slice too! Not at all value for money!! The chips on main course didn’t seem fresh. Meals I have had here in the past have been good but this one was poor in comparison. Even the waitress said that quite a few people have complained about the menu!! The menu needs improving and so does the portion sizes. I won’t be visiting this restaurant/pub again.

My wife and I had the meat and fish sharer. Then the lambshank pie followed by the salted caramel sundae for dessert. Every morssal was delicious. The service was also very good. The girls were courteous and friendly. The whole experience was delightful and then to get a blue light discount too made it even better. We'll done everyone. I would recommend the Travellers to anyone

Thanks so much for letting us know how we got on Dean! So glad you enjoyed our new menu, we're really excited about this one as it's our biggest change yet and it's fantastic to hear how much our guests are enjoying it. The lambshank pie really is something special isn't it, along with all our new dishes ! Thanks again, and we look forward to seeing you again soon!

Booked a meal at 13.00 on the 7 March 24 on line which was easy to do. The meal we ordered was good, the starters of garlic mushrooms and Korean chicken strip were excellent. My wife and I had the special belly pork dish which i enjoyed but my wife thought that it may be more traditional but and thought it was ok. The quality of the food was very good and the service too. The people who work there are very attentive without being too intrusive and very friendly. Overall a very good experience one to which we will do again. thank you.

Hi B8212dofrankh, great to hear you enjoyed your visit to our pub. So glad you you enjoyed your meals - the pork belly has been massively popular since having it on our specials. Look out for our new spring menu launching on 20th March for more delicious treats Thanks for letting us know how we did and I will pass on your kind words to the team!

Wonderful salmon Florentine great service thanks travellers rest for a great experience. Food was a bargain will come again

Thank you so much for the wonderful feedback! The salmon florentine is certainly a popular lunch dish... we have some really exciting new dishes coming too on our new menu launching 20th March so we look forward to seeing you again soon to check them out. Richard and teamtravs

We came to the Travellers rest for lunch today and would definitely return. The staff are really friendly and give a good atmosphere to eat in. Food was delicious and very good value for money. £9 for a main and dessert! Very nice pub would return

Our Sunday lunch at the travellers rest yesterday 2nd March was the worst one we have ever had! and the most expensive! We were looking forward to our lunch, but were very dissapointed, firstly with our long wait, nearly an hour!! and we were starving, as it was 2oclock when we arrived!. The waitress came over to appologise about the delay, saying they were waiting for fresh roast potatoes to be cooked, 5 minutes after that our meals arrived. The meat was fine and the veg were ok, but a big yorkshire pudding (a frozen variety not home cooked! and like a big frisby!!) was covering our 5 tiny, cold ,overcooked roast potatoes, DEFFINATELY not the fresh ones we were supposedly waiting for! I asked if there were any mashed potatoes to at least fill us up, and a young man bought out a tiny dish between us! Hence we will not be eating there again! I don,t normally complain, but when you are looking at that on your plate, and being charged £9.99 for it, I had to say something. The waitress only charged us for 1 meal which was still too much! A man on the next table also complained but he at least got the fresh potatoes not the old stock!! Enjoy your meals....

Everytime we go to the travellers rest we never leave disappointed. The food is excellent and the staff are very helpful and friendly.

I have just been reading the review about Christmas Day, and I do not normally write but I thought I would as we also went on Christmas Day and it was brilliant everything food service we had a really lovely day, we also booked at 1ish and it was a lovely time as no one after us so it was a really comfortable lunch brilliant.

“Good food but confusing experience” Review of Tamasha Grill Restaurant Mapperley

travellers rest mapperley top nottingham

We had a nice breakfast here - the food is probably the best available on Mapperley Top, but the prices do reflect that. A few minor niggles - a friend and I both ordered the same dish (avocado on toast) but I was delivered 2 huge pieces of sourdough, whereas she was given 1 piece cut in half? Surely the same dish (at the same price) should be the same portion? Another friend also ordered extra hashbrowns as the vegan breakfast wasn’t listed as having any - only to have 4 arrive on her plate! And obviously she wouldn’t have ordered the extra if the meal listing had been correct. Our food also took almost an hour to appear… Ultimately we will probably go back as the food is good - but I think a few things need to be ironed out!

Expensive for what it was, main course came very quickly ( maybe microwaved ?) then very slow service, asked to pay the bill and vacate the table whilst we were still waiting for our deserts ?? Very average food , poor service, won’t be returning anytime soon . Seem to be packing too many people in, not the dining experience I was expecting

Disappointing service & wait times let this place down. Not to mention if you order “Tamasha Rose Lemonade” for £4 you only get half of a small bottle of lemonade in a glass. The tables are squashed together, we (along with many others) were waiting to be seated, crammed in by the bar - with servers & diners trying to get past…it was just an awful experience. We eventually were seated & started eating over an hour after our table was booked. Every time a waiter/waitress came to the table, they were lovely and polite and apologised for taking so long but that wore thin on the 3rd time & nothing was offered to “soften the blow” - all in all the whole service let this place down & when you spend so much for top market prices , you expect service to be top notch too. Go other places nearby that are less expensive & pride themselves on service. Tamasha means “commotion or fuss” and yeah it was a commotion in here with so many people crammed in.

Came for a meal with my partner and we thoroughly enjoyed the entire meal. The service was incredible and staff were so polite. The only thing that let us down was the man we were sat next to who was rude and rowdy towards a staff member over the prawns which we ordered ourself. For having a shell on(which they didn’t), however it was handled efficiently and professionally and once he left we were back to enjoying our meal. Such a shame that there’s adults who seem to think it’s okay to speak to servers in this manner. Besides that the drinks and food were 10/10 and I would definitely recommend… we will be returning✅

Scarlet was a superb hostess. Jack the barman was a wonderful guy. Great atmosphere and food was exceptional. 4th visit would recommend the restaurant and its staff. Thank you for looking after us!

“Tastiest breakfast!” Review of Bread and Bitter

amazing dishes

We visited with our little dog, we chose American Breakfast, and full English. It was the tastiest breakfast I have had for years, the sausages and bacon and egg were very good quality, everything was cooked to perfection. Would recommend, very friendly staff, and relaxed atmosphere.

Needed a dog-friendly pub to take our daughter for a meal whilst we visited her in Nottingham. Had a fantastic meal here. Lovely staff, great atmosphere and a superb selection of beers. Highly recommended!

Glad to hear you enjoyed your time in the pub! Hope to see you again soon whenever you're next visiting your daughter 😊

Came with my husband Danny, we had such a lovely evening. Couldn’t fault the staff, especially a young lady called Gaia. Best spot in mapperley top.

Ah bless you. Thanks for taking the time to leave us a lovely review. I will pass your comments onto gaia and hope to see you again soon 😁

Simple decent food, no fuss, cheese & ham toastie with nice light crispy chips but if fresh salad, lovely. Be warned the Greek Mezze is enough for 2 people! Tasted delicious. We’ll keep ales

Hi, glad you enjoyed your visit. Hope to see you again soon.

Hipster pizza very good, nice bottle of wine, good table. Surprised it was not busier on a Saturday night before Christmas. Offered a box to take leftover pizza home. Glass collector was a little over-keen but just a minor training issue I would say.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to leave us a review. Glad you enjoyed your visit and hope to see you again soon 😁

Locked up in Nottingham in March - From dangerous driver to violent robber

Arson, GBH, dangerous driving and robbery all feature in this month's round-up

  • 04:00, 1 APR 2024
  • Updated 08:51, 1 APR 2024

Sarah Turner, Emily Banks and Stephen Turner

Never miss a crime story with our free email updates

We have more newsletters

March has seen many serious cases go through our courts. From a dangerous high-speed driver putting the lives of others - and his own - at risk, to a woman who poured boiling water over a love rival, the stories have come thick and fast. Here, reporter Martin Naylor highlights some of those which he covered during the month.

Adrian Johnson

Heavily-convicted Adrian Johnson led police on a high-speed chase through busy residential streets in Sherwood during broad daylight on an uninsured off-road bike. Footage played at Nottingham Crown Court showed the unlicensed 44-year-old jump a red light and cross a central reservation while topping 50mph.

The defendant, of Forest Fields and who has 145 previous offences to his name, also drove on the wrong side of the road and narrowly avoided causing a head-on collision with an oncoming car. At the time, he had only been convicted of carrying out a Christmas shoplifting spree three days before at the city’s magistrates’ court.

And all of the offences put him in breach of a suspended sentence order, handed to him for burglaries by the same judge who activated almost all of it in full. Jailing the defendant for a total of two years and five months, Judge James Sampson KC said: “You have an appalling record with over 140 criminal offences on your record (and) as I have just graphically watched this was a bad case of dangerous driving

"If you had not been stopped you could have killed someone. Driving like this presents a danger to the public and it is so serious that only a custodial sentence is appropriate.” The pursuit happened on the afternoon of January 15, this year, and Johnson, of Radford Road, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and criminal damage.

He also admitted to breaching both a suspended sentence order and a community order for the earlier offences. As well as the jail sentence, the judge disqualified Johnson from driving for 32 months.

Sarah Turner

Masked and armed Sarah Turner befriended and then robbed her stage-four cancer-suffering neighbour on the 71-year-old victim’s own doorstep. The 38-year-old drug addict, of Clifton , covered her face with a scarf and threatened the woman with a screwdriver when she forced her way into her home and demanded cash.

The defendant, who has 21 previous convictions for 63 offences on her criminal record, then left her terrified victim worried for months that she would have to relive her ordeal giving evidence before pleading guilty on the day of her trial.

Jailing her for three years and seven months, Judge Stuart Rafferty KC said: “Your victim was 71 years of age, she thought you were her friend. She had shown you kindness previously and you decided that you would rob her in her own home during the early hours of the morning.

“She was alone and you knew she was suffering from cancer but you did not care about any of those things at all because your desire to get drugs overwhelmed everything else. You left her in a state of fear and anxiety about other people and that will never leave her.

“What you did to her will remain with her for the rest of her life.” The robbery took place at around 5am on May 10, last year and Turner, of Highbank Drive, initially denied any involvement but later pleaded guilty to robbery.

Nicholas Jackson

Prolific and hugely-convicted burglar Nicholas Jackson was jailed for twice breaking into the same pub in two weeks to steal booze. The 51-year-old also carried out two thefts in Clifton when he was at large having failed to turn up for court to face trial for earlier targeting the West Bridgford boozer.

The defendant, who has 101 previous offences to his name, was snared by DNA left on a bag of booze he dropped when scaling a fence to escape from a hospital night warden who was trying to catch him. And the father, of Mapperley , then refused to return an e-scooter he stole from a woman who knew him and who told him she would not go to the police if he simply gave it her back.

Jailing him for a total of three years and three months, Judge Stuart Rafferty said: “You are 51 now and you have spent half, or perhaps more than half of your life committing crime and being caught. You might just conclude you are not a very successful criminal at all.

“You have reached an age now where your life just flashes by. The difficulty you have and I have is that for month after month after month you refused to accept the reality of your position, which was having committed these two burglaries, there was clear forensic evidence you were the burglar and you refused to accept that evidence.

“Then, when you were required to come to your trial, you dropped off the grid to the point that even your solicitors did not know where you were for a considerable period of time.”

The two burglaries both happened at the Gamston Lock, in Radcliffe Road, in December 2021 and Jackson, of Fletcher Terrace, off Querneby Road, pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary and two counts of thefts. His 46 convictions for 101 offences include 22 burglaries.

The wife of hard-drinking, gambling addict Sandu Sava moved to two different countries to get away from him but he tracked her down to Nottinghamshire and threatened to kill her. In a victim impact statement, the defendant’s partner told how she genuinely believes her husband will end her life when he is released from jail.

The 48-year-old father-of-three followed her from Italy, to Romania and then to the United Kingdom where he promised her he had changed his ways and she was too scared to turn him away. But almost immediately after moving back in with her, the defendant began a campaign of domestic violence, almost always when he was drunk and arguments erupted over his booze consumption and his gambling.

Jailing Sava for two-and-a-half years at Nottingham Crown Court, Judge Mark Watson said: “You instilled in her a fear of violence on many occasions, your pre-sentence report concludes that you have shown no remorse or insight into your behaviour and you pose a high risk of causing serious harm. The issue in your relationship is drinking and gambling and when those subjects were raised you would shout her down and damage her property and she did not report matters to the police as she was frightened about your behaviour.

“Over the past decade she has lived in fear of you both in Italy, Romania and now here.”

Sava, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to controlling and coercive behaviour and making threats to kill. He has no previous convictions in the UK. As well as the jail term, the judge handed the defendant a lifetime restraining order not to contact his wife or their youngest daughter. He said as Sava arrived on a tourist visa he is likely to be deported back to Romania when he is released from jail.

Emily Banks and Stephen Turner

Emily Banks left a disabled love rival’s life ruined when she deliberately poured boiling water over her while the victim’s ex-husband closed the door and left his new partner to it. A trial heard how the jealous 30-year-old’s defenceless victim, who cannot move her left side following a stroke, suffered burns to 15% of her body after the defendant poured up to two litres of red hot liquid on her as she lay helpless on the floor.

As she did so, having earlier knocked her to the ground, co-defendant Stephen Turner whose Radford address the attack took place at, just shut the door despite the victim’s screams of pain. And the pair even refused to admit their guilt, making the woman relive her ordeal giving evidence where it was put to her that she inflicted the horrific burns to her own body herself.

Jailing 30-year-old Banks for 10 years and Turner for eight years, Judge Mark Watson said: “Both of you subjected (the victim) to what can only be described as a nasty ordeal culminating with you, Banks, pouring boiling water over her as she lay there defenceless. She had no mobility on her left side having suffered a strike, she was powerless to defend herself.

"She described feeling like her body was on fire and begged you to let her go. Throughout this you called her ‘a whore’ and told her Steve was yours. Mr Turner saw you throw the water over her but he just waited outside the room having closed the door leaving Emily Banks to attack her.” The incident took place at Turner’s address in Hazelwood Road, in the early hours of July 8, last year. Turner, 69 and Banks, 30, of The Priory, were both found guilty of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm with intent following a six-day trial.

Terry Matthews

Drunk arsonist Terry Matthews deliberately set fire to a neighbour's car during a “revenge attack” in Hucknall . The 44-year-old father-of-one used firelighters to start the blaze but had to return 90 minutes later as his initial efforts failed to ignite.

The alcohol-dependent defendant’s dispute with the woman, whose seven-seater Citroen he set alight, was her partner allegedly carrying out a faulty repair on his father’s van which had cost him £7,000.

And despite the defendant and victim still living next door to each other and there being no repeat of any issues between them, he was still jailed for a year for the arson. Sending him to prison, Judge Nigel Godsmark KC said: “People go to prison because fire is so dangerous.

“You have a problem with alcohol which I am asked to try and help you with, but this is, in essence, a revenge fire which you thought about and came back to, to make sure it kept going.”

The incident happened where Mathews and the victim both live in Barbara Square on the evening of February 2, 2022 and the defendant pleaded guilty to arson.

Kyle O’Connor

Newark drug addict Kyle O’Connor went on a spree of crack cocaine-fuelled criminality across Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire during which he:

Twice rammed police cars during high-speed pursuits in a bid to flee.

Forced his way through gates at a remote house in the countryside to steal thousands of pounds of tools.

Tried to ram-raid his way into a local business.

Filled barrels with almost £400 of fuel at a petrol station then drove off without paying.

Smashed a hole in the roof of a shop, climbed in and swiped sweets and energy drinks.

Drove while uninsured, unlicensed and while under the influence of class A substances.

During the spiral of offending, the 31-year-old, caused thousands of pounds of damage and left victims counting the cost as he relentlessly carried on breaking the law to pay off debts he and his partner had accrued through their addictions.

Handing him a total prison sentence totalling two years and eight months, Judge Nigel Godsmark KC said: “I have to deal with you for a string of offences carried out in three blocks. In one respect that is part of the problem because you were caught, carried on, caught and carried on again.

“Some of the offences are particularly serious, all of the driving offences are especially bad.” The offences took place in August, October and December, last year and O’Connor pleaded guilty to a spectrum of offences including burglary, attempted burglary, theft, dangerous driving, driving without insurance or a licence, criminal damage, making off without payment and going equipped for theft. The defendant has 13 previous convictions for 26 offences.

Connor Cooper

Connor Cooper barged his way into the home of an 80-year-old pensioner, knocked him to the ground, kicked him to the chest and threatened to kill him during a terrifying break-in. Nottingham Crown Court heard how the victim bravely tried to fight off the heavily-convicted 22-year-old by hitting him with his walking stick as he lay on the ground. The defendant, of Newark, then ransacked the house looking for items to steal but left empty-handed before smashing a window to escape. Jailing him for four years, Judge Stuart Rafferty KC said: “On that evening you were wearing a mask and gloves and you chose to pick up a weapon - a hammer - and you knew yourself this was an old man who was living at the address who you thought would not give you any trouble.

“In fact he tried to stop you, for which he is to be commended, by hitting you with his stick as he lay on the ground, after you had hit and kicked him and threatened to kill him. To say you did not know what you were doing just does not wash.

“You took a calculated risk so you could get in and out of the property without disturbing him.” The burglary took place at the pensioner's property in Brandon Close, Balderton, Newark, on the evening of January 28, this year.

Cooper, of Parliament Court, denied any involvement when he was arrested and questioned by the police. But he later pleaded guilty to burglary and has previous burglaries on his record of 10 convictions for 33 offences.
