The 17 Best Men’s Travel Shirts for Style, Comfort, and Adventure

As much as I hate to admit it, the perfect men’s travel shirt doesn’t exist.  You might find comfortable travel shirts that look good – but those same “perfect travel shirts” may be too delicate to adventure hard in, dry too slowly, and get destroyed when you drop it off at a Southeast Asian laundry kiosk. On the other hand, a shirt may dry quickly and withstand a beating but be a little too ugly to be your only shirt. So what’s the solution?

A List of the Best Men's Travel Shirts - By A Brother Abroad

The solution to the “perfect travel shirt” problem is to strategically pick a few shirts for your travels with a dedicated shirt for looking good, a few shirts for adventuring and wandering hard, and an all-purpose shirt that sits somewhere in between – and I think I’ve mastered this compromise.

Read on to discover my favorite shirts for traveling, adventuring, and still looking good along the way

THE OPTIMAL SHIRT SETUP FOR TRAVEL

If you want your packing list to be ready for anything, pack the following shirts in addition to some travel-ready pants and travel-worthy shoes :

  • One shirt for looking good and going out – a versatile button down shirt, ideally short sleeve oxford that is sweat wicking and wrinkle free or a denim shirt
  • One shirt that doubles as a warmth layer but can be worn anywhere – I’m a fan of lightweight, technical flannel shirts
  • Three or more travel friendly t-shits –a mix of short sleeves, V-necks, and Henleys made of wool, synthetic materials (polyester), or a proven active wear blend to dry quickly and resist funk

If you stick to these three options, you’ll keep your bags light while still being ready for any occasion or adventure.  Read on to discover my favorite options for Men’s travel shirts.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A GREAT TRAVEL SHIRT

Keep in mind that though a shirt might be branded as a great “travel shirt” it still may be over kill (or inadequate) for your travels.  To pick the right travel shirt, that will keep you comfortable, looking good, and smelling good through whatever travels you have in store, think heavily about your destination and consider these points in your potential shirts…

What is the right style for your travels (if any) based on the destination if any?

What materials are best (polyester, wool, or an active wear cotton blend), durability: how hard will your adventures be on these shirts.

  • Versatility: What situations will you need to dress for?

Smell and dirt resistance: How often will you be able to shower and do laundry?

If you’re going to Europe, having a nice short sleeve button down is highly recommended.  If you’re going to Southeast Asia, don’t even think about taking any long sleeve shirts.

If you’re doing the Banana Pancake Trail (Thailandà Laosà Vietnamà Cambodia) and the most you’ll do is a pub crawl, ditch the fancy stuff

My 11 Favorite Travel Shirts to Adventure Hard & Look Good

And if you’re heading to Bali, plan on beachwear and your “nice clothes” being shorts and a nice short sleeve shirt.

In any case, think about the situations you’ll be in and the style required (or not required) to avoid extra clothing.  Here’s a quick cheat list to help

  • Southeast Asia: You’ll be in sandals and shorts the entire time.  No long sleeves.
  • South America: It may get chilly and adventurous, especially if you’re going to Patagonia, so a long sleeve flannel, an “island-ish” short sleeve button down, and plenty of Merino Wool/Quick Dry t-shirts will do you well.  Also, bring a set of nice clothes – as Buenos Aires, Rio, Cusco, and Medellin have some amazing nightlife
  • Europe: You’ll only need one or two “adventurous” pairs of clothes at most (unless you’re trekking).  Dress for the seasons as  winter in Europe is vastly different than summer
  • Middle East: Dress conservatively and plan for the deserts to be hot by day and cold by night. You’ll be surprised how far a wool t-shirt and flannel button-down will take you here.
  • North America: Dress for the seasons and for specific locations.  We’re all across the board in the US and Canadialand.
  • Central America: No long sleeves.  Plan to exist completely in shorts and sandals.

If you can afford it, wool is the most amazing material for shirts .  ( Read about how I decided to wear a wool shirt for a week straight to test the idea).  They resist funk, still keep you warm when wet, and dry quickly.  The only downside is these shirts will breakdown quicker than polyester – especial if you’re using an industrial washer.

Polyester/synthetic shirts are an excellent, cheap option, especially for hard adventuring.  You can purchase them at target for ~$10 or less and they stand up to heavy abuse.  Along the way, they dry quickly and insulate when wet. The downside is they don’t resist funk too well.  Personally, I always hike and travel (by bus, train, and plane) in synthetic shirts because they’re so cheap I don’t care if they get destroyed.  I recommend picking up at least a couple synthetic t-shirts for routine wear in hard conditions.

Cotton: Limit how much of your wardrobe is cotton.  Depending on how often you’re getting wet and how often you wash, cotton can be fine or can be a complete pain.  On the upside, some cotton shirts look good, they’re extremely durable, and they can stand to go a good amount of time between washes in a pinch (denim, not necessarily t-shirts). The only options I consider in cotton are Short sleeve button downs which class up very well, and denim shirts which are super durable, look good, and are a great protect layer for light adventures (like motorbiking in Asia .

The only upside of cotton is that it is much tougher than wool and polyester, with good abrasion resistance and actually gets better with wear.  This is why my denim shirt was my shirt of choice to wear during my motorbike ride through Vietnam , to save a little skin just in case I fell.  All the while, it still looked good enough for the bars.

My 11 Favorite Travel Shirts to Adventure Hard & Look Good

If you’re in Europe and (should be) showering everyday and have laundry nearby, materials and worrying about getting smelly shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

On the other hand, if you’re moving super quickly through humid Southeast Asia or adventuring through South America and can only wash ever week and a half, do yourself a favor and get shirts made of technical materials (wool, polyester, etc.) that wick sweat, resist odor, and do more to keep you dry.

Now that you know what to look for in a travel shirt, let’s take a closer look at your options

THE BEST MEN’S TRAVEL SHIRTS

  • T-Shirts (Wool, Polyester, and active wear blends – timeless, simple, near perfect travel shirts)
  • Technical Flannel Shirts (every traveler should have one)
  • Wrinkle Free Dress Shirts (great for looking good anywhere)
  • Short Sleeve Oxfords (great for looking good anywhere)
  • Denim travel shirts (the “all-arounder” and travel shirt underdog)
  • Hawaiian Shirts (for Beachy Travel)

BEST T-SHIRTS FOR TRAVEL

(wool, polyester, and active wear blends).

As unexciting as it sounds, t-shirts are by far the best travel shirt option. They’ve been around for ages, worn in every activity, and performed well while staying stylish every step of the way.  If you take only one type of shirt traveling, stick to t-shirts.

In terms of style, you can’t go wrong with a well fitting t-shirt.

The small packing foot print of t-shirts makes them easy to pack and wash, lightening your load and making life easier.

My 11 Favorite Travel Shirts to Adventure Hard & Look Good

Some might insist that t-shirts are too boring to wear for a year straight.  I disagree.

To stay looking good (and not get bored), avoid traditional crew neck t-shirts and light V-neck and Henley shirts in dark colors (grey, burgundy, darker blue, black).

For material, invest in at least two wool shirts and grab two cheaper synthetic shirts.

I have been very satisfied with Wooly’s merino wool t-shirts, Bluffworks’ synthetic travel t shirt, Outlier’s insanely great Ultrafine Merino shirt, and a handful of others I’ve tested and highly recommend below.

For active wear synthetic shirts, my go to is actually the Hylete Icon-2 performance Henley, designed as gym wear but looks so great I wear it on nights out. For a Target’s G9 Champion brand shirts which are comparable in quality, function, and style to Lulu Lemon’s men’s line and quite a few of Nike’s pieces, but available for ~$10 to $20 for us budget travelers .

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves…read on for the 17 best travel t-shirts for men, and you’ll definitely find the perfect gear for your upcoming travels.

My Favorite T-Shirts for Travel

1. bluffworks threshold tee.

rei travel shirts

This amazing t-shirt was obsessively designed specifically for travel. If you’re trying to keep your bags light by getting a shirt that you can wear over and over (without washing) in a variety of conditions, the Bluffworks Threshold T is a perfect candidate.

High breathability, great odor resistance, and a feel softer than cotton make this a great shirt to wear. A unique synthetic blend keeps this shirt super light while drying quickly and making hand washes and line drying possible for “one bag” travelers”

2. THE OUTLIER ULTRAFINE MERINO T SHIRT

rei travel shirts

This is insanely soft yet comfortable and durable shirt is absolutely the best wool shirt I have ever owned.

Made of 100% extremely fine Merino wool, this shirt naturally resists odor (I’ve worn the shirt for a week straight to test), dries quickly, and does a wonderful job keeping me cool even in tropical climates.

The construction is top notch, very durable and cut with a just slim enough and stylish fit. With 2 or 3 of these shirts, a traveler could easily wander the world with these as their only shirts.

3. THE HYLETE ICON HENLEY

rei travel shirts

The Hylete Icon 2 Henley is a perfect blend of style and function that fits daily life, adventure, and travel equally. The quad blend performance fabric (that is stretchy, odor resisting, and quick drying) and design are actually intended as hard core exercise that can be worn in everyday life. With the classic Henley stylish three button front, this dresses up nicely with Chinos and a blazer or will simply keep you looking good on long treks.

From the cool highlands of the Himilayas to the warm days and posh night clubs of Bali, this Hylete Henley has been a favorite piece of apparel in my pack and will continue to be. I highly recommend this affordable yet stylish piece of performance gear for your travels

4. WOOLY CLOTHING

My 11 Favorite Travel Shirts to Adventure Hard & Look Good | ABrotherAbroad.com

Woolly Clothing offers great wool clothing direct to you, which means its cheaper than many other options.  I own a few of their shirts (a V-neck and a Henley) and wholeheartedly vouch for the.  Great style.  Great performance

Where to buy: Check out the selection of Woolly Clothing on Amazon

5. C-9 CHAMPION TEES

rei travel shirts

Champion C9 is Target’s in house attempt to compete with active wear giants like Nike and Lulelemon for the men’s athletic wear market.  The result is great gym wear that wears beyond the gym for a great price.  I always load up on a few of these shirts for upcoming travels whenever I’m in the US.

Where to buy: $12.99 at Target

6. H&M ACTIVE WEAR V-NECKS

rei travel shirts

Though these shirts somewhat break my rule of avoiding cotton, the 95% cotton/5% Elastene blend works extremely well.  Not only do these shirts fit well and maintain that fit, they dry much quicker than normal cotton shirts and resist funk pretty well too.  I tested these shirts against high dollar “performance cotton” shirts from other brands (think $60-$80 per shirt) and the H&M slim fit shirts performed much better.

If you’re ever traveling and in a pinch need some shirts anywhere in the world, just drop by an H&M and pick these up.

Where to buy: $24.99 for 3 at H&M Online

7. RIDGE MERINO JOURNEY TEE

rei travel shirts

The Ridge Merino Journey tee is an awesome, travel-ready wool tee-shirt design for durability, hard use, and quick-drying comfort while still fighting funk. This Merino Wool shirt combines 13% nylon into the fabric, making it twice as durable as your average, 100% Merino wool t-shirt. The result is a high performing wool t-shirt that you can abuse for years.

I’ve carried my Ridge Merino Journey tee shirt for just over 2 years of travel and worn it for a week straight without washing, and the anti-microbial nature of the wool keeps me smelling fresh. Hard use of trekking, hand washing, and abrasion from backpacks hasn’t damaged the shirt at all over the two years, proving this is one tough t-shirt

If you’re looking for a single, comfortable t-shirt that looks good and is adventure ready, check out the Ridge Merino Journey t-shirt.

TECHNICAL FLANNEL SHIRTS

A single technical flannel shirt is a priceless addition to the traveler wardrobe.  Wool flannel shirts are great (I have a Pendleton Board Shirt that I love) and there are plenty of other synthetic “technical flannel” shirts combine nylon and polyester to be just as warm, more durable, and are much lighter and easier to pack.

A List of the Best Men's Travel Shirts - By A Brother Abroad

Additionally, the right flannel shirts can add a touch of style if you pick the right one.  My current flannel works in nearly any occasion, and my Uniqlo Oxford Travel shirt works in the rest of those classy sitauations.

I tested Eddie Bauer’s Traveler Flannel Shirt and fell in love (you’ll see pictures all over the site of me in it) and purchased 3 while it was on sale.  Plus, there are several other options for travel ready technical flannel shirts– read on to discover my picks

MY FAVORITE FLANNEL SHIRTS FOR TRAVEL

8. eddie bauer technical flannel.

A List of the Best Men's Travel Shirts - By A Brother Abroad

A flannel shirt crafted perfectly for travelers.  Lightweight polyester and “FreeDry” technology insulates like a jacket when cold but wicks moisture and breathes to keep you cool and dry in the heat.  The fit on this shirt is more classic, giving you room to move make it great for exploring the outdoors and getting active.  The cuff accent colors offer a great touch too.

I’ve toted this shirt around for the last year, love it, and can’t recommend it enough.

9. THE PENDLETON BOARD SHIRT

A List of the Best Men's Travel Shirts - By A Brother Abroad

The Pendleton Board shirt, originally rocked by surfers in the 60’s is a classic that goes anywhere, and being 100% virgin wool is extremely functional too.  It stays warm through the cold and the rain and still breathes in the heat.  I’ve worn mine around more campfires and in more national parks than I can remember – and with good reason.  Better yet, I can wear it right into the city and no one is the wiser.

A timeless shirt that you’ll literally be able to wear forever

10. ICEBREAKER LODGE SHIRT

My 11 Favorite Travel Shirts to Adventure Hard & Look Good | ABrotherAbroad.com

The Merino wool fights odor and stays warm throughout.  Pair with a Merino wool t-shirt for best results

TRAVEL READY DRESS SHIRTS

Most commonly labeled “easy care” and targeting business travelers, these shirts are a perfect “dress up” shirt for travelers.  They are usually sweat wicking, breathable, and wrinkle free but have the cut of a nicer button down Oxford.

Best yet, good options can be had for very cheap through Uniqlo and H&M and even better options can be found through Bluffworks that cost a bit more but are well worth the money.

One of my two current “dress up” shirts is actually a Uniqlo easy care oxford that I wore through the cold season of Europe and then came to Asia, chopped of the sleeves and had it sewn for ~$5, and now wear as my island shirt.  But there are plenty of shirts that you won’t have to chop in order to look good.  Read on for my faves.

11 . WESTERN RISE AIRLIGHT BUTTON DOWN

rei travel shirts

This high tech, travel focused, easy care button down gives you the style of a dress shirt and the durability/easy care you need for travel.

49% Nylon added to the fabric delivers abrasion resistance and easy care properties that make a good shirt to tuck in the bottom of your bag or bring as your only shirt.

Finally, the slim and stylish fit make this shirt perfect for daily wear and long term “one bag” travel just as much as outdoor adventures.

12. UNIQLO EASY CARE DRESS SHIRT

A List of the Best Men's Travel Shirts - By A Brother Abroad

If you’re on a budget and still need to look good during your travels, Uniqlo’s easy care dress shirts are a great option.  The technical materials breathe, wick sweat, and resist wrinkles so you can wear them longer without caring. I wore one of these through Europe and then chopped of the sleeves to make it my casual island shirt…worked like a charm!

Where to buy: $29.90 at Uniqlo.com

13 . BLUFFWORKS MEDIAN TRAVEL SHIRT

A List of the Best Men's Travel Shirts - By A Brother Abroad

A completely “technical” dress shirt, blending 98% polyester and 2% spandex gives the sweat wicking, anti-microbial qualities so you can wear longer, along with wrinkle resisting qualities and freedom of movement so you can stay comfortable along the way.  If you need to “class up” on the road, the Bluffworks Meridian dress shirt is a safe bet.

Where to buy: $98 at Bluffworks

SHORT SLEEVE OXFORD SHIRTS

Though these commonly break the travel rule of “no cotton”, they actually manage to work very well.

My 11 Favorite Travel Shirts to Adventure Hard & Look Good | ABrotherAbroad.com

First, the airflow you get from a button prevents you from sweating all over it and getting it completely nasty

Second, most people only wear button down shirts when lounging, so you get away with washing it infrequently.

Third, these shirts are always quite durable and can actually go a little longer without a wash than your common cotton t-shirt.

Last, these are a classic style staple that can be had for cheap and worn with a bit of versatility.  My go to spot is the Gap – as the shirts always have a classic cut, have a more timeless design (fits just as well in the 1970’s as now and can be worn anywhere in the world), and you can always pay $5 to have the shirt tailored and the fit improved later on.

14. GAP OXFORD SHORT SLEEVE SHIRT

A List of the Best Men's Travel Shirts - By A Brother Abroad

A classic shirt made simply and durably make this another one of my go-to shirts when traveling.  The construction is surprisingly good meaning it will work on hikes and in active situations if you feel like pushing it.  Though this shirt is cotton, it breathes well enough to avoid funk for longer than your active t-shirt.  Beyond the adventures, it looks good enough for most any situation.

Where to buy: Starting at $35 at Gap online

MY FAVORITE DENIM SHIRTS FOR TRAVEL

Denim shirts are the unsung hero of travel shirts.  There is a reason that Levis Strauss made his “can’t bust ‘em” gear for goldmining rough necks out of cotton denim – because it works.  Denim shirts are a great all around travel shirt that sits side by side with the technical flannel.

rei travel shirts

Granted, these denim shirts don’t insulate as well, suck when wet, and take forever to dry, but they look better than flannel and are better if you’re in a situation where you might get thrown around and need an extra layer of skin – like riding a motorbike anywhere in Southeast Asia. Plus, the denim shirt looks good.

A travel tip I got from my buddy “Dr. Strangelove” and his Spanish friends was to actually carry a denim button down on adventures to throw on for nice pics – instead of wearing that sweaty hiking shirt.  That’s actually excellent advice – but I’m a touch too apathetic to execute.

So, if you want a good all-around shirt, that looks good, and you won’t be getting too wet or sweaty, consider the denim shirt.

15. GAP DENIM SHIRTS

A List of the Best Men's Travel Shirts - By A Brother Abroad

Classic cut and fit and constructed well enough to last through your travels.  I have a couple Gap denim shirts that I’ve worn for years and countless countries, and they keep getting better with age.  They’re durable and look good too.

Where to buy: From $40 at Gap

16. THE ORIGINAL: LEVI’S DENIM SHIRT

A List of the Best Men's Travel Shirts - By A Brother Abroad

Levi Strauss did something right with his first couple of creations, cementing “denim” as a style staple.  If you’re going to pick up a denim shirt, you can’t go wrong with the original – Levi’s

Where to buy: Levis.com

HAWAIIAN SHIRTS

Though you wouldn’t expect to see it on this list, if you are venturing to hot or humid climates, Hawaiian shirts are an excellent option.  For one, they’re fun.  People may judge you, but those who don’t will automatically assume you’re fun.

Second, they’re traditional Hawaiian shirts for a reason.  They’re great in the heat and allow just enough breeze while blocking the sun.  They’re also perfect for when you’ve just gotten out of the water.  So, if you’re heading to the islands, consider having some fun and making a Hawaiian shirt your shirt of choice.

Where should you buy these?  Honestly…nowhere in the US.  Buy one on the road as a souvenir.  You can have a custom one made in Southeast Asia for cheap or buy the Balinese version (with real coconut buttons) when you’re in the area.

17. BONUS: THE ONLY JACKET YOU NEED FOR TRAVEL – THE BLUFFWORKS FIELD JACKET

So, you have your perfect travel shirt setup and now need something to layer over it to stay dry, warm, and stylish…what do you choose?

There are literally thousands of options to choose from, between waterproof puffy down jackets, to rainproof shells, but my travels have led me to…exactly one.

The Bluffworks Field Jacket .

This waterproof, windproof take on the classic M-65 military issue field jacket combines the best of style and function that travelers need.

Packing The BEST Travel Clothes For Any Trip – UPDATED 2024

If you close your eyes and try to imagine what a traveler or backpacker looks like, what do you see? Is it a young, pale man dressed head to toe in khaki colored outdoor wear (or geography teacher chic) or is it a sun-kissed, dreadlocked hippy chick in elephant pants and strappy vest? Both of the above? None of the above?

Anyway, for a long time I also had a pretty narrow definition of traveler dress sense and kind of put backpackers into either the badly dressed or the barely dressed category. But, it really doesn’t need to be this way! Backpacker chic and travel clothes can actually be stylish and practical.

Choosing the right clothes to take travelling can actually be pretty tough. You need to make sure you have the right clobber to wear for all occasions but at the same time you want to try and pack as lightly as possible. And of course, more often than that the “normal person” clothes you wear in your day to day life back home simply won’t cut it. To be fair, you would be forgiven for thinking that you need to bear a whole new wardrobe or (at least suitcase) of threads before you hit the road.

Right then, let’s have a look and see if we can find the perfect travel clothes for your next trip!

rei travel shirts

Choosing The Right Travel Clothes

Ok, so, what are the best travel clothes? Well before we give you our list we want to give you some rational first!

There are a few golden rules to finding travel clothes to take on any trip.

The first thing is to try and find items of travel clothing that are versatile and can be worn in a variety of situations. For me, the best traveling clothes are those that perform multiple tasks in one!

Examples of this include the humble vest – it can be worn to the beach in all its glory, it can be worn under a shirt on a night on the tiles, and it can be used as a base layer when things get a bit nippy. Other examples are dark coloured, zip-to-shorts trekking pants – you can wear them to trek, they can *almost* pass for smart, and you can zip them down to shorts and show off your calves. You get the concept right?

rei travel shirts

The next tip is to pay attention to materials and fabrics . You may be forced to wear your items more than you usually would and washing them may be a struggle. Therefore, look for fabrics that are quick drying so you can cheekily wash them in a hurry, and also look for anti-odour technology in case you end up having to wear the same socks for days on end. Anti-crease fabrics that don’t need to be ironed are also pretty useful too.

Look for light, compact items as much as possible. Jeans will only roll up so much but linen pants will squeeze into even a backpacks side pocket. If you need to pack a winter jacket , then consider investing in a specialist item such as Rab Goose Down. They pack in some serious warmth but pack down so that it will even fit inside a daypack – of course, such hi-tech gear does come with a hefty price tag.

All The Travel Clothes You Will Ever Need

Now let’s get down to specifics. Use this post for ideas, inspiration and also a checklist to help you pack for your trip.

It’s worth keeping travel clothes with sustainability in mind, too. You probably already own some of these clothes but others, you may not.

So, let’s get into the action! Well, sort of, before we get into the list of the best travel clothes, let’s have a look at some bags first.

rei travel shirts

REI is one of America’s biggest and most-loved outdoor gear retailers.

Now, for just $30, get a lifetime membership that entitles you to 10% OFF on most items, access to their trade-in scheme and discount rentals .

Nomatic 40L Travel Pack

Firstly, all of these lovely new travel clothes you’re about to buy are gonna need a bag to live inside right? Maybe you already have your luggage sorted but if you don’t, then we recommend checking out the Nomatic Travel Pack.

nomatic backpack black

With the Nomatic, You get loads of space with its roomy 40L interior plus plenty of smart pockets and compartments that let you pack in so much more than you would expect. There are separate compartments for tech accessories, shoes, a water bottle, underwear and socks. Oh, it also comes with a hanging mesh laundry basket to keep your dirty travel clothes away from the rest of your contents.

The team really love these Nomatic bags and have found them to be super comfortable and offer a great amount of room for how compact they feel. The 40l of storage offered them a sweet spot between being able to fit in everything needed for a backpacking trip whilst still being small enough for carry-on travel. They also love the robust material as well as the levels or internal organisation.

If you want to know, you can read our Nomatic Travel Pack review or instead just check it out on the Nomatic site.

Osprey Daylite

Whilst the Nomatic is the ideal luggage option, it is way too big to use as a daypack. The Osprey Daylite on the other hand, is perhaps the perfect daypack. At 18 liters, it’s the perfect size for trips to the beach, city tours or day hikes mixing decent storage capacity with lightness.

Osprey Daylite Plus

There are plenty of internal pockets and pouches designed to hold keys, phones or even cigarettes as well as a quick access side pocket for water bottles. At $65, it’s a bit of a bargain and comes with the Osprey All Mighty Guarantee.

Aesthetically, the daylite is also pretty easy on the eye and can be worn in both outdoor and urban settings.

For the team members wanting a versatile and comfortable bag for everyday use, the Daylite offered the perfect solution. They love that this bag is lightweight, looks cool and offers something that works well for city travel as well as hiking. They also felt it was a great size for packing in day to day essentials without getting too heavy and the panelling on the shoulders and back are great for warm weather conditions.

Kodiak Leather Purse

This one is primarily for the ladies (although no one’s judging anybody here) who want a decent travel purse. Made from lush leather, this beautiful, stylish day purse is another high quality bag from Kodiak who have become one of our favorite brands of late.

rei travel shirts

This purse is ideal to use as an airport bag and will fit your passport and travel documents perfectly. It’s also great to use as a dressed-up bag to take on nights out whether it’s a slap-up meal, cocktails or a full-blown beach party.

Of course, this is not really that useful as a daypack if you’re going hiking or if you have a lot of stuff to carry. However, the trick to successful travel packing is to pack plenty of practical items and a few luxury items for “best” use.

Many of our team love to keep their most valuable items close by, especially when transiting. Having an additional purse means things like passports, wallets and even hard drives and compact cameras can be kept on the body whilst on a night bus or plane ride. They also love that this doubles as a going out back ticking that all-important box of versatility!

When packing travel clothes, our tip is to bring vests, vests and more vests. Vests are such a wonderfully versatile item – you can wear them in all their glory (and show those guns off), “dress them up” by putting an open shirt over them or you simply use them as a base layer in case of cold nights. Oh, and they are ideal for sleeping in!

You can get vests pretty much anyway. Most high-street fashion chains offer vests for around $10 per pop or even x 2 for $12. Or, you can buy nice, pretty ones with art prints or psychedelic designs on them.

I usually make sure I bring at least one specialist outdoor vest made from breathable, quick-drying, odour-resistant fabric too.

What can I say, our team are a sexy bunch and they love to get those guns out! Who can blame them?

You already have t-shirts right? I don’t need to tell you why these are necessary or where to buy them. All I will say is avoid heavy fabrics and avoid t-shirts that are tight otherwise you will sweat your armpits off the very minute you step out of the plane.

Patagonia T shirt

One tip is to bring at least one sports-style t-shirt whether it’s a football (soccer) shirt or a trekking t-shirt. These are useful as they tend to be breathable and quick drying. This one from Patagonia is a great example of one of the best travel tops on the market.

Our team really loves these shirts because firstly, they weigh so much less than traditional cotton t-shirts meaning the save on weight. But they also find that they are much more versatile for backpacking trips as they work well for both time spent exploring a new city and hiking in sweaty conditions. The shirts are also good to use a baselayer with a thicker t-shirt for when extra warmth is required and it’s something our team does often.

I usually travel with 1 or 2 shirts, they are definitely good travel clothes for any type of trip. They are a great versatile item as they can be dressed up or dressed down – you can wear them to go for cocktails or to hit the beach. Ideally, try to choose shirts made from light materials and try to choose shirts that look good both buttoned up, and unbuttoned over a vest – this offers you some variety.

I usually make a point of wearing a shirt whenever I go to the airport or have any kind of encounter with authority; looking presentable just seems to make them look a bit more favourably on you.

Another tip is to pick up at least one technical, breathable, quick-drying shirt as these come in useful for jungle treks.

As we’ve mentioned above, our team are all about versatility and they just love the many varied uses shirts have. They often tend to prefer long sleeve tops for hiking through jungles and other bug-infested environments and when combined with a technical t-shirt above it gives them a mega adaptable clothing set up.

Tactical Pants

Choosing the right legwear to pack for travels can be quite tough. In my normal life, I usually live in jeans and yet they are often just not suitable to take on my travels. Firstly, denim jeans tend to feel a bit sweaty once the temperature passes 20 degrees (Celsius) and then of course, if you wear jeans to go on a hike they can seriously chafe.

rei travel shirts

This is where tactical, trekking pants come in. They are made from breathable fabrics, tend to be a bit looser in the fit and are therefore perfect for wearing in weather climes. The downside is that they can look a bit nerdy and you may end up feeling out of place in cosmopolitan cities. The trick is to shop around until you find a pair that mixes practicality with a style you are happy with.

Bonus points if you can find a pair that zip off into shorts – it’s like a 2 for 1! There are loads of different brands out there making travel and trekking pants but to get you started, check these out from REI.

Zip-offs might not be the sexiest piece of gear, but our team swear by them. Again, versatility is the name of the game and when hiking in jungles full of god knows what, ya’ll want to protect your legs! Then again, at the end of said hike when you end up on the beach and want to soak your beaten feet, zip those bad boys off and enjoy. Boom! Whose sexy now!?

Shorts – Multiple Pairs

For some strange reason I used to be embarrassed to wear shorts which is weird as my hairy legs are a thing of beauty. Anyway, I am over that hang up now and tend to wear shorts most days when I go traveling.

REi Cargo Shorts

I recommend bringing several pairs of shorts with you. If you have space in your luggage, then go for a pair of “beach”/Bermuda shorts, some more stylish denim/chino shorts as well as a pair of tactical/military cargo shorts with loads of pockets – these are great for trekking, cycling and general adventuring.

If you need some advice on choosing the perfect cargo-style shorts, then start with these from REI. They are water resistant, quick drying and have plenty of pockets making them ideal for backpacking and traveling.

Our team love a good pair of shorts it has to be said. Most of us spend a lot of time in hot weather climates so they’re our day-to-day wear. Our team in particular love these cargo shorts because not only are they below the knee (great for temples etc) but they offer increased functionality when it comes to carrying accessories without the need for a bag.

Harem Pants

Perhaps the quintessential backpacker item, you can’t NOT own a pair of harem pants if you are serious about backpacking! These are great to wear on those hot, tropical nights, for lounging around your hostel and yes, for Yoga class.

Bohemian Island Blue Blossom Harem Pants

Yes, they are cool travel clothes. However, my advice is NOT to wear them to the airport, when getting visa extensions or for any other encounter with authority – on these occasions, always make some effort to dress a bit smarter.

You can generally find harem pants everywhere in Thailand, India or Ibiza. Or you can check out this rather delectable pair from One Tribe at Amazon.

Fun fact, every single member of our team who has visited Thailand has been spotted walking down Khao San Road in a pair of these bad boys … even if they deny it!

Looking for a way to keep your pants up and keep your money safe?! Well let me introduce to you the money belt!

Pacsafe belt

Money belts are a traveler’s best friend. They are quite simply belts with a hidden pouch where you can discreetly stash bank notes. Travellers are sometimes the targets of both pickpockets and violent muggers and many a wallet has been lost to the ne’er do wells of backpackistan.

Our team never leaves the house without one of these strapped around their waist! They have really gotten them out of some sticky situations in the past when having a hidden, or most commonly, forgotten about until the point of desperation, 100-dollar bill is a life saver!

Protect your cash by investing in this epic money belt .

Rab Lightweight Down Jacket

No matter where in the world you are going, you will need some kind of jacket. Even if you are headed out to the tropics, it can still get cool at night and seriously frigid if you climb any mountains. At the very least, it will be useful to have a jacket with you when you arrive back home in Seattle/London/Paris on a cold morning.

will hatton working on the laptop with mountain backdrop

The kind of jacket you need will depend on where you are going and when. This Down Jacket by Rab is excellent for fending off cold temperatures. Goose down is like magic and will keep you body warm and cosy even in near freezing temperatures. As such, this jacket is ideal for traveling in spring, autumn or if you are headed to the mountains.

It also packs down to a fraction of its size meaning it will sit quietly in your luggage and hardly take up any room at all.

It does have a hood and offers some water resistance in case of rain. However, if you need a proper, full on rain jacket, check out our next suggestion.

Our team always carry a lightweight and compact down jacket on any backpacking trip, even to Southeast Asia! They swear by this Rab jacket as it seems to hit the sweet spot between offering a good level of warmth, especially when layered, whilst being super packable.

Arc’teryx Beta Lt Jacket

When it rains in the tropics, it really rains. Whether you are traveling around India in monsoon, or simply get unlucky in Ecuador, it usually pays to have a proper, waterproof jacket with you when you hit the road.

rei travel shirts

We have tried a fuck ton of water proof jackets over the years and this is by far the best one we have tried. The Arc’teryx Beta weighs just 300 g / 10.6 oz, making it one of the lightest pieces of performance clothing in your backpack – it packs down to the size of a large grapefruit and definitely weighs less than one. It’s fully waterproof and will withstand a hell of a beating from the rain gods whilst you stay dry.

Arc’teryx gear is also some of the most stylish gear in the outdoor space. It is also, amongst the most expensive gear in the outdoor space too.

Again, the team never leaves the house without a good waterproof jacket and no matter where their trips take them. They’ve tried a bunch of different jackets out over the years but feel the quality of the Arc’teryx Beta combined with its unbeatable weight makes it a winner for backpacking.

Converse All Stars

Choosing the right footwear to pack for your travels is not always straightforward. Shoes are kind of a bulky item in your luggage so you want to bring as few pairs as possible but you also need footwear for a whole number of situations. Whilst many backpackers tend to spend a lot of time wearing flip-flops (thongs) these are most definitely not appropriate for all occasions.

rei travel shirts

Converse All Stars, are a bit of a multi-tool kind of footwear. You can wear them for a night on the town and you can do moderate difficulty treks with them. Because they are made from light canvas material, they are breathable enough to wear even in tropical climes so your feet won’t get too sweaty.

Whether you go for the hi-tops or the regular pump style is a matter of preference – both are good.

Our team love Converse in particular because the canvas upper of the shoe is easily folded over so it takes up hardly any room in their bags. They also like that converse can be worn for everyday travelling but can also look decent enough for a night out too.

Salomon X Ultra 3 Low Aero Shoes

If you intend on doing some proper trekking or heading to the mountains, then you need to think about bringing some proper technical footwear. Walking boots are (literally) made for walking but they are not always ideal for backpacking as they are big and chunky and can eat up precious room in your luggage.

Salomon Women's X Ultra 2

Fortunately, these Saloman X walking and hiking shoes offer much of the support and protection of walking boots but are a bit smaller and lighter meaning they will snuggle nicely in your backpack.

For the team they always try to travel with a good pair of walking shoes (not boots) on their trips. This means that they are always prepared should they want to go on a hike. They love the Saloman X in particular as they are light and comfortable to wear walking around a city day to day too and don’t make their backpacks too heavy.

Sandals or OluKai ‘Ohana Flip-Flops

Sandals and flip flops are the preferred travel footwear of many backpackers. They are cheap, airy and easy to kick off when you hit the beach making them the obvious choice for many. They also slot into backpacks very easily taking up hardly any space whatsoever.

OluKai Upena Sandals

However, thongs are not suitable for all occasions. Remember that they offer no protection for your feet and many travelers have stubbed or broken their toes on uneven pavements whilst wearing them. Also, if you wear thongs to ride a motorbike or scooter, please be extra careful where you put your feet.

If you’re wanting a good mix between lightweight and durable, we would suggest you check out Vivobarefoot’s line of boots and shoes . They do a great job of freeing up your feet and being relatively breathable, so if you’re not too keen on sandals, they might be a good option for you.

My advice is to bring a good pair of shoes or sneakers and wear flip-flops only for the beach. You can find flip flops pretty much everywhere but if you want a good pair that won’t fall to pieces after a week, then check out this pair by Olu’kai.

Standard flip flops might be the backpacker sandal of choice, but our team prefer the extra support these offer with their cross-over strapping and adjustable back. It means that if they’re out and about and the terrain does turn a little more challenging, then they can simply summon their inner mountain goat and crack on!

Laundry Wash Bag

Scrubba

At some point your travel clothes will get smelly and dirty. When this happens, try to avoid storing them with your clean clothes as the odours will spread. The solution is simple enough, pack a travel laundry bag – you throw your dirty stuff in it and when it’s full, you take it to the laundry.

You may even want to consider buying a travel wash bag – a water tight, rubber laundry bag which you use to actually wash your clothes inside simply by adding detergent and shaking it about. Obviously the standard of washing you get isn’t the same as what you get from a machine, but it is quick, cheap and very ecological.

Over the years we have sampled many laundry bags and wash bags and this one by Scrubba has become our favourite.

Scrubba Wash Bag

It might seem like a simple enough thing, but you’d be surprised how many laundry bags our team have been through before settling on this one! Others on the market rip easily, get stinky themselves or leak their stank right through their porous material! This bag on the other hand not only solves those issues but offers a great place to actually wash your undies too!

Odour Resistant Underwear

Never leave home without good travel underwear . Socks and underpants are the foundations upon which all empires are built and I suggest bringing at least one full week’s supply of underwear with you.

rei travel shirts

When you’re traveling, underwear tends to get seriously sweaty and you may even sometimes be forced to live in it for days on end. To countenance the sheer griminess, bag yourself some breathable, odour-resistant underwear.

Now we’re talking! The team are big fans of these keks and they wouldn’t go anywhere without them! So, next time you look at a picture of one of us… well, use your imagination! Once they switched from plain old cotton to these technical undies, they’ve never looked back!

Sunglasses by Abaco

So yes Sunglasses can be picked up for a couple of dollars on pretty much every roadside in Southeast Asia. However, these are almost always low-quality items that offer no protection from the sun, can actually cause eyesight problems and more often than not will break within a week or so.

Abaco Polarized Sunglasses

Instead, we suggest picking up a pair of lovely travel sunglasses by Abaco Polarized. They offer proper UV protection , are reliably built and they look stylish as hell.

The team felt these glasses hit the right balance between being stylish, protective and not overly expensive too. They are also super durable too which for our clumsy gang is a real bonus!

Now, you  could spend a fat chunk of $$$ on the WRONG present for someone. Wrong size hiking boots, wrong fit backpack, wrong shape sleeping bag… As any adventurer will tell you, gear is a personal choice.

So give the adventurer in your life the gift of convenience: buy them an REI Co-op gift card!  REI is The Broke Backpacker’s retailer of choice for ALL things outdoors, and an REI gift card is the perfect present you can buy from them. And then you won’t have to keep the receipt. 😉

How We Tested The Best Travel Clothes

There is no perfect or exact science when it comes to testing out travel and outdoor gear. When it comes to the best travel clothes, however, we’ve got heaps of experience over the years with various different bits of gear on various trips.

Of course, the best clothing for travel is a subjective matter, but we’ve tried a lot of shiz out, so we think we’re well equipt to give you a few pointers! In terms of testing, we were sure to give each item a proper test drive and pay close attention to things like seam stitching, quality of materials, breathability, weight, packability, comfort, fit and of course style!

We also looked at how well each piece of gear fulfils its primary purpose. For example, so if we’re testing out a waterproof jacket, then we’re going to be rating it on how well it keeps out the rain! You get the idea! Finally, we looked at the cost of each item. More expensive gear was treated more harshly than cheaper items that were given a few more passes.

One of the most important things you need for a good hike is clothing that fits well, feels good, and is appropriate for the climate and weather in which you're hiking. You might get away with apparel that’s not ideal during a 45-minute workout. But on a five- or six-hour hike? It could be less than fun if your shirt is rubbing in all the wrong spots, feels scratchy, or needs to be adjusted constantly. Finding a great go-to hiking shirt will make apparel a nonissue—so you can focus 100 percent of your energy on enjoying the trek.

We tested more than a dozen hiking shirts in various environments, during both active and casual pursuits, making note of their fit, style, fabric, and layering potential.

  • What to Look For

Why Trust TripSavvy

Best overall, patagonia capilene cool trail shirt.

Lightweight material

Versatile, attractive fit

Sweat-wicking

Blocks smells

There’s a lot we love about this T-shirt. Thanks to the scoop neck, roomy sleeves, and drop-tail hem, the cut is very flattering, which all make for a perfectly comfy T-shirt that lays nicely on our body and feels equally as appropriate on the trail and out at lunch. The fabric is very airy and breathable, so it’s perfect on a warmer-weather hike when you want just a thin layer on top of your skin.

A silver-salt-based additive reduces odor in the fabric, and we found that we could wear this shirt multiple times without it smelling offensive. As you’d expect from Patagonia, this shirt is made of at least 50 percent recycled fabric and made with Fair Trade and Bluesign practices—meaning it’s good for the workers creating it and the environment. Find the men’s version here .

Note: Our male tester did find the sizing ran a bit small. Our tip is to size up one past your standard size.

Sizes: XS to XXL | Fit: Regular | Fabric: Polyester | Planet and Social Impact: Fair Trade Certified sewing, recycled materials, meets Bluesign certification

Best Budget

Rei co-op sahara t-shirt.

Smooth texture

Excellent price-to-quality ratio

Nothing, really

Don't be fooled by the "best budget" superlative. This is a damn-good shirt that performed as well as the Capilene Cool. At least one of our testers liked it even better. And if you haven't taken REI's house brand seriously, it's time to start. The Co-op makes some of our favorite outdoor gear products, and the Sahara shirt further legitimizes the brand.

We were taken aback at how soft and comfy this shirt is and how high-performing it was on the trails—both hiking and running. Mainly polyester, with a bit of spandex, makes this shirt stretchy and quick-drying. It's not quite as good at blocking stink as some of the merino wool options on this list, but a microbial treatment helps. It's rated at UPF 30. And, since it's our budget pick, we suggest loading up on a few of the seven colors offered.

Sizes: S to XXXL | Fit: Regular | Fabric: Polyester and spandex | Planet and Social Impact: Not listed

Best Splurge

Ibex 24-hour scoop neck tee.

Comfortable material

Keeps smells at bay

Pricier option

One of the downsides of 100 percent merino wool clothing is it can stretch out. But not this shirt from Ibex. Despite being made completely out of the naturally sweat-wicking and odor-resistant material, this T-shirt has a bit of stretch. We found it doesn’t stretch out throughout the day, despite containing no nylon or spandex.

The fit is flattering, thanks to the normal fit and scoop neck. An additional technology in the fabric gives it a slightly cool touch, which helps keep you from feeling too warm. We’ve worn this shirt on its own and also as a base layer underneath a fleece and outer shell, and really love how flat it lays. It doesn’t rub, the fabric dries quickly, and it can handle a few wears before it needs to be washed—making it a great choice for long trips and hiking on vacation when you might not have any other option than to re-wear your clothes a few times. Get the men’s version here .

Best Sun Protection for Men

Black diamond alpenglow hoody.

Black Diamond

High level sun-blocking

Good at blocking odor

Absolutely nothing, which is kind of annoying

We keep thinking we'll find something we don't like about the Alpenglow Hoody. Or that we'll find a sun shirt we like better. No dice. This shirt is simply that good. We've been testing it for about half a year now, which has included hundreds of miles of running, hiking, backpacking, and biking. It's included fly fishing, date nights, pool parties, bouldering, Zoom calls, and probably other things we're forgetting. Almost all the testing happened in Southern California and Colorado, where we all know the sun loves to show itself. And we still love this hoody.

Black Diamond uses UPF 50+ and a proprietary cooling technology called BD.cool to make this shirt super comfy and protective in many settings. And it employs polygiene odor control, which does a surprisingly good job of masking stink. Underarm gussets boost a full range of motion, which is usually good for outdoor pursuits.

Sizes: S to XL | Fit: Regular | Fabric: Polyester and elastane | Planet and Social Impact: Not listed

Best Sun Protection for Women

Prana sol protect top.

Smooth fabric

Lightweight

UPF 50+

Fashionable accents

No smell control properties

This shirt is one out of a handful in prAna’s Sol Protect line—which, you guessed it, has high UPF ratings to keep your skin protected on sunny outdoor adventures. While that’s a pretty standout feature, we also need to mention how stinkin’ soft and comfortable this long-sleeve is. Like, buttery soft. This makes it a top you’ll want to wear on hikes, in everyday life, and even at the beach or other sunny outdoor spots when you might need to throw on a little cover-up after your skin has reached its limit.

It also works equally well by itself or as a layer over a tank top or short-sleeved shirt, thanks to roomy sleeves. The snaps on the side of each hem are an excellent bonus style detail. The only downside? This shirt isn't odor-resistant.

Sizes: XS to XL | Fit: Regular | Fabric: Recycled polyester, TENCEL lyocell, elastane | Planet and Social Impact: Uses 85 percent recycled polyester

Best Lightweight

Outdoor research echo hoodie.

Outdoor Research

Airy fabric

Finger holes

Hiking on a hot and sunny day (think: Utah or Arizona) presents a few challenges. You want to be cool and comfortable, but you also want to protect your skin from the blazing sun. This hoodie lets you do it all. It’s shockingly thin and lightweight. It honestly barely feels like you have a shirt on. But you do, and it has sun protection built into it. There’s even a ponytail hole to slip the hood on and protect your head. We also found that the material is extremely good at wicking away sweat, so we never felt like we were sitting in a wet shirt even after working up a sweat. Available in sizes 1X-3X here . Find the men’s version here .

Sizes: XXS to XL | Fit: Regular | Fabric: Polyester | Planet and Social Impact: Made with 100 percent recycled materials

Best Merino Wool

Minus33 woolverino wool raglan t-shirt.

Super soft and comfy

Great thermal regulation

It's spendy

New Hampshire-based Minus33 has been making some of our favorite merino wool threads since 2001. And we love the Raglan tee for many reasons. This is a do-everything workhorse shirt that performs well hiking, trail running, at the gym, on a plane, or rock climbing . We'll pack this on almost every trip because its lightweight style compresses very small, and it can be worn multiple days without stink. Plus, it can work as a base layer or a standalone shirt.

Minus33 employs a core-spun technology to create its proprietary Woolverino fabric. Not to get too in the weeds, but it's a nylon core wrapped in an outer sheath of merino wool and a touch of spandex. The result is a highly functional and high-performing garment that works in many climates and activities. It also naturally has a UPF 20 rating. Now, this shirt is expensive. But if you're looking for a solid shirt that should last a long time, this is it.

Sizes: S to XXXL | Fit: Athletic—size up if you don't want it skin-tight | Fabric: Merino wool, nylon, and spandex | Planet and Social Impact: Not listed

Best Fleece

Eddie bauer super sevens fleece pullover hoodie.

Comfortable

Solid thermal regulation

Lightness of material makes us question durability

The recently launched Eddie Bauer Super Sevens Pullover Fleece Hoodie has quickly become one of our favorite versatile pieces of outdoor gear. Part of the Super Sevens Kit, the hoodie is incredibly lightweight and packs down into its own pocket, making it suitable for travel or stuffing into your backpack for an extra layer. The PrimaLoft fabric does an excellent job of trapping heat, but because it is so thin, it doesn't seem to overheat much. The fleece is part of Eddie Bauer's First Ascent line, focused on high-octane outdoor pursuits.

We've taken this pullover fleece on many hikes, fly fishing, traveling, and stand-up paddleboarding. It performs well in those activities and looks good enough to wear to a restaurant or a Zoom call.

Sizes: S to XXL | Fit: Athletic | Fabric: Recycled polyester, polyester, and nylon | Planet and Social Impact: Made with some recycled polyester

Best Base Layer

Black diamond rhythm tee.

Just the right amount of elasticity

Minimal seams

Naturally odor-resistant

Holds a lot of static electricity

As someone who doesn’t typically love form-fitting T-shirts, our tester was surprised to love how this slim-fit option from Black Diamond looked and felt. It’s made with unique merino wool that’s lighter and dries quicker than the standard material and is combined with just enough nylon to make it comfortably stretchy. The seams give it a little more shape than your average boxy tee, so it’s actually quite flattering for a technical shirt.

At just 69 grams, it’s the lightest of the merino wool shirts on this list—making it an excellent choice for backpacking, running, or any other activity where every bit of weight really matters. Find the men’s version here .

Sizes: XS to XL | Fit: Slim | Fabric: Merino wool and nylon | Planet and Social Impact: Not listed

Best Style for Women

Vuori pose fitted tee.

  • Material 5 /5
  • Opaqueness 3.9 /5
  • Durability 5 /5

Flattering cut

Great neutral color options

Not odor-resistant

We love Vuori’s activewear because it perfectly melds style, comfort, and performance. This ribbed T-shirt is excellent for anyone looking for a hiking top that’s heavy on the style but still has enough performance features to make it a legit option among a crowd of technical tops.

The slightly cropped hem (hits just above the hip) and ribbed fabric are very on-trend and, honestly, so comfy. It pairs well with any high-waisted hiking pants if that’s your style (it sure is ours!). We typically prefers oversized and long hems, so we was surprised at how good we felt wearing this top. It did a pretty good job of wicking sweat, too—the parts that got a little sweaty didn’t stay that way for long. This might just be our new go-to when it comes to trail-to-bar tops.

Sizes: XS to XL | Fit: Slim | Fabric: Modal rayon and elastane | Planet and Social Impact: Not listed

The Patagonia Capilene Cool Trail Shirt edges out the competition thanks to its flattering cut, superior breathability, and surprisingly low price point. It may be budget-friendly, but the REI Co-op Sahara T-Shirt performed extremely well, keeping our tester dry and comfortable and providing UPF 30 protection.

Patagonia Capilene Cool Merino Graphic Shirt : This is a solid trail-to-town shirt that our testers liked a lot. Capilene Cool is an extension of Patagonia's famous Capilene base layer fabric focused on hot summer days. This is a good pick for those primarily hiking or living in hot temperatures. We had some issues with it shrinking after washing and drying, so our pro-tip is to size up a level, hang dry, or both.

Eddie Bauer Resolution Short Sleeve : If we had a runner-up for the best budget category, that's where we'd slate this one. There wasn't anything we didn't like about this shirt. We just liked the REI Sahara shirt a bit better. Eddie Bauer uses its proprietary FreeDry moisture-wicking material and some odor-control tech. It's a relatively classic regular fit that our testers enjoyed.

Merrell Tencel Tee : Like the Patagonia and Eddie Bauer shirts above, we really liked this shirt. We just didn't have a superlative category for it. But it's a solid shirt that's a bit heavier. It's rated for UPF 20+, is water- and sweat-resistant, and has a four-way stretch, making this one of the comfier shirts we tested.

When selecting products for this roundup, we tapped into our knowledge, experience, and expertise of brands and shirts. We also conducted some internet research to find the most popular—and highly rated—hiking shirts on sites like REI, Backcountry, and Amazon. We've owned some of these shirts for years; others we got specifically to test for this article. We wanted to include products that fit various people, outdoor pursuits, and price ranges when narrowing the list.

All of the shirts included in this roundup were tested hiking, running, doing other high-output outdoor activities, lounging around the house, and running errands. We considered the fit and style of the shirts. We tested for odor-blocking and moisture-wicking. We tested the shirts as stand-alone options and baselayers underneath hardshell and softshell outers . All told, we logged hundreds of miles running, hiking, backpacking, skiing, paddle boarding, and walking the dog in these shirts. Testing was conducted primarily in the Northeast and Southern California, with stops in the Colorado Rockies and Midwest.

What to Look For in a Hiking Shirt

The fabric makes the shirt. (See what we did there?) Look for a hiking shirt constructed of breathable material with sweat-wicking capabilities (meaning it dries fast) and odor-resistant technology. Sun protection in the form of UPF is also a great addition. Flat seams or seamless fabric can also go a long way in preventing uncomfortable rubbing and chafing. Merino wool is naturally quick-drying and odor-resistant—and not scratchy like other non-merino wools—but synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon can also get the job done.

If you’re hiking in colder weather, you want to make sure your hiking shirt can layer with whatever you need to add on top to stay comfortable. It’s good to wear merino wool as the first layer since it’s soft and insulating yet breathable so that it won’t get stifling hot under a fleece and heavier outer layer. You may also prefer a thinner synthetic fabric as your first layer. It all depends on what fits underneath your outer layers and what feels most comfortable for you. Quick-drying fabric is always a must.

Style & Fit

Again, a good hiking shirt is all about its fabric. You want to find a soft, breathable, fast-drying, and odor-resistant shirt. Extra fabric features include sun protection (UPF 50+ is excellent while a UPF rating of 30 to 49 is good ), offset seams to prevent chafing from your daypack , and bug-repellent capabilities. Merino wool is a standard option that is exceptionally soft, but if you're looking for something cheaper, polyester and nylon are great options. Your type of fabric will largely depend on your hiking conditions, budget, and preference.

That said, hiking shirts come in various styles such as short-sleeve, long-sleeve, button-up, and more. Short sleeves are great for hikes in warmer weather and can be a great base layer when layering for colder climates. Long-sleeve offers extra protection from the sun and getting scratched by debris on a trail. Button-up shirts are great for temperature control and layering, as you can unbutton them when you get cold or throw them over another shirt if you're trying to keep warm.

Aside from finding a hiking shirt that will work across multiple seasons, a great hiking shirt will be versatile for different activities. You can wear them running, working out, on fishing trips, or on family vacations, and some of the more stylish options look great when you're eating out on vacation.

Most hiking shirts and clothes are durable and resilient. However, the material may dictate how you should wash and care for the shirt. So always read the tag or care instructions on the brand’s website before washing. You can toss most hiking shirts in a washing machine but may want to avoid fragranced detergent and fabric softener, which could interfere with the shirt's ability to soak up any moisture or sweat.

Many synthetic fabrics and merino wools may need to be line-dried to avoid shrinking the material or causing pilling. It may be a pain, but we always hang dry our technical hiking and outdoor gear in general. Always read the label before throwing your hiking shirts in the dryer.

There's nothing worse than taking your shirts out of the washing machine or dryer and smelling sweat. Don't wait to wash your shirts to prevent a buildup of unpleasant odor. Once you're off the trail, toss your gear into the washing machine. You can also invest in laundry detergent formulated for sports or a mild odor-eliminating product. Be sure to check the shirt's tags or the retailer's website to ensure that the detergent or odor eliminator is compatible with the shirt's material.

The most significant benefit of a hiking-specific shirt is that it’s made to wick away moisture and dry quickly. This moisture management will ensure you’re comfortable on a long hike and reduce the rubbing of your clothing and uncomfortable chafing. That being said, you don’t necessarily need a shirt that’s marketed for hiking specifically.

Athletic shirts meant to be worn for different types of workouts can be easily used as hiking shirts. It all comes down to picking the right material and a comfortable fit. Odor resistance helps a lot, too, especially if you plan to sweat in the shirt a few times before you get a chance to wash it.

Amy Marturana Winderl has tested and reviewed outdoor gear for nearly a decade. She once spent a year traveling the US in a camper and visiting National Parks from Ohio to Washington state and everywhere in between. She’s hiked in every climate, from the humid mountains of the Adirondacks to the desert floor of Bryce Canyon, and has many preferences for her clothing and gear. She has been contributing to TripSavvy since 2021.

Nathan Allen , TripSavvy's outdoor gear editor, also contributed to the research and testing for this roundup. He is a lifelong hiker and is quite particular about the clothing he uses for outdoor activities—especially those that last a long time or are high-output. He is fortunate enough to live next to an extensive trail system in Southern California and runs and hikes on them every day year-round.

When it comes to packing for warm-weather travels, a bikini and sunglasses may be at the top of your list. Don’t forget the humble T-shirt, though — when the sun is shining, these everyday essentials form the lynchpin of many outfits whether you’re dressing for city sightseeing or a laid-back day at the beach.

Oversized tees, cropped tees, tees with pockets and tees with plackets, technical workout tees and tees that are very much a fashion statement… There are many different types to choose from in fabrics ranging from butter-soft modal to hard-wearing, breathable cotton. To make your selection easier, we’ve researched our favorite travel T-shirts for women across a wide range of unique categories.

Best Overall

Aday essentialist t-shirt.

This is a quality shirt that prioritizes comfort and sustainability while also offering some unique design features.

It’s not a budget option, so buying more than one color quickly becomes expensive.

If you believe in spending money on quality items that will stand the test of time, you’ll love the Aday Essentialist T-shirt. It’s made from super-soft, plant-based modal that’s as durable as it is lightweight. This fabric is ideal for travel since it dries quickly and breathes well whether you’re on your third flight of the day or exploring tropical beaches and jungles at your destination. It’s also good for the planet. The modal is sourced from sustainable forests, is OEKO-TEX certified, and made with up to 20 times less water than cotton in a zero-waste factory.

Ethics aside, this is a shirt that serves as a wardrobe staple while simultaneously making a subtle fashion statement. It’s deliberately oversized for maximum freedom of movement with a fairly high crew neck. This modest look is offset by high side splits and the visual interest of a hi-low hem that’s shorter in the front than the back. We love the intrigue this adds to your ‘fit when worn as is, and also that it makes it easier to tuck into jeans or skirts without adding too much bulk to your waistline.

Finally, this conveniently machine washable T-shirt comes in a range of colors, from classic shades like coconut (white) and black to limited edition terracotta and mist (gray).

The Details: XS to XL | 90 percent Tencel modal, 10 percent elastane

Buck Mason Slub Easy Crew

Made from textured cotton slub, this shirt offers durability and a timeless, goes-with-everything look.

Color choices are all fairly subdued, so those with a passion for brighter shades will need to look elsewhere.

The Buck Mason Slub Easy Crew is all about understated quality. Designed for a classic fit with short sleeves, a crew neck, and a straight hem, it’s meant as a staple piece for everyday use. It goes with everything from shorts to leggings and can be worn on its own or as a layer in colder weather. We love the lightweight, breathable cotton slub fabric. With its textured feel, it gives off vintage vibes and is renowned for its sustainable manufacturing process.

Slub is also up to the challenge of frequent use, meaning you can wear it over and over again on your travels without it showing signs of wear. This allows you to pack less and leave more room in your suitcase for souvenirs. Refreshing the T-shirt is easy too — just throw it in the washer on cold and tumble dry on low. It has been garment dyed and pre-washed with softener for that irresistible lived-in feel and comes in a range of neutral shades from dark navy to faded black.

The Details: XS to XXL | 100 percent cotton slub

Best V-neck

Tommy bahama kauai jersey t-shirt.

Tommy Bahama

This shirt comes in a range of gorgeous colors to suit all tastes, from the neutral to the brightly tropical.

The fit is deliberately generous, so size down if you prefer a more fitted look.

We love a V-neck for framing jewelry, showcasing necklines, and elongating the torso. The Kauai Jersey T-shirt from Tommy Bahama is a quality pick made from a modal and polyester blend with a touch of spandex for the perfect balance of softness and stretch. It’s meant for tropical getaways and summer vacations, with a relaxed fit that leaves plenty of room for airflow and keeps movement unrestricted.

Rolled sleeve cuffs cut at an angle add interest to an otherwise plain design. We also like that the T-shirt comes in a full choice of solid and heathered colors to suit every kind of trip, from classic black and silver streak heather to Caribbean-ready tango red or paradise pink. And, because nobody has time for hand washing on vacation, the T-shirt is machine washable and tumble dry safe as long as you use the appropriate settings.

The Details: XXS to XL | 67 percent Tencel modal, 28 percent polyester, 5 percent spandex

Best Square Neck

Old navy fitted rib-knit t-shirt.

This T-shirt achieves sexy comfort with an exaggerated neckline and super-soft fabric.

Some may find the neck opening a little too wide.

With its generous square neck, short sleeves, and figure-hugging cut, the Old Navy Fitted Rib-knit T-shirt offers a sexier alternative to the standard crew neck. It’s designed to hit below the waist for a flattering, elongated silhouette and is reassuringly opaque. We love the cotton-spandex blend for its softness and for the fact that it clings everywhere you want it to and nowhere that you don’t.

It’s shaping without being too tight, and stretches impressively to accommodate larger chests. No matter your body shape, you’ll be able to find the right fit with inclusive sizes ranging from XS to 4X in regular, tall, and petite cuts. Color choices are equally versatile, whether you’re a bold cherry tomato or a delicate cashmere blue kind of girl. Best of all, this shirt is so well priced that if you’re stuck between two shades, you can probably justify getting both.

The Details: XS to 4X | 96 percent cotton, 4 percent spandex

Best Scoop Neck

Everlane the supima micro-rib scoop-neck tee.

Long-staple Supima cotton is the secret behind this figure-hugging tee’s superior strength and softness.

The fabric is relatively thin, so it’s a better bet for warm climates than as a layer for chilly ones.

This micro-rib tee from Everlane effortlessly accentuates your curves with its sweeping scoop neck. The effect is juxtaposed by the shirt’s extra-length sleeves, which hit just above the elbow for an elevated look that’s simultaneously sensual and sophisticated. We also appreciate the raised central seam running down the back of the shirt to help to lengthen the look of your torso.

The shirt is made from fine-ribbed Supima cotton with extra-long fibers for added durability and color retention — meaning that this tee should stand the test of time (and travel). A touch of elastane makes for a snug fit throughout that shapes without being restrictive. In terms of color, choose effortlessly stylish neutrals such as heather tan and Kalamata (olive) or opt for eye-catching jewel tones like bellwether blue.

The Details: XXS to XXL | 96 percent Supima cotton, 4 percent elastane

Best Henley

Gap modern rib henley t-shirt.

This shirt’s slim fit and buttoned placket make it a versatile choice that can be dressed up or down to suit the occasion.

The white color is not completely opaque, so careful bra choice is required if you don’t want it to be visible.

The Gap Modern Rib Henley T-shirt pairs a crew neck with a buttoned placket that you can wear unbuttoned for a more casual look, or fastened for smarter occasions. This versatility is ideal for travel, helping to reduce the number of items you need to pack. We love the shirt’s short, fitted sleeves and the fact that it’s slim without being too snug. The cotton-modal blend includes a small percentage of elastane, allowing it to stretch to fit in all the right places.

It’s also soft, comfortable, and lightweight enough to keep you cool whether you’re touring the sights of a sticky summer city or working up a sweat on the trail. Because it’s machine washable, keeping it clean on the go is easy, too. Color choices are fairly limited but include wardrobe staples such as optic white, dried moss green, black, and our favorite, a powdery bicoastal blue.

The Details: XXS to XXL | 58 percent cotton, 38 percent modal, 4 percent elastane

Best Oversized

Madewell garment-dyed oversized pocket tee.

Everything about this T-shirt is effortless, from its oversized fit to the garment-dyed comfort of its fabric.

Stick to your regular size for the oversized look.

The Madewell Garment-dyed Oversized Pocket Tee is intentionally roomy, with minimalist, unisex styling from its dropped shoulders to the functional patch pocket on the left breast. It looks great as is, or with a simple front tuck into the waistband of your favorite jeans.

It’s made from weighty cotton jersey that has been garment-dyed for that pre-loved, broken-in feel right out of the box. We love the fabric’s soft comfort and the way it drapes flatteringly without clinging anywhere. Even the eyelet white colorway is fully opaque. Other options include vintage-looking old mahogany, weathered concrete, and black coal. The shirt is machine washable for on-the-go convenience.

The Details: XXS to XXL | 100 percent cotton

Best Cropped

Lululemon cates cropped t-shirt.

This shirt’s fabric combines the softness and durability of Pima cotton with the athletic stretch of Lycra.

Colors are all neutral or pastel with no options for making a bolder statement.

If you’re headed somewhere warm and want maximum airflow, treat yourself to the Lululemon Cates Cropped T-shirt. Designed to hit just above waist-height, it’s not indecently short. You could wear it with a high-rise skirt or pants and keep the amount of skin on display to a minimum. But, if you want to show off your hard work in the gym, pairing it with regular- or low-rise bottoms will result in tastefully displaying your midsection.

The fabric offers all the lightweight breathability and luxurious softness of Pima cotton. It’s also naturally durable thanks to the long-staple fibers, with added Lycra for flexibility and shape retention. Four-way stretch means full mobility, making this an equally good choice for low-impact workouts and post-gym relaxation. Machine washable and dryer safe, the shirt comes in a range of soft colors ranging from white to Belgian blue or strawberry milkshake.

The Details: 0 to 14 | Pima cotton, Lycra

Best Breathable

Athleta breezy scoop v tee.

This shirt is crafted from ultra-light fabric and manages to be both loose enough for breathability and fitted enough to flatter.

Some of the lighter colorways are not fully opaque.

The Athleta Breezy Scoop V Tee is especially designed for travel, vacations, and exploring the outdoors. We love it for high heat and humidity destinations where breathability is key. It’s made from a super lightweight modal-polyester blend, with a fit that drapes beautifully while offering plenty of ventilation. The subtle texture of the fabric feels good against bare skin, while the dropped hem at the back provides full bum coverage.

The shirt scores sustainability points too, since the modal is harvested from responsibly managed and certified forests. And (because warm weather means more frequent washing), you’ll be pleased to hear that it’s both machine washable and dryer safe. No access to a dryer? No problem, the fabric is light enough that it’ll dry quickly over a pool railing or balcony. Colors are diverse and range from statement shades (iceplant pink) to soft pastels (honeysuckle yellow.)

The Details: XXS to 3X | Tencel modal, polyester

Best Athleisure

Athleta momentum seamless tee.

Targeted ventilation panels and UPF 40+ sun protection make this the ideal shirt for outdoor workouts.

The fit runs a little small so if you’re between sizes, consider sizing up.

If you like to stay active on your travels, check out the Athleta Momentum Seamless Tee for one that’s specifically intended for medium- to high-impact workouts. It’s made from lightweight, breathable, quick-drying nylon, with ventilation panels in strategic areas including up the sides, under the chest, and in between the shoulder blades. Grippers at the inner hem prevent the shirt from riding up, while seamless construction equals zero chafing.

The fit is meant to be close for unimpeded freedom of movement; however, if you prefer a slightly more relaxed look, you can always size up. We also love that this shirt is as well-suited to outdoor workouts (Think: beach yoga and stand-up paddling) as it is to indoor gym sessions, with a UPF 40+ rating to protect you from the sun’s harmful rays. Colorways cater to every taste with a rainbow of solid, striped, heathered, and gradient shades.

The Details: XXS to 3X | 100 percent nylon (solid colors), 65 percent nylon, 35 percent recycled nylon (heathered colors)

Best Size-inclusive

Skims soft smoothing seamless t-shirt.

Available in a full range of sizes, this shirt is lightly compressive for a snug, stretchy fit that stays perfectly in place.

Care instructions (hand wash, line dry) aren’t particularly travel-friendly.

The Skims Soft Smoothing Seamless T-shirt comes in a full range of sizes from XXS to 4X and flatters all body types with its crew neck, short sleeves, and top-of-the-hip length that pairs well with everything from flowy skirts to workout gear. We love the light compression and subtle smoothing effect offered by the nylon-spandex fabric; and the fact that it stretches easily to accommodate larger chests and arms without becoming see-through.

The fabric also hugs your curves and stays securely in place — no irritating riding or rolling up here. It’s butter soft, too, making this shirt as well suited to lounging at your villa or Airbnb as it is to wearing out or layering under other clothing. Classic shades include onyx, cocoa, and marble. If you prefer a more colorful look, keep an eye out for limited edition choices such as bright, attention-grabbing fuschia.

The Details: XXS to 4X | 93 percent nylon, 7 percent spandex

Best Sustainable

Patagonia women’s capilene cool lightweight shirt.

Sustainable fabrics and an ethical manufacturing process make this shirt a win for you and the planet.

Colors are limited, with just three options currently available.

When it comes to sustainability, Patagonia leads the way with its 1% for the Planet pledge, sustainable materials, and ethical working conditions. The Capilene Cool Lightweight Shirt is no exception, being made from at least 52 percent recycled nylon in a Fair Trade Certified factory. It’s the brand’s lightest technical top, designed for active adventure-seekers in cool to hot climates. We love its versatility and think it works just as well as a casual tee or a layering item.

The T-shirt features a moderate scoop neck and drop tail hem for added style points, as well as a slim fit that flatters your figure while still leaving enough room for ventilation. Overheating is unlikely given the built-in side vents; but if you do break a sweat, no worries. The shirt wicks moisture, dries quickly, and employs HeiQ Mint odor control to keep things fresh. Colors include Sienna clay, subtidal blue, and a smolder blue that’s closer to gray.

The Details: XS to XL | Partially or fully recycled nylon

Tips for Buying Travel T-shirts

Prioritize versatility.

Whether you’re traveling by plane, car, or train, you’ll probably have a limit to how much you can bring on vacation. When picking a travel T-shirt, choose one that can fulfill several different functions and therefore save space on your packing list. For example, look for athleisure shirts that offer all the technical specs required for a successful workout while still looking stylish enough for trips to the beach or out for coffee. When choosing everyday tees, we love versatile fabrics and neutral colors that are easy to mix and match with the rest of your wardrobe. Look for details such as a Henley button-down placket or a sexy scoop neck that allow a shirt to be dressed up or down to suit several different scenarios.

Know the pros and cons of different materials

Travel T-shirts are everyday items that need to be as comfortable and practical as possible. We recommend prioritizing materials like cotton and modal that are both lightweight and naturally breathable, helping to keep you cool in warm weather. If you’re planning active adventures or like to workout on vacation, then nylon and polyester are the best bet for sweat-wicking, quick-drying comfort. Often, both casual and athleisure tees will contain a percentage of elastane (sometimes called spandex or Lycra). This provides stretch for freedom of movement and a figure-hugging fit. Finally, nobody wants to waste precious vacation time ironing or hand washing their clothes. Look for wrinkle-resistant fabrics that can be machine washed and dried.

One of the best ways to fold a T-shirt for travel is to lay it out, face up. Next, fold the shirt lengthways into thirds by bringing the outer edges in toward the middle, making sure that the sleeves are folded back onto their respective third. When you have a long, neat rectangle in front of you, roll the shirt tightly into a cylinder shape. This packing style not only saves a considerable amount of space, but it also prevents shirts from creasing too much while in transit.

There’s no strict rule for the number of T-shirts you should pack for a trip, since the answer depends on variable factors including the weather, your planned activities, and access to laundry facilities. However, a general rule of thumb is that you should pack four tops for a week-long trip. If you’re headed somewhere warm, you may want all of these to be T-shirts; or you may want a combination of tanks, tees, and long-sleeve shirts. For longer vacations you may want to pack a few more, but plan on using a laundry service to refresh your wardrobe periodically rather than packing enough fresh outfits to last for the duration of your trip.

Why Trust Travel + Leisure

Jessica Macdonald has been writing about travel gear and clothing for more than a decade. She’s put her fair share of T-shirts to the test while living in warm and humid climates including North Carolina, South Africa, and Southeast Asia. She chose the category winners above by comparing the prices, features, and customer reviews of more than 30 popular T-shirt brands.

OEE Luggage Cubes: Best bulk set

This option gives you a cube for every part of your luggage. You get three clothing bags, one underwear bag, one shoe bag, and one toiletry bag. The set uses durable nylon material with YKK zippers. Thanks to the breathable materials, they’re lightweight and resist odors. They come in a variety of colors and are great for many different types of activities. The webbed handles are comfortable and allow you to carry any one of them alone.

Gonex Compression Set: Most modern option

With ripstop nylon and an ultra-modern design, this set compresses clothing down to save space and prevent overpacking. They use ripstop nylon to prevent punctures and tears, while heavy-duty zippers gently squeeze the air from between clothing to maximize your packing space. A generous handle makes them comfortable to carry. The set includes five different sizes and a shoe bag. Everything you have gets organized and you reduce the shifting that causes wrinkles as your luggage travels with you. If you’re taking a trip abroad , this is the perfect set to take with you.

Bagsmart 6 Piece Set: Best hardshell set

If you need more protection for your things, this hardshell set helps. You’ll have three different sizes with reinforced zippers, and a wireframe holds its shape even in long-distance travel. The mesh exterior is breathable to cut down on odors, and the sizes fit together in a standard-sized suitcase. You get one large, three medium, and two small cubes. They’re made to fit exactly, so there’s no wasted space in your suitcase. With careful organization, your clothing will arrive with fewer wrinkles thanks to reduced shifting during transit.

Below, we’ve answered some common questions that many people have about packing cubes.

How useful are packing cubes?

You can waste a lot of space trying to toss clothing into a suitcase without any type of organization system. Cubes give your packing some direction and potentially give you more packing space as you arrange your clothing and accessories. A great set of packing cubes makes packing so much easier. They’re straightforward and ensure your clothing never tumbles out of your suitcase again. Use them to keep space to a minimum and maximize what you can take with you on your next big trip. These on the list are durable and easy to use, and you’ll wonder what you ever did without them.

Do packing cubes wrinkle clothes?

Packing cubes help protect your clothing and ensure your packing space is maximized throughout your suitcase. Does your suitcase wrinkle clothes? Cubes will avoid wrinkling them as badly. Packing cubes can help reduce the amount of movement your clothes experience. Rolling your clothing inside the cubes will further reduce wrinkles and keep clothing in place.

How do you roll clothes for packing cubes?

Rolling is the best technique to maximize space in your packing cubes. Here are a couple of methods for different garments.

Military roll (or burrito roll)

This method works well for T-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, pajamas, and even pants.

  • Lay the garment flat.
  • For shirts, fold the sleeves inward. You can also fold in a small section from the sides if your cube is narrow.
  • Imagine you’re wrapping a burrito. Start rolling tightly from the bottom hem towards the collar.
  • Once rolled, tuck the rolled end into the shirt to secure it.

Rolling pants

  • Lay your pants flat with the legs aligned.
  • Pinch the inseams together at the crotch.
  • Fold one leg over the other, aligning the seams.
  • Starting at the ankles, roll up tightly toward the waistband.
  • You can tuck the rolled end into the cuff of the pants for a compact fit.

The airline industry has evolved to accommodate a diverse range of traveler preferences and budgets, offering various fare classes to meet the different needs of passengers. Travelers will encounter two of the most popular options: main cabin and basic economy. Understanding the differences between main cabin and basic economy is essential for making informed decisions when booking flights. Although these two fare classes may seem alike, they have a few differences that can make a big impact on your travel experience.

Main cabin vs basic economy: the basics When it comes to the actual seats, there is typically no difference between the two fare classes. The main difference is the cost of the tickets. Basic economy is offered by airlines to provide a budget-friendly option for travelers seeking lower-cost airfare. The fare class often features a reduced ticket price in exchange for fewer amenities and increased restrictions.

Take a deep breath and dive beneath the surface, and an entirely different atmosphere swallows you up. All kinds of colorful fish, colonies of polyps that make up dwindling reefs, stingrays, and, if you're lucky, sea turtles or even whales might come into view. While snorkeling is sometimes overlooked for recreational scuba diving, this relatively tame activity can be so much more exciting than you expect.

In some destinations, such as Grand Cayman, you can even take WaveRunners from snorkel site to snorkel site. Regardless of the destination, feeling the sun on your back while you float and swim through cool water is just the beginning.

Spring and summer will be here before we know it, and it inspires us to plan a road trip and revel in the alluring beauty of nature. Thankfully, you needn’t look far, as every state in the country offers a great road trip route. There are obvious choices like Florida’s Overseas Highway and Hawaii’s Road to Hana, but the country offers many lesser-known – though just as stunning – scenic drives. Excited? Pack your road trip gear and essentials, gas up your road trip car, and map out a memorable cross-country adventure with these best U.S. road trip routes.

Seward Highway Alaska Despite its unfortunate name, Seward Highway is like a Chili’s appetizer sampler platter of everything that makes Alaska's breathtaking landscape famous. The two-hour drive between Anchorage and the seaside village of Seward includes shoreline views in Turnagain Arm, looks at the jagged peaks of Chugach Mountains, and a dip into the Kenai Peninsula. The latter is famous for sea kayaking, glacier hiking, rafting, fishing, and a host of outdoor activities.

The TikTok-Famous Pipersong Meditation Chair Is Not a Miracle Cure for Uncomfortable Office Chairs

A person sitting in the Pipersong Meditation Chair at their desk.

Sit still. Stop fidgeting. Focus on your work. If only it were that easy.

If you’ve been shifting in your seat your whole life, traditional office chairs can feel like torture devices. But ADHD-Tok has a proposed solution: the Pipersong Meditation Chair , a sort of stool (with a backrest and footrest) that influencers claim is a miracle cure, providing flexibility to alternative sitters.

Intrigued, I tested the Pipersong chair to see whether it was an improvement for keyboard jockeys, who might feel restricted by the narrow seats, armrests, and high backs of traditional office chairs.

Rebranding a meditation chair as a work chair

A front view of the Pipersong Meditation Chair which includes a rotating footrest.

For years, people have been trying to improve the way we work. And there’s been a line of devices—like kneeling chairs, standing desks , treadmill desks, and balance balls—designed to get people out of the traditional office chair .

“In the early- to mid-2010s, the messaging became ‘sitting is the new smoking,’ and people started freaking out,” Jenny Zhao, a board-certified ergonomist, said in a phone interview. “Popular media interpreted that as sitting is altogether bad and standing is altogether good.”

Zhao told me that’s when standing desks came into fashion. They are fine in the short term, she said, but “the simple truth is that any prolonged position without moving is not good for the human body.”

The Pipersong Meditation Chair is designed to allow you to shift and move positions all day. A Pipersong representative told me via email that it was originally designed for meditation, hence the name. “The designer herself is a meditation lover and always sitting cross-legged. That’s where the name came from. But nowadays on social media, people also call it a cross-legged chair or ADHD chair, since you can sit on it in dozens of ways and change your sitting position every now and then,” they said.

This is an armless chair, with a small seat and a mid-back backrest. The lower platform section, which spins 360 degrees around the chair, can be used as a footstool; it can also be swung behind the chair. So you can use the Pipersong as a traditional desk chair, or you can bring the footstool in front and sit with your legs in a variety of positions, including criss-crossed, like a frog, or with one leg up.

This chair started gaining traction on social media in late 2022, and influencers have posted videos of themselves spinning in the chair, arms raised in victory. The company itself makes very few claims on its website, but it does repost influencer videos to its social media accounts; the company representative told me they were not sponsored. “We do not sponsor posts on social media. However, we offer a limited number of chair samples for experience firsthand. Some online shares may originate from these samples, while most others are spontaneous posts from satisfied buyers,” the representative said.

Zhao said she hasn’t used the chair herself. But after being prompted with questions by her followers, she posted on TikTok about it. She said as an ergonomist she doesn’t think it’s ideal to find one alternative position and stick with it. Instead, Zhao said she’d love to see a “healthy mix of proper back support interspersed with all of the postures.”

The Pipersong chair options

There are three versions of the Pipersong Meditation Chair : the Regular, the Pro, and the Plus.

The Pipersong Regular can accommodate up to 200 pounds, and the Pro and Plus chairs hold up to 250 pounds. The Regular version has a circular seat that’s 14.7 inches in diameter, while the two other versions have an oblong seat that’s about 3 inches wider and an inch shallower. (You can compare the details with a handy chart on the site.)

The models usually range in price from $350 to $470. For comparison, the budget pick from our guide to office chairs—the HON Ignition 2.0 , with a 300-pound capacity—usually costs around $425. The Herman Miller Sayl Chair , an also-great pick, is my daily desk chair. About double the price of the Pipersong chair, it accommodates people up to 350 pounds and comes with a 12-year warranty.

Pipersong sent me a white version of the Pro (which I did not keep after testing , per Wirecutter’s policy, since the Pipersong rep told me I did not need to return it to the company).

Ivory is not a color I would have chosen myself, due to my general clumsiness and a penchant for eating at my desk, but any dirt and grime wipes away from the faux leather fairly easily.

The Pipersong chair is also available in black, gray, beige, and pink (depending on the model), and I’m a bit surprised that something that comes in such staid colors could catch the eye of influencers. Yet this chair’s unique design is apparently enough to send them into a tailspin.

What the influencers think

As I scrolled the #pipersongmeditationchair hashtag on Instagram and TikTok, I saw a lot of videos created just after someone got the chair, but I didn’t see many videos from months later. Curious about whether anyone continued to love their chair after the honeymoon phase, I reached out to a couple of creators to check in, and only one responded.

Artist and writer Allison Jones Hunt has two disabilities, hip dysplasia and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, both of which make sitting for long periods challenging. In 2021, she looked into a kneeling chair before she saw the Pipersong chair and thought it could help take the pressure off of her hips. She reached out to the company and requested a collaboration, and Pipersong sent her the original-model chair free of charge. She said she was not paid to post her Instagram reel about the chair, and she doesn’t make money off of her recommendation.

Three years later, Hunt still uses the chair and loves it. “I can sit in the chair in front of the easel for hours—often four to five hours at a time—and I shift in it all the time, especially as a kneeling chair or in the position with the lower level platform in front of me and one or both feet up on the platform,” she said via email.

I am really grateful for Hunt’s perspective, since the chair didn’t work for me at all.

The chair left me with zero chill

In my usual office chair, I often sit with one leg tucked under the other, with my untucked foot resting on the base of the chair or on an under-desk footrest . Other times I have both legs down, the balls of my feet resting on the base of the chair. And sometimes I try to squeeze cross-legged into my desk chair, but this often ends up feeling too tight and constricted.

It is really difficult to sit in this thing like you would in a normal office chair. And that’s the point, but it’s also the problem. From the moment my butt touched the seat, I felt discombobulated. The chair rolls easily, and the footrest swings freely, so it takes a moment to get oriented.

Even with the wider seat of the Pro, it is narrow, and it made me feel imbalanced in a way that required me to shift my weight to my legs. (For reference, the seat on my Sayl chair is roughly 3 inches wider.)

The backrest cradled my lower back nicely, but it left my upper back feeling unsupported. The meditation aspect is clear in that you need a strong core and to be able to sit up straight without full back support. Similarly, the lack of armrests means there’s nowhere to lean if you need to. I ended up hunching forward, elbows on the top of my desk, which was the opposite of a posture improvement. And though the seat raises and lowers, the footrest doesn’t. So there isn’t a lot of flexibility if you need to adjust for your desk height and optimal personal comfort.

In the first couple of hours of using the chair, I shifted frequently, trying to find the correct position. It was very uncomfortable for me, so I checked the website for other positions that might be better … and really only the criss-cross position was tolerable for me, in limited bursts. But I was able to sit in it for only 5 to 10 minutes at a time before I had to stand up and walk away.

I mostly sat in a criss-cross position, but my normal position, with a foot tucked under my thigh, was actually harder in this chair. Using this chair made my body feel fatigued, and I was crankier than usual in meetings (which is really saying something).

What my neighbors and coworkers had to say

The Pipersong Meditation Chair wedged between the the legs of a table-style desk.

I was curious about whether others would feel the same way, so I offered a two-day trial to any of my neighbors, dropping the chair on their porches like a reverse thief. I purposefully didn’t tell them my own feelings about the chair. And their feedback was nearly identical to my experience: The chair is intriguing, but the seat is too narrow; there’s not enough back support; and sitting in the chair backwards felt good only for about 10 minutes.

One of my neighbors, Alexandra Snape-Rogers, liked it the first day she tried it, but by day two she found herself slouching and uncomfortable. “I feel like it is a few adjustments away from being worth the money it costs. Or it’s priced wrong. At $200 I could justify trying to learn to sit in it, and if ultimately it wasn’t comfortable, I wouldn’t feel horrible for spending that amount and giving up on it. At over $400, it’s a no for me for now,” she said.

My ad hoc testing panel also pointed out that to even incorporate the chair into your home office, you need to have the right desk equipment, a table-style desk. In my home office, I have our top-pick Uplift V2 Standing Desk , which allows the chair’s footrest to slide under freely, keeping me at the right distance from my monitor and keyboard.

However, I have a compact IKEA Micke desk in my living room, where I pay bills and do other household paperwork. The opening for a desk chair is roughly 26 inches by 24 inches. So it’s impossible for this chair’s footrest to fit. And then it’s very awkward to work from because I have to lean too far forward to reach the desk.

Lisa Fischer, Wirecutter’s senior audience development strategist for social video, also came to my house to take a video of me sitting in the chair, and she spent about half a workday at my desk with the chair. Lisa was the person who originally pitched the idea for this story, and she had almost bought one. “I ultimately feel like this is a promising concept with less-than-satisfactory execution. Certain positions were great at first, but it wasn’t supportive enough to stay comfortable for more than 15 minutes at a time. I’m really glad you saved me the money,” she said at the end of the day.

Why this viral chair won’t be included in our guide to office chairs

A front view of the PUKAMI Armless Office Desk Chair whose wide seat accommodates criss-cross sitting.

We’ve been testing office chairs since 2015, and we’ve logged thousands of hours of initial and long-term testing. In our guide to office chairs , we aim for ergonomic choices and focus on eight categories: comfort, lumbar and back support, ease of reclining, adjustability, durability of materials, price, warranty, and appearance.

“The Pipersong and other alternative chairs would never make it into our testing pool because armrests and full back support are part of our ergo criteria,” senior staff writer Melanie Pinola said.

The chair is made in China, by a company based in Hong Kong, and right now it is a single-product company. That isn’t inherently bad for a manufactured product, but larger companies will often have a deeper history of and background in design and manufacturing.

Pipersong has some fairly strict rules on returns and warranties. The chair arrives unassembled, though it’s fairly straightforward to put together. However, it must be unboxed within three days of arrival so you can inspect for any damage, such as “scratches, cuts or stains.” The Pipersong representative told me that the company will often extend that window. “We understand that circumstances may vary, and we strive to accommodate our customers accordingly,” the rep said. The company’s 30-day return policy starts at the date of delivery, and the company provides a one-year warranty. We haven’t tested its return policy, and interactions with customer service appear to be mixed, based on various Amazon reviews .

By contrast, our office-chair picks are all manufactured by well-known companies. And they come with at least a five-year warranty, covering pretty much anything that breaks; the best office-chair companies exceed that, offering 10- or 12-year warranties. “Companies like Steelcase, Herman Miller, and Hon have a long history of designing and making office furniture, although we’re always open to testing products from less-famous brands,” Melanie said.

Still interested?

Overall, we don’t recommend the Pipersong chair for most people.

Based on all of the in-person testing feedback I got, as well as the online comments I read, it feels like a Goldilocks situation: You have to be “just right” in terms of height, weight, and physical needs for the Pipersong chair to work for you. And it can be a great solution for someone who fits into that. So if you still think this chair may be the right solution for you, just be cognizant of the restrictions around the company’s damage and return policy before you order it.

Wirecutter also purchased an armless, wide-seated criss-cross chair , which I tested alongside the Pipersong chair. At less than $100, the criss-cross chair is significantly less expensive than the Pipersong chair. The one I got doesn’t sit on casters; I liked that because it didn’t roll away from me, and once I put it in place, it stayed in place. There are versions that come with casters, or they can be added later, if you need. I still wouldn’t recommend this model as your only desk chair, since it also has a fairly low back. Yet it could be used as one of several options, so you could shift and move, depending on the task. I loved sitting in this chair during meetings where I was expected to look attentive and engaged but didn’t really need to participate.

If you’re someone who likes to sit cross-legged, but you don’t want a criss-cross chair per se, look for a chair with a wide, deep seat and armrests that can be extended outward, away from your body.

Melanie recently tested the Staples Driscott chair, which earned a spot in our office chair guide’s other good chairs section . It’s about the same price as the Pipersong chair, and it can accommodate people up to 400 pounds. “The seat is much roomier than any of the other chairs we’ve tested, which makes it great for occasionally sitting cross-legged or semi-cross-legged in,” she said.

Whether you think the Pipersong chair will help you or not, the overall takeaway is this: You have to be aware of your body’s needs during the workday. That’s been a big change for me.
