AI, Your Side Hustle Hero to Make Money from Home

Think AI is just for super-smart scientists? Nope! There are tons of ways you can use AI to make some serious cash from home.

Ready to turn your tech-love into a side hustle? Here are some amazing ideas:

1. The Content Creation Powerhouse

Ai, your writing buddy.

Imagine having a writing assistant that never gets tired, bored, or has writer’s block! AI tools like Jasper and Rytr help you crank out blog posts, website copy, product descriptions, and even creative stuff like poems or short stories.

You can write paid articles for websites or companies, or use AI to make your own online business shine with tons of fresh content. AI can even help you find ideas and make sure your writing is on point!

Pics in a Flash

Ever wish you could draw anything you imagine? AI image generators like DALL-E and Midjourney let you do just that!

Just type in what you want to see – like “a cat flying a spaceship” or “a watercolor landscape of a hidden waterfall” – and the AI will create it.

You can sell your images on stock photo sites, use them to make your blog posts stand out, or turn them into cool digital art pieces you can sell online.

Movie Magician

AI can help you become the next editing superstar! Services can cut and paste video clips, add background music, and even turn your dialogue into subtitles for different languages.

Imagine helping YouTubers make their videos snappier, or editing short videos for businesses– it’s a skill you could even be paid for!

2. AI Expert Services

The global chat champ.

If you know another language (or more!), AI translation tools become your BFFs. Instead of taking forever on translations, AI does the basic work, and you fine-tune it for accuracy and style.

Get gigs translating websites so they reach worldwide markets, translating important documents, or even adding subtitles so movies and videos can be enjoyed by everyone!

Meet Your Robot Assistant

Businesses want to offer help 24/7, but that’s impossible for humans! That’s where chatbots come in.

Platforms like Dialogflow let you “train” little AI assistants to answer common questions, take orders, or gather information from potential customers even when everyone’s asleep.

It’s like coding and customer service rolled into one cool job.

Data Detective

AI is amazing at spotting patterns way too huge for humans to see alone. You can offer services by using AI to analyze mountains of social media chatter to see what people really think about products or brands.

Investors might pay you to use AI to spot stock market trends. Businesses might want you to use AI to track their rivals and see what sneaky plans they might be hatching!

3. Affiliate Marketing with a Techy Twist

Ai reviewer: the ultimate comparison tool.

Imagine being able to gather tons of information on different products in a flash! That’s what AI lets you do. Let’s say you want to review the best robot vacuums.

AI tools can help you scrape customer reviews, compare features across different brands, and even summarize the pros and cons. You write awesome reviews, include your special affiliate links, and whenever someone clicks your link and buys, you earn cash.

It’s like being a super-helpful shopping guide and getting paid for it!

Super-Niche Websites: Your Secret Weapon

Sometimes the biggest money isn’t in the broadest topics, but the super-focused ones. Imagine a website not about pets, but all about the cutest outfits for teacup poodles! AI tools help you find these “micro-niches” – topics huge groups of people are obsessed with but might have fewer websites dedicated to them.

Once you’ve picked your niche, AI can help with everything else. It can find keywords that help people find your site, suggest tons of article ideas, and even help you write some of the content.

AI can also help you find products related to your niche to promote with affiliate links, making your awesome website into a money-making machine.

4. Build Your AI Empire

Tool time: coding for cash.

If you have some coding skills, you can build super-useful, bite-sized AI tools that people will happily pay for. Think of common problems people have: resizing a ton of images is a pain, long articles can be a drag to read, and catching every single grammar error is tough.

You could build simple tools that offer AI-powered solutions – a quick image resizer, an article summarizer, or an extra-smart grammar checker. Sell these tools on online marketplaces, and suddenly you’re not just using AI, you’re selling it!

Plugin Power: Supercharge Popular Programs

Do you know your way around popular software like Photoshop, Excel, or even game design programs? You can become a plugin superstar! Create little add-ons that use AI to do cool new things.

Maybe your plugin adds AI filters to Photoshop, or teaches Excel to predict future patterns based on the data. Find platforms that allow developers to sell plugins for their software, and your creations could make you money while helping others work smarter.

AI Business Sensei: The Ultimate Consultant

If you get really good with AI, and understand how businesses work, you could make serious money as a consultant. Companies often have no idea how to start using AI to their advantage.

You could be the expert that helps them! Teach them how AI can find them new customers, help them analyze huge amounts of data to make better decisions, or even automate some parts of their business to save them time and money.

As AI gets more important, companies will be desperate for consultants like you!

Things to Remember:

Humans still needed: the ai hype is real, but….

AI is a powerful tool, but it’s still just that – a tool. It can mess up, make stuff that’s just plain weird, or even be used for harmful things if we’re not careful. That’s where you come in!

Your job is to double-check AI’s work, make sure it sounds natural and makes sense, add your own creative spark, and be the one to make sure the AI is doing good, not harm.

Find Your Thing: Be the Specialist

Trying to be an expert in everything AI-related is a recipe for a headache. Instead, become known as THE person for something specific.

Are you the best AI product reviewer for tech gadgets? The go-to person for building customer service chatbots? The genius who finds hidden stock market patterns using AI?

Specializing makes it easier for clients to find you and know exactly what you can do for them.

Never Stop Learning: The AI Train Keeps Rolling

AI technology changes at lightning speed! New tools, techniques, and updates are happening all the time. To stay ahead of the game, you’ve got to be curious and willing to learn.

Subscribe to tech newsletters, mess around with new AI programs as they come out, and take online courses. The more you know about cutting-edge AI, the more valuable your skills become!

Step 3 – Complete your report.

It doesn’t get much simpler than that. However, you know that your site visit report will be complex in comparison. We thought sharing six essential tips for a successful site visit process would be of use to aid you in your quest. And without further ado, here are the tips to use with your Site Visit Reports Templates.

6 Essential Tips For Site Visiting and Reporting Success

  • Get Tooled Up

One of the best things you can do pre-inspection is to ensure you have the best tools to aid you in your site visit reporting. Now, you could easily download and print the Site Visit Reports Template we’ve provided here; or you could look at using a fully digital solution.

At the very least, you or your appointed reporting staff will likely carry a smartphone with them. Using a digital solution, you can use this device we all carry regardless for the reporting process itself. With digital solutions like what you’re going to find with 1st Incident Reporting’s mobile and customizable app, you can do a lot more than fill out a report on your phone or tablet. We’ll get more to that later.

  • Plan It Out

One of the most essential lessons to learn in business management is that appropriate planning saves time, money, and headaches. Preventing disaster is wise by having a well-thought-out plan of attack for your site visit inspection and subsequent reporting.

Break down your site visit into notable segments, and you’ll find you can quickly investigate a segment at a time, then cross it off your list. Segmentation for inspections tends to allow for a more straightforward determination of process faults at the micro-level rather than the macro. It’s also a great way to formulate your plan to complete the site visit efficiently and effectively.

  • Watch The Weather

If your operations or those of the site you or your reporter will attend are outside, watching the weather might be as crucial as it would on a day run to take the family to the beach. The weather might play an even more critical role if the site visit itself will hamper outdoor operations.

Similarly, if you are in Canada or one of the Northern United States, where harsh winters are an annual reality, accounting for weather in your plans is something every intelligent manager will do.

  • Communicate Intent

Depending on the nature of your site visit, it’s typically a wise and polite idea to communicate your intent to perform a site inspection. It’s essential when you’re looking at a sudden shutdown of operations to accommodate for reporting staff to perform their site visit.

Whether you’re letting the team lead for building materials coordination know or the foundation construction foreman, communicating your intent to perform a site visit is a professional way to move forward. It’s also a great way to build up the people around you by including them instead of excluding them. ( source )

  • Coordinate With Teams

You need to coordinate with relevant teams rather than just communicating that you’ll have an on-site inspection site visit completed on a particular date and time. It’s one thing to drop an email or a phone call to let someone know; it’s another thing to invite their active support.

When you coordinate with teams on-site for your site visit, you communicate a powerful message – that teams are stronger when they work together. Consider the ramifications of an unannounced site visit. Staff would be paranoid, on edge, and looking over their shoulder. Although you might increase specific workforce metrics by instilling a culture of fear, you likely won’t get anyone’s best work.

The moral of this short thought was that it usually pays more significant dividends to work with people than against them.

In order to look at things from another perspective, there are cases where you need to communicate your intent to do a site visit for your own safety. Here’s an interesting fact: In 2019, 33% of worker fatalities in road construction sites involved a commercial motor vehicle. There were 250 such deaths that year. ( source )

Sometimes coordinating to shut down a busy vehicular area to allow pedestrian inspectors or management to do a site visit is for everyone’s best interest and safety.

  • Don’t Be Afraid

Okay, we aren’t saying you’re a child in a dark room at night during a thunderstorm, not at all. This last tip is perhaps the most essential tip of all because it challenges you to step outside your comfort zone. When we say don’t be afraid, we mean don’t be afraid to ask for help.

The best leaders are those who recognize the limitations of not only the team but of themselves. In placing limitations on our workloads, we limit stress from pushing us to a breaking point.

Given the complexity of many construction projects and other projects that might incur a need for regular site visits and reports, it’s obvious why some companies utilize entire teams for their site and project management.

Never feel afraid to ask for the help of another professional. Managing big projects isn’t easy. It’s okay to ask someone for assistance to help you complete a big or prolonged site visit.

Next Steps: Digitizing Your Site Visit

Okay, so you’ve got your template printed and ready to go, a viable solution to documenting a site visit report. However, would it be easier to carry a tablet you could complete the report on directly, including photos or even video? Or perhaps customizing a report to include a checklist you can check off right on your smartphone as you walk around the site?

With a digital, mobile solution, you have the freedom to come and go into the report as you please. And when the report is complete, the custom notifications can let the right people know the report is complete and ready for sharing.

Automated processes take the guesswork out of remembering to hand in a report. They allow management to immediately take action rather than wait to see a paper report to determine what happened.

Like the 1st Reporting app, a digital solution allows for instant collaboration, so if you need to have one, two, or even several other staff assist in a group site visit, each could contribute on their own device.

Saving you time and money while offering you a secure platform for customizable site reporting is the name of the game here. Find out how turning your site visit reports templates digital can move your business forward.

How to Write a Visit Report

Last Updated: March 30, 2024 References

This article was co-authored by Madison Boehm . Madison Boehm is a Business Advisor and the Co-Founder of Jaxson Maximus, a men’s salon and custom clothiers based in southern Florida. Whether you’re a student or a professional, a visit report helps you document the procedures and processes at an industrial or corporate location. These reports are fairly straightforward. Describe the site first and explain what you did while you were there. If required, reflect on what you learned during your visit. No additional research or information is needed.

Writing a Visit Report

Explain the site's purpose, operations, and what happened during the visit. Identify the site's strengths and weaknesses, along with your recommendations for improvement. Include relevant photos or diagrams to supplement your report.

Describing the Site

Step 1 Look over the requirements of your visit report.

  • Reports are usually only 2-3 pages long, but in some cases, these reports may be much longer.
  • In some cases, you may be asked to give recommendations or opinions about the site. In other cases, you will be asked only to describe the site.
  • Ask your boss or instructor for models of other visit reports. If you can't get a model, look up samples online.

Step 2 Start the paper with general information about the visit.

  • If you visited a factory, explain what it is producing and what equipment it uses.
  • If you visited a construction site, describe what is being constructed and how far along the construction is. You should also describe the terrain of the site and the layout.
  • If you’re visiting a business, describe what the business does. State which department or part of the business you visited.
  • If you’re visiting a school, identify which grades they teach. Note how many students attend the school. Name the teachers whose classes you observed.

Step 4 Explain what happened during the visit in chronological order.

  • Who did you talk to? What did they tell you?
  • What did you see at the site?
  • What events took place? Did you attend a seminar, Q&A session, or interview?
  • Did you see any demonstrations of equipment or techniques?

Step 5 Summarize the operations at the site.

  • For example, at a car factory, describe whether the cars are made by robots or humans. Describe each step of the assembly line.
  • If you're visiting a business, talk about different departments within the business. Describe their corporate structure and identify what programs they use to conduct their business.

Reflecting on Your Visit

Step 1 Describe what you learned at the site if you’re a student.

  • Is there something you didn’t realize before that you learned while at the site?
  • Who at the site provided helpful information?
  • What was your favorite part of the visit and why?

Step 2 Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the site.

  • For example, you might state that the factory uses the latest technology but point out that employees need more training to work with the new equipment.
  • If there was anything important left out of the visit, state what it was. For example, maybe you were hoping to see the main factory floor or to talk to the manager.

Step 3 Provide recommendations for improvement if required.

  • Tailor your recommendations to the organization or institution that owns the site. What is practical and reasonable for them to do to improve their site?
  • Be specific. Don’t just say they need to improve infrastructure. State what type of equipment they need or give advice on how to improve employee morale.

Formatting Your Report

Step 1 Add a title page to the beginning of your report.

  • If you are following a certain style guideline, like APA or Chicago style, make sure to format the title page according to the rules of the handbook.

Step 2 Write in clear and objective language.

  • Don’t just say “the visit was interesting” or “I was bored.” Be specific when describing what you learned or saw.

Step 3 Include any relevant pictures if desired.

About This Article

Madison Boehm

To write a visit report, start by including a general introduction that tells your audience where and when you visited, who your contact was, and how you got there. Once you have the introduction written out, take 1 to 2 paragraphs to describe the purpose of the site you visited, including details like the size and layout. If you visited a business, talk about what the business does and describe any specific departments you went to. Then, summarize what happened during your visit in chronological order. Make sure to include people you met and what they told you. Toward the end of your report, reflect on your visit by identifying any strengths and weaknesses in how the site operates and provide any recommendations for improvement. 18+ site visit report templates.

There may come a time when you are tasked with visiting a particular industrial site to assess and gather as much information as you can regarding its operation, architecture, procedure, observation, management, safety, engineering, property, and current state. Construction Site Housekeeping: Keeping Work Areas Safe

Construction sites are dynamic environments with numerous potential hazards. Proper housekeeping is essential for maintaining a safe and efficient work area. This practice goes beyond cleanliness; it systematically organizes materials, tools, and equipment to eliminate trip hazards, prevent accidents, and optimize productivity. Let’s explore why construction site housekeeping is crucial and discuss practical strategies for achieving a safe work environment.

Safety First: Why Construction Site Housekeeping Matters

Injury prevention & minimizing risks.

Construction sites can be chaotic, often with multiple trades working concurrently. Poor housekeeping can lead to accidents, injuries, and costly delays. By prioritizing housekeeping practices, construction managers can significantly minimize risks. Keeping work areas free of clutter reduces the chance of tripping over debris, while organizing tools and equipment decreases the likelihood of accidental mishaps or damage.

Improved Efficiency & Productivity

When materials and equipment are properly stored and labeled, workers can easily locate and access what they need, reducing time wastage. Clear pathways and unobstructed access points allow for seamless movement around the site, facilitating effective workflow and preventing unnecessary delays.

Better Morale

Workers may feel more motivated and confident in a tidy work environment. It sends a message that their safety and well-being matter to the company. As a result, maintaining good housekeeping standards can improve employee morale and job satisfaction.

Best Housekeeping Practices:

Maintaining a safe and clean construction site requires implementing several essential practices:

  • Regular Inspections : Conducting routine inspections ensures any potential hazards are promptly identified and addressed. This proactive approach helps maintain a safe working environment.
  • Designated Storage Areas : Establishing designated storage areas for tools, equipment, and materials allows for easy identification, retrieval, and storage. This reduces the risk of misplaced or damaged items.
  • Waste and Debris Management: Implementing a proper waste management system is crucial to prevent debris accumulation, which can be a tripping hazard and lead to environmental violations. Regular removal of waste promotes a clean and safe work area.
  • Signage and Markings : Clearly labeling storage areas, hazardous zones, and emergency exits with appropriate signage and markings improves communication and reduces the risk of accidents.
  • Training and Awareness : Educating workers about the importance of housekeeping and providing training on proper procedures fosters a culture of safety and accountability.

Investing in Construction Site Housekeeping

For construction companies, investing in good housekeeping practices can yield substantial returns. It can help prevent accidents and injuries and enhances overall efficiency and job satisfaction.

10 Good Housekeeping Rules For A Tidy Construction Site

On construction sites, good housekeeping refers to the practice of keeping your site clean and tidy. A tidy work area reduces the risk of accidents and increases fire safety. Implement these 10 rules, and you should see a reduction in slip and trip accidents and near misses on your project.

10 Good Housekeeping Rules For A Tidy Construction Site header image

Good housekeeping is more than a magazine. On construction sites, good housekeeping refers to the practice of keeping your site clean and tidy. But should you even bother trying to make a construction site a clean and tidy place? Construction work is messy after all, and if you clean up now there will only be more mess later.

Yes, you should practice good housekeeping! A tidy work area reduces the risk of accidents and improves fire safety. If you don't have materials, waste and discarded tools lying around all over the place, there are fewer things to trip you up. Literally! And if you stop rubbish from piling up, there's less fuel for a fire, and if one does start, clearer escape routes to get out safely.

Not does good housekeeping improve safety, it will make your work more productive, and could even save you money . Because when a site is organised and tidy and everyone knows where everything is, they spend less time looking for things, and more time getting on with things!

This is all well and good in theory, but let's face it, tidying up is one of the jobs that tend to end up last on the list. On construction sites, for example, tidying up tends to be left until the end of the shift. But that just means you’re exposing yourself and others to trip hazards all day long – and that’s when the accidents will happen.

So here are 10 good housekeeping rules for a tidy site. Implement these, and you should see a reduction in slip and trip accidents and near misses to your workforce.

1. Designate an area for rubbish and waste.

Create an area for waste to go. After all, if you want your work area free from waste materials, you need somewhere to put them. This could be a skip or other waste disposal bin depending on the amount of waste. A best practice solution is to segregate waste types for reuse, recycle or landfill.

2. Stack and store materials safely.

Poorly stacked materials can block access routes or topple over causing crushing injuries or damage to property. You are going to need materials and tools for use throughout your project, store them safely to stop them from becoming a hazard.

3. Maintain a safe work area.

On a construction site, it's likely your job will create waste throughout the day. Whether it's packaging, demolishing, or off-cuts. Check your work area at regular intervals throughout the day and clear up as you go along. If trip hazards and mess is starting to build up, sort it out sooner rather than later.

4. Keep access routes clear.

A safe work area includes access and egress. It's how you get to your workplace, and how you leave. Don't leave materials/tools/benches etc in gangways/corridors where they might impede someone’s escape or cause a trip hazard (it might be you or a colleague who needs to get out in a hurry).

5. Put tools away when you’re done.

If you've finished using tools or equipment, put them away. It’s easy to leave items lying around, but if you won’t be needing them again in a hurry, put them away. If it’s out of use, it should be out of sight, or at least out from under your feet!

6. Set a tidy example.

Just because it’s not yours, doesn’t mean it’s not your responsibility. If you see anything lying on floors, stairways, passages that could cause people to trip and fall, pick it up and put it in a safe place – don't wait for someone else to move it, the next person might be the one who gets hurt.

7. If it is broken, fix it.

Fix it, or ditch it. Good housekeeping is also about keeping things in good working order on site. Damaged tools or equipment must be taken out of use so that can either be repaired or replaced.

8. Don’t let cables trip you up.

Trailing leads and cables from equipment are common trip hazards, particularly when using portable equipment. You may not have a socket close the working area, but make sure you route the lead away from walkways or access routes. Route cables where they do not cause a trip hazard to you or others.

9. Avoid fire risks.

Make sure waste or the storage of materials does not build up in fire escapes as you may need to use these escapes at some point. Clearing up and removing waste is also a good way to prevent fires on site . Fire needs fuel, so don’t allow waste materials to be stored close to sources of ignition. If all rubbish is regularly collected and put into the skip, in the event of the fire, the danger is confined and more easily dealt with.

10. Make others aware.

A tidy work area requires commitment from everyone. Raise awareness on your site with our free good housekeeping toolbox talk . Get everyone practising the same good housekeeping routines and you will be on your way to a tidy, and safe site, for everyone.

Getting to Know WebRezPro: Housekeeping Report

A housekeeper places fresh towels on a made bed

A lot of things are changing in the hospitality industry, but one fact that remains steadfast is the essential role that housekeeping plays in the running of a successful property. The pandemic has only amplified and reinforced the importance of housekeeping for keeping guests and staff safe and meeting higher-than-ever guest expectations. As one of the most significant contributors to guest satisfaction, guestroom cleanliness and quality is a top priority for any hotelier. Supporting the housekeeping team with the right software for managing and tracking housekeeping duties is key to improving productivity, accountability and room quality.

An essential component of any property management system, the housekeeping report provides details on room status, room notes, and current guests, and is crucial for communicating housekeeping information at a property with numerous rooms and employees.

WebRezPro’s interactive housekeeping report provides real-time information, flexible functionality and dual formats to suit your property’s needs.

Real-Time Information

Integrated with front desk, WebRezPro’s interactive housekeeping report improves interdepartmental communication, keeping housekeepers informed of room occupancy, and front desk staff informed of which rooms are clean and ready for new guests—in real time.

All housekeeping information is organized in a clean, user-friendly format. Every unit is displayed with entries signaling the current room status, occupancy, zone and any attached notes or maintenance alarms. The report also shows guest information for anyone arriving, departing or staying through, for any given unit.

Screenshot of WebRezPro Housekeeping Report in Table Format

Seven- and 28-day housekeeping overviews are also available from the Housekeeping menu, helping supervisors plan ahead.

Flexible Functionality

As an interactive report, the daily housekeeping report not only provides up-to-the-minute information about individual units, but also allows users to quickly sort, search and update that information. Using the report, employees can:

Change list order >>  The report can be sorted by room number, housekeeping status (e.g. clean, dirty, inspected…), unit type, occupancy, housekeeping zone, departing guests, arriving guests or guests staying through, simply by clicking on the appropriate column header.

Change room status >>  The status of a room can be changed by clicking on the edit icon for the applicable unit. Available statuses include ‘dirty,’ ‘housekeeper in room,’ ‘clean,’ ‘inspected,’ and ‘privacy.’

Add notes and alarms >>  An employee can add notes to a unit by clicking the edit icon. There are options to add a note that will remain only for the selected date or a permanent note which will remain until turned off. Maintenance alarms can be added by clicking the maintenance icon for a particular unit. The status of an alarm can be changed from ‘active’ to ‘work in progress’ to ‘work completed,’ as necessary.

Search by keyword >>  A search bar at the top of the report can be used to search for key words, for example, a guest name or housekeeping notes. Using this feature will filter the report by entries that contain the search term.

Assign and edit zones >>  Zones are used to group units together for housekeeping scheduling purposes. The ‘edit zone’ function is used to name zones and assign housekeepers to them. Units can be designated to different zones using the Bulk Actions feature.

Make bulk edits >>  By selecting applicable units (using the checkboxes in the far left column), and then selecting an option from the Bulk Actions menu at the top of the form, employees can change the status or zone of multiple units at a time.

Tile Format for Mobile

The daily housekeeping report is available in two different formats and users can easily switch between the two at any time. While the table format of the housekeeping report (pictured above) is ideal for communicating property-wide housekeeping requirements and status to housekeeping supervisors and front desk staff, tile format (pictured below) is ideal for individual housekeepers accessing the housekeeping report on a mobile device as they work.

Screenshot of WebRezPro Housekeeping Report in Tile Format

Housekeeping Checklists

Housekeeping checklists help properties ensure that they maintain the high standard of cleanliness and safety demanded by today’s guests.

Checklists can be created for both room cleans and inspections, and attached to specific unit types, allowing you to create different checklists for different room types. Each checklist can be set up with separate sections (e.g. Bathroom, Bed, Mini Bar) and tasks within each section so that housekeepers never miss a spot. Task descriptions can be added to help guide housekeepers through specific processes.

Screenshot of a WebRezPro Housekeeping Checklist

When housekeeping checklists are activated, the checklist attached to a room must be completed in order to update the status of the room to clean or inspected, helping to ensure a high standard of room quality. And a housekeeping checklist log keeps track of completed checklists by date for improved accountability.

The importance of an integrated housekeeping report cannot be understated. Every property should have a system that allows staff to track and update housekeeping information in real time to streamline internal communications and workflow, and improve guest satisfaction.

The housekeeping features described above are available in WebRezPro version 10.5.28. If you are currently using an earlier version of WebRezPro, please  contact us  for your free upgrade.

The Evening

Biden pulls closer to japan to counter china.

Also, inflation remained higher than expected. Here’s the latest at the end of Wednesday.

President Biden wearing sunglasses standing next to Fumio Kishida with a marching band and a review guard.

By Matthew Cullen

President Biden today hosted Japan’s prime minister, Fumio Kishida, at the White House for a pomp-filled state visit. The two leaders announced plans for greater coordination and integration between their militaries , which Biden described as “the most significant upgrade of our alliance since it was first established.”

Later tonight, the Bidens are holding an official state dinner in honor of Kishida — something reserved for America’s closest allies — featuring a performance by Paul Simon.

The tightening of the U.S.-Japan relationship is an important part of the Biden administration’s efforts to counter China’s aggressive actions in the Indo-Pacific region. Aides said one of Biden’s goals is to create as much permanence in U.S. relationships in the region before a potential Donald Trump presidency could shake things up. Tomorrow, Biden and Kishida will meet with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. of the Philippines.

Biden and Kishida today outlined the formation of a joint defense council that could support more exports of equipment produced in Japan, new cooperation on ventures in space and collaboration between research institutions. Biden announced that NASA’s Artemis program would take a Japanese astronaut to the moon, which would be a first for a non-American.

During the visit, Kishida made a point of reaffirming Japan’s “strong support for Ukraine” in its war against Russia, a key priority for Biden.

Inflation remained higher than expected

A closely watched measure of inflation was reported today at a level slightly higher than economists were expecting. The report was particularly worrying for Fed officials who have become concerned that their progress on lowering inflation might be stalling .

Through March, the Consumer Price Index climbed 3.8 percent on an annual basis after stripping out food and fuel prices, which economists do in order to get a better sense of the underlying trend. Counting food and fuel, the inflation measure climbed 3.5 percent — well below its 2022 peak, yet still above the Fed’s 2 percent target.

The stubbornness of inflation raised doubts among economists about when, and even whether, the Fed will be able to cut interest rates this year. It also put a dent in Biden’s plan to tout cooling inflation on the campaign trail.

Arizona Republicans halted efforts to repeal abortion ban

Just a day after the Arizona Supreme Court revived a 1864 law that bans nearly all abortions in the state, Democrats in the Legislature proposed bills this morning to immediately repeal it. Some Republicans, including Donald Trump, agreed that the ban went too far.

But state Republicans thwarted the repeal effort . In the State Senate, Republican leaders removed one of the bills from the day’s agenda. In the House, Republican leaders quickly put the House into recess before any vote could be held.

The U.S. sharply limited ‘forever chemicals’ in tap water

The head of the Environmental Protection Agency announced today that the U.S., for the first time, would require municipal water systems to remove six synthetic chemicals known collectively as PFAS. The chemicals, which have been linked to cancer and other health problems, are present in the tap water of hundreds of millions of Americans.

The E.P.A. set new near-zero limits on the chemicals, which are found in dental floss, firefighting foams and children’s toys. They are sometimes referred to as “forever chemicals” because they never fully degrade and can accumulate in the body and the environment.

Here’s what to know about them .

ONE LAST THING

Smell like blood, sweat and floorboards.

The perfume business has long been fueled by the notion that attractive, successful people ought to smell nice — perhaps like sandalwood, roses or freshly picked fruit. But a growing faction of fragrance enthusiasts are now more interested in smelling peculiar than pleasant .

That countermovement has led an increasing demand for scents that are bizarre, outlandish and even intentionally off-putting, like that of an old hotel, or of latex, gunpowder and biscuits. The reaction to one such scent, Sécrétions Magnifiques, caught the attention of one fragrance historian: “People scatter from it in terror. It’s beautiful.”

Have a distinct evening.

Thanks for reading. I’ll be back tomorrow. — Matthew

Covid vaccines not linked to fatal heart problems in young people, CDC finds

A nurse prepares doses of the Pfizer vaccine

There is no evidence that mRNA Covid vaccines cause fatal cardiac arrest or other deadly heart problems in teens and young adults, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report published Thursday shows.

Ever since the vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna were authorized in late 2020, anti-vaccination groups in the U.S. have blamed the shots for fatal heart problems in young athletes.

One of the most notorious examples of vaccine misinformation involves Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin , 26, who in 2023 collapsed on “Monday Night Football” as a result of cardiac arrest. Hamlin was resuscitated on the field and eventually recovered. He returned to play for the Bills last season.

“When Damar Hamlin went down, immediately comments were getting made that it was possibly vaccine-related,” said study co-author Dr. Paul Cieslak, the medical director of communicable diseases and immunizations at Oregon Health Authority’s public health division. “This is kind of what we were trying to address with this analysis.”

Damar Hamlin #3 of the Buffalo Bills

The findings in the new report come from the  analysis of nearly 1,300 death certificates of Oregon residents ages 16 to 30 who died from any heart condition or unknown reasons between June 1, 2021, and Dec. 31, 2022.

During this time period, nearly 1 million teens and young adults in the state had gotten a Covid vaccine, the authors wrote.

The authors refined their focus to people who got an mRNA Covid vaccine from Pfizer or Moderna and died within 100 days of being vaccinated.

Out of 40 deaths that occurred among people who got an mRNA Covid vaccine, three occurred within that time frame.

Two of the deaths were attributed to chronic underlying health conditions.

The third death was recorded as an “undetermined natural cause,” with toxicology tests returning negative for alcohol, cannabis, methamphetamine or other illicit substances.

The medical examiner could neither confirm nor exclude Covid vaccination as the cause of death; however, none of the death certificates attributed the fatalities to the vaccines.

While it remains unclear whether the vaccine caused the third death, Cieslak noted that the analysis showed that 30 people died from Covid during the time frame, the majority of whom were not vaccinated.

“When you’re balancing risks and benefits, you have to look at that and go, ‘You got to bet on the vaccine,’” he said.

Dr. Leslie Cooper, chair of the cardiology department at the Mayo Clinic, who was not involved in the study, said the researchers were actually “quite generous” in their analysis, adding that the 100-day time frame following vaccination was a large one.

“They went above and beyond to try and capture any possible cardiac death from vaccinations,” he said.

Cardiac arrest occurs when the heart stops beating and pumping blood to the rest of the body. It’s not the same as a heart attack, which happens when blood flow to the heart’s muscle becomes limited or blocked, or myocarditis, which is an inflammation of the heart muscle.

For people under 35, the causes of cardiac arrest are often unclear. It could be the result of genetic defects or heart malfunctions, such as problems with the valves of the heart.

Even with the lengthy time frame, Cooper added, the analysis shows that the risk of sudden death in young adults after being vaccinated is significantly lower than the risk of sudden cardiac death from all causes — about 1 in 500,000 per year, compared to 1 in 100,000 per year, according to his estimates.

The data shows “no signal for any elevation in cardiac deaths associated with the Covid mRNA vaccines,” he said. “Their conclusions are quite reasonable.”

No vaccine has ever been conclusively linked to sudden cardiac death, said Dr. Ofer Levy, the director of the Precision Vaccines Program at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Although the mRNA vaccines have been linked to a small risk of myocarditis , the heart condition tends to be much milder than what is typically seen with traditional myocarditis from Covid infection, he added, and most people fully recover within a few days .

“This adds to evidence that people don’t drop dead from getting their mRNA Covid vaccines,” Levy said of the study.
