fun things to do in Kissimmee

Kissimmee is the Osceola County seat and primarily rose in history as a ranching town.

It wasn’t until Disney World and similar attractions were built in Orlando that the city found a new calling: tourism.

A quaint, quiet spot, it’s easy to see why this is the country’s vacation home capital.

With nature, water, and a dash of history and culture, this is a relaxing place to go when escaping the hustle of bigger cities close by.

The word “Kissimmee” means “long water”, and the city was named after the large Kissimmee River that flows through it.

It’s fittingly well-populated by various animals who thrive on that ecosystem, including alligators and crocodiles!

But don’t let those snapping reptiles scare you away from a place with so much to enjoy.

Not sure what to check out?

Here are our picks for the 37 best and fun things to do in Kissimmee, Florida.

Table of Contents

It’s one of the best places to visit for a break from the heat and bustle of Florida’s cities.

Here, you’ll see gorgeous views of Lake Toho, a fishing pier to use, a nice splash zone for children, and tons of picnic areas.

You can also simply jog or walk along the many trails in the park.

Kissimmee Lakefront Park is also home to a unique monument known as the Monument of States .

It was erected after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The idea was developed by Charles Bressler-Pettis, a retired doctor, who wrote to all of the 48 states at the time and asked them to send him rocks from each state.

This was to create a symbol of unity to bring the nation together.

Once all the rocks were delivered, Bressler-Pettis began building the 50-foot tower.

He did so by embedding each rock into a slab of concrete, then labeling the rocks with who sent it and where it came from.

The monument weighs more than 100,000 pounds and is both impressive and a little unsightly, with garish concrete, shining plaques, and mismatched fossils and rocks.

It even includes some from other countries!

This is definitely the highlight of Kissimmee Lakefront Park.

Celebration

Are you looking for some fun day trips to take close to Kissimmee?

Head out to the small little town of Celebration!

The town is filled with vibrant buildings and beautiful views, accompanied by an ambiance of whimsy and quirkiness.

But when Disney passed away, EPCOT became a full theme park.

Decades later, Celebration would be created by Disney architects, only to be sold off in 2004.

Though there are no Disney-themed buildings or attractions in Celebration, it has an atmosphere of jubilation, camaraderie, and brightness.

Just three miles from the city, it’s a rather unique spot in Florida.

The museum is dedicated to the Tupperware brand and its history.

It was in 1964 that plasticware containers, patented with a “burping” design, would begin their sale throughout American grocery stores.

Created by Earl Tupper, these polyethylene containers would go on to completely change the way we keep and serve leftovers.

As you enter the museum, you’ll be greeted by Tuppy, the Tupperware seal.

The animal mascot is a play on words of the Tupperware Seal of Freshness.

As he looks over you, you’ll be able to learn all about the different containers of the brand’s history.

There are vintage dining sets, the Wonderbowl, plastic porringers, and molding machines on display.

Touchscreens allow you to learn more about the company as a whole.

The name of the Tupperware Confidence Center comes from its “chain of confidence”, which was a long campaign meant to empower women.

This is why you can also learn about Brownie Wise here, the woman who pioneered the Tupperware Party.

She was also Businessweek’s first woman on the magazine’s cover.

51 Fun Things to Do in Kissimmee, Florida

fun things to do in Kissimmee, Florida

As its larger and more famous neighbor Orlando shines brightly in the tourist spotlight each and every year, renowned for its world-class theme parks, endless entertainment, and non-stop shopping opportunities, Kissimmee remains a hidden gem when it comes to central Floridian tourism.

Boasting all the perks of being a stone’s throw from Orlando — Disney, Universal, Legoland, and the rest — yet smaller crowds, oft-cheaper hotels, and the serenity of Lake Toho on its doorstop, most travelers are pleasantly surprised by the diversity and excitement of all the things to do in Kissimmee .

Whether you’re taking a spin on an airboat in search of gators, gliding above the world in a hot air balloon, or splashing around with friendly dolphins, you’ll be able to enjoy all of the elements here… with gusto!

On the quieter side of things, you can taste some phenomenal wines, witness a jaw-dropping live show, or check out a piece of old-school roadside history – all in one day!

Not sure where to start your trip? Need some help planning the adventure of a lifetime? Then read on!

1 – Kick off your trip at Fun Spot America!

Fun Spot theme park, Orlando

Not to be confused with Fun Spot Orlando (but with just as many laughs and thrills to be expected), Fun Spot America is a theme park for those who want thrills without the chaotic crowd levels of Disney.

Put the pedal to the metal as you zip around the enormous, multi-level go-kart tracks; hold on for dear life as you twist and turn at high speeds on the thrilling Galaxy Spin; or literally turn your world upside down on Headrush 360.

Of course, for something a little tamer, there’s also plenty of classic Midway games and kid-friendly rides like the Crazy Couch or Ferris Wheel.

2 – Zoom down the slides at Island H2O Live!

Island H2O Live! waterpark, Orlando

As one of sunny Florida’s newest theme parks, Island H2O combines our favorite water rides with the latest technology and innovation for an enjoyable day in the sun.

Unlike most water parks, H20 Live! is a distinctly modern experience: themes of social media and internet-savvy entertainment dominate.

With an enormous wave pool, a variety of slides (some daringly dark), and even a surf simulator that lets you feel what it’s like to ride waves on your own body, there’s something here for everyone

3 – Spy some gators on a Boggy Creek airboat ride

Boggy Creek sunset airboat tour

Ever wanted to see a gator up close? Or experience the swampy wilderness of Florida’s Lake Tohopekaliga?

If so, then this is your chance as you take an airboat ride around the boggy creeks (hence the name). Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for herons or otters, or even an ominous gator lurking in the shadows.

Besides being arguably Florida’s most authentic wildlife experience, the thrill of the airboat itself — which can transition from calm and slow to hair-raising in the blink of an eye — is a worthy experience in and of itself.

Epcot, Walt Disney World Resort, Orlando

If you’re looking for a Disney park that’s perhaps filled with more culture and sophistication, then Epcot Park is your best bet.

Visit Celebration

Close your eyes. Imagine a small town designed by Disney architects. Open your eyes. You can find the real thing in Celebration, Florida, one of the best things to do near Kissimmee.

With a quaint atmosphere, candy-colored buildings, and scenic views, Celebration was inspired by Walt Disney’s dream of creating a “perfect utopian city,” or the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, aka EPCOT.

The original plans included placing the city under a climate-controlled dome and a convenient monorail system. “Epcot” became a full theme park instead as Disney died in 1966, decades before Celebration was born.

With an open town square with lights strung above, Celebration still retains traces of that Disney magic, even after the company sold the town in 2004. However, no businesses or buildings are Disney-themed.

Even though you won’t find any hidden Mickeys, the small town has fewer than 7,500 residents that give the area a homey camaraderie. You’ll be charmed with their library, post office, shops, restaurants, a dog park, and even an abandoned movie theatre.

A small fountain sits in the town plaza at Celebration, Florida, formerly owned by Walt Disney World.

If you are visiting Florida, make sure you get a visitor’s fishing license. Children under sixteen do not need a license. If you are on a charter, you do not need a license as long as there is a valid charter license or the captain has a license. Make sure to follow all fishing regulations.

15 Best Things to do in Kissimmee, Florida

Table of Contents

1. Kayak at Shingle Creek

Kayaking Shingle Creek - Things to do in Kissimmee

One of the best waterways to explore close to Kissimmee is Shingle Creek. This is the most northerly part of the Everglades, and it’s a beautiful place to visit.

The creek flows directly into Lake Tohopekaliga, and the regional park that protects the ecosystem is home to wildlife and walking trails. The best way to see Shingle Creek though is to kayak along the water, as a 7-mile long paddle trail extends along the creek.

Despite being right in the city, you are instantly swept away into a nature oasis. You can hardly hear any road noise and once you get into the thicker parts of the forest, you feel very remote and wild.

We spent 2 hours kayaking here and saw a large variety of animals including turtles, frogs, snakes, water birds and birds of prey. There is so much going on back there that you never get bored.

2. Lake Tohopekaliga

things to do in Kissimmee Florida

Lake Tohopekaliga is the large lake that extends to the south of the city, and one of the best things to do in Kissimmee is to explore its beautiful shoreline. Lake Toho as it’s known to the locals has long been an important meeting point for the indigenous Seminole people who call the area home and it’s a place that’s steeped in legend.

You’ll soon realize why when you first see the sunlight shimmering off the water, or as you immerse yourself in nature and wildlife. There are walking trails around the lake and some lovely parks and recreational areas around its edge.

3. Explore Gatorland

Hiking at Gatorland, Kissimmee, Florida

If you’re interested in learning more about the local wildlife, then one of the best things to do in Kissimmee is to visit Gatorland. Alligators are Florida’s most famous animal, and Gatorland is home to hundreds of these fearsome creatures.

As well as providing dramatic shows to visitors, and allowing tourists to learn more about alligators, Gatorland is also a sanctuary, as the park takes in many animals that would otherwise be put down in the wild for causing trouble to humans.

Bok Tower Gardens was the brainchild of Edward W. Bok, publisher, Pulitzer Prize-winning author, and humanitarian. He would winter in Florida near Lake Wales and fell in love with the area that is now Bok Tower Gardens.

His vision was to create a bird sanctuary and lush gardens, with the centerpiece being a 60-bell carillon tower. He wanted this pastoral setting to “touch the soul with beauty and quiet.”

Mr. Bok, however, wanted to avoid keeping this slice of quiet paradise to himself. He wanted to share it with others. So on February 1, 1929, Edward Bok opened the gardens to the public as a gift to the people of America.

Lake Placid is like any other small American town, with a farmers' market, a main street, quaint stores, and locals milling about on a Sunday afternoon. What sets this place apart is the collection of 50 murals painted on the sides of buildings around town. Each one depicts something different about the history of Lake Placid, its culture, or some of its prominent citizens. Some have sound and others have hidden clues within them to spot.

Many museums in Florida are either free to visit or have regular free admission days. Many museums in Orlando, for example, offer visitors free entry on the first weekend of every month. Meanwhile, these are some that remain free year-round: The Florida Museum of Natural History and the Harn Museum of Art in Gainesville; the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach (pictured); the Museum of Florida History in Tallahassee; and the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola.

Manatees, also known as sea cows, are unique aquatic mammals that feed on herbaceous seagrasses. These gentle creatures can be hard to spot in the wild, but head to the Manatee Viewing Center in Apollo Beach, and you're almost guaranteed a sighting. They’re attracted to the warm water put out by a nearby power station and they flock here to bask in the warmth in scores.

The University of Florida campus is the unexpected setting for the largest bat houses in the world. These two wooden structures are located in an open field on the north side of Museum Road across from Lake Alice. Each night around 15 to 20 minutes after sunset, look up to the western sky over the pine trees and around the streetlights, and you’ll see upwards of 500,000 bats emerging for their nightly feed.

From the beautiful weather to the potential risks of hurricanes and flooding, we’ll give you a comprehensive overview of what it’s like to live in this Central Florida city. So, whether you’re looking for an apartment or new home in Kissimmee  or simply curious about life in the area, keep reading to learn more.

Kissimmee, FL

Pros of living in Kissimmee

1. beautiful weather year-round.

One of the biggest pros of living in Kissimmee is the weather. Kissimmee enjoys warm temperatures year-round, with an average high of 82 degrees Fahrenheit and an average low of 62 degrees Fahrenheit. This means that you can enjoy outdoor activities and events all year long without having to worry about snow or extremely cold temperatures. With sunshine nearly every day of the year, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings that Kissimmee has to offer.

2. Welcoming community

Another great reason to move to Kissimmee is the diversity and friendliness of the community. The city has a mix of residents from different backgrounds and cultures, which makes it a welcoming place for people from all over the world. Whether you’re looking for a close-knit neighborhood or a more urban setting, you’ll find plenty of options in Kissimmee.

3. World-class theme parks and attractions

Kissimmee is home to some of the world’s most famous theme parks and attractions. From Walt Disney World to Gatorland to Universal Studios Florida, there’s something for everyone in Kissimmee.

You can spend a day exploring the rides and attractions at the theme parks or take a leisurely stroll through the nearby nature parks and preserves. Additionally, Kissimmee is a short drive away from many other popular destinations, such as the Kennedy Space Center, the Everglades, and the Gulf of Mexico.

Kennedy Space Center

4. Affordable cost of living

Compared to other major cities in Florida, Kissimmee has a lower cost of living . Housing prices are more affordable, with homes selling for a median price of $330,000. This is lower than Orlando, FL, which has a median sale price of $345,000, and the average for the state of Florida, which has a median sale price of $390,000.

You’ll find that the cost of groceries, utilities, and other expenses are generally lower as well. This makes it a great option for people who want to live in Florida without breaking the bank. Additionally, Kissimmee offers a variety of housing options, from apartments to single-family homes, so you can find a place that fits your budget and lifestyle.

5. Easy access to nature

Is Kissimmee a good place to live for outdoor enthusiasts? You bet. Kissimmee is surrounded by natural beauty, with numerous parks, lakes, and preserves located nearby. One of the most notable natural attractions is the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes, a series of interconnected lakes that offer plenty of opportunities for boating, fishing, and other outdoor activities.

Additionally, the nearby Lake Tohopekaliga (Lake Toho) is known for its bass fishing and is a popular spot for both recreational and professional anglers. If you’re someone who enjoys spending time in nature, Kissimmee is the perfect place to be.

Your next home is just a tap away

1. high humidity.

Kissimmee, like much of Florida , has a high level of humidity throughout the year. This can make the hot temperatures feel even more oppressive and uncomfortable, and it can also lead to issues with mold and mildew in homes and buildings. Those who are sensitive to humidity or have respiratory issues may find it challenging to adjust to the climate in Kissimmee.

2. High cost of home insurance

Due to its location in Florida, Kissimmee is susceptible to hurricanes and other natural disasters . As a result, home and flood insurance rates in the area can be higher than in other parts of the country. This can add to the overall cost of living in Kissimmee, and it may be a consideration for those who are purchasing a home in the area.

3. Risk of flooding

Along with the risk of hurricanes, Kissimmee is also susceptible to flooding due to its location near several bodies of water. This can be a concern for those who live in low-lying areas or near rivers and lakes. While there are measures in place to help mitigate the risk of flooding , such as levees and drainage systems, it’s still a potential hazard to be aware of.

Florida flooding

4. Crowds and tourists

While the tourism industry is a significant contributor to the local economy, it can also lead to crowds and congestion in certain areas. The theme parks and attractions in the area can draw large crowds, particularly during peak travel times. This can make it challenging for locals who want to enjoy these attractions without dealing with the crowds. Additionally, some may find that the constant influx of tourists can detract from the sense of community in the area.

5. Limited job opportunities

While Kissimmee does have a thriving job market in certain industries, such as tourism and healthcare, it may not offer the same range of job opportunities as larger cities. This can make it challenging for those who are looking for work in other fields, or for those who are seeking more specialized positions. Additionally, the job market in Kissimmee can be competitive, particularly for entry-level positions.

Is Kissimmee a good place to live? Final thoughts

Kissimmee is an excellent place to live for many reasons so it’s no wonder that so many people are choosing to call this city home.

However, there are some potential cons to living in Kissimmee. By being aware of these potential drawbacks and taking steps to mitigate them, you can enjoy all that Kissimmee has to offer while minimizing any potential challenges. If you’re considering a move to Florida, be sure to add Kissimmee to your list of places to check out.

How to travel around the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in Baltimore: A look at the traffic impact and alternate routes

By Rohan Mattu

Updated on: March 27, 2024 / 8:04 AM EDT / CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE -- The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday  led to a major traffic impact for the region and cut off a major artery into and out of the port city.

A bridge column was hit by a large container ship around 1:30 a.m., sending bridge workers and vehicles into the Patapsco River. A water search for six missing workers turned to a recovery effort Tuesday night.

Drivers are told to prepare for extra commuting time until further notice.

Locator map showing the typical traffic routes of cargo vessels passing beneath the bridge and the trajectory Dali followed prior to the allision.

Alternate routes after Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse

Maryland transit authorities quickly put detours in place for those traveling through Dundalk or the Curtis Bay/Hawkins Point side of the bridge. The estimated 31,000 who travel the bridge every day will need to find a new route for the foreseeable future.

The outer loop I-695 closure shifted to exit 1/Quarantine Road (past the Curtis Creek Drawbridge) to allow for enhanced local traffic access.

The inner loop of I-695 remains closed at MD 157 (Peninsula Expressway). Additionally, the ramp from MD 157 to the inner loop of I-695 will be closed.

Alternate routes are I-95 (Fort McHenry Tunnel) or I-895 (Baltimore Harbor Tunnel) for north/south routes.

Commercial vehicles carrying materials that are prohibited in the tunnel crossings, including recreation vehicles carrying propane, should plan on using I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) between Essex and Glen Burnie. This will add significant driving time.

Where is the Francis Scott Key Bridge?

The Key Bridge crosses the Patapsco River, a key waterway that along with the Port of Baltimore serves as a hub for East Coast shipping.

The bridge is the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor and the final link in Interstate 695, known in the region as the Baltimore Beltway, which links Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

The bridge was built after the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel reached capacity and experienced heavy congestion almost daily, according to the MDTA.

Tractor-trailer inspections

Tractor-trailers that now have clearance to use the tunnels will need to be checked for hazardous materials, which are not permitted in tunnels, and that could further hold up traffic.

The MDTA says vehicles carrying bottled propane gas over 10 pounds per container (maximum of 10 containers), bulk gasoline, explosives, significant amounts of radioactive materials, and other hazardous materials are prohibited from using the Fort McHenry Tunnel (I-95) or the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895).

Any vehicles transporting hazardous materials should use the western section of I-695 around the tunnels, officials said.
