Great historical ship!
Lane Victory is one of only three surviving Victory ships, and she is a fascinating example of a merchant marine vessel from a different era. For an admission fee of only $7 you can access most areas of the ship, including two interesting and informative museum display areas packed with artifacts and information. The staff are all volunteers and you can tell they love the ship and are doing their best to preserve her and assist visitors, but she is a little rough in spots. So come out and support this great old ship and the people who take care of her!
There is a lot of history in the lower deck of this ship docked in San Pedro. It is named after Isaac Lane, an African-American Church planter of the 1880’s. One delightful thing about this ship is that unlike the Iowa Battleship which moored two miles away, this ship is tied by ropes to the dock. Therefore, it floats and moves with the harbor waves. At first, I thought it was a side effect of some pain medicine I took! However, my fiancé said she felt the ship rocking back and forth too. That made the tour all that more realistic. The down to earth ship’s cook Bobby took a group of us around the ship with great tips about the service of this historic ship museum. We especially liked the conning tower and the inner workings of the ship. We suggest you call ahead before visiting because this ship still is used for filming special events and civic documentaries just as it was during its heyday as you will learn. A side feature of that area is the weekend free hop on, hop off red bus that takes you through several interesting places around San Pedro.
After all my life living in the Greater Los Angeles are and seeing the resent addition of the Battleship USS Iowa docked in Long Beach I found another ship that has been here for 30 years, the S.S. Lane Victory. The Lane Victory was a Merchant Marine ship which served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War "was well as in times of peace as part of the merchant fleet." "Now a nationally recognized historic landmark, the S.S. Lane Victory serves as a living museum and memorial to the service and sacrifices of all Merchant Marine sailors and Navy Armed Guardsmen." I never realized how much support the Merchant Marines gave to the war effort protecting our country. I nice thing about visiting this ship museum is that you can do it at your own pace looking at all the open areas of the ship and spending as much or as little time you want. The ship was divided into two parts, one area for the Navy Guardsmen and the other part for the Merchant Marines and naturally the large cargo areas. I was amazed that the Merchant Marines did not get veterans benefits. I don't know and wonder if they received any benefits? I highly recommend taking time to visit this ship museum and learn about another part of our defense we don't hear much about.
I had the pleasure of visiting the Lane Victory about 2002, when my Grandfather Bob was still around and a dedicated volunteer (Engine Room, Oiler). We put on boiler suits and did some painting :) He sat on a similar ship loaded with artillery shells during the Battle of Leyte, PI and they watched the Kamakaze planes crash into other ships feeling fear, sorrow and desperately hoping they wouldn't be next. Visiting the Lane will bring the living conditions, the technology--and the fear--that our brave WW2 generation lived with while serving their country. I have my Grandfather's WW2 Merchant Marine Victory Medal, his Wartime Shipping Administration Transit Slips for a dozen round the world voyages and his US Coast Guard Certificates. I value these so much. But I tell you, I would gladly throw it all into the sea and never look back for just one more chance to walk with him aboard the Lane Victory. Next time I get to the west coast I will take my children and tell them about thier brave grandfather and his comrades. I highly recommend you read a little bit on this and bring YOUR children to the Lane Victory before these things fade into our history forever.
I was super excited to visit and that was short lived once we got there. I understand there is special events for production. The boat is used all the time just upset because I bought tickets to go and unable to go due to it being closed until Monday. Please make sure to call if you are traveling far
This museum has many stories to tell from the shipyard where it was built to the Hollywood movies and TV shows that are filmed on board the SS Lane Victory. The "Gangway Watchman" Chips Chiappinelli who was in the Battle of the Philippine Sea in 1944 told us all about the signal flags and what to see on the ship. We wondered all through the museums which have many interesting exhibits about the Victory-class ships. I gave this museum 5 stars because it represents an important part of our history. There are only two of these ships left of the nearly 500 that were produced. Take time to read about the California Shipbuilding Corp. That is an amazing story.

I must tell the public that the SS Lane Victory has engine room problems with the port boiler. It needs major repair and the donated funds are simply not there. I stumbled on the reason looking for something else. The ship USED to get underway each summer but no more till they get a benefactor. So do not go there expecting a summer outing till it is repaired.
Very cool experience. Lots of history and sweet views. Highly recommend for photographers.
We bought a Groupon for the S.S. Lane Victory, and we truly enjoyed our time with this this ship. It's wonderful to know there's a piece of history so close to us. My mother was fascinated with the history and tour. I highly recommend a visit for those who consider themselves history buffs.
A waste of $14 and the 15 minutes it took to walk around. When we were there, we were the only tourists on-board and now I understand why. On the positive side, one peninsula over - on Signal St. - is the iconic Warehouse No.1, which I do recommend.
Great trip back in time. Really made history come alive. Even my kids, 8 and 6 really enjoyed it.
Fun little place to explore. Take your kids. $5 for adult and ive heard about cruise and dinner and show. I will be writing about that when I do...
Lane Victory
This is the best ship docked in So-Cal. I enjoyed it much more then the Battle Ship Iowa, which was nice, but not that interesting. Friendly staff, 2 museums, full run of the ship to explore every deck. The cruise is one of the best times I think I've ever had. Great meals, coffee, dancing, swing band, aerial show & fresh air. You get to take a living museum out for the day on the sea. Constant sight seeing and attractions on the way out to Catalina. I can't wait for the ship to be operational again. I wouldn't miss it. One word of advice, put some ear plugs in your pocket. The pyrotechnics of the aerial show are extremely loud, and goes on for a good while.

A wonderful piece of history! Everyone should visit this place. Great for kids! Great for field trip
So, after checking the website, I hop in my car at 9:00AM. After an hour and a half of driving I arrive at the location of the ship. I guess she's not in her regular berth, and they've put up signs leading to her current location. The signs lead me to a parking lot somewhat close to the boat, but not really close. And even these parking spots say 'No Parking.' So I drove around confusedly, and eventually give up and pull into a 'construction workers only' lot that's next to the ship. I walk up to the gang-way into the ship, and see a frustrated guy leading his daughters down it. Up at the top, there's a sign blocking entrance. 'No Admittance.' The guy looks at me and says 'They're closed. Filming something or other.' He sighs and walks back to his truck. I also sigh, and take a few pictures of the outside of the ship. I then returned to my car and proceeded to see what else is in San Pedro. I get it, non-profit, making money to survive....but a simple 'hey, we're filming on these days' on the website or voicemail message can't be too hard....right? They got 2 stars because despite not being open, they still saved me from another boring Sunday on the couch at home.
Photo from outside the ship. (Sorry, it's all I got, never got inside the ship)
I will give the ship itself an 3 star rating, but zero stars for customer service and management. To explain, I bought two tickets at $125.00 each for one of their cruises a few years back. Two days before the cruise my girlfriend went to the hospital due to an serious life threatening infection. When I went to the ship on cruise day, I explained what happened to my girlfriend and was told by a very nice lady that they would keep and file the ticket as a record and though I would have to pay a $25.00 change fee I would be able to use her ticket on a later cruise. Cut to today a few years later, my girlfriend is now well and looking forward to finally taking the cruise I promised as she has the rare free weekend. I drove 10 miles to their office with my old used single ticket and my credit card receipt for two tickets and was told that they now have a new system and there is no record of my purchase. After showing them my used single ticket and credit card receipt for two tickets I was informed that this wasn't proof enough and I was just out of luck. When I asked what more proof did I need they said I should have the unused ticket. I pointed out that the lady at the office said she would keep the ticket for her records so I could use it when we were able to return. The only answer I got after that was to tell me that I didn't have good enough proof for a court of law (common sense and customer service are obviously missing here). I pointed out that in effect they were calling me a liar and why would they think that I would drive over there and try to beat them out of one ticket. They told me that I should have used it the next year or called in or asked for a refund and that I just waited too long. I again pointed out that all I was told by the lady in the office was that they would keep the ticket and let me use it later, there was no mention of any time limit, that I was supposed to check in or do anything but show up when I was ready to use the ticket. Again I was told that was just too bad but they weren't about to give me any sort of credit. As I promised my girlfriend that I would take her on the cruise I bought two new tickets and informed them that this has cost them an annual two ticket buy as I was planning to make this an annual affair. I have started and owned million dollar businesses all of which have been hugely successful and would I ever have treated a customer like I was treated here, I would have been out of business in an heartbeat. One cruise and no more as they obviously felt that screwing me out of $125.00 is worth more than my repeat business and good will!

A Cruise On The S.S. Lane Victory
Six times a year, during the summer, the SS Lane Victory leaves port for an all day adventure in order to teach people about the Merchant Marine in WWII. It was fun, entertaining, and educational! A great way to spend a Saturday! Please joint us in the adventure....
Did You Know? - Currently they are NOT doing cruises because of a "Busted Boiler" which costs a load of money to fix/replace.
FDR 1943: "The men of our American Merchant Marine have pushed through despite the perils of the submarine, the dive bomber and the surface raider. They have returned voluntarily to their jobs at sea again and again, because they realized that the life-lines to our battle fronts would be broken if they did not carry out their vital part in this global war. . . In their hands, our vital supply lines are expanding. Their skill and determination will keep open the highway to victory and unconditional surrender.?
She began her first wartime journey on June 27, 1945, in the closing stages of World War II. She delivered munitions, loaded in Port Hueneme, California to Admiralty Island in the Pacific. She went on to serve with distinction in both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts.
During the Korean War, Lane Victory's moment of glory came in December 1950, during the evacuation of Korean civilians and United Nations personnel from Wonsan. As the cruiser Saint Paul and destroyers laid down a covering fire, Lane Victory offloaded troops, vehicles and cargo. She then evacuated 7,010 men, women and children, taking them south to safety. When they arrived, 7,011 got off the ship....a baby had been born during the voyage.
In September 1966, Lane Victory joined the Vietnam War effort. She was returned to the Ready Reserve Fleet in 1970. In 1982, the U.S. Merchant Marine Veterans of World War II commenced efforts to acquire her. Their objective was twofold: to have her serve as a living memorial to the men and women of the U.S. Merchant Marine and U.S. Navy Armed Guard; and to operate her as a working museum dedicated to the maritime trades. She was towed from San Francisco to San Pedro in June 1989.
Did you know? - She was named after Lane College, which was established as a high school for black youths in 1882 by Isaac Lane, a bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Jackson, Tennessee. The school grew into a prominent liberal arts college.
Lane Victory is now fully operational and is supported by 6 'Victory at Sea' WWII-Cruises each summer off Catalina Island. She has also been used as a set for many motion pictures and television productions. SS Lane Victory is a National Historic Landmark.
Did you know? - The Lane Victory was built by the California Shipbuilding Corporation in Los Angeles, California and launched on 31 May 1945. On her first voyage, 27 June 1945, Lane Victory carried supplies in the Pacific. She was operated by the American President Lines.
Did you know? - In 1950 the Lane Victory was used to evacuate Korean civilians and U.N. personnel at Wonsan, North Korea during the Korean War. The ship also saw duty during the Vietnam War. In 1970, she was placed in the reserve fleet. Because of her excellent condition, the Maritime Administration decided to set aside the Lane Victory for preservation.

SS LANE VICTORY is one of the Liberty Ships built during World War II and served during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The ship was laid up in Suisun Bay, Calif., for many years until she was donated as a museum. Today, the LANE VICTORY is maintained by volunteers of the US Merchant Marine Veterans of World War II and is kept in great condition. Her propulsion system is fully functional and the LANE VICTORY regularly conducts cruises off Los Angeles. The photos below were taken by me on March 25, 2010, during a visit to the SS LANE VICTORY museum at San Pedro, Calif.
