      When Robinson Helicopter Company introduced the four seat R-44 in 1992 it quickly became one of the world’s best selling and most produced helicopters. The two-bladed, single engine helicopter is the “big sister” to the smaller two-seat R-22.

A helicopter ride over DC isn’t really possible, there are however tours that take you near the city and to other landmarks around the city that are not in the flight-restriction zone .

Some companies do have pilots that are vetted to fly within the flight-restriction zone and are willing to file the required documents to take you on a helicopter ride in the city. However, you do need an extremely compelling reason to do so for the FAA to approve you.

So, if you just want a quick fly over to wave to the president that probably won’t be reason enough to get the thumbs up.

There are little to no helicopter tour companies in Washington DC itself with most being located in the neighbouring city of Baltimore.

Monumental Helicopters

Monumental helicopters is an FAA certified air carrier and offers helicopter tours, aerial photography and a flight school service. They are located between the cities of Washington DC and Baltimore in Tipton Airport.

Due to the restricted fly-zone over Washington DC, they also only offer tours of neighbouring areas, unless you can convince the FAA to allow you into the fly-zone.

They offer helicopter rides for special events and seasonal flights as well as various tours that include:

• Bridges, Boats and Bay tour

*Due to current Covid regulations, Monumental Helicopters is not currently operating and will commence flights as soon as the situation changes.

Baltimore City Lights Tour

Witness the splendour that is Baltimore as it comes to life at night and illuminates the dark sky from above. Seeing a city lit up at night has a way of romanticizing it and is the added ‘WOW’ factor.

Flight time is approximately 30 minutes and costs $249 USD per person with tours being private and a three-passenger limit.

Bridges, Boats and Bay Tour

Have you ever wanted to experience the Chesapeake Bay from above and fly along its banks, chasing the boats and zooming along the shoreline? This flight is for you then with this route taking you out over the bay, along Chesapeake Bay bridge, along the coastline and back.

This isn’t a bad way to spend some quality time with your partner with the flight time being approximately 40 minutes and costing $249 USD per person. All tours are private and limited to 3 passengers.

DC Helicopters

Conveniently located within the city of Baltimore on Pier 7, an easily accessible location for all traveling into the city and who are already staying in Baltimore. It’s location also means that you miss Baltimore’s notorious gridlock traffic.

Charm City operates the Bell 206 aircraft, the only turbine-powered tour helicopter in the area that seats 4 passengers. Comfort for their passengers is most important with leather seats and every flight having Bose noise-cancelling headsets.

DC Helicopter Tour

Although not over the city itself, this flight tour will take you as close as you can be to the city. This provides ample opportunities to escape the DC heat in summer and cool off in the sky and capture some of the most incredible views from the air.

Flight time is 15 minutes each way plus the amount of time that you would like to spend flying near the city.

Pricing is $1850 USD per hour in a private aircraft. The flight can start and end at Charm City’s Pier 7 or College Park Airport. You should book flights two weeks to 30 days in advance.

Charm City Tour

The ultimate tour of Baltimore where you can witness all that the city has to offer from the air and not be stuck in the traffic.

You will pass over sites such as the historic Fells Point, the inner harbour, Mount Vernon, downtown Baltimore and the USS Constellation to name a few. And there are many more attractions to see on the flight path.

Flight time is approximately 18-20 minutes and costs $199 USD per person and an additional $10 USD per person heliport fee.

We were running over half an hour late for our night time helicopter ride, however the team were incredibly accommodating and got us through the safety checks in a flash. Once we were up in the air the pilot was great at giving small amounts of info on New York and some of the sights and made everyone feel at ease! All in all the night time veiws were amazing and it was a magical part of our time in NYC, highly recommend!!

The Highlights

15 Minute Helicopter Ride

Our flight to our glacier dog sledding camp takes a beautiful scenic route up Godwin Glacier. Fly over incredible blue glacier ice and by immense waterfalls. On the return trip, fly through a stunning glacier-filled valley.

15 Minute Landing

Land on, next to, or at the toe of a nearby glacier or mountain top. Where we land depends on the time of year and the stability of the glaciers and snowpack in the area.

Custom departure times available by request

This excursion lasts approximately 30 minutes but we ask you to arrive 15 minutes ahead of your scheduled departure. We advise blocking off approximately 1 hour for this tour.

$239 per seat. Children under 24 months are complimentary but must ride on the lap of an adult. 

Price excludes a 1.6% online booking fee capped at $20.

Gear We Provide

We provide rain jackets if needed but advise packing your own for your trip to Alaska. If you have your own raincoat, we ask that you bring it.

What to Wear

Please wear sunglasses and dress in layers. Closed-toed shoes are mandatory for an optimal experience. Even on sunny days, a wind layer is advised.

Booking Tips

We recommend booking your trip for the first day you are in Seward if you are here for multiple days. If not, make sure to book in the morning. May through mid-August we recommend early morning departures. August through September we recommend mid-morning to early afternoon departures.

Weather Policy

If we cannot fly, there is a full refund. If you have the time, we will work to reschedule your tour. This tour is more weather dependent than some of our other scenic flights as we fly into a mountainous valley.

Weight Policy

Due to FAA policy, we cannot fly any passengers that weigh over 300 lbs. Additionally, we have a total weight capacity of approximately 585 lbs for this tour. If your combined weight exceeds this, we will have to split your group for flying and additional charges may be incurred. Please feel free to call our office with questions.

Cancellation Policy

We ask that all cancellations be made at least 48 hours in advance. Cancellations made within 48 hours of your scheduled departure will be fully charged.

2 pilots hospitalized after Army helicopter crashes during training exercise in Washington state

The cause of the crash is under investigation, by associated press • published march 26, 2024.

An Army helicopter crashed at a military base in Washington state during a routine training exercise Monday night, sending the two pilots to a hospital.

A Joint Base Lewis-McChord spokesperson told The News Tribune Tuesday that what the person called an “aviation mishap” on Monday night involved a U.S. Army AH-64E Apache helicopter assigned to 4-6 ACS, 16th Combat Aviation Brigade.

Fire crews and deputies were sent to the crash between Yelm and Olympia about 9:45 p.m.

Southeast Thurston Fire Chief Mark King said the marshy, brush-heavy terrain was difficult to access.

The two pilots survived the crash, he said. One was taken by ground and one was transported by air to Madigan Army Medical Center at JBLM, King said. The names of the pilots and the extent of their injuries weren't released.
