Lohagad Fort Trek: A Day trip from Pune

Lohagad Fort Trek: One day trip from Pune

Last Updated on March 5, 2024 by admin

Lohagad Fort is a popular day trip from Pune and especially visited in monsoon. Check out this guide on Lohagad Fort Trek.

Monsoon season in Pune means heading to the Western Ghats. The first rains are especially special and if it is a weekend then day trips around Pune are for trekking, nature walks, camping and chasing waterfalls.

Pune’s surroundings are nature’s bounty thanks to the Sahyadri hills of Western ghats. I reminisce about one such day trip from Pune to Lohagad wherein I contemplated if the Lohagad Fort trek would be as easy as they say it is.

About Lohagad Fort

Lohagad is one of the historical citadels situated on a hillock in the Lonavala region of Maharashtra.

Lohagad Fort is said to be one of the must-visit places in Maharashtra, especially for trekking enthusiasts.

Lohagad in Marathi translates to ‘Iron Fort’ and is backed by the rich history and architectural brilliance which makes it a favourite and a quick getaway for the students, IT professionals and BPO employees of Pune. Don’t get me wrong, others enjoy it equally!

Lohagad Fort divides the river basins of Indrayani and Pavna and is situated at an elevation of 1,033 meters above mean sea level.

Lohagad is connected to the neighbouring Visapur Fort which is on its eastern side. The fort is still intact and in a good condition as compared to many others in Maharashtra. Lohagad has been declared a protected monument by the Archeology Survey of India (ASI).

About Lohagad Fort

History of Lohagad Fort

The history of this fort is associated with the great Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji. Shivaji Maharaj had captured Lohagad in 1648 and it was handed over to Mughals in 1665 according to the Treaty of Purandar. After five years, the Marathas recaptured it in 1670 and it was used as storage to keep wealth.

It is believed that several other dynasties, such as Rashtrakutas, Nizamshahis, Yadavas, Chalukyas, Mughals, Bahamanis, Satavahanas , have used this fort for several purposes. This is the reason why the fort plays a prominent role in the history of Maharashtra.

Most forts in Maharashtra offer breathtaking views from the top after a hike. Read about Hike to Sinhagad Fort , a half-day trip from Pune that can be combined with a visit to Khadakwasla dam. The kanda bhajjis (onion fritters) are a must eat at Sinhagad fort.

Lohagad Fort Trek: My experience

4 friends on 2 bikes started from Pune on an early Saturday morning towards Lohagad via NH48. An hour into the ride and our stomachs already grumbled for some breakfast. We stopped in one of the roadside shacks selling ‘Chai’ and ‘Pohe’ overlooking the beautiful countryside. After the pit stop, we started again towards Kamshet.

The mundane highway traffic noise was rattled by high-speed bikers who zoomed past us.

It took us over 2 hours to cover the 55km stretch from Pune to Lohagad including the breakfast stop. We reached the Malavli village and upon asking the villagers (works so much better than GPS!), they guided us towards Lohagadwadi village. Lohagad Fort trek starting point is Malavali village for people coming by train and Lohagadwadi village for people on bikes/cars.

We came across the Gaimukh Khind exactly as the villagers had told us the directions and took a right turn towards Lohagadwadi. We promised ourselves to take a left turn soon so as to do the Visapur fort trek , next time.

A small parking area on the foothills near Lohagadwadi village makes it easy to keep the vehicles. It is possible for bikes to go up to the parking area near Bhaja caves. It is generally safe to park there. We found the stairs toward the end of the trekking trail, which would lead us straight to the fort.

500 Stairs to the top of Lohagad fort

We started on the first stairs at about 10:30 am and enquired from the visitors who had already descended the Lohagad fort steps and an enthusiastic guy replied ‘ About 500 EASY steps!

So we started climbing those easy steps breathing in the fresher air with every stair higher.

As we neared the top we came across four doors – the first one is called ‘Ganesh Darwaja’ which houses a broken shrine of Ganapati.

The second one is called ‘Narayan Darwaja’ which houses the shrine of Goddess Parvati postured in crossed legs.

The third one is called ‘Hanuman Darwaja’ which has Lord Hanuman carvings in a dilapidated state, probably because it is known to be the most ancient of all the doors in the fort.

The fourth one is called ‘Maha Darwaaja’ which has a wooden structure built in the Mughal style and the opposite of it houses the cenotaph dedicated to Aurangzeb.

Bhaja caves as seen during Lohagad fort trek

We crossed a room-like looking structure between the Narayan & Hanuman Darwaja. In the yesteryears, these were two godowns that were used for the storage purposes of ammunition. After entering the Maha Darwaja we came across an old mosque. Towards the right of Maha Darwaja, we came across ‘Laxmi Kothi’ which had many rooms. Two cannons are placed here.

We noticed that the entire Lohagad consisted of numerous structures, carvings and caves, some intact and some ruined.

The hill extended to the northwest to a fortified spur which is a 1500 meter long & 30 meters wide part of the mountain, separated from the main part. Viewing from the fort this area looks like a scorpion’s tail and hence it is called Vinchu Kata. This part of the fort acted as a watchtower to keep tabs on enemy activity and attack a launch if required.

We spent the early part of our afternoon and our grumbling stomach reminded us that we need food. The Lohagad fort trek does not have food stalls and the snacks and water that we carried were about to get over. So we decided to climb down and reach the base at 4 pm. We considered going to the nearby waterfalls but we were too tired and hungry and decided to pass it for next time.

All this trekking reminded me of trek to Triund hill .

I never heard of this place before but I’m so glad I came across your post. These photos are so lovely. I will have to add this to my never ending bucket-list. Hopefully when travel restrictions become normal again I will be able to experience this place myself one day.

Why do you go in Monsoon season? I have never experienced one, but it isn’t dangerous? I love the idea of a day with caves, waterfalls, biking and hiking.

Jamie, monsoon is huge in India as the rains make the waterfalls swell and makes the mountains green. It is only in the monsoon that we get rains so we really look forward to travelling in that season.

' src=

Wow, I loved the views of the River basins from the top of Lohagad. That must have been even better in person especially after biking for 2 hours and then trekking up 500 “easy” steps! That one gate view you captured is really beautiful. It always amazes me when you find structures in hard to reach or hidden areas that have such amazing architecture because that means great workers had to carry all of that up there & then build it!

' src=

I have fond memories from my time in Pune too, I miss the city so much! Lohagad was a trip we made often but never actually did the hike – too lazy for that! Wish I could go back now and do the hike though, it sounds amazing!

' src=

Wow, the fort really is stunning built into the rock like that! A bike ride sounds like the perfect way to start the day and get the blood flowing for the hike. And I can see what you mean about visiting during monsoon season. The surroundings really are so green and lush!

Thank you for such a detailed post! Saving it so I can refer to it when I plan a trip there, of course after the pandemic ends

Glad to know that Pooja. Lohagad is a lovely place with a short trek. I hope you have a good time, whenever you go!

Although there is a well-constructed road, there are many rough patches and steep turns. I have seen many experienced drivers struggling at those patches.

There are 2 different routes available from Pune. You have to take old Mumbai – Pune highway and head towards Lonavala. Just before the Lonavala, you will reach Malavli village. Take a left and then there will be a 6 km drive till the base. You can park your vehicle at Malavli village and start the trail from there.

There is a total of 22 ancient rock-cut caves and stupas built in the 2nd century and used by the Buddhist Monks. This place is very peaceful and far away from urbanization.

To go to this place you need to take a little detour from Bhaje waterfall. It’s around half km away from the main trail. It almost takes a half hour or so.

First view of Visapur fort

A small range connects Visapur Fort and Lohagad and divides the basins of the Indrayani River and Pavana River.

Visapur Fort is larger compared to Lohagad. You can visit both the forts in a single day.

During the Lohagad fort trek, you will come across the ‘Gaimukh Khind’. The left side route will take you to the Visapur Fort.

You can explore the fort and after spending an hour or so you can again come back and head towards the Lohagad Fort. This detour will take around 2 hours.

After reaching to the base of the Lohagad fort, take a rest for a while. Have your meal and then climbing around 350 rock steps you will reach the top of the Lohagad.

Precautions for Lohagad fort trek

You are going to come across our ancestors (thanks to Mr Darwin) during the trail. Yeah, monkeys. You don’t want the monkeys to steal your food, so avoid carrying any food or snacks in your hand. Beware of the monkeys. Yes, I mean it. Haha!

Wear a pair of good quality shoes, as there is lots of walking involved in this trail.

You will come across many waterfalls during the trail. The most famous one is Bhaje waterfall. And I will recommend you to enjoy the waterfall from a distance.

There are no protective bars at the edge of the cliffs. So stay away from the edge. The wind is so strong during the monsoon and it may cause an accident.

Tip for you:

If you are coming by train then there will be a huge crowd and you might not get a place to even stand up in the train.

What you can do is, get on the train which is heading towards the Lonavala from Pune. The same local will come back again to Pune, so you need not be worried about the seat. Thank me later!!

Lohagad fort trek is one of the best one-day treks near Pune and Mumbai . The trail is simple and straight forward. If you are looking for a quick escape from the busy city life then head towards the Lohagad fort. The complete trail is a long walk till the base of the fort. After climbing well-constructed steps, you will reach the top of the fort.

Lohagad Fort, Khandala Overview

Situated at the height of 3400 feet, Lohagad Fort is a UNESCO world heritage site and formidable fort about 52 kilometres away from Pune. Perched atop an impressive hill near Malavali, this destination is the perfect amalgam of ancient architecture and natural beauty. Lohagad Fort was built in the 18th century and is an ideal destination for trekking and nature lovers, especially from Pune and Mumbai. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj used to keep his treasury in this fort.

The trek to the fort is an easy one and perfect for the first-timers, making it a favourite haunt of hiking enthusiasts. In addition to its thrilling trek route, Lohagad Fort in itself is a massive structure that was once under the control of the mighty Maratha Empire and is connected to its twin Visapur Fort as well. Until a few years back, the base of the fort was quite far from the last point connected via road, but now a proper road has been built to the base of the fort, due to which a lot of people visit Lohagad during monsoon weekends, making it quite crowded. Whether you visit this destination for its lush green beauty, adventurous trekking route, panoramic views or illustrious history, Lohagad Fort is certainly worthy of a visit.

A Trek Worth Remembering - Lohagad Fort, Pune, India

Photo of Ashik Satheesh

I was in Pune for two weeks. There was a 3 day weekend coming up, and I had nothing to do. I started searching online to find out places worth visiting nearby, places that are not frequented by tourists, something historical, something worth my time. I came across a fort, called Lohagad (Iron Fort), which was pretty nearby and from what I read online, it was only a beginner’s trek. I had not trekked for a long time and my friend, who was to join me, had never trekked before. “Perfect”, I thought.

I found out from Google Maps that it lies on the Mumbai Pune Express Way. So boarding a bus from Wakad, the nearest stop from my hotel, sounded logical. We just had to get off at Malavli , the nearest point on the Express Way.

On the eve of May 1, my friend ditched me. Devastated I lay on bed that night, unsure of what to do. Slowly it dawned on me, that this is what I plan to do, to travel alone for the next one year. The world was giving me a trial run before I actually started. I decided to grab the opportunity, for if not this, I would never have the courage to carry out my other plans. And so, on the first of May 2015, after a slow breakfast, alone, I left my hotel, in search of Lohagad, a fort that I had only read online.

From Bus to Train

My trip started failing even before it started. After standing at the Wakad bus stop for nearly an hour, asking various buses, I realised that there is no bus stop at Malavli! “Was I going to have to drop my plan”, I stood there, thinking under the blazing sun. I had to choose an alternate means, the Indian Railways.

I pulled out my phone, searched for the route to the nearest station. It was almost noon. I bought half a kilogram of bananas and gulped a glass of sugarcane juice before I boarded a local passenger train, crowded as expected, but I couldn’t care less. Stopping at every other station, the train slowly moved into Malavli, and I got off.

Resting before the Show

I walked out of the station. I asked around for the route to the fort. I found a shed on my way, and decided to rest there before I started the long 6 or 7 kilometre walk. I ate few of my bananas, watching the village women wash their clothes. I lay on the bench, for an hour and then started walking.

Far away was my destination, a fort at the top of a mountain. The more I looked at the distance, the more uncertain I became. The scorching sun drank all my juices. With each step I took, the weaker and frightened I became. I kept my head low staring at my legs. I told them, “Think not of the distance, think only of the next step”, step after step and I keep moving forward.

Chaityagruha, Bhaja Caves

A short detour took me to these rock cut caves, called Bhaja Caves. It is a indeed something to behold, when you learn that these were built in the second century BC! These caves were used by Buddhists monks. The roof above the stupa is wood, lined under the rock. The room vibrated with an echo. Long ago there used to be monks praying, their voices resonating off the walls.

Looking out from Chaityagruha

The huge curved arches gave a beautiful border as you looked out.

Monk’s Residence

Besides the arched Chaityagruha are these small caves. These were the resting places for the monks. There are two beds inside each cave, carved out of rocks. Some had only one bed. Some even had windows carved.

From the Monk’s Veranda

I took a minute to sit in the monk’s veranda, carved out from the rock. Once upon a time there were monks sitting and looking out into the open.

There were even more stupas and caves as one walks over to the side. There is even a waterfall, though only the path remains during summer.

The Walk Continues

As beautiful as they were, it was not my destination. I descended from my detour and returned on my journey. The sun was killing me and I had another 6 KM or more to walk. I tried hitchhiking, but without luck. An old man explained to me that the fort will close by the time I reach there, and something else in Marati, which I did not understand. I smiled at him, thanked for the advice and kept walking.

Tired, I Stopped

I slowly walked in through one of the gigantic gates. These windows were once used by the defending army to launch their cannons at approaching armies. The village below looked beautiful.

And I reached the top! Step after step. I couldn’t believe myself. I did it. The obstacles I crossed, the fears I faced. “The journey is not about the destination, but the journey itself”, turned out to be true after all.

The hours of pain, my fatigue, everything vaporised there. No longer was I aware of my aching legs, or of the straps of my bag burying into my shoulders. I was being lifted by the wind. I felt the adrenaline rush through my blood and I forgot everything else.

The Girl and The Fort

Atop the fort lay another surprise. Here was this old rusted fort, with grass and moss growing all over. A place that I worked hard to reach. And there sat this beautiful girl, radiating in her bright beautiful colours, disinterested in all that was around her. It was so contrasting an image that I had to capture it. To that day, I had never asked a stranger, if I could take their photo, and the least, a young pretty girl. Knowingly and unknowingly, that day was a day of facing my fears. I summoned up my courage. I asked her. For me, it turned out to be one of my best captures :)

Looking Back

Over the years many armies have marched through these doors. This was my day.

Walking Down

I started my descent, caring not for my return journey. For I knew just as I found a way up, I will find a way down.

Leisurely Walk

As the sun slowly went down, taking with it its harsh heat, I leisurely walked down the road that I went up, smiling heartily.

The World Beckons!

Moon Rise over the Fort

Back in my room, laying in my bed typing this out, giving my body its hard earned rest, I look back. My expenses for the day amounted to Rs 300/- everything included. But the experience I had, priceless! I write this to remind you, that the aim of life is to live. Live your life! Face your fears. The feeling is amazing.

“ Star Trek : Discovery,” the flagship series of Paramount+ ‘s “Star Trek” universe, is heading toward its ending. The series, which premiered in 2017, will premiere its fifth and final season on April 4, closing the book on the adventures of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew.

Created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman, “Discovery” was a prequel to the groundbreaking original 1966 “Star Trek” series, taking place a decade before the adventures of Captain Kirk, Spock, and the other iconic characters — before then jumping ahead in time to the 32nd century. The series followed Burnham, initially a science specialist and officer aboard the USS Discovery, as she adventured with the crew on missions led by a rotating series of captains, including Gabriel Lorca (Jason Isaacs), and Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) before ultimately getting promoted to commander of the ship by the third season. Since the Season 2 finale, the Discovery, and the show, has jumped far ahead of time and now takes place in the 32nd century, where Burnham and the crew have worked to rebuild the Federation following the cataclysmic “Burn” event. Season 5 sees Burnham go on one last mission through the galaxy to uncover an ancient artifact with a mysterious power. Martin-Green leads the cast of “Discovery,” which also includes Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, Wilson Cruz , David Ajala, Blu del Barrio, and Callum Keith Rennie. Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise co-showrun the series, and executive produce with Martin-Green, Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth. CBS Studios produces the series in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

The first two episodes of “ Star Trek: Discovery ” season five will debut on Paramount+ starting April 4. The remainder of the 10-episode season will stream weekly on Thursdays, and the series finale will air on May 30. Watch the preview clip below.

Everything to Remember Before Star Trek: Discovery Returns for Its Final Season

As the show that launched star trek into the streaming age prepares for its long goodbye, here's everything you need to know heading into season 5..

Image for article titled Everything to Remember Before Star Trek: Discovery Returns for Its Final Season

This week, Star Trek: Discovery boldly goes for one final adventure . After years of waiting—and knowing that this fifth season would be its last—the Trek show that launched the franchise’s current renaissance will begin its victory lap. But before that, it has been a while since Discovery was last on our screens—so here’s everything important to remember.

The 32nd Century Is Here to Stay

Image for article titled Everything to Remember Before Star Trek: Discovery Returns for Its Final Season

This one depends on how long you’ve been away from Discovery , really, but I’m sure there’s someone out there intrigued by the final season of a Star Trek show who’s maybe either not watched since the early days or wants to jump in on the last leg. So, if that’s you ... well, go watch the rest of the show first. It has its moments.

But if you insist: Discovery has not been the pre-original- Trek show it started out as for a long while now. At the end of season two, the crew and the Discovery itself were flung far, far into the future in order to close the loop on a potential galaxy-ending threat that meant they could never return to their original timeline in the 23rd century. Ever since, they have been at the furthest point a Star Trek show has ever consistently gone to, even beyond the far future glimpsed in Enterprise ’s Temporal Cold War storyline: the 32nd century.

Things are, to be clear, not 100% great at this moment in time, state of the galaxy-wise. Before Discovery showed up, the Federation’s myriad member worlds and Starfleet had been completely torn apart by a cataclysmic event called “The Burn,” the simultaneous detonation of dilithium across known space which rendered warp travel—and thus the existence of interstellar society as it had existed for over a thousand years—extremely difficult.

Discovery helped solve that problem, slowly but surely allowing Starfleet to rebuild, but not before it faced another cataclysmic threat called the Dark Matter Anomaly, or DMA, a not-so-random “random” gravitational event that kept showing up and destroying entire worlds in storms of debris and chaos. Turns out the DMA was actually the product of an extra-galactic race known only as the Ten-C, which, once again, Discovery helped solve the problem with after successfully making First Contact with the beings. Hopefully things calm down a bit in terms of existence-threatening cataclysms in season five!

Speaking of that, Discovery ’s fourth season climaxed with both Earth and Ni’Var—the rechristened homeworld of the Vulcans and Romulans, who have been re-united as sibling peoples by the 32nd century—under the direct threat of the DMA, necessitating the almost total-evacuation of the worlds as they faced destruction from showers of debris. Thanks to Captain Burnham and the Discovery crew’s intervention, the DMA was stopped just before all this happened—and most of the populations of Earth and Ni’Var, but not all of them, had been evacuated by Starfleet.

We don’t know quite how much time has passed between the events of season four and five (it’s been over two years in reality, hence why you’re reading this catchup post), but don’t be surprised if at least some of this doesn’t get mentioned in early episodes as the universe and our heroes continue to deal with the ramifications. One of which being...

Earth Is Joining the Federation (Again)

Image for article titled Everything to Remember Before Star Trek: Discovery Returns for Its Final Season

One of the final scenes of Discovery ’s fourth season saw Captain Burnham and various Federation dignitaries play host to the arrival of the President of United Earth—as the world seeks to rejoin the Federation, as a show of thanks for Starfleet’s aid during the DMA crisis. It turns out that after the events of the Burn in the time between Discovery season two and three, Earth was one of the first member worlds to secede from the Federation, transforming itself into an isolationist, inward-looking, paranoid militaristic society that remained increasingly skeptical of the Federation’s capacity to survive over the course of seasons three and four. At least, until it got to see first-hand what unity and co-operation could still do in this changed and put-upon galaxy.

Also, this probably won’t come up in season five, but we should note that the President of United Earth who engages in this process to rejoin the Federation is played by famous Georgia Democrat (and avowed Trekkie) Stacey Abrams . Please do not try to think about squaring that with everything I just said about United Earth’s political attitudes, because Discovery sure as hell didn’t.

Michael and Book Are Parting... But Not for Long

Image for article titled Everything to Remember Before Star Trek: Discovery Returns for Its Final Season

One of the more emotional fallouts of season four’s plot with the DMA was the anomaly’s destruction of the planet Kwejian—the homeworld of Cleveland “Book” Booker, played by David Ajala, the smuggler turned paramour of Captain Burnham over the course of Discovery ’s third and fourth seasons. The loss of his home drove Book to surreptitiously betray Burnham and Starfleet to work with the rogue scientist Ruon Tarka, as they worked on a way to completely dissipate the DMA even after its true nature and extragalactic origins were discovered.

Booker saw the light by the end of the season, and nearly died in the process alongside Tarka, but after being saved by the Ten-C he turned himself over to the Federation to pay for siding with Tarka—pulling from Burnham’s side and from the home he’d made with her on Discovery , and assigned to community service, aiding Federation relief efforts on Europa for families impacted by the DMA’s fallout.

Good for You, Saru

Image for article titled Everything to Remember Before Star Trek: Discovery Returns for Its Final Season

Speaking of romantic dalliances, season four played up a lingering connection between Michael’s trusted friend and first officer, Saru, and Ambassador T’Rina, Ni’Var’s representative to the Federation—and after much invites to tea and will-they-won’t-they, finally made their feelings for each other clear in the finale of season four. Presumably that means we’ll get to see a lot more of the pair together in the final season—and the interesting romantic struggles of what happens when a senior officer on a starship and a Federation ambassador start courting. Hopefully there’s a happy ending for our put-upon Kelpian hero.

One of Discovery ’s Most Unique Technologies Is No More

Image for article titled Everything to Remember Before Star Trek: Discovery Returns for Its Final Season

One of the major technological aspects of Discovery introduced from the very beginning was its use of a “Spore Drive”—an unprecedented method of FTL travel that allowed the ship to avoid typical warp travel and issues and instead navigate its way along a mycelial network across subspace, allowing everything from long range travel to precise realspace jumping across. The Spore Drive made Discovery unique as a ship, both in its original time when the technology was first being secretly developed and even far into the 32nd century—especially after the events of the Burn made regular long-distance FTL through warp drives impossible at scale.

But during the events of season four’s finale, both the known Spore Drives in existence—the Discovery ’s and the one implemented into Book’s ship—were sacrificed in the attempt to stop Dr. Tarka’s plans to destroy the DMA. Discovery still has traditional warp drives as a back up for the Spore Drive, but still, the loss of what became a key defining part of Discovery ’s worldbuilding will no doubt come up in season five.

Tilly’s Back

Image for article titled Everything to Remember Before Star Trek: Discovery Returns for Its Final Season

The beloved former cadet (now Lieutenant JG, by the time of season four) Sylvia Tilly shocked Discovery fans when she seemingly left the show early into the last season , when she took an offered teaching position at the re-building Starfleet Academy. While Tilly was absent for much of season four, she did return for the finale, helping Starfleet command in the evacuation of Earth, and celebrated with her former crewmates. Just how and why remains to be seen, but we do known from Tilly actress Mary Wiseman that she does indeed return to the Discovery during season five, but whatever happens, it may not be the last of Tilly we see, even as the show ends, because...

The Journey Never Ends

Image for article titled Everything to Remember Before Star Trek: Discovery Returns for Its Final Season

Star Trek ’s future is wide open right now , as the franchise navigates the ends of Discovery and Picard and looks to a future that balances together streaming shows, made-for-streaming movies like Section 31 and a potential Picard continuation, and multiple attempts to bring Trek back to theatrical superstardom. But one key part of that is crucial to Discovery : its exploration of the 32nd century won’t end when it does.

The one brand-new show we know is definitely still part of Trek ’s future at the moment is Starfleet Academy , set to begin filming this year, and will follow the prestigious institute during the 32nd century time period, rather than going back to the Trek eras established in other shows. That’s all we know at this point—we don’t know if Mary Wiseman could potentially be a key star for the series, or anyone else affiliated with Discovery , or even which students will be the focus of the series. But it does mean that even as Discovery bids farewell, the world it has established will keep boldly going beyond it.

Star Trek: Discovery season five premieres April 4 on Paramount+.

Leonard nimoy quizzes star trek fans about spock's wrath of khan death.

In a resurfaced video from 1982, Leonard Nimoy chats with Star Trek fans who have just watched Spock die in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

  • Fans in 1982 overwhelmingly believed that Spock would not remain dead after Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
  • Leonard Nimoy's positive experience filming Wrath of Khan led him to reconsider his decision to leave the Star Trek franchise.
  • Spock's death in Wrath of Khan was intended to be permanent, but fans' reactions prompted changes to set the stage for his return.

Soon after the release of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , Leonard Nimoy took to the streets to quiz fans about Spock's death. Widely regarded as one of Star Trek's best films, The Wrath of Khan premiered in 1982 and set a world record for its first-day box office gross. Star Trek II saw the return of former Earth dictator Khan Noonien-Singh (Ricardo Montalbán), who had made his first appearance in Star Trek: The Original Series season 1, episode 22, "Space Seed." After Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) marooned Khan and his followers on a desolate planet, he mistakenly believed he'd seen the last of them.

As Kirk and Khan face off in the climax of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , Khan is fatally wounded in a space battle with the Starship Enterprise, but he activates the powerful Genesis Device before he dies. Spock then exposes himself to lethal amounts of radiation to repair the warp drive and allow the Enterprise to escape the blast from the Genesis Device. After Spock's sacrifice, the crew mourns his death and sends his casket into space where it lands on the Genesis Planet. The Wrath of Khan left just enough hints about Spock's potential return that many moviegoers at the time never believed the Vulcan would remain dead.

Every Star Trek Movie Ranked (From Worst To Best)

Leonard nimoy hilariously quizzes star trek fans about spock's wrath of khan death, even in 1982, few star trek fans believed spock would stay dead..

In a resurfaced video from 1982, Leonard Nimoy asks Star Trek fans who have just watched The Wrath of Khan whether they believe his character Spock is truly dead . Despite having no knowledge of what would come next, nearly every fan believes that Spock will return. Two different fans speculate that Spock could be "reborn like the [Genesis] planet" since his casket landed on the planet's surface. Another says that Spock will likely return for the fourth film, but not the third. Watch the video, shared by Jon W. @rarefilmm on X (formerly Twitter), below:

Several of the moviegoers featured in the video were later proven right when Star Trek III: The Search for Spock premiered in 1984. Spock was largely absent from Star Trek: III , as Admiral Kirk and his crew worked to reunite Spock's katra (or soul) with his body. As those fans speculated, Spock's body was reborn on the Genesis Planet, although that was only part of his regeneration. Before his death, Spock had stored his katra within the mind of Dr. Leonard McCoy (DeForest Kelley), and the two parts had to be reunited. While some of the fans were not quite as accurate with their predictions, it's fun to see how fans reacted to Spock's death in Wrath of Khan at the time.

Why Spock Died In Star Trek II & Why Nimoy Brought Him Back

Wrath of khan reinvigorated nimoy's love of star trek & spock..

After the end of Star Trek: The Original Series , Leonard Nimoy felt like he was finished with the character of Spock. When plans began for another Trek series, Nimoy was largely uninterested, although he later signed on to make Star Trek: The Motion Picture . Despite Star Trek: The Motion Picture' s box office success , it was wildly over budget and failed to meet the expectations of Paramount Studios. Nimoy did not enjoy his experience in the first Star Trek movie, and Spock's death was meant to be permanent for Leonard to exit the franchise. Nimoy, however, reportedly had such a good time making Wrath of Khan with director Nicholas Meyer that he began to consider doing more Star Trek .

Having become excited to play Spock again, Nimoy suggested that he could also direct Star Trek: III.

Star Trek II' s scene of Spock transferring his katra to Dr. McCoy and the final shot of his casket on the Genesis Planet were added to leave the possibility open for Spock to return. Nicholas Meyer was not pleased with these changes and declined to return to direct the sequel. Having become excited to play Spock again, Nimoy suggested that he could also direct Star Trek: III , and the rest, as they say, is history. Looking back, it's difficult to imagine what Star Trek would have become if Spock had stayed dead after Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , and we're glad Nimoy had a change of heart about returning. Leonard Nimoy certainly had a good time polling moviegoers about Spock's death.

"Star Trek: Discovery" final season premieres Thursday on Paramount+

Zoe Saldaña Is Holding Out Hope For 'Star Trek 4'

Gamora may be gone, but the same can't be said for Uhura.

The Big Picture

  • Zoe Saldaña still has hope for a Star Trek sequel and believes there is room for multiple projects to coexist in the franchise.
  • With Paramount+ expanding the Star Trek universe, the future of Star Trek 4 remains uncertain but possibilities are endless.
  • The alternate timeline in Abrams' universe allows for creative storytelling and potential crossovers with Paramount+ characters.

Zoe Saldaña has lent her name to many franchises in her time but still has an appreciation for one in particular. On “The Discourse” podcast, the actor maintained support for the Star Trek sequel that has been in development for some time . The origins of Captain Kirk were rebooted in the 2009 film by J.J. Abrams with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto in the roles of Kirk and Spock. Subsequent films varied in critical reception, but the desire for a fourth film in the franchise has not waned.

“I still have hope,” Saldaña stated, who played Uhura in the reboot films. “I had a wonderful experience through and through and through the three times that I was a part of that team.”

The rise of Paramount+ has paved a path for many Star Trek projects outside of feature films. As Saldaña notes, this could complicate Star Trek 4 , going forward. Must-watch Trek shows such as Strange New Worlds have cast their own versions of Kirk ( Paul Wesley ) and Spock ( Ethan Peck ), as they traverse the stars in the Enterprise. But the Guardians of the Galaxy actor believes there is room for everyone in the Star Trek galaxy.

“I know that they’re always trying to sort of aim to wrangle everybody together, but I also know that Paramount is working on a new sort of fresh take on ‘Star Trek,’ which I think is such a wonderful franchise that should live for a very long time, whether or not us as the original remake cast can come back. I don’t know, but I certainly hope so.”

Star Trek 4 is still up in the air, but there could be a timeline where all Trek projects could co-exist in harmony. Just like the United Federation would want.

'Star Trek 4' Can Still Operate In An Alternate Universe

It has been almost a decade since the third film in the franchise, Star Trek Beyond , premiered. The movie could have been a satisfying conclusion to the series as all the characters come together in unity. The film would also be the final entry for Anton Yelchin , who died at 27 after an auto incident at his home. Preserving without Chekov would undoubtedly be a sad undertaking.

But if the principal actors want to reunite with the great Captain Kirk and honor their former co-star, there are ways to implement that reality. Abrams’ universe has the benefit of operating under an alternate timeline. This decision was a clever way for the new film to be unafraid to disrupt canonical events of the past half-century. With a new timeline, films can make any decision as well as explain the potential absence of Chekov.

This is also how the franchise can operate in conjunction with the Paramount+ universe of characters. And who knows? Maybe more films can make way for a Trek crossover in the future. While viewers wait for news on Stark Trek 4 , they can watch the previous reboot films streaming on Paramount+.

The brash James T. Kirk tries to live up to his father's legacy with Mr. Spock keeping him in check as a vengeful Romulan from the future creates black holes to destroy the Federation one planet at a time.
