Planning To Travel To the UK? Here's A Checklist For Indian Travellers

If you are planning to travel to the uk from india, you need to plan for a series of tests that you will need to take..

Planning To Travel To the UK? Heres A Checklist For Indian Travellers

The UK Government, in wake of the rising cases of the Delta variant of Coronavirus had enforced stronger curbs through a traffic light system for entry from overseas. They continue to have three bands with different sets of regulations; Red, Amber and Green. Until August 8, the UK government kept India on the Red List. Only British and Irish nationals, or those with residence rights were allowed to enter. This essentially means that travel was not permitted for Indian nationals so far.

On August 8th, starting 4 am, UK removed India from the Red List and placed it in the amber, opening up travel to non-residents and easing some of the curbs imposed earlier. However, while this is good news for those looking to travel to the UK, there is still a list of Dos and Don'ts you need to keep in mind.

Not all the rules are the same if you are traveling to Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland. So, check for local rules before you book those tickets.

Want to travel to theUK? Here's a guide

If you are planning to travel to the UK, you will have to plan ahead for the series of tests that you will need to undertake. The 10-day quarantine for travellers is mandatory unless you are fully vaccinated under the UK or US vaccination programmes.

You need to get a test 3 days before your departure. An RT-PCR test report is valid and can be displayed in the form of a print-out, a digital report or a message, as long as it is in English. You need to take the test even if you are fully vaccinated.

Arrival in the UK without a negative COVID test attracts a fine of GBP 500.

Children aged below 10, those travelling on medical emergencies are exempted from the COVID test. There is an additional list of exemptions that you can refer to before you book a test.

British and Irish nationals, however, are not exempted from the test.

You also need to fill a Passenger Locator Form before you travel.

You also need to book in advance, tests to be taken after your arrival in the UK.

What to do once you are in UK?

Even though, arrivals from countries on the Amber List no longer need to fulfil the 10-day quarantine, both Covishield and Covaxin are not officially on the list yet.

Traveling To Karnataka? Latest Guidelines You Need To Know

On arrival in the UK, you need to take two COVID-19 tests, one on the second day after arrival and one or after the eighth day. This is for those who aren't fully vaccinated.

If you are fully vaccinated (under the UK and US programmes), you still need to take a COVID test on or before day 2 of your arrival.

Those on the Amber List don't need to book a managed quarantine facility any longer.

You need to quarantine for 10 days at your planned place of residence. Your day of arrival is counted as Day 0.

Travellers who are below 18 years of age on the date of arrival in the UK are exempted from the 10-day quarantine.

What to know if your travel to the UK is less than 10 days

There is a minor difference in the rules if you are travelling to UK for less than 10 days. You will still need to quarantine for the entire duration of the stay, and book tests for the second and eighth day in advance, before your arrival. You can choose not to take the second test if you leave the country before the eighth day.

London Packing List: What to Pack for London and the UK at any time of year

Last updated: October 19, 2023 . Written by Laurence Norah - 29 Comments

We’ve spent a great deal of time travelling throughout the UK, plus we’ve taken many trips to London, a city we love to visit. I even lived in London for a number of years.

There’s so much to see and do in London that we find ourselves returning time and again for new adventures – everything from seeking out Harry Potter sites to hitting the Winston Churchill trail .

Based on our experiences, we wanted to put together a guide to what to pack for London, to help you when planning what to bring.

This London packing list will also work for visiting other cities and parts of the UK and is designed for visiting London and the UK any time of year, with some items being more required in winter or summer, and noted as such.

London Packing List - London from St Pauls

The climate does not vary too greatly across the country, although it is usually a little cooler as you get further north, especially up into northern Scotland.

The key thing with travelling in the UK is to be prepared for anything. The weather in the UK is famous for being fickle, and weather forecasts are notoriously unreliable.

So even in summer you can expect cold, grey days, whilst winter can provide unexpected sunshine and even a little warmth!

Now we’re going to go through our packing list in some detail, after which you’ll find a checklist so you don’t forget anything!

London Packing List

1. clothing.

Generally, for cities in the UK you will find that folks will tend to be fairly well dressed, so you will likely want to pack your nicer looking clothes – although you don’t need to be super dressy for most occasions.

Just bear in mind that if your travel plans include fine dining, nice bars or trips to shows like the opera or the west end then you might want to bring some smarter clothes.

I normally pack a button-up shirt and a light cotton jacket whilst Jess will pack a smart dress.

Clothes for London in Winter

When we travel to London in winter, we usually wear jeans or pants and Jess will wear layers with a warm sweater  like this on top ,  while I will usually have a shirt and a fleece .

We will also both wear a warm winter coat . A warm scarf and good gloves are also essential winter items for London!

In terms of gloves, there are a number of options on the market. These are a good pair specifically designed for photography, with a warm merino wool lining and magnetic finger caps, and are the pair that I own.

However, you’ll find plenty of gloves to choose from if you don’t need a photography specific pair. Our main suggestion is to get a pair with touchscreen capability so you don’t need to take them off to use your phone when navigating or looking up information.

For scarves, we love our cashmere scarves as they are really warm and look great, you can get them for women here and for men here . We have a guide to travel scarves here if you need some more inspiration!

If you suffer from the cold, you will also likely want a warm hat .

Clothes for London in Summer

For visiting London in summer, Jess will usually bring along a pair of pants, capris, and have a light dress with a shoulder wrap to wear depending on the weather.

I usually wear jeans, although on the odd rare hot day I can find that jeans become uncomfortably hot to walk in sometimes, so I will also pack light pants or shorts. For bright days (they do happen, we promise!), you’ll also likely want a pair of sunglasses .

The key thing for either time of year is to bring a series of clothing you can layer so you can adjust to the climate accordingly.

As mentioned at the beginning of the post, if you are doing anything more formal such as a nice afternoon tea at a nice hotel, you should definitely check the dress code in advance so you are prepared.

You are unlikely to need outdoor gear such as hiking pants or boots for your London trip, although if you are heading out to the countryside for a little while, (perhaps following one of our UK itineraries ), then a good pair of hiking pants will likely be a good addition to your UK packing list.

London packing list - Laurence and Jessica in front of tower bridge london

A decent pair of shoes can make or break a holiday. You’re going to be doing a fair bit of walking as you explore the UK and her cities, and the last thing you want is sore feet or blisters.

Recently, we’ve been loving travelling in our Allbirds shoes (see our detailed Allbirds review here ). For cool weather, we like the Allbirds Wool Runner Mizzles , and for warmer weather the Allbirds Tree Runners . The Tree Runners are the most comfortable travel shoes I’ve ever worn, even in very hot weather exploring hot European cities in summer.

india to uk travel checklist

Of course, sometimes you want something a little bit smarter. In that case, I have a pair of Timberland shoes that I love.

They are dressy enough for a night out or a nice meal, but also comfortable enough for walking in all day. They’re also 100% waterproof, which can be a real benefit, as rain showers can happen at any time in the UK!

For slightly more formal situations, Jess loves her versatile black Rockport shoes. Whatever shoes Jess wears though, she finds she suffers from arch pain, probably because of high arches. After a lot of research, we settled on these cool insoles , which have solved that problem.

For more shoe tips, check out our guide to the best travel shoes for men and the best travel shoes for women for tips on picking a great pair to travel in.

3. Toiletries / Make up

Naturally you’re going to want to bring your toiletries with you on your trip to London!

You don’t need much different for London and the UK than anywhere else, so just remember your essentials – toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, moisturizer, travel razor and any make-up or sanitary products that you might need.

Of course, all these things are easily available to buy in the UK as well, although as brands might differ slightly, if there is a product you love from home it is best to bring it with you to be sure. If you are on any medication, you should definitely bring this as well.

We’d also advise sunscreen for travel in the summer months, and a good Chapstick for travel in winter as the cold winter air can very quickly dry out your lips which isn’t fun.

Travel Safety Razor Leaf Razor

4. Electronic Gear

The UK uses a 220v three pin system, so if you’re travelling from nearly anywhere else in the world you are going to need a travel adapter. We normally use an adapter like this  and then pair it with an extension setup like this , which gives us all the plugs and USB ports we need to charge our all devices.

Note that if you are travelling to England from the USA, which uses a 110v system, not all your equipment will work.

Most laptops, phones and cameras will be fine, but in our experience, many hair dryers, curling irons, and hair straighteners don’t support dual voltages. You can check on the plug or in the manual to find out.

Jess has a dual voltage hair dryer and a dual voltage hair straightener  for just this reason.

See more on travel adapters and how to choose one for your trip in our guide to the best travel adapters .

You will also of course want your smartphone. If you have an unlocked phone, the cheapest way to get online will be to pick up a SIM card on arrival, or if you want to be fully prepared you can order one in advance . SIM cards are easy to come by in the UK and data is cost effective.

See our advice on getting online when you travel for tips on the best options.

If you’re thinking of a new smartphone for your trip, check our guide to the best cameras for travel , which has a section on smartphones that are good for travel and taking photos.

We would also recommend you travel with an external powerpack to keep everything charged, and a set of decent noise cancelling headphones can be a life saver if you want to watch a movie or listen to a bit of music.

If you like to read, you may also want to travel with a table or e-reader like a Kindle . For most trips you probably won’t need a laptop, but of course if you find it easier to travel with a laptop or tablet then bring one by all means!

MyTravelPal Travel Adaptor

5. Photography Gear

London is a very photogenic city (see my guide to the best photography locations here for some ideas), so you’re definitely going to want to bring some kind of photography gear with you on your trip. Even if that’s just a smartphone!

Our photography setup is likely overkill for most, but if you want to get the best photos, then we advise investing in a dedicated camera and ideally a tripod. See our guide to why you need a tripod for suggestions on the best travel tripods.

We also travel with a selfie stick to get nice photos of the two of us together if we don’t want have time or space to set up the tripod.

Don’t forget when travelling with your camera to bring a few accessories. We’d advise spare batteries, spare memory cards, a UV filter for the lens, and a decent bag or case to keep it all safe. If you don’t get a dedicated camera bag, a camera insert  that goes inside your daypack or carry-on is a wise investment.

We also travel with a number of large Ziploc bags which can be really handy to put electronics and wet clothes in should the weather turn bad.

india to uk travel checklist

6. Luggage & Backpacks

Picking the right luggage for you is a big decision. The right bag should last you for many years of travel, and suit your particular style – be that carry-on only or checked luggage.

We travel with a fair amount of gear, so we invariably have one checked bag each, and then one piece of hand luggage which has our high value items in. One tip I learnt from my mum’s years of travel wisdom is to split our belongings across our two checked bags – that way if one of them doesn’t make it, we still both have clothes!

For my camera and electronic gear, I currently use a Vanguard Alta Sky 49 , which works well as both a carry-on and a day pack. Prior to that, I used an Osprey day pack with a camera insert, which was also super comfortable.

Jess loves her Eagle Creek bags , and has both a carry-on sized backpack and a larger wheeled backpack that we check-in. For a long time my main checked bag was an Osprey Sojourn 60 . This travelled with me from 2013 until 2021 through multiple countries and countless baggage handlers, and never let me down.

Currently though, we travel with two main checked bags. We have a Level8 trunk bag , and a Delsey Hardside bag . We picked luggage with four spinner wheels as it’s honestly so much easier to move around, and both these bags have survived the rigours of travel very well, including a five week African safari, which is tough on any bag!

If you’re in the market for a new bag, we have no hesitation recommending Eagle Creek , Osprey , Level8 , Delsey and Vanguard as great choices.

7. Reusable Water Bottle

We highly recommend bringing a reusable bottle for water with you so you can fill it in sinks and water fountains and not need to pay for drinks or purchase bottled water. Tap water across the UK is safe to drink, so there’s no need to spend money on water.

If you need to get a water bottle for your trip, we personally like the Klean Kanteen bottles like these .

We have a few different sizes and find the anti-leak lids and easy washability make them perfect for travel. You’ll be saving money and creating less plastic waste, which is always a good thing!

8. Miscellaneous

Obviously, there are a few items you need to bring with you when travelling to the UK, such as your passport. Depending on where you are coming from, you might also need proof of onward travel, a visa, and proof of funds for your time in the UK.

Check the UK government website here to get an idea of what documentation you might need.

We’d also advise having a note of your hotel address available in non-electronic format, as you may need this during immigration proceedings.

Beyond the documentation requirements, don’t forget all the cables for your electronic devices. You are unlikely to need a towel for travel in London and the UK unless you are staying in particularly budget accommodation like backpacker hostels or some of the more budget hotel options that charge for add-ons like towels.

We would recommend you bring a  travel umbrella  or a travel poncho – these can be very useful in London and the UK as rain can happen at pretty much any time! You can also buy these at many shops in London although the quality might not stand the test of time.

If you would like to keep track of your adventures, we also recommend bringing along a travel journal. We always journal our travels so we can remember what we have seen and done. See our guide to the best travel journals for some ideas.

For London, we can also recommend the Streetwise Map , which is handy for helping you get around. We also recommend a physical guidebook, either the latest Rick Steves London guide , or the Lonely Planet London guide .

Thank you for your blog! We leave next week for 3 week driving tour in UK, & then 1 week in London (car-less) before returning to US. We are bringing iPad & iPhone, Roku streaming stick for evening Prime Video/Netflix/YouTubeTV in the airbnbs, & wired adapter(lightning to hdmi) to connect to bigger screens when they are available. What should we buy/bring to adapt those items for UK use? Thanks!

23rd April 2022 at 3:17 pm

So all you should need is some kind of adaptor to convert a US plug socket to a UK plug socket, also known as a travel adaptor. I have a guide to travel adaptors here , but most people opt for something simple like this .

I say should because in my experience most lower power electronics like iPads, iPhones and laptops are already capable of handling the voltage difference. As you probably know, the UK uses 220-240v power, whilst the US uses 110-120v. If you look on the plug or adaptor for the device, it should tell you what the input voltage if accepts is. If it’s in the range of 100v – 250v, or therabouts, it should be fine. However, if it’s fixed around 110 – 120v, it will not work and would in fact be dangerous to try plugging it in to a higher voltage output.

Other than the power adaptor so you can charge your devices, the rest should work fine. HDMI and USB ports are the same around the world, so that should all just work as expected.

Let me know if this makes sense or if I can help any more, and have a great trip to the UK!

hello is it ok to bring cooked from in a container from India ie chicken curry on a flight.

29th November 2021 at 11:23 pm

This might be possible, but it will depend on the quantity of the food and also whether it is very liquid, in which case it may be classified as a liquid which has to then meet the airline requirements. If in doubt, it’s best to reach out to the airline. In addition, if you plan to bring it into the UK you will need to check the regulations in the UK as to what you are allowed to bring in.

Have a great trip to London!

Hi, I’m going to London the last week of September and first week of October, how heavy of a coat should I take. I’ll be in Paris the first week of October. Thanks

31st May 2021 at 8:27 pm

Hi Elyonda! Great question. I’d say a medium size coat. At that time of year you’re looking at temperatures probably between 12C (53F) and 20C (68F). So it shouldn’t be too cold, however rain is always a possibility. So I’d recommend a waterproof coat but it shouldn’t need to be too thick 🙂

Have a great trip!

I booked a visit to London for end of summer 2020, this site is very helpful & informative, so thank you for that. I am a huge fan of the band Queen & plan to seek out any & every place associated with them that I can find while I’m there. Would love it if you could add a link among your other places of interest that would include “A guide to all things Queen related”. I don’t want to miss a thing on my once in a lifetime trip to London.

Thanks very much for your comment 🙂 I do like the band Queen, but I am definitely not an expert! However, if you search for Queen locations in London, a number of helpful results come up which should help in your search 🙂

FB Messaged you: First-time overseas travelers going to Scotland and England (Edinburgh area and London) in late July-August. Saw USA Today article regarding attire that said, “First, unless the sun shines and the temperature rises into the 80s, it’s fairly rare to find an Englishman in shorts. However, schoolboys under age 13 may wear long shorts with knee-high socks all year-round, typically as part of a school uniform.” Fine for Englishmen but what about male tourists? Or female tourists for that matter? Do they wear shorts? Thanks! Betsy Kerr

27th March 2019 at 5:18 pm

You’re welcome to wear shorts whenever you like! I’m not sure that USA Today article is exactly representative of reality today 😉 If it’s a warm day, we wear shorts over here too. It’s just not warm as often as we’d like, and shorts aren’t something you would see as business attire, but certainly, if you’re on holiday shorts are perfectly acceptable attire!

Just wondering about the travel adapter and extension. Coming from the US to the UK will I need a power converter to bring the power down from 220v to 120v or will a travel adapter and power strip work?

5th January 2019 at 10:52 am

So it really depends on your electronics. In our experience, most smaller electronics like laptops, camera chargers and so on are rated for both 110v and 220v, so all you would need is the adapter and power strip. However, you definitely need to check each device – the voltage it accepts will be written on the charger part somewhere.

Higher power devices usually are not dual voltage, in our experience this includes things like hair dryers and straightening irons. There are travel versions of these devices available which support two voltages, but it’s not a standard.

Usually a power convertor isn’t necessary, and in our experience they tend to be fairly bulky, so best avoided if possible – it’s best to get a travel version of the device instead in our opinion if one exists.

Hope this helps!

India's entry requirements differ depending on your nationality and the reason for your visit. If you're not an Indian national, you will usually need a visa to enter the country, which you should get before you travel.

For more information and advice, contact the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs and visit the  FRRO website

If you’re planning on returning to India within two months of your last visit, you will need special permission from a local Mission Post or Embassy (such as the Indian High Commission in London). Without this permission you could be denied entry, and returned to your country of origin at your own expense.

For non vaccinated travellers

With the increase in Covid-19 cases globally, the Ministry of Civil Aviation in India in coordination with Ministry of Health & Family Welfare introduced from 10:00am 24th December 2022 random Covid-19 testing on arrival. These include thermal screening and 2% of arriving passengers on each flight will be selected randomly to undergo a RT-PCR test.

Pre departure forms

Routes where face masks onboard must be worn:

For all services operating to or from the United States, where the federal mask mandate on aircraft has been extended until 18 April, customers aged 2 and above must still maintain masks at all times, unless exempt.

For the following routes to or from the UK, masks are still required for customers aged 12 and above until further notice:  Islamabad, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Lahore, Lagos. There are some exemptions that apply to the wearing of face masks or face coverings:

  • If you can't put on, wear, or remove a face covering without severe distress, or due to any physical or mental illness or impairment, or disability (within the meaning of section 6 of the Equality Act 2010)
  • If you're travelling with, or providing assistance to, another person who relies on lip reading to communicate
  • Children 11 and under  unless  you are travelling to/from the US*

Spraying in the cabin

The process of disinsection is required by WHO (World Health Organisation) and local health authorities to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, e.g. Malaria.

On our Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru routes, we spray the inside of the aircraft with insecticides, which is recommended under the WHO based on their safety and effectiveness.

The spray we use onboard is Phenothrin (1R-trans phenothrin), which dissipates within a few minutes after being sprayed in the cabin.

Our cabin crew will make an onboard announcement when the spraying of insecticides is about to take place. We encourage customers to use this opportunity to cover their nose, eyes and mouth if they wish to do so.

India packing list: what to pack for india in 2024.

Bradley Williams

Knowing how to pack for India is actually a pretty tough task, and one that we first struggled with.

There are all kinds of questions probably racing through your head, such as …

“What can I wear in India as a woman tourist?”

“Is there a dress code in India for tourists?”

“Can males and females wear shorts in India?”

Their relatively strict and reserved religious culture means that the dress code in India certainly won't be quite as laid back as it is in the western world.

You also need to take into account other important things such as the time of year and the many diverse climates that India has.

To help put your mind at ease and help you know exactly what to pack for India, I’ve gone ahead and put together the ultimate India packing list .

Filled with all the tips & tricks we picked up on when backpacking in India .

Let's get started!

Travel insurance tip

Before traveling anywhere, make sure you have your travel insurance in place. We recommend SafetyWing. ‍

Here's a few reasons ...

  • They Cover for Covid-19
  • You can pause and restart policies each month
  • They are more affordable than many providers

For more info, check out my in-depth SafetyWing review .

Ultimate India travel packing checklist

Men's packing list, women's packing list, travel essentials, tech/gadgets, health & safety, miscellaneous, other items to consider, a few things you need to know about india.

Here are 3 key things you need to first be aware of before you start packing your bags and heading off abroad for an epic trip across India.

1. Religion in India

Just like Bali , and many other places throughout Asia, the dominant religion in India is Hinduism, with roughly 80% of the population claiming to be so.

People tend to dress more conservatively than in western countries, though they are certainly not the strictest of religions.

Yes, you will typically see women covering up more of their bodies (particularly their legs) but they do still have skin on show.

Many women have parts of their back open and many locals even have parts of their cleavage and stomachs showing, no matter what age they are.

Religion and dress code in India becomes more important when visiting religious sites.

Here, it is more respectful if you have some way to cover up.

Cazzy always carries some sort of light shawl with her so she can cover up the rest of her arms if required.

She typically always had on a long, light dress that covered up more than enough and didn’t offend.

On a side note, if you are a female tourist in India, then you will get stared at a LOT by locals, particularly the men.

As she's from Ireland , Cazzy is naturally very white and really stands out.

So if you have a lot of skin on show then you are just encouraging more people to stare at you in an uncomfortable manner.

2. Geography of India

India is HUGE!

It’s more than 3 million square kilometres and home to more than 1.3 billion people; roughly 13 times the size of the UK.

As such, you can expect it to have an incredibly varied climate depending on which part of the country you visit.

On our visit, we went as far south as Goa and as far north as Delhi & Agra , so were able to experience many of the changes.

As a very rough guide, the further north you get, it tends to get a little cooler, whereas Goa in the south is much hotter.

This is a VERY rough idea and not totally accurate as your experiences of temperature and rainfall will vary depending on how far east and west you are.

For a much deeper understanding of the expected temperatures and climate in the parts you plan on visiting, check out this website .

3. Seasons in India

India has 4 seasons:

  • Winter - January to February
  • Summer - March to May
  • Monsoon - June to September
  • Post-monsoon - October to December

Again, these will vary depending on which part of the country you are in, but are the typical overarching months.

We were packing for India in November, and had great weather during our entire 3 weeks there .

In the south it was definitely hotter, with many days being in the low 30s or high 20s, and by the time we were in Delhi it was typically in the mid-20s.

The most popular months to visit India are November to February and it’s not surprising as the weather is much more manageable across the board.

Choosing the right bag for India

When packing for India, the first important decision you need to make is deciding which bag to take.

If you are backpacking India, like us, then I’d recommend one larger rucksack , perhaps 60-70 litres and one smaller day bag , closer to 25 litres.

This will be plenty big enough to pack everything you need, plus more.

Our visit to India formed part of a much larger 3 month backpacking adventure through Sri Lanka and Nepal, and our bags were perfect for holding everything we needed for our entire trip.

Of course, everyone’s trip is different, so when selecting the best backpack for India (if you haven’t already), consider this:

  • How long will your total backpacking trip be?
  • What sorts of activities do you plan on doing in India?
  • Will you be backpacking India on your own or with someone else?

Choosing a larger backpack

I received my backpack as a backpacking gift just after uni, and it's still going strong. It’s accompanied me on every backpacking adventure across more than 2 dozen different countries on 4 continents.

It’s made by Osprey who are the go-to choice for the majority of backpackers.

We see them used everywhere and it’s really unsurprising why.

They are fantastic quality, lightweight, strong and look great.

I’ve even sewn badges into the sides of mine for every country we visit and it hasn’t ruined the integrity at all.

Here are our 2 recommendations:

Choosing the perfect day bag.

A day bag is an essential travel item for India for 2 reasons.

Most obviously because you’ll need it when out exploring individual areas during the day.

But a great day bag is also essential for helping you to keep valuable items close to you when moving between destinations.

For example, when taking long bus or boat journeys between places, we like to store our expensive equipment, like our travel laptops and cameras, in these bags so they are always closer by.

The Loctote Flak Sack is perfect for just this occasion as it's a specially designed anti-theft travel bag .

When choosing which day bag is great for you, consider things like:

  • Will you be doing a lot of vigorous activities? Like hiking
  • Do you need special compartments for your own travel tech?

My day bag is slightly smaller but best suited for day trips and hiking; it’s plenty big enough for both Cazzy and my own needs.

Cazzy’s day bag choice, the Tropicfeel Shell backpack, is an amazing bag in it's own right. A little more pricey but can actually be doubled up as a main backpack or camera backpack as well as it has the ability to expand and contract. Read more in our review of it here .

2-in 1 Backpack combination

If you're looking for a backpack and daypack combination that's waterproof, spacious and practical, then we highly recommend the Salkan.

We've conducted a full review on the Salkan backpack and daypack which you can find here , but I seriously feel it's a fantastic investment that will last you a lifetime of travels.

We've been using it for a while now across Canada and the USA and it's totally awesome.

What about roll-on luggage.

If you're not really into backpacks, and prefer roll-on luggage, then our top recommendation (based solely off personal experience) would have to be Horizn Studios (read our review of them here ).

They make absolute top quality cases, and in particular I am a big fan of the M5 Smart . It's a little more expensive but comes integrated with a portable charger.

Meaning you can charge your devices on-the-go and while waiting around at airports.

If you're planning on backpacking India, then roll-on luggage might not be the most practical solution, though some people do disagree.

If youre going for more a off a resort-based holiday to India, then it will be spot on!

Final thoughts on picking bags for travel to India

If you do plan on travelling as a couple in India, then here’s something to consider.

Less is more.

What do I mean by this?

Well, it means that you probably don’t need to take anywhere near as much with you as you think you would.

When Cazzy and I backpack for a few months or more, we only actually take one larger 70 litre backpack between us and it is plenty.

And as you will see in the rest of this India packing list for backpacking, we take plenty of stuff with us, more than the average travelers.

Partly because of Cazzy’s need for medical supplies (she’s type 1 diabetic) and partly because we work whilst travelling so need a lot of tech.

It’s so much more liberating having just one rucksack between us and is much more convenient overall.

For more backpack ideas, check out my in-depth Solgaard review . These guys offer a full range of backpacks, specifically designed for modern digital nomads who need to carry a mixture of clothes, as well as work gear (like laptops) when travelling.

What to pack for India: Travel Essentials

Here’s a look at all the other travel essentials for India that you might need. Feel free to use the buttons below to skip to different sections.

What to wear in India for men

A male India packing list should ideally be made up of light, loose fitting clothes.

For the majority of the places you visit in India, it’s going to be hot and humid, so heavy clothes are just going to leave you feeling exhausted.

That being said, the night-times can have cold weather once the sun goes in, so it’s worth having one pair of jeans and a hoodie with you as a minimum.

Here’s a look at what I packed for India.

  • 2 pairs of swim trunks
  • 1 pair of jorts
  • 1 pair of jeans
  • Lightweight trousers
  • 1 evening shirt - For those nicer restaurants
  • 2 tank tops
  • 1 lightweight rain jacket - If you visit during the monsoon season (June to December) then make sure you have one of these!
  • 1 pair of trainers - I recommend Tropicfeel as a great all round travel trainer for all kinds of weather
  • 1 pair of flip flops - I wore my Reef flip flops wherever possible in India, I love them as they are incredibly robust and well suited for longer walks
  • 5 pairs of trainer socks
  • 1 cap - Essential in helping to keep the hot, mid-day sun off your face
  • 1 pair of sunglasses - You can pick these up really cheap in most parts of India

What to wear in India for women (from Cazzy)

When it comes to packing clothing for India as a woman, you’ll be happy to hear it isn’t overly complicated.

One thing I would note is that India is bursting with amazing clothing, so I would actually bring less, so that you can purchase some beautiful pieces whilst out there; such as long skirts, or one of a kind dresses and shoes!

  • 1 shoulder scarf - These are light and airy and perfect for covering up when you’re at certain temples, like the Taj Mahal
  • 1 pair of sunglasses
  • 1 light rain jacket - I would base this on the season you’re visiting, so if you’re visiting in the dry season, you will not need this
  • 1 pair of flip flops - Essential for the wearing on the beaches in India
  • 4 t-shirts
  • 2 pairs of shorts
  • 1 swimming costume - I prefer swimming suits in India, just out of respect for local culture
  • 3 sun dresses - A must see for when walking around different sites
  • 1 pair of trainers - Bring just one pair of shoes for India; I recommend either Skechers or Tropicfeel . Any other shoes you need you can easily buy when in India
  • 5 pairs of trainer socks
  • 1 long skirt - Either bring one with you, or wait and buy one out in India because they’re beautifully made and very cheap!
  • 1 pair of light trousers - Great for the evenings in India or if you’re doing some light hiking. I recommend Buddha Pants for a great choice on style, and they're super easy to pack.
  • 1 playsuit or jumpsuit - Perfect for jazzing up an outfit for the evening if you’re somewhere special
  • 1 light jacket - Perfect for long train journeys, internal flights and if you pick up a sea breeze in the evening

Washing clothes in India

Getting your clothes washed in India is pretty easy, and you’ll find places to help you out in all major tourist areas.

In fact, the hostels and hotels themselves usually offer a cheap and easy service, and you can have your clothes back within a day.

First aid kit

For all of our travels, we always pack a straightforward first aid kit, just in case of minor emergencies. Here’s what we took with us to India:

  • Diarrhoea kit - Essential for India where many people suffer from the dreaded “Delhi Belly” which wasn’t an issue for us, yay!
  • Paracetamol
  • Scissors/nail clippers
  • Moleskin tape
  • Needles and thread
  • Bandages & tape
  • Antiseptic cream
  • Travel sickness tablets - Great for all those long bus and train journeys through India where it's easy to get travel sick

Complete first aid kit

Ready-made travel first aid kit

If you don’t yet own a travel first aid kit, then here’s a good option to buy.

It contains the majority of what you need and you can then just add in any other items you want to take with you.

Plus, it’s small enough to tuck away in your backpack and not take up much space.

You can pick up any toiletries you need when in India, but the exact products you are used to back home might be hard to find or a lot more expensive than what they would usually be as they are imported.

That’s why one of my top India packing tips would be to buy a full set of your toiletries before you leave, and these should last you for at least a good few weeks of your trip.

I wouldn’t take much more than that as then you’re just asking for trouble with some sort of unwanted liquids explosion in your luggage!

  • Wash bag - Buy one ( like this ) that has a handle on it. Many bathrooms in Indian hotels and hostels are cramped with nowhere to set them, but having a handle makes your life a LOT easier!
  • 2 x toothbrush
  • 2 toothbrush travel container
  • Men’s deodorant
  • Women’s deodorant
  • Shampoo & conditioner 2 in 1
  • Dry shampoo
  • Disposable razors
  • Shaving foam
  • Electric razor
  • Small perfume
  • Small aftershave
  • Toilet paper - It’s worth keeping a spare toilet roll on your when travelling through India, as many public toilets won’t have any

Travel Banking

When people sort out what to pack when travelling to India, they rarely give enough thought to how they’re actually going to get the best value for money when there.

Well, a key part of packing for any trip should include which travel cards you decide to take with you.

These will allow you to get the most bang for your buck when abroad and make the most of the money you have worked so hard to save for travelling .

It’s also important to make sure that you have enough travel cards so that, just in case you lose one or have something stolen, then you have backups.

When we travel, we have 4.

  • 2 live in my wallet
  • 1 lives in my big rucksack
  • 1 lives in Cazzy’s big rucksack or day bag

That way, if one bag goes missing, or my wallet gets stolen, then we have some way of withdrawing and spending money.

What are the best banks in India?

India is the only country we have visited where we have had issues withdrawing money.

Despite there being so many different banks, very few actually seemed to allow us to withdraw money, which ended up being an issue in Goa in particular.

I had to ride on the back of our hotel owners moped for about an hour, visiting every ATM in the area and finding none that would work!

Outside of Goa, the best and most reliable bank that we found for withdrawals was Bank of Baroda.

Which travel cards do we use?

Nowadays, there are so many great solutions out there that you need to find yourself an option with the best possible currency conversions and limited charges on ATM withdrawals.

We have trialled a number of different solutions over the years and the two favorites we have come down to are Monzo and Revolut .

We’ve used these guys since the start and, if you’re from the UK then I recommend these above all other options.

If you’re from the USA, then check their sites as they are both either live or set to launch very soon abroad.

For more information, check out this guide I put together: Monzo vs Revolut .

It also includes details about the other options available to you.

To get started with either of these, all you do is download the app, enter some basic details and order your free travel cards.

Important Documents

There are a number of key documents you will need to include as a part of your packing list for India; including ...

  • Wallet to hold important documents - This is one of my favourite travel tips and a great way to keep all important documents together and organised. Particularly important if your trip lasts a few months and there’s lots of pieces of paper that could easily get lost
  • Driving license and international driving permit - One of the best ways to get around in India is by moped, particularly when out and about exploring the areas around cities like Udaipur . To hire a moped (or a car) you’ll need your home driving license as well as an international driving permit. If you’re from the UK, then you can get this from The Post Office , be sure to sort it at least a few weeks before you’re set to depart.
  • Copy of your passport and travel insurance - It’s always useful to keep a photocopy of your passport and travel insurance on you when travelling
  • Copy of your vaccinations - When entering India, the officials may require you to show proof of having certain vaccinations. It all depends on which country you come from; but as we visit so many countries, we always keep a copy of this with us
  • Print out of your travel insurance - If ever you do have an accident and need medical treatment abroad, it's extremely useful to have a printed copy of your travel insurance, with detailed notes of what you are covered for and to what level
  • Travel insurance - You will definitely need travel insurance for India! For that matter, you should have travel insurance for any country. You never know what will go wrong and the cost of treatment without insurance can easily enter the tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. If you’re from the US, then SafetyWing is known for providing good value travel insurance with solid coverage. If you’re from the UK, then they may be too expensive and it’s best to start your search with a tool like Compare The Market. Be sure to check the terms & conditions before buying. For example, I could only find one insurer able to offer me insurance for trips of up to 90 days, most only cover you for trips up to 2 or 3 weeks.

Cameras & other tech

As mentioned earlier, we tend to take more travel tech with us than the average traveller.

Probably because we work whilst travelling and are always looking to create great content to share on the blog!

Here’s a look at the cameras and other equipment that we packed for India.

Nikon D780

If you want to capture the best quality travel pictures possible in India, then a DSLR is what you need. When combined with a variety of lenses ( like this one ), you have the ability to create some epic shots, especially as your skills and understanding get better. Our skills with our DSLR are slowly getting better and we try to practice more and more as we go. heck out our latest lens guides for more tips: Sony a7 / Sony a7ii / Sony a7iii / Sony a7riii / Sony a6000 / Sony a6300 / Sony a6400 / Sony a6500 / Sony a6600 / Sony z6 / Canon M50 / Canon 80D / Canon 90D / Canon 6D Mark II / Panasonic GH5 / Nikon D750 / Nikon D850 / Nikon D3100 / Nikon D3200 / Nikon D3300 / Nikon D3400 / Nikon D3500 / Nikon D5600

G7 X Mark II

Handheld video camera

We used our Canon video camera everywhere we went in India, and it’s perfect for capturing really high quality pictures, video and sound no matter where you are. Best of all, it’s lightweight and far less bulky than a DSLR camera . So when we were out on day trips around places like Pushkar , with just a daybag, it was essential in capturing all the gorgeous photos you see on our India travel blog posts . For more ideas, check out this guide on best blogging cameras . They work just as well for non bloggers too!

GoPro Hero 8

Underwater camera / action camera

We’ve tried a few action cameras in recent years, but none compare to the GoPro Hero 8 which is a truly revolutionary and awesome piece of kit. In particular, the auto-stabilisation feature means that you can pick up smooth footage no matter what. It also has much-improved sound quality and is far less bulky than any other decent action cameras on the market. If you don't want to splash the cash on a GoPro, then there are some much cheaper GoPro alternatives out there which don't cost near as much and still have many of the same great features.

DJI Mavic Mini

When we travelled to India in 2018, we did take our travel drone with us, however we didn’t use it. The reason was that it was illegal to fly them there without having the right permit. It appears that many of those restrictions have now lifted , so you may want to take yours with you and actually use it! If a top drone from DJI is a littler too expensive for your budget, check out this guide we published on the best DJI alternatives currently available.

Staying healthy in India

Before visiting India, it is worth picking up a few key items to help make sure you stay safe.

In particular the biggest issues you could face in India include the incredibly hot sun, mosquitos and the dreaded “Delhi Belly”.

  • Antimalarials - Mosquitos are present in different parts of India at different times of the year. To find out if you are at risk during your visit, it’s best to visit your local travel doctor before leaving your home country.
  • Mosquito repellent spray - Bug spray is very useful for keeping all manner of bugs away in the evening. It can be expensive to buy in India, so best to pack it before you leave home.
  • Plug in mosquito deterrent - If you are particularly worried about mosquitos or other bugs getting you whilst you sleep, then a plug-in deterrent is a great way to keep the little blighters at bay. You simply plug it into the wall where it emits a high pitch noise, that you can’t hear but which the bugs can.
  • Sunscreen - Temperatures throughout India regularly exceed 30 and sometimes even 40 Degrees Celsius . It's important that you have suitable sunscreen to help protect you against the worst of the rays. It’s best to pick up a couple of bottles before you fly there as finding good quality sunscreen for a low price can be challenging when in India.
  • Diarrhoea kit - I already mentioned this earlier in the packing list but it’s well worth including again here. The risk of getting sick from eating food in India is relatively high, especially if eating cheaper food from local street vendors. We never suffered with this in India but we certainly did when in Thailand ! Our diarrhoea kit was a vital piece of kit that helped us through.
  • TSA Approved Travel Padlock - Take at least one, so that you can keep your main rucksack safely secured whenever it’s not in your sight. Particularly useful for flights as well as bus and train journeys. Be sure to get a TSA approved travel lock.

Miscellaneous things to pack for India

Here’s a few other pieces of travel gear for India that you may want to add to your own packing list ...

  • Fold down coffee mug - If you love your coffee (like Cazzy!) then having your own mug is a great way to take coffee on the go and cut back on using paper cups. A fold down one is best as it allows you to pack it away in your bag with minimum space being used.
  • Multivitamins - We like to take these travelling with us, just to make sure we get our necessary amount of vitamins and minerals each day. It’s definitely one of the best things to take travelling to India, as you may find that you end up eating much of the same food every day which doesn’t necessarily give you all you need.
  • International Travel Adaptor - In India you will find 3 types of adaptors: Type C, Type D & Type M. My best advice would be to pick up an international travel adaptor which will have you covered for all future backpacking destinations .
  • Pin to open sim card hole in phone - By getting a local sim card in India, you can stay connected to data no matter where you are. But to change your sim you’ll ideally need one of the special tools to open the socket where they are held in your phone. I always keep a metal one in my wallet that is useful all around the world.
  • Dry bag - If you plan on heading out onto the water in India, then a dry bag is useful for keeping your stuff safe and dry.
  • Quick drying towel - There is no need to take a large towel with you to India as all hotels seem to offer them inclusive with your stay. Of course, if you’re staying in hostels then you’ll need your own, but a quick drying towel is still best. You can use it for day trips when out and about and it can dry quickly on the end of your bed when not in use.
  • Playing cards
  • Hand sanitiser - It’s a good idea to clean your hands regularly and before eating so as to avoid getting unnecessarily sick

female tourist India dress code

What NOT to pack for India!

Here’s a few things that you should not add to your India packing list ...

  • Water purifier - The only time you’ll need one of these is if you plan to go off hiking in the wilderness. Everywhere else you can pick up bottled water that is perfectly safe for you to drink.
  • Sleeping bag - Again, only necessary for camping, and not needed for staying in hostels.
  • Tonnes of clothes - India is one of the best countries in the world for picking up cheap clothes. Best of all, they are of great quality. Cazzy picked up a few dresses in Jodhpur that she still uses more than 2 years on; they look fantastic and cost less than $4 each. You can also pick up knock-off branded products that are the same quality as the real thing but at a fraction of a price. I bought a new wallet in Jaipur and it’s still going strong more than 2 years later. These markets are located in most major cities.
  • Lots of valuables - Theft can be common in India, especially if strolling through busy cities like Mumbai with cameras, money and jewellery on show. Instead, only take what you really need. If you do have to carry more, pick up a quality anti-theft bag to help better secure your valuables.

Other items to add to your India packing list

Here’s a few other awesome things to pack for your India trip that we didn’t take personally, but you may want to.

  • Binoculars - If you plan on going on safari anywhere and trying to spot wildlife, then be sure to pack some binoculars.
  • Travel pillow - Great for all those long bus and train journeys throughout India. Personally, we don’t take these as they’re just too bulky and take up more space than we think they’re worth.
  • Packing cubes - We WISH we had taken these to India!
  • Physical books/travel guides - To help save space, you can pick up downloadable travel guides from Lonely Planet and Rough Guides and access these through your phone. Or, if you do like physical guide books then you’ll find that most hostels and hotels have a copy of these that you can borrow and read.
  • Ear plugs - If you’re a light sleeper and plan on staying in a lot of hostels, then definitely get some of these.
  • Waterproof phone case - If you’re going to be in the water a lot and want to snap some cool photos, then one of these is a must have travel item for india
  • Mosquito net - We don’t travel with one of these, but if you’re heading to areas with lots of mosquitoes and don’t think your accommodation is very high quality, then these might be necessary.
  • Kindle - I love reading when travelling, and use the Kindle App on my phone. But having a Kindle could be a good way to go if you want a bigger screen.
  • Hiking boots - Only if you plan on doing enough hiking to warrant them. They do take up a LOT of space in your backpack.
  • Selfie stick
  • Bluetooth speaker
  • Underwater dome for GoPro - These look so cool and we wish we had one when out exploring the beaches of Goa !
  • Buff - This is a really versatile piece of kit to have with you, and many travellers won’t go anywhere without one.

Top tips on what to bring to India

Remember, it gets hot there.

It’s hot in most parts of India almost all year, so light clothing is the ideal way to go. Also, be sure to take anything you think necessary in helping to protect you from the sun; including sun lotion, hats and glasses.

Keep asking yourself “do I really need this?”

I love how travelling for long periods of time forces you to become more minimalist and only pack what you need. So when packing for India, regularly ask yourself if everything you’re planning on taking is strictly necessary. Remember, almost everything can be bought cheaply out there so, just in case you do need something, you can always pick it up when there.

Don’t take any risks

You’re going to face a few health risks travelling in India, including malaria and the chance of picking up a range of other diseases. So take precautions by visiting your travel doctor well before your trip and getting their advice on how to best stay safe . This will require, not only getting malaria tablets, but also getting a range of other injections prior to travelling. They can also advise you on any other necessary medications to take to India.

Well, that’s just about everything we packed for India.

As well as answering all of your burning questions, you should now know what to pack for a trip to India!

Is there something that you think we forgot and that you’d add to your own India packing list?

The ultimate travel checklist for the Indian heading abroad

N ow that you have decided on the destination, you will need to start planning your pack. This is why we decided to help you with a checklist, which will make sure nothing is disregarded. Of course, we have not included clothing and accessories since you already got that figured out. Next, you will find the important aspects you need to consider before traveling abroad, things usually people forget about, especially if you are going out of the country for the first time.

travel checklist for indians

1. Flight ticket & Check-in time

Make sure you purchase the flight tickets well before your travel date so as to avoid the last minute surge in price. Many countries require round trip ticket for entry. Take a printout and keep it near your luggage. It would n’t be good to miss the flight just because you forgot your ticket at home. Also double confirm the date and check-in time. It can be confusing when the departure time is around midnight.

2. Your passport and its copy

As you know, you won’t get further than the checking gate at the airport with out a valid passport. So make sure you put it well, together with your traveling ticket, as these two go together. Make sure that your passport is valid for at least six months from the start of trip. Keep a copy along with your luggage. If you loose the passport while on the trip, report at the nearest police station, embassy and let them know where you are staying.

3. Check Visa requirements

Visa is something which you should consider upfront, almost immediately after deciding on your destination, as it may take a while to get it. Research and see the visa requirements of the country you are planning to visit. Indian citizens have visa-on-arrival access or visa-free access to 52 countries in the world. For some among the rest, visiting visa can be obtained by applying online. For the remaining, you will have to go to the local embassy, with your passport, and unroll the necessary steps in obtaining it.

4. Currency/Forex card

It is obvious that you will need the local currency to be able to pay wherever you go. Don’t expect to get Indian rupee exchanged on the spot, and you probably don’t wish to search for a bank each time you need some money. It is ideal get the currency exchange done here in India, before you go. You can buy foreign exchange online also. Carry both currency and a forex card. You will get better exchange rates on forex card and it has got many other advantages. You can use it in an ATM, to withdraw cash if you need. But it is advisable to swipe, as the commissions will be lower this way. You can carry 12 different currencies in a multi currency forex card .

Also Read:  10 Things you should know before buying foreign exchange in India

5. Travel insurance

No matter where you go, you will need a travel insurance . Is not that you have to think that something bad will happen, but sometimes unfortunate accidents do occur. And it would be bad if you end up having to pay for hospitalization and treatment in a foreign country. Every country has its health system, so it is better to make these preparations before leaving India. For a 1 month trip to the US, it would cost less than Rs 2000 per individual for a coverage of rupees one lakh.

6. International SIM card

An international sim card is one thing which would save you a lot of money. By using an international sim card, you can get rid of the of insanely high roaming charges charged by your service provider in India. You can receive incoming calls for free in most countries. Calling back to India or within the visiting country would be way cheaper. What you get will be a permanent number which you can use while on trips to multiple countries. You can also divert the calls to your Indian number if required.

7. Confirm the maximum luggage load

If it is hard to find out what’s best to pack, it would be advisable first to know what’s the maximum weight accepted, regarding your luggage. Traveling by plane will mean more cash if you exceed the weight. Not to mention that if your luggage goes in the shipping room of the plane, or on another plane, it will take a while to get it back. You can also make good use of the hand baggage allowed. Make sure that you are not taking anything that is not allowed on an airline.

8. Hotel contacts and reservation proof

Once you reached the destination, it would be very easy to have the hotel or hostel’s address and contact number, to find it more quickly. You may also wish to have the reservation document or proof when claiming the room, just to avoid any misunderstanding or error. If you have booked the room via any of the online portals, you might have to produce the same card you used for making the transaction at the time of check-in.

9. E-mail personal documents to your inbox

Very few people consider this aspect, but it may happen to lose your personal documents or worse, to be robbed. These are negative scenarios, but you won’t be the first one to experience them. And trying to explain the local authorities that you don’t have any ID anymore, plus the time you will have to wait for them to acquire the needed documents from your home country, will take quite a while. Not to mention that you cannot leave a country without the proper documents.

10. Check if you need any vaccinations

To your surprise, you may need to get some vaccines in case you are visiting certain parts of the globe. Each area has its specific viruses, which may be entirely new to your body. So to avoid any serious health issues, check to see if you need any vaccines to travel to the chosen destination. And keep the vaccination proof with you, as the local authorities may ask for it. Many countries in Africa demands specific vaccines to be taken.

My husband and I will be going the UK for the first time for seven days, and it will be our first trip abroad. We would like some help with what all things are essential to take along with us, which we may not find there. The main reason for our travel is to see what the UK looks like and visit some of the famous tourist places. We don't know anyone in the UK so our stay will be in a small hotel. Please provide a checklist for UK travel from India.

Hello, @Pri ! Welcome to the forum. The United Kingdom has varying climates, depending on the region that you're visiting. But generally, the whole state receives low temperatures almost all-year round and it's not uncommon as well for light to moderate rainfalls to occur. Thus, when packing, you need to take this into consideration especially if you come from a region in India with particularly tropical climates. Usually, July is the warmest month but even then, it's rare for the temperatures to exceed 19°C during this month. If you're visiting the state during the winter months, November to February, temperatures can go as low as 5°C and sometimes, even below zero degree. The remaining months have temperatures in between so still mildly cold. So now that we have discussed about the climate in the UK, there's the issue of the luggage. For a one-week trip, just how many suitcases would be necessary? You can bring a maximum of two luggages, one for the check-in and one for the cabin. Then, you can also bring another handbag or even a laptop bag, whichever you might need. Since it's just for a one-week trip, you won't need to buy a huge luggage. Just choose one that is lightweight and of course, check the luggage policy of your airline for the dimension limits and weight limits. As for the carry-on luggage, again, make sure that it fits the requirements of your airline. Now that we have these things covered, we can then pack appropriately for the trip. Let us begin with the clothes, which is a very important part of any trip. Since you'd be taking lots of pictures, you'd want to at least look good or well-put together. When it comes to selecting clothes for a UK trip, it's best to take into consideration which season you're visiting. Keep in mind one thing, layering is the key for being comfortable when in vacation in the UK. Since the climate is cold almost all-year round, you need to bring clothes that can easily be put over each other, so think tights, leggings and cardigans. In addition to your normal clothes for the hotel, pyjamas and shirts, you also have to bring these clothes for sightseeing or formal events: Checklist for Packing Clothes in the UK (Female) Category Summer Spring Winter Bottoms 1 pair of jeans, 1 pair of trousers and 1 skirt 1 pair of jeans, 1 pair of leggings/tights, 1 pair of trousers and 1 skirt 2 pairs of jeans, 2 pairs of leggings/tights and 1 pair of trousers Tops/Dresses Tank tops, assorted shirts, formal blouse and summer dress (floral and lightweight) Assorted shirts, long-sleeved shirts, cardigan, formal blouse, waterproof hooded jacket and a maxi dress or sleeved dress Long-sleeved shirts, turtlenecks, fleece jacket, hooded jackets/coats and a formal dress/polo Undergarments 7 pairs of underwear and at least 3 bras 7 pairs of underwear and at least 3 bras 7 pairs of underwear and at least 3 bras Shoes Sneakers or ankle boots, ballet flats or sandals and 1 formal shoes Ankle boots, ballet flats or sandals and 1 formal shoes High boots, ballet flats or sandals and 1 formal shoes Others Scarves, socks, sunglasses and cap (optional: swimsuit) Socks, bonnet and scarves Scarves, mittens, bonnet and socks For the clothes, it's best to pick neutral colours for the bottoms. With the tops, you can choose more bold colours but it's still safer to go with neutrals as well. With dresses, you can pick a lightweight and floral dress for summer. During the spring season, a maxi dress would fit well or even a sleeved dress. For the winter, you can opt for a little black dress or anything that can be transformed into a formal wear during events or dinner dates. Since layering is the key, it's a must to bring clothes that can easily be layered over another. Thus, you have to bring cardigans, jackets and coats. For shoes, you can bring one comfortable shoes for sightseeing and another dressy one for formal nights. Ankle boots or high boots are good too, pick ones that are comfortable for walking around. Scarves are great because they can spice up any outfit easily and can also protect against the cold. Checklist for Packing Clothes in the UK (Male) Category Summer Spring Winter Bottoms 2 pairs of jeans and 2 pairs of trousers 2 pairs of jeans and 2 pairs of trousers 2 pairs of jeans and 2 pairs of trousers Tops Assorted plain shirts, polo shirts, formal or semi-dressy polo and light jacket Assorted plain shirts, long sleeve shirts, formal or semi-dressy polo, lightweight jacket and hooded jacket (formal) Assorted plain shirts, long sleeve shirts, formal or semi-dressy polo, turtleneck, cardigans/pullovers and hooded jacket Undergarments 7 pairs of underwear 7 pairs of underwear 7 pairs of underwear Shoes Sneakers and one formal shoes Sneakers and one formal shoes Sneakers and one formal shoes Others Belt, sunglasses, socks and cap (optional: swim trunks) Socks, belt and bonnet Socks, belt and bonnet So with men, the same goes, you can bring neutral coloured bottoms and be more colourful with your tops. For dressy night outs, you have to be prepared, so bring a formal polo or a button-down shirt that you can easily pair with trousers. During winter time, it gets colder so make sure that you have a turtleneck and some pullovers that can be easily worn over shirts. If you get cold easily, you can even bring inner thermals so you can be more comfortable. During summer, you would be able to pull through with just a shirt and jeans, plus a light jacket or even a denim jacket. Socks are a must in all seasons especially since you're going to be wearing sneakers. Checklist for Other Essentials for a UK Trip Electronics Personal Documents Others Camera with extra memory card Toiletries Itinerary Collapsible bag for souvenirs Music player Sunscreen Airline tickets Extra bag for dirty clothes Tablet Travel pillow Hotel booking confirmation Map or travel book for UK Smartphone Medications Insurance for travel Small ziplock bags for toiletries Laptop (optional) First aid kit Passport and visa, with photocopies Small umbrella UK three-prongs plug adapter Makeup (for women) ATM cards, credit cards and some money Tissue (for air travel) Chargers for all these gadgets Nail kit International driver's permit (optional) Book or magazine (for air travel) When it comes to electronics, you can be as precise as this list or bring as few as you'd like. You can even bring portable chargers or extra batteries. The laptop is optional, but some travellers are also bloggers and they do need to bring their laptop on vacations. Also a must to bring is the UK adapter plug or else, you won't be able to charge these gadgets in the country itself. Most electronics stores have different adapters from different countries, make sure to ask for the UK adapter plug as it is quite distinct from the European adapter plug. Personal items include your toiletries, but make sure you bring only travel sized ones or just transfer them into smaller containers. This can save much space in your luggage. Usually, hotels have small toiletries as well in their bathrooms so if you're not picky, you can opt for those. Sunscreen is a must to protect your skin from the harsh rays of the sun. Other essentials are medications and first aid kit as well. If you do wear makeup, then you have to put them in a separate pouch to protect them from breaking while in flight. A travel pillow is optional but it's a great item for sleeping in the airplane. Of course, you cannot forget about the documents. First, prepare your visa and passport, do take photocopies of them so in case they get lost, you have some information about them. Other essentials are your airline tickets, hotel confirmation booking (printed or screenshot) and itinerary. Medical insurance for travel is also necessary since you don't known when accidents can happen. Since you need money for the trip, you have to bring your ATM card, credit card or even some money to exchange at the airport. An optional item is the international driving license, bring this only if you need to drive around the UK. But you can bring other identification proofs though like your driving license. Lastly, the last column discusses other miscellaneous items like extra bags and souvenir bags. This way, you won't have to buy a bag from the UK just to bring home your souvenirs. A map or travel book for the UK is important to bring too, especially since it's your first time to travel there. A small umbrella is also handy as the UK does receive rainfall all throughout the year. When it comes to packing these items, all personal items and electronics must go in the carry-on luggage. Also pack at least two change of clothes in your carry-on. Your handbag can have all your documents and other important items that you cannot part with. Then, the suitcase itself should house all the other remaining items, those that you can bear to part with, in case your luggage gets lost, which happens at times. I hope this helps you.

Everything Indian students need to know about travelling to the UK

travel to uk

The Omicron variant of COVID-19 has become a global cause for concern, resulting in ever-changing travel rules that has impacted the lives of international students, professionals, and families worldwide.

The UK is one such destination that has frequently changed its travel rules including regarding self-isolation to booking COVID-19 arrival tests. With this, it’s not uncommon for Indian students to wonder if their travel to UK will be affected.

Despite that, it’s generally a great time for Indian students to consider a British education. Recent reports has shown that the UK is planning to ease immigration restrictions for Indian nationals, making it easier for them to stay and work in the country after graduation. On top of that, the UK has recently relaxed many of its rules for incoming travellers.

Here’s an update on everything Indian students need to know about travelling to the UK.

Pre-departure tests aren’t necessary anymore

india to uk travel checklist

The UK has eased some travel restrictions for fully vaccinated passengers and those under 18, removing the need for a pre-departure test and self-isolation on arrival.

This has significantly eased the burden of many travellers as booking pre-departure tests can be extremely expensive.

Fully vaccinated passengers are still required to fill in and submit an online passenger locator form at least 48 hours before their departing flight to the UK and take a test on or before day two of their arrival.

Self-isolation is no longer mandatory for travel to UK

Fully vaccinated students no longer have to self-isolate while waiting for their results.

From Jan. 9, 2022, eligible fully vaccinated travellers and over 5s will be able to take a lateral flow test (LFT)  instead of a PCR on or before day two of their arrival in England. Lateral flow tests for travel can be booked from Jan.7, 2022 and taken upon arrival, by the end of day two.

Students who choose to take an LFT and receive a positive result will have to self-isolate and take an additional NHS PCR test to confirm this. Those with a positive PCR test will need to self-isolate for 10 days. The day students received their positive result would be counted as Day 0.

The NHS states that travellers can stop self-isolating if they do an LFT on the sixth and seventh days of their quarantine period, and:

  • Both tests are negative
  • Travellers did both tests at least 24 hours apart, and
  • Travellers don’t have a high temperature

However, those who choose to stop self-isolating before the recommended 10-day period should take precautions to ensure they will not infect others. This includes wearing a face mask, practicing social distancing, and avoiding interaction with vulnerable groups. More details about getting a positive COVID-19 test results can be obtained here .

india to uk travel checklist

Unvaccinated Indians arriving in the UK must self-isolate for a full period of 10 days, regardless of whether their COVID-19 test is negative. Source: Adrian Dennis/AFP

Guidance for unvaccinated Indians

Unvaccinated Indian students can expect to face a few more restrictions, but are still permitted to travel to the UK. At the moment, they are required to:

  • Show proof of a negative pre-departure LFT or PCR test, which is to be taken two days before leaving for the UK
  • Take a PCR test on or before day two of arrival in the UK, which must be booked with a government-approved provider before travel
  • Self-isolate whilst waiting for arrival test results

All unvaccinated travellers into the UK must abide by the country’s home quarantine rules for 10 full days. A travellers’ day of arrival would count as Day 0.

Indian travellers will have also to take an additional PCR test on Day 8 of their home quarantine. They will still have to self-isolate for the full 10 days regardless if their test result is negative. Those with a positive test result will have to self-isolate for 10 more days.

Where can I quarantine?

Upon entering the UK, travellers will be required to provide an address where they’ll be  staying on the passenger locator form. This could either be a rented term-time address, with friends or family, or in a standard hotel or other temporary accommodation.

Travellers should also ensure that they have food and other necessities delivered to them as they won’t be able to change their location upon arriving at the address.

The UK government notes that travellers should go straight to the place they’re staying to quarantine upon arrival in the country. They should also avoid using public transport unless necessary. Students can read the government’s guide on travelling safely during the pandemic and regularly monitor the UK government’s website for potential changes to UK travel rules.

Everything you need to pack for a trip to India

what to take to India

To step off the train in Jaipur after a long morning’s journey from Delhi, I inch my way closer to the exit packed with passengers trying to dismount and board all at once. Carrying a 50L backpack, as well as small daypack strapped to the front of my chest, makes maneuvering through the crowd of women in bright silk saris and men in freshly pressed pants a challenge.

On the platform – awash with the smells of rosewater perfume, deep-fried snacks and burning brush in the distance – is when I really start to sweat under the unforgiving midday sun and the weight of all my belongings sinks into my shoulders. I consider that perhaps I didn’t need four pairs of shoes or as many tops as I packed.

After two months in India – 5 weeks spent backpacking Rajasthan and 3 weeks as part of Intrepid’s South India Revealed trip – I confess: I over-packed.

If you want to pack efficiently for India, throw out all the rules you usually follow. Here’s what you really need for a comfortable trip through the subcontinent.

what to take to India Mysore Palace

My Intrepid group at Mysore Palace

During peak fall and winter season, temps in Rajasthan hover between 30-35 degrees Celsius and there’s little rain. The south, especially the coast, is thick with humidity and temperatures sway more wildly reaching mid 30s during the day and dropping to as low as mid 20s after dark. In summer the the north of India, especially the western desert can top 45 and the south is drenched from monsoons.

Long sleeves to beat the heat

It seems counter-intuitive, but lightweight, long sleeves do a better job of protecting from the sun and heat than short sleeves or tank tops. Throw a button-down shirt in your backpack, too. It’s easy to pull it on over a t-shirt or tank top before entering temples.

Loose fitting and breathable clothing

Leave the skinny jeans at home. It’s far more comfortable to wear long skirts, loose-fitting pants, and airy t-shirts.

Want to go shopping? Kurtas for men and women (tunics that range from calf-length to shorter mid-thigh versions) are extremely easy to find, ultra affordable, and comfortable.

what to take to India

Breathable clothing for coconut-buying

You’ll see plenty of women all over the country wearing a range of colors and styles over leggings, and most men donning over jeans or khakis. For women, I highly recommend bringing breathable running/yoga leggings to wear under long t-shirts or tunics.

Additional packing tips from Ashish Verma, Intrepid Travel’s Contracting Manager in India:

Ear plugs in noisy cities are a must-pack. A torch and a microfiber travel towel are also a good idea.

Dress modestly

Long skirts or pants along with modest tops will blend in far more, and are required when visiting temples. Remember, both men and women need to cover shoulders and knees. In addition, if you are visiting a Jain temple, no leather is allowed.

Actually, bring two. There will be times when you’ll want to drape it around your shoulders and arms to enter temples and other times when it comes in handy as a wrap for cool nights, or even to loosely put over your face during tuk-tuk rides in dust or smog.

Comfortable shoes

Roads are dirty, cow dung is everywhere in crowded cities and you’ll likely be climbing stone ruins at some point. Dark-colored sneakers are the most practical and comfortable. Throw in a pair of sturdy flip-flops or Birkenstocks for shorter walks or coastal towns or days when there are temple visits. (For temple visits, you need to remove shoes before entering.)

India overnight trains

If you go to India and don’t ride the train , you’re doing it wrong. It’s a memorable and social experience, but one that requires a little bit of pre-planning. Bring a small bag of toiletries, toilet paper, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, and snacks.

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OVERNIGHT TRAINS IN INDIA

Electronics

Bring a portable charger, especially for long bus rides. Extra camera batteries, as it’s much harder to find them in India than it is back home. And don’t forget a plug adapter and even an extra phone charging cord. It was so hot on my trip I had one partially melt in the sun.

Depending on the area and time of year, mosquitoes can range from slight nuisance to serious problems.

what to take to India

Bug spray is a necessity when outdoors!

Apply liberally as the smog often masks the intensity of the sun.

Dry shampoo

Manage expectations and India is delightful. There’s not always hot water at all times of the day. Even if the water is warm, there might not be enough for a full hair wash. Dry shampoo is your best beauty friend.

Always consult your travel doctor before a trip to ensure you have the right vaccines and any necessary emergency medication or asthma inhalers. In addition, bring over-the-counter remedies for Delhi belly, headaches, cold medication, and rehydration powder in case of dehydration.

One of the best tips I ever got from a travel pro was to carry Vicks VapoRub to help with congestion resulting from poor air quality and to smear a tiny patch under your nose in times of potent odors (think the side streets of Varanasi).

what to take to India

Sensory overload in Varanasi

Or three. When not zig-zagging through ancient ruins or grand palaces, there will be downtime on buses and trains. A good book is a welcome companion.

My fellow passengers chuckled, but I always carry a few snacks like biscuits or chips and a sturdy spork to ensure I have clean utensils if a sudden street food craving comes on.

The ultimate packing list:

After reassessing my trip, here’s what I’d highly recommend in terms of quantity of clothing – keep in mind you can do laundry during the trip.

  • 1 long skirt (to cover knees)
  • 1 maxi dress
  • 1 pair loose or khaki pants (2-3 pairs for men in lieu of skirts/dresses)
  • 1 long-sleeve, cotton button-down shirt
  • 2 tunics (bought in India— 1 short sleeve, 1 long sleeve)
  • 1-2 pairs quick-dry leggings/yoga pants
  • 5 pairs underwear
  • 5 pairs quick-dry socks
  • 2 bras (1 sports bra, 1 regular)
  • 2 scarves (or buy them in India)
  • 1 hoodie or lightweight sweater
  • 1 bathing suit
  • 1 pair sneakers
  • 1 pair flip flops or walking sandals
  • 1 pair shorts (only if you are in the south and plan on spending time on the beach)

Now you’ve got the gear, it’s adventure time. Check out Intrepid’s range of small group tours in India.

The Ultimate Packing List for International Students going to UK!

If you have been accepted into your dream university in the United Kingdom then there is nothing standing `between you and your dream to pursue your higher studies in the United Kingdom. Except maybe a complete list of the things that you need to pack. With so many requirements, deadlines, it’s common for you to forget some essential documents or products. In this blog, we bring you a UK Packing List that will help you tick off all your needs for a successful UK journey.

This Blog Includes:

Housing arrangements, what about your visa and passport, do you need to register, money concerns, are your finances settled, what about work, local mobile carrier, household items, toiletries and personal items, kitchen supplies, clothes for cold weather, electronics devices, accessories, what not to add in your uk packing list, uk packing list: prerequisites.

Do not leave for the UK until you’re absolutely certain that you have done everything related to your studies. Have you completed all of your applications and any extra paperwork that they asked for? Do you have a schedule ready?

This is just as important as making sure that your university arrangement is settled. Do not step foot on a plane without having your security deposit paid (or arrangements to do so once you’ve arrived). Use the internet or make a call in order to double-check a day or two before your flight so that you don’t end up stranded once you arrive in the UK.

Without having these settled, you will not be able to get into the country. As soon as you know that you are studying abroad, apply for visas and passports as necessary. Many people actually forget these items and end up in bad situations because of it. You also should have up to three photographs to go along with your passport. Make sure that these are all in a spot that is easy to access (your carry-on or a handbag is a good spot for these), and keep them together.

Because of the strict immigration laws in the United Kingdom, you may need to register yourself with the police within a week of arrival in the UK. Your passport stamp will make it clear whether or not you have to do this. All you need is your passport, two passport pictures, and £34 in order to register. If you do not register within the time frame, you could face fines and extra fees.

Have you Opened a Bank Account? One of the best things you can do when studying abroad in the UK is to have a bank account in the country. This will help prevent delays in paying for items such as bills and rent. Make sure to do a lot of research before opening a bank account in the UK; some banks will offer basic accounts that don’t give credit but will allow you to use ATMs and other technology in order to make payments.

Make sure that you’re saving up before you even arrive in the UK so that you can survive for a few months in case obtaining income is delayed or your financial aid takes longer than expected to come in.

You can work part-time while you study in the UK, and many degree programs will accommodate this. If you are even considering finding a job in the UK, start the process before you leave. Make sure that your resume is up to date, and go for it. The internet has made this a simpler process.

While you’re in the UK you are going to need a UK mobile phone carrier to start calling for job listings, ordering food, or just keeping in touch with friends.

Make sure you have packed the following extremely important documents in your carry-on luggage.

  • Offer Letters
  • Copy of Your Draft/ Fee Receipt
  • Foreign Exchange for Living Expenses (Approx. £2,500) Travellers Cheques or Cash
  • Air Ticket Printout
  • Important Telephone Numbers
  • Chest X-Ray

Bring with yourself some items you’re going to need to complement the place where you’re going to reside. First, check if there’s an opportunity for you to pursue them when arriving in the UK so you won’t need to carry them from your home. Here are some household items you must have in your accommodation place

  • Reading Lamp
  • Air freshener
  • Skincare creams

Your personal hygiene and that of the place where you’ll be living is very important. No matter where you go, your packing list must involve some essential toiletry elements.

  • Toilet Cleaning Brush
  • Floor and Carpet Cleaning Brush
  • Nail Clipper
  • Small Mirror
  • Shaving lotion

As an international student, you will be living independently. This means that you will often have to cook on your own. Below are some of the essential elements your kitchen must contain:

  • Dishwashing detergent

Weather is the major trait of the UK. Though there are sunny days from time to time, unexpected rainy days are a common thing. Anyway, this doesn’t mean you must bring all your garments with you, but a list of essentials is a necessity.

  • Coats & Jackets
  • Pair of shoes
  • Sports clothing
  • Long-sleeved shirts
  • A pair of gloves
  • Suits for any special event

Technological devices are an important part of our daily life. First, make sure you have your cell phone with you. You’re going to need it often for browsing the Internet, communicating, and capturing moments in the UK .

  • Digital Camera

Note: You’re going to need internet access while you’re in the UK, especially in the first few weeks while you’re settling down and getting to know your city. We highly recommend you order a pre-paid SIM card, so you can start using your phone as soon as you arrive.

Every one of us has favourite accessories which in a sense, we’re emotionally related to, or simply are an inseparable part of our daily look. There are usually small in size, like a clock hand, and probably won’t overload your luggage. There is the option of buying one in the UK, but it will certainly not replace your favourite one. Here are some accessories you can have in your packing:

  • Photo Albums
  • A personal diary

First, before rushing to fill your packs with whatever comes to your mind, you must see if those products or items are not included in the list of banned items or goods. There are certain British laws that compose the list of items or goods you’re not allowed to bring with yourself when entering the UK:

  • Banned items
  • Illegal drugs
  • Cold weapons like knife
  • Self-defence spray
  • Endangered animals or plant species
  • Rough diamonds
  • Obscene materials
  • Meat or dairy products from non-EU countries

Foods and plant products are restricted in the following circumstances:

  • Aren’t free of pests and diseases
  • Aren’t for your own use
  • Weren’t planted and grown in the EU

This was all about the UK Packing List that you need to consider for your study abroad needs. You could also have a small checklist or print this page and use it as a checklist and cross off each item from the list to take. Planning to study abroad? Planning to embark on your journey as an Indian student to the United Kingdom for your studies? Journey to study in the UK opens up a world of academic opportunities, cultural experiences, and personal growth. As you prepare for this exciting adventure, packing your bags can be a big task. There are several essential things to carry to the UK for students from India to ensure a comfortable stay.

Table of Contents

Create a packing timeline, research uk weather, consider lifestyle and duration of stay, make a packing list, check airline baggage regulations, choosing versatile clothing, comfortable footwear, adaptors and converters, steps to packing the right essentials, important packing checklist, inform banks, secure accommodation, set up international roaming, obtain travel insurance, prepare important documents, pack essential medications, check travel restrictions and requirements, carry-on essentials for traveling abroad, checked-in essentials for traveling abroad, things not to carry while traveling to the uk, make a list, plan for laundry facilities, consider the 80% rule, roll instead of fold, use travel-sized toiletries, frequently asked questions, before you start packing.

Before you pack your bags, there are a few important steps to ensure a smooth and efficient packing process. Here are some key considerations before you start packing:

This allows you to allocate specific days or weeks for different tasks, such as making a packing list, purchasing necessary items, and packing your bags. It helps prevent last-minute rush.

Check the average temperatures, rainfall, and seasonal variations in the region you will be living or studying. This information will guide your clothing choices and help you pack accordingly.

If you will be attending universities in the UK, factor in any special events or formal occasions that may require specific attire. Understanding your lifestyle and length of stay helps you pack the right essentials and avoid unnecessary items.

Start by making a packing list for Indian students going abroad. A comprehensive packing list keeps you organized and helps prevent overpacking or leaving important items behind.

Each airline may have different rules regarding the size, weight, and number of bags allowed for carry-on and checked-in luggage. Adhering to these regulations ensures a hassle-free check-in process. Research any specific baggage restrictions or customs regulations that may apply to your journey. Being aware of these regulations prevents any complications during customs inspections.

Things to Consider While Packing

The decision to study overseas offers a transformative experience, expanding horizons and fostering global perspectives. When it comes to packing for your journey, there are a few things to take to the UK from India for students. Let's explore some essential tips to help you make wise choices while packing.

The UK is known for its ever-changing weather, so it's crucial to pack clothing that adapts to different seasons. Opt for versatile pieces that can be layered, allowing you to adjust to varying temperatures. For example, London experiences winters with average temperatures around 2-8°C and occasional snowfall. Summers are usually warm, with average temperatures around 18-25°C. Rainfall is fairly evenly distributed throughout the year. So pack for the seasons accordingly.

Exploring your new surroundings and commuting around the UK will likely involve a fair amount of walking. A pair of comfortable footwear will keep your feet happy throughout the day.

The UK uses a different plug configuration and operates on a different voltage than you might be accustomed to in India. Pack suitable adaptors and converters for your electronics to ensure they can be safely plugged in and used.

To ensure that you pack the right essentials efficiently for your journey to the UK, follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Prioritize Essential Items and Pack Them First

Begin packing by prioritizing the essential items on your list. These may include travel documents, medications, toiletries, and other crucial personal items.

Step 2: Consider Packing Multi-purpose Items to Save Space

Look for multi-purpose items that can serve multiple functions or be styled differently. Opt for versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched to create various outfits.

Step 3: Separate Your Check-In and Cabin Baggage

It is a good idea to pack all the documents and other essential items in overhead cabin baggage. All clothing and footwear can go in check-in baggage.

When packing for your journey as an Indian student to the UK, you must ensure you have all the necessary items. Here's a comprehensive UK travel checklist from India to help you stay organized and make sure you haven't overlooked anything:

a) Travel Documents

  • Valid passport
  • Student visa documents
  • Admission letters from the university
  • Flight tickets
  • Health insurance information

b)  Clothes

  • Season-appropriate clothing
  • Comfortable shoes and sandals
  • Raincoat or umbrella

c)  Local Currency

  • Sufficient amount of local currency for initial expenses
  • Debit/credit cards

d)  Electronics

  • Laptop or tablet
  • Mobile phone and charger
  • Power adapters and converters (suitable for UK electrical outlets)

e) Toiletries

  • Personal hygiene items
  • Medications (with prescriptions, if necessary)

f)  Personal Documents

  • Identification documents (e.g., driver's license, Aadhaar card)
  • Medical records and prescriptions
  • Emergency contact numbers

Before Leaving Home, Do the Below

Before you embark on your journey to the UK as an Indian student, there are important tasks you should complete to ensure a smooth transition. Here's a checklist of tasks to accomplish before your departure:

Contact your bank and inform them about your travel plans to the UK. This will help prevent any issues with your bank accounts or cards while you're abroad.

If you haven't already arranged accommodation in the UK, ensure you have a place to stay upon arrival. Confirm the details, address, and contact information with your accommodation provider to avoid confusion upon arrival.

If you plan to use your mobile phone while in the UK, contact your mobile service provider to set up international roaming. Consider researching local SIM card options, often providing more affordable data and call plans.

Check with various insurance providers to find a policy that suits your needs and ensure you have the necessary coverage before departing.

Make copies of all your essential documents. Keep both physical and digital copies in a secure location.

If you require any specific medications, ensure you have an ample supply throughout your stay.

Stay updated on travel restrictions, COVID-19 protocols, and additional requirements. Check the official websites of relevant authorities to ensure compliance with all necessary regulations.

When traveling abroad as an Indian student, your carry-on bag becomes an essential lifeline. Here's a list of essential items to include in your cabin baggage:

  • Travel Documents (passport, Visa documents, admission letters, health Insurance documents)
  • Medications (prescription medications, over-the-counter medications for common ailments)
  • Personal Comfort Items (neck pillow, blanket, eye mask, earplugs, non-perishable snacks)
  • Electronic Devices (laptop or tablet, mobile phone, charger, universal adapter)
  • Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, face wash, moisturizer, hand sanitizer)

While your carry-on bag holds the essentials for your journey, your checked baggage allows you to pack larger items and non-essential belongings. Here are some items that are better suited for your checked-in luggage:

  • Electronics ( gaming consoles)
  • Non-essential clothing (extra pairs of shoes, bulky sweaters or jackets, formal wear)
  • Fragile items (glassware, musical instruments, ceramic or porcelain items)
  • Excess toiletries or cosmetics (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, skincare products, perfumes, toothpaste)
  • Books or study materials
  • Other non-essential items (umbrellas, non-essential kitchen gadgets)

When traveling to the UK as an Indian student, you must be aware of the prohibited things to take from India to the UK that should not be included in your packing list. These items are restricted by law and should not be carried to ensure compliance with local regulations and maintain a safe and secure travel experience. Here are some examples of items not to carry while traveling to the UK:

  • Weapons and firearms (guns, including replicas and toy guns, ammunition, explosives, knives, or sharp objects)
  • Illegal drugs and narcotics
  • Restricted goods (endangered wildlife products, counterfeit goods or pirated materials, cultural artifacts or antiques without proper documentation or permits)
  • Hazardous materials (flammable substances, explosives or fireworks, toxic or corrosive substances, radioactive materials)
  • Agricultural and food Items (fresh fruits, vegetables, and plants)
  • Animal products (such as meat, dairy, or eggs)
  • Seeds or plants without proper permits
  • Offensive or obscene material (pornographic materials)

How to Resist the Urge to Overpack?

Packing for a journey to the UK as an Indian student can be challenging, especially when faced with the urge to bring unnecessary items. Here are some practical tips to help you resist the temptation to overpack:

Make a detailed list of the essential items you need. Stick to this list and avoid adding non-essential items you may not use during your stay.

Most accommodations or nearby laundromats offer washing machines or laundry services. Packing a small amount of clothing and planning to do laundry during your stay allows you to travel lighter.

A helpful rule of thumb is to lay out all the items you plan to pack and then remove 20% of them. This forces you to evaluate each item's necessity.

Rolling your clothes can help save space in your suitcase. It also reduces wrinkles and makes it easier to see and access each item without disturbing the entire contents of your bag.

This saves space and ensures compliance with airline regulations for carrying liquids.

Packing efficiently for your journey as an Indian student to the UK is crucial for a successful and enjoyable experience. Use the provided checklist, plan, and prioritize your essential items. By packing smartly, you can focus on embracing new opportunities, making lifelong memories, and immersing yourself in the rich culture and academic pursuits the UK offers. Bon voyage!

What are the documents required at the time of immigration?

The documents required at the time of immigration to the UK as an Indian student typically include the following:

  • A valid passport with a student visa.
  • Admission letter from your educational institution.
  • Proof of financial means to support your studies and stay in the UK.
  • Accommodation details or address in the UK.
  • Travel insurance documents.

How much money can I carry from India to the UK?

Carrying a reasonable amount of cash for initial expenses is always advisable. You must declare cash of £10,000 or more to UK customs. However, there is no limit on how much you can carry in your accounts.

How much luggage is allowed on international flights for students?

The luggage allowance can vary depending on the airline, fare class, and destination. In general, most airlines offer a free baggage allowance of upto 23 kgs for international students in addition to the allowed limit.

The gang-rape of a tourist from Spain in the eastern state of Jharkhand in India has sparked anger and a discussion on safety in a country with rising crimes against women .

A 28-year-old woman and her husband were assaulted in the Dumka district of Jharkhand where they had set up their tent for the evening on Friday night, according to the tourists and the police. The couple, who manage an Instagram page chronicling their motorbike travels across South Asia, posted a video recounting their dreadful ordeal.

P olice said they arrested three men and were searching for four others in connection with the gang-rape of the Spanish-Brazilian woman and the assault of her 64-year-old husband.

The Spanish citizens were found on a roadside around 11pm on 1 March, according to the police.

The incident came to light after the couple shared a video describing the attack, which has since been removed. They later thanked their followers for support in a new video, where she appeared with facial bruises.

“The police told me to turn off the post so as not to disturb the investigation. I will post it later,” the woman said on an Instagram story.

“My face looks like this, but it’s not what hurts me the most. I thought we were going to die. Thank God we are alive,” she wrote.

The survivor earlier revealed in an interview with Spanish TV channel Antena 3 that she was raped in turns by the men for about two hours while some watched.

Pitamber Singh Kherwar, the police superintendent of Dumka, told reporters that the couple stopped a patrol van, which then transported them to a nearby health centre for medical care.

“The couple were speaking in a mixture of English and Spanish so the patrolling team could not understand them initially. But they appeared visibly injured so they were taken for treatment,” he said, adding that they then told doctors about the rape. He said medical tests also confirmed rape.

“The other four accused have been identified, and searches are underway. They will be nabbed soon,” he added.

Travelling on two motorcycles, the couple had arrived in Dumka from Bangladesh and were on their way to Nepal through Bihar.

The Spanish embassy said they were in contact with the couple and providing support.

“Kindly note that the Data Protection Law in Spain does not allow to share any details regarding consular cases. The Embassy of Spain remains in permanent contact with Spanish citizens in need, as is the case, and continues to liaise actively with the Indian authorities. The Embassy is very grateful to them for their cooperation,” it told The Independent.

The incident has sparked debate on the safety of women in the country. Several people offered their support on the couple’s Instagram and YouTube videos.

Many women travel influencers also voiced their concerns on social media. A hashtag asking for justice for the victim was also shared widely among the biking community.

Travel influencer Ankita Kumar, who goes by the username @monkey.inc, wrote: “We have failed her as a country, we need to make sure justice is served.”

Another user wrote: “So ashamed and disappointed I am.”

Rekha Sharma, the head of India’s top women’s rights body – the National Commission for Women (NCW) – faced backlash after her remarks to a post made by a journalist went viral. Journalist David Josef Volodzko wrote that despite India being one of his favourite places, the “level of sexual aggression” he observed while residing in the country was unparalleled compared to anywhere else he had been. He also shared instances during which he had observed such aggression, adding: “I never met a female traveler who had not been groped or assaulted or worse, even if they had only been in country for mere days.”

Ms Sharma responded: “Did you ever report the incident to police? If not then you are totally an irresponsible person. Writing only on social media and defaming whole country is not good choice.” Several people on X, formerly Twitter, accused Ms Sharma of victim blaming and focussing more about how India was being perceived rather than the crisis at hand.

She later clarified in a post that an NCW “member met the surviver within a few hours and was there to see that all seven accused people were arrested”.

The Brazilian foreign ministry has also reached out to the victim.

In 2022, India saw an average of almost 90 rapes reported daily – meaning one woman was raped every 18 minutes – as per the National Crime Records Bureau, which documented 31,516 cases of rape that year. The states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh reported the highest number of cases.

There was chaos in the Jharkhand assembly over the incident leading to two adjournments. The Jharkhand government has formed a special investigation team to probe the allegations, NDTV said.

Three men in India have appeared in court after being accused of gang-raping a travel vlogger on a round-the-world trip with her husband.

Police are also searching for four other suspects believed to have been involved in the violent assault.

Victim Fernanda, 28, and her husband Vicente, 45, were attempting to visit every country in the world on motorbikes, and were documenting the journey to their 300,000 followers on social media .

The couple, from Spain , were making their way to Nepal from India when they stopped and made a makeshift camp for the night in the Dumka district in India’s Jharkhand.

Couple 'beaten and gangraped' by seven men in India while motorcycling across the world Fernanda, the 28-year-old Hispanic-Brazilian woman who has been victim of brutal gang rape in India, he explained together with his partner Vicente, a 45-year-old Valencian, how the events took place in the early hours of Friday morning.

However, shortly after settling down for the evening, they were spotted by a group of men who attacked Vicente and sexually assaulted Fernanda.

In a heartbreaking video posted after the attack, Vicente said his mouth had been ‘destroyed’ by the assailants, who also robbed the pair and used a helmet and a stone to beat him.

Fernanda, who appeared in the video with visible bruises on her face, said despite the robbery it was clear ‘their only intention was to rape her’.

She later told Spanish media: ‘They raped me, they took turns while some watched and they stayed like that for about two hours.’

The suspects are thought to be between 20-30 years old and are accused of assaulting Fernanda in shifts.

On Saturday, Police Superintendent Mr. Kherwar revealed that one of the apprehended individuals had provided the names of other people allegedly involved. A forensic science laboratory is assisting them with the case, he added.

According to the Telegraph, a judge awarded the couple around £9,500 compensation for the assault.

Anjaneyulu Dodde, deputy commissioner of Dumku, said: ‘We have given him a compensation of one million rupees. We are conducting a thorough investigation and will try to ensure a speedy trial and conviction.’

The Jharkhand Police said three persons arrested in connection with the gang-rape of a Spanish tourist and beating her husband in Dumka district were sent to judicial custody by a court. The couple was attacked while asleep in the tent they had pitched to spend the night on 01 March at a desolate area of Kunji village, some 300 km or an eight-hour drive from Ranchi, the capital of the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand. The attack has sparked outrage in India, prompting many women to share their experiences of sexual violence on social media, as well as their frustrations over how it is dealt with.

The couple, known as @vueltaalmundoenmoto on Instagram, have been on a mission to travel across the globe for the past five years. Their bio states they have covered 170,000 km together, visiting 66 countries.

They are now planning to return to Spain, where they live, before resuming their trip at a later date.

75+ Tech Checklists to Improve Efficiency

Your email has been sent

Our memories are not infallible, which is why companies with common sense employ checklists to keep things ordered and working well.

For instance, take the matter of network and systems security . You’d need to think about workstations, mobile devices, servers, etc. You’d then need to consider the workstations in detail, such as thin clients, corporate desktops, and so on. An organization has to check what elements should be tracked and addressed, when there are seemingly so many threats coming from so many directions.

It’s certainly possible for companies to create tech checklists themselves, but consider how much your time is worth.

TechRepublic Premium can save you a lot of hassle at a very reasonable price. Our library is a healthy mix of documents and spreadsheets on a wide range of topics. Examples include MSP best practices, equipment, cybersecurity, cloud, data, payroll, quality assurance, GDPR and project management.
