Clint Black Kicks off Celebratory Killin’ Time Tour with Three Nights at the Ryman Auditorium
by Clayton Edwards February 21, 2024, 10:41 am
Clint Black released his debut album Killin’ Time in 1989. The album produced several hits for Black including the title track, “A Better Man,” “Nothing’s News,” and “Nobody’s Home” among others. Since its release, it has attained Triple Platinum status. Maybe more importantly, it launched Black to stardom and made him a dominating force on country radio in the early nineties.

This May will mark 35 years since Black released his stellar debut record. He celebrated the milestone a few months early with a string of shows at the iconic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville over the weekend. The three-night stand at the Mother Church was just the beginning of his celebratory world tour.

According to Music Row , Black kicked off the shows by playing Killin’ Time in its entirety. Then, he turned his attention to his later hits. Those included “Like the Rain,” “Summer’s Comin’,” and “A Good Run of Bad Luck,” among others. Additionally, he turned “A Change in the Air” into a family affair by inviting his wife, Lisa Harman Black, and their daughter Lily Pearl Black to sing it with him. Clint and Lisa Hartman Black also performed their duet “When I Said I Do” to the delight of all the couples in the crowd.

It's Still Difficult, But It Might Be Easier Than Ever for Outsiders to Crack Country
Trending on billboard.
In 2024, Black’s Killin’ Time – The 35th Anniversary World Tour will honor the album’s more than three decades of influence in shaping country music’s sonic landscape. Initiating with two already sold-out shows at Nashville’s vaunted Ryman Auditorium on Feb. 16 and 17 (and having just added a third and final night at the Ryman on Feb. 18) Black’s tour will feature the Grammy winner playing his debut album live from start to finish, heightened by some of his more than a dozen Hot Country Songs No. 1s, such as “When My Ship Comes In,” “A Good Run of Bad Luck,” and “Nothin’ But the Taillights.”
Earlier this year, Black was honored with the Academy of Country Music Awards’ ACM Poet’s Award, an accolade that recognizes a songwriter or artist-writer’s significant writing contributions to country music. Even on his debut album, Black was already constructing his case as an artist whose vocal and instrumental capabilities were paralleled by his songwriting caliber. Black has written or co-written nearly all of his hit songs, with several of them, including his Grammy-nominated collaboration with Wynonna, “A Bad Goodbye,” and his duet with his wife Lisa Hartman Black, “When I Said I Do,” being solo writes.
“I set out to do that,” Black says. “I grew up reading liner notes and I wanted to know who was writing something I loved. I wasn’t trying to make any kind of statement, but I thought I could do it. And I saw an interview with Reba where she said she listened to about a thousand songs every time she wanted to make an album of 10 songs. That was terrifying to me. I thought, ‘Man, that’s a hard job. I’d rather do this other hard job and not have to go looking for songs.’ And I knew if I was successful in writing my own songs, I was going to need a lot of songs, if I was putting out an album every 18 months or so. I started writing a lot of songs, so that every time I had to make an album, I had at least 30 songs written that I wanted to record.”
One such solo write on the record, “Nothing’s News,” was born of that desire to prove his talent as a song crafter to his father. Black recalls his father “believed in me as a singer, but as a songwriter? Not so much. He told me I hadn’t done enough living to write real country songs, really, so I ran home and wrote ‘Nothing’s News’ to prove him wrong.”
“We were on our way to a gig and talking about how long it was taking the first single to come out,” he recalls. “He said, ‘The big wheel’s turning slowly,’ and I said, ‘Well I hope it starts turning soon, because this killing time is killing me.’ And we looked at each other and knew we had a song.”
Black recalls recording Killin’ Time in Houston, though he and Nicholas later traveled to Nashville to record overdubs—a trip that led to one of Black’s fondest “Nashville stories” from that early era.
“I was in Nashville for an extended time for the first time ever, and one of my producers, James Stroud, had loaned me his car. It was a Porsche,” Black recalls. “One day, he told me, ‘If you get me a gold record for this album, I’ll give you that car.’ He ended up having to sell the Porsche and then he bought himself a newer Porsche after that. The album was double platinum by then, and word got out that he had promised me a Porsche. So he did, in front of ASCAP, we have a photo of him handing me the keys and standing in front of that car. We would go on to give that car back and forth over the years — he has it now,” Black recalls.
Like many artists who launched in the late 1980s and through the 1990s, Black has felt the impact of the resurgent popularity of ‘90s country sounds. He points to the genre-spanning web of influences among the era’s artists, producers and label execs as a key factor.
In tandem with the tour, Black will release a vinyl reissue of Killin’ Time in partnership with Sony Music and Vinyl Me Please. The special reissue will be on 180g Brown Galaxy vinyl with new lacquers cut by AIR Mastering’s Barry Grint and will ship in May 2024.

Clint Patrick Black (born February 4, 1962) is an award winning American country music singer-songwriter, producer and actor from Long Branch, New Jersey.
A year after Black’s birth, his family decided to leave the East Coast and head south down to Texas. Clint spent his childhood fascinated by music, self-teaching himself how to play the harmonica and guitar, as well as playing in a band with his three elder brothers, before deciding to try his hand as a solo act when he dropped out of high school.
Inspired by old school country crooners such as George Strait and Willie Nelson, Black played at bars and lounges, whilst working a variety of jobs to support himself, from construction worker to fishing guide. In 1989 he was picked up by country label RCA Nashville, and his musical career took off.
He released his debut album “Killin Time” shortly after, which was met with critical and commercial success, turning Clint Black into an overnight country star. The album topped Billboard charts, as did both lead singles, and it was certified platinum a year later. Black married Texan actress Lisa Hartman around the same time.
After a successful start, which also saw Clint take home a slew of country music awards, he didn’t rest on his laurels, releasing albums every year for the following three years, up till 1994. After a short break, he released a further two albums, including 1999’s “D’lectrified” before taking a five year sabbatical to take care of his newborn daughter.
His comeback album, “Spend My Time” was released on his newly formed record label Equity Music Group. Black’s most recent musical output was 2005’s “Drinkin’ Songs and Other Logic”, his ninth studio album.
Black has also had a variety of TV and film appearances, in acting roles and as himself. Notable roles include parts in TV show “Wings”, comedy movie “Anger Management” and reality TV contest, “Celebrity Apprentice”.
Live reviews
One of the most impressive aspects of seeing live performance is watching the band effortlessly work their magic on their speciality instrument. Something that’s even more impressive is seeing the talent of multi-instrumentalists, and Clint Black is one of the most talented guys around on guitar, piano, vocal, and every other instrument you can think of. He opened with Something That We Do, standing solo centre stage with just his guitar. It was a epic rendition of his famous song, and it brought the house down, the best way he could’ve started the show.
Black’s back catalogue of 4 number one singles off his debut album meant that his following rocketed pretty early on in his career. Whilst Killin’ Time was released back in 1989, it was great to see that the crowd at his newer shows was a combination of long standing fans and younger enthusiasts appreciating the fantastic sound.
From start to finish, Black interacted with his audience, calling out to individuals, encouraging everyone to sing along, and cracking jokes for everyone to laugh along to. The laid back environment encouraged everyone to sing and dance along, and we were all having the best time. I’d definitely recommend you going to see Black live, he seems to be like a fine wine, getting better with age!

Aside from the fact that this superstar takes the time to interact with fans on social media is one thing ... getting there and seeing him play is several notches above awesome :) .
The year I met my husband and we got married was when Clint Blacks songs Killing Time and Better Man were in the charts . Those songs were on our playlist at our wedding.
I bought the ticket for this show last December for the Calgary Show.. it was a long six months to wait .. i fig ok i ll enjoy a great evening out of music .. front row awesome ! I didnt realize just how close this seat was to the stage ... I was BLOWN away with this man's musicianship and his voice. Overall he is still one hell of an entertainer !!! The experience .. PRICELESS!! :))
I recommend seeing Clint Black in this type of intimate venue that was at the Chrome Showroom at the Deerfoot Inn and Casino in Calgary, Alberta Canada ... I never dreamed I would ever get a seat up this close . Thank you Mr Black for an unforgettable night :)) !!!

Clint Black, now in his 50s, is one of the most recognisable names in country music thanks to the longevity and success of his career. He first appeared on the circuit in the mid-80s and continued to release albums consistently for almost three decades. Although there has been no new music for many years, the fans continue to attend Clint's shows in huge numbers due to the legacy he has left on the country music scene.
There is something wonderfully Americana about Black's music as it seems to encapsulate the tones of the countryside and the rich air of Texan and Jersey all at once. He is joined by a selection of musicians who he gets on very well with as they have a very obvious rapport. He reaches out to share the rapport with the crowd during the hits including 'Nobody's Home' 'A Good Run of Bad Luck' and the stomping 'Summers Coming'. He thanks the crowds sincerely over deafening cheers before one final singalong 'Been There' brings the show to a joyous close.
Been to many of Clint's shows. He was fun, funny, spot on, and charming, as always. It was also my second show of his to see in 5 weeks. So totally grateful he decided to perform with Florida having been hit with Hurricane Irma less than a week prior. ♥️
Venue left a lot to be desired. It's a venue's option to serve alcohol and I do not begrudge anyone their right to enjoy. But it causes a constant stream of people parading in front of view of performance and unruliness of some who partake. We had to move our seats because of one such person right behind me who was also obnoxious and threatening towards my daughter and I. Having flown from NJ just to see Clint and having to deal such a person and venue was disappointing.
I've been a fan of Clint Black for 30 years and his music is as inspiring today as the first time I heard him. With averaging 2,3 or 4 concerts a year I'm still in awe at each one. He's full of surprises...Clint doesn't just walk on stage and sing. He's a story teller, full of jokes, and very interactive with his fans. He has on occasion even entertained us on the drums. Clint's muti talented band, of which 3 members have been with him for over 30 yrs are also top notch. I'm looking forward to "Killin' Time" with Clint Black for the next 30 years...
We have a fantastic time at the concert,I took my wife Cathy for her birthday and it was a thrilling time, never experience a show like that.
Wish we could have been closer to the stage but guess I didn't order the tickets quick enough.
All in all it was a great great time,we will never forget that awesome concert.
Hope he comes back to Oregon for another concert.
Albert-Newberg,Oregon.
I’m so glad I went to see Clint Black in concert. He is so talented with his guitar playing, harmonica playing and amazing singing and story telling. It was outdoors in the cool pines of Payson and the show lasted about an hour and a half. Clint’s voice is crystal clear and sounds as good in person as he does on his recordings. Absolutely loved the show! I would go again tomorrow if I could.
Solid performance by Clint Black. His band was spectacular and a good time was had by all
Cherry Peak ski resort is a nice setting
The warm up band was poor at best. Lousy vocals, mediocre instrumental.
I don’t think they have figured out what kind of music they want to play. (Rock or country)
Was quite glad when the were through
Clint Black.."and the whole band" were great. Clint sang fantastic, he has only gotten better as the years pass! He played the harmonica with great skill, passion, and conviction he blew me away! I cannot remember seeing any performance better in my life, I am a RE dedicated fan!!! Absolutely fantastic performance.
Clint Black is a great entertainer! Not only was the music exceptional, but Clint is also a humorous
storyteller. Each member of his band - who have been together for 30 years - was highlighted at some point in the show and they are all great musicians! I would love to go to more of Clint Black's shows!!

Clint Black Reveals ‘Killin’ Time’ 35th Anniversary Tour
As 2024 approaches, Clint Black is gearing up for a milestone celebration – the 35th anniversary of his debut album Killin’ Time – with a North American tour.
The tour begins with two sold-out shows at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on February 16 and 17, with an additional night added due to overwhelming demand on February 18. Black is set to showcase his Grammy-winning debut album in its entirety as well as other hits such as “When My Ship Comes In” and “A Good Run of Bad Luck.”
Black’s debut album produced not only chart-topping singles but also earned him multiple accolades, including Billboard’s Country Song of the Year in 1989 and 1990.
In a statement to Billboard , the singer expressed the joy of revisiting songs that haven’t graced the stage in 35 years. He reflected on the journey of the album and the camaraderie with his band members who played on the original recording.
“We’ll play some songs at soundcheck and put in stuff like ‘Winding Down’ and ‘Straight From the Factory,’” Black told the publication. “Two of the guys in my band played on that album, so it’s fun to go back and remember it.”
In sync with the tour, a vinyl reissue of Killin’ Time is set to his shelves in May 2024. Black is partnering with Sony Music and Vinyl Me Please for a special reissue on 180g Brown Galaxy vinyl.

Clint Black announces 2024 world tour celebrating 35 years of ‘Killin’ Time’
Following three sold-out shows at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, Clint Black is going on tour to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the award-winning album, Killin’ Time . He and his electrifying band will play the album top to bottom along with many other No. 1 hits.
Black moved to Nashville over 35 years ago with his bandleader and longtime songwriter colleague, Hayden Nicholas, where he readily signed a deal with RCA Records.
In one of the most storied careers in modern music, the Katie, Texas native surged to superstardom as part of the fabled Class of ’89, reaching No. 1 with five consecutive singles from his triple-platinum debut, Killin’ Time . The superstar logged the No. 1 Billboard Country song of both 1989 and 1990 for “ A Better Man ,” and “ Nobody’s Home ” respectively, both from Killin’ Time .
The thing that I found most amazing is that Killin’ Time was Black’s debut album. It had five No. 1 singles on it. And though the title track “ Killin’ Time ” is his signature song, the song “ A Better Man ” found on side B of the record, won Single of the Year at the 1989 ACM Awards. The album also won ACM Album of the Year in 1989.
Clint followed Killin’ Time with the triple-platinum Put Yourself in My Shoes , and then a string of platinum and gold albums throughout the 1990s. Perhaps most impressively, Clint wrote or co-wrote every one of his more than three dozen chart hits, including “ A Better Man ,” “ Where Are You Now ,” “ When My Ship Comes In ,” “ A Good Run of Bad Luck ,” “ Summer’s Comin’ ,” “ Like the Rain ” and “ Nothin’ But the Taillights ,” part of a catalog that produced 22 No.1 singles and made him one of the most successful singer/songwriters of the modern era.
Since that time, Clint Black has won four Grammys, 22 No. 1 singles, and sold millions of records and has had billions of streams. In October 2019, Black received his star on the Music City Walk of Fame , and in 2023, his authentic lyricism and powerful musicianship earned him the ACM Honors Poets Award .
Rolling Stone magazine called Killin’ Time one of the “most important albums in country music.” After seeing it performed live, I would have to agree.
“Time flies when you’re…Killin’ Time!” commented Black. “My band and I are very excited to play the album top to bottom. Revisiting these songs has been inspiring and we can’t wait to hit the road and play it for the fans!”
I also would like to give a shoutout to Black’s amazing band. Two of the team have been with him since the onset and they regularly break into jam sessions unlike any I had seen from a country band. They are superbly talented and tight.
You should do everything possible to see Clink Black and his band in person this year. You won’t regret it.

Celebrating The Album That Started It All
Country icon Clint Black, one of the truest traditionalist in music over the last three decades, will celebrate the 35 th anniversary of his debut album Killin’ Time , on tour in 2024. For the first time ever, he’ll play the groundbreaking record live start to finish followed by more of his legendary hits.
A true triple threat singer/guitarist/songwriter, Black has sold more than twenty million records, written and recorded twenty-two #1 singles, and has been awarded nearly two-dozen gold and platinum awards, a GRAMMY, and numerous CMA, ACM and American Music Awards. He’s a member of the Grand Ole Opry and has been honored with stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Nashville Walk of Fame. His musical style encompasses traditional country, honky-tonk and Western Swing. From the beginning, Black’s biggest influences were Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and especially Merle Haggard, to whom his smooth baritone voice was initially compared.
Now, Black revisits the album that started it all , Killin’ Time , with a special world tour.

Standing at Concerts
Standing and Dancing at Concerts: DPAC is proud to welcome all types of concerts to our stage. Sometimes during the course of a concert performance, audience members will show their enthusiasm by standing and dancing, especially when encouraged by the performers to do so. Unless directed by the show, we do not ever enforce a must sit policy at concerts. For most concerts, this would not be acceptable to the performers on stage who often love it when the crowd is moved enough by the performance to stand. This is especially true for rock shows and for seats closest to the stage.
Please know that DPAC does not have a “no standing” policy and in most situations will allow guests to stand even if they block the view of the stage for other guests. If your view is ever blocked by a standing or dancing guest, please contact an usher and we’ll attempt to find alternative seating.
- Most tickets buyers purchase right from our website using the Buy Ticket s button on this page.
- In addition to purchasing online, DPAC offers several other ways to purchase the seats you want to the best Broadway, concerts, comedy, family shows and special events in North Carolina.
- Our computerized ticket system enables you equal access to great DPAC seats whether you buy online, by phone, or in person at DPAC.
- For more details, visit our Purchase Seats page for complete information on purchasing great seats for all events at DPAC.
- All tickets for DPAC events are fully digital and only accessible via your mobile device. A mobile ticket is the safest, most convenient, and flexible way to receive and manage your tickets while increasing protection against fraud. To learn more about mobile entry, please visit our Mobile Entry FAQ .
Video Screens
Currently, this event has not approved using our video screens. Please feel free to check back closer to the event for updates. If approved, we will post notice here.
For many concert, comedy, and special events at DPAC, we offer added views of the stage with two big screens (size: 16’ x 9’) hung to the sides of the stage or above the stage. These big screens can add to the visual experience of our concert, comedy, and special events and give guests seated farther from the stage what we like to call “a tenth row view”. Approval to use these screens always rests with the visiting show and about half of all concert and comedy events do use these screens.

Along the way, Clint has sold over 20 million records, earned more than a dozen gold and platinum awards in the U.S. and Canada including a Grammy, landed nearly two dozen major awards and nominations, and earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In addition to touring throughout North America, Clint hosts his own television talk show Talking In Circles on Circle TV.
