GoReady Travel Insurance Review — Is it Worth It?

Do I Need Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance and covid-19, single-trip plans, annual/multiple-trip insurance policies, how to obtain a quote, goready vs. credit card travel insurance, goready vs. other travel insurance companies, how to file a claim with goready travel insurance, final thoughts.

Travel insurance is one of those things you don’t know you need until it’s too late — or you read an in-depth review of one, like GoReady Insurance.

GoReady (formerly APRIL Travel Protection) is underwritten by Aegis General Insurance Agency. This is an independently owned insurance provider , meaning Aegis can pick and choose who it works with to provide services for its Go Ready travel insurance policies. This is different from most websites that are run by an underwriting company itself.

Aegis General Insurance Agency is a Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, company founded in 1977, focusing on property insurance. The company was acquired by K2 Insurance Services in 2013, but Aegis remains an independent operating company. Aegis acquired French company April Travel Insurance in 2021 , and it’s under that division of Aegis that the travel insurance branch, now called GoReady, still operates.

Aegis General Insurance Agency has a “Good” financial strength rating from A.M. Best . The company provides quotes and accepts claims via phone, website, and online chat.

Let’s look at what GoReady travel insurance policies cover to see if they mesh with your upcoming trip.

Travel insurance , like other types of insurance, protects the money you’ve invested in your vacation against losses from the unexpected, such as a canceled trip or delayed or lost luggage. The more your trip costs, the more it makes sense to protect your financial investment with a travel insurance policy.

Travel insurance can protect more than your money, though. It can provide medical coverage in case you or someone in your family becomes ill or gets injured while traveling.

Here are key reasons why buying a travel insurance policy can make sense:

  • Your existing healthcare coverage won’t apply at your destination or won’t cover some of the activities you’re planning.
  • Your vacation involves nonrefundable deposits or prepayments you would lose if you cancel your trip at the last minute.
  • Medical facilities at your destination may not be sufficient, meaning you could need a costly medical evacuation if you get injured.
  • You have a complex itinerary, moving between several locations and creating more opportunities for luggage to get lost along the way or for delays to create problems further down the line.

Travel insurance may not make sense for every trip, but if you’ve invested significant money in a trip or are worried about the medical facilities at your destination, having a travel insurance policy makes sense.

COVID-19 has affected nearly every corner of the planet. All GoReady travel insurance plans include pandemic coverage for COVID-19.

What benefits are included can vary by plan, though. For example, all plans can reimburse you for trip cancellations if you have to stay home after testing positive for COVID-19.

Premium plans, however, can provide additional coverage, reimbursing you for flight change fees after you test positive and even providing coverage if your babysitter or business partner tests positive, forcing you to alter your trip plans. And all plans cover quarantine obligations should you test positive while traveling.

COVID 19 nasal swab test

Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) coverage is an optional upgrade when purchasing a travel insurance plan. It can provide additional benefits if you cancel a trip because of COVID-19 — but it likely won’t provide a 100% refund. Coverage is for up to 75% of nonrefundable costs, and you must add CFAR within 14 days of your first trip deposit.

A few other situations worth considering:

  • At-home tests are not considered sufficient proof to invoke coverage.
  • If your plan includes medical expenses, the benefit should apply if you become sick with COVID-19 during a trip.
  • If you are forced to quarantine, your plan should remain in effect until the quarantine ends, and trip cancellation, interruption, and medical expense benefits should apply.

What Policies Are Available With GoReady Travel Insurance?

GoReady provides 2 main general of plans : those for a single trip and those covering a full year of multiple trips.

Within the single-trip plans are several options. Let’s compare the 4 most popular.

  • Go Ready Choice Plan offers the most basic coverage , including the option to upgrade your plan with add-ons
  • Go Ready VIP Plan offers higher coverage limits and more types of coverage
  • Go Ready Pandemic Plus Plan focuses on you or a travel companion testing positive for COVID-19 , with most of its coverage focusing on medical benefits but not delayed luggage or injuries during your trip
  • Go Ready Cruise Plan focuses on specific concerns for cruise ship passengers , like missed ports of call and missed connections

The Trip Inconvenience clause on the VIP plan provides a unique benefit , insuring you for missed work from your transportation carrier’s delay or when key aspects of your trip are canceled for weather or mechanical reasons, such as at amusement parks or golf courses. Add-ons are also available for lost or delayed business equipment and sports equipment, and CFAR is available with all plans for an additional cost .

It’s also possible to purchase an annual travel insurance plan, effective on a date of your choosing. Along with differences in coverage types and maximum payouts, the 2 plans have different maximum trip lengths for any single trip within the year.

If you will take multiple trips over the next year, an annual plan could be cheaper than multiple single-trip plans.

To get a quote for GoReady travel insurance, head to goreadyinsurance.com .

GoReady travel insurance get quote

Click on the option for a single trip or annual travel next to “ I need a quote for ,” then fill out the information.

For a single trip, fill out the cost of your trip, ages of the travelers, and the date of your initial trip payment. Provide travel dates and destinations.

For an annual policy, you don’t have to provide destinations or travel dates. Instead, you choose an effective date for the policy and provide traveler ages.

GoReady travel insurance get quote annual plan

Note that policies aren’t effective in certain countries. Many of these are expected, such as North Korea and Syria, but you may be surprised to learn that Peru isn’t a covered destination . If you’re planning to hike the Inca Trail or visit Machu Picchu, this policy isn’t for you.

The next page shows prices for your plan options and allows you to compare them.

GoReady travel insurance annual plan prices

If you’re shopping for a single-trip plan, the website will show you the most popular plans, as well as other potential offerings like one centered on vacation rentals and a plan purely focused on trip cancellations .

GoReady travel insurance single trip prices

Again, the layout allows you to compare inclusions, exclusions, and add-ons side by side.

If you’re considering any adventure activities or extreme sports during your trip, the trip cancellation policy isn’t for you. It includes these exclusions: “mountain climbing, bungee cord jumping, skydiving, parachuting, hang gliding, parasailing, caving, extreme skiing, heli-skiing, skiing outside marked trails, boxing, full contact martial arts, scuba diving below 120 feet (40 meters) or without a dive master, or travel on any air-supported device, other than on a regularly scheduled airline or air charter company.”

How GoReady Compares to Other Insurance

Inside your wallet, you may have a  credit card with travel insurance . Coverage from a credit card may be sufficient for quick, simple, or trips without costly upfront payments, but it doesn’t include everything that a comprehensive travel insurance policy covers.

Let’s compare GoReady’s best policy against 2 premium credit cards with robust insurance coverage:  The Platinum Card ®  from American Express  and the  Chase Sapphire Reserve ® . Note that you may have to enroll for some of the Amex benefits described below.

While the credit cards both provide rental car coverage as an included benefit, this is an add-on with GoReady. GoReady also doesn’t include emergency evacuation coverage in its VIP plan, and its travel and emergency assistance services are considered secondary coverage.

GoReady does come out ahead in other areas , though. Its emergency medical and dental maximums are much higher than the credit card providers’, and it provides up to 175% reimbursement for trip interruption — rather than a fixed amount or simply reimbursing the money you lost.

Credit card insurance policies are not all the same. Read about our favorite cards for travel protection plans !

To compare GoReady against competitors, we used Squaremouth , a travel insurance shopping and comparison website. We looked for a 1-week policy for the following sample trip:

  • 2 travelers
  • Ages 40 and 38
  • Going to Jamaica 6 months from now
  • Trip cost: $3,000
  • Initial trip deposit paid within the last 24 hours
  • State of residence: California

The Go Ready Choice Plan was nearly the same price as the Nationwide Essential plan, offering the same coverage for COVID-19 and trip cancellation benefits. However, GoReady only required a 6-hour delay for hurricane and weather benefits, and it offered a 150% trip interruption maximum, rather than 125% for Nationwide.

Seven Corners cost the most of these 3 options, yet it had the lowest coverage for trip interruption. It also had the longest delay requirement for hurricane and weather issues.

Goready insurance comparison cancellation and interruption

For delay and baggage benefits, GoReady had the highest maximum travel delay payout — more than 3 times what Nationwide and Seven Corners offered. However, GoReady wouldn’t provide any reimbursement for expenses until your bags are delayed for 24 hours, while Nationwide’s coverage would kick in at 12 hours. Seven Corners’ coverage would take effect after just 6 hours.

GoReady insurance comparison baggage and loss

GoReady’s lost luggage benefit didn’t stipulate any per-item maximums, unlike with competitors, and it offered the same maximum as Seven Corners. Nationwide offered up to $600 here, rather than the $500 its competitors did.

You can file a claim online . Fill out the requested information and upload your supporting documents.

GoReady file a claim

It’s also possible to start a claim via online chat on the website or by calling 866-516-8592 and selecting the third option. Most claims are processed within 7 to 10 business days, according to GoReady.

If you’re experiencing an issue that should be covered by your policy, you may not need to pay for expenses up front and submit a claim for reimbursement . GoReady’s Stress Less Benefits are included in all plans and can provide direct payments to hospitals, airlines, or evacuation services on your behalf so you can avoid fronting the cost.

GoReady travel insurance, part of the Aegis General Insurance Agency, provides single-trip and annual travel insurance policies that you can customize in multiple ways. Given the range of policies, there should be something to suit most travelers. GoReady offers notable types of coverage you don’t see everywhere, such as for trip inconvenience and delayed sports equipment.

However, every trip you take is unique, and you should evaluate every insurance plan carefully to see what coverage works best for you. Every policy will have inclusions and exclusions, so ensure you read these carefully before purchasing. Having a policy that doesn’t cover your destination or intended activities is the same as not having a policy at all.

Always read the fine print!

I am a european expat living in the US and my annual premium with April International is $6000. I am in the process of trying to get April International to cover an MRI I need because of pain I am experiencing in my pelvis. The cause is unknown but could be fibroids, endometriosis, adenomyosis, pelvic inflammatory disease… it is impossible to tell without the MRI. This is affecting my health and potentially my future fertility. They refuse to cover an MRI to diagnose my condition despite my Doctor submitting multiple requests and also refused a peer to peer review suggested by my doctor (standard practice in the US if an insurance company denies a claim) to go over my symptoms and case in more detail. They refused this review with the reasoning that their medical board is in France. They have phones and computers in France so not sure why this is an acceptable reason when I pay $6000 per year for their services.

My Doctor says this is one of the worst experiences she has ever had with an insurance company denying essential care. In my Doctors words they are refusing to cover anything to do with female reproductive organs and my uterus. I am an otherwise healthy woman in her mid thirties with no other claims made on this insurance aside from the usual annual Doctors appointments and their refusal to cover essential gynecological care and imaging that is needed to diagnose the cause of my pain is in my mind sexual discrimination. I would advise all women to use another provider for health cover and avoid April International for themselves and their families.

The Choice plan offered the most amount of coverage vs. other plans I looked at and it was around 7% cheaper, which is why I purchased it.

Reviewed Aug. 9, 2022

This insurance is a scam. They will do anything to avoid paying you. The customer support is incompetent. I was on a trip to Canada when I got covid. I contacted the insurance right away to make sure I have all the right documentation to get compensated later. They did not reply, and, later claimed that my documentation was invalid (when I recovered and it was too late to get a positive test). I have already filed one BBB complaint which helped to get the claim filed. They promised to process the claim within a week, but there is still no response/communication after a month and two follow up emails from me. I am about to file a second BBB complaint and get help from a lawyer.

The insured was mistakenly dealing with our 24/7 emergency assistance team instead of the claims department. We got her claims initiated in the correct way & quickly reviewed. The insured is still missing properly completed claim forms & a clear copy of her travel itinerary. We tried reaching out to the insured twice without any success or a response. As soon as those last 2 items are received, her claim will be adjudicated accordingly.

Reviewed June 19, 2022

Updated on 08/26/2022: So I put in a review of the above company and they then responded publicly that I had not provided the correct information for my claim and that they had requested it more than once previously. As I was unable to respond publicly I would like to get it out there that this company does not provide the service that they claim. I provided all documentation requested and the documentation they say was missing was provided twice. They stall in the hope you will forget about it. It is now nearly 9 months that I put in my claim and I have not heard a single thing from the claims adjuster since I provided the "missing" documentation. I have put in a complaint with the Department of Banking and Insurance and have spoken with a lawyer. These companies should not be allowed to take advantage of people and get rich from people that trust their fake promises.

Original Review: I wish I had found this site before buying travel insurance with April Travel Insurance/Broadspire. I purchased travel insurance with this company in December 2021 for a family trip to the UK. Unfortunately, while there, I got covid and so we had to cancel some events and stay a few more days giving us extra expenses. When I tried to put in a claim in for the extra expenses and also theatre tickets that we were unable to use because of covid their website would not let me upload the documentation they requested so I had to mail my claim to them but I received acknowledgement on January 11th that they have received it.

Since then I have heard nothing. I received a letter dated May 6 requesting documentation that they already have. I have tried to speak to the representative dealing with my case numerous time and still have yet to speak with them. I have been told by other staff that I should give it a few more weeks and that they would get a manager onto it and again no response. I believe that they do this in the hope you will forget about it, they take your money and refuse your calls, correspondence and claims.

It appears that this insured had not provided the proof of payment their adjuster had requested for theater tickets they were asking to be reimbursed. This request from their claims adjuster was made more than once & the insured finally provided that information about 1 week ago. Their claim will be reassessed shortly.

For your own peace of mind and safety, please don't buy travel insurance from this company, it's just a waste of money!! There won't be any protection. The first time I wrote the review, they reach out to me after how many times call and email sent. They explained to me what is the problem, which shouldn't be a problem if they have a PROPER communication. After I got what they want and sent it via email, same thing happened. As if they never exist!!! What a lousy company!

Original Review: Bought it when I traveled to Singapore Dec 2021. The cheapest travel insurance indeed, but please buy from reputable insurance company. I got contacted with Norovirus. Went to emergency and hospitalized for 1 day plus CT scan. It costs me 5k. Until now May 2022, no news, no good intention in paying my claim. I've been calling and emailing for several times, submit all required docs. It's a scam!!! Wonder why they let this company operate in US.

We spoke with this client to get them to understand what their claims adjuster had been asking them for. Hopefully, they will provide that soon so their claim can be reviewed and adjudicated accordingly.

I purchased insurance for travel to Italy during Covid. I was reassured that they would cover claims for Covid related incidents. Customer service returned my questions within a day when I tested positive while in Rome. They told me to make sure I keep receipts and results on any additional costs incurred. I felt great that I had purchased this insurance before I left, UNTIL I came back and that’s when the problems started. I was sure to upload all of the required documents right away. I submitted my information on 2/13/22, “ Please allow 2-3 business days for the completion of this review.” it is now 4/22/22 and have yet to hear from my adjuster, Quinton L. I have left many messages, tried to speak to supervisors, talked to many customer service agents that have been unable to get me connected to anyone who can help. Don’t waste your money on April insurance now GoReady Insurance.

We responded to this client privately 3 days after their review was posted. Apparently, their claim was paid but the insured never received the check. Their address changed from the time they originally bought their policy, so we reissued them another check to their new location.

July 2021 we purchased travel insurance from April Travel. We left on a small boat out of Portugal returning Oct. 25. I damaged a tooth and made an appointment asap. April Insurance has done nothing but drag this case out, asking for additional information and transferring my claim to 5 different departments. After over 30 phone calls, never returned, emails, etc. I was informed this claim would not be honored because work was not attended to until November 22. Again I sent information information starting my first dentist visit was November 2. This has been major work, a 4 tooth bridge with two extractions. It is now April 12, 2022 and next week I hope to have this work completed.

After 6 months of waiting, Lisa **, the adjusted, actually phoned me to say this claim won't be honored since I didn't go to a dentist on Portugal. We were on a small ship, 74 passengers, and floating down the Duro River. I only wish I had read the reviews before we purchased the insurance. The coverage would have been a drop in the bucket compared to the thousands of dollars I have spent, but worse of all the stress and health issues this has caused me. I would advise consumers to Never, Ever use this company. Barbara **. Case **

This insured did not understand that ALL travel insurance policies coverage ends once you return home. This insured sought dental treatment after they returned from their trip & expected their travel insurance policy to pay for it. There is no company offering travel insurance in the United States that would pay for that situation. The insured hung up on us when our claims department tried explaining this to her.

I am a European expat living in the US and my annual premium with April International is $6000. I am in the process of trying to get April International to cover an MRI I need because of pain I am experiencing in my pelvis. The cause is unknown but could be fibroids, endometriosis, adenomyosis, pelvic inflammatory disease... it is impossible to tell without the MRI.

In my Doctor's words they are refusing to cover anything to do with female reproductive organs and my uterus. I am an otherwise healthy woman in her mid thirties with no other claims made on this insurance aside from the usual annual Doctor's appointments and their refusal to cover essential gynecological care and imaging that is needed to diagnose the cause of my pain is in my mind sexual discrimination. I would advise all women to use another provider for health cover and avoid April International for themselves and their families.

Unfortunately, you've contacted & provided a review with the wrong company. We are APRIL Travel Protection which sells short-term travel insurance (typically for leisure vacations) strictly to U.S. residents. On February 20, 2020 nearly one year ago I purchased a ticket to a conference event that was scheduled for August 14, 2020 In Los Angeles, California. I purchased insurance on this ticket via April Travel Protection. As the date was approaching, due to Covid the event was rescheduled not once but twice and subsequently canceled. The date was moved to November 2020 in New York and then changed again to California for December 2020 before being canceled completely. Attendees received no correspondence from the event or insurance provider. They discontinued use of their social media and website and have stopped giving updates and responding to requests. Many like myself have lost airlines fees and ticket fees with no communication from both the event and April Travel Protection. In addition to their canceling of the event and unprofessionalism I have had both illness and surgery.

I had surgery September 2020 and my doctor provided documentation that I will not be able to travel. Despite me giving ample documentation from my doctor and the fact that this event may not even occur! April Travel protection has refused to refund my ticket. I submitted this evidence in November and despite hearing nothing from their claim adjuster while they "reviewed" for three months, they finally reached back out and refused to issue a refund. Not only was this event canceled, but additionally my doctor said I cannot fly or travel.

I know that covid may cause companies to lose money but is not appropriate for them to deny refunds and pocket consumers money for events that did not occur. Also, they were very inappropriate with regards to my medical records. My doctor said he did not clear me to travel. They then went back and forth requesting more and more of my medical records and personal information debating with my doctor. Please do not purchase insurance with this company. They do not act fairly or appropriately. It is a scam.

This insured's claim was denied as they underwent an elective, not emergency treatment. Cancellation insurance does not reimburse for situations that the insured has the discretion to undergo if & when they want.

It's worth noting that prior to filing a claim due to this elective procedure, they originally tried using their fear of COVID as the reason they didn't want to attend their event. Eventually, their event was cancelled so they were fully refunded for their ticket & insurance monies.

I purchased cruise insurance from April Insurance for a 14 day cruise. I paid $1,100 for insuring my wife and myself. My cruise was canceled because of the pandemic. My cruise company was kind enough to apply my cruise cost to a shorter 10 day cruise we booked for a later date, as well as giving me credit for the four days we will not be using.

I contacted April Insurance to ask for a refund of the difference between the 14 day cruise insurance and the 10 day cruise insurance. I was told they do not refund monies once you pay for the policy. I was also informed that if I had paid for a 10 day cruise which was canceled and then decided to book a 14 day cruise instead, I would have to pay for the additional 4 days. That is understandable. But not returning monies for a shortened cruise is UNFAIR! What is the justification to charge more for extra days and not refund for fewer days? We cruise often, and there are plenty of other companies that will be quite happy to get my and your business. Every business I know of is making many allowances because of situations resulting from the pandemic. As far as I'm concerned, April Insurance is not one of them.

We have been in contact with Mr. Richard and were able to grant an exception for his unique situation. He has received his settlement and is very pleased with the outcome.

Well once again I've been suckered by the insurance industry and their complete unwillingness to fulfill liability. My April Travel Ins policy for trip dated 3-6-2020 to 3-14-2020 where I encountered a flight delay and diversion to Newark instead of JFK claim denied! Now I was not trying to claim more than only my transportation from Newark back to Kennedy airport. A $60 SUV rental to fit equipment and luggage plus the port authority and Triboro Bridge auth. tolls of $25.00. I was also going to ask for my United airline equipment baggage $200 fee but Swiss Air proved to be very generous and understanding about reimbursing that. So for $85 April Ins. asks for you to stand on your head so that they can take refuge behind what they want to be caused by Pandemic that had not yet been declared! Do not buy travel Ins. It is an absolute joke to make a claim!!

Unfortunately, Charles never filed a claim so it's not accurate that his claim was denied. Following this review, our Claims Manager contacted & assisted Charles in opening his claim which will be adjudicated according to the terms & conditions of the policy. He was formerly advised of the benefits of the policy, what items are eligible for reimbursement, & under what conditions, so perhaps that's what he was referring to. We'll be happy to answer or assist Charles in any other was necessary.

I made a claim on my travel protection policy (trip had to be canceled for medical reasons not related to covid). April honored my claim in small part and, after hemming and hawing, eventually denied it in large part. The adjuster was not knowledgeable and when I pointed to the fact that her reason for denial is squarely contrary to the language of the policy, she ignored me. I am pursuing legal action against them and expect to assert a bad faith claim. Highly recommend that potential customers look elsewhere. In my case they ignored the provisions of their own policy and basically tried to rewrite it. Expect that the is SOP for them and they will probably do the same with others.

As William noted, he was reimbursed by April for the non-refundable items encountered. However, he was offered vouchers from his travel supplier which is considered compensation & was denied additional reimbursement for this. William states he never received these vouchers and preferred to receive cash refund. The travel supplier noted his comp would be after April 2021. Displeased with this outcome, William pursued legal action, which was settled this month to the satisfaction of both parties.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Belgian family of four was on their fourth trip to the United States. They had been dreading the long line at passport control when they entered the country but had heard about a new app they could use to ease their way and decided to give it a shot. Within minutes, they had bypassed the long line at Washington Dulles International Airport and were waiting for their luggage.

“It was always a long row," said Piet De Staercke of the line to go through passport screening. He, his wife and two sons were visiting Washington and Chicago. “We were a bit scared. But now with the app, it’s amazing.”

As travel continues to boom following coronavirus pandemic-related slumps, U.S. Customs and Border Protection is expanding the use of technology like the Mobile Passport Control app the De Staercke family used in an effort to process the ever-growing number of passengers traveling internationally. And with events like a rare solar eclipse , the Olympics in Paris, and summer holidays still driving international travel, those numbers don't look set to drop anytime soon.

Customs and Border Protection officials gave The Associated Press a behind-the-scenes look at some of the technologies they've been using and what to expect in the months and years ahead.

THE NUMBERS

During fiscal year 2023, the agency processed over 394 million travelers at the ports of entry. That's a 24% increase over the previous year. When looking at the country’s top 20 airports by passenger volume, officers processed 31% more travelers while average wait times increased 11%. And at some of the busiest airports, the wait times have had negligible increases or even decreased. At JFK Airport in New York, for example, wait times went down — by 0.4 of a second on average — while CBP officers processed 33% more travelers.

Increasingly, people are traveling internationally with their families rather than going abroad alone for business.

Officials are moving more toward app-based technologies to speed passengers' movement through the airport. The Mobile Passport Control app used by the Belgian family is one example. It's available to U.S. citizens, but also to lawful permanent residents, certain Canadians and travelers from countries who are part of the Visa Waiver Program who've already been to the U.S. at least once.

Passengers upload their photos and information to the app. When they enter the screening area, they get routed to a separate line. The officer then just needs to take a photo of one member of the family and it pulls up the entire group's photos and their information.

CBP launched the app in 2021 but is now trying to get more people to use it, including by working with airlines to allow the app to be downloaded while the plane is in flight and putting up signs at airports to let travelers know about it. Last year, a record 4.1 million people came into the country using the app.

“Any second that we can save through the process, it saves time because it adds up eventually,” said Marc Calixte, the top CBP official at Dulles.

Last September, the agency also created an app specifically for passengers who use Global Entry. That's one of the “Trusted Traveler” programs CBP runs that allows certain low-risk passengers who make an appointment for an interview and submit to a background check to travel through customs and passport control more quickly when they arrive in the U.S.

IMPROVEMENTS TO GLOBAL ENTRY

Last year saw a record 3.2 million people apply to the Global Entry program, and this year the agency is on track to field about 4 million applications, said Brendan Blackmer, CBP branch chief for the Trusted Traveler Programs. But passengers have complained about how long it can take to get applications processed and their struggles to get appointments. On its website, CBP says it averages four to six months to process applications. In February, 17 members of Congress wrote to CBP demanding information, saying they were fielding complaints from constituents over the wait times.

Blackmer said the agency has pushed to improve the process, including by allowing nearly 100% of people renewing their status to do so without having to come into an enrollment center. That frees up appointments for first-time applicants. And it's pushing for more people to be able to complete the process while they're in the airport, either leaving or returning from a trip.

There are also more appointments available, Blackmer said, although some cities like San Francisco are still seeing so much demand that appointments can take more than 90 days to get.

“We’ve done a lot of work the past year and a half, and the agency’s in a better position now and able to meet the demand for the program. And we’re going to continue to work,” Blackmer said.

FEE INCREASES

Come Oct. 1, people using some of the Trusted Traveler Programs will see increases to the fees they pay. The cost of NEXUS, a U.S.-Canadian program designed to ease travel between the two countries for pre-approved travelers, will go from $50 to $120. Global Entry will go from $100 to $120. SENTRI, for pre-approved travelers on the southern border with Mexico, will go down, from $122.50 to $120.

But the fees will now cover all kids under 18 regardless of which program you're in.

What's unchanged is that approval for the programs will still be good for five years.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Calixte said possibly by the end of summer the airport will be opening so-called E-Gates where passengers using Global Entry can use the app, bypass an officer at a booth, and instead go to a gate where their photo is taken and matched to their passport, and, assuming no red flags arise, the gates open and they pass out of the customs and passport control area and are on their way.

Further on the horizon, Blackmer said the agency is exploring a concept called smart queuing, where the app assigns passengers to certain lines depending on information they have entered into the app, such as whether they have goods to declare.

Helpful Tips for Planning Your Solar Eclipse Trip

T here are few natural phenomena that can evoke the same emotion of a solar eclipse . Around the world, myths and legends have developed to explain the rare event, which happens when the shadow of the moon blocks the light from the sun, causing a period of temporary darkness in the middle of the day. In ancient China, eclipses were said to signal that the sun was being devoured by a dragon, while in South America, subjects of the Inca Empire believed it signaled the sun god’s anger at the world.

On April 8, 2024, those in Canada, the U.S., and Mexico will have the opportunity to view a total solar eclipse for themselves. TIME spoke to veteran solar eclipse travelers for tips, so that anyone planning a solar eclipse trip can get the most out of the experience.

What to consider before you embark on a solar eclipse trip

Travel to the path of totality.

Most places on the eclipse path will only be able to experience a partial solar eclipse, where the sun is not completely covered by the moon. Many people assume that might be enough, but to really experience what a solar eclipse feels like, you should travel to the path of totality, where the sun is 100% covered. “A partial eclipse is not an eclipse. It really does not come close. You need to be in the path of totality to really experience it,” Paul Bryans, a project scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, tells TIME.

To check if a location is in the line of totality, you can use this map . Places within the line of totality are shaded in the darkest shade of red.

Weather conditions

Another thing to think about when considering where to travel for a solar eclipse is the weather conditions in different places along the line of totality. You might not get the full experience if it is cloudy outside. When there are clouds blocking the sun and the moon, the eclipse effects are much less dramatic.

One way to avoid this problem is to choose a place along the line of totality with a high chance of sunny weather. For the eclipse in 2024, many of the places with the highest expected chances of sunny weather are in Mexico. If you would rather stay in the U.S. for the duration of the eclipse, many places in Texas are also expected to have good weather conditions. As a general rule for the 2024 eclipse, the further south along the eclipse line you go, the better your chances of good weather. “When you get to the northern parts, you have a much higher possibility of being disappointed,” Brian McGee, founder of Astro Trails , a company that leads solar eclipse tours, tells TIME.

Book accommodations and tickets in advance

Every expert TIME spoke with warned about how quickly accommodations and travel tickets sell out in places where the eclipse will happen. You can expect Airbnbs and hotel prices to go up dramatically for dates close to or during the eclipse. Transportation may also take way longer than usual. Traffic jams caused by tourists flocking into cities to catch the solar eclipse might make your travel time significantly longer so you should plan accordingly. During the 2017 solar eclipse, major traffic jams were recorded in Wyoming and Kentucky . The streets did not return to normal until approximately nine hours after the eclipse ended.

Whatever you do, make sure to arrive at your destination several hours before the eclipse starts. “It's going to be crazy on the day of the eclipse. So my advice to people is if they're going to travel, either by car or by airplane, do it early. Don't leave it until Monday, April 8,” John Gianforte, director of the observatory at the University of New Hampshire, tells TIME.

What to consider during your solar eclipse trip

Protect your eyes.

During the build up towards the solar eclipse, many people like to observe the sun to watch as the moon slowly covers more and more of it. However, if you want to view this period of partial eclipse, it is critical to use proper eye protection. “The fact that there is an eclipse doesn't make it any more dangerous to look at the sun, but it makes people want to look at the sun,” says Gianforte.

Regular sunglasses do not provide enough protection for observing the eclipse, but the American Astronomical Society has a list of eclipse eye protection suppliers that meet the international safety standards. If you already wear eyeglasses, make sure the solar filter is placed on the outside of your glasses. Similarly, if you are viewing the partial eclipse through a camera, you need to make sure there is a certified solar filter on top of your camera lens. These filters are designed to protect your camera and your eyes from the dangerous portions of the sun's radiation. Whatever lens you view the eclipse through, “the closest thing to the sun has to be the filter,” says Gianforte.

april travel protection

During totality, remove eye protection

A common misconception about solar eclipses is that you must keep your solar protection glasses on at all times. However, if you are in the path of totality and the sun is 100% covered by the moon, you can look directly at the eclipse without eye protection. The eclipse veterans TIME spoke with strongly recommended removing solar protection from both your eyes and camera equipment during the period of totality to truly take in the experience. “Once there's totality then you should absolutely take your glasses off and look directly at the sun,” says Bryans. “If you don’t do that you’ll miss a lot of the most interesting parts of it.”

However, it is important to remember that for the 2024 eclipse, the period of totality will last for a maximum of four and a half minutes according to NASA . Make sure to check the exact timing of totality in the place where you are viewing the eclipse from, and immediately resume using solar filters right before the period of totality ends.

Observe your surroundings

One of the most fascinating things to observe during an eclipse is not just the eclipse itself, but also the way the environment around you changes. During the period of totality, you’ll be able to feel the temperature drop by about 10°F. Animals such as birds, cats, and dogs, may start to act differently as they grapple with the confusion of the sun suddenly disappearing in the middle of the day. You may even be able to see some brighter stars and planets when you look at the sky once the sun is covered up.

What to consider after your solar eclipse trip

Journal about your experience.

After the eclipse, you may want to journal about your thoughts and feelings to help remember the experience and take in the beauty of what you just witnessed. Seeing an eclipse can sometimes cause people to feel overwhelmed with emotion, and journaling can be a good way to process those feelings. “It’s one of the most emotion-evoking natural events that you can see,” says Gianforte. “It’s like if you go to the Grand Canyon or Mount Everest… it's just hard to explain it. Everyone should, at least once in their life, see a total solar eclipse.”

Wait until the next day to travel back, if possible

Just as you may anticipate traffic jams on the way there, you should also expect similar delays on the way back. It’s a good idea to hang around an extra day since it could help you avoid congestion on the roads.

How to stay safe during the April 8 solar eclipse

Here's how to protect your eyes and stay safe during the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024.

A girl observes the total solar eclipse with solar eclipse glasses at Times Square in New York City, United States on August 21, 2017.

1. Get certified eclipse glasses ahead of the event

2. know when to use solar eclipse glasses, 3. prepare for backcountry travel, 4. pay attention to weather and conditions, 5. stay safe in cities, 6. don't get lost, and avoid traffic jams.

A solar eclipse will be visible across North America on April 8 .

Everyone in the U.S. will see at least a partial solar eclipse , but only those within the 115-mile-wide (185 kilometers) path of totality will witness the sun's face completely blocked by the moon's shadow for up to 4 minutes, 28 seconds.

Only during totality — when the sun's face is completely blocked — is it safe to look at the totally eclipsed sun's corona with the naked eye. At all other times, including during the partial phase of the eclipse, you must wear certified solar eclipse glasses to view the sun.

There are some safety issues to be aware of at other times, too.  Here are six tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable viewing of the solar eclipse.

Solar eclipse glasses are plentiful and inexpensive. Buy them before stocks run low, and get them only from this list of verified suppliers of safe solar filters and viewers on the American Astronomical Society's AAS Solar Eclipse Task Force website. Only then can you be sure that they comply with the ISO 12312-2 international standard, which means they reduce visible sunlight to safe and comfortable levels and block all but a tiny fraction of solar UV and IR radiation.

Do NOT use sunglasses, solar filters meant for cameras and telescopes, smoked glass, welder's goggles, photographic or X-ray film, potato-chip bags or DVDs to view the partially eclipsed sun . None of these methods are safe.

eclipse sequence 2017 showing the sun become increasingly eclipsed by the moon.

You can use solar eclipse glasses to look at the sun anytime. Typically, however, solar eclipse glasses are used to view the sun from the moment the moon starts to cross it — a time known as first contact. You must use solar eclipse glasses to look at the eclipse whenever the sun is only partially covered, which is the entire time on April 8 for most of North America.

Although the path of totality on April 8 will include several major cities and metropolitan areas, it crosses a lot of backcountry. Many people will chase clear skies, which could take them to areas they hadn't planned on visiting. Remote parts of Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, in particular, are short on facilities and gas stations. So bring everything you need, including a full fuel tank and extra food, water, cash and toilet paper.

In April, you can expect the unexpected, with everything from snow in the Northeast to tornadoes in the Midwest. In remote areas of the northeastern U.S. and Canada, the mountains, lakes and forests may provide a beautiful backdrop, but conditions in the backcountry that time of year can be difficult.

"Since visitors may not be familiar with the area's ever-changing weather and early spring conditions, our most important role is to share important information about being safe and well-prepared and about the planned events throughout the region," representatives from the Adirondacks' Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism (ROOST) said in a statement .

ROOST encourages people  to avoid mountain trails and waters. Read up on the climate along the eclipse track , look at weather forecasts and decide the best place to watch the eclipse the day before the event.

If you decide to watch the eclipse from a city sidewalk — perhaps even during a lunch break at work — then watch out. Wandering into roads and other dangerous situations is easier than you might think when you're looking through solar eclipse glasses. The best, easiest and safest eclipse-observing site is an open space or park, which will likely have a much better view of the eclipse than city streets, where buildings could easily block the view.

The biggest cities inside the path are Mazatlán and Torreón, Mexico; San Antonio, Austin and Dallas, Texas; Indianapolis, Indiana; Hamilton, Ontario; Montreal Quebec.

Relocating at the last minute in search of clear weather is not particularly recommended unless the roads are clear and you have multiple backup plans. An excellent way to monitor the traffic situation both before and after the eclipse is to use Google Maps or similar apps to monitor live traffic information.

However, you need to know your destination. A great way to begin your research is to use an interactive eclipse map and note the eclipse schedules for various locations in advance. Fred Espenak's Road Atlas for the Total Solar Eclipse of 2024 and Michael Zeiler's Field Guide to the 2023 and 2024 Solar Eclipses ensure you have a spiral-bound hard copy of the path of totality in case you lose your cellphone connection. A great option is to download the Solar Eclipse Timer App , which provides audio commentary on exactly what to expect and when to expect it and instantly tells you if you're inside the path of totality.

When is the 2024 total solar eclipse? Your guide to glasses, forecast, where to watch.

Editor's note: An updated cloud forecast for the April 2024 total solar eclipse is in. Read the latest eclipse forecast and news as of Monday, April 1 .

We're less than two weeks away from the astronomical event of the decade: A total eclipse of the sun , which will grace the nation's skies from Texas to Maine on the afternoon of Monday, April 8 .

Millions of people are expected to travel to see the spectacle, which will also attract scientists from across the country to study its unique effects on the Earth and its atmosphere . (Meanwhile, brands such as Burger King, Pizza Hut, Applebee's and Sonic are getting in on the eclipse excitement too.)

The full total solar eclipse experience will plunge people along a narrow path into darkness midday, but people outside the path of totality could still use eclipse glasses to see the moon pass in front of the sun. It's an awesome and confusing sight on the ground and in the sky.

It should go without saying: Don't drive while wearing eclipse glasses

One task to do now is to get yourself a pair of special eclipse glasses (and luckily there's still time to score a free pair of eclipse glasses ). They're important eyewear during an eclipse because they will block out the sun's harmful rays, which could damage your eyes when you're looking at the sun — even if it's partially blocked.

Solar eclipse glasses are still readily available from plenty of vendors across the internet as of Thursday, March 28. But be wary of counterfeit or fake glasses , experts warned.

The other big factor everyone's anxiously awaiting is the weather forecast, which most experts say is still a bit far away for a specific forecast. But more detailed, realistic forecasts will start to roll in over the next few days.

Of particular interest will be the cloud forecast , as a deck of thick, low clouds would likely ruin the entire event. But if the clouds are higher up in the atmosphere, such as thin, wispy cirrus , they'd act to diffuse but not ruin the eclipse.

There's plenty to know before the big day, which won't happen again for about two decades . Read on for answers for all your eclipse questions, including how to watch the eclipse , understand the eclipse and use eclipse glasses to stay safe .

WATCHING THE APRIL 2024 ECLIPSE

How do i watch the 2024 solar eclipse.

There are a few ways of watching the eclipse:

  • Get the full experience in person : If you're in a narrow band of U.S. land that spans from Texas to Maine, you could see the moon block the sun and its shadow cast a night-like darkness over Earth for a few minutes. You'll briefly be able to look up without eye protection and see the moon block the sun.
  • Watch from outside the path of totality : Much of the U.S. is set to get a partial view of the eclipse that isn't nearly as impressive as being in the path of totality. Earth won't be plunged into complete darkness and you'll have to wear protective eyewear to see the moon partially block the sun.
  • Watch a livestream : Check back on April 8 for a video feed from the path of totality. It's not the same as being there in person, but hey, at least you won't have to sit in traffic .

Totality explained: The real April 2024 total solar eclipse happens inside the path of totality

What time is the solar eclipse on April 8?

The eclipse will begin in Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT and end in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT, but the exact time of the eclipse varies by where you are in its path.

You can search by zip code to find the exact time for your location.

Where will the April eclipse be visible?

All of the lower 48 U.S. states will see the moon at least clip the sun, but that sight is a trifle compared to being in the path of totality.

Because the narrow path includes or is near some of the nation's largest cities, expect millions of people to crowd into a band of land a little over 100 miles wide that spans from the Texas/Mexico border to the Maine/Canada border.

Here are the major cities in each state where you can expect to experience totality (note that the included times do not account for when the partial eclipse begins and ends):

  • Dallas, Texas: 1:40-1:44 p.m. CDT
  • Idabel, Oklahoma: 1:45-1:49 p.m. CDT
  • Little Rock, Arkansas: 1:51-1:54 p.m. CDT
  • Poplar Bluff, Missouri: 1:56-2:00 p.m. CDT
  • Paducah, Kentucky: 2-2:02 p.m. CDT
  • Carbondale, Illinois: 1:59-2:03 p.m. CDT
  • Evansville, Indiana: 2:02-2:05 p.m. CDT
  • Cleveland, Ohio: 3:13-3:17 p.m. EDT
  • Erie, Pennsylvania: 3:16-3:20 p.m. EDT
  • Buffalo, New York: 3:18-3:22 p.m. EDT
  • Burlington, Vermont: 3:26-3:29 p.m. EDT
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire: 3:27-3:30 p.m. EDT
  • Caribou, Maine: 3:32-3:34 p.m. EDT

Will clouds block the April 2024 eclipse?

It's too soon to say for sure, but history offers some clues.

Chances of cloudy skies are pretty high along much of the eclipse's northern path, and some areas such as Buffalo have about a 1-in-3 chance of clear skies in early April.

Skies are usually more clear to the south. Right along the Texas/Mexico border, chances of a clear sky can be nearly 75%.

However, early forecasts tell a different story — although forecaster caution it's too early for truly accurate forecasts.

Keep in mind that clouds don't always ruin an eclipse . High, wispy clouds won't spoil the show in the same way that low thick clouds would. In that case, you wouldn't be able to see the moon pass in front of the sun, but you would still notice a sudden darkness in the path of totality.

What dangers are associated with the eclipse?

The  eclipse , as exciting and fun as it promises to be, comes with a growing number of safety warnings — both for what will happen in the sky and what will happen on the ground.

In addition to the dangers of looking at the eclipse without proper eyewear, we've heard warnings about potentially dangerous  fake eclipse glasses , the possibility for increased  car  c rashes  around the time of the eclipse — and possible  air travel headaches  due to delayed or cancelled flights.

Where is the best place to watch the eclipse?

In the weeks leading up to the eclipse, Texas was considered the best state for eclipse viewing . Historically, there's a good chance the skies will be clear and its location along the southern path of the eclipse means totality will last a little longer. That could change as the forecast evolves .

A few lucky travelers will also have a front-row seat with unobstructed views — from a plane .

Will traffic be bad?

Most likely, yes — especially after the eclipse ends . Millions of people will crowd into the narrow path of totality, then many will attempt to leave all at once as soon as the eclipse is over.

When a total solar eclipse passed over the U.S. in 2017, reports say some traffic jams didn't fully clear for more than 12 hours. Even worse, a recent study reported that the 2017 eclipse "was associated with increased risks of a fatal traffic crash" – potentially as much as a 31% increase, the study said .

Also worth noting: The eclipse is expected to have impacts for air travel as well.

Cities across the eclipse's path of totality are also bracing for an influx of visitors who are already booking up hotels and short-term vacation rentals , officials have told USA TODAY. "Hotels are almost sold out," said Shalissa Perry, the chief marketing officer for Downtown Dallas.

Why are schools closing for the eclipse?

Primarily out of a concern for students' safety, schools across the country have given students  the day of the eclipse, April 8,  as a day off, a half day or a chance for e-learning. In Tennessee, for example, officials also say it gives students a chance  to experience the eclipse with their family and friends .

What's it like to watch a solar eclipse from space?

Ever wondered what it is like see the  solar eclipse  from space? NASA scientist and veteran astronaut Terry Virts has witnessed the spectacle in space .

"When I was in space in 2015, we saw an eclipse over the North Atlantic," Virts told USA TODAY this week. "It was an eclipse that very few humans saw I think, but it was a really unique experience to look down and just see this big black circle kind of moving across the planet."

"It was unlike anything I've ever seen," Virts adds. "I joke I'm glad they told us there was an eclipse because it would have been unsettling to look down at Earth and see this black spot moving across. It was really cool."

Virts, who is the face of  Sonic's eclipse-themed Blackout Slush Float , said that though he's seen one eclipse from space and many from Earth, he is super excited about the upcoming one on April 8.

UNDERSTANDING THE 2024 ECLIPSE

What is a solar eclipse definition explained..

A total solar eclipse happens when three celestial spheres — the sun, moon and Earth — line up in a specific way in space.

According to NASA, a solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the sun and Earth. That alignment casts a moving shadow on Earth that either fully or partially blocks the sun's light in some areas. This leads to a period of partial or full darkness on a narrow stretch of Earth.

The path is so narrow because of the huge distance and size of the sun — as well as the moon's distance from Earth. That focuses the moon's shadow on an area of land much smaller than the moon itself. The movement of the shadow across the land happens as the Earth's rotation interacts with the orbit of the moon.

A total eclipse only happens occasionally because the moon doesn't orbit in the exact same plane as the sun and Earth do. In addition, a solar eclipse can only happen during a new moon.

What's special about a total solar eclipse?

The total solar eclipse on April 8  is causing such a stir because the rare event is an astronomical experience like no other that will be unusually accessible to millions of people.

April's total solar eclipse will fall over more places in the U.S. than the total eclipse before and after it. And the broad length of the path of totality – where Americans have the best shot of getting a clear view – is "much wider"  than it was for the eclipse in 2017 , according to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

A total solar eclipse is also far more impressive  than a lunar or an annular solar eclipse. During an annular eclipse, the moon covers the Sun but leaves an outside ring some call a "ring of fire" — it darkens the sky instead of plunging Earth into a night-like darkness, which is what happens during a total solar eclipse. And a lunar eclipse – the appearance of a red moon – happens when the moon passes into the Earth's shadow, according to NASA.

Total solar eclipses can have spiritual significance, too . Ancient cultures viewed as a sign of the gods' anger or impending departure. Some religions today are hosting eclipse viewings and services.

Historically, eclipses have left major marks on religious and spiritual civilizations. In Christianity, an eclipse has been associated with the darkness that accompanied Jesus' crucifixion and in Islam, the passing of the Prophet Muhammad's son Ibrahim.

When was the last solar eclipse?

The USA's most recent total solar eclipse was on August 21, 2017, and stretched from Oregon to South Carolina.

When will the next solar eclipse happen?

The  next visible total solar eclipse  to cross over the U.S. after April will come in more than two decades on Aug. 23, 2044, according to NASA.

And that eclipse won't be as accessible as the 2024 one: The path of totality in 2044 will only touch the states of Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society, a nonprofit involved in research, public outreach and political space advocacy. Another total eclipse  will pass over the U.S. in 2045  that will be more accessible to Americans, including for people who live in California, Florida and Nevada.

ECLIPSE GLASSES AND SAFETY

What are eclipse glasses and why are they needed for the eclipse.

Gazing at the bright rays from the eclipse without  protective eyewear  can seriously damage your eye, so wearing a pair of protective glasses is important.

There's a technical standard for eclipse glasses, which are designed to block out most light and let you safely see the moon pass in front of the sun: It's called ISO 12312-2 after the International Organization of Standardization.

While there's concerns that not all glasses marketed as eclipse glasses live up to that standard, experts say in the past, the shortcomings haven't been significant .

But as the 2024 eclipse approaches, the American Astronomical Society  has warned that there are some counterfeit and fake eclipse glasses being sold from unverified vendors that would be unsafe to use during the eclipse. They recommend buying from a vetted vendor and testing the glasses before the eclipse.

How do I get solar eclipse glasses?

You should buy from a reputable source who can ship the glasses to you in time for April 8. A guide to last-minute eclipse glasses explains more.

Heads up: The online marketplace is flooded with retailers selling solar eclipse glasses they claim have the NASA seal of approval . Consider that a red flag to look elsewhere.

How can you test eclipse glasses?

NASA shared an easy method to check eclipse glasses at home.

Buyers should put on their glasses and look at a bright light, like a flashlight. If the light is "extremely dim," or doesn't appear at all, the glasses are safe, Susannah Darling, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, said in an instructional video. Viewers should be able to see the filament of the lightbulb, not the glow surrounding the bulb.

Can you really go blind watching a solar eclipse?

You could severely damage your eyes . Directly staring at the sun before and after the total eclipse, or watching a partial eclipse outside the path of totality without proper eye protection, can result in permanent damage including blurred and altered vision.

While rare, eye damage from watching a partial eclipse happens in part because a person's natural response to squint when looking at sunlight does not get triggered. In the lead-up to the  April 8 solar eclipse ,  doctors and a rare set of eclipse watchers are warning about  watching this planetary event without adequate eclipse glasses or with the naked eye.

It’s hard for experts to know or even estimate how many people experience eye damage from solar eclipses. Since looking at an eclipse does not cause complete blindness, people with permanent damage may not know they have it or report it to a doctor. The 2017 eclipse , which passed from Oregon to South Carolina, is thought to have caused about 100 cases, according to the  American Astronomical Society .

How can I watch the eclipse without glasses?

If you don't have access to eclipse glasses do not use regular sunglasses — You need a more creative solution for safe viewing, like a pinhole projector .

Welding glasses are not recommended for eclipse viewing .

Should I take dogs or cats to see the eclipse? Is it safe for pets?

An eclipse itself isn't dangerous for domestic animals such as dogs and cats, but experts say it's probably best to not bring pets .

Experts' biggest concern is not what’s happening in the sky but on the ground as crowds of excited and anxious people gather, said Dr. Rena Carlson, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

“Rather than the effects of the eclipse, I would be more worried about the excitement and all of the people,” she said.

Another fun way to experience the eclipse: disco balls

Don't just reach for the solar glasses; a disco ball might be a fun and safe way to enhance the total solar eclipse experience .

Inspired by a research paper from European scientists, the Round Rock Public Library in Round Rock, Texas, near Austin, used disco balls during the annular eclipse in October and recommends people do the same for the April 8 eclipse. Officials said the use of a disco ball creates a "party-like atmosphere" to make a solar eclipse event more fun.

The mirrored ball can be placed outside where it can catch the sunlight and reflect it on a shaded wall at least several feet away, or it can be inside near a window to cast reflections of the sun around the room. Youth Services Librarian Andrea Warkentin recommends people get disco balls that have smaller mirrors on them as they will create bigger and better images.

"It's a way to make it really memorable and fun for little kids who may not really understand what's going on in the sky," Warkentin said.

Here’s what you need to know about the earthquake.

Taiwan was rocked Wednesday morning by the island’s strongest earthquake in a quarter century, a magnitude 7.4 tremor that killed at least nine people, injured more than 800 others and trapped dozens of people.

The heaviest damage was in Hualien County on the island’s east coast, a sleepy, scenic area prone to earthquakes. Footage from the aftermath showed a 10-story building there partially collapsed and leaning heavily to one side, from which residents emerged through windows and climbed down ladders, assisted by rescuers. Three hikers were killed after being hit by falling rocks on a hiking trail in Taroko National Park, according to the county government.

By late afternoon, officials said rescue efforts were underway to try to rescue 127 people who were trapped, many of them on hiking trails in Hualien.

One building in Changhua County, on the island’s west coast, collapsed entirely. The quake was felt throughout Taiwan and set off at least nine landslides, sending rocks tumbling onto Suhua Highway in Hualien, according to local media reports. Rail services were halted at one point across the island.

The earthquake, with an epicenter off Taiwan’s east coast, struck during the morning commute, shortly before 8 a.m. Taiwanese authorities said by 3 p.m., more than 100 aftershocks, many of them stronger than magnitude 5, had rumbled through the area.

In the capital, Taipei, buildings shook for over a minute from the initial quake. Taiwan is at the intersection of the Philippine Sea tectonic plate and the Eurasian plate, making it vulnerable to seismic activity. Hualien sits on multiple active faults, and 17 people died in a quake there in 2018.

Here is the latest:

The earthquake hit Taiwan as many people there were preparing to travel for Tomb Sweeping Day, a holiday across the Chinese-speaking world when people mourn the dead and make offerings at their graves. Officials warned the public to stay away from visiting tombs in mountain areas as a precaution, especially because rain was forecast in the coming days.

TSMC, the world’s biggest maker of advanced semiconductors, briefly evacuated workers from its factories but said a few hours later that they were returning to work. Chip production is highly precise, and even short shutdowns can cost millions of dollars.

Lai Ching-te, Taiwan’s vice president, who is also its president-elect, visited the city of Hualien this afternoon to assess the destruction and the rescue efforts, a government announcement said. Mr. Lai, who will become president in May, said the most urgent tasks were rescuing trapped residents and providing medical care. Next, Mr. Lai said, public services must be restored, including transportation, water and power. He said Taiwan Railway’s eastern line could be reopened by Thursday night.

Taiwan’s fire department has updated its figures, reporting that nine people have died and 934 others have been injured in the quake. Fifty-six people in Hualien County remain trapped.

Officials in Taiwan warned residents to not visit their relatives' tombs, especially in the mountains, this weekend during the holiday, known as Ching Ming, meant to honor them. There had already been 100 aftershocks and the forecast called for rain, which could make travel conditions on damaged roads more treacherous.

Crews are working to reach people trapped on blocked roads. As of 1 p.m. local time, roads were impassable due to damage and fallen rock in 19 places, according to the Ministry of Transportation. At least 77 people remain trapped. A bridge before Daqingshui Tunnel appeared to have completely collapsed.

Taiwan’s worst rail disaster in decades — a train derailment in 2021 that killed 49 people — took place on the first day of the Tomb Sweeping holiday period that year, in the same region as the earthquake.

The earthquake hit Taiwan as many people here were preparing to travel for Tomb Sweeping Day, or Ching Ming, a day across the Chinese-speaking world when people mourn their dead, especially by making offerings at their graves. Now those plans will be disrupted for many Taiwanese.

The holiday weekend would typically see a spike in travel as people visit family across Taiwan. Currently, both rail transport and highways are blocked in parts of Hualien, said Transport Minister Wang Guo-cai. Work is underway to restore rail transportation in Hualien, and two-way traffic is expected to be restored at noon on Thursday, he said.

Taiwan’s preparedness has evolved in response to past quakes.

Taiwan’s earthquake preparedness has evolved over the past few decades in response to some of the island’s largest and most destructive quakes .

In the years after a 7.6 magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan killed nearly 2,500 people in 1999, the authorities established an urban search-and-rescue team and opened several emergency medical operation centers, among other measures .

And in 2018, after a quake in the eastern coastal city of Hualien killed 17 people and caused several buildings to partially collapse, the government ordered a wave of building inspections .

Taiwan has also been improving its early warning system for earthquakes since the 1980s. And two years ago, it rolled out new building codes that, among other things, require owners of vulnerable buildings to install ad-hoc structural reinforcements.

So how well prepared was Taiwan when a 7.4 magnitude quake struck near Hualien on Wednesday morning, killing at least seven people and injuring hundreds more?

Across the island, one building collapsed entirely, 15 others were in a state of partial collapse and another 67 were damaged, the island’s fire department said on Wednesday afternoon . Structural engineers could not immediately be reached for comment to assess that damage, or the extent to which building codes and other regulations might have either contributed to it or prevented worse destruction.

As for search-and-rescue preparedness, Taiwan is generally in very good shape, said Steve Glassey, an expert in disaster response who lives in New Zealand.

“ The skill sets, the capabilities, the equipment, the training is second to none,” said Dr. Glassey, who worked with Taipei’s urban search-and-rescue team during the response to a devastating 2011 earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand. “They’re a very sharp operation.”

But even the best urban search-and-rescue team will be stretched thin if an earthquake causes multiple buildings to collapse, Dr. Glassey said.

Taiwan has options for requesting international help with search-and-rescue efforts. It could directly ask another country, or countries, to send personnel. And if multiple teams were to get involved, it could ask the United Nations to help coordinate them, as it did after the 1999 earthquake.

Pierre Peron, a spokesman for the United Nations, said on Wednesday afternoon that no such request had yet been made as a result of the latest earthquake.

Meaghan Tobin contributed reporting.

At least seven people have died and 736 have been injured as a result of the earthquake, according to Taiwan’s fire department. Another 77 people remained trapped in Hualien County, many of them on hiking trails. Search and rescue operations are underway, said the fire department.

Siyi Zhao

Aftershocks of magnitudes between 6.5 and 7 were likely to occur over the next three or four days, said Wu Chien-fu, director of the Taiwanese Central Weather Administration’s Seismology Center, at a news conference.

As of 2 p.m., 711 people had been injured across Taiwan, the fire department said, and 77 people in Hualien County remained trapped. The four who were known to have died were in Hualien.

Victoria Kim

Hualien County is a quiet and scenic tourist destination.

Hualien County on Taiwan’s east coast is a scenic, sleepy tourist area tucked away from the island’s urban centers, with a famous gorge and aquamarine waters. It also happens to sit on several active faults , making it prone to earthquakes.

The county has a population of about 300,000, according to the 2020 census, about a third of whom live in the coastal city of Hualien, the county seat. It is one of the most sparsely populated parts of Taiwan. About three hours by train from the capital, Taipei, the city describes itself as the first place on the island that’s touched by the sun.

Hualien County is home to Taroko National Park, one of Taiwan’s most popular scenic areas. Visitors come to explore the Taroko Gorge, a striated marble canyon carved by the Liwu River, which cuts through mountains that rise steeply from the coast. The city of Hualien is a popular destination as a gateway to the national park.

According to the state-owned Central News Agency, three hikers were trapped on a trail near the entrance to the gorge on Wednesday, after the quake sent rocks falling. Two of them were found dead, the news agency said. Administrators said many roads within the park had been cut off by the earthquake, potentially trapping hikers, according to the report.

Earthquakes have rattled Hualien with some regularity. In 2018, 17 people were killed and hundreds of others injured when a magnitude 6.5 quake struck just before midnight, its epicenter a short distance northeast of the city of Hualien.

Many of the victims in that quake were in a 12-story building that was severely tilted, the first four floors of which were largely crushed, according to news reports from the time. The next year, the area was shaken by a 6.1-magnitude earthquake that injured 17 people.

The area has some of the highest concentrations of Taiwan’s aboriginal population, with several of the island’s Indigenous tribes calling the county home .

The county government in Hualien released a list of people that had been hospitalized with injuries, which stood at 118 people as of midday Wednesday.

Across Taiwan, one building fell down entirely, in Changhua County on the west coast, and 15 buildings partially collapsed, Taiwan’s fire department said. Another 67 buildings were damaged. One of the partially collapsed structures was a warehouse in New Taipei City where four people were rescued, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency. Another 12 were rescued at a separate New Taipei City building where the foundation sank into the ground.

Peggy Jiang, who manages The Good Kid, a children’s bookstore down the street from the partially collapsed Uranus Building in Hualien, said it was a good thing they had yet to open when the quake struck. The area is now blocked off by police and rescue vehicles. “Most people in Hualien are used to earthquakes,” she said. “But this one was particularly scary, many people ran in the street immediately afterward.”

Lin Jung, 36, who manages a shop selling sneakers in Hualien, said he had been at home getting ready to take his 16-month-old baby to a medical appointment when the earthquake struck. He said it felt at first like a series of small shocks, then “suddenly it turned to an intense earthquake shaking up and down.” The glass cover of a ceiling lamp fell and shattered. “All I could do was protect my baby.”

The earthquake damaged buildings and a highway in Hualien.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck Taiwan on Wednesday damaged many buildings and a major highway in Hualien, a city on the eastern coast, and it knocked out power as it rocked the island.

Across Taiwan, the quake and its aftershocks caused one building to completely collapse and 15 others to partially collapse, according to Taiwan’s fire department. Sixty-seven other buildings sustained damage.

Two tall buildings in Hualien that sustained particularly extensive damage were at the center of the rescue efforts there. Most damage across the city was not life-threatening, said Huang Hsuan-wan, a reporter for a local news site.

Where buildings were reported damaged in Hualien City

“A lot of roads were blocked off. There are a lot of walls toppled over onto cars,” Derik du Plessis, 44, a South African resident of Hualien, said shortly after the earthquake. He described people rushing around the city to check on their houses and pick up their children. One of his friends lost her house, he said.

One of the damaged buildings in Hualien, a 10-story structure called the Uranus Building that housed a mix of homes and shops, was tilted over and appeared to be on the verge of collapse. Many of its residents managed to flee, but some were missing, said Sunny Wang, a journalist based in the city. Rescuers were trying to reach the basement, concerned that people might be trapped there.

Photographs of the initial damage in Hualien showed another building, a five-story structure, leaning to one side, with crushed motorcycles visible at the ground-floor level. Bricks had fallen off another high-rise, leaving cracks and holes in the walls.

The quake also set off at least nine landslides on Suhua Highway in Hualien, according to Taiwan’s Central News Agency, which said part of the road had collapsed.

Taiwan’s fire department said four people had been killed in the earthquake.

John Yoon

Across Taiwan, 40 flights have been canceled or delayed because of the earthquake, according to Taiwan’s Central Emergency Operation Center.

President Tsai Ing-wen visited Taiwan’s national emergency response center this morning, where she was briefed about the response efforts underway by members of the ministries of defense, transportation, economic affairs and agriculture, as well as the fire department.

A look at Taiwan’s strongest earthquakes.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake that hit Taiwan on Wednesday morning was the strongest in 25 years, the island’s Central Weather Administration said.

At least four people died after the quake struck off Taiwan’s east coast, officials said.

Here’s a look back at some of the major earthquakes in modern Taiwanese history:

Taichung, 1935

Taiwan’s deadliest quake registered a magnitude of 7.1 and struck near the island’s west coast in April 1935, killing more than 3,200 people, according to the Central Weather Administration. More than 12,000 others were injured and more than 50,000 homes were destroyed or damaged.

Tainan, 1941

A magnitude 7.3 earthquake in December 1941, which struck southwestern Taiwan, caused several hundred deaths, the United States Geological Survey said.

Chi-Chi, 1999

A 7.6 magnitude earthquake in central Taiwan killed nearly 2,500 people in September 1999. The quake, which struck about 90 miles south-southwest of Taipei, was the second-deadliest in the island’s history, according to the U.S.G.S. and the Central Weather Administration. More than 10,000 people were injured and more than 100,000 homes were destroyed or damaged.

Yujing, 2016

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake in February 2016 caused a 17-story apartment complex in southwestern Taiwan to collapse, killing at least 114 people . The U.S.G.S. later said that 90 earthquakes of that scale or greater had occurred within 250 kilometers, or 155 miles, of that quake’s location over the previous 100 years.
