Photos show train cars piled up along riverbank after Norfolk Southern train derails

rail travel news south east

A Norfolk Southern freight train derailment in eastern Pennsylvania Saturday morning left locomotives and cars piled up along a river bank but resulted in no injuries or danger to the public, officials said.

The Nancy Run Fire Company wrote on Facebook Saturday the train derailed near the Lehigh River in Lower Saucon near the Pennsylvania-New Jersey state border. Lower Saucon is about 45 miles north of downtown Philadelphia.

No injuries have been reported in the derailment, the fire company wrote. No information was shared on the cause.

The fire company posted photos of train cars and locomotives piled up, some spilling over the river banks.

The Lower Saucon Township Police Department said in a Saturday release that diesel fuel spilled into the Lehigh River and containment booms were deployed. Lower Saucon Fire Rescue said on Facebook that there were no hazardous material risks to the community and no evacuations.

The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed on X, formerly Twitter, that it's investigating the derailment.

Gary Weiland, who lives across the river in Bethlehem Township, told The (Allentown) Morning Call he initially heard what sounded like a crash, then a period of quiet followed by the sound of another crash.

"As the second one was happening, I went upstairs and looked out the window and saw a splash. I said to my wife, 'I think a train derailed.'" he said.

Connor Spielmaker, senior communications manager for Norfolk Southern, said in an email that first responders are expected to update the public Saturday and doesn't believe there's a concern for residents in the area.

A train derailed along a riverbank in Saucon Township, Pa., on March 2.

"Norfolk Southern has responded to an incident near Bethlehem, PA," Spielmaker wrote. "At this time, there are no reports of injuries. We appreciate the quick, professional response by local emergency agencies. Our crews and contractors are on-scene and assessing with first responders."

The transportation company came under fire last year when a train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio , and black smoke plumed into the surrounding cities and some states.

Federal data from 2021 and 2022 says an average of about three trains derail in the U.S. a day. While not all derailments are equally as dramatic or dangerous, railroads are required to report any derailment that causes more than $10,700 in damage.

Most derailments happen in freight yards because cars are often switched between tracks, experts previously told USA TODAY.

"About 60% of all rail accidents occur in yards where there are more complex operations and lower speeds that tend to cause minimal damage," said Jessica Kahanek last year, a spokesperson for the Association of American Railroads, a trade group. "More than half of those are caused by human factors or human error."

As Biden Pushes Major Rail Investments, Amtrak's 2035 Map Has People Talking

Amtrak has proposed a plan for new and enhanced rail connections across the United States. Amtrak hide caption

Amtrak has proposed a plan for new and enhanced rail connections across the United States.

When President Biden unveiled his major new infrastructure plan last week, the proposal included much more than fixing crumbling bridges. And for those who wish America had a more robust passenger train network, it gave them something new: hope.

Biden's $2 trillion infrastructure package has two provisions involving passenger rail: $85 billion to modernize public transit (commuter rail, buses, stations, etc.) and $80 billion to improve and expand the nation's passenger and freight rail network.

"You and your family could travel coast to coast without a single tank of gas onboard a high-speed train," Biden said at the plan's unveiling.

But the idea isn't just nice family trips — it's to use improved rail infrastructure and service to alleviate problems such as traffic and air pollution as well as improve access to jobs. Transportation is the largest source of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions.

"The American Jobs Plan will build new rail corridors and transit lines, easing congestion, cutting pollution, slashing commute times, and opening up investment in communities that can be connected to the cities, and cities to the outskirts, where a lot of jobs are these days. It'll reduce the bottlenecks of commerce at our ports and our airports," Biden said.

The White House said the rail investment would "address Amtrak's repair backlog; modernize the high traffic Northeast Corridor; improve existing corridors and connect new city pairs; and enhance grant and loan programs that support passenger and freight rail safety, efficiency, and electrification."

Amtrak quickly responded with enthusiasm to Biden's plan, with a map and a vision for what an expanded U.S. rail network would look like by 2035.

The proposed transformation would mean some 30 new routes, and more trips on 20 existing ones. It projects 20 million more people served than the 32 million that rode Amtrak in the 2019 fiscal year.

It shows an array of potential new service lines: new rail connecting all of Texas' biggest cities and new connections across the Midwest, including between Cincinnati, Columbus, Ohio, and Cleveland. In the Southeast, new routes would stretch from Atlanta to Chattanooga and Nashville, Tenn., Savannah, Ga., and Montgomery, Ala.

There would be service to every state in the contiguous U.S. but South Dakota — a fact that drew the ire of Gov. Kristi Noem, who criticized the infrastructure package.

Amtrak says better rail service means "cleaner air, less traffic, and happier people," and it points to inequality that has resulted from the country's current patchy train service: "Many of the country's biggest and fastest growing metropolitan areas, with diverse populations, don't have the rail service they deserve."

Cities such as Houston, Atlanta and Cincinnati currently have bare-bones Amtrak service, with trains that only stop once a day and often in the middle of the night. Major cities including Las Vegas, Nashville, Columbus and Phoenix don't have any Amtrak service at all.

And that happiness bit? Amtrak notes that in some cities, people spend more than 80 hours a year in traffic. "Population growth will make this much worse without better alternatives like rail," it warns.

Around the country, local news dug into what expanded rail could mean for their communities.

"More direct train service between Raleigh and Richmond — and cities beyond. New passenger lines running to the North Carolina coast and to the state's mountains," Raleigh, N.C.'s The News & Observer wrote .

"Prospects for a passenger rail line connecting Baton Rouge and New Orleans got a boost this week," wrote the New Orleans Advocate , noting that the last passenger train to serve Baton Rouge, La., ended service in 1969.

"Amtrak may soon have the cash to install a new rail line between Las Vegas and Los Angeles," the Reno Gazette-Journal said .

"President Joe Biden's infrastructure improvement plan would bring Amtrak passenger service back to Phoenix for the first time in decades," NPR member station KJZZ noted .

And on Twitter, people started posting the rail lines they'd like to see. Like a direct route from Ohio to Florida.

Before all that can happen, an infrastructure bill will need to get through Congress. The House and Senate are both working on infrastructure bills, which are expected to include what the administration has proposed, but the process is still unclear.

For those eager for alternatives to the car, the historic proposal by a president known for his former daily commute by Amtrak from home in Wilmington, Del., to D.C. is what they've been waiting for.

"President Biden's plan would revolutionize the way Americans travel, finally launching U.S. passengers into the 21st century," said Jim Mathews, president and CEO of the Rail Passengers Association.

Rail strikes disrupt travel in south-east England

Strikes by rail workers have hit train services across south-east England.

Workers at Southeastern, Southern, Gatwick Express and SWR have staged a 24-hour walk-out over pay.

Across Kent, Sussex and Surrey, passengers were urged to seek alternative methods of transport due to the walk-outs.

The industrial action was being carried out by members of the train drivers' union, Aslef, affecting different train companies on different days.

Disruption is expected until 8 December, as well as an overtime ban lasting until 9 December.

Across Kent, Sussex and Surrey, passengers have been urged not to travel and to seek alternative methods of transport due to the walkouts.

https://twitter.com/Se_Railway/status/1732271409613693160

Train companies in other parts of the country are also affected by the walkouts. These include:

  • Tuesday 5 December: C2C and Greater Anglia
  • Wednesday 6 December: Southeastern, Southern, Gatwick Express, SWR and Island Line
  • Thursday 7 December: CrossCountry and GWR
  • Friday 8 December: Northern and Transpennine Express

Many of the affected operators are expected to run no services at all on strike days and travelling on the day before or after strike days might also be affected.

For the latest information, passengers should check National Rail or individual operators' websites.

  • Train driver strikes hit southern England
  • RMT votes to end rail strikes until at least spring

Mick Whelan, Aslef's general secretary, said on Friday he would resolve the dispute over pay and conditions "tomorrow given the opportunity", but told the BBC the union had only been presented with "a bad faith deal" from operators and had not been in contact since.

The Rail Delivery Group has called the latest action by Aslef "unnecessary and avoidable" and said the union's leadership was "blocking a fair and affordable offer".

Rail Minister Huw Merriman has said the strikes will cause "more misery for passengers and the hospitality sector this festive period".

Both Aslef and the RMT union, which represents other rail workers, have taken repeated industrial action over the past 18 months, but the RMT is not currently staging strikes after its members voted to accept a pay offer.

  • New trains for Southeastern passengers returning to rail in south east London and north Kent

New trains for Southeastern passengers returning to rail in south east London and north Kent: Class 707 infographic revised

  • Class 707 service set for autumn start
  • Air-conditioned, spacious and modern trains will run on Hayes line and routes to Sevenoaks and Dartford
  • New trains will provide more space and replace some older ‘Networker’ trains

As people return to rail in the coming months, Southeastern is preparing to introduce a new fleet of Class 707 trains beginning in the autumn of this year.

The new additions to the fleet will increase the amount of space available to passengers on the routes from Dartford, Sevenoaks and Hayes, and into London terminals.     These modern, spacious, and air-conditioned trains will deliver a significant improvement in the passenger experience on the busier London routes, replacing some of Southeastern’s older ‘Networker’ trains.

The start of the preview service in the autumn will be followed by the full service in 2022 - when a sufficient number of trains have transferred from South Western Railway (SWR), refreshed, deep-cleaned and updated, ready for use on the Southeastern network.

David Statham, Managing Director at Southeastern said:

“Bringing in modern, reliable trains with more space is an important part of the work we are doing to encourage people back to rail travel.

“Following a great effort by everyone across the railway, I’m very pleased to confirm that our new trains are getting set to carry passengers later this year.

“The Class 707 represents a big investment in our train fleet and I’m really looking forward to welcoming our customers aboard.”

Rail Minister Chris Heaton Harris said:

“This is a welcome upgrade for passengers on Southeastern’s network.

“As the nation starts moving again following the pandemic, passengers will benefit from modern, clean, reliable trains that will make it even better to travel by rail”.

Sambit Banerjee, Managing Director Rolling Stock and Customer Services for Siemens Mobility Limited said:

“We were delighted to see the Siemens Mobility Class 707s moving over to their new home at Southeastern. It has been a great collaborative effort since then between Siemens Mobility and Southeastern operational teams to get the trains ready for service, which has continued throughout the Covid 19 lockdown.

“We look forward to supporting passengers travelling into London from the South East on comfortable, air conditioned trains and continuing our great partnership with Southeastern.”

Notes to editors

  • Southeastern has already received six Class 707 trains since January, which are currently being housed at Ashford, Grove Park and Slade Green depots. These units are being used for maintenance and driver training, as well as station compatibility tests. The next two 5-car trains are expected to be delivered in July 2021.
  • The Class 707 fleet is owned by Angel Trains and was originally procured for South West Trains (SWT), with the first entering service on routes in south west London in 2017.
  • With SWT’s successor, South Western Railway, in the process of receiving a brand-new train fleet for its London area routes, the Class 701, Southeastern has taken on the nearly new Class 707 fleet for its Metro routes.
  • Features of the each of the 30 trains, which will operate on Metro services to London from Dartford, Hayes and Sevenoaks include an open, bright and spacious interior, 271 seats per unit, plug sockets, Wi-Fi, modern air conditioning, ventilation and heating and passenger information screens including a loading display for every carriage.

East Palestine toxic train derailment shows urgency of passing new safety law, Sen. Brown says

"It shouldn't take a rail disaster to get us working together," he said.

Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown on Sunday touted the need for new bipartisan rail safety legislation weeks after the toxic train derailment in East Palestine sparked an uproar over existing regulations and precautions for rail companies.

"It shouldn't take a rail disaster to get us working together like that. And that's what we're going to be doing," Brown told ABC "This Week" anchor George Stephanopoulos.

The Democratic lawmaker said he believed his proposal, backed by him and Ohio's Republican senator, J.D. Vance, among others, could pass their chamber even if its prospects in the House were less clear. President Joe Biden endorsed the legislation Thursday and encouraged Congress to act quickly on it.

The fallout from the train derailment has become a political debate, with Republicans like former President Donald Trump accusing the Biden administration of ignoring East Palestine while the White House has pushed back.

"They want this fixed. They don't care about partisan politics there," Brown said on "This Week," referencing the residents of East Palestine. "They care that this corporation continues to weaken safety rules and continues to be immensely profitable while undermining public health, public safety for their workers and for the communities that they that they drive through."

MORE: 20 cars of Norfolk Southern cargo train derail in Ohio

Last month's derailment, which saw noxious chemicals spilling into the waterways and soil in East Palestine , a small Ohio village near the Pennsylvania border, led to bipartisan calls in Congress for a legislative solution.

Norfolk Southern, which operated the train, said Wednesday that the company is "committed" to working on ways to prevent another incident like what took place in East Palestine. But on Saturday, another Norfolk Southern train derailed in Ohio, this time in Springfield. The company said that unlike in East Palestine, this train was not carrying hazardous materials.

Brown told Stephanopoulos that while other officials he has spoken to were "pretty satisfied with Norfolk Southern's response" to the latest derailment, he wants to know more, like if there any "contaminants" leftover in that train's cars that could impact the surrounding area.

"The railroad’s got a lot of questions they've got to answer and they really haven't done it very well yet," Brown said.

Norfolk Southern's CEO, Alan Shaw, will appear Thursday before the Senate's Environment and Public Works Committee. On "This Week," Brown blamed the self-interest of the company's executives for recent incidents.

"Ohio's now had four derailments. As of yesterday, four derailments in the last five months. East Palestine was the most serious, but we still have questions ... about these other derailments too," Brown said.

He and Vance teamed up with four other senators of both parties to introduce the Railway Safety Act of 2023, which seeks to address the causes and fallout of the crash.

PHOTO: In this Dec. 1, 2022, file photo, Senator Sherrod Brown speaks during a Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee hearing in Washington, D.C.

Among other things, their bill would mandate that rail companies inform emergency response commissions what hazardous materials are traveling through their states and when; require crews to consist of at least two people at a time when many companies are moving toward single-person crews; and increase fines and inspections.

"The fines for safety have averaged about $10,000 over the last few years to Norfolk Southern, on CSX, in the other big railroads. That's just pennies on the dollar, a cost of doing business, and it's no incentive to make it safer," Brown said.

The legislation would also institute new national requirements for monitoring wheel bearings, including to automatically detect any issues. An overheated wheel bearing, to which the crew was alerted too late, contributed to the crash in East Palestine, federal authorities have said.

However, Brown acknowledged uncertainty about whether his bill could pass the Republican-controlled House after some conservatives in the chamber cast the legislation as overly restrictive.

"I think our chances in the Senate are good. I make no predictions in the House," Brown said, pointing to the influence of lobbyists.

"I am very concerned about the power of the railroads to beat back safety regulations. But you'd think a disaster that happened in East Palestine would have gotten their attention," he said.

Stephanopoulos separately pressed the senator on whether he is concerned about running for reelection in a red state next year, likely on the same ballot as President Joe Biden, who would face stiff headwinds winning the erstwhile swing state.

"I don't think a lot about that," Brown insisted, referencing his extensive travel across Ohio.

Throughout the interview, Brown sounded off the same populist notes that are likely to underscore his next campaign in a state dominated by the kinds of blue-collar voters who defected from Democrats to back former President Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020.

"People are still concerned, based on my last few trips there [to East Palestine]. This company has done huge stock buybacks and they were trying to do an even bigger one this year; they've laid off a third of their workforce," Brown said of Norfolk Southern. "Their greed and incompetence always take precedent over their workers and safety."

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Ukrainian sea drones destroy Russian ship near Crimea'; caller on leaked German audio 'used non-secure line'

Ukrainian sea drones have damaged a Russian Black Sea Fleet patrol ship off Crimea, according to Ukrainian intelligence. Meanwhile, Germany's defence minister has said Russia likely intercepted a military call by chance via widespread surveillance.

The Kremlin is continuing efforts to ensure high voter turnout in the upcoming presidential election", the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has said.

The US-based thinktank said the Kremlin was doing this to "present the guise of legitimacy and widespread popular support among Vladimir Putin's domestic electorate".

It notes the Russian opposition outlet Meduza reported on 4 March that the Russian presidential administration is "concerned about meeting its intended 70-80% voter turnout mark this month".

This is because there is "a widespread sentiment in Russia that the election has already been decided".

To bring up the figures, Menduza reports the Kremlin is telling  employees of the public sector to bring their family members, friends, and acquaintances to polling stations.

"ISW has long assessed that the Kremlin's election preparations are intended to cast the election as completely legitimate and widely popular with strong voter turnout," the ISW said.

Ukrainian troops have been preparing artillery along the frontline near the town of Kreminna, in the eastern Luhansk region.

There is fierce fighting in the region as both sides try to make a breakthrough.

By Adam Parsons , Europe correspondent

Boris Pistorius, the German defence minister, has been putting in a determined effort to limit the damage and restore confidence in his country.

Germany is Europe's richest country, after all - a bulwark of the European Union and NATO. And yet, he knows that, right now, allies worry that it's not a reliable partner.

Despite spending a huge amount of money on supporting Ukraine, Germany has somehow ended up with a reputation for being cautious and unsure.

If anything, that's probably down to the character of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who is still dithering over his decision about whether to supply Taurus missiles to Ukraine.

That's the background.

Then came this leak of information, which Mr Pistorius blames on an "information war" being waged by Russia.

But, in fact, it turns out that a very senior German air force leader, while visiting an air show in Singapore, dialled into a secure channel using insecure means, and because of that the call got recorded. It's not exactly James Bond stuff.

Mr Pistorius says the communications system "is not compromised" and that the leak was instead down to "an individual error" but that he won't be pushed into firing anyone "by Putin's games". But that's not really the problem.

Instead, this leak has emboldened Russia to spread division among allies and, perhaps, to muddle Mr Scholz's thinking even more. It's worried allies, who were already quietly worried about leaks within German intelligence.

And it's damaged political relationships within and without his country. Mr Scholz's popularity has plummeted in recent months, and his ruling coalition is under strain. What he needed was a period of calm, focused leadership. Instead, he's in another storm.

One of the participants on Germany's leaked military call dialled via a non-secure line and disciplinary measures are being looked into, Germany's defence minister has said.

Presenting the first results of the investigation, Boris Pistorius said Russia had likely intercepted the military call by chance via widespread surveillance, and not through a spy or any compromised German systems.

"Our communication systems have not been compromised," Mr Pistorius said.

"The reason the air force call could nonetheless be recorded was because of an individual's operational mistake."

Mr Pistorius said the specific participant had dialled in from Singapore where an air show was taking place.

"So we must assume that the access to this Webex conference was a chance hit in the framework of a broad, scattered approach," the minister added.

He also said use of Webex for the call was authorised.

For context : Over the weekend, a recording was leaked of a conversation between high-ranking German officers where they discussed the country's Ukraine war strategy.

The top officers also discussed how the air force could provide technical support for the delivery of Taurus missiles in a hypothetical situation.

The conversation also referenced British soldiers on the ground in Ukraine.

German authorities confirmed the authenticity of the recording, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz calling the leak a "very serious matter".

A Russian advance outside the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka has been contained but Moscow's troops are regrouping in an area further south, Ukraine's military has said.

The capture of Avdiivka last month prompted Vladimir Putin to pledge that Moscow's forces would make further advances.

Russia's defence ministry later said its forces had captured new villages outside Avdiivka.

Now, Ukrainian military spokesperson Dmytro Lykhoviy has acknowledged that Russian forces are in partial control of two more villages but says their advances have been halted.

"At the same time, we are saying that in this hottest sector of the direct Russian assault, we are managing to stabilise the situation and the enemy's advance has been halted," he said.

The capture of Avdiivka after months of fighting was Russia's biggest gain in nine months, though the frontlines have undergone only limited movement in that time.

Russia's foreign ministry spokeswoman has said German journalists will have to leave Russia if Berlin takes measures against Russian journalists there, RIA news agency reports.

Maria Zakharova made the comments after Germany's ambassador in Russia was reportedly summoned yesterday over a leaked recording of a conversation between high-ranking German officers. In the recording, they discussed the country's Ukraine war strategy and the potential to supply new missiles.

Upon being summoned, Russia says Alexander Graf Lambsdorff was given stern words over alleged attempts by Berlin to restrict the activities of Russian journalists in Germany.

"If they touch Russian correspondents and bring their plans to conclusion, German journalists will leave Russia," Ms Zakharova said.

Germany later said Mr Lambsdorff was not summoned and the meeting was pre-planned.

Yesterday, German authorities confirmed the authenticity of the leaked recording, with Chancellor Olaf Scholz calling the leak a "very serious matter".

However, defence minister Boris Pistorius suggested Russia had used a level of "choreography".

He claimed the leak was timed to deflect attention away from Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny's funeral.

Ukrainian sea drones have damaged a Russian Black Sea Fleet patrol ship off occupied Crimea, Ukraine's military intelligence has reported this morning.

The intelligence agency said on Telegram  that its special unit attacked the Sergey Kotov ship near the Kerch Strait.

"As a result of a strike by Magura V5 maritime drones, the Russian ship Project 22160 Sergey Kotov sustained damage to the stern, starboard and port sides," it said.

The message added that the ship was worth about $65m.

Andriy Yermak, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's chief of staff, has said on Telegram that "the Russian Black Sea Fleet is a symbol of occupation" and that "it cannot be in the Ukrainian Crimea", in an apparent reference to the strike.

Train traffic was temporarily stopped on the bridge linking the Crimean peninsula to the Russian mainland, according to reports.

We'll be bringing you live updates throughout the day as the fallout continues over a leaked discussion between high ranking German military officers.

A prominent Russian journalist released audio of the German officers discussing the country's war strategy - something that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz described as a "very serious matter".

Meanwhile, our military analyst Sean Bell said Russia had likely released details of its interception in a bid to prevent Germany from sending its Taurus missiles to Ukraine (these were discussed in the recording).

Elsewhere, UN nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi is set to visit Russia - and may hold talks with Vladimir Putin.

Before we bring you the latest updates, here's more news from the last 24 hours...

  • Germany rejected reports Russia had summoned its ambassador over the leak incident;
  • Albania reopened a Soviet-era air base in a boost to NATO's presence in the region;
  • Ukraine claimed a civilian was killed by cluster munitions in the Zaporizhzhia region;
  • US airman Jake Teixeira plead guilty to leaking Pentagon documents containing sensitive information on Ukraine;
  • Two first responders were killed in a secondary Russian strike as they worked to put out a fire, Ukraine's interior minister said.

The map below shows the territorial picture in Ukraine...

We'll be back soon to bring you the latest updates on the war in Ukraine.

You can scroll back through the blog to read what happened today.

Ukraine and Spain have begun discussions on a bilateral agreement on security guarantees, according to Volodymyr Zelenskyy's office.

Officials discussed the structure of the future deal and agreed a schedule for further negotiations.

More than 30 countries have already joined the G7 Joint Declaration of Support for Ukraine, including the UK, Germany, France, Denmark and the Netherlands.

Members of the G7 presented a plan for long-term security commitments for Ukraine at the NATO summit in July last year.

The plan agrees individual countries will provide bilateral support to help Ukraine push back against the Russian invasion and deter future aggression.

They also cover areas such as sanctions, financial aid and post-war reconstruction.
