excellent flight to India - KLM Royal Dutch Airlines

“excellent flight to India” Review of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines

Our flight from Dublin via Amsterdam to Delhi return was excellent. All flights left on time, service on board was really good. I personally did not use the in flight entertainment screen so I cannot comment on that. One point on the return flight that leaves at 0345 am, is that I found the cabin to be cold and was not comfortable. However as I did not complain, its probably my fault ! One extra bonus was the opportunity to spend 3 days in Amsterdam on the way back, which we really enjoyed.

Excellent service and food on this long flight from SFO to Amsterdam (11hours). Flight attendants were very helpful, courteous and offered extra goodies during the flight. We continued on to Johannesburg after only 3 hours layover in Amsterdam. Next time, we will take an extra day layover before flying on.

  • In-flight Entertainment

I only gave KLM a 4 star rating because of the food. The service is very good and friendly, but the food has gone down over the years. I actually got sick from the cucumber salad, and had to use the paper bag. On the way back I ordered special meals. One Indonesian, and an Italian meal. $12 extra. But only the tiramisu was good. More money was spend on the fancy packaging than on the food. It was better than the regular meal. If I could just buy a small bottle of champagne on the flight, I would give it a 5 Star rating! It still is the only airline I fly with!

Everything ok. It is nice to travel with this company. Its not luxury, but very good passenger attention and the crew is very kind. Good aircraft

City hopper service by KLM Glasgow to Nuremberg, via Amsterdam. Flights on time, comfortable. The five hour stopover at Amsterdam was a bit long but there is always plenty to do and see at schizophrenia airport.

KLM expands across India

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will be expanding its Indian network to include Bangalore. At the end of October 2019, KLM will launch a thrice-weekly direct service from Amsterdam to this Indian megacity. These flights will be operated using Boeing 787-9 (Dreamliner) equipment, seating 294 passengers.

The new KLM flights will expand KLM’s network in India, where the cities of Delhi and Mumbai are already served. The thrice-weekly connection with Bangalore will open up even more opportunities for travel between Amsterdam and India. In so doing, KLM will be offering additional connections between the United States and India via its Amsterdam hub.

Until recently, KLM cooperated intensively with its partner Jet Airways on routes to and from India. Unfortunately, Jet Airways had to suspend all its flights for an indefinite period with effect from April 2019. Consequently, KLM decided to raise capacity to India in order to offer our customers alternatives, while continuing to cater to market demand.

Effective 28 October 2019, KLM will offer flights between Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Bangalore on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The flights will be operated using Boeing 787-9 equipment, offering 30 seats in World Business Class, 45 in Economy Comfort Class and 219 in Class. The flight schedule will be as follows:

  • Flight KL0879 departs from Schiphol at 11:05 hours and arrives at 00:50+1 hours local time in Bangalore at Kempegowda International Airport.
  • Flight KL0880 departs from Bangalore at 02:45 hours local time and arrives the following day at 08:25 hours at Schiphol.

Destination Bangalore

Bangalore (officially known as Bengaluru) is home to over 10 million inhabitants, making it the third largest city in India after Delhi and Mumbai. The city lies in the south of India and is the capital of the state of Karnataka. Bangalore is the fourth largest technology cluster in the world and is widely known as the “Silicon Valley” of India. Apart from being an attractive business destination because of this, Bangalore also serves as a perfect gateway for travelling through the south of India. Numerous tourist destinations – including well-known nature reserves, the beaches of Goa and the backwaters of Kerala – can be reached easily from Bangalore.

Provisional closure of Colombo, Sri Lanka

In order to open up Bangalore as a new destination, a number of changes must be made to the KLM network. Partly because of slot restrictions at Schiphol, KLM has no choice but to revise its portfolio of destinations sooner than usual.

For this reason, KLM will provisionally suspend its direct connection to Colombo, Sri Lanka with effect from the end of October. Recent developments and economic prospects on the island of Sri Lanka have brought commercial pressure to bear upon the flights to Colombo.

KLM has been flying to Colombo two to three times a week alternately during the winter season since October 2016. Passengers with tickets for flights from Amsterdam to Colombo and vice versa departing on or after 28 October 2019 will either be rebooked on the most suitable alternative flights or they will be compensated financially.

Economy 101: Should I fly KLM or Air France?

air-france-klm-plane

Often, a stopover is the perfect way to score a low-cost ticket in economy class. For example, flying to Asia directly from London will easily cost you £600 ($751) or more, but flying with a stopover can bring the ticket price down to £300 ($376). Two of the U.K.'s favorite airlines to use for a stopover are KLM, with a stop at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS), and Air France, with a stopover at Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG). The airlines work together so closely that they will often share not just codeshares, but also fare bases. This means you can choose between KLM and Air France around the same price point. Which one is better, though? Let's take a look.

Earning miles

If you are a TPG reader, you will probably guess why this point is at the top of the list — you fly to earn miles! (Okay, maybe also to get to your destination. And a little bit of plane spotting, maybe?)

Conveniently, for Air France and KLM, the earning possibilities are very similar. Your best bet is to credit to the shared Flying Blue program , which often gives you the most miles. Keep in mind though, that mileage earning is based on revenue in this mileage program. If you are flying a long-distance itinerary that you got at an unbelievably low price, it might be more lucrative to credit to a partner, like Delta. Find out your optimal earnings using the WhereToCredit calculator .

Related reading: Dutch Treat: KLM (787-9) in Economy From New York to Amsterdam

There are some minor differences between KLM and Air France earning at partner airlines. For example, Air France flights can still be credited to China Southern (CZ), despite the fact that the airline recently left the SkyTeam alliance. KLM offers crediting to COPA. Check out the table below, comparing earning possibilities for the V fare bucket, the most-occurring type of discounted economy (courtesy of WhereToCredit).

klm travel to india

KLM has a considerably newer fleet than Air France. The KLM and KLM Cityhopper combination have an average fleet age of 10.2 years, while Air France's fleet is an average of 13.8 years old. In comparison, British Airways' fleet is also an average of 13.8 years old, according to Airfleets.net.

klm travel to india

The KLM fleet is loaded with Boeing and Embraer jets, while Air France mainly operates Airbus airplanes. Not surprising, since the most important Airbus facilities are located in France. On KLM, you can still fly the Queen of the Skies , whereas on Air France you might get an A380 .

KLM tends to have modern, slimline seating with up-to-date in flight entertainment, while Air France mostly has older seats offering a bit more padding and space, with outdated IFE systems. Here's a comparative list of KLM and Air France planes with their respective seat sizes in inches:

klm travel to india

That said, Air France is quickly updating its fleet with the addition of Airbus A350 aircraft — the first of which it took delivery of in September .

Stopover airport

Both stopover airports are among the five largest in Europe, so there is no shortage of entertainment or options in the food and beverage department. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is considered to be an easy transfer airport because of the single-terminal concept: no matter where you arrive, you can always simply walk to your next gate. For Paris Charles de Gaulle, this is a little bit more complicated. There are lots of terminals, linked by buses, meaning you need more transfer time — unless you leave from the same terminal you arrive at. With passport checks sometimes in between gates, that means unpredictable transfers. For that reason, travelers generally like transferring in Amsterdam better.

klm travel to india

If you hold status with Flying Blue, you might have complimentary access to the airline lounges. Amsterdam has a rather large single KLM lounge that offers great tarmac views and quality food options. Paris Charles de Gaulle has multiple terminals and therefore multiple Air France lounges, which are all quite comparable. The lounges at CDG tend to offer slightly larger buffets and more diverse food, while the KLM lounge has better views and a more modern feel.

Onboard service

klm travel to india

There is a noticeable difference between KLM and Air France in terms of onboard service. KLM service is clean and efficient, while Air France leans more toward traditional hospitality. Neither is good or bad. The KLM food service is fast and without bells and whistles, while Air France service will offer a menu, Champagne and more elaborate table setting. It's all minor differences, but based on what suits you best, you might like one more than the other.

Bottom line

Depending on your preferences, you'll find a flight with KLM or Air France in economy to be the more attractive option. Both carriers have upsides and downsides to their service, fleet, onboard offering and more. Be sure to do your research before booking, such as catching up on TPG reviews of both products.

Simple Flying

Air india introduces enhancements to flying returns program.

The Tata-owned airline is bringing changes to its frequent flyer program.

  • Tata's Air India revamp includes new Airbus and Boeing orders.
  • Enhanced Flying Returns program to be rolled out & system upgrade on April 3.
  • Air India focusing on frequent flyers' perks to ensure loyal customer base.

Under Tata's reinstated ownership of Air India , the group began drastically revamping the airline. Notably, it now operates the Airbus A350 and has made a large-scale order for the widebody. The airline also ordered six Boeing 777Xs. However, it will be long before passengers can experience the full extent of the renewed Air India experience. The carrier will be, however, able to enjoy some of the enhancements coming to the Indian flag carrier's frequent flyer program, Flying Returns.

More A350-900s And A321s: Air India Makes Changes To Its Massive Airbus Order

According to airline loyalty specialist Loyalty Lobby , the airline reportedly sent an email stating that it is rolling out an “enhancement” to its Flying Returns program on April 3 that will apply to flights taken the day before (April 2).

The email also suggested the airline will perform a system upgrade on the night of April 2.

If you are an Air India Flying Returns account holder, please note that if your account was inaccessible between April at 21:00 Hrs to 23:59 Hrs IST, it is expected as the airline was reprogramming the interface ahead of the relaunch.

Along with this email, the loyalty specialist website also reported that the airline sent the following two images :

While not much is known about the perks, earning miles through daily purchases is increasingly common. Through partnerships with credit card companies like Amex, other airlines like British Airways, Delta, or even Air France-KLM allow their frequent flyers to generate miles without flying. The most intriguing poster is the one that mentions being treated like a star. Would it mean getting access to private shows such as concerts? Does it mean a revamp of their priority boarding protocol? There are only four days left until the entire world finds out.

Frequent Flyers: the most valuable passengers.

Seeing that Air India is revamping its Flying Returns program is great news for the full-service carrier. This is because frequent flyers play an essential role in its business. Those customers have chosen to favor an airline over its competitors and, on average, would fly at least once a month. They are considered loyal returning customers. By ensuring they get the best possible treatment, airlines ensure they keep returning.

Most airlines give select status holders perks such as priority boarding, lounge access, or complimentary upgrades. Others occasionally get more creative by generating a sensation of exclusivity, as SAS did with its destination unknown campaign, offering a free flight to a handful of lucky customers to a destination they will only discover on the day.

Bottom line

Air India is making a strategic move by upgrading the perks of its frequent flyer program. From a communications perspective, the announcement is brilliant. The airline generates anticipation by not leaking any perks until the announcement date but instead posting teaser images. More people will talk about Flying Rewards, potentially generating new accounts and paving the way for a renewed loyal customer base, which is ideal for an airline in the process of a bottom-up revamp.

Intrepid Travel Highlights Importance of India For 2030 Strategy— India Report

Bulbul Dhawan , Skift

March 27th, 2024 at 11:00 PM EDT

India is a land of numerous local cultures and experiences, which can substantially enhance Intrepid's offerings for tourists in the country.

Bulbul Dhawan

The Skift India Newsletter is your go-to platform for all news related to travel, tourism, airlines, and hospitality in India.

Intrepid Travel talked about the importance of India as a destination to the group’s 2030 strategy. The tour operator currently operates 800 trips in the country as part of its offerings that allow travelers to experience the local culture of the destination.

Having operated in India for almost two decades, Intrepid aims to bring in 30,000 travelers to India by 2030, a bold ambition: It represents almost 300% growth. In 2023, Intrepid welcomed 7,500 travelers in India.

Last year, Intrepid CEO James Thornton had said the company was looking to bring more than 12,000 travelers to India in 2024. This would mark the company’s return to pre-pandemic numbers in the country.

Speaking at the Skift India Summit earlier, Intrepid Travel founder and chairman Darrell Wade had said that Intrepid could see themselves playing a part in India’s domestic travel at some point in the future. “While we may not be looking at it for the next two or three years but by 2030, we would,” he said.

India’s domestic air passenger traffic had been 152 million in 2023.

Talking about India, Wade said that while people may tend to gravitate to certain circuits, like the Golden Triangle, wherever possible, Intrepid looks to break that model and get people into a more diversified range of product. “Very often we find people enjoy it more when they’re doing something that they don’t expect to do and didn’t really even know they were signing up for,” he said.

Intrepid also plans to expand into areas, including accommodation and grow its presence in countries, like India.

Intrepid Travel currently operates around 800 trips across the country.

2030 Strategy: The company’s 2030 strategy is aimed at doubling the number of its global customers to 600,000 from 320,000 last year. Additionally, it is seeking to more than double its revenue to $1.3 billion by 2030.

Over 24,000 Weekly Domestic Flights to Take Off in India This Summer

The summer schedule for Indian airlines has been released and it will come into effect from March 31. According to the schedule, 24,275 domestic flights will be operated every week. This marks a 6% increase as compared to the previous year. In the ongoing winter schedule, carriers are operating 23,732 weekly flights.

Budget carriers IndiGo and Akasa Air and full-service sister airlines Air India and Vistara are set to increase the number of flights, while troubled low-cost carrier SpiceJet will be cutting down its weekly departures by over 22%.

The summer schedule includes 125 airports. These also include seven new airports that have been proposed by scheduled carriers, said Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) .

Internationally, Indian carriers will be flying to 37 countries from 27 domestic airports. Scheduled Indian carriers will operate nearly 2,000 weekly international flights.

Singapore Easing Visa Norms for Indians, Expects 1.5 Million Tourists

Singapore is working on seamless and easy visas for Indian travelers, Indian news agency PTI cited a senior Singapore tourism official as saying. The country is also focusing on increasing its hospitality infrastructure including hotel rooms to support an anticipated influx of visitors. It has 72,000 hotel rooms at present, and is working on adding 9,000 more.

The Singapore Tourism Board has not set any target for travelers from India due to the tourism market potential. It has acknowledged that the number in 2024 could reach 1.5 million. This would be higher than the pre-pandemic figure of 1.4 million tourists, and would be a growth of 36% over the 2023 arrival figures.

SpiceJet Settles Liabilities Worth $91 Million

Low cost airline SpiceJet has entered into a settlement agreement with Export Development Canada (EDC) to clear liabilities worth $91 million. This is the carrier’s biggest breakthrough in its financial restructuring so far. With this agreement, the airline is set to take full ownership of 13 EDC-financed Q400 aircraft.

The debt-ridden airline has reached several settlement agreements with its leasing companies, including AerCap, Echelon Ireland Madison One Ltd, and Cross Ocean Partners. As part of its settlements, it recently received three airframes and an engine . SpiceJet is looking to return to full capacity by restoring its grounded fleet.

IndiGo to Fly More International Routes

India’s largest airline IndiGo is planning to double in size by 2030. For this, it is looking to add more international routes and destinations to its network, said CEO Pieter Elbers . The company’s overseas presence is expected to be boosted by A321 XLR aircraft that can join its fleet next year.

In an interview with Indian news agency PTI, Elbers said that the 2030 ambition is to create an airline that would be double of its current size, global reach and footprint. For this, it is looking at more codeshare partnerships. Currently, IndiGo has partnered with British Airways, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airways, Qantas, KLM-AirFrance, American Airline, Virgin Atlantic, and Jetstar.

Hyatt’s India Pipeline 2024: Six Hotels to Open

Hyatt Hotels has announced its pipeline in India for 2024 . The brand will open six hotels across three brands in the country this year. Two Hyatt Regency hotels are slated to open in Kasauli and Ghaziabad, while the company will open Hyatt Place hotels in Aurangabad and Haridwar. Hyatt Centric Ballygunge Kolkata and Hyatt Centric Hebbal Bengaluru are also in the pipeline.

The company recently marked the launch of its ninth brand in India with the opening of Ronil Goa under the JdV by Hyatt brand. The hotel company also has a new Hyatt Place hotel coming up in Bangladesh this year, marking its entry into the Southwest Asian nation.
