Detailed Hundred Islands travel guide blog with sample Hundred Islands itinerary and trip budget. Also includes places to stay in Hundred Islands and things to do.

Hundred Islands epitomizes the best of Pangasinan , riddled by 123 islets spearing out of the cerulean sea.  Home to a staggering variety of wildlife and fishes, these coral islands make up the Hundred Islands National Park.  Most of them are desolate, save for the 7 major islands that are usually included in the island hopping tour: Governors Island, Virgin Island, Quezon Island, Marcos Island, Scout Island, Children’s Island, and Pilgrimage Island/Ramos Island (island with large Jesus statue).  These islands have exploded in popularity and booming like nowhere else in Pangasinan. It’s an ideal weekend getaway for families and friends because the park is packed with water activities. Here’s a Hundred Islands travel guide with itinerary and budget  to help you plan your trip.

WHERE TO STAY IN HUNDRED ISLANDS

If you ask me where to stay in Hundred Islands, I’d tell you right away to stay in Lucap, Alaminos. Last time, we stayed at a hotel near Lucap Park since it’s walking distance to the Tourism Office and Lucap Wharf, the main jumping off point for island hopping in Hundred Islands.

So, if you have limited time and you want to save on boat rental since the overnight boat rental is quite expensive, you can opt to do a day tour of Hundred Islands and just stay at resorts at the mainland overnight.

Also, eateries are concentrated at Lucap Park, a good place to dine at night. There’s also a souvenir shop for OTOP (One Town One Prouct) where you can buy souvenir food made in Pangasinan.  Souvenir shirts and other products are also sold by souvenir stores/shops nearby.

  HUNDRED ISLANDS BUDGET BREAKDOWN

HUNDRED ISLANDS SUNSET

Here’s a sample Hundred Islands budget, good for 2 days 1 night stay. Take note that the sample budget is per person and this is good if you are a party of 2. Hotel, drinks, souvenirs, and airfare are not included in the budget breakdown.

If you are only doing a Hundred Islands day tour , estimated total expenses is roughly ₱2,086 – $43 (€36,SGD 57, MYR 176, KRW 47,897) per person, if you are a party of 2. If you are more than 2, sample budget can be lowered as you will be sharing on the tricycle fare and boat rental.

Hotel rooms in Lucap usually costs ₱1,200 ($25) to ₱2,000 ($41), good for 2 persons. So, if you’re able to book at this rate, just divide the cost and add it to the sample budget above, so you can have an idea how much it’ll cost for an overnight stay in Hundred Islands.

HUNDRED ISLANDS TRAVEL TIPS AND REMINDERS

hundred islands travel guide

  • Always wear life jacket when riding the boat and when swimming, snorkeling, and doing other water sports activities.
  • Stack up cash as everything is on cash basis.
  • Include the boatman in your lunch budget.
  • If you want to save, buy food and drinks at the market or grocery in Alaminos.
  • Wear reef-friendly sunblock.
  • Bring power banks. Although charging station is available, there is a fee.
  • Bring water-proof bag and case for your gadgets.
  • Bring drinking bottle and metal straw.
  • Do not collect sand as souvenirs.
  • Take your trash with you and dispose them properly. Leave nothing but footprints.
  • Always bring vinegar when visiting a beach, just in case you get stung by a jelly fish. Better be safe than sorry. Although I never heard of any jelly fish incidents there.
  • Bring food and drinks. There are stores in some islands where you can buy drinks and snacks, but they are quite expensive. You can buy basic commodities in the supermarket before riding the tricycle to Lucap Wharf.
  • There are budget-friendly eateries at Lucap Park.
  • There’s a comfort room at some developed islands like Governor’s Island.

City tours

  • Hundred Islands Tour Package

The Hundred Islands national park is slowly recovering from the disastrous typhoon which hit the Pangasinan province in 2003. Tourism to the area took a major hit, even though the beautiful islands remained relatively unscathed. Luckily, this beautiful place is blooming again – hotels are springing up and tours become more frequent.

Only 5 hours away from Manila, the 100 islands tour is one of the nicer getaways from the city. Day tours are not ideal, and it’s better to book an overnight package. All of our hundred islands tour packages include transfers, hotels and resorts, as well as personally designed tours and attractions . The hundred island is an amazing attraction, perfect for couples, families and small groups. The area offer a mix of attractions and your whole tour package would be very reasonably priced.

Hundred islands panoramic view

Tour B is more adventurous and suitable for families with teenagers or groups of young friends. It visits: Quezon, Marcos, Lopez, Clave, Old Scout, Macapagal and Bat Islands. Not only that you’re going to enjoy less crowded beaches and waters, you’ll also get to cliff jump inside a cave on Marcos Island, and do some bat and bird watching around Bat Island.

Best Hundred Islands Packages

Hundred islands viewdeck

The hotels we work with are reasonably priced, and are very close to the pier, where there are a few restaurants and bars, as well as a coffee shop. They provide excellent service, clean and serve you breakfast before you leave to your tours. If you wish to book our packages and stay elsewhere please mention it while you send us your inquiry. For higher standards and all inclusive hotels, you should spend the night in Clark or Tarlac and get to Pangasinan in the early morning.

A visit to Alaminos can never be complete without a tour to the Hundred Islands National Park, so naturally all of our packages include it, even the short 1 night stay package. Even though you’ll stay for a short while, you’ll have enough time for the island hopping day tour and have a wonderful experience. However, if you’re after the full Pangasinan experience, our 2 nights and 3 days packages are the better choice.

Hundred islands Marcos Beach

The Deluxe Package we offer is the same as the 2 nights package, but with a private new Toyota Grandia, that will escort you throughout the vacation. We’ll also take care of your lunch arrangements, and through you a lunch buffet during your island hopping tour, and a boodle fight lunch during your Bolinao tour. For larger groups coasters and buses will be arranged.

Pangasinan Travel Essentials:

  • Location : Alaminos Municipality, Pangasinan province
  • Flights : Non available – take a flight to Manila or Clark, then proceed by bus.
  • Bus : Manila buses leave from Cubao and Pasay and take betwen 5-6 hours to get there
  • Best time to visit : During the dry season – January to May
  • Attractions : Island hopping, snorkeling, kayaking, local foods, caves.

How to get there?

There’s no airport serving Pangasinan, and the only way to reach is by taking a bus. Five Star and Victory Liner are the two bus companies that run the route from Manila , with buses leaving from the Pasay or Cubao terminals every 20 minutes or so. The bus ride takes between 5 and 6 hours, depending on traffic. Both lines offer a stop at Tarlac, so it’s very possible to add the Mt. Pinatubo day tour to your package.

There’s a night bus leaving at midnight – the best option for those who wish to visit the Hundred Islands on a day tour. You’ll arrive there at 5 AM, just in time to watch the spectacular sunrise over the bay. It might be a long day, but if you only wish to visit the islands then it’s a solid option.

Another option is to grab a Victory Liner bus at Baguio , on your way to or from any of the popular North Luzon destinations, such as Ilocos or Sagada. The bus from Baguio is headed for Dagupan and stops at Alaminos – It’ll take you 3 hours to get there. This sidetrip isn’t the most efficient, but it is possible, so if it works with your general travel plans let us know and we’ll work something out.

You can take a private van for all these trips if you prefer to, but it will be expensive. Pangasinan isn’t as popular among locals as it used to be, so services are not well developed. One option could be to take a van to Tarlac and catch the bus from there – that way you cut half of the bus ride for the comfort of a spacious van.

What to do in Pangasinan?

Our Hundred Islands tour package covers all the main attractions in the area. There are 123 island and islets to explore, and island hopping tours are fully customizable. It’s better to plan ahead, but you can also speak to the tour operators once there. They’ll help you plan an itinerary packed with adventure and beautiful sights.

Other than that, there a few other things to do around the province. If you decide they are worth your time, update in advance and we’ll help you plan an itinerary. If you can afford to spend more than a day there, it’s probably better to take two different island hopping tours than searching for activities in Bolinao and Dagupan.

The three main Islands – a cornerstone in most island hopping tours

hundred islands family package

Governor’s island is the first of the main islands and it stands out for two main reasons. It’s the only island offering accommodation to its visitors – a lodge can be rented for 100$ a night. Secondly, the island also provides the only vantage point, from which you can enjoy a panoramic view of the whole area.

It’s a long 250 steps climb to the top, but it’s worth it for the spectacular view. Once you get there – you’ll understand why the long trip from Manila was worth it. If you wish to sleep on the island, let us know in advance since availability is limited. Otherwise, you can always set camp at one of the island’s beaches instead.

The second popular island is Children’s Island – which is probably the best location for families . Its shallow waters and clean beaches are the perfect playground for children, while adults can bask in the sun and relax. The island also has some picnic tables you can rent for the day, and cottages are available for overnight stays.

Lastly, there’s Quezon Island – the best place to go snorkeling. It’s also another great place for families, as its shallow waters are teeming with marine life. Quezon island has the most developed camping areas – so if you wish to spend the night in a tent this is the best place to do so. Snorkeling gear can be rented for 200 Pesos, so there’s no need to bring it.

Hundred Islands Hidden Gems and Secret attractions

For those of you who prefer nature and wildlife, the northern parts of the park are the place to go. This is where you can meet some of the most exotic inhabitants of the Hundred islands. Above all, make sure you visit Monkey Island – if you are lucky enough you might catch one of the shy monkeys who live there. The island is also a great place for snorkeling, kayaking and swimming. The only downside is this island doesn’t have a real beach to lay at.

Just near to Monkey Island is Century island, which is a great place to hike in nature. This location is famous for its high dome cave which features beautiful rock formations and houses a large population of bats and snakes. If bats are your thing, why not visit Bat island as well? It’s right next to Governor’s island and known as the best place to watch these creatures, even during daytime.

Another great place which isn’t far from Governor’s island is Virgin island. This place has white beaches and a relaxing atmosphere, with 2 interesting twists that turn the whole experience into a wild adventure. You can reach the island by using a 546 meters long zipline from the peak of Governor’s island – the longest zipline in the Philippines. Secondly, there’s a helmet diving site nearby – where you put on a helmet and walk on the ocean floor. It’s not as exciting as Boracay’s helmet diving , but still a really fun activity.

For private beaches on smaller islands away from the tourists, there are 2 which are highly recommended. Romulo Island is nothing more than a white sand beach, while Cuenco Island is slightly bigger and also has a nice cave you can explore.

Lastly, there’s Marcos Island – one of the most special places to visit during your time here. It’s a great island which offers all the standrard attractions, as well as a unique cave called Imelda Cave. You’ll go through a hole and into a a stunning cave with a deep swimming pool at its bottom. You can jump into the pool from cliff diving platforms at varying heights – between 12 and 20 feet (3.5 to 6 meters).

Other Pangasinan Attractions and Activities

Hundred islands island hopping tour

If your’e looking to spend a night near the beach, Bolinao is the best choice. This is where the best beach resorts are found, and it’s close enough to Lucap Wharf, from which tours to the Hundred Island depart. On top of that, you could visit the Bolinao enchanted cave, a stunning underwater cave with a natural spring pool in it. Visiting the swimming pool could be a really refreshing end to a long day of island hopping outdoors.

Other great beach locations are Anda and Dasol. At Anda you can snorkel and kayak, and the beach itself is very nice. Another recommended activity is the boat ride to nearby Coral island – one of the best diving spots around. Dasol, on the other hand, is on the opposite side of the Hundred Islands, nearly an hour drive away.

You can do a completely different island hopping tour here, with the main advantage being you’ll get to avoid the crowded tourists spots. Alternatively, you can just stop by Labrador – it’s between Alaminos and Dagupan and only a short drive away for either. Not much to do over there, but the beaches are amazing.

For those who wish to combine some mainland attractions with their island hopping and beach bummin’ tours, the best choice is Bolinao. There are no less than 3 different waterfalls along the Bolinao river – appropriately named Bolinao Falls 1,2 and 3. The first one is the impressive, but they are each worth a visit and they all have a nice swimming pool you can have fun in. Combine that with a visit to the enchancted cave and you are all set for a day full of adventure.

How do the Hundred Island Fit into my travel plans?

The hundred Islands at Pangasinan offer one of the best island hopping experiences in the Philippines. Being so close to Manila and providing cheap accommodation are huge advantages as well. It’s a great destination for large groups and families, who prefer to save on expenses and will likely spend most of their days outdoors anyway.

Taking the Hundred Islands package can be done in several ways. First, you can always visit it as a day tour out of Manila – you’ll have to leave the city at midnight and take the night bus, but the upside is you’ll witness the beautiful sunrise in Alaminos. Another option is booking an overnight tour package, allowing you to explore the area more throughly. Lastly, one of our most popular packages is the 3d2n tour of Pangasinan and Mt.Pinatubo – allowing you to visit 2 of the most special places in Luzon island, and experience each of them fully.

how much is the Day tour island hopping? and when will be the best months as of now?

Hi May and thanks for the good questions.

1) The exact rate depends on how many people you are. Each person has to pay 80 pesos in fees and then you need to all pay 1400 for the boat.

2) The seasons is pretty much same as in Manila and other areas of Luzon, so now isn’t the best time to go. If you can delay until November / December it would be better.

Good mornig. I am planning a time table and there are two days wish to go huandard island and baquio please let me know your email and I will send you my require.

You can find our email at our contact us page .

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Hundred Islands National Park (2024 Complete Travel Guide)

From textbooks to storybooks, I read about the Philippines’  Hundred Islands. As a kid, I couldn’t imagine how and what dozens of islands would look like.

I only heard how beautiful the marine life is and how many islands there are that you won’t be able to see all in just a day. Oh boy, how true the stories were! When Ryk and I went there, it was truly a wonderful place!

Hundred Islands

From a bridge that connects two islands to a free fall into a cave plunging down to the waters below to camping with only the sea and stars as your companion for the night.

We’ve been to Pangasinan’s Hundred Island twice. We wrote the first version of this article way back 2016. We recently visited Alaminos in August 2022 so we’ve updated this post.

Here are tips on visiting this National Park.

Table of Contents

About Hundred Islands National Park

Hundred Islands National Park is a protected area of the Philippines located in the province of Pangasinan. It is made up of 123 islands at high tide (and 124 at low tide) and islets stretching over an area of 16.76 square kilometers.

The park is a popular tourist destination due to its crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches, and water activities.

Best Time to Visit Hundred Islands Alaminos

The best time to visit Hundred Islands is from December to May when the weather is dry. Avoid the rainy season from June to November. Boats have a hard time going to the islands during the rainy season. The ocean waves can get really high and it becomes dangerous to go out to sea.

How to Get There

Hundred Islands is located in Alaminos, Pangasinan. The best way to get there is by taking a bus from Manila to Alaminos. You can find buses bound for Alaminos from Cubao or Pasay. Travel time is approximately 4-6 hours.

If you’re joining an organized tour, there are many tour agencies on Facebook that offer Hundred Islands tours. Tour packages typically include boat rental, entrance fees, life vest rental, and snorkeling gear rental.

Travel Tip: Check schedules and availability of buses to Pangasinan to book online with 12Go Asia.

Once you’re in Alaminos, you can take a tricycle to the Lucap Wharf where the jump-off point is located. You need to pay an environmental fee and boat rental before going to the islands.

There are 2 ways to explore Hundred Islands: Do-It-Yourself or join an organized tour. If you’re doing it on your own, you can rent a boat from the Tourism Information Center at the Lucap Wharf. See fees below.

Things to See and Do in Hundred Islands National Park Alaminos, Pangasinan

Island hopping.

hundred islands

One of the most popular things to do in Hundred Islands is island hopping. You can visit some of the popular islands like Governor’s Island, Children’s Island, Quezon Island, and Marcos Island. There are many other smaller islands that you can explore as well.

Snorkeling and Swimming

Hundred Islands is a great place to go snorkeling and swimming. The water is crystal clear and there are many colorful fish to see. Be sure to wear reef safe sunscreen as the sun can be quite strong.

We went snorkeling on one of the islands. The water was crystal clear and the visibility was great. We saw a lot of colorful fish and corals just a few meters away from thee island. Hundred islands is teeming with marine life. It’s a great place to snorkel in.

If you’re looking for a bit of adventure, you can go kayaking around the islands. Rent a kayak at Children’s island and paddle your way around the different islands.

Hike Up Pilgrimage Island

hundred islands

For a great view of the islands, you can hike up to the top of Pilgrimage Island. It’s a bit of a climb but it’s worth it for the views.

Have a picnic

One of the best things to do in Hundred Islands is to have a picnic on one of the many islands. Be sure to pack your own food and drinks. Food can be expensive on the islands. You can rent a shed or a table for lunch.

If you’re looking for a thrill, you can go ziplining. Unfortunately, it was drizzling when we arrived on Quezon island. They do not operate the zipline when it’s raining. It’s also important to note that there’s a weight limit. When we visited, the max weight allowed was 60 kg.

Banana Boat

hundred islands

Imagine touring around the islands on a banana boat. That’s what this is. We were impressed with how far the boat took us. We were waiting for one of us to fall off but no one did (bummer).

Cliff Jumping

This is for the adrenaline junkies out there. You can cliff jump into the water on a bat cave in Marcos island. It’s a must-try!

Helmet Diving

hundred islands

This was the highlight of our trip! Compared to the helmet diving in Boracay , you’ll see a lot more in Hundred Islands. Plus, it’s way cheaper than in Boracay. We saw giant clams underwater and lots of fishes!

Off to the Hundred Islands

Travel Tips to Hundred Islands

This place has so much to offer and considering how little time there is to explore all of it, I would just go out of line to give you at least a list of what we should have done to make our trip better.

Bring your own drinking water and snacks

Save some money. Buy food at the Lucap Wharf before riding the boat to the islands. The canteen in Quezon island sells expensive food.

Charter a boat

Having a boat all to yourselves would hurt your wallet but in exchange, you would have the liberty to go where you want, at your own time, at your own accord. That means, you go where you want to and you can even bargain with the boatmen to stop by some islands that others don’t usually go to as opposed to chipping in with a few strangers that get you just about only 15 minutes per island.

Bring your own tent

Bringing your own tent lets you save a few hundred pesos compared to renting one. I would say that our overnight stay via camping in the Hundred Islands was the best part of our trip.

We were able to choose where to pitch our tent, by the beach, or by the island’s peak. The joy of having an island to yourself for the whole night while waiting for the sunrise and getting contented with how clear and bright the stars shined, it was awe-inspiring.

Children's Island Beach

Get a better snorkeling gear

If you’re in this blog that means you’re no stranger to big masses of water, with that said renting a poor snorkeling gear is not advised since its price is the same as buying a new one.

In addition, if you lost the one you rented, you’d have to pay for it. Also, get those flippers to have better control under there.

Live it before taking the shot

I know, taking pictures helps keep the memories preserved but please take some time first to close your eyes, feel the breeze, caress the sand, listen to the waves and birds, and enjoy the moment through your eyes before you put it on a screen.

Chilling by the Island

What to Pack for Your Trip to Hundred  Islands

Be sure to pack your sunscreen, hats, swimwear, and snacks. You’ll also want to bring your own snorkeling gear if you plan on going snorkeling (or you can rent one). Life jackets are required on the boat when island hopping.

Where to Stay in Hundred Islands Alaminos

You can either camp on the islands or book a room:

Where to Camp in the Hundred Islands

Camping? You can rent a tent or bring your own. Here are the three most recommended islands to camp in.

Tent Rentals

  • Large Tent (5 to 6 persons) – P1,000 includes 5 pillows, 2 bedsheet, 1 mat & 2 container of fresh water
  • Medium Tent (3 to 4 persons) – P700 includes 3 pillows, 2 bedsheet, 1 mat & 2 container of fresh water
  • Small Tent (1 to 3 persons) – P500 includes 2 pillows, 1 bedsheet, 1 mat & 1 container of fresh water

Governor’s Island

This island is usually the first go-to place for boatmen. It’s pretty famous for having a peak where you can get a view of all the other islands. The island is connected to a nearby island by a bridge. How cool is that? Another thing is there’s a zip line connecting the island to another.

If you decide to camp here, there is a sari-sari store but the prices are expensive. There is also an available toilet and shower area on the island which is a plus for comfortable camping in the Hundred Islands.

Governor's Island Bridge

Quezon Island

From the usual banana boat rides to jet ski’s, the island offers a lot of water activities. It is near the snorkeling site where you get to see giant clams. By giant, I mean B.I.G. Getting to see one up close was wow! and scary. I couldn’t help but admire their beauty but at the same time, I was imagining how it might suck me in. Haha. I know that would be close to impossible but hey it’s my brain. I get to imagine things.

Among other islands, Quezon Island is the most developed so expect picnic areas, cottages, comfort rooms, showers, and electricity at night.

Hundred Islands

Children’s Island

The shallow water and rich marine life near the beach convinced us to give Children’s Island a try. We pitched our tent and camped the night. Thinking back, it was one of the best camping in the Hundred Islands experience I’ve ever had!

We had the island all to ourselves excluding the caretaker, of course. Just like Quezon Island, there’s electricity, a nearby bathroom, and toilet. But I have to warn you, the bathroom and toilet aren’t maintained, there are even holes on the roof so don’t expect much.

Children's Island

While beach bumming on the island, some locals came to sell crabs at P280 a kilo. Since we were both fans of seafood, we grabbed the chance and bought some for dinner. I’m not sure though if they really do sell these on the island or if it’s just a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

Crabs at Hundred Islands

Accommodations Near Lucap Wharf

There are also rooms for rent on Quezon island but they are quite expensive. I’d recommend you book one of the accommodations near Lucap Wharf.

We stayed in Island Tropic Hotel and Restaurant . The rooms are clean and affordable. They even provide free breakfasts! It’s just behind the Tourism Information Center so you don’t have to walk far to get to your boat.

Here are other accommodations that we recommend:

  • Islandia Hotel
  • Asia Novo Boutique Hotel
  • Treasure Isle Guesthouse

How many days should I spend in Hundred Islands?

I recommend you spend at least 2 days in Hundred Islands. This will give you enough time to explore the different islands and do some activities. But a day tour is also possible if you’re short on time.

What is the best time to visit Hundred Islands?

The best time to visit is during the dry season to avoid the rain. March to May are the busiest months so it’s best to avoid these times if you want to avoid the crowds. Weekdays are also less crowded than weekends.

Just a quick update. All For Rent Nipas’ with Room have been eroded as part of its beautification which started last summer. New pavilion have been erected at Quezon island and another house too, making it only two houses. One at Governors Islands (known as PBB House) at the said island.

It’s indeed more fun in the Philippines.

Been there last April 2014 and feels great to be back. You can see and feel the difference unlike before. No nipa huts, corals are cleaner and a new Pavilion at Quezon Island.

Great time to enhance my photo shoot skills as well.

Thanks for sharing Mr Lakwatsero!

Things to do in Hundred Islands

There’s definitely more to Hundred Islands than mere sightseeing. Here are the top activities to do here:

1. Island hopping

Hundred Islands island hopping

Of course, every Hundred Islands experience starts with island hopping. Our assigned banca (outrigger boat) toured us around the national park where we visited the taklobo (giant clam) sanctuary and passed by some uniquely shaped islands like Turtle Island and Crocodile Island .

Turtle Island and Crocodile Island in Pangasinan

We also stopped by the tourist islands including Quezon Island where we saw Manuel Quezon’s big statue, and Governor’s Island where we had fun picture-taking outside Bahay ni Kuya (Pinoy Big Brother House). We also entered the Cuenco Cave near Children’s Island .

Overall, our island hopping experience was so fun and memorable!

2. Swimming and snorkeling

Hundred Islands beach

If you’re wondering whether you can swim here, yes, you can, but there are only designated swimming areas. If you want to go snorkeling, you may rent a snorkeling gear set for ₱150 per person.

3. Kayaking

Kayaks on the beach

There are also kayaks available for rent if you wish to go kayaking around the area. The kayak rental rate is ₱250 per hour, good for two people.

4. Ziplining

6. Overnight stay

Mayor's Island guest house

If one day is not enough for you to enjoy the beauty of Hundred Islands, then consider an overnight stay by camping or renting one of the guest houses.

You may rent a tent for ₱400 but you also need to pay ₱200 for the tent space or pitching fee. The non-aircon guest house costs ₱5,000 per night while an aircon one like the PBB House costs ₱10,000 per night.

You may refer to this list of Hundred Islands rates , but be sure to contact the Alaminos City Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office as the rates are subject to change and availability.

Travel tips

  • As you’ll mostly be outdoors, wear something comfortable that’s also ready for a beach getaway.
  • Use reef-friendly sunscreen if possible.
  • Bring some snacks and drinks in case you feel famished along the way.
  • You may bring extra clothes if you want to swim or do water activities.
  • If you want to protect your mobile phones and other gadgets, we recommend using waterproof bags.
  • Follow the protocols set by the tourism office.
  • Respect your tour guide and stay close to your group.
  • Do not leave any trash and keep the environment clean at all times.

Is Hundred Islands worth visiting and would we recommend it?

Yes, it is worth visiting, especially if you love nature and the outdoors. However, if you easily get tired of long trips, a day tour may not be ideal for you. We suggest that you stay near the area for a night like we did. We actually spent a night in one of the budget-friendly accommodations in Alaminos City so we didn’t have to rush home.

But if you don’t mind the long land travel, go for a Hundred Islands day tour as it’s convenient and more practical since you won’t have to pay for a place to stay in Pangasinan.

Hundred Islands: A Trip Back to Pangasinan

 alt=

Hundred Islands National Park is the most famous tourist attraction in the province of Pangasinan. Why not? aside from its beaches, islands, and wildlife, its name is quite amazing and intriguing. As a kid would ask, “Wow, is it really composed of one hundred islands?”

Well, it actually lived up to its promise. It has 123 islets scattered on a vast blue ocean. There are 4 major islands there that are developed, but there are still more to discover and explore in the coming years. Exciting, isn’t it? If you’re planning to travel to Hundred Islands in Alaminos, this travel guide is for you.

My Experience at Hundred Islands

I could still remember the last time I traveled to Hundred Islands National Park in Alaminos, Pangasinan.

I was a newbie TV producer then for a major network. I did a story about a coastal clean-up and mangrove planting in Alaminos, and we had a side trip to the Hundred Islands. It was my first time and I would love to enjoy the islands and the beach, but I was too focused on work. I had so many things to do and coordinate that I almost forgot the beauty that surrounded me.

Many are arguing that it is possible to work, travel and enjoy at the same time. For business travelers, that is possible, but not when you’re working for TV. I mean the segment producers, cameramen and those who do fieldwork. For someone like me who was able to experience corporate job and TV work, I can say that it is possible to mix travel with work when it comes to business and corporate jobs, but definitely not when you’re working as a producer for TV.

That’s exactly what happened to me when I was in Hundred Islands. I was there with the islands and beach, but not actually present. So if I see a Facebook post of a former colleague in the media, sharing their photos in a destination, and that they’re there for a story or assignment. I am not quite impressed. I know that they won’t be able to enjoy there supposed “ travel .” There’s just too much work for them.

Hundred Islands Alaminos Pangasinan

I directed the shoot with volunteers from a school there while they were planting mangroves on the wide shores of Alaminos. I interviewed people about the environmental implications of the depleting mangroves in the area, and how the “planting” activity can help the community in the years to come. Honestly, I had that strange feeling that the story was just a show-off, I just hoped that the seedlings that we planted will really have a positive impact in the years to come, that the plants were nurtured and we genuinely instilled care for the environment for the locals.

Later that night, I interviewed the Mayor of the town. He was very accommodating. I didn’t quite understand why we need to interview a politician for a mere story of mangrove planting. I just made the interview interesting. I tried hard to infuse some depth in the conversation like “What are their plans and projects to protect the environment, to protect Hundred Islands.

We had our dinner then traveled back to Manila. Upon arrival to the office, my team of cameramen went home to finally rest. While me, I still had to write the script and endure a non-stop 3 day of editing until the story is ready for airing.

Yes, I traveled to Hundred Islands at that time, but I couldn’t remember any significant memories about the trip. It felt empty.

After a long time, probably about 8 years, I traveled back to Alaminos, Pangasinan.

Back to Hundred Islands

Hundred Islands Alaminos Pangasinan

The place looked better and more organized. Even the port itself, they also have a better system for boat queuing for the island hopping.  But the 50 pesos additional rental for the life jacket is funny though. They said, the life vest was free, but if you’re going to use it outside the boat to roam around the island, you need to pay a rental fee of 50 pesos.

They also have this plastic floating bridge to make the boarding to the boat a little less stressful. A few minutes off the shore, I discovered that some islands have this same floating bridge. The place has really changed after all these years.

It has more than 123 islets but 4 are developed for tourists to enjoy namely Governors Island, Marcos Island, Children’s Island, and Quezon Island. There are other islands that are starting to be developed but these 4 are the major attractions as of now.

Our first stop was the Governors Island, probably one of the largest islands in the national park. These are actually like two islands connected with a plastic floating bridge in orange color. Eloi and I crossed the bridge, took some photos and explored the beach on the other side of the island.

Hundred Islands Alaminos Pangasinan

We were back on the boat, and passed some of the famous islands like Romulo island, Turtle and Scout islands among others until we stayed for a few minutes of swimming at Marcos Island.

Most of our travel buddies decided to explore the cave on the island, but us, maybe due to being a Tito and Tita of Manila , decided to chill at the beach.

Hundred Islands Alaminos Pangasinan

We just sat there, enjoying the place, talking about anything. Later that afternoon, we then transferred to Quezon island, to kill some time before going back to the mainland.

Quezon Island probably has the best sand among the islands there. It’s white and powdery. We went up to the third floor of one house there just to eat. There was no more option in terms of food, so I just bought some cup noodles.

We ate for a few more minutes and watched the sunset.

Hundred Islands Alaminos Pangasinan

It was a nice feeling coming back to Hundred Islands. It brought back a lot of memories from my first visit, but still, I was able to see the place in a new light, maybe because there are a lot of changes that happened in the course of more than 8 years.

We went back to the mainland and surprised by the awesome Christmas lights and decorations in the park. My travel friends were joking that we were at Disneyland. There were so many lights that it in a way uplifted our emotions. Traveling can sometimes be tiring but it recharges, re-energizes your soul to move forward. Whatever circumstances that you’re in, get up and explore further.

How to get to Hundred Islands

There are now so many options and bus companies that offer daily trips to Alaminos , but probably the most popular is Victory Liner in Cubao. This is where we usually ride the bus going north of the country, whether it’s Baguio or Pangasinan. Fare is about Php 400

Once you arrived in Alaminos, ask for the Lucap Terminal. That’s where you’ll find tricycles going to Lucap Wharf or now called Don Gonzalo Montemayor Wharf, which is the jump-off for island hopping. Fare is Php 15 per person, but it will not leave until its full. As an alternative, you may charter the tricycle for Php 100. Lucap Wharf has improved tremendously over the past years. The last time I was in Alaminos, this was just a usual port with the Hundred Islands structures and letters on it. Now it is filled with buildings and a Tourism Office.

Please be reminded that there is like an entrance fee of Php 300 each, and Environmental fees of Php 40 pesos for Day tour and Php 80 for overnight.

Going to Hundred Islands by Car?

Road trips by having your own car or a rented van is definitely much better than public transport right? Going to Pangasinan is a lot easier these days because of SCTEX, then take the Luisita, Tarlac Exit and go for the route to Camiling. From Camiling, you will pass through the towns of San Clemente, Mangatarem, Aguilar, Bugallon, Labrador and Sual before finally arriving in Alaminos. By the way, Waze is also helpful.

There are also some Tour Companies that offer travel to hundred islands, just check events on Facebook and check their itinerary.

From Clark, Pampanga to Alaminos, Pangasinan

From Clark International Airport, take a jeepney going to Dau Central Bus Terminal. Then ride a bus going to Alaminos.

From Manaog to Hundred Islands in Alaminos

You have the option of either riding a van or bus going to Dagupan. Once you’re in Dagupan, ride another PUV to Alaminos. Then another tricycle to the Lucap Wharf as jump-off to Hundred Islands.

From Dagupan to Hundred Islands

Going to Alaminos from Daguan is roughly more than an hour of bus ride. You can also ride a van. Once in Alaminos, it’s just a tricycle away to Lucap Wharf.

From Baguio to Hundred Islands

Baguio as a highly-urbanized city has more options going to Alaminos, either bus or van. Once you arrive in Alaminos , you know what to do. Ride a tricycle to Lucap Wharf.

Things to do in Hundred Islands

As a summer destination perfect for family and friends, there are a lot of activities to do in Hundred islands from relaxing on the beach to those extreme adventures. Here are some of these to choose from as well as the prices.

Island Hopping – Popular for having more than 100 islands and islets, island hopping is one of the most popular activities to do. Though we can’t explore all islands, it is still an amazement to see those little islands scattered and overlooking the vast ocean. There are actually islands that are good for tourism that you can explore via the standard island-hopping tour like Governor’s Island, Quezon Island, Marcos Island and Children’s Island. The price of the island hopping depends on the type of boat and of course the number of passengers. Day tour costs from 1,400 PHP to 2000 PHP for 5 to 15 passengers. For a Two- Day tour the price is ranging from 3,000PHP to 5,000PHP for 5 to 15 people. This is subject to change so better contact the Alaminos Tourism office to be sure. If you happen to avail the Two Day tour, of course, you’ll be able to explore more islands like Romulo Island, Lopez Island, Turtle Island and a lot more!

Swimming – Of course this is an old-time favorite activity during summer. Hundred Island has lots of awesome beaches and islands to go swimming like Governor’s Island, Quezon Island and Children’s Island.

Kayaking – There is definitely more adventure awaits in Hundred Islands and one of these is Kayaking! For as low as 250 pesos per hour good for 2 persons, you can explore the islands. Of course, make sure you have proper safety gear like a life vest.

Snorkeling – Hundred islands is also home of rich marine life especially the giant clams. When I was still a TV producer and we did a story in Hundred Islands, I remember seeing a lot of giant clams and these are being taken care of by the local government. For only PHP 250, you can rent snorkeling gear and witness the beauty of a hundred islands underwater.

Banana Boat –  This favorite family and barkada bonding is also available in Hundred Islands for only PHP 1,500 for 7 persons.

Jet Ski – This exciting water activity is only 2000 pesos for 30 mins.

Parasailing – When you’re enjoying Hundred Islands you’ll definitely witness some tourists doing parasailing. Another exciting adventure for everyone. This costs PHP 2000.

Zipline – Yes, there is a zipline in Hundred Islands which can be found at Governor’s Island and Quezon Island for PHP 100 to PHP 250.

There is a standard fee for all island hopping tours and other services, so it is better to coordinate with them.
  • Where to eat in Hundred islands? Nothing to worry. Now, the place has enough carinderias and restaurants to choose from. If you want more choices, you can go to the town proper, you can find fast-food chains there.
  • You know the drill for DIY. It is better to travel at night to avoid crowd and traffic. Go to the bus terminal and catch the earliest trip.
  • The best time to travel to Hundred Islands is during summer. But of course, starting November or December is fine, just check the weather and make sure there’s no typhoon.
  • During island hopping, make sure you have enough water, and food also.
  • For rates for other water activities, please also coordinate with the Tourism Office.
  • If you have enough time, you can do a side trip to Cabongaoan Beach in Burgos, Pangasinan or in Bolinao . To maximize your time, it is better to leave Manila as early as 1AM to arrive in Alaminos early morning.
  • You can buy souvenirs in the nearby stores around the Wharf or go directly to the Tourism Office.
  • The day tour starts at 6:00 AM until 5:30 AM only. If you wish to stay overnight in the islands, you’re only allowed to leave Lucap Wharf until 6:30 PM only. The camping fee is Php 250 per night. You can bring your own tent, but if you don’t have, you can rent for Php 500. The main camping site is Quezon island.
  • Always be a responsible traveler. Leave no trace always. Bring all your garbage back to the mainland and do a proper disposal.
  • Mobile signal and Internet are available in the Hundred Islands National park
  • There is one ATM at the Tourist Information Center. You can also check more ATM at the town proper. But please be reminded that payment for services is on cash basis. So bring enough cash, okay?

Why you should visit Hundred Islands

It has always been a fascination as a kid to someday visit Hundred Islands. As a popular destination featured in our textbooks at school, you don’t have any idea how excited I was when I first traveled to hundred islands. But sadly, the stress and pressure of my work then as a TV producer ruined all the excitement.

Good thing after so many years, I’ve got a chance to go back and enjoy the place purely of the sole purpose of travel. I can say that one must visit hundred islands not only because it is an awesome summer getaway but to personally satisfy your curiosity about this place. Yes, there are roughly about a hundred islands (123 to be exact) there but only a handful can be visited, but the view of those islets when you do the island hopping is of course fascinating. So if you’ll have the time and budget, Hundred Islands in Alaminos, Pangasinan is a must place to visit, especially during summer!

More Info about Hundred Islands

Known as the first protected area and national park in northern Philippines, Hundred Islands has a total of 123 islands scattered in Lingayen Gulf covering an area of 16.76 square kilometers. Three islands were developed for tourism at first namely Governor Island, Quezon and Children’s island, but as the years go by more islands are added to be explored by tourists.

Hundred Islands National park was created by Presidential Proclamation No. 667 signed by then President Manuel L. Quezon on January 18, 1940 for Filipinos to have a tourist destination to enjoy and as well as be protected. On June 21, 2005, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed the Executive Order No. 436 to transfer the management, administration and maintenance of the national park from the Philippine Tourism Authority to the city government of Alaminos, Pangasinan.

Hi, did you visit there during a weekend or a weekday? How’s the Volume of people in each island?

We visited this last November, okay naman ang volume ng tourists. I think expect na mas marami ang tao ngayong summer.

' src=

Hi, is it still recommended to stay overnight on the island or better to stay in a hotel and go back to the island? Also, what else can we visit aside from the islands? Appreciate your reply 🙂

Mas advisable ang mag island hopping then mag stay sa isang hotel sa mainland. 🙂

Travel Guide for the Hundred Islands National Park, Pangasinan

Going to an isle hopping is one of the activities that I am looking for whenever I get to visit a new place. Well, the idea of visiting isle with equally unique beauty and features fascinates me a lot. It is as if, I can visit different realms of the world with just one activity. One of the activities that I was able to try out is the Hundred Islands National Park.

At first, I initially thought that it is indeed a total of 100! Only to be informed later on that there are a total of 123 isles during high tide and 124 during low tide season. Yes! I found it as an opportunity to satisfy my boating/sightseeing fascination. The Hundred Islands National Park is located in the City of Alaminos, Pangasinan. The travel here coming from Manila will only take about 4 to 5 hours. After that, you are bound to a fantastic isle-hopping adventure of a lifetime. In fact, because of the natural beauty of the place, it was hailed as one of the National Geological Monuments of the Philippines, or the entire archipelago. With the belief that the age of the park is about 2 million years old, it is no wonder that it had begun to attract the attention of a lot of tourists way before it was fully developed.

Things to do in The Hundred Islands |Tour, Tourist Spots, and Activities

The destination of the isle hopping activity may vary depending on the whims of the tourists riding the boat. But, of all the spots, there are three top developed areas for tourism purposes.

Quezon Island

First of these three is the Quezon Island. It has a total of 2 dining pavilions, restrooms, grilling site, nipa huts, and a scenic white sandbar. Also, it holds a large clam garden which deeply fascinates the tourists. The isle was named after the former president Manuel Quezon. All in all, this spot is a complete package is I may say.

Things to do at Quezon Island

  •  120m zip line -P100.00
  •  Wall Climbing -P50.00
  •  Rappelling -P50.00
  •  Banana Boat -P250.00/head (min. of 6persons)
  •  Helmet Diving -P400.00/ 15mins.
  •  Kayaking (max of 2 persons) -P250.00/hour
  •  Parasailing – P2,000.00/pax; P3,000.00/2pax
  •  Jetski 1-2pax – P1,000/ 15 mins.
  •  Hanging bridge
  • Cottages are also available

Governor’s Island

The second developed spot in the Hundred Islands National Park, Pangasinan is the Governor’s Island. It has a stretch of white sand beach, a cave that has different bats and swiftlets, and a fantastic view deck which allows the tourists to have a glimpse of all the other areas as the background. The trek heading to the view deck may not be an easy one, but I can assure you that the view at the top will be very worth the sweat. The overnight accommodation in the Big Brother House (used as a location for shooting a Philippine reality show) is also available for an overnight stay.

Things to do at the Governors Island

  • Short Trek to the viewing deck
  • 546m zip line -P250.00
  • Inflatable bridge

Children’s Island

The third developed spot is the children’s island which is known for being suited for families. The water is shallow, making it perfect for children to swim without worrying too much about their safety. Staying here will be possible by renting a tent for a camp-like stay.

Other Islands

Other tourist spots in  Hundred Islands National Park, Pangasinan includes the Century (haven of the locals during the World War 2 era), Marcos, New Scout, Lopez, Clave, Old Scout, Martha and Ramos, Cuenco, Romulo, Devi, Cathedral, Guiya, Bangar, Turtle, Braganza, Hernandez, Abad Santos, Sulpot, Cariaz, Moneky, Sison, Shell, and Camantiles Islands. These places are also open for exploration as apart of your boat hopping activity. If I may suggest, I urge you to choose about 10 to 13 areas to visit if you plan to spend an entire day of hopping. Aside from this, snorkeling, diving, and all other fun water sports and activities are possible. So, you have to choose which one you are best comfortable to do, and the park has it for you.

  • Old Scout Island  – ideal for swimming and one of the best areas for snorkeling Pilgrimage Island – you can go swimming in this area as well as Trekking to Christ the Savior statue
  • Lopez Island – good for swimming; with some cottages; you can also go for  345m zip line at P250.00
  • Romulo Island – the place has nice white sand and the area is for swimming/snorkeling
  • Cuenco Island – ideal for dipping or you can go for a 10ft. Cliff jumping
  • Marcos Island – nice place for dipping, snorkeling or try the 30ft cliff jumping
  • Virgin Island – go swimming or spelunking; you can also do a zipline from Governors Island

All in all, the Hundred Islands National Park is suited for those who would like to experience a beach life without too much noise and party. Your stay here might be a quiet one, but the tranquility and serenity it brings are beyond one can explain. Plan your trip heading to this park, and I know that you’ll get your ultimate summer beaching goals. Good luck!

Additionally, cultural festivals are held every month in different towns in Pangasinan. The two most attended revelries are the Bangus Festival and Pista'y Dayat.

Bangus Festival attractions you should watch out for include a colorful street dancing competition called the Gilon-Gilon ed Baley, which is participated by contingents from the 31 barangays of Dagupan City.

Adorned with vibrant costumes and creative milkfish figures, the performers put on an entertaining display of showmanship as they re-enact the "Gilon" (a local term for harvesting bangus) while parading the streets of Dagupan.

Aside from the street parade, you can also witness other cultural events, local art fairs, sports competitions, parties, and a cooking contest featuring chefs demonstrating the hundred different ways of cooking bangus.

Pista’y Dayat | May

Celebrated every 1st of May in Lingayen, Pangasinan, Pista'y Dayat—meaning "Sea Festival"—is a festival intended to express gratitude to the year's bountiful sea harvest.

A medley of activities is held the whole month of May highlighted by a parade of local boats called "Banca Parada", happening along the Limahong Channel of the Agno River.

Traditional Pangasinense cuisine is known for the use of "bagoong" (fish paste) either as a condiment or a main ingredient. Many travelers always make it a point to stop by the town of Lingayen to buy bottles of bagoong as pasalubongs.

Compared to the typical bangus cultivated in freshwater, the ones on Pangasinan are bred and harvested in the salt water of the Lingayen Gulf. The coastal towns of Bolinao, Dagupan and Alaminos are where you can find rows of restaurants serving an assortment of bangus dishes and other seafood staples.

Hundred Islands Pangasinan (DIY GUIDE): The Jewels of Alaminos

Here is a comprehensive DIY travel guide to Hundred Islands National Park, one of the top tourist spots in Alaminos, Pangasinan. Discover the best things to do and the most popular attractions. Read on.

If I remember it right, there was only an instance or two when I got to see a beach and swim on seawaters during my childhood years.

I grew up in the remote Cordilleran mountains and rarely had the chance to visit the lowlands. That holds true for my two other siblings as well.

So when I told them that I would bring them to the Hundred Islands National Park, they leaped with superb joy and excitement. Since elementary, we’ve been hearing about it and seeing it in our textbooks.

So we were all in swelling eagerness and excitement to personally glimpse and experience its wonders.

Even our dad tagged along though he’s not really into traveling. This was our very first family weekend getaway outside the Cordilleras.

Our jump-off was Baguio City since that is where we were staying at that time. From there, we took an early bus to Pangasinan, dropped off at Urdaneta City, hopped on a bus to Dagupan, then rode another bus there to reach Alaminos. This is where the Hundred Islands National Park is located.

This is a long article as we’ll discuss every essential detail you need to know. But if you wish, you can skip some parts. Check out the Table of Contents for the specific information you are looking for.

Things to Do in Hundred Islands Pangasinan

Hundred Islands National Park in Pangasinan

There were four of us in the group, and we opted for a day tour. I was hoping that’s more than enough to explore the most famous sights in the Hundred Islands.

Obviously, we rented a small boat. I gave a tip to the boatman because I knew how exhausting it is to work all day long with minimal pay.

From the dock, we set off to explore the islands. Just riding a boat was a fascinating experience itself for me.

Seeing the bluish sea and the forest-clad islets and islands thrilled me like crazy. I bet even my siblings were blown away by the sights.

The usual itinerary for a day tour is to visit the four major islands, namely: Governor’s Island, Children’s Island, Marcos Island, and Quezon Island plus islets within or near them.

On each of the islands, there are unique activities you can do. Here are some of them:

1. Snorkeling

Snorkeling at Hundred Islands National Park in Pangasinan

This is my favorite, and even my siblings say so. Although the corals are no longer as healthy and vibrant, we did see different fish species and giant clams!

Thankfully, there are parts of the park, wherein, human activities are prohibited to restore the corals.

Hopefully, I can see healthy and thriving coral reefs the next time I come back. By the way, you need to allot Php 250 for snorkeling gears.

2. Swimming

You can swim on almost every island you will visit. Just make sure you don’t swim too far from the coast and always wear your life vest. How I loved swimming with the fishes and playing with seaweeds.

Although expect crowds on every island, there are portions that are non-touristy. For an introvert like me, swimming in a less crowded spot is just heaven.

From time to time, we would catch sight of corals and different marine species.

3. Island Hopping

Swimming at Hundred Islands National Park in Pangasinan

With over a hundred islets and islands in the Hundred Islands National Park, island hopping is a top activity. But you don’t need to see all of them.

Visiting just the four major islands is already more than enough to call it a lifelong adventure. That’s the standard itinerary for a day tour. And we visited these four islands in half a day.

But if you plan to continue tomorrow, you can check out other remoter islands such as: Sulpot Island, Abad Santos Island, Devil Island, Lopez Island, Romulo Island, Turtle Island, and Hernandez Island.

4. Go for a Pilgrimage

If you’re a Catholic, there is an island with a huge statue of Jesus as well as crosses leading to it, signifying the Stations of the Cross. Following these crosses towards the statue makes up to an ideal spiritual retreat.

It was sort of a challenging hike when we came here, though, because of the simmering midday heat. We almost slept when we rested at the peak of the island where the statue stands.

5. Trekking and more trekking

Wildlife watching at Hundred Islands National Park in Pangasinan

Some islands have high points that offer a panoramic view of the surrounding islands and the sea. You have to trek to reach these points. Don’t worry.

It’s easy trekking as trails are well-established and trees line most of these, giving you natural shade. From time to time, you’ll catch sight of colorful birds as well as flowers and other flora and fauna species.

6. Kayaking

I hope to do this the next time I visit. Who would not love paddling a boat from one island to the next and just immersing in rustic sceneries?

Rent for a kayak in an hour is Php 250, and for a whole day rental, the fee is Php 750. A kayak is good for two people. Feel like an American Indian explorer navigating the ocean with your kayak!

7. Cliff Jumping

Oh, my brother and I did this several times. On every island we visited, we immediately searched for a good cliff and then jumped or dived our way into the deep part of the sea.

We’ve been doing this on the river in our village. But this time, we tested our courage on seawater. It was exhilarating, indeed! If you’re an adrenaline junkie, don’t miss out on this.

The most recommended site for cliff jumping is Marcos Island.

You can do this at either Governor’s Island (546 meters) for Php 250 per jump or at the Quezon Island (120 meters) for Php 100 meters per jump. Honestly, we were saving money so we had to skip this.

But if you have an extra, you should try this for an adrenaline-pumping experience.

9. Banana Boat

Another popular activity here is banana boating. You just have to pay Php 1500 per ride and that is good for 7 persons. Wouldn’t it be fun riding on it with your family or friends? Just make sure you don’t fall off.

10. Rappelling

Want to test your limits? Try rappelling on selected cliffs at Hundred Islands National Park. But don’t worry. You’ll be safe as long as you follow the protocols. The fee for this is Php 50 per person.

11. Parasailing

Sounds new? Although it’s a bit costly, you’ll surely love the adventure and the thrill that come with it. For a solo ride, the fee is Php 2000 while the fee for two persons is Php 3000.

12. Fishing

Rent for fishing rods and bait is Php 150 for a day tour and Php 250 for an overnight tour. Wouldn’t it be another unique experience if you fish for your lunch/meal?

13. Jet Ski

It’s also a costly activity, but if you have an extra, why not? Enjoy riding on a jet ski as you explore the wonders of the Hundred Islands National Park. For every 15 minutes, the rate is Php 1000 and Php 2000 for every 30 minutes.

14. Wall Climbing

There are not many tall trees to climb in Hundred Islands National Park. But it does have multiple cliffs or rock formations, which are ideal for that. The fee is Php 50 per person. Surely, you’ll feel like a victor assaulting a challenging cliff.

15. Sunbathing

Enjoying the beach at Hundred Islands National Park in Pangasinan

Ah, there’s just nothing like it lying on the sandy beach as the waves caressed my feet and the sun warmed me that cool morning.

Oops, I don’t actually do sunbathing but just exposed myself to the sun temporarily to get a dose of Vitamin D. Hello. I want to maintain my original skin color (hehehe).

16. See some wildlife

On every island, you’ll find natural terrestrial and marine ecosystems. So expect to see wildlife species such as birds and even monitor lizards. We also visited a cave that hosts bats.

Encountering this wildlife deepened my appreciation of nature. Those are extras you’ll see aside from the different fish species you’ll find when you go swimming or snorkeling.

Best Islands to See in Hundred Islands

Although there are over 100 islands and islets in Hundred Islands National Park, less than 10 of these are open for tourism activities. This is a good thing, though, because it allows the preservation of the rich biodiversity of the park.

Take note. Hundred Islands National Park is rich in both terrestrial and marine species. That makes it a biodiversity hotspot, and properly implementing tourism can boost conservation.

Here are some of the best islands to see in Hundred Islands National Park. Take note. There is limited access to some of these.

1. Governor’s Island/Virgin Island

hundred islands tour

Governor’s Island is typically the first stop on any boat tour. It is among the biggest islands with a view deck atop of it. From here, you’ll get a bird’s eye view of the surrounding islets and islands.

This is also the starting point of a zip line that leads to Virgin Island. The Governor’s Island is also connected with the Virgin Island via a floating bridge. At the end of the later, one can find a small cave containing a statue of a mermaid.

2. Braganza Island

If you prefer a less touristy spot, you should visit Braganza Island. Not every boatman does a stopover here but you can request yours if you want some time of solitude. It has a view deck sitting on a lower elevation.

There’s not much to see here though you’ll experience tranquility. It has a small stretch of powdery beach where you can relax and relish the song of the waves.

3. Coral Garden

Enjoying the waters at Hundred Islands National Park in Pangasinan

Ah, this is my favorite. We’ve spent quite a long time here with my siblings just exploring the underneath of the sea. Although we’ve seen evident bleaching of the corals, it was still a memorable experience.

For the first time, I got to see coral reefs and colorful fishes lurking among them. This is also where we saw the endangered giant clams.

4. Old Scout Island

Old Scout Island is near the Coral Garden, and its surrounding waters are also ideal for snorkeling. Enjoy strolling on its little beach.

Here, you’ll find a rock formation resembling a human face, giving it quite a horror feature. But don’t worry, it’s one relaxing experience when you visit Old Scout Island.

5. Quezon Island

hundred islands tour

Quezon Island was the most crowded part of Hundred Islands National Park when we visited. It’s no surprise though because it has quite a long stretch of creamy-white beach.

The waters are also shallow and the waves are calmer here. There are three islets composing Quezon Island. It is the ideal spot for a variety of activities such as banana boat and jet-skiing.

It is named as such in recognition of the late Philippine president Manuel L. Quezon.

6. Children’s Island

The Children’s Island also has shallow waters, making it ideal for a family getaway, especially if you have children. That is why it also gets crowded like Quezon Island. If you’re planning for an overnight, they’ve got tents for rent and picnic tables here.

7. Bat Island

hundred islands tour

Although you’re not allowed to step on the island, you can see it when you hop to the other islands. From a distance, you’ll glimpse giant bats hanging on trees.

There are literally millions of them living on this island, making it an important ecological sanctuary. It’s good that tourism activities are prohibited here to ensure that the bats thrive sustainably.

8. Cathedral Island

Tourists are also not allowed to come here, although you can see it when you’re transferring to other islands. From a distance, you can see a huge triangular-shaped crack in the middle of the island.

Inside, there is a grotto with the statue of the Virgin Mary. You can pray if you pass by it.

10. Pilgrimage Island

hundred islands tour

As a devout Catholic, visiting Pilgrimage Island was a surreal experience. It’s a new attraction in the Hundred Islands National Park. Atop it, one finds a tall statue of Jesus Christ, measuring 56 feet high.

It’s a recognizable landmark when hopping from one island to the other. To reach the statue, you’ll pass by several crosses where you can pray at each stage.

If you’re a non-Catholic, though, you can still visit the island to enjoy the lush sceneries and the tranquility of it.

Other islands are slowly being developed for tourism, aside from what we mentioned above. Hopefully, the local authorities do so without causing major impacts to the natural environment.

The islands are critical sanctuaries for countless species at risk of extinction. Therefore, sustainable tourism should be the drive.

During our visit, we only visited 6 of the islands for half a day. We could have visited more since we still have the entire afternoon, but we were already tired, so we opted to go back.

But I tell you, those islands we visited were enough to make me consider our journey to Hundred Islands National Park as one of the best.

Aside from spending the night inside the Hundred Islands National Park, you can choose from the various transients and hotels near Lucap Wharf or within Alaminos City.

Instead of camping, we decided to stay on a transient near Lucap Wharf since we hoped to catch an early bus to Baguio the following morning.

We spentPhp 2000 for the night. I talked with the staff, and she mentioned that other transients also offer similar prices. That’s reasonable enough for me as the room where we stayed had basic amenities, including a shower and beds.

Some transients also have tricycles to bring customers to the Lucap Wharf or even to the bus stations in Alaminos City.

Most transients here don’t have nearby restaurants or stores. So make sure to bring food from Lucap Wharf or Alaminos City.

Tips and Reminders

  • It’s best to go to Hundred Islands in Pangasinan during the early morning.
  • Payment is on a cash basis, so bring a lot of cash.
  • ATM is available at Alaminos town center and Lucap Wharf.
  • To cut on rental expenses, you can bring your snorkeling gears, kitchen utensils, and tents.
  • Always wear a life vest when riding a boat and doing water activities such as snorkeling and swimming.
  • As a means of kindness, invite your boatman during lunch or share meals and snacks with him. As for me, I gave him a tip as a bonus.
  • Purchase your foods and snacks before visiting the Hundred Islands. Items sold there are expensive; some are double their regular prices.
  • Please make use of eco-friendly/organic soaps and lotion. Let us not pollute the ocean.
  • Avoid stepping on coral reefs. That’s one way for you to help in the conservation and restoration efforts.

Hundred Islands National Park

Quick navigation.

Hundred Islands National Park is located in the northern Philippines in the province of Pangasinan. There are 124 pristine coral reef islands scattered across an area of 7.12 square miles (18.44 sq km).

The islands feature a coral reef foundation with the above ground cliffs being comprised of limestone.  Vegetation is plentiful and covers the majority of the islands in full.  Only some of the islands feature beaches and the level of the tide may determine if they are accessible or not.

The majority of wildlife is accounted for by the species below the ocean waters or up in the sky.  Some of the bird species include grey-backed tailorbird, lemon-throated warbler, Philippine Bulbul, Philippine Coucal, Philippine duck, Philippine hawk-cuckoo, and the white-eared brown-dove.

Governor Island and Quezon Island are two of the islands that have been developed for tourism.  Visitors can kayak around the islands or zip line overhead for two different perspectives.  Scuba diving is also offered to explore the pristine waters and the coral reefs around the islands.

An aerial view of the hundred islands is a highlight showing the expanse of these coral reef landscape.  To really enjoy the highlights of these islands you need to engage the different views from above, kayaking around, and snorkeling or scuba-diving below.  It is only three these collective experiences that you can truly appreciate the splendor of this national park.

Things To Do:

The majority of activities are geared at exploring the islands.  Whether out on the water, underneath the water, or walking around the islands, it is about experiencing the different perspectives of the islands.

Scuba Diving

hundred islands tour

Snorkeling is available on Governor's Islands and Quezon Island.  You can also boat out and snorkel around some of the other islands as well.

hundred islands tour

Scuba diving is available on Governor's Islands and Quezon Island.  This is a little more adventurous than snorkeling and allows you to explore beneath the ocean waves a little more intimately.

You can rent kayaks and explore the waters around the islands giving you a unique look of the different islands while also getting in some exercise at the same time.

Hundred Islands National Park Trails

The national park is really not a hiking destination.  However, the four islands developed for tourism do have plenty of places you can walk around to explore the islands.  There is a short hike to the top of Governor Island that features a platform with panoramic views out over the islands.  Some of the other islands have beaches you can walk on which are accessible by boat tours.

Guides & Services

Park protection.

Hundred Islands National Park was created to protect the pristine wilderness found in the coral reef created islands in northern Philippines.  The protection extends to the diversity of wildlife found in the bird and aquatic species that live amongst the islands.  Only four of the islands have been developed for tourism keeping the remaining islands in their natural state.

Fort Indiantown Gap is home to a rare butterfly species. Here's how to see them

hundred islands tour

Tours of the grasslands at Fort Indiantown Gap, home to the only population of the rare Regal Fritillary butterfly in the eastern United States, are set for four days in July.

To catch a glimpse of these rare butterflies, visitors will need a permit to get on a tour, and act fast as well because spots fill up fast.

Here's what to know about the grassland and Regal Fritillary Butterfly tours at Fort Indiantown Gap:

How to get on a tour

In order to go on a tour, a grassland and butterfly tour permit for the specific date and time of the tour is required.

The first part of the two-step process in getting a permit can be done now, registering an account on the Fort Indiantown Gap isportsman website at ftig.isportsman.net/ButterflyTours . Registering an account does not guarantee a permit, rather allows visitors to get one once permits open up.

Those who already have an isportsman account don't have to create an account for following years but do still have to acquire a permit.

All visitors, including children and babies, must be registered and have a permit in order to go on a tour. Parents signing up their child for a tour can use their own email to sign them up. By using their child's date of birth, they're able to sign them up for a youth permit instead of a regular permit.

Youth permits are available for anyone under the age of 13.

Permits will open up on May 28 and will be available after viewing a brief safety video describing the butterfly tours, parking, what visitors should expect and the hazards and risks of being on a military base. Once the video is viewed and acknowledged, available permits will pop up in the account. The permits are free but have to be put in the cart and checked out.

Each person is only allowed one permit per year.

Permits are shown upon arrival at Fort Indiantown Gap and can be printed out or pulled up from a cell phone.

The tours last around an hour will be held on July 4, 5, 6, and 7 with five tours happening each day at 9:30 a.m., 10:15 a.m., 11 a.m., 11:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Virginia Tilden, a wildlife biologist II for the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs explained that each tour has space for 30 people not counting youth permits. Six hundred regular permits are available this year plus youth permits.

Last year, there were 570 permits available because one tour overlapped with military training at Fort Indiantown Gap, making it impossible to hold that tour time. Every permit last year was spoken for, and she expects that all 600 tour spots will be booked this year as well.

"The reason why we don't release permits until end of May, beginning of June, is because they do sell out quite quickly. Last year I want to say they sold out in about two and half weeks," Tilden said.

What will visitors see on the tour? How should they prepare?

Tilden recommended that visitors arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time.

After arrival, visitors will be caravanned together in their own vehicles into the grasslands parking area by a Fort Indiantown Gap staff member where they'll be then directed to park.

Once everyone is parked and out of their vehicles, the tour group will walk along gravel trails and mowed grassland paths, cutting right through a training area. The tour goes through historical and current training ranges, and visitors will be able to see a mosaic of different habitats going through the grasslands.

"It's about an hour long once we start the foot portion of the tour and you have a primary tour guide who's gonna lead the tour of about 30 people. And then we have two secondary tour guides that assist in case you have additional questions or people want to travel straggle behind to take photos or things like that."

"For the most part we try to stay together in the group so that way the next tour that comes through about 45 minutes later, we don't bump into each other."

Tilden recommends that visitors bring their own sunscreen, bug spray, drinking water, appropriate footwear, clothing, hats and sunglasses because the tour is 100% in the sun. She also said that due to the terrain, individuals with mobility issues might want to reconsider taking a tour. All-terrain strollers are able to go through with relative ease, while standard umbrella strollers cannot.

Tours are held rain or shine. Tilden said that they've only had rain on one tour, and despite it were still able to see the butterflies. If there is thunder or lightening, the tour may be postponed or delayed.

The tours take place during the peak flight time of the year for Regal Fritillary Butterflies, meaning that visitors will be able to see more butterflies than any other time of the year.

Tilden said that since insects go through boom/bust population cycles, and that since the last few years they've seen a high population, followed by a slight dip in 2023, they aren't sure whether they'll be seeing a very low population year or if numbers will still be higher. However she did say that they believe the population should somewhere around 1,000, based on previous record keeping.

Those with tour specific questions can reach out through email at [email protected]

Why are Regal Fritillary Butterflies so rare? Why are they at Fort Indiantown Gap?

Tilden explained that Regal Fritillary butterflies, a grassland endemic species, really began to disappear around the 1950s as grasslands began to disappear as urban and agricultural development grew, and forest and tree coverage began to overtake grasslands.

"You don't see a whole lot of grasslands in the northeast. Historically there were grasslands because Native Americans used fire to clear large swaths of land and then rotational agriculture provided these nooks and crannies of meadows and farmland and farrow pastures that the butterfly could hop from location to location."

"Over time, especially with the suppression of fire in the east, we lost so many of these open habitats."

In addition to the 17,000 acres of land itself set aside, free from urban and agricultural development and restrictions on the use of herbicides and pesticides, what made Fort Indiantown Gap so serviceable for these butterflies was the military training, Tilden explained.

Tanks that rolled over the lands and explosives in the impact area, created soil disturbances. Fires that cleared the trees and vegetation, promoting grassland growth and getting rid of invasive species is the biggest reason the butterflies have been able to persist at Fort Indiantown Gap, she said.

Out of the 2,100 acres of grasslands at Fort Indiantown Gap, Tilden said that about 450 of those acres are classified as Regal research areas, where they see the highest densities of the butterfly.

Previously, she explained, the last place in the east to see Royal Fritillaries was another military base in Virginia around 2012-2014, and before that, was in the 1990s along the barrier islands like Martha's Vineyard and Block Island.

While there are still Royal Fritillaries in the west, Tilden said that recently U.S. Fish and Wildlife accepted scientific studies proved that the western and eastern populations are actually two distinct subspecies, making Fort Indiantown Gap the only remaining population of the eastern Regal Fritillary Butterflies.
