New Randy Travis Documentary "More Life" Revealed
Randy Travis is a skilled catfish cook who loves horses and ice cream are a few details people learned about the singer Monday when the music community gathered at the Country Music Hall of Fame to view his new documentary "More Life."
Those personal morsels came before the showing as friends stood around sharing memories.
"More Life" does a deep dive into Travis' life that starts in 2012 with the last footage of him singing his hits, including "Deeper Than the Holler," "Diggin' Up Bones" and "Three Wooden Crosses" before his 2013 debilitating stroke. The movie hopscotches between the past and present to weave the heartbreaking, inspirational story that's become his life.
"What he's achieving right now goes way beyond a career," said Shaun Silva, who produced "More Life." "This is the will and strength of a man to get better."
Viewers meet Travis' longtime producer Kyle Lehning and former Warner Music Nashville A&R executive Martha Sharp who gave him a record deal.
"When we made the first album, neither of us knew we were going to sell 5 million albums," Lehning said. "Forty thousand was my target."
Lehning also shared personal stories. The producer likened him to old western television stars with his quick draw gun skills and recalled how someone tossed a cell phone in the air, and Travis shot a hole in it.
The singer likes pop music less than cell phones. Lehning said when Travis discovered he made the Top 5 on an all-genre music chart, he wanted his song removed. He thought the chart was for pop songs, but when Travis realized it recognized all types of music, he was okay with it.
"Randy Travis would have rather been a traditional country failure than he would have been a success in any other kind of music," Lehning said.
In the documentary, Travis talked about the therapeutic qualities of his ranch and the joy he finds in riding and training horses. Footage is included from the party where Warner Music Nashville gifted him a horse following a chart success.
"If you look at this music business, it starts with a song," Travis said. "You're not going to succeed until you have the caliber of a song that touches people."
The filming process started about a decade ago when Silva began recording footage of Travis for a made-for-tv music special. Recording halted when Travis suffered his stroke. Because Silva was working on the special, he had cataloged hours of performance and interview recordings in the months leading up to the stroke. Travis' last unimpaired moments were captured and shared in "More Life."
The documentary also follows his fight back to health. His wife, Mary Travis, shares that doctors told her to turn off life support. When she asked Travis about it, she said a single tear slid down his face, and he squeezed her hand. She knew he wanted to keep fighting. She also revealed the emotional moment he got back on his horse following his release from the hospital.
"He's stubborn," she said. "I don't know if you know that about him."
In 2021, Travis celebrated 35 years of mainstream success and 35 years as a Grand Ole Opry member. He was named a CMT Artist of a Lifetime and with 16 million likes and 2.5 million followers, country radio dubbed him the country king of TikTok.
"It went from a TV music special to a documentary about the toughest man I've ever met in my life," Silva said. "That's the story."
Distribution for "More Life" will be announced in the coming months.

‘Randy Travis: More Life’ Is A Testament To Country Singer’s Talent And Ongoing Health Struggles
Where to stream:.
- Randy Travis: More Life
So many musicians have died over the past decade it seems like a culling, the impact of each loss amplified through the echo chamber of social media, their causes of death as varied as their backgrounds and ages. Far less spoken about are the debilitating medical conditions that have cut musicians down when they still had more to give, such as country singer Randy Travis, who suffered a catastrophic stroke in 2013 at the age of 54 from which he has yet to fully recover.
The new documentary Randy Travis: More Life started out as a concert film honoring the 25th anniversary of his triple platinum debut album, 1986’s Storms of Life . Filmed in January 2012, director Shaun Silva says they had a locked edit of the original special when they learned of Travis’ illness. Shelved for nearly a decade, it now includes the original performances alongside archival footage and new interviews which tell the story of Travis’ career before and after the event which permanently altered his life. It is currently available to rent, as well as being serialized on the artist’s YouTube channel , with seven episodes premiering every two weeks through July 7.
Country music was at a crossroads in the early 1980s. With countrypolitan crossover pop on one side and Southern rock on the other, what dominated the charts hardly sounded like country anymore. Enter a lanky singer from North Carolina whose lush baritone looked back to legends Lefty Frizzell and Merle Haggard for inspiration. Along with such artists as George Strait and Patty Loveless, Travis was part of country’s neotraditionalist movement which breathed new life into the genre while evoking the glory of its past. Despite their authentic sound, their crossover success kicked down the doors for generations of country artists to come.
Before we hear a note of music we see Travis in 2017, making his first public appearances after years in recovery. This is followed by a slew of news reports about his stroke, a stroke which almost killed him and robbed him of his mobility and voice. Travis should not be pitied, he’s led an amazing life and is surrounded by those who love and care for him, including his wife Mary, but it’s not easy viewing, watching him struggle with the basics of motion and communication.
As we travel back to 2012’s taping, we see the 52-year-old Travis looking dapper in a leather sports coat. It isn’t flashy but it looks expensive. The only signs of age are the gray hairs on the side of his head and his pronouncement that, “I actually don’t feel that much older…’til I look in the mirror.” His band is stripped down and traditional; a telecaster, a pedal steel, a fiddle player, a phalanx of acoustic guitarists and a drummer. The audience sits in a room that looks as comfortable as your grandmother’s parlor, if your grandmother was a wealthy Texan oil heiress.
Travis has a voice that makes it easy to slip into hokey cliches (smooth as Bourbon, smokey like brisket, sweet as pecan pie). Most of all, though, his voice sounds comfortable , broken-in after years of performing, able to put a lyric over with subtle dynamics and phrasing equal to any soul or gospel singer. It’s familiar and soothing and the perfect vehicle for the songs, which speak to everyday experiences, of love and heartbreak, faith and family, life and death.
In between, we learn about Travis’ rise to fame, how he was discovered on stage at the Nashville Palace, where he fried catfish in the kitchen. Travis moved to Nashville at the height of the “Urban Cowboy” craze and his throwback stylings took awhile to find the right audience. After signing his first record contract, he watched his debut album go to the top of the pop charts, unprecedented for a country artist at the time. He says he often felt like a deer in the headlights, unable to process his rapid reversal of fortune after years of struggle.
To show their appreciation for his breakout success, Travis’ record label gave him a horse. The son of a farmer and rancher, we see Travis before his illness on his Texas estate riding horses and discussing the “therapeutic” effect they have on him. He’s also pretty good at quick draw tricks on a couple of pistols he wears on a gun belt. Friends and collaborators describe him as “an old soul” and “a real cowboy,” like someone who walked through a portal from the Wild West.
Travis’ stroke in the summer of 2013 changed everything. He would endure multiple operations, including brain surgery, and be hospitalized for the better part of a year. The road to recovery has been long, hard and continues to this day. More Life is both a testament to Travis’ talent and a grim reminder of the ravages of time and disease. As Travis’s longtime producer Kyle Lehning says, “I really don’t think any of us could have known how special that live performance was actually going to be, that it was the last time we were going to get to hear him sing those songs.”

More Life Tour featuring Randy Travis, James Dupre, and special guest Lee Newton.
“During a 25-year recording career, Travis became known as the epitome of what country music should sound like.”
His career was halted in its tracks when Randy suffered a massive stroke in 2013. His miraculous return was saluted with a tearful standing ovation when Garth Brooks inducted him into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016. In 2019, Randy and writer Ken Abraham documented the dramatic highs and lows of his life in an autobiography titled Forever and Ever, Amen: A Memoir of Music, Faith and Braving the Storms of Life.
Storms of Life is the record that originally made Randy Travis a pivotal figure in the history of country music. Its reissue emphasizes what a landmark it was/is, and its previously unheard performances underscore this artist’s stature as one of the greatest vocalists in the annals of country music. The lost-love ballad The Wall sounds like an overlooked country classic. Stuttering guitar and scampering fiddle accompany Randy’s toe-tapping delivery of Ain’t No Use. His performance on the honky-tonk heartache waltz Carryin’ Fire is a work of sheer brilliance.
Indeed, everything about Storms of Life mark Randy Travis as a monumental, masterful stylist for the ages. Both the artist and this recording are American music treasures.

Randy Travis’ Long Road to Recovery
New documentary details the country singer’s life before and after 2013 stroke.
Alanna Nash,
In 2011, Randy Travis filmed an intimate acoustic concert to mark the 25th anniversary of Storms of Life, the 1986 album that sold 4 million copies and spurred the neo-traditionalist movement in modern country music. No one would have guessed that footage would become “the last live recording we did,” says Kyle Lehning, Travis’ longtime producer.

But in 2013, as the footage was being prepared for release — a release that didn’t happen then — Travis was admitted to a Dallas area hospital with complications of viral cardiomyopathy. He suffered a massive stroke that necessitated brain surgery and robbed him of his ability to play guitar and perform. It also limited his speech. Doctors told his wife, Mary, that he had only a 1 or 2 percent chance of survival.
And yet here we are 11 years later, and a new documentary built upon that footage celebrates the life of the beloved singer, now 63. Randy Travis: More Life couples that concert with the rest of the story — Travis’ multiple touch-and-go medical emergencies, his long rehabilitation (with such techniques as neuro-acupuncture, hyperbaric chamber treatment and stem cell injections), and retirement on his ranch in Tioga, Texas. (You can rent the documentary on streaming platforms, or watch it for free on Travis’ YouTube channel in episodes being released every two weeks through July 7.)

Though the seven-time Grammy winner comprehends everything around him, Travis no longer speaks in complete sentences, and so Mary does the talking for him. (The couple wed in 2015 after Randy’s 2010 divorce from Elizabeth “Lib” Hatcher, who landed his recording contract and spearheaded his career during their 19-year marriage.)
In our interview, Randy nods in agreement, smiles and punctuates the conversation with the occasional word or two. He especially lights up when Mary recounts the outpouring of support from fans since the incident. Country fans are perhaps the most loyal of any genre, and Nashville’s elite performers have always made themselves accessible to their followers, spawning a family bond between artists and fans.

“When we were still in the hospital, my sister-in-law would say, ‘I need to bring you mail,’ ” Mary remembers. “Well, she would bring these big blue storage crates, and they would be full. Then, two or three days later, she’d bring another one and it was full. I read every one of those letters to Randy when we were in the hospital, even though he was in his coma state a lot of times. They gave us strength and encouragement.”
The couple also heard from Garth Brooks , Jamey Johnson and the since-deceased Charlie Daniels, all of whom called to check on Randy and offer support. Several of the Oak Ridge Boys came to the hospital. And Josh Turner, who had grown up emulating the vocals of Travis’ Storms of Life and who sings “T.I.M.E.” with him in the documentary, performed an impromptu concert for Randy in his hospital room as Turner’s wife, Jennifer, took Mary out for some much-needed away time.

“I won’t lie, it was hard,” Turner recalls. “They had taken part of his skull off because his brain had been swelling and the doctors were trying to alleviate that. His head was bandaged and he was in a pretty critical state. I played six songs for him, and he would nod his head and smile and I could tell it took his mind off his situation.”
Turner visited Travis again in the intensive care unit after a critical setback. “He was basically just skin and bones. You could just sense the heaviness in that room because everyone was scared to death they were going to lose him. I cried all the way down the hallway because I thought that would be the last time I saw him. I just knew that he wasn’t going to pull out of it.”
Yet some months later, Turner was playing a show in Texas and Randy and Mary showed up at his bus. “His hair had grown back, he had put on weight, and he looked like the old Randy. I was in shock. He is a tough cat. I think I’ve learned more about him since he got sick than I ever did before.”
In 2020, Turner invited Randy to make a guest appearance on his remake of Travis’ “Forever and Ever, Amen.” In his first recording since his stroke, Travis added an emotional “amen” at the end of the song. But that’s where Travis drew the line. When Turner asked if he wanted to sing more than that, “He looked at me and all he said was, ‘Nope.’ It was a very emphatic ‘nope.’ All he wanted to do was the ‘amen.’ ”
Though Travis may never sing again, there are unreleased tracks likely to get dusted off, as with the 2020 release of “Fool’s Love Affair,” a demo the North Carolina native recorded in 1984 that immediately racked up more than 1 million streams by fans eager for more of the baritone The Paris Review once described as a “deep nasal whine, a mix of range and grog and woebegone.”
“Randy was born to sing real, honest-to-God country music,” says Lehning, his producer. “He has an old soul’s voice, and he’s a direct line from Hank Williams Sr. to Lefty Frizzell to Merle Haggard and George Jones, the great, male, instantly recognizable country singers. He was never as interested in chasing stardom as he was in following authenticity.”
Having sold more than 25 million records, Travis’ legacy is intact. But perhaps it now also includes a hard-won lesson in perseverance. “He has been just a picture of health,” Mary says. “We don’t go to the doctor other than just for our six-month checkups.”
His only medication is to control the seizures that started after the stroke. A physical therapist comes to the house, and the couple stays engaged, seeing friends and going out for dinner and movies. His goal these days is to “stay healthy and stay the course,” Mary adds. “The best therapy is living life.”

Randy Travis Documentary MORE LIFE Sets Premiere Date
The documentary will premiere Thursday, February 10 at 8:30 PM ET on the Circle Network.
Award-winning Circle Network announced TODAY that it is set to premiere "More Life," a documentary on multi-award-winning artist Randy Travis featuring many of his last recorded performances, on Thursday, February 10 at 8:30 PM ET.
Made available to viewers for the first time ever, More Life will air following the season two premiere of "Upstream with Elizabeth Cook," where Elizabeth joins Randy and his wife Mary at their home in Texas for a day of fishing.
In 2011, "More Life" started as an intimate concert special honoring the 25th anniversary of Randy's iconic album Storms of Life. However many didn't know how important this documentary would become. As the film was being finalized in 2013, Randy unexpectedly became ill and suffered a massive stroke, making him unable to perform and severely limiting his speech.
"Though this documentary began as a 25th Anniversary special, it quickly pivoted into a chronicled celebration of life's setups and setbacks, after my massive stroke in 2013. The planned few months of composing, turned into 10 years-Mary and I thank the perseverance and patience of the wonderful team that waited and believed in it until completion...the ones that care and protect the legacy of my music," said Travis.
He continues, "With the colorful life I've lived and four rollercoaster decades in the music and movie industry, there are infinite stories to tell in a finite timeframe. As I watch and listen to the cadence of kind words, special memories, and well-wishes from friends and colleagues, captured in the documentary, I am reminded of the blessed life God has given me. I appreciate those who gave 'More Love' along the way, and the fans that continue to shed 'More Light' along my path. There aren't words that express the gratitude I have for the ones that came along when the day was dim, the future unknown...that gave me 'More Life'." With excitement, Travis closes with this, "Not feeling is final...and, I'm feeling great! Enjoy!"
"More Life" has grown beyond its initial vision and has become a celebration of Randy's legacy. The documentary will also feature a special duet performance with Travis and country artist Josh Turner who appeared on Travis' 25th anniversary album.
Teresa George, VP of Strategic Partnerships at Circle Network, adds "Randy Travis' light has shined brightly over this town ever since he stepped into the music scene. We are honored to have a part in sharing this inspiring story of his courage, kindness and talent with the world."
"Randy Travis is the cornerstone of Warner Music Nashville, and we are both honored and humbled to share 'More Life' with the world," said Shane Tarleton, EVP of Artist Development at Warner Music Nashville. "We've been in production for over a decade on this documentary which shines a light on the passion that still drives one of the most important voices in modern COUNTRY MUSIC history."
Leading into the documentary will be the season two premiere of Circle's original series "Upstream with Elizabeth Cook." For this episode, Elizabeth travels to COUNTRY MUSIC legend Randy Travis' home in Texas where she joined him and his wife Mary to fish. Elizabeth is given a tour of the ranch where longhorn, buffalo, and show horses reside. Elizabeth's love and respect for Randy makes for an incredibly heart-warming show.
"More Life" and "Upstream with Elizabeth Cook" will air Thursday, February 10 beginning at 8 PM ET.
"More Life" is directed and produced by Shaun Silva. Shane Tarleton and Mike Dupree serve as executive producers along with Tacklebox Films.
"Upstream with Elizabeth Cook" is produced by OEG Productions with Martin Fischer as Executive Producer and Kathryn Russ as director/producer.

Randy Travis Paid Lainey Wilson the Ultimate Compliment after Her Emotional Instagram Post
The country music legend called Lainey "Pure Country."
Lainey took to Instagram to share photos of rocking out onstage, wearing her trademark Wrangler bellbottoms , a leather vest, black cowboy hat, and layers of turquoise jewelry. The Louisiana native paired the pictures with these words: "Australia, thank y’all taking me down under with y’all. When I decided to write songs as a little girl, I never thought somebody on the other side of the world would be able to relate to my story. I was just a little redneck from Baskin… man was I wrong?! We are all a lot more alike than you think. We all just wanna feel something. ❤️"
Lainey's fans left messages of support, like "There is nobody, nobody like you. So proud of you girl for sticking to your gut" and "Phenomenal show Lainey. Thank you for sharing your stories and being so inspiring!" Australian singer Melanie Dyer said, "So inspiring to watch you crush it last night! ✨🔥" and Ian Munsick wrote, "Legend."
But the best comment (and highest compliment) came from country music legend Randy Travis, who wrote, "Pure Country."
Randy recently joined Lainey onstage at an Oklahoma concert, and she introduced the country music legend as a "dear friend." She said, "When you have Randy Travis side stage—first of all, that’s a little nerve-wracking. I ain’t going to lie to you. But also, it makes me feel like I can really do this. It makes me feel like I got a place in this industry."
There's no doubting that Lainey has a place in country music, but we love seeing her get the support of the industry's icons.

Randy Travis Thanks Lainey Wilson for the “Honor” of Sharing a Stage with Her
L ainey Wilson surprised fans when she brought Randy Travis out onstage with her during her March 8 show in Thackerville, Oklahoma. While sharing the stage with Travis, Wilson discussed how much he means to her. Earlier this week, Travis shared his gratitude alongside a video of their exchange on social media.
The post’s caption was short but sweet. “It was a pleasure to be invited on stage by Lainey Wilson! Thank you for the honor,” the post read. The video showed Wilson bringing the country legend out and talking about how important he is to her and country music.
How Randy Travis Helped Lainey Wilson Make Country Cool Again
Wilson is at the forefront of a group of people who are working to make traditional country cool again. Nearly forty years ago, Travis was in the same position. When he released his debut album Storms of Life in 1986, he didn’t fit the popular country music world. At the time, many of the biggest artists preferred slick production and were adding pop elements into their music. At the same time, the “Urban Cowboy” movement was in full swing.

Artists like Travis, George Strait, and Alan Jackson didn’t fall in line with the popular sound. Instead, they made traditional-sounding country music. This led to Travis releasing hit after hit. “On the Other Hand” didn’t chart well in its initial 1985 release. However, when he re-released it as the lead single from Storms of Life in 1986 it went to No. 1 on the country chart. “ Diggin’ Up Bones ,” “Forever and Ever Amen” and a stack of other singles topped the charts as well.
Now, Wilson is among a new generation of artists who are taking up the torch of traditional-sounding country music and carrying it to the top of the charts. Without artists like Travis who stuck to their guns and went against the grain, that likely wouldn’t be the case.

Randy Travis & George Jones Performing Country Classics Together Back In 1991 Is Pure Gold
Does it get any better than this?
When it comes to iconic voices in country music, George Jones and Randy Travis have to be near the top of the list.
Not only do they have two of the most distinctive voices in country music history, but between the two powerhouses they have nearly 40 #1 songs, with hits like “He Stopped Loving Her Today” and “Forever and Ever, Amen” being just as well-known today as they were when they were released.
And back in 1991, those two iconic country voices came together and shared the stage on an episode of HBO’s Influences.
The series paired two artists together to sing some songs and share some stories, and when it was George and Randy’s turn, it was pure classic country gold.
The two talked about how much of an influence the other was, with George telling Randy that he was “just about to give up” until Randy came out with “On the Other Hand.” In fact, George said that he liked Randy’s 1986 hit so much that he called the radio station himself to ask them to play it:
“I knew the ole’ boy there and got him to play it several times because I loved the song so much…
That gave me a lot of inspiration to want to try harder and try to make a comeback, try to get on the right track.”
Randy then performed an incredible cover of Possum’s 1974 hit “The Grand Tour” before the duo launched into incredible hits from Roy Acuff, Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, Ernest Tubb, and many more.
Man, they just don’t make ’em like this anymore.

Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes Are Opening a Steakhouse with 'Subtle Nods' to Their Careers — See Inside
The name, 1587 Prime, is a combination of both of their jersey numbers

Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes are teammates on the field — and now, they’re partners in the restaurant industry .
On Thursday, the Kansas City Chiefs star players announced that they are opening a restaurant together, a steakhouse called 1587 Prime. The name is a combination of both of their jersey numbers.
Described as the "ultimate experiential dining destination,” the new business venture will be in the Loews Kansas City Hotel. Global hospitality group, Noble 33 , is partnering with the athletes to bring 1587 Prime to life. It has an opening set for early 2025.
"We're excited to be a part of this journey with Noble 33 to create a one-of-a-kind dining experience, and what better place to start than our very own Kansas City," Kelce said in a statement.
The massive modern steakhouse will take up 10,000 square feet and span two floors. 1587 Prime will house several private dining rooms, a cutting edge chef’s kitchen, and an impressive meat display, all of which will tie in more "hyper-subtle nods" to Mahomes’ and Kelce’s football accolades.

“Travis and I have become frequent visitors of Noble 33 restaurants in other cities so it only made sense to bring something special to our own community in Kansas City,” Mahomes added.
In September, Kelce visited the group's Mēdüzā Mediterrania in New York City. And both Kelce and Mahomes have visited Toca Madera in Las Vegas .
After the pair’s Super Bowl victory in February, they have been enjoying the off season with those they love.
Brittany Mahomes shared photos from the family’s recent tropical vacation. In her Instagram post, which was captioned, “Fam🤍,” Brittany and Patrick posed for romantic snaps together as they kissed while standing in front of an outdoor pool.
Kelce traveled to Singapore earlier this month to support his girlfriend Taylor Swift during her Eras Tour stop.
XS Nightclub at Wynn Las Vegas
On Wednesday's episode of the New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce podcast , he shared more about his getaway.
"I got to see two amazing shows of the Eras tour," Travis shared with his brother, Jason . "The last of the leg that Taylor has until she's back at it here in a couple of months. But yeah outside of that, got to get some lovely Singapore food and just catch the views.”
