etihad museum dubai

Inaugurated on December 2, 2016 by Sheikh Mohammed on the celebrations of the 45th National Day the Etihad museum is run in collaboration between the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Culture & Arts Authority. While the former was incharge of the design, development and construction, the latter is manages the site currently. The Etihad Museum is marked by a UAE flag atop the 123-metre golden pole on Jumeirah Beach Road and is a repository of documentary films, photographs, artefacts, timelines and interactive displays. This panoply of originals concentrates on historic milestones in the years leading up to the unification of the United Arab Emirates and pays homage to the country's seven founding fathers.

Located next to the historic Union House on the Dubai waterfront, the Etihad museum was built to honour the most pivotal moment in UAE’s history - the birth of the country at the Union House. The Union House was the very room where the 7 rulers of the 7 Emirates came together in 1971 to sign the declaration that marked the formation of the United Arab Emirates. Since then, the oval-shaped Union House has undergone restoration and refurbishment, however, the building's exterior including the windows and railings, are all original. Once the idea to build the Etihad Museum origined, in just 17 months, the 25,000 square meter museum was built. Even the logo of the Etihad museum is inspired by the shape of Union House.

etihad museum dubai

Apart from the Union House, the Etihad Museum comprises of 2 other important halves - the Guest Palace and the Visitors Pavilion. The Etihad Museum is situated underground and directly connected to the Guest House through a suite located above ground outside of the museum building.

Designed by Canadian architects Moriyama & Teshima Architects the museum is constructed in the shape of a manuscript, with seven leaning columns representing the pens that signed the declaration of the Constitution in 1971. Although all the furniture restoration was carried out within the UAE, the interiors, including the carpets, curtains and chandeliers were imported from India, Turkey and Germany. Near the flag pole is a body of water designed to match the shape of the original shoreline at the time the union of UAE was conceived. Don't overlook this beautiful creation to witness how UAE looked in the past.

Contrary to popular thought, the name Etihad Museum has nothing to do with the Etihad airlines. Etihad is translates to 'union' in Arabic.

So what is inside the stunning Etihad Museum and what do you get to experience inside it? Here's a brief description of how your visit to the Etihad Museum would go.

As soon as you enter the opulent compound, you shall walk through the reception to reach the main building, its curved architecture creating an embracing circular structure, assured to leave you gaping at it for a few minutes. There are 3 integral parts to the Etihad Museum - The Union House , the Guest House and the Visitor’s Pavilion . All of these parts bring together permanent and temporary exhibitions, a theatre, library, an interactive timeline with maps and videos an educational area and a casual recreational space. The interactive programmes are particularly interesting as it educates visitors on the rights, privileges and responsibilities the constitution bestows upon the people of the UAE.

There are 10 halls in total, each one designed around a different theme - the Founding Fathers, the UAE Interactive Map, the Interactive Timeline Hall, the Showcase, the Canals, the Seeds of Unity, the Change of Union, the Unity of the UAE, the Constitution and the Union Accomplishment.

etihad museum dubai

One of the visitor favourites is the Founding Fathers hall where visitors get a chance to know in depth about each founding father, witness their belonging; all supplemented by interactive screens providing information about their biographies and family trees.

Another integral part of the Etihad Museum is the Guest House, a building of historic important where the founders met before signing the union. This building is said to hold the Late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum Majlis’s private office and dining room with seating for 300 people. From old passports to personal artefacts such as letters, rings, eyeglasses and pocket watches, stamps and and other rare items are on display for the public to add dimensions to the story of UAE.

There is also a snug, yet massive library where one flip through pictorial books, a beautiful garden to amble around and a great cafe serving arabian delicacies with a modern twist like the camel milk ice cream. There is an interesting stamps collection with the Royal Mail map that deserves a visit too. All in all, the Etihad Museum is a great way to learn the region’s history amidst a thoroughly contemporary setting.

The museum is located on Jumeirah Road along Route D94. If you're going in a taxi, ask them to drop you at the Union House. Since this is a fairly new museum, not too many people are aware of it.

  • Follow them on Facebook and Instagram for the latest updates on exhibition and events.
  • As of June 2018, the Etihad Museum has no official website. You can however buy tickets online through Headout.

Local history really hits a chord in this gorgeous museum. Visitors are able to see the exact rooms where the meetings were held, documents signed, and the UAE (as we know it) was brought into formal existence. Photos of the sheikhs and their items and artifacts, give a visitor a personal and intimate view of this great country.

JetMags2014, TripAdvisor, June 2018

The architecture looked interesting in the brochure but beyond that we were not sure what to expect. On arrival, the building is stunning but was very quiet inside. However, we were told that a guided tour was about to start and what a treat! The Emirati guide was excellent and brought to life what could be a fairly dry subject (the union of the seven states that make up the UAE) with his explanation of the site, artefacts, photos, interactive exhibits and related anecdote. After the tour we went back to look at more of the well selected and beautifully presented exhibits. The cafe is EXCELLENT serving high quality local produce. Definitely worth a visit but time it for one of the two guided tours held each day.

Etihad Museum, Dubai: A Complete Guide [2024]

By: Author Rosana

Posted on Last updated: February 17, 2024

Categories Middle East , United Arab Emirates

Planning on visiting the Etihad Museum in Dubai soon? Check out this guide with all the information you need to prepare for your visit and know what to expect .

In the last few years, Dubai and the rest of the United Arab Emirates have been making the headlines more and more often, usually thanks to their larger-than-life projects, astoundingly modern architecture, fantastic exhibitions, and new world records (largest, tallest, greatest something).

Founding Fathers at Etihad Museum, Dubai

But how did all this come to be? Opened in 2017, Dubai’s Etihad Museum recounts the path and milestones leading up to the signing of the agreement that gave birth to the UAE, and how the country has developed through the years.

In my opinion, visiting this museum is one of the best things to do in Dubai to understand its history and culture – and it provides a sweet respite from the heat if you’re spending the summer in Dubai .

In fact, the museum is located on the exact same site where the 7 founding fathers (the rulers of the 7 Arab Emirates) came together to agree on and sign the constitution that would mark the beginning of the UAE as a state . Etihad is the Arabic word for “union”.

Spread over 25,000 sqm, the Etihad Museum impresses not only with its modern, interactive and highly engaging exhibitions but also with its beautiful architecture, deeply intertwined with the history that took place on that same site some decades ago.

Before Visiting the Etihad Museum, Dubai

Opening hours.

At the time of writing, the Etihad Museum is open daily from 10 AM until 8 PM . The last entry is at 7 PM, but try to get there early, at least 2 hours in advance to be able to enjoy it fully.

How to get to the Etihad Museum

The Etihad Museum is located in Jumeirah, at the very start of Jumeirah Beach Road. This is the same place where the UAE was founded in 1971.

Etihad Museum in Dubai

You can get there by metro, bus, or taxi.

▶️ Metro : The closest metro station to the Etihad Museum is Al Jafaliya, on the Dubai Metro red line. This station is 2.8 km from the museum, approximately a 35-minute walk. You can also take bus X28 from outside the metro station, and it will drop you off 350 meters away from the museum. The easiest option, however, is to take a taxi from the metro station.

▶️ Bus : The buses that will drop you off closest to the Etihad Museum are lines 8, C10, X28 (5-minute walk), C9 (7-minute walk), 7, 12, and X13 (10-minute walk).

▶️ Taxi : Taking a taxi is the easiest (albeit the most expensive) way to reach the museum. If you choose this option, ask the driver to drop you off at Union House. The museum is fairly new and not too many people are aware of it. You can also use apps such as Uber and Careem to order a taxi.

Etihad Museum Tickets

There is no shortage of museums in Dubai , and the Etihad Museum is the best option to learn about the recent history of Duba.

However, if you want to go to the very place where the city was born, then you also need to head to Al Shindagha Museum, in the iconic Dubai Creek area (and while you’re there, also make sure to check out Al Seef and the Dubai Gold Souk in Deira).

➤ This cool combo pack will give you tickets for Al Shindagha Museum & Etihad Museum with skip-the-line access not only to the Etihad Museum and its eight pavilions but also to the Al Shindagha Museum. ➥ BOOK IT HERE

What to Expect when Visiting the Etihad Museum

The Etihad Museum chronicles the contemporary story of how the UAE came to be , especially after the discovery of oil in 1950 and the withdrawal of the British in 1968.

Etihad Museum FAQ

Inside the museum, you’ll find pavilions and galleries with permanent exhibitions depicting the story of the country since its independence in 1971, when the constitution was signed. You’ll also find a library, an education center, a temporary exhibition hall, and a restaurant.

The curved white roof of the Etihad Museum was designed by Canadian architects Moriyama and Teshima, and resembles the sheet of paper where the constitution was written and signed in that very location, an agreement that marked the birth of the UAE.

The Etihad Museum is open every day from 10 AM until 8 PM.

You don’t need to book in advance to access, but you can certainly do so. You can get Etihad Museum tickets online and skip the lines when you visit.

At the time of writing, the Etihad Museum ticket price is 25 AED (6.8 USD) for adults and 10 AED (2.7 USD) for students. Entrance is free for children.

Boris Pasternak's museum house

Guided tour of Pasternak's museum housein Peredelkino village

Pasternak’s “important achievement both in contemporary lyrical poetry and in the field of the great Russian epic tradition" was honored with a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958. For many readers outside Russia, Pasternak is known mainly as the author of the touching historical novel Doctor Zhivago written in 1957. The novel as a whole communicates the haphazard, uncertain and chaotic quality of life caused by the Russian Revolution and the heroic case of quiet humanism demonstrated by a single person.

Pasternak’s translations of Georgian poets favored by Joseph Stalin probably saved his life during the purges of the 1930’s. However, the individualistic Pasternak was not suited to the Soviet artistic climate when art was required to have a clear socialism-inspired agenda and so Russian publishers were unwilling to print Pasternak’s novel. In fact, Doctor Zhivago first appeared in Italy in 1957.

Pasternak won his Nobel Prize the following year. Despite Pasternak politely declining his Nobel Prize quoting: “because of the significance given to this award in the society to which I belong”, the award nevertheless spread his fame well beyond Russia. He ended his life in virtual exile in an artist's community in Peredelkino village. His last poems are devoted to love, to freedom and to reconciliation with God.

Pasternak was rehabilitated posthumously in 1987. In 1988, after being banned for three decades, "Doctor Zhivago" was published in the USSR. In 1989 Pasternak's son accepted his father's Nobel medal in Stockholm.

Pastenak loved his house in Peredelkino, the house and surrounding nature featuring in his poetry. The poet considered the cycle of poems "Peredelkino", which he completed in the spring of 1941, to be his best work. The poet spent the first difficult months of the war in Peredelkino; he completed the novel "Doctor Zhivago" here, wrote the Lara poems and translated Shakespeare and Goethe. It was in this house that he learned he was to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature on October 23rd 1958. He died here on May 30 1960.

The house in Peredelkino only acquired the status of a museum in 1990, thirty years after the poet's death and a century after his birth. The museum has fully preserved the environment and atmosphere of the house where Boris Pasternak lived and worked. The director of the museum is Elena Pasternak, grandaughter of Boris Pasternak.
