This popular train trip offers breathtaking scenery as its vintage rail cars weave their way down the mountains on a 20-kilometre journey to the idyllic fjord village of Flåm , with a stop for a photo at the dazzling Kjosfossen waterfall .

Another of the best Norway in a Nutshell tour highlights is the 2-hour fjord cruise from Flåm to Gudvangen. Sailing on an open-deck ferry, you’ll glide between the steep mountainsides of the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord .

Customised fjord tours including Norway in a Nutshell

The Norway in a Nutshell journey can be done in one day, but of course you will want to have extra days in your tour so you can enjoy the vast array of attractions in Oslo and all the historic sites in Bergen . In as little as 4 days you can enjoy an express round-trip from Oslo on the Norway in a Nutshell tour, with an overnight in Bergen, but for the best experience we recommend around 6 days for the classic round-trip , with a night in Flåm added to your itinerary.

Want to book a Norway in a Nutshell tour with some side trips or other customisations? Nordic Visitor specialises in creating bespoke tour packages in Norway , so our local travel experts can easily modify an itinerary to your interests.

For example, we can start your Norway in a Nutshell tour from Bergen instead of Oslo or, with at least 11 days to travel in Norway, we can combine a trip to Geirangerfjord and a Norway in a Nutshell tour in one package for you. Another popular addition we offer is an extended train journey south to Stavanger, with the possibility of a day tour to the famous Pulpit Rock .

Why not add a cruise to your Norway in a Nutshell itinerary and see even more fjords? A Hurtigruten cruise along the west coast from Bergen is a wonderful extension to any train tour package in Norway.

Express norway, july 2023, great way to plan a vacation.

Nordic Visitor is a great way to plan a vacation to Scandinavia. They offer multiple options in each country, then you can customise as you want by adding a day in a city, or adding excursions. They know all the best options to make available and do a thorough job of preparing every leg of your journey. It was great to have a personal driver meet us at the airport to take us to our hotel in Oslo. Saved lots of concern about navigating public transportation in another country.

Mary, United States

Lofoten & the fjords, june 2023, excellent company.

Excellent company to work with! We were able to customise our tour and received detailed information ahead of time so we could make an informed decision about our options. The information packet we recieved ahead of the trip was extremely detailed and included everything we needed to make our trip go smoothly. The hotels were all outstanding as were all the tours and modes of transportation. Nordic Visitor knows the best places and things to do in Norway and saved us hours of planning and researching. We would highly recommend them for your travel!

Norway Road Trip - Classic, July 2023

This was the most amazing opportunity to experience different parts of the country. We experienced "different seasons" with the changing climate throughout the locations travelled. We experienced the different cultures of city vs. country living. We were able to talk with locals and learn about the history of Norway. It was a packed holiday between the driving, tours and exploring, but we felt we got a full immersive opportunity by choosing this package.

Aaron, United States

Best of the norwegian fjords – express, july 2023, the itinerary was perfect.

We booked the Best of Norway Fjords Express Tour. The itinerary was perfect and well-organised. All accommodations were very close to train stations or cruise ports. The transfers involved minimal wait time between bus and train on the same day. The accommodation, transportation and tours would have been very difficult to book on our own. Nordic Visitor did a great job putting everything together.

Paul, Australia

Classic norway at leisure, july 2023, very pleased.

We were very pleased with all the arrangements and information. We were able to follow all the instructions easily.

Diane, United States

Wonders of the norwegian fjords, july 2023, the trip of a lifetime.

This was the trip of a lifetime. Norway is unbelievably beautiful and this trip with Nordic Visitor was amazing! The fjords were spectacular and the Norwegian towns and landscapes were charming. Our small group of 14 (plus the driver and tour guide) was perfect. Our group included people from the USA, Hong Kong and Australia, and all were very friendly and interesting. A perfect tour!

Barry, United States

Well-organised.

From start to finish, well organised. Good communication pre-travel and all reservations on the trip went smoothly.

Anthony, Australia

Classic norway, june 2023, very well-executed.

All organised items were very well-executed and we had no trouble making connections and finding hotels, etc. Nordic Visitor organised accommodation that was very close to transport, where possible, so less chance of us getting lost.

Norwegian fjords tour starts in Oslo

Receding glaciers from the Ice Ages naturally carved out deep, narrow waterways as they slowly retreated below sea level throughout the centuries. In Norway, there are over 1,000 of these glorious waterways, which are known as “ Norwegian fjords “. They lead through breathtakingly beautiful views of blue seas, waterfalls, and magnificent mountains. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to experience these fjords and wonders of nature.

If a trip to the spectacular Norwegian fjords is on your agenda, it’s best to be prepared. A tour with a knowledgeable guide is essential to getting the most out of your trip. After check-in at the hotel in Flam, you’ll explore the delightful Flam village. A small railroad runs through it, with tiny farmhouses dotted along the way. At 4:00 pm, you’ll enjoy a RIB (Rigid-hulled inflatable boat) adventure, where you’ll explore the famous Aurlandsfjord and Naroyfjord. Get a sneak peek at the village of Undredal, where the goats outnumber the residents. Then it’s time to head back for a tasty dinner at the hotel restaurant.

Day 3: Boat trip

 • Breakfast at the hotel
 • Express boat trip (morning or afternoon)

A fulfilling breakfast gets you started for the day. An express boat trip, to be taken either in the morning or afternoon, lets you take in the fabulous sights of this area. Day 4: Welcome to Bergen

 • Boat ride to Bergan

After a satisfying breakfast at the hotel, you’ll take a marvelous boat ride through the fjords to the city of Bergen . Here, you’ll meet with a tour guide before checking in to your Bergen hotel. Oslo and the Oslofjord

FJORDS NORWAY - Oslo and the Oslofjord with the Operahouse, Munch Museum and Barcode

Oslo – one of Lonely Planet’s Top Ten Cities in 2018, the capital in Norway and the city of Edvard Munch´s “The Scream”, has it´s own beautiful fjord. The Oslofjord is not so narrow as the fjords in western Norway. But with it´s many islands and the easy access from the city center, it is a great fjord to experience. Popular things to do are fjord-cruise, guided kayak tours, rib-boat and swimming in the fjord.

The Ekeberg Park is the place where Edvard Munch was inspired to paint the world famous “The Scream” . This is close to Ekebergparken Sculpture Park , and is really a must place to visit when you are in Oslo. You can see many of Edvard Munch`s paintings at the National Museum or the Munch Museum , both museums are brand new and opened in the summer 2022.

Frognerseteren Restaurant is located just a few hundred meters above Holmenkollen Ski Jump. From there, there is a fantastic view over Oslo and the Oslofjord. Have we forgotten to mention anything? Yes, of course. There are a million reasons to Visit Oslo. You should also visit the Kon-Tiki Museum and the Vigeland Sculpture Park. And of course, don´t forget the shopping . Oslo is a “small big city” surrounded by beautiful nature and is really worth a visit. And it is a “hub” to other adventures in Norway.

Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord – What to See and Do

FJORDS NORWAY - The UNESCO Protected Nærøyfjord

Flåm, Aurland and Gudvangen are perfect starting points for experiences in and around the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord, two of the world’s most beautiful and dramatic fjords. On 14 July 2005, the Nærøyfjord together with the Geirangerfjord became part of our common UNESCO’s world heritage .

From Flåm you can take part in a fjord safari or a fjord cruise on the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord. You can take this fjord cruise as a round trip (both ways) or one way combined with bus between Flåm and Gudvangen. See the great view from Stegastein viewpoint , 650 meters above Aurland . Taste the local goat’s cheese in Undredal or in Skjerdal , two villages by the Aurlandsfjord.

Flåm Railway is the train journey from fjord to mountain, perhaps the most beautiful railway in the world. You can combine this train journey with cycling along Rallarvegen which goes from the high mountains via Flåmsdalen Valley to Flåm. Aurlandsdalen Valley is one of Norway’s most popular hikes. The lower part of Aurlandsdalen, which is also the most popular, starts from Østerbø and ends at Vassbygdi in Aurland.

The Flåm Valley is a beautiful adventure. The valley between Myrdal (866.8 masl) and Flåm by the Aurlandsfjord is 18 kilometer long. The valley is narrow and the mountains are steep, and there are waterfalls and rivers wherever you turn around. Flåm Valley is a great place for hiking and biking . Flåm Zipline sends you off at over 100 kilometers per hour, you are just hanging in a thin steel wire high above the valley.

By the Nærøyfjord, we have the small villages of Gudvangen , Bakka, Styvi and Dyrdal. Styvi is the only place without permanent inhabitants during the winter, and is together with Dyrdal without road connection. Gudvangen is one of two ports where the iconic ferry trip along the inner part of the Sognefjord departs and arrives. Visit the Viking village Njardarheimr in Gudvangen and experience the history and culture of the Viking Age.

The Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord are both part of the 204 kilometer long Sognefjord which is located in the northern part of the county of Vestland, in the middle of Western Norway.

A Norwegian evening on the fjord

Join in on a 3 hour cruise on board a traditional wooden sailing ship passing through a maze of green islands on the Oslo fjord! Sit back on board the boat and enjoy the scenery and beautiful islands, whilst savoring the fresh flavor of local shrimps.

Oslo, with its superb location, offers unique opportunities on and around its fjord which stretches almost into the city center. Discover the scenery on a traditional wooden boat, fully restored to its former glory.

Tour description

You’ll sail past numerous islands, including Hovedøya and the Dyna Lighthouse, through narrow inlets and into sheltered bays, so that you can capture the capital on camera from different angles.

The boat passes close to the peninsula of Bygdøy, housing many interesting museums as well as beaches such as Huk Bay. See the Maritime Museum with its veteran sailing ships moored outside, and impressive Fram Museum, housing the polar ship of the same name.

During your cruise, a local Norwegian buffet of shrimps will be offered, and in the bar, there is a wide range of both hot and cold drinks.

Norway Fjord Trekking

The fjord trek/hiking was one of the best travel experiences I’ve ever had! The hikes were epic, a bit challenging but that made them even more rewarding. Our CEO Vadim, was a total pro and expert in explaining all the daily events and made sure we were all taken care of. A real bond formed with our group which made the experience even more memorable. Thanks again! Leo

Northern Norway Explorer Tour

Northern Norway Explorer

I enjoyed the days in Norway. It is a fast paced itinerary but you never get bored at one place. Despite the pace I had quite some hours at each place where we stopped and hiked around. The trip definition matched my expectations. My travel fellows are quite diverse in terms of culture background and age. I think intrepid did a good job to make a satisfying tour for such a diverse group.

Magic of the Fjords - 7 days Tour

Magic of the Fjords - 7 days

Tour was confusing... Was it given by On the Go, Tour Radar, Visions of Scandinavia, or what? We never were given the exact names and addresses of our hotels. Guide was nice but didn't give us anything in writing and didn't notice when some of our group got separated. One family almost couldn't find the last hotel since they got off the boat last and had no idea where to go. Scenery was beautiful however and so were first 2 hotels. The 3rd hotel rooms were dingy, though.

What people love about Norwegian Fjords Tours

Active and rewarding trip.
Just finished our tour. Everything went smoothly and the staff at Tour Radar were quick to respond when I had a question while traveling. The hotel rooms in Oslo and Bergen were a bit small. I would recommend the upgrade but the locations and breakfasts in both were excellent. Our favorite hotel, by far, was the Kivnes in Balestrand. Just beautiful and right on the fiord. Thank you Tour Radar!
This was a bit challenging for me The guide Shane was wonderful

The Norway Guide

Fjords Near Oslo: How To Get From Oslo To The Norwegian Fjords

Norway is well-known for its idyllic fjords that are surrounded by majestic mountains, making quite a dramatic and beautiful landscape. While some people assume that these fjords are all over Norway, the reality is that most of these are found in the western part of Norway. Seeing one of these fjords for yourself when visiting cities like Oslo or Trondheim will require a pretty long trip.

We will be looking closer at the fjords nearest Oslo in the article, and taking a closer look at how you can get to the fjords and how long it takes to get there.

Technically the Oslo fjord is the fjord nearest Oslo, but this is not what most of us think of as a “real” Norwegian fjord. The closest scenic Norwegian fjord to Oslo is Sognefjorden, a four and a half hour drive from Oslo, or Hardangerfjorden, a five hour drive from Oslo.

Stegastein view point

Both Hardangerfjorden and Sognefjorden are considered to be one of the most beautiful fjords in Norway, and both of these are great options if you want to see these beautiful fjords with your own eyes.

Let’s take a closer look at how you can get to Hardangerfjorden and Sognefjorden, and which towns you should stop at.

Table of Contents

How to get to Hardangerfjorden from Oslo

There are several different spots where you get a nice view of Hardangerfjorden that are close to Oslo, and we’ll be looking at two of the best options below.

See Hardangerfjorden at Eidfjord

The shortest trip to Hardangerfjorden would be to travel to Eidfjord . This is where the very end of Hardangerfjorden, so it will be the first time you see the fjord when travelling across the mountain plateau that separates the western and eastern part of Norway.

The total travel time from Oslo to Eidfjord is around 5 hours. You will come across plenty of unique natural sights and attractions along the way , so you will probably want to plan for some stops while crossing the Hardangervidda plateau.

Eidfjord itself is a cozy little town, and you can stay there for a night if you want to go hiking in the surrounding area the next morning.

How to get to Eidfjord by car : To get to Eidfjord, drive Rv7 towards Geilo, then cross Hardangervidda. It will be signs that point towards Bergen and Eidfjord along the way. You pretty much stay on Rv7 the entire trip, so it’s very easy to get there. That said, this is a very scenic route that will take you trough Hallingdal and across Hardangervidda, with a lot of beautiful nature along the way.

How to get to Eidfjord by bus: Eidfjord does not have a direct bus line, so this is not the best place to travel to if you don’t have a rental car. There are other options for seeing the fjords that are much easier to get to from Oslo by bus.

Hardangerbrua

Enjoy Hardangerfjorden at Odda

Another option for seeing Hardangerfjorden is to travel to Odda . The total travel time from Oslo to Odda is around 5 hours and 30 minutes to 6 hours, depending on how fast you drive. The great thing about this small town is that it’s much easier to get here by public transport than to get to Eidfjord, so it’s a great option if you want to ride the bus.

Odda is a great place to go to if you want to see some of the most beautiful places in Norway. It’s the starting point for the Trolltunga hike , and it’s very close to Buarbreen , a glacier arm that is part of Folgefonna . It’s much more popular than Eidfjord, but it’s far from the most beautiful town in Norway.

How to get to Odda by car : Drive on E18 until you get to Drammen, then follow E134 until get to Skare. From there follow road 13 until you get to Odda.

How to get to Odda by bus : Odda is also a stop for buses who travels between Bergen and Oslo, so just jump on one of these buses and depart at Odda to get to the fjords by public transport. One of the companies that sell bus rides between Oslo and Bergen that stops at Odda is Nor-Way buses .

Hardangerfjorden

How to get from Oslo to Sognefjorden

Sognefjorden is another of the major fjords in Norway, and the town closest to Oslo where you can see Sognefjorden is Lærdal . This is a pretty small town that is popular among tourists, and it’s a nice place to stop by to look at the fjords.

I advise anyone who travel to Lærdal by car to also visit Stegastein view point , as seen in the photo at the top of this article. This is only 30 minutes away from Lærdal, and provides one of the best views over Sognefjorden.

How to get to Lærdal by car : To get to Lærdal, follow Rv7 from Oslo until you get to Gol. Now follow the signs towards Lærdal on the road 52. At a certain point you will come to E16, and follow this towards Lærdal. The trip takes about 4 hours and 30 minutes in total.

How to get to Lærdal by bus : There are lots of buses who travel to Lærdal, and both Vy and Nor-Way buses have daily departures from Oslo.

Sognefjorden

From Lærdal, the drive to Sogndal is pretty short (about an hour), and extremely scenic. Sogndal will not only have several inns and a hotel where you can stay, but it’s generally a bigger city with lots of shopping options and places to get a good meal.

Get from Oslo to the fjords by plane

If you want to ride an airplane from Oslo to get to see the fjords, the easiest option is to catch a plane to Sogndal . This is is the very center of the fjord region, and is a great place to go to if you want to experience the Sognefjord.

The plane ride itself is just under one hour, but you might not really save all that much time when you factor in that you have to get from Oslo to Gardermoen , then wait a while on the airport.

That said, if you don’t want to rent a car, but still want to experience the fjords, then flying to Sogndal is a great way to do so.

The other option for flying a plane to see the fjords is to take the plane from Oslo to Bergen , then catch a bus from Bergen to the fjords (which are fairly close by since the fjords start in the area around Bergen). Just travel to Gardermoen, book a ticket to Flesland airport in Bergen, then ride Bybanen from Flesland to Bergen city center , and ride a bus from there.

You have hundreds of different options when it comes to travel to the fjords from Bergen, so feel free to pick any you like. Just find a nice town on Google Maps, then use a bus or train to get to it.

Get from Oslo to the fjords by train

It’s actually very easy to see the fjords from the train, and you will need to book a train ticket to ride Bergensbanen . The first stop where you get to see the fjords are Vossvangen (usually just called Voss in everyday language). From there on towards Bergen, you get to ride along the fjords and have a great view of fjords all the way until you get to Bergen.

The train ride from Oslo to Vossvangen takes around 5 hours and 30 minutes in total, but it’s filled to the brim with pristine Norwegian nature along the way.

7 thoughts on “Fjords Near Oslo: How To Get From Oslo To The Norwegian Fjords”

What hotel to you recommend to stay at near Sognefjord? We will be driving from Oslo in August for 3 nights. Do you recommend a boat trip, if so which one?

It’s a bit difficult to recommend specific hotels since Sognefjorden is huge. I would probably recommend to spend the first night at a hotel in either Lærdal or Kaupanger (f you’re going north) or Flåm (if you want to drive on the south side of the fjord), then drive further towards the west the next morning. Most hotels along the fjord tend to be pretty crowded with tourists in early August, but more spacious later in the month.

I have spent a few nights in hotels in this region, but none of the hotels have really stood out to me. Most are just fine, but nothing spectacular. At the same time, I haven’t really had a bad experience with hotels in this region, so I don’t have any recommendations for hotels to stay away from either. I would just browse a bit to find one that suits your needs.

Best regards Nicklas

Thank you for your very helpful article!

I’m glad you found it useful, Olga!

Thanks for stopping by 🙂

Hi Nicklas! Great article we are so excited to see your country in June 2024! We want to use the public buses and do a half day fjording it (lol) then have late afternoon/evening in Oslo. We only have a day! Is this possible? Thanks!

This is not really possible when using public buses. The buses from Oslo to either Lærdal or Odda leaves rather late in the day, making it very difficult to get back to Oslo again the same day. Keep in mind that the drive is 6 – 7 hours each way! That’s 14 hours of bus travel in a day..

Your only real option is to experience the Oslo fjord. It’s nowhere as magnificent as the fjords of western Norway though. Or rent a car and prepare for the long drive. You can probably manage it if you drive from Oslo at around 5 or 6 AM.

Awesome advice! We just booked and we will be in Norway two days before our cruise ship leaves. However we don’t have the flight schedule yet. Flying into Oslo so now we are thinking about using the train. Probably to the closest town that you suggest. Thank you so much, we can’t wait to see your country 🇳🇴🇳🇴🇳🇴🇳🇴

Waaay too much travel - you will spend half your time in transit.

From Oslo to Bergen do Norway in a Nutshell which includes Flåm, Flåm Railway and a fjord cruise .

All the way to Lofoten just to eat and sleep ? You need to allocate more time. And a car is needed. Fly from Bergen to Harstad/Narvik Evenes airport or fly to Leknes or Svolvær on the islands with a change at Bodø.

Day 2 - mostly airports and travel

Day 3 - Lofoten

Day 4 - mostly airports and travel

Day 5 - bus or scenic drive to Odda?

Day 6 - hike up Trolltunga

Day 7 - hike down Trolltunga

Day 8 - bus or scenic drive to Flåm? - better to bus/drive to Bergen

Day 9 - train to Oslo via Flåm, Norway in a Nutshell.

Day 10 - fly out?

Seems kinda crazy.

And mid season, you are late in planning (and still much to do) , and accommodation etc filling up.

Are you physically fit for this hike? Physical fit people use 8-10 hours on this hike. Those who use much less is super fit.

Have you read more about the sunrise/sunset hike? It includes staying the night in a tent without any facilities like bathroom etc.

The rest of your itinerary is just travelling, no time for enjoyment/ sightseeing. The Lofoten Islands detour is a shame. Lofoten needs 3days or more and a car .

You have to skip stuff or add more days

Norway in summer: 10 great places to explore

norwegian fjord tours from oslo

Summer, with its long, bright nights, is the perfect time to travel around and experience Norway's magnificent nature, dramatic fjords, picturesque cities, and unique cultural experiences.

Most people associate Norway with the northern lights and midnight sun in the north or the fjords in the west. However, you don't need to travel far inland before encountering other amazing experiences. Around Oslo and in Sørlandet, a wonderland of nature and cultural experiences awaits.

Here are my best tips for experiencing the Norwegian summer at its finest, from Kristiansand in the south to Finnmark in the north.

A woman in hiking gear sits on a boulder and gazes at a vast ocean.

Norway in summer

Norway in summer: city breaks and nature.

You can't mention a trip to Norway without talking about Oslo. The capital has undergone a massive facelift in recent years, and a holiday here is the perfect blend of city life and nature. Enjoy floating saunas, modern neighbourhoods, and lots of events and attractions.

Go on a cycling adventure along the Oslofjord or hike in the forested hills of Oslomarka. Explore ski resorts that transform into hiking trails in the summer. Don't forget to experience Oslo's cultural scene too. You can explore Norway's history at the Viking Ship Museum and discover modern art at the Astrup Fearnley Museum.

Just an hour's drive from Oslo, you can visit Hadeland, a new art destination, or explore Kistefos Museum and its unique exhibition building, The Twist .

Docked boats with multicoloured flags affixed to their masts crowded into a harbour surrounded by stunning buildings.

Summer holidays in southern Norway

Where should you spend your summer holiday in Norway? Follow the Norwegians and travel to the southern corner of the country. Sørlandet is known as Norway's holiday paradise, offering lovely beaches, picturesque islands, and lots of sunshine. In the region's capital, Kristiansand, the charm of narrow streets surrounded by whitewashed wooden houses combines with the richness of Norwegian folk traditions in the Setesdalen valley.

Experience the historical atmosphere in the old town of Posebyen. Stroll along cobblestone streets, enjoy local delicacies from the sea in cosy eateries, spend a relaxing day on the beach, or join one of the lively festivals that fills the streets with life and cultural experiences.

For family fun, Kristiansand Zoo is a must, loved by both children and adults.

If you're up for an adventure, take a short drive to Lindesnes Lighthouse, Norway's southernmost point. Or explore the award-winning Michelin-starred restaurant, Under – the world's largest underwater restaurant – in Lindesnes. Remember to book your table well in advance!

City summer breaks, hiking, and water sports in Stavanger

A waterfront scene featuring moored boats alongside buildings adorned in shades of orange.

Stavanger is home to a unique combination of Michelin-starred restaurants, old wooden houses, world-class street art, and a multi-dimensional music scene. The city is the ideal starting point to explore two of Norway's most iconic tourist attractions: Lysefjorden and Preikestolen.

For beach lovers, the coastal area of Jæren is a true paradise with some of the country's best and widest sandy beaches. If you're into surfing or kitesurfing, this is the place to be. Take the trip along the North Sea Road towards Egersund and drive through charming coastal towns like the picturesque Sogndalstrand.

Stavanger's Michelin-starred restaurants invite you on a culinary journey, while the wooden houses and colourful street art bring the city to life. Plan a hike to the impressive Preikestolen and enjoy the panoramic view of Lysefjorden.

Culture and fjords in Bergen

Paved road of old street with a blue door and flower pots

Norway's second-largest city, Bergen, offers everything from historical World Heritage sites and innovative fashion trends to a culinary scene and a progressive music environment. Explore some of Norway's most fascinating museums here, including the impressive art museum KODE.

Get lost in the narrow alleys and streets, and experience the city's beauty from the top of one of the seven mountains surrounding Bergen. The city is also the ideal base for exploring the world-famous Norwegian fjords, such as Sognefjorden to the north, Norway's longest and deepest fjord. Don't forget Hardangerfjorden, home to the iconic Trolltunga, to the south. Do yourself a favour and explore the less-crowded tributaries, which are just as breathtaking as the main fjords.

If you're travelling without a car, it's also a great opportunity to take the train to Flåm and experience one of the world's most beautiful train journeys on the Flåm Railway.

Summer holidays for foodies in Norway

A red cable car traversing a ropeway with incredible views of the sea and the surrounding towns.

In the middle of Norway, the Trøndelag region is bursting with exciting history, culinary culture, and nature experiences. Awarded the title of the European Gastronomy Region in 2022, the region is a dream destination for food enthusiasts.

Try your luck with fishing or bring your bike or skis for an adventure. Walk along the nine pilgrim routes, known as St. Olav's Ways, all leading to the impressive Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. As the capital of the entire region, Trondheim is also known as the Home of Nordic Flavours. Experience culinary masterpieces or enjoy delicious dishes at cosy cafes and restaurants.

Follow the scent of local dishes along the Golden Detour in Innherred and take a journey back in time to the UNESCO-protected mining town of Røros.

Island hopping in Norway

A woman in a red dress stands on the top of a fortress overlooking a cluster of buildings in the distance.

Are you into island hopping? Then park your car in either Brønnøysund and Sandnessjøen or the resorts of Horn and Tjøtta. From here, you can hop on a ferry (with a rented bike) to one of the fantastic island communities along the Helgeland Coast. From Sandnessjøen, for example, you can head out to Dønna and Herøy. Enjoy a stay in a rorbu (seasonal residence for Norwegian fishers), go hiking in the mountains, and explore medieval churches and the dramatic seascape. From the resorts of Horn and Tjøtta, you can head out to the municipality of Vega, comprising over 6,000 islands that have caught UNESCO's attention, earning them World Heritage status.

A bit further north from Sandnessjøen, in Stokkvågen, you can embark on a road trip to many exciting islands, such as the Træna archipelago. On one of the islands, Husøy, a summer music festival is organised every year.

The islands of Husøy and Selvær together have fewer than 500 inhabitants but offer unique natural conditions and interesting experiences, such as a cave in the mountains and beautiful hiking trails. You can also take a speedboat to Husøy from Sandnessjøen or Bodø.

Dramatic nature in Lofoten

view over island of Traena under the midnight sun, Norway

If it's Norway's dramatic nature that entices you, there is no better destination than the Lofoten archipelago. Few places in Norway are as frequently photographed as Lofoten. With its charming rorbuers and impressive mountains, it secures a place on many international travel bucket lists, and perhaps it's already on yours?

It's easy to fall in love with the vibrant Lofoten culture, stretching across six municipalities and 12 cities with plenty to see. Coastal culture and natural conditions make Lofoten an excellent choice year-round. Here, you can spend your days going on nature safaris or mountain hikes, embarking on sea excursions on RIB boats, surfing, or experiencing some traditional Lofoten fishing. If you're travelling with children, visit the impressive Viking Museum in Vestvågøy. If not, horseback riding in the midnight sun might sound more tempting.

For the adventurous, sea kayaking, surfing, snorkelling, and diving might be the way to go after a few days in the mountains. If you want to spend your days surfing, the town of Å – Lofoten's outermost point – is possibly the best choice. The beaches here are referred to as the world's northernmost surf paradise. If climbing sounds exciting, Austvågøy's climbing opportunities in the Lofotveggen are a must – and the view is worth it all.

Climbing, kayaking, and culture in Bodø and Salten

Red wooden houses nestled alongside a river that flows through the steep mountains and spanned by a bridge.

The beautiful city of Bodø is surrounded by sea and mountains, making it a clear favourite for a holiday in Norway. No trip to Bodø is complete without a trip to Keiservarden or one of the nearby mountain areas with fantastic viewpoints. You can also pack a picnic and drive to Mjelle Beach, where you'll be met by white sand and soothing waves. Both here and from Bodø Harbour, you can go on guided kayak tours – and Bodø is generally a great starting point for kayaking. If you're in a more adventurous mood, you can go kayaking along Svartisen with a departure from Meløy outside Bodø.

Bodø is also known for having exciting caves, including Svarthamarhola – Scandinavia's largest cave. Explore the caves and hear the echo of your own voice as you go further and further in. If you prefer climbing, don't miss the chance to try the challenging peaks in Salten – such as Stetind and Hamarøyskaftet. If you're climbing skills aren't up to scratch, but you love heights, the wooden staircase of Fykantrappa in Glomfjord – Europe's best-preserved outdoor wooden staircase – might be a good alternative.

Experience the midnight sun in Finnmark

A rural village with a sheltered harbour next to small islands in a lake.

The northernmost parts of Finnmark enjoy the pleasure of having the midnight sun for the longest time – from mid-May to the end of July . If you're lucky enough to experience the midnight sun, there's not much else that compares to the sight and the exceptional view over the sea.

Go on a fishing trip or sea safari in Honningsvåg and explore the charming fishing village before heading up to the North Cape Plateau. You can also combine the excursion with a stay in Alta. Here, you have ample opportunities to learn about Sami culture, reindeer herding, and Norwegian culture by seeing rock carvings and visiting the Alta Museum. The ultimate experience awaits you at Finnmarksvidda in Inner Finnmark, with the towns of Kautokeino and Karasjok as a starting point.

You can also enjoy the midnight sun in Kirkenes, near the Russian border. This distant northern city had a central position during the German occupation in World War II and was bombed over 300 times in a short period. So, you'll find an interesting piece of history up here and can also explore the Soviet monument, a bomb shelter, and a prisoner camp.

Summer in Norway with children

A family of three in warm clothes sits on a chair, with the man holding the baby on the table.

Tromsø is known worldwide for its magnificent nature. Historically, Tromsø is not an insignificant city either. The city was the capital of free Norway for three weeks while Oslo and southern Norway were occupied. Today, Tromsø is the largest city in Northern Norway and is regularly called the "Paris of the North" and the capital of the Arctic.

Tromsø has an exciting mix of culture and nature, making it a great holiday destination for families, outdoor enthusiasts, and culture lovers alike. You'll find theatres, music, and a variety of festivals, and you're never far from the beautiful mountain landscape or pristine forests. You can also go on fjord trips, whale safaris, bird spotting, sea fishing, or visit a husky farm and a Sami gamme (traditional Sami dwelling).

If you're travelling with children, don't miss the Polaria experience centre in central Tromsø, where you can learn about Arctic sea conditions, and children can observe marine life. The 1960s Arctic Cathedral is also worth a visit. Another good choice is Polar Park, the world's northernmost animal park in Bardu. A city break in Tromsø can also be combined with an excursion to Kvaløya and Sommarøy, which has beautiful sandy beaches and breathtaking views of the sea.

When we think of European travel destinations, we usually think of cities like Paris, Rome, or Madrid. While those cities and their respective countries are stunning, we have decided to share a beautiful place that wouldn’t come to your mind. It’s time to give Norway some love. Fjords, lakes, museums, and a beautiful sky make Oslo a great vacation destination. Did we mention that it is also ranked among the top 15 cities to live in the world by Forbes?

So, if Oslo is your target for the holiday, here are the 12 things to do in Oslo.

If you are coming to Norway, you probably want to see as many Viking-related things as possible, and this one is a must-see! Located on the Bygdoy peninsula, The Viking Museum is famous for three ships: The Oserberg ship, excavated directly from the Tumuls, a large burial mound; the Tune ship, and the Gokstad ship.
Oslo Opera House is an architectural masterpiece located at the harbor. It looks like it rises directly from the water, representing a glacier. Try to take a walk on the roof of the building, as it provides a surreal 360-degree panorama. The interior of the building is surrounded by big windows that give you a spectacular view of the water; in contrast to the water, you have plenty of oak-covered surfaces.
