The Saltstraumen Maelstrom is a natural phenomenon that occurs in the Saltstraumen Strait, located in Norway. It is one of the strongest tidal currents in the world and is famous for its powerful whirlpools and turbulent waters. The maelstrom is caused by the tidal forces from the moon and the sun, as well as the shape and depth of the strait.

The Saltstraumen Strait connects the Saltfjord and the Skjerstadfjord, and it is only about 3 kilometers long. However, its narrow width and varying depths create a unique environment for the tidal currents to form. The tidal range in the strait can reach up to 10 meters, which is significantly higher than in other parts of the world.

The maelstrom occurs when the tide changes and the water rushes in or out of the strait. As the water flows through the narrow passage, it encounters underwater obstacles such as rocks and small islands. These obstacles cause the water to form powerful eddies and whirlpools, creating a mesmerizing display of natural power.

The Saltstraumen Maelstrom is a popular tourist attraction, with hundreds of thousands of visitors coming to witness the spectacle each year. There are several viewpoints and hiking trails along the strait that provide stunning views of the whirlpools and turbulent waters. Boat trips are also available for those who want to get closer to the action.

The maelstrom is not only fascinating to watch, but it also plays an important role in the local ecosystem. The swirling waters create a rich feeding ground for fish, which in turn attract larger marine animals such as seals and seabirds. The strong currents also help to flush out sediments and bring in nutrient-rich waters from the nearby Norwegian Sea, supporting a diverse array of marine life.

Despite its beauty and significance, the Saltstraumen Maelstrom can be dangerous for inexperienced boaters and swimmers. The whirlpools and strong currents can easily capsize small vessels and make it difficult for swimmers to stay afloat. Therefore, it is important to always exercise caution and follow local regulations when venturing out into the strait.

In conclusion, the Saltstraumen Maelstrom is a natural wonder that showcases the power and beauty of our planet's tides. Its swirling waters and powerful whirlpools attract tourists from around the world, while also providing a vital habitat for marine life. Whether you're a nature lover or simply curious about the forces of nature, the Saltstraumen Maelstrom is definitely worth a visit.

9 Reasons to Visit Bodø on Your Trip to Norway

September 16, 2022 by Silvia 17 Comments

I visited Bodø for the first time a few years agao as part of my trip to the Lofoten Islands . I flew into Bodø in the morning, had lunch, and caught the ferry to Lofoten. And on my way back my ferry got in late at night and I flew back to Oslo early the next morning. In other words, I didn’t really see anything of the city during my first trip to Bodø. I guess I just didn’t thing there were so many things to do in Bodø?

But this time around as I was planning two week road trip through Northern Norway I figured why not start off with a couple of days in Bodø? I didn’t know much about the city, but a few of my friends had talked about how cool it is so it seemed worth checking out.

I loved Bodø. Like, I could have happily spent a lot more time there, and I hope to return many times in the future. And if you are thinking about passing through the city – stay a while! I promise it will be well worth your time.

In fact since first writing this article I’ve now returned to Bodø eight times, with plans to go back at least once more this winter. You can read more about visiting Bodø in winter here . And if you’re wondering what to do in Bodø, read on!

And if you’re planning a bigger trip through Norway, I’ve also gathered all my best tips in two 95-page ebooks that cover my top recommendations for places to visit (both on and off the beaten path), the best times of year to visit, how long to visit for, the best accommodation choices, transportation, what to eat, what to pack, and tips for planning a Norway itinerary that you will love. You can  purchase my Norway travel guides here .

Bodo Norway travel guide, include things to do, what to see, where to eat, and where to stay in Bodø, Norway

Bodø is the northern end of the train line

The train line in Norway doesn’t go all the way up north, so if you want to see the Northern Lights or Midnight Sun but want to travel by train, Bodø is the perfect destination!

The first time I visited Bodø I got the overnight train from Oslo to Trondheim , which was my first time staying in a sleeping compartment on a Norwegian train. The sleeper costs 930 kroner on top of the ticket price and fits two people (annoyingly you do have to reserve the entire compartment even if you’re traveling alone). So if you’re traveling with someone else I’d say it’s definitely worth it! It was probably the nicest sleeping compartment I’ve experienced on a train – and I’ve taken a lot of sleepers over the years.

And then in the morning I caught the train from Trondheim to Bodø.

I loved being able to sleep through the Oslo – Trondheim leg, as I’ve taken that train many times, and I found the Trondheim – Bodø leg of the trip much more beautiful. I would say the most beautiful part of the journey is from Mosjøen to Bodø. It’s a long journey – from boarding my bus in Rjukan to arriving in Bodø took just over 23 hours – but I got a much better feel for the country by traveling overland. Plus it’s better for the environment!

The train station and airport are walking distance to the city

This might seem like a small thing, but I  love that both Bodø’s train station and airport are within an easy walk to the city center, so you don’t need to worry about paying for taxis or buses to get to your hotel (if you don’t want to). So convenient!

Bodø’s street art

I kept thinking what a cool vibe Bodø has, and I think that was partly due to the amazing street art scattered around the city center. Most of the art is from UpNorth, which is a traveling art festival that focusing on urban art. In 2016 the festival came to Bodø with international artists decorating the sides of buildings downtown.

You can find a map of the UpNorth murals here , which will also take you on a nice little walking tour of the Bodø city center.

I don’t want to spoil the surprise, so I’ll just show you a few of my favorites:

street art in bodo norway

The northern lights

For the best chance of seeing the northern lights you should visit somewhere above the Arctic Circle, and I always tell people coming to Norway for the northern lights to visit Bodø or above.

Bodø is great for watching the northern lights because it’s surrounded by nature, so you can get away from the city lights really easily (plus it’s small enough that there isn’t too much light pollution anyway).

I’ve also written an in depth ebook covering all aspects of planning your northern lights trip, including the best places in Norway (and the Nordics) to see the northern lights, the best time to see the northern lights, my top northern lights accommodation choices, tour options, how to chase the northern lights (including which apps I use), how to photograph and film the northern lights, what to pack for your trip, and other exciting Arctic activities to try on your trip up North.

If you want to ensure you have the best northern lights trip possible, you can purchase the ebook here .

Bodø has a beautiful harbor

Norway has a lot of beautiful harbors, but I think the one in Bodø’s center is one of my favorites. The harbor is lively throughout the day and its beautiful backdrop of mountains make it particularly picturesque.

You can travel back in time on Kjerringøy

Half an hour outside of Bodø you’ll find Kjerringøy, which with its alpine landscape and white sandy beaches is well worth a visit. Kjerringøy also happens to be home to the Kjerringøy Trading Post, Norway’s best preserved trading post from the 1800s.

I wandered around here and it almost did feel like I had traveled back in time.

Bodø is surrounded by some of Norway’s most beautiful beaches

One of my main complaints with living in Trondheim was that the nature surrounding the city was a little lackluster (I mean, only by Norwegian standards). Bodø certainly doesn’t have that problem. The mountains around Bodø are so much more dramatic than the mountains I’m used to seeing in southern Norway, and even on a cloudy day the beaches look downright tropical.

On my way back from Kjerringøy I stopped at Mjelle beach, which is famous for its reddish sand. The beach itself is just a short walk from the parking lot at Mjelle so it’s super accessible, but it still feels remote – it’s hard to believe it’s only a half hour drive from Bodø’s city center.

Visit Saltstraumen

Just thirty kilometers outside of Bodø you’ll find the world’s largest maelstrom, Saltstraumen. Waters rushing through the 150 meter wide and 3 kilometer long sound connecting Saltfjord and Skjerstadfjord create huge whirlpools up to 10 meters in diameter and 4-5 meters deep. You can check when the whirlpools will be at their strongest here .

saltstraumen bridge bodo norway whirlpool

I had been really excited to see the whirlpools, but I was surprised by how beautiful the area around Saltstraumen is as well. It’s a big fishing area so you’ll see a lot of fishing boats, and the bridge that you peer down on Saltstraumen from is also really beautiful with a dramatic mountain backdrop.

In fact I ended up returning to Saltstraumen at the end of my two week trip to stay at the Saltstraumen Hotel the night before my flight back to Oslo. And the view from the hotel parking lot out over the bridge and whirlpools below was incredible! Definitely check it out if you can.

Cool bars and restaurants

Bodø also has so many great bars and restaurants, so even if the weather is less than ideal when you’re there you can have a great time hanging out inside.

I had dinner at the Hundholmen brewery and gastropub, which has a really lively atmosphere. I had the burger, which was amazing – so amazing in fact that it seemed to be what everyone around me had ordered as well.

I also had a peek inside Dama di, which has a really cool atmosphere. Like, if I lived in Bodø I would totally want to hang out there.

Where to stay in Bodø

I stayed at the Thon Hotel Nordlys right in the city center, which ended up being one of my favorite hotel stays of the entire trip. My room had a view out over the harbor, and the breakfast buffet was incredible. They even had a chocolate fountain! Definitely, definitely try to stay here, if you can.  I’ve actually gone back and stayed here several times again.   Check current rates and availability here

And then before my flight out of Bodø I stayed at the Saltstraumen Hotel, which is a really lovely option if you want to be somewhere quieter, but still with good access to Bodø. The highlight of the hotel was definitely its amazing location right on the water overlooking the Saltstraumen Bridge. Check current rates and availability here

I’m so glad you liked Bodø! It’s just sad that the weather wasn’t better when you were here. It’s really amazing when you see the mountain peaks all around the city clear as day, and of course the midnight sun itself at night. The beaches around here are definitely some of my favorites in Norway too.

Let me know if you ever come back, being a local I have tons of inside information into some really cool and beautiful places to visit around here. 😉

We also spent our last night outside of Bodø, and when we arrived on the ferry from Lofoten I couldn’t believe all the amazing peaks around the city! I just hadn’t seen them before in the clouds, haha. It was just a shame that we didn’t have any time to explore that evening, as we had to wake up at 4 am the next day. But it did give me a little peek at how beautiful the city can be on sunny day! I’ll definitely let you know next time I’m there though – which hopefully won’t be too long from now.

Yes, January is not ideal, to be honest, plenty of “Northern Sunshine “ as they say, with near storm force winds.

I’ve never heard of Bodø before, but it seems so picturesque and worth visiting when exploring Norway. Those murals seem exceptional, Silvia. Is a day trip to Bodø enough to see all the highlights there?

June 22, 2018 at 5:03 pm

Of course you could see more if you spent more time there, but we only had one full day in Bodø and managed to see a lot!

June 22, 2018 at 6:56 am

The mountains behind Saltstraumen bridge are incredible to hike in. And the valley (or however it is written) in beteeen is really Beautiful. Thanks for the nice words

June 22, 2018 at 3:50 pm

Oh I would love to hike there someday!

June 18, 2019 at 10:32 pm

I visited Bodø July 2018 and thoroughly enjoyed the city and the environs. Took the bus to Mjeile Beach and enjoyed a swim in the turquoise water and white sand beach. It looked tropical, but the water was brisk…not bad for above the Arctic Circle, though. The mountain behind Bodø has some nice areas to hike. I hiked from the university to the lake up above for a swim. It was fun to discover cloudberries. I would love to return.

Stumbled across your blog while searching for places to see the aurora borealis 🙂 Love the way you have written about the 7 mistakes people do to see norther lights and am glad i read it now while planning a trip.

Had a question though. As per the internet, Tromso is a great place to see the lights. and based on your blog it is Bodo.

If i want to travel between Dec 23 and 27 which place would you recommend to see the lights? 24th or 25th is a no moon day and was hoping the dark skies would help.

Thank you in advance for your help, Am hooked on to your blog now 🙂

Bodø Travel Guide: Best Things to Do & See

Bodø is one of the liveliest cities in Northern Norway and is famous for being the gateway to the Lofoten Islands , one of the most famous and scenic places in Norway.

Easily accessible by train, plane or car, Bodø is also the northernmost city accessible by train from Oslo , making it a must for road travelers heading to the beautiful regions above the Arctic Circle .

What you will find in this guide to visiting Bodø:

Bodø: Things to Know and Curious Facts

Things to do and places to visit in bodø, best things to do and places to visit around bodø, best restaurants in bodø, how to get to bodø.

Bodø is a town located along the coast of Norway in Nordland County , just north of the Arctic Circle . Locals often call it “the metropolis of the north”, as it is the second largest city in Northern Norway .

Indeed it is a modern and lively city, surrounded by the beautiful unspoiled landscapes of the Salten region. However Bodø, with its 50,000 inhabitants, is far from being a metropolis, but it is a nerve center for transport and tourism to and from Northern Norway.

Bodø overlooks the Norwegian Sea, at the mouth of the Saltfjorden , and is the main gateway to the Lofoten Islands and Northern Norway, as it is an important ferry port and is also the northernmost terminus of Norwegian railways.

Bodø Travel Northern Norway

During the Second World War , the city was mostly destroyed by the German invasion, both by land and by sea, but in the years following the end of the war, it was very quickly rebuilt and expanded. Bodø airport and train station have been added. The city center has been completely rebuilt and in recent years many modern buildings and several interesting museums have sprung up.

But the real attraction of Bodø are the surrounding natural landscapes, the mountains and the wonderful fjord with its many beautiful viewpoints. The area offers many opportunities for hiking, boating, rafting, diving and eagle safaris.

Furthermore, Bodø is definitely a great place to start your visit to the Lofoten Islands . In fact, there are several ferries a day (both car and passenger ferries) that depart from the port of Bodø for Moskenes , in the most famous and scenic archipelago of Norway.

The last train station for those traveling to Northern Norway

Traveling in Norway by train you will find that there are no railways in the lands of Northern Norway, due to the severe climatic conditions of these regions. Then you can travel from Oslo to Trondheim and from there to Bodø via the scenic Nordland Railway .

There is just one exception, Narvik train station, which is further north of Bodø. This station is the terminus of the Arctic Circle Train from Stockholm, which runs along the Iron Ore Line , a legendary railway built to connect the iron mines of Kiruna with the port of Narvik. It is not connected to other Norwegian railway lines.

Bodø Train Station is conveniently located right in the heart of the city center , a stone’s throw from the ferry terminal to the Lofoten Islands . Also located in the same building is the Bodø Hostel & Motel , a great hostel offering single, double and family rooms and which is undoubtedly the best option for those traveling on a budget.

A historical curiosity: the Bodø Affair

Although the Bodø municipality was established in 1838, the city was born in 1816 and already in 1818 it became known for a diplomatic scandal between Sweden-Norway (then a dual monarchy) and the United Kingdom , the so-called “Bodø Affair” , from 1818 to 1821.

It all started with the illegal commercial activities of an English company in the port of Bodø. Norwegian officials in 1818 discovered that this company was smuggling goods, and so they seized a large shipment from it and arrested one of the owners. The foreign ministry, which was run by the Swedes in Stockholm, sided in favor of the British and sentenced the Norwegian state to pay large compensation. This sparked a great distrust between Norwegians and Swedes, and is considered to be one of the most significant episodes that led to the establishment of Norwegian nationalism.

Norsk Luftfartsmuseum – Norwegian Aviation Museum

One of the most famous museums in Bodø is the Norwegian Aviation Museum , located near the airport, along the Olav V Gate road. The museum, which has the shape of an airplane propeller from above, boasts over 10,000 square meters of exhibits dedicated to the history of military and civil aviation.

It exhibits a large collection of aircraft that finely trace the history of aviation, especially Norwegian, up to modern times. You will see old propeller planes, helicopters and tons of warplanes. The exhibition is accompanied by explanatory panels that allow you to discover the details and history of each piece in the collection.

There are also several interesting exhibits with models and multimedia activities, where kids can play and have fun while learning how a plane can fly . The interactive exhibition on in-flight safety is also very interesting.

Don’t miss the flight simulator in the Aviation Adventure , included in the ticket price. You will be able to test yourself in a flight session with the same simulator used by Boeing pilots and, assisted by a professional, you will be able to try to fly an airliner and take off from the (simulated) Bodø runway.

It is advisable to allow at least half a day to visit, because the Norwegian Aviation Museum offers so many activities to do. You can get there by taxi or by bus (Yellow Line 3 towards Vollen, Sentrum, Stordalen). If you have a car, there is a large free parking area for visitors. You could also walk there as it is just 1.5km from the city center. More info on the museum’s official website .

Bodø Cathedral

Bodø Cathedral is located in the city center and dates back to 1956. It was built on the site of the previous church, which was destroyed during the bombings of the Second World War.

In 1946, the two architects Blakstad and Munthe Kaas won the contract for the construction of the new church. The works ended in 1956 and this cathedral was among the first in Norway to have the bell tower detached from the church. The interiors are Nordic in style, rather modest and minimalist, with a large 12-meter-long glass window on the east wall.

Near the church, there is a monument dedicated to the people of Bodø who were victims of the Second World War. On the monument there is an engraving that reads: “Til de fra Bodø som gav sitt liv for Norge under krig og okkupasjon 1940-1945. Ingen nevnt, ingen glemt” , which translates as: “To those from Bodø who gave their lives for Norway during the war and occupation 1940–1945. None named, none forgotten.” .

Bodo Cathedral Interiors

Bodin Kirke

The Bodin Kirke is located about 3km from Bodø town center and is a wonderful little church dating back to 1240, quite off the beaten track, but of remarkable beauty.

This old stone church is much smaller than the modern Bodø Cathedral, but is very dear to the locals. It can accommodate up to 300 people and is dominated by an onion dome, while the interiors are decorated in Baroque style, especially the altar.

The altarpiece dates back to 1670 and the beautiful frescoes date back to the period between the 17th and 18th centuries. The finely decorated chandeliers are from 1760, while the organ is a replica of the original from the 1700s.

Nordland Museum

The Nordland Museum is located right in the city center of Bodø, behind the Cathedral. It is housed in a 1904 building, but the museum is one of the oldest in the region, founded in 1888.

Unfortunately, most of his collection was lost during WWII. During the war years the museum was closed and the building was transformed into the headquarters of the Nasjonal Samling , a Norwegian fascist party active from 1933 to 1945.

The Nordland Museum currently hosts 4 permanent exhibitions (and often some temporary exhibitions as well) on the history and culture of Northern Norway. One of the main themes is the culture of fishing , which has always been the main economic activity in the region. You’ll see exhibits on traditional Lofoten fishing and the stockfish trade, as well as a beautiful reproduction of a rorbu, the traditional local fisherman’s house.

The exhibits on Sami culture are also very interesting, with authentic artifacts from the Tysfjord area, such as traditional drums and huts of the peoples of Lapland.

The museum also houses a section dedicated to the Viking era , with the display of a precious treasure of Anglo-Saxon and Arab medals and coins found in 1919 in Northern Norway. The most precious piece of the collection, found hidden in an ancient watch, is the largest ring brooch currently known from the Viking age.

Also very interesting is the exhibition on the history of the German occupation in Norway , located on the third floor of the museum, which includes the viewing of a documentary film (with English subtitles) on local history from 1816 to 1940.

Bodø Jentofthaugen Bunkermuseum – Luftwaffe communications bunker

One of the most interesting things to do in Bodø is a visit to the Jentofthaugen Bunker Museum , a well-preserved authentic Nazi bunker converted into a museum.

During WWII Bodø was occupied for a long time by German troops, who built several camps and bunkers in the area, some traces of which can still be seen today. The bunker of the Jentofthaugen Bunker Museum dates back to 1943 and was built to house a secret communication station for the German air force , the Luftwaffe . The walls, built to withstand heavy bombing, are almost 3 meters thick, the roof is in reinforced concrete and part of the structure is underground.

The museum is not normally open to the public, but organizes tours by reservation only. You can book the World War II Historic e-Bike Tour to visit the bunker and learn more about Bodø’s past.

Kjerringøy is located 40km north of Bodø and is a great opportunity for a day trip. Kjerringøy is an interesting open-air museum with 15 well-preserved old wooden buildings . Here time seems to have stopped in the 1800s, when the Zahls , a family of local entrepreneurs, transformed Kjerringøy into an important trading center where fishermen from the entire region came to trade stockfish, cod and cod liver oil.

It is also possible to visit the small village with a 20-minute audio guide included in the price of the entrance ticket. You will be able to visit the interiors of these historic houses, admire the luxurious decorated wooden furniture, canopy beds, antique stoves and even visit fascinating period shops.

At the small dock in Kjerringøy you can also take a look at an ancient boat from 1820. To get to Kjerringøy from Bodø the best way is by car, otherwise there are some local buses that leave Bodø twice a day. Between Festvåg and Misten you will have to cross the fjord by ferry.

You might want to stay overnight around Kjerringøy to make the most of the wonderful peace (and exceptional freshly caught fish specialties ) of this area dotted only with tiny, remote fishing villages. The only (but delightful) options in the area are Kjerringøy Bryggehotell and Kjerringøy Rorbusenter . Honestly, it’s worth going there even for just a dinner and an overnight stay.

Mjelle Beach

On the way to Kjerringøy you will pass by Mjelle Beach , a very picturesque cove with a beautiful white beach. This beach is a great place to relax on warm summer days, it is surrounded by cliffs and can be reached with a half-hour walk from the parking lot. The trail is easy and therefore suitable for the whole family.

Svartisen Glacier Norway Bodo

Svartisen Glacier and Glacier Seaplane Flight

Svartisen Glacier is located about 160 km from Bodø and is the second largest glacier in Norway. This impressive glacier covers an area of about 370 square kilometers and has its lowest point at 20 meters above sea level.

Glacier snout can be reached from Svartisen Gård on a long hike that involves approaching by boat from Holandsvik. The boat can be taken from the Svartisen Parking (GPS: 66.72423, 13.67895 ). Plan to stay overnight in the area, as it is quite far from Bodø. A good place to stay nearby is the Svartisen Apartment Hotel , which offers modern and well-equipped apartments.

A great way to visit the Svartisen area is to fly by seaplane over the glacier and Storglomvatnet lake, while also admiring the breathtaking coastal scenery. The seaplane flight allows you to enjoy wonderful views and to discover much more about the glacier and this amazing region of Norway. Flights can be booked online in advance and depart (and return) directly from Bodø Airport.

Saltstraumen Maelstrom vortices

Saltstraumen is a small strait that is located less than 30 km from Bodø and connects the Saltfjorden with Skjerstadfjorden .

This strait, spanned by the scenic Saltstraumbrua road bridge, is famous for having the strongest eddies in the world. In six hours, over 400 million cubic meters of water flow into the 150-meter-wide strait at a speed of over 40 km/h, forming dangerous eddies (according to locals it is possible to observe at least 4 per day) with a diameter up to 10 meters and which can even reach 5 meters deep. It is possible to see them from along the coast or from the Saltstraumbrua bridge.

Lofoten Islands

Most travelers visit Bodø on their way to the Lofoten Islands . Lofoten are undoubtedly the most famous archipelago in Norway, and one of the most scenic places in the world, famous for its breathtaking landscapes, dominated by mountains that plunge into the ocean and picturesque fishing villages.

The best way to visit the Lofoten Islands is undoubtedly by car. That’s why most travelers fly to Bodø (or arrive by train from Oslo), where you can rent a car , and then take a car ferry to Moskenes , a village on the southwestern tip of the Lofoten Islands.

Consider that, especially in summer, car rentals in Bodø are in high demand and prices tend to soar, so it is advisable to book well in advance on a reliable site like Rentalcars or Discovercars , where you can find the best deals.

The Lofoten Islands are crossed by the main road E10 , and countless detours will allow you to discover tiny charming fishing villages and beautiful landscapes. In addition, the islands are one of the most famous places to spot the Northern Lights , which are visible from November to March.

Bodø is very well connected with the Lofoten Islands. From Bodø Airport there are several flights to Svolvær or Leknes that allow you to reach the main islands of Lofoten. There are also flights to some of the smaller islands, such as Røst , or helicopter flights to the Væroy heliport. However, Røst and Værøy are not connected to the rest of the archipelago by any road bridge, so if you want to visit the rest of the islands you will have to take a ferry.

But most travelers arrive at the Lofoten Islands by ferry from Bodø to Moskenes . There are both car ferries to Moskenes (4 hours) and express passenger-only ferries to Svolvær (3.5 hours).

If you want to go to the small islands of Røst and Værøy, there is a ferry from Bodø to Moskenes that makes both stops along the way.

There are also buses from Bodø to Lofoten , but they take much longer. For example, there is a bus a day that goes from Bodø to Lødingen (about 5.5 hours) and from here you have to change and take the one to Svolvær sentrum (2 hours).

Lofoten Islands Norway Bodø

Bryggeri Kaia

Bryggeri Kaia is located near the harbor and is a nice restaurant serving good Norwegian specialties, such as grilled cod, fish soups, shellfish and fish & chips. It has a nice pub-like atmosphere with a wonderful terrace overlooking the harbor.

Larsen Mat & Vinbar

Larsen Mat & Vinbar is located near the harbor in the city center. It is the ideal place if you want to taste different local specialties, as it serves an interesting menu of tapas, mainly fish, with a good selection of wines and beers.

Restaurant Bjørk

Restaurant Bjørk is located in the heart of Bodø and serves several international cuisine (mainly Italian) such as pizza and pasta, but also serves delicious grilled cod with pea cream, poached egg, potato aioli and bacon. The restaurant is modern and pleasant and also has a small terrace.

Many travelers stop in Bodø on their Norwegian coast road trip, perhaps before taking the ferry to the Lofoten Islands . Many others arrive by train or plane. However Bodø is a very compact city, and it is possible to move easily on foot from one place to another, ie between the port and the airport or the station.

Getting to Bodø by Plane

Bodø Airport is located near the city center and offers daily connections to Oslo , Trondheim and Tromsø . There are also less frequent connections to Svolvær , Leknes , Narvik , Harstad and Mo i Rana .

Getting to Bodø by Boat

Bodø Harbor is located near the center, just behind the train station, and offers frequent connections to the Lofoten Islands . There are ferries from Bodø to Moskenes (car and passenger ferry) and ferries to Svolvær (passenger only). Once a day there is also a ferry from Bodø to Moskenes via the smaller islands of Røst and Værøy.

The famous Hurtigruten Coastal Express also calls Bodø port twice a day, once along the northbound route and once along the southbound route.

Getting to Bodø by Bus

Bodø is connected to the main towns in the surrounding area with local buses that leave from near the train station. There are also buses to Narvik (6 hours) or to Fauske (1 hour).

Getting to Bodø by Train

Bodø Train Station is conveniently located within walking distance of the ferry terminal and all major attractions. There are several trains a day to Fauske (40 minutes) and to Trondheim , connected by a night train (10 hours).

To get from Oslo to Bodø by train you will need to take the train from Oslo to Trondheim via Hamar (approximately 7 hours), and from Trondheim you can take the comfortable night train to Bodø.

Nordland Museum

Norwegian aviation museum, hike the historic fykantrappa, explore svartisen glacier, chase the northern lights.

Bodø is the largest city in the Nordland county and the second largest in Northern Norway. However, it's not only the fact that it's a larger town (by Norwegian standards) that attracts large groups of visitors every year. Located just north of the Arctic Circle, Bodø has much to offer all year.

With its 50.000 residents, Bodø is the 12th largest town in Norway. It's seen tremendous growth during the last years, though, and aims to increase the population to 70.000 within 2030.

Since Bodø lies just north of the Arctic Circle, the midnight sun is visible from the 2nd of June until 10th of July. This is a natural phenomenon that attracts large groups of tourists every year. Can you imagine, the sun doesn't set for more than a month (24 hours of sunlight!).

Even though the town is north of the Arctic Circle, there is no true polar night in Bodø. This is because of the atmospheric refraction, which basically means that the border for the polar night is slightly further north of the Arctic Circle than Bodø (you don't need to travel further than to the Lofoten Islands until you have true polar nights). However, the high mountains in the south block the sun so the sun is practically gone from the city between early January to early December.

Now that you know a little about Bodø, let's look at some things you can do during a visit:

No article about Bodø is complete without mentioning  Saltstraumen ; the world's strongest maelstrom. More than 400 million cubic meters of water pass through the 3km long and 150 meters wide strait every 6 hours with speeds up to 20 knots. The unique location has become an eldorado for both fishermen and divers with its abundance of saithe, cod, wolffish, rosefish, and halibut. Coalfish is also a specialty of the area and the largest one documented was 22.7kg, captured on a fishing rod.

saltstraumen bodø

The phenomenon isn't only popular among fishermen and divers. It's become one of the most visited attractions in the Bodø area and there are several tour buses departing daily from the center. It's also possible to take RIB boat tours onto the maelstrom which is a guaranteed unique experience.

If you wish to visit without attending a tour, make sure that you've familiarized yourself with the tides as the current varies greatly. You want to visit when it's at the strongest.

While in the area you should also visit Saltstraumen Museum where you can learn about one of Norway's oldest human settlements (approximately 11,000 years old), Norway's oldest musical instrument, local boats and Viking ships and more.

Bodø Cathedral

The Cathedral of Bodø (Bodø Domkirke in Norwegian) is well worth a quick visit. This unique and beautiful church was built in 1956 after the town's previous church was ruined when the city center was bombed in 1940 during World War II. An architectural competition was held in 1946 which was won by Blakstad & Munthe Kaas. The church became one of the first in Norway to have a detached steeple.

There's also a memorial for those who died in Bodø during World War II. It sais: Til de fra Bodø som gav sitt liv for Norge under krig og okkupasjon 1940–1945. Ingen nevnt, ingen glemt, which translates "To those from Bodø who gave their lives for Norway during the war and occupation 1940–1945. None named, None forgotten."

The Nordland Museum was established in 1888, although the building where the museum now is situated is from 1904. Most of its historic collections were damaged or destroyed after two bombs hit the museum during World War II. It didn't function as a museum during the years of the war either as it housed the National Gathering (National Samling), a fascist party that was active from 1933 to 1945.

Today the museum building has been preserved by the  Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage  and currently holds a total of 4 exhibitions. The exhibitions are quite diverse but they all include local history dating from the Viking era until the mid-1950s.

The Norwegian Aviation Museum is among the most popular museums in Bodø and its vast collection of aircrafts surprises most that visit. It's the national aviation museum in Norway and is the biggest of all aviation museums in Scandinavia. The museum displays Norway's aviation history since the beginning and up until today. The museum is divided into two sections; military and civilian aircraft. Some of the highlights you can see at the museum are civilian aircrafts, military aircrafts and helicopters.

norwegian aviation museum

Even though it's a couple hours drive out of town, hiking Fykantrappa is a unique experience that is highly recommended when visiting the Bodø region. It can also be combined with an overnight stay and excursion at the beautiful Svartisen Glacier.

Fykantrappa is a wooden staircase clinging to the mountainside that was built in 1919 by "Rallare". Rallare were poor people who lived day to day but had a lifestyle where they wandered around without many worries. The staircase was needed to be able to build a hydropower station and it provided temporary work to Rallare who was wandering through and looking to earn some extra money.

The staircase is well maintained and is approximately 1.7 kilometers long with a total of 300 meters altitude and 1129 steps. The views on the way up are spectacular and this will be a hike you'll remember for life.

Only 20 minutes away from Fykantrappa you'll find the magnificent Svartisen Glacier; Norway's second biggest glacier.

The glacier is a total of 370 square kilometers and the lowest point is less than 20 meters above sea level, making it very accessible. There are several tours you can attend from Bodø and you can choose between doing a long day tour or include an overnight stay. The hike from the parking to the glacier takes approximately one hour.

You've got a chance of witnessing the magical Aurora Borealis (northern lights) if you're visiting Bodø somewhere between early September and early April. It's no guarantee that you'll be able to spot the green phenomenon dance in the sky but if you pay attention to the forecast, or sign up for a local tour, the chances might increase. Bodø is a great place to look for the northern lights but there are certain aspects you need to keep in mind to increase the possibility of spotting them. If seeing the northern lights is one of the goals for your travels I highly recommend reading our article How to See the Northern Lights .

In Bodø you can discover the northern lights and the midnight sun

  • Map & transport

Bodø is a coastal town in northern Norway on the outer part of the Bodø peninsula a little north of the Arctic Circle and has 42,102 inhabitants (2020).

Bodø is a modern city nestled between jagged peaks and in winter you can see the beautiful northern lights above the Vestfjord because Bodø is located just north of the Arctic Circle. It has a mild coastal climate because of the Gulf Stream.

The history of Bodø

Bodø is Northern Norway's second-largest after Tromsø and is a quite young town.  It was established as a trading town in connection with the cod fishery at Lofoten, but it was not large herring catches until the end of the 19th century. Also, the production in the Sulitjelma mines and the first coastal steamer service to other Norwegian cities gave the town prosperity.

In May 1940, Bodø was subjected to a German terrorist bombing, like many other towns in Norway, which destroyed most of it.

What to see and do

A half-hour's walk out of the city centre you can visit the old stone church dating back to the 13th century. It has a baroque interior from the 17th and 18th centuries.

As a top attraction in Bodø, we can recommend the home to the Norwegian Aviation Museum. Here you can see Spitfires, a U2 spy plane and a flight simulator and an old traffic control tower.

The Norland museum is a 14 old building beside the fjord, and here is a beautiful hiking area where you can have a perfect walk along the fjord and after your walk, you can enjoy a cup of coffee in a cafe in the Nordland Cultural Centre. Nearby Bodø you can drive to Saltstraumen where the combination of powerful currents and a narrow twice a day creates a vast rush of water and violent "kettles" or whirlpools and is the most powerful maelstrom in the Nordic countries with 370 million cubic metres of water through the sound.

Saltstraumen is a joy to seabirds and anglers.

Discover the midnight sun and the Northern lights

The midnight sun can be seen from 2 June to 10 Juli and is one of the unique experiences in the Nordic countries in the Arctic region.

Food and drink in Bodø

If you wish to try local food you have to taste Møsbrøm flatbread, the king of flatbreads. If you wish to go to bars - there are 2 great bars at the top of two hotels.

  How to get to Bodø

Bodø is one of the country's major airport hubs, with frequent departures to Oslo and southern Norway and also regional flights to destinations all over Northern Norway .

Bodø is also the final station on the Norwegian rail network and Bodo is, therefore, a staging post for summer visitors as it is the end of the Nordland railway line, and here the backpackers continue north to by bus and coastal express or take a ferry over to the Lofoten Islands.

TOP 9 PLACES TO VISIT AROUND BODØ

Are you planning a trip to the Lofoten Islands, and do you have extra time in Bodø? Are you wondering what some  must-see attractions around Bodø  are?

We never used to be big fans of Bodø and always thought of this city with distinctive post-war architecture as a transit destination to and from Lofoten. I guess we just never did any research about what to see around Bodø because after spending more than a week exploring the city’s surroundings, we fell in love with the mountainous landscape and pristine beaches that we kept postponing our departure to Lofoten.

So, for all of you wondering if Bodø is worth visiting, the short answer is yes. There is plenty to see and do within two hours’ driving distance from Bodø to keep you busy for a few days. Here are our suggestions on  what to visit around Bodø.

Just beware that most places on the list are not accessible by public transport, so you need to have a car. If you do not travel by your own vehicle, you can rent a car at Bodø airport from some of the big car rental agencies, or you can rent a car from local people via Getaround.

To help you plan your visit, we also included an interactive map of all the  best places to see around Bodø . Take a look at it at the end of the article!

1. SALTSTRAUMEN

About half an hour’s drive from Bodø, you can admire one of the world’s strongest tidal currents . Every sixth hour, 400 million m3 of water forces its way through the 3 km long and 150 m wide strait at Saltstraumen. The average speed of Saltstraumen is around 7 knots (about 13 km/h), but the maximum speed can go up to 20 knots   (about 37 km/h) .

When the current is at its strongest, it leads to the formation of vortices up to ten meters in diameter and five meters deep at the eye of the vortex. Like all tidal currents, Saltstraumen is strongest just after a new and full moon.

As the tidal water passes the narrow and shallow straight every sixth hour , it pushes rich nutrients up from the deep sea floor. These nutrients fuel an explosion of planktonic plant and animal growth, which gives Saltstraumen a unique underwater biotope and a vast diversity and quantity of marine life.

There are a few ways to experience Saltstraumen Maelstrom. You can look at the whirlpools from the  Saltstraumen Bridge  or while walking along the shores. If you are up to something more thrilling, you can take a guided trip on a RIB boat through the current or dive straight into Saltstraumen on a guided snorkeling or diving tour.

TIP:  Check the web camera and the  schedule of the tides in Saltstraumen .

2. MJELLE BEACH

About a 15-minute drive north of Bodø and surrounded by gorgeous mountains, Mjelle Beach is a popular swimming spot in the summer. There are plenty of other beautiful sandy beaches in the surroundings of Bodø, but Mjelle is unique thanks to its red sands.

Unlike other red sandy beaches whose color is caused by the presence of Iron, Mjelle’s red sand contains Garnet infiltrations. The red part stretches over a portion of better than 2 km, creating an impressive mix of colors. The short hike from the parking lot is easy, and you can visit Mjelle all year round. It is a beautiful spot for watching the midnight sun during the summer.

NOTE:  Average temperatures for July in Bodø sit around 16°C, and the water temperatures are about 11-12°C. Now that’s refreshing, but it shouldn’t stop you from taking a dip in the sea!

3. HOVSUNDET BEACH

When you first see the pictures of the Hovsundet beach with its yellow sands surrounded by turquoise waters, you wouldn’t guess that this beach lies north of the Arctic circle.   The beach has until recently been a hidden gem known only among locals, but lately, it has become a big hit on Instagram.

Despite that, you won’t find much information on how to hike to the beach. The path is not marked , and even though the terrain is not difficult (for an average hiker), finding the right way among the rocks is sometimes challenging.

NOTE:  Beware that the trip takes about 1,5 hours each way and goes through pastures and bird nesting areas.

Be a responsible tourist: keep your dog on a leash, stick to the path as much as possible, and leave no trace.

4. FINNESJURA AND FINNESFJELLET

The rock formations at Finnesjura are unlike anything else we have seen in northern Norway. According to the legend, Finnesjura is a female troll that tried to build a bridge to Grimstad on the other side of the Storvika bay. But, as it usually is in the old tales, she forgot about time and turned into stone.

You will get a beautiful view of the Stokvika bay from the rock pillars at Finnesjura, but we highly recommend you keep hiking until you reach the top of Finnesfjellet at about 500m. From there, you get a magnificent view over the Gildeskål’s mountains , and if the weather is clear, you will admire the whole Lofoten wall.

TIP:  Finnesfjellet is an excellent place to watch the midnight sun, thanks to the open horizon towards the north.

5. brusteinarhola cave .

Caving is a great activity to do on a rainy day. About 1,5 hours drive south of Bodø, in Gildeskål municipality, you will find the stunning Brusteinarhola cave. Unfortunately, you won’t find almost any information about it online regarding its size or history.  It is not even on Google maps , but there is a small sign next to the road, and the cave is visible from there.

Brusteinarhola is sometimes called the Cathedral of Novika because of its mighty size. The cave is not particularly deep, and you can manage without a headlamp, but its size will take your breath away.

TIP:  Inside, there are also ancient cave paintings on the ceiling! And if you look carefully, you will find a funny (and slightly scary) thing in the cave 🙂

6.  LØNNGANGEN HULA  CAVE

Lønngangen is a long and narrow cave in Gildeskål, located just a few kilometers from Brusteinarhola. While Brusteinarhola is a massive open cave with an incredible view, Lønngangen is its exact opposite. You enter the cave through a small entrance and follow a narrow corridor created by water and ice.

Next, you walk for about 200 meters through the mountain, where you can either exit the cave and follow a path back to the entrance or come back the same way through the cave.

The cave is easy to get to, easy to navigate, and fun to explore, even with small kids. Just be sure you take clothes that can get dirty as the cave is sometimes very narrow, and do not forget to bring a good headlamp.

Note:  Never leave marks on the rock, and don’t dig or damage the caves in any other way. Take pictures, nothing else!

7.   langsanden beach  .

Langsanden Beach, located on the northern tip of the Sandhornøya island, is with its 2 kilometers long beachline one of the largest beaches in Norway. Like many other beaches in northern Norway, it is surrounded not only by crystal clear turquoise waters but also by stunning cliffs.

The area is perfect for beach strolls, bathing, midnight sun watching, or camping on the beach. There is a vast parking place and a service building where you can use the toilets and shower for free. Note that there is no power outlet or emptying station here.

TIP:  If a beach walk is not your thing, put hiking shoes on and go for a hike to the mountain ridge from the north side of Sandhornøy. You will get a lovely view of the Gildeskål archipelago and Langsanden beach.

8.   JEKT TRADE MUSEUM

Are you wondering what a “jekt” is? Don’t worry; we didn’t know it either before we visited the new Jekt Trade Museum that opened in June 2019.

A jekt is a big, open cargo vessel with a square sail that roots back to the Viking era boatbuilding traditions. In the Middle Ages, stockfish from Northern Norway was Norway’s primary export. The trade routes from northern fishing villages to Bergen and the rest of Europe were the arteries of the country’s economy.

More than 3000 jekts were built during the jekt primetime, but only one remains nowadays in Northern Norway. The Norwegian Jekt Trade Museum presents the last of the Nordland jekts, Anna Karoline , and tells the story of the stockfish export trade. The exhibition is exciting and designed to go slowly from post to post while walking around the boat Anna Karoline which is the museum’s centerpiece.

9.   AVIATION MUSEUM

Forget the prejudice that museums must be boring. At the Norwegian National Museum of Aviation in Bodø, you will find 10,000 square meters filled with lots to see and do for adults and children. The exhibition combines war history, technology, polar exploration, the role of women in early aviation, and civil aviation then & now into a package that nicely suits a rainy day in Bodø.

The Norwegian Aviation Museum is among the largest aviation museums in Europe , and the collections include more than 40 aircraft and helicopters. You will see some famous planes, including the Spitfire, Starfighter or the spy plane U-2 “The Black Lady.”

TIP:  Do you dream of flying? In the  Newton Flight Academy , you can experience how it feels to fly in a full-motion flight simulator. For the novice captain, you can choose excellent flying conditions, and the instructor will assist you through a simplified checklist before allowing you to take off. The thrill-seekers or more experienced pilots can use the simulator to exercise dangerous situations, like engine failure, emergency landings, etc.

WHERE TO STAY IN AND AROUND BODØ

There are plenty of places to stay in Bodø, with most hotels located within walking distance of the city center and ferry terminals. However, book accommodation in advance, as Bodø is an essential hub for those traveling further to the Lofoten Islands. Especially during the high summer season, the accommodations get fully booked.

The best accommodation for you depends entirely on what you seek to get out of your stay. A downtown hotel or hostel is the best choice for those who want the freedom to explore the city on a whim. However, if you plan to focus mainly on exploring the beautiful surroundings of Bodø, these options might better suit your needs.

Flying a Drone in Tromso Can Get You Deported

Tromsø, the largest city in Northern Norway with 70,000 residents, is renowned for the northern lights, thanks to its position within the auroral oval. With drones becoming increasingly affordable, it’s no surprise that tourists wish to capture aerial footage and photos of their vacation spots. However, drone flying in Tromsø and its immediate vicinity is prohibited due to its close proximity to Tromsø Airport. Moreover, this ban is strictly enforced, and violators face hefty fines, confiscation of their drone, and possible expulsion from the country.

Hiking Ryten in Winter

If you’re eyeing a winter adventure in the Lofoten Islands, hiking Mt. Ryten in winter could be just the ticket. This mountain is an “easily accessible” hike for those looking to experience the beauty of western Lofoten without venturing into the more treacherous terrains.

That said, don’t let the word ‘accessible’ fool you; a winter hike here means you’ll need the right gear, like snowshoes or microspikes, especially before April rolls around. The weather in these parts can switch from sunny to a snowstorm in no time, so always check the forecast and make sure you’re fully prepared.

Things To Do In Bodo Norway

Bodo is at the end of the train line in northern Norway, the railway literally ends at this little metropolis that sits amongst the fjords of Norway’s northwest coast just inside the Arctic Circle.

The city of Bodo is often overlooked as a place to visit and is used more as a pit stops en route to other parts of Norway. It is, after all, one of the two gateways to the Lofoten Islands and the islands of Rost and Vaeroya, which are all worth a visit, but you should consider spending a few days in Bodo too.

There are so many things to do in Bodo Norway that, no matter the season, that you could have no minutes to spare if you wanted to. The city is covered in amazing street art, there are great restaurants, fantastic places to stay, it’s full of great shops, and it hosts many an awesome festival.

We have even covered the stunning coastline, landscapes, and nature surrounding Bodo yet, and they’re all just as jaw-dropping as the rest of Norway, so what’s not to love? Here are the best things to do in Bodo, Norway.

Go See The Worlds Strongest Maelstrom

If you’re wondering what a maelstrom is, it’s pretty much a giant whirlpool of current in the ocean and the largest one in the world, called Saltstraumen, is just a rib safari away from Bodo.

The Saltstraumen is so powerful, sometimes the currents inside it can reach 20 knots. If you don’t know what 20 knots is, if you have ever been what felt quite fast on a boat, that’s 20 knots and this current can pump at that speed – quite incredible to witness!

A rib safari to Saltstraumen lasts just 2 hours. You’re driven to the maelstrom by professional English-speaking guides who can answer all your questions and you get to see the amazing views of the dramatic landscapes from the sea, which is one of the best ways to relate to the sheer size and ruggedness of the wilderness.

Sometimes the Saltstraumen can be in vortexes around 8 meters wide and the sheer power is something that has to be seen to be believed. The rib will take you within a few meters of Saltstraumen, but still at a safe distance, of course. It’s quite something to behold and a ‘must’ thing to do in Bodo.

Visit The Norway Aviation Museum

The Norway Aviation Museum in Bodo is a great thing to do in Bodo if you’re traveling with kids or are into planes and their history. It’s actually Norway’s national aviation museum and it spans a whopping 10km squared, so be careful as you can get lost in there for the day quite easily.

There are impressive exhibitions of the history of aviation, you can walk around some of the most iconic military planes such as a CF-104 Starfighter, Spitfire, Ju 88, and even the famous U-2 spy plane. They also showcase commercial planes that worked in air freight or as passenger planes such as the Twin Otter, Ju 52, and Fokker F.28 Fellowship.

For the kids, and the adults, there is a How Do You Fly workshop where you can actually learn the basics of flying. If that hasn’t kept you entertained, you can stroll over to the Red Arrow Simulator and experience just how it feels to fly around in an RAF Red Arrow during one of their acrobatic displays. It really is off the charts and it feels pretty real, so don’t eat too much beforehand.

The museum is open every day, all year round, and is pretty affordable. Entry costs just 120 NOK per adult, 60 NOK per child, or it’s 330 NOK for the whole family.

Visit The Beautiful Beaches

Just north of Bodo, a little way up the road, you’ll start to stumble on white-sand beaches that look like they should be in the Caribbean instead of so far north in Norway. They are absolutely stunning and a great place to spend the day when the weather is warm.

You can take a refreshing dip in the sea, have a picnic, build a fire, and even camp out for the night on the beaches. Some of the best ones to head to are the beaches of Lopsvika, Storausa, and Mjelle.

Both Lopsvika and Storausa are accessible by car but to get to Mjelle beach you’re going to have to hike in and when you do, it’s worth camping for the night. The beach creates a kind of enclosed pool of azure blue sea which is wonderful to see and to swim around.

Go On A Sea Eagle Safari

Bodo is home to the largest population of sea eagles in the world and if you like birds, there is no other way to see them than by going on a rib safari to find them. These majestic birds have a wingspan of up to over 2.5 meters which makes them incredibly easy to spot.

Sea eagles aren’t the only birds to see either. You’ll also probably see some puffins (my favorite) and eider ducks. Outside of birds, there is, of course, a chance of seeing some sea life too. Whales and dolphins are common in the winter while white dolphins are common in the summer. Seals are also a likely spot.

You’ll hop on a rib similar to the one that would take you to see the maelstrom and the tour lasts around 2-3 hours. The crew is fully licensed, excellent at their job, and incredibly knowledgeable about the area. Plus there is no better way to gaze upon the mountains falling into the sea than from a boat. Going on Sea Eagle Safari is one of the best things to do in Bodo plus you can combine it with a trip to see the Saltstraumen too.

Hunt For The Northern Lights

Being just inside the Arctic Circle, Bodo is a great place to see the northern lights from and it’s far more convenient to get to compared to the other famous viewing spots that are much further north. Of course, you do have to be in Bodo during the winter to search for them, and brave the almost 24-hour darkness – it’s fun and worth it.

You might get lucky and be able to see them yourself by driving outside of town, away from the light pollution, on a clear night and hoping they show up. But, the best way to guarantee seeing the northern lights is by booking a tour .

The guides who run the northern lights tours are trained Aurora Borealis hunters and they can predict where and when the lights are going to show up based on the weather conditions. You’ll hop on board a minibus at around 8 pm, and search for the Northern lights and be back in Bodo at around 11 pm/12 am.

On the way, you can ask your guides any questions you have and they’ll explain just how the lights form and dance across the night sky. During the journey, you’ll be served tea, coffee, and snacks to keep you warm. Be sure to dress for the occasion – warm clothes with hats, scars, gloves – anything you have to block the cold out is a must.

Gaze Upon The Midnight Sun

During the summer, the region of Bodo experiences 24-hour daylight and this is when you’ll have a chance to see the Midnight Sun. Luckily, it’s not like the northern lights in such a way that you don’t need to hunt for it, it’s very predictable and you can see it every day if you want to.

The Midnight Sun describes the time of day in Arctic Circle when the sun attempts to set but instead of fully setting, simply rises again. This gives you sunrise and sunset all in one sitting and all the amazing colors in the sky that go with it. If you love sunset and/or sunrise, then the Midnight Sun will be a thing to do in Bodo during the summer on a daily basis.

To see the Midnight Sun you just need to be looking out west over the sea at the right time which is usually around midnight, depending on the day. Hiking up a hill or sitting on a beach are my favorite places to watch it from.

Go Sea Kayaking

This is no more of an intimate way to spend time on the ocean than under your own steam while paddling a kayak , and Bodo is a spectacular place to do it. The area is well protected from wind and high seas, so you’re usually paddling around in calm waters that are so clear so you can see 20 meters down quite easily.

Just a short paddle from Bodo harbor you’ll find the islands of Store Hjartoya, Litle Hjartoya, and Eholmen, and the best way to see them is from a kayak. You can find hidden coves, pull up on beaches that you can only get to by kayak or boat, and try your luck at spotting some of the famous sealife and birdlife yourself.

The best place to paddle to is the southern side of Store Hjartoya and luckily it’s one of the shortest paddles too. The area is stunning, full of coves, peninsulas, and white-sand beaches for you to explore in your Kayak.

Enjoy Some Of The Amazing Food

You might be surprised to hear that Bodo has got come Michelin level cuisine and visiting some of the incredible restaurants on offer is a thing you must do in Bodo.

If you don’t mind spending a few kroner then head on over to LystPå . This restaurant has a laidback atmosphere without much pretentiousness that usually comes with pricey restaurants and amazing food. Their traditional dishes are off the charts such as the Stockfish, but to be honest, everything will probably blow your mind.

They also have an amazing cheese collection on offer, some of the best in the world, and their wine list is nothing to be wary of, with over 150 different labels, they will be able to cater to your tastes.

If you’re looking for somewhere a little more down-to-earth to eat in Bodo then head to Hundholmen . Hundholmen is a pub, a microbrewery, and a great restaurant all in one but what is going to really keep you there is the location and the vibe.

This is where all the locals hang out and it has such friendly energy to it you’ll never want to leave. If you’re a beer fan, you’re in luck, there are loads to try plus they have more grapa than anywhere in Norway. The food is also excellent and is homey pub food such as burgers, steaks, and deliciously local options like fish soup.

If this wasn’t enough, it’s also right on the harbor in Bodo overlooking the sea. If you’re there in the summer, it’s a great place to watch the Midnight Sun from.

Explore The Many Hiking Trails

If you’re into hiking then you will love Bodo. The town is surrounded by mountains and so many of them are accessible from hikes staring in the city . If you’re only going to do one hike while you’re in Bodo then make sure you climb up Mount Rønvikfjellet at the northern end of the city.

The hike up Mount Rønvikfjellet isn’t very strenuous, you can do it in just a few hours and the rewards are very much worth it. The view from the top looks straight out over the city of Bodo and into the ocean. You can see all the islands off the coast, and behind you are views of the stunning mountains of the area.

You can do this hike in both winter and summer and it’s a fantastic spot to see the Midnight Sun from and to try your luck at seeing the Northern Light without a guide.

There Is More To Do In Bodo

As you can see, Bodo has pretty much everything that Norway has to offer, and some. Plus there are so many things to do in Bodo that we have only really just scratched the surface with the above. If you’re thinking of a trip to Norway , then make sure you stop off in Bodo for a few days.
