Isole Tremiti: Planning a trip to Italy’s Spectacular Tremiti Islands

The Isole Tremiti are a natural island paradise in the Adriatic sea. Crystal clear waters and rocky beaches make this Puglian archipelago a not-to-be-missed destination when planning your Puglia itinerary.

In this guide, discover the best things to do in the Tremiti Islands, how to get there, and on which islands to stay overnight if you decide to visit for longer than a day.

Isole Tremiti: A Guide to Visiting the Tremiti Islands in Puglia, Italy

Isole Tremiti San Domino Puglia Italy

The Isole Tremiti are the perfect travel destination for anyone who loves relaxing by the clear waters of the turquoise sea and lovers of nature who enjoy snorkeling and walking in pine forests. It’s truly one of the best places in Puglia to visit .

The little islands of the archipelago are sparsely traveled, which makes them a real hidden gem in Italy! The only busy months are July and August, the peak of the summer season. This makes the shoulder season months, in particular, June and September an even better time to visit. The weather is still beautiful, with cheaper hotel rates and fewer people.

Legend says that the Tremiti Islands were created by the Greek hero Diomedes by throwing into the sea three big rocks brought from Troy after the war, which is why they are also known as Isole Diomedee, or Diomedes’s Islands.

Where are the Isole Tremiti?

The Isole Tremiti are located about 12 1/2 miles off of the coast of the Gargano Peninsula , the “spur” of Italy’s boot. For reference, the Gargano is roughly 2 hours north of Bari and 3 1/2 hours north of places like Lecce and Gallipoli in Puglia’s Salento area.

The Tremiti Islands are a group of five small islands, their total area is less than 2 square miles! They are part of the Gargano National Park as its marine nature reserve.

If you decide to visit the Isole Tremiti, the first thing is to choose the island. San Domino is the biggest and the most popular, while the island of San Nicola is the historical center and where most of the islands’ locals live. These two main islands are the only ones that are inhabited and where you can stay overnight.

The other three islands are smaller and wilder: Capraia, an authentic paradise for those who love snorkeling and scuba diving; Cretaccio, a small rocky island with swimming off its shores; and Pianosa, which cannot be visited because it’s a protected marine reserve.

How to Get to the Isole Tremiti

Isole Tremiti Puglia Italy

Traghetti (ferries) to the Isole Tremiti are the most common way to go or you can also take the aliscafo (hydrofoil). The choice of ferry services varies depending on your budget, how much time you want to spend on the Tremiti Islands… and if you suffer from seasickness!

The aliscafo is faster and more expensive, while the traghetto is slower and cheaper.

Another element you need to consider is the departure port. It is possible to arrive at the Isole Tremiti from the Gargano Promontory area.

The traghetto from Vieste to the Tremiti Islands is on average two and a half hours. While it’s just two hours from Peschici and one hour and 30 minutes from Rodi Garganico.

The price is around 15 euros per adult roundtrip. The major downside to taking the traghetto for a day trip is that you will have less time to spend on the beautiful Tremiti Islands because the last ferry sets sail at around 4:30 pm.

The sea routes between the Gargano and the Isole Tremiti are open only during the summer season, typically from June to September.

A great alternative is to reach the Isole Tremiti from the town of Termoli, in the Molise region. In this case, the traghetto from Termoli to the Tremiti Islands is more frequent and runs all year round.

Another very special way to get to the Tremiti Islands is by helicopter! Flying from the city of Foggia (Puglia), it will take only 20 minutes before landing at the heliport of San Domino.

For a day trip to the islands, the helicopter gives you the most time on the islands to explore and enjoy. So if you want to give yourself a little treat, all while maximizing your time, this is the way to go!

Whichever way you choose to reach the Tremiti Islands, you’ll need to keep your rental car parked on the mainland. No cars are allowed on the islands.

Things to do on San Domino Island

San Domino Isole Tremiti Puglia Italy

Being the biggest among the islands of the Isole Tremiti, San Domino offers most of the services, including hotels, bars, and restaurants. However, it is a natural paradise as well, where the lush green of the vegetation meets the crystal blue of the water.

The island is covered by a pine forest composed almost exclusively of Aleppo pines. One of the first things you will notice arriving on the island is the fresh scent of the trees.

The breathtaking landscape offers a seemingly endless number of bays and coves to discover, which you can reach by boat. If you like to scuba dive, there are underwater caves and even a shipwreck to explore.

One of the most picturesque coves is the Grotta del Bue Marino , so-called because of the rare presence of monk seals, animals almost completely extinct in the Mediterranean sea.

This cave is special for another reason: its position and structure cause a light phenomenon that dyes the cave’s walls with the same intense blue as the water. My tip: visit the cave early in the morning or during sunset to experience the brightest spectacle of colors!

Another spectacular cove is the Grotta delle Viole .

Its name comes from the violets that sprout on the rocky slope and from an intense purple color from the algae that cover the submerged walls of the cave. The incredible contrast between the purple, the blue of the water, and the white of the stone make this cove a must-see!

The Grotta delle Rondinelle can be reached by boat or on foot and is a great spot to swim and snorkel.

If you want to sun-bath and relax, there are plenty of bays on San Domino. They are all rocky and accessible by boat, except for one: Cala delle Arene .

It may not be as Insta-famous as Lama Monachile in Polignano , but with its shallow and sandy beach, as well as its central position, it is perfect for families with kids.

Some coves like the Cala Matano have chairs and umbrellas for rent.

Things to do on San Nicola Island

Abbey of Santa Maria a Mare Tremiti Puglia Italy

The Isole Tremiti offers wonderful nature as well as historical sites. San Nicola is the best island to immerse yourself in culture.

One of the most dramatic buildings is the Abbey of Santa Maria a Mare , which rises majestically on the coast of the San Nicola Island, dominating the sea, as well as further inland. From the Abbey, you will enjoy the most amazing view that the Tremiti Islands have to offer!

Legend tells that a hermit monk arrived at the island’s shore and dreamed of the Virgin Mary, who told him where to build the Abbey. Excavating the spot shown, the monk found a treasure that paid for the construction.

The Abbey of Santa Maria a Mare was founded by the Benedictine monks in 1045. It served as a refuge against the Turkish invasions of 1567 and against the English fleets in the Napoleonic period.

The inside of the Abbey is well worth a visit! Here you can admire a Cross and a Wooden Statue of Mary with the Child and a precious mosaic floor recently restored, everything in Byzantine style.

Besides the Abbey, the Castle of Badiali is another symbolic place on the island. Surrounded by walls overlooking the sea, the castle of Badiali was built by Charles of Anjou to protect the sanctuary from enemies’ attacks.

On San Nicola Island you’ll find the tomb of the Hellenic hero Diomedes . The tomb is not easy to locate, so you’ll have to explore every corner of the island until you find the legendary burial site!

Things to do on Capraia Island

Capraia Island Isole Tremiti Puglia Italy

A boat excursion of the archipelago is something you should consider when visiting the gorgeous Tremiti Islands.

There are different options (in terms of hours, price, and services offered on board), but a boat tour will give you the chance to visit the surroundings of the three uninhabited islands: Capraia, Cretaccio, and Pianosa.

In particular, Capraia hides a special gem underwater: the nearly 10-foot tall statue of Padre Pio, made by the sculptor Mimmo Norcia as a sign of devotion to the Saint.

The submerged statue is a real wonder that you can admire in all its splendor by scuba diving or snorkeling. However, if you are less adventurous, it’s usually possible to catch sight of the statue from above the water as well.

Also with a boat, you’ll be able to see and explore some of the island’s coves, like Cala Sorrentino and Cala dei Turchi .

What to eat in the Tremiti Islands

The dishes of the Tremiti islands are typically Mediterranean and combine ingredients from the sea and the mainland. The typical dishes of these islands tell of a past of poverty when few resources and very simple ingredients (such as stale bread) were available.

If you want to try something traditional, I would suggest the “pesce fe’jute”, which is translated as “fish escaped”, a vegetable soup and stale bread, without – you guessed – seafood in it.

The most famous desserts are the Treccine, small breadsticks made with anise, white wine, and extra virgin olive oil and soaked in Vermiglio, the red wine typical of the Tremiti Islands.

Isole Tremiti Hotels

You will find great facilities, hotels, and tourist resorts only on the 2 inhabited islands of San Domino and San Nicola. Sleeping in the Tremiti islands is undoubtedly a great opportunity to know these islands more in-depth.

And no matter which of the 2 islands you stay on, it’s just a short distance between them. You can easily take a water taxi to reach the other island.

Hotel Kyrie is located on San Domino island, only a few minutes’ walk to the gorgeous Cala delle Arene and Cala Tramontana, as well as less than half a mile away from the ferries to Termoli. The hotel offers a pool, a fitness center, and a restaurant.

B&B La Casa di Gino is situated on San Nicola. It has seven rooms equipped with en suite bathrooms and all the necessities. The gem of this B&B is the panoramic solarium where you can have breakfast surrounded by the view of the sea.

If you are planning a trip to Puglia, at least a day trip to the Isole Tremiti should be part of your itinerary. These idyllic islands in the Adriatic Sea will make your Italy vacation unforgettable!

The Tremiti Islands always struck me as a bit of a mystery .

None of my friends around Puglia , except the ones from Gargano , have ever been there , even though they all agree it sounds amazing.

And here’s the thing—if these islands are that awesome, why haven’t they made it into the Puglia’s popular travel circuits ? I mean, I don’t have the answer, but honestly, I’m not too bothered by it.

It’s actually kind of nice having this slice of paradise pretty much to ourselves ! 🤩

This is good news for you , too! This place is magical, peaceful and incredibly beautiful. Let’s enjoy it before everyone else figures it out!

Explore the Unspoiled Beauty of Italy’s Secret Archipelago

The Tremiti Islands , found in the Adriatic Sea north of the Gargano Peninsula , are a beautiful and unique archipelago part of the Gargano National Park in Italy’s Apulia region. An easy trip from Vieste or Peschici.

This group of islands is a mix of unique characters and fascinating stories:

  • San Domino  takes the lead as the most tourist-friendly island, featuring the rare sandy beaches of the Tremiti Archipelago. It’s also a haven of lush greenery and offers some of the best scenic walking paths around.
  • San Nicola where history takes center stage with an ancient monastery. It’s also where many who work in the islands’ tourism industry have set up shop, adding a lively community feel to the historic backdrop.
  • Capraia , close to San Nicola , is deserted now, with its rough landscapes.
  • Cretaccio is an uninhabited island very close to San Domino and San Nicola .
  • Pianosa is the smallest and furthest out, occasionally disappearing under the waves during fierce storms.

Why Visit Tremiti Islands?

The answer’s pretty clear: they’re a natural paradise at its absolute best!

Here you’ll find stunning coastal views, inviting swimming spots, and some of the best snorkeling and diving areas around. But that’s not all—there are plenty more surprises waiting for you!

Natural Beauty

The islands are surrounded by crystal-clear waters, a true paradise for snorkelers and marine life enthusiasts, who will absolutely love diving into the diversity of sea creatures and coral formations.

The rugged coastline, with its dramatic cliffs and secluded coves, adds to the islands’ wild charm and offers stunning views at every turn .

For those of you into hiking , the islands are packed with trails of every kind . You can wander through pine forests, tackle some hills, and get those awesome ocean views that’ll make you stop and stare. Whether you’re up for an easy stroll or a bit of a challenge, there’s a path for you !

Plus, there are spots along the way where you can kick back and snack with a view.

Historical Significance

Diomedee and the trojan war.

The legend of Diomedes and the Tremiti Islands is deeply rooted in Greek mythology and local folklore. According to the myth, the hero Diomedes, who fought in the Trojan War, was involved in the creation of the islands .

After the war, Diomedes left his homeland. Discovering a conspiracy against him, he wandered the sea and eventually settled on the coast of Gargano .

He married the daughter of King Daunos and created a new life for himself in this region. Legend even says the islands themselves were made by Diomedes , using stones.

After his death, the goddess Venus transformed his companions into these birds called diomedee, or albatrosses. Now they soar above the islands forever, keeping watch over Diomedes’ final resting place.

Subscribe and join me on my journey!

Alessio Giannone , also known as Pinuccio , tells the story beautifully . You also get to enjoy the scenery , making it a must-watch for any Tremiti Islands fan.

If you’re worried about understanding it, don’t be. There are English subtitles available—thank goodness, because even I get tripped up by some of the local dialect! 😂

Julia the Younger

Much more recently, the islands served as the place of exile for Julia the Younger , no less than the granddaughter of Emperor Augustus . She was sent here around 8 AD until her death, 20 years later.

But Julia’s story was just the beginning of the islands’ long history as a place of confinement and exile.

Fast-forward through history, the Tremiti Islands were also used for lockup during both the Napoleonic era and under Fascism.

Lucio Dalla

Alright, if you’re from Italy, feel free to jump ahead — you already know it! Lucio Dalla , one of Italy’s most beloved singer-songwriters , had a special connection to the Tremiti Islands . This place not only captured his heart but also inspired his creativity like nowhere else.

Famous for his soulful music and poetic lyrics, Dalla chose these quiet and stunning islands as a retreat, an escape away from the bustling world, where he could find peace and muse for his songs.

Tranquility and Seclusion

Now, unlike the usual tourist hotspots around Italy that are crowded all year round, the Tremiti Islands are peaceful—well, except in August.

But generally, their off-the-beaten-path location is just what you need if you’re looking for a break from the crowds. Around here, what you mainly hear are the calming sounds of waves and a light breeze.

What to do in the Tremiti Islands

The Tremiti Islands are a treat for active travelers and nature lovers !

They have tons of fun activities to fit your exploring style, whether you seek adventure or just want to take in the beauty.

Go Snorkeling and Diving

The crystal-clear waters around the Tremiti Islands are a snorkeler’s and scuba diver’s paradise .

Expect an unforgettable underwater experience exploring spots like Architiello di San Domino , La Nave , and Cala degli Inglesi . 🤿

Teeming with colorful marine life and fascinating rock formations , these secret spots will leave you breathless!

Hidden between Capraia and San Nicola islands, you’ll find a surprise – a statue of Saint Padre Pio!

Right at San Domino’s cute little port , you’ll find many dive shops ready to sort you out with all your diving needs.

Lounge on a beach chair under the sun on The Tremiti Islands

While the Tremiti Islands aren’t exactly known for endless sandy beaches (it’s more like hidden coves and rocky shores), they still have amazing spots to soak up the sun.

Cala delle Arene is the main beach . You can’t miss it as you get close to San Domino , with all the umbrellas popping out. It’s got all the amenities you’d expect, but it isn’t exactly my top pick . There’s a secret spot that’s way better!

The spot I’m all about ? Cala Matano . This little slice of sandy paradise is exactly what you’re looking for!

There’s a cozy Lido there, handling all the beach chair and umbrella needs you might have. It’s the kind of place you settle into and forget the time, just enjoying the sun in a more low-key setting .

Cala Matano does come with a bit of a price tag for the beach chair and umbrella rentals. But think of it as an investment in relaxation!

Plus, this is the same beach area where you’ll find the legendary Lucio Dalla’s house ! How cool is that?

Join a Boat Tour

It’s the way to truly appreciate the beauty of the Tremiti Islands and get your bearings for further adventures.

These tours offer a whole new perspective , letting you admire the stunning cliffs from the sea and discover hidden coves you can’t reach by land .

The boat tour options are as varied as the islands themselves! From luxurious private cruises to budget-friendly group tours, there’s something for everyone.

My pro tip ? Join a tour around the island as soon as you arrive . It’ll give you a taste of everything the Tremiti Islands have to offer, helping you map out your land and sea adventures for the rest of your trip.

Rent a private boat

Renting a private boat is my go-to activity on the Tremiti Islands , no doubt! Nothing like dipping into crystal-clear coves unknown to most tourists , or snorkeling in secret underwater paradises – all at your own pace! 🚤

A private boat allows you to be your own captain , exploring secret spots, avoiding the crowds, and enjoying the natural beauty of these islands intimately.

The best part? You don’t need a special license to operate these boats, as long as you stay within the designated area.

Snorkel in hidden coves, try your luck at fishing, or simply cruise along the stunning coastlines – it’s all up to you!

Finding a boat rental is really easy and convenient . Head over to San Domino’s port, where you’ll find tons of options.

Also, your hotel might have some insider recomendation on the best rentals, so don’t hesitate to ask!

The Tremiti Islands offer much more than water adventures . Lace up your hiking boots and explore the network of trails across San Domino . 🥾 These paths will lead you to spectacular panoramic views of the Adriatic Sea – get ready to be speechless!

Plus, you’ll get a chance to immerse yourself in the lush island vegetation and spot some local wildlife .

Even better – these trails are well-maintained and suitable for most fitness levels, so all you need to worry about is enjoying the scenery!

Going around the island took us around 3 hours at a leisurely pace. It’s a really peaceful way to connect with nature and enjoy the serene beauty of the islands.

Explore San Nicola

Beyond the crystal-clear waters, the Tremiti Islands hold a rich history , from ancient monastic settlements to their use as an exile destination during Fascist Italy.

San Nicola Island hides a fascinating story within the walls of the Abbey of Santa Maria a Mare .

Built around the 9th century, the Abbey wasn’t always dedicated to the Virgin Mary .

Originally honoring Saint James the Greater , the Abbey became associated with the Virgin Mary by the 11th century.

Legend has it that a monk named Nicolò is buried here, and disturbing his remains is said to unleash fierce storms, forever binding him to the island.

Enjoy the peace of San Domino eating well!

I have to admit – this was definitely one of my favorite activities on the islands! 😋

Whatever you do, don’t miss the chance to grab a table at A’ Smerza , right on Cale Spido . They serve up delicious fresh seafood dishes and local specialties—all with the most fantastic service and some of the best views of San Domino Island .

I practically lived there for lunch and let me tell you, happy girl indeed!

Also, try the pizzas from  La Fenice . They are very good, and they have other interesting options too, all in a nice setting.

The Tremiti Islands are primarily accessible by ferry from several ports in Puglia, such as Rodi Garganico , Peschici and Vieste .

A return ticket costs around €45, depending on where you depart from, and the service for non-residents typically starts in June .

The crossing is quite pleasant. Depending on the departure point and the type of ferry used, it takes from one hour to a little short of two hours from Peschici , which is the choice I made last time.

It usually arrives and leaves from San Nicola . If you’re staying in San Domino , which is most likely, you can simply hop on one of the numerous boats making the very short crossing without needing to book or worry about it.

At San Domino , the walk downtown takes about 20 minutes, but the first part includes a steep ramp, so it’s best to pack lightly . Taxis are scarce. The Kyrie Hotel , however, is just a 10-minute walk and offers a transfer service. Just be sure to arrange it beforehand.

You can also take a helicopter from Foggia directly to San Domino . It takes about 20 minutes.

The cost isn’t too steep , around €30 each way until June 14 and approximately €60 each way during the high season. Addition fees may apply. Check the company,  Alidaunia , for booking and additional details.

Vehicles are only allowed on the islands of San Domino and San Nicolo , and even there, they are mainly for residents .

Walking and taxi boats or rental boats are, by far, the best ways to explore the islands.

Best Times to Visit the Tremiti Islands

The Tremiti Islands offer a delightful escape year-round, but the prime season for swimming, snorkeling, and enjoying the crystal-clear waters with warm to hot weather is between early June and mid-September .

However, be aware that late July and August are peak tourist months, so expect crowds and potentially higher prices.

Where to Stay at the Tremiti Islands

Now, when it comes to finding a place to stay, you have few options overall on the islands, and even fewer luxurious ones. This is a place to embrace simplicity at its core – charming, comfortable places with all the essentials for a relaxing stay.

Having said that, I recommend staying in San Domino as you’ll have the most activities and restaurants right at your doorstep. You can – and really should! – visit San Nicola by taking a very fast boat. There are plenty of ferries available throughout the day, making island hopping super easy.

I personally stayed at Hotel Kyrie Isole Tremiti , and while the rooms could use a bit of an update, it was a perfectly comfortable place to rest my head after a day of exploring.

The location is very convenient , right in San Domino , so you can easily pop back to your room after a swim or explore the town in the evening. The breakfast buffet is delicious, with plenty of fresh options to fuel your adventures, and the staff is very friendly and helpful.

Plus, considering all the amazing things to see and do on the island, who needs a fancy room anyway, right?

I would definitely stay there again! 😊

What to Bring to Isole Tremiti

Beyond the basics like ID, insurance, phone adapters and beachwear, here are some essential items to pack for your Tremiti Islands adventure:

  • Comfortable Walking Shoes – For exploring the islands’ uneven landscapes and historical landmarks.
  • Sun Protection Gear (hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen) – Essential to safeguard against the strong sun.
  • Lightweight Clothing – Choose breathable fabrics like cotton or linen, perfect to the Mediterranean climate.
  • Snorkeling Equipment – The clear waters offer fantastic opportunities for snorkeling.
  • Beach Towel – Some accommodations provide them, but bringing your own is safer.
  • Reusable Water Bottle – Stay hydrated and eco-friendly.
  • Backpack – This is your trusty companion for day trips, hikes, and carrying all your island essentials.
  • Chargers and Power Bank – Ensure your devices stay charged, especially when out exploring.

Tremiti Islands: mini guide for a breathtaking spot in Southern Italy

gs travel isole tremiti

We always dream of foreign lands, Caribbean beaches and paradise lost since we realize that it’s not necessary to go beyond the boundaries to discover them. They are closer than we think and Italy is full of hidden gems that must be highlighted. Tremiti Islands are one of these pearls.

Tremiti Islands: enchanted land in Apulia

We fell in love with this little corner of “Belpaese” during a summer trip to Apulia. We were based in Gargano – in the city of Rodi Garganico – and we reached the Tremiti on a daily trip by ferryboat. Once we landed there, we were be entirely fascinated by the slow rhythm of nature that their inhabitants seem to follow either. The scent of wild nature, blossom and crystalline water. Everywhere.

The atmosphere here is always calm, genuine and extremely romantic. We guarantee that these islands will bewitch even families with kids. Tremiti have nothing to envy to furthest atolls.

Tremiti Islands are five rocky islands with cliffs, sea caves and coves that appear in the Adriatic Sea a few miles from the Gargano peninsula. Tremiti look like “the three mountains that emerge from the water along the horizon”. San Domino, San Nicola, Caprara, Cretaccio and Pianosa . A handful of green and white. Shrubs, brooms and trees here and there on the rocks. Intense blue sky and clear sea.

Forget your car, motor vehicles are not permitted on the islands. Totally useless since you will mainly explore them by boat or if you are planning an overnight there, you’ll take a local taxi. On these islands the rule of silence dominates. Nature, earth and sea speak. Open your eyes, mind, hears and especially heart to new emotions.

After landing, tourists will be overwhelmed by the intense scent of Aleppo pines that cover the islands until the shores. It’s hard to forget the feelings we felt there.

gs travel isole tremiti

The best beaches for kids at the Tremiti are Cala delle Arene & Cala Matana on the island of San Domino

The inhabited islands are two: San Domino , the widest, the greenest and the one with the highest number of hotels and restaurants, and San Nicola where you breathe a sort of mystic atmosphere. While San Nicola transports visitors back in ancient time, San Domino impresses with its overwhelming nature with coves and lush pine forest. San Nicola is the historical heart of the islands and it charms for the silence that surrounds the entire island. The wild and the mystic.

Tremiti Islands: how to get there and where to buy the ferry tickets

Leave your car at the harbour in a parking lot, buy the ferry tickets and prepare the backpack with all the stuff you need for a daily trip to Tremiti Islands. The Tremiti can be reached by ferryboat with daily departures from Apulia (from the city of Rodi Garganico and Vieste),  from the harbours of Pescara and Vasto in Abruzzo, and also from the town of Termoli in Molise region. From Termoli daily excursions are arranged during summer season only. Different sailing or ferry companies cover the trip from Gargano Promontory, and even tickets fares are different but, on average, it will take about 50 minutes to get there.

Boarding is between 8.30 and 9.30, and the daily trip ends from 16.15 to 17.30. The ferry boat will arrive alternatively to San Domino and San Nicola. Be careful because in the evening, at the end of the daily trip, you must leave Tremiti from the same dock you land. Seats are numbered, so you can not change ferry. Tickets fare can change according to the city of departure and high season. We bought our tickets from Rodi Garganico at the cost of 72€ (25€ per adult and 12€ per kids aged from 3 to 12 years old). Kids under 3 YO travel for free. In this fare, a circumnavigation tour by motorboat was even included.

Please consider that rates are subjected to seasonal variations and must be verified on site.

Daily trip to Tremiti Islands: what you must see

A weekend could be the best solution to enjoy, relax and visit the Tremiti, but even a day trip worth the ferry tickets. There are plenty things to see, and you can live Tremiti Island the fullest even in a day. So, what you must see on a daily trip to Tremiti Islands ?

gs travel isole tremiti

  • The first thing to do: the circumnavigation of the islands ! It’s only by motorboat or paddling that you will enjoy Tremiti the most! Many tours are departing every day from the marina of San Domino and San Nicola, sailing along the beautiful shore of Caprara, San Nicola, San Domino and Cretaccio. Circumnavigation takes at least one hour and a half, and it includes two diving stops. Tickets from 15€ per adult and 7,5€ kids aged 3.
  • On the island of San Nicola, visitors should stop at the Fortress and to St. Mary’s Abbey to discover more about the history of Tremiti. In fact, the history of this island is closely related to the arrival of Benedictine monks on the archipelago, as they founded the Abbey and built much of the town. Here there is an archaeological site that dates back many centuries: visitors can admire a large tank that was used to collect rainwater –  the Vasca di San Nicola – and the grave of the Greek hero Diomedes, who fiercely battle during the Trojan War and came to Tremiti to die in peace.

gs travel isole tremiti

  • A dive at Padre Pio : N 42° 07′ 947 – E 15° 30′ 835  this is the precise position for a plunge in the beautiful sea of Tremiti. Apulia in general, but Gargano, in particular, is devoted to St. Pio of Pietrelcina and on his honour, a huge statue was placed in 1998 asking for protection. The statue is 3 metres high and was set at 14 metres deep.
  • Explore sea caves : San Domino is a sequence of cliffs and sea caves accessible by sea only. The Elephant rock, the Violet cave, the Sea Ox cave, the Swallow cave are the most famous caves that tourist can admire during a trip to Tremiti.

gs travel isole tremiti

Can you see the Elephant of Tremiti Islands?

  • Hiking in the green of San Domino  to admire the islands from another point of view. Go exploring the “Diamonds wood” lush of pinewoods and local greenery.
  • Sunbathing on the warm shore of San Domino at  Cala delle Arene and Cala Matana where you can even rent sunbed and beach umbrella. Tremiti’s beaches are mainly achievable by boat, but among the rocky bays, these are two superb sandy beaches ideal for kids as the sea wane gently.

gs travel isole tremiti

Where to eat at Tremiti Islands

In the height of summer, the Tremiti aren’t exactly a bargain, so the cheapest way is to bring a packed lunch. Eating a sandwich at the beach is an excellent way to save money also, but the kiosks at Cala delle Arene or Cala Matana beaches increase the prices during high season. Close to Cala Matana there is also a pretty restaurant with a view of the bay. If you can’t help eating at the restaurant, tasting some excellent fish dishes, you can either choose  Architiello Restaurant or Nonna Sisina’s Restaurant on the island of San Nicola. Nonna Sisina is a “local granny” that will charm tourists with legends and tales of Tremiti Islands. The restaurant of Nonna Sisina is close to the fortress.

Where to sleep at Tremiti Islands

We went to the Tremiti on a daily trip, so we did not test any hotel on site, but we can recommend Punta del Diamante  house renting or the Touring Club camping village  both on the island of San Domino.

How to visit Tremiti Islands with kids

Your kids will love Tremiti!! But before getting there, you must prepare all their stuff. First of all, forget the stroller, preferring baby carriers. Tremiti are rocky islands full of slippery steps or stairs, and when you are not walking, you will probably be on a boat. On-site there are no baby chairs nor changing tables, so you have to throw together diapers change. But do not despair, the Tremiti are so beautiful that they will worth the efforts! On the island of San Nicola there is a small playground too, ideal for a break. We visited the Tremiti when Federico was 4 YO, and he was enthusiastic about our journey there. He had so much fun that he fell asleep on the ferry back to Rodi Garganico.

gs travel isole tremiti

What to bring with you

Sun, wind and marine salt. Your daily trip will be marked out by these three elements, so it’s essential to protect kids, and adults too… sun cream, sunglasses and bottles of water are mandatory. To avoid seasickness remember to eat something like bread, crackers or a snack before getting on the boat.

You should wear swimsuit, shorts and a T-shirt. Do not forget a windproof jacket for the ferry. Hiking boots are not necessary but bring slippery and sneakers.

If you love to snorkel, bring your equipment!

Best time to visit Tremiti Islands

Like many other Italian destinations, the summer season is the hottest, but we highly recommend you to avoid August. The Tremiti islands’ tourist season runs from May to October, though a handful of hotels and restaurants are open year-round. From May to June the weather is gorgeous, but you’ll probably find fresh or water (according to our Italian standard of course 🙂 ). September and October are our favourite months: prices are lower in comparison to August, beaches are empty and no traffic jam at the marina. If you are looking for silence, quiet and a romantic atmosphere, winter and spring are the ones we recommend, as these are extraordinary months to discover Tremiti Islands.

Isole Tremiti is a beautiful group of three islands in the Adriatic sea

Photo of Isole Tremiti

Visit Isole Tremiti

Isole Tremiti is a stunning archipelago just north of the Gargano peninsula in the Adriatic sea. It is part of the Gargano national park. The group of islands is so named because of its regular seismic activity - tremiti means tremours!

Explore Isole Tremiti

This is a very popular holiday spot in July and August and around 100,000 visitors take the ferry across to the islands each summer. If you are looking for something a bit quieter then visit out of season when the islands return to their natural tranquility. To get there you can get a ferry from Termoli , Foggia, Vieste , Rodi Garganico and Capoiale.

All of the islands are stunning with their white cliffs, dense pine forests and picturesque coves surrounded by the jewel-blue Adriatic Sean. The waters around the islands are clear and teeming with fish making them great for swimming and snorkling.

There are five islands in total: San Domino, San Nicola (St Nicholas), Cretaccio, Caprara and Pianosa.

The largest and most popular island is San Domino and this one is the most organised for tourism. It is also the only island with a sandy beaches. San Domino and St Nicholas are the only two islands that are inhabitated though few are permanent residents. Inland the island is covered in Aleppa pines and wild flowers. This island is the most beautiful. Hotels and facilities can be found in Villaggio San Domino, the islands small town. There is also a diving centre.

During Mussolini's rule San Domina was used as an internment camp for homosexuals. Homosexuals were banned by Mussolini and rounded up and shipped over to the island. Difficult living conditions meant that some died here.

By boat you can reach the caves of Viole, Le Rondinelle and Bue Marino. Inland from the Colle dell'Eremit you can get some great views. Also look out for the elephant rock - a rock which looks like an elephants head.

San Nicola has the only real town, a wonderful medieval, fortress-like town sitting on the top of a cliff on the sea-edge. The Abbey of Santa Maria a Mare is the main monument on the archipelego and both Benedictine and later Cistercian monks once inhabited the abbey. To defend the abbey fortified walls were built and the Castle of Badillo.

The medieval town is home to a number of bars and restaurants as well as various monuments and churches.

Cretaccio is an uninhabited island as is Caprara and they can only be visited by boat. Pianosa is 20 km away and is a marine reserve and not visitable.

Back on the mainland the Gargano peninsula is one of the most beautiful coastal areas of southern Italy. There are many intersting towns and villages to visit on the peninsula.

Vacation in the Tremiti Islands

The Tremiti Islands, also known as the "pearls of the Adriatic", are an archipelago made up of the islands of San Nicola, San Domino, Capraia, the Cretaccio islet, and the island of Pianosa. According to the legend, their origin is linked to the mythological hero Diomedes who, returning from the Trojan War, created the islands by throwing large stones into the sea.

San Domino and San Nicola are the only inhabited islands, while Cretaccio and Capraia can be reached by sea and explored on foot. Pianosa, on the other hand is the most remote island, located on the northern tip of the Puglia region (not to be confused with the homonymous island of the Tuscan archipelago, in the Tyrrhenian Sea).

Apart from their mythological background, the Tremiti Islands are a natural paradise made of bays, caves and crystal-clear waters. If you prefer a relaxed-pace style of vacation but you also wish to discover historical places , castles and ancient abbeys of incredible wonder, make sure that you add Tremiti Islands to your bucket list.

The Tremiti islands are very popular among travelers, especially in spring and summer. If you love nature and adventure but you prefer to avoid the crowds, keep in mind that these islands are also ideal for an autumn weekend getaway.

How to get to the Tremiti Islands

The Tremiti Islands can be reached by ferry or helicopter.

Depending on the time of year, it is possible to travel to the archipelago from Puglia (from the ports of Vieste, Rodi Garganico, Peschici, and Manfredonia) and from the port of Termoli in Molise.

Find all available ferry schedules to the Tremiti Islands in the section below .

Alternatively, you can reach the Tremiti Islands by helicopter from the airport of Foggia .

Useful info : the helicopter service is available all year round but prices are much higher than the ferry service. Moreover, it is necessary to book well in advance as seats are limited.

What to do in the Tremiti Islands

The Tremiti Islands are a well known destination for sea lovers. Moreover, the archipelago combines natural beauties with a rich cultural heritage. Being part of the Gargano National Park , it has lush vegetation, unspoiled landscapes and beautiful cliffs overlooking the sea.

Don’t leave before discovering the forests and sea caves of San Domino, and let yourself be enchanted by the nature of Capraia and the song of its seagulls. Stroll around the historical sites of the island of San Nicola, a real open-air museum. Admire the natural bridge of Cretaccio and explore the dreamy seabed of Pianosa.

In the Tremiti Islands, you can choose between a variety of activities, such as hiking in nature , kayak or boat tour. The seabed of the Tremiti Islands makes this archipelago a paradise for divers that can reach beautiful coves and do guided dives in 23 underwater trails !

Tip : if you want to experience something different, it is worth visiting the Tremiti Islands in December, during the Feast of Saint Nicholas of Myra . You can relive the special atmosphere of the past and taste delicious local products by participating in the processions and medieval-style parades that take place this time of the year.

Beaches in the Tremiti Islands

The Tremiti archipelago stands out for its beautiful rocky inlets, pristine bays and its cobalt blue sea. In most of them there are no services and the most picturesque ones can be reached by following small paths or by boat.

Here are the 10 most beautiful beaches to check out:

  • Cala Zio Cesare (San Domino) : located in the southeast of the island, this rocky bay is situated in a wild and unspoiled setting. It takes its name after the lighthouse keeper who used to dock his boat here. Accessible only by sea, it is ideal for a quick rest under the shade of trees.
  • Cala del Faro (San Domino) : just under the old lighthouse of the island, this cove is perfect for a quiet swim or a quick dive. Immersed in a suggestive landscape, it is the ideal location to relax and enjoy the sunset.
  • Cala Matano (San Domino) : this quiet bay, famous for the color of its waters, has inspired Lucio Dala composing the album Luna Matana . You can reach it by following a narrow trail. There, you can rent umbrellas, deckchairs and practice water sports.
  • Grotta del bue marino (San Domino) : one of the places that definitely worth a visit, this cave takes its name after the monk seal that found shelter here. The cave is divided into 2 parts and one of them ends in a small beach, accessible only by swimming or by boat.
  • Cala delle arene (San Domino) : the largest and most popular beach of the Tremiti. The mesmerizing colors of the sea along with the white sand make this beach ideal for kids. It is also equipped with umbrellas and deck chairs.
  • Cala dello Spido (San Domino) : located on the east coast of the island, this peaceful corner is frequented by private boats. It can also be reached by land, crossing a nature trail. There are no services on the beach.
  • Cala del Cretaccio (Cretaccio) : located in a wild and remote setting, it is an isolated bay suitable for adventure lovers. You can enjoy its crystal-clear waters and explore it in a canoe. Keep in mind that there are no services in the area.
  • Cala del Diavolo (Cretaccio) : ideal place for those seeking tranquility and relaxation in a dreamy set. Famous for its clay rocks and the colors of its sea, it is one of the best spots to watch the beautiful sunset.
  • Marinella beach (San Nicola) : the only real beach of the island with a narrow and elongated shape. Surrounded by a beautiful white cliff, it is perfect for unique photo shoots, especially during summer. It is accessible on foot but the path to get there is a bit challenging. Alternatively, you can reach it by sea.
  • Cala di Sorrentino (Capraia) : this small bay, where nature blooms, is set in a paradisiacal scenery with emerald green waters. Also known as the "Cave of Love", it is preferred by couples for its romantic atmosphere and privacy.

Tremiti Islands ferry Ferry companies, schedules and fares

The Tremiti Islands are an archipelago in the Adriatic Sea in front of the Gargano promontory and consist of the islands of San Domino and San Nicola, the islets of Pianosa and Capraia and the rocks of Cretaccio and La Vecchia. The Tremiti Islands ferry is the only way to reach the islands in both low and high season. The ports of departure from the mainland are, in addition to the main port of Termoli , the ports of Vieste  ,  Rodi Garganico  and Peschici . These two ports only connect the Tremiti in the spring/summer period.

There are three shipping companies operating in the area, two of which are seasonal: GS travel , which operates only on the Termoli Tremiti route, and Navi Tremiti , which connects the other two mainland ports with the Tremiti archipelago. The only company that guarantees territorial continuity throughout the year is Navigazione Libera del Golfo , which operates the main and most popular route all year round from Termoli to the two islands: San Domino on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sunday and San Nicola on Tuesdays and Thursays. In the peak season there are around 10 departures per day while during the rest of the year there are 3 departures per day. Each departure is made only during daylight hours.

TIP : If you like and wish the island hopping you will enjoy the Termoli Tremiti ferries. You can discover the various features of the Tremiti Islands, from the historical beauty of San Nicola to the sandy beaches of San Domino. Thanks to MrFerry you can easily organise the ideal itinerary for your needs and easily compare the available departures and timetables of the various shipping companies. The two islands are always connected by ferries (1 departure every 30 minutes).

Fares If the ferry companies have special promotions at certain times of the year, booking through MrFerry will automatically apply and you will be able to buy your ticket at the best fare available at the time. For those travelling with children, it is useful to know that: Navi Tremiti and GS Travel do not charge for children from 0 to 2 years of age, they apply reduced fares for customers from 3 to 12 years of age and from 13 years of age they are considered full fare. For Navigazione Libera del Golfo (NLG) the distinction is different in that they do not charge only passengers up to one year of age, reduced fares instead go for children from 2 to 11 years of age and from 12 years of age onwards the full fare is automatically applied.

Please note: all tickets are linked at the time of purchase and cannot be changed under date, as there is no time frame. For this reason, it is best to organise your trip as well as possible; for example, if you have to arrive at the port of departure by train, take into account the arrival time at Termoli railway station, which is about 20 minutes' walk from the pier to the Tremiti Islands.

The Tremiti Islands are an Italian archipelago in the middle of the Adriatic Sea, 22 km off the northern coast of the Gargano Peninsula. They constitute a comune in the Puglian province of Foggia .

Understand [ edit ]

Not so far from the spur of Italy’s boot there are five little islands which constitute the only Italian archipelago of the Adriatic Sea.

"This place inspires my visionary way of narrating the world and it also helps to dream, especially if there is a wonderful starry sky, that otherwise you can admire only in the Sahara." This is how the Tremiti Islands are described by Lucio Dalla, the Bolognese singer, who chose the archipelago as his second home.

The unspoilt nature, the crystal clear water and the variety of the colours of the seabeds of these islands attract many visitors every year. The islands have been a marine reserve of the Gargano National Park since 1989.

Islands [ edit ]

gs travel isole tremiti

The archipelago is composed of five islands or "Diomedee", according to the legend. They're part of the Borghi Autentici d'Italia ( Authentic Italian hamlets ).

  • San Domino . The most populated and tourist-friendly island is San Domino, the island that offers most accommodation facilities. The Lighthouse of San Domino is the emblem of the biggest island of the archipelago, covered by a stretch of Aleppo pines. Along the coastline, the rock crumbles into caves, only reachable by boat. Not to be missed are the Grotta del Bue Marino and Punta di Ponente with their wreck of a Roman ship. ( updated Dec 2020 )
  • San Nicola . The Island of San Nicola has been inhabited by several orders of monks for almost one thousand years. It is the historical heart of the Tremiti Islands. It is dominated by the fortified towers of San Nicola and the Abbey of Santa Maria a Mare, with its mosaic floor and impressive walls. Starting from the elegant cloisters of the abbey, a panoramic path embraces the whole island and leads to the Greek tombs. ( updated Dec 2020 )
  • Capraia ( even Capperaia or Caprara ). A completely uninhabited island, covered by several kinds of herbs and flowers including the caper bushes, from which it takes its name. It is the favourite destination for underwater divers, thanks to breathtaking diving in Punta Secca and Cala dei Turchi . ( updated Dec 2020 )
  • Cretaccio . Little more than a rock, is the smallest island of the archipelago. It is uninhabited and wild and looks like a natural bridge to connect the main islands: San Domino and San Nicola. ( updated Dec 2020 )
  • Pianosa . The island of Pianosa is the farthest, approximately 21 km from the others. Due to its limited height, when sea storms occur the island is completely submerged. The name of the island comes from its particular appearance: a plain of scree (what the Italians call a pianoro di pietraia ). ( updated Dec 2020 )

Climate [ edit ]

The Tremiti Islands' climate is Oceanic Mediterranean.

The tourist season runs from May to October. However, the best time to visit the archipelago is in September and October, thanks to the sunny climate, fewer crowds and traffic jams at the marina, and lower prices in comparison to August.

History [ edit ]

The islands were used as a place of confinement from the Iron Age (4th-3rd centuries BC). The Roman Emperor Augustus exiled his granddaughter, Julia the Younger, to the Tremiti on charges of adultery.

gs travel isole tremiti

In the 9th century, the Benedectine monks founded the Abbey of Santa Maria a Mare, on San Nicola, and ruled the archipelago during the Middle Ages. Later, the abbey hosted several orders of monks until 1783, when the King Ferdinand IV of Naples suppressed the abbey and set up a penal colony.

Under the Fascist regime of Benito Mussolini, the Tremiti Islands continued to perform their function of confinement. Hundreds of homosexuals were deported to the internment camp of San Domino, which closed after one year in 1939.

Myth and legend [ edit ]

However, documentation regarding the origin of this archipelago is poor. This lack of information has been filled by the proliferation of several myths and legends. It is believed, indeed, that the islands were born at the hands of the Trojan War hero Diomedes, who threw five boulders that he had carried by him from Troy into the sea, which resurfaced as islands.

The legend continues with Diomedes who was buried on the Tremiti Islands and with his men were transformed by the goddess Aphrodite into seabirds, called “diomedee”, which still inhabit the cliffs of the archipelago and continue with their scream to mourn the death of their leader. This is why the Tremiti Islands are also called “Diomedee Islands”.

Get in [ edit ]

By car [ edit ].

Bringing a car, a motorbike or a camper to the Tremiti Islands is generally not possible, only residents are allowed to have a vehicle.

By boat [ edit ]

The best way to get to the islands is by ferry from the ports of Vasto , Vieste , Manfredonia , Peschici and Termoli . From Termoli, the main port, ferries depart everyday of the year (generally one-way trip takes about 1 hour), while from other ports there are only seasonal runs from July to September. The only year-round company from Termoli to Tremiti, Tirrenia, has a fast ferry (45 min) and also slow ferry (1 hr, 40 min) to San Domino.

By helicopter [ edit ]

You can also reach the Tremiti Islands by helicopter, with the company Alidaunia, which offers flights lasting 20 minutes from Foggia to the San Domino Heliport.

  • 42.11357 15.479929 2 Grotta delle Rondinelle ( Swallows' Cave ), Sentiero Cala delle Rondinelle, 71040 . It takes its name from the swallows that nest there in springtime. The grotto is supported by two big natural pillars. A magical place, known for the way it looks at sunset during the hottest days of summer: the rays of sun that pass through the cave’s entrance create a game of reflections between the water and the walls showing an enchanting variety of colours.
  • 42.10732 15.47764 3 Grotta del Bue Marino ( "Marine Ox" Cave ), Colle dell'Eremita ( at the foot of the cliff called Ripa dei Falconi ). The cave owes its name to monk seals (almost totally extinct in the Mediterranean by now) that in old times inhabited the area, and until a few decades ago wallowed in the waters of the archipelago. It is 70 m long, but only 2 m deep, and has a tiny sandy beach in the back. Due to the shallow depth of the sea in this point, the sunlight gets across the water giving a turquoise colour to the whole space. It sits at the foot of the Ripa dei Falconi, where the legendary birds, the Diomedea, are said to nest. On its ceiling are found the oldest rocks of the islands, dolomitic limestone of fossil origin. As you enter the cave, the light gradually decreases until it is totally devoid of light in the innermost part. Furthermore, the innermost part of the cave divides into two branches, one of which overlooks a small beach.
  • 42.105615 15.484215 4 Grotta delle Viole ( Violets' Cave ), Perimetrale Colle dell'Eremita . Called by many “the fairy cave”. Its name can refer to the purplish shades that can be admired especially in the early morning during summertime, thanks to the combination of the limpid and bluish water with the wide range of wonderfully coloured fish, that emanate charming nuances when they are illuminated by the sunlight; it may also refer to the abundance of violets and other flowers that cover the grotto's sloping rocks.
  • 42.106492 15.477398 5 Pineta di San Domino . It rises 116 m (381 ft) above sea level, consisting of a long path of Aleppo pines, as wild as it is bucolic and poetic, which reaches the coast by two rocky paths; walking through the pine forest, you will arrive at the lighthouse of the island, now defunct and rumoured to soon become part of a luxury tourist resort. It offers beautiful views of the archipelago. ( updated Dec 2020 )
