This East African country is located in the Great Lakes Region in central Africa and boasts an ecological diversity that rivals most other countries. This diversity is enhanced by the multitude of varying ecosystems. Bordered by the Rwenzori Mountains (often called the Mountains of the Moon, the 3rd highest in Africa), the Virunga Mountains and Africa’s largest lake, Lake Victoria, it’s a beautiful country bursting with birdlife and wildlife. When it comes to Uganda as a safari destination, it can boast as one of East Africa’s fastest growing and most exciting safari destinations offering year round opportunities for tourism.

Uganda offers numerous opportunities to experience the safari of a lifetime. There are no other African destinations where one can one see a such a wide variety of primates with so little effort. More than ten monkey species can be found, including that of the great apes. Uganda is by far the smallest of the four African countries in which more than 1,000 bird species have been recorded, and it is particularly rich in western rainforest specialists – in practical terms, undoubtedly the finest bird watching in Africa.

The Bwindi Impenetrable Park

The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park lies in southwestern Uganda on the edge of the Rift Valley. Its mist-covered hillsides are blanketed by one of Uganda’s oldest and most biologically diverse rainforest, which dates back over 25,000 years and contains almost 400 species of plants. More famously, this “impenetrable forest” also protects an estimated 400 mountain gorillas – including several habituated families.

This biologically diverse region also provides shelter to a further 120 species of mammal, including several primate species such as baboons and chimpanzees, as well as elephants and antelopes. There are around 350 species of birds hosted in this forest, including 23 Albertine Rift endemics.

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth National Park is understandably Uganda’s most popular tourist destination. The park’s diverse ecosystems, which include sprawling savannah, shady humid forests, sparkling lakes and fertile wetlands, make it the ideal habitat for classical big game, ten primate species including chimpanzees, and over 600 species of birds.

Set against the backdrop of the jagged Rwenzori Mountains, the park’s magnificent vistas include dozens of enormous craters carved dramatically into rolling green hills, panoramic views of the Kazinga Channel with its banks lined with hippos, buffalo and elephants, and the endless Ishasha plains, whose fig trees hide lions ready to pounce on herds of unsuspecting Uganda kob.

As well as its outstanding wildlife attractions, Queen Elizabeth National Park has a fascinating cultural history. There are many opportunities for visitors to meet the local communities and enjoy storytelling, dance, music, and more. The gazetting of the park has ensured the conservation of its ecosystems, which in turn benefits the surrounding communities.

Kibale National Park

Kibale National Park contains one of the loveliest and most varied tracts of tropical forest in Uganda. Forest cover, interspersed with patches of grassland and swamp, dominates the northern and central parts of the park on an elevated plateau.

The park is home to a total of 70 mammal species, most famously 13 species of primate including the chimpanzee. It also contains over 375 species of birds.

Kibale adjoins Queen Elizabeth National Park to the south to create a 180 kilometre long corridor for wildlife between Ishasha, the remote southern sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, and Sebitoli in the north of Kibale National Park.

The Kibale-Fort Portal area is one of Uganda’s most rewarding destinations to explore. The park lies close to the tranquil Ndali-Kasenda crater area and within half a day’s drive of Queen Elizabeth, Rwenzori Mountains and Semliki National Parks, as well as the Toro-Semliki Wildlife Reserve.

Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls National Park lies at the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley, where the sweeping Bunyoro escarpment tumbles into vast, palm-dotted savannah. First gazetted as a game reserve in 1926, it is Uganda’s largest and oldest conservation area, hosting 76 species of mammals and 451 species of birds.

The park is bisected by the Victoria Nile, which plunges 45 metres over the remnant rift valley wall, creating the dramatic Murchison Falls, the centrepiece of the park and the final event in an 80 metre stretch of rapids.

The mighty cascade drains the last of the river’s energy, transforming it into a broad, placid stream that flows quietly across the rift valley floor into Lake Albert. This stretch of river provides one of Uganda’s most remarkable wildlife spectacles. Regular visitors to the riverbanks include elephants, giraffes and buffaloes while hippos, Nile crocodiles and aquatic birds are permanent residents.

Lake Mburo National Park

Lake Mburo National Park is a compact gem, the smallest of Uganda’s savanna national parks, located conveniently close to the highway that connects Kampala to the parks of western Uganda. It is underlain by ancient Precambrian metamorphic rocks which date back more than 500 million years, and is home to 350 bird species and speckled with zebra, impala, eland, buffalo, oribi, Defassa waterbuck, leopard, hippo, hyena, topi and reedbuck.

Lake Mburo, together with 13 other lakes in the area, forms a big part of a 50 kilometre long wetland system linked by a swamp. Five of these lakes lie within the park’s borders. The park was once covered by open savanna, but now contains vast stretches of woodland as there are no elephants to control the vegetation. Savanna can be found in the western part of the park, interspersed with rocky ridges and forested gorges while patches of papyrus swamp and narrow bands of lush riparian woodland line many of the lakes that the park has to offer.

Wild Frontiers is a tourism stakeholder. We therefore believe in low impact tourism to help conserve Uganda’s wildlife and heritage for future generations to enjoy. We have a shared passion and a vast experienced understanding of Uganda’s rich biodiversity. Our active Responsible Tourism Policy, supported by our Future Generations Trust, consciously and actively aims to protect and conserve the surrounding environmental and wildlife areas in which we operate and share daily with the local community.

We structure our tours around the idea of experiencing, viewing and photographing wildlife, with as little impact on the flora and fauna as possible. We pride ourselves in our world class mountain gorilla viewing (one of our primary safari activities), and as such, we have chosen to be part of the International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP) “ Be Gorilla Friendly ” campaign. Our other tours that operate in and around the local communities are aimed at ensuring authentism and are to be as non invasive as possible for the communities involved.

The operations that are run by Wild Frontiers are almost exclusively managed by a Ugandan staff compliment (over 95%) and are fully Ugandan registered. We operate in a legal and tax compliant manner, belonging to trade and industry associations such as AUTO ,  ATTA , and  USAGA. If and where possible, we make an effort to obtain seats on the boards of these organizations, with the aim of providing help and guidance within the industry so that others may also benefit from our experiences learnt over more than twenty years of tourism in Africa.

The facilities that are utilised for and by our guests comply with the following low impact aims: fuel efficient vehicles and boats; accommodation at small intimate camps and lodges; sustainable fuel use. To ensure this, we encourage our safari guests to act in a responsible way with insight and understanding with local customs to ensure that your safari in Uganda is more enjoyable and fulfilling.

Future Generations Trust

The Future Generations Trust was established in 2019 and has been overseen by a Board of Trustees since it’s inception. It is an extension of our sustained time as a company in Uganda since 1996. The trust is funded by Wild Frontiers and Exclusive Camps & Lodges Uganda guests, with each person and bed night booked contributing towards the income of the trust. This income is used to fund our commitment and involvement in achieving these goals:

1. Creating a New Generation of Conservationists and Solutions to counter Human/Wildlife Conflict. 2. Promoting and Supporting Sustainable and Self-Funding Mechanisms to provide economic growth to our surrounding communities. 3. Encouraging Staff Volunteer Programs to assist local communities and younger generation educational projects 4. Ensuring our impact on the Environment within our Operations Are Ethical, Environmentally Friendly and Sustainable.

How can you get involved?

We encourage our guests to participate in the community tourism products we offer, sample local food and buy local arts and crafts. All of these actions help generate income for those people involved in the local communities.

If you are interested in making donations towards items such as school stationary, clothes or even monetary gifts, we would encourage you to do so through our Future Generations Trust or one of the organisations we have identified. Please feel free to ask us any questions on which items would be most useful and in demand at the time. One of the easiest and most well received donations in the past has been as simple as a soccer ball. Football is a sport in Africa and the World that can be shared and enjoyed by all, especially for a group of children at a local school in Uganda!

Some of our preferred projects and community products that are also supported by the Future Generations Trust are listed below:

Bwindi, the epicentre of tourism to Uganda, has experienced tremendous growth over the years. This hospital project, which has been running for some time, plays a massive role in supporting this large and scattered community. The support and annual donations that it receives provide a small amount of assistance in the bigger scheme of things. We encourage taking visitors to go and see the hard work that is being done first hand.

A small rural community group, based close to the edge of southern Queen Elizabeth National Park. Their livelihoods are focused on subsistence farming, who face daily challenges, including crop raiding, as they work towards earning a living to support their families. The community members, despite living hand to mouth, have initiated a Savings and Credit scheme towards which they contribute regularly. This scheme allows them to build up funds for investments in additional land and income bearing projects such as chicken rearing.

Educational tourism activities, run by a craftswoman, tailor and subsistence farmer named Agartha, are made available for visitors, bringing in much required income for the community and its people. Agartha’s Taste of Uganda tour  welcomes you into her homestead and shares with you how the women of the Bakiga tribe prepare their local food and keep their home. During the tour Agartha weaves in stories of her life as a Bakiga wife whilst encouraging you to taste what you have prepared together.

This experience is supported by us and we encourage our visitors to take part. It was created as part of the Batwa Empowerment Village (BEV) and community visits. Visitors will have Batwa guides taking them through the forests, experiences the culture of the Batwa people, whilst learning how they lived and hunted. There is also time to learn about medicinal plants and watch for animals and birds.  Why not opt to share a traditional meal with the Batwa, hear ancient legends and traditional songs whilst joining in a mock hunting party? You can even test your skill with a Batwa bow and arrow and participate in traditional dances.

Ride 4 a Woman is a charitable organisation set up to support and empower women struggling with poverty, HIV and domestic violence in Buhoma. The Trust provides ongoing support by buying, using and selling their locally made products and taking clients to visit their projects.

Wildlife Clubs of Uganda, established in 1975, is a nationwide organization dedicated to protecting wildlife and the environment by engaging youth in conservation education. We maintain a network of over 1000 Wildlife Clubs in schools and communities nationwide, and work with youth everyday to realize the importance of Uganda’s wildlife, wild landscapes, and natural resources. In all our activities, we seek a more sustainable and prosperous future for all Ugandans. The Trust is initiating Wildlife Clubs at:

• Paraa Primary School for the youth surrounding Paraa at Murchison Falls National Park
• Zendaiere Primary School for the youth adjacent to Ishasha, Queen Elizabeth National Park
• Watoto Primary School in Buhoma adjacent to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

This organisation is involved in may productive projects in and around Uganda. We have actively been supporting and also encouraging support to this organisation to their projects including the Elephant trench project in Ishasha, which is close to our Ishasha Community and Wilderness Camp. The Foundation works tirelessly on Park Recovery in Uganda and has a network of Anti-Poaching activities, mainly based in Queen Elizabeth National Park and Murchison Falls National Park. The Uganda Conservation Foundation provides and has provided invaluable support to The Uganda Wildlife Authority.

Spearheaded by the Wildlife Conservation Society, the Lion Alliance is a grouping of stakeholders in Queen Elizabeth National Park who work towards initiating mechanisms to recover the Lion population in the Park. The main aims of the alliance are that of addressing the lion-human wildlife conflict, using and monitoring data available and developing formal collaborative frameworks for all stakeholders involved.

Buhoma Lodge

Buhoma Lodge commands spectacular and uninterrupted views of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, home to the endangered Mountain Gorilla. Situated on the edge of the National Park, we’re just a short distance from the meeting point for gorilla tracking.

Buhoma Lodge is eco friendly and has been constructed using sustainable local materials where possible and uses solar power. Ishasha Wilderness Camp

Ishasha Wilderness Camp is an idyllic retreat for people who truly enjoy the wilderness set in Uganda’s spectacular Queen Elizabeth National Park. This intimate camp has been awarded a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence for its superb quality accommodation and exceptional service.

Set next to the Ntungwe River, each of the camp’s ten spacious canvas tented rooms has a private verandah overlooking the river. Comfortably furnished with large mosquito-netted beds, all rooms are en suite with hot ‘bush’ showers, running water for hand basins and a flushing ‘eco-friendly’ toilet.

The thatched central lounge and dining area provide a comfortable setting for meals and relaxation, although we often serve meals ‘al fresco’ next to the river. In the evening, the outdoor fireplace is the perfect place for guests to relax with sundowners and share their day’s experiences.

Being within the park the wildlife is free to also pass through the camp and elephants can be seen bathing in the river, buffalo enjoy grazing and resident troops of Black-and-White Colobus and vervet monkeys are frequently viewed. Bush breakfasts and sundowners within the park complete the ‘bush’ experience offered at Ishasha Wilderness Camp.

Moses was born in Kalagala-Lyantonde district located at the border of Ankole and Buganda kingdom in the central area of Uganda.

3. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park – Gorilla Land

This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located in the southwestern region. Bwindi is a popular destination for almost all Uganda safaris and tours for being home to about half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, but it also has over 350 bird species, including 23 Albertine Rift endemics and seven IUCN Red List species.

This is most remote and least visited park for safaris in Uganda, located in the northeastern corner of the country. Kidepo Valley National Park covers an area of 1,442 square kilometers and features rugged mountains, valleys, plains, and rivers. The park is one of the most scenic and pristine in Africa, with stunning views and diverse wildlife. The park has over 475 bird species and 77 mammal species, some of which are endemic or rare in Uganda, such as cheetahs, ostriches, bat-eared foxes, caracals, and roan antelopes.

5. Kibale Forest National Park

Kibale Forest National Park is another popular destination for Uganda safaris famous for being the primate capital of the world making it the best place in the world to track chimpanzees. The park covers an area of 795 square kilometers (307 square miles) of tropical rainforest, where more than 1,500 chimpanzees live alongside 12 other primate species, including red colobus monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, red-tailed monkeys, and L’Hoest’s monkeys. You can also explore the nearby Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, which is a haven for birds and monkeys.

6. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the smallest but most scenic national park in Uganda covering an area of 33.7 square kilometers at the southwestern corner Uganda. The park is part of the Virunga Massif, a chain of volcanic mountains that host mountain gorillas. Mgahinga is home to one habituated gorilla family open to safaris to Uganda featuring gorilla trekking, however, this family sometimes crosses the border into Rwanda or Congo, so it is advisable to check their availability a few weeks to your travel. Other activities here include; hiking the three volcanoes, visiting the Batwa pygmies, birdwatching, and golden monkey tracking are possible

Entebbe, a recreation town shoring Lake Victoria, is Uganda’s gateway and a base for most Uganda safari tours. It boasts several attractions and activities to include; The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC), also known as Entebbe Zoo, is a conservation and education facility with over 250 animals. Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary Located on a 40-hectare island in Lake Victoria is a refuge for orphaned and rescued chimpanzees. Botanical Gardens, home to diverse plants and birds. Uganda safaris – where & when to go, and what to do and see

Thinking of a Uganda safari? With the big five and some of the world’s best gorilla and chimpanzee trekking on offer Uganda is a safari destination that has it all. Now is a good time to go, as Uganda has yet to take off as a tourist destination in as large a way as many of it’s neighbours. This means safaris in Uganda can prove good value, with less crowds around when you get to the wildlife. It also has something of ‘the road less travelled’ feel about it.

Uganda is small by African standards at ‘just’ 236,000 km sq, around the same size as Great Britain. The country is lush and a verdant green, with one third of its borders made up of three of Africa’s Great Lakes, and the Victoria Nile running through the center. The East African tropical heat is tempered by an average altitude of 1,000 meters, with the east and west borders featuring significant mountains.

Self drive safaris are an option in some national parks in Uganda, though you will need access to a 4WD to get the most out the parks due to the clay tracks. The wildlife in Uganda doesn’t compare favourably in terms of density with it’s East African neighbours Kenya and Tanzania, but it is extremely diverse with over 500 mammal species alone. There are pockets with strong wildlife density – such as Murchison Falls National Park, which is relatively small with exceptional wildlife viewing – but the big safari draw in Uganda is the primate life. Uganda is probably the prime destination in the world for trekking opportunities to see habituated chimpanzee and gorilla families in the wild – a truly memorable experience, and one of the best walking safaris to be found anywhere.

Poaching and deforestation continue to be a problem in Uganda – as in much of the rest of Africa – and a recent oil discovery in Lake Albert has led to encroachment into a small area of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Despite this the general standard of national parks in Uganda is excellent, with good facilities, public transport access and range of lodgings, though infrastructure is not particularly developed. Tourist numbers in Uganda are much smaller than neighboring Kenya or Tanzania, meaning national parks are generally less crowded and offer a more enjoyable and intimate visiting experience.

As a relatively small country with a consistent altitude, the majority of the country enjoys the same topical climate. In the higher mountainous areas to the east and west of the country it can get surprisingly cold at night times. As with the rest of East Africa there’s a ‘long rain’ and a ‘short rains’ season – March to May and October to November respectively. During the short rains it generally rains only for short periods at a time, meaning your wildlife viewing will not be too disrupted. Aside from the stunning vistas and virgin forest, the big draw here is the chance to see chimpanzees in their natural habitat, with both chimpanzee tacking and habituation experiences on offer year round.

 Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Meaning ‘darkness’, Bwindi’s magnificent forest is certainly dense, and has hundreds of diverse mammal species (and 200 hundred species of butterflies!) alongside the population of around 320 mountain gorillas. There are four different areas with accommodation in the park to track habituated gorillas – Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo.

Mgahinga National Park

Uganda’s smallest national park – just 34 km sq – in the south west of the country is part of the larger Virunga Conservation area that also spreads across Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo. Gorilla trekking is the main activity here, though spending a few days in the park will also allow you to hike the Virunga Volcanoes for unparalleled views of central Africa, and track the endangered golden monkey.

Uganda is arguably the most attractive country in Africa to birders, not only because of the unusually high number of species recorded with in its boarders, but also due to its easy access to several bird-rich habitats that are difficult to reach elsewhere.

Uganda’s remarkable avian diversity of about 1,050 species (more than 50% of the total bird species in Africa) recoded in an area similar to that of Great Britain-can be attributed to its location at a transitional point between the East African savanna, the west African rain forest and the semi-desert of the north.

Uganda is a true pearl of Africa Ecologically, Uganda is only where the East African savanna meets the West African jungle! Where else in this globe can one observe lions prowling the open plains in the morning and track chimpanzees in the rain forest undergrowth the same afternoon, then the next day navigate tropical channels teeming with hippos and crocodiles before setting off into the misty mountains to stare deep into the eyes of mountain gorillas?!! Certainly Uganda is the only safari destination where range of forest primates is as impressive as its selection of Antelopes. And it’s of particular interest to birdwatchers that over 1,050 species of birds (more than 50% of the total bird species in Africa) have been recorded! Most of these specials are west African and Congolese forest birds that would be very difficult to see elsewhere. This is the reason to why the rainforests of western Uganda must be seen as the country’s most important bird homes and one that is of greatest interest to birders where the most alluring forests in terms of localized species are; Semliki Valley National Park, Budongo Forest Reserve, Kibale Forest and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Most forest birds are secretive some elusive that skulk on tall tree canopies! and it can be difficult to get, even not to have a glimpse on them in the dense undergrowth, BUT looking at them can be simpler with the best local bird enthusiasts most of them capable of identifying all species by call, and even calling up the more responsive species with their lips whistles! Otherwise, wilderness of Uganda is full of a million incredible creatures; from tiny to the tall, from slow to the speed and magnificent sceneries thrilling right away from rugged terrain scenery and arid badlands of Karamoja-Kidepo Valley National Park region in the north to the misty mountainous areas of Kigezi and Kisoro region in the south.

As we begin our Uganda Wild Adventure Safari, We will start off in Kampala, the capital city of Uganda, before journeying to the iconic Murchison Falls National Park. Here you will explore the incredible wildlife that can be found in the park, including large mammals such as elephants, buffalo and lions. You will also have the opportunity to go on a game drive, bird watching and enjoy a boat cruise up the Nile. We will then travel to the stunning Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to the endangered mountain gorillas. You will have the chance to go on a guided gorilla trek through the dense forest and witness these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. From Bwindi, we will head to Kibale National Park for a chimp trekking experience. Here you will encounter chimpanzees and other primates in the tropical rainforest. Our final destination will be Queen Elizabeth National Park, where you will go on a game drive and spot some of the park’s incredible wildlife.

Arrive in Entebbe and transfer to your hotel. Nicknamed the “Pearl of Africa,” Uganda shines with stunning greenery, deep lakes, soaring mountains, and perhaps the greatest natural treasure of all you will be met by a GoExplore representative who will then transfer you to your accommodation overnight.

After breakfast, you will take a scenic drive through rolling hills dotted with tea estates starting at Kibale Forest National Park. Rapidly becoming a must-do destination in Uganda Kibale Forest offers an accessible and enlightening insight into life in a tropical rainforest. Large mammals aren’t so easily seen but the clouds of dazzling butterflies and gorgeous forest birds more than makeup for it. Besides, it is most famous for its primates and it is commonly known as the primates’ capital with about 13 species of primates. The commonest being the Chimpanzees. You will be transferred to the park headquarters for a briefing and thereafter, the search for the amazing chimpanzees begins. As you track the chimpanzees you will have an opportunity to see other wildlife species such as the rare L’Hoest’s monkey, the Guereza Colobus, the Blue monkey, Grey-cheeked mangabey, Red tailed monkey, the Olive baboon among others. You will observe them as they feed, play as well as socialize with each other. The tracking takes about 2-3 hours and thereafter you will proceed to your accommodation overnight

Drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park. The drive offers magnificent views of the rift valley. Queen Elizabeth National Park is covered by Savannah vegetation, humid forests, lakes, and fertile wetlands which makes it the ideal habitat for a variety of wildlife species like buffaloes, elephants, warthogs, baboons, and Lions. It also has over 600 bird species. Once you have settled in, you will go for an afternoon game drive in the park.

Rise up early to go for a morning game drive. You will catch up with the early risers and predators returning to their hideouts. You will most likely meet grazing Hippos, Elephants, Lions, spotted Hyenas, bush bucks, water bucks, stripped jackals, comical warthogs, and the elusive leopard. You will also visit the Katwe salt lake. Later in the afternoon, go for a boat ride on Kazinga Channel. The Kazinga Channel is home to many of the captivating species that inhabit the park and taking a boat ride along it gives tourists a chance to cruise just meters from the enormous hippos and buffalos while elephants linger on the shores. Later return to your accommodation overnight.

After breakfast, you will drive to Ishasha which is the southern part of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The place is famously known for its very exceptional residents – The tree climbing Lions. These are usually major highlight attractions for most of the guests that visit this park. You will go for a sundowner game drive where you might be able to see the tree climbing Lions lazily relaxing in the huge fig trees. There are plenty of other wildlife species to see like Elephants, buffaloes, and many other antelopes.

Have another morning game drive in search of tree-climbing Lions in case you did not spot them the previous day. Later, drive to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park which is one of Uganda’s major national parks and habitat to over five hundred mountain gorillas. The park is situated in the mountainous areas of southwestern Uganda close to the border of Rwanda. You will proceed to your accommodation overnight.

After breakfast, with your packed lunch, your guide will drive you to the park headquarters for a briefing about the do’s and don’ts during your gorilla trekking. Your Gorilla tracking will start immediately after the briefing. It is a memorable and amazing experience watching the Mountain gorillas feed, play around, and also do their day-to-day activities. This activity can take 2 hours or even up to 8 hours since it’s dependent on the location and movement of the gorillas. Also, expect to walk long distances in muddy and steep conditions- this will require you to have a walking stick. On meeting the gorillas, you will spend one hour with them as you take photos and watch then play and swing on tree branches. Later return to the lodge and choose to relax in the afternoon or visit ride for a woman community project that was started up to support women earn a living from making crafts.

Start the day with an early morning breakfast and thereafter drive to Lake Mburo National Park. The park is the smallest of Uganda’s Savannah National parks and is home to a number of wild animals some of which are not found anywhere else in Uganda, especially Impalas. You will also be able to see Oribis, buffalos, waterbucks, and hippos. It also harbors quite a number of bird species totaling up to 350 species. You will have a game drive. The beauty is that you will be able to see some animals even as you enter the park. Once you have settled in, you will either choose to do horseback riding in the park or go for an evening game drive.

Take an early morning nature walk which is a perfect way to explore the wild as you get up close to wildlife like Girrafes and zebras. Later drive back to Entebbe. You will stop by the Equator where you will get the opportunity to take some pictures and buy a few souvenirs. Thereafter after proceeding to Entebbe for your flight back home.

Mountain Gorilla

As the major highlight of every safari tour to Uganda, Mountain gorilla in Uganda are found in Bwindi Impenetrable forest jungle and Mgahinga national parks. More than half of the world’s population of mountain gorillas live here in Uganda. Gorillas spend most of their time feeding on leaves, celery, bamboo shoots, fruits and pulps. Gorillas are vegetarian. The mature silverback weighs up to 230kg and reach a height of 4-6 feet standing. Males are big than females. They live in family groups of 5 – 40 individuals with a dominant silverback heading the group. Gorillas lay nests on grounds each night or in low trees to rest. They live up to 35years old. It’s always an amazing experience to go trekking and see gorillas face to face in their natural habitat and learn more about them.

Chimpanzees are the closest relative to humans, sharing up 98% of their DNA. These chimpanzees live in tropical forests of Uganda. Chimpanzee in Uganda can be seen best in Kibale national park where the forest has over 1500 chimps living in a community. The African Elephants have continued to increase after facing hunting challenge of years back. The best places to see African elephants in Uganda is Queen Elizabeth national park, Murchison falls national park, Kidepo valley national park and a few sights of Forest elephants are in Kibale and Bwindi impenetrable forest national parks. Elephants weigh between 4000kg to 6000Kgs when old, they eat up to 200kg of grass a day and drink up to 150litres of water.

A Lion is one of the safari animals that most visitors wish to see on any Safari to Uganda and Africa at large. Leopards are usually seen resting up in the trees and they are very shy making it hard to spot them. African Buffalo

Buffalo is one of the big five animals and can be seen in most protected areas in Uganda. In any safari to Uganda’s protected areas be assured of viewing buffalos either in water or on land. Buffalos can be spotted during boat cruise on Kazinga channel in Queen Elizabeth national park and along the Nile during boat cruise in Murchison falls national park.

Golden Monkey

Golden monkeys in Uganda are seen in Mgahinga national park only. It is one of Uganda’s 20 primate species and it is very rare and elusive. They are unique in appearance with an outstanding color almost gold hence the name golden monkeys. They are playful and quick in their movements.

Rothschild Giraffe

The Rothschild giraffe are the tallest giraffe standing up to 19.7feet and the only type found in Uganda. These can be seen in Kidepo valley national park, Lake Mburo national park and Murchison falls national park. They have long sturdy legs with the front legs longer than the back ones. They feed on leaves, flowers, seedpods and fruits.

In Uganda zebras are best seen in Lake Mburo national park and Kidepo valley national park. Zebras are herbivores and live in savanna plains. They are easy to identify by their black and white stripes and these stripes are unique with each and every zebra. There are over 3000 zebras in Uganda.

African Civet

African Civet is an native animal of sub-saharan Africa. It is a nocternal animal commonly seen in woodland and secondary forests.  Civet has a dense fur which is short and greyish in color with black spots arranged in rows along the body. About a third of their tail are marked with stripes and their face is solid grey except the white muzzle and black markings around the eyes that go down the to the face. African Civet have short mane around their neck which runs to their back. Civets are omnivorous and their diet is comprised of Insects, rodents, eggs, reptiles, carrions, fruits, crabs, birds and sometimes they take prey on paultry and young lambs. African civet females become sexually active at one year old,  and may have 1-2 litters in a year. Young civets are usullay born in stages relative to most carnivores, they usullay have fur which are dark. young civets always depend on mothers milk for about 6 weeks. Civets are always solitary but pairs can be seen when mating. They have variaty of visual olfactory and auditory means of communication. Individuals usually mark the territory with their ascent gland which play a major social role especially to convey information to their fellows. African civets suffer predation from Hyena, leopard, snakes and lion.

Hippopotamus

These are second largest animals in the world and also referred to as Hippos. In Uganda Hippos are common and their sights are guaranteed in the national parks. They can be seen in Queen Elizabeth national park, Lake Mburo national park, Murchison falls national park and visiting one of these parks it’s a must to see these hippos. Hippos spend most of their time in water and come out at night to graze.

Nile Crocodile

The Nile crocodiles are the most species of crocodiles seen in Uganda especially in Queen Elizabeth, Murchison falls national parks and along lakes and rivers like Albert and Victoria. These can measure up to 6meters long and can weigh up to 700kg. They feed on predators especially fish.

Sitatunga is a semi aquatic antelope that lives permanently in swamps. They usually come out to feed on the shoreline but they are very shy and they feed on swamp vegetation and woody vegetation. The females are light brown with white spots and long spiral horns. In Uganda they are usually seen in lake Mburo national park.

Vervet Monkey

These stay in woodlands, grasslands near lakes, rivers and swamps. Vervet monkeys feed on leaves, fruits, and small animals like lizards. They stand on hind legs once they spot danger and make alarm calls to warn the rest and usually they climb up from the ground for safety.

Impalas are graceful antelopes with long necks and slender legs. Females are hornless and males have S-shaped wide set horns. They feed on grass and shrubs and they are most active during the day.

Warthog (Pumba)

Common Warthogs are wild pigs found in the savanna parks in Uganda. They are gray, black or reddish after wallowing in mud and can survive in areas without water for months. They usually kneel on their knees while feeding which is a funny strange behavior. They are herbivores feeding on grass, roots, fruits, barks and plants. They hide from their predators by entering abandoned burrows in a reverse direction ready to jump out in case of danger.

Red tailed monkey

These are social primates that live in groups of up to 30 individuals. They are active in the mornings and evenings feeding on ground but rest up in the trees. They are omnivorous feeding on fruits. Leaves, flowers and insects. They have tails with red color increasing from base to tip, have white nose and cheeks with black or dark grey body fur.

Black and White Colobus monkey

These are the most common and wide spread in Uganda. They are beautiful primates with white face and long tail, black body with white side stripe. They feed on leaves, flowers, twigs and fruits. Black and White colobus monkeys live in forests, wooded grasslands and riverine forests. These can be seen in Kibale national park, Ssemuliki, Bwindi Impenetrable forest and Queen Elizabeth national parks in Uganda among others.

Bush bucks are shy antelopes that lives in dense thickets and riverine forests. They feed mostly at night, early mornings or late afternoon on branches, fruits, flowers and grass. Only males have horns which are spiral and fairly straight parallel to one another. They have white spots and stripes.

Eland is the largest of the antelopes and they are herbivorous feeding on grass, fruits, herbs and leaves. The Elands live in savanna plains, grasslands, woodlands but avoid dense forests. In Uganda Elands can be seen in Kidepo valley national park, Lake mburo national park and Pian Upe wildlife reserve. They are in two types the common eland and Giant eland which is the largest antelope.

The Uganda Kob is one of amazing animals found in Uganda that you may frequently see on a game drive. Uganda Kob has a reddish brown fur coat with white patches around the neck and underneath the belly. There is also a white ring around each eye and a black strip that runs down the front of each foreleg. Males only have horns that are shorter, thicker shaped in S-profile and ringed almost to the tip. They have medium length horns and large ears. They live in moist savanna, flood plains and woodlands of Uganda especially in Murchison falls national park and Queen Elizabeth national park.

L’Hoest Monkey

These prefer to live in mountainous areas with forests and savanna woodlands along the slopes. They have a black face with white bibs on both cheeks. They majorly feed on leaves, roots, fruits and other variety of food like small birds and reptiles. In Uganda they can be seen in Kibale forest national park and Bwindi impenetrable national park.

Cheetahs are the fastest animal in Africa on land and in Uganda cheatahs can be seen only in Kidepo Valley national park which is located in northeastern part of the country. They live in open grassland, Savanna plains and Rocky Mountains. Cheetahs have a gold coat with black spots and a black tear mark that runs down the eye to the corner of the mouth. They are rarely seen in Uganda but the best luck is got on several game drive safari in Kidepo national park.

Grey Cheeked Mangabey

They are found in Kibale national park and Semuliki national park in Uganda. They feed on fruit, shoots, flowers and insects. They live in groups of up to 30 individuals and spend most of their time up in the canopy and they leap through the forest with help of strong tail that hooks on branches. They are small with thick brown fur with little golden mane around the neck.

Baboons are one of the animals found in Uganda, frequently encountered along the road sides, in fringes of forest reserves and in many parts of the country. In Uganda, there only olive Baboons which are the sociable primates living in groups of up to 50 individuals spending most of their time grooming each other and playing. Baboons are omnivorous and usually aggressive where there is food. The Baboons feed as they move during early morning, afternoon with babies carried at the back or on the chest when still very young. They spend the rest of day time grooming each other.

Klipspringer

Klipspringers stay in rocky habitats like rocky hills, koppies and gorges with rocky sides. In Uganda they can be seen on Lake Mburo national park and Kidepo valley national park. They feed on herbs, flowers, fruits, grass, shrubs, barks, leaves and green shoots. They have cylindrical hooves pointing downwards giving them a tip top walk on rocks.

Jackal Side stripped Jackal and Black backed Jackal; Side stripped jackal is a native to central and southern Africa, dwelling in woodland and scrub areas of most savannas. Side stripped jackels are nocternal animals, dog like carnivore. The side stripped jackal are rarely seen and appear more larger than the more common blck backed jackal. Their body color is grey buff, with a darker back. the sides are marked with white stripe  having black lower margins. The tail is dark tail is tipped with white while the ears are dark buff in color. Jackal is omnivorus and their diet is comprised of wide varieties of food, they changes diet in response to environment conditions which include, small mammals, fruits maize, reptiles eggs, birds and carrions. they are less preditory compared to the black backed jackal. They mate throughout the year but most of mating occur in june and july. Females give birth to four to six pups after a gestation period of 57-64 days especially in August to november.  during breeding, a pair remains in close proximity, jackels are territorial animals of which each terrotory is held by monogamous pair and their recent off springs. Topi are one of the most common and widespread antelopes in Africa. They live in grassland and woodlands. They prefer to stay in areas with green grass of medium height that goes up to dry seasons. They have dark musk on their faces, dark purple patches on their upper legs and elongated heads with a hump on the base of the neck. Topis are usually a lot in an area or absent

Spotted Hyena

Spotted hyena is one of the amazing animals found in Uganda. A Spotted Hyena has a variable color from pale buff to dull grey, with the whole body marked with irregular spots which turns to fainter with age. A hyena is large powerful built animal with dark tipped, bushy short tail. These hyenas live in clan of related females and unrelated males centered on a den. Hyenas are frequently seen in most of Uganda savanna parks such as Queen Elizabeth national park, Murchison falls national park and in Lake Mburo national park. Female hyena appear larger than males, producing up to 4 cubs which are born black in color. Hyenas are well known for scavenging, following lions to share the kill. Despite of this behavior, they are also good hunters, kills Uganda Kobs, calves, Topi and other small antelopes

Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale Forest National Park is a life-changing experience for travelers to Uganda.

Kibale’s most popular activity is the Kanyanchu Primate Walk. Thirteen species can be sought, and a good variety of diurnal monkeys invariably encountered, but the stars of this twice-daily show are chimpanzees.

Thirteen species can be sought, and a good variety of diurnal monkeys invariably encountered, but the stars of this trail are the chimpanzees. Kanyanchu’s chimps have been tracked since 1993 and the chances of locating them are excellent. Guided walks start at 8 am and 2 pm and last an average of three hours, depending on various factors.

The perennially popular primate walk provides the chance to observe chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Kanyanchu’s groups are accustomed to human presence – some have been observed for over 25 years – and the chance of locating them is over 90%. Walks leave Kanyanchu Visitor Centre at 08.00, 11.00, and 14.00 and last between 2-5 hours. Early arrival to allow for registration and briefing is recommended. Contact time with chimpanzees is limited to one hour; group size is limited to six visitors; participants must be aged 16 or over. Advance booking is essential.

This biologically diverse region also provides shelter to a further 120 mammals, including several primate species such as baboons and chimpanzees, as well as elephants and antelopes. There are around 370 species of birds hosted in this forest, including 23 Albertine Rift endemics. The Nahan’s francolin, Cassin’s spinetail, blue-headed bee-eater, and low-land masked apalis.

Most prominent among Kibale’s primates is the chimpanzee population surge of about 1,500 individuals, divided into at least a dozen different communities, four of which are habituated to humans. The Kanyantale community has been subject to daily tourist tracking since 1993.

The best time to visit Uganda is definitely the dry seasons of between July and September and December to February, however, the Uganda safari parks of Murchison Falls National Park and Kidepo Valley National Park are best to visit all year round. With an all year-round warm temperature in both the northern and southern hemispheres of Uganda, there’s no better place to visit than where you can expect rain and sunshine even within the same hour.

4. Chimpanzee tracking / chimp trekking on a Uganda safari Chimpanzees are known to be man’s closest relatives sharing about 99% DNA with humans and yet declining in number in the wild. To incorporate flights into our safaris we have stationed some of our customised safari 4×4 Landcruiser vehicles with trained and experienced guides in Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth, Kibale Forest and Murchison Falls National Park. You can now substitute the long 8-10+ hour drives to some of these locations with a scenic  1 ½ hour flight from Entebbe International Airport, leaving you more time to enjoy the lodges and surrounding activities.

Perfect for travellers on a short time frame our 3-6 day packages allow you to fly in to track Mountain Gorillas and/or enjoy the game and dramatic scenery of Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls National Parks.

Our 3 day / 2 night fly-in safari, is specially designed for those who wish to trek the Mountain Gorillas in a minimum amount of time, or who prefer not to spend too much time travelling from one place to the next.

The safari flies direct from Entebbe to the Bwindi area for the experience of a lifetime with a thrilling visit to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park to trek the magnificent Mountain Gorillas.

Uganda lies astride the equator in Eastern Africa between longitudes 29 O  east and 35 0  east and between latitudes 4 O north and south, at an average altitude of 1,100 meters above sea- level. Uganda’s total area is 236,580 sq/km and it boarders Kenya in the East, DRC in the West, South Sudan in the North and Tanzania in the South.

What is there to see in Uganda?

Known as the “Pearl of Africa,” Uganda is located in the geographical heart of Africa (East Africa) and offers some of the continent’s most diverse wildlife viewing, dramatic landscapes, and immersive cultural experiences. Uganda is home to more than half the world’s population of mountain gorillas, and trekking to observe these gentle giants in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is one of the world’s top bucket list travel activities. Safari opportunities abound in savanna, forest, and wetland settings throughout 10 national parks, where visitors can come face to face with “The Big Five” – lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo – as well as giraffe, zebra, chimpanzee, hippopotamus, crocodile, and more than half of all bird species found in Africa. Among Uganda’s extraordinary natural attractions are the snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains; expansive Lake Victoria, which forms the source of the Nile River; and Murchison Falls National Park.

What is the age limit for gorilla tracking?

The age limit for gorilla tracking both in Uganda and Rwanda is 15 years. This also applies to golden monkey tracking only in Uganda. Please make sure that all members are 15 or older in order to avoid any inconveniences. We shall always ensure that before you book our Gorilla tracking Uganda safaris, you do qualify to have an encounter with the gorillas. The age limit for trekking chimpanzees in Uganda is 12 years old and children 10 years and older are allowed to trek golden monkeys in Rwanda as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

How many people are allowed to trek a gorilla family?

How and where do i get gorilla or chimp tracking permits.

Gorilla tracking is limited to only 18 people per day and 8 people per gorilla family. The permits are available only for people above 15 years and can be obtained only from the Uganda Wildlife Authority offices.

When is the best time to track Gorillas?

Gorillas are available all year through and can only be tracked in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga National Park both found South Western Uganda. Tracking is best done and suitable during relatively dry seasons of February to March and July to September during morning hours.

Remember, of the few remaining mountain gorillas worldwide, Uganda has the highest percentage. Over 50% of the world’s mountain gorillas call Uganda home; including the famous Silverback   and Blackback. Tourists stand a 90% likelihood of seeing mountain gorillas on their first trek in Uganda’s highlands.

Where can I find Chimpanzees in Uganda?

Kibale Forest in Kibale National has the highest concentration of Chimps in entire Africa. Chimpanzees can also be found where mountain Gorillas exist like in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The Ngamba Island on L. Victoria was reserved as a Chimpanzees Sanctuary and tourists can visit the island throughout the year to enjoy these playful creatures and have a close experience with them. Other places to see chimpanzees are Budongo Forest and Kyambura Gorge in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

What immunizations are required when traveling to Uganda?

Some of the essential vaccinations required are; Yellow fever and COVID-19 vaccine, Hepatitis A and B, Meningitis, Tetanus, Polio, and Typhoid. Yellow fever and COVID-19 are very essential especially when visiting the Gorillas and Chimps but it is also recommended that you have all these vaccination certificates to avoid any inconveniences during your trip.

Do I need a visa to enter Uganda?

Yes! With effect from March 1, 1999, the Government of Uganda introduced visa requirements for all visitors entering Uganda. However, the following countries are exempted:

• East African Community (EAC) Citizens from Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi and South Sudan.
• Nationals of COMESA countries ( Angola, Comoros, Eritrea, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritius, Madagascar, Rwanda, Seychelles, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe)
• Other countries e.g. Antigua, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Fiji,Gambia, Grenada, Jamaica, Lesotho, Malta, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Solomon Islands, St. Vincent & The Grenadines, Tonga, Vanuatu, Italy (Only diplomatic passports) and Cyprus. #1 Botswana

Even though many would face some difficulties in locating Malawi on a map, given how tiny it is, the country is home to the world-renowned Lake Malawi National Park. This is practically one-third of the country and is the most biodiverse lake in the world.

Most of the land in Namibia is occupied by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Along with that, the country also has 12 national parks and many other areas which are protected. So, if you go there for a safari, you'll have many rich areas to see and explore.
