Guide to Hopkins

Aerial view of Hopkins

Hopkins is an eco-cultural destination on the coast of Stann Creek in Southern Belize. It draws travelers seeking a quiet coastal base from where they can learn about the fascinating Garifuna culture , explore the Southern Barrier Reef and access top jungle attractions.

About Hopkins

tourism in hopkins belize

Located in Southern Belize, Hopkins is a friendly seaside village on the coast of Stann Creek that has a high concentration of Garifuna people . With a laidback Caribbean vibe, Hopkins is known as an eco-cultural hotspot, drawing tourists that are interested in learning about the Garifuna culture and exploring the southern barrier reef and nearby jungle attractions.

Hopkins was established in the 1940s after a nearby area was devastated by a hurricane and everyone from farmers to fishermen relocated there. Fishing and farming used to be the primary source of income there but nowadays it’s tourism since Hopkins currently has several upscale resorts , local restaurants, beach bars, and gift shops.

While Hopkins has grown, the village has retained its coastal charm, welcoming visitors with warm hospitality and a safe environment. You will feel the Garifuna culture at every turn in the village, along with a gateway to a wealth of water and nature activities. It is truly a unique travel destination–a great place to stay for a combined beach and jungle vacation in Belize.

Things to Do in Hopkins

Tobacco Caye Dive Site

As mentioned earlier, if you are interested in cultural tourism, Hopkins is the best spot for learning about Garifuna drumming and dancing. There is a local drum school and many of the hotels can arrange for you to partake in a session. Be warned, it can be addictive.

A major draw for travelers to Hopkins is the accessibility to diving or snorkeling the beautiful Southern Barrier Reef. The South Water Caye Marine Reserve is an excellent spot but you can also go further out to many other cayes and marine reserves. How about fishing? There are plenty of fishermen in Hopkins , with local guides offering everything from reef fishing to deep-sea big game trips.

As for Belize jungle adventures , nearby national parks and nature reserves offer plenty of hiking and wildlife-spotting opportunities. Both the Mayflower Bocawina National Park and the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary are easily accessible from Hopkins. It is also recommended to rent a bicycle to explore the village at your leisure or just relax on the beach at your hotel.

Top Things to Do in Hopkins

  • Explore the Southern Barrier Reef: Dive or snorkel at South Water Caye Marine Reserve
  • Learn about the Garifuna culture through cooking, drumming and dancing lessons
  • Spend the day exploring Mayflower Bocawina or visiting the Placencia Peninsula
  • Hike Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary at night or visit Monkey River
  • Book a day trip to Belize’s top Maya sites

Where to Eat in Hopkins

Ellas Cool Spot Restaurant in Hopkins, Belize

Garifuna food reigns supreme here. In addition to dishes like hudut and cassava bread, seek out bundiga, a simple dish made with bananas or plantains that are grated and cooked in coconut milk with fresh snapper and local seasonings added to the pot while cooking.

Wangla is a local Belizean candy made with sugar and toasted sesame seeds. While not the healthiest of treats, a splurge here and there on holiday is worth it. Creole bread, with its subtle sweetness obtained from the addition of coconut milk, is another must-try while in Belize.

Fresh fruit and seafood are also abundant in Hopkins. If you spend a day out fishing, be sure to bring your catch back to the hotel and let their chef prepare it. Belizeans know seafood and you could spend a week eating fish and never have it prepared the same way twice.

Best Time to V isit Hopkins

Belize's the Garifuna Collective

The optimal time to visit Hopkins is from January to March, which is during Belize’s dry season. You can expect beautiful sunny days, clear blue skies and calm seawaters. Due to the popularity of this time, however, the downside is that rooms and tours are more expensive. Therefore, you may want to consider visiting during the tourism offseason .

As for a specific day that is best to be in Hopkins, this is probably during Garifuna Settlement Day. Every year on November 19, the village comes alive with travelers from all over Belize converging to experience local music, drumming, traditional food, and the annual Garifuna Landing re-enactment ceremony.

Safety and Security Risks in Hopkins

Popular  destinations in Belize , such as Hopkins, are typically just as safe as where you live.

The most common crime is petty theft so normal safety precautions apply. Do not flash large sums of money, do not leave personal belongings unattended, refrain from walking alone late at night (especially if drunk), and lock your doors when you leave your hotel room or Airbnb. Resorts typically provide in-room safes for valuables and have security guards at night.

Most food and beverages are safe to consume in Hopkins. But don’t drink the tap water. If drinking water isn’t included in your stay, which may happen at vacation rentals, bottled water can be bought at supermarkets. Resorts and hotels provide “purified” water for guests so pack a reusable water bottle for tour expeditions and daily use.

Lastly, young women that are traveling alone/ are single may receive unwanted attention from Belizean men. Unfortunately, there is no “right way” to deal with catcalling but often the best response is to ignore it. Sorry.

Getting Here & Around

Hopkins doesn’t have an international airport, so you’ll have to fly into the Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE) near Belize City. From there you can either take a local flight to Dangriga (Hopkins’ nearest town) or catch a taxi/shuttle. Transportation options in Hopkins include walking, biking, and renting a car or golf cart.

Taking a domestic flight to Dangriga from the international airport is the fastest way to get to Hopkins. The flight from Belize City to Dangriga is about 15 minutes and from there, the drive to Hopkins is 30 minutes. Both Belizean airlines : Tropic Air and Maya Island Air can be used, with the flight costing approx. US-$90 each way.

Getting to Hopkins from Belize City by car rental, taxi or shuttle will take about 3 hours. You can rent a car or catch a taxi/shuttle at the airport. Car rentals cost approx US-$75/day and a chartered taxi from Belize City to Hopkins is about US-$200. Shuttles charge a minimum of US-$150/2 persons and about US-$50/person if more people join the trip. Most all-inclusive hotels offer transportation options with their travel packages.

Another option is taking the bus to Hopkins (public transportation). From the international airport, you will have to take a taxi to the Belize City bus terminal (US-$25) where you can take a bus to Hopkins for $5-$10 USD. The entire bus trip will take 6-8 hours.

Hopkins, in Belize, is a small fishing village at the heart of the Garifuna culture. Slow-paced and peaceful, Hopkins is a great place to relax for a few days, enjoy the beach, and discover the Garifuna lifestyle.

The Garifuna is an ethnic group descending from Africans and Indians from the Caribbean, present in Belize and Central America. Their language, food, dance, and music are important aspects of the culture, and staying in Hopkins, you’ll get a glimpse.

Keep on reading to discover all the best things to do in Hopkins, Belize , how to get there, where to eat, and where to stay.

Travel tips: I recommend renting a car in Belize City before heading to Hopkins so you don’t have to book a tour every time you want to visit something . The main roads are great, but note that most places you’ll want to visit will require a 4W to get there . This is the website I use to find the best car rental deals.

If there are 3 things you need to pack for Belize , it would be water shoes , reef-safe sunscreen , and mosquito repellent.

Things to Know Before Visiting Hopkins

There’s only one backpacker in Hopkins village, the Funky Dodo hostel , if you’re solo traveling, I’ll advise staying there as it can get pretty lonely otherwise.

Hopkins Beach is far from being the prettiest in Belize, it can get pretty dirty. If you’re staying at one of the expensive resort, their beach should be nice though.

In my opinion, the only reason to visit Hopkins is if you’re interested in the Garifuna culture . The best would be to be there during a festival or some kind of celebration so you can really enjoy your time in the village. Like on November 19th, during the festivities to celebrate the Garifuna Settlement Day.

Look for Jaguars at Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

River and jungle in Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, Belize

Cockscomb is the perfect place to go hiking. Spotting of jaguars is not uncommon, but it’s still a long shot. Jaguars are not the only animals present in the park, you might see pumas and ocelots as well as several species of reptiles and birds.

A day trip to Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary from Hopkins is a great way to experience the natural beauty of Belize and get up close and personal with its wildlife.

Another great activity to do there is river tubing, sliding along the water, surrounded by a lush jungle.

You can go on your own if you have a car, the drive takes about an hour and a half, and the road can be bumpy, so it’s best to have a 4W . Once there you’ll need to pay an entrance fee to enter the reserve. The fee is around $10 USD per person and goes towards the conservation efforts of the reserve.

You can then hike on the many trails in the reserve and take a refreshing dip in the waterfall pools. There are also guided tours available, where you can learn more about the flora and fauna of the area.

If you don’t a car, it’s recommended to take a tour from Hopkins. The Cockscomb Wildlife Sanctuary tour will take you hiking through the jungle to a hidden cascade and then ride natural river waterslides and i nner tubes down the South Stann Creek River . It’s a full-day trip with everything included – click here to book it.

Make sure to bring insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable walking shoes. It’s also a good idea to bring snacks and water, as there are no restaurants or food vendors inside the reserve.

Hiking to Davis Falls

Davis Falls, a 500-foot-high waterfall, is Belize’s second-highest fall. Located deep inside the rainforest, few make the trip there. All the more reward for you if you decide to visit this gorgeous fall.

If you go on your own, head to the village of Alta Vista where you can hire a guide, from there, you’ll need to drive around 8 more miles on a dirt road. The walk to the falls is about 2 miles and takes around 30 minutes.

Once you reach Davis Falls, you can swim in the waterfall pool, explore the surrounding jungle, and even climb up to the top of the waterfall if you’re feeling adventurous.

If you want to book a tour, you’ll find several operators in Hopkins offering the tour.

Swimming at Saint Herman’s Blue Hole National Park

St Herman's Blue Hole, Belize

This open-air cenote is a great way to spend a couple of hours, swimming in the cool waters. It’s also one of the rare places in Belize you can reach easily; it’s located just off the Hummingbird Highway.

During the low season, you might have the place all to yourself. There’s also a cave only 2 kilometers away, you can enter it without a guide if you don’t want to wander too deep inside the cave. Another option is to hire a guide (50 US per person), to go about 2 km deep inside the cave and then come back to the entrance river-tubing.

Explore the Xunantunich Mayan Ruins

Xunantunich, Maya ruins, San Ignacio, Belize

Xunantunich is an ancient Mayan ruin site located in western Belize, near the border with Guatemala, and if you’re not planning on visiting San Ignacio , you should consider going on a tour to the Xunantunich Mayan Ruins from Hopkins.

It was an important Mayan city during the classical period (AD 250-900) and was abandoned in the 10th century. The site was rediscovered in the 19th century and has been partially restored since then.

The site features several large pyramids , including El Castillo, which is the second tallest structure in Belize. You can climb to the top of El Castillo for a stunning view of the surrounding area. The site also features several plazas, ball courts, and other ceremonial structures.

Most tours from Hopkins will offer a second activity like this Xunantunich and Inland Blue Hole Tour or this Xunantunich Mayan Ruin and Cave Tubing .

Visit the Famed ATM Cave

ATM Cave, Belize

Another great place to visit from Hopkins if you’re not going to San Ignacio is the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave, one of the most known landmarks in Belize .

The ATM Cave was used by the ancient Mayans for both ceremonial and human sacrifice purposes , and many artifacts from the site are still preserved inside the cave. You will have the opportunity to see these artifacts and learn about the Mayan culture and beliefs.

The tour involves hiking, swimming, and wading through water, as well as climbing and squeezing through tight spaces , so be sure you’re up for it.

The number of people allowed daily is limited so make sure to book a tour in advance (you can’t get in without a guide).

If you want something nice on the beach, you can check out Maxim’s . It’s also an excellent place to have a drink.

Note for Solo Females Traveling to Hopkins

The catcalling in Hopkins was the worst I had in my four weeks traveling in Belize. Every 10 meters, there’s a man ready to make a comment on your looks or think it’s okay to say “Hi baby” or things like this. It’s super annoying, at one point I just gave up walking around the village and just headed back to the hotel.

Where to stay in Hopkins, Belize

  • The Funky Dodo Backpackers Hostel: The only hostel in Hopkins, a great place to meet people, good wifi, shared kitchen, near the bus stop;
  • Cosmopolitan Guesthouse Affordable, clean and comfy rooms with a private bathroom, outdoor pool and free bikes.
  • All Seasons Guest House: Nice mid-range guest house with AC, wifi and a kitchen guests can use;
  • Coconut Row: (high-end) beachfront hotel with rooms, bungalows, and apartments, they have a bar/restaurant, AC, and good wifi.

There are cheaper guesthouses in Hopkins but they’re not online, you’ll just have to ask around when you get to the village.

  • Semiti Giffiti – I don’t think you can get any more local than this spot! This place is nothing more than a small shack on the beach with a few tables, and it doesn’t even have a menu. The sweet woman running this spot makes what is fresh or what she feels like that day, although hudut is often on the menu. A traditional dish consisting of fish cooked in a coconut broth served with yams. Definitely order this if she is serving it up.

For an action-packed adventure near Hopkins Belize that you will remember forever, take a tour combining waterfall rappelling and ziplining in one incredible trip.

The day starts with a bang as you zipline for 2.5 miles through the jungle, the longest zipline in the country. After a delicious lunch, it is time to hike through the rainforest for about 20 minutes to Bocawina Falls, where the second part of the tour begins. Rappel down these beautiful falls for 100 feet, and once you reach the bottom, you’ll be rewarded with a refreshing dip in the water.

A tourist rappelling down the side of a waterfall.

Although this may sound challenging, it is more of a family-friendly adventure with smaller thrills but is still a fantastic way to spend the day.

Ziplining in Bocawina

If you still want a bit of adrenaline rush but don’t have time for the whole adventure, then just ziplining is also an option.

A woman ziplining through the middle of a forest.

Take in the views of the incredible Bocawina Rainforest as you soar through the air for 2.5 miles of the course. The course comprises 12 platforms and eight runs, so you have plenty of time to build up your confidence and enjoy the thrill. The longest run is 2300 feet, so it will seem like you are flying forever across the lush Belizian rainforest.

Tours are available throughout the day, so you can pick a time that fits in with your other adventures, and all safety gear is included in the tour price, along with knowledgeable guides.

There are several ways to reach Hopkins, depending on your starting point and preferred mode of transportation.

You can take a shuttle or taxi from the airport to Hopkins, which is about a 2.5-hour drive. I’d recommend just taking a shuttle! You can easily book a shuttle here.

If you prefer to drive, Hopkins is located on the Southern Highway, which runs from Belize City to Punta Gorda. The drive from Belize City to Hopkins takes about 2.5 hours, and the road is well-paved and easy to navigate. You can rent a car from the airport or in Belize City.

Driving on dirt road to things to do in Belize.

Renting a car is what we did, and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s incredibly chill and easy to drive around Belize, and the main roads are maintained. Check here for rental cars.

Another option is to take a bus from Belize City to Dangriga and then transfer to another bus to Hopkins. The bus ride takes about 3-4 hours and is a more affordable option than renting a car or taking a shuttle. But it will also be the slowest and least comfortable option.

Things to do in Hopkins, Belize - Where to Stay and How to Get There

tourism in hopkins belize

Traditionally a quiet, unassuming beach town, Hopkins, in southern Belize has in recent years become a must-visit place for many visitors to the country. There are many reasons for this growth in popularity, from its ideal location to many southern mainland tours, highly rated resorts, and authentic culture, to its proximity to Sittee River.

Hopkins is a small, authentic Central American village that is warm and welcoming to visitors. There is a large percentage of Garifuna settlers here, who have maintained their cultural traditions, such as drumming, which is a must-do in Hopkins . Directly adjacent to Hopkins is the Sittee River and “resort row”. The marina close to the resort area has started to become highly sought after for Belize investors, and there is a great deal of development here. Along Sittee River, boaters will be able to access deep river boating with direct access to the Caribbean Sea.

If the idea of an authentic cultural village, newer to tourism than the more developed, discovered places like Ambergris Caye , Caye, Caulker , and Placencia , appeals to you. And you like the idea of land that looks like it could be Alabama from 100 years ago. Or you like the idea of deep-water boating with direct access to the sea. Then you may want to put Hopkins on your must-visit list. For those that have made this decision, here is a guide to making the most out of your time here.

10 Amazing Things to do in Hopkins, Belize:

1. hike, zipline, and swim in the waterfalls at bocawina national park.

BODY-Recovered-Waterfall-Belize-300x200.jpg

This park is gorgeous, and the world-class hiking you can do will take you to remarkable vistas and waterfall swims. You can do it all in the park and it is a short drive from Hopkins.

2. Take a Monkey River Tour

Monkey River is a very rustic, frozen-in-time village in southern Belize. You can boat down a river on a crocodile sighting hunt, and you can walk through the dense forest and see Monkeys. This is an unforgettable trip for many people. You can see the mangroves and leeward side of the Caribbean, as well as likely see manatees.

3. Visit the Cockscomb Jaguar Preserve

iStock-496565663-Jaguar-Freder-min-300x200.jpg

©Freder/iStock

Cockscomb is one of the only jaguar preserves in the world, and it is a huge, vast piece of land where you can hike through the tropical forests, see untouched Maya ruins, swim in waterfalls, and tube through a natural lazy river (it is long, relaxing, scenic, and fun).

4. Listen to Garifuna Drumming

Garifuna culture is a huge part of the Belize experience, and part of the culture is the history of art, music, and food from African roots. The Garifuna drumming is a hypnotic, exotic experience that can only be had in a handful of places in the western hemisphere. Art and cooking lessons are also offered in the area.

5. A Day in Town

iStock-496478653-Hopkins-Belize-SimonDannhauer-min-300x199.jpg

©SimonDannahauer/iStock

I highly recommend you take a day on your vacation to see the town and area surrounding Hopkins and Sittee River. You can rent a bike very easily and see the entire area—don’t miss seeing the Curve Bar, a world-class marina and a wonderful stop for a rest. You can rent paddleboards or kayaks right in town, I recommend you do this early in the morning as the water tends to be the calmest. At night, there are so many wonderful dining and entertainment options. A few of my favorites are Hamanasi, The Coconut Husk, Chef Rob’s, Driftwood, or the Sandbar at the upscale little shopping area called Caribbean Shores.

6. Maya King Waterfalls

Maya King waterfalls used to be more of a secret, where local families would come, especially on Sundays, to relax, swim, and barbeque. Now it has caught on as an amazing day trip, and there is a large, comfortable pavilion, toilets, a deck overlooking a waterfall that is perfect for yoga, world-class hiking, a wild tubing experience, and more. Don’t miss a peek at the bamboo forest on your way out too.

iStock-132028749-Snorkelling-Belize-DOUGBERRY-min-300x200.jpg

©dougberry/iStock

One of the most popular and memorable experiences you can have in Belize is the world-class snorkeling at the second biggest barrier reef in the world. People come from all over the world to snorkel and scuba dive here. In fact, Belize is one of the few places in the world where you can scuba dive with whale sharks. There are hundreds of cayes off the shore to visit in addition to the reef. The array of snorkel experiences could make up a whole week of a trip, but I recommend you at least book a one-day trip so you can even combine it with some fishing or island hopping.

8. Banana Farm

There aren’t too many places in the world where minutes away you can tour and experience a live, working banana farm. This farm will feel like you went back in time, and is a highly regarded experience for an exotic, authentic look at how many bananas make it into the U.S.

9. Xunantunich and Cave Tubing

iStock-121386211-Xaunantunich-Belize-kddailey-min-300x200.jpg

©kddailey/iStock

One of the most popular and well-regarded Maya ruins in the country is Xunantunich. These are spectacular Maya ruins that you can climb all the way to the top of. This is not for the faint of heart, and contains no handrails. This is located in Cayo, which is a couple hours’ drive from Hopkins, but is worth the trip. You will get to see a lot of the country, and I promise, the drive goes very quickly—the guides often make interesting stops and provide history on the way. The tour is often combined with world-class cave tubing or other experiences, and is a full day that shouldn’t be missed when in Belize.

10. Maya Chocolate Tour

The Maya culture is a big reason people want to come to Belize, and in southern Belize, there is ample experiences to interact with Maya families—even in their homes. You can learn to make chocolate, learn to cook in an open cooking pit, basket weaving, and much more. There is a range of experiences you can pick from, all within a reasonable drive from Hopkins.

Where to stay in Hopkins, Belize

When it comes to staying in Hopkins you can relax at one of the many highly-rated resorts along resort row. Hamanasi is one of the most highly-rated resorts in Central America, and as such, it can be pricey. But if you read the reviews, almost everyone agrees that it is worth it for the experience due to the level of service, wonderful restaurant, and beachfront location with many areas to relax and enjoy nature. Fortunately, there is a range of resorts for every budget here. Jaguar Reef is more moderately priced but with wonderful pools, restaurants, free bikes, and a very central location. You can hardly go wrong with any resort in this area.

Interestingly, most of this part of Sittee River is a scrubbed-clean tourist area—one of the only places in the country that is specifically set aside for tourists, no local housing in the vicinity, and yet it still manages to maintain local charms, with Hopkins just a short bike ride away.

How to get to Hopkins, Belize

How to get to Hopkins, Belize

To get to Hopkins you will fly into Belize’s one and only International Airport, Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport, BZE, in Belize City. Hopkins is about a two-and-a-half to three-hour scenic drive from here. Driving in Belize is straightforward and renting cars in common practice. Other popular methods of transport to Hopkins are to get a shuttle bus from BZE directly to your hotel, or you can take a puddle jumper to Dangriga, which will take you about 15 minutes, and you can get a cab or hotel shuttle to your hotel from there.

Hopkins, Belize – The #1 Culture Destination

Hopkins, Belize - The #1 Culture Destination

Stretching approximately five miles along the charming coast of southern Belize,  Hopkins  is a quaint fishing village that attracts travelers yearning to soak up sea breezes and Belize’s Afro-Caribbean culture. It was founded by Garifuna settlers who migrated from Newtown, a nearby settlement, after it was destroyed by a hurricane. They named the village after Frederick Hopkins, a Catholic Bishop, who sadly perished with two nuns in the blue Caribbean waters, as a cautionary tale to travelers they named the village after him.

Hopkins Belize

Proudly regarded as the #1 cultural destination throughout the country of Belize, Hopkins is home to the beautiful Garifuna community with a population of approximately 1,500 persons.

Garifuna Hopkins Belize

The village’s central location on the coast of southern Belize provides a unique base for visitors to experience both jungle and beach adventures. With just a short drive or boat ride, guests can easily experience  cave tubing  through the ancient Mayan caves and  zip-lining  atop the rainforest on one day then  snorkeling and diving  at the world’s 2nd largest living coral reef the next! Trust us, you’ll be in for a thrilling  Belize adventure .

While many people travel to Belize in search of crystal clear waters and untouched rainforests, Hopkins is an unpretentious place to meet other like-minded travelers, offering an opportunity to indulge in a new philosophy. Visitors of Hopkins often rave about the friendly locals who dive into conversations eagerly sharing information about their culture, history, local customs and way of life.

Named the  “Friendliest Village in Belize”  by Belize First Magazine, Hopkins surely lives up to its title by graciously welcoming people from all walks of life. It’s truly a life changing vacation for many as it creates an appreciation for the blessings life has afforded them since most villagers come from humble beginnings.

Garifuna Hopkins Belize

In the end, while the dancing, singing, drumming, and food all add to your experience, it’s the villagers’ smiling faces and picturesque scenery that will make your trip to Belize one to remember.

  • November 19th is a yearly national holiday in Belize in honor of the Garinagu people, most of whom have descendants living in Hopkins today.
  • Most Hopkins residents speak fluent English, as well as their native tongue (a mixture of Arawak, African, French, English, and Spanish).

Hopkins Village, Belize offers a taste of the traditional Caribbean: Laid back and easy. Gary Peterson gives an overview of this beautiful area. Many travelers and prospective expats seek quiet locations. Places where life remains simple. Hopkins Village, Belize is one such place. A simple fishing village at the end of the road in the south of the country.

Hopkins was unknown until the Central America Hurricane of 1941 hit the coast of Belize. With many villages around the area destroyed, local communities moved to Hopkins.

Garifuna culture in Hopkins Village, Belize

It may be the Garifuna influence you first notice in Hopkins Village. You can find a Garifuna presence all over Belize, but it’s at its strongest here in Hopkins. One of the busiest events in Hopkins is the Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19th each year.

The celebration is all about Garifuna music, dance, food, and art. There’s also a reenactment of the original landing of the Garifuna in local boats.

Staying in Hopkins Village, Belize

For the traveler looking to experience small Caribbean village life, Hopkins Village is a good choice. Great fishing and awesome diving draw guests to resorts and B&Bs, ranging from luxury to basic lodging.

Hidden behind walls and palm trees are a handful of high-end resorts, specializing in water sports. Hamamasi Adventure & Dive Resort , Jaguar Reef , and the Almond Beach Resort & Spa are three of the most popular.

Going out in Hopkins Village, Belize

No matter how long you’re in town for or where you’re staying, you need to check out Chef Rob’s Gourmet Cafe at the Parrot Cove Resort. If you’re lucky enough to be here during the lobster season, Rob’s spiny lobster is a must-eat.

When I first stayed in Hopkins Village, I asked Rob where the best bar in the area was. Hours later he was driving me in his truck to the Curve Bar on the nearby Sittee River.

On the main street in Hopkins Village, you’ll find small shops and restaurants scattered around. Children play in the streets all day and families dance to local tunes well into the evenings.

They say time moves like a turtle in Hopkins Village, Belize

For those seeking this lifestyle, life is good in Hopkins Village. Expats will tell you the cost of living is one of the lowest in Belize, and that land is cheaper than many other coastal communities.

Most expats build their homes along the road south from the village down to the Sittee River. Over the past few years, there has been an increase in home construction. But it’s a low-key construction, where the new homes are smaller more personal. Not the larger, mega-homes for the tourist rental market that are going up elsewhere.

Hopkins Village always has been and remains today, a breath of fresh air in Belize.

Community-Based Tourism in Hopkins Belize

  • Post author: Gary Funa
  • Post published: 2024-01-05
  • Post category: Hopkins

Hopkins Belize is an idyllic coastal village situated to the south of Dangriga in Stan Creek district and captures Belize’s natural environment with beach and rainforest experiences. Residents here uphold Garifuna culture through drumming and dancing performances and provide visitors with an authentic Belizean experience.

Hamanasi Ecoadventure Resort in Hopkins provides guests with an opportunity to interact with locals while experiencing all that Hopkins and its environs have to offer.

Community-Based Tourism

Hopkins is a coastal town situated between wetlands and the Caribbean Sea with a vibrant cultural legacy, popular tourist spots in Belize, and home to an ever-increasing expatriate community. Hopkins’ idyllic natural ambience draws travelers from around the globe who come seeking beach and rainforest experiences; additionally, it has seen an increasing number of expat residents move in.

The town of Hopkins offers the ideal combination of natural scenery and vibrant traditional cultures to make it an excellent sustainable tourism destination. Furthermore, its location at Central America’s easternmost corner makes it an excellent starting point for exploring Central America’s rich biodiversity – tropical rainforests, second largest coral reef in the world, pristine savannas…

Community-based tourism not only safeguards Hopkins’ natural environment, but it also contributes to its economic development. Tourism accounts for the bulk of Hopkins’ economy; providing an opportunity for local villagers to diversify their incomes and strengthen economic resilience – this was one of the primary motivations behind the opening of local tour and accommodation establishments.

Hopkins offers an abundance of resorts, inns, and guest houses ; additionally, there are also indigenous homestay programs to immerse visitors into local culture while experiencing genuine hospitality from host families. Furthermore, these homestays are run by community enterprises which focus on environmental sustainability and social responsibility.

Hopkins village residents have also embraced ecotourism by creating activities designed to attract nature enthusiasts and adventurers, such as kayak tours, jungle hikes led by local experts, wildlife walks led by experts from their village and more. Furthermore, each tour comes complete with an educational component designed to educate tourists on the biodiversity of Hopkins.

Volunteer opportunities exist in Belize that focus on protecting its natural habitat, such as rainforest and marine conservation. Working alongside organizations that strive to strike an equilibrium between nature and humans in this rapidly developing nation are also available to those wanting to get more hands-on with conservation efforts.

Volunteers can play an essential role in monitoring Belize’s iconic reef system by joining the Reef Watch Institute. This highly respected organization relies heavily on volunteer support in conducting critical scientific research and providing data which help protect and conserve this invaluable natural resource for future generations.

Sustainable Tourism Initiatives

Coastal Hopkins is an eco-cultural hotspot that attracts travelers searching for a quiet beach base from which they can discover Garifuna culture, the Southern Barrier Reef and jungle attractions. Tourism is the primary economic driver in Coastal Hopkins village; residents take great pride in upholding both cultural traditions and nature for future generations – evident by daily drumming and dancing performances, both designated UNESCO Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Travelers can also sample traditional Garifuna cuisine like hudut and cassava bread from many restaurants throughout.

Volunteer opportunities to assist local communities with their conservation efforts can be found throughout both rainforest and marine settings, from wildlife research to maintaining marine sanctuaries. Travellers looking for an authentic cultural experience may want to enroll in Garifuna dance and drum lessons – although beware, as these may become addictive!

As part of Hopkins’ sustainable tourism industry, another way to support it is through buying local goods and services. This can include purchasing from boutiques or restaurants within Hopkins’ vicinity as well as visiting locally run ethically sourced businesses like Hamanasi’s Nice Cream Premium Ice Cream Shop; which employs only women from the local community while sourcing ingredients from nearby farms.

While some residents of their villages resent tourism’s presence in their lives, others have come to accept it and use tourism-driven small business initiatives for greater financial independence. Some have even established sustainable diving schools and guides – providing more sustainable forms of diving to support local dive centers.

Hopkins boasts many eco-conscious businesses that are flourishing, including local farmers who use indigenous fruits, vegetables and spices in their produce. Furthermore, the community exhibits a strong recycling culture as evidenced by trash collection efforts and reuse of materials at local shops and restaurants. Furthermore, Belize Audubon Society plays an active role in maintaining balance between nature and humans within this vibrant nation; their team work tirelessly to ensure tourism benefits match a sense of responsibility to preserve natural resources and habitats.

Engaging with Local Communities

Hopkins is an inviting seaside village just south of Dangriga in the Stan Creek District. Famous for its Garifuna culture and proximity to marine and jungle attractions, Hopkins attracts travelers looking for a laidback Caribbean atmosphere from which they can explore Belize’s vast biodiversity and unique Garifuna heritage.

Visitors to Belize have many ways they can contribute to local communities’ development by making donations or supporting community projects with time or money, including initiatives designed to improve education, watershed management and wildlife conservation. Furthermore, the Belize Audubon Society works towards maintaining balance between nature and humanity by educating children on environmental matters while improving coastal habitats.

Help out by volunteering in one of Belize’s wildlife reserves like Cockscomb Jaguar Reserve. Here, you’ll see rare wildcats both land and water while contributing to protecting their natural habitat. Alternatively, join wildlife tours like Sittee River Bird Kayak Tour or Cockscomb Wildlife Sanctuary Guided Kayak Tour to gain more knowledge about its biodiversity and impact on local economies.

Hopkins locals value sustainability highly and strive to offer visitors authentic experiences that respect both the natural environment and Garifuna culture. Restaurants such as Love on the Rocks and Ella’s Cool Spot use locally sourced ingredients while featuring Garifuna music – you can sample traditional dishes like Hudut (fish cooked in coconut broth), Conch Soup Darasa Tamale s and Cassava Pudding at these eateries.

Recent research assessed the actual and perceived economic, social, and other effects of tourism on two villages – Laguna in inland California and Hopkins village along the Californian coastline – using multiple methodologies including semi-structured interviews with residents, observations, secondary sources, etc. While residents see advantages from tourism they are struggling to gain financial independence and diversify their livelihood due to increasing cash-based market economies and competition with outsiders for jobs and resources. More education and awareness on sustainable tourism benefits is therefore required.

Getting There

Hopkins Belize offers the perfect peaceful escape where land and sea combine to form a cozy Garifuna village with warm hospitality, making for the ideal environment to rejuvenate. Reconnecting with nature through activities like jungle river canoe trips and tropical birding excursions is the key to enjoying this coastal community, not to mention learning more about Garifuna culture through drumming classes or natural remedy production from local herbalists.

Reaching Hopkins Belize is simple and hassle-free via Tropic Air or Maya Island Air flights from Belize City, taking only approximately 30 minutes and often included with all-inclusive hotel packages. Alternatively, rent a car at Belize International Airport, take a taxi/shuttle bus ride directly from Dangriga into Hopkins or use public transit systems such as public buses for transport services between Dangriga and Hopkins.

Hopkins is a small coastal town that was recently recognized as “Friendliest Village in Belize.” Known for its rustic beach vibe and many mom and pop restaurants and shops, Hopkins draws eco-travelers, families seeking relaxation in a Caribbean setting as well as eco-tourists interested in discovering its South Barrier Reef or jungle attractions. Over 1000 residents currently call Hopkins their home.

Hopkins-area businesses take full advantage of the tourism boom and strive to live sustainably. This commitment can especially be seen at boutique resorts and hotels that take an eco-friendly approach, offering holistic experiences while celebrating regional heritage.

Participating in Hopkins community initiatives is an excellent way to experience its culture first-hand and contribute to local economies. There are a range of volunteer opportunities in Hopkins ranging from rainforest conservation and marine preservation, as well as working with the local community on tourism development initiatives. These projects form an essential part of Belize’s commitment to biodiversity preservation and landscape sustainability for future generations; whether that means helping protect coral reef ecosystems at Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Reserve, tracking jaguars at Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Reserve, or tracking jaguars at Cockscomb Basin Jaguar Reserve; your efforts will make an impactful difference both locally and beyond!

10 Best Places To Visit In Belize In 2024

B elize is a magnificent country tucked between Mexico and Guatemala, with a long stretch of coastline along the Caribbean Sea. We spent a week in Belize during our Central America backpacking trip and could’ve easily stayed much longer!

I was blown away by the kindness of the local people and their vibrant energy. Not to mention the stunning beaches and relaxed island lifestyles. I loved nature and wildlife and just how welcoming Belize felt.

Belize is not only a perfect destination to visit on its own and spend a week or two exploring but you could also easily combine it with a longer trip from Mexico to Guatemala for example, thanks to its relatively small size.

With so many incredible places to visit in Belize, this list will give you all of the best options to choose the perfect destinations for you.

Best Places To Visit In Belize

Belize may be a small country but there are so many great places in this beautiful country.

Here are the top 10 best places to visit in Belize.

1 – Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker is a small island with a very relaxed and laid-back vibe . In fact, it is more correct to describe it as 2 islands since it was hit by a hurricane in 1961 and torn in two. Naturally, the locals took this in their stride and this narrow channel of sea between the 2 islands is now named ‘The Split’.

The Split is a popular place to hang out and enjoy the beautiful clear waters. There is a great beach bar by the split called the Lazy Lizard, where I highly recommend spending an afternoon.

Caye Caulker is well known for being a backpacker hub , especially around the main town. You will find plenty of hostels and bars to meet fellow travelers. We loved the beachside coffee shack called Ice & Beans. They do great coffee and have hammocks on the beach so you can swing while you sip.

If you are looking for something a little more luxurious, on the other side of The Split you will find more resor t s and hotels that are geared more toward families visiting Belize with kids .

2 – Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye is one of the best Caribbean islands for families . The largest of the Belizean islands, and one of the most popular places to visit in Belize, Ambergris Caye is around 25 miles long but no wider than 1 mile .

The main town is San Pedro, towards the south of the island. There are a lot of things to do in San Pedro , as it is a bustling hub with a much more authentic feel than Caye Caulker.

In this town, you will find more local people going about their day-to-day lives than you will tourists.

We stayed at the Sandbar Beachfront Hostel and this was one of the best hostels we found in Central America . Located right on the beach they have a private pier over the water, a great pool and the restaurant makes the best pizzas!

If you head further north along Ambergris Caye you will find many quiet and stunning beaches with breathtaking turquoise waters. From the shores of the island, you can even see the Barrier Reef that runs alongside Belize.

3 – San Ignacio

Found just a short drive from the Belize-Guatemala border is the town of San Ignacio. Located in far western Belize , it is often used as a stopover by travelers heading from one country to the other. But the town of San Ignacio actually has an awful lot to offer.

San Ignacio is a small town and can be explored on foot , you can take a stroll along the river or head to the big local market for some fresh fruit or homemade local delicacies.

San Ignacio has a lot to do , and is a great place to base yourself if you want to visit the ATM Cave (Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave) or explore some of the other places mentioned on this list such as Caracol or Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve.

San Ignacio is also home to its very own Mayan Ruins site called Cahal Pech .

Cahal Pech is only $5 USD to enter and when we visited we had the entire site to ourselves for hours! You are even allowed to climb the Pyramids still at this site.

If you are heading from Belize to Guatemala, it is worth spending a couple of days in San Ignacio before moving on to Guatemala .

ALSO READ: WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE VISITING GUATEMALA WITH KIDS

4 – Hopkins

Hopkins is a quiet and peaceful beach village located in the south of the country. It is steadily growing in popularity among travelers but this south Belize gem still maintains its authentic nature, food and culture . This is what visitors love most about Hopkins.

You can enjoy the quiet, pristine beaches in peace and get a real experience of the way of life in this area. One of the most special things to do while in Hopkins is experience the Garifuna drumming . An art that is only practiced in a handful of places still, so it is not to be missed.

The Garifuna people are of mixed Afro-Caribbean descent. They immigrated from the island of Saint Vincent to Belize, settling primarily in the coastal areas, like Hopkins, where Garifuna culture is a celebrated part of the visitor experience.

Hopkins is also the best place to stay if you want to explore the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary and Jaguar Reserve . This is one of the only Jaguar reserves in the world.

You can join a tour to hike through the reserve , swimming in beautiful waterfalls as you keep your eyes peeled for a rare glimpse of a Jaguar.

5 – Belize City

If you are flying directly to Belize then you will be landing in Belize City as this is the only international airport in the country . It then makes sense that you may want to spend a day or two exploring the country’s capital city.

There is a surprising amount of colonial history and architecture to be found throughout the city and the best way to experience it all is on a guided tour of the city . This way you will have a local guide who can explain more about what you are seeing as well as advising on the safe areas to stick to around the city.

Some more great spots to have on your itinerary in Belize City are the government buildings, St John’s Cathedral and the Museum of Belize.

Spend a day exploring these sites before you head out to the Cayes and you will really be able to appreciate the contrast between city and island life.

6 – The Blue Hole

Perhaps one of the most iconic and well-known places to visit in Belize is the magnificent Blue Hole . This incredibly unique sinkhole is a natural wonder that is located around 43 miles off the coast of Belize.

It is possible to experience the Blue Hole by boat or from above in a helicopter or small plane. Boat trips are best from Ambergris Caye as this is closer to the hole and the journey will be 3-4 hours each way.

Flights also leave from the small airstrip in San Pedro each day to take tourists on an hour-long flight over the hole .

It is also known to be one of the most sought-after dive sites in the world , drawing experienced divers from far and wide to experience its mysterious depths.

7 – Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley

Belize is located right next to the second-largest barrier reef in the world . If you are an ocean lover then no trip to Belize should be complete without taking a diving or snorkeling trip out to Hol Chan Marine Reserve on the Belize Barrier Reef.

The reef is a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising seven protected areas, including the Blue Hole, Hol Chan Marine Reserve, and stretching as far south as the South Water Caye Marine Reserve and Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve, located off the shores of Placencia.

We did a combination of snorkeling and diving and were blown away. Hol Chan Marine Reserve is home to hundreds of colorful fish, rays and sea turtles and the water visibility is great.

Shark Ray Alley is an incredible spot that is now home to hundreds of friendly nurse sharks and rays. You can jump right in and swim amongst them. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. These waters are also home to Manatees .

We were lucky enough to see one and they are much larger than we expected.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve can be accessed by boat from either Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker .

8 – Caracol Mayan Ruins

Belize is known for its impressive Mayan ruins. The ancient Mayan archeological site of Caracol is pretty special.

It’s no secret that there are hundreds of Maya sites in Belize , as well as sprinkled across Mexico and Guatemala. While there are a few more famous than Caracol, like Tikal in Guatemala and Chichén Itzá in Mexico, Caracol is seriously underrated.

This impressive site is buried deep within the Belize jungles, 2 hours from the nearest town and no public transport goes there. Making this one of the most off-the-beaten-path places to visit in Belize.

You will need to join a tour or rent a 4×4 to get there as there is an hour of driving off road before you reach the site.

Caracol was once one of the major Maya hubs, covering an area of 55 square miles. Now the main pyramids have been uncovered and tower over the jungle.

9 – Placencia

Placencia is the most southern beach destination on this list, located a little further south along the coast from Hopkins.

This sleepy fishing village is slowly becoming a favorite among travelers thanks to its small and charming main street, lack of traffic and incredible beaches.

Placencia is the name of the village that sits at the end of the 16 mile-long Placencia Peninsula. The narrow strip of land is only half a mile wide at its widest point making it very much feel like a remote caye.

Luckily for us, it has all the vibes of a gorgeous caye but we can drive there. It is still largely undeveloped and mostly inhabited by locals. You will find no high rises here.

Each morning the local fishermen still head out in their boats around the peninsula and during the summer months, this is an ideal spot to head out on a snorkeling tour find Whale sharks.

10 – Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve

The Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve is a unique landscape in Belize. You won’t find the iconic pine trees in the other jungles across the country.

This entrance to the reserve is around a 45-minute drive from San Ignacio . It is possible to drive yourself however the roads inside the reserve can get treacherous after rainfall. The best way to visit the pine forest reserve is on a guided tour .

A tour can take you to multiple spots in a day so you make the most out of your time there. The reserve is home to beautiful towering waterfalls as well as smaller rock pools like Rio On Pools which are perfect for swimming.

It is also where you can find the impressive Rio Frio cave . An enormous cave that leads to a huge underground river system. It is well worth a trip to this wonderful nature spot if you enjoy time in the great outdoors.

BOOK A TOUR TO RIO ON POOLS, RIO FRIO CAVE, AND THE CARACOL MAYAN RUINS

If you want beaches but peace and quiet then you should stay along the beaches in the south of the country. If you are looking to experience the jungles and Mayan ruins then you should stay in San Ignacio.

The jungles around San Ignacio are also home to some beautiful eco-lodges that are great for a peaceful escape.

How long do you need in Belize?

I would recommend spending no less than one week in Belize to get the most out of your time there.

Ten days or more would be the ideal amount of time if you want to experience the islands and the coastal area along the mainland, as well as see the Mayan ruins and the jungles in western Belize.

If you have less than a week then I recommend spending your time on the Cayes and not moving around too much.

When is the best time of year to visit Belize?

The best time to visit Belize is during the dry season from January to May. This is when you will have the best temperatures and the least rainfall.

From August to December there is a low risk of hurricanes so always check before you travel.

Is Belize safe to visit?

Belize is generally known to be a safe country for tourists to visit. Belize City has a bit of a reputation for being unsafe in certain areas but crime is rarely directed towards tourists. If in doubt there are plenty of great group tours you can join to explore the city with a local who knows the area.

Regardless of where you visit, it is always best to leave your valuables at home and not wander around alone at night time.

Is Belize cheap or expensive?

Belize is not typically a budget travel destination. It is possible to find cheaper hostel beds, take public buses and eat street food. However, there are far more luxury resorts and activities in Belize which are usually pretty expensive.

A Texas woman living in Belize has died after being hit in the head by a conch shell during a fight that broke out when her husband crashed their golf cart into a bar in the Caribbean country, officials said.

Jennifer Lynn Griffith, 46, was riding with husband Maynor Rene Ancona, 41, who was driving Saturday morning in San Pedro, a town in Ambergis Caye that Madonna made famous with “Las Isla Bonita,” Channel 5 Belize reported .

He crashed the cart into the El Norte Bar, leading to a fight between the couple and the booze joint’s employees, police Commissioner Chester Williams told the news outlet.

At one point during the brawl, someone threw a conch shell at Griffith, striking her in the head, according to the top cop, who said she suffered a concussion.

“She went to the polyclinic with the police and she refused medical treatment and self-discharged herself from the clinic and went home,” Williams said.

“The next morning, she seemingly was having pain and she went back to the clinic where she succumbed [to her death],” he said. “At this time, we are not able to say what the cause of death is — if she died as a result of the conch shell or as a result of the accident.”

An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death, Williams said, adding that it was not immediately clear if alcohol was involved in the incident.

When asked whether a bar employee had thrown the conch shell, he said he was unsure, but added that it was “one of the persons involved in the brawl.”

Williams also said that after Griffith left the San Pedro Polyclinic, “she had indicated to the police that she didn’t want anything against those individuals.”

Police have reportedly detained several people, who will “at the very least” be charged with disorderly conduct, according to the news outlet.

Griffith was originally from Texas and had been living on Ambergis Caye for several years, local news outlet lovefm.com reported .
