How to get around Seoul

Feb 10, 2024 • 8 min read

seoul metro tourist pass

With efficient public transport and plenty of pedestrianized areas, Seoul is refreshingly easy to explore © Chalamkhav / Shutterstock

Seoul's public transport network is amongst the best in the world – clean, punctual and committed to accessibility – and getting around the capital of South Korea is now smoother than ever thanks to several smartphone apps that provide real-time information.

KakaoMap  is available in English and can plan your journey from door to door, covering everything from when the next bus will come to the best train car to board, depending on where you're disembarking. And Seoul's subway trains and buses have free wi-fi, so you can keep track of your journey online, even without a SIM card.

From buses and bicycles to taxis and trains, here's the insider scoop on the best ways to get around Seoul .

A transport pass brings convenience and savings

Seoul's buses and trains are operated by several different companies, but you can pay for journeys with all operators with a transport pass . There are three to choose from: NAMANE, T-money and Cashbee.

You can get a physical NAMANE card from a kiosk at transport hubs or use a digital one via the app. Top it up and use it across public transport, as well as in some retailers. T-money and Cashbee cards can be purchased at convenience stores as well as transport hubs. Just top them up to use on any public transport and affiliated retailers – keep in mind that T-money is more widely accepted in stores than Cashbee.

It is possible to buy a single-ride ticket at the station each time or pay in cash on the bus, but transport cards can be used in taxis, subways and buses across the country, and T-money can be purchased in conjunction with other special deals for foreign tourists.

Because many of the cards have a special design or theme (such as pictures of K-pop group BTS), many people choose to keep the card as a souvenir, but they can be refunded for the original price at Incheon International Airport when you leave the country.

Passengers on the Seoul Metro

The metro is the fastest and most affordable way to get around Seoul

With 22 subway lines making 302 stops across the city, the Seoul Metro is a highly efficient way to get around the city. Download the Metro app for iPhone or Android , and you'll find the entire process quite straightforward. Each station has English-language signs, and stops are announced in Korean, English, Chinese and Japanese.

Fares start at ₩1400 per ride with a transport pass, and you're allowed up to four transfers to another subway line or bus for free within 30 minutes. Platform screens detail what metros are due to arrive and depart, and exit signs detail what major landmarks are next to each one.

If you're changing between one subway line and another, you generally don't tap out to make transfers. The subway tends to stop running from midnight to 5:30am, but times vary by line – check the app for your journey.

Know your subway etiquette

Etiquette is important on Seoul's subway. Most people line up outside the train doors and enter in an orderly manner. Train cars usually have reserved seats for the elderly, pregnant passengers and travelers with disabilities. Visitors sometimes use these seats when they are available, but it's considered good manners to leave these seats empty for those in need.

Passengers waiting for buses in Seoul

Seoul's buses can take you anywhere in the city

Buses may take a little longer than the metro, but they can be a great option if you're traveling to a more residential area or if your subway route requires more than one transfer.

Bus stops generally show routes in both Korean and English and have a digital screen that shows when the next bus arrives, as well as indicating how crowded the bus is. The seat availability signage is only in Korean, but the "comfortable" sign is usually white, the "average" sign is yellow, and the "busy" sign is red. Bus stop signs also give weather and air quality information, and some bus stops even have seats that warm up in colder weather.

Seoul has five types of buses that are color-coded to indicate their purpose. Green and blue buses cover cross-town routes, and an adult ticket costs ₩1500. The small green local buses known as  maeul are about half the size of the regular green buses, and they stick to just one neighborhood or district – the fare is ₩1200. Red buses travel between Seoul and outer regions and cost ₩3000. The yellow buses, or circulator buses, loop around popular tourist destinations such as Namsan and Myeongdong and cost ₩1400.

You are allowed up to four transfers either to the subway or another bus for free within 30 minutes. Typically, you tap in at the front door when you enter the bus and tap out at the back door when you exit. Remember to tap out to secure your free transfers and discounts. The queuing system is pretty loose for the bus. During rush hour, passengers often enter through the back door or exit through the front door. However, some bus drivers frown upon this practice.

Night buses are indicated by an N before the number, and the fare is ₩2500. The etiquette of avoiding seats for the elderly, pregnant and travelers with disabilities does not apply like it does on the subway, but you'll be expected to give up your seat if someone needs it.

View of a fortress wall in the center of a city

Hail a taxi for late-night journeys

Seoul cabs come in many different shapes and sizes; the most common are mid-size sedans in orange or silver that take a maximum of four passengers. Cabs charge a base fare of ₩4800, plus increments of ₩100 for every eighth of a mile – the incremental price increases a little between 10pm and 4am. You can pay with a credit card, cash or transport card.

Korean ride-hailing apps do exist, but you might need a valid Korean phone number to use them. If you have a local number, download Kakao T , a popular app that's available in English. Cabs operated by International Taxi Service can be booked on the website or via phone or email, but reservations are required 24 hours in advance. Otherwise, you can hail cabs on the street.

Even if you are confident in your ability to pronounce your destination, it's best to show a cab driver the name of your destination written in Korean because some places have similar names, such as Sinchon Station and Sincheon Station. If you need to explain your route in detail to your driver, you can call a free interpretation hotline – the number is usually indicated on a sticker on the window side of a cab, but if you don't see it, try using the  BBB  app – it's staffed by volunteers and available on both Apple and Android.

Be aware that many cab drivers are reluctant to take on short journeys and sometimes reject passengers for this reason. Locals often get in and shut the door before telling the driver which way they're going to get around this problem.

Cyclists ride along a paved path beside a river

See the city up close on a bike

Seoul has a handful of bike-share schemes, but the best-known and most accessible to non-Koreans is Ttareungi, with its distinctive white and green bicycles. Visitors should create an account online and download the Seoul Bike app to use the system. You can purchase hourly, daily or yearly passes, and bicycles can be rented at one station and returned at another.

There are some useful dedicated cycle paths – including the Hangang River Cycling Trail , which follows the Han River right across the city – but many roads do not have a separate bike path, and cyclists often have to share the sidewalk with pedestrians. Cyclists are  required to dismount and walk across pedestrian crosswalks – although this is not vigorously enforced, ignoring it may make you liable in the event of an accident.

Driving in Seoul is not recommended

Traffic in Seoul can be gridlocked, and parking is cutthroat, even by most city standards. Although you can rent a car with an international driver's license, we don't recommend it for a short-term visit.

People wander in the walking street of the Myeong-dong shopping and entertainment district at night

Walking is often the best option

Seoul is an incredibly dense city, with shops, restaurants and cultural sights often packed tightly together, so you can see a lot more on foot. A walk of only 1.3km (0.9 miles) will take you from Gyeongbokgung Palace (the largest of the capital's five grand palaces) to Changdeokgung Palace (often considered the most beautiful of the five). Between these two sights, there are dozens of lesser-known attractions and cafes, such as the Arario Museum , Cafe Onion and Seoul Museum of Craft Art, that you'd miss if you took a cab, bus or train.

Accessible transportation in Seoul

With audio and visual information systems, elevators, Braille tiles, accessible turnstiles and bathrooms at almost all subway stations across the city, Seoul Metro is considered "mostly accessible" by organizations such as WheelchairTravel.org . If the elevators aren't working, approach an attendant at the station to help you with a wheelchair lift to the train platform. Priority seating is available for travelers with disabilities, and train cars with wheelchair spaces are marked with a large green wheelchair sign on the floor.

Priority seating is also available on all of Seoul's buses, almost all of which have a ramp or a floor that can be lowered for those with mobility needs. For more information about accessible sightseeing and calling wheelchair-accessible taxis, check out Seoul Danurim , an accessible travel organization. For more information on accessible travel, see Lonely Planet's free accessible travel resources .

  • Each ticket for the bus and subway is 100 won cheaper than when buying individual tickets
  • Saves time . Once in a while you need to top up your card instead of buying a ticket for each ride.

This free transfer only counts if you get onto another bus or metro within 30 minutes after leaving the previous one. Between 9 PM and 7 AM, it is within 1 hour.

There are different types of transportation cards available to buy, but for most travelers getting a simple T Money Card will be good enough.

Seoul Public Transportion ticket

A T Money Card is a rechargeable card used to pay transportation fees and it can be used on all public transportation in Korea including buses, subways and taxis. A T Money Card can be purchase online and be picked up at Incheon Airport upon arrival, delivered to your home or bought at any convenience store (cash only) and tourist information centers . The price of the card is between 2500 and 4000 krw. The price depends on the design which is on the card. The fare for the subway using the T Money card on the subway is as follows:

Note: when buying a T Money card for children under 19, make sure to mention this to the sales person.

An additional fee is charged for the Airport Railroad Line and the Sinbundang Line. After 10 kilometers, an additional fee of 100 won is charged for every additional 5 kilometers.

1.1 Buy T Money Card Online

Listed below are different T Money Cards that can be purchased online. Check what package suits your needs and where the pick up point is located.

1.2 Korea Tour Card T Money

If you are planning on doing a lot of shopping while in Seoul, it might be worth buying the special Korea Tour Card from T Money. This card is exclusive for foreign travelers and it offers additional discounts at department stores and touristic attractions. This card costs 4000 krw and can be purchased at convenience store in major tourist areas, Incheon Airport Railway Travel Center and Seoul Metro vending machines. The card works just like a regular T Money card. More info here.

1.3 T Money Refund

If you have money left on your T Money card and want to get a refund you can go to any convenience store and ask for a remaining balance refund. This is only possible if the balance is between 500 krw or 20 000 krw. If you balance is over 20 000 krw you need to go to the Smart Card Office ( address: 10th Floor, Seoul City Tower #581, Namdaemunro 5ga, Jong-gu, Seou, 100-741). 500 krw is charged when asking for a refund.

An M Pass is a Seoul subway pass for tourist traveling multiple days (also valid in Jeju). The pass offers 20 rides a day from the moment the pass is activated. Normally tourist won’t take 20 rides a day but if you need to be all over the city, this pass might be worth it. The pass can be bought in Incheon Airport, Seoul Station and Myeongdong Tourist Information Center. More info here.

The Discover Seoul Pass is a special pass for tourist coming to Seoul. The pass is a T Money card and gives instant free access to over 35 attractions. Additionally, the card offers discounts for certain big department stores and performances in Seoul. If you are planning visiting major sites and attractions, this pass is really worth it. The DSP can be purchase online for Incheon airport pick up or in major tourist information centers in Seoul. The passes bought online are 5% cheaper then on location purchases. More info here.

Note: the special BTS limited edition Discover Seoul Pass does not have the T Money function.

To use the DSP as a T Money card it first has to be topped up. The card can be topped up in the subway and convenience stores. Initially there is no credit on the card. When the 24/48/72 hours of the card run out, you can continue to use the card as a transportation card.

Instead of buying a transportation card, it is also possible to purchase individual tickets on the Seoul public transport like bus or subway. This can only be done using cash and it has a couple of disadvantages. Namely, each ride is 100 won more expensive than when using a card and when transferring from bus to subway an additional ticket has to be purchased.

4.1 Pay By Cash In Subway

Single journey tickets can be bought at the vending machines located in each subway station. The instructions on the machine are in English and are very straightforward. Namely: pick the English menu, select ‘Single Journey Ticket’, pick your destination, select the amount of passengers, insert cash into the machine.

When purchasing a single journey ticket a 500 krw deposit is required. You can get back the deposit upon arrival at the destination when returning the card.

4.2 Pay By Cash In Bus

Upon entering the bus, next to the driver there will be a money box which you can put your cash money in. Try to pay the exact amount in coins or bills and avoid paying with bills over 10 000 krw as you will receive your change in 100 krw coins.

If you are permanently living in Korea and have a Korean bank account, you can go to your bank and get a bank card which is both a debit card and T money card. This means you won’t need to recharge your transportation card and you get charged once a month. The money gets taken automatically from your bank account. This card can be used on all public transportation methods in the whole country including on the bus, subway and taxi. The transportation fare using a bank card is the same as when using a T Money Card.

Seoul Public Transport

Listed below is everything you need to know about using the Seoul public transport system. It includes how to use the metro, buses, city tour buses, taxis and city bike.

The metro or subway is a convenient type of Seoul public transport as its easy to use and fast. You can get from one side of the city to the other in less than an hour. The total distance of all the subway lines in Seoul is 287 km, with 70% of this running underground. On the Seoul subway network there are over 22 subway lines, 291 subway stations and it connects Seoul, Incheon, the Gyeonggi and Chungnam province. The subway is by far the most convenient way for getting around Seoul. An English Seoul subway map can be found here .

Each subway line has its own colour and name in both Korean and English. In all subway stations and inside the Seoul metro all maps, signs and announcements will be both in English and Korean. On popular lines these will also be in Chinese and Japanese.

seoul subway map

Note: bikes can be brought on the subway (except for the Sinbundang line) but only in the last carriages and on weekends. Small pets are allowed on the subway, only if they can be carried in a bag or stroller.

1.1 Seoul Subway Operating Hours

The Seoul subway operation hours are from 5:30 to 24:00, but this differs from line to line. The estimated travel time between two stations in central Seoul is 2-3 minutes and the time it takes to transfer in between 2 lines is usually around 3 minutes. Most trains come every 5 minutes, but again, this differs from line to line.

seoul subway pass for tourist

1.1 Seoul Subway Fare

The starting price for a regular subway ticket using a T Money card is 1250 krw for the first 10 kilometers. For every 5 kilometers and additional charge of 100 krw will be added. After 50 kilometers an additional charge of 100 krw will be charged per 8 kilometers.

The Incheon airport railroad line and Sinbundang line are the only lines that are more expensive than the other lines.

Using the Seoul bus is very convenient, but for first timers to Seoul, taking the bus is more difficult than taking the subway. Most main bus routes have signs in both English and Korea but there are quite a few buses and bus stops that don’t. Many bus drivers in Seoul speak no or little English.

There are 8 types of buses running in Seoul and each one has a different colour. Namely the blue, green, yellow, red, long distance, town, airport and midnight bus. Each bus has a different fare and operation frequency.

seoul bus app

1.1 Seoul Bus Fare

The most common type of bus, the blue and green one have a starting fee of 1200 krw for an adult. After the first 10 kilometers you will be charged an additional 100 krw per 5 kilometers. Children under the age of 6 ride the bus for free if they are accompanied by a guardian (maximum 3 children).

If you want to get somewhere fast and you don’t mind paying a bit extra, than getting a taxi is another good option, especially when traveling in group. Taxis in Seoul are rather inexpensive compared to other countries in the world and they are easy to find. Just a 5 minutes wait at the side of the pavement and you’ll get a taxi. Standard taxis can fit up to 4 people. Tip : if you are planning on using taxis regularly, install Kakao Taxi App. On the app you can request a taxi and see the ratings of the driver.

Note: during peak hours it is not recommended to take a taxi, getting there by subway will be way faster as you can be stuck for hours.

3.1 Types Of Seoul Taxis

There are 5 different types of taxis, each with a different colour. The standard taxis are the orange, white, grey and sky blue taxis. These are mid-sized sedans and are the cheapest ones to take. The sky blue taxi is an electronic taxi which was only introduced earlier this year. Deluxe taxis are black and more comfortable than regular taxis, they are also more expensive. The black jumbo taxis can accommodate up to 10 passengers, these are more expensive, but usually due to the size of the group it works out cheaper per person. International taxis are orange but have a sign on the top of their taxi saying ‘international taxi’. The drivers of these taxis can speak a foreign language like English or Japanese. These taxis are more expensive than regular taxis.

If you are going to or coming from the airport it is recommended to book a taxi online, you can leave the time and pick up address when booking. This is more convenient than waiting at the side of the street and certain taxis won’t be willing to take you to the airport as then they have to drive all the way back. Book a taxi here.

transportation in seoul

3.2 Seoul Taxi Fare

The fare depends on the distance and the type of taxi you’ll be taking. Listed below are the fees for the regular and deluxe taxi. Each taxi has a meter and the taxi driver should turn on the meter when starting to drive.

3.3 Paying In A Taxi

There are 3 ways of paying in a taxi, by card, cash or using the T Money Card. Make sure to ask for a receipt when leaving the taxi, just in case you would forget your wallet or phone, you can call the number on the receipt.

It is acceptable to tip taxi drivers in Korea. Normally tipping in South Korea is not done, but when paying with cash in a taxi you can tell the driver to keep the change.

seoul public transport: seoul taxi

There are Seoul City Tour Buses driving around the major attractions in Seoul to make visiting the highlights easier for foreign tourists. For only 18 000 krw (13 000 krw for the Gangnam Tour) you can use the city tour bus all day and get off or on at any stop you want. There are 4 different courses to pick from, namely the Downtown Palace Namsan Course, Panorama Course, Night Course and the Around Gangnam Course. Tickets have to be purchased in advance online or at one of the ticket selling points in Seoul. Buy tickets for here .

The last option is the Seoul City Bikes which can be rented at multiple points around Seoul. Renting one of these bikes is especially worth it when spending time at the Han River . A map of all the Seoul city bike points can be found here .

If you have a Discover Seoul Pass , you can rent a bike free of charge. Otherwise it is 5000 krw for one day or 1000 krw per hour (less than 5 hours).

When looking to use the Seoul public transport like subway or bus it is recommended to download some of the navigation apps on your smartphone. The best apps to have are Seoul Subway, Kakao Maps or Naver Maps.

seoul subway app

The Seoul subway app is the best to navigate on the Seoul Subway. The app is in English, doesn’t require an internet connection and gives real time updates. Download it here. More info here if you want check the Seoul subway map English desktop version. If you want to use the bus then getting Kakao Maps or Naver Maps is necessary. For using Kakao or Naver Maps an internet connection is required and most of the text on the app will be in Korean. Google Maps also works in Korea when it comes to taking the bus or subway. It doesn’t work for navigating in a car or on foot.

You can pay for public transport in Seoul using a T-money card, which is a rechargeable card that can be used on buses, subways, and taxis. You can purchase a T-money card at convenience stores or subway stations, and recharge it with cash or a credit card.

The subway system in Seoul is extensive and efficient, making it a popular option for getting around the city. Buses are also widely available and can be a good option for shorter trips or if you need to go to a specific location that is not easily accessible by subway.

Yes, public transport in Seoul is generally very safe. There are CCTV cameras installed on buses and subways, and there are often security guards or police officers present at major stations. This is a really great article! Although I did not read ‘every’ word, there was one thing that jumped out at me because of my own experience. Regarding transfers using the T-Money card, when leaving a bus to transfer to another, you must ‘check out’ of the bus with the card. Otherwise, when going to the next bus for transfer, you’d be charged again as if starting out. I paid ‘double’ a few times! This point is worth mentioning, I think.

Ah yes! This happened to me so many times in the beginning… I will include this in the article. Thanks for pointing it out.

PSA: Seoul Metro to Offer Unlimited Subway Passes for Tourists

Here’s to cities with efficient public transportation. by Ina Louise Manto | September 13, 2023

One of the best ways to save on travel costs is to utilize the destination’s public transportation, especially if it’s as affordable and efficient as Seoul’s. The subway maps can get overwhelming at first, but with the help of transportation apps , you’ll be commuting like a local in no time. If you’re planning to spend the holidays in Seoul, you’re in luck as Seoul Metro announced unlimited subway travel passes for tourists. Here’s what we know so far:

Unlimited subway travel passes

Seoul Metro, Seoul’s subway operator, announced in August that it will issue travel passes that offer unlimited subway access to cater to the influx of tourists visiting the city. The firm will be issuing one-day and three-day passes. This is based on data that 36.8 percent of tourists in Seoul visit for an average of four to seven days.

How much will these unli passes be?

The Korea Times reports that prices will be the following:

  • 5,600 won for a one-day pass (approx. PHP 238)
  • 11,800 won for a three-day pass (approx. PHP 501)

These passes will be available later this year.  Note that the prices shared with The Korea Times are still subject to change.

For more information or updates, keep posted on Seoul Metro’s official website or download the Seoul Subway mobile app.

Getting Around Seoul Like a Local: A Public Transport Guide

' src=

Seoul (서울), capital of South Korea, has an efficient, extensive public transport system that’s used by over 10 million local residents – and tourists like you and me. This includes the Seoul Metropolitan Subway (Seoul Metro), as well as public buses and regional rail/bus services.

I’m going to explain how you can use public transport for getting into Seoul, getting around Seoul, and getting to other places in South Korea from Seoul. If you have a question that’s not answered here, leave a comment so I can help you out and improve this guide!

THE GUIDE: PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN SEOUL

Save to Pinterest: Seoul public transport guide for visitors

Before Arrival: what you need to know

If you’ve been checking Seoul out on Google Maps, you’ll realize that  you can’t interact with the map  by clicking on subway stations or bus stops. Due to national security laws , Google Maps for South Korea is static and public transport directions are unreliable (driving directions are completely unavailable on Google Maps.)

Hence, to plan your rides around Seoul, I recommend using these:

Getting around Seoul using Citymapper-Roamscapes

  • Interactive Seoul subway map  by Seoul Metro, which shows travel times and fares (requires Flash)
  • Subway navigation app : there are several out there but I use KakaoMetro ( Android / iOS )
  • Citymapper for trip planning and next train/bus timings. Citymapper beats competitors like Moovit  as when you search for places (e.g. “Starfield Coex Mall”), Citymapper’s result is in English, while Moovit shows “스타필드 코엑스몰” – which, if you can’t read Hangeul , is pretty much useless. Citymapper even offers “Subway Only” and “Cold Safe” navigation routes!

The top attractions in Seoul are served by the Seoul subway and you’re likely to use only that, without ever setting foot on a public bus (seriously, there are 447 stations just on the main lines 1-9!) Nonetheless, I’ve included information about using public buses too.

While you’re planning your trip, check out the best places to stay in Seoul .

On Arrival: the T-Money Card

Incheon International Airport (ICN) is South Korea’s main international airport and you’re most likely to land here when visiting South Korea. The first thing you should do upon arrival is to get your fare card: the T-Money card.

Seoul public transport guide: Tmoney card

What is T-Money? T-Money is a contactless, reloadable farecard used for public transport in Seoul, as well as nearly all other cities. There are also accessories like phone charms or keychains with the T-Money chip embedded in them!

What can T-Money be used for?  Apart from being a public transport fare card, T-Money can also be used to pay for taxi fares and purchases at convenience stores, cafes, and fast food outlets like McDonalds.

Where can I buy T-Money cards? T-Money is most easily purchased at convenience stores or metro stations (Price: KRW 2,500). At Incheon Airport, try the GS25 convenience stores in the arrival hall. You can buy the T-Money card using a credit card, but all reloads must be paid for with cash whether you top-up at convenience stores or in subway stations.

Can T-Money be shared? No. Each traveler needs their own card for the Seoul subway, although the card can be shared when taking public buses.

Does the T-Money card expire? T-Money does not expire, so there’s no need to refund them if you’ll be visiting South Korea again! However, if you have a T-Money card from before 2014, you’ll want to get a new one: a new “One Card All Pass” system was introduced in 2014 that makes T-Money usable on express/intercity buses, toll booths, railroad stations, and public transport in other cities outside Seoul.

Do I have to use T-Money? Single-trip Seoul subway tickets are available for purchase at all stations, and cash is accepted on buses, but your fare will cost more. Trust me, you’ll be using T-Money and the subway very frequently in Seoul!

Getting from Incheon Airport to Seoul: the AREX

The AREX (Airport Railroad Express) is the metro line connecting Incheon airport to Seoul. There are two train services available: Express and Commuter.

seoul metro tourist pass

  • Commuter service (KRW 4,150): 60 minutes. Stops at all stations, terminating at Seoul Station.

The AREX makes a good tutorial for using the Seoul subway. Here are some basics to prep you when you arrive all bleary-eyed at Incheon Airport subway station:

  • Tap in/out at the station gantries to enter or exit each station.
  • The Seoul subway has a distance-based fare structure, with a basic fare of KRW 1,250 and no peak/off-peak fare differences.
  • Announcements for the next station are made in Korean and English (+Japanese, Mandarin at central stations). In-train LED marquees display the station names – and which side the doors will open – in English and Korean.

Getting around Seoul: taking the Seoul subway

The Seoul metro system actually comprises both above-ground and underground stops, but in the downtown region almost all stations are underground. When it comes to accessibility, the Seoul subway isn’t super wheelchair-friendly: many older station exits only have stairs and escalators. On the interactive subway map , click the “Elevator” or “Wheelchair Lift” tabs at the bottom of the screen to see which stations have accessibility facilities.

Example of Seoul subway station guide map

As you can tell from this map, the many subway lines and station exits can make your head spin. I highly recommend you download the apps mentioned earlier.

  • Sometimes, the distance between one line and another at the same station can be a few hundred metres – you don’t want to end up at the wrong exits or transfer to the wrong lines!
  • For many subway stations in Seoul, the platforms are on either side of the tracks and you’ll need to check that you’re going down to the right direction platform.
  • Some lines have split terminus stops. If you’re traveling somewhere along a split, make sure you board a train going to the correct terminus.
  • The apps with real-time navigation will indicate whether you should board the train.
  • Fun fact: you’ll hear lots of music in the Seoul subway. At the station, you’ll hear a trumpet fanfare or xylophones when the train is arriving (opposite directions). The train also plays a traditional tune when approaching a transfer station.

Check out this video below to see what it’s like riding the subway in Seoul!

Getting around Seoul: taking public buses

Seoul’s public buses use color-coded livery for different types of buses: blue (trunk bus; base fare KRW 1,200),  green (feeder bus; base fare KRW 1,200), red (express bus; base fare KRW 2,300), and yellow (loop bus; base fare KRW 1,100).

  • Take a photo of the bus route map at the bus stop (to count stops) and know what the stop name looks like in Korean, so you can press the bell in advance.
  • If you use Citymapper, it’ll show your route on a map, bus arrival times, as well as the number of stops you’ll need to pass!

It’s highly unlikely that you’ll need to take a bus in Seoul, but if you do, enjoy the ride!

Seoul public transport etiquette & safety

When getting around Seoul in trains and buses, take note of the following:

  • When using escalators, stand on the right and move on the left.
  • Koreans will push and squeeze in a crowded train/bus, especially during peak hours. The small personal space is just a cultural trait; don’t take this as a sign of rudeness.
  • Passengers will keep to themselves, not making much noise, and you won’t see busking in the trains. I have, however, observed a woman putting on a full face of makeup on the train!
  • Priority seats at the ends of train cabins are meant for the elderly, pregnant, and handicapped. Try not to sit there.
  • There are no women-only cars, but as a woman I’ve never felt physically unsafe in the trains.
  • Often, standing passengers will place their bags on the rails above seats. Whether you do that or keep your bag on you, use common sense to prevent pickpocketing.

Should you get a seoul subway pass or tourist pass.

In Seoul, there are so many subway passes offering special privileges and discounts to tourists that choosing the right one for you can be quite a headache. Here I’ve shortlisted four popular Seoul tourist passes for you; I left out passes that were not T-Money – those still work for public transport in Seoul, but may not be valid in other cities or retail merchants.

MPASS Seoul subway pass

From KRW 15,000 (1-7 days) Gives you up to 20 free rides a day on Seoul subway lines 1-9, blue and green buses, and the AREX commuter service (arrival/departure from ICN). Pretty good deal if you take at least 8 rides a day.

Amazingpay Tmoney Seoul subway pass

AmazingPay Tmoney

KRW 50,000 This card actually comes pre-loaded with KRW 46,000 that you can use for 10% off airport limousine bus rides. Besides that, there’s nothing really special about it.

Traveling from Seoul to other places in South Korea

Spring (cherry blossoms peak in April) and autumn (fall foliage peak in November) are the best times to visit South Korea.

While visitors to South Korea tend to lavish their attention on Seoul, there’s a lot to see and do around all of South Korea – from viewing cherry blossoms to hiking (Koreans’ national pastime), staying in temples, and learning about folk culture.

For destinations not accessible by rail, there’s no lack of express buses  (click the top-right link to choose English) and  intercity buses   to take you wherever you want to go. You can even pay for your tickets using…wait for it…T-Money!

Remember: your T-Money card can be used for the subway in other cities like Busan, Daegu, and Incheon, as well as all buses in Gangwon-do (Gangwon province) . Happy travels!
