Whatever your sense of adventure, comprehensive travel insurance for the Cook Islands is the best way to keep you and your family safe. So what should your Cook Islands travel insurance include, what should you know about COVID-19, and how can you stay safe during your escape to paradise?

Things to know about the Cook Islands and COVID-19

Thankfully, the Cook Islands managed to keep the country almost entirely free of COVID-19 throughout the pandemic due to firm restrictions including those on international travel. The country re-opened its borders in January 2022, with some travel requirements.

Cook Island COVID-19 travel requirements for Australians

For up-to-date information on the Cook Islands’ current COVID-19 entry requirements, you can visit the Cook Islands travel website.

Cook Islands travel insurance and COVID-19: What are you covered for?

From missed flights and cancelled events to booking extensions and room relocations, disruptions due to COVID-19 can be frustrating on holiday. So when it comes to your Cook Islands travel insurance, does your policy include cover for COVID-19 ?

Here are some frequently asked questions about COVID-19 and travel insurance:

Do you need travel insurance for the cook islands.

The Cook Islands is known to be a safe destination, but there are still incidents of petty crime against tourists, a risk of natural disasters, and health hazards that could put a downer on your trip.

Our travel insurance policy is designed to protect you from these types of unexpected events, so you can focus on enjoying your holiday, knowing we’re with you should anything go wrong.

What should your travel insurance policy for the Cook Islands include?

With a holiday to the Cook Islands providing everything from adventure activities to poolside relaxation, it’s important that you have a travel insurance policy with a wide range of cover benefits. A comprehensive travel insurance policy for the Cook Islands is the best way to protect yourself and your family from the unexpected.

Storms in Cook Islands

Natural disaster cover in the Cook Islands

Like its Pacific neighbours, the Cook Islands experiences cyclones predominantly from November through to April. Cyclones and severe weather often affect the region, which can cause disruptions for Aussie travellers.

In fact, a flight from Auckland in January 2022 had to be diverted back to New Zealand after being unable to land in Rarotonga . Several of our unlucky travellers have experienced disruptions due to poor weather impacting the Cook Islands, needing to claim for unused accommodation and additional meals.

If you’re planning to visit Rarotonga and the Cook Islands, particularly over the summer months, it’s important to consider a travel insurance policy that offers cover for natural disasters like cyclones and travel disruptions due to poor weather.

Our International Comprehensive natural disaster cover

If your prepaid travel arrangements (such as flights, accommodation and excursions) need to be changed or cancelled because of an unexpected natural disaster in the Cook Islands, and your insurance started before the event occurred, our International Comprehensive policy can offer cover if you need to cancel or change the dates of your prepaid travel plans.

If you’re stuck overseas for more than 12 hours because your flight has been delayed or cancelled due to an unexpected event, we can offer cover for the cost of any additional equivalent expense type, including scheduled transport and accommodation and living expenses incurred while you are waiting to return home.

If your insurance started after the natural disaster has occurred, you won’t be covered for any alteration costs incurred as a result of the natural disaster, such as cancelling or changing your original flight. However, our International Comprehensive policy can still offer cover for other unexpected events in accordance with your policy, such as having your personal belongings stolen or injuring yourself overseas.

Medical and hospital cover

Our International Comprehensive policies offer unlimited cover for medical treatment and evacuation, and our Emergency Assistance team are also available 24/7. Remember that medical facilities in the Cook Islands are not always up to the same standard as in Australia. Travellers should take special care when visiting the Outer Islands like Manuae, Takutea, Manihiki, Penrhyn and Rakahanga . While they offer a true sense of untouched beauty, their healthcare facilities are often limited to the basic healthcare offered by resorts.

Snorkling in Cook Islands

Does my insurance cover adventure sports in the Cook Islands?

The Cook Islands is all about adventure, which is why our international policies offer cover for many adventure activities.

However, our policy doesn’t cover you for certain activities, like kitesurfing. For other activities like parasailing, you are only covered if you participate with a licensed operator. If you’re scuba diving in the Cook Islands, it’s essential that you hold an open water diving certificate or are diving with a qualified instructor.

Activities which are excluded under our policies can be found under General Exclusions in the relevant  policy document .

Is there cover for lost, stolen and damaged valuables

While the Cook Islands is a safe and welcoming destination for Kiwi travellers, your travel insurance should protect your valuables from loss, theft and damage. Whether it’s a stolen phone or a GoPro lost on the reef, our International Comprehensive policy offers cover for your lost, stolen, or damaged personal items resulting from an unexpected event.

Travel insurance for cancellations and delays in the Cook Islands

Cancellations and delays are an unfortunate reality of travelling, which is why our International Comprehensive policy offers cover for changes to your journey before and after you leave.

For example, if your trip to the Cook Islands is cancelled or changed due to an unexpected event before you depart Australia, your policy offers cover for cancellations fees and prepaid travel costs.

If the unexpected happens during your holiday in the Cook Islands, your policy offers cover for transport, accommodation, meals, activities and tour costs if you cannot reach your next destination on time, or if you need to cut your trip short and return to Australia.

Travel insurance that features quality cover for cancellations and delays, including cover for COVID-19 , has never been more important.

Cover for rental vehicles like mopeds and scooters

Mopeds and motorbikes are some of the most popular ways to get around the Cook Islands, with a round-trip of Rarotonga taking a little over an hour. However, they’re also some of our most common claims from the country, which is why your travel insurance should include cover for when you’re driving or a passenger on a moped or scooter. Our International Comprehensive policy offers an additional add-on for mopeds and motorbikes if you require cover for your trip.

With International Comprehensive, we also offer cover for rental vehicle excess, up to $10,000 if your moped or motorbike is stolen or damaged.

Staying safe in the Cook Islands

No one likes to think about what could go wrong when planning their dream holiday, but reading up about local risks is a good way to ensure your trip goes smoothly. Before you visit the Cook Islands, familiarise yourself with the following safety information:

Crime and pickpockets

Although the crime rate is low on the Cook Islands, thieves sometimes target tourists, especially at the beach, so never leave your personal belongings out of sight.

Insects and illness

Take plenty of insect repellent and you may want to book accommodation that has a mosquito net over the bed as there are some insect-borne diseases, such as dengue fever. If you’re pregnant, discuss your travel plans with your doctor as the Cook Islands has reported cases of Zika virus.

Food in Cook Islands

Food safety in the Cook Islands

Like any destination, there’s always a chance you might fall ill with food poising in the Cook Islands. If you’re eating from the resort buffet, you should use your best judgement to avoid contaminated food. To avoid food poisoning, remember to:

  • Eat fresh and well-cooked food
  • Avoid hot meals that have gone cold, and cold meals that have gone warm
  • Ensure you use clean and dry serving utensils
  • Avoid buffets without screen guards protecting the food from other guests.
  • Stick to bottled or boiled water

There are a few local laws to be aware of on the Cook Islands:

  • If you're driving, monitor your alcohol intake and remember the legal blood alcohol limit for drivers and motorcyclists is 0.08.
  • The Cook Islands' standards of dress and behaviour are modest, especially outside the resort areas, so cover up to avoid causing offence.

Cook Islands travel insurance exclusions

Our International policies provide comprehensive and medical-only travel insurance option, however no travel insurance offers cover for everything. It’s important to remember what your Cook Islands travel insurance may not include, like:

Cover for pre-existing medical conditions (PECs)

Pre-existing medical conditions (PECs) aren’t automatically covered under travel insurance, however, they can be added as extras when buying your policy.

At SCTI, we have a list of PECs that you must declare when organising your travel insurance, and a few definitions that you should be aware of if you’re travelling with health conditions. Find out what you need to do to seek cover for your PECs.

If you’d like some advice on how your pre-existing conditions might affect your Cook Islands travel insurance, please don’t hesitate to email us at any time or connect with one of our insurance experts on 1800 196 484 .

Other Cook Islands travel insurance exclusions

Pre-existing medical conditions aren’t the only thing that may not be covered under your Cook Islands travel insurance. You won’t be covered if:

  • You’re participating in adventure activities with an unlicensed tour operator, such as diving or parasailing.
  • You’re riding a moped or motorbike and you haven’t added this as an extra on your travel insurance policy.
  • You’re sailing more than 22.2 kilometres (12 nautical miles) from populated land.
  • A natural event occurred before the start date of your insurance and causes disruptions to your travel plans.

How much does travel insurance for the Cook Islands cost?

The price of your Cook Islands travel insurance will depend on several factors, including:

  • How many people are on the policy
  • How long you’re travelling for
  • Whether you’re visiting other countries as well as the Cook Islands
  • Whether you have any pre-existing medical conditions
  • Whether you have any high-value items to add to your policy
  • Whether you add cover for moped or motorbike riding.

Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

Travel Insurance  Frequently Asked Questions

Does travel insurance cover coronavirus(covid-19).

It depends! Unfortunately, the answer isn't a straightforward one. There are some situations where cover is available, and others where it is an exclusion. It largely depends on which insurer you bought your policy with ; when you bought it; where you're travelling to; when you're travelling; and, the reason for your claim. One thing that is for certain - you're unlikely to be covered for claims relating to the coronavirus for future travel if you haven't yet purchased a travel insurance policy as this is a known event.

Which is the best travel insurance in New Zealand?

The best travel insurance for you depends entirely on your planned trip and your circumstances. If you're a backpacker on a tight budget, you might want a no-frills medical-only policy. Whereas, if you're heading on a once in a lifetime cruise, have outlaid a lot of money in upfront deposits or if you have health conditions, a comprehensive policy might be best for you. While there's no single best travel insurance that's right for everyone, finding a policy that works for you is easy when you use our quote comparison to start comparing prices and features. With Compare Travel Insurance, you can also read up on travel insurance reviews from customers to learn about their customer service and importantly, claims experience.

Is it too late to buy cover?

It's better late than never. We recommend buying a policy as soon as you've booked and started paying deposits for flights, accommodation and tours, but you can buy travel insurance at any point. Even if you forgot and are already overseas . Exclusions may apply though, so be sure to check the PDS and eligibility criteria before you buy.

Can I get cover for my medical conditions?

Cover is available for most medical conditions. Whether or not you need to declare your conditions and whether an additional charge will apply depends on the condition, its stability, current treatment, the recency of the diagnosis and your age. Minor conditions such as allergies, cataracts, and certain diabetes are often covered free of charge. However other medical conditions such as arthritis, any kind of cancer, heart conditions and hip & knee replacements require medical screenings and additional charges are likelt to apply. Today, most insurers use online medical screening software which makes it easy to declare your conditions and get covered in minutes. Although finding cover for terminal illnesses in New Zealand is difficult. Learn more about covering your conditions with our guide on declaring your medical conditions .

Can I purchase travel insurance at the airport?

Yes, you can. Generally speaking, you can purchase travel insurance up to a year before your trip, right up to boarding at the airport. With comprehensive travel insurance, you are covered for cancellation benefits from the moment you buy your policy, so we recommend buying it as soon as you start paying for flights, tours and accommodation.

Can I get travel insurance if I'm already overseas?

You can buy cover if you are already overseas, although each travel insurer has different rules on age limits and waiting periods. Check out our already overseas travel insurance guide to learn more.

Does travel insurance cover pregnancy?

You can buy travel insurance to cover you when you're pregnant, but different brands will have different rules around how many weeks gestation they will provide cover up until. Terms may also vary on whether you've had complications, have a multiple pregnancy, conceived via IVF and whether you're looking for cover in case of emergency birth. Check out the handy table in our pregnancy guide for more information.

Do I need cover in New Zealand?

Unexpected events can happen anywhere. It is just as important to have domestic cover when travelling around New Zealand as it is when travelling overseas. If you're a New Zealand resident, a domestic policy covers you for cancellations, luggage cover and often rental vehicle excess. Medical coverage is not included, but you'll be eligible for publicly funded health care services. For non-residents visiting New Zealand, discover International visitors to New Zealand are currently not required to have travel insurance by law, but it is highly recommended to protect you from eye-watering medical bills and more.

Which is the cheapest policy?

The cost of travel insurance depends on a range of factors including your destination, duration of travel, age of travellers, planned activities, whether or not you have any medical conditions and the type of cover you choose (medical only, mid-range or comprehensive). The cheapest travel insurance is generally to less risky parts of the world - places with cheaper healthcare and less risk of injury, illness or theft - and policies which offer less coverage - so ones without benefits for adventure activities or pre-existing conditions. To get cheap travel insurance from New Zealand for your upcoming trip, create a quote and compare prices, but remember that the cheapest isn't always the best. You should consider your trip and what you require cover for.

Why should I buy travel insurance direct online?

Comparing prices and features online makes it easier to find the policy that's right for you and your circumstances. With comparetravelinsurance.co.nz , the price you see is the same price direct from the insurer. Sometimes you're not after the best policy but rather the best bang for your buck and comparing prices and features online can save you time, worry and loads of money.

Why Buy Travel Insurance?

We’re not silly, we know that plenty of New Zealanders go on holiday and have an amazing time exploring new and exciting places without buying travel insurance. But taking a gamble on your much needed break can be risky. Here’s why!

Exxy Medical Costs

If you buy a policy for just one reason this is it! Falling ill or being injured while travelling overseas can be extremely costly. Hospital costs in the USA can reach up to $10,000 per day, while emergency transport home for treatment can easily exceed $100,000! Ouch!

Disasters Can Strike

The excitement of getting on that plane has you knotted up like a pretzel. Picture your dismay if you had to cancel last minute. Worse still, imagine you’re mid-martini when bad news breaks. Should you need to return home, you’ll be covered for unforeseen events like injury or illness of a close relative.

Your stuff is important

Loss, theft or damage to your prized possessions can be a common, yet gut-wrenching experience. If your personal belongings go AWOL while you’re away the right policy will pay to replace or repair them. Win!

For your peace of mind

Travel insurance will take a load off so you can get some R&R. A comprehensive policy will cover you for an array of sticky situations while you're travelling within New Zealand, or overseas.

Because You Have To

Still not convinced? We hate to be the fun police, but some countries simply won’t let you in without cover! For example, it is mandatory to take out travel insurance when travelling to Thailand or Cuba.

Travel insurance FAQs

Travel insurance is a specific type of insurance that helps cover a number of costs and disruptions associated with travelling both domestically and overseas. Levels of cover differ per policy, however, travel insurance typically protects against trip cancellation, delays, lost luggage and personal belongings, medical expenses and repatriation, and personal liability.

Most travel insurance providers offer single or multi-trip policies, which can cover multiple countries within a specific timeframe. The destination, length of trip, specific activity add-ons and pre-existing medical conditions all help determine the cost of a travel insurance policy. Policies can be purchased at the time of booking a trip up until the time a traveller leaves their home.

Travel insurance varies for individual travellers based on the options selected by them, so prices vary from person-to-person. The cost of a travel insurance policy is determined by:

  • Age of traveller/s: the older the traveller, the higher the policy cost may be.
  • Number of travellers included in the policy: a higher number of travellers creates more variables, therefore increasing risk.
  • Length of trip/s: a single trip policy is generally around half the amount of a multi-trip policy, making the latter more cost-effective for frequent travellers, while shorter trips often pose less risk of medical incidents and travel interruptions, resulting in lower costs.
  • Destination/s: costs vary greatly depending on the countries and regions covered by a policy. For example, regions such as Europe will often be cheaper than trips to the USA because of the high cost of medical treatment in America.
  • Level of coverage: travellers can opt for cheaper travel insurance as well as comprehensive, more expensive plans to cater to their different needs.
  • Existing medical conditions: a customer’s policy will increase if their medical history shows an increased risk of possible medical treatment requirements while travelling.

While a cheaper policy cost upfront may seem appealing, always read the Policy Wording to ensure your needs are adequately covered should an incident occur.

Travel insurance protects you when travelling domestically or internationally by providing coverage against unforeseen circumstances that may negatively impact your travel plans.

By purchasing travel insurance prior to departure, your policy can help cover the costs of trip cancellations should you no longer be able to travel, as well as the costs of medical treatment, lost passports and personal items while you’re travelling. The customer usually pays for these costs upfront, before being reimbursed by the travel insurer upon claim approval.

To approve a claim, travel insurers require documentation such as a police report or medical bill to confirm the incident occurred.

Always read the Policy Wording before purchasing a travel insurance policy to ensure it provides adequate coverage for your circumstances.

Unfortunately, travel insurance can’t cover absolutely everything. This highlights the importance for travellers to read the Policy Wording before purchasing to avoid becoming frustrated when claims are unsuccessful. It will contain details on the situations you likely won’t be covered in, including:

  • Cancellation: simply changing your mind prior to your trip may not be sufficient for a successful claim.
  • Pre-existing conditions: if medical conditions aren’t disclosed or covered by the policy at time of purchase, exclusions may apply to coverage related to those conditions.
  • Theft or loss of belongings while left unattended: travellers must take care of their belongings as they would as home.
  • Incidents occurring as a result of reckless behaviour: claims arising from excessive drinking or taking recreational drugs will likely be rejected.
  • Winter and adventure sports: claims resulting from participation in high-risk sports will be void unless covered by the policy.
  • Terrorism and extreme weather events: travelling to specific regions against the advice of the government or your insurer may result in unsuccessful claims because the events are no longer unforeseeable circumstances.

For full details of exclusions within a travel insurance plan, consult the Policy Wording.

Purchasing a policy soon after a trip is booked has a number of benefits and increases a traveller’s protection.

When purchased ahead of time, a traveller can cancel their travel insurance policy for a full refund within the cooling-off period. If the policy is purchased before the customer leaves their home to depart for their trip, claims for rearrangements and cancellations caused by unforeseen circumstances can also be made.

By considering travel insurance as an essential part of booking a holiday - not an afterthought when at the airport - travellers are likely to be covered should an incident arise before take-off.

Guide to visiting the Cook Islands

Spanning 2 million square kilometres of rich seas, rugged mountains, pristine beaches and dazzling coral reefs, the Cook Islands is a true Polynesian paradise. The country encompasses 15 individual islands including Rarotonga, which houses the nation’s capital, and is a playground for adventurers, honeymooners, beach bums and travelling families.

Whether it’s exploring world-class scuba sites, winding hiking trails, or just the catch of the day at the resort buffet, you’ll find your own perfect adventure just a stone’s throw from New Zealand. In this guide to travelling in the Cook Islands, we dive into the sights and sounds of Rarotonga and beyond, look at the rich culture and cuisine of the Islands, and offer some helpful hints for travelling from New Zealand.

About Rarotonga

Rarotonga , or “Raro” as the locals call it, is the beating heart of the Cook Islands and just a 3.5-hour flight from Auckland. It’s the largest and most populous island in the country and the centre of most tourism, for good reason.

Dramatic green mountain peaks jut from its centre, blanketed in a forest teeming with biodiversity, cave systems and breathtaking hiking trails. Around its perimeter, countless bays and beaches glisten with blues that hide thriving coral communities beneath the surface. Rarotonga’s natural splendour is matched by its cultural richness, with lively local markets, restaurants and townships housing famously friendly locals to welcome you with a “Kia Orana!” (hello).

Don’t be fooled by its popularity - you won’t find any traffic lights or fast food chains on Raro. The island is just 32 kilometres in circumference and leaves travellers with a calming sense of tropical isolation.

Rarotonga weather

Raro is blessed with a pleasant and warm climate year-round, with slightly cooler days through winter and slightly warmer days through summer. The summer months generally experience more rainfall and the occasional cyclone.

If you’re hoping to catch the whale migration, July to October is your best chance to spot humpbacks from the shore.

Snorkel in Rarotonga Cook Islands

4 things to do in Rarotonga

We’ll get to the other islands the country has to offer shortly, but first, let’s take a look at four great activities to try in Rarotonga.

1. Scuba diving

No list of Rarotonga’s attractions would be complete without describing its world-class scuba diving. Because the island lies within a sheltered lagoon, divers of all skill levels can enjoy Raro’s underwater ecosystems. Gently sloping reefs, dramatic drop-offs, coral gardens and even a few shipwrecks are teeming with sea life, with favourable water temperatures and visibility throughout the year.

Insider tip: Scuba is one of the most popular activities on Rarotonga and there is no shortage of dive shops to meet the demand. Ensure you book with a reputable and PADI-certified instructor.

2. Snorkelling

Raro’s incredible snorkelling sites give travellers the chance to appreciate its vibrant marine environment while staying closer to the surface. Popular areas like the Aroa Lagoon Marine Reserve, Muri Lagoon, Fruits of Rarotonga and Black Rock each boast easy access, warm turquoise waters and abundant sea life.

Insider tip: Some of Raro’s snorkel sites are exposed to certain wind directions, which can ruffle the water surface and cause mild currents, so ask your hotel or dive shop for advice on where to go on any given day.

For adventure travellers, not all of the action happens underwater. The island’s mountainous centre offers serene hiking trails in all directions, dotted with cave systems, wildlife and breathtaking lookouts. The Cross Island Track is one of the island’s most famous, with a challenging trail that passes through cascading streams, dense forest and the iconic Te Rua Manga (The Needle) - a rocky peak reaching for the sky.

Insider tip: If you’re embarking on the Cross Island Track, remember to pack mosquito repellant, sturdy footwear and supplies to last you around four hours.

4. Local markets

When you’re not diving below the surface or climbing above the clouds, Rarotonga’s many local markets provide free entertainment, fresh food, fun for the family and gifts for the friends back home. Be sure to check out:

  • The Punanga Nui Market in Avarua (mornings until 12pm and Thursday nights from 5pm to 9pm).
  • The Muri Night Market in Muri Beach Village (evenings on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday).

Insider tip: The markets are cash only, so don’t forget to bring your Cook Islands coins or New Zealand Dollars.

Dream Beach, Aitutaki, Cook Islands

Exploring other regions of the Cook Islands

Rarotonga is just one of the country’s 15 gorgeous islands. Smaller but no less beautiful adventures await in places like Aitutaki, Atiu, Mitiaro and Mauke in the Southern Group, and Manihiki and Rakahanga in the Northern Group.

Air Rarotonga, the national airline of the Cook Islands, offers regular flights to Raro’s surrounding islands, and even offer day trip tours to Aitutaki; a 50-minute flight north.

Let’s take a look at three other regions to explore in the Cook Islands.

1. Aitutaki

Commonly referred to as “heaven on earth”, Aitutaki is the second-most popular destination in the Cook Islands after Rarotonga. Blinding white sand beaches fringed by gin-clear waters and breezy palms make you feel like you’ve landed straight into a desktop screensaver, and the area boasts the world’s most beautiful lagoon, according to Lonely Planet founder, Tony Wheeler.

Aitutaki is actually a collection of small islets known as motus, which are scattered across the region’s dazzling lagoon. Exploring untouched beaches by kayak gives you the chance to find your own hidden gems.

For the travellers unafraid to venture off the beaten track, Atiu promises a unique adventure into an ancient paradise. About half the size of Rarotonga, Atiu is home to just 400 people and has few of the creature comforts of its neighbour. But if it’s rare birdlife, ancient cave systems and truly secluded beaches you crave, Atiu could be exactly what you’re looking for.

Atiu is renowned for its birdlife, including the rare native Kopeka, and exotic varieties of Tavake, the Brown Bobby, Blue Kingfisher and more.

Known as the Garden Island, the volcanic Mauke is blessed with incredibly fertile soil that reveals itself in plumes of vibrant flora. It’s also home to some of the Pacific’s most impressive freshwater caves, with deep clear pools sheltered by awe-inspiring stalactites. Vai Tango, Moti Cave and Motuanga Cave are three must-sees.

A two-night tour from Rarotonga is a great way to experience Mauke’s beauty and can be arranged with Air Raro .

Beach bungalows in the Cook Islands

Tips for travelling in the Cook Islands

Accommodation in Rarotonga and the Cook Islands

The Cook Islands has accommodation options to suit all budgets, and according to their official tourism website , there is “no building taller than a coconut tree.” In Rarotonga, you’ll find a blend of upscale resorts, family-friendly hotels, smaller guest houses, apartments and bungalows. There are also eco retreats like the award-winning Ikurangi , which offers luxury glamping tents.

Getting around Rarotonga

You won’t find any bustling intersections or traffic jams in Raro, so getting around the small island is a relaxing activity in itself. The Island Bus is an easy and affordable option, but a rental car can give you even more flexibility. Scooters are the most popular mode of transport among tourists and locals, just ensure you hold an international driving permit and follow local driving laws.

Cook Islands time difference

The time difference between the Cook Islands and New Zealand has caught travellers by surprise in the past. Despite being under a four-hour flight, the Cook Islands is actually 22 hours behind New Zealand! So when booking your hotel, don’t be fooled thinking it’s just a two hour time difference; you don’t want to be caught not having booked enough nights’ accommodation.

As you can see, the Cook Islands holds equal parts of excitement and relaxation that is sure to please all kinds of travellers. And with an easy flight from New Zealand, why not make it your next adventure?

Frequently asked questions

What countries does my selected cover^ for epidemic and pandemic diseases (including Covid-19) cover?

All countries that do not appear on the Level 4 warning “Do not travel” advisory listed on SafeTravel.

SafeTravel houses all warnings inclusive of non-Covid-19 advisories which are issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT).

If I contract Covid-19 prior to travelling do I have selected cover^ for epidemic and pandemic diseases?

Cover is in place, providing that the country you are travelling to does not have a MFAT, SafeTravel or New Zealand Government Level 4 warning “Do not travel” in place.

If I contract Covid-19 in transit to my destination country do I have selected cover^ for epidemic and pandemic diseases?

Cover is in place, providing that the countries you are travelling to do not have a MFAT, SafeTravel or New Zealand Government Level 4 warning “Do not travel” in place.

Does selected cover^ for epidemic and pandemic diseases still apply if I am unvaccinated?

Cover is in place as there is no requirement to be vaccinated/boosted under our policy. However, if the destination country requires an inbound traveller to be vaccinated, then the traveller must be able to meet these entry requirements. This also applies to the condition of carriage for example of the airline they are travelling. There is no cover if denied boarding or entry to a country due to not meeting the carrier or country vaccination requirements.

Are there any mandatory epidemic and pandemic insurance requirements to enter certain countries?

Many countries, even before the pandemic, had compulsory health and travel insurance requirements, but many more have since added rules – typically around Covid-19 medical expenses and the associated costs. The coverage type and amount varies by vaccination status and country.  Prior to travelling, check with the nearest embassy, consulate or immigration department of the destination.

If I had Covid-19, should I declare this as a Pre-existing Medical Condition?

At the time of purchasing your policy if you have previously had Covid-19 and are now testing negative, are feeling well with no symptoms at all, then you do not need to declare this as a Pre-existing Medical Condition. A Covid-19 positive test result at a later date would be considered a new infection.

However, if you are:

  • still testing positive; or

What Documents Do I Need to Travel to Rarotonga & the Cook Islands? [2023]

What Documents Do I Need to Travel to Rarotonga & the Cook Islands? [2024]

Travel documents, forms and paperwork you need to prepare for the cook islands.

The most stressful part of going on holiday is making sure you haven’t forgotten anything, especially any important paperwork! You don’t want to be “that guy” that gets turned away at the airport or drilled at the border. You just want to hand over your papers and start sipping on cocktails already! Well, that can certainly be the case if you get everything prepared prior to departure. Luckily, we’ve put together just the guide to help. Scroll through our travel documents checklist and find out just what documents you need to travel to Rarotonga and the Cook Islands .

Travel Documents Checklist: What Do I Need to Travel to the Cook Islands?

Check that you have this travel paperwork completed and available before your flight to the Cook Islands (with the exception of the Passenger Arrival Card which will be given to you on the plane).

  • Passport valid for no less than six months after intended departure date
  • Flight ticket/ booking information
  • Outbound/return travel ticket or booking information
  • Cook Islands accommodation contact details
  • Passenger Arrival Card
  • Travel insurance (optional)
  • Driver’s license , as well as your International Driving Permit if your license is not in English (if hiring a vehicle)
  • Medical prescription (if applicable)
  • Marine Arrival and Departure Forms (if arriving by sailing boat).

While having a paper copy of the above travel documents is recommended for a quick process through Cook Islands Customs, we also recommend having an easy-to-access digital copy of these forms on your phone – even without internet access !

Passport for Entering the Cook Islands

One of the most essential travel documents you need for the Cook Islands is, of course, your passport.

Passports from all countries are accepted for visiting the Cook Islands. Passports must be valid for at least six months (or seven days for New Zealand and Australian citizens)  after the date you intend to leave the Cook Islands. In other words, the date that you state on your Passenger Arrival Card .

If your passport is valid for less than six months beyond the intended period of stay, then you need to seek authority to enter the Cook Islands from the  Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration (MFAI) and bring that paperwork with you too!

Do You Need a Visa?

Note that you do not need a visa for visiting the Cook Islands, as a tourist permit is automatically granted upon entry into the Cook Islands as long as you meet the entry requirements. Find out more in Cook Islands Tourist Visa: Do You Need a Visa to Visit Rarotonga & the Cook Islands?

If you are arriving in the Cook Islands on a work permit or as a permanent resident, for example, you will need evidence of these types of visas.

Vaccination Certificate (including COVID-19)

After a series of successful border closures during the 2020-2022 COVID-19 crisis, the Cook Islands boasts one of the world’s highest COVID-19 vaccination rates. As a result, there are no current vaccination mandates to enter the Cook Islands .

We list all the recommended and/or mandatory vaccines for a visit to the Cook Islands in our article Do You Need Vaccines to Travel to Rarotonga & the Cook Islands?

Arrival and Departure Flight Tickets/Booking Information

Another important travel document for the Cook Islands is, of course, the paperwork for your flights to and from the Cook Islands!

Ticket/Booking Information for Your Arrival Flight in the Cook Islands

After booking your flight to the Cook Islands, you should have received an email detailing your booking reference, departure time, etc. This is sometimes called an “E-Ticket”. Print this out and also save a digital copy so you can provide this to airport staff on check-in for your flight to the Cook Islands.

After check-in at the airport, you will be provided with a Boarding Pass, listing your name, seat number, etc. Don’t lose it!

Ticket/Booking Information for Your Departure Flight From the Cook Islands

In the same email, if you have booked a return flight to the Cook Islands, you should also have your return flight details. If you have booked a separate flight or travel ticket departing the Cook Islands, you will need to print and/or have a digital copy of this evidence, as it is a mandatory entry requirement in the Cook Islands to have a valid outbound or return ticket to your port of origin.

See Cook Islands Tourist Visa: Do You Need a Visa to Visit Rarotonga & the Cook Islands?  to learn more about entry requirements.

Passenger Arrival Card + Accommodation Details

On your flight to the Cook Islands, airline staff will hand out the Cook Islands Passenger Arrival Card for you to complete and give to Customs on arrival. The travel documents already discussed in the guide, such as your passport and flight boarding pass, will provide you with all the information you need to complete the Passenger Arrival Card. One additional piece of information that you need to provide on the card is the details of your accommodation in the Cook Islands.

The Passenger Arrival Card requires you to at least know the name of your accommodation if staying at a commercial accommodation, as well as the accommodation’s phone number. Otherwise, provide the address of your accommodation, the name of your host and their phone number. Make sure you have this information readily available to complete the Passenger Arrival Card.

For more advice on completing the Passenger Arrival Card, head to What You Need to Know About the Cook Islands Passenger Arrival Card .

Other Travel Documents You May Need for the Cook Islands

All of the documents detailed above are mandatory for travel to the Cook Islands unless stated otherwise. The following travel documents and paperwork are optional or only apply to specific situations.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance ensures financial cover in the event that travel plans need to be changed, theft or loss of personal items, you are injured, etc. Travel insurance policies cover (and don’t cover) a range of circumstances where you otherwise might have significant expenses. It is a personal decision to purchase travel insurance, so if you decide to go for it, make sure you have your policy paperwork and certificate.

Driver’s License (and International Driving Permit)

If you want to hire a vehicle in the Cook Islands and/or apply for a Visitor’s Scooter License , then you’re going to need your valid overseas driver’s license. If your driver’s license is not in English, you need to also provide a certified translation, such as an International Driving Permit (IDP). Check out  Can You Drive in the Cook Islands With an Overseas License? to see what driver’s licenses are accepted in the Cook Islands.

Medical Prescription

If you’re bringing prescribed medication to the Cook Islands, be sure that you have evidence that the medication is prescribed to you. Usually, the original packaging for the medication with your name and doctor’s name is sufficient. But if you don’t have this available, a copy of your prescription or a doctor’s letter will suffice.

Arriving in the Cook Islands by Personal Boat/Yacht

Those arriving in the Cook Islands on a personal sailing yacht need to provide additional paperwork for entering and departing the Cook Islands. All of this is detailed in the Sailing Guide to Rarotonga & the Cook Islands: Tips for Yachting .

Canstar’s Best Value Travel Insurance NZ

Posted by Bruce Pitchers November 21, 2023

Holidays promise carefree relaxation away from work pressures and domestic chores. However, plenty of unforeseen events can ruin the best-laid vacation plans, from illness and accidents to the loss or theft of possessions.

If the worst does happen, a dream holiday can turn into a financial nightmare, especially if you’re left facing bills for medical treatments overseas or for life-saving repatriation. This is why ensuring you have adequate insurance cover before you jet off or sail away on your overseas adventure is a travel essential.

But trying to find the best insurance cover can be complicated. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, as policy details and costs vary, depending on your age and choice of destination. And comparing different levels of cover and costs can be complicated.

But that’s where Canstar can help. As part of our mission to inform Kiwi consumers about the best financial products in the market, each year we analyse a wide range of travel insurance products and award the best providers our prestigious awards and Star Ratings for Outstanding Value Travel Insurance.

What are Canstar’s Travel Insurance Awards & Star Ratings?

Canstar’s Travel Insurance ratings score travel insurance providers and their products, and awards the best our prestigious 5-Star Ratings. Each insurance product is assessed and scored for its price and array of features.

For this year’s Travel Insurance Star Ratings, our expert research panel compared 44 travel insurance products from 18 providers across a range of different age profiles, including seniors. To be eligible for our ratings, each product had to meet certain basic requirements, including cover for:

  • $1 million overseas medical and hospital cover per international traveller
  • Repatriation and evacuation services
  • Luggage and personal effects
  • Cancellation fees and loss of deposit

For ease of comparison, the different insurance products are judged across six geographical regions and two cruise types:

  • Africa & Middle East
  • Tras-Tasman
  • Domestic Cruise
  • Pacific Cruise

Canstar’s Travel Insurance Awards

On the back of our Star Ratings research, we also award the best travel insurance providers and products our prestigious awards for Outstanding Value.

To be eligible for an Outstanding Value Award, insurance providers have to meet extra policy requirements. These include:

  • 24-hour emergency helpline
  • Period of cover automatically extends if a medical claim requires traveller to remain overseas for treatment
  • $5 million or more family overseas medical and hospital cover
  • $5 million or more family cover for repatriation and evacuation services
  • Included cover claims arising from cruising holidays in domestic and international waters (cruise only)
  • Availability to travellers aged over 70 (senior only)
  • Covers cancellation and medical claims arising from COVID-19 related events (domestic cruise only)

This is the second year in a row that AMP has earned an Outstanding Value | Seniors Travel Insurance Award . Our awards panel notes that AMP has achieved its back-to-back awards due to its consistently strong performance across all overseas regions, which is due to its competitive premiums for older travellers and above-average feature scores.

House of Travel once again earns three Outstanding Value Awards, in our International , South Pacific Cruise and  Trans-Tasman travel insurance profiles. The insurer’s performance continues to be driven by its competitive pricings, as well as its high levels of cover.

This year, Southern Cross wins two Outstanding Value Awards,  in our International   and  Seniors   profiles. Our research panel notes that Southern Cross Travel Insurance performs particularly well in senior profiles due to its competitive premiums for older travellers. However, premium increases across the brand’s cruise insurances did see them miss out on our South Pacific Cruise Award this year.

Tower Car Insurance

A newcomer to Canstar’s Travel Insurance Awards, Tower joins our Outstanding Value Awards recipients in the International , South Pacific Cruise and Trans-Tasman profiles this year due to its increased price performance and comprehensive policy offerings.

For the second consecutive year, Worldcare is the only travel insurance provider to earn an Outstanding Value Award across all award profiles.

This is due to Worldcare’s consistently competitive prices and strong range of policy features across all regions and age profiles.

In awarding Worldcare, our research panel noted the insurance brand’s exceptionally strong price performance and levels of cover in both the Trans-Tasman and South Pacific Cruise profiles.

Cook Islands

Located in the South Pacific between Fiji and Tahiti, the Cook Islands is nothing short of a tropical paradise. The self-governing island nation, which has close ties to New Zealand, is made up of 15 islands which have a total land area of only 240 square kilometres. The largest island is Rarotonga, which is home to stunning mountainous terrain and is surrounded by equally impressive beaches, lagoons and reefs. The peak on Rarotonga, known as Te Manga, sits 658 metres above sea level.

However, each of the islands have their own unique scenery and each is arguably more amazing than the previous one. If you are looking for a unique tropical getaway, look no further than the Cook Islands. The best bit is it is closer to Australia than you might think.

bill fairs blAZ3Pf6cls unsplash

The islands that make up Cook Islands

The Cook Islands consist of 15 different islands in the South Pacific, collectively making up a self-governing nation.

The largest of the Cook Islands, this is also the most populated island and is where the nation’s capital – Avarua – lies.

Rarotonga’s peak, Te Manga, reaches 658 metres above sea level, with the mountains of the island providing some great hiking opportunities.

On Rarotonga you can also find waterfalls, some great beaches and pristine lagoons for swimming and snorkelling.

This is the second-most visited island within the Cook Islands and is about a 40-minute flight north of Rarotonga.

Home to a little under 2000 people, the peak of the island is a hill known as Maunga Pu which reaches 123 metres.

The island is within a triangular barrier reef which has some incredible lagoons and there are some small uninhabited surrounding islands that are lined with palm trees and are picture perfect on a good day.

Other Islands

Most of the other islands within the Cook Islands are small and hard to reach for tourists, as well as having very limited accommodation options.

But if you are determined to visit them, it is possible to get to most of them one way or another.

Homestay accommodation is available on some of the islands.

However, some of the islands are uninhabited, including Suwarrow which is a nature reserve and houses only two caretakers.

The other 13 islands that make up Cook Islands are: Mitiaro, Atiu, Palmerston, Mangaia, Manuae, Takutea, Mauke, Rakahanga, Penrhyn, Manihiki, Pukapuka, Suwarrow and Nassau.

Cook Islands Tourism

Before the Covid-19 pandemic, tourist numbers to the Cook Islands were slowly growing. However, it remains an often overlooked destination in the South Pacific, despite all that is offers. In 2019, some 170,000 people visited the Cook Islands – almost 10 times the countries’ permanent resident population. Comparatively, Fiji attracted almost 900,000 tourists in the same year, while Vanuatu brought in 256,000 tourists and Tahiti saw just under 300,000 tourists. While it is as beautiful as any destination within the South Pacific, the fewer visitors make the Cook Islands a unique place to visit.

Cook Islands Flights

Air New Zealand and Jetstar both offer direct flights between Auckland, New Zealand and Rarotonga, Cook Islands. The flight time between the two airports is about 3 hours and 45 minutes. Air New Zealand has also previously offered direct flights between Sydney and Rarotonga, however these were put on pause during the Covid-19 pandemic due to border restrictions. Connections to Auckland are available from all Australian capital cities. The flight time from Sydney to Auckland is only 3 hours, while the New Zealand capital is just over 3.5 hours from Melbourne. Qantas, Jetstar and Air New Zealand all offer regular direct flights to Auckland from Australia’s east coast.

Domestic Cook Islands Flights

If you are looking to branch out beyond just Rarotonga on your trip to the Cook Islands, you can catch a domestic flight once you arrive. The island nation’s own airline, Air Rarotonga, offers flights to the popular tourist island of Aitutaki, as well as seven other outer islands – Nassau, Manihiki, Penrhyn, Atiu, Mitiaro, Mauke and Mangaia. Air Rarotonga also offers codeshare flights to Aitutaki with Air New Zealand, meaning it is possible to book a single itinerary through to Aitutaki with Air New Zealand. The flight time to Aitutaki is only 40 minutes from Rarotonga, meaning it is possible to easily visit the island as a single-day trip.

When is the best time to visit the Cook Islands?

It is always a good time to visit the Cook Islands, which enjoy warm and largely dry weather throughout the year. However, the best time to visit is considered to be during the drier months between April and November, which enjoy average daily maximum temperatures of between 25 and 28 degrees Celsius (77 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit). The water temperature is similar to the air temperature during these months, ranging from 24 to 27 degrees Celsius (75 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit). The whale watching season in the Cook Islands is between July and October, while those who are into kitesurfing should visit during the trade wind season of May to October.

Cook Islands Travel Insurance

Cook Islands is generally considered to be a safe destination to visit, with the rate of crime very low.

However, petty theft does occur, while the region is prone to tropical cyclones between November and April as well as severe storms throughout the year. Earthquakes and tsunamis can also occur.

As with any international getaway, taking out travel insurance is highly recommended if you are planning a trip to the beautiful Cook Islands. Travel insurance can protect you with cover for medical expenses – including Covid-19 – as well as evacuation and repatriation, cancellation fees and lost deposits. You can also be covered for lost, stolen or damaged luggage and personal belongings.

Make sure your trip to the Cook Islands is properly covered.

Staying safe in Cook Islands

The most common issue for tourists in the Cook Islands is occasional thefts of belongings. According to the Australian Government’s Smart Traveller website, thieves sometimes target items left on the beach or unsecured items stored in motor scooters or motorcycles. It is important to watch your belongings and securely store or hold onto your valuables wherever possible. Beaches in the Cook Islands do not have lifeguards on duty, so weak swimmers need to be careful of strong tides and find safe areas for swimming. Always follows the advice of local authorities or hotel or tour staff if there is an earthquake or tsunami alert and move to higher ground if you are near the beach. If you are travelling during the cyclone season, make yourself aware of the evacuation plan for your hotel or accommodation. Same-sex sexual activity or ‘acts of indecency’ between men is illegal in the Cook Islands, with penalties including prison sentences of up to seven years. Significant penalties also apply for carrying or using illegal drugs.

Best Resorts in the Cook Islands for couples

Don’t expect to find any towering mega hotels or resorts in the Cook Islands. This is a nation which has a rule of thumb that no building can be taller than a palm tree. Given its relatively low tourist numbers in comparison to other South Pacific destinations, the major international hotel chains do not have a footprint in the Cook Islands. However, that does not mean there isn’t some great places to stay.
Here are some of the top resorts in the Cook Islands for couples.

Pacific Resort Aitutaki

Undoubtedly the No.1 rated resort in the Cook Islands, the Pacific Resort Aitutaki is located on the island of Aitutaki, which is about a 40-minute flight from Rarotonga.

The resort overlooks what has been voted one of the most beautiful lagoons in the world and is surrounded by amazing white sand beaches and lush tropical vegetation.

The small property has only 29 spacious bungalows and villas, which are decked out in a traditional style and include private sundecks, direct beach access and private outdoor showers.

A no-kids resort, it caters only for adults and children over the age of 12 and features a spectacular infinity pool, luxury spa and on-site restaurant.
Guests consistently give Pacific Resort Aitutaki five-star reviews and describe it as “faultless”, “wonderful” and having “most helpful staff” on hand who will assist with anything you need.

Moana Sands Lagoon Resort

A small and relatively new resort on Rarotonga, the Moana Sands Lagoon Resort only opened in 2018 but has quickly become a popular spot to stay. An adults-only resort, it accepts guests only over the age of 18 and offers 24 deluxe studios and suites across two levels.

Located on the eastern side of Rarotonga, the property is situated on the famous Muri Beach and overlooks Rarotonga’s famous lagoon.

Facilities include a swimming pool, cabana, sun lounging decks, a luxury spa, on-site restaurant and complimentary use of kayaks and snorkelling equipment. Guests describe the resort as a “beautiful, tranquil hotel” in a “stunning location”, some saying they “can’t recommend it enough”.

Little Polynesian Resort

Located on the south-eastern coast of Rarotonga, this is a sister property of the Pacific Resort Aitutaki.

It goes by the slogan ‘Inspiring Romance’ and is therefore not surprisingly an adults-only five-star resort.

Enjoying a great location on Titikaveka Beach, the resort offers both modern beachfront bungalows and garden studios that were built with luxury, seclusion and romance in mind.

Property facilities include an infinity pool on the edge of the white sand beach and an on-site restaurant and bar.

Guests label the Little Polynesian Resort as “the perfect hideaway” and a “little piece of paradise” that “sets the benchmark for boutique beachfront bungalows”.

Muri Beach Club Hotel

Another property on Muri Beach on the island of Rarotonga, this modern adults-only resort is much loved by guests both for its hospitality and its location.

An intimate, 30-room hotel, the property was the dream of a local farmer who eventually brought it to life.

The modern well-appointed rooms include some Polynesian flair and there is 24-hour service that promises you will be treated like part of the family.

The resort features a pool, on-site restaurant, a bar and a spa.

Those wanting to get active can grab a kayak or stand-up paddleboard to explore the stunning lagoon just off the beach or even swim across it to one of three private motus which are directly in front of the resort.

Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort

Want to stay in an overwater bungalow on your trip to the Cook Islands? This is the only resort in the island nation that offers such accommodation.

Located on the ‘world’s most beautiful lagoon’ on the island of Aitutaki, this resort is another adults-only property and is perfect for a romantic getaway.

As the name suggests, the resort is located on a private island but it is just a two-minute ride by ferry from the main island of Aitutaki, giving it a level of exclusivity but also making it very accessible.

In addition to overwater bungalows, there are also accommodation options on land including private pool villas and beachfront bungalows.

The bungalows and villas on land come complete with outdoor Polynesian-style rain showers.

The resort also features a pool, gym, an on-site restaurant and a day spa.

Guests also have complimentary access to hammocks, bicycles and kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and snorkelling equipment to get out and explore the amazing lagoon.

The bungalows have a mix of modern and traditional Polynesian styling.

Return airport transfers, daily A la carte breakfast and use of kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and bicycles are all complimentary inclusions.

Cook Islands Top Things to Do

A visit to the Cook Islands is all about getting back to nature. In addition to the wonderful beaches, lagoons, snorkelling and diving, there are also some great nature-based things to do on land. One of the top things to do on Rarotonga is to hike to the pinnacle of the island, which is known as Te Rua Manga or ‘The Needle’. It is a tough but rewarding 2 to 3 hour hike through the island’s lush tropical jungle. There is also a waterfall to find on Rarotonga – Papua Waterfall. Popular tours available include lagoon cruises, snorkelling, scuba diving, guided hikes, cycling tours, quadbikes and 4WD trips.

Cook Islands Best Beaches

The waters around the Cook Islands are warm year-round, ranging from 23 to 28 degrees Celsius throughout the year. That means any time is a good time to head to the beach. Unlike parts of northern Australia, there is also no stinger season to watch out for.

Here are some of the best beaches to check out in the Cook Islands.

Muri Beach, Rarotonga

Located on the eastern side of the main island of Rarotonga, this is the beach where many of the island’s top resorts front onto.

Just off the beach is the famous Muri Lagoon, which has amazing blue waters and is great for swimming and snorkelling.

Muri Beach is also a hub for water sport tours, while there are plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants right nearby.

It is also a great place to watch sunrise if you are an early riser.

Titikaveka, Rarotonga

Just around the coast to the south-west of Muri Beach, this is another top-rated beach on Rarotonga.

This beach is home to bright turquoise waters and lovely white sand and is lined with palm trees.

It’s a great spot for relaxing as well as snorkelling in the lagoon.

Black Rock Beach, Rarotonga

On the western side of Rarotonga, this is a favourite spot for tourists and locals alike.

It is historically and culturally important for the people of Rarotonga, while its positioning facing to the north-west of the island means it enjoys sun throughout the day.

Sheltered waters make it a great spot for swimming or snorkelling with children, while it is also one of the best places on the island to catch an impressive sunset.

Aroa Beach and Marine Reserve, Rarotonga

On the south-west coast of Rarotonga, this is a highly-rated beach which has calm and shallow waters.

The marine reserve presents some great snorkelling opportunities, with visitors saying the “water is as clear as an aquarium”.

It is also a good spot for sunbaking and watching the sunset.

One Foot Island, Aitutaki

Located within Aitutaki’s famous lagoon, this tiny island is absolutely pristine.
Wonderful blue waters surround a white-sand island that is full of lush tropical jungle and palm trees.

You can take a boat across from Aitutaki to the island, which only has one single cabin that can be rented by visitors and a small post office where you can have your passport stamped.

Scuba Diving in the Cook Islands

Divers come from across the world to explore the waters of the Cook Islands, which provide some incredible scuba diving opportunities. The waters of the Cook Islands are warm year-round and visibility can be up to 60m. There are over 73 types of live coral in the Cook Islands along with hundreds of species of fish. Divers may also see sharks, stingrays and turtles, as well as humpback whales between the July and October. The Cook Islands’ Marae Moana Act means over 1,810,000 square kilometres (700,000 square miles) of ocean come under marine protection – more than four times the size of the state of California. Large-scale fishing is also banned for 50 nautical miles around each of the nation’s islands. There are a number of dive tour operators on both the islands of Rarotonga and Aitutaki, which can provide you with all the necessary dive equipment and take you out to explore. Night dives are also available if you want to try something a bit different.

When is the best time to dive in the Cook Islands?

While you can scuba dive at any time of year in the Cook Islands, the best time is generally considered to be between July and October. These are not only some of the months where the islands receive the least rainfall, but you may also have an opportunity to go diving with some humpback whales which set up home in the Cook Islands during these months.

What are the best scuba diving spots in the Cook Islands?

You can effectively dive anywhere in the Cook Islands at any time and find plenty to see. But there are a few top spots to check out. The island of Rarotonga is the top of a volcanic gently-sloping plateau. It has relatively shallow lagoons surrounding it, but then large drop offs of up to 4,500m.

At these drop offs, there is an abundance of coral formations and no soft corals. Most of the dive sites at these drop offs are just a 10-minute boat ride from land. There are over 30 top dive sites around Rarotonga, with options for beginner’s right through to advanced divers. There are also more than 20 top dive spots around the island of Aitutaki, with most of them again being just a short boat ride from shore.

Cook Islands Cruises

yvette goldberg JGmuEnZ8Yxk unsplash

If you would rather cruise to the Cook Islands than stay on them, you can. Paul Gauguin Cruises offers some 11-night itineraries from Papeete, Tahiti that visit the Tahitian islands of Moorea, Huahine, Taha’a and Bora Bora, while also stopping in at Rarotonga and Aitutaki in the Cook Islands.

The cruise line sails a luxury small ship in the South Pacific – the m/s Paul Gauguin – which has just 165 staterooms accommodating up to 330 guests. The ship also has three restaurants, four bars, a theatre, a fitness centre, a pool and a day spa. Another Tahiti-based ship, the Aranui 5 from Aranui Cruises, also makes occasional cruises to the Cook Islands. The ship is a dual-purpose cruise passenger and freight vessel that caters for up to 230 passengers and has all the comforts of a normal cruise ship at the back, while the front half of the ship delivers supplies to islands in the South Pacific.

Cook Islands Whale Watching

If you visit the Cook Islands at the right time, you do not even need to board a boat tour to do some whale watching. From the right beaches around the island of Rarotonga, you can often spot humpback whales in the surrounding waters. The whales migrate north into the South Pacific waters to mate, give birth and rest after visiting their summer feeding grounds of Australia and New Zealand. They then return to the Antarctic Ocean for the winter. The entire Cook Islands Exclusive Zone (EEZ) is a whale sanctuary, meaning the whales can visit safely. Migration patterns of the whales can vary slightly due to ocean temperatures, but sightings are common in the Cook Islands between July and October. One of the best places to spot a humpback whale on Rarotonga is from Black Rock on the west side of the island, where the fringing reef is close to shore. Other good spots include Aroa Beach on the south-western side of the island and Avarua Harbour on the northern coast of the island. If you visit the island of Aitutaki, you can get up even closer to the whales and swim with them. Multiple operators offer close encounter tours between July and October.

Cook Islands Kitesurfing

The water sport of Kitesurfing is kind of a big deal in the Cook Islands. The nation host the Manureva Aquafest Kitesurfing Competition each August, which attracts some of the biggest names in the sport. A week-long festival, it includes freestyle and race kitesurfing competitions as well as stand-up paddleboarding and outrigger canoeing events. The festival is held on the island of Aitutaki, which has what is regularly voted the ‘world’s most beautiful lagoon’ and is an ideal spot for kitesurfing. The best trade winds for kitesurfing come between May and October, but it is a safe and easy place for beginners to try their hand at the sport year-round. Local operators in Aitutaki offer lessons and equipment hire if you want to give kitesurfing a go.

Do you need a visa to visit the Cook Islands?

No. All international travellers can be issued a visitor permit on arrival to the Cook Islands, providing they meet certain criteria. Australian and New Zealand passport holders must have a passport that is valid for at least 7 days beyond their intended stay in the Cook Islands. Australian passport holders are allowed to stay in the Cook Islands on a standard visitor visa for up to 31 days, while New Zealand passport holders are eligible to stay up to 90 days.

Cook Islands Weather

The Cook Islands enjoy a warm and tropical climate year-round, with average daily maximum temperatures of between 23 and 27 degrees Celsius (73 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit) throughout the year. The warmest months are between December and April, but they are also the wettest months.

Average maximum temperatures during those months are between 26 and 27 degrees Celsius (78 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit). However, Rarotonga also records between nine and 10 days of rainfall each month during this period, albeit usually in the form of a brief morning or afternoon tropical shower.

The driest months are between May and November, which typically see rain on only five or six days per month. The average daily maximum temperatures during these months are slightly cooler but still warm, ranging from 23 to 25 degrees Celsius (73 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit). Rarotonga records between 11 and 13.5 hours of daylight each day across the year.

Cook Islands Population

According to the 2016 census, the Cook Islands had a population of 17,459 people. Of that population, 78.2 per cent identified as being of native Cook Island Māori decent. Given the tight ties between the Cook Islands and New Zealand, Cook Islanders are considered both citizens of New Zealand and Cook Islands nationals.

Travel insurance documentation can be quite complex and difficult to understand. If you have a query we are only too willing to find the answer for you.

Just a question for other New Zealanders who have recently travelled to Rarotonga - interested to hear which company you purchased travel insurance through?

Good question Horiboy, I'm interested too. In these times of change it might be time to not simply return to the travel insurer you've always used previously if there are others that are offering better coverage for this different world of travel we've entered.

Thanks Dianz, I noticed on the cook islands travel site they make mention of Covermore, Allianz and Southern Cross offering travel insurance policies - but I am interested to hear about which company NZers choose to go with or any other companies.

I looked at them all but chose Allianz after comparing benefits. They covered me from when I stepped outside my door till I returned home, the others didn’t.

I’m an AA member so bought through the AA.

thanks Lacey02 :)

Just been, TBH we rely on the travel insurance that is built into our platinum credit card which we got for free when we renegotiated our mortgage, I think they cost only about 50-100 a year more than a normal card. That is with a major insurance company and the spec seems fine.

Apart from the usual things that you would normally expect a travel Insurance to cover in these times of Covid it is worth checking to make sure your insurance covers situations related to Covid.

Governments can introduce all manner of rules, regulators and restrictions sometimes at short notice and you need to make sure your insurance covers this as much as possible.

Your insurance won’t cover you if your government advisors you not to travel to your intended destination but you still decide to go.

If you catch Covid before you travel and can’t go are you covered for all your losses in case your hotel / accommodation won’t return any money paid.

If you catch Covid whilst away and have to isolate for 5 -10 – 14 days are you costs covered.

These are some of the questions that you need to clarify with your insurance company.

I work in travel and we sell Allianz or Covermore for Raro travel to our clients. I've personally gone with cigna this time however for my Aug trip as I needed the extra weeks of pregnancy cover cigna offer compared to others.

Awesome thanks for that helpful info Abbey

Check your policy carefully. Our platinum credit card didn’t cover any Covid related issues. We ended up taking a policy through Air NZ which covered majority of Covid disruptions etc. Just double check before buying…

I'm having difficulty finding specific info regarding travel insurance regarding New Zealanders visiting Rarotonga.... I know for eg that we have a reciprocal program with Australia. I know that it is not needed for travel to Nuie. If in the event I needed urgent medical care I would be flown to NZ (my home country).... Do I need travel insurance in this instance or would I be covered under the NZ medical system and which I pay my taxes for? I hate travel insurance mainly because of all the hidden exclusions. I've not had one of my claims accepted. When I've lost items they/ve referred me to my contents insurance. No doubt if I was to have an accident on a scooter, I wouldn't be covered anyway as it would be deemed a risky activity. For lesser urgent medical issues like a broken limb/teeth issues I would be happy to cover those costs myself. Basically insurance would cover me if I was to fly back to NZ in a coffin... as morbid as that sounds. So my question is do most NZ'ers still purchase insurance for travel to Raro?

' class=

You very definitely do need travel insurance, including to be flown back to NZ if anything serious happens that can't be dealt with in Rarotonga. I know a local who broke her wrist and needed surgery and plates in the wrist was lucky that there were surgeons from NZ visiting the Raro hospital at the time who had the expertise to carry out the operation.

The cost of an ambulance to be taken to the hospital on Rarotonga is $800 for visitors.

Anyone travelling to the Cooks Islands is not acting sensibly if they don't take out comprehensive travel insurance. Some of the credit cards offer good insurance if your travel is booked on the card. It would pay to check if this is the case with you.

I would seriously never travel anywhere without insurance! I always get insurance for Australia too - not sure why you think it's not needed. If you have an accident there and are transported to a hospital that is not covered by the reciprocal agreement you can be up for thousands. My friend's husband had a detached retina over there and couldn't fly home - he had to have surgery then they had to stay for weeks until he recovered. Without insurance this would have been entirely out of their own wallet!

Peace of mind... and yes, I always have travel insurance for Rarotonga :)

I was curious about your comment about not needing travel insurance for Niue because it just didn't sound right. Have a look at this lonely planet link. It recommends comprehensive travel insurance including cover for being flown back home.

http://www.lonelyplanet.com/niue/essential-information

I suspect you are getting confused with the fact that Cook Islanders, Niueans and Tokelauans have a special relationship with NZ. The citizens of those countries have freedom of access to NZ and are able to access medical facilities here. The reverse is not the case.

NZ residents are covered by ACC if holidaying OS (less than 6 months I think), when back in NZ, but for emergency treatment under the reciprocal agreement, eg for a heart attack, their biggest and sometimes large bill may be for an Australian ambulance trip... So I do understand that 'medical' issues that arise that are not accidents are the biggest worry. I would purchase insurance for air ambulance only and perhaps that is what I need to look at. A policy that will cover me in the rare occasion where something dire happens. Because for me personally, I don't hold out much faith in travel insurance. I've purchased it many times and always been left disappointed when they don't pay out. They wouldn't pay the $800 for a raro ambulance for example if it was called due to falling off a scooter... I will look into finding a policy that has a higher excess but will cover me for medical costs. I find insurance an interesting subject. So many people get passionate = almost angry when I suggest I don't want it.

So please if you guys could let me know what travel insurance companies you've used that HAVE paid out and what for, I'd appreciate it. Because I have read the labryinth of terms and conditions and they seem pretty set up to make sure that they have every excuse to deny your claim. If you have personally claimed and been successful I would like to know because I will then look seriously at that company. I have used House of Travel and Air NZ insurance cover and am not impressed.

You'll find that insurance policies vary. As far as 'scootering' is concerned I know that some policies don't cover people riding scooters or motorbikes if they don't have a licence in their home country. As many visitors to the Cooks are in exactly this situation it would certainly pay them to check the fine print.

As far as helmets are concerned all visitors will be required to wear them from 1 October and I think all hire companies will require those hiring bikes to comply with the law. Again, that's something you'll find out when you get there and when you have to decide whether to just pay for the basic insurance covered in the hire or take out additional insurance to reduce the excess if you have an accident causing damage to the vehicle.

These are your decisions to make - not anyone else's.

Fantastic about helmets coming into law. What a good decision! I'm not hiring a scooter - I'm too safety conscious lol. (That and I'm too unco and scared at doing stuff like that). I'd be the worst person on a scooter. I'll stick to bus/walking and push bikes 🚲 - (this may seem ironic considering I was pondering whether I needed insurance, you'd assume a safety conscious non risk type personality to be all over it)... I'm just fed up with the paperwork and hoops insurance seems to make you walk thru. However I am more than happy to pay $71 to get southern cross cover - I've just looked. That is pretty amazing value. I had been imaging insurance to be upwards of $700 as it has been when I visit the states. So insurance purchased.

Thanks for your input btw.

Travel insurance is always about the big problem that might happen - my friend's son who was badly beaten up in Thailand, Lana Cockroft who needed to be urgently airlifted out of Fiji after a coral cut and nearly died... and yes, bringing a body home if I or my partner died.

My husband went to Las Vegas last year with his business colleague who broke his arm. This alone would have cost hundreds, if not thousands, over there and yes, the insurance company paid up (NZI).

I'm pretty sure that as long as you are following the rules of the country while riding a scooter then you would be covered. It doesn't fall into the same category as skydiving or paragliding etc.

os.. I just saw that you purchased insurance, yes it's not expensive to Rarotonga and that is a great decision!!
